Transcript
- 0:11Merry Christmas, my beautiful listeners and watchers.
- 0:13If you're brand new here, welcome.
- 0:15My name is Megan and this is Vigilante Vibes where we talk
- 0:18all things Marvel and since it's Christmas, I figured what better
- 0:22way to celebrate them than talking about one of the wildest
- 0:26character Marvel Comics. That is completely on theme with
- 0:29Christmas and it continues my coverage of the underrated
- 0:35mutants of Marvel Universe. I'm talking about Santa Claus.
- 0:40You heard that right. Santa Claus is canonically
- 0:44canonically. I just realized I've never said
- 0:46that word out loud before so hopefully that's right.
- 0:50Anyways, Santa Claus is an Omega level mutant.
- 0:53Before I get started, be sure to like and subscribe so you don't
- 0:55miss anything else I put out. Because I put out so much comic
- 0:58reviews, movie reviews, trailer reactions, character breakdowns,
- 1:02wonderful interviews with wonderful guests if I just say
- 1:04so myself. So be sure to follow.
- 1:07Also, I am super sick. What better thing do you want on
- 1:14Christmas Eve? Eve, them being super sick.
- 1:18So apologize for all this. And if I look like I'm dying,
- 1:23it's probably because I am. So let's get into this.
- 1:27So Santa Claus, an Omega level mutant, how did this come about?
- 1:32How do we know? Has it confirmed in the comics?
- 1:35I'm going to tell you all of it at one point.
- 1:38The X Men's mutant detecting supercomputer Cerebro actually
- 1:42identified Santa Claus as the most powerful Omega level mutant
- 1:46it has ever registered. That puts him in the same
- 1:49category, if not more, as characters like Iceman, Cable,
- 1:54even Jean Grey. This reveal comes from the story
- 1:58A Miracle, a few blocks down from 34th Street by Scott
- 2:01Lobdell and Dave Cockrum, which appeared in the 1991 Marvel
- 2:06Holiday Special. The whole thing starts with the
- 2:09X-Men just hanging out, chilling, decorating their
- 2:12Christmas tree when Cerebro suddenly starts going nuts.
- 2:16It alerts them that the strongest mutant it has ever
- 2:18detected has just appeared. When they follow the signal to
- 2:21Manhattan, they discover that the source of this massive
- 2:24mutant power is Santa Claus. The team rushes to Rockefeller
- 2:30Center, meets Santa, sit face to face, and things immediately go
- 2:34off the rails. Santa casually turns the
- 2:37Brotherhood of Evil mutants into toys and then wipes everyone's
- 2:40memory of the encounter like it's no big deal.
- 2:43And what I love the most about the story was how cocky Santa
- 2:46Claus was. I don't know, it's just so
- 2:52funny. That memory wipe is pretty much
- 2:55the reason Santa being an Omega level mutant has almost never
- 2:58come up again because no one remembers it even happened.
- 3:02And honestly, it's the perfect example of just how ridiculously
- 3:05overpowered Santa is in Marvel Comics.
- 3:08Thankfully, the X-Men weren't the last major heroes cross
- 3:12paths with the mysterious Man in Red.
- 3:15So now let's dive into the back story of Marvel's Omega level
- 3:18mutant Santa Claus. Santa made his first, very first
- 3:24official appearance in Marvel Canon all the way back in 1955,
- 3:28before Marvel Comics was even officially Marvel Comics.
- 3:32He debuted under the Atlas Comics banner and Strange tales
- 3:35#34 which was an anthology series that leaned hard into
- 3:39weird and supernatural stories. So of course, it had to have
- 3:43Santa Claus. In this particularly strange
- 3:46tale, a struggling garage attendant named Sammy Glenn gets
- 3:49the chance to borrow the car of a wealthy customer for six
- 3:52hours. During that short window, his
- 3:54entire life turns around. He lands a better job, even
- 3:58finds love. By the end of the issue, it's
- 4:01revealed that the rich customer was Santa Claus the entire time,
- 4:05and this was his roundabout way of giving Santa an early
- 4:07Christmas present, which is aw adorable.
- 4:13In the Marvel Universe, Santa has just as many origin stories
- 4:17as he does in real life, if not more.
- 4:19According to Marvel lore, there were actually three separate
- 4:22figures whose legends eventually blended together.
- 4:26Over time, humanity's collective beliefs merged those stories
- 4:30into the single being we now know as Santa Claus.
- 4:34This unusual history was officially laid out in the
- 4:36official Handbook of the Marvel Universe profile featured in the
- 4:392006 Marvel Holiday Special. It's just, if you go looking for
- 4:44it, just look for the pages with no pictures.
- 4:49It's just words all over. So it's a lot of reading, but
- 4:53it's interesting. It goes into the whole back
- 4:55story of Santa Claus and where he came from.
- 4:59One of those original Santas was the real world Saint Nicholas,
- 5:03the Bishop of Myra in what is now modern day Turkey.
- 5:07He was famous for his generosity, including the story
- 5:09where he secretly gave gold to three impoverished women so they
- 5:13could afford dowries and get married.
- 5:16Today, Saint Nicholas is remembered as the patron St. of
- 5:19children, especially poor children and travelers, and he's
- 5:23often described as a protector of anyone in need.
- 5:26Another influence came from Old Winter, a figure rooted in pre
- 5:31medieval Britain. During the winter solstice, a
- 5:33trusted elder from the village would dress in animal furs and
- 5:37go door to door, offering food and drink to anyone who showed
- 5:41hospitality. Overtime this tradition evolved
- 5:44into Old Father Christmas and eventually just Father
- 5:48Christmas. The 3rd and final influence on
- 5:52Marvel's Santa mythology is Odin, the All Father of Asgard.
- 5:57In the 1991 Marvel Holiday Special, Odin stepped in to save
- 6:00a Norse villages midwinter celebration.
- 6:03He gifted the villagers some of Asgard's finest food, wine
- 6:08linens, and even arranged A guiding signal to help lost
- 6:12sailors find their way home in time for the feast.
- 6:14These legends eventually merged with the others, giving rise to
- 6:17the Santa Claus we now know in Marvel Comics.
- 6:21Marvel Santa is clearly powerful, but exactly where that
- 6:26power comes from is still kind of unclear.
- 6:28Since he's fueled by belief, he feels closer to a God on par
- 6:32with the AS Guardians, or even the Greek pantheon.
- 6:36At the same time, his abilities are often described as magical,
- 6:39which makes sense considering Odin's involvement.
- 6:42But then things get complicated because Santa has also been
- 6:45confirmed to be a mutant, so he has an X gene.
- 6:48Being a mutant doesn't mean you can't use magic though.
- 6:51The characters like magic. Ileana Rasputina and the Goblin
- 6:55Queen Madeline Pryor do both it, but it definitely does blur the
- 6:58lines when it comes to his abilities.
- 7:01Santa is functionally immortal, can deadlift around 2 tons, and
- 7:06has claimed to possess super speed, although he still relies
- 7:10on his sleigh and reindeer to get around.
- 7:13His magic sack has near infinite storage, allowing him to carry
- 7:17gifts for every good person on earth.
- 7:19He also appears to be telepathic, instantly knowing
- 7:22whether someone has been naughty or nice, and may even have
- 7:26passive mind control or charisma abilities that make people more
- 7:30kind just by bearing being near him.
- 7:33Santa also doesn't work alone. He's assisted in his yearly gift
- 7:37giving mission by an entire workforce of elves who spend
- 7:40most of the year building toys and prepping the sleigh for
- 7:42Christmas Eve. In a very Marvel twist, these
- 7:46elves aren't just fairy tale creatures, they're actually
- 7:49interdimensional refugees from Alfine, the realm of the Light
- 7:53elves and Asgardian lore. While Marvel hasn't fully told
- 7:58the story of how these elves came to work for Santa, most of
- 8:01them seem genuinely happy in the North Pole Workshop, especially
- 8:05when you consider that Alfheim is frequently caught up in wars
- 8:10and cosmic disasters, so they really got the best end of that
- 8:13deal by taking that job. Over the years, Santa has
- 8:17crossed paths with a shocking number of Marvel characters in
- 8:21Marvel age #109. He was kidnapped by Adolf
- 8:24Hitler, prompting Captain America, Bucky and Nick Fury to
- 8:28launch a rescue mission. Later in Nick Fury, Agent of
- 8:32shield #10, Santa helped foil a hate monger plot to bomb New
- 8:37York City on Christmas Eve. One of the villains became so
- 8:41distracted by the sight of Santa flying a sleigh that he crashed
- 8:44his plane into the bomb, setting it off early.
- 8:47Santa also has teamed up with Howard the Duck twice, worked
- 8:52undercover with She Hulk as a private investigator under the
- 8:54alias Nick Saint Christopher, and once joined forces with Luke
- 8:59Cage and Iron Fist to banish the demon Krampus.
- 9:02Deadpool is even hard to assassinate him, though to Wade
- 9:05Wilson's credit, he absolutely could not go through with it.
- 9:10While Santa first tangled with characters like Captain America
- 9:14and the X-Men, he's been popping up across Marvel Comics for
- 9:17decades now, which has given him plenty of opportunities to team
- 9:20up with just about anyone. He's helped Spider Man shut down
- 9:24a dangerous Santa impersonator, Assisted Captain Marvel in
- 9:28stopping an evil corporation from experimenting on homeless
- 9:32people battling Nanny and the Orphan Maker, and even taught
- 9:37the Great Lakes Avengers and X-Men the true meaning of
- 9:39Christmas. Going back to when he worked
- 9:42with She Hulk, he tried to do something different.
- 9:46He was. During one offseason, he created
- 9:48the persona Nick Saint Christopher and hit the streets
- 9:50of New York City as a hard boiled private investigator.
- 9:54In that role, Santa cross paths with She Hulk again helped her
- 9:57investigate a serial killer case she was working on as a
- 10:00Christmas gift. He also gave her the ability to
- 10:02revert back to Jennifer Walters, something she could not do at
- 10:05the time, so she could spend the holidays with her family.
- 10:08After that, Santa retired the Pi gig and headed back to the North
- 10:12Pole. Then there's the infamous story
- 10:15where Santa Claus welded the Infinity Gauntlet.
- 10:18This story takes place in an alternate universe and isn't
- 10:21considered official Canon, but it is set in the universe nearly
- 10:25identical to Earth 616. In that reality, Santa 424 O 9
- 10:31discovered that his reindeer had been replaced by scrolls.
- 10:34To make sure Christmas wasn't ruined, he asked the Illuminati
- 10:37to borrow the Infinity Gauntlet so he could finish his
- 10:41deliveries. Unfortunately, even Santa wasn't
- 10:44immune to the Gauntlets corruptive influence.
- 10:47Iron Man, Mr. Fantastic and the rest of the team had to step in
- 10:50and forcibly remove it from him, something they managed to do,
- 10:54but only just like they barely got it.
- 10:58Once it was over, Tony Stark built Santa a set of robotic
- 11:02reindeer, and Christmas was saved once again by Earth's most
- 11:05influential heroes and by Santa, Earth's Mightiest Mutant.
- 11:10Possibly the weirdest Marvel moment of what all came in the
- 11:14what? The number 10 from 1990.
- 11:17After Santa was injured by Doctor Doom security systems,
- 11:21Doom felt honor bound to finish Santa's Christmas deliveries
- 11:25himself. The whole experience even ended
- 11:28with Doom receiving a stuffed bear, a gift from a young girl
- 11:32who had earlier saved him from getting beaten up by superheroes
- 11:35who assumed he was doing something shady.
- 11:37Which is very, very fair because it's Doctor Doom.
- 11:40But I mean, he's delivering presents.
- 11:43What do you you can't assume he's a Grinch, but I loved him.
- 11:47I'd follow him into battle. So who am I to judge?
- 11:51So yeah, that is Santa Claus in the Marvel Universe.
- 11:54I when I first learned of Santa Claus in the Marvel Universe, I
- 11:59didn't think he was. I didn't think he was even
- 12:02anything more than Santa. I didn't think he was a mutant.
- 12:05I didn't think he had all these team UPS.
- 12:07I didn't think he had lore that had to do with the Marvel
- 12:11Universe. So I hope you guys learned
- 12:13something from this and I hope you have a lovely holiday
- 12:16whether it's Hanukkah, Christmas, whatever you believe
- 12:18or whatever you celebrate. I will be going to take some
- 12:24aspirin and go wrap presents until my brain falls out of my
- 12:29eye sockets because I am so sick right now.
- 12:33So hope it didn't show too much in my episode.
- 12:35So with that being said, Happy holidays and have a marvelous
- 12:38day.
