- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle talk Tabernacle talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD I'm
- 0:07your host Brian self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word and show his love to others
- 0:14Let's dive right in Welcome back to Tabernacle talk.
- 0:16I hope that you're having a good day today.
- 0:19It is at the time that I'm recording this, it is a very
- 0:22dark, overcast morning. And it's, you know, kind of
- 0:26seemed like a kind of chilly, rainy morning that you might see
- 0:31in like a, you know, detective show or movie.
- 0:35And so I'm just honestly enjoying this season.
- 0:38I've got at the time that I'm recording this, spending a
- 0:42couple days with my family and I've got family coming out from
- 0:46Florida, family from depending on what time of year it is from
- 0:51either North Carolina or Colorado and going and visiting
- 0:55family in Pennsylvania. All of us are getting together.
- 0:58And so I'm just thankful for for what the Lord is doing in my
- 1:04family. I'm thankful for what he's doing
- 1:06in our church. At the time that I'm recording
- 1:11this. I had great last Sunday of 2025
- 1:18and was able to for our kind of final service of the year, had
- 1:23some devotionals from our elders to be able to get to the church
- 1:27and encourage them. And that's always just a joy to
- 1:31be able to hear people from all different backgrounds.
- 1:34We've got Pastor Ron who's, you know, seminary trained and has
- 1:3840 plus years of ministry. We have guys that, you know,
- 1:43less than 10 years ago started doing men's ministry and just
- 1:49the the breadth of what God is able to do with people that just
- 1:55surrender to him. I am not by any means better
- 2:00than any other person. The only thing that you know
- 2:04makes me unique is Jesus and every, every Christian has
- 2:09Jesus. And so he is the thing that like
- 2:12ties us together. And so I always want to try to
- 2:15be faithful, to listen to others who are walking in the Spirit of
- 2:20God that are filled with the word of God that they are
- 2:23encouraging. And so I hope that that's what's
- 2:26Tabernacle Talk is for you, that you're able to just hear from
- 2:30the Word. And so we're going to dive in
- 2:32today to Psalm 119 and we're looking at the verses that start
- 2:36with the Hebrew letter zade zade.
- 2:40And these are verses 137 through 144.
- 2:45And we are very, very close to the end of Psalm 119.
- 2:50We've got 1234. There's only four more episodes
- 2:54in Psalm 119 and we are done. So I think that takes us
- 2:58through, if you're listening to this, that the day it comes out,
- 3:01I think through next Monday and then starting on Tuesday, we
- 3:06will finish out book 5 of Psalms and that'll be Psalms 120
- 3:10through 150. And then I know couple of
- 3:13episodes that we're doing after that.
- 3:15And so I'm just looking forward to that together.
- 3:17Let's read through. And there are two.
- 3:21Yeah, there's two main thoughts that I want to look at today
- 3:23from verses 137 to 144. You are righteous, Yahweh, and
- 3:29Your judgments are just. The decrees you issue are
- 3:33righteous and all together trustworthy.
- 3:36My anger overwhelms me because my foes forget Your words.
- 3:41Your word is completely pure and Your servant loves it.
- 3:46I am insignificant and despised, but I do not forget Your
- 3:50precepts. Your righteousness is an
- 3:53everlasting righteousness, and Your instruction is true.
- 3:57Trouble and distress have overtaken me, but your commands
- 4:02are my delight. Your decrees are righteous
- 4:05forever. Give me understanding and I will
- 4:09live. All right.
- 4:11What can we learn from this portion of Scripture?
- 4:15Well, there's one word that shows up five different times in
- 4:20this passage and it's the word righteous.
- 4:23And that's verse 137 you are righteous, Yahweh.
- 4:26Verse 138 you're the decrees you issue are righteous.
- 4:30Verse 142 your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness.
- 4:34And verse 144 your decrees are righteous forever.
- 4:38And this word is the word Zadiq. So I mentioned that the Hebrew
- 4:45letter that all of these verses start with is the Hebrew letter
- 4:50Sade, and that goes right into this word Sadiq, and it's an
- 4:55adjective. Righteous righteousness is
- 4:59certainly a good translation of it.
- 5:02It describes something that is just innocent in the right.
- 5:08It is accurate. So it would be used very often
- 5:13to describe a judge that was giving a fair ruling that he
- 5:17wasn't being bent by a bribe. It would be someone that when
- 5:23they were measuring out an amount of say, flour or rice to
- 5:29give someone, they were giving them the correct amount that
- 5:33they paid for. They weren't short changing them
- 5:35at all. It was correct.
- 5:37And so here the thought with righteousness is it is a
- 5:42straightforward, upright on the narrow kind of person.
- 5:50It's a kind of action that you just know this person, they're
- 5:54cutting it straight. It's just straightforward.
- 5:57And so I do not have to question on if there's ulterior motives
- 6:02here. I don't have to worry about, you
- 6:05know, them trying to cheat me. It's just regular, just
- 6:12innocent. And here is the way that God
- 6:15interacts with us. I am a human.
- 6:19I don't know if you know that. And you are a human likely,
- 6:22unless you're maybe my friend Dina's dogs and maybe she has
- 6:27this playing in the kitchen in her home and, and you're just
- 6:30listening to me. No, but most of you, you are
- 6:33humans. And so as you listen to this, we
- 6:35know what it is to not be straightforward in how we
- 6:42interact with other people, that we want to try and save other
- 6:47people's feelings. And so we don't shoot straight
- 6:50with them. We want to avoid any sort of
- 6:53conflict. And so we don't shoot straight
- 6:55with people. We want to maybe pull a fast one
- 7:00over on someone. I think I hear about goofy stuff
- 7:05that happens at like restaurants where people intentionally do
- 7:10stuff to get a free meal, or they're like, yes, if I just
- 7:14complain enough, then I can get free food.
- 7:17It's those kinds of things that are just, they're not
- 7:19straightforward. They're not honestly dealing
- 7:22with people. Or you can think about, I think
- 7:25it was Apple in the EU, in the European Union.
- 7:30They got sued or they had to pay some sort of hefty fine as a
- 7:36result of the fact that they intentionally put planned
- 7:40obsolescence into their phones. Basically, yes, this is going to
- 7:46not just continue working, but this is created so that within
- 7:50three to five years someone is going to need to get a new one
- 7:54of these devices. And that's not like an honest
- 7:57business practice. It's not saying I want to give
- 8:01someone a product that will last them a long time.
- 8:04Instead, it's I want them to keep on coming back over and
- 8:09over again, not just because they want the newest product,
- 8:12but because their old product literally does not work anymore.
- 8:16And I've had I've had phones and tablets and things, computers
- 8:21that went through that exact process.
- 8:24And the way that I was dealt with was not straightforward,
- 8:28honest, dealing rightly. But that is the way that God
- 8:32deals with us. And so here in verse 137, this
- 8:36is how God is described, that he is righteous.
- 8:39He's the innocent, the upright one.
- 8:42And the psalmist says your judgments are just.
- 8:46I love that we can know exactly what God thinks about us, about
- 8:52the way that we're living our life, his favor, our eternal
- 8:57soul, all of that. God has given us the ability to
- 9:01know. He's not hiding it from us.
- 9:04I've, I've talked with people before that they go, well, I'm
- 9:07just, you know, I, I don't know that anyone can really know
- 9:10before they die if they are right with the Lord.
- 9:13Like you're not God. And so how can you say that you
- 9:17know that you have eternal life? And I certainly love the verse
- 9:21in first John 513 that gives us the reason why where John tells
- 9:25the people that he's writing to these things.
- 9:27I've written to you that believe on the name of the Son of God,
- 9:32so that you may know that you have eternal life and that
- 9:35through believing you may have faith in his name.
- 9:39And so I love the fact that God is super straightforward with
- 9:43you. We think life is incredibly
- 9:46complicated, but so often we find it complicated because we
- 9:50don't just follow the instructions that the Lord has
- 9:53for us. He says to reconcile when we
- 9:58know someone, when we know that someone has something against
- 10:00us, we got to go to them and say, all right, let's hash this
- 10:05out. God says that he resists the
- 10:08proud but gives grace to the humble.
- 10:11And as we looked at in James Four, that comes right on the
- 10:14heels of interpersonal spats within the church.
- 10:20If you if you don't remember that passage, that's James four
- 10:24one through 6 where James is saying, all right, you guys are
- 10:29fighting and warring amongst yourselves and it's not
- 10:33accomplishing anything good. Like nothing that you are
- 10:36desiring to happen is actually happening.
- 10:38Instead of making peace with one another, you are feuding.
- 10:43And you are asking God for things and you're never seeing
- 10:46him answer because you're just asking it so that you can be
- 10:50selfish. And so God wants no part of
- 10:54that. And so we can know if I'm being
- 10:58proud, if I am not humbling myself, if I am not seeking
- 11:03reconciliation and forgiveness and joy, I can know that I'm not
- 11:10in the will of God. Very often we paint the will of
- 11:15God into a corner to say the will of God is this like unknown
- 11:21thing. And it's a one magical person
- 11:26that will give you the idyllic marriage.
- 11:29And if you don't find that person or you marry the wrong
- 11:32person, well, then you're just never going to experience God's
- 11:36goodness in your life. Or God has one perfect job for
- 11:40you to have. And if you are not in that job,
- 11:42in that particular position that God has for you in that job,
- 11:46then you are just going to be unhappy all of your days.
- 11:49Maybe there's one perfect house. And if you buy a different house
- 11:53or if you buy it at the wrong time, you are just going to
- 11:56experience sadness. And we tie the will of God to
- 12:01things or to people and not to our walk with Him.
- 12:06And in fact, whenever the Bible talks about the will of God, it
- 12:09talks about our behavior. So that's First Thessalonians 4
- 12:15and verse 4. This is the will of God.
- 12:18Even your sanctification that you would abstain from sexual
- 12:22immorality. You can think about First
- 12:24Thessalonians 5 in everything. Give thanks because this is the
- 12:28will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
- 12:32There's several other passages that talk about the will of God.
- 12:36Romans 12 Don't be conformed to this world, but be transformed
- 12:41by the renewing of the of your mind so that you may prove what
- 12:44is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
- 12:49When God is looking at your life, in my life, he's
- 12:51straightforward with us and he says I want you to walk with me
- 12:54because when you walk with me, there is the good life.
- 12:57It's the life led by my Holy Spirit.
- 12:59And as you're doing that, the Holy Spirit very well may lead
- 13:02you to a phenomenal person that will enrich and bless your life.
- 13:07He may lead you to a job in which you find like fulfillment
- 13:11and joy and opportunity to witness to coworkers or
- 13:16phenomenal coworkers that are Christians that you're able to
- 13:19work alongside. He might lead you to a wonderful
- 13:22home where you can show hospitality to fellow believers
- 13:26and to those that do not yet know the Lord.
- 13:28God can bring so many things about, but it centers on the
- 13:33fact that we walk with Him and He is straightforward with us,
- 13:37that he says You walk in my will, you experience the
- 13:41blessings. Psalm One.
- 13:44Blessed is the man that does not walk in the counsel of the
- 13:46ungodly, or stand in the way of sinners, or sit in the seat of
- 13:49the mockers, but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in
- 13:52His law he meditates day and night, and he will be like a
- 13:55tree planted by the rivers of water that brings forth its
- 13:59fruit in its season. His leaf also will not wither,
- 14:02and whatever he does will prosper.
- 14:04The ungodly are not so, but are like the chaff which the wind
- 14:08drives away for I I can't remember that last verse.
- 14:14It's like verse 6 of someone that is the future that God has
- 14:18for us. That's the plan that he has for
- 14:21our life that we are planted, rooted, growing, living off of
- 14:26his word. So let's follow the commands and
- 14:28the word of God verse 138. The decrees you issue are
- 14:32righteous and all together trustworthy.
- 14:35You can believe God when he says do this.
- 14:38This is for your good and for my glory.
- 14:41We can believe it, we can follow it.
- 14:42God's never going to trick us. Verse 142, Your righteousness is
- 14:46an everlasting righteousness and your instruction is true.
- 14:51God's commands do not change. And so I can take it to the bank
- 14:55today just as much as 3000 years ago, that I should not murder,
- 14:59that I should not commit adultery, that I should not
- 15:01steal, that I should not covet or envy or want the things for
- 15:06myself that belong to others. I should worship no other God
- 15:12but the Lord, and I should not elevate any other thing or
- 15:18certainly not worship any other deities, but I should not put
- 15:21anything before the Lord. I shouldn't use God's name, like
- 15:26misuse God's name either in blasphemy or in saying, Oh yeah,
- 15:30God said this or God told me this when God in fact did not
- 15:33tell me that I can believe in the instructions of God.
- 15:39And verse 144, he says your decrees are righteous forever.
- 15:43Give me understanding and I will live to walk with the Lord, to
- 15:49understand what He has for us and to do it is so beneficial to
- 15:55our souls and it will cause us to walk in the path of life.
- 16:00It's if you will, when we come to the tree of the knowledge of
- 16:03good and evil and we listen to what God has said and we choose
- 16:07good. We do not choose to redefine
- 16:10good and wrong on our own whims. Then we get to eat from that
- 16:15tree of life. That's kind of the meta picture
- 16:20that that Scripture paints for us.
- 16:22Even as you look at the end of Revelation that those that have
- 16:26chosen Jesus will at the end of everything we eat of the tree of
- 16:32life and we live forever and Scripture says it's a tree that
- 16:36bears fruit every single month and there there's way too much
- 16:41to go into that further. We're already out of time for
- 16:44today. I just wanted to mention one
- 16:45other thing. So there's righteousness, God's
- 16:47straightforwardness to us. But then I also want to look
- 16:50very, very shortly, just verse 141 and 143 that just because
- 16:56God is upright doesn't mean our world is verse 141.
- 17:00I am insignificant and despised, but I do not forget your
- 17:04precepts. If you feel unimportant and
- 17:07unloved, recognize that doesn't come from God, that comes from
- 17:12the world, that comes from Satan, that comes from fallen
- 17:15humans. Don't allow that to color the
- 17:18way that you see God, and don't allow it to color the way that
- 17:21you see you. Realize that you are important.
- 17:25You are worth the blood of Christ by the fact that He shed
- 17:29it for you and the fact that He adopted you means that you are
- 17:33loved. You are never truly
- 17:35insignificant or despised in the eyes of God.
- 17:39And then verse 143 trouble and distress have overtaken me, but
- 17:42your commands are my delight. There will come times of
- 17:47hardship. You can look at the life of
- 17:49Jesus. He did all things well.
- 17:51He lived the life that God intended.
- 17:54And yet even he went through Golgotha, He went through the
- 17:58Garden of Gethsemane. He went through the trial.
- 18:01He went through the rejection of family and friends and his
- 18:07country and the religious leaders and the political
- 18:09leaders. And so if that's what Jesus went
- 18:12through, then let's not expect that our life will be hunky
- 18:15Dory. Now we can find a genuine walk
- 18:18with God filled with the fruit of the Spirit, even as we walk
- 18:21through those times, just like Jesus did.
- 18:24But recognize trouble will come. But that doesn't mean that God
- 18:27doesn't love you. And he is straightforward enough
- 18:30with you to let you know that that is coming.
- 18:33So be grateful to him. Be thankful that you can know
- 18:36right now what you're standing is with God.
- 18:38Choose to walk with him today and know that you are within the
- 18:42will of God and that your heavenly Father is pleased.
- 18:45Thanks for tuning in today. Next episode we're going to look
- 18:48at the verses that start with the Hebrew letter cough.
