- 0:41Hello. So what we've been doing this,
- 0:45I've just been someone's just shared a link with me about
- 0:49possible to new Doctor Who animation.
- 0:51I've just been told the same at that.
- 0:58Yeah perfect I'll bet it's been a rumor floating around that an
- 1:04episode of the Smugglers had been found.
- 1:09So I mean, I'm I don't know, but maybe tight this has been going
- 1:12around for quite a while that something to do with the smoke
- 1:14has been found. So maybe that's why it's been
- 1:16chose to be an animated and we might City Jamaica and of all
- 1:20his glory. I just happen to have some
- 1:22sketches here. I've been with his top off that
- 1:24they can use Smugglers, animation, so need anything.
- 1:30And a colorized unearthly child which I know they were talking
- 1:33about doing for the 60th though the 50th.
- 1:36So it kind of makes sense. I did.
- 1:40I'm a bit on the fence with colorization.
- 1:42Like I do think it's a good idea the certain stories but to be
- 1:46honest, I don't lie, child and things like that, don't really
- 1:49do it for me. I don't like was the favor of
- 1:52black and white and some other color stories almost wanna make
- 1:55a ones, turn a colored like, you know, if you see like Like color
- 2:01photos from the war games and the sets are all quite bright.
- 2:04And I'm like, colorized that give me a colorized version of
- 2:06that. I want to see what it looks like
- 2:07but unearthly child, it's like It's the Tardis which is
- 2:12basically black and white. It's some caves which are
- 2:15basically black and white and just as a landscape.
- 2:19Yeah, I mean, I say that and I will buy it on every version
- 2:23that they release abilities on another by all those animations
- 2:26as well by on exactly this all over again.
- 2:29Yeah. And if it's shit I will still
- 2:30watch it several times again and again and again why I believe I
- 2:34had fun doing the commentary on door. - did you try to gather
- 2:38the Skinner professors are off and we Try to unpeel him
- 2:41psychologically to see how he possibly got to this state.
- 2:44We're just started. He had a terrorizing mother, you
- 2:47know. It must have been a must be
- 2:49trying to impress her ever since the creation of the Earth is the
- 2:52only way I was going to do it. It was fun.
- 2:56Yeah, I do love that story. It's so much fun.
- 3:00Like, I know it's not very good but it is crazy but a lot of
- 3:05doctor is so yeah. Yeah straight up I mean crazy.
- 3:10But I've always loved the Smugglers.
- 3:11So the idea of seeing that in any formats that may happen
- 3:16would be very exciting. I just thinking just do the
- 3:20Savages. I think the Savages would be to
- 3:23read it. You know, who would think more
- 3:25of it? I think this this witness
- 3:27statement of why I kept everybody goes all you know
- 3:29William Hartmann wasn't well towards the end and stuff like
- 3:32that but in both the Savages and in the Smugglers, you listen to
- 3:36those in your like he is fine form.
- 3:40Knows what they're up to the elders.
- 3:42Yeah. Your monstrous experiments.
- 3:47That's great. Yes.
- 3:49So I kind of by I don't buy that thing that he was, you know, not
- 3:54very well towards the end and that affected at all this
- 3:57performance. I think it was just hit and miss
- 3:59from week to week. Really the more I watch on all
- 4:02the more valuable I think he was to the show and the more
- 4:08personality I see that he brings to it.
- 4:11All right? I'm a massive fan of Davis and
- 4:14stocks, are I like him quite a bit in 21.
- 4:17Venus first thing, I'm a bit hit and miss because I do think it's
- 4:20an incredible sort of naturalistic performers.
- 4:22I don't think the doctor should ever quite be realistic and then
- 4:28contrast hard, and I was just putting in so many ticks and
- 4:30quirks and he's trying to like, you know, he's trying to rip
- 4:34your attention from everything else and succeeding all this
- 4:36not, you know, like he is Like he is this Mercurial wizard
- 4:42grandfather. Crotchety like each.
- 4:45It's all he's almost every version of the doctor we ever
- 4:47see after that, but from moment to moment rather than like it's
- 4:51all there in his performance almost.
- 4:53And from day one, it's fantastic anything.
- 4:56And I don't really think he drops the ball over.
- 4:58I hope they rhyme out a lot, but gun fires, he's prettier than
- 5:02the gun. He's absolutely on fire war.
- 5:04Machines is fantastic in and, you know, the only story
- 5:08realistically, right? Going to go perhaps.
- 5:10He's not on point. It's the massacre because
- 5:13there's no difference between the performance of the Abbot,
- 5:16and the doctor, and you're like, what, why did he make that
- 5:20choice? And also what's the point in the
- 5:22doppelganger? Yeah, that's when it doesn't
- 5:24really go anywhere, but then that speech he gives in episode
- 5:284. Yeah.
- 5:29It's probably his best acting mobile industry.
- 5:32You know exactly what except for the Sumner seen in the Romans.
- 5:36Of course, yeah. Wait, he's waving that This Vice
- 5:42both owners inductor. That's what we need.
- 5:44Hmm. Therefore it will Rusty going to
- 5:47come by. That's good.
- 5:48Chance that I think it's the, what is so great.
- 5:51This conversation, I'm going to add this to the episode and I'm
- 5:53just going to start it somewhere here and then we'll count in
- 5:56later. Wonderful.
- 5:58And but are you ready for six? I am ready for six.
- 6:02I'm ready for flash point, whatever.
- 6:04The flashy point, maybe. Well, I shall very quickly, say,
- 6:07then about three minutes. Into this episode.
- 6:10Now, welcome back to master the Doctor Who come true podcast
- 6:16major. Thought you didn't race.
- 6:19Yes, here I am still here about to enter into the final moments
- 6:23of the Daleks invasion of earth laughs.
- 6:25You should press play, but I do have a question from our raw
- 6:29fish. Just asked me downstairs.
- 6:30He's asked me to ask you a question, so counters in I'll
- 6:33ask. Okay, shall we do it in five?
- 6:36Four, three, two, one, Often carried out in loves a countdown
- 6:44clock account down the name, who doesn't is the best way to
- 6:47literally hit climax. You know, you're going to get
- 6:50there. It's like, once we hit one, we
- 6:52notice the end of the story. I'll try that.
- 6:55You know, next time I Mentor the climax 10/7 up.
- 6:59Not only made it to seven. Sorry.
- 7:02No the question was oh man I love that Batman angle that sort
- 7:06of squiffy angle. Yeah.
- 7:08Oh legs It's so cool. So cool.
- 7:12And and the model works not bad. I have a look at that although
- 7:15models. Is it?
- 7:18I think you do the yeah. Sorry.
- 7:21I see the work of the bomb. Oh look.
- 7:24There's a little muddled darling with his that that little more.
- 7:29It wasn't there last episode so that whether he remounted, if
- 7:32they figure in that little model darling, you just leave it.
- 7:35I got one right here. Look beautiful.
- 7:37Absolutely. He hasn't got a source that I do
- 7:39have the bank. Then, the question was, this
- 7:42was, it's Susan. Too young to stroke.
- 7:48Mary have a romance indeed, isn't she?
- 7:53I mean, she's 15 apparently in the earth years, or that's what
- 7:58she said, she was on the on planet Earth, but she could be
- 8:02200. So, there's a potential.
- 8:06But he's with a very old woman, actually.
- 8:09I think it's changing attitudes and Changing Times.
- 8:12People got married, very young, and got into a relationship
- 8:14with, was their only relationship very young back.
- 8:17Can the day, but now those hint never had of her being liked.
- 8:24Sexually active, isn't it? Like that's not really but
- 8:26there's that scene in the Aztecs where she's like, I would be
- 8:30told who to marry either. Yeah, but that's more rejecting.
- 8:34The idea of marriage rather than any hint of kind of sexuality
- 8:38there at all. But I mean, yeah, I think from
- 8:43today's standards if she's a sixteen-year-old girl than yes,
- 8:46it is a very, very bad form on a grandfather's but you know,
- 8:52they've been sort of maintenance.
- 8:54Stays overnight in the sensor is they show her sort of gaining, a
- 8:58bit of Independence that they and yeah, and rejecting his
- 9:01authority of a little bit. Yeah, I think the problem, the
- 9:05main problem with the Susan character is there's no
- 9:07consistency in there. Like one minute, as you say in
- 9:10the center, right, you do have this little bit of kind of
- 9:12Independence and but it's just like the next week.
- 9:16She's just screaming and crying and passing out there.
- 9:19So there's yeah, there's no consistency all we've just seen
- 9:22Ian full Downer a mine. A shaft that little that little
- 9:25model guys. The aqua is great.
- 9:28Yeah, but it's a little model and then it cuts to him going
- 9:30down, a slide in a studio. Now, I'm fine.
- 9:33It's like it's a complex. It's a complex production list.
- 9:38I am getting more forgiving of Richard master that he's managed
- 9:42to sew together, all these separate elements.
- 9:43So you've got a model shot. You've got this sort of cutting
- 9:48of the slide, then you've got location footage and then you've
- 9:52got Studio footage. It's a lot.
- 9:54Manage, I think I only really noticed how shoddy his Direction
- 10:00could be sometimes when I compared it with the other
- 10:02stories. And yeah, I watched the rescue
- 10:04after this, which is very simple story, but with some really
- 10:07beautiful camera work, and it added lighting and there's like
- 10:11a sequence with heart low in that Temple at the end and
- 10:14you've got Bennett coming in behind him and all the Smoky
- 10:16second and it's like a really crafted shot.
- 10:19You're not really getting any of that here.
- 10:20No, not at all. I'd be interested to see Richard
- 10:24Martin, we'd given a simpler story to Simply whether he did
- 10:28do but also having the dance of the Daleks at the moment.
- 10:30They're all getting very excited.
- 10:31Which picks us up again, chase, you know, they do a lot of sort
- 10:34of in and around singing their little Tardis song or I hate it.
- 10:38When the Daleks move unnecessarily, I've hated it in
- 10:41doomsday especially when they Shake every time they spoke like
- 10:44they were really agitated it really grinds my gears but I'm
- 10:48sure you know, other people love it.
- 10:51I I sort of like the movement of their bits so very nonspecific
- 10:59statement but yeah, I see what you're saying.
- 11:03It can be, it can be a bit comical kind of.
- 11:05Yeah, it's not too bad here but it's like they just also but it
- 11:11points in this and in others, it does get a bit agitating.
- 11:15So we've got Barbara about to give her It leads into a job,
- 11:22doesn't it? So she stands all of history so
- 11:25she puts together this very colorful and improbable mashup
- 11:29of characters and events. Yeah you know earlier on she
- 11:34said when there are heading to Bedford she was like, oh I used
- 11:37to live in Bedford and that got me thinking that she might used
- 11:39to commute into shortage every day because that's an hour and a
- 11:42half without traffic. I wonder.
- 11:45She's a bit grumpy. Yeah, exactly.
- 11:48What does she want? Any old excuse to follow
- 11:50students home? Yeah, it's no wonder.
- 11:52She wants to shack up with it and she's like, I need the bed
- 11:55somewhere closer to this school. And so, for our commutes round
- 11:58trip every day. She's probably dirty, isn't she?
- 12:01She's been done. Am on anyone afraid?
- 12:03Her sort of dirty up the regulars.
- 12:06Back in the 60s. I really like that.
- 12:08You know, where how to, or to do their dusk has never so Ian
- 12:13Chesterton at War because is there a true?
- 12:15Absolutely adores him things. He is the ultimate hero.
- 12:17The series We look at what he's doing right now is going down
- 12:20ropes climbing into bombs down mines.
- 12:23Moths save the Earth like this is the true heroic.
- 12:27Ian Chesterton isn't it? Yeah and he is, he's the action
- 12:30lead. The doctors a whole different
- 12:32character like he is the doctor still believe but it's a
- 12:36different type of lead in than we used to in conventional
- 12:40storytelling these days and I think perhaps that's why it's
- 12:42such a success because they've taken the intestines and
- 12:45character which would be the lead in any other drama and
- 12:48gone. We're going to almost Sidelines
- 12:51that character and give you somebody different and more
- 12:52interesting and that's where the f a bit of a daughtery old man.
- 12:58I'm actually a really interesting dynamic as well.
- 13:00That's what I loved about the Sarah Jane Adventures.
- 13:02So, then you have this older woman as the late.
- 13:06It's that would normally be the leads of a lot of secondary
- 13:09characters. Yeah, such a fantastic idea.
- 13:13He'll really perverse saying is after just talking about
- 13:15children, but I have to say, for the sake of a climax, I would
- 13:19have no issue at all with Ian Chesterton penetrating, my mind
- 13:24shot, Beautiful. Well, I mean you know I mean you
- 13:31saw the way with squatting in that bottom like I'm sure he
- 13:34could do all sorts of magic tricks.
- 13:36It's, very flexible man. That's how I went to a panto
- 13:38twice this week and has taken notes the whole time.
- 13:41Every time, every time that day we spoke I was like, right?
- 13:44This is perfect material for hamster but it's like it's a bit
- 13:49like the Daleks Now, isn't it? Like, there's a countdown.
- 13:53A bomb is gonna go off. Yeah.
- 13:56It's the same sort of For matters that, you know, it's
- 13:59just, it's the same climax essentially, it's but it's the,
- 14:05I guess kind of the stakes are higher because they're real
- 14:07human beings. And if you're watching this in
- 14:091964, you're going like this all suddenly feels more relatable in
- 14:14the way that falls and Garlic's necessarily don't.
- 14:18Yeah, this is great, he's having a proper dance around that set.
- 14:27That's probably what it. It's like them though is could
- 14:30run around the playground with your arms out you know.
- 14:33Yeah. But you compare this to just a
- 14:35few stories time and what happens in dark master plan.
- 14:39I mean, I know, we haven't seen all of it, but from the survival
- 14:41episode, there's none of this kind of just going around for
- 14:45the sake of us watching, Douglas Canfield was absolutely
- 14:48determined to make them scary that first scene, where young
- 14:52fellow whose name I've forgotten is rummaging around in that,
- 14:55Forest Falls to his knees and then there's that shot off of
- 14:58the Dalek looking down. Yeah, it's fine.
- 15:00And you're like, you're a different territory now.
- 15:02Yeah. That's a completely different
- 15:05like, especially considering I think I've unfairly kind of
- 15:10grouped together, a lot of Richard Martin stuff because I
- 15:13think there is this and his episodes of the Daleks.
- 15:17And then there is the Chase and the web Planet, which to
- 15:20enjoyable. But they are not technically
- 15:23well-executed and I think I loved it Chase but I think it's
- 15:28one of the most inept Salim. A Doctor Who's absolutely.
- 15:31It's an absolutely hate but it is not It's not well made but,
- 15:37you know what, they materialize, and that whole it house on that.
- 15:39Daleks be on the pole colors before they arrived.
- 15:42So, shawty with, there's a disappear.
- 15:44Actually, we see in here later where there's a as the rebels
- 15:48are escaping like as the rebels of the kind of one.
- 15:51You see, Danny end of a corridor.
- 15:53At the end of the corridor is the Senate from episode 1 and 6,
- 15:56where the Tardis landed, just under that bridge because of
- 16:03course Thank you. Get it.
- 16:04I do buy the argument time, money, blah, blah, etc, etc.
- 16:08But then I watched it that to surviving episodes daughters
- 16:10knots, man. I would say, well, he had the
- 16:12same amount of money. He had the same amount of time,
- 16:14you know? Mike but also like, you didn't
- 16:16get that in a lot of other stories that directed by lesser
- 16:19directors, as well. But we're not just talking
- 16:21Douglas County field here. We're talking everybody apart
- 16:24from Richmond. But yeah, I don't really think
- 16:28there's many shoddy directors except it's fella that they're
- 16:32giving all the x 2. I think you know I think it's
- 16:36only when you get into the 80s that we start getting and it's
- 16:40not a case of shoddy directors in the 80s.
- 16:42I think it's either inexperienced or too old school
- 16:46and not it like unable to kind of keep up with sort of modern
- 16:50production techniques like I'm thinking like Peter grimwade
- 16:54being a fantastic director of the a tease but then, you know
- 16:58like what's Johnny burn like history is just getting worse
- 17:00and worse and worse and by the end of it or Pete's them off it
- 17:03as well. Bye.
- 17:04I don't think I'm Johnny Burns mother.
- 17:05You're thinking of Ron Jones on Japan's yet Ron Jones, that's
- 17:09it. It's like I think Ron Jones
- 17:10learns, I think I think he's startled grateful in like time
- 17:14Flyers up like that. And then by the time you get to
- 17:16mindwarp, he's actually under these getting the lighting,
- 17:19right? Yeah, I suppose, you know, I
- 17:22suppose you're right here, I'm trying to think here or
- 17:24something but I don't know. Anyway, I just find the 80s hit
- 17:28and miss as a lot is a lot more hit and miss that, I think
- 17:31sixties Doctor Who is, I think the only other Other thing I
- 17:34could probably point a finger at is, maybe the underwater Menace
- 17:37but I think that was just too ambitious rather than it being
- 17:41the directors fault. I just don't think anybody could
- 17:43have done that Justice. I still fit that down.
- 17:47So the fish people is very many ways for many years that during
- 17:53the first lot. Not have any use for many months
- 17:55during the first lock down that fish background.
- 17:57That was my zoom background, whenever I was on Zoom, just
- 18:00floating fish people and that's what to ask for.
- 18:03Kroll, just going like that and the backgrounds.
- 18:05Oh man, even better. So Carrie, what's the plan?
- 18:15I think heart was about to tell all the robo men that this order
- 18:18cannot be countermanded. Now, mister earlier that Barbara
- 18:22already tried that, but the Daleks kicked out the way.
- 18:24So really the doctors use in Barbara's plan.
- 18:28That's was going to save the day all along.
- 18:30So you trying to tell me that when they were in that dark
- 18:33souls and if so to what they have to do is grab a microphone
- 18:35and go attack the flex and their son could have been over.
- 18:39Yeah, I mean anybody in this in this could have finished the
- 18:42story alongside hope I see. Look at this POV shot of the
- 18:46Donald is glorious and you get him.
- 18:48It's a Dalek facing off with the first doctor that you get
- 18:52shortly, and it's gorgeous. And it's like, a proper hero
- 18:55moment for the doctor. You can even see Sucker.
- 18:58They're just so, you know, it's definitely a Dalek.
- 19:03Yeah, it's absolutely gorgeous. Now, look here, what's that?
- 19:06Dalek operator doing smoking inside the barrel off again.
- 19:14They're all off. These are really excited.
- 19:18Say sequence in the second on location when all the miners
- 19:22come running out holding up a Dalek.
- 19:24Oh yeah, it's gorgeous. Like it's just And again really
- 19:28well-executed like it's obviously been rehearsed because
- 19:32on the day and they thought about their angles, they thought
- 19:35about what I was going to do and everyone's given their all and
- 19:37even though there's only 50 extra stay or something like
- 19:40that, it feels like it could be thousands.
- 19:42Mmm, your imagination. Sort of does the rest, doesn't
- 19:44it that poor old man? He's always in it.
- 19:47Whatever they're saying, is that old man in the face?
- 19:49Yeah, we just thought we did, we did just see Barbara during her
- 19:53dialogue with my friend, while it lasts teaching kids teaching
- 19:57It started with Dalek impression.
- 19:59It's brilliant. It's not quite as good as
- 20:01hartnell's was it? I fought them all.
- 20:03So, there it is. That it.
- 20:04Can you see? You may have just missed it for
- 20:06the as they walk through that door there.
- 20:07There was that it is forbidden to dump bodies in the river on
- 20:10the wall I'll know because we're going to be using that set
- 20:13later. Yeah.
- 20:15And nobody's thought even like I'll maybe we could just put up
- 20:18a like I don't know if sheets black sheet, something like
- 20:22that. I don't imagine they thought
- 20:23people were going to be watching this over and over again many
- 20:26times in the future you know. Ducks have been on for a year.
- 20:29Surely, they must have known my doctor who founds my life.
- 20:31Like a doll. The appreciation society was
- 20:35brewing up as we speak and he stopped.
- 20:39He was already watching. Wasn't he?
- 20:41Okay was there from? I think he watched from the, the
- 20:43week before, the first episode, just to make sure.
- 20:46And this is Doctor Who's first Quarry?
- 20:48Excellent. He's where is it?
- 20:51I don't know bed. First shit, I don't know.
- 20:55They've gone to the top of the ravine.
- 20:57There and shot down. Yeah.
- 20:59No it's not see. All the extras poor and out like
- 21:01ants. Yeah, no it's really a said
- 21:04really well done and like and I'll give him his credit where
- 21:08credit is due. I'll tell you what, there's two
- 21:10sequences are obviously. We'll talk about since his
- 21:13departure, which is very moving, but I think even more moving, is
- 21:17that moment where you hear? Big Bell bench?
- 21:19I'm yeah. And doesn't it up to say only
- 21:22the beginning or something like that.
- 21:24It's really lovely moment. Yeah, it is a lovely moments and
- 21:28I also think though at the end of the invasion is the best
- 21:33thing you've got to do with the old time.
- 21:35The being subjugated for you ring, bit like probably go find
- 21:40some food or something like that or let everybody know this stock
- 21:46footage. I was like, volcanic eruptions
- 21:50occurred? Yeah, exactly.
- 21:52We haven't quite, got the enemy of the world footage yet.
- 21:55So let's slide. It's all going on.
- 21:58Yeah, it still feels epic to me. I would load.
- 22:01There's those buildings. How many me the way I didn't
- 22:05realize they were used in This brilliant.
- 22:10All the way that wonder where that footage is from. nuclear
- 22:20inside into a Doctor Who and they're lovely and Davis playing
- 22:26Jenny now. Lifelong friendship with
- 22:28Jacqueline heal. Ya, but disappears.
- 22:30And then the final scene, the reason she's not in the final
- 22:35scene is because in an earlier draft, Jenny was adore.
- 22:38Ali was already on board. The Tardis hot, I didn't on
- 22:40there and she would have been the new companion before anybody
- 22:44was cast. Like so.
- 22:47And I don't even think the council was called Jenny at that
- 22:49point, but obviously, when they decided it wasn't going to be
- 22:53Jenny, that was Are in with them.
- 22:54They just didn't bother to writer into the final scene when
- 22:57they were they all say goodbye. I think I did know that but I'd
- 23:02forgotten that would we apply to any in the Tardis?
- 23:06I think it would've been a very different Dynamic.
- 23:08Yeah. Especially when her and Barbara
- 23:11finally fucked and you think yeah, it'll be very disappointed
- 23:16in the Romans when they reject Jenny and Barbara relaxing on
- 23:22those shows lingerie. But in Rome, anything, anything
- 23:26goes, you know what I mean? Like, isn't that book Byzantium
- 23:29of you're right? That I've not much keep talking.
- 23:32Yes, you do a bit racy. Well the driver Roman times
- 23:35everybody was shocked and everybody was, but they have the
- 23:37new adventures and BBC books. Everyone was shagging fix.
- 23:42Fits cried. I was having it off with
- 23:43everyone. Lucky fits.
- 23:46Yeah, did you notice mr. Rumbold then walking across with
- 23:53that plank of wood, totally waiting for his cue Don't you
- 24:02feel sorry for these actors? You know, they get they get
- 24:04called by their character's name was mr.
- 24:06Rumbold it? Oh, I love this with the shoe.
- 24:11Yeah, it's very sweet, honestly. She's always losing their
- 24:14fucking shoes. As remember keys of marinus.
- 24:17She can't keep your shoes on. It's just, you know they're
- 24:20wondering what to get rid of his.
- 24:21Probably run through all the shoes in the Tardis because she
- 24:23keeps fucking losing them. He calls her a little monkey.
- 24:31I mean, you just buy it though. The chemistry between them.
- 24:33It's so like, this is his goodbye and she sort of knows.
- 24:38It's a goodbye as well. And I've, you know, I've heard
- 24:43the vegan Doctor Who fans, I call them the vegan fans
- 24:47because, you know, they they shout the loudest about their,
- 24:51their political leanings and going on.
- 24:55You know, she doesn't have any agency here.
- 24:57The decisions taken out of her hand.
- 24:58That is the point. That's why it's Attic because
- 25:01she would never leave him. She would never go.
- 25:04But she has to go, you know. Chinese to build their own life
- 25:09with David Cameron as he did. He told me been paid by the
- 25:15tenant nowadays wouldn't either? Yeah, absolutely.
- 25:17Would he be? I mean, I don't in terms of like
- 25:2060s hot, man. I don't know whether this David
- 25:23is exactly what you would cast but like I think toilets her
- 25:29better. Yeah.
- 25:32I mean David doesn't really do it for me but you know, I'm not
- 25:35a sixteen-year-old Time lady called Susans.
- 25:39Neither am I don't do it for me. I wonder why tire was just sort
- 25:45of standing there then but if you know come find me later
- 25:49once, you know what you saw in this out but what?
- 25:51And once we all figure out what we're going to do with the rest
- 25:53of our lives, there's food over missed it.
- 25:56She froze, the key down in the dirt.
- 25:59Yeah. I'm should just that come back
- 26:02and Legacy of the Daleks. I feels like I feel like it's
- 26:04thing. Isn't one of the big finish's
- 26:06courses and small be one of those.
- 26:07Yeah. Okay.
- 26:10This is very weird though the way they can't actually look at
- 26:13each other. Yeah.
- 26:16I'd also like it's all that I do love you.
- 26:19I do, but it's a bit like, I mean, this is a very
- 26:22romanticized view of romance and you see in a lot of old films,
- 26:25but I mean, they've only had a snog and a slap around the face
- 26:29with a wet fish. Tank with saying this, usually
- 26:35don't get to episode 6 of my carpentry.
- 26:37So, so maybe you won't hear this but actually Marvel could be a
- 26:40bit like this. When it's talk about emotions
- 26:42and he saw tunnel is face when I sort of spin around and go.
- 26:45Even just grow a pair and tell me how you thinking.
- 26:47Yeah, I think it is a thing with men sometimes.
- 26:51Yeah, no, absolutely. But it feels like Susan's almost
- 26:54the one that doesn't want to talk about emotions but yeah, it
- 26:58is they do keep turning away from each other.
- 27:00It's very odd and, you know, the spirit here where he's like, oh
- 27:03baby they doing, do it much at that point, I'll be thinking
- 27:09about this for the rest of my life.
- 27:17Ba you no heart. No.
- 27:20Everything I said about. How do I absolutely?
- 27:23You know, I agree with. Obviously I said it, he had to
- 27:27erase this speech like a city. Yeah.
- 27:31It's also I think this speech gets a little bit lost in its
- 27:34because it was reused in the five doctors and actually the
- 27:37most touching bit of it, is when he just says goodbye, Susan,
- 27:40goodbye my dear right. Because obviously it's used out
- 27:42of context and they use it in adventure in time and space.
- 27:45Space as well. But it becomes more about the
- 27:48doctor when it's out of context of like, what, who the first
- 27:51doctor is. But actually it's all about
- 27:52season and it's a very touching speech speech.
- 27:55When you see it in context, I think I need a bit of moves me.
- 28:00The most is when the guy playing David finally does a bit good
- 28:05acting and just very understated.
- 28:07Lee says, he knew you'd never leave them.
- 28:10He doesn't fudge the line. For one saw the Harvard time, he
- 28:13sounds like a robot man. And this story saying his
- 28:15Dialogue. But yeah, he doesn't.
- 28:18And this like Han has not afraid of the camera.
- 28:20This camera gets right in his face and the second you got me
- 28:23pretty sure yourself when you're that exposed.
- 28:26Yeah. Quiet.
- 28:31I can, we have we have if it's a very touching to see and this I
- 28:35think this whole episode or this one part of it was shot in 90
- 28:39minutes or something like that. Really like, I've got a note
- 28:44here that says this was shot in 90 minutes.
- 28:45Now, I'm assuming it's this last section, so it's a lot to get
- 28:48through. It caught up in the whole
- 28:50episode. Put this thing, I think they
- 28:52only had a couple of hours in the evening for two episodes
- 28:55that mean they would be black blocking it all day and yeah but
- 28:59they just have that sort of the cameras for a couple of hours.
- 29:02I love as well, Harry Strokes his lapel, libraries famous for
- 29:05holding his lapels but the way he Strokes them with his having
- 29:08this more tender moment. As you know, doing his classic
- 29:12television is very, very small, you've got to act from the
- 29:14television and isn't it? So movie in the rescue, When he
- 29:19says, oh Susan, would you open? And they don't, he doesn't quite
- 29:24know what to do this here and then, you know, Barbara step in
- 29:26and like, yeah, you show me how to open the door.
- 29:32There's this lovely moment here with Susan reaches out to touch
- 29:34the dirt where the Tardis was like like it might still be
- 29:38there but it's just it's just not.
- 29:41I just wanted to deliver a line a bit like one of caffeine takes
- 29:43character scale. I'm are stuck here in this shit
- 29:46out honestly. And this music as well.
- 29:50That's great. Yeah, lovely.
- 29:53It sounds like a drunk organ. But I do what I really like
- 30:01about the 60s and they lose it in the 70s and 80s.
- 30:04I don't know. Why is they give time for these
- 30:08extended coders? Yeah, and it's lovely.
- 30:11And that's what you get. If you got sick hearts and, you
- 30:14know, there's many a problem with the six passes, but it does
- 30:17give you little chance for these.
- 30:19That they are the six-part real invasion of time and that's
- 30:22still that last senior leaders just so brief.
- 30:24Oh God. Yeah, it's horrible.
- 30:27But that's Graham. Graham Williams refusing to let
- 30:30her go and they're realizing he's going to rather than I
- 30:33think if you if you're going to like go in and 52 weeks of
- 30:37adventures with these characters, you owe it to the
- 30:40audience to give them a bit of time like this.
- 30:43Absolutely, it's still there. Clutching hands holding hands
- 30:48like it takes a while. Like even in invasion of time
- 30:52that whole sequence would have been done in 30 seconds of
- 30:55screen, so yeah, quit canine Marks here and then he totally
- 31:03weird miss you too Savage. Right?
- 31:05Let's get the box out, let's go. It got a new mic on me.
- 31:08Best mate. Don't be worried.
- 31:10And then this this still of the kind of next episode, the
- 31:16powerful enemy. It's not even that powerful than
- 31:19X7 almost. Like it's got a lovely character
- 31:24stuff and it's an absolute Corker.
- 31:28Well, I don't know if you know how this works at the end of the
- 31:30story. Laughs.
- 31:32Oh you do. Okay, I didn't prepare anything
- 31:34but I know you're going to ask me three things that I love
- 31:37about apartment 13B. You tell me.
- 31:39You tell me what, just three things that you'd recommend,
- 31:43Dalek invasion of Earth to people, it will bat one a piece
- 31:46each back and forth. Pulled off you go.
- 31:49I am actually, as I said, I'm turning 90 degrees 360 degrees
- 31:55on Richard Martin's Direction here, and I'm going to say this
- 31:58is the best thing you directs, especially those last three
- 32:00episodes. And I think everybody should
- 32:02check it out for what he is capable of.
- 32:05That's a bold claim. Honestly, that's the third time
- 32:08it's holding. Jump fall out their seats.
- 32:13I am going to say that the really impressive World building
- 32:17in this. I think it's such an obvious
- 32:20idea. The Dalek invasion of oh, and it
- 32:21probably could have just been a lot of sort of running around
- 32:23and action, but actually we meet a lot of characters from this
- 32:27time period, we learn a lot of detail.
- 32:29I like all the when they detail the, you know, the plague
- 32:32missile coming down and out that it was sort of in stages and
- 32:36things like that. Yeah.
- 32:38So I think, in terms of a set Eating.
- 32:41And Visually with the sex with the location we're going to well
- 32:44that I think it's one of the most Vivid settings we've ever
- 32:47had in the Doctor Who story. Absolutely, and to kind of build
- 32:50on that a bit more. I would say the film work as
- 32:54well which is sort of the direction and sort of the were
- 32:56building. It's just what the film work in
- 32:59the mines and stuff like that. Really sells the revolution at
- 33:02the end and also the scale of kind of the people enslaved and
- 33:06the stuff of empty London in the early episodes is just gorgeous.
- 33:10So, yeah, I think the Film work is my second point.
- 33:13We managed to get more suspense. Our last shot of that swinging
- 33:17claw. Remember that episode?
- 33:18What then he does for out the entire sequence of the Dalek
- 33:21salsa being attacked in episode 2?
- 33:23Yeah it's clearly where a lot of his dreams are.
- 33:27My second thing then is going to be a white and preparing things
- 33:32out. So I'm 83 unprepared for this,
- 33:34okay? I'm going to give her a juice.
- 33:37Is Caroline Falls leaving story? It's a story of probably gives a
- 33:41beyond the first episode. And past possibly sensor has the
- 33:45most to do. I buy the relationship between
- 33:47her and David. She is still a little bit whiny,
- 33:51but far less winded and she can be another stories.
- 33:55I think he's a really good exit for Susan, and I don't know why
- 33:58this happens, but the shit companions very often get right
- 34:03exits. It's a, it happen with a drink
- 34:07as well. Well yeah, I quite like the
- 34:08understated exit of mail, so if I'm honest, but it is weak.
- 34:13But yeah, so I'm going to say, Susan, okay.
- 34:17And I'm going to go to the doctor, which I know is an
- 34:20obvious one, but aren't all this.
- 34:22Just at its peak, he's owning the party and the doctor has
- 34:26become a hero. You know, he's there and he's
- 34:29like, I'm going to defeat the Daleks and that's what he does.
- 34:31And that iconic shot of him in the Dalek got a vision, the sir,
- 34:37Cool thing is just beautiful, and I just think it's also the
- 34:40little interactions. He has with Susan and the other
- 34:43characters with David, and it's like he's owning that part and
- 34:47he is, he's a doctor who is fully formed now as a character
- 34:51I think and that's dancer William heart and my last thing
- 34:54that is going to be it's going to be those moments of quite
- 34:58understated horror that hit throughout the story that make
- 35:02it a little bit darker and a bit more graphic than it.
- 35:05Is the robo man with the The knife in his back, the the
- 35:12rubber man, and the brother, killing each other.
- 35:15There's not, there's, there's some quite violent stuff in
- 35:17this, which these are the bit where the Dalek goes kill him.
- 35:22Just murder someone randomly. Yeah.
- 35:25All the fellows off-screen going know you're my brother.
- 35:28No, it's a very violent story. It's Savage.
- 35:33And in the it's just goes to show what a ruthless horrible
- 35:36Invasion. This is It's not like, it's very
- 35:40easy for these sorts of invasions to be played quite
- 35:43two-dimensionally. But favor kind of horror aspects
- 35:46of this and the ruthlessness of the Daleks really makes you go.
- 35:49I know these people have all been through some shit over the
- 35:51last few years and it's just been Relentless and everybody,
- 35:54they know is dead and they're all exhausted.
- 35:58But I don't see you often. We've covered this in some depth
- 36:00now you know I don't think anybody's got anything else left
- 36:05to say about the demands. I know I said we are done.
- 36:09We'll slide that into the, into the wall, then, and we'll slide
- 36:12that one. What we're doing next.
- 36:14We did agree on something. Oh yeah, Dima sort of Punjab
- 36:17Demons of the Punjab. Yes, very exciting from one end
- 36:20of the series, right up to the, the more recent end.
- 36:23It's exciting to see those two areas and as said, Earlier, I do
- 36:29think was they've got a lot in common so compare and contrast
- 36:33when we do that one, I think as well like this Punjab is pushing
- 36:39what Doctor Who can do visually, yeah.
- 36:43But with modern TV, and a modern budget and I think it looks
- 36:50extraordinary. I think everything about that
- 36:52episode is fairly extraordinary. It's a lovely, lovely episodes
- 36:56and I can't wait to revisit Again very soon it's gonna get
- 37:00this down on record just for you, change your mind, but we're
- 37:02also going to be in the future doing all six episodes of the
- 37:07flux season. We absolutely are and I cannot
- 37:10wait that because I love that season.
- 37:13I like you too, so I cannot wait to revisit it.
- 37:16I watched the Halloween apocalypse quite recently just
- 37:19as the one off, just to watch it.
- 37:20And I still thought it was one of the best openers of a season
- 37:23of Doctor Who is really, it isn't a light for me, wore this
- 37:27on. Terrance and Phillip are the
- 37:30Angels, their term, our favorites of the year are but
- 37:34the two of my favorites of new who, as well, I have warrants on
- 37:38time as it is. Probably possibly Chippendales
- 37:42best script. I think Jodie Whittaker.
- 37:45I've never been better than she is in that story.
- 37:48Yeah, she's fantastic. Well, I can't wait to revisit
- 37:50those in the future if you future.
- 37:55What? I just leaves me to say, a
- 37:56massive, thank you very much for your time.
- 37:58You're a busy man, but it's been an absolute Delight.
- 38:02Oh, it's been a pleasure and I will come back at any time and
- 38:04talk about any Doctor Who related nonsense with you.
- 38:08You'll live to regret that statement.
- 38:12Foom amazing. Hey, we did it.
- 38:19Bring this out now.
