- 0:00OK thank you Nileshian. It's been a hectic 3 weeks for
- 0:04Peterborough Shop put to Lawson Capes after the outdoor season
- 0:08opener in Loughborough in May. He was in action at the 50th
- 0:12anniversary throws event in Germany.
- 0:15In a world class field, Lawson was ranked #2 and through 18.03
- 0:21metres to gain 4th place, missing the podium by just five
- 0:25centimetres. Next it was back to Loughborough
- 0:28for the Pickering Memorial International and this time a
- 0:31throw of 18 metres and 40 meant he topped the table.
- 0:36Peterborough Town Cricket Club fourths are celebrating after
- 0:39claiming their first ever victory last weekend.
- 0:42For the first time in the club's long history, they are fielding
- 0:46four Saturday teams. The fourths are playing in the
- 0:49Hunts League Division Four and they have claimed that first
- 0:52victory by beating Wesley's seconds by 57 runs.
- 0:57Teenager Oliver Drake, who's just 14, top scored with 52 as
- 1:01Town made 179 for eight with 13 year old Theo Walton making an
- 1:07unbeaten 35. Wesley were then all out for 122
- 1:13with the highlight being the bowling of another 14 year old.
- 1:17Ashraf Pashala claim 2 for 20 in his eight hovers while Dilip
- 1:22Bardawaji took three for 22. There were also brilliant
- 1:27matches for 14 year old Alfred Bradbury.
- 1:31Elsewhere at the club, the 1st 11 cemented their position at
- 1:34the top of the Northants Premier with A7 wicket win at Stony
- 1:37Stratford. But the Seconds lost a tight
- 1:40game at home to Weekly and walked in and the thirds also
- 1:44went down at Warrington by 49 runs.
- 1:47News from the club this week that Peterborough Town Cricket

- 2:28defending their title they won two years ago in Georgia.
- 2:33Transfer News and Peterborough Sports have announced their
- 2:35first new signing. 24 year old Sam Mcclintock has played for a
- 2:40host of other non league clubs before signing for Sports from
- 2:44Kettering last week. And more good news from the club
- 2:47is that stalwart Mark Jones has also signed for Sports, which
- 2:52will be his 10th season with the City.
- 2:54Club fans will be pleased that with that news and the popular
- 2:58centre forward will be on the show on the 8th of August when

- 4:59You're listening to PCR sports. Good evening and welcome back to
- 5:12the PCR Sports Show here on PCRFM for the start of your
- 5:16sporting weekend. I'm Neil Esch and this week's
- 5:19show is all about the Great Eastern Run, which is just 128
- 5:24days away. Now that might seem a long time,
- 5:26but I'm sure it doesn't for Aaron Morrell, for example,
- 5:29who's from Good Running Events and organiser of the Great
- 5:33Eastern Run. Aaron 128 days to go.
- 5:36It is. I've got to make you're one step
- 5:38ahead of me on that exact countdown there, Neilid.
- 5:41But good evening, good to be with you.
- 5:42Yeah, good to have you back on the show as well.
- 5:45How we looking, You know, great to be back on the on the
- 5:47calendar again, have the Great Eastern Run, the half marathon
- 5:50and we'll come on to speaking to Carol Hughes about the Annas
- 5:53Hope 5K Fun Run very shortly. But from 1/2 marathon
- 5:56perspective, just over four months, things must be ramping
- 6:00up. Yep.
- 6:00Absolutely. Planning is well underway.
- 6:02I've got got remit. It feels a little bit closer
- 6:04now. You said it's exactly 128 days
- 6:07away, but yeah, really looking forward to it.
- 6:09Obviously, be back in to be what our fourth year of the Great
- 6:13Eastern this year under good running events.
- 6:15So yeah, really looking forward to the APG Great Eastern Run
- 6:18this year. Brilliant stuff and we know it's
- 6:20a citywide event. But not just citywide, but we're
- 6:23talking regionally here, aren't we?
- 6:25As well, with people coming from far afield to take part in
- 6:28probably one of the flattest half marathons in the country.
- 6:31It is fantastic opportunity to get really good times.
- 6:34As you say, people travel from all over the country, runners,
- 6:38the families, volunteers to be able to come and support this
- 6:41fantastic event. So yeah, fantastic to be back,
- 6:44great to be on the calendar again, and I'm really, really
- 6:46looking forward to October. Brilliant stuff, right?
- 6:49Let's bring Carol Hughes in. She's from Anna's Hope charity
- 6:53partner for the 5K Fun run. And Carol, what does the 5K mean
- 7:00to you? We'll come onto Anna's hope
- 7:03shortly. And the charity itself, but the
- 7:055K Fun Run which takes place in October.
- 7:07You've been the charity partner for a number of years now.
- 7:10What does it mean to you and the charity?
- 7:12Good evening. Thank you for inviting me.
- 7:14It means an awful lot to me personally.
- 7:17I've been involved with it for 19 years.
- 7:20It's an idea that I took to the council many years ago and I'm
- 7:23very passionate about keeping people fit and, you know,
- 7:27joining in bringing the live, the whole city and it's a buzz
- 7:31and yeah, I really look forward to the day.
- 7:34Most of you probably know by now I dress as a fairy, although I
- 7:37feel underdressed tonight and we're all over the race.
- 7:41I just want to have fun and, you know, people to enjoy
- 7:44themselves. It's a great opportunity for
- 7:45lots of charities to come along and to raise their profile and
- 7:49to raise funds, much needed funds.
- 7:52Obviously I'd love you to run for us, but I'm just passionate
- 7:54about, you know, the whole run, not just the Anna's Hope 5K, but
- 7:59the half marathon as well. And it's just awesome.
- 8:02It's quite a legacy you've built there, isn't it?
- 8:0419 years. I hope you feel proud of that
- 8:08and the impact that Anna's Hope as a charity has had.
- 8:12Yeah, we're just a very small charity, but doing the work of a
- 8:15national one, and we've put the first specialist rehabilitation
- 8:18service into the country for any child that's looking out to
- 8:21survive. And we're looking after hundreds
- 8:23of children in this region alone, and nothing's too much
- 8:27trouble. Yeah, it's a huge legacy for.
- 8:32Him it certainly is. So, as much as you feel
- 8:35comfortable, if you'd like to tell us about Anna herself and
- 8:38how the charity became to be formed.
- 8:40Yeah, Anna was our little girl that we tragically lost when she
- 8:45was just three years old. This is 19 years ago now.
- 8:50She was touched by a brain tumour.
- 8:52We hoped and prayed that she'd be one of the lucky ones to
- 8:55survive, but tragically she wasn't.
- 8:58And my husband and I decided whether Anna lived or she died,
- 9:01we're going to have to do something.
- 9:04Because until Anna's hope came along, there was no dedicated
- 9:07rehabilitation service at all. And you know, as I say,
- 9:11nothing's too much trouble. And when Anna came round from
- 9:13her 8 1/2 hour operation, not only did she still have her
- 9:17brain tumour which had been resected, she then couldn't
- 9:20swallow. And there was nobody in
- 9:21Addenbrooke's that could help her, either in the adult section
- 9:23or the children's one. And that was it.
- 9:25I became a mummy on a mission. And yeah, you've certainly,
- 9:30you've done her legacy proud. And the Fun Run, which takes
- 9:35place at the Great Eastern Run itself, is an opportunity for
- 9:40you to raise the profile of Anna's Hope as a charity, but
- 9:43also bring people out and just get them partaking in a in an
- 9:48activity that gets them moving, you know, from a 5K perspective.
- 9:51Well, I first met Aaron. I was saying about them running
- 9:54and walking and that and Aaron looked at me and I said, Aaron,
- 9:57the first thing of running is walking and, and, and that's
- 10:01true to form. And we, we have 4 year olds
- 10:03doing it, but also I've had a 90 year old man doing it as well.
- 10:06They just want to take part. The atmosphere is electric and
- 10:10they just want to take part and do the best they can.
- 10:12And they all get obviously get chip pinned so they know how
- 10:15fast or slow they go. And with Anna's hope they the
- 10:19fairies are waiting for them at the end, not.
- 10:21For getting the cakes. So you jump in there, There's
- 10:23always cakes, yeah. That's it.
- 10:25The fairy cakes are waiting, but also the public love.
- 10:29The last couple of years the fairies have actually given the
- 10:33medals out, haven't they? And they've actually thoroughly
- 10:35enjoyed that. They've enjoyed actually giving
- 10:38them, but also the public have enjoyed it as well.
- 10:42But yeah, it's just an awesome day.
- 10:43And as if, please do think about, you know, coming together
- 10:47and doesn't matter if you can't run, as I say, you can walk it
- 10:50and you'll find that you're pulled along.
- 10:52And a lot of the public actually have Fiji Jelly babies on the
- 10:55way. And as I say, we're going
- 10:58through the streets of Peterborough and through the
- 11:00cathedral. And yeah, it's a it's a
- 11:02wonderful day. Aaron, just to bring you back in
- 11:05there, the half marathon has always been talked about, but
- 11:08having a 5K fun run as part of the event itself just makes it a
- 11:13lot more inclusive, doesn't it, And allows people to progress
- 11:16from a 5K up to 1/2 marathon following year?
- 11:19It does as you say, it really does make it inclusive because
- 11:22you know all all the way from the, you know, the four or five
- 11:24year old little ones or, or all the way through the ages or the
- 11:27way through the abilities. It's not just that, you know,
- 11:31you say the teenagers and, and you know, people in their 20s
- 11:34and 30s that are running their first 5K.
- 11:36It's the ones that then want to progress on and maybe, OK, other
- 11:38than the 5K this year, but I'll look at perhaps maybe doing a, a
- 11:4110K or a half marathon the following year or the year after
- 11:44that. So yeah, for the fun run
- 11:46obviously to to begin with starts at 9:00 in the morning
- 11:49and and then we have the half marathon at 10:30.
- 11:53Carol. Yeah, I was just going to say
- 11:54there that it does the song that you had played at the beginning.
- 11:58What have you done today to feel proud?
- 12:00I do feel proud because I'm now witnessing, after 19 years of
- 12:04being involved with the Annas Hope 5K Fun Run, that I am
- 12:08witnessing people graduating from the 5K.
- 12:12And yeah, I am proud that I've managed to persuade them.
- 12:18And I've certainly seen it over the years as well from that
- 12:21progress of people who are taking part in Couch to 5K
- 12:25activities. And we've highlighted that on
- 12:26this show over the years. They're then using the 5K Fun
- 12:30Run as an opportunity to actually raise some funds for a
- 12:34'cause that's close to them. But then also then the following
- 12:37year, as Aaron says, they might take part in a 10K, perhaps in
- 12:40around the springtime summer, and then progress a few months
- 12:44later into that half marathon. And that just makes it a
- 12:47completely inclusive event that allows you to take part, whether
- 12:51it be from a 5K all the way up to 1/2 marathon within the space
- 12:54of a year. Yeah, and as, as we say, the
- 12:57Great Eastern Run isn't isn't any old run.
- 13:00It's a very special run and you know, encompasses all the whole
- 13:03of the East of England. And people travel for far and
- 13:05wide with Anna's Hope. We have the Anna's Hope schools
- 13:09challenge and I'm already going to schools signing up and saying
- 13:12where are you? What's?
- 13:14Happening. And so they're eager to do it as
- 13:16well. And it's a good it's a good time
- 13:18for them to achieve a personal best.
- 13:20Certainly is, and we'll certainly come on to that as
- 13:23well in terms of how people can get involved in the 5K or the
- 13:28half marathon, which is just, as I say, 128 days away.
- 13:32But Aaron, from 1/2 marathon perspective, 128 days perhaps
- 13:36from an organiser's perspective, doesn't seem that far away.
- 13:39But there's time there for people to train, isn't there?
- 13:42Four months, effectively. Yeah, absolutely.
- 13:44I think it is from 128 days. I think four months, six days,
- 13:48you, you, you typically look at at half marathon training plans,
- 13:51if that's the distance you could aim for, you know, typically for
- 13:54a minimum of 12 weeks, but obviously with the base level of
- 13:56fitness. So what I would say is take,
- 13:59take a look at our, our free training sessions.
- 14:01They begin on the 16th of July, particularly for for any
- 14:05newbies, anyone that might be a little bit nervous, maybe think
- 14:08that they can't, can't take on the half marathon distance and
- 14:10maybe done a 5K or A10K before and thinking about it.
- 14:14Come along and speak with the Pacers that are going to be,
- 14:16there are several sponsored Pacers.
- 14:19Speak with the running coaches and get that advice.
- 14:22Meet new people and get involved is what we would say.
- 14:25And previously they've taken place, sorry, at Bushfield
- 14:29Sports Center, same venue again, Yep.
- 14:31Same venue again, same amount of sessions and they take place
- 14:34every other Wednesday evening and we say arrive just before
- 14:377:00. A little bit of a quick briefing
- 14:39as to the format and split everybody up into the the right
- 14:41pace group so that you don't feel like you're running in a
- 14:43group which is too slow or too fast for your ability.
- 14:46And there's training plans available as well, yes, that
- 14:48you'll be having online. Yep, there is free, free
- 14:50training plans that we've put together to be able to follow
- 14:52the exact amount of runs week by week, whether it's a rest day, a
- 14:55quick run or a long run. So you can follow that day by
- 14:59day all the way through to to the 12th of October.
- 15:02Brilliant stuff and that starts on the 16th of July.
- 15:05Free training sessions at Bushfield Sports Centre here in
- 15:07Peterborough. You'll find all the information,
- 15:10whether it be for the 5K fun run or the half marathon on the
- 15:12website whichisgreateasternrun.co.uk.
- 15:17Carol, just to bring you back in there from a we've talked about
- 15:22the 5K there, but there's also opportunities for people to
- 15:25support Anna's Hope in the half marathon as well.
- 15:28Absolutely. Obviously we never say, you
- 15:31know, we do actually have some people that are wanting to do
- 15:34the half marathon as well. And yeah, there'll be fairy
- 15:37cakes waiting for them as well. In fact, many a time we've had
- 15:41people running in the half marathon dressed as fairies.
- 15:44So if you see any fairies on the day, they're either running in
- 15:46the half marathon or in the 5K. And Aaron, just to bring you
- 15:52back in there again, that's what makes it such an inclusive
- 15:54event, whether it be in fancy dress, whether you volunteer or
- 15:57whether you're actually running the 5K or the half marathon, it
- 16:00just allows somebody to take part at any level that they wish
- 16:05to. Exactly that is, is any level,
- 16:07as I say, from the the, the really young ones all all the
- 16:10way through to the ones that have have, you know, done
- 16:12hundreds of half marathons and 10K events previously and, you
- 16:15know, can run a half marathon in just over an hour.
- 16:17It's it's for the elites all the way through to the the first
- 16:21timers and, and the ones that are taking on for for the very
- 16:23first time. So, so yeah, absolutely we we
- 16:26would put on the event for everybody.
- 16:27And the one that finishes first in the race and the half
- 16:31marathon and the 5K, it gets just as loud a cheer as the one
- 16:34that is the final finisher with the tail markers.
- 16:36Brilliant stuff. Let's have a little chat about
- 16:38the route itself then, for the half marathon, first
- 16:41encompassing the cathedral once again, yeah.
- 16:43Absolutely. I think out of the three years
- 16:45that we've held it previously is good running and obviously a lot
- 16:47of the years under under the tenure of Peterborough City
- 16:50Council before that. But we've got to a point now
- 16:52where I think that the last year's route had some really,
- 16:54really good feedback added in Peterborough Cathedral two years
- 16:57ago. And we added in Bridge St. as
- 17:00well as as a bit of a feature towards the end of the of the,
- 17:03the half marathon and the 5K route last year.
- 17:05So we'll look to keep that same route again this year.
- 17:07Went down really well last year. And as, as we say here, it
- 17:11fosters some, some really, really good times.
- 17:13A very fast flat route for for both the half marathon and the
- 17:165K. Yeah, it's a great vantage
- 17:18point, isn't it, where, where the runners on the way out,
- 17:21starting just outside the Lido in Peterborough here, the head
- 17:25out along Borges Blvd. It's a great vantage point
- 17:28there, but also when their loved ones are coming back from the
- 17:30half marathon, they're also able to stand on that Bridge St. area
- 17:33and then cheer them back in across towards that finish line
- 17:35back towards the Lido. Yeah, we've seen the last couple
- 17:38of years obviously for a couple of points during the route that
- 17:41obviously it passes through the city centre before heading out
- 17:44in the past and Walton and went and directions to then come back
- 17:48in. As you say, you've got that
- 17:49focal point for the runners of the cathedral that you can see
- 17:52obviously in the 6-7 mile stages when they're then starting to
- 17:55head South back towards the city center again.
- 17:57But also for the spectators and supporters that come along, you
- 18:00can see them in an early stage of Eva route and then in the
- 18:04latter stage when particularly for the half marathon is really
- 18:06leaning towards the the end once they've run 1212 1/2 miles by
- 18:10that. Stage indeed.
- 18:11And that's the that's the important part here, isn't it?
- 18:13That the spectators, family members and the city itself can
- 18:17really help support the runners that are out there and putting 1
- 18:20foot in front of the other, whether they're raising money
- 18:22for A cause that's close to the heart or just doing it because
- 18:25they wish to complete 1/2 marathon.
- 18:26Exactly that. I've I've run quite a few events
- 18:29myself and, and I'm going to obviously be biased as the
- 18:32obviously the race director of the great Eastern.
- 18:34But knowing a route like it, where obviously it takes in a
- 18:37lot of the residential areas all around the different boroughs of
- 18:39Peterborough, that it's one that really does encourage the, the
- 18:43spectators of, you know, connected to the runners, but
- 18:46also the houses along the route that come out and have their
- 18:49music speakers and play instruments and have, you know,
- 18:53bowls of Haribo and Jelly babies and have made signs and, and all
- 18:56sorts. When you go around the route on
- 18:58the day in the lead car and, and obviously see all of this, it,
- 19:01you know, it doesn't bring to your throat seeing how many
- 19:05people around Peterborough, even though they're not taking part
- 19:08in the event, get involved in the event and get behind it to
- 19:10really cheer everybody on. Yeah.
- 19:12And I mean, I mentioned Warrington, for example, because
- 19:15that's the halfway point and David's lane there, it's a sea
- 19:18of people at times. Have run the half marathon
- 19:20myself. And it's just a great atmosphere
- 19:23along there with families coming out, people of all ages, whether
- 19:26it be music, loud cheers, high fives, banners up, just
- 19:31encouraging the runners that are out on the streets there as
- 19:33well. And you get into that halfway
- 19:35point, you need that little bit of a boost to know that you're
- 19:37on your way back then once you've left Warrington.
- 19:40Quite obviously a landmark in terms of knowing when you hit
- 19:42David's Lane. Obviously for those with the
- 19:43local knowledge, when you get into Warrington and along
- 19:45David's Lane, that's the most northern point of the route.
- 19:47So as soon as you've you've got to the end of the stretch of

- 22:05Good evening and welcome back to the PCR Sports Show here on PCR
- 22:08FM Thank you for joining us. We're here every Friday between
- 22:116:00 and 7:00 to sustain the local sporting headlines from in
- 22:16and around our city of Peterborough.
- 22:19Tonight is no different, and we're joined on the show tonight
- 22:22by Aaron Morrell from Good Running Events and Carol Hughes
- 22:26from Anna's Hope, a charity partner of the 5K Fun Run.
- 22:30We're talking all about the Great Eastern Run, which is just
- 22:33128 days away now, takes place on Sunday the 12th of October in
- 22:38our City Half Marathon, making its way up towards Warrington
- 22:42and finishing just outside the Lido, encompassing the
- 22:46Peterborough Cathedral as well. Aaron, we've mentioned just
- 22:51before the break there that it is very much a a city LED event.
- 22:55Yes, you're the race director, but you can't put this event on
- 22:58without the support of the city and it's people and the
- 23:02businesses that are in and around.
- 23:04Absolutely. You're relying off it, you know,
- 23:06for events of this scale and size, you rely on, on so many
- 23:09different people and so many different partners to be able
- 23:11to, to deliver the event, whether it's behind the scenes
- 23:13and you know, the vans are delivering the the water to the
- 23:16water stations. The support from Peterborough
- 23:18City Council and Peterborough Cathedral, both of which
- 23:21obviously we couldn't put on the event in the 1st place and get
- 23:23the permission to obviously put the root where we'd like to.
- 23:27But obviously for local businesses as well, like Savils
- 23:30and Kingsley Beverages, both of which are both based in
- 23:32Peterborough City Center, to be able to support us as race
- 23:36sponsors and be able to put on the event.
- 23:39So, yeah, we rely on, on, on such a, a, you know, a large
- 23:42group of, of, of partners and sponsors, you know, Smith's
- 23:45motor Group that provide the lead car that's all branded up
- 23:49for, for obviously race day and help us live with the logistics
- 23:51of the event. There's there's so many
- 23:53different, you know, moving parts that that that deliver,
- 23:56you know, an event of this scale.
- 23:57Certainly is and yeah, it's certainly an opportunity for
- 24:00local businesses and the local people here in Peterborough to
- 24:03get involved in the event. So that's the, I suppose the
- 24:06economy side of things, but bringing all those people into
- 24:09the city centre must also have that knock on effect of
- 24:12providing a boost for trade in the city centre on a Sunday
- 24:16morning. It really does.
- 24:17Obviously it's early on a Sunday morning, obviously a few few
- 24:20hours of obviously inconvenience, which we
- 24:21appreciate obviously for for the people that obviously, you know,
- 24:24have the the knock on effect. But you know, for, for the AEPG
- 24:28greatest and run to take place. You know, you, as I say, rely on
- 24:31such a, such a large group to, to be able to, to support the,
- 24:35the race and be able to be able to put it on and, you know, to
- 24:37be able to have that boost, you know, of the, of the numbers of
- 24:40visitors coming into the city and, you know, buying, buying
- 24:42coffee in the coffee shops and, you know, booking the tables in
- 24:46the restaurants immediately after the race and staying in
- 24:48the hotels and, you know, having a weekend in, in Peterborough
- 24:51and in Cambridgeshire. So, yeah, there's obviously so
- 24:53many, so many different benefits obviously to the city and the
- 24:56wider area, you know, without even starting to think about,
- 24:59you know, the, the, the fundraising that it does for
- 25:01charity. Indeed, and a figure from a
- 25:04fundraising perspective. Yep.
- 25:06So we, we, we normally look at around 1/4 of a million pounds
- 25:09each year for a property. It's not just obviously, you
- 25:12know, our headline charities that, that obviously we have on
- 25:15board that, that obviously being a benefit from the, the
- 25:17fundraising. We've, we've got a whole host of
- 25:18over 25 different local and national charity partners now,
- 25:21mostly local. So making sure that obviously
- 25:24the fundraising through the event is, is obviously, you
- 25:27know, hitting, hitting to the heart of Peterborough and the
- 25:29local area. And they're probably the ones
- 25:30that you only know about as well, because the thousands of
- 25:32people taking part, whether it be in Anna's Hope 5K, Fun Run or
- 25:35the half marathon, they may well be raising money for A cause
- 25:38that's very, very much close to the heart.
- 25:39Yeah, it's obviously as you say, it's just the the official
- 25:42partnerships that we obviously have through the event.
- 25:44Obviously without obviously the thousands of people that you
- 25:47know might be raising you know, 50 lbs or or 5000 lbs.
- 25:50Obviously for for all of the causes and all of the different
- 25:53stories that that obviously through an event like this that
- 25:56you know, it helps to facilitate.
- 25:58Yeah, Carol, just to bring you in there from a charity
- 26:01perspective that must the event itself and the 5K fun run, the
- 26:07awareness it gives you and the opportunity to talk about Annas
- 26:10hope and the great work that you do, an event like this must be
- 26:14invaluable for you. Absolutely.
- 26:16But it's a great opportunity, as Aaron's just said, for all the
- 26:20charities around to come together.
- 26:22It's very important. And I'm, you know, I'm very keen
- 26:25for as many charities to because it's more people involved in the
- 26:29run and the, and for the run to grow.
- 26:31It is really important. Yeah.
- 26:34We've got some free places in the Anna's Hope 5K and if you
- 26:40want to contact us on admin@annashope.co.uk I have a
- 26:45free place. All I'm asking you to do is to
- 26:48raise at least 35 lbs and that will help us.
- 26:54And that 35 lbs is that, could that relate to something in
- 26:57terms of the support that that can offer?
- 26:58Yeah, with Anna's hope, every single penny goes to the
- 27:01charity. I'm not paid.
- 27:02Everything goes in. We have a service called Rainbow
- 27:06and which is based out of Addenbrooke's and we have
- 27:10physios, occupational therapy and speech and language.
- 27:14There's psychology as well and the schooling, but nothing's too
- 27:18much trouble, but that's where the money's going.
- 27:21We're also supporting the clinical lead there as well.
- 27:25So yeah, there's some great work being done.
- 27:28We also are involved with conferences as well, biannual
- 27:31conferences and camps for children as well.
- 27:36You were talking about schools earlier, sorry.
- 27:38Let's let's have a chat about them and the opportunity for
- 27:41schools to get involved as well in the 5K funding.
- 27:43Yeah, so the schools challenge that Anna's Hope has.
- 27:46We the first, the school that raises the most money for Anna's
- 27:49Hope gets a voucher from Little Bug Snug Osborne Books of £250.
- 27:56Wow, yeah, that's the first one. And then we have three runners
- 28:00up prizes for a second, third and 4th of £50 each and also the
- 28:06all of them get trophies, all from Anna's Hope.
- 28:09So we have certain schools that are in every year and need to
- 28:13better themselves. But it's great.
- 28:16I've just been contact by two schools I've never even heard of
- 28:19in Peterborough and I can't wait to meet them.
- 28:23So yeah, it's, you know, it's important.
- 28:25Brain tumours now. The biggest cancer killer in
- 28:27children and young people under the age of 40 now.
- 28:30And yeah, it's, it's tragic. And we just want to with Anna's
- 28:35legacy, just want to do the best we can in Anna's name to help
- 28:39the children and their families because for those that look
- 28:42enough to survive their, you know, their potential may not be
- 28:44the same again. And we want to give them the
- 28:46best potential for them individually and.
- 28:49If schools want to get involved, then to get in touch with you
- 28:51again via that e-mail address. Absolutely.
- 28:53So if you if the schools want to get in touch with us, it's
- 28:56Anna's Hope at admin@annashope.co.uk.
- 29:01And to hear from you, yes, and there's a few schools that have
- 29:05done very well over the years for you as well.
- 29:07Absolutely yes, one of the shout out to them, well, one of them
- 29:11that seems to win every year and has done, but you've got to be
- 29:14in it to win it. As some people say, a caster
- 29:17school. They have done very well over
- 29:20the years. This mean park, there's lots of
- 29:23the academies around. There's too many to and you
- 29:27know, both in Peterborough and the surrounding district as
- 29:30well. But yeah, it's and as, as you
- 29:33rightly say that people come from far and wide, it'd be great
- 29:36to to for us to see, won't it, Aaron, people coming from around
- 29:40the region. Yeah.
- 29:41So it's a great opportunity for schools to incorporate the 5K
- 29:45training and get children active in the coming weeks and then
- 29:50over the summer period. And then obviously when they
- 29:52come back, they've the Great Eastern run is only, what, two
- 29:54months into the school term? Probably, yeah.
- 29:56Well, a lot of them go to the park runs and a lot of the
- 29:59schools, the Peterborough High School there, the Peterborough
- 30:02School, they get involved and they're already in training in
- 30:05the sports lessons and things already.
- 30:09But you don't have to be fit. You can, as I say, put 1 foot in
- 30:12front of the other and have some fun.
- 30:17And that's what it's all about, isn't it, Aaron?
- 30:18This is an opportunity for people to, if they want to go
- 30:21out and run a PB, you know, that's the focus for some.
- 30:24For others, it's just that achievement of whether it's
- 30:26completing the 5K or whether it's completing the half
- 30:28marathon. It is, and that's kind of the
- 30:31beauty of the event really, that there's so many different, so
- 30:34many different characters, so many different stories, so many
- 30:37different abilities. As I touched upon earlier.
- 30:40You know, you do do have Jonathan the the one, the, the,
- 30:42the male half marathon last year from from Cambridge and
- 30:45Coleridge, he won it just over an hour.
- 30:47But you've you've still got the runners that have, you know,
- 30:50been out there for 3 1/2 hours, which is the the cut off for the
- 30:52half marathon time. So there's there's so many
- 30:55different abilities, so many different communities that that
- 30:57get involved in the AEPG greatest and run that, that you
- 31:00you know that that everybody has got a story, whether it's just
- 31:03that they're just starting out. I've just found running have
- 31:05have done a park run this year for the first time.
- 31:08Obviously there's so many fantastic park runs around and
- 31:11obviously other events to get involved with.
- 31:13So, so that's that's the beauty of the event that there, you
- 31:15know, no one story is the same from different charities,
- 31:18different abilities. Yeah, we talked about the fairy
- 31:21cakes, which which I'm sure a welcome boost for runners once
- 31:25they've finished the 5K or the half marathon and the race
- 31:28village itself. So it's not just the half
- 31:30marathon, is it? And it's not just the 5K.
- 31:32There's a race village around this which allows people just to
- 31:34make it a real community feel. Yep, absolutely.
- 31:37So Embankment is obviously our central hub, if you like, of the
- 31:40event. It's where everybody comes down
- 31:42to pick up the bib number if they need to drop off the bag.
- 31:46We have a large stage based embankment with some live music
- 31:49on there. And it's where we do our warm
- 31:51ups with our fitness partner Vivacity before taking on either
- 31:54the half marathon or the 5K in the APG Great Eastern Run.
- 31:58It's kind of where all of the families, if they're not heading
- 32:01out onto the route to spectate, kind of wait for the runners to
- 32:03come back and, and cheer them at the start finish line, which as
- 32:06you say said earlier, is just outside of the Lido on Bishops
- 32:09Road. And, and obviously where
- 32:11everybody then heads back to and, you know, buys their
- 32:14coffees and their burgers and meets the local charities and
- 32:16the local sponsors that are at the Embankment as well.
- 32:19Carol, of course. We mustn't forget Dino.
- 32:23Indeed. And Dino is very much a part of
- 32:25the great Eastern men and especially for the warm ups as
- 32:28well. He gets involved and yeah, he's
- 32:31a he's a very good dinosaur. And from the race village
- 32:36itself, Aaron on the stage where the warm up takes place as well.
- 32:40It's an opportunity for people just to partake in that, but
- 32:43also for the the community to get involved from a charity
- 32:47stores perspective or businesses to be involved as well.
- 32:50Yep, absolutely don't necessarily have to be linked
- 32:52with the event. As a, as a charity partner, we,
- 32:54we certainly, you know, welcome a conversation with, with
- 32:57anybody where it's a, you know, a new partnership, a new sponsor
- 32:59or a new charity or community group that want to come down
- 33:02and, and get involved with the events.
- 33:03So for example, Salvation Army have worked with us since the
- 33:06beginning when we took over the event.
- 33:07And there they have some musical entertainment based within the
- 33:10route as well as help us with the volunteers, which is
- 33:12obviously most, most welcome to, you know, raise the profile of
- 33:15the event as well. So, so yeah, we're welcome a
- 33:18conversation with anybody that wants to get involved.
- 33:20Yeah, you mentioned volunteers there.
- 33:21Yeah, I think it's fair to say the event wouldn't take place
- 33:25without them. Absolutely.
- 33:27They're so, so, so critical because obviously there's so
- 33:29many different areas from course and events set up in the days
- 33:33before obviously race delivery in terms of of, you know, having
- 33:36the volunteers ready to to hand over the replacement bib numbers
- 33:39and take the bags at Embankment through to Marshall.
- 33:42Packing the goody bags, marshalling the roof, for
- 33:44example. So many different aspects and so
- 33:46many different elements that that, as I say, you know, come
- 33:48together on race weekend to, to to put on the spectacle that it
- 33:51is. And that's where the local
- 33:53running clubs get involved then? Yeah, the great the GPAN network
- 33:56of running clubs in this local area really support the event by
- 33:59providing those volunteers Marshalls and Pacers.
- 34:03Yeah, I, I say shout out for the Pacers.
- 34:05I say it time and time again that that I don't know of a
- 34:08community like GPAN around in different areas of the UK that
- 34:12obviously GPAN being the greater Peterborough Athletics Network
- 34:15that that you know, is the, is the local collection of, of
- 34:18running clubs sitting in around Peterborough.
- 34:20I won't go into obviously the, the full list, but they, they
- 34:23all as a collective have, have been fantastic, really have
- 34:25fantastic supporters of, of the event since since we took it
- 34:29over and obviously prior to good running events putting it on as
- 34:32well. So yeah, big shout out to all of
- 34:33them. Yeah, we couldn't do without
- 34:35them. So if you're listening out
- 34:36there, guys, thank you very much.
- 34:38And get in touch with Aaron again for this year's event as
- 34:41well, right? We're just going to take another
- 34:43short break and we'll be back with Carol and Aaron very
- 34:46shortly. Playing the greatest songs of

- 36:51just hit the Listen again button.
- 36:53Thank you for joining us for the show this evening.
- 36:56We've been chatting to Carol Hughes from Anna's Hope, the
- 36:59charity partner for the 5K Fun Run, and Aaron Morrell from Good
- 37:03Running Events, organisers of the Great Eastern Run itself,
- 37:07and there is just 128 days to go, so there's still time to get
- 37:11your entries in. Go through to the website
- 37:13whichisgreateasternrun.co.uk and it takes place on Sunday the
- 37:1712th of October. If you're worried about training
- 37:21for it, don't be because there are free training plans
- 37:24available. There's free training sessions
- 37:25available as well and Aaron, those training sessions take
- 37:28place starting next month. Yes, 16th of July and obviously
- 37:32you'll know from being there as well at the previous sessions
- 37:35and previous years in alleged that that Tim and the guys
- 37:38obviously we we put those together completely free, don't
- 37:40need to register, don't need to pay.
- 37:42So if you only attend one of the seven sessions, I think we have
- 37:45in in total, absolutely up to you.
- 37:47But it's it's good just to to get out and meet, meet new
- 37:50people, meet new runners, like minded people and absolutely
- 37:53everybody is welcome. Yeah, and that's the beauty of
- 37:55it is it's very much an event that people can take part in
- 37:58various guises. Absolutely the the, the
- 38:00different roles, obviously, as I say, coming along along to those
- 38:04training sessions prior to the races, especially if you do
- 38:07decide to come along to a few of them meet.
- 38:09Obviously Tim, as well as all of the Pacers who I've actually had
- 38:12a message during the show from Tim cooking.
- 38:14He's actually said that all of the Pacers are now now all fully
- 38:17recruited for this year. So we've got a really big team
- 38:19of, of Pacers for from, you know, the 130 times all the way
- 38:22through to the, the 2:45 get your own time.
- 38:24So yeah, they're all, they're all fully recruited.
- 38:26And thanks to Tim for that. Indeed, good to know he's
- 38:28listening. He's on the show only a few
- 38:29weeks weeks ago, actually. He's probably critiquing you
- 38:31perhaps as to how you're getting on this evening.
- 38:33But no, it's great to have that volunteer support, but also from
- 38:37a business perspective in the city as well, this event really
- 38:40wouldn't take place with that without that financial backing
- 38:42as well. It really wouldn't.
- 38:44As I say, there's so, so many different parts that that, as
- 38:46you were saying, and obviously, particularly the weeks before
- 38:48and obviously the months of planning, but really come
- 38:50together in those few days across obviously the October
- 38:54weekend that it's always held. And particularly AEPG, they've
- 38:57they've been big, big supporters as sponsored since the very
- 39:01beginning when I and as good running events took over the
- 39:04event. And the support from Ashley and
- 39:07the team at APG really has been top notch.
- 39:09And as you say, the event really couldn't go ahead without it.
- 39:12So a massive thanks to them. And you were talking about the
- 39:14Paces as well. They've got they're sponsored by
- 39:17Savils. Alright, just explain what a
- 39:19pacer does for those that are. Listening so a pacer in a
- 39:22nutshell, will be a runner who you can kind of attach yourself
- 39:25along to to if you're looking for a particular time, look out
- 39:28for for the massive flag that they'll be wearing on their
- 39:31backs. So they, they, they go through,
- 39:32depending on the time that they're running 130 through to,
- 39:34to two hours 45 and be wearing that, that flag on their backs,
- 39:37particularly on a, on a, you know, a windy day that, you
- 39:40know, it doesn't matter what the weather is on on race day,
- 39:43they'll be wearing those flags and make sure you keep an eye
- 39:44out for those. And, and Tim's got the full
- 39:46complement of, of, of 20 odd paces now through all of the
- 39:49different times. So whether you're looking for
- 39:511/2 marathon in an hour and a half or taking on your very
- 39:54first and you want to be able to attach to a group to get you
- 39:57around there, there is a time for you and, and a group led by
- 40:00those paces for you. And they're, they're massively
- 40:03helpful to, to be able to, to get you around, having used them
- 40:05myself before. And again, they're volunteers
- 40:07who've given up their their run effectively, haven't they?
- 40:09As well. They could potentially want to
- 40:11go out and run a quicker time, but they're actually supporting
- 40:13others to do that. They really are giving up their
- 40:15time, obviously, the entry into the event to be able to support,
- 40:19obviously the group of runners that are going for that
- 40:21particular time. But they'll have words of advice
- 40:25pre race and during the race itself, and they'll have words
- 40:27of encouragement. And and as you say, they they
- 40:29will be damn the iraqurate to to that time that they're they're
- 40:32obviously going to be able to get your own force.
- 40:34So they're, they're a massive help and our, our thanks to them
- 40:36as well as as Tim for, for recruiting them for us.
- 40:39Carol. I just wanted to go back to the
- 40:41running sessions. I go along as well and what I
- 40:43witness is is absolutely awesome because lots of people come
- 40:47along. They're actually perhaps doing
- 40:49this for the first time and they're frightened, but they'll
- 40:52be. They actually meet other people.
- 40:54They become running buddies, which is really lovely.
- 40:56And as I've just said about the paces there, you meet the paces
- 40:59that night as well and you become friends.
- 41:02And on the day it doesn't seem so overwhelming because you're
- 41:07running with your team. And as I say, as Aaron said with
- 41:11the at the time, you can either, you can go into one group if
- 41:15it's too much for you, just drop down a group.
- 41:17But it's all it's about coming together as a community.
- 41:20And as I say, the running buddies are really strong and I
- 41:23know several now that are still friends and going for running
- 41:26again and. That's what running does for you
- 41:28and now we've had the Park run organisers on this show, we've
- 41:32had Tim Cook on From AG Pan perspective and we always do
- 41:35talk about running, not just being about the run itself, but
- 41:38how sociable it can be. We know the benefits that it
- 41:41provides not just but also to your mental health as well.
- 41:44And if the half marathon is something that you have been
- 41:47targeting perhaps over the years and stood out on the streets and
- 41:50watched people run past your house and you thought I'd like a
- 41:54go at that, then this is your opportunity.
- 41:56It's on the Sunday the 12th of October and for all the
- 41:59information you'll find that on greateasternrun.co.uk.
- 42:04Yeah, I've, I've got a question for you guys.
- 42:06I'm thinking more about the elite side of the run now and
- 42:10I'm also thinking about where we live.
- 42:12Our city is really flat. Does that attract some good
- 42:16runners who who want to maybe register a good time?
- 42:19Is this one of those races that they look for in the season?
- 42:22It really does. So we do have some elite places
- 42:25available and the full, full details on the website Great
- 42:27Eastern dot co.uk. But but obviously, as you say
- 42:31there, there isn't really a hill to be found anywhere either
- 42:34doing the 5K or the half marathon.
- 42:35Nothing. I think I've always been told
- 42:37it's the second flattest half marathon route in the whole
- 42:39country. And even through the
- 42:41improvements and small tweaks and changes that we've made,
- 42:43we've, we've still tried, you know, in all of the planning to
- 42:46keep that in the forefront that, you know, we don't, you know,
- 42:49instead of taking the left to go down that way, we take a right
- 42:51and go the other way. And, and, and obviously as a
- 42:53result, then, you know, lose that really flat element.
- 42:56So it's great for for people, bees, personal best times and
- 43:00and yeah, there's not a hill to be found.
- 43:02So it's good for your half marathon than your 5K?
- 43:05And and great, of course for the spectators to come along and you
- 43:09know, they're they're going to get involved with the whole feel
- 43:11good factor, but also the opportunities is to some quality
- 43:13runners. Yes, absolutely.
- 43:15But obviously for the ones that that obviously just, you know,
- 43:17go just over the hour in the half marathon and obviously, you
- 43:21know, 1516 minutes in the 5K, we've had some some really good
- 43:24times over the years. So yeah, Jonathan, that that won
- 43:27last year in just over an hour. But as you say, you, you put on
- 43:30the event for, for, for those elites all but all the way
- 43:33through the abilities all the way around to the, you know,
- 43:35the, the three hours 30 that are taking on their first half
- 43:37marathon. So yeah, we put put the event on
- 43:40for absolutely everybody. Very inclusive.
- 43:42Yeah, definitely. Carol, we've only got literally
- 43:453 minutes, 3 or 4 minutes left of the show, but just want to
- 43:47give our listeners a reminder again of the opportunities to
- 43:50take part in the 5K fun run. The school's challenge that
- 43:54you've got the three places that you mentioned earlier on in the
- 43:56show as well, and just how people can get involved in the
- 43:595K fun run. Yeah, well, as I said before,
- 44:01it's I'm very keen for lots of charities to come along and to
- 44:04raise their profile and any money that they can.
- 44:08Obviously I'd love you to run for us.
- 44:10And I have some free places for the Amazon 5K Fun run.
- 44:14And to do that, I'm asking for each place that's taken to raise
- 44:19at least 35 lbs per entry. And to do that, you need to get
- 44:24in touch with me, Carol, at admin@annashope.co.uk.
- 44:29I'd love to hear from you and come along and join Team Anna's.
- 44:33Hope we have some fun and yeah, look forward to seeing you.
- 44:38And can I just check the fairy cakes have been ordered?
- 44:39Absolutely. That's a vital component.
- 44:43Component A Sunday morning. Absolutely.
- 44:44And any schools. And also we have football clubs
- 44:47as well. And then I forgot you.
- 44:48Sorry. I hope you're not listening.
- 44:51If you'd like to join in then that's great.
- 44:54So it's many a community organization can get involved
- 44:57here, whether it's the children all the way up to I think Aaron
- 45:01was saying that, you know, 8090 year olds that have taken part
- 45:03in the half marathon. Yeah, yeah, I've got 4 year olds
- 45:06that are actually doing it for the first time this year who are
- 45:10actually parents have done it and they've been dying because
- 45:13we've been watching on the on the sidelines and saying how
- 45:15they want to do it and they've reached 4 and they're going to
- 45:18taking part this year. But as I said before, in the
- 45:21Anasote 5K anyway, we've had some 90 year old men doing it,
- 45:25which it's pretty good at 19. It's impressive.
- 45:29My mother's 19. I don't think she could do that.
- 45:32Aaron, I know you're very busy on the day, but ever been
- 45:35tempted to run it the course itself because such a.
- 45:38Bit I'm very, very tempted I will get round to doing it one
- 45:41of these years. Obviously as a massive team were
- 45:42involved in delivering obviously the whole weekend.
- 45:45And yeah, it's a very busy day. But I think the Great Eastern is
- 45:48one of nine events that that good running events puts on.
- 45:50Now obviously in and around the in around East Anglia.
- 45:54And we would do several events at Sandringham Estate, obviously
- 45:57just down the road. But I think of all of my events,
- 45:59I've only ever run the 10K event that we put on at Sneston Race
- 46:02Circuit, which is obviously back an hour 1/4 away from here.
- 46:06And yeah, that's the one event which I've managed to do of our
- 46:10own. But I will get round to it one
- 46:11of the easiest. You're, you're running yourself,
- 46:15aren't you? Yeah, you know, you're keen to.
- 46:17From that perspective, you can really help put a race on like
- 46:21that, knowing how runners would feel while they're taking on,
- 46:25whether it be a 5K10K or 1/2 marathon.
- 46:27Exactly, and think about, you know, taking on the event with,
- 46:30you know, a runner's cap and obviously haven't had the
- 46:31experience of, of other different events and other park
- 46:34runs. And, and yeah, I see a shout out
- 46:38to, to, to obviously the G Pen networked obviously the the club
- 46:41events that they put on. Obviously there's the Grand Prix
- 46:43series which is going to be starting imminently and
- 46:46Wednesday, Wednesday night. So, so one of five that are
- 46:50going to be over the coming weeks and try to you know, take
- 46:54on the experience from doing the other local events as well and
- 46:57supporting them as much as as they support us.
- 46:59Yep. So somebody wants to get
- 47:00involved. What do I need to do?
- 47:02Yep. So either the half marathon of
- 47:03the 5K. You can even get in touch with
- 47:06us for for any additional questions or information
- 47:08info@goodrunningevents.co.uk or if you want the information
- 47:11which is on the website, it's www.greateasternrun.co.uk.
- 47:16Brilliant stuff. Thank you.
- 47:17All right. And Carol, just a reminder of
- 47:18your e-mail addresses again to get hold of yourself.
- 47:21My e-mail is adminannashope.co.uk and I hope
- 47:25to hear from you. Brilliant stuff, Carol.
- 47:28Thank you very much for joining us and telling us all about
- 47:31Anna's hope and the legacy that you've built in her memory.
- 47:35It's very poignant. And Aaron, thanks for coming
- 47:37back on the show again. Not your first gig, is it?
- 47:40It is. I should probably really have
- 47:42like a Lord Deport card or something on the on the door on
- 47:44the way in. But appreciate you having us
- 47:46back. Not a problem, happy to raise
- 47:48the profile of such a a huge event for the city.
- 47:51Whether you're taking part in 1/2 marathon or the 5K Fun Run,
- 47:54it really is an inclusive event for the whole city.
- 47:56And no doubt we'll get you back on sometime in October, probably
- 48:00before it really gets brought for you in early October.
- 48:02Absolutely look forward to. It can.
- 48:03I just wish everybody the best of luck.
- 48:05Thank you very much, Carol. Nigel, thank you very much again
- 48:08for your help this evening with the headlines and we're looking
- 48:11forward to another great sporting weekend no doubt.
- 48:13Definitely, yeah, I think we've got some nice weather on the
- 48:15way, so because stuff. Fingers crossed.
- 48:17So if you have missed any of the show this evening, you can't
- 48:20listen back to us via the PCRFM app or on line through the
- 48:24website whichispcrfm.co.uk. But whatever you involvement in
- 48:29sport this weekend, whether it's volunteering, playing or
- 48:32spectating, we do wish you a very successful and enjoyable
- 48:35sporting weekend.
