Shamus: So what's going on, bud? How was your day? Herbie: Hell was magical. It was beautiful out, but then it got hot. that was staring at the kayak once again and decided not to get in the goddamn thing. But other than that, was nice. Oh yeah. I keep looking at mine. I'm just like, it's like, it's so pretty, but I'm a little dork decals on it. Shamus: I gotta dig mine out of the garage. ⁓ I'll get to I get it. I started cleaning up the backyard and thought to myself It's time to dig out the projector get the projector screen ready So we can do some outdoor movie nights ⁓ Herbie: Well, it's springtime. That's, know, it's time for like, you know, the spring cleaning, getting everything ready. Another reason why to give the scooper heroes a call. Cause if everyone's going to want to open up their backyards, if you have a dog to have a little barbecues and do the little movie nights out back. It's a good idea to do, man. Shamus: when I was looking for the projector stuff today I was kind of it kind of took me back a little bit when you were a kid Did your family do like a movie night or anything like that? Herbie: Yeah, like when the first started, you know, the VHS came out, you know, that was like expensive, but we got it. And I was like, came right after like HBO. So I remember like, or like the first movie that we got, ⁓ also my cousin after a little while actually worked in a video store. So we have like a nice ample supply of movies coming in. was, you know, movie night was not just like a family movie night, but we would have like extended family, like, you know, my cousins, my aunts, you know, they'll all get together to have like drinks and sleepovers normally be like on a Friday night. So it was like, you know, long day, week at school. And then, you know, everyone gets a pick like a movie. And then you just enjoy your weekend with the family night of watching the VHS tapes, man. Shamus: Yeah, it's amazing that, you know, as you get older, you think like you're the only family that does stuff like this. But when you get to talking to people you know, I thought for a minute there, like we had it was like the McKnight plan. Yeah. My dad would pick us up from whether it St. Henry's or St. It was mostly when we were St. Pete's and Riverside, like here in elementary school. ⁓ He pick me, my brother and my sister up. ⁓ And before left there. There was a pizza joint right across street, our narrows. It's still there, by the way. I think they just celebrated their like 50 or 60th anniversary. He would go in there and be like, I'm to pick up a pizza at like five o'clock. Yeah. We get out of school like 233 and we all climb into his truck. And we'd either shoot out the West Coast video up on Route 130 in Delran or Sinaminsen. And it's like right on that borderline area. Yeah. Or we go to R.S. video right in Riverside when that opened up. Herbie: Nice, and remember West Coast would give you like that free bag of popcorn? Shamus: Yeah, man. And then towards the end of like when I was older, Blockbuster opened up and I got I love I'm a good blockbuster man. Herbie: Yeah, Blockbuster was great too, because they had like the drop off flap. You know, a lot of times like we were always good with like bringing the movies back. We were like, everyone like back in the day, sometimes would get like over over renty or they would like try to rent like six movies and they would never really watch all of them. So like either they bring some back or they not bring any of them back and pay off to pay the late charges. and all that stuff. But if you always notice, like, unfortunately that you thought that the family was only having that plan when you went in the video stores, it was jam packed. So basically, like everybody in the family, if you're a family of four or three, everyone had a fan out. Everyone knew what section they were like action or romance, you know, whatever one did you get. And also, yeah, kept an eye out for like that one bin with the free posters because you wanted a couple of the posters. So yeah, I some of those like movie posters in my room. Shamus: Yeah, my sister always scored with that because she was a huge horror fan. and my sister always. I mean, and I'm not just talking. Like the new stuff at the time was like, you know, a nightmare. No, I'm straight or like she would go back to like Boris Karloff. Oh, really? The universal. Like she would get creature. But yeah, she was my I swear to Christ to this day and in more ways than one, she is my father's daughter because they both loved all that creature feature shit like the the universal monsters. And she would always come up with something like weird either weird or classic. Yeah Herbie: I think for me, like the classic ones, I always loved the creature from the Black Lagoon. really? I had a creature from the Black Shamus: And I was really she had like all the little action figures too. And she had that one, but she would always go over to after she picked out her movie, she would go to, like I said, the free poster bin. Yeah. And it was always like them crazy like you could never get like RoboCop or Terminator, but she would pull out like Phantasm 2 and just like, yes, I like it. Put it on our wall. Yeah. So like she always like always scored with the horror movie posters and stuff. ⁓ Most of the time I would get something funny, you know. Herbie: to salads. Shamus: comedy or action and stuff like that. then my dad would usually, I guess they alternate it because sometimes like I'd see him is before cell phones before you had like text message. ⁓ yeah. Or like the notes on your phone. Like he'd pull out his little, he had like that little book in his pocket. He pulled out a look and my mom either wrote something like, you know, beaches or fucking, ⁓ against all odds or, know, Herbie: Terry, it's a fire. Shamus: Then there were some times he walked in and he was like, now we doing the book this week, He would grab something. So ⁓ but yeah, then we would get home and ⁓ me, my sister or my brother was there. ⁓ We'd flip a coin. Yeah. We if the three of us were there, we'd have to choose between two movies and then we flip a coin to see which one we watch. Yeah. And then after that, we usually went to bed and my parents watch whatever they were going to watch. ⁓ Herbie: That was always there was always that adult movie that you had to go to bed and you know Shamus: ⁓ yeah, it was usually something like mask or scarface. Yeah, something like that. If my dad was picking. Herbie: Yeah, they're having drinks and everything. Yeah. It's like when we did the movie night, like my, ⁓ I'd be my mom, me, my mom and my dad. So I dating back to, used to go to TNS video in Lumberton and it was like very, it was like, you know, like a mom and pops type shop. that was pretty much. Shamus: as as ⁓ Herbie: And what we did, we used to go to West Coast video, we used to like TNS video actually was the first one that opened up like around in our area. So we were constantly there and you know, you had your membership number, you had your membership card. ⁓ you know, you knew where, the areas were. if, know, if you, would, you would race to those movies to make sure like your movies there, cause you wanted to watch that. Cause maybe last week, ⁓ Robo cop two wasn't there. So everyone just fan out and grab their stuff. And then, you know, you meet your dad at the back at the, the counter to get your movies. But my aunt and her kids would come over too. So they would have like, you know, drinks, you know, it'd be like around like seven o'clock or whatever. So it's like for me, movie night, I was allowed to watch two movies. The kids would go to bed and then, know, the adults would be drinking. My aunt would be drinking Manhattan's. My dad would drink and like vodka and cranberries. ⁓ It was just nice, as far as like, matter of fact, what was your first movie that you saw? What was the first movie you guys rented? Shamus: I mean, I could even we rented so much because my mother was a huge move like before DVDs came out, VHS tapes and we had over 500 like when she go to Kmart or Clover back in those days, they have the clearance bins and like, you know, $2. That's where I kiss meets the Phantom of the Park. It was like two bucks. my. Herbie: down. Shamus: I couldn't even tell you the first movie like we actually rented and watched at home. I do vaguely remember. I think we talked about it when Jay was here ⁓ and check those guys out if you love movies. The exciting and new podcast. I do remember that little wire being hooked to the little remote control thing, but I don't really remember. ⁓ Herbie: Remember that. Yeah. Shamus: The first thing I really remember about VHS movies is being disappointing when I went to go grab a movie and it wasn't there and I was like, ⁓ yes. And then I never realized like, okay, they only have a certain amount of these, so you got to get there early. So like you said, you would scramble. Herbie: Back then, basically, every copy was just one copy, unless it was a really popular movie, then they might have a couple of tapes. Shamus: first movie I remember being like I remember thinking myself, holy shit, this has got to be a big deal. Was that movie Ghost with Demi Moore and Patrick's Way? Because when you walked in, it had its own wall. ⁓ yeah. And out of the 50 or 60 copies, they were all gone for like weeks. Like I don't remember. And I was just kind of like, holy. And I didn't give a shit because I mean, Debbie Moore is cute, but I mean. Herbie: Move! It was ghost. Shamus: Girl, that's the shit my dad had written in his pocket. Yeah. I was looking for either, you know, an action movie or I was over in the music section looking for, you know, my crew, decadent, decadence, like all their videos Herbie: Well, also not only that, too, you also forgot about like that forbidden section with the curtain. ⁓ Shamus: Yeah, and shoved in there one brother. My brother's like go check that out man. So like I like what to look at the curtain, you know, like you're all yeah, he just ⁓ just lost ⁓ I looked up and there were some six foot cardboard cut out of whoever was big back in those days naked I was just kind of like holy shit, dude. He pushed me right to heaven. ⁓ man. This great. Also, I like you just feel that hand come through the ⁓ Herbie: Really? Grab your shirt, yank you out. Shamus: My dad was just like, if your mom's not gonna let me go back there, you can't go back there. I was like, all right, dude. Herbie: I actually remember those forbidden sections. They even had one in Japan which was crazy. ⁓ There was this big department store called Don Quijote. So it's basically a department store and a grocery store. And it was almost like a Walmart. Shamus: Wait a minute. This isn't Japan. Yeah. And they named a store after historic Mexican. Herbie: It was great though, but like the department store section, I believe it was like three levels. So like the middle department store section actually did have like that forbidden section, but it wasn't just movies. It was also like items and toys, stuff like that. Yeah. Had the little red curtain and everything, man. Cause that was like, you know, out of bounds, man. It was for me, I never really looked out getting close to it. I mean, I got closer, but like when I go with my parents, my mom was there, you know, Shamus: Yeah, they get a little weird in Japan. Herbie: So she was always watching where I was going. And, a lot of times, like back then, it was like kind of like frowned upon for like little kids to try to run in there. So even like the workers would keep an eye out and all that stuff. wouldn't. We didn't get too many entanglements of like, you know, pulling yanking kids out of there. But I think I remember my first movie. It was a basket case. It's like the shittiest like horror movie. Shamus: Absolutely. Why is that familiar? was gonna say, it's up to my sister where it's ready. Herbie: Oh, yeah, it's what claymation that's another thing too because back in the day like you you basically you didn't really know what the movie was but you judge it by the cover and if the Shamus: That's how music was too back then. That's how I got into Iron Maiden. Greatest album covers of all time. Herbie: Yeah, but at least the music was good like there were like I was people that grew up in our in our area you guys probably remember like there's some of these Movies that had really cool art on on the cover and the movie was just completely shit B movie, know in basket case I love it because it like it was just completely shit It was done with like claymation and but it was just like a goofy horror movie with like Balao girl It was just like this Siamese twin with like this big he was like a tumor growing off the size of Shamus: I kind of remember that's a movie my sister already got. Herbie: Like a bag of shit with arms and some teeth that he's just running around, just like murdering people from a basket. It was great. Shamus: And it's amazing because I mean, like most of the stuff I ran it was stuff that was like huge blockbuster hits. Yeah. No, like when Beverly Hills Cop first came out or, you know, Revenge of the Nerds. Yeah. Stuff like that. Like some of the stuff I remember more of the stuff my sister got because of shit like that. Like Deadly Friend. ⁓ that was great. The girlfriend dies. He puts the. Yeah. He put the computer chip in her brain out of his robot and she came back to life and she drew that basketball to heads. The guy's head. Herbie: I Swanson was... Yeah, that was actually the the the girl that the the lady that she killed was actually what's her face from the goonies and throw mama from the train? That actress. ⁓ yeah, it's like just blew her head up Shamus: The old lady. Yeah. was thinking, what the hell was that name? She calls all the time and please throw them over. Herbie: He's like, this is your cousin Patty. He's like, you don't have a cousin Patty. He's like, you f---- me. Shamus: What was another one and then I it's amazing that some of these have such cult followings because when I saw him as a kid I'm like does it don't shit ever but then like Not only Jay, but there's a buddy of mine. used to work with with the state John He's a huge hard guy, but like he likes all the so like when my sister ran a killer clowns from out of space Or attack of the killer tomatoes. ⁓ yeah, I'm like man. Those are dumb it but like there's a huge Herbie: great movie. Shamus: cult following to these movies now they live on forever because they're legendary. Herbie: Wow. that's basically like when we started doing all this stuff, really, it was basically HBO. That's when we saw the movies and they would only show like those move those like certain amount of movies. So then you get like, like it maybe it might have bombed in movie theater, then it went to cable, then it went to VHS. And I think that's where a lot of those movies that kind of bombed on both arenas just had like a huge like run in VHS rentals, you know. Shamus: Yeah, a month. Yeah. Yeah, I remember a lot of her movies. got more than the ones I got. Herbie: like, ⁓ my, I was telling you, my cousin actually worked at a video store after a while. This was like when it was, you know, family movie night was like practically every Friday. So when he used to work at the video store, he would actually be in charge of actually transporting movies to other locations. Cause you know, they, guess they had like three other stores. So he'd stay over our house like Friday night and we get it just like, he would have cases of movies in his, in his, ⁓ little gremlin car. Remember the, like those old gremlins? Shamus: Yeah, they didn't even see Gremlin. I'm a car guy, so I can... Herbie: ⁓ he had that. He had to have like the green one, man. And it was just, and this goddamn back hatch was like filled with like boxes of movies. And we just get to pick out a bunch of just random movies. And of course, like, you know, he had to rewind them and stuff. And you don't remember be kind rewind. Shamus: It's a Wayne's World car. ⁓ yeah, you remember that? ⁓ yeah. They would charge you a fee if you didn't rewind. I remember that shit was so serious. My parents had to rewind her. It was, and I think we talked about that with Jay too. Like there was this thing on the side for all you kids at home. ⁓ There was this thing on the side of our entertainment center. Like after you got done watching the movie and instead of rewinding it in there and burning up your VCR, you would take it out and put it into this thing. And its only purpose was to rewind the movie. Yeah. And my dad said, this is the best thing I ever bought. And I was like, what do mean? He's like, for $20, I don't have to pay all these rewind fees that you kids forget, you know, forget to rewind the goddamn thing. So I could just put it in there, rewind it in two minutes. And I'm out the door with it. So apparently it paid for itself in like the first three months. Herbie: There's a lot of families that didn't rewind shit because like you start movie night and then you put on the movie and for some reason it might be halfway through the movie like Jesus Christ. So you got to stop rewind it. At least I know how like Jason, what Jason Voorhees looks like in part three when he takes his mask off and you're like, ⁓ crap. Shamus: one of the first movies that scared the ⁓ shit out of me. ⁓ And I don't think it gets enough credit it got so ridiculous time. That first nightmare on Elm Street, ⁓ when you really, when he first shows up and he's walking down that chasing that chick and his arms start, like you can't see him, ⁓ but you just see that he's like, he teared up. And they're just ooh. Herbie: That's a great scene. He's like kind of chasing her. Shamus: That whole movie like They could have done it. Don't get me wrong Robert England's great. Yeah, that character is iconic ⁓ Part two sucked three was great dream warriors But then it just kind of like I think it's six or seven He's had a pool party and broad daylight chasing people weren't like I read it, but that first one man I remember watching that VHS thinking myself Herbie: was definitely more like he was definitely more evil and more creepy and Shamus: But it was more mysterious too. Like, and I do appreciate that he did get kind of a sense of humor. But like that first one, it was no nonsense. It was, and it was why like that scene, what a lot of people don't realize that Johnny Depp in the bedroom scene where he sucked into the bed and that thing of blood. I was just like, ⁓ I don't think I slept for like a week. Herbie: comedy puns Well, Kevin Bacon was in the first Friday 13th. Yeah. He was the one that got impaled with the arrow, like under from under the bed. ⁓ my God. Yeah. Right through his neck. Just all these crazy like, you all these like did all these. Shamus: What was Jennifer Aniston's first movie? Was Leprechaun? Herbie: Yeah Shamus: My buddy Jimmy's listening. Yes, she is fat. Yeah. For years, every time he was absolutely in love with Jennifer Addison. He had like pictures of her in his room, like in the barracks. Really? And I would just like, oh, dude, what is he? You are fat girls. He like, what are you talking about? Like, that is the fattest bitch. You fucking brain. So like I think in our last military unit like friends was on TV when we got back from like whatever we're doing like dinner or something like that and like the 20 of us roll in and somebody turned on the TV and she was on and I was just like, ⁓ I'm gonna throw up. My one buddy was like, what are you talking? And he was like, don't don't don't even fucking entertain this. ⁓ I was just like, look at ⁓ But yeah, her first movie was ⁓ Herbie: Matter of fact, the that plays the leprechaun is work done that it was in Willow and his first role was wicked in Return of the Jedi as the little Ewok. Oh yeah, yeah, I think I got him, Shamus: Yeah, I didn't know that. Yeah. He's still alive. I think they're doing another one. ⁓ yeah. Herbie: That's another episode we're going to do too is like ⁓ Star Wars, May the fourth. Shamus: Yeah, that's coming up, man. We got all kinds of stuff planned for that. Herbie: Did you ever like have like a big VHS collection of movies or just? Shamus: I was gonna say my mom had like... Herbie: I think everyone had like that one big entertainment center. Yeah. All your movies on there. Shamus: And you know what? A lot of those are worth money now because a buddy of mine, he's actually coming on to I don't know if we're to talk about this, but they were saying that like a lot like the Star Wars thing, the first three episode four, five and six. Yeah. If you bought that box set like the 80s or 90s. Yeah. Like the 10 year or the 15 year anniversary stuff. Because Disney went so soft, I guess. I don't want to say anything to piss anybody off. They took some stuff out of the movie. That's not, you can't find it anywhere else. So if you have those VHS tapes, they're worth money. ⁓ There's some movies you just can't find, like Jay said, Lucas, you were saying that you can't find. ⁓ No, the one we were just talking about, you said can't find right before we came on. Herbie: So I mean, why not find an Geez. Now I'm just drawing a blank. Shamus: couldn't stream. You couldn't find it streaming anywhere. ⁓ Herbie: ⁓ six pack with the kenny rogers Shamus: I mean, like some of those movies, if they're not streaming anywhere, you just don't have access to them because there's no more blockbuster and stuff like that. So what my buddy is doing is he's collecting. He was like, you got DVDs and just like my mother, I'd go to Blockbuster on a Friday night, man. I'd grab four or five movies out of the five hour bin and then rent a movie. And if I liked that movie, I waiting for it. I got thou like a thousand DVDs upstairs. Yeah, me too. And he was just like. Are you going to do anything with them? I was like, if you're collecting them, dude, to preserve all this shit, then yeah, you can have them But the VHS, you know, I kind of threw out. Yeah. Well, yeah. And I did have that Star Wars three pack. ⁓ Herbie: my god, I think everyone did back then because it was just like, you know, a dime a dozen, Shamus: Yeah, a lot of it. I didn't realize this. A lot of those Disney movies that were VHS because Disney always does that thing. And I didn't notice because I'm not a Disney guy. My whole family used to go to Disney every year. Yeah. And I just never we always went camping when we were kids. But as we got older, my brother had his kids. He wanted to start going to Disney. So my mom would go and I was still stayed home and took care of dogs. But they were my mom would always like by like even when I was in the army, I'd come home and. she'd come over in the store and they were like drop Cinderella on the table or Snow White. I'm like, what the? mean, first of all, you have three nephews. Which one of these fags? Cinderella. So she was like, no, no, no, they all release these like every 10 years. Like it goes back into the. And I'm like, why? And she was like, yeah, and then, you know, you can't get it for like 10, 15 years. And I was like, so those like it's crazy. Like some of the stuff. Herbie: He's gonna watch it. All anniversary edition. ⁓ Shamus: you just don't think would be worth money is worth money. Herbie: Yeah, well, you can think about it now, man. You go through all that stuff to get all these movies on VHS. And then after DVDs come out, you're basically redoing your whole collection on DVD. And then the Blu-ray came out, and I was like, all right, Doug, I'm done. As long as we still got DVDs, I'm good. Because everything else is streaming. like we said before, there's a lot of movies out there that if you're going to get a copy of it, You know, it's going to be like maybe like recorded like from a VHS tape, you know, so they have like this squiggly lines and all that stuff. So it's you where you got to go to Columbus. Shamus: They still make DVDs? Like when new movies come out today still? Or is it laser or blu-ray? Herbie: Yeah, definitely. it's just everything streams so much now. There's even movies that stream from the movie theater, right? If you got HBO for action, just like, you know. Shamus: Oh, we had I'll tell you what family moving like there's no excuse for not spending time with your family doing that because it's so much easier than it was but to be honest with you, I kind of appreciate the whole the process it took like my dad picked us up. The pizza was already being made. We go to the store and then it was kind of it wasn't like a time limit, but like, hey, man, we got to go pick this pizza up. And then, know, you get home and then everybody gets their slice of pizza. It's their spot. And then. If your mom beat home, she already had the Jiffy pop like that thing with that big ass tin foil ball. Yeah. Yeah. Like pizza. Then when you're done, you had some popcorn while you're watching your movie. Yeah, man. It wasn't like now. It's just like you just come home with Corey order pizza and we'll just hit play on this shit. And yeah, I kind of appreciated it. Like all three of us, because my dad had like this 1974 Jeep J 10 pickup truck and like our side. And it was like his work trucks. ⁓ Herbie: on the stove. Shamus: our side had like no floorboards to be my brother had to sit over that case. Somebody fell out. My dad. Yeah, it couldn't be my sister. And we're all jammed in there, man. Like sardines It's like, yeah, what move you get? ⁓ Like it was just fun, man. it's something I look back and ⁓ with great fondness. And if my parents still here, I would thank them immensely because it was some of the greatest times of my life. And just go to the video store. Herbie: It was me because you basically, it was, it was like a ritual. You know what mean? Like Friday night, get all your stuff together. Even if you had to hang out with your friends, you're like, no, it's movie night. Sorry. I'll see you guys tomorrow. You know what mean? Now it's like, I think families, like everyone can stream. Everyone's got their own little tablets. They can stream their own shit. Exactly. Shamus: Everybody's got their own TVs in their Laptops, phones. Most of the time, kids are on their phones. Herbie: The only thing that's kind of close to family night, I believe now would be actually like married couples that actually stream and watch a, you know, like a show together, like, you know, like try to binge watch a season, you know, the mom gets a glass of wine and dad's cranking open a couple of white calls or like a shot of JMO and white cloth. I don't know. Me, I made myself, I don't drink white clothes, but you know, that stuff was like a little. Shamus: Yeah. Man, I'm talking the fucking 80s. Herbie: Yeah, Genesee Cream Ale. Shamus: Stuff you put on chrome to clean it up Herbie: Lowenbrough and Schlitz. Shamus: that was drinking white clothes. ⁓ yeah. They would use that for like aftershave. That dude. His hand and be like, All right, let's go to the party. Herbie: What? could basically be a juice. It's it's a seltzer anyway, that would basically be like, you know, and, know, during the little barbecues and stuff, it was it was in the cooler would be like sodas for the kids, man, the white clothes. Now, if that beer didn't come in a big can and kill like maybe take the acid corroded off of like a car battery. Yeah, you're doing something. Shamus: I can say his beer cans and oil cans look at very very the same. Yeah. And bold. And everything. I think that movie over the top where the guy's like, I'm going to go through like Castro and he grabs that thing oil and he's like, God, God. I told him that. Herbie: Yeah, now everything's like... Everything's now in a tall can and stuff. They're like kind of pretty cans. I don't know. It's just different. Shamus: Remember on VHS tape, so you had to sit through the it was almost like being at the movies. Three previews. Yeah. And you were just kind of like either you saw the previews already because you watched the video before or you were just like, oh, yeah. When is that shit? Drop or injury was just like coming soon. Yeah. Herbie: Which is great too, because if you really think about like when they did the previews, it could be like a movie that you're watching from the seventies. You're like, this thing's been out for like, you know, at least 20 years now. Shamus: Yeah, you would see a trailer for a movie you haven't seen or you've already seen three years Herbie: Yeah, trailer for like The Shining. Be like, yeah, I started seeing that. Yeah. It's Ernest goes to camp. Yeah, I saw that already. Shamus: I do remember it kind of lost it's because like you said that was like an error where Like my brother was the oldest of the three and like he wasn't going. But once he started going like school dances. Yeah. And it was just me and my sister. Yeah. And like he would pick a movie. Yeah. but he wasn't there. Yeah. And it just started to lose his luster. And then when I got all enough stuck on the dances, you know, my dad and my sister kept watching horror movies. Yeah. But ⁓ Yeah, that was it was like a error there. Herbie: You know what is shade like with that I think another reason why we always like reminisce about that is because it's just we cherish those times You know with it's just family. You know, it's not like now we're you know, maybe it's almost seems like you know, people get like pissed off like Christmas like ⁓ man I've to do the Christmas dinner. It's gonna be so crazy. But used to love Shamus: Merry man. ⁓ Herbie: Yeah, me too. But you know, it's, it's just gets taxing now for people now to do that stuff. Cause they're seeing others. There's people that do like crazy decorations, know, huge decorations. It's almost like, yeah, it's almost like now, like they'll still celebrate the holiday, but now it's like, they're trying to outshine their neighbors and everything. Cause they're putting all these. Shamus: Well, it's got a hit social media. It's got a you know, yeah or and don't get me wrong. It's it's It's a double-edged sword like when towns like best decorated house because now everybody's trying to beat you Yeah, and it's cutthroat or whatever like like my dad was doing that. Yeah, like we had this huge front deck on Yeah, the front and as soon as it turned Yeah, October 1st. Yeah, the scarecrows went up Come on, boy, we got to go to farm and get two bales of hay. And I'm like, for what? Like, we're not raising cattle. Like the whole front porch was like scarecrows and bales of hay and jack-o-lanterns. it was like he built his own animatronic because he like he worked on cars. He worked on, you know, dragsters and motorcycles and drag bikes He made like his own animatronics And ⁓ so like we the original guys who like made like the monsters like move. And that's cool. So then that would come down and he would put like the leaves out there for he always he loved Thanksgiving the food and stuff. But he was like, I'm not putting it. What am I going to stick a big ass turkey on his deck? So I was like, you sick Rob out there. He's Jive as Turkey. Those you don't know Rob is my brother. Well, you know, but then when Christmas dropped, man, the day after Thanksgiving, Black Friday, everybody hit the store. my dad, it was like that scene from Christmas vacation where he was just like, Hey, Russ, here you go. And like, hand me this big ball of lights and just like small, not there, brother. You see what this happened. Herbie: That is like the worst not to untie man. Shamus: Dude, we had giant candy canes. had sand on the roof. Like you could see our house not from a Clark. Yeah, it was way worse than trying to put like our house. Our house was just to the point where like when I sold it after my dad passed away in 2014, the beginning of 2014, I would still go over and help my mom do it. It wasn't as elaborate as my dad did. Yeah. But like when she passed away, I actually sold that house. Herbie: Christmas balls and everything. Shamus: three days before Christmas. ⁓ And two, three years later, I ran into somebody like somebody from that neighborhood. ⁓ Mrs. Earhart, who I love to death. She was like, sucks driving by that house and at Christmas time now because it's dark. They don't do what you guys did And it kind of it made me feel good, but it kind of broke my heart too, man. So but yeah, the family movie night thing was something. ⁓ Herbie: family tradition. Shamus: Yeah. And I don't know if people still if people are still doing it. Like I always told myself I was never fortunate enough to have my own family have kids. Yeah. And I always told myself, yeah, if I ever have a kid, this is something we have to do. Like it's a no brainer. no cell phone store and dinner. Yeah. Everybody eats together that kind of That's a family movie night. Yeah. amazing. I'm going to try to bring that back. That's why. We started this conversation with the projector outside. Herbie: If really think about it, like our group, actually kind of do stuff like that anyway. Oh, absolutely. But there are a lot of the families out there that are busy, you know, but I think if anyone's listening to this right now, they're like, maybe you guys like, would be a good idea to like, try to reenact or start that again. Like bring your family together. Cause it just seems like this day and age, like everyone's so separate from each other. You know, like kids might be reliable on you. Like, you know, like take them to like soccer practice, taking the baseball practice to watch the game. But at the end of the day, like they go out. playing at the end of day, you kind of, you kind of miss that camaraderie, like they're almost like a, a family team, you know, where everyone says, all right, well, Friday, every Friday night we're doing this or, you know, maybe some families I'm gonna do, oh, we're to do taco Tuesday, whatever. But it was always like a type of thing where you never, yeah, you never, like, it's almost like a traditional thing where everyone knows that clear your schedule for that, that event, cause it's, it's happening. You know what mean? And if you miss it, Shamus: madness. Herbie: It's like a... ⁓ Shamus: Well, some of your favorite snacks while you're watching movies of family movies because like blockbuster was so good at that like when you walked in like West Coast video you got like the free popcorn or you had to jiffy pop it but when you walked in a blockbuster before you even hit the movie, ⁓ you had to walk through like 25 yard square area of just nothing but like ⁓ Movie candy. and stuff like that. So what's some of your favorite stuff used to? ⁓ Herbie: session stand. Shamus: Or leaving it at a movie theater. Herbie: Well, believe it or not, man, like I really don't try to like, especially when I go to a movie theater, like I really want to watch the movie. I try not to get a big soda cause I don't want to like take a piss, like in the middle of it, miss it. And be like, geez, I don't want to do that. You know, or sometimes like, you know, certain foods like that, like if it's traditional, I'll get like popcorn. But I, when I pay attention to a movie, it's like, I just, all my hands are down and I'm just like focused on the movie. I just drink it all in. So I've never been like that eating while I'm watching it type thing. Shamus: I'm like Michael Jackson in the thrill movie. Herbie: Normally like for us with like the movie night we would eat before Before we start the movie because like it was like a big deal like alright We're starting the movie everyone got their seats everyone ready and like you you shut the lights off Shamus: away for that last yes to hit the seat before you hit the play button. Yeah. Now we got to watch three previews, Herbie: the little, you know, the dimmer lights. I got damn it. But then I was actually that was a good time for you to be to get up and take a quick piss real quick. Like I got. You know, and then you watch the movie, you know, and then like after that was I would have a comment like, that was a good one. Yeah. Yeah. I never like if I was doing snacks, it would be like either like Reese's Pieces because I remember back in the day, Reese's Pieces were big for like. I always did it separate. I was just like, you know. Shamus: I'll throw them in with my popcorn. ⁓ I mean, the popcorn can't be hot or it's just going to be a mess. ⁓ so like I would buy like ⁓ the yellow popcorn already popped in the bag and stuff like that and then just kind of mix them. ⁓ Herbie: Yeah, just. Now everyone's got either their own little popcorn makers or you know the act two or whatever bags where you throw in the microwave But back in our time when we were young like that goddamn like, know, the aluminum foil thing pop. Yeah the Jiffy Little handle and everything on there like a metal handle that you put on the snow and wonder why you're Shamus: They still sell that I buy it every once in a while Yeah. Well, it's the same stove and oven that you're throwing them little pieces of plastic, the shrinking dinks that you color. So I mean, you're burning yourself on the Jiffy Pop handle and then you're eating a meatloaf day after you bake plastic in there. Herbie: God, you remember Shrinky Dinks? Yeah, well, you might have a shrinky dink in the meatloaf, you know. ⁓ my God, I forgot about shrinky dinks. And people like, what the hell are you guys talking about? Shamus: We'll get in that. Yeah, we'll get in that different episode Herbie: As one thing like when we're talking about this stuff, we're making a lot of references and some of these people haven't even been alive yet, you know, sucking down. Shamus: think our audience is too young. Herbie: I mean some people like work. We're like a cheese. So they might think we're a food blog or something like there are food podcasts I mean, we got people from Vietnam listening Shamus: people over here and I'm like, this is some bullshit. Yeah. We talked, it's about Porto. Herbie: It's not about the pork roll. Maybe they thought it was pork foe or something like that. I don't know. But you know, we do have some. Shamus: all the countries because every country I sent you at least one person listened for more than like 20 minutes or something. It says really. Yeah. So like I get to see that movie where like people are like listening to it and like each subtitle on the box. It's like a different language. But it's like, what is this shit? Kazakhstan, Paraguay, Iran or Iraq. Iran's preparing for turkeys as they speak. Herbie: Get it, The chupacabras got chupacabras over there. What the hell is a Creek angel? Everyone's told like, what the hell is a Creek angel? We'll get to that. Don't worry. They exist. They're real. Shamus: But yeah. What was your favorite? See, I was going to kind of put it in a way like, you rather like you can go to Blockbuster West Coast, but then they also had the stores in the mall like Sam Goody had like a section FYE or whatever. ⁓ To be honest with you, it didn't matter to me. ⁓ I love Cruz and the bargain bins on all them stores. Blockbuster was great. Yeah, Walmart. Herbie: It's a huge like, you know, $5 bargain bin thing. Shamus: You'd have that big ass steel crate in the middle of the aisle and you'd just go digging. Herbie: ⁓ yeah. Everybody did that. was like people had to take their time. like every once in a while, maybe you had two other people in there digging and then they'd have like their own little separate pile, like you're all burying bones or something. Shamus: And their DVDs really kind of changed the game because you grab a DVD and you'd be like the shawl Claude Van Damme three pack and he was like, yeah, you know, blood sport and what double whatever they do. Yeah. It's all in back in some other shitty movie. You're like, oh, God. I love that movie. But oh, my God. All three for a buck. Ninety nine. So yeah. Herbie: in fact. Yeah, there's plenty even like I used to go like a ⁓ Bargain binging that Columbus farmers market because you know there's yeah Yeah, some dudes with tables with like some old ass DVDs, and I'm just schooled a bunch of them in Shamus: Yeah, man, those are. Herbie: ⁓ When you watch all these movies, you have your favorite ones, man. And that's why was huge when you got into the video store, you'd actually scramble to go to get your movie, because you're like, if I don't get my movie, this movie night's going to suck. But when I started doing it, TNS Video was my first one, and we were there for years in Lumberton. And then, ⁓ the other one not blockbuster because blockbuster came out later blockbuster kind of blew everyone else out the mom and yeah West Coast video was actually the original one that tried to be like corporate type thing where like you know like everyone you have like that corner store that had a video that was video that was a video store we even have like ⁓ in my town we had like a little ⁓ Shamus: Totally knocked out what's good video Herbie: It's like a little convenience store. get your hoagies and stuff like that. And they had a couple of racks of movies rented, you know, rented crap there too. Zombie. Shamus: 7-elevens had that. Yeah, I was shocked. Yeah, I was like man. I want these movies Herbie: It's like one stop shop man, that's what everyone did back in the day. Now it's like you just have to stream everything, which is unfortunate that some people like if power goes out or something or you lose the files, you don't get to see them anymore. Same thing with video games. Shamus: Well that and I don't understand how certain DVDs you buy you get the bonus footage. Like the interviews of like the main actor in the movie talking about or the director or like you would even get the... You could play the movie with the directors. What the hell do they call that? Yeah. Commentary or like the main actor's commentary. Yeah. You kind of lose that with streaming. I know some things I bought on Apple. Yeah. They're like, oh, comes with bonus. And I'm like, I don't even know how to fucking get to that. I don't even know. Yeah. I don't know how to play that. Like I don't. Where the hell is it listed at? But like with the DVDs, like I thought the DVD thing was cool because you could. And then you could just skip right to it. Like VHS, you had to kind of rewind and fast forward to where you want to be. Herbie: Terry. Shamus: DVDs, can just like chapter three. Herbie: Yeah, just me for me. I gotta be honest like around that time I think movies were just it was more efficient because now when you're watching TV when you're clicking the channel, you have that Delay. Yes. I just don't like it and you're like, know, sit there you press it and then you're loading it and then it's like a history channel and like if you don't have a subscription to that one and just gives you like a thing if you like to make it subs like no, just watch frickin TV Shamus: that and if like your DVD gets stuck and like the picture just like you just popped it out. You wiped it on. Oh, You did a little breathing on there. You wiped it on your shirt or you got your little microfiber towel. Yeah. Put it in and you were good. When streaming does that, you get that little round circle thing. And then you turn the shit off and then you go back to it. Yeah. Not in the same guy. Just like mother. Herbie: Like, Loading. Loading. ⁓ Get her. Yeah, it's not as great. mean, even if you think, excuse me, you think about it too. The TVs, TVs are really, you know, replaceable. They're like, I mean, they're huge, but they're like little greens. Yeah. Shamus: throw away back in our day he called the repairman Herbie: right or the thing never broke down it would be like 30 years old. Shamus: Man, well that was a party here for Like that that entertainment center I got like that little thing that was the size of our family Herbie: Yeah, actually, yeah, because a lot of them... Yeah, that like wood grain cabinets and everything. Shamus: I was hell on the floor. Well, I'm up on the wall. Like everybody just kind of like there was you'd have to move the coffee table. Yeah, because you couldn't put your feet up because you couldn't see the goddamn TV. Yeah, like everybody like in all those TV shows or movies you see, like the people from the 50s, like all leaned into the TV. Like that's real. Yeah, like that is no bullshit. Herbie: Yeah, and I'm sure like our age when we were kids like and doing the rough housing and stuff like that I'm sure a couple of us got bounced off that goddamn furniture with the wood grain cabinet Shamus: ⁓ no doubt. You remember this back up away from the goddamn TV. You're to burn your eyes out. My brother on site like Joe with the wrestling thing. Yeah, sorry. Come down the steps. ⁓ yeah. Then we just got cereal. We got our bowls of cereal. We sat down Indian style like two inches from the TV screen to watch like the Smurfs or the snorks or whatever. And then wrestling. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Sitting there. My under is burning my eyes. Damn right. Herbie: And it was awesome. mean, they still believe even if you think about it, like there's people that talk about like, oh, I wish they brought back Saturday morning cartoons because they they don't really have anymore. You know, you can't really get like, you know, I'm Shamus: Which is far I'm so far removed from that because I like I said, I never had kids or anything like that. Like everybody watches Nickelodeon or rest in peace to Cartoon Network. I used to love watching that. Yeah. But yeah, like you said, like what was it like Fox or Channel 29? Like where I live in Philly was twenty nine, three, six, ten, seventeen. Like they all had Saturday morning cartoons. Oh, yeah. Herbie: And you knew it. You had your schedule. Like, all right, I'm going to go to channel two for a little bit, then switch over to seven. Because after that, then, you know, got to go to 10 because Spiderman's on. Yeah. And like this was like back in day where like, you know, you couldn't just get it on demand if you missed a goddamn episode. That was all. Oh, It was like, oh, I'll stream it and watch it later. Like, nope. Shamus: Yep. Yep. ⁓ Herbie: your attendance and, and, and being on time, that's, think that's another thing where everything like comes in where like people are like on time and punctual and all that stuff. Because if you wanted to watch transformers and see Optimus prime, make it, you know, you had to make sure you Shamus: You not only had to be on time you had to be there early if you wanted to something to eat drink Yeah, you gotta have all your shit together. then you walked in the room sat down and you're like, all right now Herbie: starts another reason why i wouldn't use any snacks or anything is i was like i'm glued to the tv Shamus: Like our last episode, we talked about, well, me and you, our last episode, ⁓ when we talked about hot teachers, the nun part of it, like going to Catholic school. Man, we would go to Sunday church at 11 o'clock. this is kind of when I was a little bit older. ⁓ I knew that the Randall Cunningham show, or the Buddy Ryan show started at 12 and the Randall Cunningham show was 1230. And then it became rich, whatever the coach was time. Which is, but anyway, and I remember walking in the church and we'd like do a little gender flexible. And then they're like, you hear the music and you know that the priest is coming down the aisle and you're just like, please be father Larry, please be father Larry. His father Larry was my father used to call him and He uh, He used to call father Larry father grab a buck because he had a gambling problem Oh, yeah, but he was a huge Eagles fan. So he's in there and if father Larry walked by you're like fuck right, dude We're out here by 1145. He's got to watch the show Herbie: ⁓ yeah, he's probably like, Jesus is cool. Alright. Shamus: If Father Julius came in there, who is this German dude who nobody understood? And listen, they were both great guys. But man, that guy just take forever. You just put your head down and you're just like you look up to the ceiling. like, why has thou for safety? Because we're going to be here until 1230. Like, we're not even going to catch the interview Randall does today. Herbie: drawn in. Yeah ⁓ yeah, and like I said, if you miss it. Shamus: That's it. mean, were times my mom was just like, because she's a rabbit eagles fan. He'd be get close to one o'clock. He'd be getting close to kickoff. Like we're almost in church for two hours. And my mom's just like, We about to bail. ⁓ How much ⁓ if we're south when it's all over, sister, we'll go together. ⁓ Yeah, but get up out of here. ⁓ Yeah. But Father Larry walked in. You were going to make the buddy Ryan show. ⁓ If Father walked in, man, you might make kickoff ⁓ an hour Herbie: Maybe Shamus: You're like, man. Herbie: Well now like you don't have to really worry about that stuff. Well shoot now you don't even have to worry about going to the movie theater anymore. Like people can have like an inflatable screen and you know projector. Now with this type of weather like a lot of people do that now. There's a movie theater in the backyard because you know movie theaters used to be a huge thing back then. Shamus: Now you just DVR-ed. Yeah. ⁓ Yeah, that's what I'm doing this year. Yeah. Well, that's another thing that's changed over the years. Like, I remember being a kid, my dad had like the eight millimeter. That was the thing in our neighborhood. He the eight millimeter, like the real, the real eight millimeter. Oh, really? Like Godzilla, King Kong and stuff. And he would set it up in front because the row home that I lived in, like right next door, there was a two car garage. And that's where his is his business was East Coast Auto Body and racing. He would work. mean, he literally walked out the front door and just walk from me to you. And he was at work. Yeah. But in the summertime, he would close the garage, the one garage door, put a sheet up, whatever, and eight millimeter projector thing. And we watch. ⁓ But just that technology, like when we got to VCR, like he tried to get a projector, but projector sucked back in like it to be so dark and shit. Drive in movie theaters where actually it would start like kind of dusk. Herbie: That's cool. Shamus: And like the first 15, 20 minutes movie, you're squinting the look and you had that big, but you had a big speaker hanging on your hanging on your and you're like all trying to listen to that. But then when it got dark, it was good. Projectors. Now, the one I just bought, dude, it could be sunny as hell out. And that thing is just bad. Yeah. And you just hook them to like a Bluetooth speaker. And there is a drive through movie that does that, where you just you hook it to your like you just. Herbie: And they're ⁓ Shamus: Tune in with your phone. if you have a radio in your car and it picks up Bluetooth, you can just, you drive in and then you just hook into your freaking, like your Bluetooth and it's amazing. Herbie: All the people listening like, I remember the word drive-thru was never really in at one. I remember what was like the first movie you went to go see in the drive-thru. Shamus: It was a double feature. was Project X with ⁓ Matthew Broderick about the monkeys that were flying the planes like the test pilots and then Predator with really Arnold Schwarzenegger. Yeah, we saw it up at the Poconos. Herbie: There were always like, goddamn double features at the drive because that was. Shamus: And that was another cool thing because my dad had that pickup truck. We used to use that to tow the camper. And my mom would follow us in the car. And when we got to the site, like the truck was just there for the camper part of it. But like he would unhooked and like we would take that and then we all sat up on the on the roof of it Watch the movie. ⁓ Herbie: I say that stuff's great. mean, people could do that now for like camping, but you know, drive-throughs are just. Shamus: I think there's only one left in Jersey, but it's like state of the art. It's like. Herbie: used to be like, you know, there was a bunch of them in Jersey. Shamus: I don't know why somebody doesn't do it. I don't even know what to. Herbie: ⁓ I mean, sounds like a good idea, but the way people are anymore, man, it's, it's almost like you don't want a big group of random people hanging out with each other. Cause something's going to happen. Yeah. That just seems like more common now that just people just like, if you get a bunch of people together, it's like, Shamus: That wouldn't bother me as much as I would be the guy who would own it and I would expect a trunkload of kid, you know, that's kind of cool like society kind of misses that part of it like the Like we're trying to be bad, but it's not hurting anybody think like, you know sneaking into a movie theater somebody who's like Hey, it's five hours a person and you got ten dudes in the trunk and there's only two guys in the front now that kind of deal ⁓ yeah, you're always worried about the other ship but Herbie: especially now adults and it's just like, don't know, man, people, people got a lot more growing to do. But, ⁓ I think the first movie I saw in the drive-through was, ⁓ motel hell. I had another movie. I forget. I still, I still love like horror movies and you know, action, ninja movies and Godzilla movies. I don't think if you knew him, like my buddy Shingo that lives in Japan, he lives right down the street from Toho studios. Shamus: And you were telling me the god's yeah, did you see they're doing G minus zero? How is that? Do they have anything to do with that? Because apparently that guy is and I don't want to sound racist or anything. I know the director is Asian. Yeah. So is that being done at that studio or? Herbie: Yeah, the second one, man. It's I believe so. Yeah, because to yeah, toes. Shamus: Wild cuz I'm not a big guy but he was walking past the Statue of Liberty. I was like, yeah, that's a big boy Herbie: event. Matter of this is actually showing you how old I am. Like when I lived in the Bronx, ⁓ there was the, the Shogun warriors were these big, huge dolls. So they had the robots and they had Godzilla and I had the Godzilla one cause Godzilla was my man, I would carry him around like, like a security blanket. He was like almost half my size. So you got like this little kid in the broad. Yeah. It was like on the subway carrying around this big ass Godzilla. And it was like almost the size of me. was, I took that thing wherever I went movie theaters. had wheels underneath his feet so you can just roll them across like the yeah Yeah, and he had the his hand shot off and he had ⁓ Shamus: I was gonna say you have the wheels. Do have the spark thing that came out of his mouth too? Herbie: I think they tried doing something like that at first, but basically it was it was just like a little lever on the back and like this the plastic tongue would be like painted like a like a. That's cool, though. Yeah, he was dope. I think it was like, you know, this is size of me. Shamus: Okay, I thought too. Yeah man, this brings back a lot of good memories. Herbie: Yeah. Like you just, like, just the fact of like movies, watching movies together as a family that that's like, like you said before, dude, it's, it's awesome. So people that are listening, start doing that, you know, don't still like put on a movie for your little kids and keep them quiet and babysit them. they, know, while you go off and do your thing. Shamus: And real quick, before we wrap this up, I always, I just, I just remembered this. Not only did we get together on Fridays, but usually at the end of the weekend when it was winding down and you know, dinner was done and everybody was getting a shower or a bath, getting ready to go to bed. That's when the Simpsons started. So we would watch, everybody would sit down and watch America's most wanted cops the Simpsons or married with children and then the Simpsons. And then it was time to go. So we were actually like a small little like thing on Sundays we do too, man, ⁓ Herbie: Because like I said, you had to watch certain shows like for me when I was a kid like, um, what was it? The Muppet Show. This is a, you know, dating. am too. Yeah. So like after the Muppet Show was on, it was like, all right, it's time to go to bed. You got school tomorrow. Or it was like, you know, after threes company when I got a little bit older, because you know, when you're a kid, you're trying to push your, uh, your bedtime a little, little, little farther and then trying to rationalize like I'm nine now. So maybe I can stay up till nine, you know? But, uh, yeah, just all those old shows and that's just. Brings back a lot of memories, it's awesome, Shamus: If you're still listening, make sure you like, subscribe, give us a rating, whether it's good or bad. And if you have any memories or any, if you remember your first family movie night or the first VCR tape or DVD or what was the glue? What was that big laser disk they were doing or beta? Beta was a big thing. Herbie: Yeah, they have that too man, but other people like what the hell are you talking about? Shamus: Lot of people were pissed off the baited in like they paid all that money for a bait machine and then the laser disc was the same thing. So, ⁓ but yeah, if you have a memory or something like that, drop us in line. Yeah. Herbie: Drop a comment, let us know what you think, Shamus: if you have any movie recommendations, so yeah, ⁓ can sit down and watch at my house. Let me know and if you have any ⁓ for Like a topic for a show. Let us know. Yeah, ⁓ heard One last thing before we go. What's that? Remember to control the pet population get your dogs and cats spayed or neutered ⁓ catch you guys on the next one. Say good night, Herbie. Good night Herbie: everybody.
