- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Well, good day, everybody.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: I am thrilled that you are joining us again on this podcast, North Bible Recap.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: And it is episode, let me get my fingers out, number nine.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Nine.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: Can you believe it, Pastor Christian?
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: Yes, sir.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: We've got this far.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: What are you gonna do when you run out of fingers?
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: I guess I'm gonna stop doing that.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: So next time it's gonna be the 10.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: Then after that, it's like, okay, I might say it, but that's it.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: So hey, thank you.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: I I feel like that um people have been encouraged and blessed.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Matter of fact, you made a statement to me before we started.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: People catching you in the lobby uh after experience saying they enjoyed it.
- 0:48SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: So if you're enjoying it, let us know, comment, share this.
- 0:52SPEAKER_01: One of the best ways you can help us is by liking this and share it with someone who will be uh a blessing to them, especially if someone is following along our Bible reading plan.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: This podcast, it's a complement of our scripture reading plan.
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: So we don't want you to put this above the reading plan.
- 1:08SPEAKER_01: We want you to read the word of God and use this to understand kind of what we're talking about.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: So I'm glad you brought that up because I think it's so important because sometimes people get books, Bibles with like a lot of commentary, and they spend more time reading the commentary than they read the Bible.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: And uh, which that's nothing wrong with the commentary, uh, but read the Bible.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: That's why I I love when I'm reading the Bible.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: I have uh two Bibles.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: One, it's a study Bible that has a lot of commentary to it, but then I like to read one, the one I have right now that's very marked up and beat up, is no commentary in it.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Uh, and I just like reading God's word and meditating on it and thinking on it.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: So I appreciate you saying that.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: Um, but we hope that this is a supplement.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: Yep, it is an add- of benefit that gives people a deeper understanding and knowledge of the things of God.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: And today we're talking about Hey, we're talking about Galatians, uh, Ecclesiastes, and then also the Song of Solomon, but more modern term is Song of Songs.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: And so I'm excited about it.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: Yep, yep.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: We're gonna be talking about, and we're gonna start with Galatians.
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: Now, Galatians is one of the letters that Paul wrote to one of the churches that he established.
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: We can find this in the book of Acts, but something important about Galatians that we that we need to understand is not a specific church, it's not a specific city, it's actually a region.
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: It's it's a big, big area that he's writing this letter for all of that region.
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: It's kind of like to say a letter to the state of Oklahoma instead of Oklahoma City.
- 2:40SPEAKER_01: When it when the letter of the to the Philippians is to a specific city, but Galatians is a letter into the whole region and the whole area.
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: So that's gonna help us kind of like shape and understand why Paul is writing the way that he's writing.
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: Now, um, one of our friends, Manny Rango, uh, and one of one of the things that I've heard him teach on Galatians, he said that in Galilee, in the book of Galatians, we have a different Paul.
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: Paul was much younger, and he says, You see him that he's very fiery, he's he's talking um with a lot of passion, but in some ways, very, very harsh.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: And he says, in other letters, we see more of a father figure, how he's saying the same thing that he tells the Galatians, he just said it differently.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: So when I heard I when I read that, I'm like, okay, this is this is Paul's probably known as his first letter that he wrote.
- 3:31SPEAKER_01: Now, uh the book of Acts, chapter, I believe it's chapter 16.
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: Uh, Paul and Silas take this young Timothy and they go into the second missionary journey.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: And in that second missionary missionary journey, um they the there's they go to the church of Philippi first.
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: Um, and this is a place where Lydia gets saved.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: Um, then you have uh Paul um is thrown Paul and Silas are thrown in prison because he deliver the demon-possessed uh little girl.
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: So they threw him in the prison, and then a jailman gets um gets saved.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: So all of that is leading to towards him making it making all this journey where Paul is planting churches and he's being kicked out because of persecution, and now he is writing to this letter.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: So uh one thing that I want to say in the Galatians when it when it starts, he says Paul an apostle, not from men, nor uh through men, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead and all the brothers who are uh with him.
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: Paul chapter one, he's talking about his uh apostleship, how he got his gospel from God.
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: And he's saying this because the big issue in Galatia and this whole region is that Jews are persecuting Jews, non-Jews are persecuting Christian Jews, and they're trying to make uh them like Jews, and Christians, Jews, are trying to get now the Gentiles to become Jewish before they become Christians.
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: And Paul is writing, this is not okay.
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: The Judaizers they were appointed by the Pharisees in Jerusalem, but he's his first sentence, I an apostle of Christ, I have received this gospel from God Himself.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: So Paul is writing to this church because the big issue is that um Judaizer Christians, Judaizers, sorry, Jews that are Christians are trying to be uh trying to get them to become Jews with circumcision.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: And there's something that you you read here.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: Uh a theme of this book is the it's Christian liberty.
- 5:54SPEAKER_01: The key words that you're gonna read often is law 32 times, faith 22 times, flesh 18 times, spirit 18 times.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: So these are the themes that he's talking uh through the whole book.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: Um Galatians chapter 1, verse uh six through nine.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: Can you read that?
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: Do you have it in that?
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: And just a comment on what you mentioned on those words that were repeated again and again again.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: Law, faith, law, faith.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: Those are opposites.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: And um in flesh, spirit, flesh and spirit.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: That's the that's the battle that we still wrestle with today.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: Uh those are the things that we struggle with.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: We've got the things that we know we should do, that's the right thing to do.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: Nothing wrong with the law as far as that is concerned, but yet we can't we can't uphold it.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: Um it's by faith in Christ that we um can actually do these things.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: And then flesh and spirit, our flesh and that wants its way, and then the spirit that we've got to lean into is say, okay, I surrender to God and the spirit of God.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so let's pick up Galatians chapter one.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: You said verse six.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: You mean read through verse nine?
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: It says, I am shocked that you are turning away so soon from God.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: Who called you to himself through the loving mercy of Jesus Christ.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: You are following a different way that pretends to be the good news.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: But it is not the good news at all.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: You are being fooled by those who deliberately twist the truth concerning Christ.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: Let God's curse fall on anyone, including us, or even an angel from heaven, who preaches a different kind of good news than the one we preached to you.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: I say again that we have said before, if anyone preaches any other good news than the one you welcomed, let that person be cursed.
- 7:50SPEAKER_01: He is strong in his language.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 7:52SPEAKER_01: And he says it twice.
- 7:54SPEAKER_01: Again, I want to make sure you understand if anybody preach a different gospel, Jesus plus something else, let that man be cursed.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: I get I get a little bit like a fearful thing to read when it's like, oh man, Paul's speaking to me right now.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 8:08SPEAKER_01: So one thing that it's happening here in the very beginning, he he established his apostleship, getting my gospel, and the gospel that you received from me comes from God.
- 8:19SPEAKER_01: Now you he goes, I am, I am, he said the word that he says, I am shocked that you have turned away so quickly.
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: Somebody else came and persuaded you with a different gospel.
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: So Paul is writing this letter to talk about false teaching.
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: That's the whole point of writing this letter.
- 8:38SPEAKER_01: So when Paul um is writing to them, we and when you're reading this book, you're gonna hear it's it's like each chapter talks pretty much kind of like about the same thing.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: Um, it's all about false doctrine.
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: Uh, and Paul is making and trying to get them to understand you cannot add anything to the gospel.
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: What you receive from me and I receive from God, don't let anybody bring confusion.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: And that happens today in our culture, right?
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: Oh, absolutely.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: You see people that are falling away, they come to believe in the truth of the gospel.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: Uh, but yet that's why it's so important that these that are listening right now are making this choice, because what we're doing is we're rooting ourselves in the word of God, in truth, not in our feelings, not in hearsay, not in what other people say.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: And it allows you to be established so that when doctrines come and things come that's not consistent, you'll be able to withstand that because you're rooted and grounded.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: And I think it's what Paul's doing, because this is the foundation of the gospel that he's given here, which is important to understand.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: Very, very important.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: This is how the gospel started, and that this is what he wants not only this church, but all the churches that he writes to.
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: He always talks and he goes on and he talks about his own, uh, how God you know saved him and how he received the gospel.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: So a little bit on the structure of uh the book, and I'm gonna go quickly on this is Galatians chapter 1, verse 1 through chapter 2, verse 21.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: It's how Paul finds the gospel.
- 10:07SPEAKER_01: Chapter 3 to from verse 1 to chapter 5, verse 12, it's Paul Principles.
- 10:14SPEAKER_01: So the law and grace.
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: That's something that you're gonna see him talk about often.
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: And I and I and I and I said uh earlier that the word law is mentioned 32 times.
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: So Paul is gonna talk a lot about this.
- 10:26SPEAKER_01: So, authorship of this book, who wrote this book?
- 10:28SPEAKER_01: It was Paul himself, Paul the Apostle.
- 10:31SPEAKER_01: And it's writing around 50, around the 50 AD, so after uh Jesus' uh death and ascension.
- 10:38SPEAKER_01: Um, so that's that's kind of like the time frame.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm gonna you just kind of hold there for just a moment and you can kind of talk get into that.
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: But I want to just revisit you, you mentioned something about Paul finding the gospel.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: One of the things I love that he did in chapter number one, and he does these early because he begins to explain how he found the gospel.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: Paul, throughout the book of Acts, throughout even a lot of his right, he's always revisiting his conversion.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: He's always revisiting how that he once was that.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: He violently, matter of fact, he says here uh in verse number 13 or uh verse number 13 of chapter one, how he followed the Jewish religion and violently pushed against the church.
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: And he thought he knew the way, but it was really he had a Damascus road of experience.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: But I love that, and what I just want to encourage people that your story is the greatest thing that you have.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: And when you have professed, whatever whatever you come from, whatever background, whatever your choices were, it's all of us went from dead to life.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: And Paul shares his story in a multiplicity of ways.
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: And I believe all of us need to have our long version that we can share in 20 minutes to somebody, and then those short versions in five minutes, and then those elevator speeches where you can just in 30 seconds to 60 seconds give somebody how your life has been changed.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: I just encourage you to think about that as, and I just that just came to me as you're talking about Paul.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: So, date of this gospel around 50 AD, we can find a story um on Acts chapter 13 through 14.
- 12:12SPEAKER_01: That is the first missionary journey of Paul.
- 12:14SPEAKER_01: That's where he kind of goes into this area for the first time with Paul and Barnabas.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: Um, Paul and Barnabas is sent by the Holy Spirit.
- 12:23SPEAKER_01: The church lays one hand on them, and they we talked about this in, I believe it was our second or third episode of this specific missionary journey.
- 12:31SPEAKER_01: They go into Antioch of Syria, and then they travel through Pasadena, uh, Antioch, um, Ecomonus, Lystra, and Derby.
- 12:41SPEAKER_01: All those cities are the southern part of the Roman providence of Galatia.
- 12:46SPEAKER_01: So that all of that happened in the first missionary journey.
- 12:50SPEAKER_01: Uh, so you can find it in Acts chapter 13 through 14.
- 12:53SPEAKER_01: And the cool thing about when you're reading the letters of Paul, you can always go to Acts and see when he was in this place, and now he is writing back uh to them.
- 13:04SPEAKER_01: Uh south of Galatia, that's the region.
- 13:07SPEAKER_01: Now, the purpose of the book, uh, as I said before, is to prove the authenticity authenticity authenticity?
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: I see Crystal back there.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: Well, here's the here's the thing.
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: I just want everybody to know that you gotta you gotta have a little bit of grace with uh with Christian and with me, because for both of us, the English language is our second language.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: And they're laughing at me, but it is it is true.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: His is because he comes from speaking Spanish in Puerto Rico and did not speak English till he was 17 or started trying to speak English to 17.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: For me, I grew up in Spiro, Oklahoma, which is a completely different language than the English language, too.
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: Uh, there are some parts of it that is similar, but it's still completely different.
- 13:53SPEAKER_01: So authenticity.
- 13:55SPEAKER_00: Yes, that's oh come on, I got it.
- 13:56SPEAKER_01: That's good, that's good.
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: Uh, of the gospel.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: So uh he's talking about to push back the legalism, to push back on the Judaizers who are trying to bring the old covenant of the Mosaic law.
- 14:08SPEAKER_01: Uh, he is riding against this uh false gospel and false doctrine, and he wants to show the superiority, superiority.
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: Did I say that right?
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: Superiority, yeah.
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: Of the um of the Abrahamic and the new covenant over the Mosaic law, over the Mosaic uh covenant.
- 14:29SPEAKER_01: So now he's saying we needed the sacrifices, we needed to offer all of those things until Jesus showed up.
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: But this is the promise that God gave us.
- 14:40SPEAKER_01: Now, from this point on, is the new covenant that we are under.
- 14:44SPEAKER_01: So this false teachers um are coming into to tell them about you can have Jesus, but you also have to have this.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: Now, the Gentiles that were the outsiders, now they are trying to make them Jews before they can follow Christ.
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: So it's a mess that Paul is dealing with, and he's talking about no, no, no.
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: These are the foundations of the gospel.
- 15:06SPEAKER_01: He writes about that.
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: So, with those, there's come some major themes and um he's significant uh things that he wants to lay out there very clear.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: And I'm gonna let you give those, but it's very important to understand this the major theological and practical themes of Galatians uh that are very important for discipleship, uh for understanding who we are in Christ.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: And these are so good.
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: So I want you to listen to these because these are central to our faith and who we are in Christ Jesus.
- 15:37SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: So again, we cannot read every single sentence and every area, but we're gonna give you kind of like the themes you're gonna be able to read this while you're reading um the book of Galatians.
- 15:48SPEAKER_01: So the first theme is uh key theme is justification by faith.
- 15:53SPEAKER_01: Now, this is a statement in 216.
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: It says a person is not justified by works of the law, but through faith in Jesus Christ.
- 16:02SPEAKER_01: We are justified by our faith in Christ, not by what I do.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: And the old law, the old covenant, the Judaizers, they took a lot of pride on what they did because they follow the law.
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: And Paul is making the statement you're not justified by what you can do, you're justified by what Christ did on the cross.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: With that, I've I've got friends of mine um that are practicing Jews to this day that are um and they really lean into being an Orthodox Jew, which is they the Old Testament uh obeying the 16, I mean, excuse me, 613 laws of the Old Testament.
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: And I'm just asking, how do you do it?
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: How can you and they admit that we can't.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: Uh the issue is they say we just gotta try, we gotta keep trying, we gotta keep trying, and that you hope that you know you have a whole lot more successes and that I kept that and did that than you do failures.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 16:59SPEAKER_00: In which I am so glad that I'm not gonna have to stand before God and base it up on that is that Jesus actually he's the one that took care of that.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: Another theme is freedom in Christ, um, how the gospel delivers believers from the law of condemnation.
- 17:15SPEAKER_01: So praise God for that.
- 17:17SPEAKER_01: Thank you, Jesus.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: Another theme is the role of the law, because um he made he makes sure that he people understand the law is good, the law serves its purpose, but we're not under that law anymore.
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: And I think that's something that sometimes when when people become Christians, they just want to forsake all the things the old testament talks about, and Paul makes it clear no, no, the law has its purpose, but it's not gonna save you, it you're only gonna be saved through Christ now.
- 17:44SPEAKER_01: Um, uh Christian identity and sonship, believers are adopted as children of God.
- 17:50SPEAKER_01: We see this in Galatians chapter 4, verse uh 5 through 7, and they understand the um they are hires.
- 17:59SPEAKER_01: Am I saying that right?
- 18:00SPEAKER_01: Hires, hires, heirs.
- 18:03SPEAKER_01: I knew I was saying it wrong.
- 18:04SPEAKER_01: That's okay, that's okay.
- 18:05SPEAKER_01: They are heirs um of the promise given to Abraham, not under uh the slave woman Hagar, and he talks about Hagar and Sarah in there.
- 18:16SPEAKER_01: Uh so and he just brings that back all the way to when God called Abraham, how we are his heirs.
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, um, so you see that in Galatians chapter uh four, verse 21 through 31, and then uh life in the spirit versus life in the flesh.
- 18:34SPEAKER_01: And at life in this in the flesh, he goes on and mentions a whole bunch of different ones, and then he talks about but living in the spirit, that's what he talks about love, joy, peace, uh, all those, all those things that um Paul talks about.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: So good.
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, when he talks about the works of the flesh, which all of us can read, he talks about you know their sexual morality, anger, greed, pride.
- 18:59SPEAKER_00: He makes a whole list there.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: And then he just leans into the spirit of God.
- 19:05SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: The fruit of the spirit, love and joy and peace and patience and kindness and goodness and faithfulness and gentleness and self-control.
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: And it's interesting how he says at the end of that, he says, Against such there is no law.
- 19:19SPEAKER_00: Matter of fact, we don't have to have laws put up anywhere in the world if the fruit of the spirit is being exercised.
- 19:26SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: You you you put up laws and rules because we're not doing those things.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 19:33SPEAKER_00: And so, and the human nature doesn't naturally lean into the fruit of the spirit because we're flesh.
- 19:39SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 19:39SPEAKER_00: That's why we need the spirit of God, spirit of Jesus, the Holy Spirit living inside of us so that we can bear fruit.
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: That's evidence of our life of repentance.
- 19:50SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 19:51SPEAKER_01: And we just uh, you know, I know by the time that you you're listening to this, the past weekend uh we spoke a message on all of these things.
- 19:59SPEAKER_01: So if you were not pressing, go back into our podcast for the North Church, the sermons, and listen to that sermon.
- 20:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 20:05SPEAKER_00: The title of it was The Building Blocks.
- 20:07SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: Okay, and the building blocks of what?
- 20:10SPEAKER_00: The um collection of talks is Build His Church.
- 20:13SPEAKER_00: So the building blocks for building his church are those nine things.
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: And I I want to thank you for helping write that script, prepare it for us, and then of course, uh, me and you and Pastor Hetty and uh Pastor Samson uh delivered that word, and I believe that it's been an encouragement for people.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so go listen to that if you have not.
- 20:35SPEAKER_00: So that's pretty much Galatians.
- 20:37SPEAKER_00: I know we covered that.
- 20:38SPEAKER_01: There's a lot in there that we didn't get to, but go go read it, go read it for yourself, use this to um help you understand and come come to life.
- 20:48SPEAKER_00: Okay, so now we're gonna dive into one of those books of the Bible that is it's kind of discouraging and but then also encouraging too.
- 20:58SPEAKER_00: And um I I've really have always enjoyed reading it because it's kind of fascinating.
- 21:04SPEAKER_00: Uh, but that is the book of Ecclesiastes.
- 21:06SPEAKER_00: So let's let's jump into it.
- 21:07SPEAKER_01: One thing that I kind of wanted to, I don't know if this happens to you.
- 21:10SPEAKER_01: When I hear people saying the Ecclesiastes is their favorite book, I'm like, I can I I can tell so much about you already just by saying that I'm like, you must be a pessimistic person.
- 21:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 21:21SPEAKER_00: So that's why I mentioned to me, it's fascinating.
- 21:23SPEAKER_00: It's it's kind of like uh but it but not necessarily an enjoyable book for me.
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: Yes, yes.
- 21:29SPEAKER_01: So there are uh so authorship on the book of Ecclesiastes.
- 21:33SPEAKER_01: Uh there is traditional views of it and like mother modern views of it.
- 21:38SPEAKER_01: So I grew up believing, and it's kind of what I still think that it was written by King Solomon.
- 21:44SPEAKER_01: There are some some people, some scholars who believe that it was King Solomon, others believe that it was someone who had that type of um model his life after King Solomon.
- 21:57SPEAKER_01: So there are two different views.
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: So the traditional view is the King.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Solomon.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Now um and in there you will hear it depends on the scripture, uh, the translation that you're reading.
- 22:06SPEAKER_01: It will say the word teacher or preacher um will refer to the person who is right uh reading it.
- 22:12SPEAKER_01: So the modern view, like I said, a belief that it is uh like someone who possessed that wisdom from Solomon.
- 22:21SPEAKER_01: Um, so date on when it was written, so somewhere around either 3 BC or 5 BC, which it was a long, long, long time ago.
- 22:31SPEAKER_01: But there is a ton of wisdom.
- 22:34SPEAKER_01: This book is part of the wisdom literature in the Bible.
- 22:37SPEAKER_01: Um, I don't know if you know this, but there are uh different types of literature in the Bible.
- 22:42SPEAKER_01: The book of Ecclesiastes is part of the wisdom uh literature.
- 22:46SPEAKER_01: Um so when it was written, it was written a long time ago, 5th to 3rd century BC.
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: Um, and the language it's Hebrew, uh, with some mix of Aramaic in it, too.
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: So that also helps us to know when in history was written because of the type of language that people were were using.
- 23:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's a very what what Pastor Christian just then said is so important to understand because uh that's the way you know historians, um, theologians have figured out time frames and stuff because if they were in Babylon, they're gonna be writing it differently.
- 23:22SPEAKER_00: And so you you got you got different time frames, it's just very important to lean into to understand uh and it it's revealed through uh the language that it was written.
- 23:31SPEAKER_01: Very, very importantly, you say that because it does help us understand.
- 23:35SPEAKER_01: But one thing I think it also does is like um I believe in education, I want to continue to get educated, my family to be educated.
- 23:43SPEAKER_01: But God uses what you know, He uses He used the skill of the writers to write his His books, and um it's it's it you can see through um when you read original texts and stuff like that, you will see uh what they were influenced.
- 23:59SPEAKER_01: So we're talking about Babylon.
- 24:00SPEAKER_01: This were people that they say that it was written in an Aramaic and it has a little bit of Hebrew or Hebrew and a little bit of Aramaic because they're writers, they they knew that language.
- 24:11SPEAKER_01: That was their first language.
- 24:13SPEAKER_01: Um, the New Testament is in Greek, so um it's just help us understand when things were were written.
- 24:19SPEAKER_01: So the audience is the people of Israel, so this book serves all of us, the the entire word of God uh serve us, but it was written in a specific time for a specific group of people, and these were the Israelites.
- 24:33SPEAKER_00: And I think I've heard Shannon, I've heard other people say this before, but my wife says this often is that the Bible is written, wasn't written to you, but it was written for you.
- 24:43SPEAKER_00: That's important to understand.
- 24:44SPEAKER_00: Because when you realize it's not written to you, then you realize, okay, I need to know the people that it was written to and what was going on this time, what's the background, what's you know, the communities like, what's culture like, what, and it gives you uh an understanding of the people that it's being written to.
- 25:01SPEAKER_00: But then everything in God's word is for us to learn and to grow.
- 25:07SPEAKER_01: So one thing that um to understand about the audience is that the audience were uh struggling with disappointment, with injustice.
- 25:15SPEAKER_01: Um, there is a lot of things that are happening into them, they were discontent.
- 25:19SPEAKER_01: So this book is written in a beautiful um way of wisdom.
- 25:24SPEAKER_01: I call it earlier like pessimistic because it's gonna talk about meaningless, meaningless, meaningless.
- 25:30SPEAKER_01: Everything is meaningless.
- 25:32SPEAKER_01: So the original Hebrew word actually doesn't translate to meaningless, it translates to vapor.
- 25:39SPEAKER_01: It's things that is just things that just disappear in a second.
- 25:43SPEAKER_01: So the author of of Ecclesiastes is gonna talk a lot about uh wisdom, it's gonna talk about work.
- 25:50SPEAKER_01: It's and it's like, well, you're gonna work so hard, but one day, guess what?
- 25:54SPEAKER_01: You're gonna die because life is a vapor.
- 25:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:57SPEAKER_01: So when I understood that, I'm like, okay, the author is trying to teach me something.
- 26:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, don't be so concerned about the things of this world because what you work for, by the time you get to enjoy it, you're gonna be too old.
- 26:10SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 26:10SPEAKER_01: And what you're gonna leave to someone, they might not even want it anymore.
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: So um, it talks about all of those things.
- 26:15SPEAKER_00: Oh, and that is so true.
- 26:16SPEAKER_00: That's so true.
- 26:17SPEAKER_00: How many times have I seen even just family members who you get these houses that are filled with stuff?
- 26:23SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 26:23SPEAKER_00: And you know, the grandma dies, somebody dies, and there may be just a few heirlooms that are left that they want that's a piece of jewelry or something.
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: But for the most part, it's like throw a match to it and burn it down because the next generation, next generation, don't really care for all that stuff.
- 26:41SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 26:42SPEAKER_00: And uh it's just a burden for them to have.
- 26:44SPEAKER_01: And what is the one of the purpose that it was written?
- 26:45SPEAKER_01: It says to expose how wisdom, pleasure, work, and wealth, though it's valuable, cannot provide lasting fulfillment.
- 26:54SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 26:55SPEAKER_01: That's the whole book of this book, of the whole purpose of this book.
- 26:58SPEAKER_01: So when you're reading this book, and I won't challenge you, maybe you already finished it this week, go back and now read it, understanding that what the author is trying to say is that all of these things, yes, they are valuable, but are never gonna fulfill you.
- 27:12SPEAKER_01: Um key themes is the Havel, is what I said earlier.
- 27:16SPEAKER_01: Is that that's the uh meet that what we translate to meaningless, it's repeated 40 times in the book.
- 27:22SPEAKER_01: So you're gonna see this word 40 times come up.
- 27:26SPEAKER_01: Um, and it's telling you that things are a vapor, they're temporary, and you cannot control them.
- 27:33SPEAKER_01: You cannot control life.
- 27:34SPEAKER_01: No matter how hard you study, you cannot control even wisdom.
- 27:38SPEAKER_01: One of the things that I that I when when I was reading it this week, that uh you can seek wisdom and all of it, but it will never, it will never give you um the sense of peace that you might be thinking that wisdom is going to give you.
- 27:52SPEAKER_00: I I keep leaning into on what he is getting at is that we have to just learn to lean into God and trust him with our life and be grateful for what we have and to be thankful for our little or our much.
- 28:07SPEAKER_00: But realize that everything we have comes from God.
- 28:10SPEAKER_00: It's a gift from God, and it's temporary, it's elusive, it's beyond our ability to control it.
- 28:16SPEAKER_00: And we just got to be able to just realize that hold our hands open and realizing that we cannot squeeze as much as we can, we cannot hang on to it.
- 28:24SPEAKER_00: It's like putting pouring water in my hand and squeezing it.
- 28:27SPEAKER_00: It's gonna disappear.
- 28:28SPEAKER_00: It's it's not.
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: It's there may my hand might be a little bit wet when I'm done, but I can't hang on to that water.
- 28:33SPEAKER_00: And then even what the wetness is going to dry up, it's gonna it's gonna evaporate.
- 28:37SPEAKER_01: It's it's really uh uh interesting seeing my daughter trying to do those things when we're brushing her teeth and we're teaching her to grab water so she can wash her mouth and she just can't figure it out how to do it, but it's it's a picture of like no matter how hard you tried, you cannot, you cannot do that.
- 28:54SPEAKER_01: So uh the theme of the the limits of wisdom, you can sick that, but it won't guarantee success, um, or even explain why bad things happen to good people or why good things happen to evil people.
- 29:09SPEAKER_01: He mentions this in the in the writing.
- 29:11SPEAKER_01: Uh, time and death, how life is cyclical, how you cannot stop that.
- 29:16SPEAKER_01: Uh, does it matter um how hard you work?
- 29:19SPEAKER_01: He gives the illustration of a mountain.
- 29:22SPEAKER_01: He said, You can work, work, work, but look at that mountain.
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: The mountain is gonna be there a hundred, two hundred years after you.
- 29:30SPEAKER_01: So it is very difficult to read for me because I feel like I'm a very positive person and I'm always looking at the good side of things, and it seems like this writer is it's not, he's not even trying.
- 29:43SPEAKER_01: But this is something that the original audience would really understand because they're facing discontentment, uh, they're facing a lot of like hardship.
- 29:52SPEAKER_00: So, you know, you he uses that everybody's time.
- 29:56SPEAKER_00: In fact, there's been songs written about this.
- 29:57SPEAKER_00: Is that he talks about there's a time for everything, he lists a bunch of things, and um, there's a time to do a lot of things in this life, and there's a time of death.
- 30:06SPEAKER_00: There's a time that we gotta all be and really that's we should be preparing for that moment every day, uh, with this idea of like, you know, I've got my birth date and I've got my death date, and that dash in between is how we should be living our lives in humility, not in pride, not with a sense of, oh, I achieved this, but a sense of gratitude and realizing that every day is is uh a gift from God and we should find joy in that.
- 30:31SPEAKER_00: In fact, he even emphasizes to eat, drink, and find joy and fulfillment uh in life because if if not, man, you live a frustrating, horrible life.
- 30:40SPEAKER_00: But you know, one of the things that when he wraps up, I want you to kind of lean into because to me, this is the he spends all this time, but then that last chapter and the last few verses, especially the last about two or three verses, were just powerful.
- 30:54SPEAKER_00: Can you talk to us about that?
- 30:55SPEAKER_01: So he concludes this beautiful writing, because it is beautiful.
- 31:00SPEAKER_01: Again, I'm a little bit sad that he's so negative, but it is a beautiful way of writing, and he talks about um kind of like what what what matters the most is to keep God's word and his commandments.
- 31:13SPEAKER_01: Chapter 12, verse 13, fear God and keep his commitments, for this is the whole duty of man.
- 31:20SPEAKER_01: So he said all of these things just to tell you, everything is meaningless.
- 31:25SPEAKER_01: The thing that really matters is that you keep the word of God and follow his commandments.
- 31:30SPEAKER_00: Love it.
- 31:32SPEAKER_00: Love it.
- 31:32SPEAKER_00: That's what we're about right here.
- 31:33SPEAKER_00: That's what we want to do.
- 31:34SPEAKER_00: It's what we're trying to give you, is uh our audience is and me, is just more and more of God's word because heaven and earth pass away, God's word remains.
- 31:42SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 31:43SPEAKER_00: The fire fadeth, God's word remains.
- 31:46SPEAKER_00: Jesus is the word of God.
- 31:47SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 31:48SPEAKER_00: I think remember that remembering that is that from Genesis to Revelation is that it all points to one person.
- 31:55SPEAKER_00: The story, it's a story that points to one person.
- 31:57SPEAKER_00: His name is Jesus, and Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
- 32:01SPEAKER_00: Everything else, fleeting, fading, fickle, it's hard, but Jesus remains.
- 32:07SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 32:07SPEAKER_00: And that's why he said in John 15, he said, Remain in me.
- 32:11SPEAKER_00: Yep, abide in me.
- 32:12SPEAKER_00: And if you do, you're gonna bear much fruit.
- 32:15SPEAKER_01: Yep, so good.
- 32:17SPEAKER_01: That's good.
- 32:19SPEAKER_00: So good.
- 32:20SPEAKER_00: All right, we've covered Ecclesiastes.
- 32:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 32:24SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 32:25SPEAKER_00: Now, let's dive into Song of Songs, or older, it's been more the modern's been changing, but the origin is Song of Solomon, which um again, you you've already kind of brought up Ecclesiastes being written by uh, you know, uh by Solomon, but we don't know for sure, and or it could be somebody with more that kind of that, but we do know this that uh it's kind of like like the Psalms.
- 32:52SPEAKER_00: We do know like 71, maybe 72 of the Psalms were written by David.
- 32:56SPEAKER_00: It just says David is the author of the Song of David.
- 32:59SPEAKER_00: But all of them, it's the spirit of David.
- 33:01SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 33:02SPEAKER_00: It's kind of that same uh probably people that learn from him, that heard stories about him, it was written down about him, and then you have all of these um other authors that begin to add to that over the years to make up.
- 33:17SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's so good.
- 33:19SPEAKER_00: So the the just the title of this book, The Song of Songs, is emphasizing that this is like the greatest song.
- 33:26SPEAKER_00: And it is really just a collection of poetry, it's a collection of it, it's not meant to have any real clear uh sequence through there.
- 33:37SPEAKER_00: It's like does have an introduction, does have somewhat of a conclusion, but everything is just like jumping around, moving back and forth.
- 33:43SPEAKER_00: And it's really a book that's uh really focused on the beauty and the passion and the covidential nature of love between man and woman within marriage.
- 33:59SPEAKER_00: And that's kind of what it's about.
- 34:01SPEAKER_00: And the spiritual purpose is to illustrate God's uh covenant love.
- 34:05SPEAKER_00: Um now, obviously, there's a lot to take in there.
- 34:08SPEAKER_00: We got to first take it for what it really is, uh, because I think even a lot of the more recent discoveries of this book has been really leaning into that a lot of the Jewish culture was spoke to poems about love between man and woman.
- 34:22SPEAKER_00: And you think that that it should, because you go back to the beginning of time, God what?
- 34:26SPEAKER_00: Made man.
- 34:26SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 34:27SPEAKER_00: And then he said, Oh, it's not good that man be alone.
- 34:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 34:30SPEAKER_00: And then he made woman.
- 34:32SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 34:32SPEAKER_00: And the beauty of that, and then also even if you if you go to the New Testament, obviously, Christ's love of his church exemplifies this love relationship.
- 34:44SPEAKER_00: And he even speaks to marriage in Ephesians chapter number five, uh, in regards to you know, our lives should reflect as husband and wife what Christ and the church uh gives us.
- 34:56SPEAKER_00: And then also it it's really, I think, more uh if you're a Jew, you're gonna lean into it's Yahweh's love for Israel.
- 35:03SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 35:03SPEAKER_00: And so anyway, you slice it, this is a love story, a powerful love story that is dramatic.
- 35:11SPEAKER_00: It is um it is up and down.
- 35:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 35:15SPEAKER_00: It's like they're embracing, loving each other.
- 35:17SPEAKER_00: Uh they're, you know, uh it's getting very steam.
- 35:20SPEAKER_00: Enjoying one another.
- 35:20SPEAKER_00: Absolutely, it's getting very steamy.
- 35:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 35:22SPEAKER_00: It's it's not it's not uh PG.
- 35:24SPEAKER_00: It kind of moves past PG and PG 13 to R-rated if you had uh actual uh imagery to that.
- 35:30SPEAKER_00: But it's it's it speaks to a commitment between two individuals.
- 35:38SPEAKER_00: The one thing that you know a lot of people struggled with is that did Solomon write this is because and if he did, maybe he was realizing what he was missing because he had hundreds of wives and concubines.
- 35:53SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 35:54SPEAKER_00: And he never grasped the real understanding of what it was to love.
- 35:59SPEAKER_00: Because even Jesus said in Matthew chapter uh 19 and also in the book of Mark chapter 10, he laid very clearly to people that are struggling, and they're polygamists that's talking to him.
- 36:10SPEAKER_00: They're asking about, can we divorce for any reason?
- 36:12SPEAKER_00: He said, Don't you realize that from the beginning God made them male and female, and the two will become one.
- 36:18SPEAKER_00: Will become one.
- 36:20SPEAKER_00: He's making very clear.
- 36:21SPEAKER_00: And so I think that the Song of Songs really leans into yes, our love relationship with God, and it speaks to that, but also speaks to husband and wife, and when it's done right, the beauty that it could be uh for a world that needs to see it.
- 36:40SPEAKER_00: And you hey, that this past weekend, this is being released several weeks later, but this past weekend when I was speaking, I asked people to raise their hand if you've been impacted by divorce.
- 36:50SPEAKER_00: Every single experience, there was well over 70% of the people that raise their hand.
- 36:55SPEAKER_00: Now, granted, and some people don't raise their hand, so those numbers are even higher than that.
- 36:59SPEAKER_00: And what do people need today?
- 37:02SPEAKER_00: They need to see loved fleshed out in a marriage.
- 37:06SPEAKER_00: They kids need to see that, they need to feel that.
- 37:08SPEAKER_00: And then, but then uh also if we do it right under Christ, it points people to Jesus Christ.
- 37:15SPEAKER_00: It's good.
- 37:16SPEAKER_00: Good.
- 37:17SPEAKER_00: Now there's several key themes uh to this and um book, and it's the beauty of human love.
- 37:25SPEAKER_00: Okay, um sexual love as being pure and holy within marriage, covenant and commitment.
- 37:32SPEAKER_01: Can I say something about you you you mentioned that sexual um love is pure and holy within marriage?
- 37:40SPEAKER_01: I did not wait until marriage to have sex, and it cost me the joy of sex with my wife when I got married in her honeymoon.
- 37:49SPEAKER_01: I remember that because of my past experience, it actually damaged the beauty that I was supposed to experience with my wife.
- 37:57SPEAKER_01: And some people think, well, sex is just an act.
- 38:00SPEAKER_01: No, it's not, and not, and the book talks about the beauty of that.
- 38:05SPEAKER_01: So if you're listening and you're dating, build those boundaries.
- 38:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, Christian, I appreciate you saying that because I see you tearing up right now because it's something that's very real.
- 38:15SPEAKER_00: Not now here, hear me.
- 38:17SPEAKER_00: If you're if you're listening to this and you say, Oh, I can I'm I'm there with Christian, um and and I I actually waited till I got married, but that doesn't mean I was completely pure at heart.
- 38:29SPEAKER_00: I I did some things that I regret that I look back, but here's here's the thing the devil wants to hold that over you as condemnation.
- 38:38SPEAKER_00: For you that have made choices outside of God's plan.
- 38:41SPEAKER_00: Let me tell you something, God's grace and goodness will walk you through that, just like it has with Christian to help Hilm and Natalie to achieve what God wants is that pure, beautiful love in marriage.
- 38:55SPEAKER_00: But let me also say, if you have made those choices, don't walk that way anymore.
- 39:00SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 39:00SPEAKER_00: And then if you haven't, choose to walk after God's way of doing things so that you don't have to carry that cloud that the devil will begin to use against you.
- 39:09SPEAKER_00: And you can experience um freedom from those types of attacks of the enemy.
- 39:15SPEAKER_02: Good.
- 39:16SPEAKER_00: Uh also um that covenant commitment, the mutual belonging, um, exclusiveness, intimacy with God, it speaks to, uh, this pursuit of God, this passion for God.
- 39:28SPEAKER_00: And I I love to read it not only from the lens of looking at it in my marriage between me and Shannon, but also my marriage with God in my pursuit of Him.
- 39:39SPEAKER_00: And it speaks to the power of love.
- 39:41SPEAKER_00: I love in chapter 8 and verse 6 and 7, it says, Love is as strong as death.
- 39:48SPEAKER_00: Many waters cannot quench love.
- 39:51SPEAKER_00: It's like you keep dumping, it cannot stop the love.
- 39:55SPEAKER_00: True love reflects divine strength, permanence, and passion.
- 40:01SPEAKER_00: It speaks to an enduring effect in people's lives.
- 40:05SPEAKER_00: And I just really encourage people to dive into uh Song of Solomon and think about it, meditate on it.
- 40:12SPEAKER_00: And I I wanted to share just a few things uh in regards to what I've written uh that I feel like hopefully will encourage you.
- 40:20SPEAKER_00: Um so this was written a couple of years ago.
- 40:25SPEAKER_00: Um Song of Solomon or Song of Songs, chapter one, verse two.
- 40:29SPEAKER_00: It just says, Kiss me and kiss me again for your love is sweeter than wine.
- 40:37SPEAKER_00: If you've ever experienced that love, that relationship, you've you can relate to that.
- 40:43SPEAKER_00: Kiss me, kiss me again.
- 40:44SPEAKER_00: It's just you don't stop.
- 40:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, don't don't stop.
- 40:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I want more of this.
- 40:49SPEAKER_00: And I I wrote down just in my personal journal journal, Kiss Me Again.
- 40:53SPEAKER_00: And I wrote, the passion between husband and wife as God designed it is a beautiful thing.
- 41:00SPEAKER_00: Desire for each other that seeks to serve, honor, respect, and love one another bleeds over into joyful romance.
- 41:11SPEAKER_00: The taste of such relationship begs for more.
- 41:16SPEAKER_00: Such a marriage longs to be together and share an intimacy.
- 41:21SPEAKER_00: It is a fire fueled by the attention to each other's needs, to a love that never grows cold.
- 41:32SPEAKER_00: And for me, that's just a way of expressing what God's doing inside of me.
- 41:36SPEAKER_00: So I'm writing that.
- 41:37SPEAKER_00: And then in verse number three, it says, How pleasing is your fragrance?
- 41:44SPEAKER_00: Your name is like the spreading of fragrance of scented oils.
- 41:49SPEAKER_00: No wonder all the young women love you.
- 41:51SPEAKER_00: And I wrote this right here because I wrote your name.
- 41:54SPEAKER_00: I took that thought from it.
- 41:56SPEAKER_00: Says, Your name is like your name.
- 41:58SPEAKER_00: Has someone's name ever captured your heart?
- 42:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 42:04SPEAKER_00: Your mind and emotions to the degree that you continually think about them, maybe it's hard to focus on anything else because of your thoughts about them.
- 42:14SPEAKER_00: Well, this is often the case in our attraction toward others we call love.
- 42:21SPEAKER_00: Even more when we should be consumed by the name of Jesus.
- 42:27SPEAKER_00: Our thoughts, passions, and emotions should be upon him more than any other.
- 42:45SPEAKER_00: He loved us first, him, who is the definition of love.
- 42:49SPEAKER_00: It is our opportunity, privilege, and responsibility to love him in return.
- 42:54SPEAKER_00: Good.
