- 0:00Speaker 1: The following program is produced by the tech Talk Radio Network. Hi.
- 0:03Speaker 1: I'm Rick Darringer, Rock and Roll hoo Chiku, and you're
- 0:06Speaker 1: listening tech talk Radio. Welcome to another episode of tech
- 0:12Speaker 1: Talk Radio. I'm Andy Taylor, I'm Sean de Weird, and
- 0:16Speaker 1: I'm justin let me whoa, We're back. Everybody back. Oh
- 0:20Speaker 1: my goodness, we're all back and safe. Sean almost did
- 0:25Speaker 1: not make it back safe.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I swear, Andy, every time you decide to pick
- 0:30Speaker 2: a day that we're going to record a show, I'm
- 0:31Speaker 2: under some sort of threat of severe weather. That's why
- 0:38Speaker 2: global warming. Because Tornado Alley is shifting north and north
- 0:42Speaker 2: and east right over my house.
- 0:44Speaker 1: I got a I got a place across the street
- 0:46Speaker 1: here in Denver. You can move to there you go.
- 0:48Speaker 1: We don't get that kind of stuff here. It'd be
- 0:50Speaker 1: a heck of a commute to get back to Notre Dame.
- 0:52Speaker 1: But yeah, you know, well you fly on private jets now, apparently, Yeah,
- 0:57Speaker 1: what's this story?
- 0:58Speaker 2: I was like, hey, wait, so we're doing our big
- 1:01Speaker 2: upgrade Dick Summer and vendors are catering, they're flying us there.
- 1:06Speaker 2: You know, we're visiting vendor sites and visiting places that
- 1:08Speaker 2: have equipment that we're looking at. So vendors are whining
- 1:12Speaker 2: and dining us at this point, so it's kind of nice.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Wow, you flew on a lear Jet. Have you ever
- 1:19Speaker 1: been in one of those before? No, I threw I
- 1:21Speaker 1: flew on a citation Assessa citation today. I thought it
- 1:25Speaker 1: was a lear Jet. Yeah. The last time, the last time,
- 1:28Speaker 1: excuse me, mister high flyer.
- 1:31Speaker 2: The last time we went up to this vendor, which
- 1:33Speaker 2: was a year and a half ago, I think we
- 1:35Speaker 2: flew on their their king Air twin turbo prop.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Which was here's a pretty awesome plane. Yeah. I think
- 1:41Speaker 1: you say lear Jet and you compare it to Cessna.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Sessna made some really good jets and some good aircraft.
- 1:49Speaker 1: I mean, oh yeah. The first plane I ever flew
- 1:52Speaker 1: was and there there's a great plane. Question is Sean.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Did you have to go through TSA, No, just customs? Yep,
- 2:02Speaker 1: right yep, because you got a private terminal, right yep.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Oh I literally pulled right up, walked in. Fifteen to
- 2:09Speaker 2: twenty minutes later we're on the plane. It's a doodle one.
- 2:12Speaker 1: That is that is awesome. But no, getting back to
- 2:14Speaker 1: the whole weather thing, yeah, I was I was concerned
- 2:17Speaker 1: and justin you know, we had sent a group chat
- 2:20Speaker 1: to everybody and we were talking about it, and you
- 2:23Speaker 1: had mentioned take a look and see at this weather thing.
- 2:27Speaker 1: I looked at I was like, oh, I don't think
- 2:29Speaker 1: Shun's going to be doing the show tonight. Yeah.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Yeah, So all the storms rolled through about three or
- 2:34Speaker 2: four o'clock this afternoon. We didn't get back until almost
- 2:38Speaker 2: almost seven.
- 2:39Speaker 1: I was watching that thing until like from like eight am. Chicago.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Chicago got hit hard.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Yeah, so Chicago got hit pretty hard. And then Lake County,
- 2:51Speaker 2: which is the last county before you get into Illinois,
- 2:53Speaker 2: which is where Gary, Indiana is, got hit the hardest. Right,
- 2:57Speaker 2: ninety five percent of the residents in Lake County are
- 3:01Speaker 2: without power.
- 3:03Speaker 1: That's like, that's that's like one.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Hundred and twenty thousand homes.
- 3:06Speaker 1: The only five percent left is what data centers. That's
- 3:14Speaker 1: funny how I have.
- 3:16Speaker 2: No idea, right, but they got hit with what's called
- 3:19Speaker 2: a direcco, which is sustained thunderstorms with straight line winds
- 3:24Speaker 2: averaging so many miles an hour, but they're peak recorded
- 3:28Speaker 2: via the National Weather Service was ninety nine miles an hour.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Oh man, So that's pretty bad. That's almost that's like
- 3:35Speaker 2: almost EF one tornado level if you if you right winds,
- 3:40Speaker 2: but constant and over an extended period of time. So
- 3:44Speaker 2: peak was ninety nine, but it had to average. You'd
- 3:46Speaker 2: have to look up look it up. But if you
- 3:48Speaker 2: look up Lake County, Indiana, Gary. But then it traveled
- 3:52Speaker 2: over to Laporte County, which is one county to the
- 3:55Speaker 2: west of US, it produced a couple of small tornadoes
- 3:58Speaker 2: and then which triggered a tornado warning. So you would
- 4:02Speaker 2: think that because we were in Canada, I was in Toronto,
- 4:05Speaker 2: near Toronto, we would be not getting weather alerts, but
- 4:08Speaker 2: because all of us were members of the university, we
- 4:11Speaker 2: got the nd alert. Say, there was the Tranada warning.
- 4:15Speaker 2: So all of our phones started going crazy during the
- 4:18Speaker 2: vendor meeting and really they're like what's happening. We're like, oh,
- 4:20Speaker 2: it's just a tornado warning. They're like what, oh.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Yeah, back back home, back home. Yeah.
- 4:26Speaker 2: And then then the then the guy, our sales guy,
- 4:29Speaker 2: was talking to the pilot who was saying like they
- 4:31Speaker 2: might they were trying to shift whether or not we
- 4:33Speaker 2: had to shift our flight to our flight around because
- 4:35Speaker 2: trying to avoid the weather.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Wow.
- 4:37Speaker 2: But it went south instead of north, which was good
- 4:39Speaker 2: because then we had a quit clean air flying back.
- 4:43Speaker 1: One question though, you mentioned that you were in Canada.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Did you get poutine while you were there? What the
- 4:52Speaker 1: heck is poutine? Oh?
- 4:54Speaker 2: My god?
- 4:55Speaker 1: Poutine is well, what is poutine? It is like the
- 4:59Speaker 1: food in the world.
- 5:00Speaker 2: It's a very it's a very Canadian thing. It's basically
- 5:03Speaker 2: fries and gravy.
- 5:04Speaker 1: And cheese, geese. Really, yeah, God, brown gravy, French fries
- 5:10Speaker 1: and cheese. Curses like is God's gift to food?
- 5:15Speaker 2: Sometimes sometimes you can someve some substitute mash potatoes instead
- 5:18Speaker 2: of French fries.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Where do they have restaurants that serve up this poutine?
- 5:22Speaker 1: You talk about every Canadian restaurant in the world. Really
- 5:26Speaker 1: in Canada, I mean never had it? Did you get it?
- 5:29Speaker 2: Shown? No?
- 5:30Speaker 1: No, Oh my god, you gotta have You go to Canada,
- 5:37Speaker 1: you have to have poutine.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Everybody is listening that wonders how why we're talking about
- 5:42Speaker 2: different food from different places. Right, all three of us
- 5:44Speaker 2: live in different different demographics of the US, Right, I
- 5:47Speaker 2: live in I live in north central Indiana, so there's
- 5:52Speaker 2: nothing here. Justin lives in Denver, where everything has whed
- 5:56Speaker 2: in it.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Oh, come on and.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Where everything tastes drier than a biscuit.
- 6:07Speaker 1: The entire listener base of this show. You need to
- 6:10Speaker 1: come out, Sean, and we'll give you a Sonoran hot dog.
- 6:13Speaker 1: You'll change your mind. Wait, just for our listeners that
- 6:21Speaker 1: here he is talking about weather. Where is this website
- 6:24Speaker 1: you guys go to to get like this because they
- 6:27Speaker 1: have it available everywhere, even here in Arizona. Right.
- 6:30Speaker 2: I look at I look for Weatherwise, which is Ryan
- 6:34Speaker 2: Hall is a YouTuber. He kind of pushed this Weatherwise app.
- 6:37Speaker 2: He got sponsored by them. It's turned into this pretty
- 6:39Speaker 2: good platform. And Justin has another one. I'm not doing
- 6:42Speaker 2: what he had.
- 6:42Speaker 1: But yeah, well, actually I use a couple of different ones.
- 6:46Speaker 1: If I'm looking at on my own, I use Zoom
- 6:49Speaker 1: dot Earth. Zoom Zoom dot Earth is amazing. It's not
- 6:54Speaker 1: sponsored by any of these big storm casters. Here's the
- 6:57Speaker 1: thing Sean mentioned Ryan Hall. I like Ryan Hall, but
- 7:02Speaker 1: he is an entertainer. He's not a meteorologist, correct, he is.
- 7:07Speaker 1: He is an amateur weather enthusiast. So if I want
- 7:12Speaker 1: to know what's exactly going on, I'm watching max Velocity
- 7:16Speaker 1: on YouTube. Max Velocity is a degreed meteorologist, and he
- 7:21Speaker 1: uses a couple different ones, one of them zoom dot earth,
- 7:25Speaker 1: but not so much because he has tools that are
- 7:29Speaker 1: way more stronger than zoom dot earth. But I like
- 7:32Speaker 1: zoom dot earth because it has a mobile app, it
- 7:35Speaker 1: has a desktop app. I think it's like twelve bucks
- 7:38Speaker 1: a year, and you get some amazing quality, uh imagery
- 7:43Speaker 1: on satellite imagery, radar imagery, forecasting not so much. If
- 7:48Speaker 1: you want to know what's going on right now, I
- 7:50Speaker 1: would say zoom dot earth is my favorite. Can they
- 7:52Speaker 1: also do that by location? So like somebody here in
- 7:55Speaker 1: Selwodeita Green Valley could look that up? And absolutely, it's
- 7:59Speaker 1: like Google.
- 7:59Speaker 2: I'm at right now. It's like Google Earth. You just
- 8:01Speaker 2: scroll around and I can look at it. I scrolled
- 8:03Speaker 2: back to two o'clock today and looked at what the
- 8:06Speaker 2: weather was today.
- 8:07Speaker 1: It's frustrating because honestly, you know, we have three sources
- 8:12Speaker 1: that I know of. You've got Underground, which is you know,
- 8:16Speaker 1: Weather Underground. I would not recommend Underground. There Acuweather, which
- 8:22Speaker 1: is is pretty good. There's weather dot Com, but then
- 8:27Speaker 1: really it's all weather dot gov. I mean, whether it
- 8:30Speaker 1: is where I get my stuff from. So I'm glad
- 8:32Speaker 1: you mentioned whether dot gov because honestly, all these websites
- 8:36Speaker 1: are getting their data from weather dot gov. Now I
- 8:39Speaker 1: use weather dot gov as well, because it is raw data.
- 8:44Speaker 1: All you're getting when you go to weather dot com
- 8:47Speaker 1: or you go to acuweather or what was the other
- 8:50Speaker 1: one you mentioned underground, you're just getting that same data
- 8:54Speaker 1: overlaid with advertisements. Yeah, there's a lot of ads. That's it. Yeah,
- 8:58Speaker 1: go to weather dot gov if you want straight up weather,
- 9:01Speaker 1: weather dot gov, and then you want this guy. He's
- 9:04Speaker 1: he's got to be getting it from weather dot gov.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Now he's using whether dot god, but he's got tools
- 9:08Speaker 1: that overlay certain things like tornado warnings, tornado pass I
- 9:12Speaker 1: think it's radar Omega. Radar Omega I found from Ryan
- 9:16Speaker 1: Hall that Sean mentioned. Radar Omega is also really, really
- 9:20Speaker 1: really good, So I would say zoom dot Earth or
- 9:24Speaker 1: radar Omega. All right, Sean, One of the things I
- 9:27Speaker 1: know you also did during our our break here is
- 9:30Speaker 1: you did gen Con. Right, that's the big gaming conference.
- 9:34Speaker 1: How was that this year compared to like last year?
- 9:36Speaker 2: Unsurprisingly, we survived a tornado warning.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Oh you're kidding me. This is starting to become a
- 9:44Speaker 1: thing with you. It surroundsed this show and places I go.
- 9:47Speaker 1: So wherever I go, I'm just a whirlwind. Okay, yeah,
- 9:52Speaker 1: this big show, So gen Cabra go on the whirlwind.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Yeah yeah.
- 9:56Speaker 2: So if if you didn't notice, everything me is a mess.
- 10:01Speaker 2: Right if you're looking at the video right.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Your house getting hit by a tornado.
- 10:04Speaker 2: No, but two days before I left for gen Con,
- 10:08Speaker 2: Kaitlyn woke up no water pressure in the shower, taking
- 10:12Speaker 2: the basement to find that the well pump had separated
- 10:14Speaker 2: from the regulator and was spewing well water into the basement.
- 10:19Speaker 2: Oh no, western half of my basement doesn't have anything
- 10:22Speaker 2: in it right now because it's all packed in behind
- 10:24Speaker 2: me so that they can come and redo the pad
- 10:26Speaker 2: and the carpet on that side of the basement. That happened.
- 10:28Speaker 2: What got a do you? A couple of industrial de
- 10:30Speaker 2: humidfiers from Home Depot rented them. We had a crew
- 10:33Speaker 2: come in to put to humidifiers and fans and stuff
- 10:35Speaker 2: down here, and it took several days to dry out stuff.
- 10:38Speaker 2: And now we're waiting for the contract to come to
- 10:40Speaker 2: finish whatever. So it ended up Wednesday night going out
- 10:43Speaker 2: to gen Con it was good. I wish I could
- 10:46Speaker 2: show you everything, but I don't have anywhere to put
- 10:47Speaker 2: it down here, so it's all upstairs in our spare bedroom,
- 10:50Speaker 2: just laying up there toil somewhere to put it. It
- 10:53Speaker 2: was good. Played a lot of Dagger Heart, which is
- 10:55Speaker 2: another tabletop RPG similar to D and D, but it
- 10:59Speaker 2: uses a different dice system. Kaylen came down on Saturday.
- 11:03Speaker 2: We played, We played Dagger Heart, we played a couple
- 11:05Speaker 2: other board games, went I went out for dinner in
- 11:08Speaker 2: that timeframe of we played Dagger Heart, went head lunch
- 11:13Speaker 2: right her friend. We met her friend and walked around
- 11:17Speaker 2: and got stuff signed by artists and bought some games
- 11:20Speaker 2: and stuff. And her friend's husband had an event that
- 11:23Speaker 2: ended at four, so we ended up going to check
- 11:25Speaker 2: into the hotel with with my friend Steve, and we
- 11:28Speaker 2: walked to the restaurant to get a table. And then
- 11:31Speaker 2: kayl and her friend and her friend's husband were walking
- 11:33Speaker 2: to the restaurant and got caught in the torrential dowpour
- 11:38Speaker 2: and tornado warning all right, so they were walking for
- 11:41Speaker 2: the convention center only like a block and a half
- 11:43Speaker 2: got caught in the really heavy rain. And then while
- 11:46Speaker 2: we were sitting and he did any dinner. The whole restaurant.
- 11:48Speaker 2: Everybody's phone in the restaurant lit up with the emergency
- 11:51Speaker 2: Action warning, you know, and tornado warning. So tornado went
- 11:56Speaker 2: through the south side of Indianapolis, maybe six or seven
- 11:58Speaker 2: blocks from the Conventionous, and had had enough crazy wins
- 12:04Speaker 2: that between the Convention Center and Lucas Oil Stadium, if
- 12:06Speaker 2: you're familiar with NFL stadiums, that's where all the food
- 12:09Speaker 2: trucks were with all their tents and chairs, and so
- 12:14Speaker 2: that all got swept up and tumbled and tents got
- 12:17Speaker 2: destroyed and all that stuff. So, so you can imagine Saturday,
- 12:22Speaker 2: because this was on Saturday of jen Con, the busiest day.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Everybody had to cram into like the hallways and then
- 12:27Speaker 2: like not being around the glass, so like everybody was
- 12:29Speaker 2: kind of crammed up. And then there's part of the
- 12:31Speaker 2: convention hall that decided to you know, spring a leak,
- 12:34Speaker 2: and a curtain of water was coming down. Gosh, uneventful
- 12:38Speaker 2: for everything else. Just a little bit of water, no
- 12:40Speaker 2: big deal. Yeah, And then I came home Sunday, and
- 12:42Speaker 2: Sunday night came home. I was home for less than
- 12:44Speaker 2: twelve hours before I got on a flight to Charlotte,
- 12:49Speaker 2: North Carolina for the annual School Control Room ESPN conference. So,
- 12:54Speaker 2: for those of you who don't know, I worked for
- 12:55Speaker 2: the University of Our Dame doing broadcast media and live
- 12:59Speaker 2: events for the university and athletics. So we have we
- 13:02Speaker 2: have a yearly conference where we go and talk about
- 13:04Speaker 2: what all the other schools are doing and and stuff
- 13:07Speaker 2: like that. And it was fun because there was an
- 13:10Speaker 2: engineering breakout where I got to talk with all the
- 13:12Speaker 2: other school engineer guys and ladies and the team members
- 13:15Speaker 2: and stuff from ESPN, and they were asking about what
- 13:19Speaker 2: we're doing with stream decks and so there were a
- 13:22Speaker 2: couple of good ideas and I was like, wait, but
- 13:24Speaker 2: I'm doing this, this, this, and this and this and
- 13:27Speaker 2: so more of this and ye tying this in and
- 13:30Speaker 2: tying that in. And they're like, oh, what are you
- 13:32Speaker 2: going to set tell us next time you're controlling the
- 13:34Speaker 2: lights and you're the lights and other stuff. I was like,
- 13:39Speaker 2: well yeah, And they're like, well, why don't you just
- 13:42Speaker 2: come up and talk about it then, and so like
- 13:44Speaker 2: I ended about it for a little bit about what
- 13:46Speaker 2: we're doing and what we're what we're integrating and stuff.
- 13:49Speaker 1: And well that's you know what. A sales perspective is
- 13:53Speaker 1: always great, but from a user perspective that is getting
- 13:56Speaker 1: the full use of it, that's even better.
- 13:58Speaker 2: So the guy form ESPN that was running it made
- 14:01Speaker 2: it made a really funny joke. He's like, hey, you guys,
- 14:04Speaker 2: you heard that nor name has a new sponsor, right
- 14:06Speaker 2: because the name has the sponsor tabs on their jersey
- 14:08Speaker 2: this year.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Right, Okay, And he'sa like, hey, it's stream Deck. Oh
- 14:12Speaker 1: my gosh.
- 14:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:18Speaker 2: But it was a good time. So I got to
- 14:20Speaker 2: meet a bunch of guys from other schools that are
- 14:23Speaker 2: doing similar things that we're doing, that are doing upgrades
- 14:25Speaker 2: that we're doing, which led into me being able to
- 14:27Speaker 2: ask a couple pointed questions to our vendor this week
- 14:30Speaker 2: where I was because I was in Canada the last
- 14:31Speaker 2: few days. We're doing a big upgrade NEX summer, so
- 14:34Speaker 2: we're we're in the thurroughs of vendors coming on site
- 14:37Speaker 2: to demo stuff. We're traveling to vendors to look at stuff,
- 14:40Speaker 2: We're getting demo equipment in, we're in and out with
- 14:43Speaker 2: demo equipment, and we just finished an installation of all
- 14:46Speaker 2: of our audio stuff this summer, which is phase one
- 14:48Speaker 2: of two parts. The last six weeks have been just
- 14:52Speaker 2: a whirlwind. It's like I've been gone, I've been home.
- 14:54Speaker 2: I've been gone, I've been home. Plus we did our
- 14:56Speaker 2: trip to the UP in that timeframe too, so I
- 14:58Speaker 2: was gone for days to the UP.
- 15:00Speaker 1: For those of us that don't live in that area,
- 15:03Speaker 1: what is the UP?
- 15:04Speaker 2: The UP stands for the Upper Peninsula, which is the
- 15:07Speaker 2: upper part.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Of Michigan, basically Canada.
- 15:10Speaker 2: So I was actually further north on that trip than
- 15:13Speaker 2: I was the last two days in Canada.
- 15:15Speaker 1: This is kind of comedy. We were watching ID Channel
- 15:17Speaker 1: the other day and there was a scene where they
- 15:20Speaker 1: were talking about having to go to the UP. At
- 15:24Speaker 1: Gloria Alexiby, she goes, what is the up a goo?
- 15:26Speaker 1: Upper Peninsula? Okay, I told you, Yeah, Oh yeah, I know.
- 15:31Speaker 1: I know.
- 15:32Speaker 2: So before I, before I went on the trip, we
- 15:35Speaker 2: had haven't I haven't had a chance to talk on
- 15:37Speaker 2: the show about it is. You guys know that I
- 15:40Speaker 2: have an inverting generator for the camper, which I have
- 15:43Speaker 2: tied into the house when we have emergency power.
- 15:46Speaker 1: Which company manufactures that one.
- 15:48Speaker 2: Predator, which which is sold by Harbor Freight and if
- 15:51Speaker 2: you're looking for a relatively inexpensive inverting generator, the predator
- 15:55Speaker 2: line from Home Harbor Freight is very good. It's a
- 15:58Speaker 2: Honda ei icloned, a fuel injected line eiclone, which is quieter,
- 16:03Speaker 2: whisper light, the quiet stuff, so it's not the huge,
- 16:06Speaker 2: loud construction ones. But I've always been looking for a
- 16:10Speaker 2: solar generator. So I had the opportunity to purchase a
- 16:16Speaker 2: Anchor Solix Home battery back up, which is a rolling, rolling,
- 16:23Speaker 2: little rolling kit, nicely little, but it weighs one hundred
- 16:26Speaker 2: and thirty seven pounds and it's a seventy eight hundred
- 16:32Speaker 2: damp hour, so it's huge. It's huge. It's massive. It's
- 16:35Speaker 2: a big battery backup that I can run acy off of.
- 16:39Speaker 2: I can run forty off of it. Ac I can
- 16:42Speaker 2: run one ten.
- 16:43Speaker 1: How about refrigerator a fruit fridge freezer easily?
- 16:46Speaker 2: Oh easy. But it will run our water pump, which
- 16:48Speaker 2: is two twenty. That was that was the selling point
- 16:51Speaker 2: was I want something that will run the well pump.
- 16:55Speaker 1: So you get your water from a well pump, not
- 16:57Speaker 1: from a city.
- 17:00Speaker 2: Where we are is not annexed by any city. We
- 17:04Speaker 2: don't have We're part of a township, right, Everything that
- 17:07Speaker 2: goes to everything here goes through the county. We're not incorporated,
- 17:10Speaker 2: so no sewer. We have a septic and we have
- 17:14Speaker 2: a well. Oh wow, so two twenty will run my
- 17:18Speaker 2: well pump. So that was the goal, right. The inverting
- 17:21Speaker 2: generator only does one ten. My well pump doesn't run
- 17:23Speaker 2: at one ten. So if we don't have power, I
- 17:25Speaker 2: can power everything but the well pump and the AC.
- 17:28Speaker 2: What's cool about this is that when I bought it,
- 17:30Speaker 2: I got it bundled with the portable foldable four hundred
- 17:35Speaker 2: solar panels.
- 17:36Speaker 1: Nice. Those are a pretty good size, so they're all massive. Yeah.
- 17:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I got four of them, so I have the things. Yes,
- 17:46Speaker 2: because I got I got a bundle that was I
- 17:48Speaker 2: bought two, got too, so it was like there was
- 17:50Speaker 2: no reason not to get four. So I wanted to.
- 17:55Speaker 2: I wanted to try it right. I got it three
- 17:58Speaker 2: days like I ordered it and got it in two days.
- 18:00Speaker 2: It was crazy, like all this stuff just showed up
- 18:02Speaker 2: in my front door. It was the huge boxes and
- 18:04Speaker 2: I was like, poor ups guy was using a hand
- 18:07Speaker 2: DOLLI to bring it all up to the front door.
- 18:09Speaker 1: That's awesome.
- 18:09Speaker 2: So it's the anger SOLX.
- 18:11Speaker 1: You had to look to set them up and try
- 18:13Speaker 1: it out.
- 18:13Speaker 2: Yeah, So I set it up in my backyard and
- 18:16Speaker 2: I was able to plug it into the house and
- 18:18Speaker 2: run whatever I needed to.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Where where does it plug into in the house? Does
- 18:21Speaker 1: somebody have to I have?
- 18:23Speaker 2: I already had it wired, right, I had it wired
- 18:26Speaker 2: for my Inverty generator, so he wired it for two twenty.
- 18:32Speaker 2: My Inverty generator only uses one of the two legs,
- 18:34Speaker 2: so he uses one ten. So I can plug my
- 18:36Speaker 2: Inverty generator to that and it'll power everything that's running.
- 18:39Speaker 1: One ten oh cool.
- 18:41Speaker 2: I can then plug in the battery the solar generator
- 18:46Speaker 2: and it'll provide forty wow, so I can then power
- 18:50Speaker 2: other devices. So I had to then mix. I had
- 18:53Speaker 2: to get some cables, some extension cables for the solar panels,
- 18:56Speaker 2: and then I laid them out in the yard and
- 18:59Speaker 2: tried it. I only laid out two because I didn't
- 19:01Speaker 2: want to get all four out because they're massive, and
- 19:03Speaker 2: I'll say I'm a little disappointed in the power. In
- 19:05Speaker 2: the power output of the solar panels, there are four
- 19:07Speaker 2: hundred watts and in series I was only getting about
- 19:11Speaker 2: three hundred watts total off two panels, so packed it
- 19:16Speaker 2: all up, put it in the camper because we took
- 19:19Speaker 2: the camper to the UP this year. It will run
- 19:21Speaker 2: the AC in our camper for about three and a
- 19:23Speaker 2: half hours on the battery only if not, if I'm
- 19:26Speaker 2: not plugged into solar, it will run the camp or
- 19:28Speaker 2: AC pulling pulling about two thousand watts. It's a lot
- 19:33Speaker 2: for about three and a half four hours. It was hot,
- 19:35Speaker 2: we were fighting the wildfire smoke, so we didn't want
- 19:37Speaker 2: to be with the windows out, so we ran the
- 19:39Speaker 2: AC four while and then once we got up to
- 19:41Speaker 2: the UP then I was able to get it out,
- 19:43Speaker 2: lay out the panels and continuously charge it. But we
- 19:46Speaker 2: didn't have to run the AC, but we did charge.
- 19:48Speaker 2: We did run everything off of the battery in the
- 19:51Speaker 2: camper and the solar. I put out two panels and
- 19:55Speaker 2: it charged up between four hundred and six hundred watts
- 20:00Speaker 2: during the day and it kept ustriggle charged and we
- 20:03Speaker 2: were self sufficient, which was nice.
- 20:05Speaker 1: What type of investment is if somebody wants to get
- 20:08Speaker 1: Because I was in Costco the other day in Generak
- 20:10Speaker 1: was there, you know selling there as they come out
- 20:12Speaker 1: and they install it the whole bit. What type of
- 20:14Speaker 1: investment does somebody need to get something like what you
- 20:17Speaker 1: had there? Uh shine, I.
- 20:19Speaker 2: Think all in all, everything combined was close to forty
- 20:22Speaker 2: five hundred bucks.
- 20:23Speaker 1: So the bat ate mind.
- 20:25Speaker 2: Yeah, it gives me the peace of mind. I can
- 20:26Speaker 2: run the well pump and if I don't have solar
- 20:31Speaker 2: like if if it's the middle of the night and
- 20:32Speaker 2: we need to run the well pump, like the well
- 20:34Speaker 2: pump doesn't run continuously, right, it just runs, then you
- 20:37Speaker 2: can you're not going to be running the well pump continuously.
- 20:40Speaker 1: So is the well pump in your house? Yes, it's
- 20:43Speaker 1: in the.
- 20:43Speaker 2: Closet right there, and that's where it was speeling all
- 20:45Speaker 2: the water from.
- 20:46Speaker 1: Like oh wow, so.
- 20:48Speaker 2: The well pump is in the house. So you know, theoretically,
- 20:55Speaker 2: if we don't need the ace and we run the
- 20:57Speaker 2: well pump when we need to to pipe charge up
- 21:01Speaker 2: the lines and then needs the pressure to do what
- 21:02Speaker 2: we need to indefinitely because the sun right so with
- 21:07Speaker 2: four panels on, I haven't done it in four panels
- 21:09Speaker 2: in parallel or anything like that.
- 21:11Speaker 1: From what I heard about solar shoon is it can
- 21:14Speaker 1: be completely phenomenal to have when you just don't have
- 21:19Speaker 1: that ability. And even just for your devices, whether it
- 21:22Speaker 1: be you know, your smartphone or a tablet and you
- 21:25Speaker 1: just want to give it a charge, they can be great.
- 21:28Speaker 1: You just be able to direct to the sun. You
- 21:30Speaker 1: could charge your devices like that. Right.
- 21:32Speaker 2: Yeah, So it's like I said, it's at full charge,
- 21:35Speaker 2: it's gonna last. If I just need to run my
- 21:38Speaker 2: house without the well pomp or anything, I'm gonna get
- 21:41Speaker 2: twenty twenty four hours easy. It has like a time remaining,
- 21:45Speaker 2: like based on draw. Right, So if I plugged in
- 21:47Speaker 2: the fridge, I'd have to look at what the draw
- 21:49Speaker 2: was when I had the fridge and the freezer plugged
- 21:51Speaker 2: into it. But I mean, I'm not gonna be running
- 21:54Speaker 2: my compute in an emergency. I'm not gonna be running
- 21:56Speaker 2: non essentials and drying power for no reason. You just
- 22:00Speaker 2: have to do a budget. But I can supplement, right.
- 22:02Speaker 2: So let's say it's overnight and we need to run
- 22:05Speaker 2: the AC for some reason. We can run the AC
- 22:07Speaker 2: and then if the battery gets too low overnight, I
- 22:12Speaker 2: can then flip over to the inverty generator and charge
- 22:15Speaker 2: the battery off the invert e generor while I'm charging
- 22:17Speaker 2: the house or running the house too, so very cool.
- 22:20Speaker 1: All right, listen, we got to take a quick break
- 22:22Speaker 1: we come back. I got something brand new to show you,
- 22:24Speaker 1: guys that I think you might like. It's an upgrade
- 22:27Speaker 1: to technology that was out. I got it in the
- 22:29Speaker 1: mail one day. I had no idea what was coming
- 22:31Speaker 1: to me, and so i'ms gonna be sending it back soon.
- 22:34Speaker 1: But I want to show you, guys when we come
- 22:36Speaker 1: back with more of tech Talk Radio. I'm Andy Taylor,
- 22:39Speaker 1: I'm Sean de Weird, and I'm justin. Let me find
- 22:42Speaker 1: us on the web and tech talk radio dot com.
- 22:44Speaker 1: We'll be right back now back to tech Talk Radio.
- 22:48Speaker 1: I really enjoy listening to your show. It's really cool. Well,
- 22:51Speaker 1: thank you very the informative US rookie. Are you a rookie.
- 22:55Speaker 1: I'm very much a rookie. Okay, guys, I want to
- 23:00Speaker 1: show you something I thought was kind of cool. Asus
- 23:03Speaker 1: has been great to us. You know, we've looked at
- 23:05Speaker 1: some really cool stuff over the last couple of years,
- 23:08Speaker 1: and I got something the other day, you know, sent
- 23:12Speaker 1: to me, and I thought, the heck is this? Because
- 23:15Speaker 1: you know none of that I get maybe a little
- 23:17Speaker 1: less say, here's what's coming up. You wanted to surprise
- 23:19Speaker 1: me with this one. This is from Asus. This is
- 23:23Speaker 1: the Asus zen Book Duo. The Asus Enbook Duo is
- 23:30Speaker 1: basically and I'm showing it on the camera if you
- 23:32Speaker 1: want to check out our video. Basically, it's a it's
- 23:35Speaker 1: a laptop a little beefier, right, It's got those These
- 23:39Speaker 1: are fans, uh for the design. The Sarah aluminum finish
- 23:45Speaker 1: resists scratches and fingerprints. It's kind of a mix of
- 23:49Speaker 1: ceramic and aluminum used in the aerospace and luxury watch
- 23:53Speaker 1: industries for strength, lightness, and luxurious tactile feel. And over
- 23:58Speaker 1: the last couple of years, I've look at a lot
- 24:00Speaker 1: of laptops that have been real thin, real light, and
- 24:04Speaker 1: this feels good again to hold something that's kind of beefy.
- 24:08Speaker 1: This is a professional laptop. Somebody said it's a grown
- 24:13Speaker 1: up back to school laptop because it could be used
- 24:16Speaker 1: with that. I mean, you got USBC, You've got you know,
- 24:19Speaker 1: just a USB three point one, You've got HDMI, you've
- 24:23Speaker 1: got audio out, get another USB C which is cool.
- 24:27Speaker 1: But when you open it up, what you see is
- 24:31Speaker 1: a fourteen inch three K OLED screen, which is nice.
- 24:36Speaker 1: You've got this trackpad here. It's a haptic track pad.
- 24:40Speaker 1: But what's really cool, And if you've never seen the duo,
- 24:43Speaker 1: you can lift up the Bluetooth keyboard on it. What
- 24:47Speaker 1: look that aside, and what you get is two three
- 24:52Speaker 1: K OLED screens you can then it comes with a
- 24:57Speaker 1: you know a little little stand there. You could stay
- 25:00Speaker 1: on your desk and you could have a screen here
- 25:03Speaker 1: and a screen here. And I demoed this on TV
- 25:06Speaker 1: actually using the I had Da Vinci resolved down here
- 25:13Speaker 1: and I had your regular Windows operating system appear where
- 25:16Speaker 1: I could pick files and drag them down into Resolve.
- 25:19Speaker 1: I mean, it's pretty amazing. It will also pagnate this way,
- 25:23Speaker 1: so if you want to be able to look at
- 25:24Speaker 1: it like a book, you could do that. And it's
- 25:27Speaker 1: a Bluetooth wireless keyboard, which is great. It has abrasion
- 25:32Speaker 1: and resistant codd keys.
- 25:34Speaker 2: That was crazy. You just literally just I didn't really
- 25:37Speaker 2: you had. If nobody looked at that and said that
- 25:39Speaker 2: keyboard comes off, it gives you a display underneath, I
- 25:41Speaker 2: would never have known that, just right, I mean, that's right.
- 25:45Speaker 1: Yeah, that's pretty one of the things they fixed on
- 25:49Speaker 1: the two thousand and four when twenty twenty four When
- 25:52Speaker 1: it first came out, you had this hump here so here.
- 25:55Speaker 1: Now it's almost undiscernible. You can't really tell that it's there.
- 26:01Speaker 1: So they've kind of in describable. Yeah, that that thing
- 26:04Speaker 1: would that word, I don't have. The word. Word is
- 26:08Speaker 1: long battery life even with the you know, dual screens. Uh,
- 26:13Speaker 1: and it just I was very pleased with it. It
- 26:16Speaker 1: has the Intel, It runs the Intel Ultra nine with
- 26:22Speaker 1: it also features a neuroprocess. It's kind of graphics card.
- 26:25Speaker 1: It is the Intel graphics card that is on it. Okay,
- 26:28Speaker 1: so it's not a gaming PC, but it's a productivity Yeah.
- 26:31Speaker 1: I mean you could use it. And that's what's truly
- 26:33Speaker 1: cool is you know it's on right now. Once you
- 26:36Speaker 1: take that keyboard off, Uh, it should basically light up
- 26:39Speaker 1: this other one. Maybe I haven't.
- 26:42Speaker 2: Probably have to log in for it to show for
- 26:45Speaker 2: it to be able to do that.
- 26:46Speaker 1: But it is pretty it's pretty amazing and that is
- 26:51Speaker 1: really cool. Really pleased with it. Uh.
- 26:53Speaker 2: You never seen designed like that.
- 26:55Speaker 1: It also comes with one terabyte SSD thirty two gigs
- 26:59Speaker 1: of RAM. It comes with a sleeve that you can
- 27:03Speaker 1: carry it in and a stylus as well. So you
- 27:06Speaker 1: get a pen style of said, if you want to,
- 27:08Speaker 1: you know, draw on the screen, use the bottom one
- 27:10Speaker 1: for art. What's the MSRP on this twenty five hundred bucks?
- 27:15Speaker 1: So but for you know, the Ultra nine processor, that
- 27:19Speaker 1: much memory. The features of the two the previous screens
- 27:23Speaker 1: were led. This is OLED. The three K two three
- 27:26Speaker 1: k l ED OLED screens makes it real nice. I'm sorry,
- 27:30Speaker 1: but I got to say for what did you say,
- 27:32Speaker 1: twenty five hundred rugs? Yeah, yeah, twenty five thirty two
- 27:36Speaker 1: gigs a RAM is worth two thousand alone. It's crazy,
- 27:39Speaker 1: isn't it. It's uh, you look at you look at
- 27:44Speaker 1: the price of the systems now and you go, well,
- 27:47Speaker 1: I want to I want to build a system, and
- 27:49Speaker 1: I wanted to have memory, and Sean and I talked
- 27:51Speaker 1: about building your own is not even feasible anymore. No,
- 27:54Speaker 1: the cost of RAM and the cost of the storage
- 27:58Speaker 1: as well.
- 27:59Speaker 2: So we just came from a vendor who deals with
- 28:02Speaker 2: storage and media and they said six six to eight
- 28:06Speaker 2: months ago they had a vendor that just didn't deliver
- 28:11Speaker 2: their storage. Oh no, So they were relying on storage
- 28:15Speaker 2: from a vendor to put in their product and ship
- 28:18Speaker 2: it to customers. And they just didn't deliver, oh, because
- 28:23Speaker 2: they didn't have it, so they had to scramble. And
- 28:26Speaker 2: you know, you said something about they were looking for
- 28:28Speaker 2: servers under couch cushions like that. Kind of the scenarios comical,
- 28:32Speaker 2: but it's crazy how wide impact this memory shortage and
- 28:38Speaker 2: supply chain issue has become. And there's even articles saying
- 28:42Speaker 2: that all of twenty twenty seven RAM is allocated already.
- 28:47Speaker 1: Wow, it's it, I believe it. It's not good. I
- 28:51Speaker 1: heard that while DDR five right now is very pricey,
- 28:56Speaker 1: that it's actually now affecting DDR four because people are
- 28:59Speaker 1: going back and using DDR form memory now in maybe
- 29:03Speaker 1: previous generation motherboards and they're having a hard time getting
- 29:06Speaker 1: those now. Yep. And it's you know, I'm sitting on
- 29:09Speaker 1: a gold mine over here. I've got like sixty four
- 29:11Speaker 1: gigs of DDR four. I should probably sell that.
- 29:14Speaker 2: Yeah, it's crazy. I upgraded like a year, like maybe
- 29:19Speaker 2: eight to months to a year before Crucial decided not
- 29:23Speaker 2: to sell RAM anymore. So it's like I got in
- 29:26Speaker 2: right under the right under the wire, And I feel
- 29:28Speaker 2: bad for anybody's trying to build a piec of right now.
- 29:31Speaker 1: I'm kind of upset because you remember when I bought
- 29:33Speaker 1: the ASIST motherboard and the Intel processor, like two hundred
- 29:38Speaker 1: and fifty bucks for both of them, which was great.
- 29:41Speaker 1: They had DDR five and I didn't buy it and
- 29:45Speaker 1: it was unclear it's and I should have bought it
- 29:47Speaker 1: because the price, I think the price on it was
- 29:49Speaker 1: one fifty as well for I want to say, thirty
- 29:52Speaker 1: two gigabytes, and I just passed on it, and that
- 29:56Speaker 1: was idiotic. But yeah, just it's just the way that
- 29:59Speaker 1: the the industry is going right now. You never know
- 30:01Speaker 1: what's gonna happen in the future. Yeah, I know, is
- 30:05Speaker 1: it gonna level out? Are they gonna make it? But
- 30:07Speaker 1: now we're saying twenty twenty seven, we're not gonna see
- 30:09Speaker 1: any relief, you know, and graphics cards also going up,
- 30:13Speaker 1: so it's it's better to just buy it, just buy
- 30:15Speaker 1: a pre bad.
- 30:16Speaker 2: Maybe we'll see trend backwards a little bit in terms
- 30:19Speaker 2: of video development and we won't see so many high
- 30:22Speaker 2: powered games that are just requiring bleeding edgepcs does maybe
- 30:27Speaker 2: we'll actually get some quality development done that's not gonna.
- 30:30Speaker 1: Happen, Yeah, exactly, all right. One of the things we
- 30:32Speaker 1: were talking about, you know, with generators and everything, and
- 30:37Speaker 1: I know that some people in Green Valley. I know
- 30:39Speaker 1: a woman that has sort of looking at this in
- 30:43Speaker 1: the term sometimes brings up I don't want to say
- 30:46Speaker 1: negative connotation, but it makes you go prepping. And I know,
- 30:52Speaker 1: justin you've been kind of delving into the whole idea
- 30:56Speaker 1: of this. Can you tell us what that is about? Well,
- 31:00Speaker 1: I mean I kind of just alluded to it just
- 31:03Speaker 1: a moment ago when I said that the comment you
- 31:05Speaker 1: never know what's gonna happen in the future, Yeah, and
- 31:09Speaker 1: that that's kind of what it was. A couple of
- 31:11Speaker 1: weeks ago. I would just sit around watching some YouTube
- 31:14Speaker 1: videos with Mysa and my wife, and I was just
- 31:18Speaker 1: watching some videos about this, like you know, like like Yellowstone,
- 31:23Speaker 1: you know, you know in the future is gonna blow up,
- 31:26Speaker 1: and then like you know, the San Andreas fault line,
- 31:28Speaker 1: and there's another fault line in Missouri that nobody knows
- 31:31Speaker 1: about that's gonna blow up at some point, you know,
- 31:34Speaker 1: like there's all these natural disasters. And my wife was
- 31:38Speaker 1: kind of freaking out a little bit, and she was like, hey,
- 31:40Speaker 1: don't you think that you know what happens to something
- 31:43Speaker 1: like this happens like she for her first question was
- 31:47Speaker 1: is the power wall gonna hold up? Because we have
- 31:50Speaker 1: the Tesla power wall, right, and if you don't know,
- 31:53Speaker 1: the Tesla power wall is like a giant whole home
- 31:56Speaker 1: battery system. We got a power wall, but the reason
- 32:01Speaker 1: behind it was because we have testsa solar and the
- 32:04Speaker 1: solar is generating power during the day and we're not
- 32:09Speaker 1: home during the day, so that power that's being generated
- 32:12Speaker 1: is being sold back to the grid at pennies on
- 32:15Speaker 1: the dollar. So I said, why am I doing this?
- 32:18Speaker 1: I should just you know, put it in a battery,
- 32:20Speaker 1: and so I bought a battery from Tests. So now
- 32:24Speaker 1: what happens is is the solar panels charge the battery.
- 32:27Speaker 1: The battery powers our house at night, so we don't
- 32:30Speaker 1: have to use the grid. So that was kind of
- 32:32Speaker 1: the first step. And I told her, I said, yeah, well,
- 32:34Speaker 1: the power wall will hold up for maybe twenty four hours,
- 32:39Speaker 1: you know, if we go really you know, easy on it.
- 32:42Speaker 1: But after that I said, no, we're screwed. I was like,
- 32:46Speaker 1: I don't have any plan after that, and then we
- 32:49Speaker 1: started talking about it. I said, you know, honestly, it
- 32:51Speaker 1: probably would be good to just have I don't know,
- 32:56Speaker 1: thirty maybe sixty days of backup supplies, you know, in
- 33:00Speaker 1: the case of a really bad blizzard or you know,
- 33:03Speaker 1: an e MP or something that. You know. But I said,
- 33:06Speaker 1: you know, if there's a major disaster, Yeah, let's let's
- 33:09Speaker 1: have some sort of a backup. So we started talking
- 33:12Speaker 1: about it, and I started watching some of these prepper
- 33:14Speaker 1: There's thousands of prepper videos on YouTube, and a lot
- 33:18Speaker 1: of these guys are like really crazy into prepping, yeah,
- 33:24Speaker 1: and I'm not like that. I just was like, look,
- 33:27Speaker 1: I just want a basic prep kid. So we came
- 33:29Speaker 1: up with this idea. We're like, okay, fine, So we
- 33:32Speaker 1: go to Costco and one of the things we buy,
- 33:36Speaker 1: I bought a couple of these you know those big
- 33:37Speaker 1: yellow uh black black u yeah, with yellow lids on them. Yeah,
- 33:42Speaker 1: those are so I bought a couple of those, right,
- 33:45Speaker 1: So those are just going to store supplies. Then we bought,
- 33:48Speaker 1: you know, we always buy big, huge, like thirty two
- 33:52Speaker 1: packs of toilet paper. Okay, fine, we bought another one
- 33:55Speaker 1: of those because we need it, and I threw like
- 33:58Speaker 1: five rolls of toilet paper in one of those pails.
- 34:01Speaker 1: Here go. Then we bought a thirty two pack of
- 34:05Speaker 1: bottled water, and and that we're not gonna use that,
- 34:08Speaker 1: We're not gonna drink that. That is gonna be stored
- 34:11Speaker 1: in the basement. And so next time we go to Costco,
- 34:15Speaker 1: I'm gonna buy another thirty two pack of water, and
- 34:18Speaker 1: the next time another thirty two pack of water. Because
- 34:22Speaker 1: water is the most important thing you're gonna need. So
- 34:26Speaker 1: if you can't use your own drinking water, if the
- 34:29Speaker 1: water system fails, you're gonna need a backup so to have.
- 34:34Speaker 1: I think they say it's one gallon per person per day, right,
- 34:39Speaker 1: minimum minimum minimum. Yeah, So if I have five or
- 34:44Speaker 1: six packs of thirty two packs of water or a
- 34:48Speaker 1: thirty two count water, that's gonna last us a couple
- 34:52Speaker 1: of weeks maybe, okay, but that's not counting washing yourself.
- 34:58Speaker 1: We're not gonna use drinking water for that. So on
- 35:00Speaker 1: top of that, I'm gonna buy some just standard old
- 35:04Speaker 1: jugs of regular water, whatever's the cheapest on the shelf,
- 35:09Speaker 1: because that's gonna be used for washing and uh like
- 35:13Speaker 1: washing ourselves, washing our dishes, whatever. Then I bought some
- 35:19Speaker 1: led solar lanterns. Oh simple, I mean Costco, there were
- 35:23Speaker 1: like fifteen bucks for like a solar led lantern that
- 35:28Speaker 1: does have a battery backup in case you want to
- 35:30Speaker 1: use it. You can put d batteries in it, but
- 35:33Speaker 1: otherwise otherwise it has built in solar and a built
- 35:36Speaker 1: in battery. So about a couple of those. Then I
- 35:38Speaker 1: bought some flashlights. Then I bought some canned food, just
- 35:43Speaker 1: simply going to Walmart. Just get some canned food, canned lentils,
- 35:47Speaker 1: canned vegetables, some dried pasta long shelf ice type stuff. Yeah,
- 35:52Speaker 1: long long shelf light. Just simple stuff like I'm not
- 35:56Speaker 1: going out and buying crazy MR packets or the you
- 36:00Speaker 1: know four paid Those mrs are good though, ere right now,
- 36:07Speaker 1: are you kidding me? MRIs are good. I liked them. Yeah,
- 36:11Speaker 1: because you've never been in the military. I used to
- 36:13Speaker 1: go to the surplus No I was until air patrol. Oh,
- 36:16Speaker 1: we would eat m ras. But I would watch the
- 36:19Speaker 1: video here folks quote unquote military. Okay, we would go
- 36:26Speaker 1: to the certain the surplus story. We would buy them,
- 36:29Speaker 1: and I love them. I thought these are good. You
- 36:31Speaker 1: know you're crazy anyway. Yeah, so back to my point,
- 36:37Speaker 1: No MRIs, but if I need to, yes, I would,
- 36:40Speaker 1: I would buy some MRIs. Yes, they are edible You
- 36:44Speaker 1: can survive on them and they last a long time,
- 36:47Speaker 1: but they're my least favorite options. So I would buy
- 36:50Speaker 1: like pasta, rice, canned vegetables, canned meat, right, uh, you know, lentils,
- 36:57Speaker 1: things that I can survive on with that first, and
- 37:00Speaker 1: that's what I would store in these bins. Then yeah,
- 37:02Speaker 1: if I need to, I'll buy some memories packs or
- 37:04Speaker 1: whatever like that. But then on top of that first
- 37:08Speaker 1: aid kit, you know, and not just a basic first
- 37:11Speaker 1: ay kit, I'm talking about like an extreme first aid
- 37:14Speaker 1: kit with like splints, bandages, like tourniquits, right, you know,
- 37:21Speaker 1: all the stuff that you would need in an actual emergency.
- 37:25Speaker 1: So that's kind of my my prepper kit is just
- 37:29Speaker 1: stuff like that. It's not going to be crazy. I'm
- 37:32Speaker 1: not looking to survive for like six months to a year,
- 37:35Speaker 1: because at that point you've got a whole nother situation
- 37:39Speaker 1: on your hands, you know. Okay, So justin I'm wondering though.
- 37:41Speaker 1: During the at the beginning of the pandemic, a lot
- 37:45Speaker 1: of people obviously we kind of you can't really joke
- 37:48Speaker 1: about it, but you know, toilet paper paper, Oh, we
- 37:51Speaker 1: can joke about it all day long. It was hard
- 37:53Speaker 1: to find a lot of this stuff. And you know,
- 37:56Speaker 1: luckily Gloria was a coup hunter. We have a room,
- 37:59Speaker 1: a bedroom that is just basically already a prepper I
- 38:03Speaker 1: get in a way, yes, because she would buy stuff
- 38:06Speaker 1: with coupons, which a lot of stories just don't do
- 38:08Speaker 1: any more like they used to. But we would stock
- 38:11Speaker 1: the shelves. So it was during that time it was
- 38:14Speaker 1: like never had to worry about running to the store.
- 38:17Speaker 1: I had dry goods, I had water, we had paper,
- 38:20Speaker 1: so we could use that. Do you think people became
- 38:24Speaker 1: more aware of that because of the pandemic. I do.
- 38:27Speaker 1: I think that was a thing. And Sean please chime
- 38:31Speaker 1: in here, but I do think that was kind of
- 38:33Speaker 1: an enlightening moment for people.
- 38:36Speaker 2: Well, I mean before the pandemic, all you had was
- 38:40Speaker 2: when there was like a threat of bad weather or
- 38:42Speaker 2: a blizzard, and we would go buy milk and eggs.
- 38:45Speaker 2: And then you saw the pandemic when supply chain stuff
- 38:48Speaker 2: came and people were like, oh, I'm not gonna have
- 38:51Speaker 2: access to the favorite thing that I always get. And
- 38:54Speaker 2: people started hoarding those things because they're like, I don't
- 38:57Speaker 2: know when the next time I'm gonna get X or why,
- 39:00Speaker 2: And it was hilarious because places like Costco, walmart Meyer
- 39:05Speaker 2: whatever put a put the slap down on people trying
- 39:10Speaker 2: to return profitable items during pandemic. So somebody would go
- 39:15Speaker 2: in and buy thirty packs to toilet paper because they
- 39:18Speaker 2: had no limit, Like they didn't care. The corporations are
- 39:21Speaker 2: making their money, they don't care who buys it. And
- 39:23Speaker 2: then people were trying to sell it outside of you know,
- 39:26Speaker 2: for resale right, and people were like, I'm not paying
- 39:29Speaker 2: your scalping prices, and then they'd take it back and
- 39:32Speaker 2: try to get refunded. You know, people would have thousands
- 39:35Speaker 2: of dollars worth of toiletry products or napkins and paper
- 39:38Speaker 2: towel and all that stuff and Costco nah, and they'd
- 39:41Speaker 2: be stuck with it. And then people would just buy
- 39:43Speaker 2: it it. Then they can't get rid of it, so
- 39:45Speaker 2: they have to rock bottom of their prices. And it
- 39:47Speaker 2: was good. They good good because scalping is is a scourge.
- 39:52Speaker 1: Yeah, so I'm wondering it's always gonna be. We have
- 39:56Speaker 1: to take a break. But I'm wondering is it better
- 39:59Speaker 1: to do you're doing justin and buy, you know, get
- 40:02Speaker 1: those storage containers are great. I've got a bunch of
- 40:04Speaker 1: those to do it that way and just kind of
- 40:07Speaker 1: slowly build up rather than going out to the store
- 40:10Speaker 1: in one thing. We're buying everything today.
- 40:13Speaker 2: You gotta do it slowly.
- 40:14Speaker 1: You got it slowly, right, put it together? Is that
- 40:16Speaker 1: what you think?
- 40:16Speaker 2: Sean, Well, that's what I've done, and I'll talk about
- 40:19Speaker 2: it after the break.
- 40:20Speaker 1: But all right, and I will tell you my thoughts
- 40:23Speaker 1: right after the break. All right with tech Talk Radio.
- 40:26Speaker 1: I'm Andy Taylor, I'm Sean Daward, and I'm justin. Let
- 40:29Speaker 1: me tweet us at tech talk Radio. We'll be right
- 40:32Speaker 1: back and now fact to tech talk Radio. Hi, this
- 40:36Speaker 1: is a Colin Macria whose line is it? Anyway you're
- 40:38Speaker 1: listening to tech Talk radio. I don't know how it works.
- 40:41Speaker 1: It's all magical stuff.
- 40:43Speaker 2: To me, So Ady asked before, like, should you start
- 40:47Speaker 2: slow on building your prepout bag or bug out bag
- 40:50Speaker 2: or bugging bag or whatever. I just recommend you do
- 40:53Speaker 2: it right, because it's a it's a process.
- 40:55Speaker 1: Right.
- 40:56Speaker 2: You don't just want to go and buy one thousand
- 40:58Speaker 2: dollars worth of food or perishable goods or non perishables
- 41:02Speaker 2: right and then realize that like everything still technically has
- 41:07Speaker 2: an expiration dat right, You got to rotate things in
- 41:08Speaker 2: ro do things out, use your stock, but replenish it.
- 41:12Speaker 2: So like Justin said, we're not going to break into
- 41:15Speaker 2: that water. Well, if you do break into that water,
- 41:17Speaker 2: if you open it, you replace it with a closed
- 41:19Speaker 2: pack right away, so that you never have a non
- 41:22Speaker 2: closed pack of water. So that way you're always refilling.
- 41:25Speaker 2: So starting slow, And I think one of the biggest
- 41:28Speaker 2: misconceptions of like prepping is people are like, oh, where's
- 41:31Speaker 2: my bug out bag?
- 41:33Speaker 1: Yeah, bug out bag, that's the next bag. Yeah, the
- 41:37Speaker 1: com go.
- 41:37Speaker 2: Bags, right, that's important to have if you need to
- 41:39Speaker 2: get out of your house in a hurry, whether it's
- 41:42Speaker 2: a wildfire, natural disaster, or whatever. Ninety percent of the
- 41:47Speaker 2: time I've done a lot of research to the prep stuff.
- 41:49Speaker 2: I've I've gone down the rabbit hole videos, which I'll
- 41:52Speaker 2: explain something else about videos in a second year is
- 41:54Speaker 2: that more often than not, you're not going to need
- 41:57Speaker 2: to bug out, you're going to need to bug in.
- 42:00Speaker 2: So you're going to be needed to stay in your home,
- 42:03Speaker 2: away from the chaos, away from the disaster, whatever. So
- 42:07Speaker 2: having a plan for both is important. You have a
- 42:09Speaker 2: go bag that you can grab and go with important
- 42:12Speaker 2: documents of flash drive with everything you need on of
- 42:14Speaker 2: for your house, et cetera, clothes and food, but you
- 42:18Speaker 2: should keep that together with stuff that can maintain you
- 42:22Speaker 2: for a minimum of seventy two hours. Right, seventy two
- 42:26Speaker 2: hours is kind of the crisis timeline where you either
- 42:30Speaker 2: have mutual aid coming or mutual destruction. So it's like
- 42:35Speaker 2: you then change your plan based on that. But again
- 42:39Speaker 2: I recommend watching some YouTube videos. FEMA actually has some
- 42:43Speaker 2: really good resources on prepping and guidelines and stuff like
- 42:46Speaker 2: that too. Yeah, but this whole time, Justin was talking
- 42:50Speaker 2: about the prepping in the Doom and Gloom like he
- 42:53Speaker 2: was pretty doom and gloom. If you can see the video,
- 42:58Speaker 2: Justin has this huge TV behind him. It's rolling, always
- 43:00Speaker 2: rolling through fancy looking videos and flowers and whatever backgrounds.
- 43:06Speaker 1: It's been skulls.
- 43:09Speaker 2: And doom and mushroom clouds, but it's all if you
- 43:15Speaker 2: don't pay attention, you just think it's like nice rainbowy
- 43:19Speaker 2: flowery colors like which which usually is because it reacts
- 43:22Speaker 2: to your head.
- 43:23Speaker 1: I want to see the screen.
- 43:24Speaker 2: Were trying to get it set back to where it
- 43:26Speaker 2: was when were that, But it sounds like a delic
- 43:29Speaker 2: but then all of a sudden, these big skulls roll
- 43:30Speaker 2: in and then there's a big cloud and it's like
- 43:34Speaker 2: it was the perfect scenario, the perfect scenario for Doom
- 43:38Speaker 2: and Gloom. So skip back to the before the last
- 43:40Speaker 2: break and check it out because it's hilarious.
- 43:42Speaker 1: Yeah, when I was talking the last break, yeah that's
- 43:44Speaker 1: where you want to look at. I can't find it
- 43:46Speaker 1: right now on the screen, but yeah, that was That
- 43:49Speaker 1: was kind of funny that Sean mentioned that during the break.
- 43:51Speaker 1: All right, we have answered a couple of questions from listeners. Uh, well,
- 43:56Speaker 1: you know, we kind of been away, but we got My.
- 43:58Speaker 2: Favorite part of the show. I love it answer the
- 44:00Speaker 2: questions because it just connects us with our listeners and
- 44:03Speaker 2: allows us to answer.
- 44:04Speaker 1: All right, this one is from Diana, says, my sister
- 44:09Speaker 1: who lives in Tucson, got a new laptop computer and
- 44:12Speaker 1: gave me her old Windows ten machine. That's pretty nice.
- 44:15Speaker 1: Right when I turned it on, I was shocked the
- 44:20Speaker 1: screen was full of icons. I asked her, and she
- 44:24Speaker 1: said each one was a programmer, even photos she had
- 44:26Speaker 1: downloaded from the internet. And she wants to know a
- 44:29Speaker 1: virus or yeah, our virus, should I get rid of them.
- 44:33Speaker 1: I've been told once too many icons was bad. Thanks
- 44:37Speaker 1: Diana in seboudiita wipe it? What wipe the computer? What
- 44:44Speaker 1: if you're on Windows ten with those, Sanya, What if
- 44:47Speaker 1: there's valuable programs on there that she wants to use, Sean.
- 44:50Speaker 2: What's her sister's computer, She's gonna want to cater to
- 44:52Speaker 2: her own needs. Like if your sister doesn't want to back,
- 44:55Speaker 2: wipe it and build build it yourself.
- 44:57Speaker 1: What if she has like Adobe on there, or she
- 45:00Speaker 1: has Office and it's likely sister's account, not hers.
- 45:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll say, first off, if it's Adobe, the first
- 45:07Speaker 2: time our sister logs in our new computer's gonna boot
- 45:09Speaker 2: her out, right, So wipe it, start over, start fresh.
- 45:13Speaker 1: That's my that's my suggestion.
- 45:15Speaker 2: Right, you don't know what kind of stuff your sister downloaded, viruses, malware,
- 45:20Speaker 2: you don't know. You wipe, wipe, clean it up, and bacteria,
- 45:25Speaker 2: do the whole thing.
- 45:25Speaker 1: Ew.
- 45:27Speaker 2: So that's my suggestion. Like, you can go down, you
- 45:29Speaker 2: go to Window. You can just Google for the Windows
- 45:31Speaker 2: Media Creation tool. You can download a new copy of Windows,
- 45:34Speaker 2: put it on used flash. Right, follow the steps. You're
- 45:36Speaker 2: back to a Windows ten base edition with all the bloat.
- 45:40Speaker 1: But you should not be on Windows ten.
- 45:43Speaker 2: You should not be on Windows ten if the computer
- 45:45Speaker 2: is moving to Windows eleven. Sure, great, there are options
- 45:49Speaker 2: for getting the Windows eleven without a computer that is
- 45:51Speaker 2: technically compatible, so look for those options if you want
- 45:55Speaker 2: Windows ten. They did extend the deadline for Windows ten
- 45:59Speaker 2: a little bit for there, right, so you'll still get
- 46:02Speaker 2: support for Windows head.
- 46:03Speaker 1: But however, yeah, uh, hold on, hold on, hold on,
- 46:09Speaker 1: we're quick. Hold on, guys, I'm talking to Diana right now. Oh,
- 46:14Speaker 1: if you want to be dangerous, put linux. Oh there
- 46:18Speaker 1: you go. There, Linux Mint problems you could tell people,
- 46:23Speaker 1: so you're blue in the face. Hey, give Linux a try,
- 46:27Speaker 1: and honestly, i'm sorry if you don't follow that up
- 46:30Speaker 1: with a model or a you know, a version. It's
- 46:34Speaker 1: so confusing. Linux Mint, you're right, Linux Mint, Yeah, Linux mints.
- 46:38Speaker 1: Linux Mint is literally Windows and you can still run
- 46:43Speaker 1: a lot of your program.
- 46:44Speaker 2: That's free, and you can still use their u I.
- 46:47Speaker 2: So it's say, okay, everybody freaks out in Linux because like,
- 46:49Speaker 2: oh my I have to use terminal, I have to
- 46:51Speaker 2: download stuff, I have to pseudo install Bash whatever, blah
- 46:54Speaker 2: blah blah. No, you don't. There's a graphical interface that
- 46:58Speaker 2: you can go and click on the program and to
- 46:59Speaker 2: downloads it. Just like Windows.
- 47:01Speaker 1: Like Windows, Linux back in the day was so hard
- 47:06Speaker 1: to use, it is not anymore. And as a matter
- 47:09Speaker 1: of fact, I'm kind of on the fence whether or
- 47:12Speaker 1: not I want to upgrade to the next Windows. I
- 47:14Speaker 1: might even myself go straight Linux, right, can you can
- 47:18Speaker 1: you get on Reddit? Does Reddit have some Linux groups
- 47:20Speaker 1: for beginners?
- 47:23Speaker 2: Yeah? Linux and your best Friend and this is it's
- 47:27Speaker 2: good for this chat chatbots, chat shept Rock Claude. They're
- 47:33Speaker 2: good at helping people get into Linux. Linux for basics.
- 47:37Speaker 2: You can get asked for the basic commands from it.
- 47:40Speaker 2: It'll help you out if you're interested in becoming a
- 47:42Speaker 2: little bit more of an advanced user. There's plenty of
- 47:44Speaker 2: resources for it. And it's it's it's it's a little
- 47:47Speaker 2: daunting at first because it's not, oh, I can just
- 47:51Speaker 2: do everything I did in Windows, but you have there's
- 47:54Speaker 2: it's a little more purpose driven, right. It's it's like.
- 47:57Speaker 1: Going from like an Apple iPhone to an Android, Like
- 48:00Speaker 1: it still does the same thing. You just kind of
- 48:03Speaker 1: have to learn the ways around it. Yeah, Linux, the
- 48:07Speaker 1: l I and UX you can look it up and
- 48:09Speaker 1: if you're on some of the groups, or you want
- 48:11Speaker 1: to ask your your AI system if you're if you're
- 48:14Speaker 1: using one, what it's all about, it might be able
- 48:16Speaker 1: to help you. I got to tell you a story.
- 48:17Speaker 1: I got a laptop end the other day. And this
- 48:20Speaker 1: came from a friend of mine I've worked with in
- 48:22Speaker 1: radio before, not at the station.
- 48:24Speaker 2: But anyway.
- 48:26Speaker 1: The laptop is a del It's an I five, and
- 48:30Speaker 1: you know, it's a pretty cool system. But he said
- 48:32Speaker 1: it couldn't open any browsers. He was having a hard
- 48:35Speaker 1: time opening anything, couldn't save anything, couldn't understand what was
- 48:38Speaker 1: going on with it. And so I opened up the
- 48:41Speaker 1: lid and you know, fired it up, gave me the code,
- 48:44Speaker 1: so I was able to get into it, and right
- 48:46Speaker 1: away I got the message, you know, low storage, and
- 48:49Speaker 1: I opened up a Windows Explorer to take a look.
- 48:52Speaker 1: He had nine megabytes left of a two hundred and
- 48:54Speaker 1: fifty gigabyte drive. Oh my gosh, that's it. And you know,
- 48:59Speaker 1: if you can open a browser, browsers use cash, they
- 49:02Speaker 1: use all this stuff to open up. You know it's
- 49:04Speaker 1: gonna fail. Things are going to crash. You're not go
- 49:06Speaker 1: You're just try and save anything. The thing is, now
- 49:10Speaker 1: you have to make a decision. And here's here's my question.
- 49:13Speaker 1: What do you guys think this guy's got to make
- 49:15Speaker 1: a decision. I was able to move about one hundred
- 49:19Speaker 1: gigabytes off onto some removable storage. But now he's in
- 49:23Speaker 1: a situation he's got a two hundred and fifty gigabyte
- 49:25Speaker 1: drive with one hundred gigabytes of removable storage that he's
- 49:29Speaker 1: going to keep filling up two fifty that's just not
- 49:33Speaker 1: a lot of storage. I just want to ask one question. Yeah,
- 49:37Speaker 1: about this two hundred and fifty gigabyte hard drive? Yeah,
- 49:42Speaker 1: are you living in the year twenty fourteen? What do
- 49:45Speaker 1: you mean because that's what it was in twenty fourteen. Yeah,
- 49:49Speaker 1: the two hundred and fifty gigabyte was good in twenty fourteen, right,
- 49:54Speaker 1: exactly we are in twenty twenty six. What do I
- 49:57Speaker 1: tell him five go to go to a five twelve?
- 50:01Speaker 1: It might go to one terabytor, but one terabytes are
- 50:04Speaker 1: about four hundred and fifty bucks.
- 50:06Speaker 2: But it also depends on what type of storage is
- 50:10Speaker 2: in his computer? Can he upgrade it? Is it soldered on?
- 50:13Speaker 1: Is it is it? Yeah?
- 50:15Speaker 2: Is it upgradeable?
- 50:16Speaker 1: Is it is SSD. I looked it up. So if
- 50:19Speaker 1: it's an.
- 50:19Speaker 2: SSD, you can clone it to a five twelve or
- 50:23Speaker 2: a one terabyte like I would go to a one
- 50:25Speaker 2: terabyte SSD and slap that scene. We're done in there.
- 50:29Speaker 2: One terrorbyt will be more.
- 50:31Speaker 1: The laptop's only worth five hundred bucks, so.
- 50:35Speaker 2: Then buy a new computer with more storifically than at
- 50:37Speaker 2: that point.
- 50:38Speaker 1: Buy a new computer like there, you go, wipe in, put.
- 50:40Speaker 2: A Linux on it. You'll never get to tour. Yeah,
- 50:46Speaker 2: you'll be able to run Firefox in twenty minutes and
- 50:48Speaker 2: put Linux.
- 50:50Speaker 1: All right, we take a break, come back. I want
- 50:52Speaker 1: to show you something real quick that folds. When we
- 50:54Speaker 1: come back with tech talk Radio. I'm Andy Taylor.
- 50:56Speaker 2: I'm sean to red wipe and put a Linux on.
- 50:58Speaker 1: It, and I'm justin leme. I'm not even gonna follow
- 51:02Speaker 1: that up. And now back to tech talk Radio. Andy,
- 51:06Speaker 1: you said you had something that folds. Yes, here it is.
- 51:11Speaker 1: This is pretty cool. A little small right, a cell phone,
- 51:17Speaker 1: not a cell phone.
- 51:18Speaker 2: It looks like it could be like a laptop camera.
- 51:21Speaker 1: Right, it is a mouse. This is the new Logitech
- 51:26Speaker 1: mobile phone, and it basically works just like a mouse, left, right,
- 51:31Speaker 1: click buttons, but it folds completely up and instead of
- 51:35Speaker 1: a wheel, it's a scroll feature, so that's kind of
- 51:38Speaker 1: ergonomic too. It does have an ergonomic feel. It's kind
- 51:41Speaker 1: of claw. Yeah, yeah, you cut the claw go there,
- 51:47Speaker 1: but you can run your figure over the little pad
- 51:50Speaker 1: here and it will give the scroll features, which is great.
- 51:54Speaker 1: It connects via Bluetooth. You can switch between three different
- 51:58Speaker 1: Bluetooth devices, so you can have it on your PC
- 52:01Speaker 1: and then oh, you get your tablet over here, hit
- 52:03Speaker 1: the button and then connect to your tablet and use that.
- 52:07Speaker 1: This is what's amazing is the battery life in this thing.
- 52:10Speaker 1: Thirty days thirty two days for a whole charge. But
- 52:14Speaker 1: here's the thing. It's USBC. So if you plug it
- 52:18Speaker 1: in because you really quickly forgot to charge and you
- 52:20Speaker 1: need to charge, you plug it in one minute, we'll
- 52:25Speaker 1: give you twenty two hours. Oh gosh, that's pretty amazing.
- 52:29Speaker 1: So if you're looking for a battery you want to
- 52:31Speaker 1: carry in your laptop bag and if you don't have Bluetooth,
- 52:34Speaker 1: a mouse, a mouse save, you don't have blue tooth,
- 52:39Speaker 1: you can go ahead and plug into a with a
- 52:42Speaker 1: USBC USBA adapter. You could do that if you wanted to.
- 52:45Speaker 1: But form, you're gonna send me this, right, this is great.
- 52:49Speaker 1: I ended up buying this. You're gonna you're gonna send
- 52:51Speaker 1: me this, right, I ended up buying it. So you
- 52:57Speaker 1: want this on your Christmas gift list? Yes?
- 52:58Speaker 2: I do.
- 53:00Speaker 1: Uh, they're about seventy nine dollars. Oh that's little price
- 53:04Speaker 1: here for a mouse. So we could buy you know,
- 53:07Speaker 1: one of these for like twenty bucks. But it's again
- 53:10Speaker 1: very comfortable.
- 53:11Speaker 2: Maybe Justin can use it when he has to work
- 53:13Speaker 2: the dipp Dots stand.
- 53:15Speaker 1: Yeah, you work at the ice cream do stand, which
- 53:19Speaker 1: you've been doing. And if I thought we could get
- 53:22Speaker 1: through the whole show without having to talk about this.
- 53:26Speaker 1: If you go to water World and you get ice cream, Justin,
- 53:30Speaker 1: who is an IT specialist and engineer, might be certain
- 53:33Speaker 1: excuse me, it manager manager might be serving you up
- 53:36Speaker 1: the dippin' dots. Yeah, it's no album. You guys, do
- 53:40Speaker 1: right real quick before we end the show. Yes, every year,
- 53:44Speaker 1: right when the kids go back to school, because the
- 53:47Speaker 1: kids run the park. I mean we have a multitude,
- 53:50Speaker 1: like over one thousand kids that run the park. But
- 53:54Speaker 1: when they go back to school, we keep the park open.
- 53:56Speaker 1: Certain parts of it, not the entire park, and the
- 53:59Speaker 1: full time STAF have to run the park, so we
- 54:02Speaker 1: can have We can be attractions, which means we're basically
- 54:06Speaker 1: pushing people down the tubes with the big you know,
- 54:08Speaker 1: like kind of like lifeguards, but we're not really lifeguards,
- 54:12Speaker 1: but you're standing in the hot sun all day and
- 54:14Speaker 1: I can't do that. We can also be park attendants,
- 54:16Speaker 1: where we're basically just taking out trash and sweeping up,
- 54:19Speaker 1: and I don't really deal with trash. We can also
- 54:22Speaker 1: be guest services, where we're taking people in, working security,
- 54:26Speaker 1: checking bags and dealing with angry customers, which again I
- 54:30Speaker 1: really don't do. Or we can be food services. So
- 54:33Speaker 1: food services you're basically flipping burgers, slanging glizzies, or serving
- 54:38Speaker 1: ice cream, and we don't know what we're doing from
- 54:41Speaker 1: day to day. So yesterday I slang lizzies. Today I
- 54:46Speaker 1: was slinging ice cream, and I took two showers, and
- 54:52Speaker 1: I have washed my hands seventeen times and I'm still sticky.
- 54:59Speaker 1: And I don't want to hear ice cream anyway. No
- 55:01Speaker 1: more ice cream. Do they have a Poutine flavored ice cream?
- 55:05Speaker 1: Just shut it up?
- 55:08Speaker 2: Poutine?
- 55:09Speaker 1: All right? Well, thank you for tuning into this week.
