- 0:22Speaker 1: Welcome to Revealing Wholeness podcast dedicated to revealing the profound
- 0:26Speaker 1: connections between body, mind, and spirit, where we believe that
- 0:29Speaker 1: true wellness arises from addressing the root causes of our
- 0:32Speaker 1: health challenges, not just masking the symptoms. Here we dive
- 0:35Speaker 1: deep into how holistic approaches such as advanced chiropractic care,
- 0:39Speaker 1: personalized nutrition, and natural healing practices can transform your life.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Now Here is doctor Troy.
- 0:54Speaker 3: Hello and welcome. I'm doctor Troy. This particular podcast is
- 0:58Speaker 3: on excessive iron. I had a listener on our podcast
- 1:04Speaker 3: ask the question what do we do with high iron?
- 1:08Speaker 3: And we're going to explore those ideas. But instead of
- 1:13Speaker 3: just simply giving you ideas to do, there are many
- 1:17Speaker 3: questions that one has when it comes to iron. It's
- 1:20Speaker 3: not just an iron issue, because there may be serum iron,
- 1:23Speaker 3: which serum means blood, So what kind of iron is
- 1:26Speaker 3: in the blood, and if that's high, then we know
- 1:30Speaker 3: that all right, we are definitely not getting rid of
- 1:34Speaker 3: iron in the blood, which can be a copper deficiency,
- 1:37Speaker 3: can be a zinc deficiency, can be a molybdenum deficiency.
- 1:42Speaker 3: And then there's also ferratin. Ferretin is stored iron. So
- 1:47Speaker 3: if we have a lot of ferratin in the blood too,
- 1:50Speaker 3: or that we have this high ferretin level, we now
- 1:54Speaker 3: know that we are converting serum iron into stored iron.
- 1:58Speaker 3: But stored iron and tissues can cause all kinds of issues.
- 2:02Speaker 3: So just iron excess in the blood, we would say, well,
- 2:07Speaker 3: why don't we just go give blood? And of course
- 2:10Speaker 3: that would be the best thing to do, because people
- 2:12Speaker 3: who need blood need your high iron in your blood.
- 2:16Speaker 3: It's not like it's a bad thing for somebody who
- 2:18Speaker 3: needs a transfusion, it actually would be helpful. However, there
- 2:22Speaker 3: are other things that they look for in a blood transfusion,
- 2:26Speaker 3: and so they may still reject your blood. And in
- 2:28Speaker 3: that case, I've done podcasts talking about hemochromatosis before where
- 2:32Speaker 3: we say, hey, just go give blood and if they
- 2:35Speaker 3: will reject it, then you tell them to go ahead
- 2:38Speaker 3: and take the blood and dump it, and they'll charge
- 2:40Speaker 3: it for that, which is fine. You'd rather start feeling
- 2:43Speaker 3: better anyways, because excess iron can do all kinds of things.
- 2:47Speaker 3: So one of the things we would want to make
- 2:49Speaker 3: sure is that you're not cooking in high iron pots
- 2:52Speaker 3: and pans like cast iron. So you may want to
- 2:56Speaker 3: at least control that. If you're taking supplements, you may
- 2:59Speaker 3: want to look and see how much iron is in
- 3:02Speaker 3: your supplements, how much spinach are you in fact doing,
- 3:06Speaker 3: how much liver do you eat? Now? The rub here
- 3:11Speaker 3: is that poor liver function is often associated with a
- 3:15Speaker 3: high iron or inability to get rid of it, and
- 3:18Speaker 3: you'll see authors even say that it's almost impossible to
- 3:22Speaker 3: get rid of iron. I don't know that that's really likely. However,
- 3:27Speaker 3: it is possible that it could even be a molybdenum deficiency,
- 3:31Speaker 3: because molybdenum runs detoxification processes in the body. In fact,
- 3:36Speaker 3: the kidneys want a fair amount of mobum molybdinum. Now
- 3:41Speaker 3: it could be that let's say we have low ferratin
- 3:45Speaker 3: and we have high serum iron. Well, you're just not
- 3:48Speaker 3: converting your serum iron into ferratin. Or stored iron, And
- 3:52Speaker 3: so we could be looking at a B six B
- 3:54Speaker 3: twelve foliate, copper and zinc deficiency as well as molybdenum.
- 4:00Speaker 3: And you think, well, but molybdenum you said would decreased iron. Well,
- 4:05Speaker 3: just because when it's high it does tend to run
- 4:08Speaker 3: detox processes, it also is used in the other direction,
- 4:11Speaker 3: and you'll often find minerals controlling the forward and reverse
- 4:17Speaker 3: of enzyme processes, so that's not unusual. Other things that
- 4:22Speaker 3: you might experience with high iron over long periods of
- 4:27Speaker 3: time are things like heart disease. You might have other
- 4:31Speaker 3: types of hemolytic anemias, you might have degenerative or neurodegenerative conditions,
- 4:37Speaker 3: and you can have gouty arthritis. Now in extreme cases,
- 4:40Speaker 3: I suppose we could talk about cancer being part of
- 4:43Speaker 3: the issue when it comes to high iron for long
- 4:47Speaker 3: periods of time. Now, ferretin, What do we do if
- 4:50Speaker 3: our stored iron is high in the form of ferratin,
- 4:54Speaker 3: and let's say that your sere iron is within normal levels.
- 4:59Speaker 3: Well over time, high ferretin can cause cardiovascular disease and
- 5:05Speaker 3: it can be difficult on tissues to have a lot
- 5:10Speaker 3: of stored iron that's where the real damage comes from,
- 5:13Speaker 3: and so we can see things like cancer and some
- 5:17Speaker 3: infections with high ferratin or stored iron. Alcoholism will cause
- 5:23Speaker 3: this too because it depletes B vitamins and we can't
- 5:27Speaker 3: reverse the stored iron into the serem iron and get
- 5:30Speaker 3: rid of it, and so B vitamins become a big deal.
- 5:34Speaker 3: When we want to try to shed excess iron and ferretin,
- 5:39Speaker 3: we could have some liver and kidney disease as well
- 5:42Speaker 3: as acne are all indicators of high ferratin. And again,
- 5:45Speaker 3: acne is typically a vitamin A and a zinc deficiency,
- 5:49Speaker 3: and you know, increased iron will just magnify it. So
- 5:54Speaker 3: with that, those are kind of some of the ideas
- 5:57Speaker 3: when it comes to how did we get here and
- 5:59Speaker 3: what are some of the symptoms of these higher things.
- 6:02Speaker 3: Now again we talk about we want to make sure
- 6:04Speaker 3: that your cook wear is good. We want to make
- 6:06Speaker 3: sure that your well water does not have a lot
- 6:08Speaker 3: of iron, and if you're not on well water, great,
- 6:11Speaker 3: and your supplements those are the easiest things to begin
- 6:14Speaker 3: removing that iron. Now, we want to have a really
- 6:17Speaker 3: good stomach acid, so hydrochloric acid production, because that hydrochloric
- 6:24Speaker 3: acid helps with detox processes, not just molybdenum, but other
- 6:29Speaker 3: things as well. Now, one of my favorite herbs to
- 6:34Speaker 3: use with a high iron situation is milk thistle. It
- 6:39Speaker 3: is not only liver protective, but it also irreversibly binds
- 6:43Speaker 3: to iron. Now, it's difficult to get really good milk thistle,
- 6:47Speaker 3: so if you've got it from the grocery store, you
- 6:50Speaker 3: might have to take a little bit. But let's say
- 6:52Speaker 3: that you know your numbers and you've got both high
- 6:55Speaker 3: iron and high ferytin, you could legitimately have a hemochromatope
- 7:00Speaker 3: situation going on. I find that there's a lot of
- 7:03Speaker 3: people out there throwing around the hemochromatosis diagnosis, which I'm
- 7:08Speaker 3: not so sold on for most people. I don't think
- 7:11Speaker 3: humans by and large are just deficient or defunct in
- 7:15Speaker 3: their ability to get rid of iron. I think there's
- 7:17Speaker 3: a lot of zinc deficiencies and a lot of molybdenum deficiencies,
- 7:21Speaker 3: as well as B vitamins, because B vitamins are very
- 7:24Speaker 3: heat liable, meaning they get destroyed with heating, and so
- 7:29Speaker 3: all this highly processed, overheated food that we eat, even
- 7:33Speaker 3: some of the protein powders and mewle replacement shakes that
- 7:36Speaker 3: people will do are overly heated to dry them quickly
- 7:40Speaker 3: to bring them to market and therefore make money, not
- 7:43Speaker 3: for your health, but just simply to make money. So
- 7:48Speaker 3: milk thistle is an excellent little herb to not only
- 7:51Speaker 3: protect the liver, because if you have high iron, you
- 7:53Speaker 3: likely have liver trouble, and so it's nice to have
- 7:57Speaker 3: some support for the liver in the form of milk
- 8:00Speaker 3: as well as the iron binding capacity. But you should
- 8:03Speaker 3: be doing some blood tests fairly routinely four to six
- 8:06Speaker 3: weeks and to see how you're doing. You may still
- 8:09Speaker 3: want to go ahead and do blood letting or phlebotomy.
- 8:13Speaker 3: Make sure that if it's super high, like I have
- 8:15Speaker 3: a client right now, that their seerum iron is within tolerance,
- 8:19Speaker 3: it's not catastrophic over one hundred and fifty. They're in
- 8:23Speaker 3: their one thirties, and so it's a little elevated. Their
- 8:26Speaker 3: iron saturation, which should be right around thirty two, becomes
- 8:30Speaker 3: we become nervous at over fifty. But she's at a
- 8:33Speaker 3: forty one, and so hey, let's do some milk thistle.
- 8:37Speaker 3: It's really her ferretin that's quite high, and with that
- 8:40Speaker 3: high ferretin, we now run the risk of promoting things
- 8:44Speaker 3: like diabetes and metabolic syndrome and things of this nature.
- 8:50Speaker 3: So we want to be at least somewhat all wise
- 8:56Speaker 3: about the whole situation that we're that we're working on now.
- 9:00Speaker 3: When we have this excessive overload, it can if not
- 9:05Speaker 3: already having a damaged liver, it can damage our liver.
- 9:08Speaker 3: The hepatocytes or liver cells they don't like high iron
- 9:13Speaker 3: for long periods of time, so that's where we get
- 9:15Speaker 3: things like liver disease and sorrhosis where the tissues or
- 9:19Speaker 3: the cells in the liver are literally being destroyed by
- 9:23Speaker 3: the high iron because of its ability to mess up
- 9:27Speaker 3: phwarp proteins. All of that, the cells lose their functionability
- 9:32Speaker 3: as well as mitochondrial function goes down. And if mitochondria
- 9:37Speaker 3: is a new word for you, that is the powerhouse
- 9:40Speaker 3: of the cell where we make all of our energy.
- 9:43Speaker 3: And so the mitochondria are kind of coming forward and
- 9:46Speaker 3: they're literally in mainstream talk these days. So if this
- 9:51Speaker 3: is your first time hearing it, just know that you're
- 9:53Speaker 3: probably going to hear it more and more because it
- 9:55Speaker 3: is these mitochondria that people are trying to target to
- 9:59Speaker 3: help with longevity and living longer, all that kind of stuff. Now,
- 10:03Speaker 3: the longer the iron, it can settle out into the
- 10:05Speaker 3: brain and we get things like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's and
- 10:09Speaker 3: even cardiovascular disease is right behind it. So we definitely
- 10:12Speaker 3: want to get iron levels down. We don't want to
- 10:14Speaker 3: continue to see them just abound. Now, some of the
- 10:18Speaker 3: things that can help are those be vitamins like B six,
- 10:21Speaker 3: B twelve, things of that nature. And we're going to
- 10:24Speaker 3: find that B twelve is in a decent amount of foods,
- 10:29Speaker 3: things like liver, sardines, salmon, tuna, halibate, beef, cheese, eggs, milk.
- 10:34Speaker 3: I mean, there's a lot of sources. And right along
- 10:37Speaker 3: with that B twelve you're going to find that B
- 10:38Speaker 3: six with it. That's also super helpful in converting that
- 10:42Speaker 3: ferytin into seerm iron as the milk thistle begins to
- 10:47Speaker 3: pull it out of the system. So those are some
- 10:49Speaker 3: ideas for you as you move forward and trying to
- 10:51Speaker 3: figure out what is this whole thing I'm dealing with
- 10:55Speaker 3: when it comes to this high iron. And so B
- 10:58Speaker 3: twelve is an excellent thing to be doing. Now, all
- 11:01Speaker 3: of this is to say is that you should have
- 11:04Speaker 3: somebody monitoring you. You shouldn't just trying to be doing this
- 11:07Speaker 3: alone because high iron can be not a good thing.
- 11:11Speaker 3: So as you do things like blood letting and you
- 11:14Speaker 3: start to repair your liver, and if you're imbibing in alcohol,
- 11:19Speaker 3: you may want to slow that down. You may want
- 11:21Speaker 3: to go after some sources of be vitamins that would
- 11:24Speaker 3: be wise. Things like blackstrap molasses are excellent sources of
- 11:28Speaker 3: be vitamins, even B twelve and BE six a little bit.
- 11:33Speaker 3: We could even do some things like nutritional yeast not
- 11:36Speaker 3: you know, let's say that you're mostly vegetarian. It's difficult
- 11:39Speaker 3: to get B twelve in your body as a vegetarian. However,
- 11:43Speaker 3: there's foods that you can do. It's just not that
- 11:47Speaker 3: they're very potent. Organ Meats are by far going to
- 11:50Speaker 3: be a better source for most of these things. And
- 11:53Speaker 3: so there's lots of products out there that tote organs.
- 11:57Speaker 3: Hey take organs in a pill. Now, the question is
- 12:00Speaker 3: how did they process it? Did they heat the crap
- 12:03Speaker 3: out of the organs? Is there anything even alive in
- 12:06Speaker 3: the pill? So before you run out and buy any
- 12:09Speaker 3: willy nilly product that says organs. You may want to
- 12:14Speaker 3: research them and see how they process their organs so
- 12:19Speaker 3: that you can figure out whether or not they're absorbable
- 12:22Speaker 3: or whether there's any viability in them. So, with that understanding,
- 12:26Speaker 3: I hope that's helpful. There is way more than that
- 12:31Speaker 3: just to high iron, but that's going to get us
- 12:33Speaker 3: a good start. So if you find that you're doing
- 12:36Speaker 3: things and it's helping, great, I'd love to hear from you.
- 12:39Speaker 3: If you're struggling with it, I would also love to
- 12:41Speaker 3: hear from you so that we could kind of put
- 12:43Speaker 3: together a program that may be more targeted for you
- 12:47Speaker 3: and do the right blood work so that we would
- 12:49Speaker 3: know what's going on. Now, just for some a little
- 12:55Speaker 3: bit additional help. On a comprehensive metabolic panel, which is
- 13:00Speaker 3: a common blood test, you will find that people get
- 13:04Speaker 3: There is two enzymes that you should be interested in,
- 13:09Speaker 3: and that is the alt and the AST. Those are
- 13:13Speaker 3: tissue enzymes, and when we have high iron, we may
- 13:17Speaker 3: see that those tissues are being destroyed. Now, let's say
- 13:21Speaker 3: that you have high iron and high ferretin and you
- 13:24Speaker 3: have low alt. That tells us that you are definitely
- 13:29Speaker 3: B six efficient. I say definitely, I'm going to say
- 13:32Speaker 3: it's very strong. It's probably not on the border of
- 13:35Speaker 3: one hundred percent, definitely, but it is a very high
- 13:38Speaker 3: percentage that you're B six efficient. You could be FOL
- 13:42Speaker 3: eight deficient as well. And those things will help convert
- 13:45Speaker 3: the ferretin to iron so that you can start getting
- 13:47Speaker 3: rid of it. But they will also be helpful to
- 13:50Speaker 3: your liver to be repairing as best as it can.
- 13:53Speaker 3: So just some tidbits for you as we end this podcast,
- 13:59Speaker 3: and I hope this was helpful. Until next time, I'm
- 14:01Speaker 3: doctor Troy, and remember there is way more right with
- 14:05Speaker 3: you than there is wrong with you.
