- 0:00Every rebbie in every classroom, No one's doing it for the money.
- 0:02My father's a rebbie. I want to be Rebbie.
- 0:03I offered you a job. You did.
- 0:05You offered me this mind blowing money to come into the working
- 0:08field, but I honestly didn't even consider it.
- 0:10I don't think there's any more fulfillment than going to Thomas
- 0:13Hassan and you're dancing at his wedding.
- 0:14And he turns to you and says, Rebbie, I am who I am today
- 0:17because of you. Business or she None of your
- 0:22business. Michael, it's the None of Your
- 0:24Business podcast hosted by Michael and OSHA.
- 0:26You ever been on a podcast? No, Really.
- 0:29Yeah, OK. I'm excited then.
- 0:31I mean I've seen a few the links one I just saw.
- 0:34Yeah. What do you think?
- 0:35It's nice. It's, I mean, it's a, it's a
- 0:36beautiful organization, obviously.
- 0:38Hold on a second, you did not just there's no way you watch
- 0:41the entire podcast. I watched the the status,
- 0:45whatever a few minutes, but I watched clips of those concerts.
- 0:49They did, you know, it's nice. It's just I.
- 0:52Had to do with our concert actually.
- 0:53We spoke about it here. It was funny 'cause it was more
- 0:55like a dinner. Yeah, it was like more couches.
- 0:58She. Explained it to.
- 0:58Us yeah, couch pool, event tables, events, but they had top
- 1:01line entertainment, they had Benny Levine, Tischler.
- 1:05I mean they had the real singers.
- 1:07It wasn't like I. Love how Tischler is top line
- 1:09these days, by the way. Good for him.
- 1:10He's Yeah, he stepped it up. Yeah.
- 1:12Yeah. To be honest with you, his voice
- 1:13is just so amazing that it's just hard not to appreciate.
- 1:16It no for sure. Yeah, I was at the Haas concert
- 1:18a few years ago and Alvin Freed came on stage and he was like
- 1:22blown away from he. He's saying is he rotten?
- 1:25You know, and he was like just blown away from, from his mom
- 1:30Freed, you know, Tisha wasn't born on when Freed was was.
- 1:34But he has an amazing voice. Yeah.
- 1:36Right, that was a big compliment.
- 1:38I'm not here to promote myself at all.
- 1:40People come on podcast for different reasons.
- 1:42People have like an agenda. People have like a scuffle
- 1:44agenda. They want to get out there, they
- 1:45want to get a message out. They want to start a movement.
- 1:47They want to do. I'm not any of that.
- 1:49I just have an organization that I feel passionate about that I
- 1:52care about a lot. And it's not just the an
- 1:55organization, it's it's an idea of the Muncie camp when it's
- 1:58just really not just an organization.
- 2:00It's an idea of that every kid needs to be in camp for the
- 2:03summer. So if someone hears this and
- 2:05they want to support them as a camp fund, that's great.
- 2:07But that's not why I'm here. I'm here because the idea that
- 2:11there are kids who spend the entire summer at home doing
- 2:14nothing, just smack of fun kids is is a travesty, is a terrible
- 2:20tragedy. And, and it's all because of
- 2:21financial constraints. That's terrible.
- 2:23So if a guy's listening to this in Lakewood, the guy's listening
- 2:26to this in the five towns and he knows a kid that's going to be
- 2:28sitting at home and he hears this and that kid goes to camp
- 2:31and has an amazing summer because of this, then that's the
- 2:33message I want to give up. And I'm not here to push an
- 2:35agenda. I'm not here to fight with
- 2:37anybody. I'm not here to, to do any of
- 2:39that. I'm just I'm a Rebbe.
- 2:41I care about kids and I care about clinical kids and they're
- 2:45from Kite and their overall health and, and growing into
- 2:49good people. And I hold that a summer is
- 2:53integral in that piece. So that's that's just why I'm
- 2:56here. OK, so I'll tell you the reason
- 3:00why I asked you to come on here, just so you know, is I love that
- 3:03you're running this organization.
- 3:05I'm a big fan of people that run organizations.
- 3:07I actually make it my mission to have at least once every 4-5,
- 3:10six episodes of people that run organizations.
- 3:13I feel like it's the core values of who we are as a Jewish
- 3:16community, that we support each other and that we fill in those
- 3:18gaps. This is an interesting 1.
- 3:20So I can't wait to get into it. But the real reason why I asked
- 3:23you to be here is because I like finding out the person that
- 3:25started an organization, Why did he start it and where did it
- 3:29come from? Who is that person?
- 3:31You may not think that you have a message or that you have that
- 3:34you know, something that you're, you know, you want to share with
- 3:36the world, but it'll come out and it comes out probably at the
- 3:40kiddush table and it comes out, you know, when you're schmoozing
- 3:42with people, walking with them. So that the idea that I have in
- 3:46terms of these discussions is, of course, I want to hear about
- 3:49the organization and what you do and how you do it and the
- 3:51importance of it. But I want to understand you and
- 3:53who you are and what it took you to start an organization, what
- 3:55the challenges were. What was it like for you when
- 3:57you thought about it to the beginning, in the beginning
- 3:59process? But first, let me welcome back
- 4:02everybody to the None of Your Business podcast.
- 4:04I'm your host, Michael Greenfield.
- 4:05With me, of course, is our beloved guest, Husky Sherman.
- 4:09Welcome to the program. Thank you so much to our
- 4:12subscribers, our listeners, our followers, our comments.
- 4:14And of course, we can't do this without the Prime Source
- 4:17production team. Prime Source does amazing things
- 4:19when it comes to marketing, branding, networking, social
- 4:22media building. And this is one of our platforms
- 4:24that we like to get out there. Unfortunately for you, the
- 4:28captain of the team that has been a winner consecutively year
- 4:31here, Oshi Schwartz, my Co host is again not here.
- 4:34And for those of you wondering, it's just a scheduling thing.
- 4:37It's a it's a thing where he's like when you have a celebrity,
- 4:39call me. Feels great.
- 4:42Yeah, Tusky, I hope that makes you feel good.
- 4:44You know, no, ultimately it's you know, it's Friday.
- 4:47It's you know, it's a few hours before Shabbos.
- 4:49I've done recordings on most of Shabbos, Saturday night.
- 4:52And it gets challenging with timing and he's doing a lot in
- 4:55terms of the prime source world. And if the schedule works great.
- 4:58And if not, you know, I don't mind the one-on-one, to be
- 5:00honest with you. And I, I'm actually enjoying
- 5:02them because I get to go a little bit deeper and a little
- 5:04bit less, less of the theatrics and.
- 5:07More intimate. A little bit more intimate.
- 5:10Exactly, exactly. That's that's the idea.
- 5:14So I'm going to start off with saying Ioffer you a job, true or
- 5:18not true? And I'm going to I'm going to
- 5:22say it comfortably here because this is a topic that is so
- 5:26interesting to me. And it's something that I feel
- 5:29like our community in Muncie and Sruli Rozelle specifically, it
- 5:33changed the dynamic of schools and systems in terms of teachers
- 5:36and Rabaim where he's paying them a wage that makes it worth
- 5:39it for them to actually be a teacher.
- 5:42I'm Hannah and in fact, I have a friend of mine in Lakewood.
- 5:46His name is Kami and I'm going to shout him out now.
- 5:49And he is the creator of the most annoying song in the world.
- 5:54Do you know the most annoying song in the world?
- 5:58No. 1877 Cars for kids. Cars for kids?
- 6:04Yes, sure, of course. Rob Edmonds paid him 10 bucks
- 6:06for that song. He has a plaque on his wall.
- 6:08He's very proud of it. He is a marketing genius, a
- 6:11creator of huge, huge dynamic companies that gives Daf Yomi.
- 6:15He's he's, I don't know if it's Daf, but he gives Cher.
- 6:17Very smart guy, very intelligent guy.
- 6:20I use him all the time to bounce ideas off him for branding.
- 6:23He he owned a company called Banquest Credit Card Company
- 6:26System. He's creating a system for
- 6:27Shidokhim where you employ a shotgun.
- 6:32Imagine the concept. Your own personal shotgun.
- 6:34Your own personal shotgun that works on your behalf.
- 6:36And they get paid a regular salary.
- 6:38So shatranim get paid a regular salary to do the job as a
- 6:42shliach. Of course of Hashem, similar to
- 6:44a teacher or mahanek, which is more than just a shliach.
- 6:47It's, you know, you're a shliach of a parent, you're a messenger
- 6:50of a parent to do the job that we can't do.
- 6:53So I have to, I have to get into that.
- 6:56Ioffer you a very nice salary package.
- 6:59I offered you something that I think would take 10 years for
- 7:02someone to get such a package of a salary and you denied it and
- 7:06you said no. And you said you wanted to go
- 7:08into Henoch and you want to stay in Henoch and you're in a non
- 7:11for profit world. Can I ask you how are you able
- 7:14to afford to say no? And how could other people who
- 7:16want to go in the world of Henoch and that world of
- 7:19teaching others and influencing others and opening organizations
- 7:23have the confidence to say no to a six figure salary?
- 7:27So, so let's we'll go back to how it all started.
- 7:30I worked for Michigan Ooth and Camp Clever as a head counselor
- 7:33and Michiganoth saw me and we were negotiating my original
- 7:35salary. This is like 10 years ago.
- 7:38And he just stops me for a second.
- 7:39He says, I want to introduce it to my partner, Michael Hindry
- 7:42Field and he says you would be amazing in sales and we do sales
- 7:47and we do healthcare and we you'd be amazing at that.
- 7:50You, you have this neck. And I said, come on, I'm not I'm
- 7:53like 26 years old, 27 maybe. I wasn't getting into this going
- 7:56into the world. My father's a ready.
- 7:57I want to be ready. And you did.
- 7:59You offered me this very, very for me for sure.
- 8:02It's 27 year old mind blowing money to come into the working
- 8:05field, but I honestly didn't even consider it because I have
- 8:10a passion to. I grew up in a home.
- 8:12My father is can I know is still a Rebbe and Ari crowned in
- 8:15Chicago. Ari crowned everyday school and
- 8:18it's when you sometimes have a dream that you want to pursue so
- 8:22you don't give up on that dream very easily.
- 8:23Even when it comes to money and I think every Rebbe in every
- 8:27classroom, no one's doing it for the money.
- 8:29You know that even with all the help and initiatives and the
- 8:32cast they leaves and the bonuses and the bumps and salaries over
- 8:36the year, no rebbies in the classroom because he's doing it
- 8:39as a financial reason. He's doing it because he has a
- 8:43passion to teach Taylor to help kids Dyke to help that kid who
- 8:48never had a chance. And when the there's a flutter
- 8:51obey him to who are looking for jobs and you'd be surprised.
- 8:55You think like you know there's not enough for him to go around
- 8:59every year. I can tell you, YSVI can tell
- 9:02you other schools that have hundreds of applicants from
- 9:05Lakewood people will travel for two hours every day each way to
- 9:09sit in front of 2728 kids and teach them Tiger for a salary
- 9:14that doesn't pay the bills. Every Rebbe has a second job.
- 9:18Every Rebbe has an afternoon job.
- 9:20Every tutors tutors a kid lanes is about Curry is something has
- 9:25does something else to fill that that void of that financial
- 9:29void. But they do it because they love
- 9:30it because there's nothing. There's a certain seat book.
- 9:33There's a certain feeling that you get that when you in front
- 9:36of a classroom and you teach a block of Morrow, you teach
- 9:39Mishnah and a kid gets it. And you see a kid who was
- 9:42beginning the year couldn't read and now it's Hanukkah time and
- 9:45he's reading so confluently because you put in that because
- 9:48there's nothing like it. There's nothing like there's no
- 9:51there's no better fulfillment. I think in every line of work,
- 9:55most important thing is a person should come home and he should
- 9:57feel accomplished and fulfilled. And the saddest thing is when a
- 10:00guy goes to sleep at night and he looks at his days like what I
- 10:04do today. So even if I made money, but I
- 10:07think that I don't know. I don't know if that gets old.
- 10:10Eventually you want to really have real fulfillment.
- 10:12And I don't think there's any more fulfillment than going to
- 10:15Thomas Hasna, like dancing at your third grade, Thomas Hasna
- 10:19that you kept up with for the last 15 years, 20 years.
- 10:23And you're dancing at his wedding.
- 10:24And he turns to you and he whispers in your ear and he
- 10:26says, Rebbe, I, I am who I am today getting married as a
- 10:30healthy kid because of you. And I would look back and said,
- 10:33I had you in 3rd grade. And he says, you have no idea.
- 10:37You have no idea what you've done for me.
- 10:39And my father could tell you stories of endless amounts of
- 10:42kids, 10's and he's a lot older than me and he's been through it
- 10:45for many years. Kids who tell me I'm only from
- 10:48because of you. I'm only keep Shabbos because of
- 10:50you. I only be able to be a father
- 10:52and be healthy because of you. I mean, everybody could tell you
- 10:55these stories. A Rebbe has no, no time
- 10:58constraints. There's no such thing as I'm too
- 11:00busy for a Talmud. Everybody will tell you they'll
- 11:03do whatever they can for every Talmud.
- 11:05Where do you find it in the business world?
- 11:06So you offered me a job that I'll come into the business
- 11:08world, I'll pay my bills, I won't have to struggle.
- 11:12But in the end of the day, it's, it's just, I want to this
- 11:16fulfillment, this, this idea of teaching, growing and being
- 11:21involved in the entire Islam, you know, just to be able to, I
- 11:23feel very blessed to be able to get up in the morning, go to
- 11:27Shakos and yeshiva, be amongst a bunch of backroom.
- 11:29And then my 9:00 to 5:00 is opening tomorrow.
- 11:32Wow, that's. Special.
- 11:33You know what? This conversation is very, very
- 11:35special. It's something that I, you know,
- 11:37like you said in the beginning, you thought this is all about
- 11:39bowling and about summer camp. It's really not.
- 11:41It's really not. That's not what this is about.
- 11:43It's about who you are, where we're going.
- 11:45So let's break that down for a little bit, if you don't mind.
- 11:48I think you're, you were lucky in a way to have that passion
- 11:50built inside of your DNA because you grew up in that environment
- 11:53you mentioned a minute ago. So and I'd love to explore that
- 11:56world of yours, where you're from and all that.
- 11:58We'll get that in a second. I'm just let's focus on this
- 12:01topic. And I'm doing that because
- 12:02someone in the comments and some people have told me in the past,
- 12:04stick to that conversation and finish it before you jump to the
- 12:07next one. So my ADD is kicking in and it's
- 12:09reminding me to do that. So thank you for commenting and
- 12:12keep it coming. We selectively listen to those
- 12:15that make sense. So as a Rebbe or someone that
- 12:19grew up in a Rebbe environment, you, I guess you saw it and you
- 12:21felt it with your dad and you saw that, you know, he had been
- 12:24inspired by students, etcetera. What, what does the 2021 year
- 12:28old, 22 year old do when he doesn't have that?
- 12:31He's he's sitting around and he just finished, you know, TC
- 12:34America's ratio. It doesn't make a difference
- 12:36which school he went to in Israel or what college he just
- 12:39finished just because he had to get his degree and they don't
- 12:43know what they want to do. So I'm curious from your
- 12:45perspective and your experience and all the different teenagers
- 12:49and adults that you've seen grow and having this perspective and
- 12:52this idea, how do you break it down?
- 12:55How make believe I'm the 21 year old coming to you?
- 12:57And I'm saying, Rebbe, I need your help.
- 13:00I need your help. Please tell me what I should do.
- 13:02I don't think I'm passionate about anything right now.
- 13:05I just know I want to make money, you know, So like, I know
- 13:08I want to support a family. And of course, you know, I, I
- 13:11respect and, and I want to learn and I want to, you know, I
- 13:14respect the Torah and the values, but what do I do?
- 13:16How do I find my passion? What do I do?
- 13:18Yeah, so I I would tell Abacha, let's say come back from my soul
- 13:21even beforehand. There's no years of your life
- 13:24that you can use then the years of high school, Yeshiva,
- 13:29Bismetris, even Aries to Seoul for learning innovation.
- 13:33Once you have a family and your bills and think there's, you're
- 13:37never going to get back to the amount of time that you could
- 13:39devote yourself to learning and real learning with no
- 13:42interruptions, no distractions. But let's say even a boy, like
- 13:45you said, he's coming back from he's 2122 and he's thinking
- 13:48about he's thinking about getting a job and he's not the
- 13:50best learner and he's his, his dream and his path is not to
- 13:53send the best managers all day. I mean, he like again, he has a
- 13:56scuffle from his Rebeam to learn and he and he knows that Tyra is
- 13:59the ICAR and Tyra and then came he knew, but it's not his
- 14:03doesn't give him that enjoyment and fulfillment.
- 14:05So, and a lot of about him have this, this issue.
- 14:08And I would, what I tell, like tell me them to come to me is,
- 14:12is you have to just do something that you're going to go to
- 14:15sleep, like I said, and you can feel that you're being
- 14:18productive and you're feeling that you having fulfillment and
- 14:20you're only going to get there for something that you enjoy,
- 14:22right? The old cliche of, of enjoy what
- 14:24you do. Don't work a day in your life.
- 14:26It's so real. It's so real.
- 14:27Rabaim, don't fetch and complain because they love what they do.
- 14:30And there's people who I see all the time.
- 14:32They come home from work and they're smiling and they go to
- 14:35work. And I'm sure you have tons of
- 14:36employees who, who have the sentiment that they, when you
- 14:39enjoy what you do. So you have to really number one
- 14:41thing is look for something that's going to give you
- 14:43fulfillment in life. And if it's just going to be
- 14:45sales and cold calls and going through and, or any type of work
- 14:48that you're going to have to, you have to, I've brought in
- 14:51laws who got into different jobs and the main thing they looked
- 14:54for was something that they would enjoy doing and something
- 14:56that there was growth and something that they felt they're
- 14:58working for good people. And from there, they just, you
- 15:02know, they were very much they just so the most important thing
- 15:05is just do something you're going to love, do something
- 15:07you're going to enjoy and, and do something that you're going
- 15:10to feel good about yourself. You're going to get married.
- 15:12You're going to your wife's going to respect you.
- 15:13You're going to respect yourself.
- 15:14Your kids are going to respect you.
- 15:15What you do, you know, Tati does this Tati, Oh, what's your
- 15:18father do? He's, you know, he's even in any
- 15:21industry. He's in this, in this industry,
- 15:23but he's, he's a Bento. He learns at night, he learns in
- 15:26here he goes. Think, think it through.
- 15:28Think of who you're surrounding yourself with.
- 15:29Think of the people you're surrounding yourself with.
- 15:31Think of what line of work you're getting into and
- 15:33something that you're going to go home, Shabbos, Friday night,
- 15:35you're going to sit down. Everything stops.
- 15:37Everything slows down and it's and your family is around you
- 15:40and you feel good. You feel good who you are.
- 15:43You feel good what you're doing. You're happy with your life,
- 15:45you're happy with. You're just content.
- 15:47You're just feeling fulfilled. Let's let's rewind.
- 15:49I like that answer. Thank you for that.
- 15:51I do have a lot of, you know, we can go in deeper into that, but
- 15:53you know, we'll save it for another time in terms of how do
- 15:56you find out what you're good at, what you like?
- 15:57There's also there's a lot of explorations to do, but talking
- 16:00to a Rebbe or a mentor or someone that you trust is really
- 16:04the number one thing to do is to have that discussion.
- 16:06Knowing that you need to be on the path of finding what you
- 16:09love is number 1, you know, admitting that and understanding
- 16:12it. And I think more importantly
- 16:14than the boys and the girls themselves is the parents that
- 16:16need to recognize to guide their children towards this path and
- 16:21just really reminding them to do with it, right?
- 16:23100% I, I parents in my personal opinions, I mean, just as a
- 16:27rebbe and I see from yeshivas have for some reason taken a
- 16:31step back from parenting. It's like Bokashemi still see
- 16:36that some you still see a lot of parents are doing a great job.
- 16:38But in today's world, and this goes right into the whole camp
- 16:42kids and camp thing is in today's world, there's parents
- 16:45who, I mean, I, I heard there was AI saw a, there was a
- 16:49parenting class and this lady, she said, what do you want your
- 16:53kids to be? And she just opened, left it
- 16:56open, open-ended question to the whole.
- 16:58And 1st the people were shy and then some successful.
- 17:02OK, thank you very much. Anything else?
- 17:05Another person said, you know, different answers throughout the
- 17:09whole thing. And then finally one lady said,
- 17:10happy, I just want my kids to be happy.
- 17:13And then the lady stopped the person giving the whole, you
- 17:16know, thing stopped. And she said there, that's,
- 17:18that's usually the answer I get is parents just want their kids
- 17:21to be happy. And nowadays a parent will do
- 17:25really anything to make sure that the kids hair just happy.
- 17:28But what does happy really mean to get your kid an iPhone or to
- 17:32get your kid? Kids come around and they're
- 17:35they they struggle with this so much.
- 17:36They want to fit in and they want what everyone else has.
- 17:38And it's very materialistic world that we live in.
- 17:41And they look at everything else is going around the world.
- 17:43And parents have such a hard time saying like, no, I'm sorry,
- 17:47you can't. The word no has gotten so lost
- 17:50and today's and and as even as a Rebbe, like I'll tell a kid, you
- 17:55know, you have to do this. You have to review, you have to
- 17:58'cause you have to know you have a test coming up.
- 18:00But then you have to and I'll get a call from the and the kid
- 18:02will say is Rebbe so hard? I can't.
- 18:04And I'll try to push him and I'll and I'll learn with him,
- 18:07put one-on-one and I'll come to his house, But then I'll get a
- 18:09phone call from the mother. I mean, Sherman, I really feel
- 18:12that he's too hard for him and it's the other thing.
- 18:14And I'm like, you know, it's not too hard for him.
- 18:17I, I know he can do it. I, I believe in him.
- 18:19I know he could succeed. I know he could stag.
- 18:21I know he and the parents like Sherman.
- 18:23I, I really feel that, you know, he needs a phone and, and all
- 18:26those kids and he needs a moose knuckle coat and he needs a
- 18:29Macaji. He needs a car and he needs to
- 18:31get his license. And I said, what do you feel
- 18:33about it? No, no, I feel, I feel he should
- 18:35wait. I thought he should be 1716.
- 18:37I think he made it So say no, but he's going to be so unhappy.
- 18:43So what you're the parent. What happened to just being a
- 18:46parent And in the other side is these kids, it's a new thing to
- 18:51go at 1819 years old Terry's so and go to America's and TC and
- 18:56these she was used to be first year, second year, third year,
- 18:58fourth year yeshiva. Now who sends their kid to 18
- 19:01years old Terry's to sell. Go there to sell and just do
- 19:05what you trust your kid at 18 to, to go live in another
- 19:08country 6000 miles away. It's it's a risky business.
- 19:13But parents, I mean, this is the new way to do it.
- 19:15But when they come home, like you're saying, at least take
- 19:17them by the hand and help them. You've been through you have.
- 19:19There's nothing more valuable than experience.
- 19:22You know what works and what doesn't work.
- 19:23So take your kid by the hand, guide him to what he wants to
- 19:26do. But he'll, he's going to push
- 19:27back and he'll say like, no, I don't want to yeshiva.
- 19:30No, I don't want to do this. I don't do that.
- 19:33You're 18, you're 19. What why do you think at 19
- 19:36years old you're able to, to just do these things on your
- 19:38own, Take a step into your kids life and, and head to sit down,
- 19:41have a conversation and say, listen, we feel this.
- 19:45This is what this is the direction we're thinking to
- 19:46take. I really feel that it's going to
- 19:48be great for you. Wow, it's an interesting
- 19:51approach. You know, I agree on a lot of
- 19:54the concepts of what you're saying, but there's certain
- 19:56things that I would say is that sometimes you want your kids to
- 20:00just, you know, figure it out. Independence, yes, certain
- 20:02things you want to give independence certain things, but
- 20:05the world is so crazy and, and the world of technology and, and
- 20:08the exposure that the kids are getting out there, it just,
- 20:11there's so much, there's so much independence that we're giving
- 20:14our kids and we're, we're just taking a step away because we're
- 20:16also distracted. I get it.
- 20:18But at 18, they're also independent to make their legal
- 20:20decisions. They're independent to go to the
- 20:21army. They're independent to do so
- 20:23many. Things, they're just legal
- 20:23things. That's just the number that the
- 20:25government put on 18. 18 is the number that we feel 18.
- 20:29Think of your kids right now at 18.
- 20:30They're such kids. They're they're nothing.
- 20:33What they just finished 12th grade.
- 20:35You're ready to make legal decisions now You're ready to
- 20:37just do what you want. So the government put a, a
- 20:39stamp, OK, 18 year olds, they think they know what they're
- 20:42doing. Legal.
- 20:43What does legal mean? You're a parent.
- 20:46We're parents our whole lives. You know, you're, you're, you're
- 20:48a parent to 120. He doesn't stop, but you give in
- 20:52to the kids own pressure because he decided or she decided, this
- 20:57is what's best for me. Step in.
- 20:59Just like when you were seven, you wouldn't let your kid do
- 21:01something because if you felt it was wrong.
- 21:03And just like when you were 12, you didn't let your kid do
- 21:05things. But nowadays it happens.
- 21:07Parents just decide, listen, I don't know.
- 21:09I don't know what you want me to do.
- 21:11This is what they want. This is what they were going.
- 21:12This is this is what I love. This is what all their friends
- 21:15are doing. If you feel it's wrong, it's
- 21:18wrong. Obviously you could seek that
- 21:19story and you have a Rove and someone to ask.
- 21:22But as a parent your kid always look to you for direction.
- 21:25Why you stopping now? Why you giving up now?
- 21:28Why all the sudden are you taking a back seat to his, his
- 21:31or her life? There is a fine transition
- 21:33between We've discussed this in the past and I'm going to repeat
- 21:36it again because I believe in it so much between rules and
- 21:39guidance, right as your kid grows, the certain things that
- 21:41you can have to shy away from rules and you have to start
- 21:44giving them guidance. But what you're bringing to
- 21:45light, which I like a lot is that that guidance never ends.
- 21:49And it's something that you don't have to wait for them to
- 21:50come to you. I think that's really the
- 21:52message here with what you're saying is that don't wait till
- 21:55your kid, no matter what age they are, 2530 doesn't make a
- 21:58difference. They're they're in trouble.
- 21:59There's a problem. Don't only wait for them to come
- 22:01to you. That's not a parent's job.
- 22:03That's a friend's job for as as a as a parent, it's on you to go
- 22:07ahead and offer the. For sure, for sure.
- 22:10I mean, my my father would always we would always feel it
- 22:12was joke around with him that we would come for pesar sulcus and
- 22:15we would know that he's like evaluating you, you know, you
- 22:18you're Shalom bias. He's evaluated like.
- 22:20He's sizing you. Happy he's totally sizing you up
- 22:23like it never and then like when he felt good like everything's
- 22:25OK like he's look at all your kids OK you know all silently
- 22:29all like what we knew was coming and then if like he would always
- 22:32like even on like a walk to show Minha nice car you know has
- 22:36everything OK like I noticed it yeah now about Hashem everything
- 22:39fine. You know how many times do we
- 22:42you know Rahmal has done here about a family that that gets so
- 22:44blindsided by you know a kid that that that goes off the
- 22:48Derek or a kid and like we never knew we didn't know he was
- 22:51struggling with this. We didn't know she was
- 22:53struggling with that. We didn't know their their
- 22:54marriage was on the rocks. We didn't know what do we need
- 22:57to know? I mean, there's, there's,
- 22:59there's been evasiveness and, and being a parent, you know,
- 23:03check in with your kid, look for the signs, look for the warning
- 23:05signs, look for, for that. He's struggling in yeshiva.
- 23:08There's so many kids who come to PTA and like really he's, he's,
- 23:11he's not doing well. I don't know.
- 23:12He comes home. He's so he's so happy.
- 23:15Happy is just is just the an outside and external feeling.
- 23:20Real happiness comes from successful being successful,
- 23:23being accomplished, being fulfilled.
- 23:26A kid really having real fulfillment in life and what
- 23:28he's doing. And you have to look for that as
- 23:30a father, as a mother, you have to really look for that in your
- 23:32kid. Is he really hat?
- 23:33Is he really happy? Is he really fulfilled?
- 23:35It's his confidence as a Rebbe. The number one thing,
- 23:39fulfillment, confidence all translates to self esteem and
- 23:42and self-confidence and a kid, there's nothing more important,
- 23:45as you know, in in the business world.
- 23:48I think the thing that you saw in me when when you want to hire
- 23:51me and what my she saw on me, what she can do is confidence.
- 23:54Is this like, I own this? I got this?
- 23:56It's so important in in a kid to grow up with confidence that
- 24:00he's sure of himself. That's the thing that Rebey him
- 24:02struggle so much that the kid doesn't feel he can succeed.
- 24:04He doesn't feel it could be Maslea who told him that.
- 24:07Where'd that come from? You know where that came from?
- 24:10That came from as a 2 year old, as a three-year old, he wasn't
- 24:14getting the attention he needed. He wasn't getting the the love
- 24:17that his father never took him outside and played catch with
- 24:20him in his backyard, threw the ball back and forth.
- 24:22Do you know how precious a father playing catch with a son
- 24:26is? It's so much more than his Xbox.
- 24:30It's so much more than look what we got here for Hanukkah Yankee.
- 24:34Let's go outside and play in the backyard.
- 24:35Catch that feeling that a son gets, that my father cares about
- 24:40me. I am someone to him.
- 24:41I mean something that's confidence, that builds his
- 24:44confidence, that builds self esteem.
- 24:45I am who I am. My father believes in me.
- 24:49My ready believes in me. My mother believes in me.
- 24:51That I could grow, I could be great, I could be amazing.
- 24:54Kids go through the whole childhood without that.
- 24:57Nothing. Father's too busy, mother is on,
- 25:00you know, busy with this and that, whatever it might be.
- 25:02And we do. Everyone has hectic lives, but
- 25:05the confidence that you could give your kid is absolutely
- 25:07priceless. You know, I love what you're
- 25:10saying and I'm going to say that a lot, I guess, because I really
- 25:12love you and for all your values and morals and the way you
- 25:16think, it's, it's really refreshing to hear in many ways.
- 25:20You know, I, I've said this once in the past also that I've read
- 25:22somewhere that someone fixed a stuttering problem for children
- 25:26by just teaching the parents how to compliment the kid.
- 25:29And that in itself also just shows you that you know, how,
- 25:32how compliments build self-confidence and which is
- 25:36pretty amazing. And that's an easy fix, meaning
- 25:39it's an easy thing for a parent to do instead of walking in and
- 25:41finding the challenge that their kid is doing.
- 25:43And I'll admit, I went to a parenting class, you know, when
- 25:45I was younger and I learned a whole bunch of things that went
- 25:48in one ear and out the other. But the very few that stuck,
- 25:50that was one big one is complimenting.
- 25:52Forget all the Nos, forget all the stop doing that.
- 25:54Don't do that. Create rules.
- 25:57Of course, you know, understand what's, you know, harming people
- 26:00and what's not. But but compliment, compliment,
- 26:03compliment. Yeah, no, my, I just want to
- 26:05just commenting is so crucial, of course, but just to give a
- 26:09tip, when you compliment your kid, it's like, Oh my gosh, your
- 26:12your room is so clean. Great job.
- 26:15That's great. That's a great compliment.
- 26:16It shows you also recognize him. Recognition is amazing.
- 26:20But if you could compliment your kid and his core values, like
- 26:23wow, you you you said like I know that was probably so hard
- 26:27for you, but you stuck through it or or something that the kid
- 26:30himself that he sees what he's good at, even even it could be
- 26:33in materialistic, it could be sports, but find something that
- 26:36your kid excels in and compliment on those those.
- 26:39Give me an example. It's like, let's say my, my, my
- 26:42son has, let's say, let's say he'll have a hard time sharing,
- 26:45right. So it's very easy to compliment
- 26:47a kid and just like, oh, you clean your room, you put on your
- 26:49shoes, you did great on a test you did.
- 26:51But if you find something that he struggles with or something
- 26:53that and then he goes in and struggles through that, you see
- 26:57him sharing it. Then you come over to your son
- 26:58and you don't miss that opportunity to say, wow, Yankee,
- 27:01I saw how much you shared. That was amazing you and you
- 27:05stressed on him who he is as a person, not he cleaned his room.
- 27:08That's not a value of him. You, you as a person.
- 27:11That was amazing. You were so kind.
- 27:12You said the truth, you said to Ms. you were you did it great.
- 27:16You had such tested, you had such kindness, you had such
- 27:18sensitivity towards other person.
- 27:20A lot of parents missed that that kid has sensitivity towards
- 27:23another boy in his class or another boy in in show.
- 27:25And they're like, they don't use that as a as a tool, as as a
- 27:28tool to to to sell the kid and and really focus on that.
- 27:32But if you could really focus on those type of things, the core
- 27:35values of a kid that builds his self esteem in a whole different
- 27:38way as a person. I like that so compliment the
- 27:40values as opposed to just compliments.
- 27:42He's a he's a person who Ms. Then he grows knowing that those
- 27:46are important, not just to me, not just to the bunch, but to my
- 27:48parents. Let me compliment your parents
- 27:50by the way, because they obviously did something right
- 27:52My. Parents are are are treasures.
- 27:54They're. Let let's go there.
- 27:55Where did you grow up? Who are your parents?
- 27:57Where are they from? My father.
- 27:58How many siblings are you? Tell us about your upbringing.
- 28:00My father is prime Sherman from Chicago, IL.
- 28:03My mother is is Nahama Sherman. She owns a florist, flower shop,
- 28:06a gentleman florist in Chicago. I'm one of 11 kids.
- 28:09I have ten siblings. Can I know her?
- 28:12Five boys, 6 girls and we're the most close knit.
- 28:17Can I know her? A family you know to my parents
- 28:20are tremendously blessed. They have 11 kids who are all
- 28:24the same as me. Tons of a lot of personality.
- 28:26We could all be head counselors. We're all involved in summer
- 28:28things. One brother's in the head is a
- 28:30sleepway camp. Another brother owns a camp and
- 28:32other we're all that same girls also my sister owns the camp in
- 28:35Chicago. My father was a head counselor.
- 28:37So we're all have that outgoing very personable very my my
- 28:41grandfather was Rasheed in Saint Louis.
- 28:42It's like climbing. He was has she's my uncle.
- 28:45So you know you see how she's BB.
- 28:47I don't know if you know his brother all very eccentric out
- 28:51there lots of fun type of family.
- 28:53So I grew up in Chicago. She was threats me.
- 28:55I was not a great kid in in school, not behavior wise, but I
- 28:59just back when I was in school, there was no, no kid fall
- 29:03through the cracks moments. There was no, there was no it
- 29:06was sink or swim at my 7th grade.
- 29:08Rebbe actually told me. He says you don't bother me and
- 29:11I won't bother you. You know, that's where that's
- 29:13how I grew up. That was that was the finish
- 29:15back in the day, the the good kids would excel, the average
- 29:19kids would flow through and the shlafa kids would just sink.
- 29:23It was only, you know, 20 years ago or whatever, maybe a little
- 29:25more that they noticed how many kids are, are falling through
- 29:29the cracks and Korea help and, and, and all this
- 29:32extracurricular stuff and how resource rooms and tons of
- 29:36resource and, and, and that, that wasn't available in my
- 29:38days. The resource room was the room
- 29:40you went to when you got thrown out of class.
- 29:42That was it. And there was a guy who sat
- 29:43there and he said, here, read a book.
- 29:44There was no help. There was no, and if you, if you
- 29:47sunk you, you sunk and that's it.
- 29:48And I went through school and I followed my Rebbe even in 6th
- 29:52grade. It was a disaster.
- 29:53It was a terrible year and and he was just it was a so
- 29:57overwhelmed the whole class called my father TA because like
- 30:00I would say, raise my hand tie So they would all like say, oh,
- 30:03Todd, it was a disaster. My father never had any of my
- 30:05brothers after that, but we grew up in a very warm, extremely
- 30:11loving environment. My father was as a Rebbe.
- 30:14He did everything with us as boys.
- 30:17We took Rd. trips to to Vegas and we did, you know, white
- 30:21water rafting in Colorado like we did.
- 30:23We do we he he really took the time to acknowledge us and give
- 30:29us tremendous love. He would never miss an
- 30:32opportunity to to realize something was bothering us.
- 30:36You know, there's never a feeling of like my parents don't
- 30:39don't know something. And he always told us that
- 30:43there's, there's never a time you can't come over to us and
- 30:46say something and tell me something.
- 30:48And he wouldn't say I wouldn't be upset.
- 30:51He said maybe I wouldn't be upset, but but you should always
- 30:55come to me and tell me if anything's ever bothering you.
- 30:57And he would be very intuitive to see if something was
- 31:00bothering us. And if, and again, like we were
- 31:02saying before, even now, even I'm, I'm 30 years old and I
- 31:06could come home and like I said, my father will, he'll sense a
- 31:08sister this, a brother that something, you know, and he'll
- 31:12do everything for his kids, anything, anything, anything.
- 31:14And we know that we felt that. And that's something that we
- 31:16knew from the cradle. Wow.
- 31:18So, so take me through your journey.
- 31:19You went through school, I went through, you had your
- 31:21challenges, spent a lot of time in the resource.
- 31:23Room time in the resource room. Wow, playing.
- 31:25What was that game? Something Trails?
- 31:28I don't know some old game and we then I went to was the the
- 31:33Oregon Trail Oregon Trail yes, thank you very good Steph Steph,
- 31:37you might have joined the probably a similar resource
- 31:40room. I was yes, absolutely and that
- 31:42was without trashy, but he Michael, I was right on the
- 31:45Oregon Trail yes way back in the the first 3 days of of the
- 31:49resource room. Or ping pong.
- 31:50No, they don't have ping pong. That's fancy.
- 31:52Already. Right, right, That's a sport.
- 31:54Or. 1998 or we're moving. You know, we're in the early
- 31:5790s. So I went from there to Tulsa,
- 32:00Chicago. It's a very difficult year.
- 32:02Also, you know, it wasn't an easy year.
- 32:05They I was in the lower share of 9th grade.
- 32:08It was a hard year. And my parents realized that
- 32:10maybe best for me to go out of town just to, you know, go out
- 32:14there again, independence, grow a little bit, and I went to
- 32:18Detroit. So after you finished 9th grade.
- 32:20After finished 9th. Grade realize it's not such a
- 32:22great fit. There was a guy, Mayor Kranzer,
- 32:24I don't know if you know Mayor Kranz from Detroit.
- 32:25He went. He's loves my father.
- 32:27He was a counselor. My father was the head
- 32:30councillor. Perkaday came in Chicago and he
- 32:32said come to Detroit. It's a great yeshiva.
- 32:34It's a great place. I went to Detroit.
- 32:36Also as a parent, by the way, very challenging to remove a kid
- 32:39from high school and move him to another high school.
- 32:40It's. Oh, for sure.
- 32:42Very big challenge. Yeah.
- 32:43It it it's it's very hard from from one year to the next.
- 32:45Especially they have to reallocate themselves, their
- 32:48friends. Yeah, they're leaving friends,
- 32:51making new friends, making new herbaeum.
- 32:53Especially now. Kids love to be comfortable.
- 32:55They love to be, you know, in a place where they know people and
- 32:58they're comfortable. But.
- 32:58What do you do in the summers? I was a huge a good Midwest guy,
- 33:02a good Midwest counsellor, camper, the whole of Missifta
- 33:08program, great, tremendous memories.
- 33:11I was that guy who was bawling my eyes out on the bus, you
- 33:14know, as they play the alma mater in the background.
- 33:17It's just funniest I was I was on the coach bus in the
- 33:19bathroom. You know that and and a guy like
- 33:21opens the door and I'm sitting there bawling.
- 33:24I'm very emotional guy and I like you really made
- 33:27friendships. You made real, you know, real
- 33:29friendships. Now, as guys, we don't keep up
- 33:31over the year, but it was like that first day at camp, it was
- 33:34like I never left, you know, the same guys, the same counselors,
- 33:37the same people. And that month of of of a good
- 33:39Midwest was like it was heaven for me.
- 33:41It was like, especially after coming through struggling school
- 33:44years where it was like a disaster.
- 33:47So this was like freedom. This was, this was, I couldn't
- 33:49wait to get on the, the volleyball court, you know, I
- 33:51couldn't wait to get there. And, yeah, a guy opens the, the
- 33:54bathroom door to go to the bathroom and I'm sitting there
- 33:56bawling. And like afterwards, like a
- 33:58counselor comes over to me. He's like, is everything OK?
- 34:00Like he thought like something happened or something.
- 34:02I said, no, I'm just, it's just, it's just sad.
- 34:04It's just sad to leave, you know?
- 34:06It was just so I loved. I breathed hemp and I went to
- 34:10Detroit without yeshiva. It was actually visiting day.
- 34:13My father came to camp and he said next you're going to go to
- 34:17Detroit. So I went to Detroit.
- 34:19Your beauty box is Shiva there, Mary Simpler Box's brother and I
- 34:24was there 10th, 11th, 12th, first, second, third, fourth
- 34:26year. I became a Detroiter.
- 34:29And you know, Detroit also is a family, very, very close knit
- 34:33group of guys, guys who I hold as my closest friends, people
- 34:38who I even now today we go to the parlor meetings and the
- 34:41events and it's just like it's just friendships that are built
- 34:45on unreal timing Yeshiva, like, you know, everlasting
- 34:48friendships from there. I went there.
- 34:51It's a settlement department coming Kaplan.
- 34:52So yeshiva it's not around anymore.
- 34:53I was there for a year and a half is also hard, hard.
- 34:56A year and a half I got there. I had no Deira my first my first
- 35:01three days I slept on a floor and someone's deer until they
- 35:03threw me out. I really know where it goes.
- 35:05Real hard transition into there. It's a soul life.
- 35:08I learned deer. By the way, even after four
- 35:10years, you were an 18. For sure, it's very difficult.
- 35:15Nothing was set up. Guys came.
- 35:17Nowadays they have dorms, everything, everything's set up
- 35:19for you. But here it's like if you didn't
- 35:21hustle and you didn't get a dira, so you got there and you
- 35:23were homeless. But in the in the real words,
- 35:25you were, you were literally of nowhere to go.
- 35:27And I'm trying to make connections and this guy, this
- 35:29guy have a bed. This guy finally found the DIRA
- 35:31that you know, guys took me in. They I guess they just need the
- 35:34money to pay the rent or something.
- 35:35Turned out to be a great dealer. Guys left and I like we took it
- 35:38over. It was a any Chesco right there.
- 35:41So it was a great dealer and it was a year and a half.
- 35:45It's nice. I mean there it's so is is is
- 35:47beautiful. The thing I connected most of
- 35:48ourselves, the people, the people there are just like you
- 35:52don't see like tell me the common and every stable and
- 35:56every place, you know, chassis and everywhere.
- 35:57It's just it's all different lifestyle, it's all different
- 36:00culture, obviously. And now it's, I guess that could
- 36:03be more American as as as then, but it was still extremely
- 36:07special for me. Only because we're talking about
- 36:08Israel. Do you have an opinion on the
- 36:09whole Israel army learning situation?
- 36:13I, I have just, I think the terror opinion, I think it's
- 36:16just. Just just say your opinion.
- 36:18Yeah, I'm not even saying. My opinion my my scope of
- 36:21growing up was always that ancient Mia Catella and and
- 36:23there are a bunch of them, I think loves nothing more than
- 36:26Terra and he protects Kai. So through the limit of Terra
- 36:29and mitzvahs And when you when you learn Terra.
- 36:32So then I don't maybe don't even need an army.
- 36:35You don't, you don't, you don't need it.
- 36:36So how, if you if we're doing the right things and we're and
- 36:38we're learning Terra, so then then we'll be safe there, buddy.
- 36:43Some tells us that it's I've talked and in in participate.
- 36:46That's that's that's what the that's the smear of Terra.
- 36:50Now, if you have a buck who's not learning and he is and he's
- 36:53Terra, it's not such thing, by the way, as Terry's not for me.
- 36:56That's there's no such, there's no such concept.
- 36:58Terry's for everybody. Everybody could succeed on their
- 37:00own level, maybe in learning, but there's no such thing like I
- 37:03tried it. It's not for me.
- 37:05Terry's not for me. Maybe he didn't try with the
- 37:06right Caruso, maybe he didn't try, maybe he didn't try, but
- 37:09Terry's for everybody. Everyone could get a good smack
- 37:11and Terry now a guy wants to go to the Army, so go to the Army.
- 37:14But now to pull guys out of the base managers to go to the Army,
- 37:17that's just it's just it's it's not just to tell you.
- 37:21I don't think it's a my opinion. Again, it's not that it's not to
- 37:23tear you away. I mean the bunch some loves tell
- 37:25you, you know, Tama Terry. Can I cool them and take a real
- 37:30guy? Tama Hakama bin Terry was in the
- 37:33basement just learning just for seems like political reasons.
- 37:37I know just, it seems wrong. I know that's just my, you know.
- 37:43Sure, I understand. That's why I grew up.
- 37:46That's my grandfather, you know? Yeah.
- 37:47I'm not diving deep into the topic, I'm just curious about.
- 37:49And again, I don't have strong, like, political views.
- 37:52Yeah, I'm just from the optics of it.
- 37:55It's like, you know, you have soldiers going into this manager
- 37:58and pulling a guy away from a Gemara to go to the army.
- 38:01I mean, that's like that's twisted.
- 38:02That's in my sense, in my beliefs, the growing up in in
- 38:06that he belongs in the mismanage.
- 38:07There's no if I cared, let him stay in the mismanage.
- 38:09Let him learn. Come every day to to make sure
- 38:11he's learning. That's that's you want to make
- 38:14sure he's doing something for the country.
- 38:15So make sure he's learning. Not a bad idea, by the way.
- 38:17You should assign the army a unit to make sure the people are
- 38:19just learning, that's all. Smear Saddam unit and they come
- 38:22in and if you're you better be because if you're not learning,
- 38:24you should one seder. They should have that unit be
- 38:27women, by the way, That way, you know, make sure that they'll do
- 38:29the job. Oh, no, they're coming.
- 38:30We have to be in the. I'm sure they are.
- 38:32Yeah, yeah. OK.
- 38:33All right. So you went through the Israel
- 38:34process? Came back, went to BMG, I was
- 38:39there. I actually I'm from the few
- 38:40people to knock it into BMG. What?
- 38:43I was just going to, I got a WMG, right?
- 38:46So what happened was I was supposed to take it for her?
- 38:48I'm sorry, we're, we're saying a lot of Jewish words, which is
- 38:50good. We have, we just have a, a nice
- 38:52good handful of non Jewish listeners that like learning
- 38:54about our culture because we work a lot with them.
- 38:56So just so everyone knows, BMG is probably the largest in
- 38:59America of schools for people to sit an institution of sitting,
- 39:03sitting and learning and studying.
- 39:04And there's a rule that you can't, you know, date until
- 39:07after a certain period of time. And usually everybody gets
- 39:09accepted into this institution just for the sake that you're
- 39:12learning, so you go there. So they didn't accept.
- 39:15Uber's like flow to base managed to cover it to BMG and it was
- 39:17like a shock. I got a thing in the mail
- 39:19unfortunately, due to the overwhelming applicants.
- 39:23The other thing So what happened was I was supposed to take a
- 39:25fire and nights and so and when to to alleviate some of the, you
- 39:29know, time constraints that they have.
- 39:30There's so many hundreds and hundreds of buckram coming back
- 39:33the same time taking fires. So they have they would have
- 39:36people in there. So who would faher guys who
- 39:39would take the test to entrance exam to get in and do you?
- 39:43Know how many boys go every year to the school?
- 39:45Yeah, it's still hundreds, hundreds.
- 39:46Yeah. New new applicants even only
- 39:48take after Sukkis and after Pesach, that's when it's open
- 39:50for new enrollment. OK, so the but hundreds, yeah.
- 39:54So I decided I they were learning Cochem which is a
- 39:58learning about. Basemikdus and and different
- 40:01things. So I wasn't working for me the
- 40:04whole carbonis and and the whole avoiding the basemikdus, that
- 40:07whole limit coming from what we normally learn.
- 40:09Yeshiva is nauseam Zekin is but those so it's a whole new world
- 40:15and it just wasn't clicking for me.
- 40:17The whole also learning about what they're learning now.
- 40:20And you know, that just didn't work.
- 40:22So I decided like I'm just going to learn another Stevo and a
- 40:26thing at and I just continued learning about Matsieva Bakama
- 40:29bastard the the regular. So this guy's going to get a
- 40:32fire and I didn't crack as well. So I just didn't show up.
- 40:37I'm like, I don't know, I just figured out what I'm supposed to
- 40:39do, go there and tell him like I don't know anything.
- 40:42It wasn't going to work. So I just didn't show up.
- 40:44So when BMG got like the, the letter like OK, who took a fire,
- 40:48who took the entrance exam? And my, my, there's like a 0 NAI
- 40:51don't know what was by my name. I don't know.
- 40:53So they figured like, OK, he's not coming or he's not getting
- 40:56in. I don't know.
- 40:57So that was that. So my grandfather, if it's a
- 41:01climbman who was in Lakewood, so he made a phone call to Shiva
- 41:08and he said don't come to my house.
- 41:10I came to his house and I said, listen, I want to learn.
- 41:12That's all he asked me you you want to learn?
- 41:14I said, of course. He said, OK, go get a Caruso and
- 41:18that's it. Next thing I got a phone call,
- 41:19the secretary called me come fill out the registration and
- 41:21thing and that was it. That was you got it.
- 41:24The greatest thing. Then the next step was was I got
- 41:26to learn with my grandfather. He had a kill and he we learned
- 41:29the Caruso. It was the best two years of my
- 41:32life. It was cut short.
- 41:33My grandfather was after 71. It wasn't was an old man.
- 41:37He had a lot of struggles with health diabetes, diabetic I but
- 41:41I I would sit with him by dialysis for hours and just
- 41:45learning with him the most special.
- 41:48The only regrets I have is like I I wish, like now Bokashama, I
- 41:53got stronger learning and better learning.
- 41:55So like now to learn with him would have been the quality of
- 41:57learning would have been so much better.
- 41:59That's the only Karata. That's what I'm saying like as a
- 42:01young person, if you have the opportunity now, the years when
- 42:04you don't have any Shibuya, you're not connected, you're not
- 42:06bogged down with anything, a wife, a kids, a bills and
- 42:09Pranosa to take advantage of that learning.
- 42:12I didn't I didn't take advantage as much as I should have.
- 42:14And it's even when Myra Shiva comes to Muncie, I don't know if
- 42:18you know Ari Davis, he lives in so he hosts a parlor meeting and
- 42:22Myra Shiva gives a a stickle tell you, he says.
- 42:25And I leave crying little tears, real tears of regret of like I
- 42:30could have had this for four years, four years, no long that
- 42:34is normally shoot him. And and I missed this year
- 42:36because it was because I was tired, because I out of sleep,
- 42:40sleep and just for sleep, I missed this.
- 42:42It's like for nothing. What did I miss this for?
- 42:45And you only ever got but you can't you never get that back
- 42:47years. You never get time back.
- 42:50It's so precious. And and you you have Karata that
- 42:53you didn't take advantage of the years and yeshiva that you
- 42:56really could have produced. You really could have excelled.
- 42:58Wow. OK, so this year's learning my
- 43:00grandfather was was really special.
- 43:02By by the way, first of all Ari is a good friend so shout out to
- 43:04Ari for hosting and always doing good for the community.
- 43:07So love you, Ari. Big, big supporter of Detroit
- 43:10for sure. And you know, so, so go through
- 43:13the rest of the process, then when did you start making money?
- 43:15Like when did, when did the realization come to you as a
- 43:17person that's going into and being a rebbe and camp and all
- 43:20that? Like I got bills to pay.
- 43:22So, so really in in when I was still in liquid, I was working
- 43:25in a camp. Actually, my whole camping
- 43:28experience as making money started from when a friend of
- 43:31mine called me up and said the policy in the campus.
- 43:34If you're a counselor and if you take a day off, you have to get
- 43:36a sub. You can't just leave your bunk
- 43:38with no, with no counselor. He says the easiest.
- 43:41They were going on a trip, We're going ice skating.
- 43:43Could you please just take my bunk ice skating so I don't get
- 43:46fired. I got a paycheck at the end of
- 43:47the summer, So I said, OK, I'm not doing anything.
- 43:49We're still middle as man, but it was the end of this man.
- 43:51Late summers, man, slaves, man, I'll come cover you for the day.
- 43:55And I went to camp Confiano Napeshi Weber and they're going
- 43:58ice skating. So the way I work is I get fully
- 44:00involved in anything I do. So I was spent about an hour and
- 44:04a half tightening. I don't know if you ever went
- 44:06ice skating right. So that wobbly foot, you know,
- 44:08it's got to be tight and I'm tightening every kids skate and
- 44:11all the council like on the side sitting around.
- 44:13Some of them are on the ice ready.
- 44:14I'm looking like, how are you on the ice?
- 44:16If your kid is your your, your, your camper sitting here with
- 44:19with no skates. So I'm kidding him.
- 44:20And I must have placed up 150 pairs of shoes of of ice skates.
- 44:24My fingers were killing me. And at the end of the day,
- 44:28Ashley Weber comes over to me. He says, what's your name?
- 44:31I said Fesky Sherman. He said, I need a head counselor
- 44:34today. Come work for me.
- 44:37I see you have it. You're you're you.
- 44:39You know what it means to to to take care of campers.
- 44:42He had a three divisions. He had 1300 kids in Camp
- 44:45Lakewood. He needed another division head
- 44:47next day. That's it.
- 44:49I was. I was head counselor, not head
- 44:50counselor of that division division, head of of the middle
- 44:52division. What a lesson.
- 44:53What a lesson in life in general.
- 44:55Just get noticed. If, if, if, if you're out there
- 44:57and and you're whatever field people notice you when you go
- 45:00above and beyond and you care. They see the passion.
- 45:03They see that you care. They want it.
- 45:05They they want you. And the reality is,
- 45:07unfortunately not too many people are like that.
- 45:09You said like all the councils are out there, you're tying
- 45:11those shoelaces. So, so you're, you've been tying
- 45:14shoelaces since. So I've been tying ice skates
- 45:16since. Yeah.
- 45:17So I was there for three years, then I was 1 sulcus.
- 45:20I'm sitting in my Schwar Yell Smith from the Grapevine.
- 45:24He I'm in his Sulka and a guy comes with his three kids and he
- 45:29has all his three kids in the Shiva Saruvane and I'm just
- 45:32singing. I love to sing and we're doing
- 45:34all the journeys. We're going through all the
- 45:36journey songs. And I'm I'm loving that these
- 45:38kids who it's another tragedy are going to grow up without
- 45:41knowing the real, the 1234 journeys like just lost.
- 45:45But they know all the songs. They know all the journey songs.
- 45:48So we're singing word for word and they're loving it and we're
- 45:51in the suck and where mom is vibing and it's beautiful.
- 45:53And he turns to me and says, you have to be a Rebbe in my kids
- 45:57school. And the next day I got a call
- 45:59from the principal after he said I asked I need a ready 5th
- 46:03grade. I got your name from from this
- 46:05person. Can you come down?
- 46:07And I took him out a lesson in fifth grade.
- 46:10And it turns out there was one of the guy he's called me back
- 46:13said you were amazing. It's either you or this other
- 46:15guy, but he's coming in from frock way.
- 46:17So I don't think he's going to take the job.
- 46:19Turns out he took the job. So he called me and says,
- 46:21listen, you have talent, You're great.
- 46:22And I was fine with that because I was like totally not ready to
- 46:25become ready. I was 2625 turning 26 years old,
- 46:28so I was ready to go back to BMG learning in Lakewood.
- 46:31No problem. He calls me in August and he
- 46:34tells me I have to make a second 7th grade.
- 46:37There's about four or five kids who need a remedial type of
- 46:40class. The 7th grader, he's a legend,
- 46:44beautiful sister. And they're not going to,
- 46:46they're not going to survive his class.
- 46:48He's he's strict. He's and I, he said, would you
- 46:51come down to Auruvain, move to Muncie to teach these five kids?
- 46:58And he's like, I'm embarrassed to tell you the salary, but the
- 47:01most I could give you is $30,000.
- 47:03And for me, $30,000 was like, I haven't made, I haven't had a
- 47:06paycheck. I never got a paycheck in my
- 47:08life. So $30,000 for that Camp CKY, I
- 47:10got paid. I think I had $1100 for the
- 47:12whole summer. So it was like $30,000.
- 47:15That's like, you know, $3000 a month.
- 47:17That's crazy money. So I'm like, yeah, I think I can
- 47:19make that work. I think I could work it out.
- 47:22My wife was obviously thrilled. Obviously, you know the rule
- 47:24that all Muncie girls get their wives to move back to Muncie.
- 47:26It's just a rule that's that's very, very healthy.
- 47:30Just Muncie a Muncie because Muncie is a beautiful place to
- 47:32live. We know how beautiful is people
- 47:33come here to vacation. So it's like all girls, all
- 47:37Muncie girls got their wife, their husbands to come back.
- 47:39I I couldn't find an apartment. I put a sign up in my following
- 47:44those wine store. Anyone who finds us an apartment
- 47:46gets $100.00 gift certificate to the store.
- 47:48Someone called they have a day and then I moved into Abe
- 47:52stickers basement. The the the mayor.
- 47:54I don't know what he does now. Yes, Abe is the mayor.
- 47:57Yeah. So it was great.
- 47:59I love that we have friends that are the mayors living in a town
- 48:02here. This is.
- 48:02This way, this is pre mayor days.
- 48:04I don't know what he was doing then, but I lived in his
- 48:07basement. It was a nice beautiful basement
- 48:09until I got off a knock on the door one day and Abe tells me I
- 48:13got to leave the fire inspector violations.
- 48:16I don't know. Don't say he's a mayor now.
- 48:18It was, it was no. He got to fix it up, but at the
- 48:21end of the day it was the best thing.
- 48:22We moved to Victoria Gardens like old people.
- 48:26We were there for two years and then that.
- 48:29Then yeah, we moved to where I live now.
- 48:32So tell me how this camp thing started.
- 48:34So, so, yeah, so the camp started was my first year.
- 48:37They were looking for head counselor.
- 48:38The year before the head counselor left, he started his
- 48:41own camp. So they needed a new head
- 48:42counselor. I sat at his table when he was
- 48:44still living on court over there off by the college and he liked,
- 48:50he liked what I had to offer. I said, listen, I'm I'm a guy
- 48:52here. I'll take I'll, I'll take it to
- 48:54the next level. You know the camp, let's do it.
- 48:57And we haggled, like I said, over the money.
- 48:59I think it was over $500.00. But he wanted me, so he's like,
- 49:02whatever, let's. Do it.
- 49:03There's a new word for for cheap in the world that I keep hearing
- 49:06is that people don't like to waste.
- 49:08They're waste conscious. They're not they're not being
- 49:10cheap. And it happens to be it's true
- 49:12in many ways that I've seen people do things.
- 49:15I feel like people at the end of the day will just spend money on
- 49:17what they think is valuable. And that's really what it is,
- 49:19you know, and. For sure.
- 49:21The truth is to be honest, because I feel this is a den of
- 49:23honesty. The, the situation there wasn't
- 49:26about cheap or not cheap. Certain people love to win, love
- 49:30to win. So this person I was dealing
- 49:33with was, is a winner. He, he loves to win.
- 49:35So if I would have said, I want to be paid $6000 and he said
- 49:38he'll say let's do 5750, it's not because he can't afford the
- 49:43$250. But then he won the negotiation
- 49:46and he loves winning. So I learned that over the past
- 49:48with this person, it was, it wasn't about the money.
- 49:50It wasn't about being cheap. He's not integrity a cheap
- 49:52person. He does things.
- 49:53He, he, he does things for his family.
- 49:55He goes on vacations, he does things.
- 49:57It's it's, it's a psychological thing, maybe.
- 50:00Yeah. And you also learning to give in
- 50:02as part of growth for sure. OK, it's not worth it.
- 50:05Let. The person get what they need.
- 50:07But there were times that I, I let him have it in the sense of
- 50:11like on the flip side of, of winning is you don't understand.
- 50:15I told him, I said for $250 I could have come into camp the
- 50:19happiest person and I'll come into camp and I'll feel like I'm
- 50:23getting my money's worth and I'm not going to take advantage of
- 50:26and it's amazing. For $250, you're taking that
- 50:29away from me. You don't want your employee not
- 50:31feeling amazing the first day at camp.
- 50:34I would give him $400.00. I'll tell him, you know what,
- 50:37forget 6000. I want you to be happy.
- 50:38I want you to come fully invested the first day.
- 50:40Here's I'm going to give you 6250, you know, and I said that.
- 50:45So he says when you're in the business world, you learn what I
- 50:48said. I said that's the way I look at
- 50:49it. I said I'll agree with you
- 50:50because I don't care about 250 bucks, but I'm coming into camp
- 50:53the first day and I'm feeling like I'm not getting what I
- 50:55asked for. And how much is the difference,
- 50:57$250? I said is that worth it for you
- 50:59and he said it's not about that. I said OK I don't care, fine
- 51:02let's just do 5750. And it didn't bothers me.
- 51:05I'm just thinking it sounded foolish to.
- 51:06Me. Yeah, No, it's a general way of
- 51:07life in terms of negotiating where you make the person feel
- 51:11good about what they're getting versus, you know, winning,
- 51:14right. I heard this this morning on the
- 51:15conference call with us was like, do you want to you want to
- 51:17be right or do you want to get it done?
- 51:19Like, you know, do you want to be happy?
- 51:20Which one do you, which one do you want, you know, which is
- 51:23always a general conversation. So Speaking of being right and
- 51:26happy, So the camp fund, so this idea of helping kids go to camp.
- 51:31So take me through the process of how that happened.
- 51:33So I'm working in camp. I'm seeing the kids in.
- 51:35Camp, Of course, you're seeing how important camp is in
- 51:37general. I know that even from myself,
- 51:38but I see it now I'm living it. I'm I'm running a camp.
- 51:41So I see these kids camp and it was over the years I I
- 51:44transitioned to a different school called in Muncie here and
- 51:47I was 1/5 grader Abbey and it all started on a day about a few
- 51:51weeks before Purim. The camp conversations start
- 51:54coming up and kids are talking about where you going, where you
- 51:56going, where. You're hearing the kids, you
- 51:58mean? Yeah.
- 51:58The kids are talking about, I'm like marking papers, whatever, a
- 52:00few minutes before class and they're talking about they're
- 52:02going to this camp, they're going to that camp.
- 52:04And there's one kid in the back of the room who is absolutely
- 52:06not involved in this conversation and he's just not
- 52:09partaking and he's like a schmuck.
- 52:10A kid, probably the most popular kid in the class, sports wise.
- 52:14Coolness. He was with it, a great kid.
- 52:16And I'm looking at this kid and I'm realizing he's totally.
- 52:20So I go over him afterwards and I say Yitzhak will call him.
- 52:25Where you going for the summer? And he says, oh, I'm, I'm not
- 52:28going to camp this year. I'm going to stay home.
- 52:31So when you go last year, he said he went to one of the
- 52:33popular camps in in Muncie. So you're not going back?
- 52:36He said, no, this year my parents got me a hoverboard.
- 52:39This is what like the hoverboard just came out.
- 52:41I said a hoverboard. What are you, what are you going
- 52:42to do? He says, yeah, they told me I'm
- 52:43just going to I'll have a hoverboard.
- 52:44So I'll go around and I'm like, that's that's ridiculous.
- 52:49That's that's, that's terrible. So I called the parents and I
- 52:52said, I know, you know, I don't want to get involved or
- 52:55anything, but it's like a loved camp last year.
- 52:58Like I know he loves camp. I see what type of Kitty is, is
- 53:01he not going to camp this year? And it's a little uncomfortable.
- 53:03And eventually they said, like, listen to this.
- 53:05Just too overpriced and we can't afford it.
- 53:07We got him a hoverboard. He'll have a good time.
- 53:09He'll go around the neighborhood.
- 53:10He loves going on his hoverboard.
- 53:11He'll be great and I'm like. My heart, by the way, I'm like.
- 53:15This is terrible. You put a kid on a hoverboard
- 53:17all summer. That was like and because
- 53:18because when they gave him the hoverboard, he was.
- 53:20Of course, because. This is what he's going to do.
- 53:23And I said, Oh my gosh. So I called up the camp he went
- 53:27to the year before. I said, how much does your camp
- 53:31cost? They said it's $1800.
- 53:33I said if I get this kid, I told him the name.
- 53:36If I raise $1800, will you take the, you know, you have room
- 53:39because it was late in the game already, like perm time.
- 53:42They said he still owes us money from the year before.
- 53:45I said, listen, I'm not getting involved in, in, you know, past
- 53:48dues. I'm like, if I give you $1800
- 53:51and after poor him, will you take him?
- 53:53And I said, yeah, we'll make room.
- 53:54But but, but no games, you know, no like.
- 53:57So I went around poor him just by night, poor him by night.
- 54:00And I went to a few houses and I was first of all blown away by
- 54:04the the reception I got from people.
- 54:07Like I just started telling the story and they're like, they're
- 54:08writing checks. You're talking about after
- 54:09Magilla laning? After Magilla, it was it was a,
- 54:12it was a later that year. It wasn't like this.
- 54:13It was earlier you. You you went around collecting.
- 54:16Few houses, I didn't even know where I was going.
- 54:18People like told me go to this guy, go to that guy.
- 54:20I was really just following party buses around Muncie.
- 54:22I was like, I had no clue what I was.
- 54:23Removed by the way. Yeah, I had like, oh, there's a
- 54:26group there. Oh, there's a party there, the
- 54:27lights on there, let's go there. And I was by myself, just solo.
- 54:31I came to the houses. I scraped together more about
- 54:33like two $2200 from going to 10 spots.
- 54:37I got him at 2:00 in the morning and like there were still
- 54:39parties going on and I finally I got back home.
- 54:42I pull out all the cash and fives, 10 small bills, checks
- 54:46and it was about $2200 And I called the camp the next day.
- 54:50I'm perm the owner of the camp. I said I have the money for you.
- 54:52I'll drop it off right now if you want.
- 54:55He said you don't drop it off now.
- 54:56OK, he has a spot And I called the parents back and I said yes,
- 55:00I'm going to go to camp, the same camp he went to last year.
- 55:03Don't worry about it's taken care of.
- 55:04That was it and I never heard back.
- 55:07There's no like the parents called me and they said you
- 55:10saved his life. There's none of that.
- 55:11It was just the kid went to camp.
- 55:13What what did it for me that I realized I have to do this is
- 55:15when in September when I saw that kid come back to school and
- 55:19you see the kid come in with a glow, with a vibrance with a
- 55:23certain ready to learn. I'm ready to, to open my swarm
- 55:27again and get back into learning because I just had an amazing
- 55:30summer. You see it in kids.
- 55:32You see them people. It's so easy to see a kid who
- 55:34had a great summer. You don't have to like start
- 55:36asking him. And I looked for this kid and I
- 55:38saw he had a great summer. I'm not part of that camp.
- 55:40I don't know, but you could tell.
- 55:42And he had a tremendous year. The next year in 6th grade and
- 55:447th grade, 8th grade, he was able to move forward.
- 55:46I never heard from the parents again.
- 55:48I maybe the fall is business turned around.
- 55:50I don't know what happened, but the next time I realized I got
- 55:53to do something. You know, if there's one kid,
- 55:55then there's got to be a lot of kids who need this help.
- 55:59So again, totally unofficial. I went for him again, I
- 56:01collected with under my my Scholes name.
- 56:04Like I said, who people who's I make the check out to.
- 56:06There's no, there's no, there's no account Muncie camp fund.
- 56:08There's no. So I said to make out to my show
- 56:11and they, my show was very accommodating.
- 56:13They were able to to use their account to, to, to there was
- 56:16there was families in my own community.
- 56:17They needed the help anyway. And I reached out to some camps,
- 56:21summer Baim and a few kids again, who needed help going to
- 56:25camp. We helped 5 kids be in camp and
- 56:28that we were paying the whole, the whole ride.
- 56:30Like these were kids who were sitting at home and now they're
- 56:33going to camp 5 kids. We raised about $8000.
- 56:36I say we, but it was really, really me and, and, and one
- 56:38other guy from my Shoal. We went around and then the
- 56:42third year I'm like, listen, why am I spending so much time
- 56:45trying to find kids who need help by calling Rabaeum and
- 56:48principals and things. There's some fish habits of
- 56:50Rockland. They have the list of people who
- 56:52need help. They know that families are
- 56:54struggling the most. Why not just partner with them?
- 56:57And I approached Alan Rosenstack and I said, listen, I don't want
- 57:00to put any more financial strength on on top of Chavez.
- 57:04I'll do your fundraising. I'll bring in all the money.
- 57:07I just want to be affiliated with your with with you with,
- 57:11with your program, with what? Your institution, with your
- 57:12organization, what you have going on.
- 57:13Resources. Yeah, your resources.
- 57:15Data your information. Your secretaries, your, your,
- 57:18your software, everything that you have.
- 57:20You did a JV with Tom Chavez, a joint venture.
- 57:23There it is. Yeah.
- 57:24So I said and and again, I'll take care of the budget.
- 57:27Yeah. So it was like a win, win for
- 57:28everybody and. That's what happened.
- 57:30So yeah, so we decided. So I was that, yeah, he said no
- 57:33problem. You know, there's definitely,
- 57:35they're always looking for people, he says.
- 57:36But you have to run like, I can't take this on.
- 57:38He's told me. I said I got it, I'll do it,
- 57:41I'll do it myself. I'm just curious for a second
- 57:43and don't jump down my throat for this, but I'm curious
- 57:47because it's just bothering me. Ever since you said it, why are
- 57:50the schools not responsible to think at least about the
- 57:55children going to camp? But it always bothered me that
- 57:57schools, you know, throw out kids and then they just like
- 58:00don't think about the continuity of the child.
- 58:02And that's something that really frustrates me.
- 58:04And I think most schools have done a much better job today
- 58:06than they used to. But why is it?
- 58:09Why is it that camps not on their radar to just figure out
- 58:11that every kid should have something to do in the summer
- 58:14that's productive? I think when you say schools, I
- 58:17don't know if it's, I think we're a bayum.
- 58:19Do I think it's on their a bayum's radar?
- 58:21They'll they'll know if a kid doesn't have anything.
- 58:23No, because the A Bay means that each Rebbe is on their own.
- 58:26The school I'm talking about having a functional system.
- 58:28Yes, but they're not going to. They can't financially.
- 58:30No, no, no. Just to understand, to identify,
- 58:32to, to, to, to talk to the parents, to make.
- 58:34I don't know. I think they're well aware of
- 58:36the of the need for it that a kid.
- 58:38Has to be, they're saying. What should they do?
- 58:40What? Are they supposed to right I.
- 58:41Don't know. Make awareness to it.
- 58:42I don't know. The, the thing we're lacking
- 58:44here is funds. That's the bottom line.
- 58:46It's and there's no camp that's saying.
- 58:48I think if a camp rejects the kid and it's not about funds,
- 58:51it's about the kid. Like just we don't want your
- 58:53kid. Let's see the sleepway camp.
- 58:54I think there are Rabin and Manal and and a principal that
- 58:57will get involved in the phone call.
- 58:59But here it's just like, yeah, we'll take him no problem.
- 59:01It's just who's paying. Right.
- 59:02And the reason why I guess you couldn't go to the camps to see
- 59:04who's not coming in for financial challenges is because
- 59:06they don't even apply in the 1st place, right?
- 59:08So that's why going to Tom Clay was a smart move.
- 59:10That's the whole nother side of the months again, fund is is the
- 59:13the the dysfunction of it, which we'll get to in a second.
- 59:17But that that is like parents in June and July are calling me and
- 59:22I'm like, it's June. Camp starts in a in a two weeks.
- 59:25Are you waking up now? But along with the financial
- 59:28stress that comes with the family comes a level of
- 59:30dysfunction. Usually.
- 59:32I mean, they're so bogged down with how we paying our electric
- 59:34bill. We don't have time to know where
- 59:36Yankees going to camp, you know, and, and the kid suffers from
- 59:39that. So now it's June and the kid
- 59:41comes home and he's been asking his parents, what's the story?
- 59:44What's the story? Where am I going to camp?
- 59:45So the the back get into the wall where where's my kid going
- 59:48for the next 8 weeks, 9 weeks, 10 weeks.
- 59:51And now they're calling me and I'm like, I wish you would have
- 59:54just called me a month ago because your kids 15 and he
- 59:57wants to go to Romo. Romo's registration has been
- 1:00:00closed for 3-4 months already. So what?
- 1:00:04How much is it to help you? I don't know me something you
- 1:00:07could do. So I would call her by Pfeiffer.
- 1:00:08I'll call these camps and I would say, listen, the first
- 1:00:11thing they want to hear is that all the finances are like we're
- 1:00:13not, we're not we're not going to make ourselves crazy to take
- 1:00:16a kid and we're going to chase the money.
- 1:00:18So when you call and the first thing you say is listener by
- 1:00:20Pfeiffer is a great kid. I wanted to let you know, by the
- 1:00:23way, 3600, whatever it is fully taken care of.
- 1:00:26I can send you a check right now.
- 1:00:27So then he tells me, listen, I was it.
- 1:00:29So listen, I'm Monty camp fund. I give you thousands of dollars
- 1:00:32every year for different different scholarships and when
- 1:00:36you have a relationship with camps, so they're a little bit
- 1:00:38more open to listening to you. So I said, listen, one kid a
- 1:00:42summer, like usually I'll tell camps, you got it.
- 1:00:44You got to take one kid from me. And again, financially covered,
- 1:00:47fully covered. So you don't have to chase the
- 1:00:49money. You don't have to be busy with
- 1:00:50with with chasing who are raw over this.
- 1:00:53And that's the other side, getting in the kid, getting in
- 1:00:56the kid the. Process, which I'd love to talk
- 1:00:58about in a minute. How many kids are you involved
- 1:01:00with these days? Last year we helped about 850
- 1:01:03kids. What?
- 1:01:05Wow. Some some 150 dollars $200
- 1:01:09scholarship. You know, it's funny by by the
- 1:01:11way, and and I'm, I'm not embarrassed to admit this, that
- 1:01:13I go to your bowling thing. I have a team, but she's team
- 1:01:16has won many times and you know, we help sponsor it.
- 1:01:19I, I, I would never know how many kids you have and what kind
- 1:01:22of operation you have going on. That's a lot of kids on the.
- 1:01:24First day we had 150 applicants. What what made you do this
- 1:01:28bowling thing? And so, and let's talk about
- 1:01:31that for a second, because many people that run but not for
- 1:01:34profits, and I know that many of our listeners are involved and
- 1:01:36not for profits, always wonder what should I do, what kind of
- 1:01:38tournament? Like, you know, we created a
- 1:01:41volleyball tournament years ago in Muncie, which is phenomenal,
- 1:01:43does really well. And it's always difficult to
- 1:01:46think of what else can I do besides a pool party with cigar
- 1:01:49rollers to get people to come and participate.
- 1:01:51So how did that happen? I think you have to do something
- 1:01:53that you're passionate about. I was walking back from a fire
- 1:01:57station. They were doing a car show and
- 1:01:59there's like hundreds of people there and I'm like, they all
- 1:02:01came to do just look at cars and they're giving donations and
- 1:02:03whatever. So I was walking back with a
- 1:02:05friend of mine to my house with my kids and I said why don't we
- 1:02:08do this for the then we call the kids in camp, which is a
- 1:02:11different organization now, but we said why don't we do like a
- 1:02:14car show? No Jews do car shows.
- 1:02:17Why don't we do actually? A great idea I I Cam.
- 1:02:19Simcha does. They do like the car day, you
- 1:02:21know, when all the cars, fancy cars come and they, they come to
- 1:02:23camp Simcha like, yeah, but like, maybe I don't know Jewish
- 1:02:26cars. So he's like, that's ridiculous.
- 1:02:28Whatever He said, let's do something that we we know about.
- 1:02:30What do you know about cars? You know, we just saw all these,
- 1:02:33you know, Plymouth voyage and he saw all these crazy cars, but
- 1:02:36like, we don't know anything about cars.
- 1:02:38So he's like, what do you know about?
- 1:02:39So I said I'm a bowler, I know bowling, I like the bowl.
- 1:02:43So he's like, OK, so let's do a bowling thing.
- 1:02:45And we stopped like literally in the street and we're like, does
- 1:02:47anyone do a bowling thing? And we knew there was Mayor
- 1:02:51Young did the did the volleyball thing, then the Lighthouse does
- 1:02:53the volleyball thing. Are you young?
- 1:02:54Yeah. And then RCS does the hockey
- 1:02:57and. And there's the all.
- 1:02:59Sports are taking care. Of there's, there's everything,
- 1:03:02right? So, so what's going to, you
- 1:03:03know, And then we're like, yeah, let's do bowling.
- 1:03:06So we've no one else did it. And it's something that I can
- 1:03:09relate to, I think. I think any type of these
- 1:03:11things, you have to relate to it.
- 1:03:12You can't just say like, let's do whatever, let's do
- 1:03:14parasailing. And even though you just don't
- 1:03:16know the malacha, you got to be involved.
- 1:03:18You have to know, you have to have passion for this.
- 1:03:19What's? Your average bowl so.
- 1:03:22One seventies, one 80s. I'm not like, you know, 200
- 1:03:24bowlers, but. One 80s is not so easy, I can
- 1:03:27tell you. But I enjoy it, you know, I
- 1:03:29enjoy it every time I did. My family growing up, we always
- 1:03:31had money down on bowling. It was always like, you know, a
- 1:03:33big thing in my family. So my father's a bowl and my
- 1:03:36brothers are bowlers. So it was just something that
- 1:03:38spoke to me. You can't run an organization.
- 1:03:40You don't. It doesn't.
- 1:03:40It's a very kosher form of entertainment.
- 1:03:43By the way. Bowling.
- 1:03:43I like it. It was, it was beautiful.
- 1:03:45So the first year we did it and it was also easy because who are
- 1:03:49my teams? The camps, the camps need the
- 1:03:52funds, the camps need the scholarships for their kids.
- 1:03:55So you, you don't have to raise. It's very hard for let's say I
- 1:03:59don't camp clever. If I go to somebody's house and
- 1:04:00I say, listen, I'm raising money for the camp clever scholarship
- 1:04:03fund to look at you like, isn't that your business, right?
- 1:04:06Like what you're so you're raising from your right pocket
- 1:04:08to your left pocket. Like what, what are you doing?
- 1:04:10You know, it's, it's uncomfortable.
- 1:04:11People don't like to do it. So I said here to all the camp
- 1:04:14owners, I'm giving you a platform to raise money for
- 1:04:17scholarships that you don't have to do that.
- 1:04:19Do it through the monthly camp fund.
- 1:04:20But help me, help me raise money for the neediest families in, in
- 1:04:24your they're going to your camps.
- 1:04:26So that was like 10 lanes, you know, out of 24 lanes in New
- 1:04:29City Bowl, 10 of the lanes worth of camps, you know, all the
- 1:04:32camps that came to join. And then the other ten were
- 1:04:34people who just wanted to have a good time, but no one really
- 1:04:36knew what it was going to be about.
- 1:04:37So I went really over the top like crazy food a lot, live
- 1:04:41music. It was it was a real fun night
- 1:04:44out, like a ultimate men's night out type of thing.
- 1:04:45And people loved it. And the next year I knew it was
- 1:04:48great because I think you even told me this.
- 1:04:50He says, you know, you did a good job when you call people
- 1:04:52next year and they're all back in.
- 1:04:53I think you actually told me that after the first year, He
- 1:04:56says. Then you know you did a good job
- 1:04:57and we made phone calls the next year and we ever want to come
- 1:05:00back. My favorite part is when I stop
- 1:05:02everybody and I say 100, I want $100 for every strike for the
- 1:05:06next 60 seconds and it just gets it gets everyone riled up.
- 1:05:09Yeah, it's awesome. It's really awesome.
- 1:05:11So that you first year we bought in like $80,000, you know,
- 1:05:14$80,000 and we spent like 90. So I only, you know, Toko
- 1:05:18Shabbos, obviously they, they said whatever you don't cover,
- 1:05:21you're part of, you know, you're part of our families.
- 1:05:23So we'll, we'll take care of it. I said I don't want you to have
- 1:05:26to take care of anything. So that year though, we did the
- 1:05:30registration process all online, a simple job form that you had
- 1:05:33to just fill out. We were so flooded because it
- 1:05:36was like anyone, anyone and everyone needs help with camp.
- 1:05:39It's not like tuition. Tuition you can spread out 12
- 1:05:41months, 10 months throughout the year.
- 1:05:43You know, you pay here, you pay there.
- 1:05:45You even if you're struggling to pay tuition, you make it up this
- 1:05:47time because camps are very business oriented as they get
- 1:05:50run. That means everything has to be
- 1:05:52paid up by March 1st. And the best the camp will do
- 1:05:57for you is that you spread it, spread it over three months.
- 1:06:00If you apply for that like if you ask the camp can I pay in
- 1:06:04payments, they'll they'll work with you.
- 1:06:06But it's like March 1st paid in full or your kid loses a spot.
- 1:06:10And if you have 4 kids that are going to camp and each camp is
- 1:06:14$2000. So more sleepway camp is is in
- 1:06:17the $3000 range. Let's say day camps is 18117
- 1:06:20hundred. So you need 10 grand after PESA,
- 1:06:23after Poram expenses, you need $10,000 to put down by March 1st
- 1:06:26for your get to a camp. Who has who has that money?
- 1:06:29That's like what the 1% is. Who has that that type of just
- 1:06:32money laying around $10,000 for camp.
- 1:06:34Very few people. So everyone struggles with this.
- 1:06:38So that first year we had like 1000 applications because it was
- 1:06:42just online. Everyone just filled out the
- 1:06:43thing online. We realized it wasn't going to
- 1:06:45work. So we, we, we chose from the
- 1:06:47neediest families and we helped them out.
- 1:06:49And then from there it was an in person application process.
- 1:06:53So that dwindled it down to like 405 hundred people.
- 1:06:55And we just grow every year, which is more and more people as
- 1:06:58our name gets out there and people need help.
- 1:06:59It's just. I have to say thank you for what
- 1:07:01you're doing and congratulations on building such an amazing, you
- 1:07:05know, system to help, you know, such a need that I guess is just
- 1:07:08overlooked. Right.
- 1:07:11Every every year, like this time when I start, I wake up in the
- 1:07:14morning, I'm like, I'm not doing it this year.
- 1:07:16It's so hard to every fundraiser will tell you, you got to bring
- 1:07:20in the funds, you got to get the teams, you got to get the
- 1:07:22bowling alleys, you got to get the caterer, the music, you have
- 1:07:24to get everything involved. It's, it's so much work.
- 1:07:26And I'm like, I can't do it. I just can't do it.
- 1:07:30It's just too much. And then you remember like the
- 1:07:32phone calls of from the Rebbe, from the parents, from the
- 1:07:35manal, from the camp owners, for the people that say like, by the
- 1:07:38way, you save this kids life, this kid would have been
- 1:07:41literally on the streets the whole summer.
- 1:07:43Parents call me telling me how even before I sent them, how
- 1:07:47their kids struggling and you're this guy.
- 1:07:48And if he's not in camp this summer, we're going to lose him,
- 1:07:52you know? And, and that's what I take that
- 1:07:55deep breath, you know, you stop and you take a step back and
- 1:07:57you're like, OK, we got to do this, you know?
- 1:07:59You know, we got to make it happen, so.
- 1:08:00It's amazing that you have that. I'm curious you have that in
- 1:08:03life in general. I mean, because when you have,
- 1:08:05when you have a feeling of I can't do this, I can't wake up
- 1:08:08now, I can't be busy, but you have those phone calls to hang
- 1:08:10on to. It's a big motivator.
- 1:08:13What about in general in life? Do you as a as a Rebbe, as a
- 1:08:15Mahana? Yeah, for sure.
- 1:08:17You understand the concept of anxieties and depressions and
- 1:08:20there's. There's every person needs.
- 1:08:24I always tell my class the first day of school, there's a there's
- 1:08:27a story. I'll make a quick, I mean, I
- 1:08:29could say a story for like an hour.
- 1:08:30Say this story. Here's a story of of of a bunch
- 1:08:34of kids in yeshiva late Thursday night.
- 1:08:36So I don't know if you, I'm sure you remember Scott and Todd in
- 1:08:38the morning, the phone scams. So we lived off that.
- 1:08:40Love the phone scam. Talk to the Freedom.
- 1:08:44So they were the best, right? So there's a bunch of boys in
- 1:08:46yeshiva who decided they're going to do phone scams and
- 1:08:48their idea of fun was they're going to call up on him and
- 1:08:50they're going to ask them crazy questions.
- 1:08:53The biggest goddio limit in in America.
- 1:08:55And if you ask them a question, you move on to the next round,
- 1:08:57the. Show this is a thing that you
- 1:08:59did. Not me.
- 1:08:59No, no, no. There's a story that that that I
- 1:09:02heard that. Happened that happened OK,
- 1:09:03because I, I, I know these types of things happened still till
- 1:09:06today. Yeah, so they, so they put a
- 1:09:08bunch of our bottom in a in a paper, put it in a hat.
- 1:09:11OK, you're first. It picks it out.
- 1:09:13Rebi Solbelski. So the guy, oh, my God.
- 1:09:16OK, he goes to the pay phone and Shiva rings.
- 1:09:19The Belsky answers the phone leading place.
- 1:09:21Sick, right, He says. Why if a chicken crosses the
- 1:09:24road on the left side, it still cost you a you know.
- 1:09:27So hello. And they're like OK, dog done
- 1:09:30it. He hangs up the phone.
- 1:09:31He moves on. And.
- 1:09:35The next boy goes and it's like Kaminetsky and he asks his if a
- 1:09:39cow and a donkey thing, and it's like asking these ridiculous
- 1:09:42Silas and again, your Bianca was like you asking they and be like
- 1:09:44that's it. Like it was like a four second
- 1:09:46timer. OK, you're good.
- 1:09:47Hang up right and you made on to that next time.
- 1:09:49So comes Yankees turn, let's say right and Yankee get pics of the
- 1:09:52thing Remesha Feinstein. And he's like, Oh my God, I am
- 1:09:56not calling the to to ask him. All right, you're out.
- 1:10:00And Yankee was very competitive kid.
- 1:10:02He's not losing this, you know. So he says, OK, I'll do it, I'll
- 1:10:05do it, I'll do it. So he gets the pay phone.
- 1:10:06He calls and the rabbitson answers the phone rabbitson
- 1:10:10Feinstein and says Remesha is sleeping.
- 1:10:13But Remesha gets all the time, right?
- 1:10:15Life and death situations. Is it is it a life?
- 1:10:18Like I'll wake him up. So he's like he's like puts the
- 1:10:22phone against his chest and he's like, he's sleeping like, OK, so
- 1:10:26you're out. No, it's not.
- 1:10:27Oh, he's sleeping. What a wake him up, Wake him up.
- 1:10:30Are you nuts? So he takes the phone back.
- 1:10:33He says, OK, yeah, can you wake him up?
- 1:10:36So OK, one second and there everything goes and wakes up in
- 1:10:39my show. And he I don't know, I guess
- 1:10:41washes nickel vessel, says he figures it's a Shiloh and Aloka.
- 1:10:45And he comes to the phone hello. And the boy asks, is silly
- 1:10:48Kasha, you know, if a turtle and whatever and who knows what he
- 1:10:51said. Amish is quiet.
- 1:10:53He says, I'm sorry, what's your name?
- 1:10:55And the boy of course, doesn't want to say his name.
- 1:10:59He says so much, says, OK, you don't you don't have to say
- 1:11:01name. What will you Shiva you from?
- 1:11:02What will you Shiva you calling from?
- 1:11:04He doesn't want to say. The boy says, I don't want to
- 1:11:06say. He says, OK, OK, what are you
- 1:11:08learning? He says I'm learning, Kadushan.
- 1:11:12OK, let me let me ask you, Shilin Kadushan, if this kid had
- 1:11:18no clue what Mishra was saying. Somebody says get a Gamora and
- 1:11:22they're all the friends are like, why are you still on the
- 1:11:24phone? You know, to hang out.
- 1:11:25He's like, he wants me to get a Gamora.
- 1:11:27I don't know. He wants me to get a Gamora.
- 1:11:28Like OK, so get a Gamora. So he puts the phone down.
- 1:11:31He wants to be as soon as he gets the condition, he comes
- 1:11:33back. He says, OK, let's start from
- 1:11:36the beginning and she goes through the Gamora.
- 1:11:40He says he got the Gamora. Yeah, I have the Gamora.
- 1:11:42His friends are like what are you doing?
- 1:11:44And he says OK, now look at Rasha, you have rasha.
- 1:11:46He says tasis, you learn tasis. I think so.
- 1:11:49It says OK, look at tasis. He says OK, you got tasis.
- 1:11:52No, I don't really get. Let's do tasis again, Ramesha
- 1:11:54says, and they do tasis 4 times. He says, now let me ask you
- 1:11:56kasha and tasis. He said ask them a kasha that
- 1:11:59you got it. No, 48 minutes.
- 1:12:02The guy told me 48 minutes on the phone with Ramesha.
- 1:12:05You got the kasha. Yeah, now I got the kasha.
- 1:12:07When you're ready, go through this tasis and share.
- 1:12:09Ask him this kasha. OK, the guy goes to shear.
- 1:12:12The next day the rebbe starts to tysis.
- 1:12:14The kid raises his hand. This is the Rebbe's thinking.
- 1:12:17What does Yankee want to make me crazy?
- 1:12:18Now what let's on this does does Yankee have his up his sleeve to
- 1:12:21make me nuts? Finally the Yankees persistent.
- 1:12:24You know his hands in the air. I have a costume.
- 1:12:25I have a costume. I have a costume.
- 1:12:27OK, Yankee, what's your kasha? And he asked him the kasha.
- 1:12:30The rebbe's like Yankee. Where do you get the Kasha from?
- 1:12:32He says, I got it from Amisha Remesha.
- 1:12:36Feinstein says, yeah, this is OK.
- 1:12:37I know Yankee doesn't know, probably don't worry much.
- 1:12:39Feinstein is, it's amazing, kasha.
- 1:12:41He says, yeah, I know. OK, I have to think about it
- 1:12:44comes Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday.
- 1:12:46He says, I'm slipping your kasha.
- 1:12:47Thursday, Friday, Friday comes in.
- 1:12:49The rebbe's beaming. He says, Yankee, I have a
- 1:12:51turrets to your kasha. And he tells them the turrets,
- 1:12:53and Yankee loves the turrets. And he says, OK, I'm going to
- 1:12:56try to tell Remotesha the turrets, and I'm trying to get a
- 1:12:57thing. And Yankee comes home and he
- 1:12:59runs to his room and he's bawling.
- 1:13:01He's bawling his eyes out in his pillow, and his father thinks
- 1:13:04something happened on the bus and the thing something, and he
- 1:13:06comes knocking the door. Yankee, you OK?
- 1:13:08And Yankee just keeps saying Remaisha cares about me.
- 1:13:11Remaisha cares about me. Remaisha cares about me.
- 1:13:14Remaisha cares about me. And he's.
- 1:13:16I wasn't always talking about. He says if Remaisha cares about
- 1:13:18me, then I have to care about myself.
- 1:13:21And that Yankee says he became a red beat.
- 1:13:23He's a big we saw him in Lakewood now.
- 1:13:25And he said from that moment, he he never felt that anyone cared
- 1:13:28about him. Not one Rebbe, not a manal, no
- 1:13:30one. No one cared if he was no one
- 1:13:32cared if he Steig, no one cared if he was successful.
- 1:13:35There was no one in his life that when he got down in the
- 1:13:37dumps, he could say, I have to keep going because I know this
- 1:13:40person cares about me. And he says that prank, that
- 1:13:43phone scam, he saw the moisture that finds him.
- 1:13:46The God of our door cared about him.
- 1:13:48And he said if there's a person in the world that cares about me
- 1:13:50so much that he's going to get up out of bed, he's going to put
- 1:13:52up with my jokes in Lutsanas and he's going to care that I'm a
- 1:13:55Tsiach, then I have to care about myself.
- 1:13:57So when you want to know that a guy gets out of bed and he's in
- 1:13:59a dark place and he's not going through Yiddish Kai well, and
- 1:14:02he's really suffering and he has no reason to come to Shiva that
- 1:14:06day and he has no reason to go with the chakras and he has no
- 1:14:08reason. He has to find someone in his
- 1:14:10life, whether it's a Rebbe or father, someone that he knows.
- 1:14:14I have to do this because this person cares about me.
- 1:14:16This person cares that I'm a Tsiach, that I want to do well,
- 1:14:19and I have to. If he cares about me, then I
- 1:14:21have to. I have to keep up with that.
- 1:14:23I have to do well. So I have a father who I know
- 1:14:27always cared about me and Herbian who cared about me, and
- 1:14:29Rasheeda who cared about me. I was once going through
- 1:14:31through. I went through a procedure.
- 1:14:33I had to get a MRI and I was petrified what this MRI is going
- 1:14:37to show, right? Everyone's been through the
- 1:14:39thing. You're waiting for the results.
- 1:14:40So I, I get a thing and, and I go to the, to the Hudson Valley
- 1:14:43radiology and I'm go through the, the, the MRI process and
- 1:14:47Bach Hashem, everything's clean. Everything comes like clear.
- 1:14:50But I told, I call Shiva that morning.
- 1:14:52I said, Rebbe, I'm going through something.
- 1:14:54It's, you know, I'm just going to check it out.
- 1:14:57So he says first he gave me because he says it could be 10
- 1:15:00things, 9 out of 10, no problem. So you're worried about the one
- 1:15:05thing that it might be that you're making yourself crazy
- 1:15:07for. Stop worrying so much about
- 1:15:09everything. I said, OK, just Davin, you
- 1:15:12know, 2:00 in the morning. This is an Abe stickers
- 1:15:15basement. I had no service.
- 1:15:16So my phone was on like the window sill, you know, the only
- 1:15:18place that has service. All of a sudden I hear a crash
- 1:15:22and I go my phone's on the floor and it only happened when it
- 1:15:24would vibrate. It would shake it off the thing.
- 1:15:26And at 2:40 in the morning, I I put my phone back in.
- 1:15:29I see a missed call from and he's like no Husky what happened
- 1:15:33at 240? He's still thinking he can't go
- 1:15:35to sleep until he knows what happened to my results in of of
- 1:15:38my he can call me. He can't wait till next morning.
- 1:15:40He wakes me up. I'm like, no, everything's good.
- 1:15:42He's like, oh, OK, I've got enough.
- 1:15:45OK, good night. When you have people in your
- 1:15:48life that care about you, it changes your whole perspective
- 1:15:51of of of what you live for. You have you, you have the
- 1:15:55highest to make them to make to, to live for them.
- 1:15:59And as a parent also, you have to install, listen to your kids.
- 1:16:01You have to show them that there's nothing more in in my
- 1:16:06life that I care about than my kids.
- 1:16:08And today, nowadays, right, you know the story with the iPhone.
- 1:16:10What would you, what would you want to be an iPhone?
- 1:16:12Because my father would look at me.
- 1:16:16No, the third grader, I'm first. I'm getting over that story.
- 1:16:20That story was. 3rd grade Moto who says.
- 1:16:23Wow, That was a great story. OK, the third grade.
- 1:16:26Yeah. I, I, I want to tell you
- 1:16:27something. I I I'm also an emotional
- 1:16:29person. You know, you're in the back of
- 1:16:31the bus. I'm not afraid to admit it.
- 1:16:32It's an emotional thing that you were saying, but caring about
- 1:16:35someone. But but that the concept of what
- 1:16:37you're saying, which is resonating with me a lot, is
- 1:16:39that when you're going through a challenge to find that person
- 1:16:43that cares about you, it's not that difficult if you look for
- 1:16:45it, right? If you just make those phone
- 1:16:47calls and find those people and find that mentor, that friend,
- 1:16:49that brother, that neighbor, that person that you never even
- 1:16:51thought cared about you. You said before to reach out
- 1:16:54some of them. A lot of times people don't
- 1:16:55know. Maybe you're going through a
- 1:16:57tremendous struggle and no one knows.
- 1:16:59And if you would open, pick up the phone, send out a text like
- 1:17:02you're saying, anyone you don't feel comfortable going to a
- 1:17:03parent, go to REB. You don't feel, go to the REB,
- 1:17:05go to a neighbor, go to a Rob, go to somebody.
- 1:17:08You'll be shocked that you'll find that at least this person
- 1:17:11now, now this person is struggling with you.
- 1:17:13He's in there with you. You're not alone.
- 1:17:15The worst place is to be alone. Amazing iPhone people.
- 1:17:17OK, Yeah. Sorry, the iPhone is the third
- 1:17:19grade teacher who puts the journal today class is going to
- 1:17:23be the journal entry is please write down what you want to be
- 1:17:25when you grow up. That's the journal entry for
- 1:17:28today. And everyone writes A
- 1:17:29firefighter and a basketball player and I think and one kid
- 1:17:31writes I want to be an iPhone. So the parents said you must not
- 1:17:36understood the the the project there.
- 1:17:39It's not like what are you dressing up for perm?
- 1:17:40This is what you want to be Grow up says no, I want to be an
- 1:17:42iPhone. So he asked him, why do you want
- 1:17:44to be an iPhone? He says, so that way my parents
- 1:17:47could give me the attention and it's and today it's like with
- 1:17:52with all the apps and thing, it's like kids get so lost and
- 1:17:56parents try and and I myself when I'm doing this fundraiser,
- 1:17:59it's like you get so wrapped up to it and people try to keep
- 1:18:02their phones in their car and people try to, you know, turn
- 1:18:04their phones on silent when they go home.
- 1:18:06But there's nothing more like I said before, precious than than
- 1:18:10giving that undivided attention when at bedtime, at at in the
- 1:18:14summer, playing, playing sports and just that one-on-one the kid
- 1:18:18and then your kid will grow up knowing that my father cares
- 1:18:21about me unadulterated. Like really, you can't fake
- 1:18:25that. It has to be sincere as to be
- 1:18:26genuine. And my father, my parent, my
- 1:18:29Rebbe, whoever it is in my life, there is someone there that I
- 1:18:33have to live up to, that I have to get out of bed for.
- 1:18:36And you hope it's apparent, but if it's not, like we said
- 1:18:39before, reach out to someone. I have a question.
- 1:18:41I have a question for you as a Rebbe.
- 1:18:44If you're in your system, you're, you know, your school
- 1:18:47and you see another Rebbe, he's just not he's not cut out for
- 1:18:51this. And you're like, I don't know.
- 1:18:54He, he's, you know, to be, to be a Rebbe is someone that has
- 1:18:58confidence, someone that you know, can connect with people
- 1:19:00and teach Torah. But it's much more than that,
- 1:19:02obviously, right? It's someone that understands in
- 1:19:04their DNA they were raised well to know how to respond well, how
- 1:19:09to not get angry. You're a Rebbe and you're seeing
- 1:19:11it happen, evident next to you. What do you do?
- 1:19:16It's tough. It's tough.
- 1:19:18I, I would say like it, it, it's even harder in the, in the
- 1:19:20business world. You see a colleague who's like
- 1:19:22just making mistakes, you know, and you want to just scream at
- 1:19:24him and tell him. So you go over them and you
- 1:19:26think like in a nice way, you just know, just do it like this
- 1:19:28instead of this and everything will be great.
- 1:19:31With a Rebbe, your, your classroom is like your domain.
- 1:19:35It's like you're, you're the king of that castle, you know.
- 1:19:38So for another person to come in and say, don't do it this way,
- 1:19:41do it this way, it's like very, it's very personal.
- 1:19:45It's very hard Even so, to go over to another Rebbe and
- 1:19:48everybody has a style. The hundreds are Herbie right.
- 1:19:51Every Rebbe has a certain style that he works with some Rebbe
- 1:19:53and restrictor. Some Rebbe are more loose.
- 1:19:55Some Rebbe. Everyone has their their steak,
- 1:19:57their style that they do usually in manal, a good manal, a good
- 1:20:01principal will see it. But there's a certain fraternity
- 1:20:04also in Rebbe in the coat in that coffee room, you know,
- 1:20:07where a beam just see the struggles of other beam.
- 1:20:10I've been in school when I see Rebbe what's called losing the
- 1:20:13class. And you lose the class.
- 1:20:15That means no matter what you say, the kids will just laugh at
- 1:20:18you. Sit down.
- 1:20:19It means nothing. Be quiet.
- 1:20:20The whole day. You're just doing that.
- 1:20:21Sit down. Be quiet.
- 1:20:22Can you please be quiet? Can you stop disturbing?
- 1:20:24Could you take out your Gemara with it?
- 1:20:25And then. OK, everybody say let's go.
- 1:20:27Let's start. I can.
- 1:20:28Could you please sit down? Could you please stop talking?
- 1:20:30Could you get out? Get out.
- 1:20:31The other day I have to go to the principal or vice.
- 1:20:33I'll be right back. OK, let's start again.
- 1:20:36I could you sit. Stop.
- 1:20:38Don't throw their band. Fall into that when they lose
- 1:20:41the class. And, and you can't teach that
- 1:20:43way. And many times a senior Rebbe or
- 1:20:47veteran Rebbe will pull it. I got tremendous amount of
- 1:20:50experience from, from my father. I, I would call my father
- 1:20:52crying, say that I, I can't, I can't teach.
- 1:20:55I'm at the worst Rebbe. I come in, they don't listen.
- 1:20:58Since you're not the worst Rebbe, slow down.
- 1:21:01Try this approach. Try that approach to a point
- 1:21:04system. You're being too dry.
- 1:21:05You're being you're, you're giving too much.
- 1:21:07You have to gain back that authority.
- 1:21:11There's a lot of abeim who who So what happens is I think what
- 1:21:14you're talking about is sometimes a Rep excuse me, a
- 1:21:17Rebbe goes through and he just it's an age thing.
- 1:21:20I know a lot of schools they put a certain age limit that after a
- 1:21:24certain 65, there's a year to year.
- 1:21:28You know, are you are you fit for it?
- 1:21:30Because it is nothing. I'll tell you more exhausting
- 1:21:34than teaching. It's it's you're standing the
- 1:21:37whole time. You're you're flying in the
- 1:21:39classroom. It is icon home soaked and just
- 1:21:42at a certain age you just can't do it.
- 1:21:44You're not you're not connecting to that guy.
- 1:21:46You're losing that buck. You're losing that kid because
- 1:21:49you don't have the cafes for it. So at that point, I don't think
- 1:21:53it should come from a Rebbe because the that Rebbe still
- 1:21:55thinks he has it and that Rebbe still thinks like, no, I'm fine,
- 1:21:58I'm good. I think some of them do you see
- 1:22:0067 year old Baim, we're still knocking, still doing amazing.
- 1:22:04That's usually when I will step in and say like, listen, it's
- 1:22:08not, it's time to, you know, let's talk about your, let's
- 1:22:11talk about your. What's it called the?
- 1:22:12Retirement. The the money you get
- 1:22:15afterwards, yeah, Pension, let's talk about.
- 1:22:17Your exactly I hear. So you're saying if if you
- 1:22:20notice something, I guess you would go to the Manaho perhaps
- 1:22:22or? I don't know if it's so much
- 1:22:24your place, you you maybe to talk, but.
- 1:22:26You are noticing though it happens it.
- 1:22:28Happens sometimes, but it's usually one incident like a
- 1:22:31Rebbe and then the Rebbe will just tell you he lost it.
- 1:22:33Like if a Rebbe screams at a kid, you know, and then you're
- 1:22:36close enough with the Rebbe because you work with him.
- 1:22:38So as a, as a fraternity with this, you go and like, you know,
- 1:22:41next time, I don't know if that's works with this kid.
- 1:22:43This kid does not respond to being screamed that you got to
- 1:22:46take him over by himself privately and tell him this is
- 1:22:49the way it has to be. And he'll say like, oh, thank
- 1:22:50you so much. OK, I didn't know that that's
- 1:22:51the way this kid works with or whatever it is usually it's real
- 1:22:55like a novice, a first year, second year Rebbe.
- 1:22:58But. What grade are you used to?
- 1:23:00What ages of? Kids I did 5th, 7th and in high
- 1:23:04school 10th, 12th. You were all over, Really.
- 1:23:07OK. Which one is the most
- 1:23:08challenging you think? 7th grade by far is every Rebbe.
- 1:23:12I think most of them will tell you because there's a lot of a
- 1:23:17lot of other things going on, a lot of disturbances, a lot of
- 1:23:19distractions. It's a bar mitzvah year, so
- 1:23:22there's a lot of focus on the bar mitzvah.
- 1:23:24So any bar mitzvah kid, for probably a month and a half,
- 1:23:26he's checked out, he's his potato, he's leaning, he's
- 1:23:29going. Let's cover this topic for a
- 1:23:32minute and then we'll have to wrap up because this is a good
- 1:23:35one. And again, as a parent, forget
- 1:23:36about the kids perspective. As a parent, so much emphasis on
- 1:23:39having to read the Torah and read and learn the Trump.
- 1:23:42The things that we forget in two seconds when it's done, we'd
- 1:23:45breathe them the potato. What are the things that are
- 1:23:48important? Like you're talking about 7th
- 1:23:49grade being so important as a parent, can you teach me?
- 1:23:52Can you give me some guidance as to where should I emphasize my
- 1:23:55my attention to when my kids going through this process?
- 1:23:58It's it's gotten much better when I was a verse where I was
- 1:24:00like you are you were like the Nebel if you didn't lean your
- 1:24:03whole partial and after you and do shuttle and make a see him
- 1:24:06like you were like like are you from you know, like what's wrong
- 1:24:10with you Now? I think parents are much more
- 1:24:12aware of of pushing their kid too hard in this situation,
- 1:24:16because parents are aware they're doing it for themselves.
- 1:24:19Like I agree, a kid will feel amazing if he nails a, a devout
- 1:24:23tell you shuttle leans does left tell you whatever it is, it
- 1:24:27could boost his confidence in his in his self esteem
- 1:24:29tremendously. He gets up there as the Messiah.
- 1:24:31But you know how much pressure and anxiety these kids have at
- 1:24:331312 years old to be Messiah, to say the hydrant, to say his
- 1:24:37shuttle. It's not for every kid.
- 1:24:40It's not for every kid. Take a step back for a second
- 1:24:42and think, am I doing it for myself?
- 1:24:43So all my guests see my kid getting up there and what are
- 1:24:45they going to say about my kid? Or am I doing it for my son?
- 1:24:48Because you're saying he'll learn how to lane a different
- 1:24:51way and he'll be a public speaker.
- 1:24:53I don't know when it maybe it's not for him, but what is he
- 1:24:56going to get out of it? Can he do it?
- 1:24:58Because his whole bar mitzvah, I've, I've went over pshettle
- 1:25:02with, with Barmista Bochum and they were literally petrified.
- 1:25:06And his whole bar mitzvah leading up to star mitzvah is
- 1:25:08just one big party of anxiety of am I going to mess up?
- 1:25:13Am I going to say the right things?
- 1:25:15Going over the pshettle 100 times.
- 1:25:16It's his bar mitzvah. The whole thing that you should
- 1:25:19think of is am I going to mess up my pshettle?
- 1:25:20Am I going to do good at my leaning?
- 1:25:23Do what your son is capable of. I have a good friend who does is
- 1:25:27a master about Curry. He tells parents this is not for
- 1:25:30your kid. He's tone deaf.
- 1:25:33He he's doesn't can't get the concepts.
- 1:25:35Thank you, whoever that is, by the way, on behalf of the entire
- 1:25:37community that sits through with this process.
- 1:25:39He he is like, what are you doing?
- 1:25:41You're breeding a kid who's just going to come to his bar mitzvah
- 1:25:45with tremendous anxiety and you're pushing him too hard.
- 1:25:48He'll be fine. Do a shuttle speak a little bit
- 1:25:51by the by the by the week by the day thing I.
- 1:25:53Have to tell you something a funny story that happened to me.
- 1:25:56It's just a it's a my memory is clicking in and I'm like and
- 1:26:00when my bar mitzvah was at the hotel and and I was very, very
- 1:26:05nervous leading up to the to the Chatel right to the speech.
- 1:26:10Anyways, the speech, the paper was forgotten in the taxi and on
- 1:26:13the way to the breakfast. I didn't have it anxiety through
- 1:26:17the I think that thinking back, that was the first time I had
- 1:26:20anxiety in my life and my dad came to me and he goes, I got
- 1:26:23you. Don't worry about it.
- 1:26:24I'm like, what didn't you got me?
- 1:26:25What are you going to do? He goes, don't worry, just get
- 1:26:28up there. Thank everyone for coming.
- 1:26:31Thank, you know, whatever you got to do, say whatever you're
- 1:26:33comfortable. And I got, I went up there.
- 1:26:35I said thank him. By the way, he made me say it in
- 1:26:36Hebrew. Really.
- 1:26:38And the point is that a certain point he go, he got the whole
- 1:26:41crowd to start saying say, hey, man, they didn't stop until I
- 1:26:44sat down. So I was like planned for him
- 1:26:46not to embarrass me that I didn't remember it.
- 1:26:49But I remember the anxiety leading up to that speech,
- 1:26:52though. And I'm thinking, like you said
- 1:26:53earlier, what is that one thing that a parent should think
- 1:26:55about? This I'm doing for my kid.
- 1:26:57What is that thing? What are we doing for our kids
- 1:26:59for the bar mitzvah? Is it delaying?
- 1:27:00Do we really need that kid to do that?
- 1:27:02Do we really need the kid to have these parties and these
- 1:27:04huge things during the week and Shabbos and the gift And right,
- 1:27:08So sure. No, a bar mitzvah is is.
- 1:27:11It should be a monumental time in a kids life.
- 1:27:14He's becoming a bar mitzvah. He matters.
- 1:27:16He makes a difference to you. This guy does.
- 1:27:17Mitzvahs make a difference and the message gets lost.
- 1:27:20It gets totally lost in in the parties and the thrills and the
- 1:27:23over the top things and all that, like you mentioned, also
- 1:27:26creates A tremendous pressure. So schools try to get on top of
- 1:27:29it and it's not limited. You can't do this.
- 1:27:31You could do this, but parents don't like to be told what they
- 1:27:33could and can't do, especially from the schools.
- 1:27:35You could tell me what I should make for my kids bar mitzvah.
- 1:27:37I could afford it. I want to do this.
- 1:27:39It's this is the old age, you know, Takano weddings.
- 1:27:42I should do make a wedding because this because this guy
- 1:27:44can't afford it. But for kids, you're dealing
- 1:27:47with kids, you're not, you're not dealing with adults.
- 1:27:49So the kid looks at what this guy had in his bar mitzvah and
- 1:27:51he had a light system and he had a three piece band, 5 piece band
- 1:27:55and he had Betty Friedman to come to his bar mitzvah and he
- 1:27:57had all these things and what, what's my bar mitzvah?
- 1:27:59So now like this, this kid is like embarrassed of probably the
- 1:28:02most monumental time in his entire life up until now and
- 1:28:06he's hates it. He's he's embarrassed almost to
- 1:28:08go to his own bar mitzvah because he's only having
- 1:28:11keyboard player and he's only having, you know, sushi and, and
- 1:28:15and 1 meat board and he's not having a full, you know, catered
- 1:28:18event. So it's like it it's it gets
- 1:28:21lost. The message gets lost and the
- 1:28:23parents have to realize the kid gets lost.
- 1:28:25You're doing it for your kid. This is your kids time.
- 1:28:29Focus on the kid, focus on the the nachos that you get from
- 1:28:32him. Focus on the Zetas, the
- 1:28:33grandparents, the legacy that you built.
- 1:28:35Focus on on here is your son who's, who's coming in of age
- 1:28:40and, and don't, don't be so stressed and, and what are the
- 1:28:43flowers going to look like? And then my parents, my mother
- 1:28:45owns a flower shop. So my my father, like we, I grew
- 1:28:49up setting up copas, mojitos and and bride bouquets.
- 1:28:52This is like my life growing up. I feel bad for my wife.
- 1:28:54I never buy her flowers. I said flowers by me is like
- 1:28:56money. Like what buy flowers?
- 1:28:58That's like ridiculous. So so but they would see like
- 1:29:02mothers of the bride crying been days ruined this wedding and the
- 1:29:07dead because the pink of the bride of bouquet wasn't exactly
- 1:29:11what they had on mind and the the dress and this thing broke
- 1:29:13and they like your kids getting married.
- 1:29:16Just enjoy the moment of of walking your kid down the hoopo
- 1:29:20and stop screaming at the caterer because the sponge cake
- 1:29:24came out like this and you thought it was going to be like
- 1:29:25that. Like are you really getting lost
- 1:29:27in these materialistic like small silly things?
- 1:29:32And my father would at even at times pull over like the
- 1:29:35Hassan's father or or or a parent and say you don't worry
- 1:29:38about anything. I'm I'm going to take care of
- 1:29:40you. Please just enjoy your child.
- 1:29:42Simple. Please just be present in this
- 1:29:45simple and stop worrying and stop caring about other things.
- 1:29:48And, and when it regards to to laning and putting all these
- 1:29:51things and pressures on a kid, just do whatever your kids going
- 1:29:54to come out feeling with the most confident and happy and
- 1:29:58self esteem, fulfilledment, happy, real happiness, real.
- 1:30:02He looks in the mirror. You know, the, the, the, the
- 1:30:04famous from Cool runnings that that you know, the guy stands in
- 1:30:07front of the mirror, the bobsledding movie that we we
- 1:30:09grew up with, and he stands for the mirror and he tells himself
- 1:30:12I'm a bad guy, right? Just want to make.
- 1:30:15Sure you describe it though, because I don't remember.
- 1:30:17The story is the guy lost loses confidence and he and he doesn't
- 1:30:20believe he could do it. And his father tells him that he
- 1:30:22has to go to college and he has to, he's not, he's not becoming
- 1:30:24a bobsledder for Jamaica. And his father tells him, no,
- 1:30:27you're nothing. You're going to be nothing in
- 1:30:29your life. And he and he degrades him and
- 1:30:31he makes him feel like nothing. And, and his buddy tells him,
- 1:30:33stand in front of this mirror and to look yourself in the
- 1:30:36mirror and tell yourself how you're the best and the greatest
- 1:30:38and the most amazing person. And he leaves the room and the
- 1:30:41guy looks himself in the mirror and he doesn't believe it
- 1:30:44because his whole life he's been told that he's a loser, he's a
- 1:30:45nothing. And he stands for them and he
- 1:30:47can't do it. And slowly he builds up the
- 1:30:48courage. And at the end, like after five
- 1:30:50times, he's screaming, I'm the best, I'm the greatest, I'm the
- 1:30:53nothing. And he runs out and he goes out
- 1:30:55to his father in the hallway. He was waiting to take him to
- 1:30:58college. And he says, I'm not going
- 1:30:59anywhere. I'm staying right here.
- 1:31:02I'm the I'm the greatest. I'm a bobsledder.
- 1:31:04This is what I'm doing in my life.
- 1:31:05Get out of here. He's screaming his father and
- 1:31:07his father just smacks, he says, but his father realizes it's
- 1:31:11like he's passionate and like he built up that confidence.
- 1:31:13So at the end of our mitzvah, you want a kid to walk home and
- 1:31:16go to sleep that night feeling I'm the greatest.
- 1:31:18I am. I was amazing.
- 1:31:20My parents love me, my herbaeum love me.
- 1:31:22I danced with my javerium. I had an amazing time.
- 1:31:24Not did I messed up the leaning not Oh my gosh, I can't put that
- 1:31:28mumbled that word in in my I still remember the word
- 1:31:31specific. I couldn't say am I permissive
- 1:31:33shuttle specific specific and I remember and this is 25 years
- 1:31:37later, I'm remembering that that that my permissive shuttle.
- 1:31:40I don't remember a word of it. That's the word specific.
- 1:31:42Never put the word specific in your kids permissive shuttle.
- 1:31:45That's what I remember. Wow, so you got to be great.
- 1:31:48Think of the kid. Think of the kid.
- 1:31:50What a message? What?
- 1:31:52What thank you so much for coming today.
- 1:31:54I really appreciate it. I think that what you're doing
- 1:31:57is phenomenal. The concept of, of, in general,
- 1:32:01of being a Rebbe, what it's like to be successful as a Rebbe and
- 1:32:05the concept in general of what it means to, for children to
- 1:32:07have access to camp in the summer and building their
- 1:32:10confidence and, and all that is just been amazing.
- 1:32:14We always like to wrap up with a couple of things.
- 1:32:15So first of all, do you have any questions for me?
- 1:32:21Yeah, sure. I want to know, do most people
- 1:32:23ask you questions? Some people get into questions.
- 1:32:26I don't. Steph, have we gotten a lot of
- 1:32:27questions? Yeah.
- 1:32:28I mean, it happens. Yeah.
- 1:32:31It depends on the bucket. You can ask me anything, by the
- 1:32:34way. No, nothing's nothing.
- 1:32:35How did you? I don't even get to use this, by
- 1:32:37the way. I don't get to use the none of
- 1:32:38your business line. Yeah.
- 1:32:39How did you I know like back in the day, I was still here when
- 1:32:43you're we were in the other office.
- 1:32:45I came a few times. You had like a guitar in his
- 1:32:46office. Like what's it like to to come
- 1:32:48into like a a business that we built from from the beginning.
- 1:32:52You built it into a beautiful thing.
- 1:32:53I see. That's none of your, that's none
- 1:32:54of your business. What's the real question though?
- 1:32:57What's the core question? The real question is, is we've
- 1:32:59talked about a lot about building yeah and building up
- 1:33:01things and, you know, working for things, yeah, hard for
- 1:33:04things, the. The success, I think in prime
- 1:33:06source and to me and, and everything in life, it, it comes
- 1:33:10as a shocker sometimes to people.
- 1:33:11And I'm a big advocate of it. And that's partnerships.
- 1:33:15And to me it's just like a, a marriage and the success of a
- 1:33:19marriage is finding, you know, someone that's, you know, fills
- 1:33:23the gaps, the, the weaknesses, your weaknesses, their strength,
- 1:33:26right. I am a big believer in
- 1:33:29partnerships in business. And when people say like, oh,
- 1:33:33what a partners, you can do it yourself.
- 1:33:34You can make so much more money, you do it.
- 1:33:37I'm just the opposite by me, by me, it's I'd rather bring in
- 1:33:39more people and get more partners to do it better,
- 1:33:43stronger and be more successful. And we'll make it up in the
- 1:33:47volume. And let's not forget that God is
- 1:33:50the one providing. So ultimately, you know, don't
- 1:33:53make it about yourself, make it about others.
- 1:33:56And when you make it about others, that's when you get
- 1:33:58everything that you need. So that is the concept that I
- 1:34:00think that my father instilled in me in general about doing
- 1:34:02things together with others and being there for others and.
- 1:34:05I mean, I see, I know you're involved in the bowling
- 1:34:06tournament, but you do the Lighthouse also.
- 1:34:08And like, do other people reach out to you to to get involved in
- 1:34:11like every There's the run and there's this run.
- 1:34:13Yeah, thank God there are people reach out to you.
- 1:34:15Yes. You know what?
- 1:34:17I'm in the world of people who reach out, you know, for
- 1:34:19charity, but also to create charities and to create
- 1:34:22organizations. I like to tell people that if
- 1:34:24people call out to you, then then you're that messenger.
- 1:34:27There's a reason why they called you and not somebody else.
- 1:34:29And, you know, try to get involved as much as you can.
- 1:34:32Someone just asked me this morning.
- 1:34:34Another shout out to our Shlomo, by the way, shul that helped
- 1:34:37change my life for the better. It's they're, they're going to
- 1:34:40be doing a, a, a status update on their process of their growth
- 1:34:45and their life and so on. They're, they're doing a lot
- 1:34:48that shul and it's a great thing.
- 1:34:50But someone asked me this morning, how are you so involved
- 1:34:55in so many things? Right, that's what I'm asking
- 1:34:57you like it's so many people probably reach out to you.
- 1:35:01Besides the fact that you're just well known, you also have a
- 1:35:03tremendous vibe to you. Like you you're you're a party
- 1:35:06go. You're you're a person who gets
- 1:35:07things done. You love the the noise.
- 1:35:11You get pushed away. Some people shy away from that.
- 1:35:12You're you're you make parties happen.
- 1:35:14So I can't answer you on that and because that's a whole other
- 1:35:17discussion, but the, the the question that I was asked this
- 1:35:19morning, which is similar to what you're saying, is how are
- 1:35:21you involved in so many things? The answer is, I don't have
- 1:35:24Facebook and I don't have Instagram and I don't have
- 1:35:28social media. I don't follow politics, I don't
- 1:35:30follow the news. And that's really the answer.
- 1:35:33And when I'm sitting, you know, quote UN quote, doing nothing,
- 1:35:37you know, some people will do the Duff, you know, some people
- 1:35:40will listen to music and some people will just scroll and
- 1:35:43everyone will do their thing. I'm always thinking, what else
- 1:35:45can I get involved with? And it's what else can I do?
- 1:35:47So if somebody calls me like I have something for you to get
- 1:35:50about, I get excited. Like, what do you got for me?
- 1:35:52But I had to learn over the years how to prioritize things
- 1:35:56and how to say no. And that's been my biggest
- 1:35:58challenge that I think, thank God I've overcome a little over
- 1:36:005-6 years ago and going through probably therapy and working on
- 1:36:04myself and not pleasing everybody.
- 1:36:06And that was always a big challenge.
- 1:36:07But the concept of just like you have time, you want to make it
- 1:36:11useful for you to feel good about yourself, just do for
- 1:36:13others. And so I'm always looking for
- 1:36:15that. Last question for me, where's
- 1:36:17the music is that, is that from your father's side, Your
- 1:36:19mother's? Side it's my mother.
- 1:36:20I grew up with my mother listening to always every air of
- 1:36:23Shabbos, always singing along. She loved little children
- 1:36:25singing, you know that those little voices, you know the So I
- 1:36:28always loved that. I met Rep Shlomo when I was 8
- 1:36:30years old. I actually just sent an e-mail
- 1:36:32to Nashom Kalabach and I wanted to come on the podcast.
- 1:36:36She just came to our Shlomo, actually.
- 1:36:38I might get us, she and I don't. Know it won't because it's
- 1:36:41music, it doesn't interest him, but but you know, so and I and I
- 1:36:46sent her an e-mail. She's like, if you want me to
- 1:36:48come on the podcast, send me an e-mail and explain to me why.
- 1:36:50And I said I met your dad when I was 8 years old and this
- 1:36:53something happened there, something magical happened that
- 1:36:56allowed me to connect the spirituality through the beauty
- 1:36:59of music. And this is not something that I
- 1:37:00made-up. This is Levine.
- 1:37:02This is basically make touch. This is, you know, Jews as a
- 1:37:04whole of prayer of song, Shira Shira.
- 1:37:07And it connected to me. So I think that connection, you
- 1:37:10know, when I was younger, my mother and just, you know, and
- 1:37:14I, I was hanging out with my friends on the beach in Puerto
- 1:37:16Rico 10 years ago and we're sitting around, we're
- 1:37:19schmoozing. We're we ran out of
- 1:37:21conversation. I don't know if that ever
- 1:37:22happens to you. You said it's probably not
- 1:37:24right. We're like, OK, I'm like, one of
- 1:37:27us should learn how to play guitar.
- 1:37:29Like, you know it like. So we went around the room and
- 1:37:30like, OK, you're the only guy that cares enough.
- 1:37:33So I learned how to play guitar. I just started with the E and I
- 1:37:35want to send this message to everybody.
- 1:37:37You're musical and you enjoy music.
- 1:37:38Start with the letter E. Just get to learn the letter E
- 1:37:42and then go to A and then go to D and then go to C and then go
- 1:37:44to G and then, you know, 100 Kalaba songs and you can sing.
- 1:37:47And that's what happened in my journey of music, so thank God.
- 1:37:50You see also just to the point of of every father could have a
- 1:37:53relationship with her son. I see the videos of you and, and
- 1:37:55how much encouragement you give your son and how proud you are
- 1:37:58and his song Kaylee and, and you think that like it's just, I
- 1:38:02maybe you don't think, but this is, it's priceless.
- 1:38:05What I was talking about before has how he sees his father as a,
- 1:38:08as not just an interest, but a loving interest and a cure for
- 1:38:12his success and something that they mutually it could, could,
- 1:38:15could connect with. And he sees that in you and he
- 1:38:18sees how you're giving him that attention.
- 1:38:19He sees how you're showing interest in that and it may seem
- 1:38:22like I'll just getting exposure to the song Kylie and people
- 1:38:25should know who he is and you use a platform to get him.
- 1:38:27It's so much more than that. It's it's I love him, I love my
- 1:38:31son, I love what he's doing. I care about him and and it's a
- 1:38:34beautiful connection through music.
- 1:38:36But anyone could have that through anything.
- 1:38:38I'm going to take a page out of your book and and we'll wrap up
- 1:38:40with this. That's my playing catch with my
- 1:38:42son. There it is.
- 1:38:43So, you know, I connect through music.
- 1:38:45If you connect through volleyball, if you connect
- 1:38:47through bowling. Find something that you're
- 1:38:49passionate about that interests you and connect to your child
- 1:38:51through that. It's amazing.
- 1:38:53That's where quality versus quantity comes to play.
- 1:38:56I'm not a person that's home every night eating dinner with
- 1:38:58my kids, but I am the person that when I see them, they get
- 1:39:01all of me, 100% of me. So thank God.
- 1:39:04I really appreciate you coming here.
- 1:39:05Before I let you go, if you started a podcast tomorrow, who
- 1:39:08would be your first guest? My first guest, probably my
- 1:39:13brother-in-law. Who's that my?
- 1:39:14Brother in law's name is Shelley Lichman.
- 1:39:16He's a nursing home owner in Chicago.
- 1:39:18He works with Freddie Friedman and Nate Stern and these guys.
- 1:39:22Maybe you know these people. You think he'd be willing to
- 1:39:23come on? He started a move.
- 1:39:26I don't know. We want to call it a movement,
- 1:39:27but I don't know if you're involved in the whole thank you,
- 1:39:28Hashem against. Are you joking?
- 1:39:30Can you turn around right there? Thank you Hashem.
- 1:39:32Thank you, Hashem. OK, so he's the antithesis.
- 1:39:35He's the other side, really. He is just Laurentia.
- 1:39:38He is. He he's not shouting, thank you
- 1:39:41Hashem, he's saying just Laurentia.
- 1:39:43He has inside the lining of his jackets JLT you know he.
- 1:39:47And it's not just like Hashem is the most loving let's.
- 1:39:52Get him on. I'm enjoying this already.
- 1:39:54My mind's already working. Very successful.
- 1:39:56Yeah. And he just, he's like, what
- 1:39:58about Terra? You know, you're saying like
- 1:40:00Arsalomo, right? So that's like the spitz.
- 1:40:03Thank you Hashem. You know, and they and I even
- 1:40:05saw like the the status thing that they're going to be doing.
- 1:40:07It's all about just connecting to Hashem.
- 1:40:09Through comes it's through song, through davening, through a
- 1:40:13musical howl. He says OK And then when are you
- 1:40:16opening your like what are you opening your your Gemara?
- 1:40:19And it gets lost. It's like, and people feel that
- 1:40:22no, I'm doing my part. I'm doing my part.
- 1:40:23And and I think the, I think the idea is like you're taking the
- 1:40:28easy street. You know, tire is hard because
- 1:40:30you're not learning to tire because it's hard.
- 1:40:32It's not easy to open it tomorrow.
- 1:40:34It's easy to sit by a comsit with, with Dolby misels and and
- 1:40:38and meat boards and sing. And then you're like, OK, check.
- 1:40:41I connected to Hashem. One might say that it's also
- 1:40:44easy to turn on and press play and listen to Adafiomishir for
- 1:40:4815 minutes and say that you learned.
- 1:40:50No, but I'm saying this one might say that my response to
- 1:40:53that is, and I can't believe I'm about to say this, this is just
- 1:40:55crazy, is that I had a Caruso this morning.
- 1:40:57That's what's crazy. And we were learning condition.
- 1:41:01And that's my, it's my, you know, shout out to Shirley.
- 1:41:04So we learn every Friday morning and I, you know, I don't think
- 1:41:09I'd be learning today if not for Arshlomo.
- 1:41:12I'm going to come out and say it.
- 1:41:14You want to know why I'm saying it?
- 1:41:15Because we learnt this morning. Haisha Nikness, Bishwesha
- 1:41:17Dracham, I can't believe I'm saying this.
- 1:41:19A woman is acquired, not purchased.
- 1:41:21You don't buy a woman. Is it acquired, right.
- 1:41:23Three ways, with money, with a contract and be a, with a
- 1:41:25relationship, with a physical relationship, right.
- 1:41:28So he, what he, the way he described it to me is what I'm
- 1:41:32going to tell you here. It's not all three.
- 1:41:34It's not that you do all three at once in a vacuum.
- 1:41:36It's that you start off with Kassif, then you get to start
- 1:41:39and then finally you do the epitome of the relationship,
- 1:41:41which is the act of, of being with someone.
- 1:41:44That is that process of, of being Kona, a woman.
- 1:41:48I feel the same thing with Kona of Torah.
- 1:41:50If you give to Dhaka, you give charity to someone who's
- 1:41:52learning. It connects you to Torah.
- 1:41:55If you singing for Fila to connect to the God, it's
- 1:41:58connecting you through Torah and then you can that's a Torah.
- 1:42:00It's a beautiful thing. It's not meant for everybody.
- 1:42:02It's the same thing with the Duff that's given with what's
- 1:42:05with Robert Stefanski. You know, it's childish.
- 1:42:09It's for second graders. I'm sorry we're not all on your
- 1:42:12level of learning right now. I'm sorry that I'm on a second
- 1:42:15grade level of learning, but calm down.
- 1:42:17There's a lot of us out there, and I'm sorry that I'm not the
- 1:42:19person that's just going to RIP open a gamar and Start learning
- 1:42:21all day and just learn Torah. It might, I might need to be
- 1:42:25inspired by something else in order to get there, and I'm
- 1:42:27unapologetic for it. Please get him on the phone and
- 1:42:30ask him to come on. I'll.
- 1:42:32Tell him to come on for no. No, right now you got to call
- 1:42:33him and ask. He's in Chicago.
- 1:42:35He's not you. Know does he ever come out here?
- 1:42:37Yeah, all the time. Yeah, Then you can ask him that.
- 1:42:39Listen, you know, Yossi Green taught me that what we did with
- 1:42:43getting him on the podcast is by calling him on the spot and
- 1:42:45putting pressure on him. Really.
- 1:42:46Yeah. So you're putting your phone
- 1:42:48away. I mean, you're not doing it.
- 1:42:49I don't. Think he's going to, but I mean
- 1:42:50I can ask him. Come on.
- 1:42:51OK, I'll ask him. You got to ask him.
- 1:42:53You got to ask him. All you got to do is ask, right?
- 1:42:55Yeah. Listen, he's.
- 1:42:56You miss all the shots you don't take.
- 1:42:57That's Oshi Schwartz line. He told me that he's from a
- 1:43:00supporter. Is that a Jordan line?
- 1:43:02Wayne Gretzky. Thank you.
- 1:43:03Steph let. Me see.
- 1:43:07By the way, we're in the same industry, so we can talk about
- 1:43:09business side of things as well. It would be interesting.
- 1:43:10Yeah, for sure not. But the people see if he comes
- 1:43:14on, they said. They can't.
- 1:43:16Talk. They can't talk right?
- 1:43:17Now I guess that process OK, you'll ask him later.
- 1:43:19It's fine. Can't.
- 1:43:20Talk now. All right, Shelly, We'll be in
- 1:43:21touch later. That's pretty cool actually.
- 1:43:23What is somebody like AI type of thing picked up?
- 1:43:25Yeah, let me see if I connect your call right now, I can.
- 1:43:28Tell him I don't have time right now, OK, You know, So please ask
- 1:43:31him to join us. It would be, it would be
- 1:43:32wonderful. He's in line exactly with what
- 1:43:35we're doing here because I'm in the healthcare industry for
- 1:43:38sure. He's in the industry.
- 1:43:39I love talking about Torah and God and the connections and.
- 1:43:42He he, he would. I don't he's would never
- 1:43:44disagree with that concept that it's a building and it's a
- 1:43:46stepping stone and and it's great, but but get there.
- 1:43:49I mean, don't Just Dance around, you know, your your your
- 1:43:52Schiebel and and and music and whatever and says and but then
- 1:43:56get to the next. Step I get that girl.
- 1:43:57I I get that you want to get to the BIA.
- 1:43:59I get that you want to get to the point of that's.
- 1:44:00Just the Gamar BIA that's just finishing it off.
- 1:44:02I get it. It's it's it's it gets lost.
- 1:44:04It's like the message is also, and I think you has shown the
- 1:44:07the songs. It became like an Ashkafa.
- 1:44:09It used to be like it used to be that you want to be a row of
- 1:44:11some of the people listen to. It took years to to to get the
- 1:44:15authority and get the trust of a killer that wow, this guy's a
- 1:44:19rough. This guy has a day out.
- 1:44:20This guy could say why does it give a right for every guy with
- 1:44:24a phone to become a a motivator in Ashkafa and how to live our
- 1:44:28life. So thank you, Hashem comes out.
- 1:44:30It's not just thank you Hashem. Let's just be some mayor.
- 1:44:32Let's just be it's this is a mahalo.
- 1:44:35This is the way to live. And, and it comes with, with
- 1:44:39childish, you know, all the, all the songs that are very catchy,
- 1:44:41very easy to learn. And then people go around and
- 1:44:44like, this is my way of life is just this thing.
- 1:44:46I'm like, what, what about, you know, what about the tear?
- 1:44:48What about everything else? What about the you want to live
- 1:44:50a life open. You know, that was the song that
- 1:44:52came out, the Ms. Eden song. Like learn how to learn how to
- 1:44:56learn. You want to learn how to learn
- 1:44:57open, open, open a mission Bureau.
- 1:44:59And and what happens also is that people's like Rasheva's
- 1:45:02become, you know, Joey Newcomb, like Joey Newcomb has becomes my
- 1:45:05Rove now, right? And Joey Newcomb becomes a
- 1:45:07sounding board who gives Joey Newcomb a right.
- 1:45:09And I don't mean to sound like Joey was a hailing of the year
- 1:45:12and he's a Rebbe, but like, I mean in the in the right to to,
- 1:45:15you know, I have anything like Balabatam he sees.
- 1:45:18Balabatam, what was your question?
- 1:45:19Who gave you on the right to watch?
- 1:45:20To to voice his his opinion in in, in even in Hashkova or in
- 1:45:27even Tyra. I must have missed something.
- 1:45:29Was there a no? No, no, I'm saying Joe Newcomb
- 1:45:30is like the father of things like the the.
- 1:45:32Yeah, no, with the songs, even the songs are the.
- 1:45:34Songs are not just songs. They're not just album free
- 1:45:37songs, right? They're not the the Bay.
- 1:45:40What's the message of the Bay? Nothing.
- 1:45:42It's a song. It's a horror.
- 1:45:43What's the message of, of the That's not a message, that's a
- 1:45:48sukim. These are messages.
- 1:45:50These are, these are I want to be like Joey, I want to be, oh,
- 1:45:54what's the mess? Oh, there's a message of, of you
- 1:45:56have to be who you really are. And I want to bring a horse to
- 1:45:59if I'm bringing, oh, there's a, there's all like all.
- 1:46:00Now we're putting out songs with messages and, and I say, oh,
- 1:46:03Cher, I'm a millionaire. Like, oh, it's like it's you're
- 1:46:07teaching me now. And me, I'm 38.
- 1:46:09But my kids get sucked into it and without realizing now they
- 1:46:13idolize these entertainers and and 24/6, which is a whole a
- 1:46:18platform of just entertainers who who now my kids like, Oh,
- 1:46:21who's trending most? Who's the thing?
- 1:46:22And instead of we grew up of there were good Dylan.
- 1:46:24There was a crime Kanievski. There was there was Schmal
- 1:46:27Kamnetsky. There was there was good Dylan
- 1:46:29in the world. And these kids are growing up
- 1:46:30and they don't even know who who ribbon Schechter was or or these
- 1:46:34people or who they know. They they know Susha, right?
- 1:46:37That's a travesty. That's terrible.
- 1:46:40I mean, this is what they analyze.
- 1:46:41Why? Because they're sitting on the
- 1:46:4224 six all day and they're looking who's trending, who's
- 1:46:44top trending? Who's this, this is who and who
- 1:46:46and and not terrible. He's not just a singer anymore.
- 1:46:48He's he's he's a Balshita. He's he has a day on what what
- 1:46:52it means to live a life of Tyra and live a life of Yiddish kite.
- 1:46:56Just sing avant free, just sing MBD.
- 1:46:59Just saying the the old singers we grew up with, just saying
- 1:47:02they they didn't come out with cheetahs.
- 1:47:04They didn't come out with a way to live a life a mahalik or or
- 1:47:08think you Hashem movement. They just saying, just saying
- 1:47:11you're not a Rashiba, you're not a Rebbe.
- 1:47:13I'm gonna I said this once, I'll say it again.
- 1:47:16I completely disagree. And the reason why I disagree is
- 1:47:19very simple. It's because the kids in the
- 1:47:22days that you're referring to that used to idolize Rasham and
- 1:47:26Rashaq were the minority. It wasn't the majority.
- 1:47:30It was a minority. Today the majority is at least
- 1:47:33singing thank you Hashem. So we're not recognizing.
- 1:47:36So it's it's it's, it's waking up your neshama.
- 1:47:40It's waking up, it's awakening. You're something inside so that
- 1:47:44you can learn. So that who's that he?
- 1:47:48Thinks that I'm fulfilling my avoidance Hashem by dancing in a
- 1:47:51circle with a bunch of. That's on you as a parent to be
- 1:47:54a mechanic, your child that thank you, Hashem, is
- 1:47:56spiritually awakened, weakening you a little bit so that you can
- 1:47:59go learn, so that you can see, OK, what does the words mean?
- 1:48:01And by the way, to say that let my people go.
- 1:48:03When Mordeheim and David came out with it wasn't thought about
- 1:48:05the words. Come on, everybody thought about
- 1:48:07words back then. Also what it means.
- 1:48:09What's the hash kafa behind it? What is very little hash kafa?
- 1:48:11There wasn't hash kafa. Let My People Go was about this
- 1:48:14this. Isn't an hash kafa either.
- 1:48:16I think that the message is and this you're not the first person
- 1:48:18to bring it up. And I love the topic and the
- 1:48:20debate because I'd rather be arguing about this than arguing
- 1:48:24about what it was 30 years ago, what kids were doing.
- 1:48:26Meaning where were they really? Because minority like I said
- 1:48:28back then was running after the the Rishi Shiva's who is trading
- 1:48:32more cards, Sadiqan cards or baseball cards when we grew up
- 1:48:35in those those days. So thank God, in my opinion,
- 1:48:37this is what's awakening them. So what I'm saying is OK, so you
- 1:48:40know what should happen. Thank you Hashem and JLT should
- 1:48:43make a merger and they should do AJV.
- 1:48:45That's the answer. Beautiful.
- 1:48:47Joey comes out with what's his next song after JLT comes out.
- 1:48:50I made this battle, you know, at, at Bakasham, they're waking
- 1:48:53up to at least. Beautiful.
- 1:48:55You know why? Because Bubba Sally flying on a
- 1:48:57on on a on a carpet, not a horse coming to if I bring in.
- 1:49:00Because that's what it takes in our society today to wake up our
- 1:49:03children. Hanging fruit.
- 1:49:04Yeah, it's it's cheap, it's waking them up.
- 1:49:06You have a better way than do it if it's.
- 1:49:08Skylight, that's what. It is, you know why JLT is going
- 1:49:11to make a name for themselves Because of Thank You Hashem.
- 1:49:14If JLT would have been a movement without Thank You
- 1:49:16Hashem, they would get nowhere in my opinion.
- 1:49:17You don't need jail. You don't need JLT.
- 1:49:19Sure. So now people are going to start
- 1:49:20thinking about JLT. That's my thought, yeah.
- 1:49:22Listen, it helps. That's why you have competitors.
- 1:49:25Thank you Hashem for Husky, thank you Hashem for, you know,
- 1:49:28everybody involved in just talking about how could we get
- 1:49:30our children more involved in in connecting and growing.
- 1:49:34It's all about that. It's all about the connection
- 1:49:36and and and the growth and I love it and I appreciate you
- 1:49:38being here. Thank you to all our subscribers
- 1:49:40to all our comments. As you can tell if you agree,
- 1:49:43you disagree, you like something, you don't like
- 1:49:44something, say it. Let us know, tell us.
- 1:49:46Somebody asks us on, you know, in the comments, like, you know,
- 1:49:50you know why you have to always get celebrities?
- 1:49:52I'm like, you know what? OK, fine.
- 1:49:54You know. So then she's like.
- 1:49:55Just. Remember, she may not be here.
- 1:49:57So we'll get him back. You're not just a Rebbe from
- 1:50:00Muncie. You are, in my opinion, a
- 1:50:01celebrity because I celebrate what you have been doing in your
- 1:50:05life. And you're, you're an
- 1:50:07inspiration to me and to the people around me.
- 1:50:09And you're amazing, amazing energy that when you walk into a
- 1:50:13room, you're making an impact just by being there.
- 1:50:15And really, I want to thank you. Thank you again to all the
- 1:50:18subscribers, to the commenters. Stefan wants me to say something
- 1:50:21but I can't hear what it is. What once again fund?
- 1:50:25We're going to put our link below to the Muncie Cam Fund
- 1:50:27where you can participate in donating.
- 1:50:28Unfortunately, when it comes to organizations and people that
- 1:50:31come on here, more people that need the organization start
- 1:50:33contacting you. Then the people that want to
- 1:50:35donate it. I think it would be great if at
- 1:50:37least a little bit more of the donators than the people that
- 1:50:40need it. So Muncie Cam Fund is the name
- 1:50:41of the organization. Get involved.
- 1:50:44Look out for those kids that you know you might not know that
- 1:50:47they're suffering and that. Would be from Muncie if you're
- 1:50:50listening to this and you know what kids not going to be in Cam
- 1:50:52reach out to me. I'll make the connections.
- 1:50:54I'll call the camp. I'll get someone to get the kid
- 1:50:56into the camp. I'll get the money paid for for
- 1:50:58the camp a kid. Bottom line is our tag line is
- 1:51:01every kid deserves a summer. Every kid deserves a summer.
- 1:51:03He has to be in a social tire Dick surrounded by friends,
- 1:51:06surrounded by things that he loves.
- 1:51:08He has to be in camp for the summer and that's our that's our
- 1:51:10goal. I really appreciate it.
- 1:51:11Thank you very much for being here.
- 1:51:13That's a wrap. Wow.
- 1:51:13OK, beautiful.
