Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, real quick, guys, Before we get into the show,
- 0:02Speaker 1: I want to give you a warning. My guest's hosts
- 0:05Speaker 1: this week take us in some different directions than usual,
- 0:09Speaker 1: so I want to give you a heads up. This
- 0:10Speaker 1: one's a little less family safe than some of our
- 0:13Speaker 1: usual episodes. I want to give you a fair warning.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Maybe throw some ear muffs on or tune into a
- 0:20Speaker 1: different show. Thanks, Sol, Here we go.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your guide to
- 0:27Speaker 2: the White Tail Woods, presented by First Light, creating proven
- 0:31Speaker 2: versatile hunting apparel for the stand, saddle or blind. First
- 0:36Speaker 2: Light Go farther, stay longer, and now your host, Mark Kenyon.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt Podcast. This week on
- 0:45Speaker 1: the show, roles are being reversed and I am being
- 0:48Speaker 1: put through the what would you do? Gauntlet, breaking down
- 0:51Speaker 1: exactly how I'd handle the most challenging deer hunting scenarios.
- 0:55Speaker 1: The guest's host Tony and Dan Kin dream of All right,
- 1:06Speaker 1: welcome to the wiretong podcast, brought to you by First Light,
- 1:11Speaker 1: and today we have got a very special episode. We
- 1:15Speaker 1: are finishing up our what would you do? Series, but
- 1:19Speaker 1: we're doing it in wildly different fashion. I guess you
- 1:23Speaker 1: could say, because we're gonna flip the script and I
- 1:27Speaker 1: am going to go from the host to instead the guest,
- 1:31Speaker 1: and we will talk about what I would do in
- 1:34Speaker 1: different hypothetical scenarios. And to do that, there was only
- 1:40Speaker 1: two people I could possibly bring on that could carry
- 1:42Speaker 1: that weight, that could handle that burden well, and that
- 1:46Speaker 1: would be my two right hand men here on the
- 1:50Speaker 1: Wiretome Podcast. Over the years, we've got the og Dan Johnson,
- 1:54Speaker 1: mister nine Fingers himself back on the show, and then
- 1:57Speaker 1: we've got Tony Spacener Peterson who is going to be
- 2:00Speaker 1: here to help us as well. So Dan and Tony welcome,
- 2:05Speaker 1: Welcome to the show, and thank you for doing this.
- 2:07Speaker 3: Thanks Mary, appreciate it. Mark. That was a wonderful introduction.
- 2:13Speaker 3: Now I'm really looking forward to this.
- 2:16Speaker 1: I'm just going to say in the outset for everyone listening,
- 2:19Speaker 1: like anything that Tony and Dan bring up, it's likely false.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Any ship they talk is likely unsubstantiated. But I am
- 2:30Speaker 1: prepared to be uh, just battered with with negativity and
- 2:36Speaker 1: bs from these two. So that's uh, that's what's on
- 2:40Speaker 1: the menu. And I will say one thing if we
- 2:43Speaker 1: have time, and I think we'll figure out a way
- 2:45Speaker 1: to have time for this. I also want to end
- 2:47Speaker 1: the show by doing our little goals, Hopes and hit
- 2:50Speaker 1: lists segment that we usually do an episode, talking through
- 2:53Speaker 1: what our plans are for the season, what our personal
- 2:56Speaker 1: goals are. I just want to set ourselves up for
- 2:59Speaker 1: the hunting seasons kicking off here, you know, for all
- 3:01Speaker 1: of us here pretty darn soon. So that'll be how
- 3:03Speaker 1: we wrap it up. But with that said, I'm going
- 3:07Speaker 1: to hand the reins over to you too. I don't
- 3:09Speaker 1: know what kind of plan you have in place. I
- 3:13Speaker 1: give you free reign to do what you want. All
- 3:15Speaker 1: you need to do is ask me hypothetical deer hunting
- 3:18Speaker 1: scenarios and let me answer. And with those guardrails in place,
- 3:22Speaker 1: I now give you my baby and I will let
- 3:25Speaker 1: you take it where you please.
- 3:27Speaker 3: So, Dan, do you want me to kick this one off?
- 3:30Speaker 4: Yeah? But I have to say something real quick before
- 3:33Speaker 4: before you ask the first legit question, and that is
- 3:36Speaker 4: I really hope that this conversation today and the questions
- 3:41Speaker 4: that we are about to ask Mark really help Hunters
- 3:45Speaker 4: this upcoming season. Through Mark's answers, I feel like we're
- 3:49Speaker 4: going to be able to give some really good insight
- 3:52Speaker 4: into helping others attain their goals.
- 3:56Speaker 1: That was way too serious.
- 3:57Speaker 3: Yeah, it was.
- 4:01Speaker 1: It seems like there's a butt coming, Dan.
- 4:04Speaker 3: I think there is a huge butt coming, a huge one.
- 4:10Speaker 4: Like I'll be honest, Mark, you should have never asked
- 4:13Speaker 4: us to do this.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Uh, well made my own bed.
- 4:21Speaker 3: Yeah, buddy, the microphone is yours. So first off, just
- 4:25Speaker 3: to piggyback on that, Dan, this is I do actually
- 4:28Speaker 3: think this is cool, Mark, because normally there's like an
- 4:31Speaker 3: expert hunter that you're asking questions too, and this should
- 4:36Speaker 3: be This is sort of like Steph Curry sitting in
- 4:39Speaker 3: the broadcast, but with calling a game while some random
- 4:42Speaker 3: dudes play basketball on the court.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Honest people, people would love to watch that.
- 4:50Speaker 3: They would honestly, this is This is going to be
- 4:53Speaker 3: the most relatable one ever because you're you're always talking
- 4:56Speaker 3: to people who are so accomplished, and now this is
- 4:59Speaker 3: going to be like, you know, amateur Hour. Actually, Mark,
- 5:04Speaker 3: I do have some serious questions for you. Good and
- 5:08Speaker 3: I want I want to kick one off. Okay, you're ready,
- 5:12Speaker 3: I'm ready. So let's say it's two weeks before the
- 5:16Speaker 3: Michigan opener and you lose all of your sweet easy
- 5:21Speaker 3: spots in southern Michigan, they're gone. They're like Mark, you're out. Whatever.
- 5:26Speaker 3: The only choice you have, for whatever reason is to
- 5:29Speaker 3: go bowhunt public land in the up for the first
- 5:32Speaker 3: few days of the season. What's your first move? First
- 5:36Speaker 3: move right off the bat.
- 5:37Speaker 1: The very first move would be probably to pull up
- 5:42Speaker 1: maps and look at what's up there in the up
- 5:46Speaker 1: and look for clearcuts on public land. I think that'd
- 5:50Speaker 1: be my starting point. I try to you know, everything
- 5:52Speaker 1: is pretty remote up there, so I wouldn't be too
- 5:55Speaker 1: terribly worried about, you know, escaping hunting pressure. There's not
- 5:58Speaker 1: a lot of hunting pressure up there. There's tons and
- 6:00Speaker 1: tons and tons of public land. I think the the
- 6:05Speaker 1: more rare thing would be food, So I'd be looking
- 6:07Speaker 1: for clearcuts or big public land that's next to some ag,
- 6:12Speaker 1: which there's a few little spots where there might be
- 6:14Speaker 1: some ag up there, but yeah, that'd be my number
- 6:17Speaker 1: one thing, like trying to find a place I could
- 6:19Speaker 1: find a rare food source on this big public land,
- 6:22Speaker 1: which would probably be clearcuts. That'd be my first starting
- 6:25Speaker 1: point with my e scouting, and once I found something
- 6:28Speaker 1: like that, then that would dial me in to say, Okay,
- 6:30Speaker 1: that's these would be some starting points that I'll go
- 6:32Speaker 1: and check out.
- 6:33Speaker 3: So okay, but you have a giant area to work with,
- 6:37Speaker 3: do you do anything and go? I might stay here
- 6:40Speaker 3: or I know about this area, because when you say
- 6:43Speaker 3: that that's that that would be almost like step two
- 6:46Speaker 3: for a lot of people. They'd have to be like,
- 6:47Speaker 3: which part am I going to? Would you have an
- 6:49Speaker 3: inclination to be like I'm in a camp or I'm
- 6:51Speaker 3: gonna find a place with a motel first and a
- 6:54Speaker 3: proximity thing.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Yeah, good question. So I would not have any kind
- 7:00Speaker 1: of would camp is what I would most certainly do,
- 7:04Speaker 1: And I would not have a preference as far as region,
- 7:09Speaker 1: because you're right, it is a huge area. I guess
- 7:12Speaker 1: the one thing maybe I would do, I know a
- 7:15Speaker 1: couple people up there. I might ask a couple of
- 7:18Speaker 1: the kind of light contacts I have if there's any
- 7:21Speaker 1: kind of local intel as far as region to focus on.
- 7:24Speaker 1: But honestly, I mean I would probably you know, as
- 7:27Speaker 1: I think to this, I probably if I don't need
- 7:29Speaker 1: to drive thirteen hours, i'd rather not, so I'd probably
- 7:32Speaker 1: look at the more eastern part of the up But
- 7:35Speaker 1: I would you know. Other than that, I would probably
- 7:38Speaker 1: just pull up the maps and just start looking and
- 7:40Speaker 1: just see, like, what region of this large region has
- 7:43Speaker 1: a lot of clear cuts that are in that like
- 7:45Speaker 1: three to five year you know age maybe and just
- 7:48Speaker 1: start circling a bunch and I found a region where
- 7:50Speaker 1: there's a lot of that. I basically what I'm looking
- 7:53Speaker 1: for here is a region of this big woods country
- 7:56Speaker 1: where there's been a lot of cutting in recent years.
- 7:58Speaker 1: And so that might be one hundred square mile area,
- 8:01Speaker 1: that might be a ten square mile area. I don't know,
- 8:04Speaker 1: But that would just be that first thing. And once
- 8:06Speaker 1: I have that first thing, then I would start, you know,
- 8:09Speaker 1: looking more seriously, Okay, like what's where do I want
- 8:11Speaker 1: to camp? Where are the places that I think deserve
- 8:14Speaker 1: some more time? And then I might start talking to locals.
- 8:17Speaker 1: I might you know, you know, in that kind of situation,
- 8:20Speaker 1: there might be some folks at a local sporting good
- 8:22Speaker 1: store or you know, maybe I would further drill into
- 8:25Speaker 1: my personal network and try to see, like, hey, do
- 8:27Speaker 1: you know anything about this area, just to build a
- 8:29Speaker 1: little bit of you know, a little bit of an
- 8:32Speaker 1: understanding of what I'm getting myself into up there. But
- 8:36Speaker 1: that would be you know step step one and a half.
- 8:41Speaker 4: Dan, all right, mark your main This one focuses on
- 8:45Speaker 4: your main Michigan hunting property that you've been hunting for
- 8:49Speaker 4: several years. And Uh, through our conversation that we've had,
- 8:54Speaker 4: through all of the podcasts that we've done, it sounds
- 8:57Speaker 4: like you attack it early right to try to catch
- 9:00Speaker 4: that that bed to food pattern before it really changes,
- 9:05Speaker 4: and then you go through a pretty long period of
- 9:10Speaker 4: laying off of it until the rut starts to hit.
- 9:13Speaker 4: So my question is, is you go through that period,
- 9:19Speaker 4: that early season period chasing some maybe some of the
- 9:21Speaker 4: deer on your property, but then through trail camera data,
- 9:25Speaker 4: an absolute giant shows up that you have no history with.
- 9:30Speaker 4: You've already put in the you know, you've already done
- 9:33Speaker 4: the pressure for the initial early season hunts. What are
- 9:36Speaker 4: your what's your next move on this once in a
- 9:39Speaker 4: lifetime buck.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Yeah, so you're right. I usually hit the first like
- 9:44Speaker 1: three days of the season in that local spot pretty hard.
- 9:50Speaker 1: That's when I say hard, I mean I'd hunt some
- 9:53Speaker 1: relatively invasive locations, but I know there's like a high
- 9:56Speaker 1: odds chance of seeing one of my target bucks those
- 9:59Speaker 1: first three days. But if an new buck shows up
- 10:00Speaker 1: after that, typically I've got a set of trial cameras
- 10:05Speaker 1: out that cover the places that I know historically are
- 10:09Speaker 1: are kind of concentrations or funnels of deer activity that'll
- 10:13Speaker 1: pick up anything going on. So I probably would not
- 10:16Speaker 1: move cameras from those core historical locations. But if I
- 10:21Speaker 1: found out that this new buck showed up on the
- 10:23Speaker 1: south side, let's say I would probably pick a day
- 10:28Speaker 1: and you know, add more cameras to that area. First off,
- 10:32Speaker 1: So if I'm zeroing in on the south side, let's
- 10:34Speaker 1: hypothetically say, you know, right now I've got one camera
- 10:37Speaker 1: on the south side, I might add a couple more
- 10:40Speaker 1: in different you know, exit points out of that general
- 10:43Speaker 1: betting area. This this main spot that we're talking about,
- 10:47Speaker 1: you know, has basically two betting two betting regions in it,
- 10:52Speaker 1: and so I kind of know there's either deer on
- 10:54Speaker 1: the north side or on the south side. They're coming
- 10:56Speaker 1: from one of these zones. So you know, whichever zone
- 10:58Speaker 1: he's in, I would add add some cameras there. That's
- 11:01Speaker 1: gonna give me a little bit of that uh you know,
- 11:04Speaker 1: photo intel. And then you know we're talking about being
- 11:08Speaker 1: in middle you know, or early October. Still I don't
- 11:11Speaker 1: know anything about him. I would probably do some like
- 11:14Speaker 1: observation sits would be the next thing I would do.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Either there's a couple spots where I can just glass,
- 11:19Speaker 1: like from the road, so I would do some glassing
- 11:22Speaker 1: for sure, no doubt about that. But then you know,
- 11:26Speaker 1: if we've got you know, some hunts or some days
- 11:29Speaker 1: where the weather's not great, but I'm still trying to
- 11:31Speaker 1: learn a little bit, that would That would be when
- 11:33Speaker 1: I would go hunt a tree where I can get
- 11:35Speaker 1: into one of these fence rows pretty far from the
- 11:37Speaker 1: bedding area still, but I can get a view. And
- 11:41Speaker 1: then you know, if hopefully between those three things then
- 11:45Speaker 1: observation sit are two, sitting on the hills and glassing
- 11:48Speaker 1: a couple of times, and then trail camp pictures, hopefully
- 11:50Speaker 1: I'll kind of figure out, all right, you know, he's
- 11:52Speaker 1: definitely in the south side. He definitely likes to do
- 11:54Speaker 1: a couple of things. Maybe that gives me some information.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Then I'm just gonna wait for good conditions to take
- 12:01Speaker 1: a strike at them. I used to do what you mentioned,
- 12:06Speaker 1: which was I would hunt the first few days and
- 12:08Speaker 1: then I basically not touch this farm again. Till the
- 12:11Speaker 1: end of October or November. I've gotten more and more
- 12:15Speaker 1: confident in taking you know, some strikes in the middle
- 12:18Speaker 1: of October. Now, I've just seen enough times to know
- 12:21Speaker 1: that like these bucks, you know, they still move in
- 12:25Speaker 1: October no matter what, Right, So there are opportunities. There's
- 12:29Speaker 1: days when you can go in there and get a
- 12:31Speaker 1: crack at a mature buck, even in southern Michigan on
- 12:34Speaker 1: October thirteenth. So if we get a good front that
- 12:37Speaker 1: comes through, those will be days that I will absolutely
- 12:41Speaker 1: go in there and hunt close to that bedroom. So
- 12:45Speaker 1: these betting areas, they're both pretty big. I mean when
- 12:49Speaker 1: I say pretty big, we're talking like a five to
- 12:51Speaker 1: ten acre area for either one of those. I kind
- 12:55Speaker 1: of know now after you know, hunting here for a
- 12:57Speaker 1: decade plus those main exit and entry those exit routes
- 13:03Speaker 1: out of the betting year typically are. So I would
- 13:05Speaker 1: have a good starting point at least for you know,
- 13:07Speaker 1: where I would go in for a hanging hunt, and
- 13:11Speaker 1: that would be you know that that'd be the beginning
- 13:14Speaker 1: that that kind of intel collection. And then once the
- 13:18Speaker 1: good weather's there, So I'm looking for that you know,
- 13:20Speaker 1: ten to twenty degree temperature drop kind of front that
- 13:23Speaker 1: comes through, whether that's October twelfth, or if that doesn't
- 13:26Speaker 1: happen till the twenty fourth, then I'll wait till the
- 13:29Speaker 1: twenty fourth or whatever it is. But I'm not gonna
- 13:31Speaker 1: hunt tight to that betting area for a deer like
- 13:34Speaker 1: that until you have the good weather, because there are,
- 13:37Speaker 1: like there are a lot of different hunters hunting all
- 13:39Speaker 1: around here, and so you know, if I hunt a
- 13:44Speaker 1: bunch on the credit days when it would be really
- 13:46Speaker 1: hard to see this deer, you know, he'll very quickly.
- 13:50Speaker 1: What I've seen with these deer in the past, very quickly,
- 13:53Speaker 1: you know, they'll spend less time on my property in
- 13:55Speaker 1: the daylight and more time on the neighbors. And there's
- 13:58Speaker 1: some good hunters on the neighbors now, and they'll take
- 13:59Speaker 1: it avantage of that. So I'm happy to hunt in
- 14:02Speaker 1: the middle of October now, But it's got to be
- 14:04Speaker 1: the right conditions in this situation, and this farm, the
- 14:07Speaker 1: way it sets up, does not set up very well
- 14:09Speaker 1: for morning hunts really anytime of the year. So I
- 14:13Speaker 1: probably would not do a morning hunt until later in October,
- 14:17Speaker 1: even though I know you could pull it off if
- 14:18Speaker 1: had better access. I just don't have a good way
- 14:21Speaker 1: to get into these bedrooms without having to take a
- 14:25Speaker 1: pretty significant risk in covering open terrain. So what I
- 14:30Speaker 1: do now when the you know, late October does arrive
- 14:33Speaker 1: and I start hunting mornings here, I've started using an
- 14:36Speaker 1: e bike and that I feel like I can get
- 14:38Speaker 1: away with a little bit more, but that's still, you know,
- 14:43Speaker 1: it's still some kind of impact. So I would wait
- 14:45Speaker 1: until you know, the twenty fifth through the thirty first,
- 14:48Speaker 1: somewhere in that ballpark would be when I would start,
- 14:50Speaker 1: you know, crashing into the bedroom and hunting back in there,
- 14:54Speaker 1: trying to get ahead of them and catch them coming back.
- 14:56Speaker 1: And there's a few places that I have prepared for
- 14:58Speaker 1: those types of hunts that I would then, depending on
- 15:02Speaker 1: what I've learned so far, hunt those places too.
- 15:05Speaker 3: Well.
- 15:06Speaker 4: Here here's I want to ask you another question to like,
- 15:10Speaker 4: another question is this is this is again a once
- 15:14Speaker 4: in a lifetime deer. And it sounds to me that
- 15:18Speaker 4: even when it's a once in a lifetime deer and
- 15:21Speaker 4: you're not familiar with him and he randomly shows up
- 15:24Speaker 4: on trail camera, that you're still going to be conservative
- 15:27Speaker 4: to your approach in this farm at this farm relatively.
- 15:30Speaker 1: I mean, I'm just I'm not gonna be I'm not
- 15:32Speaker 1: gonna go stupid like just because there's a two hundred
- 15:35Speaker 1: inch deer or something. That doesn't mean I'm gonna throw
- 15:37Speaker 1: away everything I've learned, you know. And so what I've
- 15:40Speaker 1: learned is, you know, it's not worth again. This is
- 15:44Speaker 1: like I've got like thirty five acres of huntable ground
- 15:48Speaker 1: to work with here. The rest is like fields, maybe
- 15:51Speaker 1: forty acres of hunible ground. So it's like I've got
- 15:54Speaker 1: two precious little bedding areas that I have to like nurture,
- 15:58Speaker 1: you know, no matter what. And so if this big
- 16:00Speaker 1: old buck has showed up there, you could very easily
- 16:04Speaker 1: mess it up and he's off to some you know,
- 16:06Speaker 1: even if he just bumps out of that a little bit,
- 16:08Speaker 1: you know, I can't hunt him. So I'm not going
- 16:12Speaker 1: to do something crazy.
- 16:13Speaker 3: But I know.
- 16:14Speaker 1: What I do know, though, is if you are careful
- 16:16Speaker 1: with this property and you don't muck it up, these
- 16:19Speaker 1: deer can survive and stay around. Like there's enough good
- 16:23Speaker 1: cover that if I don't push deer off this property,
- 16:26Speaker 1: I'll have opportunities at them throughout the entire hunting season. Often,
- 16:29Speaker 1: like I've killed a lot of deer in that post
- 16:31Speaker 1: gun season late season time here. This historically really really
- 16:36Speaker 1: hard for people in Michigan, and I've uniquely been able
- 16:38Speaker 1: to keep deer around. But it's because I'm pretty darn
- 16:42Speaker 1: targeted with how and when I strike, and I feel
- 16:46Speaker 1: confident that you know, that would be the way to go,
- 16:49Speaker 1: even if this is a once in a lifetime deer.
- 16:51Speaker 1: I'm not going to go just plunge into his bedding
- 16:54Speaker 1: area and hunting there on hot days every night in
- 16:56Speaker 1: October and screw it all up just because he's big
- 16:59Speaker 1: and it's eccet fair enough.
- 17:02Speaker 3: I get you where you needed to go, Dan, Yes, sir,
- 17:06Speaker 3: did make you Tony. You need a little more caffeine.
- 17:09Speaker 1: I feel like Tony's judgy. You're judging me over there
- 17:11Speaker 1: for some reason. What the hell is your problem?
- 17:14Speaker 3: No, buddy, there's a very safe Mark Kenyan answer. I
- 17:18Speaker 3: was hoping you were going to say you'd abandon everything
- 17:20Speaker 3: and just Bond's eye in there and go wild card
- 17:23Speaker 3: and kill that sucker from the ground. But you know
- 17:26Speaker 3: it's not your style. It's okay, buddy, I have one
- 17:29Speaker 3: kind of a playoff of that. So you kind of
- 17:33Speaker 3: kind of laid out how cautious you are and in
- 17:36Speaker 3: protecting those little betting areas and stuff. So it's October
- 17:40Speaker 3: tenth and you just know, you know, the lull is
- 17:44Speaker 3: in full swing in Michigan. Your cameras are dead, You're
- 17:48Speaker 3: not seeing any deer in the fields, and you're just like,
- 17:51Speaker 3: I'm going to take off a little time, earn some
- 17:52Speaker 3: brownie points at home, play this safe, like you just said.
- 17:55Speaker 3: But all of a sudden, somebody puts a gun to
- 17:57Speaker 3: your head and they say you've got to kill a
- 18:00Speaker 3: three and a half year old plus before the week
- 18:02Speaker 3: is out.
- 18:03Speaker 1: What do you do on that same property?
- 18:06Speaker 3: Yep?
- 18:07Speaker 1: Yeah, So in that case, I would, you know, go
- 18:11Speaker 1: in for an evening hunt between I would get as
- 18:15Speaker 1: tight to one of those betting areas as I possibly could.
- 18:18Speaker 1: So what I would do is, you know, looking at
- 18:21Speaker 1: the wind direction, see when I could get a wind
- 18:24Speaker 1: direction that would kind of cut across the south side
- 18:27Speaker 1: of that north betting ara or across the north side
- 18:30Speaker 1: of the South betting area. Hopefully it's going to be westerly,
- 18:33Speaker 1: and I would head in, you know, based on what
- 18:36Speaker 1: camera or observation Debt has told me hopefully I will
- 18:39Speaker 1: tell you which food source they're kind of triggering on
- 18:41Speaker 1: a little bit more, or which one has got you know,
- 18:44Speaker 1: a three and a half year old or a four
- 18:45Speaker 1: and a half year old that's that's coming through that
- 18:47Speaker 1: area a little bit more often, even if it's after daylight,
- 18:51Speaker 1: I would pick whichever one seems to have the best
- 18:54Speaker 1: chance of, you know, catching one moving that direction. So
- 18:58Speaker 1: let's just say it's the north betting for a change
- 19:00Speaker 1: of pace. And so this north betting area, there's there's
- 19:04Speaker 1: a big crop field in the middle between these two
- 19:06Speaker 1: betting areas, and this year it's corn. And then I've
- 19:09Speaker 1: got a little tiny food plot up on that north
- 19:11Speaker 1: side of the cornfield, and then the betting area is there.
- 19:14Speaker 1: And so in this case, I would slip in there
- 19:16Speaker 1: with a west wind that would blow my wind right
- 19:19Speaker 1: in between those two betting areas and crossed. I'd get
- 19:22Speaker 1: in there, and then I would slip in hopefully it's
- 19:24Speaker 1: a windy day or something so I can get in close,
- 19:29Speaker 1: and I would come up and get you know, there's
- 19:32Speaker 1: actually some spots where I just know like deer bed
- 19:36Speaker 1: in this let's say three ish acre thicket of like
- 19:42Speaker 1: autumolive and buckthorn and tall grass and stuff. But I
- 19:48Speaker 1: have got a pretty clear understanding of how they navigate
- 19:50Speaker 1: through this terrain to get to one of those two
- 19:52Speaker 1: food sources. And so I would just get really really close,
- 19:56Speaker 1: I mean within eyesight of the betting are for sure,
- 19:59Speaker 1: and there with my saddle and get up there on
- 20:02Speaker 1: one of those main travel quarters. So there's like a
- 20:04Speaker 1: transition area that goes from that, like three acre betting thicket,
- 20:09Speaker 1: and there's, like I said, a couple of different ways
- 20:12Speaker 1: that could go. So based on the wind, I'd pick
- 20:13Speaker 1: whichever way the wind would work. I'm not you know,
- 20:16Speaker 1: I don't need these these bucks, especially a three year
- 20:21Speaker 1: old buck, will come to these food sources not depending
- 20:24Speaker 1: on wind. Like they don't need a wind in their
- 20:26Speaker 1: face to go down there. So I would pick a
- 20:28Speaker 1: wind that's safer for me, because I still believe that
- 20:32Speaker 1: these three year olds will move down there, and yeah,
- 20:35Speaker 1: get up in a saddle, and yeah if I if
- 20:39Speaker 1: I can't wait for the good weather, I'm just gonna
- 20:41Speaker 1: get in there and take as many stabs as I can. Probably,
- 20:45Speaker 1: you know, would pick whichever betting area to start with
- 20:48Speaker 1: based on observation. Or trail cameras like I mentioned. But
- 20:51Speaker 1: if I hunt that first one the first two nights
- 20:53Speaker 1: and don't see anything, it's not happening. I'll bounce down
- 20:55Speaker 1: to the southern betting area and try the same thing
- 20:57Speaker 1: down there, and hopefully one those I will see something
- 21:01Speaker 1: or get a piece of intel that helps me kind
- 21:03Speaker 1: of narrow down, you know, if I need to tweak
- 21:06Speaker 1: my setup a little bit. But I think I think
- 21:11Speaker 1: you could certainly do that August tenth through the fifteenth
- 21:14Speaker 1: without a doubt, even if the weather's bad. If the
- 21:16Speaker 1: weather's great, if I do get a front that comes
- 21:19Speaker 1: through during that week, then even better, and then I
- 21:22Speaker 1: would probably go in for a morning hunt too if
- 21:24Speaker 1: I get a front, so I would do evenings on
- 21:27Speaker 1: the lousy days. And if we've got a front that
- 21:30Speaker 1: pushes in let's say a few days into that hunt,
- 21:33Speaker 1: then I will probably you know, set up in a
- 21:35Speaker 1: location the previous evening that would work for the following
- 21:39Speaker 1: morning hunt too, and hope to catch this buck or
- 21:41Speaker 1: one of these bucks coming back into that bedroom. But
- 21:46Speaker 1: this is it's you know, there's not a big mass impact.
- 21:49Speaker 1: There are some oaks, but that's never been the kind
- 21:51Speaker 1: of place where you can really count on an oak
- 21:54Speaker 1: tree or two really pulling them. So it's it's it's
- 21:56Speaker 1: really going to be knowing like they're coming to, you know,
- 22:00Speaker 1: one of these two crop fields and they're exiting either
- 22:03Speaker 1: gonna go to the neighbors or they're gonna go my way.
- 22:05Speaker 1: And it's a little bit of a crapshoot on that front.
- 22:08Speaker 1: So just don't get boogered, like, don't let them onto
- 22:11Speaker 1: you as much as possible and get tight to that bedroom.
- 22:14Speaker 1: And I think you know i'd get one to come.
- 22:17Speaker 3: Through, so you you would consider hunting mornings.
- 22:19Speaker 1: Then yeah, but only when I if I have that
- 22:22Speaker 1: front during that time period. So if it's October fifteenth,
- 22:26Speaker 1: there is a.
- 22:26Speaker 3: Place onto your head. You gotta blow your brains out
- 22:31Speaker 3: right on those books on the bookshelf behind you. If
- 22:33Speaker 3: you don't do this and you're gonna maybe hunt mornings.
- 22:37Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't let me take that back. If we
- 22:40Speaker 1: get to the end of the week and it hasn't
- 22:43Speaker 1: worked out for me, then I would, you know, if
- 22:45Speaker 1: it's the last two or three days, then then yeah,
- 22:48Speaker 1: I guess there's a gun to my head and I'll
- 22:50Speaker 1: take more risks. Even then but I want at least
- 22:53Speaker 1: the first like three nights unfed up. I want those first,
- 22:57Speaker 1: like three really good nights before I mess it up again.
- 23:00Speaker 1: Like another tricky thing about this property is this very
- 23:03Speaker 1: high deer density, like really high deer density. So getting
- 23:07Speaker 1: in and out unscathed and having a hunt whether you
- 23:09Speaker 1: don't booker things up is you know, more the exception
- 23:15Speaker 1: than the rule. So you just have to Like, I know,
- 23:17Speaker 1: you guys like to give me a hard time about
- 23:18Speaker 1: being conservative on this one, but uh but if you're not,
- 23:22Speaker 1: you're gonna you're gonna mess it up. And I found that,
- 23:26Speaker 1: you know, if I found the good balancing act. I
- 23:28Speaker 1: think between aggressive and the right kind of ways at
- 23:31Speaker 1: the right times, but not so much that the fifty
- 23:34Speaker 1: deer that I run around know what's going on right away.
- 23:38Speaker 4: Dan, there you go, I mean, and answer my question.
- 23:43Speaker 4: I got what I wanted out of him.
- 23:44Speaker 3: I got.
- 23:45Speaker 4: I got to answer that I wanted out of my question. No, No,
- 23:50Speaker 4: out of the where all this came from? Right, Like, No,
- 23:54Speaker 4: I know he he's obviously approaching it, and I can understand.
- 24:00Speaker 4: I mean, I think the limited access alone on that piece, right,
- 24:04Speaker 4: it's only from one direction, right, you can only access
- 24:07Speaker 4: that farm and uh, correct me if I'm wrong, you
- 24:11Speaker 4: have to go through a majority of egg or flat
- 24:15Speaker 4: ground with no cover even to just get into it.
- 24:18Speaker 3: Right, So the morning hunts would.
- 24:20Speaker 4: Would potentially be difficult to go into knowing that deer
- 24:25Speaker 4: are edge creatures and they're probably out in those fields
- 24:28Speaker 4: and food plots before the uh you know, in the dark,
- 24:33Speaker 4: So it would be it would be tough.
- 24:36Speaker 3: So but let me ask you this though, Mark, because
- 24:38Speaker 3: you said it was corn this year, doesn't that change
- 24:41Speaker 3: your access options in the morning or not? Good question, Tony,
- 24:45Speaker 3: Thanks buddy.
- 24:47Speaker 1: If the corn is standing, it does make access, you know,
- 24:50Speaker 1: easier in that there's not big, wide open fields, but
- 24:53Speaker 1: there's still going to be a pile of deer out
- 24:55Speaker 1: on the edges of the fields and feeding all around.
- 24:57Speaker 1: Like even on what years in this excuse and state corn,
- 25:02Speaker 1: there's gonna be deer blowing without a doubt if I
- 25:04Speaker 1: were going in there for a morning hunt, and I know,
- 25:06Speaker 1: like in November, with a standing corn, even whether I
- 25:09Speaker 1: walk through the middle of the field or if I
- 25:11Speaker 1: follow the fence row, you just can't get through this
- 25:14Speaker 1: area without deer knowing what's up. So I'm just careful
- 25:20Speaker 1: about when I do that, and the risk or the
- 25:23Speaker 1: reward has to outweigh the risk for me to do that.
- 25:26Speaker 1: Knowing that every one of those is like a high
- 25:28Speaker 1: impact situation, I have the I have a What I
- 25:31Speaker 1: uniquely have is because this area is close enough to
- 25:34Speaker 1: where I live that I can get a friend or
- 25:37Speaker 1: family member to help me on the evenings. I get
- 25:40Speaker 1: I get out of jail free card for the evening
- 25:42Speaker 1: hunts because as often as possible, I'll have someone drive
- 25:46Speaker 1: out with the ATV or the truck or something and
- 25:48Speaker 1: pick me up for those evening hunts on this property.
- 25:52Speaker 1: And so I can get away with a lot more
- 25:54Speaker 1: because my evening access, despite that tough situation we just
- 25:57Speaker 1: talked about, my evening exit is much slower impact. So
- 26:01Speaker 1: knowing that I lean that direction.
- 26:06Speaker 3: All right, buddy, Dan Tony, I think it's your turn
- 26:09Speaker 3: to ask a question. Oh you do all right? I
- 26:12Speaker 3: think I got a good one here for you. Mark. So, Mark,
- 26:16Speaker 3: you're hunting Ohio on Halloween. It is it's go time, right,
- 26:22Speaker 3: Weather's perfect sign everywhere, and you're set up in just
- 26:26Speaker 3: a banging spot and you hear a grunt close by
- 26:30Speaker 3: and You're like, oh, this is gonna be good, big
- 26:32Speaker 3: deep grunt, and soon one hundred and eighty inch non
- 26:37Speaker 3: typical chases a dobe beneath your stand, right, I mean mega, giant, right, mega?
- 26:42Speaker 3: He stops at twenty yards. He stops at twenty yards.
- 26:46Speaker 3: You totally whiff right over his back. But he doesn't
- 26:50Speaker 3: know what's going on. He's all keyed up, right, So
- 26:52Speaker 3: you get another arrow knocked up with again. This happens
- 26:57Speaker 3: until you're a quivering mess, you're ont arrows, and he
- 27:01Speaker 3: trots away unscathed. Do you tell anyone? Or do you
- 27:05Speaker 3: take that to your grave?
- 27:11Speaker 1: Oh?
- 27:11Speaker 3: Man?
- 27:12Speaker 1: Yeah, great, great scenario here to plant into my mind
- 27:15Speaker 1: heading to the season. Oh, I sure as hell hope
- 27:20Speaker 1: that never happens. I have never let me think this through.
- 27:26Speaker 1: I've never gotten more than one shot a deer that
- 27:28Speaker 1: I've missed. I've missed deer, but I've never gotten a
- 27:30Speaker 1: second shot and missed again. So knock on wood, don't.
- 27:35Speaker 1: I don't have this in my quiver of experiences yet,
- 27:38Speaker 1: but I probably would tell. I have told about every
- 27:44Speaker 1: single one of my misses except for one in the
- 27:47Speaker 1: last fifteen years, So there's only one miss that I
- 27:49Speaker 1: kept to myself in the last fifteen years, and I
- 27:53Speaker 1: think I ended up talking about that like a couple
- 27:55Speaker 1: of years ago. So it's all out there, and I
- 27:57Speaker 1: guess people have seen and heard about all my lumps.
- 28:01Speaker 1: So to this point, if I were to miss a
- 28:02Speaker 1: one eighty a bunch of times, that probably wouldn't make
- 28:04Speaker 1: people feel any worse about me. They already know I'm
- 28:06Speaker 1: a knucklehead and I make a lot of mistakes, So
- 28:11Speaker 1: I would probably tell the story. I would just really
- 28:14Speaker 1: hope I would get redemption in the in the near future.
- 28:16Speaker 1: It would hurt me to tell the story, and I'd
- 28:19Speaker 1: be really upset about it in the following minutes, but
- 28:24Speaker 1: I would.
- 28:25Speaker 3: Okay, I have to. You would you would put you'd
- 28:28Speaker 3: come out with it, you'd you'd be honest about it,
- 28:31Speaker 3: all right. I think let's let's take that scenario. Let's
- 28:33Speaker 3: say you empty that quiver on that one eighty, miss
- 28:35Speaker 3: him every time you climb down from your tree after
- 28:38Speaker 3: he runs away, and you're picking up your arrows and
- 28:41Speaker 3: a two hundred and seven inch typical runs in this
- 28:45Speaker 3: This is the hottest dough in Michigan or Ohio.
- 28:48Speaker 1: Sorry, that's a heck of a property too.
- 28:50Speaker 3: Yeah, so you've got a handful of arrows, and you know,
- 28:52Speaker 3: and that buck is just chasing that dough around you
- 28:54Speaker 3: in circles. It's like a freaking cartoon out there. And
- 28:58Speaker 3: and you empty that quiver again again. Yeah, okay, you
- 29:03Speaker 3: miss him again with all your arrows, and on your
- 29:06Speaker 3: last shot you just hail marry him, and you miss him,
- 29:09Speaker 3: but you hit a little tiny spike in the antlers
- 29:12Speaker 3: behind him. Everybody runs off and you've you've peed yourself
- 29:17Speaker 3: a little bit. The whole thing is is real rough.
- 29:20Speaker 3: Now do you tell this story? Do you not your grave?
- 29:25Speaker 1: I think I quit deer hunting, and it's it's suicide
- 29:28Speaker 1: watch for a few weeks after that point. All right,
- 29:31Speaker 1: all right that would be the end. Wow, I love it. Well,
- 29:38Speaker 1: I don't like the negativity here, but.
- 29:40Speaker 4: Well, hey, I tell you what, Mark, if you liked
- 29:43Speaker 4: that question, you're gonna love this one. You spent and
- 30:01Speaker 4: right you get a call from Steve Ranella. Steve Vanella
- 30:04Speaker 4: says Mark, once in a lifetime Alaska hunting opportunity with
- 30:08Speaker 4: your bow. We're gonna go do it, and we're going
- 30:10Speaker 4: to go do it big. But you got to be
- 30:13Speaker 4: gone for potentially two to three weeks. All right, that's
- 30:18Speaker 4: a long time being away from the family. All right,
- 30:21Speaker 4: So you get back, let's say right around the twentieth
- 30:26Speaker 4: of September, you go back to you know, Dad, You
- 30:30Speaker 4: go back to hunting Michigan. You know, the opener comes.
- 30:34Speaker 4: You start hunting Michigan, maybe some other places. And it's
- 30:38Speaker 4: mid October, maybe a little later in October, and you're
- 30:43Speaker 4: in good news. Your wife tells you that you're expecting
- 30:47Speaker 4: a third child. So and so, oh man, everything's everything's
- 30:54Speaker 4: going great, everything's going great. You're excited. So one night
- 30:58Speaker 4: you're out with your boy, your wife's in the house,
- 31:00Speaker 4: you're out with your voice, and you're shooting in the backyard,
- 31:04Speaker 4: getting your reps in for this season, and all of
- 31:06Speaker 4: a sudden it pops into your head. Man, the dates
- 31:11Speaker 4: just don't add up.
- 31:12Speaker 1: I was in.
- 31:14Speaker 3: I was in Alaska. Okay, wait up.
- 31:21Speaker 4: And so so, all of a sudden, all of a sudden,
- 31:24Speaker 4: in your brain, you're thinking about this, and you acquire
- 31:28Speaker 4: target panic in the middle of the season. And that's
- 31:31Speaker 4: the question if you if you were to acquire target
- 31:35Speaker 4: panic in the middle of the season, what steps are
- 31:38Speaker 4: you taking to get.
- 31:39Speaker 1: Out of that.
- 31:40Speaker 3: Oh gosh, never mind that your wife's carrying somebody else's baby.
- 31:46Speaker 3: How do you deal with the target panic.
- 31:49Speaker 1: Yeah, we got a lot of things to address.
- 31:52Speaker 3: Here, but let's get the important stuff talked about.
- 31:58Speaker 1: Gotta get that target bucks though, So in this scenario,
- 32:04Speaker 1: I think the biggest thing I would do if I
- 32:08Speaker 1: pick up a bad case of target panic in the
- 32:10Speaker 1: middle of the season, would you know a number one
- 32:15Speaker 1: get back to the basics. So like just get back
- 32:18Speaker 1: to like probably doing like blind bail type shooting, just
- 32:21Speaker 1: feeling comfortable getting a surprise release. Again, I've had some
- 32:25Speaker 1: times where I'll realize, like I'm holding my release wrong,
- 32:30Speaker 1: or you know, with an index finger release, you know
- 32:32Speaker 1: where you grip onto the trigger, if it's tighter or looser,
- 32:36Speaker 1: you can kind of loosen that up. And they'll be
- 32:38Speaker 1: different things like little weird form things and stuff that
- 32:41Speaker 1: can throw off your form and your surprise release. So
- 32:44Speaker 1: I just make sure, like make sure there's nothing like
- 32:46Speaker 1: that that has somehow slipped into my process that's triggered
- 32:50Speaker 1: my issue. But as soon as like I've got that
- 32:53Speaker 1: figured out, and I maybe would have a friend come
- 32:56Speaker 1: over just someone like watch me. Just make sure that
- 32:58Speaker 1: not some weird subconscious thing that's going on that I'm
- 33:00Speaker 1: just you know, I'm so stressed. I'm so focused on
- 33:03Speaker 1: these outside things that I'm just like, you know, not
- 33:06Speaker 1: paying attention to. As long as that's checked out and
- 33:08Speaker 1: not happening, would go back to just like getting a
- 33:11Speaker 1: bunch of reps in at close range and just feel
- 33:14Speaker 1: really comfortable at shooting, and then I would just try
- 33:17Speaker 1: to get a kill or two under my belt. I
- 33:19Speaker 1: would go to dough hunting. I would start doll hunting,
- 33:21Speaker 1: and I'd have a very low maximum range. I would
- 33:25Speaker 1: tell myself, all right, man, twenty yards and in and
- 33:28Speaker 1: I'd go somewhere where there's a lot of dos, a
- 33:30Speaker 1: high target opportunity, and just try to kill some doughs
- 33:34Speaker 1: and get that kind of out of the way, like
- 33:36Speaker 1: just get the monkey off my back again in a
- 33:38Speaker 1: situation that's like really hard not to mess up, hopefully,
- 33:42Speaker 1: and that would be that'd be step. I think that'd
- 33:44Speaker 1: be the first thing I do. So I would go back,
- 33:46Speaker 1: just make sure that my form and like everything's okay.
- 33:49Speaker 1: I'd shoot a ton at close range and just try
- 33:51Speaker 1: to rebuild confidence, and then I would really get the
- 33:54Speaker 1: confidence again by getting in there in the field and
- 33:56Speaker 1: killing some does. And I think every time you do
- 33:59Speaker 1: that that takes, you know, several layers of whatever that
- 34:02Speaker 1: target panic issue could be off the table and then
- 34:06Speaker 1: we would have some serious talks my wife and I.
- 34:11Speaker 3: Good answer after the season.
- 34:15Speaker 1: After the shooting, after the shooting, yep.
- 34:20Speaker 4: Feel good about that, Dan, that's I mean, yeah, I
- 34:23Speaker 4: mean I think that acquiring target panic in the middle
- 34:26Speaker 4: of the season would absolutely suck.
- 34:28Speaker 1: The would Yeah, and the other thing too.
- 34:32Speaker 3: Yeah, both of them? Yeah, pretty rough? Yeah? Really?
- 34:36Speaker 1: Yeah, like going, So this is basically like a This
- 34:40Speaker 1: is basically a series of worst case scenarios. Usually I
- 34:43Speaker 1: give my guests like challenging. You guys are giving worst
- 34:46Speaker 1: case scenarios, which is great. I'm up for the challenge.
- 34:49Speaker 4: You have to be able to overcome, right, Yes, got
- 34:53Speaker 4: to be able to overcome man.
- 34:55Speaker 3: But on the on a serious note, have you had
- 34:57Speaker 3: a vasectomy yet? Mark?
- 35:00Speaker 1: Yeah? Man, I did.
- 35:02Speaker 4: Well.
- 35:02Speaker 3: We don't have to worry about like pregnancy scares.
- 35:05Speaker 1: Right, hopefully I hear they go bad though, like you
- 35:10Speaker 1: can have a mishap still, So fingers crossed.
- 35:15Speaker 3: Not only that, but also his wife's pregnant, so it
- 35:17Speaker 3: doesn't matter anyway, she got it some exactly can't. You
- 35:20Speaker 3: can't get double pregnant, so I mean, it depends how
- 35:26Speaker 3: you look at it, because my wife got double pregnant once.
- 35:29Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a good point. You're still dealing with the
- 35:32Speaker 1: after effects now.
- 35:34Speaker 3: Yeah, I didn't abandon my family. I guess still raising
- 35:38Speaker 3: my kids. Mark.
- 35:40Speaker 1: Well, yeah, I'm glad for you.
- 35:43Speaker 3: Yeah, all right, what's next? All right, Well, I'm gonna
- 35:45Speaker 3: skip a couple because I have one that sort of
- 35:47Speaker 3: plays off of what Dan just asks you. Oh jeez,
- 35:50Speaker 3: all right, well you know marital issues. Oh all right, Marcus,
- 35:57Speaker 3: It's November fifth, and you've been getting after it all season.
- 36:02Speaker 3: I mean, you've been pushing it right to the edge
- 36:05Speaker 3: with the whole family thing, and you know, after you
- 36:07Speaker 3: trout fished all summer long and ignored your family and everything,
- 36:10Speaker 3: like it's really it's really adding up at home. So
- 36:14Speaker 3: you come home one day November fifth, and missus Kenyon
- 36:19Speaker 3: it's obviously pretty pissed at you, and she says things
- 36:23Speaker 3: like you're an absentee father who only cares about deer.
- 36:26Speaker 3: I never really loved you, like, you know, pretty harsh stuff, right,
- 36:30Speaker 3: So you decide all right, half a week, I have
- 36:33Speaker 3: a rut cation, but I probably shouldn't do all days
- 36:36Speaker 3: sits because she's kind of ticked at you. You can
- 36:40Speaker 3: either only hunt mornings or evenings. What are you choosing why?
- 36:46Speaker 3: Great question?
- 36:47Speaker 1: Great question. Yeah, I'm going with mornings for that time period,
- 36:56Speaker 1: and hopefully I can push it into the middle of
- 36:58Speaker 1: the day a little bit. Give me that you know,
- 37:02Speaker 1: first six hours of the day or whatever it is.
- 37:04Speaker 1: I think there's a couple of things going for you.
- 37:06Speaker 1: I do think just during the rut time period, you
- 37:09Speaker 1: have a longer duration of deer being on their feet.
- 37:14Speaker 1: Now that's not always the case, like sometimes the deer
- 37:17Speaker 1: on their feet early in the afternoon. But I would
- 37:19Speaker 1: just say, if I had to average, go pick the
- 37:21Speaker 1: average time period, I'd say, like, maybe you've got even
- 37:24Speaker 1: on a good weather day, you know, there might be
- 37:26Speaker 1: bucks moving all morning into the middle of the day,
- 37:29Speaker 1: but then almost always there's a little bit of a
- 37:31Speaker 1: lull in that, like I don't know, you know, two
- 37:33Speaker 1: o'clock to four o'clock or somewhere in that ballpark. So
- 37:36Speaker 1: if you did just the evening hunts, all you have
- 37:38Speaker 1: is that, you know, two to five thirty or two
- 37:41Speaker 1: to six or three to six or whatever it is.
- 37:43Speaker 1: And then if you throw in warm weather, then it's
- 37:46Speaker 1: even worse. So if you've got a warm weather stretch
- 37:49Speaker 1: during November, your mornings are likely still cool, so that's
- 37:52Speaker 1: always gonna be the coolest part of the day. I
- 37:54Speaker 1: think you've got those bucks on their feet more. They're
- 37:57Speaker 1: checking all those betting areas, they're doing their cruising thing.
- 38:03Speaker 1: I just think those mornings are dynamite. And then add
- 38:05Speaker 1: on top of that the likely like you can't go
- 38:08Speaker 1: wrong with the weather in the mornings at least during
- 38:10Speaker 1: that time period. Almost that would without a doubt be
- 38:13Speaker 1: the decision I'd make for sure.
- 38:15Speaker 3: Huh yep, Yeah, I think you know. I was thinking
- 38:19Speaker 3: about this when I wrote it, because I I would
- 38:22Speaker 3: you know, probably five years ago I would have one
- 38:25Speaker 3: said mornings without question. And I think about it a
- 38:28Speaker 3: little more because I have some pretty good rut hunts
- 38:31Speaker 3: in the afternoon in the evening. But I still think
- 38:33Speaker 3: I lean toward your answer, like I think that you
- 38:35Speaker 3: just got to take that sunrise to noon shift if
- 38:38Speaker 3: you get it.
- 38:40Speaker 1: Yeah, and yeah, I mean evenings could be great too.
- 38:42Speaker 1: I'd like to both.
- 38:44Speaker 3: But uh, you screw that up. Yeah, that's why she's
- 38:48Speaker 3: pregnant with another man's baby.
- 38:50Speaker 4: Fat fact. Yeah, yeah, dude, that that question is a
- 38:58Speaker 4: no brainer for me. Like I don't even need to
- 39:01Speaker 4: think about it.
- 39:02Speaker 1: It's mornings, yeah, can't be all right?
- 39:06Speaker 3: Let me ask both of you guys then, would would
- 39:08Speaker 3: your answer change at all if you couldn't hunt private
- 39:12Speaker 3: land and you had to hunt public no, knowing that
- 39:17Speaker 3: everybody's going to be thinking the same way as you,
- 39:19Speaker 3: like I gotta get out there in the mornings, does
- 39:21Speaker 3: it change at all? No?
- 39:25Speaker 1: Really, yeah, because I think like, yeah, everyone's everyone knows
- 39:29Speaker 1: they want to go out in the mornings, But I
- 39:31Speaker 1: think that doesn't mean they're not going to hunt the
- 39:33Speaker 1: evenings too, Like everyone's gonna want to hunt the evenings
- 39:35Speaker 1: as well. And it might you might say that there's
- 39:37Speaker 1: a little bit more pressure in the evenings on public
- 39:41Speaker 1: land even at that time period, I think, because there'll
- 39:43Speaker 1: be a few people that maybe can't I mean, I
- 39:45Speaker 1: don't know, but there's some folks that can get out
- 39:47Speaker 1: for an evening hunt, you know, after work, that can't
- 39:50Speaker 1: hunt that morning stretch because they have to go to work.
- 39:53Speaker 1: So during that weekday period, you might have actually a
- 39:56Speaker 1: little bit less in the morning, despite the fact conditions
- 39:59Speaker 1: are better. I just think, you know, the only thing
- 40:03Speaker 1: that you'd have going for you with the evening hunt
- 40:04Speaker 1: is you could like scout your way in, you know,
- 40:06Speaker 1: to hunt places in the middle of the day, and
- 40:09Speaker 1: then you just have to do that in the post
- 40:11Speaker 1: hunt situation. Now, in this situation, so I can hunt
- 40:13Speaker 1: the mornings and then if I need to relocate, if
- 40:15Speaker 1: I need to do something new, that's gonna happen after
- 40:18Speaker 1: the hunt, and I'll set up for the next morning.
- 40:21Speaker 3: Can I'm gonna piggyback off of that for a second?
- 40:24Speaker 3: One consideration I would have. This is totally situational, totally anecdotal,
- 40:30Speaker 3: but I feel like people are way more likely to
- 40:33Speaker 3: walk in on you in the morning than in the evening,
- 40:37Speaker 3: So I always look at it and listen. I'll hunt
- 40:39Speaker 3: the mornings every time too. But on public land it
- 40:42Speaker 3: feels like if people show up in the dark, they're
- 40:45Speaker 3: just going in. But you know, if you show up
- 40:47Speaker 3: at like two o'clock in the afternoon or whatever, there's
- 40:49Speaker 3: a guy parked at this trailhead or this spot, you
- 40:52Speaker 3: might go on to the next spot. So I think
- 40:54Speaker 3: there's a little advantage there.
- 40:56Speaker 1: Yeah, that's an interesting point. I mean I could see that.
- 41:00Speaker 3: I got Dan. All right, next question mark Kenyon.
- 41:04Speaker 4: Okay, rut vacation really, any vacation really, any time of year.
- 41:11Speaker 4: You can you can throw in whatever you want here,
- 41:15Speaker 4: but it's public land. It's an out of state hunt.
- 41:18Speaker 3: All right.
- 41:19Speaker 4: You've done your your e scouting. Maybe you even went
- 41:22Speaker 4: there and you found some old sign. Maybe you had
- 41:24Speaker 4: the opportunity to do some boots on the ground scouting.
- 41:28Speaker 4: You find the sign, maybe you have a good idea
- 41:31Speaker 4: of where you're going to go. You get there and
- 41:35Speaker 4: you start to hunt, and you're not seeing the movement
- 41:39Speaker 4: that you want. You're not seeing the quality of deer
- 41:42Speaker 4: that you want, so forth and so on. When do
- 41:45Speaker 4: you abandon Plan A and go.
- 41:48Speaker 3: To Plan B.
- 41:51Speaker 1: Yeah, so relatively quickly, definitely after day two. You know,
- 41:57Speaker 1: I think day one, i'd, you know, go into somewhere
- 42:00Speaker 1: where I've have some intel on, whether it be through
- 42:03Speaker 1: scouting or whatever. I'm going into a spot for a
- 42:06Speaker 1: reason day one. If I see like nothing that first day,
- 42:10Speaker 1: I'll push in further on day two, get more aggressive
- 42:13Speaker 1: with wherever whatever the feature is that I'm hunting or
- 42:15Speaker 1: the betting area or the foods or whatever it is,
- 42:17Speaker 1: I'll push in more on day two. If I still
- 42:20Speaker 1: by day two, you know, if coming up blank, if
- 42:24Speaker 1: there's an opportunity to get even more, I'll just basically
- 42:28Speaker 1: get more and more and more aggressive through day one
- 42:31Speaker 1: through three, let's say. And if still at that point,
- 42:36Speaker 1: like I'm not seeing any strong options, like there's no
- 42:38Speaker 1: way to push in further, there's no other back door
- 42:40Speaker 1: to check, then yeah. I mean, if it's a week
- 42:43Speaker 1: long trip, you know, by day three and a half
- 42:46Speaker 1: or something, I'm probably really seriously considering, you know, is
- 42:49Speaker 1: there a brand new place I need to be checking out,
- 42:51Speaker 1: like what's going on here that I don't know about?
- 42:53Speaker 1: And or do I just need to very quickly start
- 42:56Speaker 1: checking off other options. So even by you know, let's
- 42:59Speaker 1: say I hunt those first two days, you know that
- 43:03Speaker 1: third day I might go and drive around morning number
- 43:06Speaker 1: three and go scout from the road a couple of spots,
- 43:10Speaker 1: or if not that, then definitely middle of the day
- 43:12Speaker 1: I'm out walking other places and figuring out what other
- 43:15Speaker 1: options do I have. I had this exact scenario last
- 43:19Speaker 1: year in Idaho, and you know, I thought going into it.
- 43:22Speaker 1: We had a great game plan, and you know, Day
- 43:24Speaker 1: one went to one of those spots that I thought
- 43:26Speaker 1: should be a kill spot and there was crickets. And
- 43:28Speaker 1: then so day two I pushed in further crickets. I
- 43:32Speaker 1: think day three I made one really like hard, hard pushing,
- 43:36Speaker 1: and when that didn't come up, then I was like, okay, well,
- 43:38Speaker 1: now you know I went through Plan A. My Plan
- 43:43Speaker 1: B was to push further push through that plan. See
- 43:45Speaker 1: it was even deeper now, like I've seen everything this
- 43:48Speaker 1: thing has got to offer, and it's not offering anything
- 43:51Speaker 1: right now because if it seemed to be hunting pressure
- 43:53Speaker 1: that was there before me. So yeah, then we just
- 43:55Speaker 1: started scouting brand new places and just doing a shotgun
- 43:59Speaker 1: approach and trying to figure out, like where is there
- 44:01Speaker 1: a concentration of deer that have not been pressured? And
- 44:04Speaker 1: so I walked a ton of properties we observed scouted
- 44:08Speaker 1: into hunting locations, and it was just about trying to
- 44:10Speaker 1: figure anything out. I don't want to waste time in
- 44:14Speaker 1: a no man's land. So I've gotten to the point
- 44:16Speaker 1: where I will very quickly burn through things if there's
- 44:19Speaker 1: not anything that's giving me the warm fuzzies.
- 44:23Speaker 4: Okay, now, Dan, Yeah, I like it, But I have
- 44:27Speaker 4: a kind of a side question that goes along with it.
- 44:29Speaker 3: Just popped into my head.
- 44:32Speaker 4: You are you've you've invested a lot of time into
- 44:35Speaker 4: this public peace. All right, We're coming up on the
- 44:41Speaker 4: end of your vacation. You saw a buck, right and
- 44:45Speaker 4: we have a scenario now where it's a shooter, it's
- 44:48Speaker 4: a target animal. You've made an adjustment. Maybe you took
- 44:52Speaker 4: your mobile setup in the dark, you moved it to
- 44:55Speaker 4: where you saw this deer, and and it's all prepped
- 45:00Speaker 4: ready to go, high confidence level for the morning. You
- 45:04Speaker 4: get to the parking area, you start to walk and
- 45:09Speaker 4: there is another hunter between where you are and where
- 45:15Speaker 4: you need to go. Are you walking through their setup
- 45:18Speaker 4: to get to your setup?
- 45:24Speaker 1: I would think about the impact of that person on
- 45:30Speaker 1: the deer I'm trying to kill. So if I think
- 45:33Speaker 1: that that buck will not do the thing I wanted
- 45:37Speaker 1: him to do because of where this hunter is, that
- 45:41Speaker 1: might cause me to go on a different location. Like
- 45:45Speaker 1: if it's if there's one way he could get into
- 45:47Speaker 1: his bedroom, and now this hunter is right there and
- 45:50Speaker 1: his wind's going to blow to that deer. I just
- 45:52Speaker 1: don't see any way this could work out, then I
- 45:54Speaker 1: will probably just turn around and go somewhere else entirely
- 45:58Speaker 1: if I don't think that this hunter will mess it up,
- 46:02Speaker 1: If I think this buck is going to approach from
- 46:04Speaker 1: some different direction and the wind won't be blown there,
- 46:07Speaker 1: or if if I'm deep enough in there that it
- 46:09Speaker 1: won't be impacting it, no matter what, I would continue
- 46:13Speaker 1: on to where I'm going to hunt. I would try
- 46:15Speaker 1: to skirt him, like, I would give him as much
- 46:17Speaker 1: courtesy space as I possibly could so he doesn't feel
- 46:20Speaker 1: like I'm walking, you know, right through his stuff and
- 46:22Speaker 1: messing up his hunt. So I'd probably back out a
- 46:25Speaker 1: little bit so I'm out of site or whatever, and
- 46:27Speaker 1: then make an end around to get to where I
- 46:30Speaker 1: want to hunt and hopefully, you know, preserve his mourning,
- 46:35Speaker 1: but still put myself in a position I don't think
- 46:37Speaker 1: that having someone there likely would mess up the entire thing.
- 46:43Speaker 1: And if I feel super confident, it's my last day
- 46:45Speaker 1: and this is really all I have to work with,
- 46:46Speaker 1: and it's basically like take a flyer with zero intel,
- 46:50Speaker 1: or hunt the place I'm really confident in and hope
- 46:52Speaker 1: that the buck just doesn't come through that fifteen degree window.
- 46:55Speaker 1: That this other hunter is impacting. I would do that,
- 46:59Speaker 1: I think, unless like I just know, like, man, he
- 47:02Speaker 1: absolutely bugger this whole thing up, because like he's sitting
- 47:05Speaker 1: over the only creek crossing where that buck was likely
- 47:07Speaker 1: to come through, and his wind's blown right back to
- 47:09Speaker 1: where I was sitting, where the blind would be, and
- 47:11Speaker 1: or where the betting area would be, and that kind
- 47:14Speaker 1: of thing.
- 47:15Speaker 3: All right, fair enough, that's a good answer. All right, buddy, thanks,
- 47:20Speaker 3: I have one more serious one for you, Mark, so
- 47:25Speaker 3: I need you to breakle up here, all right. I actually,
- 47:29Speaker 3: technically I have three more serious ones. You're on stand
- 47:32Speaker 3: October twenty fifth, Big buck state, Illinois, Iowa, somewhere it's
- 47:39Speaker 3: you know, it's one of those states, Kansas, and you
- 47:42Speaker 3: see a stud one hundred and sixty inches just awesome deer.
- 47:46Speaker 3: He's kind of cruising through, checking stuff, making scrapes whatever.
- 47:49Speaker 3: But he's You're, like his trajectory, he's not coming in,
- 47:52Speaker 3: so you got to do something about it. So you
- 47:54Speaker 3: grun at him, no response, barely picks his head up.
- 47:58Speaker 3: Then you're like, I gotta I gotta ramp this up.
- 48:00Speaker 3: Snort wheeze at him, and he stops, looks around doesn't
- 48:04Speaker 3: look at you, but looks around, and then he turns
- 48:07Speaker 3: around and sort of does that trot walk away where
- 48:10Speaker 3: it's kind of I'm spooked, but I'm not, you know,
- 48:14Speaker 3: full on spook, like you know, halfway he's getting out
- 48:17Speaker 3: of there. But it's like, all right, what's going on here?
- 48:20Speaker 3: You're not sure what happened the snortweeze, did it whatever?
- 48:24Speaker 3: Do you keep hunting that deer in the next couple
- 48:26Speaker 3: of days, or do you go, you know what, he
- 48:28Speaker 3: spooked just enough where I'm gonna give that area a
- 48:31Speaker 3: little rest and go somewhere else.
- 48:33Speaker 1: Interesting scenario. I would still hunt him. I think that
- 48:37Speaker 1: in a especially like I'm hunting out of state. This
- 48:40Speaker 1: isn't like my local turf that I know super well.
- 48:43Speaker 1: I'm likely on a shorter time period. Man. Getting eyes
- 48:47Speaker 1: on a buck of that, you know, getting eyes on
- 48:49Speaker 1: a target buck is such a huge piece of data,
- 48:53Speaker 1: like you can't afford not to take advantage of that.
- 48:56Speaker 1: So I would definitely still hunt that buck. I would
- 48:59Speaker 1: not likely hunting from the same tree. I would probably
- 49:02Speaker 1: make an adjustment based on what I saw, so hopefully
- 49:05Speaker 1: I learned something about where he's coming from, about where
- 49:08Speaker 1: he's going. Hopefully I can make some assumptions about what
- 49:11Speaker 1: he's doing. So hopefully I learned, like, Okay, I bet
- 49:14Speaker 1: you he's coming from this betting area, and I bet
- 49:16Speaker 1: you he's going to that food source. And so if
- 49:19Speaker 1: I was trying to call to him, he must have
- 49:22Speaker 1: been out of range. Right, So now I'm gonna say,
- 49:24Speaker 1: all right, well, I'm just gonna move into range of
- 49:26Speaker 1: where his path of travel what I think it is,
- 49:29Speaker 1: and if it's you know, October twenty fifth, he's still
- 49:32Speaker 1: on his you know, core kind of bed to feed
- 49:34Speaker 1: tight pattern, but he's now probably just wanting to check
- 49:37Speaker 1: out some does a little bit more. So I'm gonna
- 49:40Speaker 1: get right up in there, probably a little bit closer
- 49:42Speaker 1: to where I think he was betted, and hope to
- 49:45Speaker 1: intercept him coming out of that betting area. And just
- 49:49Speaker 1: you know, I'm going to be far enough away from
- 49:51Speaker 1: where I was hunting the previous day that I'm not
- 49:53Speaker 1: going to be worried about him, you know, skirting that
- 49:55Speaker 1: because if he skirts that area, he will likely stay
- 49:58Speaker 1: closer to where I am now. And that's that's what
- 50:01Speaker 1: I would do, right on, all.
- 50:05Speaker 4: Right, So I have two more questions, all right. One
- 50:09Speaker 4: of them is a curveball question. But and it it
- 50:14Speaker 4: kind of play well, they kind of play into each other,
- 50:16Speaker 4: but they kind of don't as well. So I'll give
- 50:19Speaker 4: you the serious one.
- 50:21Speaker 3: First.
- 50:22Speaker 4: You decide to go on an out of state hunt,
- 50:24Speaker 4: let's say out west, and we're talking in the car,
- 50:28Speaker 4: nineteen hours whatever. We're hunting elk, mule deer, some different species.
- 50:34Speaker 4: A lot of time and travel invested into this hunt,
- 50:37Speaker 4: and dollars, okay, and so. But you're going out there
- 50:42Speaker 4: with a partner. Your partner is a weak link, all right.
- 50:47Speaker 4: He's slow, he's fat, he's preventing you from getting to
- 50:52Speaker 4: where you need to go. He's unenthusiastic if he doesn't
- 50:57Speaker 4: take scent seriously, like he's just he's ruining this experience
- 51:01Speaker 4: for you.
- 51:02Speaker 1: Is this you?
- 51:04Speaker 3: It could have been? It could be could be.
- 51:09Speaker 1: How long to do the question?
- 51:12Speaker 4: How long until you leave his ass at the truck
- 51:15Speaker 4: and you go make moves on your own.
- 51:20Speaker 1: I'm not gonna leave him at the truck, but uh,
- 51:27Speaker 1: but I will, you know, if ever he's like, I
- 51:30Speaker 1: certainly will not stop for him. So I've had situations
- 51:34Speaker 1: where I've been on Western hunts with buddies and they're like,
- 51:36Speaker 1: you know, you know it's raining or snowy, or you know,
- 51:39Speaker 1: it's not gonna be very good. I'm just gonna stay
- 51:41Speaker 1: back at camp. That's like I'm leaving him in camp
- 51:44Speaker 1: for surely, I'm not gonna let him pull me down
- 51:46Speaker 1: with him. And then if I'm out like hiking around
- 51:50Speaker 1: the mountains chasing elk or deer, whatever it is, and
- 51:53Speaker 1: if there's a situation like you gotta get you gotta
- 51:56Speaker 1: get up the mountain to get ahead of the elk
- 51:57Speaker 1: or something, and if the buddy just can't keep up
- 52:00Speaker 1: and it's day four or five or whatever, you know,
- 52:03Speaker 1: at some point, I'll probably be like, hey, man, do
- 52:05Speaker 1: you mind if I just take a swing at this
- 52:06Speaker 1: guy and I'll meet you back here, you know, in
- 52:08Speaker 1: a couple hours, and and hopefully that'd be you know,
- 52:11Speaker 1: the situation. If the guy's like at risk of dying
- 52:14Speaker 1: or something and like he's like struggling that kind of way,
- 52:17Speaker 1: I'm not gonna leave someone who I don't think can survive.
- 52:20Speaker 1: But assuming it's just like good but assuming, but assuming
- 52:29Speaker 1: like he can handle his own for a little bit,
- 52:31Speaker 1: I'll just be like, hey, I think it just makes
- 52:33Speaker 1: more sense was to split up. I'll hunt high, you
- 52:36Speaker 1: can hunt low, and uh, you know, will make it work.
- 52:39Speaker 1: I'm not going to ruin a friendship over it, but
- 52:43Speaker 1: I think you can navigate that situation with tact and
- 52:46Speaker 1: uh and still be able to hunt hard without you know,
- 52:51Speaker 1: messing up the whole thing.
- 52:53Speaker 3: Good. I really really like how you had to explain
- 52:56Speaker 3: that would be the dying friend to maybe a company
- 53:02Speaker 3: him with you.
- 53:02Speaker 1: I got to make sure him very clear with you too.
- 53:04Speaker 3: You're a man of character, Kenyon.
- 53:07Speaker 1: I like to set a very low bar for myself,
- 53:09Speaker 1: but then really lead into it.
- 53:11Speaker 3: There you go. Listen, if he's circling the drain, I'm
- 53:15Speaker 3: gonna stick around.
- 53:16Speaker 1: Yeah, you can saint me.
- 53:19Speaker 4: Now, all right, but I'm but I'm sure as ship
- 53:22Speaker 4: not gonna call a helicopter evac because it will ruin
- 53:26Speaker 4: the hunt.
- 53:27Speaker 1: Yeah, you're not gonna do that.
- 53:31Speaker 3: He's still breathing.
- 53:31Speaker 1: But but but what I hike with him back to
- 53:35Speaker 1: the truck and go to town to pick up a
- 53:37Speaker 1: new tent so he can stay dry. Yes, I would
- 53:39Speaker 1: do that for.
- 53:40Speaker 4: Him, yep, and waste the whole afternoon hunt with closing
- 53:44Speaker 4: the dryer, putting closing the.
- 53:45Speaker 1: Dryer made for one of the best stories ever.
- 53:50Speaker 3: Yep, yeah, I love it. I'll never forget it me neither.
- 53:55Speaker 3: All Right, Dan, you feel good about that? I felt.
- 53:57Speaker 3: I feel real good about it. All right, Well, I
- 53:59Speaker 3: kind of. I kind of have a somewhat of a
- 54:02Speaker 3: parallel scenario for you there, all right, Kenya. So Mark
- 54:09Speaker 3: Zuckerberg oh wakes up one day and he's pissed for
- 54:14Speaker 3: some reason. Maybe it's because of the haircut, maybe it's because
- 54:17Speaker 3: he's a little too reptilian. Anyway, grumpy Zuck decides he's
- 54:22Speaker 3: sick of people. He's sick of people posting pictures of
- 54:27Speaker 3: themselves with fish, and he decides to implement a rule
- 54:31Speaker 3: for Instagram and Facebook where all users only get one
- 54:36Speaker 3: fish pick per year. How big of a trout does
- 54:40Speaker 3: it have to be before you burn up your one chance?
- 54:45Speaker 1: Great, great question. I'm gonna save it for a twenty
- 54:49Speaker 1: inch plus cutthroat trout.
- 54:53Speaker 3: Twenty Yeah.
- 54:54Speaker 1: I want a big, pretty cutthroat with a gold and
- 54:58Speaker 1: pink sides. And uh, that's that's a fish worth showing off.
- 55:05Speaker 1: Only caught three of those in my life.
- 55:07Speaker 3: Okay, that's what I was gonna ask. What I've never
- 55:10Speaker 3: I'm not real familiar with cuddies, so a twenty is
- 55:13Speaker 3: like a real hard to attain length.
- 55:17Speaker 1: Yep, twenty would be like the equivalent of at least
- 55:20Speaker 1: a boon and crocket, like a boon and crocket, like
- 55:22Speaker 1: a net booner. I would say, would be a twenty
- 55:25Speaker 1: inch cutthroat, and I would call it a twenty inch
- 55:28Speaker 1: cutthroat would be the equivalent to like a two foot
- 55:30Speaker 1: brown trout something like that. So I'd never caught one
- 55:35Speaker 1: in all my years fishing out west until last year.
- 55:37Speaker 1: And last year I kind of went to a shangra
- 55:39Speaker 1: last spot and caught two, but prior to that, never
- 55:44Speaker 1: even saw one that big. So that'd be a special one.
- 55:49Speaker 3: So you wouldn't use that fish picture like if your
- 55:51Speaker 3: kid's caught a cool one, you'd be like, no, this
- 55:53Speaker 3: is for me.
- 55:54Speaker 4: Hell Now, I was just gonna ask that same question.
- 56:03Speaker 4: You a bitch, Mark, You don't even love your kids?
- 56:06Speaker 3: Are you kidding me?
- 56:09Speaker 1: No?
- 56:09Speaker 3: The kids, Dan, This is a guy who left his
- 56:12Speaker 3: buddy to die exactly. So yeah, the real Mark Kenyon exposed.
- 56:17Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm having a tough time that my wife's pregnant
- 56:20Speaker 1: with someone else's child. I have target panic. This has
- 56:22Speaker 1: been a very bad year.
- 56:24Speaker 3: Hey, Dan, does your wife watch those murder mysteries? Because
- 56:27Speaker 3: I feel like clips of this are going to end
- 56:28Speaker 3: up on a dateline at some point exactly exactly, Yeah,
- 56:35Speaker 3: what's that?
- 56:36Speaker 4: What's that guy's name? Who does the creepy voice? Where
- 56:39Speaker 4: is like Psyche gets excited about in Spencer Newhart?
- 56:48Speaker 1: That would work?
- 56:50Speaker 3: Is a Spence?
- 56:51Speaker 1: It could be he'd be perfect.
- 56:54Speaker 4: Small town Michigan. Anyway, Uh, Mark, are you ready for
- 56:59Speaker 4: a curve ball question?
- 57:01Speaker 1: Yeah, let's do it.
- 57:02Speaker 3: Okay.
- 57:03Speaker 4: Ultimately, it's about late season hunting, all right. So it's
- 57:09Speaker 4: been a long season. You've been doing a lot of
- 57:11Speaker 4: filming with a brand new camera guy who's really ambitious.
- 57:17Speaker 4: He's really he really wants to make a mark so
- 57:22Speaker 4: he can work for me, eatther Man. He found his
- 57:24Speaker 4: dream job and he wants to be very successful at it.
- 57:30Speaker 4: You get back from several weeks of hunting and your
- 57:33Speaker 4: wife is moving some of your stuff around and she
- 57:37Speaker 4: finds a small packet of meth amphetamines.
- 57:40Speaker 3: And she then she says yeah, she says, hey, I.
- 57:46Speaker 4: Can't trust you anymore, and she decides to leave you
- 57:49Speaker 4: and take the children. Well throughout the rest of the season.
- 57:52Speaker 4: You go through you go through a divorce, okay, and
- 57:57Speaker 4: you lose you You only get your children like every
- 58:02Speaker 4: other week, right, So it's every other week they come
- 58:05Speaker 4: to you, they go to your wife, and so it
- 58:08Speaker 4: just so happens that they go to your wife on
- 58:11Speaker 4: a huge cold front coming through Michigan and you have
- 58:15Speaker 4: a standing bean plot or corn plot and the deer
- 58:20Speaker 4: are hammering it. How do you approach that scenario while
- 58:25Speaker 4: your kids are with your wife?
- 58:27Speaker 3: That's what.
- 58:31Speaker 1: Wow, Well, it's a lot to process. This would be
- 58:36Speaker 1: the worst year ever for sure. So I'm sure I'm
- 58:39Speaker 1: in a very very bad place mentally. But I would
- 58:43Speaker 1: look at this moment where the kids are away as
- 58:47Speaker 1: a little bit of an opportunity to get some mental
- 58:52Speaker 1: R and R I suppose. So, yeah, big cold front
- 58:55Speaker 1: coming through, and I, you know, don't have the kids.
- 58:58Speaker 1: I'm hunting. If I did have the kids, If I
- 59:01Speaker 1: did have the kids and the cold front was coming,
- 59:04Speaker 1: I'd still be hunting. Not just kidding.
- 59:11Speaker 3: You boys.
- 59:11Speaker 1: Wait in the truck. I'll be back in a couple hours.
- 59:16Speaker 3: No.
- 59:16Speaker 1: So okay, So in a situation a big coal front
- 59:20Speaker 1: coming in, I mean I think what I'd be doing
- 59:22Speaker 1: is hopefully leading into that front. I would like to
- 59:26Speaker 1: have some information about what they're doing on that standing
- 59:28Speaker 1: bean plot, so I would be if I could watch
- 59:31Speaker 1: it from afar, I would definitely be doing that as
- 59:33Speaker 1: many nights as I could leading into that front. So
- 59:36Speaker 1: late season, I'm just even more picky, like we talked about,
- 59:39Speaker 1: So I'm probably hunting the evenings and I want to
- 59:43Speaker 1: hunt them, you know, with like a very targeted assassin
- 59:48Speaker 1: like approach. So I want to see what these deer
- 59:49Speaker 1: are doing. I want to see where the bucks are
- 59:51Speaker 1: coming into the field, even if it's just younger bucks.
- 59:54Speaker 1: I want to know where that's happening. Hopefully some camera
- 59:56Speaker 1: and tell tells me like, Okay, yeah, this bedding area
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: or whatever is where the buck you're after is, or
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: some bucks that you might be interested in shooting are at.
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: And then I'm waiting for that front to hit. I'll
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: hunt that evening before the front. Let's say this is
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: late December. I'll be hunting hopefully the evening before and
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: then the couple evenings afterwards, and hopefully I don't need
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: to do a whole bunch of hunts because you know,
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: it's a kind of situation where you've got a hunt
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: or two before they might catch on to you hunting
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: that kind of situation, and I would be hunting in
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: between that bedding area heading to that beanfield. You know,
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: hopefully from what I saw, I've got a good idea
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: of where I need to start and hunt, you know,
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: a well planned hanging hunt set. And if I don't
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: have my location right that first night, I'll you know,
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: make an adjustment for the second night. Hopefully I've got
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: a situation. I don't know what property this is, but
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: you have to have some kind of good exit plan
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: with that kind of situation. You know, beanfield in December,
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: there's going to be a bunch of deer on there
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: with a cold front. So if I have to walk
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: out through that beanfield, well then you know it's game
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: over probably if you're trying to kill an older deer.
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: So I would either you know, hopefully have a buddy
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: or somebody who would come drive out there, or maybe
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: there's like a ditch or a creek or something that
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: I can sneak away out the backside to and use
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: that to exit. If there's nothing like that, I'll just
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: hunt further and further away from the food and try
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: to make sure that I'll give myself an opportunity to hunt,
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: you know, more than just one night without the whole
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: thing blown up in my face. You know, that would
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: be of course, wind direction is going to dictate where
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: I would hunt, but let's hope that this sets up
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: well for a north or northwest wind, which will probably
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: come with that cold front. And yeah, I mean that
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: first really cold, wicked day will be you know, a
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: great chance for that whatever bucks in the area to
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: come out hit the food, and I just need to
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: be set up in the right place to get a shot.
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: Would not push super close to the betting area in
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: that situation, so hopefully I can hunt low impact for
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: that evening set up. Those late season hunts are really
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: hard to move around quietly to not be seen without
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: spooking deer, and if you spook a couple dos, you know,
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: there's oftentimes that ripple effect where they'll spook back and
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: then that'll you know, make everything come out later in
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: the evening. So I would not ideally like to have
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: to push really deep in there. I would hope for
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: good access or a friend to help me out so
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: I could hunt pretty close to the food and not
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: need to risk spooking things as I go into set up.
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: So perfect situation would be like maybe there's a little
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: creek or something that runs along the north edge of
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: this beanfield, let's say, and they're betting north of that,
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: I would hopefully have watched a couple times from afar
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: or I know the area, or pictures or something has
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: told me, you know, they come through this corner or whatever.
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: But maybe there's also like a creek cross in, like
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: a favorite creek crossing something like that that helps me
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: narrow down where to set up along the edge of
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: the inside of that food source, that transition area, so
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: that I'm not just blindly picking somewhere on the field,
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: but I'm situating myself in a place that I know
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: there's a high chance that deer will funnel through this
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: as they enter the food source. And ideally we'll set
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: up with that wind. Let's say it's a northwest wind,
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: hopefully cutting off to the side of the field, so
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: that I can hunt these deer coming out to the
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: north in the west of me while my wind, my
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: wind blows to the south and the east of me.
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: And I've got that creek crossing upwind of me, So
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: that's going to hopefully funnel you know, concentrate a little
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: bit more of that activity within bow range, and you know,
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: hopefully there's a couple of trails or my observation showed
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: me that too. So those types of things make me
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: feel really good going into that hunt.
- 1:03:49Speaker 4: Okay, I want to ask a spinoff question of that,
- 1:03:54Speaker 4: and that is throughout the course of a year, early season,
- 1:03:58Speaker 4: mid season, you can you can break it really down
- 1:04:01Speaker 4: however you want. October, November, December, pre pre rep post
- 1:04:07Speaker 4: rut however you know, however you want to do it.
- 1:04:09Speaker 4: What is your definition of a cold front and how
- 1:04:13Speaker 4: much or how big of a cold front does it
- 1:04:16Speaker 4: need to be for you to get excited enough to hunt.
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: So usually ten degrees or more is like that threshold
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: that I look at as something I'm like particularly excited about.
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: If there's a front that comes through with precipitation and
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: a bear metric pressure change but not a huge temperature,
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: let's say like eight degrees or seven degrees, but a
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: rainstorm came through. Now it's seven degrees cooler, and now
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: it's high pressure on the backside. Like I would still
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: be excited about that, even though it's less than ten,
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: but usually that ten degrees are more from the daytime highs.
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: Would be something that like, I'm looking for on the
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: weather forecast and will have me interested regardless of the
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: time of year.
- 1:05:13Speaker 3: So, Dan, if that was a curveball, I don't even
- 1:05:15Speaker 3: know what you call this one. Oh geez, this is
- 1:05:19Speaker 3: this is the last one I got for you. Mark,
- 1:05:21Speaker 3: I'm gonna have to get you, gotta use your imagination here,
- 1:05:24Speaker 3: but I'm gonna I'm gonna take you around a little
- 1:05:26Speaker 3: bit and I'm gonna I'm gonna bring it home, buddy.
- 1:05:29Speaker 3: So you ready, all right? Picture this. You're standing in
- 1:05:34Speaker 3: a very specific spot. Shotgun in your hand. Okay, it
- 1:05:40Speaker 3: contains just one slug. You've got one shot. Okay. You
- 1:05:46Speaker 3: look to your left and you see your favorite little
- 1:05:49Speaker 3: botique bookstore in Bozeman, just teeming with flat brim hipsters.
- 1:05:56Speaker 3: You know, your people covered in them, just got a
- 1:05:59Speaker 3: new ship into awesome books about you know, how to
- 1:06:02Speaker 3: be a better person, some bullshit like that. Yeah, I'm okay.
- 1:06:06Speaker 3: So so you see that and you're like, oh man,
- 1:06:09Speaker 3: And then you look to your right and it is
- 1:06:12Speaker 3: just this field, this beautiful field full of pollinators. I
- 1:06:17Speaker 3: mean the density of pollinators in there. You've never seen it.
- 1:06:21Speaker 3: You're like your wildest dreams.
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: Oh man.
- 1:06:24Speaker 3: Then two dudes walk on the scene and they both
- 1:06:27Speaker 3: have lit Molotov cocktails in their hands. One's gonna chuck
- 1:06:31Speaker 3: it right through the window of that bookstore, burn the
- 1:06:34Speaker 3: whole place down. The people are gonna live. It's gonna
- 1:06:37Speaker 3: burn the bookstore down. The other guy's gonna chuck it
- 1:06:39Speaker 3: right into that field and burn up all those pollinators.
- 1:06:42Speaker 3: Who do you shoot? Who do you spare? You got
- 1:06:47Speaker 3: one shot, buddy?
- 1:06:49Speaker 4: Wow?
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: Yeah, man, Easy decision, easy decision. I'm shooting the guys
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: that are going to torch the bookshop because that stuff's
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: much harder to replace. That's gonna cost a lot of money.
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: There's life's impacted, and it's going to ruin the day
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: for all those flat brim wearing great people. They probably
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: like to fish too, and I don't want anything to
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: happen to my fishing brothers and sisters on the flip side.
- 1:07:13Speaker 3: But if you take them out, though, you have more
- 1:07:16Speaker 3: room on the stream to yourself.
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: Well, you said that none of them die, so they're
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: all going to be a fishing.
- 1:07:21Speaker 3: No matter what, they're gonna get slightly injured and miss
- 1:07:23Speaker 3: just the best fishing part of the season.
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: Regardless. Regardless of that, I'm gonna burn the pollinators because
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: that'll probably end up being better for that field anyways.
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: To give it a good burn, to reset it. It's
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: going to add nutrients to the soil. Everything will regrow,
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: but maybe even better for the next season. So it's
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: a long term play, but it will preserve the integrity
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: of our bookstore and our reading public while also putting
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: things in a better place for the pollinators in years
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: to come. Good enough, well done, gentlemen, you guys, any
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: more for you? Dan?
- 1:08:03Speaker 4: I mean I could sit here all day long and
- 1:08:06Speaker 4: do this all right, but I feel like I want
- 1:08:11Speaker 4: to get into the rapid.
- 1:08:12Speaker 3: Fire questions the there you go? Where we just go?
- 1:08:15Speaker 3: Where we go, unless unless you want me to ask more.
- 1:08:18Speaker 3: It's up to you.
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: No, I feel good. I mean, if you guys think
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: I made it through the gauntlet, if you guys are
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: satisfied with my performance here, then yes, I'm ready for
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: the rapid fire.
- 1:08:29Speaker 3: Got Tony, how are you guys?
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: How are you guys handling this?
- 1:08:34Speaker 3: I don't know know, I was just told that we
- 1:08:36Speaker 3: were going to skip it, but uh, I was kind
- 1:08:44Speaker 3: of hoping you just gloss right over it and we
- 1:08:46Speaker 3: go on to something else. But we could do it.
- 1:08:49Speaker 3: I'll take one, you take the other one. Dan, we'll
- 1:08:51Speaker 3: go back and fill with you.
- 1:08:52Speaker 4: Let's let's do it. Let's do it as quick as possible.
- 1:08:55Speaker 4: I want what I'm really hoping for here. And this
- 1:08:58Speaker 4: is kind of a note to whoever's this. I would
- 1:09:02Speaker 4: really like us to focus on answers that might get
- 1:09:05Speaker 4: him in trouble or be really controversial, so then they
- 1:09:09Speaker 4: have clips to throw which would actually question like people
- 1:09:14Speaker 4: would start to question his integrity.
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: Yeah, this is gonna go well, all.
- 1:09:19Speaker 3: Right, well, why don't you start it off? Dan here?
- 1:09:23Speaker 4: Okay, Well, I'm just going to start out easy, okay,
- 1:09:27Speaker 4: all right, Tony?
- 1:09:29Speaker 3: Are you ready? I am all right?
- 1:09:33Speaker 4: Rapid fire starting now? Typical or non typical white tails?
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: Non typical?
- 1:09:42Speaker 3: Okay, Tony. So I have to confess I didn't come
- 1:09:46Speaker 3: up with anything for this.
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: Geez, Tony, what a darrel?
- 1:09:52Speaker 3: And part of it, I'm not going to explain that anyway.
- 1:09:57Speaker 4: Dan.
- 1:09:57Speaker 3: You can just handle this part.
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: Dan's the responsible one in the group.
- 1:10:07Speaker 4: Doubt it okay. Okay, mechanicals are fixed blade all season long.
- 1:10:15Speaker 4: You have to you can only have one mechanical or.
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: Fixed blade mechanical okay, pre Rut or post rap pre
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: rup pre Rut.
- 1:10:29Speaker 4: Alaska or Montana, Alaska, Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings.
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: Uh, Lord of the Rings?
- 1:10:41Speaker 4: Okay, all right, that's that because if you said Harry Potter,
- 1:10:45Speaker 4: I was going to just unleash on you and call
- 1:10:47Speaker 4: you a nerd.
- 1:10:49Speaker 3: Okay, because I watch did you see the look in
- 1:10:54Speaker 3: his eyes?
- 1:10:54Speaker 4: Though?
- 1:10:55Speaker 3: I think he wanted to answer Harry.
- 1:10:56Speaker 4: I know he did. I think the truth out of him.
- 1:11:00Speaker 3: H Yeah. I think I think he I think he's like,
- 1:11:04Speaker 3: I'm gonna play those cool because I know everybody wants
- 1:11:06Speaker 3: Lord of the Rings. But in his I think in
- 1:11:09Speaker 3: his heart he was like Harry Potter.
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: I I I enjoyed Harry Potter, but but no Lord
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: of the Rings, man that takes the kick.
- 1:11:17Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:11:18Speaker 4: You've been to a lot of national park's favorite National
- 1:11:21Speaker 4: park to go visit?
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: Mm hmm grand tee ton all right, all right, bucket
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: list animals that you have not already shot, give me
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: five five uh moose yep yep. Okay uh moose, pronghorn
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: sheep killed, big horn sheep someday, black bear, and heck,
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: a mountain go would be awesome. I don't see it
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: in my future, but i'd be sweet.
- 1:12:04Speaker 3: Okay. Do you do you see a big horn seep
- 1:12:07Speaker 3: in your future? No?
- 1:12:08Speaker 4: Not.
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: I don't see a big horn sheep in my future either.
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: I think I think, yeah, I think a black bears possible,
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: prong horns possible in a moose. You know, if if
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: really I get lucky and my dreams come true, a
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: moose is maybe in the in the running someday, but
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: the other two probably not.
- 1:12:23Speaker 4: Okay, favorite favorite favorites out of state hunt archery season?
- 1:12:33Speaker 4: What's your favorite state to hunt.
- 1:12:36Speaker 3: Out of state?
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: I'll just say I like the Great Plains, any one
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: of the Great Plains states. I really enjoyed that area.
- 1:12:43Speaker 4: Okay, I mean from here on out it just gets
- 1:12:49Speaker 4: real vulgar. So I didn't know, are we done with
- 1:12:52Speaker 4: the rapid questions or do you just want me keep going?
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: Maybe? Maybe maybe we should be done with the rapid
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: fire questions now?
- 1:12:59Speaker 3: Okay?
- 1:13:00Speaker 4: Oh here, one one more, one more, one more? Do
- 1:13:04Speaker 4: you bring an extra bow on your out of state hunts?
- 1:13:08Speaker 4: In case your regular bow gets damaged.
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: Uh. No, I have done it a few times. A
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: few times have done it, but usually don't.
- 1:13:22Speaker 3: Do you Do you know why you don't? Mark?
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: Do you?
- 1:13:25Speaker 3: Yeah? Do you know why you don't?
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: Why is that tony?
- 1:13:28Speaker 3: Because you've never needed one yet?
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: True?
- 1:13:32Speaker 3: True? If you get out there and you need one.
- 1:13:35Speaker 3: I mean part of it so, and I'm being totally
- 1:13:37Speaker 3: honest here, or serious, part of it is you have
- 1:13:42Speaker 3: extra everything. If you have an extra bow, you know,
- 1:13:45Speaker 3: and if you're out spotting and stocking or something and
- 1:13:48Speaker 3: you break like a quiver connection, you're like, oh that,
- 1:13:50Speaker 3: you don't think that's that big of a deal, but
- 1:13:53Speaker 3: it is. And so having a bat not only if
- 1:13:55Speaker 3: your bow something happens, you get tossed off a horse
- 1:13:58Speaker 3: or whatever, but you just have all those parts and
- 1:14:01Speaker 3: everything to work with. It's it's not a bad idea.
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: No, I mean, I certainly is a good idea if
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: you can swing it space wise. Well do I survive?
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: Did I make it? Do we do it?
- 1:14:12Speaker 3: I think so? I think so?
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: Well you guys, You guys exceeded my expectations when it
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: came to creativity and curveball. So well done, gentlemen, and
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: I thoroughly enjoyed that, So thank you.
- 1:14:31Speaker 3: I can't wait till next time.
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: Yeah, next time you're gonna be the you know, you're
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: gonna be the guest next time, and I'm gonna come
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: at you with the same level of malice that you
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: brought to the table here today. So I realized I
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: was maybe not malice, but you really you really spent
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: a lot of time imagining horrible situations for my life,
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: and and for that I owe you.
- 1:14:56Speaker 3: Those are just those are just called educated guesses. Mark,
- 1:14:59Speaker 3: right right, I have a question the odds. I don't
- 1:15:03Speaker 3: want to end quite yet.
- 1:15:04Speaker 4: I want to ask you, out of all the guests
- 1:15:09Speaker 4: that you've had on this show, and obviously you can't
- 1:15:12Speaker 4: answer me or Tony as as answers, but out of
- 1:15:17Speaker 4: out of all the guests that you've had on this show,
- 1:15:21Speaker 4: that you who are some of the people that you
- 1:15:23Speaker 4: respect the most?
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: Oh, I mean I think there's maybe you put him
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: on a pedestal. Yeah, So like there's a lot that
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: I really enjoy. They've all been great, but I guess
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: you know one guy who I just always always enjoy
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: talking to and is always like a standout is Mark Dury.
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: I feel like I really appreciate his analytical approach and
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: thought process, so like whenever we talk, we're like speaking
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: the same language when it comes like nerding out on
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: some of the details and stuff. So I always appreciate that,
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: and I just think he's like one of the very
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: very best communicators about this stuff. So even though like
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: the way I hunt is not very much like the
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: way he hunts, even though his situation is very different
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: than mine and then different than a lot of ours, right,
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: I still feel like he's always got something useful to share.
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: I feel like there's things I've learned from him that
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: can even be applied to public land hunts and things
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: like that, just because he's a very good communicator and
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: he understands deer and you just have to adjust his
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: suggestions based on the level of pressure that your dear
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: hair have or what the you know, scenario is that
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: you hunting. But he's just a guy like I really
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: enjoy talking with and geeking out on that stuff with.
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: So he's one who comes to mind right out the gate. Yeah,
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: that'll be my first just the first thing that came
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: to mind to be Mark.
- 1:16:45Speaker 3: I feel like you were angling for a job there
- 1:16:46Speaker 3: a little bit.
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: I hope, I hope I'm not. I hope I'm not
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: in need for that.
- 1:16:54Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: And uh, you know another Andy, like we all we
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: love Andy May He's another one of those guys who
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: he's an og. He's very, very very knowledgeable, another really
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: good communicator and definitely someone I look at as one
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: of the best deer hunters I know, while also not
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: being a jerk and being like a humble, good guy
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: to talk to. So, you know, if if Mark is
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: like your private land managed guy, and I was, if
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: I was going to pick someone who's more like the
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: di y or public, maybe Andy would be the guy
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: on the other side that I would put up in
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: my top two at least first first thoughts.
- 1:17:31Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a good answer.
- 1:17:34Speaker 4: Do you feel that we could use the Wired to
- 1:17:38Speaker 4: Hunt platform to ask the same exact questions that we
- 1:17:43Speaker 4: asked you today to those guys? Uh?
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: No, okay, I think uh, I.
- 1:17:54Speaker 4: Just wanted I was curious, you know, brainstorman I had
- 1:17:56Speaker 4: an idea.
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: You're an idea guy, and I appreciated.
- 1:18:01Speaker 3: I'm the wildcard. The wildcard.
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: You are the wildcard. That's it. That's just makes you wonderful. Well,
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: if nothing else. I think people laugh today, which is
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: the best medicine we could ever ask for. So good
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: stuff on that front. Real quick, Do you guys have
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: a few more minutes to talk through our goals and plans?
- 1:18:22Speaker 3: Yep?
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: All right, Dan, Do you want to lead us off
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: with a quick rundown of what your hunt plans are
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: this year and your goals maybe hopes, however you want
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: to frame it?
- 1:18:33Speaker 3: Yep, okay, real quick.
- 1:18:36Speaker 4: Just got finally just got trail cameras up last two
- 1:18:41Speaker 4: weeks and my number one target buck on my main
- 1:18:45Speaker 4: farm showed back up.
- 1:18:46Speaker 3: So he is alive.
- 1:18:48Speaker 4: He's not showing up on camera a regularly regularly, but
- 1:18:53Speaker 4: he's alive, and based off of historic knowledge, I know
- 1:18:58Speaker 4: the the route that he's running, and so I'm feeling
- 1:19:03Speaker 4: really good about attacking him come that prerect timeframe.
- 1:19:09Speaker 3: And so.
- 1:19:11Speaker 4: New farm that's been really active with they've been mowing
- 1:19:15Speaker 4: and bailing hay right now, so I'm getting a lot
- 1:19:17Speaker 4: of that on trail cameras. But once they get that
- 1:19:20Speaker 4: Hey out of there, I feel like the cameras are
- 1:19:23Speaker 4: going to start opening up and I'm going to get
- 1:19:25Speaker 4: a good idea of what's running around on the main farm.
- 1:19:28Speaker 4: Last year, there were some absolute studs on that farm.
- 1:19:32Speaker 4: So I'm looking forward to seeing that. I have an
- 1:19:34Speaker 4: out of state hunt to South Dakota where I'm going
- 1:19:38Speaker 4: to go all in on mule deer until I don't
- 1:19:42Speaker 4: go all in on mule deer and I find myself
- 1:19:44Speaker 4: hunting white beast. So I got that's planned for mid
- 1:19:50Speaker 4: to late October as well, and then depending on if
- 1:19:54Speaker 4: and when I take out in Iowa, I might be
- 1:19:56Speaker 4: hopping up to some public in Wiscon in Minnesota or
- 1:20:01Speaker 4: potentially Oklahoma, depending on if and when nice.
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: So, other than killing your target buck, is there any
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: like top goal or two within that? Or are you
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: not really focusing on the target buck? You watch shoot
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: any four year old? What's your what are you chasing
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: specifically this year?
- 1:20:20Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 1:20:21Speaker 4: So you know it's mature, right, it's whatever the top
- 1:20:24Speaker 4: tier buck in on the on said farms are right,
- 1:20:28Speaker 4: And so I don't get too terribly fired up on
- 1:20:31Speaker 4: velvet pictures because we all know the velvet comes off,
- 1:20:36Speaker 4: there's redistribution of deer and sometimes they stick around, sometimes
- 1:20:41Speaker 4: they don't, or sometimes they disappear and then come back
- 1:20:44Speaker 4: in that late October timeframe and so I don't. I
- 1:20:48Speaker 4: like to I like to know that certain deer exists
- 1:20:51Speaker 4: and are in the area. But from a strategy standpoint,
- 1:20:54Speaker 4: these pictures don't mean too much right now, and so
- 1:20:58Speaker 4: I will when I do my card pull, like at
- 1:21:02Speaker 4: the end of October, I'll get a better idea of
- 1:21:05Speaker 4: what deer running through the area, and then I'll make
- 1:21:09Speaker 4: a strategy at that point.
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: Sweet, what about you, Tony oh Man.
- 1:21:15Speaker 3: I have a lot of goals this year. First and foremost,
- 1:21:21Speaker 3: my daughter drew a bear tag in Wisconsin. So I'm
- 1:21:24Speaker 3: driving over there baiting bears, and I have some absolute
- 1:21:27Speaker 3: toads coming in. I have a bear tag too, but
- 1:21:30Speaker 3: I don't care. I'll hunt them some. But I want
- 1:21:33Speaker 3: to get her a bear. And I was kind of
- 1:21:36Speaker 3: before I started bating, I was like, whatever, whatever, legal
- 1:21:39Speaker 3: bear is great. But I've got a couple bears coming
- 1:21:43Speaker 3: in that are like four hundred ish four hundred plus
- 1:21:47Speaker 3: maybe live weight, And so now I'm kind of like, man,
- 1:21:49Speaker 3: do we really put in some time to try to
- 1:21:51Speaker 3: get her a big, big bear? So I'm working on that.
- 1:21:54Speaker 3: I want to get the girls both Bucks. They've never
- 1:21:57Speaker 3: gotten Bucks in the same year, and so I'm working
- 1:21:59Speaker 3: on that too, and I have a couple of deer
- 1:22:01Speaker 3: that are they I think they're going to stick to
- 1:22:04Speaker 3: what they're doing for that opener in Wisconsin over there.
- 1:22:08Speaker 3: And then I last time you and I talked, Mark,
- 1:22:11Speaker 3: you were talking about a new spot you had, and
- 1:22:14Speaker 3: I told you that I had. You know, I flew
- 1:22:16Speaker 3: really close to the sun and I thought I was
- 1:22:18Speaker 3: losing this this property by my house. Well I got
- 1:22:21Speaker 3: on that place. The guy called me up. He's like,
- 1:22:23Speaker 3: we're gonna hang some stands. What are we doing? And
- 1:22:26Speaker 3: so I've got that place set up and a couple
- 1:22:28Speaker 3: of cameras in there, and I don't want to curse
- 1:22:31Speaker 3: it yet, but it is the pictures I'm getting. Just
- 1:22:37Speaker 3: the amount of deer in there is so awesome. And
- 1:22:41Speaker 3: I haven't got any big, big deer in there, but
- 1:22:43Speaker 3: there's a couple that are like one thirty to one
- 1:22:46Speaker 3: fifty class that are They're not real consistent yet, but
- 1:22:48Speaker 3: I think they will be a little bit later. So
- 1:22:52Speaker 3: it's like it's one of those things that almost never
- 1:22:55Speaker 3: ever happens to you, you know, especially where I live,
- 1:22:58Speaker 3: where it's like you Now you get a place to
- 1:22:59Speaker 3: hunt that's seven eight minutes from your house and it
- 1:23:02Speaker 3: has quality and quantity, and so I'm I'm working on
- 1:23:07Speaker 3: that and just trying to figure out what I'm gonna
- 1:23:09Speaker 3: do with my Minnesota tag there, because that is I'm
- 1:23:13Speaker 3: so excited to hunt a new spot that I don't
- 1:23:16Speaker 3: have to drive two hours to go get to, you know,
- 1:23:21Speaker 3: and then you know, I've got a Oklahoma hunt, in
- 1:23:23Speaker 3: a North Dakota and something else, I think, but all
- 1:23:28Speaker 3: white tails just just I just want to spend my
- 1:23:31Speaker 3: time this season with the girls doing cool stuff and
- 1:23:33Speaker 3: then hunt some new places and hunt some places.
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: I want to what's the deal with that new property?
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: Is that sounds like the landowner is a hunter too?
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: Is he? Are you guys both hunting it? Or is he?
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: What's the deal?
- 1:23:46Speaker 3: So this is a guy, a very typical kind of
- 1:23:48Speaker 3: Upper Midwestern dude who's rifle hunted. You know, they have
- 1:23:51Speaker 3: the family cabin, the deer shack, the whole thing. He's
- 1:23:57Speaker 3: he started bow hunting very recently, I think in the
- 1:23:59Speaker 3: life last couple of years, never killed a deer with
- 1:24:01Speaker 3: the bow. I honestly don't know for sure if he's
- 1:24:04Speaker 3: killed one with a rifle. And so he's real green,
- 1:24:10Speaker 3: and so I should have said this, like, part of
- 1:24:11Speaker 3: my goal is to get that dude his first deer,
- 1:24:15Speaker 3: and you know, he'll get his chances. I think he
- 1:24:18Speaker 3: shot at one buck with a bow one time walking
- 1:24:21Speaker 3: around a couple of years ago. But he's just he's
- 1:24:24Speaker 3: going out there with me, hanging stands like he's he's
- 1:24:26Speaker 3: not really familiar with our process at all, you know, lifelines,
- 1:24:31Speaker 3: the whole thing, cameras, putting up blinds, brushing them in.
- 1:24:35Speaker 3: So that's actually been pretty fun because he's just like
- 1:24:38Speaker 3: a sponge. He's like he's there to learn the only
- 1:24:43Speaker 3: thing that worries me about it. And you know how
- 1:24:45Speaker 3: this goes, right, You get permission, you do all this work,
- 1:24:49Speaker 3: and then you start getting pictures of big bucks, and
- 1:24:52Speaker 3: I'm just I don't want him to be like, I
- 1:24:54Speaker 3: don't think I want this dude in here hunting these
- 1:24:56Speaker 3: big bucks. You know, they're on my land, right, You're like,
- 1:25:00Speaker 3: it's the one danger, but I don't. I don't think
- 1:25:02Speaker 3: that's gonna happen. But it really you know the last
- 1:25:04Speaker 3: time we talked about this, I was like I'd kind
- 1:25:06Speaker 3: of resigned myself that this was gone. I'm not this
- 1:25:09Speaker 3: this spot's and no go and now you know, I'm
- 1:25:13Speaker 3: I'm set up in there, and the amount of deer
- 1:25:15Speaker 3: and I'll say this too, the thing I'm learning in there,
- 1:25:18Speaker 3: and I don't I don't really know what's going on.
- 1:25:20Speaker 3: But when I walked through there with him, I found
- 1:25:23Speaker 3: an apple tree that he didn't know was there. And
- 1:25:26Speaker 3: I'm telling you, whatever this apple tree is doing, if
- 1:25:29Speaker 3: you could bottle that up and sell it to other hunters,
- 1:25:31Speaker 3: it is unreal. And there's there's wild plums, there's acorns dropping,
- 1:25:36Speaker 3: there's other apple trees. It's not like there's an absence
- 1:25:39Speaker 3: of soft and hard masks or destination food in the area.
- 1:25:42Speaker 3: But I put a camera up on that tree just
- 1:25:44Speaker 3: to see the amount of deer, turkeys, raccoons, gray fox, coyotes,
- 1:25:51Speaker 3: like everything comes in there and checks for those apples,
- 1:25:54Speaker 3: and it's all day long, like it's you know, we've
- 1:25:58Speaker 3: had this weather lately where it's like, you know, ninety
- 1:26:01Speaker 3: seven degrees and one hundred percent humidity, and you're like,
- 1:26:04Speaker 3: there's nothing, nothing should be moving. And I'm getting pictures
- 1:26:07Speaker 3: of bucks at like one in the afternoon. They must
- 1:26:11Speaker 3: just get up out of their bed and they're like,
- 1:26:12Speaker 3: I'm gonna go see if any apples fell and these
- 1:26:15Speaker 3: are good deer and you know, doze and scrapper bucks
- 1:26:18Speaker 3: and stuff, and it's like, I don't. It's just opening
- 1:26:21Speaker 3: my eyes to that reality. They're like, man, if there's
- 1:26:24Speaker 3: a food source like that, a very specific thing that
- 1:26:27Speaker 3: they are into, they're checking it because there's just competition there.
- 1:26:31Speaker 3: So they're checking it all day long. It's so cool.
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: So opening day setup, I think that's the spot.
- 1:26:39Speaker 3: Well, I can't. So this is how you know, Okay,
- 1:26:43Speaker 3: this is dumb thing to complain about. I have to
- 1:26:47Speaker 3: film in southeastern Minnesota for the first four days of
- 1:26:51Speaker 3: the season, so I have I have other stuff set
- 1:26:53Speaker 3: up down there. There's some pretty good bucks down there.
- 1:26:56Speaker 3: Then I have to go pick up my daughter and
- 1:26:58Speaker 3: we're filming the first five days of the bear season.
- 1:27:02Speaker 3: Then I come home for a day and I gotta
- 1:27:04Speaker 3: fly to Bozeman now in the end of September, and
- 1:27:09Speaker 3: so for the first essentially fifteen days of the season,
- 1:27:11Speaker 3: I can't hunt this new place. But the owner. I
- 1:27:15Speaker 3: talked to the landowner. I was like, you, dude, you
- 1:27:17Speaker 3: need to get out there, and he's like, I'm gonna
- 1:27:19Speaker 3: wait for you because he doesn't he's never butchered one
- 1:27:21Speaker 3: on his own, like he's not real confident in the process.
- 1:27:25Speaker 3: So I was like, well, if you want to wait
- 1:27:26Speaker 3: for me to get there, not going ahead of time,
- 1:27:29Speaker 3: that's great. So no, it'll be probably in October, right
- 1:27:34Speaker 3: around the beginning of October when I get to hunt
- 1:27:36Speaker 3: there for the first time.
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: Man, you just got to make sure this guy never
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: discovers the Wired to Hunt podcast, because if he realizes
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: that he can get all the learning he needs from you,
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: but doesn't need you hunting the property with it, he
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: can just listen to on the podcast, you're screwed.
- 1:27:50Speaker 3: I'm I don't get the impression this guy is gonna
- 1:27:54Speaker 3: be subscribing to Wired a hundred times soon.
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: Let's just get it that way, man, that sounds good.
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: So on my side, I take off for a Wisconsin
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: and Minnesota fishing hunting trip combo in mid September, so
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: that one would be like any deer would be a
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: good deer, So that'll be kind of fun. And then
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: when October hits be targeting the local Michigan spots. I've got,
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: you know, as we talked about a few weeks ago, Tony,
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: I've got a new property. I've picked up access to
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: that I'm pretty excited about. I have went out and
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: did all the scouting we talked about. I've got a
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: bunch of cameras out there, and there's a lot of deer.
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: There's bucks. There's not the age class buck that I
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: thought there was going to be. There's like a lot
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: of two year olds and three year olds and maybe
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: there's been like two bucks that maybe or four, So
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: we'll see. You know, stuff's obviously gonna change once September hits.
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: So I've i've I'm hoping kind of my feel on
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: the properties that really sets up more for a fall
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: range this year. In particular, there's beans and open canopy
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: woods and stuff on a lot of the neighboring property,
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: but the property itself that I can hunt is corn
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: and like thicker than thick stuff. So that's the kind
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: of thing that they're not necessarily going to be in
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: super heavy in the summer, but I'm sure in the
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: fall they will be. So I'm counting on hopefully something
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: moving in that I'll be really excited about. But either way,
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: I think we'll have some fun. And as far as
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: goals in Michigan, I do have like a number one
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: target buck on my main farm, which is the buck
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: I call the wide nine. And this is a deer
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: that has been around the longest of any deer I've
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: ever followed. This would be the fourth year that I've
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: been able to see him because as a two year
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: old he stood out because he was a really wide
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: nine pointer as a two year old, and then he's
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: just basically been the same thing, but a little bit
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: bigger every single year. So he's five and a half
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: year this year and the only five and a half
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: year old I know of in that area, so he'll
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: be number one. There's a second buck that my son
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: named Bulldozer. He's a pretty cool nine pointer as well.
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: They're both decent. He's a four year old. So there'll
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: be something in southern Michigan between that and the new farm.
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: And then a big thing is up in our Northern
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: Michigan deer camp. We've got a bunch of work we've
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: been doing up there. We've never had that set up
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: as well as it is now, and I've got a
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: five day trip planned up there in October with my
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: dad where the goal is just to help him kill
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: a deer up there. So that's something I'm very excited
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: about because I'll have a good excuse to be able
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: to spend extra time up there, and it's work and
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: can spend some time with my dad, And so we
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: put in We had some help come in the spring
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: and we carved in like a little microfood plot in
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: our big mature woods, and then two other like betting
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: pockets in there, and then we expanded the one little
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: eighth acre food plot we had into like an acre.
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: So last week we went in there and we set
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: up four blinds in spots for my day for different
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: wind directions and stuff. We planted, fertilized and lined to
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: the food plots, got four scrape trees up, four sets
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: of trial cameras, and then when all that was done,
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: I was feeling great. We found out that one of
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: our neighbors, who was a non hunter, planted like an
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: acre and a half of corn on the edge of
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: our property that he just put up there because he
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: wants the deer to have something to eat and there's
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: not agg in the area. So it was already gonna
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: be a huge deal for us to have an acre
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: food plot in the middle of this big swampy woods country.
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: And now there's that back in the cover, and then
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: an acre of corn just on the other side, so
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: we all of a sudden like went from zero high
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: quality food to now a ton of it relative to
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: the area. So I'm I'm like over the moon excited
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: about what happens up there, both for my dad, but
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: then in gun season when I go back, you know,
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: i'd certainly shoot something if I could get a half
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: decent buck up there too. So goals are, hopefully kill
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: the wide nine or mature buck down in one of
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: the southern places. Hopefully get my dad a deer up camp.
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: I'm going back to Nebraska for a week in November,
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: so I would love to kill a better buck even there.
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: I'm gonna be a little bit more picky in Nebraska
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: this year, just because I want to spend more time there.
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: Like I killed the deer the first day last year,
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: and it's so much fun that I just want to
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: be there longer. So excited about that one. And then
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: I want a one hundred in control shot this year,
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: like I've I think both of you know. Last year,
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: you know, again, I was redeveloping my shooting process and
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: just trying to get better, more in control and stuff
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: and last year, I did better, but I'd say like
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: all my shots, like the best I ever did was
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: like maybe like a B or B plus on you know,
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: going through my entire process, not skipping any steps, not
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: rushing at all, I did better, but I still know,
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: like the very final thing, it was still like, you know,
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: muscle memory taken over a little bit. I want to
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: have one shot at least where it's like, man, that
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: was perfect. I want a perfect shot this year, so
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: I'm working towards that. And and then I just want
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: to keep the fun that I had last year, like
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: continue to just focus on enjoying it, continue to stop
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: worrying about all the outside noise, and just like keep
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: the good vibes going, which a lot of that too,
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: is like spending more time with friends and family during
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: hunting season, which I'm gonna try to do this year.
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: And yeah, that's my plan. So it'll be September when
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: this one goes out, or at least the last day
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: of bat August. So basically the fall begins now and
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: we're off to the races. So best of luck, gentlemen, Best.
- 1:33:32Speaker 3: Of luck, same to you guys, you too, buddy, hey.
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: And thank you, thank you, both for doing this. This
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: is fun. It's a good excuse to laugh a lot,
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: catch up a little, and embarrass me. So thank you.
- 1:33:45Speaker 3: Mission complete, Yeah, buddy, mission.
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: Complete, and that is a wrap. Thank you all for
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: joining us for this one. It was different. I guess
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: you could say to say the least Tony and Dan
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: and really gave. I don't know through miss some curveballs.
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: Took this in a different direction than I was planning.
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: But you never know what's gonna happen with those two.
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: Hopefully you still learn a few things there in between
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: them insulting my pride, my marriage, and who knows what else.
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: But try to be a good sport, try to have
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: a good time, and that we did so thanks for
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: being a part of it. Appreciate you being a part
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: of this community. Hunting season is here or just about
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: for some of you in certain states, so if you
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: are hitting those early season dates with the bow, I'm
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: wishing you the best of luck, have fun out there,
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: keep your priorities straight, enjoy yourself, be safe, and until
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: next time, stay wired to hunt.
