- 0:02Speaker 1: Life audio. How do you face for listeners? Welcome to
- 0:11Speaker 1: the Bible explained on this lovely, lovely Tuesday morning. Hopefully
- 0:16Speaker 1: you guys are having a swell start to your week
- 0:19Speaker 1: and that you have a nice hot beverage in front
- 0:22Speaker 1: of you, guys, as we read through the very end
- 0:24Speaker 1: of First Peter one, and we're going to continue on
- 0:27Speaker 1: this theme that we have been talking about in First Peter,
- 0:30Speaker 1: where Peter discusses living as foreigners here on this earth
- 0:35Speaker 1: and also talking about how special Jesus' sacrifice really is.
- 0:39Speaker 1: All Right, we'll get into this episode right after a
- 0:41Speaker 1: quick message from a sponsor. All right, let's finish out
- 0:45Speaker 1: First Peter chapter one by reading verses seventeen through twenty five.
- 0:50Speaker 1: As usual, I'll be reading from the Web version or
- 0:54Speaker 1: the World English Bible. Let's jump right in with First
- 0:57Speaker 1: Peter one seventeen through twenty five. If you call on
- 1:02Speaker 1: him his father, who without respect of persons, judges according
- 1:06Speaker 1: to each man's work, passed the time of your living
- 1:09Speaker 1: as foreigners here in reverent fear, knowing that you are redeemed,
- 1:13Speaker 1: not with corruptible things like silver or gold, from the
- 1:16Speaker 1: useless way of life handed down from your Father's but
- 1:18Speaker 1: with precious blood as of a lamb without blemish or spot,
- 1:22Speaker 1: the blood of Christ, who was foreknown, indeed before the
- 1:25Speaker 1: foundation of the world, but was revealed in this last
- 1:29Speaker 1: age for your sake, who threw him, our believers in God,
- 1:32Speaker 1: who raised him from the dead and gave him glory,
- 1:35Speaker 1: so that your faith and hope might be in God.
- 1:38Speaker 1: Seeing you have purified your souls in your obedience to
- 1:40Speaker 1: the truth through the spirit. In sincere brotherly affection, love
- 1:44Speaker 1: one another from the heart fervently, having been born again,
- 1:47Speaker 1: not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible through the Word
- 1:51Speaker 1: of God, which lives and remains forever for all. Flesh
- 1:55Speaker 1: is like grass and all of man's glory like the
- 1:57Speaker 1: flower in the grass. The grass withers and the flower falls,
- 2:01Speaker 1: but the Lord's word endoors forever. This is the word
- 2:04Speaker 1: of good News, which was preached to you. So far
- 2:09Speaker 1: in the Book of First Peter, we've been covering a
- 2:11Speaker 1: couple concepts, the first one being that Peter is writing
- 2:14Speaker 1: to people who are quote unquote living as foreigners, and
- 2:19Speaker 1: he addresses that again today in the passage that we
- 2:22Speaker 1: just read. And he's also talking about Jesus's sacrifice. You know,
- 2:27Speaker 1: I don't know about you guys. I mentioned this last
- 2:29Speaker 1: week on the podcast, But because I've been going to
- 2:31Speaker 1: church for so long, since I've been two years old,
- 2:36Speaker 1: I sometimes have a tendency to get bored with the
- 2:39Speaker 1: gospel message because I'm like, man, I want to hear
- 2:41Speaker 1: about something else, Like I want to hear about you know,
- 2:44Speaker 1: deep apologetics or you know, theological discussions, like I want
- 2:48Speaker 1: to hear about that kind of stuff instead of just
- 2:51Speaker 1: the basic gospel message. And through that, I have a
- 2:54Speaker 1: tendency to take Jesus's sacrifice for granted. And we're never
- 2:58Speaker 1: supposed to take jesus sacrifice for granted, because it is
- 3:02Speaker 1: the most important thing. Is what everything in scripture hinges
- 3:05Speaker 1: on is Jesus's sacrifice for humanity. Now, all that being said,
- 3:10Speaker 1: of course, there's nothing wrong with wanting more advanced topics.
- 3:15Speaker 1: There's nothing wrong with wanting you know, meteor discussions. I mean,
- 3:19Speaker 1: even in the Book of Hebrews, the author yelled at
- 3:22Speaker 1: the recipients of the letter because they were complacent in
- 3:26Speaker 1: their faith and they only wanted the milk. In fact,
- 3:28Speaker 1: they weren't even able to move into the meteor topics
- 3:31Speaker 1: because they didn't know any of the basics of Christianity,
- 3:35Speaker 1: and so the author was like, you guys should be
- 3:37Speaker 1: teaching other people the basics of Christianity, and yet I
- 3:41Speaker 1: have to go through these things, like these fundamental things
- 3:43Speaker 1: all over again. You guys need to move past the
- 3:46Speaker 1: milk like babies and move into the meat like adults.
- 3:51Speaker 1: So there is nothing wrong with desiring meat when it
- 3:54Speaker 1: comes to biblical topics. But in our desire for meat,
- 3:59Speaker 1: we also can't take Jesus's sacrifice for granted and get
- 4:03Speaker 1: bored with it or anything like that, because it really
- 4:06Speaker 1: is pretty much the most important thing that we can
- 4:09Speaker 1: ever know, learn and understand, and tell other people about
- 4:13Speaker 1: as well. So we should be looking at Jesus's sacrifice
- 4:16Speaker 1: as something special and beautiful instead of just boring and basic.
- 4:22Speaker 1: And I think that's what Peter is trying to remind
- 4:25Speaker 1: all of us readers, because don't forget, Peter was one
- 4:28Speaker 1: of the few people that was with Jesus right before
- 4:32Speaker 1: he was crucified. Now, Peter did not view Jesus's crucifixion. Unfortunately,
- 4:38Speaker 1: he ran away and denied Jesus three times. But even
- 4:43Speaker 1: the guilt of that of denying Jesus when he was
- 4:46Speaker 1: going to his death. I'm sure weighed very heavily on Peter.
- 4:50Speaker 1: And so he is telling all of us, don't do that.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Don't take Jesus's death for granted. It is a beautiful
- 4:57Speaker 1: thing that he has done for you. So it says
- 5:00Speaker 1: in verse seventeen, if you call on him as father,
- 5:04Speaker 1: who without respect of persons, judges according to each man's work,
- 5:08Speaker 1: past the time of your living as foreigners here in
- 5:11Speaker 1: reverent fear. So, as Christians, we are actually called to
- 5:16Speaker 1: live on this earth as foreigners, not as our permanent homes,
- 5:21Speaker 1: because we know that there is something better than this
- 5:25Speaker 1: earth waiting for us in eternity, in the afterlife. We
- 5:29Speaker 1: understand that we know that because of what Jesus has
- 5:32Speaker 1: done for us, this earth is temporary, This earth is
- 5:37Speaker 1: corrupted and passing away, and there is something even more special,
- 5:42Speaker 1: something perfect, that God is laying aside for all of
- 5:46Speaker 1: his people. So if we are calling on Jesus's name,
- 5:49Speaker 1: if we are calling God our father, then we need
- 5:53Speaker 1: to be living on this earth in reverent fear, as
- 5:57Speaker 1: temporary citizens, not placing all of our hope in this world.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Most Christians, even they place their hope in this earth,
- 6:04Speaker 1: hoping to receive some sort of utopia here on earth,
- 6:09Speaker 1: something better than what they currently have. They might do
- 6:13Speaker 1: this by placing all of their trust in a particular politician.
- 6:16Speaker 1: They might do this by constantly being unthankful for the
- 6:21Speaker 1: things that they have. They might be workaholics or greedy
- 6:24Speaker 1: in some cases, but a lot of people Christians included
- 6:28Speaker 1: myself included, throughout the years, have placed our hope in
- 6:32Speaker 1: this world when our hope should definitely be in the
- 6:36Speaker 1: earth to come. That is why Jesus tells us, do
- 6:39Speaker 1: not store up your treasures here on earth, but store
- 6:41Speaker 1: them up in heaven, where they can never be corrupted,
- 6:44Speaker 1: where they can never pass away. And that's actually what
- 6:47Speaker 1: Peter goes into right here, knowing that you were redeemed,
- 6:50Speaker 1: not with corruptible things like silver or gold from the
- 6:53Speaker 1: useless way of life handed down from your father's, but
- 6:56Speaker 1: with precious blood as of a lamb without blemish or spot,
- 7:00Speaker 1: the blood of Christ. So Peter uses that word redeemed here.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Redeemed means to be bought back. This is an Old
- 7:08Speaker 1: Testament concept that you're going to see a lot if
- 7:11Speaker 1: you go through the Old Testament laws. Human beings in
- 7:13Speaker 1: a lot of cases could be redeemed, specifically slaves that
- 7:17Speaker 1: sold themselves into slavery. A brother or a clan member
- 7:22Speaker 1: could buy them out of that slavery. That's called being redeemed.
- 7:26Speaker 1: There's another story, a famous story in the Book of Ruth,
- 7:29Speaker 1: where Ruth herself was redeemed. She was a widow and
- 7:33Speaker 1: she was bought back from that lifestyle to become Boaz's wife.
- 7:37Speaker 1: He redeemed her from poverty essentially. So redemption is something
- 7:42Speaker 1: you will commonly see in the Old Testament, and it's
- 7:44Speaker 1: a picture of what Jesus did for us, not in
- 7:48Speaker 1: the ways that the people in the Old Testament did,
- 7:50Speaker 1: because when the people in the Old Testament redeemed to
- 7:52Speaker 1: someone or something, they would pay for it with money,
- 7:56Speaker 1: with silver and gold. These things, Peter says, are actually
- 8:00Speaker 1: corruptible because they pass away over time. But Jesus redeemed
- 8:05Speaker 1: us not with corruptible silver and gold, but with something incorruptible,
- 8:10Speaker 1: something that can never go away, which is his own blood,
- 8:14Speaker 1: his life. He poured out his life for all of
- 8:18Speaker 1: us so he could buy us back from something. And
- 8:21Speaker 1: what is that thing that he bought us back from
- 8:23Speaker 1: It says that Jesus took the full wrath of God
- 8:27Speaker 1: so that you and I don't have to. In other words,
- 8:30Speaker 1: he redeemed us. He bought us back from eternal death
- 8:34Speaker 1: and separation from God. And that's the thing, you know,
- 8:37Speaker 1: Sometimes we don't think about the emotional side, the spiritual
- 8:43Speaker 1: side of what Jesus did when he went to the cross.
- 8:46Speaker 1: We often focus only on the torture and suffering, like
- 8:50Speaker 1: physical suffering that he experienced. But it was something so
- 8:53Speaker 1: much more than the physical suffering. There was something else
- 8:57Speaker 1: that Jesus was doing up on that cross. It wasn't
- 9:01Speaker 1: just about the physical suffering. Because there have been people
- 9:05Speaker 1: throughout time that have gone through crucifixion and have suffered
- 9:10Speaker 1: in similar ways that Jesus did. There are people who
- 9:13Speaker 1: are tortured in excruciating and extreme ways because of their
- 9:17Speaker 1: faith for years and years and years on end. But
- 9:22Speaker 1: these people, though they physically suffered in similar ways that
- 9:26Speaker 1: Jesus did, they still did not experience the spiritual and
- 9:31Speaker 1: emotional consequences of taking God's wrath on themselves. This is
- 9:37Speaker 1: something that no Christian, no matter how much they're tortured
- 9:40Speaker 1: here on Earth can ever understand or suffer through. You know,
- 9:45Speaker 1: people who emotionally suffer sometimes would rather physically suffer than
- 9:51Speaker 1: go through the emotional torture, which is why some people
- 9:55Speaker 1: will physically hurt themselves in order to relieve some of
- 9:59Speaker 1: that emotional suffer that they're experiencing. I mean, think about
- 10:02Speaker 1: David in the Old Testament. He wrote a large portion
- 10:06Speaker 1: of the Psalms. And when you look at David's story,
- 10:09Speaker 1: he didn't have a lot of physical suffering, almost not
- 10:12Speaker 1: at all actually that we know of, as Saul was
- 10:15Speaker 1: never able to physically hurt David. He was never tortured
- 10:18Speaker 1: or beaten or seriously injured or hurt that we know of.
- 10:23Speaker 1: But David was betrayed and he was hurt, and family
- 10:28Speaker 1: was taken away from him, and people just stabbed him
- 10:31Speaker 1: in the back, left and right, and he had to
- 10:33Speaker 1: flee his home, he had to be a fugitive in
- 10:36Speaker 1: his own country. And through this emotional trauma that David suffered,
- 10:41Speaker 1: he was writing some of the most beautiful psalms that
- 10:44Speaker 1: Jesus himself was quoting up on the Cross. And that
- 10:48Speaker 1: shows you that emotional suffering sometimes is and can be
- 10:54Speaker 1: just as bad if not sometimes worse than physical suffering
- 10:58Speaker 1: and physical trauma. So Jesus was experiencing both up on
- 11:02Speaker 1: that cross, not just the tortuous physical suffering of the
- 11:06Speaker 1: crucifixion and his wounds being exposed to the elements and
- 11:11Speaker 1: to the birds, and to the poking and prodding of
- 11:15Speaker 1: the Roman soldiers. Yes, he was physically experiencing all those things,
- 11:19Speaker 1: but there was also a spiritual and emotional suffering that
- 11:23Speaker 1: Jesus was going through that none of us will ever
- 11:26Speaker 1: be able to understand. And Jesus took all of that
- 11:30Speaker 1: suffering on himself willingly so that we did not have
- 11:35Speaker 1: to do it. And he was a completely innocent man
- 11:39Speaker 1: throughout all of this. And Peter mentions that he says,
- 11:44Speaker 1: this blood was precious in verse nineteen, as of a
- 11:47Speaker 1: lamb without blemish or spot, the blood of Christ, who
- 11:52Speaker 1: was foreknown, indeed before the foundation of the world, but
- 11:56Speaker 1: was revealed in this last age for your sake through him,
- 12:00Speaker 1: our believers in God, who raised him from the dead
- 12:03Speaker 1: and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope
- 12:05Speaker 1: might be in God. So, in other words, Jesus was
- 12:09Speaker 1: perfectly innocent, just as a little lamb is so innocent
- 12:14Speaker 1: and never did anything wrong in its entire life. Jesus
- 12:18Speaker 1: was like that lamb. I believe it's Isaiah fifty three
- 12:21Speaker 1: that says that Jesus was like a lamb being led
- 12:25Speaker 1: to the slaughter, who did not open his mouth, but
- 12:29Speaker 1: he went willingly to that slaughter, just as a little
- 12:32Speaker 1: lamb is led by a leash to the slaughter and
- 12:35Speaker 1: is silent the entire time. So Jesus was also silent
- 12:40Speaker 1: going to the cross. And Jesus took on all of
- 12:43Speaker 1: this suffering on our behalf. He literally spilled his precious
- 12:49Speaker 1: blood for you and for me. He bought us back
- 12:53Speaker 1: with it. And so as Christians, we need to be
- 12:57Speaker 1: living knowing what Jesus has done for us, and being
- 13:00Speaker 1: thankful for what Jesus has done for us, reflecting on it,
- 13:04Speaker 1: understanding that Jesus redeemed us, he bought us back from
- 13:08Speaker 1: that eternal death. And here's the interesting thing in verse twenty,
- 13:13Speaker 1: Jesus knew that he had to do this before the
- 13:17Speaker 1: foundation of the world, so, in other words, before Earth
- 13:20Speaker 1: was evenated, which which, by the way, it says multiple
- 13:24Speaker 1: times in scripture that Jesus himself was the one who
- 13:27Speaker 1: created everything. Everything was created through Jesus, so before the
- 13:32Speaker 1: earth was even formed, Jesus knew that this is what
- 13:37Speaker 1: he was going to have to do when he created humanity.
- 13:41Speaker 1: So he was fore known before the foundation of the world,
- 13:45Speaker 1: but later on was revealed in this last age for
- 13:49Speaker 1: your sake, who threw him, our believers in God, who
- 13:52Speaker 1: raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so
- 13:54Speaker 1: that your faith and hope might be in God. So
- 13:58Speaker 1: Jesus knew what he was going to have to do
- 14:00Speaker 1: before he even formed the earth. Because God is all knowing,
- 14:05Speaker 1: he knew everything that would happen. So he knew that
- 14:09Speaker 1: human beings were going to fall, and he knew that
- 14:12Speaker 1: his son Jesus was going to have to take on
- 14:15Speaker 1: the burden of redeeming us from our sin and eternal death.
- 14:21Speaker 1: And before Jesus came down to earth, all of this
- 14:24Speaker 1: was secret. Nobody quite understood any of this. In fact,
- 14:28Speaker 1: Peter talked about the prophets in verse ten, searching diligently
- 14:33Speaker 1: about these things. They knew that a Messiah was going
- 14:35Speaker 1: to come, but the prophets themselves didn't understand who, or when,
- 14:40Speaker 1: or what it was going to look like exactly. They
- 14:42Speaker 1: just knew that a salvation was coming, that a Messiah
- 14:46Speaker 1: was coming, and they earnestly desired to look into these things.
- 14:50Speaker 1: But now these things have been revealed to each one
- 14:52Speaker 1: of us, Peter says that your faith and your hope
- 14:56Speaker 1: might be in God. So now in verse twenty two,
- 15:00Speaker 1: knowing all of these things, he says, seeing that you
- 15:03Speaker 1: have purified your souls in your obedience to the truth
- 15:06Speaker 1: through the Spirit, in sincere brotherly affection, love one another
- 15:10Speaker 1: from the heart fervently, having been born again, not a
- 15:13Speaker 1: corruptible seed, but of the incorruptible, through the Word of God,
- 15:17Speaker 1: which lives and remains forever. So that's the call to action.
- 15:22Speaker 1: Knowing that Jesus loved us with this incredible love while
- 15:26Speaker 1: you and I were yet sinners, Christ died for us,
- 15:29Speaker 1: when we are still enemies of Jesus. He came down
- 15:32Speaker 1: to earth and he died for us. So, knowing that
- 15:35Speaker 1: Jesus has that kind of love for each and every
- 15:39Speaker 1: one of us, we can surely show some love to
- 15:43Speaker 1: our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, having sincere brotherly
- 15:49Speaker 1: affection for them. This is the call to action. Love
- 15:53Speaker 1: one another from the heart fervently. You know a lot
- 15:56Speaker 1: of people say that love is in action, and that
- 16:00Speaker 1: is true. Love is certainly an action, but is it
- 16:04Speaker 1: really loving if you just can't stand somebody right when
- 16:08Speaker 1: you're just like, oh, I hate that person, I can't
- 16:10Speaker 1: stand them. But then they call you up and they're like, hey,
- 16:13Speaker 1: I really need a favor. I'm kind of in dire straits.
- 16:17Speaker 1: Can you please help me out with this thing? And
- 16:19Speaker 1: you're like, yeah, you know, I don't really want to
- 16:21Speaker 1: do it, but yes, I will absolutely do this. And
- 16:24Speaker 1: you go and do that thing while hating this person
- 16:27Speaker 1: in your heart the entire time, even though you're showing
- 16:30Speaker 1: the action of love toward them, Are you really loving
- 16:33Speaker 1: that person? The answer is no, because in your heart
- 16:39Speaker 1: you kind of hate this person. There are a lot
- 16:41Speaker 1: of good actors out there who do very nice things
- 16:44Speaker 1: for people but genuinely have no love in their hearts.
- 16:48Speaker 1: So love is more than an action. It's also an action,
- 16:51Speaker 1: but it's more than that. That's why Peter says, right here,
- 16:55Speaker 1: love one another from the heart fervently, true love star
- 17:00Speaker 1: in the heart. And how do you love somebody that
- 17:02Speaker 1: is just being in your mind unlovable? How do you
- 17:07Speaker 1: love those people you have to be unified with Jesus
- 17:11Speaker 1: himself in order to show a true and genuine love.
- 17:17Speaker 1: If you want to know what love is, that's found
- 17:20Speaker 1: in One Corinthians thirteen, verses four through seven. Love is
- 17:24Speaker 1: patient and is kind. Love doesn't envy. Love doesn't brag.
- 17:29Speaker 1: It is not proud, It doesn't behave itself inappropriately. It
- 17:33Speaker 1: doesn't seek its own way. It's not provoked. It takes
- 17:36Speaker 1: no account of evil. It doesn't rejoice in unrighteousness, but
- 17:40Speaker 1: rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things,
- 17:45Speaker 1: hopes all things, and endores all things. That's what love is.
- 17:49Speaker 1: And those things start in the heart. Patience and kindness
- 17:53Speaker 1: and not seeking your own way, these things start in
- 17:56Speaker 1: the heart. So the only way we can truly love
- 17:59Speaker 1: like that, even for people who are lovable in our minds.
- 18:02Speaker 1: You know, even I love my husband so much, but
- 18:04Speaker 1: even he ticks me off, and sometimes I am not
- 18:09Speaker 1: the most loving toward him because I get irritated. So
- 18:12Speaker 1: we have to be unified with Jesus in order to
- 18:16Speaker 1: truly love our brothers and sisters in Christ. And that's
- 18:20Speaker 1: exactly what Peter alludes to right here in One Peter
- 18:23Speaker 1: one twenty three. We do this by having been born again,
- 18:28Speaker 1: not of a corruptible seed in other words, you know,
- 18:31Speaker 1: our earthly mothers, but of an incorruptible through the Word
- 18:35Speaker 1: of God, which lives and remains forever. And this is
- 18:39Speaker 1: something that we talked about a few episodes back in
- 18:43Speaker 1: one Peter one, I think it was one through nine.
- 18:45Speaker 1: We talked about this idea of being born again, which
- 18:48Speaker 1: basically means becoming a new creation in Christ. And that
- 18:54Speaker 1: is how when we are unified with Christ in that way,
- 18:57Speaker 1: that is how we truly learn to have love for
- 19:01Speaker 1: our fellow brothers and sisters, and how we learn to
- 19:04Speaker 1: have obedience to the truth as well, which is another
- 19:07Speaker 1: thing that Peter says right here in verse twenty two.
- 19:10Speaker 1: But Peter continues to conclude in verse twenty four. For
- 19:13Speaker 1: all fleshes like grass and all of man's glory, like
- 19:16Speaker 1: the flower in the grass, the grass withers and the
- 19:19Speaker 1: flower falls, but the Lord's word endoors forever. This is
- 19:24Speaker 1: the word of good News which was preached to you.
- 19:27Speaker 1: So this goes back to the idea that everything here
- 19:29Speaker 1: on earth is temporary. Any kind of glory that we
- 19:33Speaker 1: will receive here on earth is basically like a flower
- 19:38Speaker 1: out in the field. Right now, in my backyard, the
- 19:41Speaker 1: cardinal flowers are blooming, and I love cardinal flowers. They're
- 19:45Speaker 1: so bright red and so pretty. But cardinal flowers, even
- 19:50Speaker 1: though they last for a pretty long time all season,
- 19:53Speaker 1: they eventually die. And that's it. That is how temporary,
- 19:58Speaker 1: Peter says are lives are, And like the glory of
- 20:01Speaker 1: our lives is just like a breath, like a flower
- 20:05Speaker 1: that's there for a little while and then it's gone.
- 20:09Speaker 1: So we should not be putting our hope in this
- 20:12Speaker 1: world that passes away very quickly, but we should be
- 20:15Speaker 1: putting our hope in Jesus, who grants us eternal life
- 20:19Speaker 1: that will never fade away. The Lord's word endorrees forever,
- 20:23Speaker 1: is what Peter says right here, And this word he
- 20:26Speaker 1: clarifies is the good news which was preached to you.
- 20:31Speaker 1: So the gospel message, which is the entire foundation of Christianity,
- 20:36Speaker 1: Jesus came to earth to redeem us of our sins,
- 20:40Speaker 1: and he rose again to give us new life. That
- 20:43Speaker 1: is the gospel message that is never going to fade away, never,
- 20:49Speaker 1: not throughout all of eternity. Jesus's sacrifice is one and
- 20:53Speaker 1: done for all of eternity. So once we believe in Jesus,
- 20:58Speaker 1: we are redeemed. We don't have to experience the eternal
- 21:01Speaker 1: death that we would have before we believed in Jesus.
- 21:05Speaker 1: Jesus took that eternal death on himself, and that gospel
- 21:09Speaker 1: message is never going to fade away. Well, thank you
- 21:15Speaker 1: guys so much for listening to the end of the
- 21:18Speaker 1: episode with me and finishing out First Peter Chapter one.
- 21:23Speaker 1: I'm going to move to the last ad break here
- 21:25Speaker 1: in just one moment, and after that, I'm going to
- 21:27Speaker 1: close out the episode by talking about how do we
- 21:30Speaker 1: really put our treasures up in heaven instead of here
- 21:34Speaker 1: on this earth? So please listen to this advertisement and
- 21:37Speaker 1: I'll be back right after that. So how do we
- 21:42Speaker 1: put our treasures up in heaven instead of here on
- 21:45Speaker 1: this earth? Because I think some people have a hard
- 21:48Speaker 1: time with this idea and maybe get sort of stuck
- 21:51Speaker 1: in the mud a little bit where they're like, well,
- 21:53Speaker 1: can I want anything on earth? Can I try to
- 21:56Speaker 1: achieve anything? Should I vote? Should I have any goals
- 22:01Speaker 1: or work toward anything in life? Well, a good answer
- 22:03Speaker 1: to all of this, I believe, is reading through the
- 22:07Speaker 1: Book of Proverbs, because the Book of Proverbs has an
- 22:10Speaker 1: excellent balance of earthly achievement and also looking towards the heavenly,
- 22:18Speaker 1: because we do live on this earth, and we do
- 22:21Speaker 1: have to do certain things, and God calls us to
- 22:24Speaker 1: certain positions in life, and so I don't think we
- 22:28Speaker 1: necessarily have to sit around just waiting for the day
- 22:31Speaker 1: of our death, only selling all of our possessions all
- 22:34Speaker 1: the time. That's called the Christian poverty movement. That's not
- 22:38Speaker 1: necessarily biblical. It says in scripture that wealth is from
- 22:42Speaker 1: the Lord. It says in scripture that success is from
- 22:44Speaker 1: the Lord. I just read that verse recently. God gives
- 22:48Speaker 1: us these things, and he puts us in certain positions
- 22:51Speaker 1: so that we can effectively minister to others and evangelize
- 22:57Speaker 1: to them based upon the position that God puts us in.
- 23:00Speaker 1: So how do we store up our treasures in heaven? Well, again,
- 23:03Speaker 1: reading through the Book of Proverbs, we make sure first
- 23:06Speaker 1: and foremost that we put God first in our lives
- 23:09Speaker 1: with every single thing that we do. That is how
- 23:13Speaker 1: we store up our treasures in heaven. We submit to
- 23:16Speaker 1: God's will and we become unified with Christ. All right,
