- 0:00Speaker 1: Coach Daly, what do you take from now two games in,
- 0:02Speaker 1: or exhibition season, with your team? We like what you see.
- 0:05Speaker 1: What needs improvement? Take it from there.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Well, a lot of things need improvement, but I think
- 0:12Speaker 2: from last week to this week, we've made some strides. Tonight,
- 0:15Speaker 2: we shot the ball a lot better. I thought we
- 0:17Speaker 2: were pretty physical around the glass, although we were out-rebounded.
- 0:22Speaker 2: But a lot of good things. We didn't play our
- 0:26Speaker 2: best game, which obviously October 19th, you're not going to,
- 0:29Speaker 2: but It was a good test, and it was an exhibition.
- 0:33Speaker 2: It wasn't a national championship, although sometimes when you play
- 0:36Speaker 2: teams like Texas with that reputation, you can get like that.
- 0:40Speaker 2: But I thought we handled everything pretty well. The crowd
- 0:43Speaker 2: was terrific. I'm really impressed that on a Monday night
- 0:46Speaker 2: you have 10,000 people come into Hartford to come watch
- 0:49Speaker 2: us play. So we really appreciate that.
- 0:51Speaker 1: And I think the crowd did enjoy the game because it, yes,
- 0:55Speaker 1: an exhibition, but it was, I'm going to put in quotes,
- 0:57Speaker 1: friendly competition. But yet the players were under.
- 1:00Speaker 2: There was nothing friendly about that. Exactly.
- 1:03Speaker 1: And I think, you know, knowing that you were going
- 1:06Speaker 1: against an opponent that had size, athleticism, and the quickness,
- 1:09Speaker 1: and that the pressure they put on defensively, your team
- 1:12Speaker 1: seemed to respond well. At times you have to give.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Them a little bit. Well, we turned the ball over
- 1:16Speaker 2: a lot. We had 11 turnovers in the first half.
- 1:19Speaker 2: I don't know what we finished with. Finished with 17.
- 1:23Speaker 2: So it was either we were scoring or we were
- 1:25Speaker 2: turning it over. So we need to, you know, take better...
- 1:29Speaker 2: care of the basketball. Because when we run our stuff
- 1:32Speaker 2: and we take care of the ball, then we can
- 1:35Speaker 2: get shots and we can put points on the board.
- 1:37Speaker 2: But overall, I thought it was a good test. The
- 1:42Speaker 2: kids like to... They're tired of beating up on each
- 1:45Speaker 2: other or our practice players. So it was nice to
- 1:48Speaker 2: be able to be in a game environment at home.
- 1:50Speaker 2: So it was a good test.
- 1:54Speaker 1: And the third quarter, again, seemed to be where your team...
- 1:59Speaker 1: lengthens a little bit that they responded and maybe you
- 2:03Speaker 1: know Texas struggled a little bit from their shooting and
- 2:05Speaker 1: not sure if that was defense or they're missing.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Probably a little bit of both uh I thought I
- 2:10Speaker 2: thought we converted a lot more we didn't turn the
- 2:13Speaker 2: ball as much over as much in the third quarter
- 2:15Speaker 2: as we had in the whole first half so having
- 2:18Speaker 2: those opportunities and and being a pretty good shooting team
- 2:22Speaker 2: I think that's where we were able to and then
- 2:23Speaker 2: we were I thought on the defensive end in the
- 2:26Speaker 2: third quarter we did a much better job. Maddie Booker
- 2:29Speaker 2: is a really good player, and she can get her
- 2:33Speaker 2: shot off just about against anybody, and she was shooting
- 2:35Speaker 2: up over us. But we made it hard for her,
- 2:39Speaker 2: and she had to work for her points, and I
- 2:41Speaker 2: thought we did a pretty good job overall with that.
- 2:44Speaker 2: But you're not going to keep someone like Madison Booker scoreless,
- 2:48Speaker 2: so you have to make her work and then take
- 2:51Speaker 2: advantage of, And we got her in foul trouble, so
- 2:53Speaker 2: that's probably the best way to defend a really good
- 2:56Speaker 2: player is to get them in foul trouble, then they're
- 2:58Speaker 2: on the bench.
- 2:59Speaker 1: So how do you feel the freshmen, right now it seems,
- 3:02Speaker 1: Vokoso and Popovich, you know, having big roles and they're
- 3:07Speaker 1: coming in. They seem to be adapting well, understanding the
- 3:09Speaker 1: game is, you know, more to improve, but playing well
- 3:13Speaker 1: among the players returning.
- 3:14Speaker 2: You can't really say enough about Yo. That's what we
- 3:18Speaker 2: call her. Tough. She just, she's very steady. Like, she
- 3:24Speaker 2: doesn't get too excited and doesn't get too low. She's
- 3:28Speaker 2: just very steady. Made a lot of big shots. We've
- 3:31Speaker 2: got to work on the travel because she, you know,
- 3:33Speaker 2: gets a little, her feet get happy and they've called
- 3:36Speaker 2: a couple, I think she had four of them in
- 3:37Speaker 2: the first half. But, you know, I couldn't be more
- 3:40Speaker 2: impressed with how she's handled that. And she would handle
- 3:43Speaker 2: it the same way if she was coming off the
- 3:45Speaker 2: bench or whether she starts. She's just, that's her temperament.
- 3:48Speaker 2: And Olivia, you know, I think, Welcome to the real world.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Having a game like she did against Syracuse and then
- 3:54Speaker 2: having a game like today, didn't play poorly, just didn't score.
- 3:59Speaker 2: It's much more physical in today's game. The post players
- 4:02Speaker 2: were much bigger and much more aggressive. So part of
- 4:06Speaker 2: the learning process, as you mentioned, is understanding how you
- 4:09Speaker 2: have to play through that and how you have to
- 4:11Speaker 2: use that to your advantage. So I think they both
- 4:14Speaker 2: gained something from playing in tonight's game.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Well, I know you as coaches are looking for everything,
- 4:19Speaker 1: but the fans, I think, had a real treat tonight, too,
- 4:21Speaker 1: as you mentioned. So thank you. And we'll see you Sunday,
- 4:26Speaker 1: I think.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Yes, Sunday.
- 4:27Speaker 1: All right. Thanks, Coach. Thank you.
