- 0:02Speaker 1: Jeez, this is such a treat.
- 0:09Speaker 2: The man we're about to speak to, I tell you what, Mogies, multi-talented,
- 0:13Speaker 2: is that a fair comment?
- 0:14Speaker 3: That sounds about right.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Actor, director, comedian. Lover.
- 0:21Speaker 4: Stallion. Stallion.
- 0:22Speaker 2: I'm talking about the one and only Jesse Griffin. Jesse,
- 0:26Speaker 2: you mad bastard. How's life?
- 0:29Speaker 4: Good, thanks, Jase. How are you? Yeah, good, thanks, man.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Well, actually, I've been a bit sneezy and snotty today.
- 0:35Speaker 2: I'm about to go on holiday for two weeks, and
- 0:38Speaker 2: I'm getting the feeling that my body's about to shit
- 0:41Speaker 2: the bed.
- 0:42Speaker 4: Well, that's different to being snotty in the nose, though,
- 0:44Speaker 4: isn't it?
- 0:45Speaker 2: Well, it's slightly different.
- 0:46Speaker 3: That's a precursor for Jase. If his nose starts getting runny,
- 0:50Speaker 3: his arse is about to fall out. Yes.
- 0:52Speaker 4: Oh, that's lovely.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Hey, but Jase, great to have you in, mate. Now,
- 0:56Speaker 2: you've made a short film. I have. And old Mogi here,
- 1:00Speaker 2: he was just raving about it. I'll be honest with you,
- 1:04Speaker 2: I haven't seen it yet, but I've read the premise.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Lucky Luke, tell us all about it.
- 1:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:11Speaker 4: It's a film that I wanted to make because it's
- 1:16Speaker 4: about sort of a whole lot of adults that are
- 1:18Speaker 4: sort of hopeless.
- 1:20Speaker 5: Yes.
- 1:21Speaker 4: And a young guy who isn't. And it's sort of
- 1:25Speaker 4: often I like that as a premise and sort of
- 1:27Speaker 4: tension because that's largely what Educators is, essentially the TV
- 1:32Speaker 4: show that I make, of sort of these inept adults
- 1:36Speaker 4: that are sort of immature, but the young people are
- 1:38Speaker 4: kind of the prism by which you kind of see
- 1:41Speaker 4: their behaviour. And it's a great comedic sort of tension
- 1:45Speaker 4: as well where adults get to behave really badly.
- 1:48Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:49Speaker 4: And then you've got sort of this maybe like a
- 1:51Speaker 4: more of a soulful kind of younger kind of perspective
- 1:54Speaker 4: on it.
- 1:55Speaker 3: Yeah, and in the film, so the set-up is the
- 1:58Speaker 3: 18-year-old Luke has just finished school when his mother announces
- 2:00Speaker 3: they're becoming flatmates. And need to split the bills 50-50.
- 2:04Speaker 3: Sounds good to me.
- 2:05Speaker 4: Straight away you're in.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Straight away I'm in.
- 2:07Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:07Speaker 3: And that's how the film starts. And his mother's mad. Yeah.
- 2:12Speaker 3: She's an individual.
- 2:13Speaker 4: She was a young mum.
- 2:14Speaker 5: Yes.
- 2:15Speaker 4: And so she's never really had a life.
- 2:17Speaker 3: No, that's right. It looks like she's making up for
- 2:19Speaker 3: lost time. She's off on a long weekend.
- 2:20Speaker 4: With the girls.
- 2:21Speaker 3: With the girls and is leaving her young son. defend
- 2:25Speaker 3: for himself and he gets in touch with dad played
- 2:27Speaker 3: by rhino cane yes um who's a hopeless shocking bastard
- 2:32Speaker 3: and uh he sort of threw a uh threw a
- 2:35Speaker 3: hungover haze can vaguely remember that a mate of his
- 2:38Speaker 3: might have had a job going yes and and puts
- 2:40Speaker 3: him in touch with this mate um who's a furniture
- 2:42Speaker 3: removalist which is dear to my heart because i did
- 2:44Speaker 3: that for four years played by what's his name Barney Duncan.
- 2:48Speaker 3: Barney Duncan.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Oh, he's great.
- 2:49Speaker 3: Very, very good.
- 2:51Speaker 4: And the great Robbie Nichol is his stoned kind of assistant.
- 2:55Speaker 2: It's interesting, Jesse, because it kind of sounds like you're
- 2:58Speaker 2: describing my life. Oh, well.
- 3:02Speaker 4: Yeah, is that in what way?
- 3:04Speaker 2: In the sense that I've still got my youngest at home.
- 3:08Speaker 2: She's 18.
- 3:09Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:10Speaker 2: I'm an idiot.
- 3:11Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 3:11Speaker 2: And I often, quite seriously, she explains the world to me. Yeah.
- 3:17Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 3:17Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, no, for sure.
- 3:18Speaker 2: And I'm sure that she often looks at me and
- 3:20Speaker 2: sees the insanity and madness. And what she sort of
- 3:25Speaker 2: watches with a kind of indifference.
- 3:27Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:27Speaker 2: But when I'm trying to understand the world, I find
- 3:30Speaker 2: her very useful.
- 3:31Speaker 4: Well, yeah, that's right. I think as you age, you
- 3:34Speaker 4: lose a lot of your ability to be a functioning
- 3:38Speaker 4: human being, really. And it's not like the people that
- 3:41Speaker 4: are adults in this film are that old, but they
- 3:44Speaker 4: just haven't sorted their shit out, I suppose.
- 3:46Speaker 3: No, and that's what it is, right? It's not like
- 3:48Speaker 3: they don't carry... I think the difference is, Jase, you're.
- 3:51Speaker 4: Very aware of your shortcomings.
- 3:53Speaker 2: True.
- 3:53Speaker 4: True, I am.
- 3:54Speaker 3: Whereas these characters.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Well, he has to be, doesn't he?
- 3:58Speaker 4: They're just so glaring.
- 3:59Speaker 2: She's so massive. You know what I mean?
- 4:01Speaker 3: And on this radio show, they're constantly pointed out to you.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Yes.
- 4:05Speaker 3: Whereas the characters, the adults in Lucky Luke, have an
- 4:08Speaker 3: arrogance about them. They have a know-it-all sort of an
- 4:10Speaker 3: attitude to them.
- 4:11Speaker 4: Yeah, or just an unaware of themselves. An obliviousness. Obliviousness.
- 4:15Speaker 4: And they put him, they put Luke, through just carelessness
- 4:19Speaker 4: into this kind of crazy situation that he has to
- 4:21Speaker 4: sort of find his way out of.
- 4:24Speaker 5: Oh, g'day, Matt.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Oh, hi, mate, yeah.
- 4:27Speaker 5: Look, if you want the chance to win all our
- 4:29Speaker 5: on-air competitions and stuff and get amongst the live conversation,
- 4:35Speaker 5: tune in to the Hauraki Big Show, four to seven
- 4:38Speaker 5: weekdays on Radio Hauraki and iHeartRadio.
- 4:43Speaker 1: The Hauraki Big Show with Jase, Mike and Keezy. Tune
- 4:46Speaker 1: in weekdays at four on Radio Hauraki.
- 4:48Speaker 2: We've got the one and only Jesse Griffin, director, actor, comedian, director,
- 4:53Speaker 2: Probably best known, would you say, Jesse, for your work
- 4:57Speaker 2: with educators?
- 4:59Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:59Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:00Speaker 3: I suppose.
- 5:01Speaker 4: I suppose, yeah.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:04Speaker 4: Yeah, TV-wise probably. Oh, I did the show with you guys.
- 5:08Speaker 3: That's true.
- 5:08Speaker 4: That's true.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Oh, yes, true. You did too. My God.
- 5:11Speaker 4: I did The Office in Australia as well, which was
- 5:13Speaker 4: really cool.
- 5:14Speaker 6: Yes.
- 5:14Speaker 4: That was fun.
- 5:14Speaker 2: I've never seen that, actually. I really need to check
- 5:17Speaker 2: that out.
- 5:17Speaker 6: It's always interesting when you go out on a limb
- 5:19Speaker 6: and you say, probably best known for, because as soon
- 5:21Speaker 6: as he said that, I was like, shit, what's Jase
- 5:23Speaker 6: going to say here?
- 5:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Because you've done a lot.
- 5:25Speaker 4: Yeah, that chutney commercial, maybe.
- 5:27Speaker 3: There's that one when you're in the mouth of a shark.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Shark of the shark. Yeah, that's a good one. That's
- 5:32Speaker 2: a cracker. That one.
- 5:34Speaker 4: That will be the thing that most people actually are.
- 5:36Speaker 3: Have you actually heard what's happening with Talkback? Because we
- 5:38Speaker 3: were hoping for a second season, but I've heard nothing,
- 5:40Speaker 3: and I know Keezy's dying to see more.
- 5:43Speaker 2: I am.
- 5:44Speaker 6: And just in case you're not aware, Talkback is a
- 5:46Speaker 6: comedy show on TVNZ Plus.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Check it out.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Is it still there, is it?
- 5:51Speaker 3: Probably not.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:52Speaker 4: Starring these two, written by these two, directed by me
- 5:55Speaker 4: and James Ashcroft.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Who's gone on to bloody... Big time projects. As have you, Jesse.
- 6:02Speaker 2: As have you, Jesse. Now, we're talking about your short film,
- 6:05Speaker 2: Lucky Luke.
- 6:06Speaker 4: Yes.
- 6:07Speaker 2: About adults that are kind of incompetent and their children
- 6:10Speaker 2: who are kind of competent.
- 6:12Speaker 4: I guess so.
- 6:12Speaker 3: Yes.
- 6:13Speaker 2: You know, I... I remember back in the day, Jesse,
- 6:17Speaker 2: talking to my dad and being confused about something. And
- 6:20Speaker 2: I was one of those kids that was always questioning
- 6:23Speaker 2: my father. I used to drive him to distraction. And
- 6:26Speaker 2: I remember him saying, you know, I'd ask him a question.
- 6:29Speaker 2: And without a word of a lie, so many times
- 6:31Speaker 2: I'd go, why? And my dad would go. Because I
- 6:36Speaker 2: said so.
- 6:36Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 6:37Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 6:38Speaker 4: That's helpful, isn't it?
- 6:39Speaker 2: And for some reason, when I'm thinking of your film,
- 6:42Speaker 2: that comes to mind. I don't know why.
- 6:44Speaker 5: Why?
- 6:45Speaker 4: Well, I just wanted to make a film joke. Is
- 6:47Speaker 4: that what you mean?
- 6:48Speaker 2: The adults, you know, just because you're an adult doesn't
- 6:51Speaker 2: mean that actually you have all the answers. Well, that's right.
- 6:54Speaker 4: I think that there's like a spectrum actually of maturity
- 6:58Speaker 4: that we all sit on.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Yes.
- 7:00Speaker 4: And you could be eight and be more mature than, like,
- 7:04Speaker 4: an 80-year-old, you know, like, you know, Axl Rose.
- 7:09Speaker 3: There you go. Great example.
- 7:10Speaker 4: I reckon my kids are probably more mature than him. Yeah. Probably.
- 7:13Speaker 4: I mean, he's a fellow ginger. I probably shouldn't have
- 7:16Speaker 4: thrown him in there like that, but, you know.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Who, incidentally, is your young star in this movie?
- 7:22Speaker 4: He's a great young actor called Kahukura Royal, and he's
- 7:28Speaker 4: also a muso, and he's– Just a very great, really
- 7:32Speaker 4: great creative young guy. He was in Educators, actually, for
- 7:35Speaker 4: a couple of seasons, playing one of the students.
- 7:37Speaker 2: He's very good. He's very, very natural.
- 7:38Speaker 4: Yeah, very natural and really... Very still on screen as well,
- 7:43Speaker 4: like in the frame, you don't kind of, he's not trying,
- 7:45Speaker 4: he's not acting. He's just in it. He's great.
- 7:48Speaker 3: Well, I bloody, I really enjoyed it. And it felt,
- 7:51Speaker 3: it was weird because I felt like I'd seen it before.
- 7:53Speaker 3: Maybe you sent it to me months ago, but I
- 7:54Speaker 3: saw it a couple of weeks ago.
- 7:56Speaker 4: Oh, that would be, it's a full rip off of
- 7:59Speaker 4: an English film from the 90s.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Oh, is that what it is? Yeah, with the same actors.
- 8:03Speaker 4: Yeah, Lucky Luke. Very, very good. No, it was, I
- 8:06Speaker 4: think I did see it.
- 8:07Speaker 3: Yeah, well it's bloody great and it's competing at the
- 8:10Speaker 3: Show Me Shorts Film Festival which is running from October
- 8:13Speaker 3: 7th to October 31st and I think it was last week.
- 8:17Speaker 3: where you would have found out that you'd be nominated
- 8:19Speaker 3: for a few awards.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Yes. You don't care about that, though, eh, Jess?
- 8:23Speaker 4: Well, you care about it.
- 8:23Speaker 2: It's the only thing I care about. Oh, is it really?
- 8:26Speaker 4: No, not really.
- 8:29Speaker 3: And I think you're nominated for Best Director. Does that
- 8:31Speaker 3: sound about right?
- 8:32Speaker 4: Yes, Best Director. Best Short? Not Best Short, but Best
- 8:35Speaker 4: Director and Best Actor for Cove.
- 8:37Speaker 3: Oh, how good.
- 8:37Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 8:38Speaker 3: That would be marvellous.
- 8:39Speaker 6: Jesse Griffin, as we've said, you've got a multitude of
- 8:43Speaker 6: titles within media, within broadcasting, within screen and film. As
- 8:46Speaker 6: a director, when you see a young fella come through
- 8:49Speaker 6: for an audition, you know.
- 8:51Speaker 4: What I mean?
- 8:51Speaker 6: What are you looking for from the other side of
- 8:54Speaker 6: the lens? Because these guys have recently tried to get
- 8:56Speaker 6: me into acting.
- 8:57Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 8:57Speaker 3: It's been going for years now.
- 8:58Speaker 6: And I'm terrified. Hmm. You know, but what are you
- 9:00Speaker 6: as a director looking for in someone? Like, for example,
- 9:03Speaker 6: if I was to audition for Lucky Luke, even though
- 9:05Speaker 6: I'm 35.
- 9:05Speaker 4: Yeah. You know, what are you looking for?
- 9:08Speaker 2: Oh, you'd be good as the incompetent sort of parent.
- 9:11Speaker 3: That's just sitting on the couch.
- 9:13Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:13Speaker 4: Like a sort of crackhead dude.
- 9:17Speaker 2: A crackhead dude?
- 9:18Speaker 4: Like one of his dad's mates? Oh, look, I think
- 9:21Speaker 4: what I look for is someone that's just– they're comfortable–
- 9:27Speaker 4: in their own skin, I suppose. Oh, God. And so
- 9:30Speaker 4: this is terrible news for you. Yeah. And they also
- 9:34Speaker 4: just have the ability to kind of communicate without it
- 9:38Speaker 4: being a, I don't know, complicated, I guess. They're not
- 9:42Speaker 4: putting stuff in the way of it. They're just being themselves.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Right, okay.
- 9:45Speaker 4: And that's what you sort of look for, just naturalness
- 9:48Speaker 4: and sort of the ability to kind of connect with
- 9:51Speaker 4: an audience by... Shit, okay.
- 9:53Speaker 6: Yeah, so you're fucked, Because connecting with an audience, that's... Yeah.
- 9:56Speaker 4: Okay, shit.
- 9:58Speaker 3: Never mind.
- 9:59Speaker 2: If there was only a thing.
- 10:00Speaker 3: You've still got radio.
- 10:01Speaker 4: If there's only a thing that you could do where
- 10:03Speaker 4: you could connect with people every day, if there's only
- 10:06Speaker 4: had that. Something in your life. When pigs can fly, Jesse,
- 10:09Speaker 4: maybe I'll find something.
- 10:10Speaker 2: Maybe you'll find something. So, Jesse, again, where can we
- 10:14Speaker 2: see this? Because I'd love to see it.
- 10:16Speaker 3: It's on at the Show Me Shorts Film Festival, which
- 10:18Speaker 3: is running from the 7th of October to the 31st
- 10:21Speaker 3: of October. Give it a Google and get your tickets now.
- 10:24Speaker 3: I think it's across the country. It feels like a
- 10:26Speaker 3: little bit of Auckland, a little bit of Wellington. Yeah,
- 10:28Speaker 3: it's over the country.
- 10:29Speaker 4: I think so, yeah. Pretty busy around then. Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 10:33Speaker 4: You used to do acting on that telly show you
- 10:37Speaker 4: were on, though, didn't you? You used to do those
- 10:39Speaker 4: sort of pieces that were, you were acting in those.
- 10:41Speaker 3: Crack Goes Wild?
- 10:42Speaker 4: Yeah, you were doing that. They were really good.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Was it? It's my favourite show, man.
- 10:47Speaker 4: Yeah, it's very funny.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:48Speaker 5: Brilliant.
- 10:49Speaker 4: You've never watched it, Jase, don't lie.
- 10:51Speaker 2: I love it, Keezy.
- 10:53Speaker 6: Jesse Griffin, thanks for coming in, man.
- 10:55Speaker 4: Just trying to make you feel good. But it's not lies.
- 10:59Speaker 2: It's not lies.
- 11:00Speaker 4: Thanks.
- 11:00Speaker 2: Thank you. Unless you can prove it.
- 11:02Speaker 6: Lucky Luke is the name of the short film if
- 11:03Speaker 6: you'd like to see it. Yeah, Jesse Griffin, thanks for
- 11:06Speaker 6: coming in.
- 11:07Speaker 1: The Hodaki Big Show with Jace, Mike and Keezy. Tune
- 11:11Speaker 1: in weekdays at 4 on Radio Hodaki.
