Transcript
- 0:00So you've heard it in church. You've seen it online.
- 0:04Maybe you've even said it yourself. It sounds biblical, but is it?
- 0:10Welcome to Jesus Never Said That. It's a special series from Have Faith, Let It Begin.
- 0:15I'm Angel Santana, and together, we're gonna be going beyond the quotes,
- 0:19cliches, and assumptions to discover what God's word actually says.
- 0:25So grab your Bible, bring your questions, because Have Faith,
- 0:29Let It Begin, starts right now.
- 0:37Welcome to Have Faith, Let It Begin. This is Ariel Santana.
- 0:41Can you believe I'm seven years old already? I'm old enough now to introduce my dad.
- 0:47Ladies and gentlemen, your host, my dad, Angel Santana.
- 0:54Two thousand came and the spark was lit. A testimony raw, it wouldn't quit.
- 1:25Welcome back, everybody. Let me know if you have heard this one before.
- 1:29Cleanliness is next to godliness.
- 1:33Say that one three times fast, right? Come on. Some of us didn't learn this
- 1:37one on a Sunday school lesson.
- 1:39We've learned it while somebody was telling us, go clean your room.
- 1:44Maybe your mother said it. Maybe your grandmother said it.
- 1:48Maybe you heard it at church. And after hearing it enough times,
- 1:52you might have thought, but well, I guess that's somewhere in the Bible, except it's not.
- 1:58See, there's no Bible verse that says cleanliness is next to godliness.
- 2:03Not before anybody listening decides this means they never have to clean their
- 2:08house again. Let's just be clear on that.
- 2:11Nice try, by the way. That's not what I'm saying. Please clean your room by
- 2:16all means and wash the dishes, take a shower, brush your teeth.
- 2:19Your family will then thank you. I know I would.
- 2:23But none of those things make you godly. And that's where today's conversation
- 2:27becomes much more important. Because Jesus.
- 2:33Actually warned about something that looked very clean, very polished,
- 2:38very religious on the outside. But inside, that was another story.
- 2:43Let's do the heart check. So here's today's heart check.
- 2:47How much energy do I spend making sure I look right compared with making sure
- 2:54my heart is right? Think about that.
- 2:57Now, we know how to look the part. We can dress for church, carry the Bible,
- 3:02say the right words, post the inspirational quotes, smile, shake hands,
- 3:09tell everybody I'm blessed.
- 3:11And sometimes we can do all of that while something completely different is happening inside.
- 3:18Anger, jealousy, bitterness, pride,
- 3:23unforgiveness, judgment, secret struggles, and nobody else, nobody else,
- 3:30well, nobody sees it because the outside looks great.
- 3:34So maybe today's question isn't, is my life clean?
- 3:39Maybe it's, what does God see when he looks beneath the surface?
- 3:45Now, where did this saying come from? Cleanliness is next to godliness.
- 3:50It's not scripture. The phrase became especially well known through John Wisely,
- 3:57the 18th century preacher and founder of the Methodist movement,
- 4:01although similar ideas exist before him.
- 4:04You can tell I'm back in school, but Wesley wasn't quoting a Bible verse.
- 4:09And somehow over generations, they say the saying became one of those phrases
- 4:16people began assuming came directly from Scripture.
- 4:22And that's exactly why we're doing this episode and this series.
- 4:25Something can sound old. Something can sound religious.
- 4:29Something can even come from a respected Christian leader. And still,
- 4:34that doesn't make it Scripture.
- 4:37We have to know the difference. And trust me, by being in school,
- 4:40I'm learning the difference.
- 4:42So I'm not here preaching to you and telling you what's right and wrong.
- 4:45I'm just telling you the things that I've come across and say,
- 4:47I got to share this with you.
- 4:49Let's go into that. But doesn't the Bible talk about cleanliness? Absolutely, it does.
- 4:55The Old Testament contains many instructions involving washing,
- 5:00purification, and ceremonial cleanliness.
- 5:03But those practices had specific purposes within Israel's.
- 5:10Covenant life and worship. They weren't teaching. If your house is spotless, you're closer to God.
- 5:17That's not what they were teaching. And.
- 5:22When Jesus arrives, he repeatedly takes the conversation deeper because religious
- 5:28leaders sometimes become or became so focused on,
- 5:32external rules that they missed what was happening inside the human heart. And Jesus called it out.
- 5:38So what Jesus actually said, if you go to Matthew 23, verses 25 through 26, this is what Jesus says.
- 5:47You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside there are full of greed and self-indulgence.
- 5:55Then he says, First, clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.
- 6:04Wow! Jesus isn't talking about dishes.
- 6:08He's talking about people. He's saying you can polish the outside.
- 6:14You can make everything look beautiful. You can convince everybody around you
- 6:18that you've got it together.
- 6:21But God sees inside the cup. And then Jesus gets even stronger.
- 6:27In Matthew 23, verse 27, he compares some of the religious leaders to whitewashed tombs.
- 6:34Beautiful on the outside, but inside filled with death.
- 6:38That's one of the strongest images Jesus ever used.
- 6:42Because apparently God isn't impressed by appearances when the heart underneath them is unhealthy.
- 6:50The real source of cleanliness, let's talk about that. Jesus takes this even further.
- 6:58In Mark 7, the religious leaders were concerned because some of the Jesus disciples
- 7:04were eating without following traditional ceremonial hand-washing practices.
- 7:09And Jesus redirects the whole conversation. You see, he explains that what truly
- 7:15defiles a person isn't simply something coming from the outside.
- 7:20In Mark 7 verse 21, now Jesus says, for it is from within, out of a person's
- 7:28heart that evil thoughts come.
- 7:32Then he lists things like greed, deceit, envy, pride, and even other sins.
- 7:40In other words, the biggest mess in my life might not be the one everybody can see.
- 7:46I can clean my house. I can wash my hands. I can put on my best clothes,
- 7:51but soap can't wash away pride.
- 7:54A vacuum can't remove bitterness. Laundry detergent can't clean jealousy.
- 8:00And no amount of outward appearance can replace a heart being transformed by God.
- 8:06We heard this with David because David understood this. Remember David's prayer in Psalm 51 verse 10?
- 8:13Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
- 8:20David doesn't pray. God make, he doesn't say, God, make me look better.
- 8:25No, David didn't say that. He says, create in me a pure heart.
- 8:30That's where transformation begins, inside. Because Christianity isn't cosmetic.
- 8:36Jesus isn't interested in simply making us look religious.
- 8:42He wants us to transform us. He wants to transform us. Let me give you a personal reflection.
- 8:50This one makes me think about how easy it is to worry about what other people see.
- 8:54What we all do, what all, well, let's better phrase that. We all do it.
- 9:00We want people to think we're doing okay. And sometimes when somebody asks,
- 9:04how are you? We automatically say, I'm good.
- 9:08Even when we're nowhere close to God.
- 9:12Sometimes we work really hard to keep the outside polish because we're afraid
- 9:17of what might happen if somebody sees the mess inside.
- 9:21But here's something I've learned. God already sees it. There's no point pretending with him.
- 9:28God sees the frustration. God sees the questions.
- 9:32And God sees the anger. God sees the temptation. God sees the things we're embarrassed about.
- 9:38And he doesn't say, come back when you've cleaned yourself up.
- 9:43No. He invites us to bring the mess to him. And that's grace.
- 9:48God does the cleaning. Remember that. And this is important,
- 9:53especially in Christianity.
- 9:55Christianity isn't clean yourself up so God will love you.
- 10:01No. The gospel is God loves you, comes to you, and begins transforming you. Let me repeat that.
- 10:09God loves you, comes to you and begins transforming you.
- 10:14There's a huge difference. Sometimes people think I need to fix myself before I come back to God.
- 10:20I need to get my life together first. I need to stop struggling first.
- 10:26But if we could completely clean ourselves from the inside out,
- 10:31why would we need grace? Why would we need a savior?
- 10:35We come to Jesus because we can't do that work by ourselves.
- 10:40So how do we live this out?
- 10:43First, stop performing. You don't have to convince God that you're okay.
- 10:48He already knows what you're struggling.
- 10:51Second, ask God to show you what's inside.
- 10:55Psalms 137, excuse me, 139, verse 23 through 24.
- 11:01Search me, God, and know my heart. See if there's any offensive way in me.
- 11:08That's a brave prayer. because you're giving God permission to point something out.
- 11:14And third, deal with the inside before obsessing over the outside.
- 11:20Maybe you look fine publicly. Maybe there's bitterness you need to release.
- 11:24Maybe there's somebody you need to forgive.
- 11:27Maybe there's pride you need to confront.
- 11:30And maybe there's something you need to confess.
- 11:34Fourth, give other people grace. That's a tough one, right?
- 11:39Give other people grace. Because once I realize how much work God is still doing
- 11:44inside of me, I become a lot less interested in pretending I'm better than everyone else.
- 11:50Here's your faith challenge for the week. And no, I'm not going to tell you
- 11:53to clean your house. Although if it needs it, go ahead and do it.
- 11:58Instead, find five quiet minutes. Five. No phone, no television,
- 12:03no distractions, and pray this.
- 12:06Search me, God, and know my heart.
- 12:10Then sit quietly, ask God, is there something inside of me I've been ignoring?
- 12:18Maybe it's resentment. Maybe it's pride. Maybe it's jealousy.
- 12:22And maybe it's an apology that you've been avoiding. Maybe it's something nobody else knows about.
- 12:29Don't run from it. Bring it to God because today's challenge isn't about cleaning your surroundings.
- 12:37It's about allowing God into the rooms of your heart that you've kept closed.
- 12:43Amen. Heavenly Father, we send and we send our love to you. we spend so much
- 12:48time worrying about what people see, we try to look strong.
- 12:52We try to look successful. Sometimes we even try to look spiritual,
- 12:56but you see beyond appearances.
- 13:00You know our hearts and you know the places that we're struggling.
- 13:04You know the bitterness we haven't released.
- 13:07I struggle with that one. You notice that one, haven't released.
- 13:10The fears we haven't admitted, the pride we don't want to confront,
- 13:15the wounds we're still carrying.
- 13:17So today we pray the words of David, create in us clean hearts, O God. Yes.
- 13:26Search us. Reveal what needs your healing. Reveal what needs your correction.
- 13:30Reveal what needs your forgiveness.
- 13:33Help us stop performing and start becoming.
- 13:37We don't want to simply look like followers of Jesus. We want to become more like Jesus.
- 13:43Transform us from the inside out and give us grace for everyone else who's still being transformed too.
- 13:49In Jesus' name we pray, amen. So what's today's takeaway?
- 13:53Is cleanliness next to godliness? not according to the Bible.
- 13:58Cleanliness can be healthy.
- 14:00Order can be good. Taking care of ourselves and our surroundings can absolutely be wise.
- 14:07But none of these things make us righteous before God.
- 14:11Jesus repeatedly pointed beyond outward appearances to the condition of the
- 14:15heart. So here's today's takeaway.
- 14:18God isn't looking for the spotless performance. He's looking for a surrendered heart.
- 14:25Don't spend your entire life polishing the outside while ignoring what's happening
- 14:28in the inside. Let Jesus work from the inside out.
- 14:35And we'll talk about that more. I had to think there. So let me close this.
- 14:39This has been an episode of Jesus Never Said That. It's episode seven.
- 14:44And it's our series from Half Faith Let It Begin. Remember that if it sounds
- 14:50good, it might even sound Christian.
- 14:54But is it really actually in the Bible? Is it biblical?
- 14:59Well, don't assume something is scripture simply because you've heard Christians repeat it.
- 15:04Open your Bible, read the context, ask questions like I've been doing.
- 15:09And remember, God isn't just interested in how our lives look.
- 15:13He's interested in what we're becoming.
- 15:16On tomorrow's episode, the next episode, episode eight, we're tackling one that
- 15:21might surprise a lot of people.
- 15:23You've seen it in the paintings, you've heard it in sermons,
- 15:26and you've probably seen it in Christmas cards.
- 15:29The lion will lie down with the lamb. Beautiful image. There's just one problem.
- 15:36The Bible doesn't actually say that. Wait, what?
- 15:40There is a prophecy in Isaiah about animals living peacefully together?
- 15:47But someone, wait a minute, somewhere along the way, one of the animals got switched.
- 15:52So what does Isaiah actually say? And more importantly, what is the prophecy
- 15:57really pointing toward?
- 15:58We'll find out on episode eight of Jesus Never Said That.
- 16:02The lion will lie down with the lamb. Hmm. See tomorrow because if it sounds
- 16:07good, it might even sound Christian, but is it actually biblical?
- 16:12Have faith. Let it begin.
