- 1:30SPEAKER_03: Hello and welcome to the Overclocked Remix Podcast, the best way to get OCR news and new music while flying through an asteroid field.
- 1:39SPEAKER_03: This is episode number 16, which is the one that ditches all the pretenses of being an RPG, but it does have a dog.
- 1:46SPEAKER_03: Wait, no, that's Final Fantasy.
- 1:48SPEAKER_03: Sorry.
- 1:49SPEAKER_03: My name is Zack, and at one point I considered 15 frames per second to be a perfectly acceptable frame rate for Polygonal 3D on a console.
- 1:59SPEAKER_03: This month we are celebrating the release of the newest overclocked remix album, Star Fox, Double Wing Damage, and there was much rejoicing.
- 2:09SPEAKER_03: I've always been a fan of the Star Fox series, although I have to admit, I still think the first two are the best two.
- 2:16SPEAKER_03: Anyone who has listened to the pod before knows that I'm a big schmuck guy.
- 2:20SPEAKER_03: And what is Star Fox if not a 3D schmuck?
- 2:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I I know.
- 2:24SPEAKER_03: People like to call the genre something like on Rails Shooter, but why?
- 2:31SPEAKER_03: Like if we decided to call 3D platformers jumping with camera or something.
- 2:36SPEAKER_03: Just call it a schmuck.
- 2:38SPEAKER_03: Well, anyway, this isn't the place to rant about genre mislabeling, but this is the place for news about overclocked remixes.
- 2:46SPEAKER_03: So let's do that.
- 2:48SPEAKER_03: Our intro music this month was God Speed by the Wingless from Skype.
- 4:12SPEAKER_03: The Voodoo Queen is recruiting for a new album project.
- 4:15SPEAKER_03: A three-disc album, tentatively called Hot and Cold, celebrating everyone's favorite elemental biome VGM.
- 4:23SPEAKER_03: We're gonna have a hot disc with nothing but your lava levels and your deserts, etc.
- 4:29SPEAKER_03: And we're gonna have a cold disc with nothing but your remixes of Ice Cap from Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
- 4:34SPEAKER_03: Well, probably.
- 4:36SPEAKER_03: It's open to ice level music from any game, but we all know it's gonna end up being mostly Ice Cap.
- 4:42SPEAKER_03: And what's Disc 3?
- 4:44SPEAKER_03: Well, that's the mixing tap of the album for your hot and cold mashups.
- 4:49SPEAKER_03: There is something of a catch, of course, there's always a catch.
- 4:53SPEAKER_03: All the hot tracks have to be done in a chill-out style.
- 4:58SPEAKER_03: Smooth jazz, low-fi hip-hop, synthwave, and correspondingly, all the cold tracks have to be action-packed with high-energy genres like metal, DD, industrial, you get the drift.
- 5:11SPEAKER_03: And grana drift.
- 5:13SPEAKER_03: That was an iceberg.
- 5:15SPEAKER_03: Now what about disc three?
- 5:17SPEAKER_03: Well, mashup tracks have to have mashup genres.
- 5:20SPEAKER_03: I'm looking forward to an SMB1 Bowser's Castle slash SMB3 Iceland jazz metal mashup.
- 5:30SPEAKER_03: In other news, that is coming pretty soon, actually, I will be at VGMCon in Minneapolis to do the podcast live for both of my adoring fans.
- 5:40SPEAKER_03: Schedule is not set in stone yet, but as of right now, I believe I'm scheduled for Saturday, the 18th of April, at 1 p.m.
- 5:50SPEAKER_03: Come out and say hi.
- 5:52SPEAKER_03: I'll also just be wandering around in an OCR hoodie, so feel free to say hi if you see me.
- 5:59SPEAKER_03: Of course, an OCR hoodie doesn't uniquely identify me, but that's okay.
- 6:03SPEAKER_03: I think as a general policy, you should say hi if you see someone in an OCR hoodie.
- 25:25SPEAKER_03: That was Adeptile Echoes by Cinnamon Stone from Genshin Impact.
- 25:31SPEAKER_03: After that was Hype Frame Dreams by ridiculously Garrett from Mario Kart 64.
- 25:38SPEAKER_03: After that was Sidon's Wet Dream.
- 25:42SPEAKER_03: Boy, that is a good phrase I never want to say again.
- 25:44SPEAKER_03: By Great and Mozilla from The Legend of Zelda, Breath of the Wild.
- 25:49SPEAKER_03: And then rounding up the blood, we had Heroes of the Tempest by Jane Wake, Marbeliana, and Minus World from Fire Emblem Heroes.
- 26:03SPEAKER_03: Probably never going to play Genji Impact at this point.
- 26:07SPEAKER_03: But I really should give the OSD a listen.
- 26:09SPEAKER_03: And a quick note on crediting.
- 26:11SPEAKER_03: While this is Cinnamon Stone's first remix as Cinnamon Stone, you know and love the component parts of Cinnamon Stone as Rocos and Kevin CP.
- 26:22SPEAKER_03: Moving on, props to ridiculously Garrett for really bringing out the smooth jazz of Mario Kart 64.
- 26:29SPEAKER_03: That OST is such a departure from the original game, which, for lack of a better word, just sounds very Mario.
- 26:37SPEAKER_03: And then here's the N64 with a whole new MK sound.
- 26:41SPEAKER_03: Of course, after that was the very hard-hitting Sidon's theme and Zora's theme Electronica Mix, which I just noticed is tagged on OCR as workout.
- 26:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it'll get your body moving.
- 26:54SPEAKER_03: That Zora's domain groove in particular has like a real Sonic CD OST sound to it.
- 27:00SPEAKER_03: And then last but not least, Fire Emblem Progmetal, which you already know I love.
- 27:06SPEAKER_03: I don't have to say anything else, that's my jam.
- 45:19SPEAKER_03: And rounding off the Dark Star by Zaleft from Star Fox.
- 45:25SPEAKER_03: So we opened up here with Minecraft with just a lovely, extremely chill track.
- 45:30SPEAKER_03: Chilled, but also warped really captures the vibe of the Minecraft LSD.
- 45:36SPEAKER_03: Nice and mellow to make you forget that you just lost everything when a creeper blew you into lava.
- 45:41SPEAKER_03: And then for the next few tracks, we have a few tracks from the newly released album Star Fox Deviling Damage.
- 45:49SPEAKER_03: Which I'm gonna hold back talking about because that is the topic of our segment.
- 45:54SPEAKER_03: And it is, we call that foreshadowing.
- 59:42SPEAKER_03: After that was Weapon War by Gamer of the Winds, Yellow Pixel, and finally from Star Fox 64.
- 59:53SPEAKER_03: Finally we had trouble for anything.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_03: I need to be at a loss for words.
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_03: Electro Swing.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_03: Reminds me a lot of ND script of the Necker Dancer soundtrack, or the cave music from the more recent answer of the game.
- 1:00:36SPEAKER_03: But enough about that.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_03: Let's talk to Dark Laneworth, the director of Star Fox Double Wing Damage.
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_03: There was only a little cheating, but I'm not sure if you're not a little bit more.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_00: Okay, I'm actually uh looking up something on Google right now.
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_00: Because I kind of want to get the dates right.
- 1:02:08SPEAKER_00: Uh ah, yes.
- 1:02:09SPEAKER_00: December 11th, 1999.
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_00: Um, that's when it started from DJ Pretzel.
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_00: I think I found it sometime in 2000.
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_00: I couldn't tell you the month, but I know it was within the first year of them starting up because they only had like like maybe less than a hundred fracks remixes or something when I first know uh uh found them.
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_00: And I've just been kind of lurking around and enjoying them for for many, many years.
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_00: And uh so I kind of just stumbled across them one day and I just been hanging around ever since.
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_00: So that that's my OC remix story.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_00: But I'm sure you're probably wondering, you know, the whole director story.
- 1:02:54SPEAKER_03: I I am, actually.
- 1:02:56SPEAKER_03: Um yeah, my my OC remix story, very similar.
- 1:02:59SPEAKER_03: I think I I started a little later than you.
- 1:03:01SPEAKER_03: I think it was maybe 2001 when I found OC Remix, but yeah, similarly, I've been lurking for many, many years until I got involved recording myself for people to listen to.
- 1:03:15SPEAKER_03: Uh, which still feels a little surreal, I'll be honest.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_03: Um so yeah, how how did uh how did you get involved in directing an album?
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_00: How did I get involved?
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_00: I involved myself.
- 1:03:27SPEAKER_00: Is what how it worked.
- 1:03:29SPEAKER_00: Uh so uh as as albums were being introduced, starting with Memories of the Chozo, and then Donkey Kong Concert and Chrono uh trigger Chrono Symphony, and then it goes on and goes on.
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_00: Those are the first three I remember specifically as launching this whole OC remix album uh craze.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_00: And you know, album 10 went by 20, 30, album 40, album 50, and I'm just like, is is no one gonna do Skies of Arcadia?
- 1:03:58SPEAKER_00: Because I love this game, I love this the soundtrack, and clearly you also like Vice from uh Skies of Arcadia 2 with your profile picture.
- 1:04:06SPEAKER_03: Oh, most definitely.
- 1:04:08SPEAKER_03: On the old overclocked remix IRC, I went by Vice of Arcadia.
- 1:04:13SPEAKER_03: I I hung out there quite a lot.
- 1:04:16SPEAKER_03: Uh yeah, I I would still count Skies of Arcadia my all-time favorite game, and like you, I patiently sat there lurking on forums and IRC, just waiting for someone else to do an album.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_00: And I was like you.
- 1:04:32SPEAKER_00: I was waiting and waiting, and I was like, well, and I started noticing that not every single album was directed or uh managed by the same people, the same persons, and not all of them were staff at OCR, and I'm like, wait a minute.
- 1:04:47SPEAKER_00: Can anybody record or start up and direct one of these albums?
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_00: And so I started digging into the forms.
- 1:04:54SPEAKER_00: Uh at the times they were like, I think they were the bulletin boards at the time, but um I started looking into the project forms, started looking at the project um uh rules and and you know stuff that's laid out on how you're supposed to, you know, go through the whole process, but nowhere in any of that said that it had to be a specific type of person who was on OCR staff or that was known in the community.
- 1:05:17SPEAKER_00: Nothing.
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_00: And I was just like, well, I I'm I'll be like Thanos, fine, I'll do it myself.
- 1:05:25SPEAKER_00: Um and so I did a crazy, crazy uh tactic.
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_00: I went literally down the alphabetical list of all the members in the forum, and I looked at all the remixers I was familiar with over the years, and the ones I really wanted to see if they would join in on the album, and I literally just co-called them DM'd.
- 1:05:48SPEAKER_00: Just co called DM'd every single one, and surprisingly, so many people came back and agreed to it.
- 1:05:57SPEAKER_00: Now, not all of them, of course, who agreed eventually.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_00: Made it to the end because we eventually ultimately got only 36 tracks.
- 1:06:04SPEAKER_00: But um, you know, it was crazy having like 50, 60, 70 people agree and you know, be eager to be part of this uh album project.
- 1:06:13SPEAKER_00: And suddenly I was a director, suddenly I had to, you know, herd cats and make sure everybody was on task, and obviously that the number kind of dwindled down to 50s, 40s, 30s until we got got to our final our final track list and the final remixers who contributed.
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_00: But uh it was a it was a huge learning process.
- 1:06:34SPEAKER_00: And I once I finally got through the admin portion and I talked with the the you know DJ Pretzel and Lion Tamer, I think, was with him at that time.
- 1:06:43SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, we got it released three and a half years, almost four, since I first started cold calling DM folks.
- 1:06:52SPEAKER_00: And similar story, Jeff Force Gemini was another one I wanted, and I was just like, yeah, I'm not waiting for anybody.
- 1:06:56SPEAKER_00: As soon as I finished Guys Recaddy, I'm like, we're starting another one.
- 1:07:00SPEAKER_00: And so I did Jeff Force Gemini.
- 1:07:02SPEAKER_00: And that was when I set up the Discord server, which is now known affectionately as the Crack.
- 1:07:11SPEAKER_00: For those who do not know, it's called the Community Remix Album Collaborator, or Crack, affectionately.
- 1:07:19SPEAKER_00: Um but it was originally started specifically for the Jeff Force Gemini Miser Attacks album, just as an easier way of coordinating with all the people who were uh involved in it, so I didn't have to keep, you know, working with the DMs and the uh forms, which were very slow, and it would take sometimes days to weeks to get responses back, or even just people's emails, because a lot of people didn't want to, you know, part with their private emails and stuff.
- 1:07:47SPEAKER_00: So I was like, Discord is a good medium.
- 1:07:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and we just yeah, and any future uh albums I did after that has always been on uh the crack server.
- 1:07:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and now other people are using that same server to organize the albums that they're directing.
- 1:08:02SPEAKER_03: So it's it's really become, I think, a valuable resource for the community.
- 1:08:06SPEAKER_00: I I was just trying to help.
- 1:08:08SPEAKER_00: That's it.
- 1:08:10SPEAKER_00: You succeeded.
- 1:08:12SPEAKER_00: Thanks.
- 1:08:13SPEAKER_00: I I I hope it's useful to everybody.
- 1:08:16SPEAKER_00: That's what it was there for, for for helpful coordination.
- 1:08:20SPEAKER_03: Uh yeah, one thing I've I've definitely found uh since I started doing the podcast and like actually talking to people is uh man, uh the community is really responsive to uh to to good game music.
- 1:08:33SPEAKER_03: Like, this sounds stupid, right?
- 1:08:35SPEAKER_03: Like uh of course they are, but you know, uh you just put something out there like, hey, I'm doing a Skies of Arcadia album, and suddenly everyone goes, Oh yeah, that game had an amazing soundtrack.
- 1:08:46SPEAKER_03: Let's go.
- 1:08:47SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 1:08:48SPEAKER_00: I've I've just been blessed for for uh the amount of support and help I've been given to try and bring these albums to light.
- 1:08:56SPEAKER_03: Uh on that topic, uh, you know, uh one thing I wanted to get out of you is do you have any advice for people who might want to try their hand at directing an album other than just, you know, get started and start talking about it with people.
- 1:09:10SPEAKER_00: Don't quit.
- 1:09:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:09:13SPEAKER_00: That's I know that sounds pretty silly and obvious, but no, seriously.
- 1:09:17SPEAKER_00: I I've seen projects where people start with high aspirations, and then midway through, um, due to struggles or remixers or people who are participating either falling out or lagging behind due to real life problems, things like that.
- 1:09:33SPEAKER_00: Every album gets to like this lull, this down point of progress.
- 1:09:38SPEAKER_00: There's nothing much happening, and sometimes this is the weak point where it kind of can just be left by the wayside and forgotten about for a while, and then people were just like, is this still a thing?
- 1:09:50SPEAKER_00: Like, I don't even know anymore.
- 1:09:52SPEAKER_00: So definitely don't quit.
- 1:09:54SPEAKER_00: You have to stay on it, you have to stay on people.
- 1:09:57SPEAKER_00: Not to say be annoying and nagging, but you have to consistently come up with a schedule for yourself to reach out to each one of the people who is participating in your album.
- 1:10:10SPEAKER_00: Um, I tend to do once a month, typically.
- 1:10:13SPEAKER_00: And then, of course, as we get closer to the deadline, then it becomes twice a month and so on.
- 1:10:17SPEAKER_00: But I feel like that's a good medium so that you're not nagging completely, but you're also kindly reminding people you volunteered and you offered to participate and help out in the album.
- 1:10:28SPEAKER_00: I'm just here to remind you, hey, I'm just checking in.
- 1:10:31SPEAKER_00: Are you still good on that on that volunteer offer?
- 1:10:34SPEAKER_00: So, I mean, you're not they're not there, you know, under gun or something like that, and they're not getting paid, so if they want to leave, they can leave, but you're there just to, as I said, kind of hurt cats, make sure everybody's on task.
- 1:10:48SPEAKER_03: So, uh, let's pivot a little.
- 1:10:51SPEAKER_03: Uh tell me about uh Star Fox specifically.
- 1:10:56SPEAKER_03: Uh, what's what's your history with the series and uh uh what made you want to direct a Star Fox album?
- 1:11:03SPEAKER_00: Well, I have to back it up a little bit to the album that happened after Mizar attacks.
- 1:11:10SPEAKER_00: It was after I did two albums under my belt that Lion Tamer and DJ Pretzel themselves came to me with Jarito on the side because Dorito did express some interest in reviving a very old uh album that they've been trying to get off the ground, the Final Fantasy VIII album.
- 1:11:26SPEAKER_00: Ah, yes.
- 1:11:27SPEAKER_00: I don't know the whole story or the drama or the history behind it, and honestly, it doesn't really matter at this point.
- 1:11:32SPEAKER_00: Um, but the fact is, is they've been trying to, you know, get it back online and get it out there finally.
- 1:11:37SPEAKER_00: And Dorito's like, I would like to direct, but I don't want to do it alone because it's such a huge undertaking.
- 1:11:42SPEAKER_00: And so that's when they all came to me and like, hey, did you want to co-direct and really bring this home to the finish line?
- 1:11:47SPEAKER_00: And I was like, wow.
- 1:11:50SPEAKER_00: Heads of OCR coming to me.
- 1:11:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, sure.
- 1:11:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, let's go.
- 1:11:54SPEAKER_00: Um that and I love Final Fantasy VIII, it's one of my favorites.
- 1:11:58SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, and you know, I feel like at every point, every Final Fantasy has had an album project started by someone.
- 1:12:04SPEAKER_03: Like, how can how can you not?
- 1:12:05SPEAKER_03: Uh, and I I do remember Final Fantasy VII.
- 1:12:08SPEAKER_03: I I remember people talking about that for a long time.
- 1:12:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and uh Dorito had not it wasn't my idea, but Jorito had the the the good idea of having a hard deadline.
- 1:12:21SPEAKER_00: They're like, we're gonna open it up to anybody who's interested, but we're gonna have a full one-year deadline.
- 1:12:26SPEAKER_00: We get as many tracks as we can, and after the one-year deadline, we're done, and we can't we won't accept any more.
- 1:12:33SPEAKER_00: Well, that extended up to a year and a half deadline, but still, you know, we got 80 tracks.
- 1:12:38SPEAKER_00: We got I think this is that was the biggest OCR album up to date, right now, to date.
- 1:12:46SPEAKER_00: And and uh it was no surprise we made it that many people were just interested in in participating.
- 1:12:52SPEAKER_00: So maybe that our deadline actually worked.
- 1:12:54SPEAKER_00: Um, but it was because of this I I grew to have more rapport with a bunch of of Xers who have worked with me now on two to even three albums already by this point.
- 1:13:07SPEAKER_00: So I've I've at this point I guess I was been you know kind of getting kind of known in the community, which was a shock to me even then.
- 1:13:15SPEAKER_00: Um and they're just like we should totally do a Star Fox album.
- 1:13:19SPEAKER_00: Let's revive another dead album, let's do Star Fox, and and they're like, We've we'd love to have if you were the one to direct it and everything.
- 1:13:25SPEAKER_00: And so there was a lot of a lot of uh you know, you know, egging on and and kind of encouraging me to take it.
- 1:13:32SPEAKER_00: And I was kind of just like, oh no, we just finished this big Final Fantasy VIII album, and I'm not sure I'm ready.
- 1:13:36SPEAKER_00: And and then midway through the summer, I was just like, you know what?
- 1:13:41SPEAKER_00: YOLO, let's go.
- 1:13:43SPEAKER_00: Let's get let's do it.
- 1:13:45SPEAKER_00: Um the people are there, the interest is there, the the hype is at a high right now to get you know to get an album like Star Fox out finally out there.
- 1:13:54SPEAKER_00: I'm like, if I let it go for another week, year or two more, I mean it might die down and and the interest may have waned, and the people who were wanting to participate may have moved on.
- 1:14:06SPEAKER_00: So I was like, strike while the iron's hot, right?
- 1:14:10SPEAKER_00: So yeah, I did it.
- 1:14:12SPEAKER_00: I started it.
- 1:14:13SPEAKER_00: And uh, well, you saw the fruits of the labor.
- 1:14:16SPEAKER_00: It was it was uh two discs of 30 tracks, and every single one's a banger.
- 1:14:21SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, absolutely fantastic album.
- 1:14:24SPEAKER_03: And I have to say, uh the Star Fox series is I think a little under-remixed.
- 1:14:30SPEAKER_03: I think before this album there were maybe eight accepted Star Fox remixes across the entire series, like not a lot.
- 1:14:38SPEAKER_03: Um uh maybe, maybe 12?
- 1:14:41SPEAKER_03: I don't know, something in there.
- 1:14:42SPEAKER_03: So, you know, I think you've easily tripled the amount of Star Fox OCR content out there with this album.
- 1:14:49SPEAKER_00: And I'm glad.
- 1:14:52SPEAKER_03: Uh so you came into this, like, not specifically wanting to do a Star Fox album, but because someone else said, hey, we should do a Star Fox album.
- 1:15:00SPEAKER_03: Hey, you know who's good at directing albums.
- 1:15:04SPEAKER_00: It was specifically because a lot of people expressed that they wanted me to do it.
- 1:15:10SPEAKER_00: Like, specifically.
- 1:15:12SPEAKER_00: And that they liked working with me on the Final Fantasy VIII album.
- 1:15:16SPEAKER_00: And honestly, that kind of just I don't know, gave me that warm fuzzy feeling like, aww, like you you actually want me to do this.
- 1:15:24SPEAKER_00: Like, I don't have an issue doing with it, but in like me specifically, really.
- 1:15:28SPEAKER_00: Um, but yeah, I was just like, okay, well, I'll I'll promise you guys I'll I'll get this to the finish line, and and I did.
- 1:15:35SPEAKER_00: And you did.
- 1:15:37SPEAKER_03: Uh so uh so what's your history of with Star Fox in general then?
- 1:15:42SPEAKER_03: Like, have you just been a casual fan over the years, or do you have a particular fondness for the series?
- 1:15:48SPEAKER_00: It's more of a casual fan for me, not uh not a Skies of Arcadia or Jeff Force Gemini or something like that, but um I I was there back in the Super Nintendo days, uh playing the original Star Fox and everything, and then Nintendo 64, uh Star Fox 64 was actually one of the first two games I got for the system on Christmas one day.
- 1:16:08SPEAKER_00: It was Star Force 64 and Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time.
- 1:16:12SPEAKER_00: And those were like the first two I got for that system.
- 1:16:14SPEAKER_00: And I had a lot of fun there.
- 1:16:16SPEAKER_00: But the game that really kind of just I just fell in love with, and I guess it's just my own sensibilities, because I like Zelda, stuff like that, was probably Adventures.
- 1:16:24SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 1:16:25SPEAKER_03: And that's the one I've never that's the only Star Fox game I've never played.
- 1:16:30SPEAKER_00: It got so much flack during its time when it came out, but I think now in like the last five or so years, people are coming coming back around to it.
- 1:16:39SPEAKER_00: People are really kind of just like, hey, we gave you a bad shake the first time around, and they're appreciating it for what it is now.
- 1:16:45SPEAKER_00: So I like that.
- 1:16:46SPEAKER_03: I mean, generally speaking, Rare doesn't make bad games.
- 1:16:50SPEAKER_03: You know, I feel like uh one of the few studios where if I see their logo on a game box, I know, okay, that's this is at least like a B plus game.
- 1:17:01SPEAKER_00: Well, I'd say it's more of a an A minus.
- 1:17:06SPEAKER_00: Because it it's mo it's got a couple down points, but there's more up than there is down.
- 1:17:11SPEAKER_00: And uh no game is without flaws, but I've enjoyed myself every time I've gone back to replay it.
- 1:17:18SPEAKER_03: I will have to put it on the list and give it a play myself.
- 1:17:22SPEAKER_03: Um I I have always um I uh like you, I uh you know, I uh played the original Super Nintendo one, and I remember seeing the magazine screenshots and just being blown away.
- 1:17:35SPEAKER_03: Uh and I I felt um for Star Fox 64, of course, the graphics were really good.
- 1:17:41SPEAKER_03: Um you know, very impressive, uh very smooth, but they were just sort of like an upgrade of the original.
- 1:17:49SPEAKER_03: Like it wasn't-it wasn't the same as going from Mario World to Mario 64 or a link to the past to Zelda 64.
- 1:17:57SPEAKER_03: It was like three full polygonal 3D and now full polygonal 3D with more polygons.
- 1:18:04SPEAKER_03: Um what really impressed me about Star Fox 64 was the sound design.
- 1:18:09SPEAKER_03: You know, going from uh, you know, Falco sounds like uh to fully voiced lines uh always really impressed me.
- 1:18:20SPEAKER_00: And here's a little bit of uh I wouldn't say it's trivia, but more like uh wow, you named the album after that.
- 1:18:28SPEAKER_00: Do you know where we got double winged damage?
- 1:18:30SPEAKER_03: I mean, as I recall, this is a bad thing in the game, so I was gonna ask this question.
- 1:18:35SPEAKER_03: Where did you get the name?
- 1:18:37SPEAKER_00: It's actually from the original Star Fox for the Super Nintendo with the garble voices, and uh it was actually a line that was said by Falco.
- 1:18:46SPEAKER_00: I don't know exactly which level or when he says it, but it sounded like winged damage.
- 1:18:51SPEAKER_00: Ah it sounded like it sounded like double winged damage, and and it was my brother at the time, because we used to play games all together, uh, all the time together.
- 1:19:01SPEAKER_00: He's just like, isn't that what he's saying?
- 1:19:03SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, I guess.
- 1:19:04SPEAKER_00: He sounds like he's saying double winged damage, and that stuck with me for decades.
- 1:19:08SPEAKER_00: And then when it finally came time to like, well, what are you gonna name the the album?
- 1:19:11SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, I got just the thing, y'all.
- 1:19:15SPEAKER_03: Oh, that is so perfect.
- 1:19:18SPEAKER_03: Uh, and especially because you know, wing damage is a mechanic in the game.
- 1:19:21SPEAKER_03: So it makes sense, it hangs together.
- 1:19:24SPEAKER_03: Yes, so it was perfect.
- 1:19:26SPEAKER_03: Ha, that is perfect.
- 1:19:29SPEAKER_03: I feel like the Star Fox series has not only is it under-remixed, uh, or at least prior to this, was it under-remixed, I feel, because they've got great soundtracks, every single Star Fox game.
- 1:19:41SPEAKER_03: Um, but uh, I feel like Nintendo has really over the years ignored the fans of this particular series.
- 1:19:49SPEAKER_03: So uh I know there's a lot of people who, you know, just fell in love with Star Fox as a series and they'll take anything they can get because Nintendo's not giving it to them.
- 1:20:00SPEAKER_00: Uh well, I've noticed that Nintendo won't do something unless they know they can do something original with it.
- 1:20:07SPEAKER_00: Um unlike Capcom, where they'll just keep giving us, you know, Mega Man 18 or something like that, and they'll be just perfectly happy to do that.
- 1:20:15SPEAKER_00: But for Star Fox, I feel like they tried to do something different, or at least sub, you know, uh subsume an existing game, Dinosaur Planet, to make, you know, Star Fox adventures, and they saw the reception to that.
- 1:20:31SPEAKER_00: And they're just like, huh, okay, let's back up a little bit.
- 1:20:35SPEAKER_00: Let's try Star Fox uh uh Assault, where it's a mix of some new ideas, but also still, you know, shooter tactic things.
- 1:20:43SPEAKER_00: That didn't get a lot of reviews.
- 1:20:46SPEAKER_03: Which is a shame because I thought Assault was great.
- 1:20:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, then they did Star Fox Zero, which I feel like is more return to form, you know, where it's mainly on the rail shooter from my I haven't played it unfortunately because I don't have a Wii U and they never re-released it.
- 1:20:59SPEAKER_00: But I heard that that was like more of like kind of like Star 64, like they're going back to the rail shooter, and that just kind of is like a blip in the night.
- 1:21:05SPEAKER_00: Like nobody even, you know, much credence.
- 1:21:09SPEAKER_00: And then they had that command, Star Fox Command, which was for a mobile game, which nobody really touched outside of, you know, the country of origin.
- 1:21:16SPEAKER_00: So it's it feels like it feels like they're just like Nintendo is giving up, like, well, what do you all want?
- 1:21:22SPEAKER_00: Like, we gave you multiple different variations and you just don't want any of them, so we don't know what to do with the series.
- 1:21:28SPEAKER_00: So I think that's kind of where they're at.
- 1:21:30SPEAKER_00: Like, they don't want to start something unless they know it, of course, first off, it's gonna it's gonna sell.
- 1:21:35SPEAKER_00: And two, is it is it gonna be fun?
- 1:21:36SPEAKER_00: Is it gonna be something that people will want to play in the series?
- 1:21:40SPEAKER_00: And I think they're just this is my theory.
- 1:21:42SPEAKER_00: I think they're just at a quandary of what to do with the series.
- 1:21:46SPEAKER_00: There's yeah.
- 1:21:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah and I I I I do want to uh go on the record here and say Star Fox Zero was good.
- 1:21:54SPEAKER_03: Uh I it it I've seen a lot of you know negative uh not reviews, but negative discourse around the game.
- 1:22:02SPEAKER_03: Uh and I think that just sort of falls into people's general dissatisfaction with the Wii U.
- 1:22:08SPEAKER_03: Um But yeah, it was uh I would say that Star Fox Zero was a worthy entry in the series.
- 1:22:15SPEAKER_03: And anyone lucky enough to have a Wii U, ignore the hate, check it out for yourself.
- 1:22:21SPEAKER_03: It's a great game.
- 1:22:22SPEAKER_00: Well, if they release it on a system I got, I will definitely check it out.
- 1:22:25SPEAKER_03: Oh, most definitely.
- 1:22:26SPEAKER_03: Uh I'm I'm surprised they didn't eventually do all the Wii U games to the Switch, but.
- 1:22:32SPEAKER_00: They did a lot of games.
- 1:22:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's Nintendo.
- 1:22:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they just left out Star Fox.
- 1:22:36SPEAKER_00: I'm like, you got Donkey Kong Country returns, but you don't got Yeah, I right?
- 1:22:42SPEAKER_00: You got all your other first party games.
- 1:22:44SPEAKER_00: Come on, Nintendo.
- 1:22:46SPEAKER_03: So, uh I asked you to do a little homework, and that was just pick three tracks you want to talk about.
- 1:22:54SPEAKER_03: Uh, not for any particular reason.
- 1:22:56SPEAKER_03: I just uh wanted to see what your choices would be, and uh yeah, so what what you got for me?
- 1:23:04SPEAKER_00: Well, I kind of cheated a little bit.
- 1:23:05SPEAKER_00: It's gonna be five tracks, but two and fine with this.
- 1:23:09SPEAKER_00: Four of them are linked.
- 1:23:11SPEAKER_00: So two, two, and one.
- 1:23:12SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 1:23:13SPEAKER_00: Okay, okay.
- 1:23:14SPEAKER_00: This is fine.
- 1:23:15SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 1:23:16SPEAKER_00: So I will start with the Krizoa Palace tracks.
- 1:23:22SPEAKER_00: The it's disc one, track twelve, and disc two, track ten.
- 1:24:25SPEAKER_00: And I, as I said, Star Fox Adventures, that's why there's so many adventures tracks on these this album because I love it.
- 1:24:31SPEAKER_00: I love that song or that uh soundtrack and I love that game.
- 1:24:35SPEAKER_00: So I kind of pushed for a lot of uh adventures tracks.
- 1:24:39SPEAKER_00: So uh we were nearing the end of the year uh for the deadline before it got extended a little bit longer, and I was just like, oh my gosh, Grizzoa Palace, one of my favorite tunes, is still not claimed.
- 1:24:54SPEAKER_00: Nobody wants this.
- 1:24:56SPEAKER_00: And I actually blurted it out in public in the crack server.
- 1:25:00SPEAKER_00: I'm like, come on guys, this is like one of my favorite tracks.
- 1:25:03SPEAKER_00: Does nobody like this track?
- 1:25:04SPEAKER_00: Is it not good enough, you know?
- 1:25:06SPEAKER_00: And and those two stepped up and like, hey, we'll do it.
- 1:25:09SPEAKER_00: I'm like, hey, cool.
- 1:25:10SPEAKER_00: You two can uh do like a collaboration and make this awesome because I love both your tracks.
- 1:25:14SPEAKER_00: You got high, heavy, you know, heavy energy um that like that is their jam.
- 1:25:21SPEAKER_00: Like it's just high octane, heavy energy for every single track that either one of those remixers do.
- 1:25:26SPEAKER_00: And I was expecting something amazing from both of them together.
- 1:25:29SPEAKER_00: And they're like, nah, we're doing our separate ones.
- 1:25:32SPEAKER_00: We're doing two.
- 1:25:34SPEAKER_00: We're not gonna work together.
- 1:25:35SPEAKER_00: We're not gonna work together, we're gonna work against each other.
- 1:25:38SPEAKER_00: I'm like, what?
- 1:25:39SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah, we're gonna make it a competition.
- 1:25:41SPEAKER_00: Who can who can rock out the the the hardest on Krizoa Palace?
- 1:25:44SPEAKER_00: And I was just like, I'm okay with this.
- 1:25:49SPEAKER_00: I was like, you go compete all you want, you two.
- 1:25:54SPEAKER_00: And that's the reason why we have two of Krizoa Palace, because I put the call out and two people answered, and they wanted to work separately rather than together because they liked the competition.
- 1:26:07SPEAKER_00: Sure! I mean, why not?
- 1:26:10SPEAKER_03: Um, so that is actually uh something I meant to ask about earlier and forgot to.
- 1:26:15SPEAKER_03: Uh talk a little about the uh the the split between the discs, because each disc has a slightly different focus.
- 1:26:24SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 1:26:25SPEAKER_00: This actually came from Final Fantasy VIII, where I had a theming for every disc in for the Final Fantasy VIII album, where you know the first one was kind of like, you know, soft, smooth, calming tunes, and the second one was, you know, high octane, you know, get your feet on the dance floor sort of stuff.
- 1:26:43SPEAKER_00: Uh the third one was anything goes, don't care, just smorgasbored.
- 1:26:48SPEAKER_00: So that sort of thing was received very well by the fans and those who have listened to the Seeds of Pandora album.
- 1:26:57SPEAKER_03: I was a fan of that split myself.
- 1:26:58SPEAKER_03: I thought it was uh very well executed.
- 1:27:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I was like, why don't we do it again here?
- 1:27:03SPEAKER_00: Um so we have one track where people are expecting, or one disc where people are expecting, you know, really high octane, crazy, you know, pulse pounding beats from all these crazy tunes that they love and want to hear in like grand arrangement remixed fashion.
- 1:27:21SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, how about we give them that and more of what they love?
- 1:27:24SPEAKER_00: And one disc will be nothing but giving them what they want and what they're expecting.
- 1:27:29SPEAKER_00: And then the second disc is let's do a little more interpretive, let's, you know, do some more interesting um takes on some of these songs, and that'll be, you know, the the focus of that disc.
- 1:27:42SPEAKER_00: And again, it ended up being the perfect blend.
- 1:27:46SPEAKER_03: I I love it.
- 1:27:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah, um that's one thing I I think the uh the series in general, uh the original tracks also kind of have this split.
- 1:27:55SPEAKER_03: Because like uh the original Star Fox in particular, uh so I I played A lot of schmups.
- 1:28:01SPEAKER_03: And I think uh one thing that every good shmup does, uh, especially you know if you're you're trying to get the one CC and you're gonna be playing the opening stage a lot, is the opening stage music is like a really good get hyped track, uh, and Star Fox does that very well.
- 1:28:20SPEAKER_03: But also, uh, especially starting with Star Fox 64, uh, they start bringing in more orchestral elements sometimes, uh, and there is more variety in the music of the series.
- 1:28:33SPEAKER_03: Uh so I I liked how that was reflected in the album split.
- 1:28:38SPEAKER_03: Yes, thank you.
- 1:28:41SPEAKER_03: So that actually Yeah, no question there.
- 1:28:43SPEAKER_03: I'm just rambling again.
- 1:28:44SPEAKER_00: No, and that that actually brings up a good point, actually.
- 1:28:47SPEAKER_00: As a director, if you want to direct your own uh album and everything, it's good to have a core idea of what you want to do with the album.
- 1:28:57SPEAKER_00: Um, do you want to do it like tell it like a story?
- 1:29:00SPEAKER_00: Because Skies of Arcadia album, you kind of roughly follow the locations and the locales from beginning to end where you know the third disc has more of the end game sort of tracks, the first disc has more of the beginning tracks, and you know, so you're telling a story throughout the whole album, or do you kind of want it uh where Seeds of Pandora where you're you're mixing it up um between uh styles and genres and stuff like that, or did you have another plan altogether?
- 1:29:27SPEAKER_00: As a director, you need to know what you're going in, because this is what you're going to pitch to people to hop on board and volunteer their time, their effort, their blood, sweat, and tears to produce music for free, because OC Remix does free albums, you need to have a good uh a good plan for your uh for your disc, for your uh album.
- 1:29:49SPEAKER_03: The good piece of advice.
- 1:29:52SPEAKER_03: Uh so uh let's talk about the uh you said we you had a 2-2-1.
- 1:29:57SPEAKER_03: What's what's the next pair of tracks you want to talk about?
- 1:30:00SPEAKER_00: The next pair is actually the track uh disc two, track one, and disc two, track fifteen.
- 1:31:23SPEAKER_00: It's basically covering the Thorntail Hollow theme.
- 1:31:25SPEAKER_00: Again, another adventures one.
- 1:31:28SPEAKER_00: And uh this was not requested to do two.
- 1:31:33SPEAKER_00: It was just that Zack Parish and Eminator decided to we're gonna make this super, super long uh track regarding Thorntail Hollow, but uh we're gonna split it up into day and night.
- 1:31:45SPEAKER_00: And uh where you know Zack Parrish was primarily the arranger of the day version and Eminator was the range the primary arranger of the night version.
- 1:31:54SPEAKER_03: And of course the uh does the uh does the original game have like a day-night mechanic, or is that something they just did as part of the oh okay.
- 1:32:02SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes.
- 1:32:04SPEAKER_00: And I I really uh enjoyed their different takes on it, and it was interesting because it's just like they're both so good.
- 1:32:12SPEAKER_00: I was not expecting how epic their renditions would be, and they're just like, oh, you can just put them, you know, separately or side by side, because they kind of are designed to flow one into the other, and I'm just like, I I I feel this would be kind of disingenuous to to put them side by side because then they kind of drown each other out, and you wouldn't know when what one when one starts, when one begins, which one is which, and then they don't they both become less as a result by being next to each other.
- 1:32:43SPEAKER_00: So I felt like okay.
- 1:32:45SPEAKER_00: If they're supposed to be flowing from one into the other, how about we'll have one at the beginning of the disc and one at the end, so it flows right back into the beginning of the disc.
- 1:32:55SPEAKER_00: And it wasn't until I kept listening to them on repeat that I figured out the order.
- 1:33:02SPEAKER_00: There's a specific section towards the end of the Hollow Knights, the track 15 on disc 2, that was just so epic, so you know majestic, I was just like, I can't not put this as the final send out to the album.
- 1:33:17SPEAKER_00: This one's the this one goes at the end.
- 1:33:20SPEAKER_00: And that's how I decided the order between the two.
- 1:33:23SPEAKER_03: Makes sense.
- 1:33:23SPEAKER_03: And I yeah, I love the book ending.
- 1:33:26SPEAKER_03: Uh I think uh I I love it when albums or soundtracks do that in general.
- 1:33:31SPEAKER_03: It's uh I think it's a great technique.
- 1:33:33SPEAKER_03: Uh alright, but uh what else you got?
- 1:33:36SPEAKER_03: What's what's number one then?
- 1:33:37SPEAKER_03: What's what's the standalone?
- 1:33:39SPEAKER_00: Oh, there's so many standalones, but I will choose I will choose uh Venom Pulse from Blind.
- 1:33:45SPEAKER_00: Disc one track three.
- 1:34:30SPEAKER_03: I mean they're all good ones, but sorry, I'm I'm a fan of Blind, so I saw a blind track and I was like, yes, Blind, let's go.
- 1:34:38SPEAKER_00: He and I have been working on albums together since Misar Attacks.
- 1:34:43SPEAKER_00: So um he doesn't have the perfect attendance award.
- 1:34:46SPEAKER_00: That's Glacial Spoon, because he's been with me since Skies of Arcadia.
- 1:34:49SPEAKER_00: He sure has, yeah.
- 1:34:51SPEAKER_00: Yes, but uh Blind has been with me since then on every album since then, and we've actually gotten quite a good rapport with each other.
- 1:34:59SPEAKER_00: We've talked about a lot of topics, we're you know, I wouldn't say we're like, you know, besties and stuff, but we are we are very friendly acquaintances and we do talk from time to time and stuff.
- 1:35:09SPEAKER_00: And I've gone to a point three albums in with him that I was comfortable enough to give him feedback, and not necessarily, you know, um, you know, just like, oh, this is good, but maybe it could be a little better.
- 1:35:22SPEAKER_00: No, just like, dude, this something's missing here.
- 1:35:25SPEAKER_00: You you need something else.
- 1:35:26SPEAKER_00: And Venom Pulse, when he first pushed it out, um, to like, hey, what do you think of this, you know, finished whip and stuff?
- 1:35:33SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, I don't know, man.
- 1:35:34SPEAKER_00: It's missing some hard percussion, it's missing some drums.
- 1:35:37SPEAKER_00: And I suggested at the time, because I didn't know, you know, what he was gonna go with, but I was like, how about some like Taiko drums, you know, like those big you know, they have on you know Japanese, you know, stages and everything, and just like those, you know, big heavy hidden drums like really banging out uh through the track.
- 1:35:52SPEAKER_00: He's like, hmm, you know what?
- 1:35:54SPEAKER_00: I think I think I can do something with that.
- 1:35:56SPEAKER_00: And like a couple days later he came back and it's was more or less in the condition that you you hear it now in the album, and it was because of my suggestion to add the drums.
- 1:36:08SPEAKER_00: That's fantastic.
- 1:36:10SPEAKER_00: So we're at a point where I feel like he now trusts my my judgment on some on some things with his music.
- 1:36:17SPEAKER_00: Not all things, but some things.
- 1:36:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:36:22SPEAKER_00: Which is fine.
- 1:36:24SPEAKER_00: But uh side note, uh, I I I I don't know how much I can tell, but I know he wants to do uh another album, a final farewell album, I guess, to OC Remix that he wants to do an album.
- 1:36:37SPEAKER_00: I can't say what it is yet, because I don't want to get anybody's hopes up, but he has expressed interest that he wants me to help him, at least with the directing admin side of the house for that.
- 1:36:47SPEAKER_00: Okay, I'll I'll keep my eyes peeled.
- 1:36:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but I don't think I can say much more than that.
- 1:36:52SPEAKER_03: Sure, that's fair.
- 1:36:54SPEAKER_03: Um do you have any other uh fun behind-the-scenes stories?
- 1:36:59SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 1:37:01SPEAKER_00: Actually, we have a couple small ones, okay.
- 1:37:04SPEAKER_00: And we have a couple big ones.
- 1:37:06SPEAKER_00: Oh, but uh a small one.
- 1:37:08SPEAKER_00: I know Ridley Snipes, I heard just kind of just disappeared or something.
- 1:37:13SPEAKER_00: Um so he did track 11 on disc 2 ballast, which is Aqua's from Starfest 64.
- 1:37:19SPEAKER_00: Um, his was actually the first one done.
- 1:37:21SPEAKER_00: Like I didn't I had I hadn't heard of Ridley Snipes, or if I had, I'd not really listen to a lot of his uh arrangements on OCR.
- 1:37:30SPEAKER_00: And uh I we I guess we were super lucky to have him uh when I first pitched the idea and I had people clean tracks.
- 1:37:38SPEAKER_00: He was one of the first to claim, and then like not even like a couple weeks later, he's like, Here's my finished track, deuces, and he let left.
- 1:37:46SPEAKER_00: And he just he just dropped the track and left, and that was his uh his was the first completed.
- 1:37:54SPEAKER_00: And okay, and honestly, it was so good we didn't need to call him back for for uh improvements or polishing.
- 1:38:03SPEAKER_00: Nope.
- 1:38:04SPEAKER_00: Ah, yes.
- 1:38:05SPEAKER_00: Going back to track 12, disc one, Spectre, from Triette Crozola Palace, there's this funny little line in there towards the end of the track.
- 1:38:13SPEAKER_00: It's an inside joke that started way back in Seeds of Pandora.
- 1:38:18SPEAKER_00: And it's the uh you're gonna.
- 1:38:21SPEAKER_00: Okay, so for Seeds of Pandora, track two, or track 17, disc two, You Got Me Dancing by Triette.
- 1:38:29SPEAKER_00: Uh, there's a section in that particular uh song where after the choral bridge and everything like that, he he he starts building up to the next hit of the uh the chorus.
- 1:38:42SPEAKER_00: He's like, you know, uh let's get this party started.
- 1:38:45SPEAKER_00: Let's get this party, let's get this party started.
- 1:38:48SPEAKER_00: He like repeats it over and over to the point where it just became this meme where um it like every time he entered like the chat or the group uh setting, he's just like, ah, now we can get the party started.
- 1:39:01SPEAKER_00: Trance here.
- 1:39:03SPEAKER_00: And of course, what was even more hilarious is when the final track list came out, you know, he's like, Alright, let's get this party started.
- 1:39:09SPEAKER_00: I'm like, nah, your track is at the end of a disc, you close out the disc.
- 1:39:12SPEAKER_00: The party just ended.
- 1:39:13SPEAKER_00: And he's like He's like, that's so cruel, why would you do that?
- 1:39:19SPEAKER_00: And uh so it became this little insight joke we just said over and over, and then he did Spectre from the Crisola Palace, and he's like, he's like, I put in a little little gift for you.
- 1:39:32SPEAKER_00: And I was listening to it, and then you'll you'll hear it if you if you're listening for it.
- 1:39:36SPEAKER_00: Let's get this party started.
- 1:39:38SPEAKER_00: I'm like, oh my god, and he's like, Did you hear it?
- 1:39:42SPEAKER_00: I'm like, yes, I love it.
- 1:39:44SPEAKER_00: Don't change it.
- 1:39:44SPEAKER_00: Leave it in.
- 1:39:48SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
- 1:39:49SPEAKER_00: So we we have fun with each other sometimes, especially if you get to have a good rapport with quite a few of these uh uh remixers and stuff, and they're all good folks.
- 1:39:58SPEAKER_00: Shout out to Rotten Eggplant, uh, track four disc one, fighting storms in Titania.
- 1:40:03SPEAKER_00: He was uh the original master of Skies of Arcadia album, Arcadia Legend.
- 1:40:10SPEAKER_00: Yes, and I actually got to meet the guy.
- 1:40:13SPEAKER_00: He was trucking at the time, uh, when I was in North Carolina, uh, Fayetteville.
- 1:40:18SPEAKER_00: And uh he was just trucking through the area.
- 1:40:20SPEAKER_00: He stopped by, we we we hung out at a Barnes and Noble.
- 1:40:23SPEAKER_00: Oh was it Borders?
- 1:40:24SPEAKER_00: Barnes and Noble Borders, one of the two.
- 1:40:26SPEAKER_00: And I think it was Books a Million, actually.
- 1:40:29SPEAKER_00: Anyway, not important.
- 1:40:34SPEAKER_00: And we Yeah, it's it's yeah, it's Books a Million.
- 1:40:37SPEAKER_00: Um so we actually sat down together side by side at the Starbucks in there, and we just listened to some headphones, and we we actually mastered together a couple the tracks there.
- 1:40:49SPEAKER_00: And he was pretty cool, dude, man.
- 1:40:51SPEAKER_00: So can't can't wait to see him again once I get back to the States.
- 1:40:55SPEAKER_00: But I wanted him uh to master Mizar Tax because I had good rapport with him and he was awesome for Cardiot Legends, but he couldn't do it due to real life and stuff.
- 1:41:05SPEAKER_00: He had some struggles, and then Seeds of Pantor, I couldn't contact him, I didn't know where he was, he wasn't responding to anything, so I was like, okay.
- 1:41:12SPEAKER_00: And then for this, he came back and he's like, hey, I can't master, you know, because I'm kind of busy, but I think I can contribute a track.
- 1:41:20SPEAKER_00: So I was just like, yeah, man, let's go.
- 1:41:22SPEAKER_00: So he finally got he got a he he he returned uh in double wing damage, so I'm happy for that.
- 1:41:30SPEAKER_03: Excellent.
- 1:41:30SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna hear it.
- 1:41:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it sounds like he really built up a rapport with a large chunk of the community at this point.
- 1:41:38SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 1:41:39SPEAKER_00: And now this is a uh a funny story.
- 1:41:42SPEAKER_00: Track three just to the perfect aparate dinner by Zalif.
- 1:41:46SPEAKER_00: Xalif, man, he's crazy.
- 1:41:48SPEAKER_00: He he could he claimed like five tracks right out of the gate.
- 1:41:52SPEAKER_00: I'm like, dude, what?
- 1:41:55SPEAKER_03: Zalif is actually one of the few uh remixers I've met and met in person.
- 1:42:00SPEAKER_03: Uh we uh we were both at Magfest, and at we were, you know, just generally like at some point we should meet up, blah blah blah.
- 1:42:09SPEAKER_03: Uh and then of course no one could contact anyone because the cell network was completely saturated.
- 1:42:16SPEAKER_03: Uh and anyway, we just like independently sat down next to each other at a Mario 64 speedrun and looked at each other and went like, It's you! Like the Spider-Man meme.
- 1:42:27SPEAKER_02: That's awesome.
- 1:42:29SPEAKER_00: So, but he claimed five out of the gate, and I was just like, man, you're crazy.
- 1:42:34SPEAKER_00: You're gonna be able to do all these?
- 1:42:35SPEAKER_00: He's like, Yeah, don't worry about it.
- 1:42:36SPEAKER_00: Um so don't get me wrong, every single one is just he knocked it out of the park.
- 1:42:40SPEAKER_00: Perfect execution all the way, but he was struggling with this one for some reason, and he really wasn't.
- 1:42:45SPEAKER_00: He'll tell you.
- 1:42:46SPEAKER_00: He'll he'll he even told the story to everybody, and even during the uh group listening, community listening party.
- 1:42:53SPEAKER_00: Um, this was the one track his daughter, which I think what is Audio Mint, I think it is.
- 1:42:57SPEAKER_03: Uh Audiomint.
- 1:42:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:42:58SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 1:42:59SPEAKER_00: She's like, she's like, Daddy, this sucks.
- 1:43:03SPEAKER_00: Like like the first couple whips he tried, she's like, this is terrible.
- 1:43:07SPEAKER_00: And he's just like, ah, he has to go drawing board again.
- 1:43:11SPEAKER_00: So I was just like, I thought that was a funny little aside.
- 1:43:14SPEAKER_00: I'm like, hey, I was just like, hey, that that critique was not for me.
- 1:43:17SPEAKER_00: That was all her.
- 1:43:20SPEAKER_00: You take it up with her.
- 1:43:21SPEAKER_00: Uh but yeah, that was a funny little uh story he shared with all of us.
- 1:43:25SPEAKER_00: But he struggled a lot on that one, but I think he uh ended up with a a good uh a good track overall.
- 1:43:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's a great track.
- 1:43:34SPEAKER_03: Uh yeah, I mean it's just gonna show you doesn't matter how long you've been doing something, you know, some a little feedback uh can always help out.
- 1:43:42SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 1:43:43SPEAKER_00: Maybe not as harsh, but yes.
- 1:43:45SPEAKER_00: Well, you know, there's family has special privileges.
- 1:43:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, of course, of course.
- 1:43:51SPEAKER_00: And since we're on the topic of Zalif, track 14, disc one, Fortuna Protocol, I think was the last one he submitted, but it was also one of the last tracks to be accepted before the deadline uh uh cutoff.
- 1:44:03SPEAKER_00: Uh the really last track was uh disc two, track four, Death of Fox McLeod, but by Lucas, but we're talking about Fortuna Protocol for Zalif.
- 1:44:13SPEAKER_00: He was also struggling with this one, but not necessarily, I think, because of, you know, he couldn't figure out an idea for it or how to arrange it.
- 1:44:21SPEAKER_00: It was more just real life stuff, if I recall.
- 1:44:24SPEAKER_00: It was a lot of just things that were just taking up his time, and he didn't think he was gonna be able to make it in before the deadline, and I kind of fudged it just a little bit for him so he could get it in on time, the deadline, because I listened to his work in progress of that song, and I'm just like, dude, this sounds so far different than any of the other four tracks you submitted.
- 1:44:44SPEAKER_00: We have to have this on on the album.
- 1:44:46SPEAKER_00: I I I will I will hold off the album just a little bit longer if you feel like you can make it in on on this by this date.
- 1:44:53SPEAKER_00: And he did.
- 1:44:53SPEAKER_00: And he pulled through.
- 1:44:55SPEAKER_00: So.
- 1:44:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, uh I privileges of being the director.
- 1:44:58SPEAKER_03: You get discretionary fudge.
- 1:45:02SPEAKER_00: Which brings up another good point as a director.
- 1:45:07SPEAKER_00: This goes back all the way to Arcadia Legends.
- 1:45:10SPEAKER_00: I've had to make some tough decisions on like pretty much almost every single album I've made.
- 1:45:16SPEAKER_00: Um, with the toughest being, of course, one on Arcadia Legends, and then of course one couple here on this album.
- 1:45:23SPEAKER_00: Um, so let's start with Arcadia Legends.
- 1:45:26SPEAKER_00: Uh I didn't know how much pull I had because at the time I was a nobody, even though I've been working on this for three and a half years.
- 1:45:35SPEAKER_00: Like, how much do I really have a right to deny someone to put their track on the album and stuff?
- 1:45:41SPEAKER_00: And I submitted it as is, knowing that a particular track, I'm not gonna say the remix and I'm not gonna say the track, but just just you know, for story purposes, I don't want to single anyone out.
- 1:45:53SPEAKER_00: But there was a track that was coming back with a lot of negative feedback by the by the judges.
- 1:46:00SPEAKER_00: And they're just like, this needs to change.
- 1:46:02SPEAKER_00: This this is very, you know, strident, it's very cacophonous, or whatever the word verbat, you know, adjectives you want to use, like it's not meshing very well with the rest of the album, and it really stands out like a sore thumb.
- 1:46:15SPEAKER_00: And so I had to make a decision.
- 1:46:16SPEAKER_00: I'm like, I have the the power to push forward and just keep this on the album, or I can ask one of my remixer buddies, who was really coming through in a pinch at the time, to do a last-minute uh replacement.
- 1:46:32SPEAKER_00: So before I made a decision, I pitched it to him like, hey, here's the situation.
- 1:46:37SPEAKER_00: Do you feel like you could make a uh last you know minute of this particular song?
- 1:46:43SPEAKER_00: We need this song specifically replaced, so you have you can't just choose a song, it has to be this one.
- 1:46:47SPEAKER_00: And he's like, Okay, I'll get it done.
- 1:46:49SPEAKER_00: And he got it done in like six days.
- 1:46:51SPEAKER_00: And yeah, he's just like barreled through it.
- 1:46:55SPEAKER_00: I'd really like to give him um kudos and credit, but the thing is that that'll highlight who we replaced, so I don't want to do that.
- 1:47:00SPEAKER_00: Um, but it was such a hard decision, and and the the the remixer who who we who who we had to drop never talk to me again and never went to any of the pitches for the other three albums I've been a part of.
- 1:47:18SPEAKER_00: And you know, that's understandable, I get it.
- 1:47:21SPEAKER_00: It was hurt feelings, but it was not intentionally meant to be that way, you know?
- 1:47:26SPEAKER_00: Like as a as a director, you have to make some hard calls and you're not gonna please everybody.
- 1:47:32SPEAKER_00: In the end, you're you're looking to to hopefully make the best product you can with the people who are uh participating in it, and if you're submitting it to, in this case, OCR, who has a set of standards that you have to meet, and it's not meeting those standards, then you have to step in, unfortunately, and make those tough, heavy decisions.
- 1:47:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, can't please everyone, unfortunately.
- 1:47:58SPEAKER_03: And you know, I I have uh I have heard from remixers in the past that uh albums are a good way to get started as a remixer, um, because there's usually, you know, a lot of enthusiasm, there's usually a lot of demand for yeah, we need more tracks for this album.
- 1:48:15SPEAKER_03: Um and I'm not- I'm not gonna say that the standards aren't as high for albums as they are for submitted tracks, but uh, you know, the the director does have the power to move forward anyway, uh, with a track that's maybe not as great.
- 1:48:32SPEAKER_03: And I know in the past there have been tracks that from various albums that made it onto albums and then didn't make it through the submission process.
- 1:48:42SPEAKER_03: So uh you know, I think it happens.
- 1:48:47SPEAKER_03: Uh you know, I I I know that there's tracks that uh made it in onto the album and then only made it through the submission process with some reworks.
- 1:48:59SPEAKER_03: Um yeah, I I have heard in the past uh uh getting on an album is maybe the the the best way to uh get your feet wet.
- 1:49:09SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 1:49:10SPEAKER_00: Um and and and it's because of the the the I wouldn't say standards, but the threshold, there we go.
- 1:49:17SPEAKER_00: The threshold I believe 50%, I think, of the album needs to pass.
- 1:49:23SPEAKER_03: Ah, okay.
- 1:49:24SPEAKER_00: I think it could be higher even like 60%.
- 1:49:27SPEAKER_00: But anyway, point being the threshold is lower than 100.
- 1:49:30SPEAKER_03: So Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:49:32SPEAKER_00: So like your your track has to 100% pass if it's on its own, but if it's part of the album, then it just needs to be at least, you know, a majority.
- 1:49:40SPEAKER_00: But anyway, uh it's definitely true.
- 1:49:43SPEAKER_00: A good place to get your feet wet on on remixing.
- 1:49:46SPEAKER_00: But yeah, as I said, there were several here that I had to turn away their tracks.
- 1:49:51SPEAKER_00: I I can count on one hand like at least three or four remixers where they they turned in something, and uh a couple of them were either not.
- 1:50:00SPEAKER_00: Going to make the deadline, and so I'm just like, Well, we're already at 30 tracks, and it's kind of like a good even mix and everything, and we're gonna have to, you know, kind of sneak you in if you can really make it, and they didn't make it.
- 1:50:11SPEAKER_00: Or someone said, Here's my track, and I'm like, Okay, this is good, this is good.
- 1:50:15SPEAKER_00: Uh, do you think you can, you know, spruce it up?
- 1:50:18SPEAKER_00: It feels like it feels like it's like work in progress number two or three, right?
- 1:50:21SPEAKER_00: And they're like, No, this is finished.
- 1:50:23SPEAKER_02: I'm like, ooh.
- 1:50:26SPEAKER_00: Like, like you listen to the tracks that are already finished and and already included on the album, and then you listen to the one that they say is already finished, and you're like, it's not up to up to the par of the rest of the tracks that are gonna be around yours.
- 1:50:41SPEAKER_00: And it this is not a slight towards anybody, but as a re as a director, this is what you gotta deal with.
- 1:50:49SPEAKER_00: This is the tough truth that you have to work through and be like, man, I I I'm gonna probably make an enemy of this guy or gal, or this person's not gonna like me because I'm I'm gonna reject them, but it's not because, you know, who they are as a remixer is bad or anything, it's just it's just not a good fit.
- 1:51:06SPEAKER_00: It's just not a good fit for for the album or for the rest of the tracks.
- 1:51:11SPEAKER_00: And it sucks.
- 1:51:12SPEAKER_00: It really does.
- 1:51:13SPEAKER_00: It sucks when you have to make those sorts of decisions.
- 1:51:15SPEAKER_00: And hopefully, hopefully they understand.
- 1:51:19SPEAKER_03: Hopefully, yeah.
- 1:51:20SPEAKER_03: I I can imagine it's uh very difficult to achieve uh a cohesion of sound on an OC remix album because you know, not only are you dealing with uh potentially different original composers of tracks, but also every remixer has their own interpretation, and it could be just a crazy melange of genres, you know.
- 1:51:44SPEAKER_03: Uh and you you do have to figure out does this even fit in with the rest of the album?
- 1:51:50SPEAKER_03: What does fitting in even mean?
- 1:51:52SPEAKER_03: Um yeah, I can't imagine it's an easy task.
- 1:51:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:51:58SPEAKER_03: So, uh, do you do you know what you're gonna do next?
- 1:52:01SPEAKER_03: Do you have any ideas or anything you'd want to talk about?
- 1:52:04SPEAKER_03: Uh it's okay if the answer is no.
- 1:52:06SPEAKER_03: You know, the uh other than the blind potential, which other than the blind the yeah, the other than the one we already know you can't talk about.
- 1:52:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, which may not even happen, so uh that's why I'm not getting everybody's I'm not getting anyone's hope up on that one.
- 1:52:21SPEAKER_00: Uh I kinda wanted to do Outer Wilds, but I just I don't feel like the the interest is there, or not a lot of people have gotten into it, and the my idea concept for it would be a little difficult to work around, because it it's for anybody who's played the game, it it's it's the whole album is going to centrally funnel and focus around the 22-minute mark.
- 1:52:48SPEAKER_00: That's about all I can say right now, since the album has not been officially pitched, or I'm not even I don't know if I'm gonna go through with it, but for those who have played the game, you will know exactly what I mean by the 22-minute mark and what significance that holds.
- 1:53:00SPEAKER_00: But that that was kind of the original core concept of where I wanted to go with an album based on that game.
- 1:53:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I uh I know I haven't played it myself, but I know the game has uh it has a lot of fans, a lot of people who uh I believe it's overwhelmingly positive on Steam, but it is a bit niche.
- 1:53:22SPEAKER_03: You know, it's it's not something that uh has really, I think, um been a huge part of the gaming discourse.
- 1:53:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and unfortunately that's that's kind of sad because it's the soundtrack, although a lot of it is minimalist, there is some really standout tracks.
- 1:53:40SPEAKER_00: Like I wouldn't expect this to expand beyond a single disc.
- 1:53:44SPEAKER_00: This is like a short one disc album, honestly.
- 1:53:46SPEAKER_00: There's not enough enough melodic material there to make more than that, I would think.
- 1:53:51SPEAKER_00: But of the tracks that are there, I think we could get a good solid, I don't know, nine to ten tracks and and then funnel it around the 22-minute mark, and we could make something nice out of it.
- 1:54:02SPEAKER_00: But you know, that's neither here nor there.
- 1:54:05SPEAKER_03: I do know that uh Time Shift had at least one Outer Wilds track, but that might be the only one that I know of.
- 1:54:14SPEAKER_00: And it was a great track.
- 1:54:16SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, that was fantastic.
- 1:54:17SPEAKER_03: Uh was that also Ridley Snipes?
- 1:54:18SPEAKER_03: It may have been.
- 1:54:19SPEAKER_03: It was Ridley Snipes.
- 1:54:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that was a great track.
- 1:54:23SPEAKER_03: Uh well, we have been at this about an hour, and I don't want to keep you your whole evening.
- 1:54:28SPEAKER_03: I appreciate you uh talking with me about this.
- 1:54:30SPEAKER_00: No worries, it was fun.
- 1:54:32SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 1:54:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, thank you.
- 1:54:34SPEAKER_03: Um, and uh yeah, hopefully we can uh chat more in the future.
- 1:54:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, when hopefully another album comes my way that I want to direct and everything, uh I'll probably reach out to the usuals and uh see if they're interested.
- 1:54:49SPEAKER_00: And uh let's get this party started.
- 1:55:21SPEAKER_03: Thanks again to Dark Flame Wolf for the interview.
- 1:55:24SPEAKER_03: And thanks to you, the listener, for listening.
- 1:55:26SPEAKER_03: And if you are a particularly motivated listener, you can also give some money.

- 1:56:06SPEAKER_03: The interstitial music this month was Lonely in Space with a Waltz by Slimey from Star Fox.
- 1:56:13SPEAKER_03: Our outro music was See You Next Time, Water, by Darksword from Final Fantasy V.
- 1:56:19SPEAKER_03: And as always, we are going to close out by using a six-sided eye to pick a track from the remix roulette on the main page of OCR.
- 1:56:28SPEAKER_03: Alright, that's a two, so we have Northern Promise by Dale North from Radical Dreamers.
- 1:56:36SPEAKER_03: Alright, have a great month, and I'll catch you next time.
