- 0:29Integrate This EdTech podcast. I'm David Berner,
- 0:32joined by Manuel Herrera. Very excited to have
- 0:35Manuel join us, first guest of the conference.
- 0:39Kicking it off. And we've already been talking
- 0:41a bunch, but one of the things that I wanted
- 0:43to ask you first and foremost is how many times
- 0:45have you been at ISTE? I was just talking to
- 0:47somebody. I think this is like my 13th ISTE.
- 0:50Yeah, Atlanta was my first one. And I don't know
- 0:54that it loops back around. to Atlanta, but yeah,
- 0:56like 13. It's a lot. Yeah, that is that is a
- 0:59lot. I think I'm on three and Jeremy's like five,
- 1:01maybe. So yeah. So what what sessions do you
- 1:05have coming up here that you're that you're doing?
- 1:08Well, I've got I've got a session like an actual
- 1:10session in a room with Joe Merrill. We're going
- 1:12to be kind of I forgot what we titled it, but
- 1:14we're going to kind of mix drawing and tech and
- 1:16kind of figure out how we get those two worlds
- 1:17to merge. I'm super excited about that. Kind
- 1:20of get to introduce drawing as a thinking process.
- 1:22And then Joe will come in and show how we take
- 1:24those drawings and tie it to technology. everybody
- 1:27will get to kind of create a pretty cool little
- 1:29project in that session. So that's one of those.
- 1:31That's tomorrow morning, I think at eight o 'clock
- 1:33or 830. And then after that, we're gonna be doing
- 1:36a playground upstairs on the fourth floor. We're
- 1:38in playground B. And that's gonna have a lot
- 1:40of activities for teachers to come and play and
- 1:42listen. We've got some poster sessions in addition
- 1:45to some interactive stations for folks. But my
- 1:48favorite part is gonna be a doodle booth that
- 1:50I'm doing down there. And I'll talk about that
- 1:53here in a second. And then I've got... Not a
- 1:55session, but I'm going to be in the Adobe Aqua
- 1:57booth. I'm really excited about that. I'm going
- 1:59to be kind of showing people how to use Adobe
- 2:00Aqua. It's a drawing app that Adobe just released.
- 2:03So that's going to be really cool. They're going
- 2:05to kind of create some characters and get to
- 2:06take those with them. And yeah, and then I'll
- 2:09do the doodle booth one more time at the creativity
- 2:12playground, which is on the bottom floor, kind
- 2:15of all the way to, I guess, the east side of
- 2:17the building. But I'm excited. I'm excited about
- 2:19the two doodle booths. I'm excited about everything.
- 2:21But the doodle booths are going to be cool. It's
- 2:23amazing that I get to do that considering this
- 2:25is a technology conference, you know, but I am
- 2:27using an iPad, you know, and I am showing. But
- 2:30kind of the purpose of that is just kind of build
- 2:32community with folks. So anybody can stop by
- 2:35and we'll be there for a couple of hours. Anybody
- 2:36stops by, comes and sits with me, we chat, we
- 2:39talk about how many times we've been to ISTE,
- 2:41what do you do, what kind of questions do you
- 2:43have. It's also kind of slash creativity advice.
- 2:46So you come in and you're working on something.
- 2:48Tell me about it. Let's see what we can do. And
- 2:50all while I'm trying to draw your face. But the
- 2:53cool thing is once I'm done drawing it, we're
- 2:56going to print it out. You'll get a color print.
- 2:58I think you're going to get three copies of it.
- 3:00And so one will have sticky double -sided tape.
- 3:03You're going to stick it to your lanyard. We're
- 3:05going to have a large wall that we're going to
- 3:07put the pictures on. So we'll have a mural of
- 3:09everybody's face. And then the last one, you
- 3:13get to kind of trade it with somebody and get
- 3:14to know somebody and learn somebody new. So yeah,
- 3:17that's what we'll do twice. I'm really excited
- 3:19about it. That's cool. Yeah. And we talked to
- 3:21this about this a little bit, but the Doodle
- 3:22booth, Jeremy and I, we'll have to try and come
- 3:24and integrate this one. But actually, what you
- 3:27brought up about the technology and drawing,
- 3:30one of the coolest things about what Manuel does,
- 3:33and I've told you this before, because we've
- 3:35talked in times past, but like the... you have
- 3:39the whole sketchnoting side. And all that is
- 3:41so cool to me, where you're doing all these doodlings
- 3:45and stuff. I think the first time I saw you doing
- 3:47it was on an iPad, and I think it was in Adobe.
- 3:51But some of the cool things that you see at ISTE
- 3:54is like, oh, I didn't even expect that. And so
- 3:58as far as the conference goes, is there anybody
- 4:02that you are looking forward to seeing that you
- 4:04maybe only have seen online? You know man, I
- 4:08don't know it's kind of I enjoy anybody like
- 4:11really to be honest like I either I've got my
- 4:14different friends that I have that I want to
- 4:15see, you know, it's Kim Zajac, there's Dan Ryder,
- 4:18and you know, Stevie Frank, all do incredible
- 4:20creative stuff. So I always enjoy seeing them,
- 4:22even though I've seen them, I still go watch
- 4:24them kind of over and over again. But yeah, it's
- 4:27sometimes it's nice just to pop in a session.
- 4:29This is probably the first ISTE that I've been
- 4:31to that I don't have any other obligations like
- 4:34not as far as like just besides sessions, like
- 4:37I'm not with the school district or I'm not like
- 4:39in a vendor hall. So I'm going to kind of go
- 4:40explore some more. It's been a while since I've
- 4:42had a chance to really kind of you know, weave
- 4:44through the conference sessions and check things
- 4:46out. What would you say to someone who is like
- 4:50going to ISTE for the first time or what do you
- 4:52wish somebody told you the first time you went
- 4:54to ISTE? Make a schedule. Make a schedule. Make
- 4:57a schedule. I'm a professional. I can roam. I'm
- 5:00just playing. Make a schedule. Because if you
- 5:01don't make a schedule and you don't look through
- 5:03things, you're going to miss stuff. You're going
- 5:05to miss stuff. You're going to regret that you
- 5:06didn't do it. I think that's important. I think
- 5:09go in there, click your favorites, make your
- 5:11schedule, and have a plan. You can always deviate
- 5:13from that. But if you're not careful, you could
- 5:15deviate too long. And before you know it, you
- 5:17miss something. But also, I would schedule time
- 5:20to just. mingle with people, to just hang out,
- 5:23go to the bookstore, run into somebody, go into
- 5:26their creative space, come to our playground
- 5:28and network and just get to know people. I think
- 5:32that's the biggest takeaway for me for ISTE,
- 5:34at least every year I come, is just getting to
- 5:36connect with educators. Especially if you're
- 5:38the only person in the district that's super
- 5:40amped about what you do You're gonna be out here
- 5:43on the island come here find everybody else and
- 5:46nerd out with them because that's what you need
- 5:47You know, that's gonna give you a good kickstart
- 5:49to the summer that'll hopefully roll into your
- 5:51the beginning of their school year But yeah schedule
- 5:53schedule stuff and then find time to like network
- 5:56and just talk to people I think that's the biggest
- 5:58thing because Chances are somebody's doing something
- 6:00similar to what you're doing and they can answer
- 6:02questions or they can help you in some way Yeah,
- 6:05that's what that's definitely what I would do
- 6:07and then go to the events that were in the evening,
- 6:09you know Take some time. It's not always, you
- 6:11know late nights There's events that are right
- 6:12after sessions are over so you can kind of go
- 6:15grab dinner and go and mingle a little bit and
- 6:16get home and Start a brush eight o 'clock tomorrow
- 6:19morning. Yeah. Yeah one thing I didn't know my
- 6:21first year was the schedule thing because sometimes
- 6:24you might be you might be planning to go to a
- 6:26session but that your next session is all the
- 6:28way across You don't even you don't even know
- 6:31like but yeah, I think one of the great things
- 6:34about is there is so many different things to
- 6:36go to, right? Like go to a session, but then
- 6:38go to the playground and go to a poster session.
- 6:41There's so many different things to experience
- 6:43that are really awesome. Where can people follow
- 6:45your work, the things that you have going on?
- 6:47Sure. I know you've got manualdraws .com. Yeah,
- 6:50that's probably the kind of a great place to
- 6:51start. Just go to manualdraws .com. Super easy
- 6:55to get to. It just kind of gives you an idea
- 6:57of the work I do and what it looks like. There's
- 6:59a few videos in there if you want to watch. And
- 7:01then also go to my social media. links are there.
- 7:04It's just manual Herrera 33. It's a lot of R's
- 7:06in Herrera. So if you want to just go to manual
- 7:09draws and click on those. And then just you can
- 7:12then see kind of the things that I'm doing. I'll
- 7:14be taking a lot of pictures here and video. But
- 7:16yeah, definitely stop on the website first just
- 7:18to get a bearing of like, you know, what's going
- 7:20on, what I'm doing and what my work is about.
- 7:23Yeah. Yeah. And definitely if we did a podcast
- 7:25interview with you too a while back. And so if
