- 0:16Speaker 2: And Jamie McKay, host of the Countries with Us.
- 0:18Speaker 3: Hello Jamie, Hello Heather. When you've got yolo Wayne Langford on,
- 0:22Speaker 3: ask him if he's going to stand for labor in
- 0:25Speaker 3: the current election in the West Coast Tasman seat.
- 0:30Speaker 2: West Coast Tasman Seat. Labor done, Consider it done. But
- 0:34Speaker 2: now you've given him a warning because he will be
- 0:35Speaker 2: listening to you right now.
- 0:36Speaker 3: Well, no, no, I mean it was all the talk
- 0:39Speaker 3: at the National LAMB Day barbecue. Look, I think he's
- 0:42Speaker 3: been to be honest, very capable bloke, smart guy. I
- 0:46Speaker 3: think he's been courted by several parties. But you know,
- 0:49Speaker 3: I call it what is at at the moment, the sleepover,
- 0:52Speaker 3: the pajama party, the love and with Federated Farmers and Labor.
- 0:57Speaker 3: This has been going for two or three years, and
- 0:59Speaker 3: to be fair to Joe Luxton, who's their agg spokesperson,
- 1:03Speaker 3: I think it's positive that they're making overtures towards the
- 1:06Speaker 3: farming community. And I'll be into rested to see what
- 1:09Speaker 3: comes out of the wash from the pajama.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Party in the pajama buddy, Lord of have we got
- 1:14Speaker 2: too much grass in the country.
- 1:17Speaker 3: Ah Well, there's an old saying here. There're a farmer
- 1:20Speaker 3: with grass and his paddock and a dollar in his
- 1:22Speaker 3: pocket can be a dangerous beast. And it's kind of
- 1:25Speaker 3: what's happening in the meat industry at the moment. And
- 1:27Speaker 3: you know, it's all well, it's nearly all good news
- 1:30Speaker 3: unless you're a meat process. So they're steal it, squealing
- 1:33Speaker 3: like a stock peg at the moment because they reckon
- 1:35Speaker 3: that with the current prices is unsustainable. But because especially
- 1:39Speaker 3: in the North Island where you were getting dry before Christmas,
- 1:42Speaker 3: we've had rain, far too much rain in some areas,
- 1:45Speaker 3: But basically the whole country is good in terms of grass.
- 1:49Speaker 3: So farmers, what they're doing here there is they're hanging
- 1:52Speaker 3: on to stock longer. Why wouldn't you, at eleven dollars
- 1:55Speaker 3: a kilo for lamb, put another couple of kilos on
- 1:57Speaker 3: your lamb. It goes on to your bottom line, so
- 2:00Speaker 3: that the meat companies are having a real battle. They're
- 2:03Speaker 3: having to work short weeks. There is procurement pressure on
- 2:07Speaker 3: to get the stock that's available just to give you
- 2:10Speaker 3: the numbers up till the end of January, we'd only
- 2:13Speaker 3: killed six and a quarter million lambs of a total
- 2:18Speaker 3: of seventeen million that's available, so we've obviously had nearly
- 2:22Speaker 3: a month's killing since then or processing. I better b
- 2:24Speaker 3: TC on that one. So we're not even halfway through
- 2:28Speaker 3: the season yet. Look, the forecast is good. They dropped
- 2:30Speaker 3: the schedule a wee bit last week by ten cents
- 2:33Speaker 3: of kilo, the first decline since Christmas. They don't normally,
- 2:37Speaker 3: I mean they normally do this. Once we get past Christmas,
- 2:40Speaker 3: the lamb schedule drops. But forecasting is it for to
- 2:44Speaker 3: maybe call its heels a webit go down a weebit.
- 2:47Speaker 3: But then we get near at the end of the season,
- 2:49Speaker 3: that pressure comes on again for our stock procurement and
- 2:53Speaker 3: we have a good old fashioned procurement war amongst the
- 2:55Speaker 3: meat companies.
- 2:56Speaker 2: It sounds great. I love it. Thank you very much, Jamie,
- 2:58Speaker 2: look up yourself, Jammie McKay, Host of the Country.
