- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Swahili with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. We're your language-learning buddies. Lucas: You know, last time we were talking about school subjects. Today, let's take a different route. Luna: Ooh, a different route? Are we going somewhere? Lucas: We are! We're going to talk about transport. How to get around in Swahili. Luna: Nice! I've been wanting to know how to say 'car' and 'bus'. Lucas: Perfect place to start. So, a car in Swahili is 'gari'. Luna: Gari. Lucas: Gari. Good. And a bus is 'basi'. Luna: Basi. That's similar to English! Lucas: Exactly. And a motorcycle is 'pikipiki'. Luna: Pikipiki. Oh, that sounds fun. Lucas: It does, doesn't it? Let's practice them together. Repeat after me: gari. Luna: Gari. Lucas: Basi. Luna: Basi. Lucas: Pikipiki. Luna: Pikipiki. Lucas: Awesome. Now, let's put them in a simple sentence. 'I go by car' is 'Ninaenda kwa gari'. Luna: Ninaenda kwa gari. Lucas: Ninaenda kwa gari. 'Ninaenda' means 'I go' or 'I am going'. Then 'kwa' means 'by' or 'with'. So literally 'I go by car'. Luna: Ninaenda kwa gari. Got it. Lucas: Now try with bus: 'Ninaenda kwa basi'. Luna: Ninaenda kwa basi. Lucas: Perfect. And with motorcycle: 'Ninaenda kwa pikipiki'. Luna: Ninaenda kwa pikipiki. That's fun to say. Lucas: It is! Now, let's make a question. 'Do you take the bus?' is 'Je, unapanda basi?' Luna: Je, unapanda basi? Lucas: Good. 'Unapanda' means 'you take' or 'you board'. So 'Je, unapanda basi?' is asking if you take the bus. Luna: Okay, so 'Je, unapanda basi?' to ask about the bus. Lucas: Exactly. Now, let's imagine a scene. You're at a bus stop and a friend comes by on a pikipiki. Luna: Okay. Lucas: The friend says, 'Ninaenda kwa pikipiki. Je, unapanda?' Meaning 'I go by motorcycle. Do you take it?' Luna: So you can say yes or no. Lucas: Right. If you say 'Ndiyo, napanda' meaning 'Yes, I take it'. Luna: Ndiyo, napanda. Lucas: Or 'Hapana, ninaenda kwa gari' – 'No, I go by car'. Luna: Hapana, ninaenda kwa gari. Lucas: Great. Let's do a little practice. I'll ask you, 'Je, unapanda basi?' and you answer. Luna: Okay. Lucas: Je, unapanda basi? Luna: Hapana, ninaenda kwa gari. Lucas: Excellent! Now, switch roles. You ask me. Luna: Je, unapanda pikipiki? Lucas: Ndiyo, napanda pikipiki. I love pikipiki. Luna: You do? That's cool. Lucas: Yeah. So let's review the words one more time. Car? Luna: Gari. Lucas: Bus? Luna: Basi. Lucas: Motorcycle? Luna: Pikipiki. Lucas: And for sentences, 'I go by car'? Luna: Ninaenda kwa gari. Lucas: 'Do you take the bus?'? Luna: Je, unapanda basi? Lucas: You got it. And that's it for today's episode of Learn Swahili with Fexingo. Luna: Practice these phrases and you'll be ready to talk about transport. Lucas: Tune in next time for more Swahili. Until then, kwaheri! Luna: Kwaheri!
