- 0:00The other day at work, I was having SpaghettiOs for lunch and it brought me down a huge rabbit
- 0:06hole of death row meals.
- 0:07And I remember a criminal.
- 0:10Not SpaghettiOs, I hope.
- 0:12No, yeah, someone's death row meal had SpaghettiOs in them and it was Thomas Joseph Grassow.
- 0:18He had a bunch of other stuff, but I remember SpaghettiOs with meatballs was definitely
- 0:21in his death row.
- 0:22I'm not going to list the rest of it.
- 0:24If you want to go ahead and search his name and see everything else that he ate, you
- 0:27can. But SpaghettiOs and meatballs was on his death row meal.
- 0:30So just have me thinking, what would be your guys' death row meal if you had to choose?
- 0:36Oh, God.
- 0:37Okay, SpaghettiOs slept, but they wouldn't be in there.
- 0:42Yeah.
- 0:43Okay, she was no straight Chef Boyardee instead.
- 0:45Oh my gosh, before he's so good, like little rabbit-o-ly's, oh my God.
- 0:50The can.
- 0:51A commercial rolling down the road.
- 0:52Absolutely.
- 0:53And you don't even have to heat that up.
- 0:54You can just eat that shit straight out the can.
- 0:56It's good at room temperature.
- 0:58Okay, so death row, and we're thinking like whatever we want, your guys are living.
- 1:04You're slurping.
- 1:05Okay.
- 1:06I want an appetizer of really good creamy lobster bisque.
- 1:12I want big chunks of lobster in there.
- 1:16I want it to just be decadent and with like a little piece of bread on the side that I
- 1:20can like dunk in, like bread and soup.
- 1:24Okay, that's just the appetizer though.
- 1:26And then the actual meal, I want just the most calorie packed, fucking cheesy enchiladas.
- 1:37And like some really good rice and beans.
- 1:39Fresh tortilla is made by like someone's Nana in the back.
- 1:43Like I want it to be good.
- 1:45And then dessert.
- 1:47Oh, dessert.
- 1:49Maybe like one of those lava cakes at Applebees because I always low-key really want one,
- 1:54but there's like 10,000 calories in it.
- 1:56And I'm always feeling like I should eat that.
- 1:58But I'm going to die.
- 2:00Give me that lava cake.
- 2:01And no, you can't have a bite.
- 2:03And I'm going to wash it all down with a couple pickle beers.
- 2:08A couple of beers.
- 2:09Yeah.
- 2:10Oh, and a nice bloody, nice bloody Mary.
- 2:13Long time listen, I'll know.
- 2:16Sean, I love your bloody Mary's.
- 2:18That meal makes no sense.
- 2:19It's super enchiladas bloody Mary's.
- 2:23Applebees, but you know what I'm going to die.
- 2:26I don't care.
- 2:27It's going to be good.
- 2:28That sounds like something I want to order when I'm the most violently hungover I have ever
- 2:33been in my entire life.
- 2:34Like that exact order.
- 2:37It's like I need all of these things.
- 2:40And then like small quantities.
- 2:42And then I'll take a nap and then I'll go at it again.
- 2:45I don't know how long they let you keep the food.
- 2:47But if you could work in a nap, then it goes back for it.
- 2:51Yeah.
- 2:52Can I take a little nap?
- 2:53Not before I die because I just need to like digest this stuff a little bit.
- 2:57Otherwise, I'm going to get a tummy ache and that's like I'm going to be comfort anybody.
- 3:00Remember, like years ago I went to Vegas with my girlfriends.
- 3:04And Jessica, who I mentioned on the show all the time, was like, I really want spaghetti,
- 3:08but I also really want mashed potatoes.
- 3:11Um, so the server brought her spaghetti and mashed potatoes.
- 3:16And it was incredible.
- 3:18And since then I've been like, you know what?
- 3:20Screw it.
- 3:21And I'm like, I'm going to get a little nap.
- 3:22I'm going to get a little nap.

- 10:06I'm the first one that I found was fictor, thugor, or fictor.
- 10:06I'm the first one that I found was fictor, thugor, or fictor.
- 10:07I'm the first one that I found was fictor, thugor, or fictor.
- 10:08I'm the first one that I found was fictor, thugor, or fictor.
- 10:09I'm the first one that I found was fictor, thugor or fictor.
- 10:10I'm the first one that I found was fictor, thugor or fictor.
- 10:11I'm the first one that I found was fictor, thugor, or fictor.
- 10:12I'm the first one that I found was fictor, thugor or fictor.
- 10:13Yes we do.
- 10:29Welcome to the pop culture junkie podcast.
- 10:52I'm Nicole here with my fellow junkies.
- 10:55Olivia.
- 10:56And Shana.
- 10:59How are you both doing today?
- 11:01Fans, have you list?
- 11:03I am on vacation as a five o'clock out of offices on truly canned, open,
- 11:10pants, non-existent.
- 11:12It's great, it's great time to be alive.
- 11:15How about you guys?
- 11:17I'm doing well, I'll do very well.
- 11:19I had a fun weekend hanging around with Nicole.
- 11:22And you know, we kicked Shana out, we said you can't sit with us.
- 11:27No, it was cruel.
- 11:30It was cruel, I was unusual.
- 11:32It was a good time.
- 11:34I can't remember the last time we recorded, but a separate time, Shana and I got to go to a
- 11:39Barbie Brave, which was the most fun.
- 11:43So yeah, we've just been doing really fun things, really fun themed things.
- 11:49I love a good theme night, dude.
- 11:52Oh my God, that reminds me, I want to talk about Jonah Hill for a second.
- 11:58Oh, okay.
- 11:59Oh my God.
- 12:00So Jonah Hill's ex-girlfriend Sarah Brady released these text messages between the two of them recently.
- 12:06That just kind of breaks down what a controlling douche.
- 12:09She was in their relationship.
- 12:11She's a model and a surfer.
- 12:13And in his text messages, he's telling her that she has to delete every picture of herself
- 12:17wearing a bathing suit of her surfing, of her modeling, and that he doesn't want her spending time
- 12:23with like the women with, I don't know, from her wild recent past or something.
- 12:30And ladies and gentlemen, if anybody tries to like therapy talk you, like, I'm just setting my boundaries.
- 12:39Yeah, the unstable women from her wild recent past.
- 12:42No.
- 12:43No, those aren't boundaries. That's him being controlling and that's a narcissist and run away.
- 12:50It's crazy.
- 12:51One of my favorite comedians, Claire Parker, they do a podcast as well.
- 12:55But she's like been saying this since the like the last two years.
- 12:58She's like, we need to stop letting men go to therapy because they're not using it to get better.
- 13:04They're using it to get stronger.
- 13:06And like more manipulative.
- 13:08And I think it's so funny because the second all this drop, she like clipped to a piece of it and was like, I told her I love this.
- 13:16But it's something about this on her Instagram the other day.
- 13:20She's like, if you're going to therapy just so you can learn therapy buzzwords to weaponize them against other people,
- 13:27then you're not actually doing the work of going to therapy.
- 13:30You're just, I don't know, being a fake ally.
- 13:33Yeah, yeah. And if you're just going there to have someone like hear your side of the story and not like work through things or with a goal.
- 13:41Like, hey, hear the things that I'm like trying to actively improve.
- 13:44It can, it can feel like a sounding board.
- 13:47And I'm sure, you know, I mean therapists are people too, right?
- 13:51Like celebrities have this insane power over everyone.
- 13:55And so it's very interesting.
- 13:58It is interesting. So I don't know that shit. It's just been cracking me up for days.
- 14:03Shout out to all the wild and stable women from my recent past.
- 14:06Honestly, love you guys.
- 14:08Recent past being this last weekend when we all like took a million shots together.
- 14:14You guys are the real MVP is speaking of taking a million shots.
- 14:19Sean and I posted this review of drink 818 on our Instagram and the social media manager for 818 must have just been liking it in a, in a Tizzy before she actually like listen to the video.
- 14:35Because I say let's taste the cultural appropriation.
- 14:39I'm like, let's say this white bitch can make a good tequila and then Nicole sex.
- 14:43So she's like, 818 liked it. Wait, never mind. They unlike.
- 14:49So we are never getting a PR box ever.
- 14:54No, right.
- 14:56But I got blocked.
- 14:58It got lost in the mail. It has to be on its way.
- 15:01We we're going to try other ones. Hopefully our our man George Clooney doesn't do us as dirty.
- 15:07So I need some like actual like people from the Latinx community to like have some tequila to try.
- 15:15I don't want to try anymore.
- 15:17Like cultural preparation tequila.
- 15:20I was just swear every famous person needs either coming out with a alcoholic drink or an energy drink because now Kim Kardashian just came out with an energy drink.
- 15:31Oh my god. And Jake Paul I believe is getting like the Paul brothers. I'm not sure if it's Jake or I don't know the ones between the two of them either.
- 15:40They're getting slammed for how much energy is put into their drink.
- 15:43I think one energy drink. There's has the amount of caffeine of six coaks.
- 15:47Jesus Christ. Yeah. And they don't know. It's totally fine. And I'm like, that is not okay.
- 15:52It's not okay.
- 15:54Yeah. I'm like, either every celebrity either has alcohol or an energy drink. So I'm like, okay, well, I guess that's the new thing nowadays.
- 16:02Dude, let's do. Okay. So we're going to do the celebrity taste test thing. And I know we've talked about it before.
- 16:08And Olivia and I will try all the booze and Nicole, you can try all the energy drinks.
- 16:13I'm down for that.
- 16:15We have to do it like 11 a.m.
- 16:20So I'm not bouncing off the walls like when I'm trying to go to sleep.
- 16:24The day before we all of us have to just chug water. We need to eat lots of vegetables and like chug water and just go into it is healthy and sober as we can.
- 16:33And then we have to record it obviously. So we're doing this for our fans.
- 16:39Order 20 pizzas the day of and just show pizzas in our mouth.
- 16:44Yeah, that later that day after we turn off the camera, we're going to carload absolutely. We're going to get some water and a.
- 16:51That's typically my go to.
- 16:53That's typically my go to. I felt like I was just like the pizza lady the Saturday.
- 16:57It was our friends birthday party and we were down at the pool and I've made burgers and stuff and then we ran out of that.
- 17:03And then I just like went upstairs made a pizza came down with it. Went upstairs made another pizza.
- 17:08Just kept giving out pizza everywhere. It's like, what am I doing right now?
- 17:12You made a burger and I haven't stopped thinking about it for days. It was just so cheesy and like I did put a lot of cheese on it though.
- 17:19It was really good.
- 17:21Yeah.
- 17:22Oh my god. And then I've been into just like cooking shows for the past two weeks too.
- 17:27Andrew and I are obsessed with next level chef. It's this like Gordon Ramsey show.
- 17:32And I'm usually a little if young Gordon Ramsey just because he's a little too mean.
- 17:37I don't know. If I watch a cooking show I want it to be like great British baking show where they're all just really nice to each other.
- 17:44And that looks delightful. Do you need some cream? You can use some of mine.
- 17:49And then Gordon Ramsey is just like, what the fuck is this? This looks like diarrhea.
- 17:55I would fry. I don't think I can handle myself around Gordon Ramsey.
- 18:00It enters like, yeah, I need some meanness. I need people to cry on television. So I watch next level chef.
- 18:07And he actually feels like he's toned down the meanness a little bit. He's definitely like, he feels like he's old.
- 18:14He's an old grandpa now.
- 18:17Yeah, but like still kind of daddy. I go back and forth a lot on whether or not he's fuckable.
- 18:23But also I feel like he'd scream at me the entire time but not in a good way.
- 18:26You call that a blow job. This is awful.
- 18:32I think I'm like, I think that's probably why I would do it.
- 18:36You're into a punishment thing. Tell me how bad it is.
- 18:41And that's why you go to therapy with the goal.
- 18:46Oh my gosh, speaking of hot ones, Nicole, I know you really like hot ones.
- 18:50His is probably one of my favorite ones. You call these fucking chicken wings. Can I sponsor your chicken wings next time?
- 18:59It was like a couple years ago and I was watching newer ones.
- 19:03And I think I think he actually did it because their chicken wings are much bigger now.
- 19:09Some of the chicken wings are really bad. They're like little dinky things. I'm like, that is not it.
- 19:14I need a chicken wing. I need that shit to be like, yeah.
- 19:18Like I want the juicy meat too. It's incredible.
- 19:22If it's incredibly hot sauce and then it's a dry ass piece of chicken, like what?
- 19:28No. No, if I'm going to eat the bomb, it needs to be on a juicy piece of chicken.
- 19:33Let's talk more about food.
- 19:37We need to get off the topic of food and how hungry we are.
- 19:45So we kind of been on the topic of murders, killers, true crime.
- 19:57I feel like today with our conversation.
- 20:01So what I want to continue with our conversation is murder or true crime in general.
- 20:07Murder.
- 20:09Murder.
- 20:11Murder most foul.
- 20:16Because you know, spooky season is upon us.
- 20:20I know the minute you want to use it over.
- 20:23Yes, I agree. The minute for the July is over, even before the July.
- 20:26I don't care.
- 20:27It's spooky season baby.
- 20:29The stores are putting out all of their Halloween decorations.
- 20:32You know, I am all about them.
- 20:34Me too.
- 20:36And my birthday is on October, Friday, the 13th this year.
- 20:39I'm just so excited.
- 20:42So that's my spooky era.
- 20:45So with that, let's go ahead and talk about our favorite murder documentary or documentary.
- 20:51We can have more than one if you want.
- 20:53But I just want to hear yours because I'm a true crime junkie.
- 20:57So tell me some that maybe I haven't watched yet that I can watch and for the viewers as well and just get into it.
- 21:04I love that.
- 21:06Okay.
- 21:09I am like one of those people who is just like really, really bad at a favorite.
- 21:12So I'm probably gonna end up saying like 15 million of this.
- 21:16But just gonna put that out there.
- 21:17Everyone's gonna be like, she said that was her favorite.
- 21:19They're all my favorite children.
- 21:22So I don't know if this person technically qualifies as a serial killer.
- 21:30But they have, I mean, I think three qualifies.
- 21:34We're gonna say three qualifies.
- 21:36But it is absolutely my favorite documentary, probably of HBO's.
- 21:42And it's called The Jinks.
- 21:44So I don't know if you guys have ever seen this.
- 21:46It is about Robert Durst.
- 21:48He's an American real estate air.
- 21:50Think kind of like the Trump family, but more successful.
- 21:56One of the biggest real estate owners in New York.
- 22:01They own a lot of Manhattan.
- 22:03And so they're incredibly successful.
- 22:05And so Robert Durst is the first son of Seymour Durst.
- 22:11And initially he was supposed to inherit the family business and all this stuff.
- 22:17And it ends up going to the, his younger brother.
- 22:23And so he's always just kind of in like the black sheep, this outcast.
- 22:27People have always kind of wondered why, like what's his story?
- 22:32Well, in like 1982, his wife goes missing and was last seen at their New York apartment high rise.
- 22:39Her whole family thinks that it is Robert Durst, right?
- 22:44Mm-hmm.
- 22:45And they never catch him for it.
- 22:47And then there's this movie that's created.
- 22:49It's called All Good Things.
- 22:51It's by Andrew Jurekki.
- 22:53It has Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst.
- 22:56And it's about the story of his wife going missing.
- 22:59And Kirsten Dunst is his wife and then Ryan Gosling is playing Robert Durst, right?
- 23:04I said this movie, right?
- 23:06And so it's really, really good.
- 23:08It's an amazing movie.
- 23:10But what's crazier is so after this movie comes out, Robert Durst contacts the director, Andrew Jurekki.
- 23:18And says, I've been asked to do a million interviews.
- 23:23I've said no to all of them.
- 23:24You're the only person who understands Robert Durst.
- 23:29And I want you to make a documentary about me.
- 23:32And so if you've seen the movie All Good Things, you know that he is tried for killing a man in Galveston as well.
- 23:40He was pretending to be a woman, a mute woman in her 80s.
- 23:45Let's get to see.
- 23:46Doesn't he dress up like a woman at some point in that movie?
- 23:49Yes.
- 23:50And it's a freaking crazy story.
- 23:52But he gets off for murder because it's Texas and he gets self-defense.
- 23:56But he does get a proper disposal of a body.
- 24:00But because he had spent so much time in jail, they let him go or whatever.
- 24:04So he really just kind of like gets out of jail.
- 24:06So he starts freaking making this documentary.
- 24:10And I don't want to ruin the end of it.
- 24:12But he's now in jail because of the stocky battery.
- 24:16Because of the documentary.
- 24:18Dang dude.
- 24:20It's like one of the craziest stories in the world.
- 24:23Yeah.
- 24:24Yeah.
- 24:25So he thinks that his mic is off.
- 24:28And it's not.
- 24:29And so they use it to convict him.
- 24:32And he like kid vases.
- 24:34Yeah.
- 24:35Dang.
- 24:36Okay.
- 24:37I need to watch this.
- 24:38It's literally the one of the best tree crime documentaries ever.
- 24:41And you know, talk a lot about like ethical, old, true crime.
- 24:45And like I think it's such a nuanced conversation.
- 24:50But one is that you don't really do get justice for.
- 24:54There's a bunch of other people that were also killed.
- 24:57Or one of the person who was killed was processed.
- 24:59And it's like, that's how you actually get justice for a lot of these people.
- 25:04I agree.
- 25:05Unfortunately, it gets done well.
- 25:06If it's done.
- 25:07That's why I like unsolved mysteries a lot.
- 25:10Because the amount of like murders and crimes that they have solved just by people watching it.
- 25:17And then calling in, it's incredible.
- 25:20And it's entertainment.
- 25:21So we watch it for the dramatizations and to all kind of speculate.
- 25:25But there's somebody out there who somebody knows something.
- 25:29I think that's another true crime podcast.
- 25:31That's called somebody knows something.
- 25:33And they just, you know, there's somebody out there.
- 25:35And they can call in and I like it when the entertainment can come to a conclusion.
- 25:39That's nice.
- 25:40Hell yeah.
- 25:41What about you Nicole?
- 25:42One of my favorites is the Chris Watts.
- 25:47Confessions of a killer.
- 25:49Oh, yeah.
- 25:50And I believe it was on lifetime.
- 25:54The one I saw.
- 25:55I know there's like multiple different ones.
- 25:58You can stream that one on Netflix now.
- 26:02Okay.
- 26:03Cool.
- 26:04This one is just, it breaks your heartstrings.
- 26:07It is so sad.
- 26:08If you don't know the story of Chris Watts, he killed his wife, two daughters, an unborn son,
- 26:16his wife, who's pregnant with their son.
- 26:18And I believe she and who is his wife was considered missing by her best friend Nicole.
- 26:26And Nicole went over to the house and Chris was home and everything.
- 26:31And she and was not there.
- 26:33And the daughters weren't there.
- 26:36And she found a suspicious.
- 26:37So she called the cops and was like, hey, she and not home, but her cars here.
- 26:42So there's just something not right.
- 26:44She's normal home.
- 26:45So the cops came.
- 26:46The cops investigated the house.
- 26:47They found her phone in between the couch cushions.
- 26:50They found her purse at home.
- 26:53They later found that Chris was telling lies at the house.
- 26:57Like he was cooperating with police and then he wasn't cooperating with the police.
- 27:00Yeah.
- 27:01They later found out that he ended up murdering them.
- 27:04And the way he killed them is absolutely insane.
- 27:08I know he worked out like a factory kind of thing.
- 27:11I don't know what it was actually called, but it was a construction site.
- 27:15Yeah.
- 27:16There's these little poles, like literally the size of my hands making a circle.
- 27:21Listeners, if you obviously can't see me right now, but if you just put your hands together and make a circle,
- 27:27that's probably the size of what I'm talking about.
- 27:30He literally put his kids' bodies in that big of a circle and just squeeze their bodies down this small to kill them.
- 27:37I believe they were dead at the time.
- 27:39I'm not too sure on that.
- 27:40Oh my God.
- 27:42He squeezed their dead bodies in a small tube like that.
- 27:46And they were gone.
- 27:47And I literally just got you all saying that.
- 27:50Yeah.
- 27:51So did I.
- 27:52That's disgusting.
- 27:53She was having, they were having a real problem.
- 27:56She knew that he was cheating, but didn't really know 100% sure.
- 27:59He was cheating on her with a girl named Nicole, which ironically was her best friend.
- 28:03That's gonna say it wasn't the best friend.
- 28:05It was a woman named Nicole Kessinger who works with them at the same site.
- 28:12Big fat alleged here, allegedly, allegedly.
- 28:16So she is very interesting.
- 28:19The documentary doesn't really go into her involvement, but there is a big part of it where he was on the phone with her.
- 28:28She had a lot of that morning, what spent hours, and she's like claiming that these calls didn't happen in the cops collar on it and all this stuff.
- 28:36And she is really weirdly connected to this cult called Opus Day as well.
- 28:44And they're very like satanicky, creepy.
- 28:48So like she's got a lot of stuff going on.
- 28:50But I don't trust that girlfriend.
- 28:52I think she helped.
- 28:53And I think that man is a monster.
- 28:56She is, dude.
- 28:58Okay, one more time. What's this documentary called?
- 29:00It is called Chris Watts Confessions of a Killer.
- 29:04And in the documentary, they show the actual site of where he put their bodies.
- 29:11Oh, we know you love that shit.
- 29:13Yeah, obviously it's like super sad, but yeah, but it's so see the actual places where it happened.
- 29:21Yeah, and they were in $450,000 worth of debt.
- 29:26So yeah, they were just having struggles and she ended up getting a job and like they were able to get through it and see, yeah, I don't know what was going on.
- 29:35There was had that he had to kill his kids as well.
- 29:38I just, I don't know.
- 29:39I really don't know how to go through people's heads that they have to kill children.
- 29:43I mean, obviously I don't know how it has to go through your head to kill your wife or just any human being, but children.
- 29:48You kill your entire family like that. Something is snapped inside of you.
- 29:52Yeah.
- 29:53And it's just you, you're going all in.
- 29:55You're just committing to the entire abluration of your family.
- 29:58Well, what's so messed up about him too is once he knew like he was fully caught.
- 30:03He said that she killed the kids and an anger he killed her.
- 30:09Oh, my God.
- 30:10And everyone goes like, "True.
- 30:11There is no way she would harm a single hair on any of those babies."
- 30:16Yeah.
- 30:17Scom, scum, scum, scum, scum.
- 30:19Mm-hmm.
- 30:20And people like find him good looking.
- 30:21Like he's another like Ted Bundy kind.
- 30:22That makes me so much positive and stuff.
- 30:26So it's just, yeah.
- 30:27Mm-hmm.
- 30:28I was listening to an episode recently of Wine and Crime Podcast, which I love.
- 30:33And they were talking about the phenomenon of women who fall in love with like serial killers and write them letters from prison and stuff.
- 30:40And part of it is just that like you know that he is locked down in one place.
- 30:47So he's not going out and seeing other women.
- 30:49He's not cheating on you.
- 30:51And you feel, you feel needed finally.
- 30:54Like there's somebody there who needs you because you're the only one there there for them.
- 31:00You're the only one helping them.
- 31:01It's so finally you're like, "Here's a man who really truly needs me."
- 31:06And I don't know.
- 31:07It's psychological like whoops, you people jump through to fall in love with serial killers or think that they're attractive like that.
- 31:14And that's just nuts.
- 31:16Mm-hmm.
- 31:17Mm-hmm.
- 31:18Yeah. I mean if those people aren't going to the other side while they're there.
- 31:22Yeah.
- 31:23Yeah.
- 31:24Dude, right?
- 31:25Gosh, I don't know if I have like a favorite one.
- 31:26I listen to a lot more of like true crime podcasts than watch documentaries.
- 31:30So I listen to my favorite murder.
- 31:33And then I started from the very beginning.
- 31:36And now I'm through like 300, 300 episodes of "Wine and Crime" podcast.
- 31:41I love it so much.
- 31:43So definitely going to pop that and suggest people listen to that when they're not listening to pop culture junkies obviously.
- 31:49But a documentary that I recently watched on Netflix is called The Hatchet, "Wielding Hitchhiker."
- 31:56Have you guys heard of this at all?
- 31:58Okay.
- 31:59Yes. So it came out in 2023.
- 32:03Yes. And it is about this Hitchhiker named Caleb McGilvery.
- 32:08He goes by Kai.
- 32:10In 2013, he goes completely viral after he's involved in like a car accident where the driver of the car is claiming to be Jesus Christ himself and is kind of going through like a psychiatric episode.
- 32:27Kai gets out in or of his car to defend this woman and takes out a hatchet that he had in his backpack because he was an unhoused person at the time traveling around.
- 32:39And later there is and he defends this woman saves her knocks the guy out with a hatchet.
- 32:45So a local Fox affiliate shows up to cover the scene and interviews Kai right there on the spot.
- 32:51And he says the quote, "Smash, smash, smash, smash."
- 32:57And this clip just goes viral, right?
- 33:01He's on the Jimmy Camel show.
- 33:04He's on Inside Edition.
- 33:06I was watching this documentary and the amount of views this video got was just insane.
- 33:10Like he is just a viral overnight sensation.
- 33:13He's getting interviews left and right.
- 33:15People are pitching him his own TV show.
- 33:18They want him to do like a pop culture review show.
- 33:23But this guy on one hand, okay, it comes out that he spoiler alert murders somebody.
- 33:33And we'll get to that in a minute.
- 33:35But everything that leads up to it, instead of kind of giving this guy psychiatric care, which he obviously needed,
- 33:42or any kind of housing support medical care.
- 33:46Living on the streets, he obviously needs some kind of, I don't know, somebody to talk to, somebody who really cares about him.
- 33:54It kind of seems like everybody's exploiting him for money because he went so viral with this news clip, right?
- 34:00So he is kind of basking in the quote unquote fame of being a viral sensation.
- 34:08So a couple months later, he's arrested for murder charges after he's kind of couch surfing at this point.
- 34:14Because like I said, nobody is really giving him housing support.
- 34:18And he at the time is staying with this man named Joseph McAlphy.
- 34:24And he is arrested for the murder of said man.
- 34:28He says that McAlphy trigger warning tried to rape him, take advantage of him, and that he fought back in self defense.
- 34:37All of the evidence pointed towards Kai just obliterating this man, just salottering him in his house, right?
- 34:45And then it quote comes out from Kai that says, quote, "Do you know how many hot chicks never mind?
- 34:52Even if I was gay, do you know how many hot guys wanted to fuck me after that shit in California, the viral video?
- 34:59I'm not even being vain. It's just a fact. Like no offense.
- 35:03But he was not a looker talking about the guy that he murdered.
- 35:07I can hear him saying excuse me, he was not a looker, David.
- 35:11Which is why everybody was like, oh he couldn't have done it. It's just Kai looking at him.
- 35:17He wouldn't hurt a flea. Okay, well he did fight a guy with a hatchet.
- 35:21And brutally like a tag someone.
- 35:25And if you, I throughout the documentary, they kind of talk about other times that he's kind of had violent tendencies and shown that he can be a little unstable.
- 35:35But yeah, fans raised a legal fund for him saying that it had to have been self defense because it's Kai.
- 35:43He took the stand in his own defense was super competitive during cross examination, had an outburst, the judge and Jerry found him guilty of first degree murder.
- 35:55He is in prison for 57 years. So I still use that gift sometimes and I feel bad.
- 36:04Smush, smush, so much.
- 36:08Speaking of people who tried to defend themselves, that Ted Bundy documentary, it's really, really good as well.
- 36:14The one on Netflix is great, they talk a lot about it. But there's one on Amazon.
- 36:19That is done from the perspective of his ex girlfriend, the one that actually ended up turning him in and it was.
- 36:28Of Ted Bundy's ex girlfriend.
- 36:30And it's a little bit more focused on the perspective of victims, how he was conniving and it's called Ted Bundy falling for a killer.
- 36:44So it's really, really interesting. The women still alive.
- 36:47If you saw the movie with Zach Efron that they did about Ted Bundy, it's the one that, oh my god, I almost just called her Emily in Paris.
- 36:56Really Collins plays that Emily from Paris plays, that was a Collins plays.
- 37:03And it's just, it's, it's a little bit more like focused on the women and the story of Elizabeth Kendall.
- 37:10So I would definitely recommend that one as well.
- 37:14I know I mentioned it a couple episodes ago, but love and death on HBO is amazing.
- 37:19It's about Candy Montgomery murdering her lover's wife Betty with an axe.
- 37:26Lots of minor with hatchets and axes. And she, we're keeps saying spoiler alert, but whatever, these are all from like the 80s and shit.
- 37:35She ends up getting off on that one on self defense, but it's just interesting to see how they get there and how many times she.
- 37:44And then she acts to this woman to death and just kind of, you know, her snapping and stuff.
- 37:49So definitely going to pop that one too. And then finally, my last one is the staircase.
- 37:56So good.
- 37:58Dude, right. Okay. So there is a show and it's based on the documentary, which is based on, I mean, a book and just all sorts of, you know, things that happened with this trial.
- 38:07But it's about Michael Peterson getting convicted for killing his wife Kathleen Peterson.
- 38:14He's saying that she fell down a flight of stairs, but it's I believe he absolutely killed her.
- 38:22And then there's a theory called owl theory that comes out that maybe there's an owl that flew in the window and murdered her.
- 38:29Yeah, but that part's crazy.
- 38:31My husband and I reference a lot, which is probably kind of fucked up where we're like, no one will know.
- 38:36If I just ended you right now, owl theory.
- 38:39Yeah. So too funny things.
- 38:42First of all, I left that documentary. I've been like, he didn't do it.
- 38:47Really? I've eaten it.
- 38:49So I, but the HBO shows shows a very different angle of it.
- 38:54Yeah.
- 38:55What is interesting, though, is so the producer and like the main editor of that documentary, like falls in love with Michael Peterson.
- 39:05Yes. And that's why it seems so.
- 39:08Like, it's very, very biased.
- 39:11Yeah.
- 39:12But also at the same time, like the way a bisexual man was treated, like there was, like it's such an interesting layered frickin case where there's all these different things to it.
- 39:24But speaking of an owl, I can't remember the name of the case, but there is this case that was like reopened.
- 39:33And like they were able to find kind of like new evidence for it.
- 39:36It didn't stand in court, but this guy's parrot ends up repeating his murder back over and over and over again.
- 39:47What? That just sounds like season two of only murders in the building.
- 39:51No, it is literally a real story.
- 39:54And so this parrot, like, is like repeating it and it's doing the two different voices of the person where he's like, don't show.
- 40:02And it's crazy.
- 40:04But yeah, so those are the, that's what came to mind immediately.
- 40:08Murderous birds.
- 40:09Or birds who help out.
- 40:11Birds who help out.
- 40:12Yeah.
- 40:13Yeah.
- 40:14I don't know.
- 40:15This is good stuff, you guys.
- 40:16I don't know.
- 40:17It does come back to that conversation.
- 40:21If we listen to true crime, or you kind of like aiding, or I mean, is it problematic to be into true crime?
- 40:28Or I don't know. Why do we find so much, is it exploitative to be interested in true crime?
- 40:35To the amount that people are to like relive in these people's terror and sadness.
- 40:42And then we all find kind of joy out of it.
- 40:44But I don't know.
- 40:45Is it, is it messed up or is it, do you think it's okay?
- 40:49I think there's a really large conversation around ethical true crime, right?
- 40:53How do you consume it?
- 40:54We've talked about cases that have been solved.
- 40:57I think it really goes to, is the family okay with it?
- 41:02Yeah.
- 41:03Like the survivors, or the survivors as a whole, are they okay with it?
- 41:07Are we glamourizing?
- 41:08Yeah.
- 41:09I'm telling her.
- 41:10Yeah.
- 41:11Like that was a big criticism of the Ted Bundy Netflix documentary.
- 41:14It was like, you really didn't talk about these 30 women who lost their lives.
- 41:19And the family wasn't okay with that show, right?
- 41:22They weren't.
- 41:23Yeah.
- 41:24So they weren't really involved.
- 41:25They weren't as contacted.
- 41:26They kind of like show some of these women for like less than 10 seconds.
- 41:31And so I think it really comes to that.
- 41:34But I mean, like, you know, with so many podcasts, like if Tenderfoot TV,
- 41:38they're a big production network, pain Lindsay, like they've solved a ton of crime
- 41:45and helped police get to these things.
- 41:47And unfortunately there are so many unsolved murders.
- 41:50There are so many underfunded cold case departments.
- 41:54And they don't have the resources to go back and just test this DNA until there is a compelling reason
- 42:02where they have a narrative that they can tell to a judge.
- 42:05They can sign off.
- 42:06So I think there are ways to do it.
- 42:09Unfortunately, like I look at like Idaho for that just happened.
- 42:14Like it can get very, very bad.
- 42:16People were harassed.
- 42:18Like one of the girls had a boyfriend and they had just broken up.
- 42:21And people were harassing this man.
- 42:24And like he just went through an immense trauma and all this stuff.
- 42:28And so I think people who like to consume true crime,
- 42:33come at it from a place of what I want to help, especially in active investigations
- 42:39or oh, I want to know what I can avoid, especially as women.
- 42:43And you know, what steps can I take?
- 42:45Don't get sexy and don't get murdered.
- 42:47Yeah.
- 42:48Well, yeah, it's crazy.
- 42:50Ted Bunny is like 30 victims.
- 42:52Like I look exactly like them, right?
- 42:54And so it's like there's this like morbid fascination of like, how do I avoid it?
- 42:59But like you'll you'll never be able to.
- 43:01Yeah.
- 43:02And there's not the victims' fault ever if anything happens to them.
- 43:06I agree.
- 43:07Like it's all just kind of that fine line between with we make sure that we center the victim in these things.
- 43:11We remember they were real people.
- 43:13And if people it's important to understand and realize that
- 43:17the majority of victims in crimes and murders like this are women and they're women of color a lot of the times.
- 43:23And when these crimes happen to women of color,
- 43:26there aren't as many resources put into solving them and to finding the people who committed them.
- 43:31We see that in the news sometimes if a white woman is missing, you know,
- 43:35everybody in their mom is out looking for her.
- 43:37But if we bring attention to these cases of missing Indigenous murdered women,
- 43:41just trans people who are missing and facing violent crimes,
- 43:45then the more we talk about it, it kind of brings it to the forefront.
- 43:48So I can see that too when it comes to consuming true crime.
- 43:51Yeah.
- 43:52Absolutely.
- 43:53Well, everybody, listen to it.
- 43:54Stand up the woods.
- 43:55Don't talk to strangers.
- 43:56Stay sexy and don't get murdered.
- 43:58And don't sue us for using that tagline.
- 44:00There you go.
- 44:01So sexy and don't get murdered.
- 44:04We love you.
- 44:05We love you.
- 44:06I do want to give like a dishonorory mention.
- 44:10Yes.
- 44:11To the John Wayne Gacy Devlin disguise on peacock.
- 44:16And it's not like a documentary.
- 44:18It's actually a sit down interview with him.
- 44:21Yeah, I know.
- 44:23That's why it's a dishonorory.
- 44:24I think those are so interesting though.
- 44:27It is because I think this is the only one he ever did to where he sat down
- 44:32and interviewed with someone about his stuff like in everything.
- 44:37Is he remorseful at all?
- 44:39Yeah, he seems to be.
- 44:41I don't really know.
- 44:42I mean, yeah.
- 44:44He's the clown killer, right?
- 44:46Yeah.
- 44:47Yeah.
- 44:48Yeah.
- 44:49Yeah.
- 44:50He's sorry.
- 44:51He got arrested or sorry that he killed about people.
- 44:52Exactly.
- 44:53Definitely.
- 44:54I got arrested.
- 44:55What does he say?
- 44:56I mean, he's the one that led the police to where the first body was found.
- 45:00Yeah.
- 45:01But exactly.
- 45:02I mean, he killed like 33 kids.
- 45:04So.
- 45:05Yeah, dressing up as a clown and like going to kids birthday parties and shit, right?
- 45:08Yeah.
- 45:09Oh man.
- 45:10Oh.
- 45:11Oh.
- 45:12Creep.
- 45:13Interesting fact.
- 45:14Not a fun fact.
- 45:15It's again about murder.
- 45:16It's an unfun fact.
- 45:17When I lived in Chicago, I lived in that county, Cook County, and where you see at your birthday party?
- 45:27Definitely.
- 45:28We're in the same age range.
- 45:30I lived in this age too.
- 45:31I was going to say, "It's like a misdefinity."
- 45:33So, yeah.
- 45:34Nicole and I have the same morbid obsessions before that.
- 45:38And then another fun one is when I left Chicago, I lived in Austin as well and I lived in Travis
- 45:46County, which is where the Texas Shainsaw Massacre happened.
- 45:50Nope.
- 45:51Nope.
- 45:52So, yeah, that movie came out when I was like in fifth grade, the Jessica Biel one.
- 45:57But I'm to Jessica Biel, not to the movie.
- 46:00The same movie.
- 46:04But, no, I was shitting my pants.
- 46:06Oh my God.
- 46:07It freaked me out so much.
- 46:09But I love that movie.
- 46:11I think of those things and I'm like, "No one are so demented.
- 46:14I grew up where serial killers were.
- 46:16There's something in the soil."
- 46:17There's something in the water.
- 46:19Don't worry.
- 46:20I'm not doing murder.
- 46:22I'm not doing murder.
- 46:23Okay.
- 46:24I just like to talk about it.
- 46:26I'm not going to do it.
- 46:27I'm just thinking about it.
- 46:28I'm just thinking.
- 46:29I'm gonna have a Robert Jers moment and confess to it all here.
- 46:36Next time I bet you're placing, you're like, you can just sleep on the couch, it's fine.
- 46:40No, no, just sleep in bed with me.
- 46:42Now, I'll be like, I don't know.
- 46:44You're just gonna go.
- 46:46No, no.
- 46:47We all know if I shut my door, you would just charge in and be like, I got it.
- 46:53I get a sliver to sleep with the bad too.
- 46:55Oh, is that it?
- 46:56No if it's okay.
- 46:57It's okay.
- 46:58I don't want to call you.
- 47:00I'll call you.
- 47:02I'll call you.
- 47:03I'll call you.
- 47:05I'll call you.
- 47:06I'll call you.
- 47:07Dude, you fade, man.
- 47:08I'll be an easy murder victim.
- 47:09Yeah, man take away is from the podcast.
- 47:11If you wanna win Nicole's heart, make her potatoes, also just feed Sean at anything and she'll
- 47:17let you murder her.
- 47:18Absolutely.
- 47:19I will die for cheese.
- 47:21Especially if it's like soft, stinky cheese.
- 47:24Actually, please don't kill me.
- 47:26I'm just so hungry.
- 47:27I'm just like, I can do anything for cheese.
- 47:29Well, on that note, I hope we all go make our death remeals without the death and have
- 47:37the best night.
