Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: What 'Finding Your Why' Really Means
Transcript
- 0:21Speaker 1: Bonjour, hurdlers. I will say this now. I cannot speak
- 0:24Speaker 1: French at all, but I am in Paris and you
- 0:29Speaker 1: are listening to five Minute Friday. I'm here right now.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Was invited by Adidas to celebrate one hundred days out
- 0:36Speaker 1: to the Olympics. They revealed their kits earlier this week.
- 0:40Speaker 1: I was so stoked to be a part of that
- 0:43Speaker 1: experience and also had the opportunity to sit down with
- 0:46Speaker 1: some stellar athletes who will be coming to the Feed
- 0:52Speaker 1: in season seventeen. As a note for all of you,
- 0:55Speaker 1: Hurdle is going on a season break next week for
- 0:58Speaker 1: two weeks. I can't We've been going straight through this year.
- 1:02Speaker 1: I think something like thirty two or thirty four episodes
- 1:06Speaker 1: so far and season seventeen premieres. Let me get the
- 1:10Speaker 1: date for you here on May sixth with I'm not
- 1:15Speaker 1: going to lie a pretty stellar episode. But in the meantime,
- 1:19Speaker 1: I want to talk to you about what I interviewed
- 1:21Speaker 1: someone about yesterday. I was sitting down with Grant Holloway.
- 1:25Speaker 1: This will not be on the show. It was for
- 1:27Speaker 1: an upcoming article on GQ, and I asked Grant how
- 1:32Speaker 1: it is that he shows up day in and day out.
- 1:34Speaker 1: He was talking to me about how rigorous his training
- 1:37Speaker 1: schedule is, how dialed in he is on not just
- 1:40Speaker 1: the way that he prepares and the way that he
- 1:42Speaker 1: excels within sport, but also the way that he recovers.
- 1:46Speaker 1: And he takes his nutrition really seriously. He can tell
- 1:48Speaker 1: me exactly what he eats for breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner,
- 1:53Speaker 1: He gets his sleep in, he goes to acupuncture, he
- 1:56Speaker 1: does body work. And he told me that he was
- 2:01Speaker 1: so sure that he wanted to remove the butt and
- 2:05Speaker 1: the if, that he had a really rough year on
- 2:08Speaker 1: the track in twenty twenty two and knew that he
- 2:13Speaker 1: was finally ready after that tough year to put his
- 2:17Speaker 1: best foot forward to go all in. And I can
- 2:21Speaker 1: really appreciate that. I think it takes a lot of
- 2:25Speaker 1: diligence to get to a place where you're willing to
- 2:28Speaker 1: remove the butt and the IF. I will say this,
- 2:32Speaker 1: and I say this reflecting on the episode that I
- 2:36Speaker 1: put out a couple weeks ago talking about how I
- 2:38Speaker 1: want to be back here this summer. You can be
- 2:40Speaker 1: in a place where you want to remove the button
- 2:43Speaker 1: the IF, but it's so important that no matter what
- 2:47Speaker 1: you have going on, and no matter how diligent you
- 2:49Speaker 1: are in the pursuit of the things that light you
- 2:51Speaker 1: on fire, that you find grace with yourself. Grace looks
- 2:56Speaker 1: like knowing that I'm giving everything that I have to
- 2:59Speaker 1: something and also being okay knowing that there's more to
- 3:04Speaker 1: me than whatever goal I'm going after. I have the
- 3:07Speaker 1: opportunity to talk to you so many athletes and share
- 3:10Speaker 1: their stories with you here on the show, and so
- 3:12Speaker 1: many of them have talked about the sacrifice and the
- 3:15Speaker 1: opportunity cost that goes hand in hand with going after
- 3:18Speaker 1: their big goals, and they have come to a place
- 3:22Speaker 1: where they understand that as a human they are so
- 3:25Speaker 1: much more than their sport, and we are so much
- 3:27Speaker 1: more than our goals. So I believe that it is
- 3:31Speaker 1: so important, regardless of whatever it is that you're going after,
- 3:35Speaker 1: that you find that grace and that compassion for yourself
- 3:38Speaker 1: and you talk to yourself like you would a loved one.
- 3:41Speaker 1: It's one thing to push yourself toward the things that
- 3:44Speaker 1: excite you. It's one thing to put in the work
- 3:47Speaker 1: to go all in, but it's another thing to make
- 3:50Speaker 1: sure that you have that essential amount of compassion that
- 3:53Speaker 1: enables you to be kind, to be good, to be
- 3:57Speaker 1: considerate of the human that you are outside of your goals.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Can you tell that I'm giving myself a little bit
- 4:04Speaker 1: of a pep talk. I also do want to say
- 4:06Speaker 1: this because if you are someone that is trying to
- 4:09Speaker 1: remove the button, if I would encourage you to dial
- 4:12Speaker 1: in on your why, sit down and write down why
- 4:16Speaker 1: this thing is important to you. And I don't want
- 4:19Speaker 1: one sentence, right, I want pages. I want you to
- 4:23Speaker 1: visualize and think about and look at what it is
- 4:27Speaker 1: about that goal, what it is about that thing that
- 4:30Speaker 1: really resonates with you, and candidly. Sometimes when doing this exercise,
- 4:35Speaker 1: I realize that the thing that I thought that I
- 4:38Speaker 1: wanted might not be so glitzy and shiny and exciting
- 4:41Speaker 1: after all, and that's okay. In order to move forward,
- 4:45Speaker 1: in order to find clarity, whether that clarity reveals what
- 4:49Speaker 1: it is that you thought that you were after or not,
- 4:51Speaker 1: you have to get honest about where you're at and
- 4:54Speaker 1: so get specific on your goals, what your why is,
- 4:59Speaker 1: by giving yourself the space to explore it and knowing
- 5:02Speaker 1: that it's okay to pivot, it's okay to shift, it's
- 5:05Speaker 1: okay that maybe the thing that you wanted. Isn't the
- 5:08Speaker 1: thing that really is the best for you after all?
- 5:11Speaker 1: But you can't make that realization unless you give yourself
- 5:14Speaker 1: the air, the space to really dive. All in my
- 5:18Speaker 1: prompter you this week is what is your why? What
- 5:22Speaker 1: is the big goal that you are going after right now?
- 5:25Speaker 1: And take the time to write on it. What is
- 5:28Speaker 1: your why? What are you going after? And I'd love
- 5:31Speaker 1: it candidly if you tag me in your big goals
- 5:34Speaker 1: on social tag Hurdle, tag me over at Hurdle podcast
- 5:38Speaker 1: and over at Emily a Body and let's dream big together.
- 5:42Speaker 1: And now a listener question.
- 5:46Speaker 2: Hi, Emily, my name is Lisa. I'm calling you from
- 5:49Speaker 2: the great state of Maine. I've been a Hurdle listener
- 5:52Speaker 2: for the past couple of years now, and I wanted
- 5:54Speaker 2: to start by thanking you for all the light that
- 5:56Speaker 2: you bring into the world. I love sharing little nippets
- 6:00Speaker 2: of your podcast with my students as they try to
- 6:05Speaker 2: find their own way in this world. I'm a middle
- 6:08Speaker 2: school teacher and my question has to do with where
- 6:13Speaker 2: you saw your life headed when you were in college.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Did you think that you'd be hosting a show like this.
- 6:21Speaker 2: I know that you went into journalism and writing, and
- 6:24Speaker 2: I just didn't know if hurdle was something that you
- 6:28Speaker 2: imagined and manifested or was it something that was a
- 6:33Speaker 2: culmination of a lot of other activities. Thanks again for.
- 6:38Speaker 1: What you do, Hey, Lisa, this is a good one.
- 6:42Speaker 1: You know, it wasn't on my radar at all. In college,
- 6:46Speaker 1: I double majored in political science and journalism, so I
- 6:50Speaker 1: definitely knew that I wanted to do writing. I briefly
- 6:54Speaker 1: thought about law school and then decided that just was
- 6:56Speaker 1: not for me. I interned at Fitness Magazine my junior
- 7:02Speaker 1: year of college, and then I interned at the Hertford
- 7:05Speaker 1: Current newspaper my senior year of college. Got a job
- 7:09Speaker 1: right out right out of college as a paid intern
- 7:14Speaker 1: at Cafe Mom's The Stir, which was a woman's lifestyle
- 7:18Speaker 1: blog back in twenty ten, and then got hired at
- 7:22Speaker 1: Cafe Mom a few months later as an editorial assistant,
- 7:26Speaker 1: and so I ran full force into digital media. I
- 7:30Speaker 1: worked in digital at Cafe Mom. Then I worked as
- 7:34Speaker 1: a fitness editor at Rodale, which is no longer. It's
- 7:37Speaker 1: a publishing company that was sold to Hurst, and then
- 7:41Speaker 1: I left Rodale and got let Go just signed the
- 7:46Speaker 1: Times publishing industry corporate layoffs. Standard landed at Self Magazine
- 7:52Speaker 1: five days later. Was the fitness editor itself for a
- 7:55Speaker 1: year before Self Magazine folded, And so I was having
- 7:59Speaker 1: this like sensive career as a digital and print journalist.
- 8:04Speaker 1: I was doing the things itself that I dreamed of
- 8:07Speaker 1: doing ever since I was little. I was on photo shoots,
- 8:09Speaker 1: I was interviewing athletes. I was getting to go to
- 8:13Speaker 1: cool events and travel the world and just so much
- 8:16Speaker 1: awesome stuff. I had my dream job at the time,
- 8:19Speaker 1: and when I lost that job, I had no thought
- 8:22Speaker 1: or inkling that I would start a podcast. But I
- 8:26Speaker 1: did know that I had a goal, and my goal
- 8:31Speaker 1: was to empower other women to find their own potential
- 8:35Speaker 1: to level up in whatever way excites them. I knew
- 8:41Speaker 1: that I wanted to use my voice for good, and
- 8:44Speaker 1: I got to a point in my freelance writing journey
- 8:48Speaker 1: after I left Self Magazine that I felt as though
- 8:53Speaker 1: some of the articles that I was writing they didn't
- 8:55Speaker 1: excite me, they didn't feel like I was pursuing my
- 8:58Speaker 1: passions and my purpose, And so I did. The thing
- 9:01Speaker 1: that I talk about on the show pretty often was
- 9:03Speaker 1: that I made an a b and C list Column A,
- 9:07Speaker 1: it's the things that you're doing right now that you
- 9:08Speaker 1: absolutely love, Colum B the things you're doing right now
- 9:11Speaker 1: that you're kind of okay with, that you like and
- 9:14Speaker 1: you don't mind, and callum cee the things that you
- 9:17Speaker 1: want to step away from, the things that you could
- 9:18Speaker 1: totally do without and candidly you probably don't like doing
- 9:21Speaker 1: them at all. How can I look at this list
- 9:25Speaker 1: and start to do more within B and A knowing
- 9:28Speaker 1: that getting rid of callum C, especially when money is
- 9:31Speaker 1: involved and you have to make a living, it doesn't
- 9:33Speaker 1: happen overnight. And I make this list twice a year
- 9:37Speaker 1: still to this day, doing an honest audit with myself
- 9:41Speaker 1: about how I'm expending my energy and what I want
- 9:44Speaker 1: to be doing more of, and what I want to
- 9:46Speaker 1: get rid of, meeting myself with where I'm at and
- 9:50Speaker 1: having that honest dialogue. And so back to the question, No,
- 9:55Speaker 1: I never thought that I'd be podcasting, but podcasting and
- 9:58Speaker 1: having these conversations it makes me feel like I am
- 10:02Speaker 1: so aligned with my passion and my purpose, and it
- 10:05Speaker 1: also has opened the door for me to step into
- 10:09Speaker 1: every version of myself. It's opened the door for me
- 10:12Speaker 1: to meet myself in every iteration, and I'm excited to
- 10:16Speaker 1: meet the Emily that will be in five years. I've
- 10:19Speaker 1: learned so much about the things that excite me personally professionally,
- 10:23Speaker 1: I know now that I am so excited to do
- 10:27Speaker 1: more event hosting, more facilitating, and I love nothing more
- 10:32Speaker 1: than the moment of impact, as I call it, the
- 10:34Speaker 1: moment where I see the light bulb go off where
- 10:37Speaker 1: I can have a conversation with someone or be facilitating
- 10:41Speaker 1: a dialogue and see that they two are really understanding
- 10:46Speaker 1: and comprehending their own big potential and are excited to
- 10:49Speaker 1: go and do the next thing, to take the next leap.
- 10:53Speaker 1: That's what I want to be dialed in on. So yes,
- 10:57Speaker 1: I'm podcasting, but I'm also constantly understanding that there's more
- 11:01Speaker 1: to this and I don't exactly know what that is,
- 11:03Speaker 1: just like I didn't exactly know what that was when
- 11:06Speaker 1: I started podcasting, and that I think is the really
- 11:09Speaker 1: good stuff at Emilybody at Hurdle Podcast. And also, if
- 11:14Speaker 1: you're still listening to this, and I know that you
- 11:16Speaker 1: know thousands of you are, please consider leaving a voice message.
