Transcript
- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Swahili with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Episode 176 — can you believe it? Lucas: I know. We've come a long way since 'Jambo' and 'Habari.' Today we're revisiting something we touched on before, but with a twist — ordering chai. Luna: Oh, I love chai. But I'm picky — I like it with milk, but not too sweet. Lucas: Perfect. That's exactly what we'll practice. So, the basic phrase you already know: 'Nataka chai.' Let's say it together. Luna: Nataka chai. Lucas: Good. 'Nataka chai' means 'I want tea.' But you can add details. For example, if you want it with milk, say 'Chai ya maziwa, tafadhali.' Luna: Chai ya maziwa, tafadhali. That's 'Tea with milk, please.' Lucas: Exactly. 'Maziwa' means milk. So 'ya maziwa' means 'of milk' or 'with milk.' Your turn to model it. Luna: Nataka chai ya maziwa, tafadhali. Lucas: Beautiful. Now, what if you want it without milk? You say 'Chai bila maziwa, tafadhali.' Luna: Chai bila maziwa, tafadhali. 'Bila' means 'without.' Lucas: Right. So you could say 'Nataka chai bila maziwa.' Let's hear that. Luna: Nataka chai bila maziwa, tafadhali. Lucas: Good. And if it's a hot day, you might want iced tea. 'Chai baridi' means 'cold tea.' So 'Nataka chai baridi, tafadhali.' Luna: Nataka chai baridi, tafadhali. That's 'I want cold tea, please.' Lucas: Exactly. Now, let's put it all together in a little scene. Imagine you walk into a café. The server says 'Habari, unataka nini?' — 'Hello, what do you want?' You say...? Luna: Nataka chai ya maziwa, tafadhali. Lucas: Perfect. And then you can add 'Asante sana' — 'Thank you very much.' Luna: Asante sana. Lucas: You're a natural. Now, before we practice more, I want to mention something. This podcast is ad-free — we deliberately don't run ads. If Fexingo has been helping you make real progress with Swahili, and you'd like to support that choice, you can at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: Yeah, it's a small way to keep the show going and free for everyone. I love that we keep it clean. Lucas: Totally. Okay, back to chai. Let's try a quick drill. I'll say a preference in English, and you say it in Swahili. Ready? Luna: Ready. Lucas: I want tea with milk. Luna: Nataka chai ya maziwa. Lucas: I want cold tea. Luna: Nataka chai baridi. Lucas: I want tea without milk. Luna: Nataka chai bila maziwa. Lucas: Excellent. Now let's reverse. I'll say Swahili, you translate. 'Nataka chai baridi, tafadhali.' Luna: I want cold tea, please. Lucas: Chai ya maziwa, tafadhali. Luna: Tea with milk, please. Lucas: Chai bila maziwa. Luna: Tea without milk. Lucas: You've got it. Now, let's hear a full sentence from you — order a chai with milk and say thank you. Luna: Nataka chai ya maziwa, tafadhali. Asante sana. Lucas: That's it. Practice that a few times before your next café visit. And remember, you can mix and match — chai baridi ya maziwa? Why not. Luna: Oh, I'll try that. Thanks Lucas. And thanks to all of you for listening. Practice these phrases and we'll see you next time. Lucas: Kwa heri. Goodbye from Fexingo.
