- Ranch Wives: hmm. wow. I don't know. It's I've never it never occurred to me that we're just like running our heads through things. Yeah. Like what are we why why? What like how? Where have you found a cow where it is not supposed to be? Like out, like hauled your fence and out or like Like fence, dugout, stuck in between trees, hay bales, like Okay yeah. Where are these cows going and why? So my milk cow, this isn't quite the same, but like just like a slight intro. Good old we need a birdie update. Yeah. She's in the barnyard right now with the bulls because they're going out to breed soon, but our neighbors had to move his cows, so that's fine. So we moved her so they weren't just bawling at each other across the fence and we don't So is she gonna get bread or what? No, she's we missed her heat by three days. so I'm sending it's fine. it's okay. So anyway, she's in there. But the other day I go to milk and girlfriend had loaded herself because I'm milking her in the squeeze because I don't have a head gate there. Okay. And I don't have my stanch in there. So she had somehow licked the gate open, walked all the way up the alley, and I didn't close it. Like I didn't close off the chute because I didn't think she would go up there willingly. Yeah. Walked herself all the way up, locked herself in the head gate, like loaded herself I don't know, for a couple hours probably. So I showed up there, she just chillin' and I thought Keith was like messing with me. And I was like, Did you load the did you like load Bertie in the squeeze? He's like, Why would I do that? He's like, I'm cooking breakfast. I was like, no, she's loaded herself. She got through a gate, like a hole. he's What do you mean she got through the gate? I'm like, no, the gate is swung the opposite way and not latch. And he was like, Well, did you not chain it? No, I did. But like in my milking barn, I put a dog collar over the gate that leads to her where her grain is. Okay. Otherwise she'll get out. She she's figured out how to get through the chain gates. my goodness. Psychopath. Smart. Anyways, so now she doesn't really like loading. up the chute very much. She like you really gotta shake the grain. Anyway, she was fine. She wasn't even bawling. Like most cows you would think would like, Yeah, hey help stuck. Whatever. Just chillin'. She's just like okay, when are you gonna milk me? Like So I'm assuming she was there for like An hour or two. Yeah. I don't think she was there overnight 'cause I can see where she was like grazing in the spots. But yeah, she just loaded herself. Just loaded herself. Anyway, so that's been fun. That's funny. That's not quite the topic we're going on, but that that's my opener for you. That's a topic. That's fine. What about you? We've had a cow like get stuck, like I don't know, she must have been there for like three days or something 'cause she was Not looking good. But she was alive still. Yeah, alive. Skinny and like, you know, like their eyes are sunken 'cause they're dehydrated. And like her head was stuck between two trees. Kate. That's so she couldn't pull it out. Like I don't even know. Like she'd had to like jump. Jump. And then like slide it down. Yeah. Yep. That's Kate. So three days long we've never had a cow do it. We've had two calves get stuck. The first time Keith or dad has ever seen it was like down in the what we call the old horse pasture. And the like our calves were in there. And yeah, we like drove up on this calf and his head was stuck between two trees. And it must have hap wasn't in bad shape. So we probably caught it like In time, but Keith, like I think I I'll have to see if I have the video still. Keith's like when the when the cow herd bully gets a hold of you or something like that. It was so because he was like we had to like lift him and like wedge his he was so stuck in there. We had to cut the tree down. well you probably would with a cow because how are you gonna get their their head up? Yeah. Why do they do that? Were they baked trees? Yeah. Kate, so Is it in an area that she was supposed to be? Like she must have she didn't get out. It was just like there were trees in it. Okay, you actually have to think about this. So how many like for us, we again grazing tenure, we go to bush often. How many cows like potentially don't come home? Because they were Because something like that has happened. You you'd find them the I'm sh well, our grazing tenure is like two it's a section worth of land full of bush. So I mean Potentially You might find them. yeah. But yeah, like you think about that sometimes. Like that is such a weird Okay, and also cows have like the weirdest shaped heads. So like trying to get them out of anything. Yeah, I feel like going in So maybe and then they get their ears caught or whatever. They get the back of their head caught. That happened to my brother once, actually. What? He c your brother Twice! What? He is so funny. Okay, we had this like coffee table that had like there was like a this is so funny. There was like a Hole and then like a bar of wood or whatever, and then like a hole underneath that you could like crawl under. But he put his head like in to in between like the main table and then like the bar underneath. And he couldn't get it out because of his ears. So what'd you guys have to do? I think I can't remember. I think my mom like pushed him forward and then put his ears right next to his head and then did that. Okay, but he also did this to the trampoline. He was like jumping. Why are we sticking our head in things? He was I think he like fell and then like I don't know, he got his head like in between the two springs and then couldn't get it back out. Ouch Because as you would move the springs would open and close. So it's probably pinching them. Yeah. And as a little sister I was like Not helpful at all. That's funny. No, I haven't I was like, Well, you know, cows and brothers. Yeah, that's fair. Same, same. We might have gotten their heads stuck like My brothers in like the railing. Because they'll be like they'll stick their head through the railing and then like, you know, see what everyone's doing downstairs. And then get the Yeah. You have to like I don't think I've ever had like this urge to stick your head into Even to see what's going on, I don't feel like I've ever just been like, I need to stick my head through here. But maybe boys are just like doo doo doo and then they just like they're like looking and then they just you know, there's a hole that you can just keep on looking through and then you get And you just keep getting closer and closer. I don't know. I don't know if I can relate to this. That is interesting though. We had a cat actually just the so Okay, stop. There's a thing that popped up on the screen. what? No, now it disappeared. I don't know, but you might want to check. I don't know what it said. Is it still recording? I'm not sure that it's This? is it like a it was like a it could be just a message in like a box. Well it's still recording. Is it? Okay. I would call it. Sorry, you're gonna have to cut that, but I was like, it's better than going through the entire episode and being like, What? away though. Yeah, I've never had the urge to be like, I need to stick my head in anywhere. I don't know. Like sta like doesn't that occur to you like that's probably gonna get stuck? I don't think No. I don't think it doesn't have any of you go your thought process. I don't think so. I've licked metal before. My brother did that too. I didn't do that. Did you guys This is the thing about being the youngest sibling, is you watch all your other siblings do stupid stuff and you're like, I'm not gonna do that. Well, my brother liked medals. I never had to. They're pigs. We were always going for the icicle, you know? Mm. You know it just wasn't quite close enough. You and I were talking about this the other day and I was like, remember when every roof had like icicles on it? Yeah. Like all the time. I'm like, I haven't had a solid icicle in so many years. We get solid ones off the tin. Really? Yeah. Like big Okay, maybe that's what it is. I don't know. Everybody does shingles now or something. Well ours. Like we're cabins have icicles too. Yeah, shingles are when we were kids. I have icons. It has shingles. My kids were icicle farming this winter. farming. Yeah, they let them grow to the appropriate size size and then they're ready for harvest. And then they'd pick them all and lay them out to dry them. And they icicle farmed. Wow. They had like rakes and brooms and like to get them off the roof, but like collect them without them falling and breaking. And breaking. It was a whole thing. Wow. to be a child. So, anyways, back to this cows getting their heads stuck. I was driving home one day and the cows were on our field and Jorm was like out feeding, and so I could see him, and I was like, look at all the cows like running towards the hay, like so cute. And then as I'm going around our corner, I just see this cow like in the bush. And I was like, like that. That's not good. Like it's never a good sign when it's just one in their But it's just one by themselves. You're always like, something is wrong here. So then I called him and I was like, You should check that out. And he's like, Yeah, she had her s head stuck between two trees. So did you have to cut it? Or what do you think? I think she wasn't that stuck. I think he just like scared her and then she like kind of jumped up and then pulled it back. But but I thought I was very proud of myself in that moment because I was like, look, I noticed I noticed that's like the The other day, like just a week a not even a week ago, we were driving up on the hill, we'd let our yearlings in to a different thing. And then this like Or yearlings in our young group to breed, whatever. And this one like heifer calf kept like running back, running back, this red angus. And Keith was like getting annoyed because we we like closed the gate on her. She climbed through the fence, like just was like berserk. And so we were like looking for this one calf. And he was like, What is going on? And thankfully, for whatever reason, this calf ran to the one that was stuck. We would have never seen it. Really? Never seen it. Big old steer. He's like my poor buddy. Like just laid down that's crazy was just like he'd given up he was just like laying down he hadn't lost any weight so I'm assuming he wasn't there yeah he was just there for a little bit maybe a day like at most like he still looked really good he wasn't anything but yeah we had that red Angus never had that red Angus never had that red Angus not run back we would have never found it seen it because everything was out there wasn't anybody bawling Bad mum apparently. Yeah. Or maybe she lost hope, was like he's stuck. Stuck. He's stuck. He's done. Yeah. Bye. Yeah. The survival of the fittest, I guess. But yeah, so we just literally like popped him up, Keith lifted him, and I put his head through the hmm. wow. I don't know. It's I've never it never occurred to me that we're just like running our heads through things. Yeah. Like what are we why why? What like how? Yeah. How do we do this? How's your other cabin going? Are we still is it just a free for all out there? It's a free for all, but they're done now, I think, officially. We're done. We're gonna brand on Wednesday. You've nothing left to cab? FYI. I think they're done. We still have three. That are just like I mean I guess we'll see on branding day like. How many? How many? Because Jerm sor sorted out all the opens now. Mm-hmm. So Did you guys preg check this year? No. No. We preg check, but there's like three two or three that were in there that are are open. Most definitely open. Okay, well that's not bad. No, but like odds. It's not great. That's over the ones that we know that slipped. Yeah. I don't know. Did you put your balls out? Or you're doing it. Tomorrow. What about you? No, not yet. Really? you're gonna you're gonna hold our this year. We're doing a later. Lacey says I've got PSDSD. I can't I can't let them out later. If you're planning to go to Mexico again, yeah. Then like you definitely want later. As far back as you can go. That's true. Where do you guys I think we're doing ours end of July. End of July. End of July? Yeah. Yeah, ours will be like the 10th. Probably. Yeah. Ninth, tenth, something like that. Yeah. We have a we have to tag, 'cause that's the other thing. All the late calves, I think there's like seven out there. Normally we tag right away. Yeah. But this last group we like just have it, and now they're too fast. yeah. Okay, I don't know what it is, but they go out on grass. Them guys are stinking fast. Like a two-day old calf is like a beefy little bugger. And they rip around. Yeah. I like I ain't catching a lot. Not a chance. Those guys are so Spunky, it's crazy. My favorite thing is when they like get kicking and jumping and bucking. Yeah. And they're just like running around for no reason. And then all their friends join in. I think that's the funniest thing. I love seeing calves. So cute. Run. Run. Yeah. It's so cute. We were like driving through the young hair. Isn't there a Bible verse about that? Like a calf running through a field? I don't know. I don't know. Okay, I'll have to Google it. But for you who fear my name, the son of righteousness will rise with healing in his wings, and you will go free, leaping with joy like calves led out to pasture. Good memory. Leaping with joy like calves let out to pasture. Those guys leap with joy. I agree. That's the cutest thing. It's so fun. Especially when they're like pretty fresh and they start like scampering in the like after their first good feed, you know what I mean? Like and then they like scamper, but they're still like a little bit like wobbly. Wobbly and like not sure. They remind me of like teen boys, like preteen boys. Just like long arms, long legs, like they don't really understand how to move yet. Yeah. I don't know. It's just it's so much fun. We what was I gonna say? Mm. I don't know. We've had cows like get stuck in dugouts before. Like on a really wet year. they're like drinking on or they break into your dugout and then they get stuck. Like I think we had one or two die one year. 'Cause of that. We had a bull break his his hip. In a dugout. We're assuming so he came up really muddy, but he must have gotten hit Yeah while he was in there and it yes. Like they fought something anyone. Yeah, I don't know. Also where our bulls are right now, there's like a dugout in there, which is whatever. They were fighting 'cause of course when you move you they gotta they fight. They have to fight. We have to organize dominant. Well and then also too one Hold on, I haven't talked to you guys yet about this. We had a bull get out. Did I tell you about this? No. Come home from church two Sundays ago. Get a text. There's a bull out with our heifers. great. Hopefully it's a heifer bull if we're gonna be calving early. Don't have to pull You're gonna win my situation next year. Well hold I think mom well mom mom and dad got him sorted, but like he was still in with probably if those guys have like an hour, they can get a lot done. They can be busy. So, anyways, it's not too early, but it's a little bit early. Little bit early. So yeah, he got out, and this was not so we've had a bowl out three years in a row. Early. Fence problem, correct? Not good. Because people with a lot less acreage than us be keeping their bowls on. Not us. Our bulls were out. So two f two years, for the first two years, it was the same bull. We called him Deadly the Steadly. Yeah. He was out of a f kind of a fence curling bomb. So it was one of our top cows, but it hurt. She's a ten out of ten, except for she can crawl a fence sometimes. Ours only break out if they're out of feed. no. I have a couple that don't believe that fences are for them. Yeah. Cause I guess our yearlings must have been bellaring. Or like our whatever our heifers, our young group out there was. Because there's a lot of bulls that will go through a fence. yeah. You would do three heat. Three. But my opinion is we should make the he fence hot. We either need to force strand it. Or make it hot? Arbowl will get out of the seven strand barbed wire fence. That's the corrals that the posts are like half the distance. Golly. Yeah. I don't know. He was out. They're desperate. So the first the first year or the first two years I was like, Well, this is an S problem because we chose this was a chance. We knew that this was a chance. Yeah. So whatever. Bad call. We did what we did. He was out, that's fine. But this year This guy's never been out. We've had him for three years. He's just loved his life, done his thing, minded his own business. Today, no. He was out there like hot sink. And then he's also more of our one of our what do I call it? So you know how some you can tell were like raised in pens and are a little more calm around people, and then some are raised in like the bush? Yeah. He's one of our like more of a bush pull. Like he don't really like to see it coming, I guess. He's not mean. But he don't wanna be near you. Like he's not hang we're not hanging out by any means. Like 14L, he's a trash bull. That guy comes up for a scratch. Like he's huge. He's a ten out of ten bull. Comes up for a nice little scratch. I actually have a video we can post. He's so sweet. Not this guy though. The guy that was out was not that. So then we threw so for three year two years, I've used Birdie as bait to get said bull. And back to no, you did send us a video, but you never told us how it went. So we get her because it was like six PM or something. I think that was just maybe when I set the video. But no, we like got home from church and had lunch and dealt with it. No, I think it was earlier. It must not have It could prove to be my service. Who knows? I never know. Anyways, so we I walked her up. She's also never been on a trailer. So what the plan was we'd walk her, walk them up, and then we were trailer down. Well we weren't sure. We weren't sure if we were gonna do that if we're just gonna like chase them down. Chase the young group out and then chase them down the road. But because he's a bit on the spicy end, we're like, no, he's gotta get trailered because he's gonna outrun and he also mom didn't want him in her her garden. Valid. Seems reasonable. I'm not yeah, I seem that's fair. So trailering seemed like the best deal. So we did that. Well, I'm using Birdie. I threw Bertie's grain bucket in there. She loads perfectly. Well, then we couldn't get the bull in. He's like running around this pen. She's probably like, what? Yeah. So then she eats her grain, backs on Eatherland, was like watching us, and then he just loaded. But then I couldn't get her on. So we just shut. We just shut. Yeah. Put her in, and yeah, she she didn't. He apparently was not getting in with her. No. Apparently. He followed her out. No, she unloaded herself and then he just ran up beside her. No, but like to get her out of the he was in the corral. yeah, he was in a corral system all like on the hill. And so they'd blocked we blocked him in there. Yeah, both of my cows were used as bait because Jaws is in that group. So Keith left her in there. Yeah. Chewed all the yearlings out, left her in there, and she's just coming for scratches. She's like, This is the life. That's so funny. Anyways, yeah, no. And then of course we missed birds. I don't have any cows that come for scratches. Okay, so having a cow that comes for scratches is good sometimes, but then there's other times. Yeah, like for example, that was a great time because I can she can like sit in there and yeah, whatever. She's not she kind of like calms the bowl down. But then there's time when you're like trying to move. And they don't move. Because they would just like to be scratched. So she's like they just want to hang out with you. Yeah. Yeah. So there is like a perk and then there's like a downside. Keith said as a kid they had a a cow. Well I think it was 23 sister. Anyways, whatever. That was like super friendly. And she would let them like s sit on them on the w way down from up north. They would like jump on the cow's back like ride her down. That's fun. I was like, that's so cute. That is cute. I could never I just did photos for somebody and they had they like fall in the springtime. And seriously, we're in like the like field that they're in and I'm like taking photos of them, their cute little family like walking away and these foals are like coming up to me and like nudging me and like wanting pets. And I was just like, okay, I love this, but like I'm doing my job. Yeah, this is not gonna work. But I think this is so sweet. Like what the heck? That is really s I feel like any baby that's like my favorite part about spring. Chicks, foals. Not that I've ever experienced a foal, but like cows. Did you guys go to the parade this year? No speaking of cows? Yes. There was the cow that was there was Somebody rode a cow. Yes. What? Through the parade. At the Canada Day. There was like horses. Yeah, at the Canada Dai Parade. There was one like f it was fluffier, wasn't it? Yeah, it was ha I think it was probably half island. Yeah. They rode it? Yeah. It was saddled up and then. It was so cute. Yeah. Yeah. Like a kick? So we went down they were like part of down at the bottom. So we went down and like checked it out. It would've been yeah. It would have been like a two year old probably. Yeah. It was cute. It was so cute. It was very cute. That's so funny. The kids were like, Mom, they're riding a cow. Your kids like, we're next. We're doing it. Yeah. Yeah. You could trade a fluffy for your kids. I know. You totally could. You totally could. year. Yeah. Do you have a bowl of fluffy? No. We ate him. Or do you just We ate him. What was he mean? no. Isn't that him? Isn't that him there? No. That's a cow. do we have a picture? Yeah. A shaman came for scratches. He was nice. Shaman. Shaman. What a name. He was I think we're If he was going somewhere, yeah, we do. I was gonna say he would like you couldn't change his mind. Like if he was going there, he was going there. Like he hiked off to grandpa's. So it's like what, seven miles down the road. my god ain't no stopping him in the middle of the night. I get a call. yeah. I think you go to Bulla on the highway. And like, yeah, I couldn't Stop him. But the crazy thing is, I'm following him in the ranger because you can't stop him. Because he'll just keep walking through and then he'll like hook you. And I'm like, I think he's going to grandpa's. So like I So just let him go. I don't really know what to do at this point. My kids are little. I can't go get the truck and trailer and rope them and throw in. David's working. So I called his buddy and was like, So Shaman's on his way to grandpa's. This is going to take a while. And he's like, That's a height. I'll come like we'll load I'll come load him. We were Almost to the highway before he showed up. And he'd like straight down the highway. Like he knew where he was going and he was gone. That's crazy. But like he would not stay in a fence because he knew how to run his horns. So he hooked the wire. Yeah. And we don't want we didn't want him breeding the commercial herd. Yeah. And so it was just kind of a pain. Yeah. And I would say like if we've had to get like any marriage fights, it was over that stupid bull. So are you gonna get a new Highland bowl? No, we're just your Highland story. We're just gonna leave them with the commercials. Yeah. Cause a commercial bred to Highland actually makes good. And Highlands don't sell very well in auction. No. They sell good privately, but they don't sell good at auction. Yeah. You have to have the right market for them and stuff. Private market. Yeah. So we're just gonna breed them commercial and then So what's their calves end up like weighing out of? A little bit smaller, but bread commercial is not that much. Not much. Yeah. Highlands have really good milk. That's what I've heard. I've actually They just take longer to finish. Mm-hmm. Yeah. So So you can have like a milk cow Highland? Yeah, we're gonna breed the year like the heifer Highland. Yeah. It's my daughter's to Holly's mini jersey. Are you? Yeah. Okay, I need a full report on how this works out. So I'm not entirely sure that she's gonna catch this year. Cause Highlands also take I think an extra year to catch. to mature. So she might not catch this year. Okay. So it might be like. But we're gonna try. Yeah, this will be. And we're gonna try and Yeah. That's so good. So when the cows go to grandpa's, she's gonna go to Holly's. And then we'll see if we can get like a mini. That'd be so Okay, that would be stinging cute. Plus you'd get milk. Yeah. Yeah. Are you gonna milk it or is Holly gonna milk it? Yeah, what's I don't know. We'd probably we might if it well, A she has to catch, have a calf. B then it would also have to be a heifer. True. Which Holly hasn't had any steers out of her any of her milk cows. Really? They all come out as heifers. so my full milk cows? Heifers. My beef cow? Only steers. Jaws has only given us steers. Huh. Huh. Only will Dobbs gave me a heifer and then Bertie gave me a heifer. Yeah. Well milk cows. Yeah. Nothing I will ever do. But then for me. I don't think we'll do milk cow either. I will not do milk cows. I think having a cross is good because you can stick their calf on and like Yeah. I don't have to like for Bertie, I don't have to worry about I did when she first calved. See, but like I have like the perfect situation because Yeah, you do. You absolutely I just go milk. Yeah. And then Yeah, you can just go and milk. Yeah. Yeah, that makes sense. Yeah. And then continue on. And then and then she can leave. Yeah. Whenever she wants. Yeah. Yeah. So she's got somebody for backup. So I don't know that I'd yeah, I don't know that she just I'd leave it with her. We don't have a barn either. Well, at some point, like she's already got seven. She's seven. Milk calves? Well, like no, there's more now that the last like I think there might be eight or nine with this last cow that calved. So like n they're not all milking, obviously. No, no, no. Like they're calves. No, yeah, calves. But they're seven. Wow. That's impressive. That's cool. So at some point we gotta like me. I'm not. Well she's hear what? I g I can have birds and I can have peaches, but I think most of them are It's valid. gonna well like get have a calf, she'll train in stanchion to be a milk cow and then sell it. Sell it, yeah. Yeah after the first calf. Yeah, yeah, because there's a lot of people looking for that. Yeah. And most of them don't want like To have to teach start, yeah. It's interesting. I didn't have to teach birds necessarily. She always watched me milk jaws. Cause like not that jaws Jaws was just in like birds was just in with jaws. Yeah. All the time. So I would just load jaws in the gate or I well for the first time I used to talk. Really? Yeah, like she'd kick and kick and kick and kick and not like hard kicking. No. But just like, you know, that irritating little un Yeah. I'm annoyed with you and I'm gonna push everything over. No, I tied I tied Bird's foot back for a bit 'cause like her bag was pretty engorged when she first calved. Yeah. But I didn't have to And then just like I do tie we'd had to tie her foot, obviously. But if she wasn't eating and like just like Down, done. Like she'd inhale it. Really? And then she just like back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. So that you couldn't like I just I used to just let Bertie when she was like young, like a calf slash yearling. I just let her w like come up with me while I melt. She did too. She's seen it. But I would also give her th the other thing I did, I don't know if this is part of it or not. I could not tell you. I only gave grain when she went to the headgate. I never grain grained her. She doesn't she didn't get grain either in the headgate. But as soon as the grain was out, she'd stand perfectly. She'd inhale the grain, and as soon as the grain was gone, she was just fidgety. Right. That's how Dobby was. When I first started milking her. Yeah. That cow was out of grain. So then we've But she was also machine milked because I got her from a dairy. Yeah. So as soon as she was done And or machine, she was just But so then We'd start like as soon as she was running out to keep her from fidgeting. Because as soon as she back and forth, it pops off. Yeah. Expanded. With the machine. So we'd like give her more grain. But then that kinda escalated the problem because then it just kept getting worse. Or if she did run out, then she was really mad. Yeah, no, I haven't Mind though, Birdie was also a bottle baby, I wonder if that has something to do with it too, because they're just in general bottle babies are just way more chill. Gamer. They're just a little more chill. Yeah. So she'll stand and it might just be personality too. Because she was always above. Yeah, and different breeds too. She'd look at you and be like, you're gonna lock me up for the night? I'm out. See ya. Yeah, that's peaches. That can't be running. I just let Birdie into like right now with her out with the bulls, I just let Birdie into the curl system to graze and leave peaches on the other side of the gate because I can't Get her in. I can't get her in. Yeah. She's horrible to deal with. But the nice thing with birds is when she starts kicking me, like if she starts lifting her leg or anything, she does not really a kick, it's more of like a lift of the leg and down. She just kind of goes back and forth. I that's when she's in heat. that's her sign to being in heat. Otherwise, she doesn't hardly move. wow. Other than when the chickens try to steal her grain. I have this one rooster. I don't know what this is. He always jumps in the bucket of her grain. I'm like, you're going to die. She's got horns. Like this is a bad my goodness. And so he'll like try and so then that's that upsets. Well, I mean valid. I'm a little mad too if there was a rooster seam. But like Bertie's so chill that like even the chickens will like cross under her while I'm milking, which I can't really control, but I try not to let it happen. I try to like shoe them away. 'Cause I don't really like the chickens in there. But when there's no snow around to enclose the barn, there's like little there's like this much of a Right. They can get under. Normally they don't bugger, but if there's nothing for them to pick at, like in the shrub, if they're bored, yeah, they're dinks. And so th this one will just like walk under her. I'm like, there's no grain under here. I think she wants the milk though. Because she like walks under as you're squeezing a like Like you know how you you can like hear it hitting the bucket. That chicken's just like nosy, like mm. What is that? You're gonna have some milk. It's weird. It's weird. I've been trying to train the cats to like come out milking with me. Yeah. I'm trying to train Walter to come out and I try a squirt in his mouth. He won't go he gets like close to the barn. So if you have milk in here, he'll my word. So growing up, we had a cat. The barn cat? Yeah. Yeah. Like across the barn. You could sit there and he would be like Yeah. And wait for you to squirt it and then 'cause we milked normally there was like two of us and we'd milk and there was two to three cows. Yeah. So there's normally like two or three of us milking. And then we like each person because there was like four stalls in the barn. Yeah. So every cow like they wasn't one at a time. So then it would just like scooch over to the next cow and just like, excuse me, I need help. Okay, so when you guys were so funny growing up with milking, obviously you've been milking your entire life then. Yes. Did they were they in Headgate or were they halter trained to milk? Mm, they just stood there. They just stood there with nothing? They walked into the stall. Just hung out. Yeah, 'cause it was like I never tied up a flag before or like nothing. Like I guess there was one cow that we sometimes would, 'cause she'd like pick up her foot and drop manure in the pail. Mm-hmm. Like she wasn't kicking. Yeah. That's why I type Bertie's back. It's cause she just lifts her foot. Yeah, and then and then it drops the And then yeah, it just like the pail gets full of crud. Yeah. But no, like they walked into the stanchion. Yeah. wow. Hmm. There's walking to Yeah. Hmm. Some of them would back out a little early, so then we had a chain. w the all the stalls had a chain, but we almost never used them. And it would it was like spulted to the side of the wall and then it just wraps around their neck and you just clip it. That's it. And yeah, that was it. But most of the time we didn't even use it. They'd walk in. We also like when you do it as a kid. I assume for the first like learning, but I don't ever remember learning how to milk. I just remember going out and doing it. And I like what age? We were really fast. So the cow's not standing there for half an hour waiting to get milk. Right. Like I remember filling those what is it, gallon and a half? Those big metal pails. Gallon and a half, two gallon. Yeah. In under five. That's impressive. I don't think I'm that fast. I'm probably like a gallon and a half for fifteen. yeah. Like I've slowed down since I have to Okay, also, do you notice like the teet size? I don't know for you, like did you guys did your milkhouses' kids like have good sized teets? Like good melking teeth? I feel like I can't really say because I had small hands as a kid. Or like smaller hands. Yeah. So I feel like my ratio, like I probably would be like, Yeah, they were huge. But they probably weren't actually that big. I kid you not are the size when I pinky. Yeah. Like they're th they're probably as thick as my thumb, but like the size might think yeah. Yeah, Holly has one and it's like it's literally easy fingers. you can't yeah, you don't even hardly you strip it like that. Yeah. Like you can't really get around it to like squeeze it. You kinda just have to strip Yeah, which like it's not bad. I remember like we do it doesn't Yeah, that makes things slower. In my opinion, I find I'm slower with it. I don't know if I picked that up. Like to strip it versus squeeze it. We'd switch. Back in the So when yeah, when your hand got tired of Yeah, I probably do strip now. I feel like I always with with Dobby just like squeezed. Yeah. But be now because I have to strip, I feel like I probably switch more without noticing I'm switching because now I'm used to doing it. Yeah. But I don't know if it was as fast necessarily. I don't know. Yeah. I just don't have the drive to ever do that. To melt? Yeah. I didn't necessarily like it for like n having a milk cow. I more so wanted it because I didn't want the milk. would you not feel about chickens though you don't it's not worth it no okay that's fair I would way sooner just buy my eggs from yeah okay speaking of chickens back on this topic yeah move the gals You said you've no desire to be a milk cow. Yeah, and Lacey said she doesn't have any desire to have chickens. No. Yeah, it's funny how everybody's just so different, right? Yeah. That like I just don't care for milk how you know like the whole like homestead vibe. And you get chickens and that's where it starts. Yeah, no. Yeah. I had chicken strictly just because I we were going through so many eggs. I thought it would be cheaper. It's not. Once you invest in the like once you invest in the infant infrastructure. The egg quality is ten times better. Ten times better. Love the egg. The price. No, because between your feed, the infrastructure to the time that you're using to do it, it's not actually cheaper. You are in general you're probably better off to like just pay somebody for their farm eggs. Yeah. They're like What's eggs going for in your guys' area? I know. That's what I was just about to ask. What are they going for in like six, I think. Aren't they? Yeah, I think so. I the last couple of places I've seen has been like six. Yeah, ours is like six to seven, so I split But I do six fifty. Yeah, I do six fifty. 'Cause it's between the two. But there's some I've seen lot of people in town like just doing six. no. I've seen like up upward of ten. My Are we even allowed to talk about selling eggs? Yeah, because you can buy farm fresh eggs. It's just they're in butcher block. Yeah. Yeah, they're like I've noticed they're like around, but I was like, what's the vibe on Yeah, yeah. Okay, anyways, so my brother-in-law's mom, she's still selling hers for like four dollars or like three dollars. I'm like these old Mennonite ladies. Yeah, because they always got a hot cup, and so that's cheap. Yeah. yeah. Yeah. That's the thing. Like, well that that the other thing too is some people don't raise their prices and maybe it's because they'd have the chickens regardless. So they don't they're not making anything. Some of them though I think they've had the same client or Three clients. Forever. Yeah. For forever. Yeah. Like I had to tell someone at clients I got my prices though because the feed went up so much in like two years. It was crazy. And like we were lots of them though are grain farmers too. Yeah. So their chickens get whatever's left over. They're doing their own grain. Yeah. Like the leftov like not the leftover moldy stuff, but like, do you know? Like they clean out the bottom of the grain bin. Yeah, it's And that's what their chickens eat. They're not going to the feed store and paying I don't know, fifty bucks or whatever it is for a bag of grain. Yeah, what is it? It's like twenty twenty bucks. I don't know. Something like that. Yeah. You guys need to bring your truck out and just buy a mini bulk bag. I know, we really store 'cause it's cheaper. I do, and I've told that to Joram, but the problem is storing it. you got nowhere to put it? I have no way to put Put it your C can. I guess it depends what's in your C cam then. Yeah. Ours is in that trailer. No. Ours is in that I should do a trailer tour for you guys. Yeah. Keith like cleaned it all up and we tore out like a shelf and it's now all over this like makes me so happy. This is like the most minimal thing. But that trailer is like our feed, our salt, our mineral, the dog feed, and the electric fencing stuff. But before it used to just get chucked in there and hope for the best. Yeah. This year it's very well organized. Makes me very happy. Ooh, I like it. Yes. Very small thing. I love Men are so good at like organizing. I don't know what it is. Is David good at organizing things? Yes. Because Dwarm is like so good at organizing. And then he's not organize anything else. It depends on what it is. Yeah, but if it's either like I'm gonna organize the tax shed, he organizes the tax shed. And then he doesn't for another year, but Yeah. Like my kitchen will be a mess, it'd be a mess until David's like, I can't deal with this anymore. Then he tears the stove apart, he tears the espresso machine apart, he tears everything apart and cleans it with like the teeniest little brush till it's like perfect and shiny. Yes. Puts it all back together and it looks great. Yeah. But like then for the rest of the year. They'll just like leave it. Yeah. Keith gets like his sh well, not maybe all the time, but f he goes through the shed and like he's got shelves and they're all labeled and it's all organized and then it's like good for like A little bit and then it's just like everything gets chunked in there. And then when you can't find it, you just He's gotta organize it all. I will say that his picker truck actually is very organized. yeah, Keith's work truck, his mechanics truck. Yeah. He knows where every single and he puts it back. And he puts it back. He cleans them and puts them back. It's never just like willy-nilly. His truck is like when it comes to Keith's tools, very yeah, I could see that. Tools and like parts, I would say, are like the most Yeah. Yeah, like his thing. Yeah. That's Joram and his combine. Like he keeps it pristine. Like shoes off. He'll vacuum it. yeah. He'll take his shoes off. I mean you're in there all day. yeah. Yeah. So he'll take his shoes off. He'll like he has like little vacuum he'll like vacuum it up. It's a combine vacuum. Yes, he'll like clean everything up and he's like he does not love it when his brothers use the combine because then they'll leave like a garbage piece or like there's a little tiny like something from their kids joining and he's just like stop the combine. But then his Yes when you come to into the house. And leave the dishes on the counter. yeah. That's like, I can't remember what was it. when I there's like this meme going around, this video going around, and it's like when your husband says there's no right way to like organize the dishwasher, and it's like a a wife out on the lawnmower, just like zigging and zagging and like all over the map. I thought that was so funny. I'm not the dishwasher I'm not particular about. But there is certain things. David zigs and zags more on the lawnmower than I do. that's funny. Yeah, he'll like he'll like take out a little patch and then like Back and forth. And then he like goes over here and does this little patch and then finally eventually they're the dorm is like lying down. Line up. Line down. I've got Also the dishwasher thing, so funny because so many I know so many women who are like, I don't like my husband touching the dishwasher, putting dishes away because he does it wrong. And so I've had my dishwasher for like well, it's been like eight months now. I've been like loading it the wrong way this whole time. What do you mean the wrong way? Also you, of all people. Yeah I know. I understand that I just wouldn't care, but it's you Okay, so I have it's just this one spot where I put all the kids plates because you know the kids plates all have like lips. Yeah, yeah yeah. And they're like IKEA kids plates, so they all have like the lip around. I had been loading them so that they're like facing up in the dishwasher. Don't they need to face down? Cause that's where the water exactly. I I didn't even think about that. I was just like loading them facing up. And then one day Joram like loaded the dishwasher, put them facing down, and then I was like, How did you get these so clean? The lip like water always got caught on the lip and the dishes were still dirty. And I was like, I appreciate this different perspective in my life. My dishwasher is on the fret. No. We had to order a part. Actually, to be honest, we've had a lot of issues with our dishwasher. Is it a Bosch? No. That's why. I know. Bosches. I know. I know. Anyways, we've- Seriously, Bosches are great. I don't think I've ever had a dishwasher. I you know what? I used to really enjoy doing dishes until I got to the point where I was like, actually my time isn't worth it to do. the dishes. Like that sounds bad. But Well when I do harvest suppers in in the springtime, I'm like, I need a dishwasher. Yeah, there's certain seasons where like especially when we were both working out, we'd wake up, do breakfast. I didn't have time to do dishes after breakfast. Yeah. So we'd come home, we'd unload all of our lunch dishes, dinner dishes, and breakfast. And I was like, this I don't like we were spending too much time doing It's like two. Well, and then at that point too, we were still hauling water. So I was going through more water than it would cost to just like put a dishwasher. Put a dishwasher in. So there is kind of now we don't haul, we like we're on our dugout. Right. So it probably wouldn't mind you though the first three years we didn't have any water in our dugout. Yeah. Right. This is probably this is the first year that dugout has ever been full. Yeah. So there's also that. My dishwasher tells me how much water I use. that is bougie. That's very fancy. I don't know how we digress to here, but I yeah. Bosch sponsor us. Brianna needs a new dishwasher. A new one. yeah, no. I don't know. I I rely heavily planning out the kitchen, the thought of like I should Plan somewhere for a dishwasher. I you don't even think about it. No, it hasn't crossed my mind. I honestly when I want like a slow evening, I'll choose to do dishes. Like that's it's yeah, whatever. But as for like efficiency of the house, the dishwasher has saved my hiny a lot. My mom has a dishwasher in her house, never used it. Ever. She l like she doesn't use her dishwasher? wow. No. Like to this day doesn't. Even when we were young kids, she hardly yeah. Hardly used it. She likes to like do dishes dishes. She'll come over like when we when she was working for us. Like helping us or whatever. she'd come over for a bit and like if I dish it, she'd just do I'm like, I'll I'll pay It's her love language. seriously. yeah, acts of service are kind of gifts and acts of service are her Yeah. Love language in some sense to me, anyways. But yeah, like I I Anyways, this thing's on the fridge. It sounds like it's a it's gonna take off. It sounds like a jet engine in there. It sounds so bad. Yeah, like it literally well, so we like replaced one part in it already, and all of a sudden it's just like really loud. He's like, maybe I put something in like upside down or like whatever. We can't figure it out. It's so loud. But we also don't know because our water is also really hard. So maybe when we replaced it. That's how it sounded to start with, and we just have gotten used to it not working yeah super well. So it sounded like Does it clean really well now? Well it was, and now it's not because some other thing w just went in it. The part actually just got delivered. That's why this was on the topic. so like to be determined. He's turned into like a small appliance. Repairman. That's so funny. He also has a fridge out there he's gonna fix. Anyway, besides the list. Yeah, it's fine. Besides the point. That's so funny. Yeah. Yeah, I guess that's it. How we got here, I don't know, but here we are. Here we are. Welcome to the chaos of our week. Thanks for hanging out with us today on Ranch Wives Unsupervised.
