Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: To Mikey Schuman, the political editor of tv ANDS, he
- 0:02Speaker 1: was very excited on the telly last night and released
- 0:04Speaker 1: the results of a poll that give a lean to
- 0:06Speaker 1: the left block and as she says or said, spells
- 0:10Speaker 1: trouble for the coalition. But there was another one as well,
- 0:12Speaker 1: the Taxpayer's Union Courier poll reflected the same thing. It
- 0:16Speaker 1: sees Labor, Greens and Tapatimali able to reach a sixty
- 0:19Speaker 1: one seat target. Both of the poles do support for
- 0:22Speaker 1: the coalition has foremen One News has New Zealand first
- 0:25Speaker 1: teetering in their parliamentary seat in the coalition there at
- 0:29Speaker 1: just five percent the threshold. Fifty percent of those polls
- 0:32Speaker 1: said the country's going in the wrong direction. So political
- 0:35Speaker 1: commentator Bridget Morton is my guest this morning. Good morning
- 0:37Speaker 1: to you, Bridget, Good morning. So our labor pulling people
- 0:41Speaker 1: in or are National pushing people away?
- 0:44Speaker 2: I think it's the economy that's making everyone seemed a
- 0:47Speaker 2: little bit depressed about what's going forward. So I think
- 0:50Speaker 2: that's indoubtedly one of the biggest factors, particularly in the
- 0:53Speaker 2: right track wrong track. I think also for National that
- 0:56Speaker 2: there has been a lot of distracting issues over the
- 0:58Speaker 2: last couple of months was building the major one, and
- 1:02Speaker 2: they want to be really talking about the economy and
- 1:04Speaker 2: what they're doing there.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Well, they are, because I don't know if you've noticed,
- 1:07Speaker 1: so far this year it's been growth, growth, growth, growth, growth, growth, growth.
- 1:10Speaker 1: There's been a couple of announcements. Could this be seen
- 1:13Speaker 1: as some sort of proof that their moves on the
- 1:16Speaker 1: economy so far in twenty twenty five have not been
- 1:20Speaker 1: motivating for voters.
- 1:22Speaker 2: I think you've got to be careful that some of these,
- 1:24Speaker 2: you know, there's just all these announcements are very very
- 1:26Speaker 2: new and perhaps are not flowing through. A lot of
- 1:30Speaker 2: them are also about signally that they're focusing on that
- 1:32Speaker 2: economic growth passage opposed to necessarily moves that are going
- 1:36Speaker 2: to affect households. So you know, people are thinking about
- 1:39Speaker 2: how much their mortgage costs, how much it's cost and
- 1:41Speaker 2: get food on the table, and none of those announcements
- 1:44Speaker 2: are quite touching those things. Yet they're about getting those
- 1:47Speaker 2: economic settings right. So I think you're going to see
- 1:49Speaker 2: probably more of that household cost of living message coming
- 1:52Speaker 2: through as well.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Not only that those they're not only very new numberso
- 2:00Speaker 1: miles away from the next election, So how important are
- 2:02Speaker 1: these numbers?
- 2:04Speaker 2: Well, with polls, it's always about trends, and I think
- 2:06Speaker 2: that's what is more concerning is the fact that the
- 2:09Speaker 2: actually more voters are heading towards that wrong track right track,
- 2:13Speaker 2: that's going to be a headline number. I think looking
- 2:16Speaker 2: at whether or not labor conformer government is probably premature,
- 2:19Speaker 2: particularly when you've got to party molor you're making quite
- 2:22Speaker 2: radical bottom lines about commissioners with veto powers that actually
- 2:27Speaker 2: makes at less block coalition that pretty impossible at the moment.
- 2:31Speaker 2: So it's definitely something about whether or not they're actually
- 2:34Speaker 2: getting the narrative right. And I think, as you pointed out,
- 2:36Speaker 2: they are going economic growth, growth, growth, and that's what
- 2:39Speaker 2: they're going to be pushing really harder at the next
- 2:41Speaker 2: couple of months.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Hey Bridget, thank you very much. And you're quite right,
- 2:44Speaker 1: Mikey Sherman. Just because you've got some software that can
- 2:47Speaker 1: actually do what a parliament might look like, you don't
- 2:49Speaker 1: have to start worrying about this two years out from
- 2:50Speaker 1: the election. That's just my own feeling on that. For
