- 0:10Speaker 1: This could be a twenty twenty some day because there
- 0:12Speaker 1: were just so many unanswered questions.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Stay on the poty.
- 0:26Speaker 3: Heidi's not responsive, Nick's been injured.
- 0:29Speaker 2: You're like, what what do you hear from neighbors? Were
- 0:32Speaker 2: they able to see anything?
- 0:33Speaker 4: Hear anything?
- 0:34Speaker 2: They who are like a picture perfect couple?
- 0:40Speaker 5: Who would do this to this young couple?
- 0:43Speaker 1: His story of an intruder coming into the house was
- 0:47Speaker 1: the only story that made sense.
- 0:49Speaker 4: You had heard never mentioned this either set of parents,
- 0:53Speaker 4: none of our parents, or none of our friends. No
- 0:55Speaker 4: one knows about this except you.
- 0:59Speaker 2: Wouldn't he tell you about this intruder.
- 1:01Speaker 4: But he's really big brothers six one six. That's when
- 1:05Speaker 4: we were given the sketch of this alleged intruder. She said,
- 1:09Speaker 4: I know who's in that sketch.
- 1:10Speaker 6: We had maybe found our guide.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Were you ever concerned that you sleeping with a killer?
- 1:26Speaker 2: This is a story about a young married couple just
- 1:29Speaker 2: starting out. They'd recently bought their first home, and they
- 1:32Speaker 2: had a lot of promise.
- 1:34Speaker 5: Ahead of them.
- 1:35Speaker 7: Nick and Heidi Furkus were in their twenties, very active
- 1:38Speaker 7: in their church, very family oriented. What kind of couple
- 1:43Speaker 7: that you hope all couples would be in their early twenties.
- 1:47Speaker 4: Heidi and Nick lived in the Midway neighborhood of Saint Paul.
- 1:50Speaker 2: It was a very quiet, very family friendly part of
- 1:54Speaker 2: our city.
- 1:55Speaker 6: This is just a fantastic, tight knit community. Heidi and
- 1:58Speaker 6: Nick were a part of that.
- 2:01Speaker 8: In Minnesota, it takes a number of summers to get
- 2:03Speaker 8: to know your neighbors because we are pulled up for
- 2:06Speaker 8: most of the winter. Good quiet neighbors would occasionally speak
- 2:11Speaker 8: to Nick, you know, when they're running in and out
- 2:14Speaker 8: of their homes.
- 2:15Speaker 2: It was a Sunday morning that should have been like
- 2:18Speaker 2: any other, with Heidi and Nick getting ready to join
- 2:20Speaker 2: their friends and family at church. But this Sunday would
- 2:24Speaker 2: change the couple's lives forever.
- 2:29Speaker 1: April twenty fifth, twenty ten, starts off as a quiet
- 2:33Speaker 1: Sunday morning in the Hamlin Midway neighborhood. Sun is shining.
- 2:40Speaker 3: I was patrol supervisor for the Same Paul Police Department.
- 2:44Speaker 3: It was like six point thirty in the morning, but
- 2:46Speaker 3: it had been a fairly quiet night. We were all
- 2:50Speaker 3: just getting ready to go home for the day.
- 2:54Speaker 4: Stay patrol nine one one.
- 2:57Speaker 7: In my home.
- 2:58Speaker 6: The nine one one call is from Highcus. She's calm,
- 3:01Speaker 6: but you can tell that she's scared. What city are
- 3:04Speaker 6: you in? St?
- 3:05Speaker 5: Pap What address are you at?
- 3:10Speaker 1: Ha ha e mini ha on someone's science.
- 3:18Speaker 6: The call ends very abruptly with a loud noise, and
- 3:21Speaker 6: what that noise is exactly, we didn't know on the
- 3:23Speaker 6: front end.
- 3:25Speaker 9: Several of us safstters took the call and began our response.
- 3:30Speaker 9: I activated my emergency lights. Certainly gets your blood going.
- 3:37Speaker 6: Shortly after the first nine one one call has abruptly ended,
- 3:41Speaker 6: another nine one one call comes in.
- 3:45Speaker 8: Patrol one.
- 3:46Speaker 6: This time it's from Nick Furcus, and Nick is screaming
- 3:50Speaker 6: into the phone.
- 3:57Speaker 7: Okay, an apartment, what's the what's the problems?
- 4:04Speaker 3: Were shot? You've been shot?
- 4:10Speaker 7: Stay on the far with me.
- 4:12Speaker 5: Okay, because you can hear the panic in his voice.
- 4:16Speaker 5: He's hysterical, he's crying, he's screaming you stay on.
- 4:26Speaker 6: The far with me.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Who shot you?
- 4:35Speaker 4: My real guy about there right now? Go ahead, Well
- 4:38Speaker 4: you said your wife and shot off that.
- 4:46Speaker 5: The bras.
- 4:47Speaker 9: I've got a lot of outcoming. Myself and three other
- 4:51Speaker 9: officers rived on scene within five to ten seconds of
- 4:55Speaker 9: each other. We know that we have potential unshot victims.
- 5:03Speaker 1: They find the outside screen door open and the front
- 5:07Speaker 1: door propped open just a little bit.
- 5:10Speaker 9: We don't know if the suspect or suspects are still
- 5:14Speaker 9: at the address, so we do have our firearms out.
- 5:18Speaker 9: There's an officer just to my left that kicks the door.
- 5:23Speaker 7: They enter the house tactically because they don't know if
- 5:26Speaker 7: they're still an intruder in the house.
- 5:27Speaker 5: Nick is on the nine to one one call and
- 5:29Speaker 5: you can hear the police arriving to render aid.
- 5:41Speaker 9: There was a very distinct smell of recently a fired gunshot.
- 5:46Speaker 9: We observe a female down in the kitchen area, and
- 5:54Speaker 9: then we see a male.
- 5:59Speaker 3: The off at that point quickly walked through the house
- 6:02Speaker 3: to make sure that there isn't another potential suspect inside.
- 6:07Speaker 3: They see Nick and Heidi in the kitchen and Heidi's
- 6:13Speaker 3: not responsive. Nick's been in jerny.
- 6:16Speaker 5: Nick tells the police that the intruder broke in and
- 6:19Speaker 5: the two of them wrestled over Nick's shotgun. It was
- 6:23Speaker 5: absolutely terrifying, and then the shotgun went off and Heidi
- 6:28Speaker 5: got shot in the back.
- 6:31Speaker 6: During this struggle with the intruder, Nick had been shot
- 6:33Speaker 6: one time from a double barrel shotgun. He was screaming
- 6:38Speaker 6: and he was upset and he needed an ambulance immediately.
- 6:41Speaker 3: Heidi had been shot in her upper back. She had
- 6:44Speaker 3: lost a significant amount of blood. She had no signs
- 6:48Speaker 3: of life.
- 6:49Speaker 9: They pronounced Heidi Fergus deceased at the scene.
- 6:55Speaker 4: Nick was transported by Saint Paul fire paramedics fairly quickly
- 6:59Speaker 4: down the Reach Hospital, which is one of the Level
- 7:02Speaker 4: one Trump centers in Saint Paul.
- 7:04Speaker 2: What was the crime scene, like, what did you discover
- 7:06Speaker 2: in the house.
- 7:07Speaker 4: There was a pair of jeans laying in the foyer area,
- 7:10Speaker 4: and then the shotgun was laying there on the ground
- 7:12Speaker 4: as well, right inside the doorway.
- 7:16Speaker 5: The shotgun belongs to Nick. It's his hunting gun. It's
- 7:19Speaker 5: a double barrel and he kept it in the closet
- 7:21Speaker 5: of his bedroom for safety.
- 7:25Speaker 4: We also saw the pellets that were in the doorframe
- 7:28Speaker 4: as well as the door itself from when Nick was
- 7:31Speaker 4: shot by the intruder.
- 7:33Speaker 5: Officers also photographed would look like tool marks on the
- 7:38Speaker 5: front door along the frame, as if someone were trying
- 7:41Speaker 5: to jimmy it open.
- 7:45Speaker 6: When a call comes in of somebody that's been shot
- 7:48Speaker 6: at six in the morning in April spring morning, we
- 7:52Speaker 6: have a massive police response.
- 7:54Speaker 3: A canine officer responded to see if you could track
- 7:58Speaker 3: the suspect from the front door.
- 8:00Speaker 6: Officers and investigators began canvassing the whole area to talk
- 8:04Speaker 6: to anybody we can. We began looking for cameras on
- 8:08Speaker 6: houses or people out walking their dogs. We're looking for
- 8:11Speaker 6: any sign of anything of someone running away.
- 8:15Speaker 5: Who would do this to this young couple.
- 8:17Speaker 4: Maybe they had an interaction with the intruder, maybe met
- 8:20Speaker 4: them the day before.
- 8:22Speaker 5: The one person that police need to talk to is
- 8:25Speaker 5: the lone survivor the one witness, Nick Fergus.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Other than they started hearing feeling with our doing not
- 8:33Speaker 2: there was an intruder trying to burglarize the home.
- 8:35Speaker 4: That's when the struggle took place between Nick and an
- 8:38Speaker 4: intruder trying to shut the doors shut, but he.
- 8:42Speaker 8: Gets forced again.
- 8:43Speaker 6: Nick told us that he began having a fight for
- 8:46Speaker 6: his life.
- 8:46Speaker 5: We went off.
- 8:47Speaker 6: We were all looking for that intruder.
