- 0:19Speaker 2: with the career. It's Leggy on Altitude Sports Radio.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Five.
- 0:29Speaker 4: It is our number two and it is Jeff Legwald.
- 0:33Speaker 4: Time as the Broncos one to o in the preseason
- 0:37Speaker 4: before the Packers coming up next Sunday. Uh we head

- 0:51Speaker 1: Leggy. What's cracking man?
- 0:53Speaker 5: I'm great. How are you guys?
- 0:55Speaker 4: We're doing quite well, Leggy. Preseason game number one, the
- 1:00Speaker 4: three quarterbacks combine to put up a very efficient twenty
- 1:05Speaker 4: nine to forty one two seventy nine. There was a touchdown,
- 1:08Speaker 4: there was an interception, and there was thirty four points
- 1:13Speaker 4: that were scored in that game. The Broncos didn't run
- 1:17Speaker 4: the ball super efficiently, but still put thirty eight carries
- 1:21Speaker 4: out there when it was all said and done, put
- 1:24Speaker 4: yourself in the shoes of Sean Payton here for just
- 1:28Speaker 4: a moment. How would you be feeling about that game
- 1:31Speaker 4: if you're the Broncos head coach.
- 1:34Speaker 5: Well, I think there's two levels too it. I think
- 1:36Speaker 5: because you saw fairly consistent play from all three quarterbacks,
- 1:42Speaker 5: including Bonis and Zach Wilson. Especially those two especially, was
- 1:49Speaker 5: proof that they had spent a little more practice time
- 1:52Speaker 5: than a veteran team. Like if he had a veteran quarterback,
- 1:57Speaker 5: a long time starter, they probably wouldn't have spent as
- 2:02Speaker 5: much time on the Colts for the preseason opener as
- 2:05Speaker 5: they did last week. They had a full practice and
- 2:09Speaker 5: the Saturday walkthrough was totally devoted to the Colts, So
- 2:13Speaker 5: that that's a little more than you would if you
- 2:16Speaker 5: had a veteran QB and an established team. So he
- 2:20Speaker 5: he got the results from that effort that they wanted, certainly.
- 2:25Speaker 5: But I think you know, the three penalties on the
- 2:28Speaker 5: opening drive, uh, you know, they had a they had
- 2:32Speaker 5: they put the ball on the ground a couple of times,
- 2:34Speaker 5: one of them returned for a touchdown, and I think
- 2:38Speaker 5: ultimately you could see that you just don't tackle at
- 2:43Speaker 5: full speed very often. I mean, just the number of
- 2:46Speaker 5: times the ball was dislodged all the way or even
- 2:50Speaker 5: a little bit was kind of proof everybody was getting
- 2:53Speaker 5: ready or getting used to the full scale football Again.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Jeff, how do you grade everybody out? How do you
- 3:03Speaker 3: feel like every obviously you know this town well enough.
- 3:05Speaker 3: I mean, I think all three quarterbacks showed well enough
- 3:08Speaker 3: for themselves. Didham did have to go against the first
- 3:10Speaker 3: team and you know, unfortunately had to deal with the
- 3:13Speaker 3: fumble that or an interception that really had none nothing
- 3:16Speaker 3: to do with him.
- 3:18Speaker 1: How would you grade all three.
- 3:19Speaker 5: Guys, That's what I mean. And you could tell they
- 3:23Speaker 5: spent a lot of time on the colts because all
- 3:26Speaker 5: three guys were very, very efficient, and you know, they
- 3:30Speaker 5: were very cognizant of getting the ball out of bow
- 3:33Speaker 5: Nicks's hands, and he did what he should do. You know,
- 3:36Speaker 5: he he handled his business the way they wanted him to,
- 3:39Speaker 5: which is you know, I think ultimately he continues to
- 3:45Speaker 5: be on track to be the announced starter at some point.
- 3:48Speaker 5: But I just think the efficiency from all three guys
- 3:53Speaker 5: was proof that they've they've handled the installation pretty well overall.
- 3:59Speaker 5: In camp and that they spent a lot of time
- 4:03Speaker 5: making sure that, you know, all three quarterbacks would have
- 4:08Speaker 5: a comfort level going into the Colts game. And you
- 4:12Speaker 5: know he's already said Nix is getting the start against
- 4:16Speaker 5: the Packers, and he did as promise Sunday as well,
- 4:21Speaker 5: which is he got bow Nicks in for a handful
- 4:24Speaker 5: of plays with the with the starting offense, even if
- 4:28Speaker 5: that meant taking Stidham out of the game, you know,
- 4:31Speaker 5: after an interception that wasn't his fault.
- 4:34Speaker 3: All right, let me rephrase this. Should fans be excited
- 4:37Speaker 3: by what they saw? I guess so what I'm picking
- 4:39Speaker 3: up in code from you when you said they spent
- 4:41Speaker 3: time on the Colts, you know you normally don't in
- 4:45Speaker 3: the preseason. What level of excitement should we have for
- 4:48Speaker 3: what we got a witness here, Jeff. We saw some
- 4:50Speaker 3: good quarterback performances. I feel like, do you need a
- 4:53Speaker 3: temperate a bit?
- 4:54Speaker 1: Is my question?
- 4:55Speaker 5: We always need to temper it a bit. I mean,
- 4:57Speaker 5: you know, I he played probably as well as they
- 5:03Speaker 5: Bo Nicks I'm talking about, played as well as they
- 5:07Speaker 5: probably hoped going into the game. You know, his first
- 5:11Speaker 5: real game experience in the NFL, and he showed when
- 5:16Speaker 5: he's prepared, the moment wasn't too big for him. But
- 5:20Speaker 5: defensively he didn't see he didn't face that much. So
- 5:24Speaker 5: he should be efficient, He should be good with the football.
- 5:29Speaker 5: I mean, good things should happen with the talent level
- 5:33Speaker 5: he has. So he did his part and that is
- 5:36Speaker 5: a good good thing for him and ultimately the Broncos,
- 5:40Speaker 5: because I think they want him to be the starter.
- 5:43Speaker 5: But if you're gonna sit and pretend that's how it
- 5:47Speaker 5: would be in a regular season game, that's the part
- 5:50Speaker 5: I think, you know, hold off a little bit and
- 5:54Speaker 5: wait and see, and if he plays that efficiently Sunday,
- 5:58Speaker 5: I think they will name him the startup.
- 6:01Speaker 4: I think what Jeff is trying to say is, hey,
- 6:03Speaker 4: they're gonna face better players that are actually game planned
- 6:06Speaker 4: just for him.
- 6:08Speaker 1: But that's a very good first start.
- 6:09Speaker 4: He did everything that was asked of him quite beautifully
- 6:13Speaker 4: in that game. I think I'm translating you correctly here,
- 6:15Speaker 4: Jeff Well.
- 6:17Speaker 5: I mean, I hope i'm clear. You know, I don't
- 6:19Speaker 5: want to temper people in enthusiasm for life, liberty and
- 6:23Speaker 5: the pursuit of winning, but.
- 6:26Speaker 1: And the pursuit of touchdowns.
- 6:28Speaker 3: Well, but in frankly, though, Jeff I was pretty happy
- 6:30Speaker 3: with what I thought Wilson did too. I find Wilson intriguing.
- 6:34Speaker 5: I think the fact all three guys played really well.
- 6:39Speaker 5: I mean again, Stinham's got a big interception on his
- 6:43Speaker 5: passer rating and all that, but you know that was
- 6:46Speaker 5: a perfectly thrown ball and just a little swing wheel
- 6:51Speaker 5: route type play. So but all all three guys played well.
- 6:56Speaker 5: And to me, that's what after last year's offense, some
- 7:00Speaker 5: struggles from time to time, I think that's what people should,
- 7:05Speaker 5: you know, grasp onto out of this and that bon Nicks, Yeah,
- 7:08Speaker 5: and his introduction to the NFL went about as well
- 7:12Speaker 5: as the Broncos could hope and want it to.
- 7:16Speaker 4: Jeff Legwald with us on a Monday afternoon. As always,
- 7:19Speaker 4: Jeff Legwald's appearance is brought to you by the International
- 7:22Speaker 4: Brotherhood of Electrical Workers I E B I B e W.
- 7:25Speaker 4: I'm gonna try that again ib W Local sixty eight
- 7:30Speaker 4: start with a job, end with a career. Leggy is
- 7:34Speaker 4: one specific note on bone Knicks, the fumbled exchange, and
- 7:41Speaker 4: it's not the first time that we have seen Bow
- 7:43Speaker 4: have a little bit of a trouble working under center.
- 7:45Speaker 4: He didn't do a ton of that when he was
- 7:48Speaker 4: at Oregon. Is there the possibility the Broncos could try
- 7:53Speaker 4: to taylor things more to get Nicks into the shotgun
- 7:57Speaker 4: more often, or is that something where there's gonna be
- 7:59Speaker 4: an expectation he's got to get better, he has to
- 8:02Speaker 4: develop that skill set.
- 8:05Speaker 5: Yeah, and I think both are true. They've they've catered
- 8:09Speaker 5: things in practice for I believe him and the other
- 8:14Speaker 5: two guys have had to do it as well because
- 8:17Speaker 5: of that. But they've been in the pistol and shotgun
- 8:20Speaker 5: in more situations in this camp than they would have
- 8:23Speaker 5: been last year. But that said, you know, yes, that's true,
- 8:29Speaker 5: but he will have to function under center, and that exchanged.
- 8:33Speaker 5: You know, you could tell from the step that was
- 8:35Speaker 5: going to be a play action and I think he
- 8:38Speaker 5: was leaning to sort of get out. And the footwork
- 8:42Speaker 5: on play action is always sort of more choreographed than
- 8:48Speaker 5: we might think. Sometimes there is a step pattern you've
- 8:52Speaker 5: got to hit for it to go right. But I
- 8:55Speaker 5: think I recognize the formation and have seen it then.
- 9:00Speaker 5: It looked to me when I slowed it down later
- 9:03Speaker 5: that he was leaning sort of left when he came out,
- 9:06Speaker 5: and that tells me it was a little play action
- 9:08Speaker 5: play all right.
- 9:10Speaker 1: The running back room.
- 9:11Speaker 3: I know we've concentrated a lot on the receivers in
- 9:14Speaker 3: the passing game for good reason. You know this town works, Jeff, Jeff.
- 9:17Speaker 3: It feels to me like they've got a lot of
- 9:19Speaker 3: good options at the running back position, which you've been
- 9:21Speaker 3: talking about for the last two or three weeks. Ultimately,
- 9:25Speaker 3: do you think they make a tough decision there? How
- 9:28Speaker 3: do you think this will shake out? Even Tyler Baty
- 9:30Speaker 3: looked pretty good.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Now. I harken back to Xavier Oman in Chicago. I
- 9:35Speaker 1: think back in.
- 9:36Speaker 3: Twenty twelve there, Jeff, where he had a pretty good
- 9:39Speaker 3: first preseason game. Then we never heard from him again.
- 9:41Speaker 3: So I'm not trying to do that to our guy,
- 9:43Speaker 3: Tyler Batty. But how tough are the decisions in the
- 9:45Speaker 3: running back room gonna be?
- 9:46Speaker 4: Didn't know we were gonna get a Xavier Old I
- 9:48Speaker 4: will never forget Jeff knows.
- 9:50Speaker 1: Jeff.
- 9:50Speaker 3: Jeff was on my show as I was like, Oh,
- 9:52Speaker 3: this x guy's got something just like calm.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Down, Timmy.
- 9:57Speaker 3: So you're gonna give me a calm down Timmy to
- 9:59Speaker 3: the running back?
- 10:01Speaker 5: No, you know, I actually I will tell you they
- 10:03Speaker 5: they've always liked Tyler Babes, so you know, you're not
- 10:07Speaker 5: more excited than they are probably about him. They've always
- 10:10Speaker 5: liked them. I think ultimately, uh, before they make a
- 10:16Speaker 5: tough decision, they may shop a guy and see if
- 10:18Speaker 5: there's interest out there in their bed. You know, maybe
- 10:22Speaker 5: maybe that's p Ryan. I don't know, but they can't
- 10:27Speaker 5: keep all of those guys, and if they only keep
- 10:31Speaker 5: three like last year, then they're they're cutting at least
- 10:34Speaker 5: two that have looked pretty good in camp. So uh,
- 10:39Speaker 5: that and receiver I think at the back end of
- 10:42Speaker 5: the of the choices are going to be the most
- 10:45Speaker 5: difficult cuts because if they keep extra guys there, you know,
- 10:50Speaker 5: the the scales slip and you know that cost them
- 10:55Speaker 5: a spot somewhere else on the depth chart. And I
- 10:58Speaker 5: will add, you know, because of Quinn Bailey's injury, they
- 11:02Speaker 5: may have to keep an extra offensive lineman like.
- 11:05Speaker 4: He's speaking of samaj p Ryan. When you great a player,
- 11:09Speaker 4: I don't you know. I'm assuming you you worked maybe
- 11:12Speaker 4: like an A through F system, maybe a one through ten,
- 11:14Speaker 4: I don't know, four stars like it's Ciskel and Ebert.
- 11:17Speaker 4: I have no idea, Uh, two thumbs up, thumbs down.
- 11:20Speaker 4: I don't know, but here's what I need to know, Jeff,
- 11:22Speaker 4: is the the the Stidham interception off the hands of
- 11:27Speaker 4: Samaj p Ryan in which he then got up and
- 11:30Speaker 4: missed the tackle, in which he then got up again
- 11:33Speaker 4: and then ran into his own teammate and injured him.
- 11:37Speaker 1: Is it Is it.
- 11:37Speaker 4: Possible to be graded lower on a single down than
- 11:41Speaker 4: Samaj p Ryan was on that play?
- 11:44Speaker 5: That was a tough That was a tough few moments
- 11:47Speaker 5: at the office, uh for him. You know, obviously the
- 11:51Speaker 5: friendly fire hit, so to speak, is not you know,
- 11:56Speaker 5: they're gonna be sort of mad that happened, but they're
- 11:59Speaker 5: not gonna like bla guy if he's making an effort.
- 12:02Speaker 5: But you know, I just think, you know, potentially it'll
- 12:10Speaker 5: be a tough call because he plays so much special
- 12:13Speaker 5: teams and I don't think people should ever underestimate how
- 12:18Speaker 5: much pass protection means in the running back world on
- 12:22Speaker 5: third down, and he is by far the best of
- 12:25Speaker 5: the backs at that right now. And if that's the
- 12:30Speaker 5: case when they're cutting the roster down, that's what makes
- 12:34Speaker 5: it a tough call about him. Is you lose a
- 12:38Speaker 5: sure thing on third down? In terms of pass protection,
- 12:41Speaker 5: he rarely makes a mistake and missed blocks by running
- 12:46Speaker 5: backs are often the biggest hits on quarterbacks, and that
- 12:50Speaker 5: is a big, big issue in the in the running
- 12:53Speaker 5: back decision. And I don't think even they know how
- 12:57Speaker 5: they would, you know, how it would all come out
- 13:00Speaker 5: when they do have to make a call on that.
- 13:03Speaker 4: Jeff Legwald, everybody, he's with us every Monday and Friday
