- 0:01Hi, everybody, and welcome back to the show.
- 0:03In today's episode, we'll talk about Spacex's renewed vigor in
- 0:07rocket testing at Boca Chica, Texas, and how federal
- 0:10regulators are impacting its schedule.
- 0:13On the one hand, SpaceX has been working diligently on Starship's
- 0:17second test flight even as it encounters regulatory delays.
- 0:20And on the other, it has to clear some regulatory hurdles
- 0:23with the Federal Aviation Administration and the Fish and
- 0:26Wildlife Service, the FWS. But according to the Coast
- 0:29Guard, Mariners have been warned about rocket launch activities
- 0:33near Boca Chica Beach, slated for early November.
- 0:37The notice, though not mentioning SpaceX by name,
- 0:40highlights scheduled rocket launching activities that could
- 0:44cause navigational issues due to quote, free falling debris.
- 0:49This hints at a potential date for Spacex's next Starship test
- 0:53flight. Another angle of the regulatory
- 0:55tail is Spacex's public disagreements with the FAA after
- 0:59a contentious Senate hearing, SpaceX and other space companies
- 1:02bemoan the FAA's inadequacies, particularly regarding their
- 1:06inability to expediently handle licensing operations.
- 1:10As part of this waiting game, the Fish and Wildlife Service
- 1:13officials have recently visited the Boca Chica test site,
- 1:16indicating that regulatory evaluations are in progress now.
- 1:20SpaceX hasn't been idly waiting by, however.
- 1:23Recent tests involve a second stage Starship that aim to
- 1:26validate a flight like startup sequence for its D orbit burn.
- 1:31And just today they did a full wet dress rehearsal of a fully
- 1:36stacked Starship which will be the IFT to ship and booster that
- 1:42will hopefully separate this time properly and make it to a
- 1:47substantial orbit. Now these tests are vital for
- 1:50SpaceX to make strides in their ambitious lunar landing projects
- 1:55with NASA for the Artemis 3 missions and going forward.
- 1:59Now let's switch a little bit here to another significant
- 2:02development in the space industry, NASA's challenge with
- 2:05samples from an asteroid. NASA's curation team for the
- 2:08Osiris Rex mission is experiencing some difficulties
- 2:12in opening the tag Sam head, which contains the bulk of the
- 2:15asteroid sample. This has led to innovative
- 2:18problem solving as the team has been working on new methods to
- 2:22remove the fasteners on the tag Sam head that currently can't be
- 2:26opened with the existing tools, and the difficulty also pertains
- 2:30to keeping the sample in pristine condition during this
- 2:33extraction process. However, despite these
- 2:35challenges, there's some good news.
- 2:38NASA has already managed to extract a quantity of the
- 2:40material that exceeds the mission's goal, and early
- 2:44analysis also shows a high presence of carbon and water
- 2:48molecules, underlining the mission significance.
- 2:51And the Osiris Rex mission has had its highs and its lows since
- 2:54its 2016 launch. And after reaching the asteroid
- 2:58Bendu in 2018 and collecting samples of 2020, the mission now
- 3:01faces a seemingly minor but critical obstacle.
- 3:05But with the sample exceeding mission goals, the prospects are
- 3:08promising. Now let's head over to our red
- 3:12neighbor, Mars, where NASA's ambitions to bring back samples
- 3:16from the Red Planet are hitting some serious bumps.
- 3:20An independent review board recently questioned the budget
- 3:22and schedule of the Mars sample return mission, calling them
- 3:26unrealistic. In light of this, NASA is trying
- 3:29to find alternative ways to make the mission happen.
- 3:32It's now focused on re evaluating a strategy, with a
- 3:35new team aiming to come up with a revised mission architecture
- 3:38by March of 2024. Now, this might include
- 3:42launching the Lander and orbiter separately, or even offloading
- 3:46some responsibilities to the European Space Agency.
- 3:49And one of the suggested ways to cut costs involves reducing the
- 3:53quantity of the Mars samples. A smaller sample would mean a
- 3:57smaller container and consequently a smaller
- 4:00spacecraft, which could help reign in the escalating costs.
- 4:04And despite the discouraging review, the mission's scientific
- 4:07importance has been strongly emphasized.
- 4:09The mission could revolutionize our understanding of Mars and by
- 4:12extension, the history of our own solar system, so NASA is
- 4:17committed to finding a path forward for this mission.
- 4:20Now, the financial aspects of these missions can't be ignored
- 4:23either. The Mars sample Return mission
- 4:26alone is expected to cost between 8 billion and $11
- 4:29billion, far more than initially estimated.
- 4:33NASA had requested 949.3 million for the MSR mission for 2024,
- 4:39and even that isn't sufficient. These financial challenges are
- 4:43pushing NASA to rethink its strategies.
- 4:45Both the MSR mission and SpaceX, a Starship project, underline
- 4:48how budget constraints and regulatory frameworks are often
- 4:52as challenging as a scientific and technical hurdles involved.
- 4:56Now the need for increased funding has become a significant
- 4:58focus. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson
- 5:01has stated that an additional $500 million spread across 2
- 5:05fiscal years would be necessary to keep the Mars mission on
- 5:09track. And the take away here is the
- 5:11space exploration, while pushing the boundaries of scientific
- 5:14understanding, is heavily tethered to terrestrial
- 5:17budgetary realities. Now, as we've seen today, the
- 5:20future of space exploration eggs not just on scientific ingenuity
- 5:25but also on the ability to navigate regulatory and
- 5:28financial hurdles. Whether it's Spacex's next
- 5:31Starship test flight or NASA's plans to bring back samples from
- 5:34Mars, red tape and dollar signs are common obstacles.
- 5:38It's an intricate web that these organizations must reverse,
- 5:42keeping innovation at the forefront while adhering to
- 5:44guidelines and working with financial constraints.
- 5:47Despite these challenges, both SpaceX and NASA remain committed
- 5:51to their huge missions, mostly Mars missions, continuously
- 5:55adapting and finding new paths to make their ambitious projects
- 5:58into a reality and to move humanity forward.
