Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_01: This episode is with Dan Trosper, who owns Seven Peaks Soccer Training in Novi, Michigan.
- 0:07SPEAKER_01: He started his own training company about four years ago.
- 0:11SPEAKER_01: And like me, we we share a lot in common in terms of running your own facility, uh, running your own soccer training company, and we talk about you know player development.
- 0:25SPEAKER_01: We he also has a unique perspective because he has a high-level uh daughter who just won a national title with the Michigan Hawks.
- 0:35SPEAKER_01: Uh, she's on the 2010 ECNL team.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: And so we we take a deep dive on you know what he offers throughout his training company as well as just talking soccer.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: And I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I did.
- 0:52SPEAKER_01: And please, if you don't already, please subscribe, like, uh, follow, and share this with everybody that you think would get something out of it.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: I hate soccer.
- 1:10SPEAKER_01: You know, I love guys that do what you do because that's what I did for 10 years in Buffalo, and I know I know what it's like to run my own facility and my own training company, but the biggest difference that I see here versus where I was in Buffalo is the support from clubs.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: Because you see guys like nationals partnering with Bird, right?
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: Or you see um, I mean, your previous connections with Jags and whatnot, and whoever.
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: And we don't have that in Buffalo.
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: It's all the word of mouth is really good in Buffalo, but outside of just the good families, very little club support.
- 2:05SPEAKER_01: Very little.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: And that's why that's part of the reason.
- 2:10SPEAKER_01: One, I was ready, I was burnt out.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: I was ready to close up shop because I didn't have the performance part of it of the business that you do.
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: I only did the technical training, and I had a couple staff members.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: One was very consistent and loyal, other ones just came and go just because of other job opportunities, or they wanted to break off and start their own thing.
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: So the ins and outs of just navigating that became a heavy lift, and then I split the space in Buffalo, and then I had an opportunity where he took the entire lease, and I'm like, okay, I'm gonna go to Michigan and focus on the podcast and talk to heavy hitters.
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: Awesome.
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: Because nobody would talk.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: I got to a point where nobody would talk to me in Buffalo.
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: I had to beg and beg and beg.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: Like, I I I've asked, like, do you beat coach on?
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: Nothing.
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: And then like that, I get Lewis Robinson on.
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: I was like, that's that's the guy who beats you every year, and he'll talk he'll talk to me.
- 3:13SPEAKER_01: But it's just pissing me off, you know.
- 3:15SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I think I think Michigan has that familiarity with all the guys and coaches that have been around for a long time, right?
- 3:22SPEAKER_04: Yeah we all want to be super connected and we all really want to help each other out.
- 3:27SPEAKER_04: And I think, you know, over time it starts to get bigger and bigger and bigger, and we all know that it's getting bigger.
- 3:33SPEAKER_04: I think we really focus on what our impact is with all these kids.
- 3:40SPEAKER_04: Yeah, right.
- 3:41SPEAKER_04: And are we really focusing on what's best for them and are we really putting some time into that, right?
- 3:47SPEAKER_04: From a standpoint of making kids more confident and consistent and offering opportunities like this where we can start to outsource and we can start to help each other.
- 3:55SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 3:56SPEAKER_04: Right, which is I think that's a good value for everybody.
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: It takes i I feel like it takes coaches and I guess areas a while to realize, you know what, we as a club can't do it alone.
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: They need extra training, they need extra support because we're providing three or four days a week, and it's all team fa like focused or tactic tactically focused, and part of the development part gets thrown away.
- 4:26SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 4:27SPEAKER_04: I think you know, technique is is a monster, and I think the way we all perceive it is different.
- 4:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 4:33SPEAKER_04: Right?
- 4:33SPEAKER_04: And everyone has like a front foot, a back foot, a Dutch way, a German way, uh, you know, any any perspective you would want to put a spin on it, right?
- 4:41SPEAKER_04: And I think the more that we spend collaborating and being a little bit more vulnerable about what technique really is, I think we get a little bit better.
- 4:49SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 4:50SPEAKER_04: Right when we're talking to kids, are we talking to kids about what they're learning and how they're learning?
- 4:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 4:54SPEAKER_04: And I think that has a huge impact on you know how we deliver it and how they perceive it and how they consistently learn.
- 5:00SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 5:01SPEAKER_04: Right?
- 5:01SPEAKER_04: So we want to make sure that's all positive, right?
- 5:05SPEAKER_04: We want to make sure it's all growing in the perspective that they're gaining confidence.
- 5:11SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 5:12SPEAKER_04: I think that's a huge piece for us.
- 5:13SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 5:14SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 5:14SPEAKER_04: And I think if we collaborate, I think that's a big monster over and over again, right?
- 5:18SPEAKER_04: What's wrong with being wrong once in a while?
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: I mean, and being vulnerable, that's basically what this uh started as.
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: I just wanted, okay, so when I started in 2015, now all those kids are in college, and not all obviously not all of them, but a lot of them started going to college, and I just wanted to start talking to them about their recruiting process because I didn't really know how what all went into the recruiting process, and especially in in today's, you know, soccer climate and and college sport climate.
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: So I just wanted to have them on, be vulnerable, tell us your story.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: And I posted like one of the first ones, and I got messages from my younger player saying, I learned more from that one-hour podcast than I did from what my club is teaching me about recruiting.
- 6:14SPEAKER_01: It's like, okay, well, that tells me something that uh and then and then once I started having coaches and uh club directors on, then it just went crazy.
- 6:27SPEAKER_01: And I mean, and being vulnerable, but you said what technique really is, and that's I find that a hilarious conversation because it used to be where tech everybody thinks that technique is just moves and stepovers and scissors.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: It's like, no, it is not, it is being able is if I were if I were to talk about technique, I want you to be so good on the ball that everything around you is so slow, but you're able to play quick and solve problems.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: Somebody uh years ago explained it to me, like it was like the matrix when when everything started to click and he was able to just stop bullets and it's all going by you like a thousand miles per hour.
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: That's what I want my players to be on the ball.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: Because if you're not good on the ball, everything's going a thousand miles per hour, and you don't know what the hell just happened, and everything's whizen by you.
- 7:30SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 7:31SPEAKER_04: I think a lot of that technical aspects that you know as coach, right?
- 7:35SPEAKER_04: Going through those small sided games and providing these options for these kids to solve those problems while they're doing technique, right?
- 7:42SPEAKER_04: That's or techniques that they've been taught, right?
- 7:45SPEAKER_04: So build up something where they're successful, right?
- 7:49SPEAKER_04: With no pressure, add some pressure with whatever type of line that you're working with, right?
- 7:55SPEAKER_04: And then have them sell them, solve those problems over and over and over again, right?
- 7:59SPEAKER_04: And they're gonna fail.
- 8:00SPEAKER_04: Yeah, there's nothing wrong with that, right?
- 8:02SPEAKER_04: We just want to put them in those situations over and over again, right?
- 8:05SPEAKER_04: But I think sometimes we get into these environments where it's like, okay, we've got these rondos, we've got we've got to start with this activation, we've got to do exactly this format.
- 8:17SPEAKER_04: And it's not that that's wrong, because there has to be formality for these big clubs, right?
- 8:21SPEAKER_04: I think that's really important.
- 8:23SPEAKER_04: I think there just has to be a direction with things, right?
- 8:26SPEAKER_04: Where you're becoming your own coach, you have some style, you have a personality, right?
- 8:31SPEAKER_04: You can't go into each session and just be bland, kids buy into you.
- 8:35SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 8:36SPEAKER_04: Kids have to have a buy-in.
- 8:37SPEAKER_04: Yeah, right.
- 8:38SPEAKER_04: They have to trust you.
- 8:40SPEAKER_04: If they don't trust you, they don't feel safe, and then where are they gonna go?
- 8:43SPEAKER_04: They're not gonna they're not gonna explore being creative, right?
- 8:46SPEAKER_04: So I think you have to have that.
- 8:48SPEAKER_04: And I I think while we do this, and what we recognize is obviously club coaches have a tough hand, right?
- 8:54SPEAKER_04: It's a lot of work, right?
- 8:56SPEAKER_04: Right?
- 8:56SPEAKER_04: You've got to be able to do all the video analysis, you've got to do your club stuff, you gotta do whatever you're doing with your day-to-day.
- 9:03SPEAKER_04: Sometimes you have four to five teams, we all know this, right?
- 9:06SPEAKER_04: Right?
- 9:06SPEAKER_04: But I think when we come in here, I think we can be in a little bit of a different place, right?
- 9:12SPEAKER_04: Where we're focused on the development of their technique, where they can feel the trust from us a little bit easier because it's an open, open platform.
- 9:21SPEAKER_04: I'm not reporting to anybody, right?
- 9:23SPEAKER_04: That's not my job.
- 9:25SPEAKER_04: You can come here, get a service, right?
- 9:27SPEAKER_04: Our service is to provide technique.
- 9:28SPEAKER_04: We're gonna leave you with something that's positive, getting confidence, right?
- 9:32SPEAKER_04: You keep going, right?
- 9:34SPEAKER_04: I think those club coaches, they just can't be everything to everyone, right?
- 9:38SPEAKER_04: And I think that's a must.
- 9:39SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 9:40SPEAKER_04: Because that's how they feel frequently.
- 9:41SPEAKER_04: I think that's when I was in club, that's definitely how I felt, right?
- 9:45SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 9:45SPEAKER_04: That was a that was a tough piece of the puzzle.
- 9:47SPEAKER_01: When did you last coach club?
- 9:50SPEAKER_04: Oh, that was probably like four, four or five years ago.
- 9:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's a great, good experience.
- 9:54SPEAKER_04: I love it.
- 9:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:55SPEAKER_01: You know, I where were you coaching at?
- 9:57SPEAKER_04: I was coaching with the Michigan Jags.
- 9:59SPEAKER_04: Oh, you were with Jags?
- 10:00SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 10:00SPEAKER_04: I was with the uh beginning of the MLS next.
- 10:03SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 10:04SPEAKER_04: I went through the 06-07 group, made a great player pool.
- 10:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 10:08SPEAKER_04: And that was a great experience.
- 10:10SPEAKER_04: I don't take away from any of that.
- 10:11SPEAKER_04: And uh, I think that that travel and all of that started to wear me down a little bit as a coach, right?
- 10:17SPEAKER_04: And I starting to see a lot of that on some of my friends.
- 10:20SPEAKER_04: Like, how much can you travel?
- 10:21SPEAKER_04: How much can you be away from your family?
- 10:23SPEAKER_04: I don't think people really understand, parents understand how much coaches are away from their families in order to provide service for them for that club that they're working for, right?
- 10:33SPEAKER_04: And I think that's a big monster for coaches.
- 10:36SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 10:36SPEAKER_04: So that's why we started at Seven Peaks, right?
- 10:40SPEAKER_04: We got this going.
- 10:41SPEAKER_04: I was doing it for fun.
- 10:42SPEAKER_04: I love the game, want to be involved, you know, and it just kept growing and growing and growing.
- 10:48SPEAKER_04: How long has Seven Peaks been around?
- 10:50SPEAKER_04: So we initially started as Peak Training Company in 2021.
- 10:55SPEAKER_04: Right?
- 10:56SPEAKER_04: Started with a buddy, got it off the ground, um, we were renting space.
- 11:00SPEAKER_04: Eventually we moved into this house that we're in now, right?
- 11:04SPEAKER_04: In Nova, it's been great.
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: And then we rent in soccer mecca.
- 11:08SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and soccer mecca, no doubt.
- 11:10SPEAKER_04: Um, and then we re rebranded in 2025 to Seven Peaks.
- 11:15SPEAKER_04: Because I split off from my original partner that I was in business with.
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: What's the seven?
- 11:20SPEAKER_01: What's the seven?
- 11:22SPEAKER_04: You know, like the seven different the highest, the seven highest summits of the world.
- 11:28SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 11:28SPEAKER_04: Coming to a of each continent, right?
- 11:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah, maybe a little bit of retirement plan for myself, you know, trying to get after it a little bit.
- 11:35SPEAKER_04: So a little bit of a little hand in hand.
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: How I mean, you talk about the club game in terms of let's just say impact, right?
- 11:48SPEAKER_01: Think about how many kids you get to work with and Seven Peaks gets to work with, versus you as just a club coach.
- 11:56SPEAKER_01: And this is what always drove me was imagine if I stayed at Flash and I only got and they gave me two teams.
- 12:04SPEAKER_01: That might be a max of 40 players that I get to work with for an entire year.
- 12:10SPEAKER_01: Whereas playmaker, I could get up all the way to a hundred, uh uh uh more than a hundred, and I'm sure you guys are clearing a hundred per week.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: And and then it's not just from one organization, it's I mean, if we're to just talking about Michigan, you could you could have a session where it's Hawks, Jags, Liverpool, it's like it's every nationals, it's everybody.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: Right, right.
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: And not everybody gets that experience, and then you get to impact so many more players.
- 12:42SPEAKER_04: Absolutely, absolutely.
- 12:43SPEAKER_04: I think uh it's you know, we have such a deviation of different types of players that we receive, like in this Mecca, this 96 corridor, right, right, in Michigan.
- 12:54SPEAKER_04: If you don't know it, right, it's a monster, right?
- 12:56SPEAKER_04: You've got hawks, you've got jags, you've got wolves, you've got Plymouth Rain, Laza, Farmington Fury, Nova Lightning, right?
- 13:03SPEAKER_04: All these little feeders that are in there as well.
- 13:05SPEAKER_04: So I think it's become such a monster, but we're not always looking at the little guys, right?
- 13:12SPEAKER_04: And taking care of those guys that are sometimes behind.
- 13:15SPEAKER_04: Maybe it's let's per se that's a Nova Lightning or a Farmington Fury, and we're trying to do the extra things for the recreational clubs, right?
- 13:23SPEAKER_04: What we believe in the game, right?
- 13:25SPEAKER_04: I'm I'm gonna help them all.
- 13:27SPEAKER_04: As many kids as I possibly can.
- 13:28SPEAKER_04: Exactly.
- 13:29SPEAKER_04: I'm not stopping.
- 13:30SPEAKER_04: And so every time I see that lower level kid, I'm excited, right?
- 13:34SPEAKER_04: I want, I want to make sure that that kid can grow.
- 13:37SPEAKER_04: Because that kid to me, that's that's my business part, right?
- 13:41SPEAKER_04: So as we keep growing and growing and growing, I want to make that kid that's maybe no one thinks is the right kid.
- 13:46SPEAKER_04: I'm like, hey, you guys sleep.
- 13:49SPEAKER_01: Man, you uh you nailed it because okay.
- 13:55SPEAKER_01: You know what?
- 13:55SPEAKER_01: I'm just gonna pull out my phone.
- 13:57SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: So this morning, this is this morning, I just I just tweeted this out.
- 14:04SPEAKER_01: Hold on, let me pull it up.
- 14:07SPEAKER_01: So this guy, he's a really good follow.
- 14:10SPEAKER_01: It's advanced football academy, right?
- 14:13SPEAKER_01: And he posts this he goes, easiest way to judge a player's technical ability in under 10 seconds, look at the level of their juggling, right?
- 14:21SPEAKER_01: And this guy goes, It's not true.
- 14:23SPEAKER_01: Game IQ technique is a whole new ball game.
- 14:27SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, Okay, dude.
- 14:29SPEAKER_01: I go, we are talking youth players, man.
- 14:32SPEAKER_01: I've worked with over a thousand players over the last 10 years.
- 14:35SPEAKER_01: When I first get them, you'd be shocked at how many can't start juggling without using their hands.
- 14:41SPEAKER_01: They bend over and they pick up, and then I go, work with lower level players too, dude.
- 14:47SPEAKER_01: Not just the top 1%.
- 14:48SPEAKER_01: And what you just said nailed that.
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: It's like, it's like clubs only care about the top 1%.
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:56SPEAKER_01: Whereas uh trading companies like ours, we get that they don't you could have the best 2010 girl in the state, and then the very next hour, you might get the very, very worst 2010 in the state.
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: And then we, from our perspective, we get to see what the real gap is in the United States.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and people don't realize that because they're only talking about pep tactics.
- 15:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's like, dude, that doesn't compute.
- 15:24SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's tough.
- 15:25SPEAKER_04: It's tough, right?
- 15:26SPEAKER_04: Because you once you get to the top of it and you've been working the top for so long, it's hard to work backwards.
- 15:31SPEAKER_04: And I think if you understand what the top's composed of, it is it is the bottom.
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 15:36SPEAKER_04: Right, and it is those kids that you find that consistently work their way out.
- 15:40SPEAKER_04: And I think what we're seeing with clubs, you know, and you see these big monster makeshift machines that are are put together now, right?
- 15:46SPEAKER_04: And there's like the next, the next uh 13, the next 14, the copper, the bronze, the silvers, and they're like, you know, for all of what's that that's worth, I really think like these recreational feeder systems are also just as valuable.
- 16:03SPEAKER_04: So you're spending maybe whatever it is, three, four thousand dollars, right?
- 16:08SPEAKER_04: On these four to fifteen cards.
- 16:10SPEAKER_04: I think sometimes we can look at like a NOAA lightning and be like, hey, wow, these kids are doing great, and they're having a good time, they're not traveling across the nation, they're playing down the street, right?
- 16:21SPEAKER_04: What's the big ruckus about not playing for those guys?
- 16:25SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 16:25SPEAKER_04: So I think that's a big value, you know, and want to make sure that we're giving as much as we possibly can from that angle and building those teams up to, right?
- 16:35SPEAKER_04: And not getting caught up in this game of what's the next, what what next academy are they going to, what next uh pro team are they going to, what next college are they going to?
- 16:46SPEAKER_04: Can we just work with kids?
- 16:48SPEAKER_04: Can we just be the the people that are the leaders in the in the situation, that are providing value, that are running from it, that are getting in the in the trenches because the game's just 100% in the trenches, right?
- 17:01SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 17:02SPEAKER_04: The gritty players keep working their way through, and we see these big long trading plans that the top players have, and you're like, okay, I get I get your big long training plan, right?
- 17:11SPEAKER_04: But I also understand that that long trading plan needs a a direct plan.
- 17:16SPEAKER_04: It can't be Cole Palmer's plan, it can't be can't be the next famous guy's plan, it needs to be where's your rest built involved, what's what's your day you're doing performance, which days are you doing your team training?
- 17:29SPEAKER_04: What is that correlation look like?
- 17:31SPEAKER_04: Is there a periodization schedule to that stuff, right?
- 17:33SPEAKER_04: I mean, no one's talking about rest.
- 17:36SPEAKER_01: This episode is brought to you by the North American Soccer Expo.
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: If you remember last year when I had Alexi Lawless on, so many of you were blown away and kept on messaging me like, how did you get Alexi Lawless to talk to you?
- 17:51SPEAKER_01: And then to be honest with you, it was the North American Soccer Expo.
- 17:54SPEAKER_01: The Expo has workshops and seminars and field presentations from top coaches and industry experts.
- 18:03SPEAKER_01: I will be there this year 100%.
- 18:05SPEAKER_01: I'll be setting up on public campus remote.
- 18:08SPEAKER_01: In addition to the public campus that I'm going to be filming there, I'm also going to have an open hour where any coach at the expo or anybody at the expo can come sit down at the chair and have a one-on-one 15-minute chat with me, and you guys can just come and chat and talk about whatever you want.
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: North American Central Expo, July 30th to August 1st, Novi, Michigan.
- 18:31SPEAKER_01: I'll see you there.
- 18:32SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 18:34SPEAKER_01: We can't rest.
- 18:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:35SPEAKER_01: Okay, so let's say, let's say.
- 18:38SPEAKER_01: I don't want to pick on your daughter.
- 18:40SPEAKER_01: Let's say that you're let's say.
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: What's a good example?
- 18:47SPEAKER_01: Let's say you're training four days a week.
- 18:50SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna leave the club out of it.
- 18:52SPEAKER_01: You're training four kids are training four days a week at the highest level.
- 18:57SPEAKER_01: The MLS next, or the ECNL level, the GA, whatnot, okay?
- 19:02SPEAKER_01: Then on a fifth day, they're training with the personal trainer of physical fitness.
- 19:11SPEAKER_01: Then on the sixth day, they're with their technical trainer.
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: But then they still have two games on the weekend.
- 19:19SPEAKER_01: When do these kids rest?
- 19:21SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's a tough one.
- 19:23SPEAKER_04: I think that's a real that's a real question.
- 19:25SPEAKER_04: I've been talking to a few directors about that as well.
- 19:27SPEAKER_04: Um and I think everyone thinks they have to consistently get after they get their plan, whatever their plan is, like you just explained.
- 19:36SPEAKER_04: And I think I'm just as much of a problem now as a club can be a problem, right, for a kid's development.
- 19:43SPEAKER_04: So, meaning if that kid's not paying attention to how much he's training, right?
- 19:49SPEAKER_04: And he's coming to me two days a week, and I don't know that he's training at his club four days a week, right?
- 19:54SPEAKER_04: And he's got performance training before and after he comes to my session, I'm like, you're just loaded.
- 19:59SPEAKER_04: So I can you're coming in here and I'm breaking it.
- 20:02SPEAKER_04: So and I don't know any different if I don't get that information from the parent.
- 20:05SPEAKER_04: Exactly.
- 20:06SPEAKER_04: So if I get that information from the parent, we just shoot them straight up.
- 20:10SPEAKER_04: We we don't hold anything about losing business because we're trying to do it right.
- 20:14SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 20:15SPEAKER_04: We want to be those guys that are 100% with parents.
- 20:18SPEAKER_04: Some of them listen, some of them don't listen.
- 20:20SPEAKER_04: And that's that's the hard part for us.
- 20:22SPEAKER_01: I I th I when you're training some kids over a long period of time, multiple years, that was always my favorite sessions because they were very honest with me.
- 20:36SPEAKER_01: It's like, I am fried today, I am dead, I've had four sessions already this week.
- 20:40SPEAKER_01: You're in my fifth session, and I have two games in the weekend.
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: I was like, okay, we'll have a light session, and it's it's gonna be, you know, very I actually uh had coaches a club coach reach out to me because one player was over training, and I'm like, okay, well uh you know, I'll make sure that I'm always talking to her.
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: But uh how many c club coaches don't reach out, or how many players don't reach out because they're we're taught or they're taught it's the grind, or if uh every day you get better or you get worse, you never stay the same.
- 21:17SPEAKER_01: Bo shemba or whatever, you know what I mean?
- 21:20SPEAKER_01: So like so or how do you how do you navigate that?
- 21:25SPEAKER_01: Especially as a parent, as a parent of a 2010, how do you navigate that?
- 21:31SPEAKER_04: You know, I I uh I err on the side of the professionals, you know.
- 21:36SPEAKER_04: I I'm responsible to listen to her coach as much as someone else is responsible to listen to theirs, right?
- 21:46SPEAKER_04: And I think from my aspect of being a parent and my daughter playing, I think it's really important that I support her in every way I possibly can, right?
- 21:55SPEAKER_04: And I can only do that if I'm supporting the coach that's coaching my daughter, right?
- 21:59SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 22:00SPEAKER_04: Um, if I'm at any point in time adverse with that coach, I I think that deters from what she's able to take away.
- 22:07SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 22:07SPEAKER_04: And meanwhile, she's got days off and she jumps in here and trains sometimes as well, you know.
- 22:13SPEAKER_04: So we do have a little bit of cohesion where I understand what they're doing, right?
- 22:17SPEAKER_04: And uh make sure that she gets what she needs.
- 22:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 22:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:21SPEAKER_01: Did you train well, obviously you trained her growing up, but she probably had a ball at her feet at a very young age.
- 22:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, it was more of a 2-2, and you know, she was after dance class a little bit when she got going.
- 22:36SPEAKER_04: So she she came into it a little bit later.
- 22:38SPEAKER_04: Actually, one of the current trainers that we currently have, Tim Moore, was uh training her at the Jags.
- 22:43SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 22:44SPEAKER_04: Right, and brought her to junior Jags and at and brought her his big trophy, and that was the moment.
- 22:49SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 22:49SPEAKER_04: Okay, I got this big trophy.
- 22:51SPEAKER_04: It's a moment of joy, and she just is all in after that.
- 22:54SPEAKER_04: So it's cool.
- 22:55SPEAKER_04: It's really cool.
- 22:56SPEAKER_04: And it's cool to get Tim in here too.
- 22:57SPEAKER_04: So Tim's a middle school principal, and he has a good impact on kids, and he's always focused on doing what's right, so it's cool.
- 23:05SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 23:05SPEAKER_04: Good pieces.
- 23:06SPEAKER_01: Now, do you okay?
- 23:09SPEAKER_01: We talk about this as the Mecca and whatnot.
- 23:12SPEAKER_01: How old is this soccer area in terms of just just the depth and how and the quality, and and it just compounds because everybody has kids and puts them into coaching too, it seems like sometimes.
- 23:28SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's pretty cool.
- 23:29SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, my wife played for the Michigan Hawks.
- 23:34SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 23:35SPEAKER_04: So I mean, and her brother played for the Michigan Bulls.
- 23:38SPEAKER_04: So going back long history and time, right?
- 23:42SPEAKER_04: So I think the amount of depth and the correlation of stars that have come out of this particular area has been saying, and it might be like they're a little bit out in different areas that came to this area, right?
- 23:53SPEAKER_04: But from Michigan, right?
- 23:54SPEAKER_04: So I think the the Soclunas had a big impact from Sakuna.
- 23:59SPEAKER_04: Had a big massive impact, started the Walls and Rocks, yep, right, and got that off the ground.
- 24:04SPEAKER_04: And you know, the total sockers were generally started from Saklunas investing as well.
- 24:09SPEAKER_04: So I think you know, it's always been a monster that that's consistently grown.
- 24:13SPEAKER_04: The Tinian's had a big huge impact in the area, but the Tinian, Paul Tinian, right?
- 24:17SPEAKER_04: I think you see these big heads of the programs that are now leading the charge, right?
- 24:23SPEAKER_04: That were lasted for long periods of time.
- 24:25SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 24:25SPEAKER_04: Phoenix, you know, had a big monster impact as well.
- 24:27SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 24:28SPEAKER_04: As you know, you've been a part there.
- 24:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 24:30SPEAKER_04: So I think it just keeps being uh a situation where we're gonna see can excuse me, we're gonna see more and more, right?
- 24:38SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 24:39SPEAKER_01: Did your was your wife coached by Doug?
- 24:42SPEAKER_04: She was, yeah.
- 24:43SPEAKER_01: So that's kind of wild, right?
- 24:45SPEAKER_01: Because we always go, we always, there's always instances of, oh, well, we live in the same town that we went to high school with.
- 24:56SPEAKER_01: It's like, oh, is such and such teacher still there?
- 24:58SPEAKER_01: Is the fourth grade teacher there?
- 25:00SPEAKER_01: Is the fifth grade teacher?
- 25:02SPEAKER_01: Oh, she taught me.
- 25:03SPEAKER_01: That doesn't happen that much in the soccer community, right?
- 25:06SPEAKER_01: It happens here.
- 25:07SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 25:08SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 25:08SPEAKER_04: She played for them, and now our daughters had played for them, now she played for Michelle, right?
- 25:12SPEAKER_04: Like, it's a monster.
- 25:14SPEAKER_04: Like they have such a big monster, it's just really hard to tackle.
- 25:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:18SPEAKER_04: Yeah, for sure.
- 25:19SPEAKER_01: And that goes for all the four families that you just you know, it's the Lupinics for sure, it's the Seclunas, and I and I I almost bring this up in almost every episode because I want people to know if you're in a if you're in a soccer hotbed, it's usually because it's old.
- 25:43SPEAKER_01: And there's second generations and third generations.
- 25:47SPEAKER_01: And okay, think about your daughter's 2010s, who just won nationals.
- 25:54SPEAKER_01: Easy and on national title, right?
- 25:56SPEAKER_01: Correct.
- 25:57SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 26:00SPEAKER_01: How many of those players are second generation soccer players?
- 26:06SPEAKER_04: No, there's there's actually a couple guys that I played college ball with that both of their daughters are that team as well.
- 26:14SPEAKER_04: So, yeah, it's monster.
- 26:18SPEAKER_01: And people are always like, well, when is USA gonna win a World Cup on the men's side?
- 26:23SPEAKER_01: It's like when we have third and fourth generation soccer players, and there's a reason why our best players are all second generation, third generation, or if they're not second or third generation, they had older siblings that played usually, right?
- 26:38SPEAKER_01: Like Clint Dempsey's a good example.
- 26:40SPEAKER_01: He was a first generation soccer player, but his older sister played, or older brother played.
- 26:47SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 26:48SPEAKER_01: But man, I don't know.
- 26:51SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 26:51SPEAKER_04: We gotta get on the that horse of like supporting it, right?
- 26:54SPEAKER_04: There's so much like negativity surrounding the US men's national men's national team, right?
- 27:00SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 27:01SPEAKER_04: It's like you see Twelman go after him, you see Donovan go after him.
- 27:05SPEAKER_04: Winalda.
- 27:06SPEAKER_04: Yeah, like when at what point do we look inward?
- 27:09SPEAKER_04: At what point are we going, you know what, guys?
- 27:12SPEAKER_04: It's really hard to travel back and forth across the pond.
- 27:15SPEAKER_04: It's really hard for these guys to rest.
- 27:17SPEAKER_04: It's really hard to perform at the right times.
- 27:19SPEAKER_04: Like, look at the schedule that these guys are running.
- 27:22SPEAKER_04: It's like when you're playing in the Premier League and you get rest and you jump back and you're an English national team player, that's not so hard.
- 27:29SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 27:30SPEAKER_04: Right?
- 27:30SPEAKER_04: Different monster.
- 27:31SPEAKER_04: So I think you know, hopefully our World Cup's a good one, you know?
- 27:35SPEAKER_04: And I'm out there supporting it because I think I'm just as much of a part of it as anything else, right?
- 27:40SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I'm an inward guy.
- 27:42SPEAKER_04: Like my responsibility is here.
- 27:43SPEAKER_04: I'm I'm gonna do as much as I possibly can to impact the kid.
- 27:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 27:47SPEAKER_04: Are you doing what you can?
- 27:48SPEAKER_04: Are you looking inward?
- 27:50SPEAKER_04: Are you going oh the system?
- 27:51SPEAKER_04: It's all the system, right?
- 27:53SPEAKER_04: It's everything else besides besides looking inward, right?
- 27:56SPEAKER_01: And everybody's just blaming the system.
- 27:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and blaming the pay-to-play.
- 28:00SPEAKER_01: It's like, guys, it's what we have.
- 28:02SPEAKER_01: Are you just trying to make it better or are you just complaining about it?
- 28:06SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 28:06SPEAKER_01: Because it's not going anywhere.
- 28:08SPEAKER_01: So just deal with it.
- 28:11SPEAKER_04: Right?
- 28:11SPEAKER_04: Our culture's our culture.
- 28:13SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 28:13SPEAKER_04: Our system's our system, right?
- 28:15SPEAKER_04: Are we are we principle-based?
- 28:16SPEAKER_04: Are we system-based?
- 28:18SPEAKER_04: Are we?
- 28:19SPEAKER_04: It's not for us to debate.
- 28:20SPEAKER_04: It's it's for them, right?
- 28:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 28:23SPEAKER_04: We got a guy on staff right now, is uh Caleb Parker.
- 28:26SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 28:26SPEAKER_04: Caleb Parker works with U.S.
- 28:27SPEAKER_04: Soccer, does data analytics.
- 28:29SPEAKER_04: So he's got really good information, right?
- 28:31SPEAKER_04: He's got some breakdown of like Emma Hayes talking about what's going on there.
- 28:35SPEAKER_04: He's got a little bit of from Pochettino, you know, it's like it's good pieces, right?
- 28:39SPEAKER_04: So he's getting like the GPS data.
- 28:41SPEAKER_04: It's pretty smooth.
- 28:42SPEAKER_01: So you have seven employees.
- 28:44SPEAKER_04: Seven, yeah.
- 28:46unknown: Yeah.
- 28:46SPEAKER_01: And are they all out of this facility, or do you have multiple multiple facilities?
- 28:50SPEAKER_04: Well, we're doing little pop-ups here and there from time to time.
- 28:53SPEAKER_04: Um, we were working in a little bit of a different space, but I think that ships sailed.
- 28:57SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 28:57SPEAKER_04: So we're focusing more being here, trying to be that like niche pizza spot in the corner, right?
- 29:03SPEAKER_04: Being that like, I don't want to be dominoes, I don't want to be a little Caesars.
- 29:07SPEAKER_04: I want that high-end pizza.
- 29:08SPEAKER_04: I want that Italian flavor, that crispy crust, that thin layer.
- 29:11SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 29:12SPEAKER_04: That's what I'm looking for.
- 29:13SPEAKER_04: Brick oven.
- 29:13SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 29:14SPEAKER_04: Let's make it real, right?
- 29:15SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 29:15SPEAKER_04: That's what I want.
- 29:16SPEAKER_04: I want it, I want people to come in here and know they're getting a real product.
- 29:19SPEAKER_04: I'm not gonna, I'm not gonna shower you with the sugar.
- 29:22SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 29:22SPEAKER_04: We're gonna try and build up your confidence by giving you a place to trust us.
- 29:27SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 29:28SPEAKER_04: Making for you making sure you feel safe while you trust us.
- 29:31SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 29:31SPEAKER_04: You do what you do, right?
- 29:33SPEAKER_04: And then we try and get a creative piece out of you while you're working.
- 29:37SPEAKER_04: We build up your confidence.
- 29:38SPEAKER_04: And then when you're when you're leaving, we keep coming back and trying to go back through that cycle again.
- 29:43SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 29:43SPEAKER_04: So the guys that we have here on staff, I think, you know, become a special group right now, right?
- 29:48SPEAKER_04: It's um, you know, you got a Tim Moore is a middle school principal.
- 29:53SPEAKER_04: I got Dan Diek, who still works with the Jags.
- 29:56SPEAKER_04: Yep, you know, he's a great goalkeeper, got great philosophy on the approach.
- 30:00SPEAKER_04: He's been in the game forever, been one of the guys I coach with forever.
- 30:03SPEAKER_04: Scott Halls, uh 25-year college coach.
- 30:08SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you know, he's now working with Detroit Pal, doing the athletic directing for that program, which is a monster by itself.
- 30:16SPEAKER_04: Bringing about a thousand kids, impacts the kids.
- 30:19SPEAKER_04: So now it's like looking at a different aspect of the game.
- 30:22SPEAKER_04: How can we look from those inner city kids and impact them as well?
- 30:26SPEAKER_04: So, which is super cool, super cool.
- 30:28SPEAKER_04: And we we've got a handful of younger guys too, graduate assistant coaches at UAD, um, you know, former players that were players of mine when they were 10 years old that came back and worked for me.
- 30:40SPEAKER_04: I have some guys that are now high school coaches that came back when they were 10 years from 10 years old to come work and then turn into a high school coach.
- 30:48SPEAKER_04: Um, so it's been cool, man.
- 30:49SPEAKER_04: It's it's actually a really good good vibe for me, you know.
- 30:52SPEAKER_04: Like I get a little bit of the spin back.
- 30:54SPEAKER_01: And how many hours are you actually on the field?
- 30:57SPEAKER_01: Or are or training?
- 30:58SPEAKER_04: You know, it's anywhere from five to fifteen a week or take, right?
- 31:04SPEAKER_04: But all the behind-the-scenes stuff I'm I'm getting after pretty consistently.
- 31:08SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 31:08SPEAKER_01: You're trying to run in the day-to-day.
- 31:10SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I'm just trying to make sure we're we're doing our best to help people, right?
- 31:13SPEAKER_04: I think a lot of people don't have questions answered about what we can do and how we can help.
- 31:19SPEAKER_04: I want to make sure that we're answering those questions and trying to do the best we can to help them out, right?
- 31:24SPEAKER_01: What's the number one thing that you guys work on?
- 31:26SPEAKER_01: Is it the physical component or is it the technical component?
- 31:31SPEAKER_04: Um, well, we try to do an activation when we start, right?
- 31:35SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 31:35SPEAKER_04: So that activation can be a handful of different things.
- 31:38SPEAKER_04: And I think what we see a lot of is there's lack of motor skills development.
- 31:44SPEAKER_04: We see a we see kids that struggle to make eye contact.
- 31:47SPEAKER_04: We see kids struggle to have conversations.
- 31:50SPEAKER_04: So when when they jump in, I want to make sure they one, they're comfortable, right?
- 31:56SPEAKER_04: So, how do I get them comfortable?
- 31:57SPEAKER_04: Okay, is it is it the younger group and we're tossing a ball and we're playing a game, we're playing head, head, fingers, toes, ball, whatever it is.
- 32:05SPEAKER_04: Right, right.
- 32:06SPEAKER_04: So I think that's a big monsterpiece for us as we get going.
- 32:10SPEAKER_04: And then we do focus on balance and coordination because it's skipped.
- 32:15SPEAKER_04: We do focus on rhythm, right?
- 32:16SPEAKER_04: It's skipped, right?
- 32:18SPEAKER_04: So, what we're seeing, and in my undergraduate training of being a physical education teacher, is we're seeing kids that aren't getting monitored through the standardized tests because schools are going in a different direction, maybe not the direction that they're skipping the test, but the tests aren't as important anymore, right?
- 32:38SPEAKER_04: And because that's skipped, we're seeing those kids come to us more frequently.
- 32:42SPEAKER_04: And when we see those kids, I think if we get that first 10 minutes right every single time, right, we can get through those motor skills.
- 32:51SPEAKER_04: And we get through those motor skills and we get into the technique of the ball and we work through all those precise ways that we like to move the ball, right?
- 32:57SPEAKER_04: I think that becomes our big value, right?
- 33:00SPEAKER_04: And then all the rest is, you know, we're working on the confidence and solving problems, getting through at the end, we go through a core situation, right?
- 33:07SPEAKER_04: Where we go through anything from glue bridges to planks to crunches to rush and twists, right?
- 33:13SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 33:14SPEAKER_04: And we do that stuff to make sure that they're centralizing their spine and making sure that they're more compact players and people, right?
- 33:21SPEAKER_04: Um, sometimes we'll rip through a little bit of stretching, right?
- 33:24SPEAKER_04: So they're they're cool appropriately.
- 33:27SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 33:29SPEAKER_01: The motor skills thing that you just said.
- 33:33SPEAKER_01: Do you think that it's skipped because they specialize too early?
- 33:40SPEAKER_04: You know, it's hard to say.
- 33:42SPEAKER_04: You know, it's hard to be a multi sport athlete right now, right?
- 33:48SPEAKER_04: With the way parents live their lives.
- 33:50SPEAKER_04: For sure.
- 33:51SPEAKER_04: I'm a vi I'm live in a busy family.
- 33:53SPEAKER_04: It's very hard.
- 33:54SPEAKER_04: If my daughter had another two sports to go to, I'd be no idea how I could do it.
- 33:58SPEAKER_04: Couldn't do it.
- 33:59SPEAKER_04: Imagine if you had multiple kids playing multiple sports.
- 34:01SPEAKER_04: There's no way.
- 34:02SPEAKER_04: That's just really, really challenging.
- 34:04SPEAKER_01: So and finance financially too.
- 34:06SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I think we we like to we have these terms.
- 34:09SPEAKER_04: This are we specializing too early?
- 34:12SPEAKER_04: Are we doing this?
- 34:13SPEAKER_04: Are we doing I mean the environment's changed?
- 34:16SPEAKER_04: Yeah, right.
- 34:16SPEAKER_04: It's not the same anymore.
- 34:18SPEAKER_04: So what are we saying?
- 34:19SPEAKER_04: We want our kids to pull out and do basketball, and we're gonna add, yeah, it's a great, great component.
- 34:24SPEAKER_04: Do it if you can do it, right?
- 34:26SPEAKER_04: Right, but at the same point, I think there's a lot of families that not necessarily specializing, but it's like, hey, I there's only so much I can do, right?
- 34:36SPEAKER_04: Right?
- 34:36SPEAKER_04: I'm here, I'm putting my time in.
- 34:39SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 34:40SPEAKER_04: So I think that's a big monster for everybody, right?
- 34:43SPEAKER_04: That we experience anyways.
- 34:45SPEAKER_04: It's like there is too some families that that go and specialize, but I don't think it's like the only way from.
- 34:52SPEAKER_04: It's just what they know.
- 34:53SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 34:55SPEAKER_01: How okay.
- 34:58SPEAKER_01: When you get new players in, do you guys run them through a a gauntlet of something that you do in the first session with everybody just to get that baseline?
- 35:13SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so that's a really good question.
- 35:16SPEAKER_04: You know, when we when we start, it's getting a basis for understanding where their coordination's at, right?
- 35:23SPEAKER_04: Sometimes our deviations in our group, sometimes we have higher-end players in a group, sometimes we have lower end players in a group, right?
- 35:30SPEAKER_04: And again, I'm not here to judge any player, right?
- 35:33SPEAKER_04: That's not that's not my job.
- 35:34SPEAKER_04: Of course.
- 35:35SPEAKER_04: I'm not here assessing.
- 35:36SPEAKER_04: I've I've had enough assessing, right?
- 35:38SPEAKER_04: I I have enough hearing coaches assess to all together.
- 35:43SPEAKER_04: So when I get a lower end player and I get a higher-end player, I'm looking at it from a balance place, I'm looking at it from a coordination place.
- 35:51SPEAKER_04: So when we went through that activation, I can get a pretty good gauge based upon my experience being in the game and seeing what kids can and can't do.
- 35:59SPEAKER_04: Sometimes you're gonna see a kid that can't run, go through a ladder, do an icky shuffle.
- 36:03SPEAKER_04: Sometimes you're gonna see a kid that can't balance on a single leg, can't do a single skater hop, right?
- 36:08SPEAKER_04: So um when you do that from the start or the jump off, it starts becoming your evaluation system, right?
- 36:16SPEAKER_04: And training my trainers to do that exactly the way that I do it, that's a challenge that I have.
- 36:22SPEAKER_04: Yeah, right.
- 36:22SPEAKER_04: And I think when we go through that from understanding balance, then we get into a band uh banded resistance and we go through a small place from there.
- 36:32SPEAKER_04: So that gives us a jump off, and then the trainers communicate with me and I communicate with them, and we try and stay in the same plan for certain players, right?
- 36:41SPEAKER_04: As they grow.
- 36:42SPEAKER_04: So we do have a curriculum that we do follow, right?
- 36:45SPEAKER_04: And we we keep it consistent through a revolving 10-week system, okay, right?
- 36:50SPEAKER_04: Um, I don't think it's perfect, I think it I think it can be changed, right?
- 36:54SPEAKER_04: I think I'm just looking for a plan that's going to enhance how they consistently grow, right?
- 37:01SPEAKER_04: Right, and that plan can evolve, and that's what I keep bringing to my trainers too.
- 37:05SPEAKER_04: What do you see?
- 37:06SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 37:07SPEAKER_04: What did what did you do when you planned a day?
- 37:10SPEAKER_04: What'd you do when you did it?
- 37:11SPEAKER_04: You know, did you review what you did?
- 37:13SPEAKER_04: And now do you start to see the things come to a culmination that we're trying to produce?
- 37:19SPEAKER_04: Right?
- 37:19SPEAKER_04: Where it's more of a pragmatic approach.
- 37:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah right.
- 37:22SPEAKER_04: And I think that's massive for us.
- 37:24SPEAKER_01: Would you say that I mean, does it pro obviously it's soccer specific, but are you are everything that you plan out, is it soccer specific or is it more developing the overall athlete?
- 37:43SPEAKER_04: Um, it's more soccer specific.
- 37:45SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 37:46SPEAKER_04: We we are trying to devolve develop the person, right?
- 37:49SPEAKER_04: Right?
- 37:49SPEAKER_04: And I think when we develop the person, um, I think soccer is a huge component of having balance in the game all together, right?
- 37:58SPEAKER_04: So when we look at it, I'm not looking at it like, hey, is this kid gonna be a great football player, American football player, you know, and is that what we're trying to evolve into?
- 38:08SPEAKER_04: And no, that's not really what I'm interested in.
- 38:10SPEAKER_04: So I think we gain the momentum from consistency within that activation, right?
- 38:19SPEAKER_04: And however they take it from there, right?
- 38:22SPEAKER_04: Going into their technique and going into the evolution of solving problems in small side of games.
- 38:27SPEAKER_04: I think that starts to become you can use that anywhere.
- 38:30SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 38:31SPEAKER_04: You can go into a hockey environment, you can see that there.
- 38:33SPEAKER_04: You can see like the old school 90s Russians from the Red Wings coming back into the game, like go juggle a soccer ball as warm-up.
- 38:43SPEAKER_04: Absolutely, you know, like those small things.
- 38:45SPEAKER_04: Everyone forgets.
- 38:47SPEAKER_04: It's such a universal game.
- 38:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 38:49SPEAKER_01: I mean, almost every figure skater or or hockey player can warm up with a soccer ball.
- 38:56SPEAKER_01: And I I still think I still think juggling is one of the best ways to warm up as long as you're using all your body parts.
- 39:03SPEAKER_01: If you're just going with your feet, I mean that's can be pretty easy.
- 39:08SPEAKER_01: But if you uh challenge yourself to use all the different surfaces, like North Carolina has this 14 um touches test where you have to do laces insides, outsides, and heels, both eyes, tops of your shoulders, head and chest.
- 39:24SPEAKER_01: And it can't it can never hit the ground.
- 39:26SPEAKER_01: But you try to do it as multiple times as possible without it hitting the ground, and there's no order and there's no touch restriction.
- 39:32SPEAKER_01: Tobin Heath, former national team player, could do it twice around in like like 42 touches or something like that.
- 39:41SPEAKER_01: And and I mean, I always just started my sessions mostly with juggling tests, not just juggling, but juggling tests, wall ball.
- 39:51SPEAKER_01: I mean, uh sure.
- 39:52SPEAKER_01: A ball on a wall is one of the most important tools that a player could ever have at their disposal.
- 39:59SPEAKER_01: I mean, when we were growing up, that's how we developed.
- 40:03SPEAKER_01: We didn't have seven peaks, we didn't have playmaker training, we didn't have next level, we didn't have all the the extra stuff.
- 40:10SPEAKER_01: I was a goalkeeper, and but I played field too, because back in the day you did.
- 40:17SPEAKER_01: I never had a goalkeeper trainer.
- 40:19SPEAKER_01: Everything was self-taught.
- 40:20SPEAKER_01: Everything I mean, where did you play uh growing up?
- 40:25SPEAKER_04: Uh I played on the east side, so I grew I grew up under a guy, uh Klaus Deboer.
- 40:30SPEAKER_04: Oh okay.
- 40:33SPEAKER_04: You know.
- 40:34SPEAKER_04: Klaus uh Klaus was a great, great teacher, old school Dutch guy.
- 40:39SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 40:39SPEAKER_04: Had his ways.
- 40:40SPEAKER_04: I was I was a winger.
- 40:42SPEAKER_04: What boy did I run?
- 40:43SPEAKER_04: You know, it was one of those things.
- 40:45SPEAKER_02: How was that?
- 40:46SPEAKER_04: Uh it was a Rochester attack at that time.
- 40:48SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 40:48SPEAKER_04: Yeah, he was and he was bringing players in and out of his systems of traveling across the the world and globe, and went to went across the pond to the Netherlands with him, you know, played out there a little bit, did a little bit of things when I was smaller.
- 41:04SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 41:05SPEAKER_04: What year were you?
- 41:06SPEAKER_04: I was in '96, so I actually played um college bowl at Eastern.
- 41:11SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 41:12SPEAKER_01: How about you?
- 41:13SPEAKER_01: I dude, I'm in '85.
- 41:16SPEAKER_01: Well, I graduated in 03, but I'm an 85 birth year.
- 41:23SPEAKER_01: I just played like Lobos, dude.
- 41:25SPEAKER_04: Oh, I thought I thought we were talking about what year we were.
- 41:27SPEAKER_04: Uh 78.
- 41:28SPEAKER_04: I thought about birth year.
- 41:29SPEAKER_04: I'm thinking high school cal.
- 41:31SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 41:31SPEAKER_04: High school.
- 41:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 41:32SPEAKER_01: 78.
- 41:33SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 41:33SPEAKER_04: 78, yeah.
- 41:35SPEAKER_01: Those are I mean, that year.
- 41:38SPEAKER_01: 78.
- 41:39SPEAKER_01: Wasn't that like Masenoff and stuff like that?
- 41:41SPEAKER_04: Uh Masenhoff was a few years before.
- 41:43SPEAKER_04: I remember um having to watch a video of Masenhoff when I was in high school because he played against uh Eisenhower.
- 41:53SPEAKER_04: Did you go to Ike?
- 41:54SPEAKER_04: I went to Ike, yeah.
- 41:55SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 41:55SPEAKER_04: So um during that time, he was he was the guy and they were showing us video of him all the time.
- 42:01SPEAKER_01: But Chris Cortag wasn't around then yet, was he?
- 42:05SPEAKER_02: No.
- 42:06SPEAKER_01: He's later on.
- 42:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think he was only on the girl's side.
- 42:10SPEAKER_01: But yeah, yeah.
- 42:12SPEAKER_01: So, okay.
- 42:14SPEAKER_01: How many, how many, okay, you are here five to fifteen hours.
- 42:19SPEAKER_01: How many sessions are you guys doing throughout the week?
- 42:24SPEAKER_04: So we consistently run seven days a week.
- 42:27SPEAKER_01: Um I saw that on your schedule.
- 42:29SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, I hope he's not doing this all about.
- 42:31SPEAKER_04: No, there's there's no chance my legs won't survive.
- 42:34SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 42:35SPEAKER_04: I'm I'm doing my best to stay fit as I possibly can all the time.
- 42:38SPEAKER_04: And it's it's just catching a little bit, right?
- 42:40SPEAKER_04: And we run five to six, six to seven, seven to eight.
- 42:45SPEAKER_04: Those are small groups.
- 42:47SPEAKER_04: We do our personals four to five, and we do them eight to nine.
- 42:50SPEAKER_04: And we try and do that Monday through Friday.
- 42:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 42:52SPEAKER_04: Right?
- 42:53SPEAKER_04: Um, the weekend we do the personal 8 a.m.
- 42:56SPEAKER_04: to 9 a.m.
- 42:57SPEAKER_04: And then we do the small groups after that all the way up to noon.
- 43:00SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 43:00SPEAKER_04: Um, it does a pretty consistent base.
- 43:04SPEAKER_04: We have on average, probably about eight kids in a class, give or take.
- 43:07SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 43:08SPEAKER_04: Right?
- 43:08SPEAKER_04: Um, and some days a little bit higher, some days a little bit lower.
- 43:11SPEAKER_04: Our max capacity is 15 to a class, right?
- 43:14SPEAKER_04: We don't go above that no matter what.
- 43:16SPEAKER_04: Um, so it's a big philosophy for us to make sure we're focused on the kids that are here and not the kids that are coming here.
- 43:24SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 43:24SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 43:24SPEAKER_04: And I think there's also that whole iron sharpens iron thing going on where everyone's concerned about who they're training with and when when are they training?
- 43:34SPEAKER_04: And I'm always like, man, we're gonna be here.
- 43:37SPEAKER_04: Whenever you want to show up, that's totally up to you.
- 43:40SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 43:40SPEAKER_04: And no matter how you want to look at who you're training with, we're gonna push you.
- 43:43SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 43:44SPEAKER_04: So we have different levels within the same session, right?
- 43:47SPEAKER_04: So I think that's one of the hardest things to do.
- 43:49SPEAKER_04: And what we were talking about earlier is is a lower end, a higher end, right?
- 43:53SPEAKER_04: And how do we separate that while we're in the middle of a session?
- 43:56SPEAKER_04: Are we able to take that small that one group?
- 44:00SPEAKER_04: And that turns into a beginner style technique, right?
- 44:03SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 44:03SPEAKER_04: When when the more advanced group is working on a little bit more advanced technique, well, you're doing that in the flow of the session, you're not like pinpointing, you just start at that beginner place.
- 44:13SPEAKER_04: And that more advanced group's got a little bit more special in the flow technique and design to it.
- 44:18SPEAKER_04: So I think it's a really hard thing for a beginner trainer to do that.
- 44:23SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 44:24SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 44:24SPEAKER_04: There's a lot of new young guys getting in the environment doing the same thing everywhere, right?
- 44:28SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 44:29SPEAKER_04: You're trying to get it up and shop.
- 44:30SPEAKER_04: And I'm like, man, I hope I hope you have a plan.
- 44:33SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 44:33SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 44:33SPEAKER_04: And I hope your plan is to evolve and make it the best possible thing for the kids.
- 44:38SPEAKER_04: Um, but I think when you don't have a plan and you get into that place where you have a lower level player and a higher level player, and we don't know how to manage that, yeah, then that lower level kids uh is sacrifice, right?
- 44:53SPEAKER_01: I think it's amazing how hard that is for some young coaches to be able to realize that, okay, it's not what you preach, it's what you tolerate.
- 45:05SPEAKER_01: And and if I've always uh believed that let's say you have a brand new player, but they're training with kids that have been training with you for a year, they know your ins and outs, they know your verbiage, they know your vocabulary and everything that you want, they know your sense of humor, so you know that I'm not like going at you, you know, you know, just banter.
- 45:32SPEAKER_01: But what I always say is that like if if if a brand new kid comes in and is kind of killing the drill, I don't say anything right away.
- 45:45SPEAKER_01: I don't.
- 45:46SPEAKER_01: But then if one of the best players does something that one of the weaker players does, I'm on them.
- 45:54SPEAKER_01: Because I'm like, hey, let's uh let's keep the standard up.
- 45:58SPEAKER_01: Let's make sure that, you know, what's your individual goal here?
- 46:04SPEAKER_01: What is your individual goal?
- 46:06SPEAKER_01: If your individual goal is to be a pro, and your individual player uh goal is to be a college player, and you just want to make you know the JV team this this fall, right?
- 46:17SPEAKER_04: Which is nothing wrong with that.
- 46:19SPEAKER_01: There is nothing wrong with that, right?
- 46:21SPEAKER_01: But what I want to see is that this player who j or a player that just wants to have fun or just be with his boys, you're not bringing it down for this kid.
- 46:32SPEAKER_01: Of course.
- 46:33SPEAKER_01: As long as you're just putting in the effort, I'm okay.
- 46:36SPEAKER_01: But and I love the small group setting because you get to coach every single kid.
- 46:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 46:42SPEAKER_01: Every kid leaves with a coaching point.
- 46:45SPEAKER_01: Everybody was talked to.
- 46:46SPEAKER_01: And the coaching point doesn't always have to be positive.
- 46:49SPEAKER_01: Sometimes we gain confidence, especially young players, they gain confidence by knowing what they need to work on.
- 46:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 46:57SPEAKER_01: If you just, if you just like just say that they're great, they're great, they're great, they're great, they're not but gonna know that.
- 47:05SPEAKER_01: Oh man, you know what?
- 47:07SPEAKER_01: I need to work on this.
- 47:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 47:10SPEAKER_01: I think coaches just just kind of gloss over it.
- 47:13SPEAKER_01: And sadly, in some of the club environments that I've seen from afar, not every kid is coached, not every kid is spoken to during their sessions.
- 47:24SPEAKER_01: And that's a problem.
- 47:26SPEAKER_04: Yeah, for sure.
- 47:26SPEAKER_04: For sure.
- 47:27SPEAKER_04: You yeah, you knock it out of the park with saying that.
- 47:29SPEAKER_04: You know, I think I think kids need contact, meaning they have to have conversations with coaches.
- 47:36SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 47:36SPEAKER_04: Kids need to understand what their expectations are, what what are their goals, right?
- 47:42SPEAKER_04: And when you go back to where you started there with the idea and understanding of one kid breaking a drill, I go inward on that.
- 47:51SPEAKER_04: I'm like, hey, how can I make this about me?
- 47:54SPEAKER_04: Because at that moment, it's my drill, the the right drill.
- 47:58SPEAKER_04: Is it way too?
- 48:00SPEAKER_04: Am I ready?
- 48:00SPEAKER_04: Yep.
- 48:01SPEAKER_04: Am I ready to adapt to the situation?
- 48:03SPEAKER_04: Because when you start seeing that over and over again, I don't have, I have a set plan, do I have an adaptable plan?
- 48:10SPEAKER_04: Am I willing to am I willing to scrap it?
- 48:13SPEAKER_04: Because like a lot of guys run with their plan, it's like, hey, I am I'm the mecca, I got this thing down.
- 48:18SPEAKER_04: Yep, I know I know what I'm doing, but what happens when it's not working?
- 48:23SPEAKER_04: Do you like scrap it and just go to scrimmage?
- 48:25SPEAKER_04: Exactly.
- 48:26SPEAKER_04: Do you do you adapt and evolve into the situation?
- 48:28SPEAKER_04: I man, you have to, you have to adapt.
- 48:31SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 48:31SPEAKER_04: And if you don't, then you it's not part of your game, right?
- 48:34SPEAKER_04: So I think, you know, that's I think when we talk to the the coaches or new trainers that come in, right?
- 48:41SPEAKER_04: And they spend two, three months following me, right?
- 48:44SPEAKER_04: Yep.
- 48:44SPEAKER_04: They're like, how do you know just observe when to go?
- 48:47SPEAKER_04: And he's like, how do you know when to switch it?
- 48:48SPEAKER_04: And I'm like, well, like this is part of a little bit of a Rolodex of a library that I have in my context of sessions, right?
- 48:56SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 48:56SPEAKER_04: And it's really hard to teach that to you overnight.
- 48:59SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 48:59SPEAKER_04: But we recognize it, and I'll give him some cues.
- 49:02SPEAKER_04: And this is one cue, and this is two cues.
- 49:04SPEAKER_04: Are you, when you're planning and doing and reviewing, are you reflecting in your session?
- 49:11SPEAKER_04: Is this working?
- 49:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 49:13SPEAKER_04: No?
- 49:13SPEAKER_04: Okay, scrap it.
- 49:15SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 49:15SPEAKER_04: Can you change it?
- 49:16SPEAKER_04: What was your what was your next plan in place?
- 49:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 49:19SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 49:20SPEAKER_04: And you have to have a multiple plan situation going on in any training environment, in my opinion, right?
- 49:25SPEAKER_04: I think you go in and sometimes your object objective could be, you know, when to dribble versus when to pass.
- 49:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 49:31SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 49:32SPEAKER_04: And, you know, we don't have the right problem solving mechanism in there or design of a game, right?
- 49:38SPEAKER_04: And I think when we get to that place, you know, you start to, okay, do I need to pull out a player?
- 49:44SPEAKER_04: Okay, is it there's too many players involved here?
- 49:47SPEAKER_04: And right, is the space too big?
- 49:50SPEAKER_04: Is it too small?
- 49:51SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 49:51SPEAKER_04: And and I think that starts to become something that evolves over time for all trainers, right?
- 49:58SPEAKER_04: As you're an experienced coach, you learn, you know, what your spatial demands are, right?
- 50:03SPEAKER_04: What your work to rest ratio is, right?
- 50:06SPEAKER_04: And I think all that plays a part.
- 50:09SPEAKER_04: And it's like, okay, here's here's a ball, new trainer.
- 50:12SPEAKER_04: Go ahead.
- 50:14SPEAKER_04: Have fun.
- 50:14SPEAKER_04: Rock.
- 50:15SPEAKER_04: Good luck.
- 50:17SPEAKER_04: You know, like that's the funny part to me, is like, as we see how everyone comes back into the game, I love it.
- 50:23SPEAKER_04: I'm a big fan.
- 50:24SPEAKER_04: All soccer is good soccer, man.
- 50:26SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 50:26SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 50:27SPEAKER_04: I'm not gonna, I'm not gonna be judgmental about how you train or what you do.
- 50:31SPEAKER_04: Okay, but there are habits.
- 50:33SPEAKER_04: We all know there's habits.
- 50:34SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 50:34SPEAKER_04: Are you enforcing good habits?
- 50:36SPEAKER_04: And are you in for are you changing kids that are doing bad habits?
- 50:41SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 50:41SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 50:42SPEAKER_04: So I'm I'm interested how it's all gonna shake out, to be honest with you.
- 50:46SPEAKER_04: But I I like what we're doing here.
- 50:48SPEAKER_04: It's had a good impact.
- 50:50SPEAKER_04: I think we're starting to like evolve.
- 50:52SPEAKER_04: We're helping out, you know, some different clubs here and there, and I I'm happy with it.
- 50:57SPEAKER_01: My another thing that I always loved about the small group setting, and then watching my other coaches do this is like, okay, we're expecting four players for training.
- 51:12unknown: Yeah.
- 51:13SPEAKER_01: Twelve show up.
- 51:14SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 51:15SPEAKER_01: Okay, how do you adapt?
- 51:16SPEAKER_01: What are you gonna do?
- 51:17SPEAKER_01: Are you can you do the exact same thing?
- 51:19SPEAKER_01: You just you just add a couple balls.
- 51:22SPEAKER_01: Because like I'm really big into like circuit uh passing and moving, and like ended up finishing on a small goal.
- 51:29SPEAKER_01: Okay, how many goals can we score in two minutes?
- 51:32SPEAKER_01: Okay, but if if we have all of a sudden we have 12 players, we're gonna have to add an extra pass.
- 51:38SPEAKER_01: We're gonna have to add an extra ball, we're gonna have to split up the line.
- 51:42SPEAKER_01: So, like, if the if the starting point is here and the end point is here, and we're just doing a circuit in movement, it's like, okay, we need three here.
- 51:50SPEAKER_01: We shouldn't have.
- 51:51SPEAKER_01: I get a kick out of watching some players train or coaches train, and it's like, okay, we have nine players here, we have one player here, and then we have one player here, and then it's just a passing circuit.
- 52:03SPEAKER_01: It's like, no, why don't you have four people here, three people there, three people there?
- 52:10SPEAKER_01: Each line starts with a ball, and then now we I when I say go, then you it's immediately quicker, and everything uh rotates.
- 52:19SPEAKER_01: But if I'm watching my brand new staff member who's only uh shadowed me for a month, it's like they might struggle, and they get overwhelmed, and that's one of my favorite things.
- 52:33SPEAKER_01: But you said bad habits, you're talking about bad habits.
- 52:36SPEAKER_01: Man, I don't know how many conversations I've had with players and parents over the years where I'm on a bad habit at nine, ten years old, and they're like, But I get but I can do that.
- 52:51SPEAKER_01: It's like, are you playing at the highest level that you want to play at?
- 52:55SPEAKER_01: Because you get away at the level that you're currently at.
- 52:59SPEAKER_01: You get away with some of the those habits.
- 53:02SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 53:03SPEAKER_01: I'm trying to break you because of where you're going.
- 53:06SPEAKER_01: And we get that when we're in our capacity, we get to see the player.
- 53:10SPEAKER_01: If we're working with a 10-year-old, we get to see, we think about what they're gonna be at 18.
- 53:16SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 53:17SPEAKER_01: I think that gets lost in club training because there are two focus on Saturday and what's the game on Saturday, and what's the game on Sunday?
- 53:26SPEAKER_01: Do you see that at all?
- 53:29SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you know, I think bad habits are tricky, right?
- 53:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I think how we label stuff is really tricky too.
- 53:35SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 53:36SPEAKER_04: Because I'm a Dutch guy, I'm a front foot guy, you know, and and I train my staff front foot all day long, right?
- 53:43SPEAKER_04: And in doing that, there's not anything wrong with playing your back foot.
- 53:48SPEAKER_04: You just need to know the right time in order to do it.
- 53:50SPEAKER_04: Right, right.
- 53:51SPEAKER_04: And it has to has to be played the appropriate way.
- 53:54SPEAKER_04: So I think every type of understanding within the game has its place, and then working through that place has to be evolved, right?
- 54:08SPEAKER_04: Now, that's one habit of a thousand, and I'm sure we can find 10 bad habits right now, right?
- 54:14SPEAKER_04: But I don't want to, I don't want to be the guy that label stuff.
- 54:18SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I'm not gonna be there, but I am gonna be like, hey, this is our good habit, this is what we're focused on, this is what we're doing.
- 54:24SPEAKER_04: And if you want to evolve with that, and that's our good habit, and I explain why we do it, where we do it, when we do it, how we do it, and what we're doing, you know, all the time over and again, right?
- 54:34SPEAKER_04: And I also go through like what this tactical understanding can be like, right?
- 54:40SPEAKER_04: So if you're a if you're playing the ball backwards, you better know why.
- 54:45SPEAKER_04: Right?
- 54:45SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, everyone's like, let's just make a pass.
- 54:48SPEAKER_04: Like, what are we talking about now?
- 54:50SPEAKER_04: Oh, chart it up.
- 54:51SPEAKER_04: Yeah, let's just let's just let it pass.
- 54:53SPEAKER_04: Let's go backwards.
- 54:54SPEAKER_04: Like, I can't, I can't do it, right?
- 54:56SPEAKER_04: I just can't do it.
- 54:57SPEAKER_04: So, and one of the parents a long time ago came to me and said, Hey, why do you why you get so hung up on kids playing forward?
- 55:04SPEAKER_04: I'm like, what are you talking about?
- 55:06SPEAKER_04: Why wouldn't you want your kid to play forward?
- 55:08SPEAKER_04: Right, like that's such a big focus on what we're trying to do.
- 55:11SPEAKER_04: I'm not saying, hey, ping it, whatever, but they should very first instinct should be trying to look forward, right?
- 55:20SPEAKER_04: That's a massive big habit.
- 55:22SPEAKER_04: That's a good habit to have.
- 55:24SPEAKER_04: But if you're only looking to build up with this new we got a build up line, we gotta this or this, this is why your podcast resonates with me, because sometimes I hate soccer because of the build-out line or whatever.
- 55:36SPEAKER_04: Um, and now MLS is into style points too, which is a whole nother ballgame, but yeah, yeah.
- 55:44SPEAKER_04: Um, but looking into those things, are those style points?
- 55:47SPEAKER_04: Let's look at MLS next now.
- 55:49SPEAKER_04: Are those style points now teaching kids, okay?
- 55:52SPEAKER_04: You might go to Cincinnati and lose or win six to one, right?
- 55:56SPEAKER_04: And then lose because of style points, right?
- 55:59SPEAKER_04: And I think when that starts to happen, you're like, you're a kid, you know, like I'm 12 years old.
- 56:05SPEAKER_04: I'm 12 years old.
- 56:06SPEAKER_04: I just went to Cincinnati, we beat the crap out of him.
- 56:08SPEAKER_04: I lost six, we won six to one, but I lost because of style.
- 56:16SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 56:17SPEAKER_01: Like, what are we talking about?
- 56:18SPEAKER_04: How are you quantifying style?
- 56:20SPEAKER_01: Right, right?
- 56:21SPEAKER_04: If you're really looking at it, are you going, is my style um more like Roberto De Zerbi as opposed to Pep Guardiola?
- 56:29SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 56:29SPEAKER_04: And how are you guys showing me the metrics?
- 56:32SPEAKER_04: You know what I mean?
- 56:33SPEAKER_04: Like, I think that's our evolution that we consistently see with when we go back to what we started with, was you know, the bad habits, right?
- 56:42SPEAKER_04: Is that what's the style points doing?
- 56:45SPEAKER_04: Is that is that training a good habit?
- 56:47SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 56:48SPEAKER_01: And I I had a major problem with how the DA went around uh went about some things because it took away the tactical awareness, especially in and this is like personal with goalkeepers, right?
- 57:04SPEAKER_01: A goalkeeper makes a clean catch on a corner kick.
- 57:09SPEAKER_01: What should you do?
- 57:10SPEAKER_01: I've always taught my keepers counter.
- 57:13SPEAKER_01: As soon as you do that, counter.
- 57:16SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm at a DA game, and it's a MLS Academy, and they're playing a non-MLS Academy, and non-MLS Academy goalkeeper catches it clean and tries to counter with a punt, and they almost score off of it.
- 57:34SPEAKER_01: Goalkeeper gets yelled at for punting.
- 57:36SPEAKER_01: It's like, what are we doing?
- 57:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, what style points.
- 57:41SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 57:41SPEAKER_01: It's like, oh, oh, we're supposed to allow them to get back to their retreating line, and then we have to play at six feet.
- 57:49SPEAKER_01: And then that's our because we're our style of play.
- 57:52SPEAKER_01: Because it's development overwinning.
- 57:54SPEAKER_01: Bull.
- 57:54SPEAKER_01: Like, oh my god, I'm gonna kill you.
- 57:56SPEAKER_04: Like, seriously.
- 57:57SPEAKER_04: So now we're manufacturing the game again?
- 57:59SPEAKER_04: Yeah, what are we doing?
- 58:00SPEAKER_01: Instead of teaching tactical awareness of like what the goalkeeper should do, yeah.
- 58:05SPEAKER_01: Drives me up the wall, man.
- 58:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it is it is truly like manufacturing, right?
- 58:11SPEAKER_04: And and it's like humans getting together in a group of group of dudes sitting down going, how do we play more?
- 58:18SPEAKER_04: You know what?
- 58:19SPEAKER_04: I got it.
- 58:19SPEAKER_04: I got it, buddy.
- 58:20SPEAKER_04: Let's go with this, let's go with style points.
- 58:23SPEAKER_01: It's almost treating games like training sessions.
- 58:25SPEAKER_01: It's like, oh, you know what?
- 58:26SPEAKER_01: We really need to work on the back, uh build out of the back today, so we're never allowed to punt, we're not going long on anything, we're just doing this.
- 58:34SPEAKER_01: And it's like, okay.
- 58:36SPEAKER_01: What I can't stand is the possession tracking and the completed passes, but it's all in your defensive third.
- 58:46SPEAKER_01: And then what happens when they do build out?
- 58:48SPEAKER_01: I had this conversation yesterday.
- 58:50SPEAKER_01: What happens when they get to half?
- 58:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 58:54SPEAKER_01: It's usually so patient, so patient, so patient.
- 58:58SPEAKER_01: But when it crosses half, freak out go, we get tw we get 24 seconds, and we get there's a shot clock.
- 59:05SPEAKER_01: And it's like basketball.
- 59:06SPEAKER_01: And it's like, what oh man.
- 59:08SPEAKER_01: That's uh that's why it's called I Hate Soccer.
- 59:11SPEAKER_01: This is stupid stuff like that.
- 59:12SPEAKER_01: There's thousands of reasons why uh we get in our own way a little bit, and we take away playing.
- 59:20SPEAKER_01: And I don't know.
- 59:23SPEAKER_01: This episode is brought to you by Grips Smacker Snacks.
- 59:27SPEAKER_01: Spending$55 on Perf Sunmax when there are other options available.
- 59:33SPEAKER_01: Grip Smacker was founded by a father and someone who were sick of paying$55 for snacks.
- 59:42SPEAKER_01: Go to Gripsmacker.com and use promo code IHATSmacker for 15% off.
- 59:48SPEAKER_01: That's gripsmacker.com, promo code I hate somecker.
- 59:52SPEAKER_04: It's a little counterproductive at times, right?
- 59:55SPEAKER_04: It's it's giving kids options and not taking them away and then consistently working on it over and over again.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_01: Repetition.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there's I mean, how big how big are you guys on repetition and what and everything that you do?
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you know, I think within our curriculum, we get going uh a 10-week revolving curriculum, and and in that process, you know, there's two weeks of of passing that are in there throughout our 10-week curriculum.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_04: There's two weeks of dribbling in there, right?
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_04: There's two weeks of shooting, and there's different things that are in there as well.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_04: So I think those are the major components that we see in defending, right?
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_04: So we put some time into what specifics we're looking at from shooting, finishing, bending, outside, whatever it may be, right?
- 1:00:43SPEAKER_04: Um, and that becomes our consistency.
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_04: So when people sign up, we are talking about 10 weeks.
- 1:00:51SPEAKER_04: I'm not saying, hey, you get here for hey, Tuesday, you get here and we're gonna be better by Wednesday.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_04: It's not happening, right?
- 1:00:59SPEAKER_04: That's that's not our monster.
- 1:01:01SPEAKER_01: I mean, sometimes it's not even the 10 weeks, you know.
- 1:01:04SPEAKER_01: I mean, depending on the lift and and whatnot, it takes years.
- 1:01:07SPEAKER_01: How many times?
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 1:01:09SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I think I think you're right.
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_04: It's just a matter of, you know, it's it's not 10 weeks, right?
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_04: We're gonna help you.
- 1:01:17SPEAKER_04: It's gonna be it's gonna be a foundation.
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_04: It's it's probably not a year, you know what I mean?
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_04: We're we're not the end all the all answer to all of this, right?
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_04: And neither are the clubs, and neither are the performance trainers, and neither are the video nails guys, right?
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_04: It can't be everything to everyone.
- 1:01:33SPEAKER_04: That's that's the that's the nature of this.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_04: But when we look at it all, how do we now get back to this part of the conversation?
- 1:01:39SPEAKER_04: We're going, how do we get these kids some rest?
- 1:01:41SPEAKER_01: No kidding, right?
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_04: So it's that's a challenging part, I think.
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_01: I I had a young player in one of my last sessions in Buffalo, and I was like, when was your last off day?
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_01: And this was uh I think this is right around Thanksgiving time.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_01: I was like, when was your last off day?
- 1:02:05SPEAKER_01: And she's like Halloween, and I'm like, that was 27 days ago.
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_01: That was your last day without anything?
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_01: She's like, yeah, I think so.
- 1:02:18SPEAKER_01: Uh it's it's crazy, and it's crazy that to uh try to manage it and whatnot.
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_04: That's happy, it's a lot of work, isn't it?
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_04: Like being a student full time, trying to have a friend base full time, doing your day-to-day, you're trying to be in the system of your club team, trying to work on being recruited.
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_04: It's a monster.
- 1:02:38SPEAKER_04: It's a lot of pressure.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_04: I think it's I think it's a very real conversation, you know.
- 1:02:42SPEAKER_04: And and when I look at, you know, like what the Michigan Hawks are doing right now, like they've brought in a person that works on the mental part of things, right?
- 1:02:53SPEAKER_04: Oh, really?
- 1:02:53SPEAKER_04: Which which helps the understanding of the game and they go through nutrition and they go through those little extra pieces.
- 1:02:59SPEAKER_04: Good, right?
- 1:03:00SPEAKER_04: And I think you have to get now to that place, right?
- 1:03:03SPEAKER_04: We need a nutritionist, we need a we need a performance guy, we need a mental health, and and that's what parents want.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_04: We need all pieces, right?
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_04: And and I think when you're doing it like that, professionalizes what you're doing, and that's what everyone's talking about.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_04: When we go to these clubs, it's like, hey, is this a professional system?
- 1:03:20SPEAKER_04: And you need all of it because to be honest, right?
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_04: Again, you can't be everything.
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_01: I've had a couple conversations with some high-level players' parents recently, and they're watching some of the episodes of some of the clubs that I've had out here, and they're like, Oh, no wonder why you talked about Michigan like you have.
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_01: And man, if if my daughter was at that club from the start she'd be even better.
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_01: It's like Yeah, because they're a little bit more professional and they can they get away with a lot less because there's more options.
- 1:03:56SPEAKER_01: You could just you could just go somewhere else.
- 1:03:59SPEAKER_01: And I can leave uh I can leave, you know, Liverpool and I can go to Hawks, or I can you know you know, leave Jags and I can go to Wolves if I'm on the boys' side or whatnot, you know.
- 1:04:14SPEAKER_01: And and I think those options but the do you ever feel and and I guess this is I'm talking to the dad the soccer dad right now.
- 1:04:28SPEAKER_01: Uh oh.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_01: Um okay.
- 1:04:33SPEAKER_01: And I've seen the uh I I dealt with this a lot with flash players.
- 1:04:39SPEAKER_01: The environment is so cutthroat.
- 1:04:42SPEAKER_01: Uh maybe not cutthroat is the right word, but it is intense.
- 1:04:46SPEAKER_01: It is intense.
- 1:04:48SPEAKER_01: And then they would come into playmaker and they would feel free, and they would feel like more relaxed, maybe more honest.
- 1:04:59SPEAKER_01: Too many times in my experience, I had players say, I only enjoy soccer when I'm at Playmaker.
- 1:05:05SPEAKER_01: A lot of coaches would take that as a compliment.
- 1:05:08SPEAKER_01: I got so upset when I would hear to that from players.
- 1:05:12SPEAKER_01: It's like, that means that we're doing something wrong, guys.
- 1:05:15SPEAKER_01: We're doing something wrong.
- 1:05:17SPEAKER_01: If the only time that they enjoy soccer is when they're with their supplemental trainer, it's like I don't know about that.
- 1:05:25SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I think it's I think it's a challenge, right?
- 1:05:27SPEAKER_04: I mean, there's no easy answer to any of that.
- 1:05:31SPEAKER_04: And when I sign my daughter up, or my daughter signs herself up for whatever she's doing, right?
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_04: Then I'm on board.
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_04: And what that means to me is like I'm an I'm supporting them, right?
- 1:05:42SPEAKER_04: No matter who they are and what they are.
- 1:05:44SPEAKER_04: My daughter believes in them and feels trust within them to feel safety to do whatever she's doing, then I'm it.
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_04: And and I think we found that, you know, this the last year, and my daughter's been on a national championship team, and you know, it's been a great experience.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_04: Experience and can't say enough good about what they're doing.
- 1:06:03SPEAKER_04: You know, but for us, it's the big value is trust and safety.
- 1:06:10SPEAKER_04: And does she want to continue to play?
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_04: Does she love this?
- 1:06:13SPEAKER_04: You know, and if she does, fantastic.
- 1:06:15SPEAKER_04: I'm in.
- 1:06:16SPEAKER_04: Whatever you want, we're gonna keep going.
- 1:06:18SPEAKER_04: Right?
- 1:06:18SPEAKER_04: But I'm not gonna be a guy on a side that's playing the game, right?
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_04: I want to go sit in a corner, I want to watch my kid, usually sitting on a goalpost by myself, right?
- 1:06:28SPEAKER_04: Clapping as soon as she scores a goal.
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_04: I'm not up there screaming at her or anything, right?
- 1:06:32SPEAKER_04: I'm not giving her any directions, right?
- 1:06:35SPEAKER_04: It's that's big value to me.
- 1:06:37SPEAKER_04: Like, I want to I want to enjoy her her progress, I want to see it go.
- 1:06:40SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 1:06:41SPEAKER_04: You know, like if whatever direction it goes in, I'm just there to support.
- 1:06:45SPEAKER_01: Do you ever get that from your players in here?
- 1:06:48SPEAKER_01: Ever of like this is a breath of fresh air, thank God.
- 1:06:54SPEAKER_04: Uh yeah, yeah, we get quite a bit, you know.
- 1:06:56SPEAKER_04: It and uh, you know, we get sometimes a lot, a lot of people come in with their issues, and I'm not talking to them about their issues, you know, like they got some type of problem with their coach or the club or whatever's going on, and I'm like, hey, what we're that's not what we do.
- 1:07:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:07:15SPEAKER_04: So no matter how you want to approach that, we're we're training.
- 1:07:18SPEAKER_04: Yeah, they have like a laundry list of my coach gave me this plan through my IDP, and I'm like, okay, just let me let me work with your child, right?
- 1:07:26SPEAKER_04: Let's just take this open and honestly, and I don't have to assess them, we can just train them.
- 1:07:31SPEAKER_04: And then throughout this process, I'll give you a little bit of feedback on what we could do extra, right?
- 1:07:36SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 1:07:37SPEAKER_04: Um, so I think I think that's a monster for kids now is like they have these laundry lists, they sit down with their coaches or directors, whatever it is now.
- 1:07:48SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 1:07:48SPEAKER_04: Um, but they get these IDPs, right?
- 1:07:50SPEAKER_04: And you've talked about it before in the podcast, right?
- 1:07:53SPEAKER_04: The kids sit there and there's a coach and a kid sitting across the table, or the coach sitting over here and a parent and a kid sitting over there.
- 1:08:00SPEAKER_04: And as they're sitting there, you know, the coach is giving the directions, and that kid's just slowly sinking in his seat, right?
- 1:08:05SPEAKER_04: And that parents like doing the nodding, right?
- 1:08:08SPEAKER_04: Because that kid's probably most likely hearing that at home, right?
- 1:08:11SPEAKER_04: He's just getting like reiterated whatever type of thing he needs to grow on.
- 1:08:16SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 1:08:17SPEAKER_04: Meanwhile, in those IDPs, his kids aren't getting really talked to, right?
- 1:08:20SPEAKER_04: And it's being like talked at as opposed to talked to.
- 1:08:24SPEAKER_04: Like, what what can what can we do to help you as opposed to, you know, the opposite, which is we gotta do this, we gotta do that, we gotta do this, right?
- 1:08:33SPEAKER_04: You know, I think that's what comes to us within the IDP IDP plan, right?
- 1:08:38SPEAKER_04: Sometimes we get, you know, Columbus Crew kid come in and give us their whole sheet that they received, they received.
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_04: Um that's that's helpful.
- 1:08:47SPEAKER_04: I think that gives us a perspective of what Columbus crew is looking for.
- 1:08:50SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 1:08:51SPEAKER_04: If a kid's 10 or 11 years old and they're giving me a sheet, right?
- 1:08:54SPEAKER_04: It's like, okay.
- 1:08:55SPEAKER_04: I mean, sounds about right.
- 1:08:57SPEAKER_04: We're gonna be on that trajectory, but you know, they they're so focused on that sheet now.
- 1:09:02SPEAKER_04: Is that kid, you know, going for a run before they show up?
- 1:09:06SPEAKER_04: Are they are they doing a performance training program before they get here and they're doing this?
- 1:09:10SPEAKER_04: You know, it's like that loaded situation again we were talking about, right?
- 1:09:14SPEAKER_04: Get a loaded player.
- 1:09:16SPEAKER_04: Are these IDP plans to the perspective of helping this kid develop a plan as opposed to this is your problem?
- 1:09:27SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 1:09:27SPEAKER_02: Right, exactly.
- 1:09:30SPEAKER_04: Right?
- 1:09:30SPEAKER_04: Like, hey, hey, buddy, how about Monday we start looking at this?
- 1:09:35SPEAKER_04: How about Tuesday?
- 1:09:37SPEAKER_04: You know what?
- 1:09:37SPEAKER_04: Maybe we could drop off and we do a little bit of performance.
- 1:09:40SPEAKER_04: We have a little bit of active recovery for rest on Wednesday.
- 1:09:43SPEAKER_04: How about that?
- 1:09:44SPEAKER_04: What are we doing for flexibility and mobility?
- 1:09:46SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 1:09:47SPEAKER_04: Right, are we looking at those things?
- 1:09:49SPEAKER_04: Like these kids are just loaded, loaded, loaded.
- 1:09:53SPEAKER_04: That's how it feels to me, anyways.
- 1:09:55SPEAKER_01: How when you get a new player, but they know somebody that you've worked with for a while, how often are they expecting like instant results?
- 1:10:06SPEAKER_01: It's like, hey, I've worked with her for four years, you've been here for four minutes, I'm not gonna be able to turn you into what she can now do.
- 1:10:16SPEAKER_01: You gotta give me some time.
- 1:10:18SPEAKER_01: And how hard is that to communicate to some parents?
- 1:10:22SPEAKER_01: Um or players.
- 1:10:24SPEAKER_04: You know, I I think the timetable is irrelevant.
- 1:10:29SPEAKER_04: You know, like everyone has their own trajectory.
- 1:10:33SPEAKER_04: No matter what's going on with all this, right?
- 1:10:35SPEAKER_04: Everyone wants the quick fix, the diet pill, the what is it, Ozempic?
- 1:10:40SPEAKER_04: Yeah, everyone wants some Ozempic now, right?
- 1:10:42SPEAKER_04: And that doesn't exist in soccer, right?
- 1:10:45SPEAKER_04: And I think it's it's the process is never pretty, and everyone's just different.
- 1:10:50SPEAKER_04: And I think everyone wants to identify it, and that's going probably back to the IDE IDP plan, right?
- 1:10:55SPEAKER_04: So that's how they try to identify it, but at the same time, it's different.
- 1:10:59SPEAKER_04: That's why it's not like you can do this on this day and this on that day, and active recovery.
- 1:11:05SPEAKER_04: So we have people that come in that give us that laundry list.
- 1:11:10SPEAKER_04: They want to we have a personal training package and we work on specifics with those people, right?
- 1:11:15SPEAKER_04: A 10-week personal training package, and then they want to work through and identify how we can improve that specific attribute.
- 1:11:22SPEAKER_04: And we we work on that.
- 1:11:24SPEAKER_04: Um, I think over time, as it grows, I don't think you get to say it's two years, three years, four years.
- 1:11:34SPEAKER_04: And I don't want to own a single player.
- 1:11:36SPEAKER_04: I think the clubs try and do that.
- 1:11:38SPEAKER_04: I think everyone tries to do that.
- 1:11:39SPEAKER_04: I coach this pro player, this college player, this trust me, I've coached plenty, and I don't want to be out here and name drop it.
- 1:11:47SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 1:11:48SPEAKER_04: Like, why why do we always gotta be like owners of this or that?
- 1:11:52SPEAKER_04: I don't own anybody.
- 1:11:53SPEAKER_04: It's a sales knock.
- 1:11:53SPEAKER_04: I developed that kid.
- 1:11:54SPEAKER_04: That's a sales pitch.
- 1:11:56SPEAKER_04: Let's be realistic, right?
- 1:11:57SPEAKER_01: Do you know who I've developed?
- 1:11:59SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 1:11:59SPEAKER_04: I got this quote.
- 1:12:01SPEAKER_04: Okay, cool, awesome.
- 1:12:03SPEAKER_01: When I got to Flash, that was one of the first questions I asked.
- 1:12:06SPEAKER_01: Like, I got I I grew pretty close with like Sam Uis and uh Heavy Dog Hemper.
- 1:12:11SPEAKER_01: They were UCLA, they just came off a national title, they won the U, I think, 23 World Cup.
- 1:12:17SPEAKER_01: And I asked them, I go, how many coaches have had a real uh impact on you?
- 1:12:22SPEAKER_01: And they both said like nine or ten coaches.
- 1:12:25SPEAKER_01: It's like, yeah, you weren't developed by one person, right?
- 1:12:29SPEAKER_01: But sometimes just that one person takes all the credit, and it's like, okay, guy, yeah, all right, yeah.
- 1:12:35SPEAKER_01: It's funny, yeah.
- 1:12:36SPEAKER_01: And then when somebody tries to give me their laundry list or their resume, and like, yeah, I have I've developed her and I developed her, and then I put her here, and it's like, yeah, I don't care, dude.
- 1:12:48SPEAKER_01: Like, I just do not care.
- 1:12:50SPEAKER_01: I oh man.
- 1:12:52SPEAKER_01: So with your daughter, does okay, we talk you've talked about the rest a lot.
- 1:13:00SPEAKER_01: Do you ever have to be like, you're taking today off, and then she pushes back, like, I'm fine.
- 1:13:08SPEAKER_01: Or vice versa.
- 1:13:09SPEAKER_01: Does that ever be like that?
- 1:13:10SPEAKER_01: There's a little bit of that for sure.
- 1:13:12SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:13:13SPEAKER_04: It's it's a it's really delicate being a soccer parent with the knowledge behind doing what you do, right?
- 1:13:20SPEAKER_04: It's it's trying to make sure that you're supporting and not being the the main guide, right?
- 1:13:26SPEAKER_04: Making sure that the motivation's intrinsic.
- 1:13:29SPEAKER_04: And you know, I think we I do my best, right?
- 1:13:33SPEAKER_04: I'm sure there's at times I don't do it perfect, you know what I mean?
- 1:13:36SPEAKER_04: And and we're just trying to do it right at all times.
- 1:13:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:13:39SPEAKER_04: You know, I'm a first time it's been that I've been a parent, right?
- 1:13:42SPEAKER_04: So it's like I'm making mistakes, and like at some point in time, I'm like, hey, daughter, I'm not bad.
- 1:13:48SPEAKER_04: No, it's it's not you, it's me.
- 1:13:50SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 1:13:51SPEAKER_04: Because again, I think responsibility is inward, right?
- 1:13:54SPEAKER_04: Yeah, like even as parents, like, okay, back away, make sure that they get what they need and make sure they're doing what they do.
- 1:14:01SPEAKER_01: How many, how many nights a week are they training at Hawks?
- 1:14:04SPEAKER_01: Um, usually I think they're right around four ish, right?
- 1:14:09SPEAKER_04: It depends.
- 1:14:09SPEAKER_04: And then they've got games and scrimmages, they do a great job, you know.
- 1:14:13SPEAKER_04: They they really get after it.
- 1:14:14SPEAKER_04: And um, I can't say enough good about the experiences that she's had there, you know, within she's been there for a year now, a little over a year, right?
- 1:14:22SPEAKER_04: And she'll end up going to England soon, gonna go play at I think it's ever too.
- 1:14:29SPEAKER_01: That's what the ECNL.
- 1:14:30SPEAKER_01: ECNL is like throwing putting that on, right?
- 1:14:32SPEAKER_04: They won the national championship, and because they won the national championship, they're pushing them down the road, giving an opportunity.
- 1:14:38SPEAKER_04: And you know, kudos to the Hawks for taking it on, right?
- 1:14:41SPEAKER_04: Because it's something different, something exciting.
- 1:14:44SPEAKER_04: You always look forward to it, right?
- 1:14:46SPEAKER_04: For sure.
- 1:14:46SPEAKER_04: Um, it's it's a challenge, man.
- 1:14:48SPEAKER_01: It'll be interesting to see how those games go.
- 1:14:51SPEAKER_01: To see what's going on over there because now they're paying attention and they're putting a lot of resources into the women's game now.
- 1:14:57SPEAKER_01: We're dropping on our play.
- 1:14:58SPEAKER_01: We trust the coach, game 100%.
- 1:15:00SPEAKER_01: How does Hawks travel?
- 1:15:01SPEAKER_01: Do you have to go to all the games?
- 1:15:03SPEAKER_01: Because there okay, so there's a club in in Buffalo.
- 1:15:07SPEAKER_01: Well, Western New York, it's in Rochester, it's RY, they're in the MLS next and the Girls Academy.
- 1:15:12SPEAKER_01: What they do is they pay a little bit more, but all their flights or buses are included, and the parents don't have to travel.
- 1:15:23SPEAKER_01: It's a little bit more expensive, and it's sticker shock, but then you could just get so much more because every meal on the road is is paid for, every hotel and every like bus is paid for, and the parents don't have to go and have that added cost.
- 1:15:40SPEAKER_01: Does Hawks do anything like that where they just load up everybody on a bus occasionally and then they'll go down to Eclipse or whatever?
- 1:15:49SPEAKER_04: You know, um not since we've been there.
- 1:15:53SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 1:15:53SPEAKER_04: So pretty much my wife and I go everywhere because she's our only child.
- 1:15:58SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 1:15:59SPEAKER_04: Um so I don't I they'll fly together as a group, right, as I go over to England.
- 1:16:05SPEAKER_04: Um that that's a big piece of the puzzle.
- 1:16:07SPEAKER_04: But I think it's based upon how they put it together, right?
- 1:16:12SPEAKER_04: And how they see it's fit.
- 1:16:13SPEAKER_04: Um and I just follow their mantra, right?
- 1:16:17SPEAKER_04: Again, I'm I'm there to support, I'm not, I'm not there to critique or figure it out.
- 1:16:21SPEAKER_04: It's their own wheelhouse, and I don't act to even know it.
- 1:16:24SPEAKER_04: Girls' soccer to me is an entirely different monster.
- 1:16:27SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:16:27SPEAKER_04: I I consistently coach boys up until they're 18.
- 1:16:31SPEAKER_04: Yeah, right.
- 1:16:32SPEAKER_04: Some high-end boys all the time.
- 1:16:34SPEAKER_04: And you know, I always got back into coaching girls like steadily under the ages of 13.
- 1:16:40SPEAKER_04: I think that's a lot of a lot of fun.
- 1:16:42SPEAKER_01: And I think that is my most fun.
- 1:16:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, for sure, for sure.
- 1:16:45SPEAKER_01: That that next 10 to 13.
- 1:16:47SPEAKER_04: That next age group they're after.
- 1:16:49SPEAKER_04: That's that's a specific skill set that isn't expert, right?
- 1:16:54SPEAKER_04: And I think that's very challenging, right?
- 1:16:57SPEAKER_04: It's trying to figure out all those moving pieces in there, and I don't have the experience in it to know it from the aspect of what the day-to-day, right?
- 1:17:05SPEAKER_04: Day to day, what are they going through?
- 1:17:07SPEAKER_04: Like Emma Hayes is now evolving coaching curriculum and trying to change the whole perspective on how women are being approached, right?
- 1:17:15SPEAKER_04: Throughout the entire curriculum.
- 1:17:17SPEAKER_04: And I think that shows you that we're still like just round in the corner, yeah, in my perspective, right?
- 1:17:24SPEAKER_04: Like we're starting to see some nations start to catch up, right?
- 1:17:27SPEAKER_04: That already have principles of play involved and systems in Spain and whatever.
- 1:17:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and they have the culture that they're born into, and that's where that second generation and third generation comes into.
- 1:17:41SPEAKER_01: And who do you have this weekend in Arizona?
- 1:17:44SPEAKER_01: Ooh, that's a that's a cusp.
- 1:17:48SPEAKER_01: Flash, who's a decent that's a decent age group.
- 1:17:51SPEAKER_04: They got a gauntlet.
- 1:17:52SPEAKER_04: They have slammers, yeah.
- 1:17:53SPEAKER_04: They have legends, and they have Beach.
- 1:17:57SPEAKER_01: I think I think Flash has slammers as well.
- 1:17:59SPEAKER_01: It's not it's not like a round robin or anything like that.
- 1:18:02SPEAKER_01: It's just like it's just a schedule, it's just a showcase.
- 1:18:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, how like have you started the recruiting process and all that?
- 1:18:08SPEAKER_01: It started, yeah.
- 1:18:10SPEAKER_04: Well, you know, again, it's it's what she wants, whatever my daughter wants.
- 1:18:14SPEAKER_04: I'm not I'm just there to support it.
- 1:18:16SPEAKER_04: So, you know, when I look at it from the outside in, she's she's identifying what she likes, and we're giving you the options when we're in these environments, when we're in California, when we're in Arizona, when we're in Kansas City to go look at these colleges, right?
- 1:18:30SPEAKER_04: Like we've done with the Hawks, they've done tours and they've done at Louisville and Dean Ward at Xavier and all these different colleges that gave us exposure to walk in and talk to coaches and quote QA's.
- 1:18:42SPEAKER_04: I mean, it's massive, just a network by itself, you know.
- 1:18:46SPEAKER_04: And I think you know, you don't get that experience from an early onset, 14, 15, 16 years old, you know, to see these coaches and talk to Indiana.
- 1:18:56SPEAKER_04: And Josh Reif comes to a game and you know has has a few words and have these big combines that they have over a hundred and some i coaches.
- 1:19:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:19:04SPEAKER_04: And then they have multiple networks where you go to the next event and there's a hundred and some odd coaches, you know.
- 1:19:09SPEAKER_04: So the whole recruiting network is massive, as you know.
- 1:19:15SPEAKER_04: Um, I think we just support it, man, the best I can, and we consistently stay with her on what she's she's feeling and you know, keep her on task of what is the next thing, right?
- 1:19:28SPEAKER_04: Because I think that's that's part of that time management piece that you do have to help as a parent, right?
- 1:19:34SPEAKER_04: It's like, okay, you do school, you do your trainings, you do your performance, you do your yoga, whatever it is, right?
- 1:19:41SPEAKER_04: Do you need do you need to have someone monitor your recruiting profile because it's some work?
- 1:19:48SPEAKER_04: Right, right.
- 1:19:48SPEAKER_04: And then are you the one sending out your emails?
- 1:19:51SPEAKER_04: Are you responding to the coaches?
- 1:19:53SPEAKER_04: Right?
- 1:19:54SPEAKER_04: Doing the extra necessary things.
- 1:19:55SPEAKER_04: Are you able to communicate with coaches, right?
- 1:19:57SPEAKER_04: That's a monster, right?
- 1:19:59SPEAKER_01: So how you talked about yoga and stuff.
- 1:20:03SPEAKER_01: Uh is that part of your mobility stuff here?
- 1:20:07SPEAKER_01: Like I know that you're big in bands and stuff like that, like TB12 method.
- 1:20:11SPEAKER_04: Sure, sure, sure.
- 1:20:12SPEAKER_04: I mean, pliability is everything, isn't it?
- 1:20:14SPEAKER_04: Right?
- 1:20:14SPEAKER_04: I mean, Tom Tom was on something.
- 1:20:17SPEAKER_04: Yeah, he can still play.
- 1:20:19SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no doubt, no doubt.
- 1:20:21SPEAKER_04: AI, Tom, no.
- 1:20:23SPEAKER_04: Um, so I think you know, yoga's a monster, right?
- 1:20:28SPEAKER_04: We want to make sure that uh we reduced any room for injury all together.
- 1:20:34SPEAKER_04: So I'm always big on the whole rest component and active rest being the best rest, right?
- 1:20:40SPEAKER_04: When we come to active recovery, it's like hip mobility over hurdles, it's going over under hurdles, it's you know, working on leg swings, it's small things like that.
- 1:20:51SPEAKER_04: And then we get into the yoga and Pilates of it.
- 1:20:54SPEAKER_04: Um, we don't do yoga here, right?
- 1:20:57SPEAKER_04: It is a is a goal of mine, but obviously another task to take on.
- 1:21:01SPEAKER_04: So I'm good to be doing the task that we are doing, trying to be this small, fancy pizza place that we are, you know.
- 1:21:07SPEAKER_04: So um I think that's that's really a lot more work than I'm looking for.
- 1:21:13SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:21:13SPEAKER_04: Because you you need a special day-to-day operations, a special yoga lady, and I don't know if what you know about yoga people, but it's a little bit challenging.
- 1:21:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, for sure.
- 1:21:23SPEAKER_01: And it's hard to rent out your space to somebody that wants to do yoga unless you you know have it as one of your options.
- 1:21:31SPEAKER_01: Because a lot of the like I tried to rent out to uh a yoga um teacher, and she's like, I just go to the park.
- 1:21:40SPEAKER_01: I was like, Oh yeah, okay.
- 1:21:42SPEAKER_04: You know who did it for the longest and has been doing it for the longest is Dom Skluna.
- 1:21:46SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 1:21:47SPEAKER_04: I mean, hey Dom's gonna be on the show.
- 1:21:49SPEAKER_01: I am getting Dom on Dom is on the show.
- 1:21:51SPEAKER_01: Dom's great character, man.
- 1:21:53SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 1:21:54SPEAKER_01: I love that guy.
- 1:21:55SPEAKER_04: And you're in New York, and you're in New York, so Lamar Peters is another guy, right?
- 1:21:59SPEAKER_04: He's at Cornell.
- 1:22:00SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:22:00SPEAKER_01: Um I have a couple players at Cornell.
- 1:22:02SPEAKER_04: Yeah, Lamar's the assistant.
- 1:22:03SPEAKER_04: He's a good dude.
- 1:22:04SPEAKER_04: Really good dude.
- 1:22:05SPEAKER_04: Lamar.
- 1:22:05SPEAKER_04: Yeah, really.
- 1:22:06SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 1:22:07SPEAKER_04: Um Lamar on the troll side or on the men's side?
- 1:22:10SPEAKER_04: Uh I don't know the answer to that.
- 1:22:11SPEAKER_04: I just came as assistant.
- 1:22:13SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 1:22:13SPEAKER_04: So Lamar, truth be told, was the real originator of the next level name.
- 1:22:19SPEAKER_04: Really?
- 1:22:20SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you can ask Lamar about that.
- 1:22:22SPEAKER_04: 1996 to 2000, he had next level in Washington, DC.
- 1:22:27SPEAKER_04: And then he brought it back.
- 1:22:29SPEAKER_04: And that came now to Waza, who obviously dumb Mario run that bad, that bad boy.
- 1:22:37SPEAKER_04: And then uh he had next level going through there while he was at Waza.
- 1:22:42SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 1:22:43SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:22:44SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 1:22:45SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:22:45SPEAKER_04: No, Aaron Aaron's a good dude, so I I always always throw a little bit of static this way, you know.
- 1:22:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:22:52SPEAKER_01: Aaron will be on here soon.
- 1:22:54SPEAKER_04: Yeah, he's good to do.
- 1:22:55SPEAKER_04: He's good to do.
- 1:22:56SPEAKER_01: I mean, but okay, so you have spring break clinics coming up next week.
- 1:23:04SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 1:23:04SPEAKER_01: That's next week, right?
- 1:23:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:23:06SPEAKER_01: It is just next week.
- 1:23:07SPEAKER_01: 330, 331, 4-1, and 4-2.
- 1:23:11SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we do shooting and finishing on 3 30 and 331.
- 1:23:14SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 1:23:14SPEAKER_04: And we do dribbling and defending on the next two.
- 1:23:17SPEAKER_04: We do goalkeeping all the way through.
- 1:23:19SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:23:19SPEAKER_04: So we actually rent a facility across the street because there's more space for more numbers outside.
- 1:23:23SPEAKER_04: It's across the street.
- 1:23:24SPEAKER_04: Toka, Nova East.
- 1:23:26unknown: Right.
- 1:23:26SPEAKER_04: So here?
- 1:23:27SPEAKER_04: Yeah, the old soccer zone.
- 1:23:28SPEAKER_04: Oh, okay.
- 1:23:29SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so we did that.
- 1:23:31SPEAKER_04: Um, we're also gonna add, what did I say goalkeeping?
- 1:23:34SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah.
- 1:23:35SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 1:23:35SPEAKER_04: Dan DX gives me.
- 1:23:36SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:23:37SPEAKER_04: Dan gives me the old school mantra, you know.
- 1:23:40SPEAKER_04: One of the best stories ever.
- 1:23:41SPEAKER_04: And we're doing uh NSCAA premier diploma or something like that.
- 1:23:47SPEAKER_04: Yeah, right.
- 1:23:48SPEAKER_04: It's my favorite course.
- 1:23:49SPEAKER_04: It's me and me and Dan.
- 1:23:50SPEAKER_04: And I've had uh Tony DeCio as my instructor the the whole the whole time.
- 1:23:55SPEAKER_04: And you know, Tony's Tony was a good dude.
- 1:23:58SPEAKER_04: I liked him a lot.
- 1:23:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you know, he had a lot of good value.
- 1:24:00SPEAKER_04: But Dan and Tony are going back after back after, back and forth.
- 1:24:04SPEAKER_04: If you know anything about Dan, Dan's super good dude, but he's got a lot, he's got a lot of his mind, right?
- 1:24:09SPEAKER_04: Yeah, a lot of things, good things to say.
- 1:24:11SPEAKER_04: So it was about hand position, right?
- 1:24:13SPEAKER_04: It's like hand position where it starts.
- 1:24:15SPEAKER_04: Does it start here or is it just start here, right on the sides?
- 1:24:18SPEAKER_04: So it was like this conversation between Dan and Tony DeCio was back and forth for an hour.
- 1:24:24SPEAKER_04: I'm telling you what, I'm pretty sure Dan won, but at the end of it, I was completely confused whether or not any any any any position used.
- 1:24:32SPEAKER_04: So, you know, and Tony wasn't budgeting.
- 1:24:36SPEAKER_04: He was not budgeting, he's a strong-minded guy.
- 1:24:38SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it was good, it was a good conversation, but I'll always goalkeepers, man.
- 1:24:42SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:24:43SPEAKER_04: He got a different breed.
- 1:24:44SPEAKER_04: They're psychos.
- 1:24:45SPEAKER_04: Well, yeah, different breed.
- 1:24:46SPEAKER_04: That bravery runs thick, huh?
- 1:24:47SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna have Dan, I'm gonna have Dan on later in the year because uh with my partnership with the the Jags show or whatever I'm doing.
- 1:24:55SPEAKER_01: So Dan's gonna be on and later on, but yeah.
- 1:24:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, dude.
- 1:25:02SPEAKER_01: Is everything aged um split up by ages?
- 1:25:06SPEAKER_01: So you are at all at all at different ages?
- 1:25:08SPEAKER_04: Correct.
- 1:25:09SPEAKER_04: So we go everything from 2018 to 2010s, okay, birth years.
- 1:25:14SPEAKER_04: Um, and we do split them up accordingly based upon the level.
- 1:25:17SPEAKER_04: So sometimes there's a few kids that are younger that move older, sometimes a few kids that move older into the middle group, right?
- 1:25:25SPEAKER_04: In order to make it appropriate for their skill level.
- 1:25:27SPEAKER_01: Got it.
- 1:25:28SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:25:29SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 1:25:30SPEAKER_01: Um is it sevenpeaks training.com or sevenpeaks soccer training.com.
- 1:25:36SPEAKER_04: Sevenpeaksoccer training.com.
- 1:25:37SPEAKER_01: Sevenpeaksoccer training.com.
- 1:25:40SPEAKER_01: And you're in Nova.
- 1:25:42SPEAKER_01: This is Novi address, right?
- 1:25:43SPEAKER_01: It is Nova.
- 1:25:45SPEAKER_01: I I think this is where I want to be uh office-wise, like when I get a studio, because I'm coming down here basically uh every single day.
- 1:25:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, or not every single day, but for every single episode, because this is like the epicenter, and and what are we, an hour from uh Michigan State, give or take?
- 1:26:08SPEAKER_01: Maybe 40 minutes.
- 1:26:10SPEAKER_01: And then what are we to Ann Arbor?
- 1:26:12SPEAKER_01: 45 minutes.
- 1:26:14SPEAKER_01: It's about 35 minutes.
- 1:26:15SPEAKER_01: Like this is the perfect area because you get the hawks, you get the Jags, you get wolves, you have all Livonia, Plymouth, and every and the airport is right there, right?
- 1:26:26SPEAKER_01: So I mean I think this is where I uh where I'm gonna end up eventually, because like you said, and and uh well this space I said yesterday is Mecca.
- 1:26:36SPEAKER_04: We're gonna add physical therapy in here.
- 1:26:38SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 1:26:39SPEAKER_04: So there's a new company coming through, the primary performance guy's name is Bryce Groshkin.
- 1:26:45SPEAKER_04: He's gonna come take up some space, but we'll always have if you're doing day-to-day work, feel free.
- 1:26:51SPEAKER_04: Come on through, legwork somehow.
- 1:26:53SPEAKER_04: Easy.
- 1:26:54SPEAKER_01: How um do you rent out this space a lot?
- 1:26:59SPEAKER_04: No, I don't.
- 1:27:00SPEAKER_01: Good.
- 1:27:00SPEAKER_01: So uh because the and the reason why I asked is because I had uh Louis Robinson on, and he talked about how their facilities at Midwest they don't rely on any rentals, they don't rent it out.
- 1:27:16SPEAKER_01: And I run in my facility, I had to rely on rentals because it was just a one-man ban.
- 1:27:21SPEAKER_01: And why, and I and I posted this today, and why do more supplemental trainers and technical trainers and physical trainers or PT trainers have their own facilities, but clubs don't.
- 1:27:39SPEAKER_01: I know the obsession with 11v11, and oh, we need an 11v11 field.
- 1:27:43SPEAKER_01: No, you don't.
- 1:27:44SPEAKER_01: Because by the time that you put eight teams on that 11v11 field, which most clubs have to do, it's about the size of your facility anyway.
- 1:27:54SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:27:56SPEAKER_04: You know, you're on to something for sure.
- 1:27:58SPEAKER_04: I mean, it's at a point where.
- 1:28:00SPEAKER_04: it's it's pretty much there right and you're seeing it evolve all over the nation right not just you know jax picked up a little building down the street I think you know wolves hawks have wolves has developed two or three fields now yeah outside of schoolcraft there you know you see hogs has a JC Park you know has evolved that park with a turf field and has a storage system out there as well I think it's gotta be in in the horizon for big clubs like nationals right and and like like Bardo if they want to coexist out there on the same time um with without it I think obviously the price point to rent Michigan obvious is is bonkers right like Toka I think toka has gotten the game and started to price themselves out of the game and I think they're looking at you know different different ways to stay alive right like$700 an hour for a field's nonsense I don't care what environment you're in and I think that's a big part of why these prices are what they are at clubs right is that rental agreement's insane and I think you're up against a big monster to try and find space out here especially in this monster.
- 1:29:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah right this corridors bonkers Lewis was telling me that okay so his facility it's 12 it's 12,500 square feet.
- 1:29:26SPEAKER_01: Is that the new bubble or that Valkyrie Oh no this is just like a imagine two of your fields so it's one and then it's then it's netted off and then there's another one on the other side and they just have what one team on this side and then another team on that side okay and and then they just rotate through but then they have two uh outdoor fields uh turf outdoor fields that they've been using because if it's uh above 35 degrees they're outside or above 30 they're outside but he was saying that okay his rent they have saved over a hundred and thirty thousand dollars basically just by having your own facility versus what they last paid when they were renting indoor facilities and indoor space and there's no 11v11 space out in on the west side of the state I also found that's weird.
- 1:30:19SPEAKER_04: Whereas Wixham has three so yeah I don't know if it's just allocating money though that gets you to that type of facility right yeah like sounds good in theory but I think when you're a 501c3 and you got a board behind you and you got some Grand Rapids money out there that changes some things up with some open space.
- 1:30:37SPEAKER_04: You don't have a lot of open space out here.
- 1:30:39SPEAKER_01: Right you have to convert a lot of buildings that's what you you did here right that's what you gotta do.
- 1:30:45SPEAKER_04: This turned into you know this was a a really good guy one of my soccer parents that came up to me at I was at the end of coach and club and he was like hey would you be interested in the space we were renting space out in Lavonia I came in here I was like I wasn't paying up idea you know and he was like I'll put up the wall for you so we split this building in half right he runs his business on the other side called Result Co.
- 1:31:08SPEAKER_04: Um and then we got going right he came in did the lights for us put a lot of extra money in here obviously gets a decent lease out of it but yeah you know I think that's the mantra like owning one of these as opposed to buying one I don't know if the dollar point's there right now you know yeah like this is just enough where you have some flexibility flexibility excuse me to fail in some hours of the day yeah and still succeed where you're not eating it right and I think when I started the whole concept of getting this rock in it was like okay I'm I'm willing to work a little bit for free here because that's what it's gonna take right that means covering my lease building up the equipment growing this this whole system and then after I build it up am I going to start being able to benefit from that as well so I think when you buy a building like this you're talking probably closer to like nine or ten thousand dollars a month as opposed to leasing it.
- 1:32:09SPEAKER_04: Yep right and I think that becomes a little bit of a heavy hit for a business like this right so I think that's what you're starting to manage.
- 1:32:17SPEAKER_04: I was looking out in Ann Arbor and I think you know Ann Arbor's a monster it's like a a big area that's kind of untapped for technical training.
- 1:32:25SPEAKER_04: There's some technical training companies that are out there um but nothing that operates seven days a week um so we just started doing some some drop in pickup stuff out there as well um but that that price point's quite a bit higher so that means you're really in Ann Arbor?
- 1:32:43SPEAKER_04: Oh yeah versus Nova absolutely and it's all because of Michigan um yeah it's high society out there a little bit so I I think yeah if something ever jumps off in Ann Arbor there's a lot of guys that are doing the little things here and there right but to to operate something like this seven days a week right and and to get seven days a week and be in that wheelhouse you're talking each kid's paying probably sixty dollars per session as opposed to four forty or thirty five right right so I think it's a little bit different man thanks for having me oh thanks for thanks for having me as well I think this is great I think what you're doing's awesome man it's it's great it's cool having fun it's cool it's cool to watch it grow I I love seeing like the honest content and and anybody can decipher whatever they want from it.
- 1:33:37SPEAKER_04: Exactly and that's that's great.
- 1:33:38SPEAKER_04: That's all you can ask for just listen to it and like if you uh if you like that guy it's great if you don't all right tune in next week I don't know I was watching I was like man you got a little something you got a little something here he had like a GPS tactical analyst guy oh yeah got something there yeah Taca yeah yeah you have a couple college coaches out here yeah got some things and that's why I moved home man because there's so many more people to talk to yeah yeah there's so it's it's just a different animal yeah you of them being a monster Dave now is cool Dave's coming Michigan guy Dave's coming host is the Michigan guy yeah super cool you're like no one watched Hossler I'm gonna try and shut this down just a little bit but we went and watched Hasler and I tell you what he's becoming like Michigan State has something there because he's like with Izzo right you know Izzo's Izzo's a brand guy watch Izzo's teams play and every time you go from team to team with Izzo it's like the same brand of basketball it is you're like man how are you doing it consistently over and over again sometimes that can get frustrating but I'll tell you what hustlers hustler's doing the same thing out there.
- 1:34:47SPEAKER_04: Yeah it it really does seem like that right and you start to see him he tries to play right and you don't see too many college programs that are really after it like that and it's it's impressive I I would expect in the next three to four years that he's in a national championship game.
- 1:35:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah oh yeah he's going that way I'm with you yeah it's pretty cool all right brother thank you so much and uh yeah appreciate you yeah appreciate you I hate soccer
