- 1:00Speaker 4: Jeff BLAKEWELLDESPN dot com joins us on the ramos La
- 1:04Speaker 4: hot Line, recapping the week that was, weekend that was
- 1:08Speaker 4: in the NFL Draft and legging. We talked at him
- 1:11Speaker 4: schefter earlier. I'm gonna I asked him this question. I
- 1:14Speaker 4: want to ask you on paper, on paper, after selecting today, barn,
- 1:20Speaker 4: you see what they did in the off season. The
- 1:23Speaker 4: starting lineup defensively for the Broncos, true or false? Is
- 1:27Speaker 4: the best on paper in the NFL?
- 1:31Speaker 5: Well, you know, I don't have a wall in front
- 1:33Speaker 5: of me, but it's in that it's on the podium
- 1:36Speaker 5: for sure.
- 1:36Speaker 6: If that's yeah, if that makes sense.
- 1:39Speaker 5: You know, they have the Defensive Player of the Year,
- 1:42Speaker 5: so that's a great place to start. But they are
- 1:45Speaker 5: one of the best, one of the one, two or
- 1:47Speaker 5: three best lineups on paper. But you know, you need
- 1:51Speaker 5: Benito to have another big year. You need you need
- 1:55Speaker 5: to be healthy, you need all of that stuff. But yeah,
- 1:57Speaker 5: they they're definitely. I mean in the advanced metrics they
- 2:04Speaker 5: were number one last year by a wide margin, even
- 2:08Speaker 5: with some of the Bobbles Stanza Defensive Player of the
- 2:12Speaker 5: Year and then you know barn makes them better. He's
- 2:16Speaker 5: playing in this defense from the moment he walks through
- 2:20Speaker 5: the door in a variety of ways, I think.
- 2:23Speaker 4: So you do think that starts outside Nickel, Like where
- 2:27Speaker 4: does he start doing that?
- 2:29Speaker 5: I think it's really when they get him in the
- 2:31Speaker 5: building and they start putting them through the paces. How
- 2:36Speaker 5: fast does he learn, you know, and and how much
- 2:39Speaker 5: can he handle? Initially? I think their plan is to
- 2:44Speaker 5: see how much they can give him, and they hope
- 2:49Speaker 5: and believe he'll digest it quickly, and I think he
- 2:52Speaker 5: will play in a variety of roles. But I think
- 2:55Speaker 5: it would be a mistake to say, at least until
- 2:57Speaker 5: I hear differently. Right now, the plan is to work
- 3:01Speaker 5: them at a lot of things, but we'll see if
- 3:03Speaker 5: that really transpires when he when he gets on the field.
- 3:07Speaker 2: I also think, Jeff, it's it's a choice they made
- 3:10Speaker 2: because this is where the modern day NFL is gone.
- 3:12Speaker 2: I mean gone other days when you stick with four
- 3:15Speaker 2: defensive backs. Most of the time it's five, sometimes it's six.
- 3:18Speaker 2: I mean we see teams flood the field with defensive backs,
- 3:21Speaker 2: and he could play at any position in that secondary.
- 3:24Speaker 5: Yeah, other than stir ten. He's he's likely a more
- 3:28Speaker 5: talented player than the guy who's playing.
- 3:31Speaker 6: You know, that's just a fact. The guy is an ultra.
- 3:35Speaker 5: Ultra talented player at at a variety of things. So yeah,
- 3:40Speaker 5: it's you know, gone ore the days where you just say, okay,
- 3:43Speaker 5: we got four corners, everything's good, or even two corners
- 3:47Speaker 5: and everything's good. That's I mean, we saw last year
- 3:50Speaker 5: Riley loss has hurt for a couple of weeks, and
- 3:53Speaker 5: the Cleveland Browns looked like the you know, the Heyday Chargers,
- 3:58Speaker 5: you know, going up and down the So you can't
- 4:02Speaker 5: have enough of them. And I know people, you know,
- 4:04Speaker 5: in this era of fantasy football, everybody wants offense, everybody
- 4:08Speaker 5: wants weapons and all that stuff. But I've said all along,
- 4:13Speaker 5: if the Broncos strategy is to win the division, oh,
- 4:19Speaker 5: they'll just be consistently better on offense than Mahomes and
- 4:22Speaker 5: the Chiefs. I just think that's a bad strategy over
- 4:25Speaker 5: the long term. I think it's a better idea to
- 4:29Speaker 5: go the other way, make life difficult on other offenses,
- 4:34Speaker 5: and then score as many as you can with the
- 4:37Speaker 5: guys you have on offense.
- 4:38Speaker 3: Jeff.
- 4:38Speaker 7: They were third in points per game and total points
- 4:42Speaker 7: given up, good stuff, top seven in terms of yards
- 4:46Speaker 7: per game, So they're already right there. I don't want
- 4:49Speaker 7: to be a Debbie downer here. You said one thing
- 4:51Speaker 7: that I completely agree with. Health is big for this team,
- 4:54Speaker 7: really big. They only had one major injury on the
- 4:56Speaker 7: defensive side last year. If you do see it regressing,
- 5:01Speaker 7: even with Baron as the first round pick, what does
- 5:05Speaker 7: that look like or is it just, hey man, they're
- 5:07Speaker 7: decimated by guys going down. Yeah.
- 5:11Speaker 5: I mean, obviously, if Sir Tan misses a lot of time,
- 5:14Speaker 5: that's a big chunk of the defensive plan, you know,
- 5:19Speaker 5: off the table. I think the key for them though, is,
- 5:23Speaker 5: you know, the guys up front, John Franklin, Meyers, Zach Allen,
- 5:27Speaker 5: all those guys, DJ Jones, they have to have the
- 5:31Speaker 5: kind of year they had last year. They all played
- 5:34Speaker 5: at the top of their abilities. I mean, I think
- 5:39Speaker 5: almost every defensive lineman they had had their best year personally,
- 5:45Speaker 5: you know, and most consistently good year personally of their careers.
- 5:49Speaker 6: So they need more of that.
- 5:51Speaker 5: I think if if there was a regression, to me,
- 5:54Speaker 5: it would come if if they could not win up front,
- 5:58Speaker 5: or if the two guys they sign in free agency
- 6:01Speaker 5: aren't healthy. I mean, Green Laws already hurt and he's
- 6:04Speaker 5: not even here yet, so or he's here, you know,
- 6:10Speaker 5: getting healthier, but you know he's got a thigh injury
- 6:12Speaker 5: that's going to keep him out of most of the
- 6:14Speaker 5: off season work, you know, and see you in training camp.
- 6:18Speaker 5: So that's the kind of stuff that gets you and
- 6:21Speaker 5: pulls you back from where you think you're going to be.
- 6:23Speaker 4: I know you hate these, like k predict the futures
- 6:27Speaker 4: type of questions, but in your best estimation, the bigger
- 6:30Speaker 4: impact on the offense this year will be Evan Ingram
- 6:32Speaker 4: or RJ.
- 6:33Speaker 5: Harvey, potentially Harvey, you know, I think, but again it's
- 6:40Speaker 5: are they going to commit to it.
- 6:42Speaker 6: I think it's all great.
- 6:43Speaker 5: We spent a ton of time talking about running backs
- 6:46Speaker 5: and who fits and who would be good in the draft,
- 6:48Speaker 5: and but if they don't hand them the ball, it
- 6:50Speaker 5: doesn't matter, you know. And coming down the stretch last
- 6:55Speaker 5: year the second half of the season, every week he
- 6:58Speaker 5: would say they have to find more in the run game,
- 7:01Speaker 5: and then they wouldn't give the guys the ball, and
- 7:03Speaker 5: then you know, Estimate is a healthy inactive in the
- 7:08Speaker 5: playoff game. So you know, I think it's more up
- 7:11Speaker 5: to them. I think Ingram is a great signing for
- 7:16Speaker 5: the money they got him for, and he fits their offense.
- 7:18Speaker 5: It's just he's not much of a run after the
- 7:21Speaker 5: catch guy, and I think that's the issue. He'll be
- 7:25Speaker 5: a high volume target, but it's how much impact do
- 7:29Speaker 5: they have after the catch?
- 7:31Speaker 6: So I think I think other players could have more impact.
- 7:35Speaker 5: I think Mims is poised for a big year if
- 7:39Speaker 5: they just commit from week one and just say he's
- 7:44Speaker 5: in the rotation and let him play. Because at the
- 7:47Speaker 5: end of the year, I thought you know Cortland Sutton
- 7:51Speaker 5: is their one, but I thought Mims was just the
- 7:54Speaker 5: most stressful for the defense.
- 7:58Speaker 6: At the end of the year.
- 8:00Speaker 5: Real impact, and they need real impact because this year
- 8:05Speaker 5: will be very difficult for bo Nicks. Your second year
- 8:09Speaker 5: is brutal because a whole bunch of defensive coaches have
- 8:13Speaker 5: spent a whole bunch of time just dismantling your game
- 8:18Speaker 5: on video and they just do. They want to do
- 8:21Speaker 5: nothing more than just to give you tons of things
- 8:24Speaker 5: you don't like.
- 8:26Speaker 2: How worried shabronco fans be about the health of Drake Greenlaw.
- 8:30Speaker 2: He's got that quad injury that occurred during offseason conditioning
- 8:34Speaker 2: whatever he was doing. How long is it gonna take?
- 8:36Speaker 2: Is this going to be a reoccurring issue?
- 8:40Speaker 6: You know?
- 8:40Speaker 5: The way it's been explained to me vic is they're
- 8:44Speaker 5: not like immensely concerned, but it is basically a cu
- 8:48Speaker 5: in training camp type injury for practicing in the defense.
- 8:53Speaker 5: Like I we will not see him in OTAs or
- 8:56Speaker 5: mini camp or any of that.
- 8:59Speaker 6: I don't think. I don't think that's the plan right now,
- 9:02Speaker 6: So you know, August.
- 9:05Speaker 5: I think and even then it may be a slower
- 9:07Speaker 5: wind up to come in But the way it's been
- 9:11Speaker 5: explained to me is they did not expect him to
- 9:13Speaker 5: miss any regular season time with this at all.
- 9:17Speaker 2: It's just not a good sign. The last thing you
- 9:19Speaker 2: want is damage goods for a guy who's coming off injury.
- 9:22Speaker 1: No.
- 9:22Speaker 5: I mean when they sign these two guys, we've always said,
- 9:25Speaker 5: if you know, you know, they got them for the
- 9:28Speaker 5: contracts they did because they're coming off injuries. They wouldn't
- 9:32Speaker 5: have been able to sign these guys at the amounts
- 9:36Speaker 5: they did if they were had been totally healthy. So
- 9:39Speaker 5: they benefited from that, but they also need it. They
- 9:43Speaker 5: need good fortune moving forward or it really tempers, you know,
- 9:48Speaker 5: the impact of their signing, and they're a little thin
- 9:51Speaker 5: at linebacker if green Law isn't going to be healthy
- 9:54Speaker 5: all year. They did not really. I thought they would
- 9:58Speaker 5: go there with one of the picks at some point,
- 10:01Speaker 5: and they didn't really go inside linebacker, uh anywhere.
- 10:05Speaker 4: I know you're a football encyclopedia, and Jeff Lagwold is
- 10:08Speaker 4: mister no days off. You're always up to something with
- 10:10Speaker 4: your job. But are you gonna park your butt on
- 10:12Speaker 4: the couch tonight with two screens up and watch the
- 10:15Speaker 4: Abs and the Nuggets.
- 10:17Speaker 6: I will do my very best to do that.
- 10:19Speaker 7: You mean to do your very best? What does that mean?
- 10:22Speaker 5: Well, there's been a couple of news items happened in
- 10:24Speaker 5: the last couple of days, like what so I've I've
- 10:27Speaker 5: been chasing a few things.
- 10:29Speaker 6: The very tragic. Uh oh yeah, totally. Yeah, Yeah, that's
- 10:33Speaker 6: that's Uh, that's a terrible thing.
- 10:35Speaker 2: But anyway, Jeff, speaking of you, you're speaking of the
- 10:39Speaker 2: l Way Jeff Spurbek situation. Uh, Jeff, Jeff's the longtime
- 10:43Speaker 2: marketing agent for for John that their their buddies. I
- 10:47Speaker 2: got to know Jeff pretty well when he was in town.
- 10:49Speaker 2: He was working with that seven sellers and right, I can't.
- 10:53Speaker 2: I don't have the words for what occurred. Now. The
- 10:57Speaker 2: investigation is looming and all that business, But I don't
- 11:01Speaker 2: know how much more you've uncovered. There is there any
- 11:04Speaker 2: other new news with that.
- 11:06Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't think anybody, you know, no agency, or
- 11:11Speaker 5: body of folks I've talked to, believes there's anything.
- 11:17Speaker 6: Going on.
- 11:17Speaker 5: It's it's just such a a freak accident of sorts.
- 11:22Speaker 5: I mean, it's you know, it's very common for if
- 11:27Speaker 5: someone dies that they have to go through the investigation
- 11:30Speaker 5: to see what happened and what occurred, so that that's
- 11:33Speaker 5: all that's happening now.
- 11:34Speaker 6: But what a what a horrible thing.
- 11:36Speaker 5: You know, they're at an event and enjoying life and
- 11:40Speaker 5: then you know a few.
- 11:42Speaker 6: Seconds or all.
- 11:43Speaker 5: That is the difference between that and it's just when
- 11:48Speaker 5: you do those stories and you know some of the
- 11:50Speaker 5: people involved.
- 11:51Speaker 6: It's it's just a you know, the family, it's a
- 11:54Speaker 6: terrible think. You're right about that.
- 11:56Speaker 4: Well, Jeff always going to talk to you think for
- 11:57Speaker 4: the breakdown of the Broncos draft, and we'll talk to.
- 11:59Speaker 2: You next week.
- 12:00Speaker 6: Thanks Palace, We'll see it.
- 12:01Speaker 4: Jeff Leeguweld ESPN dot com. All Conversations with Leggy brought

- 12:07Speaker 4: e W Local sixty eight. Start with a job and
- 12:10Speaker 4: with a career.
- 12:12Speaker 7: Just to finish up on that. It's really sad, and guys,
- 12:18Speaker 7: we've all been there a billion times. I mean, it
- 12:21Speaker 7: could happen to anybody. Scary and sad, just a bummer
