- 1:14How many Canadians does it take to survive a serial killer?
- 1:17We're probably asking this question a lot more in today's episode, Cismicology.
- 1:20We are the priests of Geeks.
- 1:21I'm your host, Christian Ashley, joined today by, of course, the wonderful Dr.
- 1:24Leah Robinson.
- 1:25How's it going, Leah?
- 1:26It's going well.
- 1:28Apparently those Canadians did not fare well.
- 1:33How are you?
- 1:34We'll be getting to that.
- 1:35I'm doing well.
- 1:36I'm ready for the weekend.
- 1:38I've got a whole week, like I said before recording, going to the Outer Banks, be with old college friends, do it once a year.
- 1:43I love doing this to reconnect with them, see their families and go explore the beach.
- 1:48It's going to be a fun time.
- 1:50I said before I'm jealous because I want to see those wild horses.
- 1:54We do plan to see that too.
- 1:55So we, of course, in the middle of our bonus series, our Halloween series this year, the framing device this time around being remakes of a foreign horror film.
- 2:07We've done things like the Ring.
- 2:08I just did one with Kevin for Goodness Gracious.
- 2:12I was just on it and I'm missing it because I'm getting old.
- 2:15I was on it.
- 2:16I liked it, I swear.
- 2:17But there's that.
- 2:18We're doing today, however, one you might not expect, and that's My Bloody Valentine.
- 2:24And you may think, but isn't that an American film?
- 2:27Well, no, because we haven't annexed them yet and we're better off not to.
- 2:31This is actually originally a Canadian film.
- 2:33You may be thinking of my bloody Valentine 3D.
- 2:36So this we'll be discussing both today, focusing on the ones we care about a little more maybe.
- 2:41So any thoughts before we head forward?
- 2:43Leah?
- 2:43Yeah.
- 2:44When you listed like the options, I had seen My Bloody Valentine and I swear in my brain they were in like West Virginia or something because I remember them, it feels like it well.
- 2:55And they're trying really hard to make it seem like they are.
- 2:58They are country.
- 2:59There's some country happening here.
- 3:01They're like all wearing flannel.
- 3:03And I just was like, I can see why I didn't.
- 3:06I questioned you because I was like, that's a foreign.
- 3:09And you're like, Canada.
- 3:10And I was like, oh, okay.
- 3:12So they're kind of cosplaying as West Virginia Virginians in this one, I think.
- 3:17Yeah.
- 3:17The original film does come from our lovely friends to the north.
- 3:20My brother in law included among them.
- 3:22Love him too.
- 3:23Shout out to you.
- 3:23You don't listen to this, but that's fine.
- 3:25So, Leah, we have Just left the drive in for the first time seeing this film.
- 3:31Uh, let's start with 3D.
- 3:32What is your first auto reaction there?
- 3:34We're talking 3D.
- 3:36I enjoyed it.
- 3:38I like the Double Bluff.
- 3:39I.
- 3:40I'm your slasher girly though.
- 3:41I'm into the slasher flex, so, you know, scream, heart, heart.
- 3:46But for me, I would leave that movie thinking I had a really fun time.
- 3:52Is my life changed?
- 3:54No.
- 3:55However, it was a really, really good time.
- 3:59Quite.
- 4:00If I didn't see it in 3D, which I didn't when I watched it.
- 4:05Pretty violent though.
- 4:07Pretty violent as it goes.
- 4:08Like it, it definitely, you know, don't value anything in your, your head or your eyeballs in this.
- 4:15If you have, if you have a weirdness about that, that's not going to help.
- 4:19But yeah, I would say I had a good time.
- 4:22As me who loves slashers, it was a jolly good time.
- 4:25So what about yourself?
- 4:27Leah raises a good point.
- 4:28Before I get to my feelings.
- 4:29There is a lot of graphic violence in this one.
- 4:32Some splatter gore and the like.
- 4:33I mean, it's a slasher, but like some people can handle a little bit.
- 4:36This goes a little beyond in some ways.
- 4:38There's also way more nudity than you would expect.
- 4:41Well, not really from this time period, but like if you're not looking, knowing it's going to be in there, you're going to be shocked by it.
- 4:48Like, I knew what I was getting into, but other people aren't.
- 4:51So as much as I watched that.
- 4:52First scene with that girl, it's this, oh my gosh, this one girl, he is really underplaying the nudity because she is nude for a solid like 15 minutes.
- 5:03It's long.
- 5:04It's long.
- 5:05And when I was watching it, I was just like, oh my God, what is Christian gonna say about this?
- 5:09Like, but because this was like, there's nudity and then there's like gratuitous nudity and then there is this girl running around for 15 minutes.
- 5:18But that's how I felt because the Ring episode I did with John and Evan, the made for TV movie in Japan, which came out before the, the first film, Japanese movie, has nudity in it.
- 5:30And I'm like, yeah, I am in a high school right now watching this.
- 5:34I really hope there's nobody behind me.
- 5:36Oh no.
- 5:37Yeah, this would, if you were watching this not at home, you would be like, if you were rushing on an airplane, you would, you would feel uncomfortable.
- 5:45There would be feelings.
- 5:47So all I have to say, as someone who Watched the first film first in the 80s.
- 5:51I wasn't alive then, but I watched the first film first.
- 5:55I am a bit let down ultimately.
- 5:57But you know, if I was wearing 3D glasses, man, some of the scenes would have been so sick.
- 6:02Would probably be my first reaction.
- 6:04They true.
- 6:04When that tree.
- 6:05When the tree limb went through the windshield, I was like, wow, that would have looked really cool in 3D.
- 6:11But I just don't.
- 6:12Can you just like get 3D glasses and just like.
- 6:15I guess you can.
- 6:16And just watch 3D movies help my millennial heart here.
- 6:21I don't know.
- 6:22Surely they have to.
- 6:23Yeah.
- 6:24I've never looked into it.
- 6:25Meaning clearly.
- 6:27Me neither.
- 6:27But some of the scenes would have looked really neat.
- 6:30I agree.
- 6:30If you can see it in 3D, I would see it for that.
- 6:34So you said, you said you were disappointed with the remake then.
- 6:37Yes.
- 6:37Changes made.
- 6:38Like ultimately I get why to just distinguish things from the original.
- 6:42You're not doing a shot for shot.
- 6:43Like you're making it your own thing.
- 6:45But it's.
- 6:46I don't care for the reveal as much on the second one compared to the first one.
- 6:50Yeah, but we'll get there in a bit.
- 6:52Okay.
- 6:53So this of course is My Bloody Valentine.
- 6:56The original from the 80s or 3D.
- 6:59Can you help me like introduce what this movie.
- 7:01These movies are like synopses for both.
- 7:03We can work off of each other here.
- 7:05Yeah, absolutely.
- 7:06So this.
- 7:08Well, either one really.
- 7:10It's the town of Spoilers.
- 7:11Sorry?
- 7:12Oh yeah, spoilers.
- 7:13I mean, come on.
- 7:15The town of Harmony, I think is the name and it.
- 7:18There you go.
- 7:19See, I just watched these locations.
- 7:20These people have names.
- 7:21Sure, if you say so.
- 7:23The names, the names of the people.
- 7:24I'm worse up but I think having watched them both, I think I can.
- 7:29So there's a.
- 7:29There's this mining town and the mining thing is big.
- 7:33You just.
- 7:34That's that if this film had a personality, it would be mining.
- 7:39So these are mining towns presumably somewhere in Canada and somewhere in the States.
- 7:46But they are kind of like an every mining town.
- 7:48Like essentially it's pretty like everyone knows everybody.
- 7:53It's a very poor working class sort of community.
- 7:58Nobody really gets out, it seems like.
- 8:01And the mine is really the heart and the soul of the town.
- 8:05And we've seen these towns that exist in our world.
- 8:08And I think that's kind of what it is.
- 8:10The bars there, it's like the same five people that go, you know.
- 8:13And everybody knows everybody's business.
- 8:15And on Valen.
- 8:17Well was the initial sort of catastrophe on Valentine's Day.
- 8:21Is that what caused it to be.
- 8:23That the day 20 years ago?
- 8:25I think in both films.
- 8:26Okay, yes.
- 8:27On Valentine's Day.
- 8:29On Valentine's Day, there is this catastrophe.
- 8:32They do, I think, have different explanations, don't they, in the two?
- 8:37Yeah.
- 8:37One is the original.
- 8:39It's a methane explosion, I think.
- 8:42Yeah.
- 8:43Or.
- 8:44Well, actually, they both may be methane explosions.
- 8:46One is it was just an accident.
- 8:47The other in the remake, I think it's them leaving the people in charge who should have been looking for this.
- 8:53And that's why there's some resentment.
- 8:55I am mixing these two films.
- 8:56So if I get something wrong or we get something wrong, it's just deal with it.
- 8:59It's My bloody Valentine.
- 9:00It's not like.
- 9:01I mean, what you need to know was there was an explosion.
- 9:04People died.
- 9:05It's a small town.
- 9:06There's a lot of resentment.
- 9:08One guy ends up surviving Tom, and Tom goes into a coma.
- 9:16And then presumably come.
- 9:19I mean, he comes back and he starts killing people.
- 9:23And kids go drinking in the mines, because that's apparently what you do in this town.
- 9:30And actually, probably one of the most believable aspects of movie is that they would go drinking in the mines.
- 9:36He starts killing people in both.
- 9:39And then it come.
- 9:41Well, I guess this is a spoiler, but it comes to find out that Tom has.
- 9:46Has died at some stage and that there is a new person who has taken up the mantle.
- 9:52And much like our.
- 9:54Our similar movies like Scream and some of these other slasher flicks that are actual humans and not like ghosties like Freddy or Jason, one of.
- 10:06It's.
- 10:07It's one of them.
- 10:08And there's all these red herrings and who is it?
- 10:11And you know, oh, my gosh, why is this guy so sinister looking?
- 10:15And eventually it gets the big reveal and you have yourself a final girl.
- 10:21Pretty formidable one, I would say, in both.
- 10:23Except they.
- 10:25The last one needs to learn how to shoot a gun.
- 10:27You.
- 10:28I mean, they're in.
- 10:29They're in a mining town.
- 10:31She should.
- 10:31She should know.
- 10:32They all know how.
- 10:33They all know how, right?
- 10:34Yeah.
- 10:35Like, they're drinking in mines and they could probably shoot a pistol.
- 10:39Okay.
- 10:39Like, I'm just gonna go ahead and take a wild guess.
- 10:42This isn't some hippie dippy girl from San Francisco.
- 10:44No.
- 10:45Who's never held a gun or seen a gun before in her life.
- 10:48She's been raised around it.
- 10:49Like, come on.
- 10:50She.
- 10:50Yeah, she's just like.
- 10:51Anyway, she was like a stormtrooper out there, but so Anyway, so.
- 10:58And then that's kind of it.
- 11:00The.
- 11:00There's a lot of ambiguity because they clearly want to make 45 million different sequels to this.
- 11:06And the good thing about the films like Bloody Valentine and films like Scream or I know what you did last summer is that they can kind of keep going, you know, because there's.
- 11:17The story can continue and.
- 11:18And so.
- 11:19And I'm sure we'll get another one, although it's been a minute, so we'll see.
- 11:22So big differences here as far as reveals goes.
- 11:25In the original film, we have the main love interest.
- 11:30It's kind of a Betty Veronica situation with this one girl and two guys.
- 11:34They have names, I'm sure.
- 11:36And Sarah, I think.
- 11:38Sure.
- 11:40Her main squeeze at the beginning turns out to be the actual killer because he watched his dad.
- 11:44Axel.
- 11:45Thank you.
- 11:45Watched his dad be killed because he was one of the negligent people that.
- 11:49The guy who was in the mine came back, went a little crazy.
- 11:53Little bit of cannibalism on the side, killed his dad in front of him.
- 11:57And that imprinted on him, like, the psychological trauma.
- 12:00So he decided to relive it by doing this.
- 12:02When the town started to celebrate Valentine's Day again, which is a huge thing.
- 12:06It's like the original killer.
- 12:07Never do this again because I'll rip out your heart.
- 12:10Shoot, My heart's been taken from me.
- 12:11All that jazz.
- 12:12There's a lot of hearts and hearts.
- 12:14Yes.
- 12:15The 3D Dean Winchester is.
- 12:18I was gonna say.
- 12:19I just kept calling him Dean the whole time because he just.
- 12:22That's all I can see.
- 12:23Well, he has this.
- 12:24He's wearing the jacket still, and he has the same.
- 12:26Like, the four faces that he makes on Supernatural.
- 12:30And I just was like, all right, Dean, what you doing?
- 12:33If you told me he just walked off of set with the same clothes he wore in the show, I'd believe you.
- 12:37Yeah.
- 12:37He filmed a West Virginia thing for Supernatural and just walked off Jared with Jared and just was like, I'm here.
- 12:44I am.
- 12:45Yeah.
- 12:45But they.
- 12:46They changed for the American film.
- 12:47Is that it's his dad who was one of the miners who killed the people there when the accident happened so he could survive and feed off of them.
- 12:56And his dad was the one who killed all these people originally 20 years ago.
- 12:59Was then taken to a mental institution.
- 13:01He, too, himself was.
- 13:03And the reveal is, you know, he's been treated poorly by the town ever since.
- 13:06Could say, oh, you're just like your daddy.
- 13:08And the big thing is that we learned that he is suffering from Did Dissociative identity disorder.
- 13:13And he has been the killer the whole time and gets away at the end after it looks like he dies.
- 13:19Yeah.
- 13:20And it's very, very akin to like, if you've seen I Know, I Know what yout Did Last Summer, you do have the original person.
- 13:27It's kind of like the big baddie, but then it just becomes a thing throughout the movies where everyone's like, oh, it's the big baddies back again.
- 13:35When actually it's like your next door neighbor.
- 13:38And that's kind of what's happening in these films.
- 13:40How were you introduced to these films?
- 13:43That is a great question.
- 13:45And honestly, I think these were.
- 13:49I went through a phase when I was in Scotland, when I was doing my PhD where it's called a little strange phenomenon called procrastination.
- 13:59And essentially I decided that I needed to watch every, like, slasher film that's ever been.
- 14:05So I was watching like, Urban Legends and like this one.
- 14:09And I think it just got in that group of, of ones that like, I hadn't seen in the 90s, which it wasn't out.
- 14:16Well, it was out.
- 14:17It was out in the 80s, so.
- 14:18But I'd seen.
- 14:19I hadn't seen it.
- 14:20So the new one's not 80s, but.
- 14:24And I just wanted to checkbox that list because I'm going to tell you when you're procrastinating hard, you'll do just about anything tonight.
- 14:31So I decided my new goal was to watch a bunch of slasher films.
- 14:35And so I did.
- 14:36So I'm pretty sure this was in the midst of that.
- 14:38And, you know, I love the 80s aesthetic.
- 14:41Like, 1984 was one of my favorite seasons of American Horror Story.
- 14:44And it's all about the tropes from these 80s slasher films.
- 14:48And there's something to me inherently not super.
- 14:53It's so out of time when you watch the real 80s films that I don't feel as scared about them, you know, And I.
- 15:01I kind of like that if I'm by myself.
- 15:05So that's how I got introduced.
- 15:07What about you?
- 15:08I saw the first film either in college or right after college because kind of similar thing, not doing my work because I am a great learner, but a terrible student.
- 15:20If I care about it, I'm a boy if I don't.
- 15:23Sorry, I'll give you the stuff, but I'm not a good scooter.
- 15:28But yeah, I saw the original film.
- 15:30I also, I knew the remake existed around the time I was graduating high school, but that was when I was in my era of just becoming a horror fan because I had started off like so scared of everything
- 15:41and I couldn't watch a thing and just like would hide and like, not even like horror movies.
- 15:45Like when dinosaurs would show up in Jurassic Park, I'd be like, nope, I'm done.
- 15:49And leaving the room.
- 15:51That's a horror in itself.
- 15:52We just didn't know that's true.
- 15:54There are horror elements in Jurassic Park.
- 15:56I wouldn't consider it a horror film, but like they're, they're there.
- 15:59So that.
- 15:59Growing out of that phase.
- 16:01Yeah, I watch them and like, okay, I appreciate these for what they are about, what we do love and what we don't love about each of these movies.
- 16:10Yeah.
- 16:10If we're talking the 1980.
- 16:13Is it 81?
- 16:14I think one.
- 16:16Yeah.
- 16:16I just, again, I love the whole 80s.
- 16:20I could make an 80s film in about, if given a budget in about 20 minutes.
- 16:26Like, I could do the script, I could do the clothes.
- 16:29Like there's something, you know how a lot of people watch procedurals and they'll just rewatch them and.
- 16:35Because it's comforting to me sometimes 80s slasher flicks are comforting because you just know like that the drops when things are going to happen, you kind of know what's the rhythm and what's going to happen.
- 16:46And so for me, I really like.
- 16:49Like I said, I love 80s slasher.
- 16:50So I really liked that first one for that.
- 16:53What I didn't like is probably that I got bored sometimes watching it and that it wasn't like super gripping, I would say, in that way.
- 17:07I was watching it last night while I was just like eating and doing other things.
- 17:11And I feel like that's probably the right space for it.
- 17:14You know, it's not a real mind bender in that way.
- 17:19In terms of the, the new one, 2009, I think maybe the 3D one I liked, I liked the twist because I will say there is a twist at the end and the twist being that you think it's kind
- 17:36of a one for one and it's not a one for one one, which I did like because I was already sort of accepting that this guy was going to be the.
- 17:44The killer and he wasn't.
- 17:47So I did like that because at least it was an element of surprise to something that I thought was just a remake, you know, of the original.
- 17:54What I didn't like, I.
- 17:57I could have done without all.
- 18:00It's hard to say because I say I love slashers, but it was a lot of head trauma.
- 18:07Yes, to the point where I was like, can.
- 18:09And it's not that I don't think you.
- 18:11You can kill people, but he could have killed them in different places maybe.
- 18:16Like, I feel like I've seen every which way ahead.
- 18:19Can have a pickaxe go through this thing.
- 18:23And at some point I was like, yeah, it was.
- 18:25Yeah, that's a good way to put it, actually, is like, you know, Leah's not saying that slasher films can't have slashing.
- 18:32It's just, you know, it was some of the.
- 18:35The quote, quick kills or whatever.
- 18:37You were just like, all right, where's he gonna stab you through the.
- 18:41Around a corner, Stab you through the head?
- 18:43You know, there it was.
- 18:44It was a little samey in terms of the approach.
- 18:46And you're in a mind, like, you could get really creative with that.
- 18:49I feel like.
- 18:50I think.
- 18:51I think for me, some, it wasn't as jump scary as I wanted because of that in that second film.
- 18:56And I feel like they had an opportunity there to really, like.
- 18:59I mean, they had the budget for it in 3D, like, put him on a ceiling or something, have him drop down.
- 19:06You know, if the alien can do it, he can do it.
- 19:08So I sort of knew he was just going to be around a corner banging out some lights and stabbing you through the eyeball.
- 19:15Yeah, yeah, I'll say.
- 19:16I'll parrot some of what you said earlier as well.
- 19:19Like the original film, the slice of life stuff kind of drags on too long in certain segments of the film.
- 19:24I think they just needed one time.
- 19:26I would have preferred some more kills there, but as far as the original film, I appreciate the mystery of it.
- 19:34There are red herrings in both films, but I think the red herrings work a little bit better.
- 19:38If you like the reveal in the second one, I think they work better for you.
- 19:42If you don't like the reveal, I don't think they work well.
- 19:44And that's my opinion on that one.
- 19:45But of who the killer could be.
- 19:48Because obviously your big one is setting up the guy who did it before.
- 19:50Well, obviously he came back, which would be like, I know what you did last summer kind of moment to an extent, obviously before that was made.
- 19:58And as well, like, yeah, it's definitely.
- 20:00It's of the times.
- 20:01Both films are of their times in different ways.
- 20:03Both films.
- 20:04That was some early 2000s stuff happening.
- 20:08Yes.
- 20:09So everything is going to be set.
- 20:12Even though the year could be a different year.
- 20:14It's going to be set, really, when it's made, it's Just how things are made.
- 20:18Yeah, I mean, that's going to put.
- 20:20Those influences in them.
- 20:21That's not a bad thing inherently.
- 20:23But it can be a bit much when you can like, okay, I am reliving this year, watching this movie or experiencing what it would have been like if I'd been alive then.
- 20:32Yeah, I'll agree with you as well.
- 20:33Like the kills, they're like over the top gory, which, that's not my thing.
- 20:39I like a gory kill every now and then, but like, not when it's like excessive or when you're repeating the same thing over and over again.
- 20:44Making it very same, like diversify.
- 20:48I could have done without, like you said, the 15 minutes of the, of the nudity.
- 20:53It was so long.
- 20:56I hope she got paid very well for that, which I doubt.
- 20:59But.
- 20:59Yeah, also doubt.
- 21:02Psych.
- 21:02Okay.
- 21:03She was going like.
- 21:05And.
- 21:05And you're talking to someone who, who has those parts.
- 21:08But I just wanted to like put a sheet over and be like, girl, you about to die.
- 21:13Just put it.
- 21:13Yeah, like, grab that, grab that dirty.
- 21:17Comforter and some dignity before you die.
- 21:20Right.
- 21:20She gave it a go, though.
- 21:21I'll give her credit.
- 21:22She gave it a go.
- 21:23She did what she could.
- 21:24It's not her fault he took off.
- 21:25The mattress or that she ran in the back.
- 21:28It's one of the rules.
- 21:29They should be running.
- 21:30Why are they running up the stairs when they should be running out the front door?
- 21:33Why did she run in the back room when you could be running in the woods?
- 21:38I would take the woods over the.
- 21:40The door.
- 21:41We needed there to die, I guess.
- 21:42Yeah.
- 21:42I mean, her nudity.
- 21:45Her nudity budget was only 15.
- 21:50They couldn't keep her going.
- 21:51Specifically in her contract.
- 21:52She couldn't be in the rest of the film.
- 21:54No, that was her time to shine.
- 21:58All right.
- 21:59So one thing these films do have to say, like if we're going to pick on, not pick on, pick up on deeper themes here in each of them.
- 22:07Yeah.
- 22:07They're not the deepest films ever, but there is something in them.
- 22:09I would say they do have something to say about generational trauma.
- 22:11Like, what do you think about that?
- 22:13I do.
- 22:14I actually think watching.
- 22:15They really are heavy handed with it in the second one.
- 22:17I think in relation to Gen.
- 22:20I mean, there's a lot of things, as we just mentioned, that they're heavy handed with.
- 22:23But also I think the generational trauma is certainly there.
- 22:27I think there's a lot actually in these films upon rewatching about poverty, mental health and again, generational Trauma.
- 22:35I'm currently taking a course in counseling actually.
- 22:38And one of the worst areas for.
- 22:45I think it was depression, untreated, I should say.
- 22:49Depression is in West Virginia actually is in these kind of mining towns.
- 22:53And it's, it's like a mixture of things because it's like it is poverty, it is like the, the health care is not access as accessible, but it's also this idea, the stick.
- 23:04That's exactly right, Christian.
- 23:05The stigma of mental health and how people see it as like, you know, we're tough, we don't need to do it.
- 23:12So I feel like all of those sort of themes you see in both of these films, which is that, yeah, I mean there is a lot of trauma that happens from these close knit communities when these deaths occur.
- 23:27But then there's also like the subsequent things that happen later which are, you know, none of it really gets talked about or dealt with.
- 23:36Everybody just wants to fight people when they come into town.
- 23:39And.
- 23:40But I mean, you know, and that's the thing is that it's just not.
- 23:43And honestly I think it.
- 23:46The one person who does it seems get treatment for it, interestingly, is a villain.
- 23:52Yes.
- 23:53And I find that to be quite an interesting turn in that.
- 23:58So, yeah, in the original film, of course, we get our main killer, let's just say Axel, watching the death of his father from the original killer and then that kind of imprinting on him as a young, on a
- 24:08young age.
- 24:09It's like, oh, I lost my dad because of this madness.
- 24:12Now everyone's going to look down on me.
- 24:13I was already going to have to probably work in the mines anyways.
- 24:16And now without a breadwinner in the house, it's going to be even worse along the way as it gets into adulthood.
- 24:22And then the whole thing of we're going to force this upon you, I get it.
- 24:26Breaking mentally seeing that happen.
- 24:28And then people wanted to celebrate the day where you lost everything.
- 24:31Literally.
- 24:32I might snap too.
- 24:33I get it.
- 24:34Yeah.
- 24:34And you see that it's a very common.
- 24:37You would think, you know, they don't go so deep as talking about these sort of generational things.
- 24:42But you see it if you think about Halloween, you know Halloween, you see the little baby Michael Myers with the knife in the costume, the clown costume in the front yard.
- 24:54And you see it with Friday the 13th, you know, Jason doesn't like it when you drink and have sex and do all the quote, sinful things because that's when he drowned.
- 25:04And you know, all this sort of mommy died.
- 25:06That's where mommy died, you know, there's mommy issues.
- 25:09God, if any villain has had mommy issues, it's.
- 25:13It's the old Jason.
- 25:15But it's an interesting thing that, yeah, it's seems to some of these horror films, they want you to have a motivation for what you do.
- 25:23And I guess it does make it a little more grounded and interesting to have someone have something happen, you know, that makes them become.
- 25:31And I wonder if that speaks to humanity in a way as we don't like the idea that there's just killers that are, you know, psychopathy they don't appreciate.
- 25:40They need some sort of generational stuff to make it more believable or to make it less scary because the idea.
- 25:48Of they just are that way.
- 25:49That's.
- 25:50Yeah, that's how they develop.
- 25:51Nature, nurture.
- 25:52Maybe they had something to play, but maybe they were just born that way.
- 25:55And I think that's scarier to me because like I'll watch a dateline and if you're like, oh, like they had X, Y and Z reason it was very stupid.
- 26:04But then they just killed a whole bunch of people.
- 26:05But you know who get.
- 26:06Who really gets me are these people, like these serial killers who just are like, well, I woke up one day and.
- 26:12And bye.
- 26:15You know, it's almost like there's nothing triggered it.
- 26:18It's almost like if you have some sort of starting point, you can somehow contain it or figure it out, you know, whereas like the Ted Bundy's of the world, you just.
- 26:27There's nothing.
- 26:28I mean, he says reasons, but come.
- 26:30On, believe about half of what he says.
- 26:32And I think that's still too much.
- 26:34Probably he's manipulative psychopaths.
- 26:37But I think that's one of my biggest problems with the remake is that the generational trauma thing is still a thing there.
- 26:43He witnesses his dad dying.
- 26:46Same too.
- 26:46But he's also the son of the killer in the remake, Right?
- 26:49I'm not getting that wrong.
- 26:51He is the.
- 26:53No, you mean in the new one.
- 26:56In the new one, yeah.
- 26:57No, he is not the son he's.
- 27:00Because his dad must be misremembering his dad own the mind.
- 27:02Is that the same?
- 27:03I can't remember.
- 27:05I don't think the whole thing is like, you're going to turn out just like him.
- 27:07I want to say he's his son, but like, maybe.
- 27:10So then, yeah, I don't remember this movie because.
- 27:12Because that would be my reason why I don't like this one as much if I read that film correctly.
- 27:16And maybe I Wasn't paying as much attention as I should.
- 27:19I can always say I'm wrong.
- 27:20There's a lot of related people in this film.
- 27:22So you need, you might need a like flowchart if you want to get.
- 27:26But.
- 27:27But that if he is indeed his son, the whole town hates him because of the fact that he is the son of the man.
- 27:32If that's what's happening.
- 27:33And then at the end it's proven he is the killer.
- 27:36It's like, oh, well, that's it.
- 27:38Like it.
- 27:38They were right to hate him.
- 27:41I kind of have issues with that.
- 27:42Well, I mean, I think what they did is they had all of these red herrings like throughout that second film.
- 27:48And I think they left it down to just two people because everyone else was dead by the end, you know, pretty much.
- 27:58And I think, yeah, they could have made it a little more.
- 28:03Maybe have like three or four that were still alive that it could be.
- 28:06And maybe just, you know.
- 28:07Because I will say at the end though, you didn't really know out of the two people.
- 28:11Like, you know, you knew what happened in the previous film, but you didn't know if it was going to get repeated.
- 28:17And they did a lot of stuff with the actors so that you thought they were just all crazy.
- 28:23I wanted to get that actress, Sarah.
- 28:26I wanted to be like, just shoot them both.
- 28:29I would.
- 28:29As soon as he said shoot us both, I was like done and done.
- 28:34Which I actually give them credit for that.
- 28:36With the ending that they have, even though I don't like it.
- 28:38That's actually some good foreshadowing that you expect the good person to say that.
- 28:42So if he's actually the killer.
- 28:44Hold on there.
- 28:44That's messing with my perception of things.
- 28:46But no, if you're feeding him with the twist they haven't planned, that makes sense.
- 28:49So I do kind of like it.
- 28:51Even in the not liking of what happens after that.
- 28:53Oh, he is legitimate.
- 28:55Like he is a good guy.
- 28:56The good guy would say that because, well, it's better for me to die and him to die.
- 29:00Therefore you're not in trouble anymore.
- 29:01Even though you're going to take me away from you.
- 29:03Right.
- 29:03And keeping in mind that, you know, your girl grew up in Georgia, she can shoot a gun, but like just shoot them in incapacitate.
- 29:13You don't have to blow their faces off.
- 29:15Like, I get that this is your dad, the, you know, your kid's dad, like, and your old fling.
- 29:23Sure.
- 29:24Give them a real big leg shot and hope for the best.
- 29:29At least you can I just.
- 29:30I was like, yelling at the screen.
- 29:32I was like, just shoot him.
- 29:34He said, do it.
- 29:35Do it.
- 29:35Like we were doing like the Spider man meme over here, just waiting for something to, like, happen.
- 29:41And it did.
- 29:42To just go to a rating.
- 29:44Reviewing, like, out of 10.
- 29:45What do you think of both of these?
- 29:47I am again, super biased about the first one.
- 29:51I would give it in.
- 29:52In my horror world, I would probably give it like a 6 out of 10.
- 29:56Like it's something that I would.
- 29:58I would watch it again and it's very comforting.
- 30:01The new one, it's probably gonna fall into like a 4 out of 5 out of 10 for me.
- 30:09Didn't quite hit those nostalgia buttons.
- 30:12Better made.
- 30:13Better made film because it's like 20 years later, but like, it's.
- 30:17It's still gonna fall into that world for me.
- 30:19And that ties into the question Wal was asking at the end of the is, which is superior?
- 30:23I guess with ratings, we're kind of giving that away, but, like.
- 30:25Yeah, I'm with you there.
- 30:27I think I'd give the First 1A 7.5 out of 10.
- 30:30It's not reinventing the wheel.
- 30:32It's not the greatest film ever.
- 30:34There are some parts that are a little.
- 30:35That carry on a little too long.
- 30:36There's a nice mystery in there.
- 30:38Some good kills, if that's what you're looking for in a slasher film.
- 30:40Can't go wrong.
- 30:41The remake.
- 30:42I am also giving it a four as well.
- 30:45Because I'm not.
- 30:45I don't jive with the ending.
- 30:47There are parts beforehand that are really cool.
- 30:49The same.
- 30:49He kills kind of like I lose interest.
- 30:51But if I was wearing 3D glasses, I might raise it to a five.
- 30:54Oh, that's.
- 30:55We're gonna have to do some deep investment some.
- 30:58The 3D world.
- 31:00Yeah, I mean, I think.
- 31:03Oh, and is that part of it is you have to pick what you think did better?
- 31:06I mean, I think yes.
- 31:07I think the Canadians killed it.
- 31:09Good job, Canadians.
- 31:11Don't be mad at us.
- 31:12We're trying.
- 31:15We're just jealous.
