- 0:00Hey you guys, it's friendly. Welcome back to In the
- 0:03Stillness. I'm so happy that you are
- 0:06joining me for another episode. I hope you're feeling expectant
- 0:10going into today because we've got some great points and things
- 0:14to talk through. We're going to be finishing
- 0:17chapter 3 and I'm going to do this episode a little
- 0:20differently than usual. I'm going to read 1 chunk and
- 0:24then I'm going to talk through those verses, and then we're
- 0:27going to go through the second part.
- 0:29So with that, let's go ahead and jump into First Thessalonians
- 0:34chapter 3, verse 6. But Timothy has just now come to
- 0:40us from you and has brought good news about your faith and love.
- 0:45He has told us that you always have pleasant memories of us and
- 0:48that you long to see us just as we also long to see you.
- 0:53Therefore, brothers and sisters, in all our distress and
- 0:57persecution, we were encouraged about you because of your faith.
- 1:03For now we really live. Since you are standing firm in
- 1:06the Lord. How can we thank God enough for
- 1:09you in return for all the joy that we have in the presence of
- 1:13our God Because of you, night and day, we pray most earnestly
- 1:19that we may see you again and supply what is lacking in your
- 1:23faith. OK, so this first section, there
- 1:28is so much here, but the first thing that really stood out to
- 1:32me was the significance of encouragement in the body of
- 1:36Christ. When Timothy brings this report
- 1:40back to Paul, he's telling him that the Thessalonians are
- 1:44standing firm in faith and love and that they remember Paul
- 1:49kindly and that they long to see him.
- 1:51And Paul says that even amidst all of the trials and suffering
- 1:56that he's going through their faith.
- 1:58It encouraged him. He even says, for now we live if
- 2:03you are standing fast in the Lord.
- 2:05And I think that that is so powerful because encouragement,
- 2:09It promotes unity. It keeps believers steadfast
- 2:14through different seasons. It reminds us that we're not
- 2:18here to do this alone. It brought to mind Romans 12/15,
- 2:23which says that we rejoice with those who rejoice and we mourn
- 2:27with those who mourn. So that communicates that
- 2:31there's space for both celebration and sorrow within
- 2:36community. And I think sometimes it can be
- 2:39easy to get this wrong because we might feel weird or avoid
- 2:44sharing the good things and blessings that God is doing in
- 2:49our lives. Maybe because someone else is
- 2:51struggling and going through a hard season.
- 2:55And of course, we have to share sensitively.
- 2:59We need to be humble and aware of the timing.
- 3:02But I also don't think that we should bottle up our testimony
- 3:07and hold back from what God is doing in our lives just because
- 3:11someone else is in a hard season.
- 3:14Think about this. What if what God is doing in
- 3:17your life? What if the good blessings that
- 3:20he has given you is the very thing that helps a friend hold
- 3:24on to hope while they're really struggling?
- 3:27So maybe you're enjoying a job that is going really well, that
- 3:33could remind someone who might be in a job that they don't
- 3:36really love, that there is hope and that their job right now is
- 3:42not the end all be all. Or maybe you're in a healthy
- 3:45Christ centered relationship and they're still in a waiting
- 3:48season. That could remind them that
- 3:51godly love exists and that there's people out there.
- 3:55Because I believe part of steward stewarding your
- 3:58blessings is sharing them, even if it's just sharing how God
- 4:03brought it about encouragement. It also builds up church
- 4:08leaders. It strengthens newer believers
- 4:11who aren't as used to resisting temptation or facing opposition.
- 4:16And it reminds people that their obedience in the faith is
- 4:20producing fruit and it's worth it.
- 4:23So here's the other part that stood out to me.
- 4:26Reciprocation. We see Paul is overjoyed not
- 4:30just because they're doing well, but because they remember him
- 4:34and they desire to see him too. So their bond is not one sided.
- 4:40It's a two way St. And this is also just showing us
- 4:45that deep relationships are a two way St. like in friendships
- 4:52and even more so spiritually in our relationship with God.
- 4:56It goes both ways. You both have to invest and be
- 5:00intentional. So if you desire friends who are
- 5:04consistent and loyal, who are prayer warriors and trustworthy
- 5:09people that you can confide in, are you practicing being that
- 5:14too? Because ultimately, you attract
- 5:17what you are. So be the friend that you want
- 5:21to have. I want us to ask ourselves too,
- 5:26is my faith inspiring my friends and expressing itself through
- 5:30love? Am I standing firm so that it
- 5:34encourages them to do the same? And how am I working on becoming
- 5:39an even better friend? Let's also look at Paul's heart.
- 5:45He is being persecuted. He is in no way in an easy
- 5:49situation, but he is not focused on his discomfort.
- 5:53He is so overwhelmed with gratitude because the church is
- 5:57growing. He says he cannot thank God
- 5:59enough and it leads him to pray constantly.
- 6:04Y'all. He is alive to make Christ
- 6:06known. He is thriving off of knowing
- 6:09that they are seeking God. And honestly I was thinking
- 6:14about this. If this is how much Paul loves
- 6:17this church that he doesn't even really know super well, imagine
- 6:23Jesus's love for us. That made me emotional and
- 6:27Paul's gratitude. It also challenged me because no
- 6:31matter where we are in our lives, we are to be praising God
- 6:36with such overwhelming thankfulness and gratitude.
- 6:41There is so much to thank Him for.
- 6:44It's endless to give y'all Just a few things that came to my
- 6:50mind. One, if you are a believer, you
- 6:54can thank Him for the revelation of His grace that has called us
- 6:57to salvation literally for breath and your lungs, the way
- 7:01that your heart is pumping blood so that you are breathing a
- 7:05clean slate. New mercies every morning being
- 7:09made into a new creation. You have a secured, promised
- 7:13eternity and the gospel is continually advancing across the
- 7:18world. There are more than enough
- 7:20reasons to thank God. And also, how often are we
- 7:26actually talking to God through prayer?
- 7:28Is it a few minutes a day or all throughout the day?
- 7:33Because Paul was praying 24/7 for these believers.
- 7:39OK, so now after going through that chunk, I want to finish by
- 7:44reading verses 11 through 13. This really feels like Paul's
- 7:49prayer over them. So that's kind of why I want to
- 7:52close out with it. So beginning in verse 11, now
- 7:58may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus clear the way
- 8:03for us to come to you. May the Lord make your love
- 8:06increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else,
- 8:11just as ours does for you. May He strengthen your hearts so
- 8:16that you will be blameless and holy in the presence of our God
- 8:20and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones.
- 8:26I love that Paul prays specifically.
- 8:31He asks God to make a way. He requests that their love
- 8:37increase in overflow. He asks God to strengthen them
- 8:43and to prepare them in holiness for Jesus.
- 8:46So I just want to encourage y'all do not shy away from very
- 8:51specific prayers because sometimes it's those specific
- 8:55ones that actually end up boosting your faith the most
- 8:59when God answers them, often in ways that are even better than
- 9:04you could imagine. And the word overflow that Paul
- 9:07uses, you cannot overflow with love if you're not being filled
- 9:13first. So this is not shallow.
- 9:17It's not just being sweet. This is actively reflecting
- 9:21Christ's love as seen in his life.
- 9:25So let me ask you guys, are you spending quality time being
- 9:30filled by God so that you can outpour unto others?
- 9:36Y'all for me and I know for all of us, there is nothing good in
- 9:41US apart from Jesus. I am noticeably different if I
- 9:46do not spend time alone with my father every day.
- 9:51Community is amazing. It is such a gift.
- 9:55But I truly do need my time with just me and Him in the
- 9:59stillness, in the quiet place. Because it's in the quiet place
- 10:04that the Lord renews my mind. He reminds me why I exist.
- 10:10He helps me respond to others with patience and slowness and
- 10:15with grace. And He empowers me to pursue
- 10:18holiness. And also how incredible to think
- 10:23one day we are going to be standing with believers from
- 10:27this church in Thessalonica, with Paul, with the other
- 10:31apostles fully united before Christ at his return, the
- 10:37marriage of the Lamb. Just what a picture to look
- 10:40forward to. So let this be the prayer over
- 10:44us that God would make a way when there isn't 1.
- 10:49That our love would increase and overflow.
- 10:53That He would establish our hearts, blameless and holiness
- 10:57before Him. OK, well that is what I have for
- 11:01you guys today. I loved finishing chapter 3 with
- 11:04y'all. I'm going to be traveling this
- 11:06weekend, so I don't think I'm going to have any new episodes
- 11:10for the next couple days, but I am so excited to be back next
- 11:14week as we head into Chapter 4. Praying that your love overflows
- 11:18for the Lord and a bounce for others today and that this can
- 11:22leave y'all with some encouragement to give and to
- 11:25receive. I'll talk to y'all soon.
