Transcript
- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Swahili with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Episode 87 already — can you believe it? Lucas: I know. And today we're doing something I think you'll really enjoy, Luna. Luna: Oh? What is it? Lucas: We're going to a restaurant. But not to order food — we're ordering drinks. Luna: Okay, nice. So like, 'I want a soda', 'I want water' — that kind of thing? Lucas: Exactly. Let's start. The first phrase is 'Nataka soda.'. Luna: Nataka soda. Lucas: Perfect. 'Nataka' means 'I want'. 'Soda' is soda or any soft drink. So 'Nataka soda' — I want a soda. Luna: Nataka soda. Easy enough. What if I want water instead? Lucas: Then you say 'Nataka maji.' 'Maji' is water. Luna: Nataka maji. Lucas: Good. Now, if you want cold water, you say 'Maji ya baridi.' 'Baridi' means cold. Luna: Maji ya baridi. So that's cold water. Lucas: Exactly. And if you want a specific brand, like Pepsi, you say 'Pepsi, tafadhali.' 'Tafadhali' means please. Luna: Pepsi, tafadhali. Simple. And then 'Asante' for thank you. Lucas: Right. So let's put it together. Imagine you're at a restaurant. You say: 'Nataka soda.' Then the waiter asks which one. You say 'Pepsi, tafadhali.' Then 'Asante.'. Luna: Okay, let me try a whole scene. 'Nataka soda. Pepsi, tafadhali. Asante.' How was that? Lucas: That was excellent. Really natural. Luna: Cool. What if I want water instead? 'Nataka maji. Maji ya baridi, tafadhali. Asante.' Lucas: Perfect. You're ready to order drinks in Swahili. Luna: Nice. I can already imagine being at a beachside cafe in Zanzibar, ordering a cold soda. Lucas: That's the dream, right? And speaking of dreams — if Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with this language, we just wanted to mention something. Luna: Yeah. This podcast is ad-free and we keep it going because of listeners who find it useful. Lucas: Honestly, if today was worth a coffee to you, that's the link — buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: Yeah, it really helps. And we appreciate every bit of support. Lucas: So back to ordering. Let's practice a little more. Luna, you're at the restaurant. What do you say? Luna: Hmm. I'll have 'Nataka maji ya baridi, tafadhali. Asante.' Lucas: Great. Now try asking for a specific soda. Luna: Nataka soda. Pepsi, tafadhali. Asante. Lucas: You've got it. Let's do a quick review. Repeat after me: Nataka soda. Luna: Nataka soda. Lucas: Nataka maji. Luna: Nataka maji. Lucas: Maji ya baridi. Luna: Maji ya baridi. Lucas: Pepsi, tafadhali. Luna: Pepsi, tafadhali. Lucas: Asante. Luna: Asante. Lucas: Perfect. Keep practicing these and you'll be ordering like a local. Luna: Yeah, I feel pretty confident now. Thanks, Lucas. Lucas: That's it for today. Practice these till we chat again. Luna: Kwaheri!
