- 0:00Speaker 1: Eight oh seven thirteen ten Wi b A and ask
- 0:04Speaker 1: the experts with Andrew Larson. Andrew, of course, comes to
- 0:07Speaker 1: us from Larson Home Services. The website larsenhome Services dot com.
- 0:12Speaker 1: That's l A R s o N Home Services dot com. Again,
- 0:16Speaker 1: that's l A R s o N Home Services dot com.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Dolphin number six O eight five three five forty three
- 0:22Speaker 1: forty three. That's five three five forty three forty three. Andrew,
- 0:25Speaker 1: do you have all of your Christmas shopping done?
- 0:28Speaker 2: Are you serious?
- 0:30Speaker 1: Am I going to run into you as well this afternoon?
- 0:33Speaker 1: Trying to get no joke.
- 0:36Speaker 2: A couple of years ago, I was in the jewelry
- 0:39Speaker 2: store Christmas Eve. Oh, and I walked in and the
- 0:43Speaker 2: lady's like, hey, how are you doing? I'm like, oh,
- 0:45Speaker 2: you know, last minute. She goes, Oh, no, for husbands,
- 0:48Speaker 2: this isn't last night. It's never open for another six hours.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Yeah. Well's you probably made a very good choice as well,
- 0:56Speaker 1: going to the jewelry store. I know that. Uh, that's
- 1:00Speaker 1: that's always That's a fun place to do shopping. And Andrew,
- 1:03Speaker 1: it's that time of year obviously. I got our first
- 1:06Speaker 1: little dusting of snow this morning and temperatures I don't
- 1:10Speaker 1: see that forecast are kind of you know, they're they're
- 1:12Speaker 1: making their way down there, and we are going to
- 1:13Speaker 1: get especially start getting to the new year, and it
- 1:16Speaker 1: gets we forget about January and February, just how bitterly
- 1:20Speaker 1: cold it it becomes here in Wisconsin. And we started
- 1:23Speaker 1: a conversation last week about insulation. Let's talk about web
- 1:27Speaker 1: MD and talk about keeping your home and especially comfortable.
- 1:32Speaker 1: But I look at it from this, I pay for heat.
- 1:35Speaker 1: I want to keep that heat, keeping that money within
- 1:38Speaker 1: your walls of your house.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, it's all about making your home more efficient, Yes,
- 1:44Speaker 2: making it heat and cool better, making it breathe better,
- 1:48Speaker 2: just making it a better place to live. And if
- 1:51Speaker 2: you're constantly if your home is constantly getting warmed up
- 1:55Speaker 2: and then getting cool and warmed up and getting cool
- 1:57Speaker 2: in that furnace is constantly kicking on. Typically I know
- 2:02Speaker 2: for me anyway, I feel that heat, that heat temperature
- 2:06Speaker 2: change usually before my thermostat does. So it's not so
- 2:11Speaker 2: much in my new house it was done properly, but
- 2:15Speaker 2: in some of my other houses that I've had, it's
- 2:18Speaker 2: it's a constant battle and comfortability, comfortable ability, geez. I
- 2:23Speaker 2: don't even know if that's a word, and if it is,
- 2:25Speaker 2: it's not working this morning. It's still it's still kind
- 2:29Speaker 2: of early, but yes, we want to keep the heat
- 2:32Speaker 2: in our house. And what I started last week was
- 2:34Speaker 2: just giving instances of we could call it like the
- 2:37Speaker 2: web MD documentary, I don't know whatever you want to
- 2:42Speaker 2: call it, but it's fun for us. Like we've all
- 2:44Speaker 2: we've all had that weird itch or pain and we
- 2:47Speaker 2: web md it and we're like, oh, good lord, I've
- 2:52Speaker 2: I've got six months to live. I should probably spend
- 2:54Speaker 2: my money and take a vacation, which is usually isn't
- 2:57Speaker 2: the case, And then you go to the doctor and
- 2:59Speaker 2: they're like, don't that's a swear word to them. Yeah,
- 3:02Speaker 2: web but the same thing with us. So what I
- 3:06Speaker 2: wanted to do was kind of go over instances where
- 3:09Speaker 2: homeowners felt something, knew something wasn't right, did a little research,
- 3:13Speaker 2: had a company come over and fix something that actually
- 3:16Speaker 2: didn't fix anything. And I reached out to some of
- 3:21Speaker 2: our sales reps and said, hey, I need give me
- 3:24Speaker 2: some instances where we went into a home and the
- 3:27Speaker 2: homeowner said I need this, and it was something completely different,
- 3:33Speaker 2: but we found it, and I'm just like, you know,
- 3:36Speaker 2: hoping somebody responds, I got like ten Oh wow, all
- 3:40Speaker 2: about insulation, because it's common. So a couple of weeks ago,
- 3:44Speaker 2: one of my reps went to a house and these
- 3:46Speaker 2: homeowners had already done their research. Of course, they had
- 3:50Speaker 2: web MD insulated it, and they needed more insulation. It
- 3:55Speaker 2: was cold and drafty, and their their furnace in their
- 3:58Speaker 2: mind was actually constantly running, like almost never shut off.
- 4:03Speaker 2: And it home was like four years old. Oh okay,
- 4:07Speaker 2: well they had already gotten more insulation put in, called
- 4:12Speaker 2: the company. Okay, here's the kicker. Now this I don't know.
- 4:17Speaker 2: I don't want to be too bold, but they had
- 4:21Speaker 2: already had an estimate from They had called us for
- 4:24Speaker 2: an estimate, then heard we were expensive, then canceled the estimate,
- 4:29Speaker 2: got an estimate from one of our competitors, and our
- 4:32Speaker 2: competitors obliged, sure, no problem, peaked their head up in
- 4:36Speaker 2: the open. The scuttle peaked their head up and said, oh, absolutely,
- 4:40Speaker 2: you don't have enough insulation. You need more insulation. The
- 4:43Speaker 2: fact of the matter was is they already had seventeen
- 4:45Speaker 2: inches of insulation. The whome was four years old. They
- 4:49Speaker 2: had all of the insulation that they needed, and this
- 4:52Speaker 2: company went and put another twelve inches on top of it.
- 4:54Speaker 2: So now they had like thirty inch of insulation, which
- 4:58Speaker 2: did absolutely nothing for their problem. Them they had no
- 5:02Speaker 2: air ceiling. Okay, but that actually wasn't the problem. The
- 5:09Speaker 2: problem upon actually getting up in the attic and so
- 5:13Speaker 2: so okay, let me back up with it. One of
- 5:15Speaker 2: the things that our guys are tasks were doing is
- 5:18Speaker 2: like visually walking around a house and like almost drawing
- 5:21Speaker 2: a map of the house. Okay, we want to draw
- 5:24Speaker 2: a floor plan, because here's what happens. There are hidden attics.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Sometimes I have one in my house. Oh, I was
- 5:31Speaker 2: going to have one, an attic that is cut off
- 5:34Speaker 2: from the rest of the house and unless you put
- 5:36Speaker 2: in a second scuttle, there's no way to get to it.
- 5:40Speaker 2: And I was going to have one of those in
- 5:41Speaker 2: my house. Well, they had one of those in this
- 5:43Speaker 2: house because my rep by making that kind of visual
- 5:48Speaker 2: map and literally drawing it out and then going up
- 5:51Speaker 2: in the attic and going, wait a second, there's more
- 5:54Speaker 2: to this than we can see, and there was there
- 5:58Speaker 2: was like a whole another half of the house that
- 6:01Speaker 2: had an attic that was cut off by a wall
- 6:03Speaker 2: up there that you couldn't get to. And guess what
- 6:06Speaker 2: was in there?
- 6:06Speaker 3: Sean nothing, absolutely nothing, literally nothing was in there, no
- 6:13Speaker 3: air ceiling, no insulation. And on top of it, they
- 6:16Speaker 3: had a big chimney from a fireplace that actually went
- 6:19Speaker 3: through that attic. And if we know anything about code,
- 6:22Speaker 3: any hot pipe like that, first of all needs to
- 6:25Speaker 3: be double insulated so it's fire rated, but.
- 6:27Speaker 2: It also needs two inch gap around it. So here
- 6:32Speaker 2: they have right in the main room of their house,
- 6:34Speaker 2: a fireplace going up into an attic that's unaccessible. They
- 6:40Speaker 2: have a chimney chase and no insulation. Now you could
- 6:44Speaker 2: WebMD that all you want, but unless a company comes
- 6:48Speaker 2: out and truly does a thorough inspection, because ninety percent
- 6:53Speaker 2: of people, unless they're a professional, if they get up
- 6:56Speaker 2: in that attic and look, they go, no, that's an attic.
- 7:00Speaker 2: There's insulation. But if you haven't mapped that house out
- 7:05Speaker 2: and then thought to yourself, wait, I'm not seeing everything.
- 7:07Speaker 2: So what they had to do while they're up there
- 7:10Speaker 2: was actually there was a firewall of drywall up there
- 7:13Speaker 2: in the attic. They had to cut open a hole
- 7:16Speaker 2: then revealing a completely uninsulated space. The temperature in this
- 7:22Speaker 2: so on that day it was was it last week
- 7:24Speaker 2: or the week before when it was really cold, Yeah,
- 7:27Speaker 2: the temperature outside was like in the teens, it was
- 7:31Speaker 2: sixty six degrees in that attic space. Why do you
- 7:35Speaker 2: think their furnace never shut off? I mean when you
- 7:40Speaker 2: say you're heating the outside, you are legitimately heating the outside.
- 7:46Speaker 2: And when I say to visualize for people, because we
- 7:50Speaker 2: had a pre impost done on this house with a
- 7:52Speaker 2: blower door, it was essentially like having a five foot
- 7:58Speaker 2: by two and a half foot double hung window and
- 8:00Speaker 2: having three of them just open, wide open all the time,
- 8:05Speaker 2: year round. But you can't feel it as much because
- 8:09Speaker 2: the heat is still coming into your condition space and
- 8:11Speaker 2: then rising up and going outside. Obviously if you had
- 8:13Speaker 2: windows open, you would feel it. But so upon for
- 8:17Speaker 2: you know, full inspection, we figured this out. We were
- 8:19Speaker 2: able to fix this, make their home comfortable. And you know,
- 8:22Speaker 2: actually one of my rep suggestions was, hey, you know,
- 8:26Speaker 2: obviously you can pay us to fix this, but you
- 8:31Speaker 2: probably actually paid your builder to do this already, right,
- 8:35Speaker 2: that should be in the cost of the home. It
- 8:38Speaker 2: just completely got missed. They didn't even feel comfortable with
- 8:42Speaker 2: the builder coming back and doing anything. So they decided
- 8:45Speaker 2: to actually have a professional insulating company do it. And
- 8:49Speaker 2: we did the work. And actually, I take that back.
- 8:52Speaker 2: I don't know if we've done the work yet, but
- 8:54Speaker 2: we are doing the work. I'm sure we're putting a
- 8:57Speaker 2: rush on that one, because I mean that's crazy. Can
- 9:00Speaker 2: even imagine what their heat bills were?
- 9:01Speaker 1: That is crazy. And you mentioned a new where I
- 9:05Speaker 1: just say new words. It's that's we're talking about. Yeah,
- 9:07Speaker 1: that's a new home. I mean, that's that is the staggering.
- 9:10Speaker 1: And I sometimes people forget is you know, you get
- 9:13Speaker 1: these houses and these builders and they're and they've got
- 9:15Speaker 1: systems and they're just kind of going house to house
- 9:17Speaker 1: to house doing their thing. And if the one, you
- 9:20Speaker 1: know it's it's four fifty nine and they're working on
- 9:23Speaker 1: one roof and they're like, oh they're one attic, like oh,
- 9:26Speaker 1: this is done, or kind of whatever. The next morning,
- 9:29Speaker 1: the next crew comes in. It maybe the same guys
- 9:31Speaker 1: that were there yesterday, or so maybe some new guys. Uh,
- 9:34Speaker 1: they forgotten, oh we forgot to insulate. That's that little
- 9:37Speaker 1: area that's scuttle and they're onto the next next thing
- 9:41Speaker 1: nobody even knows, nobody reveals. They call it an insulation
- 9:45Speaker 1: person and they look up there and kind of peek
- 9:48Speaker 1: around and like everything looks okay. We'll throw some more
- 9:50Speaker 1: insalation on.
- 9:51Speaker 2: You'll be on here.
- 9:52Speaker 1: It highlights the importance of it. And I know I
- 9:55Speaker 1: run for it's the work you guys did for me
- 9:57Speaker 1: quite a bit, and I do it not only on
- 9:59Speaker 1: the show Andrew, but I tell people all the time
- 10:00Speaker 1: about what a great job you guys do. But that
- 10:02Speaker 1: is something that's that's big is is how thorough they were.
- 10:06Speaker 1: Now we had our roof free done and some other
- 10:08Speaker 1: things done by Larshalom Services. This wasn't like let's stand
- 10:13Speaker 1: on the front lawn, let's talk. Let me take out
- 10:15Speaker 1: my phone take a couple of pictures. This was like like,
- 10:19Speaker 1: we're gonna get up on the roof and we're gonna,
- 10:21Speaker 1: you know, look at like every little aspect. We're gonna
- 10:24Speaker 1: go up in the attic and like, why are you
- 10:25Speaker 1: guys worrying about a roof from the attic. It goes
- 10:27Speaker 1: to that that thoroughness that runs throughout the company and
- 10:30Speaker 1: whether it's whether it's the roof, whether it's the insulation
- 10:34Speaker 1: any any aspect of your home. You're not simply gonna
- 10:37Speaker 1: gonna stand out in the front lawn or kind of
- 10:39Speaker 1: give a quick visual. Literally, your guys are trained to
- 10:42Speaker 1: be extremely thorough when it comes to that, to that
- 10:46Speaker 1: home inspection.
- 10:47Speaker 2: That's how we're trained, you know. And I don't I'm not.
- 10:50Speaker 2: I don't want to talk bad about other companies, but
- 10:52Speaker 2: I know what happened here. You have a company that
- 10:55Speaker 2: comes in and does new construction. So like on my
- 10:57Speaker 2: new home, we did not insulate my new home because
- 11:00Speaker 2: we don't. We're not. Our expertise is not new construction.
- 11:05Speaker 2: Our expertise is fixing older homes. So we had a
- 11:09Speaker 2: different company do it. But I was here when they
- 11:12Speaker 2: did it. And actually the guys that did it were phenomenal,
- 11:15Speaker 2: like they knew what they were doing. But a lot
- 11:19Speaker 2: of these companies, if we're blowing insulation in, like these
- 11:22Speaker 2: guys are making fifteen, eighteen, twenty bucks an hour, And
- 11:26Speaker 2: for some people that's good. But like if you've ever
- 11:29Speaker 2: been up in an attic and worked like twenty bucks
- 11:31Speaker 2: an hour, yeah, it is not a pleasant job. And
- 11:35Speaker 2: people will say to us, well, you're so expensive, Well,
- 11:38Speaker 2: well we are, but we create careers. Okay, it's not
- 11:42Speaker 2: just a job, it's a career. And these people are
- 11:45Speaker 2: with us for a long time because you know, we're
- 11:49Speaker 2: not a union, but we have union wages. We want
- 11:53Speaker 2: to bring people in, we want to train people, we
- 11:55Speaker 2: want to make them experts. We want them to stay.
- 11:57Speaker 2: And if you're not making a good living, probably not
- 12:00Speaker 2: going to stay. So when I say we have insulation
- 12:03Speaker 2: technicians that make really good living, we do, and we
- 12:07Speaker 2: have to be more expensive for that. Now one of
- 12:09Speaker 2: my techts, this happens to us too. But my text
- 12:13Speaker 2: catch it. Like we've went to homes where we've sold
- 12:15Speaker 2: a job and my sales rep missed a hidden aticp.
- 12:18Speaker 2: My texts find it, they know they find it, and
- 12:22Speaker 2: then we have we can't leave that home without fixing it, right,
- 12:26Speaker 2: because now we're back to square one. So yes, we're
- 12:31Speaker 2: not cheap, but because it's because they're trained. It's because
- 12:34Speaker 2: we have people that knows what are going on. So
- 12:36Speaker 2: when this new home was being built, they probably went
- 12:39Speaker 2: with the cheapest insulation company to blow some insulation up
- 12:42Speaker 2: because it's somewhat of an afterthought and it just got
- 12:45Speaker 2: missed and they didn't do anything wrong. They just didn't know.
- 12:48Speaker 1: We talked this morning with Andrew Larson of Larsen Home Services.
- 12:51Speaker 1: You talk about doing the job right and making sure
- 12:54Speaker 1: that it's a thorough job. You mentioned too, the folks
- 12:57Speaker 1: at Larsen Home Services. If you don't follow them on
- 12:59Speaker 1: social media, make sure you do, especially Facebook. I follow
- 13:03Speaker 1: them there and some great videos and other great information
- 13:05Speaker 1: available to you at larsenome Services Facebook page. But the
- 13:08Speaker 1: other thing you'll notice is they'll do posts every couple
- 13:11Speaker 1: of weeks and you'll see seven years, ten years, five years.
- 13:16Speaker 1: Recognize the employees that have been with the company even
- 13:20Speaker 1: longer than some of those.
- 13:21Speaker 2: But you're talking about fifteen We've got fifteen years, you know. Easy.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like there's a reason for that because they're
- 13:28Speaker 1: doing great work. They're proud of the work they do,
- 13:30Speaker 1: they're treated well. When it comes to people taking care
- 13:32Speaker 1: of your house, you want to make sure that they
- 13:34Speaker 1: are as invested in all as you are. And that's
- 13:37Speaker 1: the other thing too with large home services. There's a
- 13:38Speaker 1: reason why Andrew put his name on the business is
- 13:41Speaker 1: because he's invested in this as well. Give him a
- 13:43Speaker 1: call this morning again, beat the cold, start getting that
- 13:47Speaker 1: stuff done. Have him out for an analysis, a very
- 13:50Speaker 1: thorough look at your home. Give them call Larstome Services
- 13:52Speaker 1: this morning. Tel for a number six oh eight five
