Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: And we're glad to have a brand new week of
- 0:01Speaker 1: the program with you here on sports Radio AM thirteen
- 0:05Speaker 1: under the Zone. My name is Craig Way. I do
- 0:06Speaker 1: thank you very much for joining us. Glad to have
- 0:09Speaker 1: you with us for hour number one of our three
- 0:13Speaker 1: hour meeting every day Monday through Friday from two pm
- 0:17Speaker 1: to five pm. I say we because we includes the
- 0:19Speaker 1: producer of this program. He's Cameron D.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Parker.
- 0:22Speaker 1: The D on the birth certificate stands for Dallas as
- 0:25Speaker 1: in his prey favorite pro football team that he has
- 0:28Speaker 1: pledged not to watch this season. So we didn't watch
- 0:31Speaker 1: them yesterday because they didn't play yesterday.
- 0:33Speaker 2: That made it very easy.
- 0:34Speaker 1: We were able to just settle back in and watch some
- 0:37Speaker 1: NFL and not worry about having to change the channel
- 0:39Speaker 1: if the Cowboys were on.
- 0:41Speaker 3: I actually got to be out of F one last,
- 0:45Speaker 3: didn't you. But my dad did have the red zone
- 0:48Speaker 3: pulled up at F one, so I got to enjoy that. Actually,
- 0:51Speaker 3: he said to me on Sunday, goes, so, who are
- 0:53Speaker 3: the Cowboys losing to today? And I was like, don't worry, Dad,
- 0:56Speaker 3: They're off this week bye week. Now did they win
- 0:59Speaker 3: the bye week?
- 0:59Speaker 2: We don't know. Who knows remains to be seen.
- 1:02Speaker 1: I guess we'll find out when they go to the
- 1:04Speaker 1: go to play the forty nine Ers next.
- 1:05Speaker 3: Yeah, must win game for both teams, it feels like,
- 1:07Speaker 3: especially after I went out in the San Francisco against
- 1:10Speaker 3: Kansas City yesterday.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Yeah. Absolutely so.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Your dad sounds equally disgusted with the team that he
- 1:17Speaker 1: named you after.
- 1:18Speaker 3: I know, is is any Cowboys fan not disgusted to
- 1:21Speaker 3: what's happening to this franchise right now? Hey, Dak Prescott
- 1:25Speaker 3: got married during the bye week. Good good for him,
- 1:27Speaker 3: find some happiness hopefully.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Yeah, speaking of happiness or lack thereof, obviously there's a
- 1:36Speaker 1: relative absence of that coming out of the game Saturday
- 1:40Speaker 1: night at dk R Texas Memorial Stadium with the Long
- 1:43Speaker 1: Horns falling to the Georgia Bulldogs thirty to fifteen. We
- 1:45Speaker 1: have a lot to get into about that, obviously. This
- 1:50Speaker 1: is a Long Horns Monday edition of the program, and
- 1:53Speaker 1: what Longhorns.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Monday includes is, but is not limited to, is.
- 2:01Speaker 1: The broadcast the live broadcast of Sea of Steve Sarkisian's
- 2:06Speaker 1: weekly news conference at eleven thirty on Monday mornings. We
- 2:09Speaker 1: brought it to you live this morning here on the
- 2:11Speaker 1: Zone at eleven thirty this morning, we begin our coverage
- 2:15Speaker 1: at eleven am. My cardbaal Harge joins me and we
- 2:19Speaker 1: begin our coverage at eleven and of course Sark goes
- 2:23Speaker 1: to the mic at eleven thirty, and then we bring
- 2:25Speaker 1: you the news conference from eleven thirty to noon. Now,
- 2:27Speaker 1: we realize not everybody can hear it then as it
- 2:30Speaker 1: airs live. That's why what we do with this program
- 2:34Speaker 1: is to bring it back to you in sound bite form.
- 2:37Speaker 1: You'll hear every answer to every question that Sarks.
- 2:40Speaker 2: So you just won't hear it in its long form
- 2:42Speaker 2: where let's.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Go over here, Cedric blah blah blah and the question.
- 2:46Speaker 1: We'll set it up for you and tell you what
- 2:47Speaker 1: the question is, and then you'll hear everyone of Sarks
- 2:50Speaker 1: answers to these questions. So we'll have that, and I'll
- 2:54Speaker 1: look back at the loss to Georgia, and I'll look
- 2:55Speaker 1: ahead to getting ready for the Vanderbilt Commodores, so that's
- 2:59Speaker 1: coming up. We'll have responses from Sark in all three
- 3:02Speaker 1: hours of the program this afternoon. Also this hour of Inconceivable,
- 3:07Speaker 1: we take a look at some of the bizarre and
- 3:09Speaker 1: weird nature of stories. It's a strange headlines today, some
- 3:13Speaker 1: headlines that by themselves would stand the test of time.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Like for example, there used to be a service called
- 3:26Speaker 1: the lower Case I think it was, and it was
- 3:28Speaker 1: and it was actual newspaper headlines that the headline writer
- 3:32Speaker 1: probably wishes that he or she had not written later
- 3:37Speaker 1: after it appeared in print. For example, there used to
- 3:40Speaker 1: be a really good marathon runner for years. His name
- 3:43Speaker 1: was Craig Virgin. That was that was his name, and
- 3:46Speaker 1: the headline when he had committed to run in a
- 3:48Speaker 1: certain race was Virgin to provide weekend excitement. So there
- 3:54Speaker 1: was there was some of that, but we do have it.
- 3:58Speaker 1: It was a couple of bizarre headl so we'll have
- 4:01Speaker 1: we'll have that.
- 4:02Speaker 3: I thought you were going with the bizarre headlines from
- 4:04Speaker 3: the Athletic talking about start creating controvert quarterback controversy.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Would this it now?
- 4:10Speaker 1: No?
- 4:10Speaker 3: Did the Athletic really really have got an email first
- 4:13Speaker 3: thing this morning? And there was a few other people
- 4:15Speaker 3: also on social media saying the same thingsh I think
- 4:20Speaker 3: just trying to get likes her people.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Yeah, right, there were people that were that were talking
- 4:24Speaker 1: about that on during the game on Saturday.
- 4:26Speaker 2: I can't believe he's doing that. What's he doing? It's
- 4:27Speaker 2: hoped it up.
- 4:29Speaker 1: The man has control of his quarterback room and his
- 4:32Speaker 1: football team, his locker room as well. So we're going
- 4:36Speaker 1: to hear Sark talk about that coming up in the
- 4:39Speaker 1: press conference.
- 4:40Speaker 2: But we do have inconceivable.
- 4:43Speaker 1: We also will take a look at the weekend around
- 4:46Speaker 1: the National Football League. Anything just other than the way
- 4:50Speaker 1: that the Chiefs dispatched the forty nine ers, was there
- 4:54Speaker 1: anything that really just struck you?
- 4:57Speaker 3: It might be just recency buy, but what Pittsburgh did
- 5:01Speaker 3: to the Jets last night, Yeah, I thought DeVante Adam
- 5:05Speaker 3: was going to save the offense. Craig by the way,
- 5:08Speaker 3: I think they're on the same exact pace in terms
- 5:11Speaker 3: of points scored through a week eight as they were
- 5:14Speaker 3: last season with Sack Wilson as their quarterback. And I
- 5:17Speaker 3: think they've only cracked twenty points once this season. That's
- 5:22Speaker 3: what Aaron Rodgers and Breese Hall and Garrett Wilson and
- 5:27Speaker 3: now DeVante Adams. So we'll see a team that I
- 5:30Speaker 3: thought was going to be a playoff team now two
- 5:33Speaker 3: and five.
- 5:35Speaker 1: I had somebody text me and said there was a
- 5:39Speaker 1: I haven't seen the highlight and for a very good
- 5:41Speaker 1: reason that which Hawk's plained in a minute, that Garrett
- 5:44Speaker 1: Wilson had a ball bounce off of his what was
- 5:47Speaker 1: his figh?
- 5:48Speaker 3: Oh, I didn't see that and got picked off. Didn't
- 5:50Speaker 3: see that as one of that a ricochet that got
- 5:53Speaker 3: picked off. So it was that would sum up the
- 5:55Speaker 3: Jets season. Yeah, that's what That's what somebody said. It
- 5:57Speaker 3: looked like that, and that was. In fact, I'll say
- 6:02Speaker 3: exactly what it was.
- 6:05Speaker 2: It was.
- 6:09Speaker 1: I just want to want to make sure I've got
- 6:11Speaker 1: this right because it was a good description of it.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Garrett Wilson just had the worst play I've ever seen
- 6:17Speaker 1: from him. The ball hit his chest and got picked
- 6:20Speaker 1: even worse. Yeah, So firing Robert Solid did not change anything, it.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Appears apparently not, at least not yet anyway. So there's that.
- 6:31Speaker 1: We now have a World Series matchup. Major League Baseball
- 6:35Speaker 1: is down to two teams and it's two of the
- 6:38Speaker 1: most tory franchises in history. It's the most off and
- 6:44Speaker 1: played World Series in history. For the twelfth time in
- 6:50Speaker 1: baseball history, the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles
- 6:53Speaker 1: Dodgers are going to meet in the World Series. They
- 6:57Speaker 1: have met eleven prior times the Yankees and one on
- 7:00Speaker 1: eight of the eleven. However, I should point out this
- 7:02Speaker 1: sounds almost like an Ou fan when you mentioned the
- 7:04Speaker 1: Texas overall record, and they go well in the last
- 7:07Speaker 1: ten years, in the last twenty when they do that.
- 7:10Speaker 1: The Yankees have the overall edge eight series wins to
- 7:15Speaker 1: three against the Dodgers, but they've split the last four
- 7:20Speaker 1: going back to nineteen siightes and and a good demarcation
- 7:23Speaker 1: is since the team moved from Brooklyn to Los Angeles
- 7:26Speaker 1: in nineteen fifty eight, they've split the last four, the
- 7:29Speaker 1: Dodgers winning in sixty three, the Yankees in seventy seven
- 7:32Speaker 1: to seventy eight, the Dodgers winning the last time they
- 7:34Speaker 1: met nineteen eighty one. That's the last time they've met,
- 7:37Speaker 1: so anyway, Gene Watson, our resident baseball insider, who did
- 7:45Speaker 1: call this matchup after we allowed him to reset, because
- 7:49Speaker 1: remember originally he said it was going to be the
- 7:50Speaker 1: Padres and Guardians, and then after the Padres got knocked
- 7:54Speaker 1: out by the Dodgers, allowed him waffle space and told
- 7:57Speaker 1: him he could re sit. So he said, okay, I'm
- 7:58Speaker 1: going with the Dodgers and I said, to your sticking
- 8:00Speaker 1: with the Guardians, and he said, no, I'm not.
- 8:03Speaker 2: I'm I'm switching to the Yankees.
- 8:05Speaker 1: So he ended up calling that correctly, that the Yankees
- 8:09Speaker 1: would beat the Guardians and that the Dodgers would beat
- 8:11Speaker 1: the Mets.
- 8:11Speaker 2: And so it's Los Angeles and New York.
- 8:13Speaker 1: But we'll get his thoughts on this upcoming match of
- 8:16Speaker 1: the World Series. Does not begin until Friday, and it
- 8:18Speaker 1: will at Dodgers Stadium. I think I speak for all
- 8:20Speaker 1: of Americas, sing Correig. We were all rooting for the
- 8:22Speaker 1: Dodgers in this World Series. Really, Yeah, I don't think
- 8:26Speaker 1: anyone likes the Yankees. I know a lot of people
- 8:28Speaker 1: who hate the Dodgers, but but might hate the Yankees
- 8:30Speaker 1: more even more.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Yeah, So to some people, you know, that's the old
- 8:34Speaker 1: thing about saying where they they when they wish to say,
- 8:37Speaker 1: who do you?
- 8:37Speaker 2: Who? Do you want to win? What I want to
- 8:39Speaker 2: happen is a meteor to strike either stadium.
- 8:42Speaker 1: That's that's that's what That's what some people say. I
- 8:47Speaker 1: I got a lot of Facebook react last night because
- 8:53Speaker 1: I was in Los Angeles last night. Lynda and I
- 8:56Speaker 1: flew out yesterday morning. We landed The first thing we did,
- 9:00Speaker 1: we went to Randy's Donuts to get a donut. You know,
- 9:02Speaker 1: the giant horns of great donuts. So we went to
- 9:05Speaker 1: Randy's Donut to get a donort, and then we were
- 9:07Speaker 1: doing some driving around looking. When it came lunchtime, we
- 9:09Speaker 1: went to Mel's Drive In. This trip was not all
- 9:12Speaker 1: about eating and food, but we did go to Mel's
- 9:14Speaker 1: Drive in. If you if you, if Mel's Drive In
- 9:18Speaker 1: sounds familiar, It's an iconic drive in restaurant. It opened
- 9:23Speaker 1: in nineteen forty seven, best known for being the drive
- 9:26Speaker 1: in in American Graffiti, the movie American Graffiti. And there's
- 9:31Speaker 1: big wall mural photos of George Lucas in there because
- 9:34Speaker 1: he directed it, and a young George Lucas before his
- 9:38Speaker 1: hair turned gray, and there's there's big pictures.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Anyway, I put it.
- 9:41Speaker 1: I put it on the Facebook poach that I had there,
- 9:45Speaker 1: so we ate there, had lunch there. But then, in
- 9:49Speaker 1: a move that really surprised a lot of folks, folks
- 9:52Speaker 1: thought that I had gone to La to see Game
- 9:53Speaker 1: six of Dodgers Mets, or at the very least would
- 9:58Speaker 1: have been out there to see my favorite pro football team,
- 10:01Speaker 1: the Rams play the Raiders now, and I've explained this
- 10:03Speaker 1: before on the air when folks have asked me why
- 10:05Speaker 1: do you like those two teams, it's for completely unrelated reasons,
- 10:08Speaker 1: has nothing to do with Los Angeles. In fact, normally
- 10:11Speaker 1: I'm not a big fan of LA but Dodgers. When
- 10:15Speaker 1: I was a kid, little kid, my dad was a
- 10:17Speaker 1: Yankees fan. He went to the nineteen fifty two and
- 10:20Speaker 1: fifty three World Series when he was stationed the Army
- 10:22Speaker 1: in New York, and used to tell me stories about
- 10:25Speaker 1: the Yankees and Dodgers meeting in the World Series. My
- 10:27Speaker 1: favorite color at the time was like blue, like a
- 10:30Speaker 1: Royal blue or Dodger blue. First package of baseball cards
- 10:33Speaker 1: I opened up, Bill Russell, the Dodger shortstop, was there,
- 10:36Speaker 1: and when I wrote off to the Major League teams,
- 10:37Speaker 1: the Dodgers were the ones to answer. I got this
- 10:40Speaker 1: big packet full of stuff in an autograph photo from
- 10:42Speaker 1: Willie Davis.
- 10:43Speaker 2: So I was stuck on that similar thing with the Rams.
- 10:46Speaker 1: Around the same time, when I was eight nine years old,
- 10:49Speaker 1: we would write letters off to the NFL teams. I'd
- 10:52Speaker 1: try to get autograph photos, and I wrote to three
- 10:54Speaker 1: or four teams.
- 10:55Speaker 2: The only one who responded to the Rams.
- 10:57Speaker 1: I got this big eight by ten black and white
- 10:59Speaker 1: glossy of Roman Gabriel, the quarterback and has had a
- 11:01Speaker 1: champ never quits Roman Gabel. It's probably somebody from the
- 11:05Speaker 1: you know, promotion staff that signed it. But that's okay.
- 11:08Speaker 1: So I was hooked on the Rams ever since. So
- 11:11Speaker 1: it had really had nothing to do with the city
- 11:12Speaker 1: of Los Angeles. But I was out in LA and
- 11:15Speaker 1: I didn't see either the Rams against the Raiders, although
- 11:20Speaker 1: we listened to most of it driving around in the car.
- 11:23Speaker 1: You talk about burnt toast versus stale bread. I mean,
- 11:25Speaker 1: you talk about two teams that are just floundering. The
- 11:28Speaker 1: Dodger the Rams found a way to win the game.
- 11:31Speaker 1: They did twenty to fifteen, but it was it was
- 11:34Speaker 1: it was kind of an ugly game. They're two and
- 11:37Speaker 1: four and the Raiders two and five, I think, and
- 11:41Speaker 1: the Dodgers. The reason I didn't go, yeah, I would
- 11:46Speaker 1: have had to find a way to get tickets and
- 11:48Speaker 1: all that kind of stuff. But more importantly, I had
- 11:52Speaker 1: planned a trip a few months ago as a surprise
- 11:55Speaker 1: for my wife, Linda, And this was before the SEC
- 12:00Speaker 1: teach schedule.
- 12:00Speaker 2: Came out, Before we knew it was going to go
- 12:02Speaker 2: go down.
- 12:04Speaker 1: One of her all time musical heroes in her life
- 12:07Speaker 1: has been Joni Mitchell, the great Canadian songstress Joni Mitchell,
- 12:13Speaker 1: and Joni Mitchell's eighty one now does very few shows.
- 12:18Speaker 1: She'd had some real serious health issues back a few
- 12:21Speaker 1: months ago, but she had these two shows at the
- 12:24Speaker 1: Hollywood Bowl one Saturday, one Sunday, and I thought, that's
- 12:30Speaker 1: going to work.
- 12:31Speaker 2: We're gonna do it.
- 12:31Speaker 1: So I ended up getting tickets, and of course we
- 12:33Speaker 1: see the SEC schedule and it was going to be
- 12:35Speaker 1: after the Georgia game, but we flew out early yesterday morning.
- 12:38Speaker 1: We had a fabulous time at the show. I'll tell
- 12:40Speaker 1: you more about the show a little bit later on.
- 12:42Speaker 1: I've had some people ask me for a concert review.
- 12:44Speaker 1: I'll tell you a little bit more about it later on.
- 12:47Speaker 1: And then we raced back to Lax. We were listening
- 12:51Speaker 1: to the Dodger postgame show after they won the National
- 12:53Speaker 1: League Championship Series, and I did have it during intermission.
- 12:57Speaker 1: It was in the ninth inning, so we watched the
- 12:58Speaker 1: ninth inning home and then we flew home on a
- 13:01Speaker 1: red eye, landed about eight twenty this morning, got the
- 13:05Speaker 1: car straight over to campus and there we are jumping
- 13:09Speaker 1: in with the Monday news conference. So anyway, I'll tell
- 13:11Speaker 1: you more about the concert a little bit later on,
- 13:13Speaker 1: but up next we're going to hear from Longhorn's head coach,
- 13:15Speaker 1: Steve Sarkisian, And we continue here on sports Radio AM
- 13:18Speaker 1: thirteen under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
