Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: We are out of the gates on Sporting State. It
- 0:02Speaker 1: is Hutton Withrow. Glad you're with us. Good morning to you.
- 0:06Speaker 1: Chad Withrow, a well-deserved hour off today. He'll be with
- 0:09Speaker 1: us in an hour from right now. And Timmy B.,
- 0:12Speaker 1: Tim Brando, the legendary voice for college football. He'll be
- 0:16Speaker 1: with us coming up in about 15 minutes. Plenty to
- 0:19Speaker 1: discuss over the next two hours here on Sporting State
- 0:22Speaker 1: and throughout the day here on the Sporting State Network.
- 0:24Speaker 1: We're presented by Hard Rock Bet. I have a suggestion
- 0:29Speaker 1: for Amy Adams Strunk, on who to partner with in
- 0:34Speaker 1: order to save Titans football. A partnership that brings a
- 0:38Speaker 1: championship blueprint, a standard of championships. A partner who brings
- 0:46Speaker 1: a background of someone who's known for winning. And it's
- 0:51Speaker 1: the opposite of what the Titans organization is doing right now.
- 0:55Speaker 1: They lose on Sunday afternoons. This suggestion... would return a
- 1:00Speaker 1: culture where the people in charge can actually lead and
- 1:06Speaker 1: not have to walk on eggshells every single day, waiting
- 1:12Speaker 1: for Burke the Turk to walk down the hall and
- 1:14Speaker 1: deliver the news that they're being fired. I'll tell you
- 1:17Speaker 1: that idea in just a moment. But first, I think
- 1:19Speaker 1: it's important to lay out the football background here, the
- 1:22Speaker 1: failure of football over the course of the last few
- 1:25Speaker 1: years of the organization, and why the Titans have been losers.
- 1:28Speaker 1: And in I don't think they've lost everything as we
- 1:31Speaker 1: sit here today. But they've got to make some adjustments.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Every single statement that Amy Adams Strunk has made since... Really,
- 1:41Speaker 1: I'm thinking back to whenever they fired John Robinson. It
- 1:45Speaker 1: lays out a very specific and obvious standard. It is
- 1:50Speaker 1: a standard of winning. It's a standard of championships. That's
- 1:56Speaker 1: the end goal. And if you read the words... She
- 2:00Speaker 1: mentions her extremely high expectations for success, and she does
- 2:05Speaker 1: that a lot. But words only mean something like that
- 2:09Speaker 1: it's fabric if the product matches performance. And right now,
- 2:14Speaker 1: the product is pathetic. We can see that. She can
- 2:17Speaker 1: see that. I think she knows how bad it is.
- 2:22Speaker 1: And right now, it's worse than when she took over
- 2:25Speaker 1: this ownership group and when she became the controlling owner.
- 2:29Speaker 1: And she brought wins back whenever she did that. And
- 2:32Speaker 1: that was the Ken Wisenhunt's miserable portion of the franchise run.
- 2:37Speaker 1: It didn't last that long. He wasn't even here two years,
- 2:39Speaker 1: and that's a theme of this too. But I want
- 2:42Speaker 1: to remember how demanding she was with results. She told
- 2:48Speaker 1: the fan base, year after year, over the last few years,
- 2:51Speaker 1: every two years, however frequent it's been, these guys will
- 2:54Speaker 1: win or they can get paid to go away and
- 2:56Speaker 1: stop messing with my franchise. When they fired John Robinson
- 3:02Speaker 1: in December of 22, she made it clear the ultimate
- 3:05Speaker 1: goal is to raise the standard. She emphasized that the
- 3:10Speaker 1: football of the team, the organization, is strictly measured by results,
- 3:16Speaker 1: wins and losses, and that despite what the Titans had
- 3:18Speaker 1: been doing in the recent success through that run, she
- 3:22Speaker 1: had higher expectations and aspirations for where the team needed
- 3:25Speaker 1: to go. Higher aspirations... needed to be met. And remember
- 3:30Speaker 1: that the team was 7-5 at that moment. Fast forward
- 3:34Speaker 1: to Vrabel. The day she parted ways with him. A
- 3:38Speaker 1: coach of the year. A coach who brought a Titans
- 3:41Speaker 1: identity that was defined league-wide. Right now, I don't know
- 3:46Speaker 1: if we can define anything positive offensively. She doubled down
- 3:51Speaker 1: in that statement. She said that the Titans strived to
- 3:55Speaker 1: be a premier franchise. She noted that that she had
- 3:59Speaker 1: disappointment in the previous two seasons, and that it was
- 4:03Speaker 1: just going in the wrong direction. She wanted to go
- 4:05Speaker 1: in a different direction, and she said that she wanted
- 4:07Speaker 1: to tell the fans, absolutely yes, we are going to
- 4:10Speaker 1: compete for championships. No apologies for high expectations, and we
- 4:15Speaker 1: will regularly compete for championships. Wren Carthon pulls the plug there,
- 4:20Speaker 1: and the message was much of the same. We heard
- 4:23Speaker 1: from her through that statement. And she's told the fans
- 4:26Speaker 1: directly that the team's level of performance was completely unacceptable.
- 4:31Speaker 1: And you get the theme. Championships, premier organization, high expectations,
- 4:37Speaker 1: no apologies GTFO. But then something changed. Because when Brian
- 4:42Speaker 1: Callahan was fired, Amy Adams Strunk, the statement in the
- 4:46Speaker 1: standard wasn't there. Instead, we got a statement from Chad Brinker.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Insert job description here for him.
- 4:53Speaker 2: And.
- 4:54Speaker 1: you can see how dramatically things change. Brinker, he skipped
- 4:58Speaker 1: the talk of championships and he focused on patient and
- 5:03Speaker 1: strategic plans and a sustainable strategy that we wanted to
- 5:10Speaker 1: demonstrate sufficient growth. It wasn't good with Callahan. A change
- 5:15Speaker 1: needed to be made, but strategic plan and sustainable growth
- 5:19Speaker 1: for a football program and sufficient effort or performance I mean,
- 5:25Speaker 1: those are phrases businesses use, but it's more like a
- 5:28Speaker 1: quarterly earnings call or a board of directors meeting where
- 5:31Speaker 1: those words are thrown out. It's an entertainment model. It's
- 5:35Speaker 1: a Google-like statement. Look at the timeline. Carthon, fired after
- 5:40Speaker 1: year two. Callahan, fired during year two. And right now,
- 5:46Speaker 1: general manager Mike Borgonzi is entering year two. And the
- 5:51Speaker 1: future timings of all of this is fascinating to me. 2027,
- 5:56Speaker 1: the doors are opening to the brand new state-of-the-art $ 2. 1
- 5:59Speaker 1: billion Nissan Stadium. And right now, the plan was, what,
- 6:07Speaker 1: three years ago, this three-year plan to rebuild. The plan
- 6:10Speaker 1: was to be winning right now as the team moved
- 6:13Speaker 1: in to the new stadium. But as we sit here
- 6:17Speaker 1: right now, the football team has literally never been worse.
- 6:22Speaker 1: It's really gone downhill since that moment. Would Amy Adams
- 6:25Speaker 1: Strunk really want to open year one of this state-of-the-art
- 6:30Speaker 1: stadium with a coach at best sitting on the hot seat,
- 6:35Speaker 1: just like Callahan was, going into year two? If they're
- 6:40Speaker 1: awful again, he's out, and Callahan only got six games
- 6:43Speaker 1: in year two. You can't just suddenly just speak things
- 6:47Speaker 1: into existence. What would happen is that season would be awful.
- 6:52Speaker 1: They would be headed into another three or maybe if
- 6:54Speaker 1: they could get to three wins, three and 13, two
- 6:57Speaker 1: and 14 product. And that is going to be the
- 7:00Speaker 1: attachment to year one of the stadium. Opening that would
- 7:04Speaker 1: be a total embarrassment. And she's headed into that stadium
- 7:08Speaker 1: with a league that doesn't want them in primetime. Networks
- 7:11Speaker 1: don't want that offense. The offense can't even put back-to-back
- 7:14Speaker 1: drives together, let alone win back-to-back games. I think they're
- 7:18Speaker 1: headed for another season where they're going to be on
- 7:22Speaker 1: a primetime preseason game to unveil the stadium. Or Thursday
- 7:26Speaker 1: night football against a team that has a national audience
- 7:29Speaker 1: that's going to come in here and kick their ass
- 7:32Speaker 1: in front of their fans, not Titans fans. They'll have
- 7:34Speaker 1: a new Nissan Stadium takeover. Embarrassment. It's not entertainment. It's
- 7:39Speaker 1: Titans embarrassment. So who should she turn to to run
- 7:43Speaker 1: this organization? How do you fix this broken team? And
- 7:48Speaker 1: how do you get fans back on board with a
- 7:51Speaker 1: team that they just don't like anymore? Amy Adams Strump
- 7:54Speaker 1: needs to look across the Cumberland River and do exactly
- 7:57Speaker 1: what former governor Bill Haslam has put into place with
- 8:01Speaker 1: the Nashville Predators. Haslam brought a different mindset to this.
- 8:06Speaker 1: He went outside the box, but really just went to
- 8:10Speaker 1: a standard that he would bring in decision-making processes. And
- 8:15Speaker 1: he bought the Preds and turned to an all-time great,
- 8:20Speaker 1: a leader, a champion, someone who knows what it takes
- 8:24Speaker 1: to lead and follow a process. He bought into Nick Saban,
- 8:31Speaker 1: and Saban bought in, literally. Literally bought in. He's a
- 8:34Speaker 1: minority owner of the Nashville Predators, and it might not
- 8:37Speaker 1: be widely talked about, but throughout this recent surge, he
- 8:42Speaker 1: was a big part of the general manager hiring. He
- 8:45Speaker 1: interviewed the candidates. Think about Nick Saban. He doesn't coach hockey.
- 8:51Speaker 1: He doesn't manage a hockey organization or a roster, but
- 8:55Speaker 1: he manages and coaches a championship level. His standard actually
- 8:59Speaker 1: reflects Strunk's quoted standard. And look what he said. I'm
- 9:03Speaker 1: no expert in hockey. What it takes to have successful organizations,
- 9:06Speaker 1: they want to be successful, the people in this town,
- 9:08Speaker 1: the fans who support it. And he goes on to say, hey, yeah,
- 9:12Speaker 1: I want someone who knows how to win titles. And
- 9:16Speaker 1: I get it. The fans get that. It's obvious. But
- 9:19Speaker 1: he has results with this. Saban would work beautifully for
- 9:24Speaker 1: Nashville's NFL franchise. Have the paperwork ready in January. And
- 9:28Speaker 1: I'm not saying Saban is the next head coach. I'm
- 9:32Speaker 1: not saying he's the next general manager. But instead of
- 9:35Speaker 1: Burke Nihill as the voice of ownership, Saban should be
- 9:38Speaker 1: the leader of football. The leader of a football organization.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Not the team president, as an owner. What if Nick
- 9:46Speaker 1: Saban was offered a percentage of the Tennessee Titans, which
- 9:50Speaker 1: is exactly what Tom Brady just bought into with the
- 9:54Speaker 1: Las Vegas Raiders? Minority ownership. Have Saban step into the
- 9:59Speaker 1: exact same role where Brady right now is the face
- 10:02Speaker 1: of the franchise he's the decision maker he's an owner
- 10:06Speaker 1: but he is the voice of football about football and
- 10:10Speaker 1: he signs off on the decisions he acts as ownership
- 10:14Speaker 1: because he is ownership just like Saban Peyton Manning At
- 10:21Speaker 1: the very top of my list. And here's another Haslam example.
- 10:24Speaker 1: Manning is tight with Bill Haslam. Tennessee connections, we know.
- 10:27Speaker 1: He's former governor. Manning was also a part of an
- 10:32Speaker 1: organization or I guess a group that wanted to have
- 10:36Speaker 1: an expansion franchise for the WNBA team. Not the Nashville
- 10:39Speaker 1: Balls with Clay Travis, although maybe Clay can call up
- 10:43Speaker 1: Peyton and see what happens. But a group that wanted
- 10:47Speaker 1: to bring a WNBA team to Nashville. Haslam, of course,
- 10:49Speaker 1: owns the Predators. They run the arena. That's where the
- 10:53Speaker 1: WNBA team would have played. You get the picture there.
- 10:56Speaker 1: Offer Peyton minority ownership. The exact model, again, of Brady.
- 11:02Speaker 1: Strunk owns 66% of the Tennessee Titans. She can allow
- 11:06Speaker 1: Manning to buy in at the minimum stake, I believe,
- 11:10Speaker 1: is 11%. That would be the same as the other
- 11:13Speaker 1: owners on the Titans ownership group right now. or buy more,
- 11:19Speaker 1: but she would still remain the controlling owner. And then
- 11:23Speaker 1: you have someone in place that seriously is about football.
- 11:27Speaker 1: And you could also have the entertainment. Uh, let's talk
- 11:30Speaker 1: about the reality of the organization. The reality is the
- 11:33Speaker 1: Titans are, are owned by a family. The family, uh,
- 11:37Speaker 1: and this fan base have never been more disconnected. Um,
- 11:42Speaker 1: they're losing the fan base. They currently are steered in
- 11:45Speaker 1: a direction of, um, of a leader who's about events.
- 11:51Speaker 1: The focus isn't crazy. I get what they're doing. The stadium,
- 11:54Speaker 1: it offers so many more options than the current one.
- 11:56Speaker 1: You don't have to have just a handful of concerts
- 11:58Speaker 1: a year and then 10 or nine home games. You
- 12:02Speaker 1: can do a lot more. And the ownership, but they
- 12:05Speaker 1: own everything that's done or profit from under the roof.
- 12:09Speaker 1: Right now it's Titans Entertainment. It is not Titans football.
- 12:13Speaker 1: And football is what the organization does. It's not what
- 12:19Speaker 1: they're about right now. They're about the industry. Titans of industry.
- 12:27Speaker 1: Get back to football. It's time that the football organization
- 12:33Speaker 1: becomes a football organization. Strunk can do that. And she's
- 12:38Speaker 1: pivoted before. It's not like she can't get this back.
- 12:41Speaker 1: She punted on the... Finally, on that structure for the...
- 12:46Speaker 1: For the.
- 12:49Speaker 1: I guess the hierarchy of the organization, the front office structure.
- 12:53Speaker 1: And within that, the structure couldn't even define what Burke
- 12:59Speaker 1: Nyhill did compared to Chad Brinker. Brinker couldn't answer the question.
- 13:04Speaker 1: And it's the structure that Burke came up with. And
- 13:07Speaker 1: now she got back to what she feels comfortable with.
- 13:10Speaker 1: She said that in her statement or in a letter
- 13:12Speaker 1: to fans that the Titans put out. It's not completely lost,
- 13:18Speaker 1: but it's time. That's they get back to focused on winning.
- 13:22Speaker 1: The Titans are losers right now, but they haven't lost everything. Um,
- 13:27Speaker 1: I just think the focus needs to change. And if
- 13:29Speaker 1: you could do that, it doesn't have to be with, uh,
- 13:31Speaker 1: a change in ownership. You just have to have someone
- 13:33Speaker 1: buy in and lead this team where they need to
- 13:36Speaker 1: be focused on the direction of the path that they're
- 13:38Speaker 1: on with the map, because they've, they've lost it. They
- 13:41Speaker 1: took a wrong turn. You can have both focus on both.
- 13:45Speaker 1: And right now the focus is not on both. Um,
- 13:50Speaker 1: I see Timmy B. Timmy B. Tim Brando about to
- 13:53Speaker 1: join us. Can't wait to get into the discussion. We
- 13:55Speaker 1: have his top 15. I'm fascinated to get his thoughts
- 13:59Speaker 1: on that as he prepares for his weekend game about
- 14:02Speaker 1: the matchup between two teams that are coming off of
- 14:06Speaker 1: a loss. One has a high expectation. The other nearly
- 14:11Speaker 1: pulled a big upset. We have plenty to discuss when
- 14:15Speaker 1: it comes to The way that we're headed versus the
- 14:20Speaker 1: Saturday vibe. Because this past Saturday and this upcoming Saturday,
- 14:24Speaker 1: I'm not thinking about all the headlines of business. Let's

- 15:21Speaker 1: Really appreciate it. How have you been?
- 15:22Speaker 2: You bet. I'm great.
- 15:23Speaker 3: Busy.
- 15:23Speaker 2: I've been really busy.
- 15:26Speaker 3: I actually had me bouncing around between college football and
- 15:29Speaker 3: the NFL a little bit this year because of the
- 15:31Speaker 3: baseball playoffs, which was a lot of fun, you know,
- 15:33Speaker 3: getting to be with Drew Brees again and Yeah. The
- 15:37Speaker 3: game didn't quite cooperate. We thought maybe the Jets would
- 15:39Speaker 3: play better against the Bears. But still, it was fun
- 15:41Speaker 3: to be with him on the week before he was
- 15:43Speaker 3: about to go into the Ring of Honor.
- 15:45Speaker 2: And I was happy to step in. That's the role
- 15:49Speaker 2: I play at Fox.
- 15:50Speaker 3: So whenever they call the number, you know, bring the
- 15:52Speaker 3: old left-hander out of the bullpen, I'm happy to help.
- 15:55Speaker 3: But the college game, you know, is still my passion.
- 15:57Speaker 3: I get this question a lot, and I'll just address
- 16:00Speaker 3: it first and foremost. Somebody will always say, I didn't
- 16:02Speaker 3: know you did NFL.
- 16:03Speaker 2: Really?
- 16:03Speaker 3: Okay.
- 16:03Speaker 2: Okay. All right, well, I've been doing it a long time,
- 16:06Speaker 2: and I did NFL games at CBS, too. But they
- 16:09Speaker 2: were regional games, so maybe you didn't always see them.
- 16:11Speaker 2: There was no Red Zone channel back then.
- 16:14Speaker 1: Right.
- 16:15Speaker 2: But there is now, and so your voice pops up,
- 16:18Speaker 2: and a lot of people are going, wow, I didn't
- 16:19Speaker 2: know Tim did that.
- 16:21Speaker 1: I mean, that's why here, before the Titans moved here,
- 16:23Speaker 1: I was either watching the Cowboys or the Steelers or
- 16:27Speaker 1: the Packers. That was it. They just hit the market
- 16:30Speaker 1: and covered everything with the big fan bases.
- 16:33Speaker 3: And a lot of people, either A, just have such
- 16:38Speaker 3: a strong association with me with college that they're like,
- 16:42Speaker 3: he doesn't follow the NFL.
- 16:43Speaker 2: Hell, I don't follow the NFL.
- 16:44Speaker 3: I've followed it my entire career, and it's really the
- 16:47Speaker 3: only pro sport that I've cared about in the last
- 16:51Speaker 3: 25 years probably.
- 16:53Speaker 2: I keep up with the NFL. But calling ball is
- 16:57Speaker 2: calling ball.
- 16:57Speaker 3: And the NFL, anyone that believes that the NFL– is
- 17:02Speaker 3: harder to call than a college game is.
- 17:03Speaker 2: Out of their minds.
- 17:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 17:04Speaker 2: Out of their minds.
- 17:05Speaker 1: There are 45 guys on a roster. Okay.
- 17:06Speaker 3: 53 total, but eight are inactive for every game. When
- 17:16Speaker 3: you go and do a college football game, your board
- 17:19Speaker 3: barely has room. And my board is the biggest in
- 17:21Speaker 3: the business. It barely has room for anything more than
- 17:25Speaker 3: two deep. And in college, they go three deep, three
- 17:28Speaker 3: and a half to four deep. And if the game's
- 17:32Speaker 3: a blowout, here come the walk-ons. So you better know,
- 17:35Speaker 3: you better know about 90 to a hundred guys. So it's, it's,
- 17:39Speaker 3: it's a much easier game to call than, than college football.
- 17:44Speaker 2: It really is.
- 17:44Speaker 3: So, uh, the reaction I see on the internet sometimes is, um,
- 17:49Speaker 3: is funny. Of course, some people are just pissed because,
- 17:53Speaker 3: oh my God, there's a college football announcer doing my game.
- 17:55Speaker 2: You know, no, honest to God.
- 17:58Speaker 1: It's a snobbery. What are they pissed about Herbstree? Do
- 18:02Speaker 1: you think?
- 18:04Speaker 2: Well, he's on digital, so it's not quite the same.
- 18:07Speaker 3: You don't get the same reaction because over-the-air network television
- 18:11Speaker 3: to the folks watching in the Midwest area, in the
- 18:15Speaker 3: Chicago area, they're like, well, I'm accustomed to seeing these guys.
- 18:20Speaker 2: Who's this guy? They don't watch college football.
- 18:22Speaker 1: Hey.
- 18:23Speaker 2: So they don't care about college football, but I do.
- 18:26Speaker 1: The other thing, too, that people may not know, the
- 18:28Speaker 1: media policy in the NFL, you're going to get the
- 18:30Speaker 1: head coach, you're going to get players, you will have
- 18:33Speaker 1: those media.
- 18:33Speaker 2: Access, access.
- 18:34Speaker 1: You get that at some colleges, not all.
- 18:38Speaker 2: Not all.
- 18:38Speaker 1: Vanderbilt went four weeks. They're still going without the quarterbacks talking.
- 18:43Speaker 1: It's way different.
- 18:46Speaker 3: The standards that the NFL has make it so much more–
- 18:52Speaker 3: accessible to the announcers because there are standards that television
- 18:57Speaker 3: must have and there are standards that the organizations must
- 19:00Speaker 3: have with television. And I've told our people, and for
- 19:04Speaker 3: years I've said this, whether it was at CBS or
- 19:08Speaker 3: at Fox, in these television contracts that we do moving forward,
- 19:12Speaker 3: we need to put standards in there that require the
- 19:15Speaker 3: coaches and the coordinators and at least an offensive player
- 19:20Speaker 3: and a defensive player available to the television people every week.
- 19:24Speaker 2: Every week.
- 19:25Speaker 3: And that's not much to ask when you consider the
- 19:27Speaker 3: billions of dollars that television funnels into these universities every year.
- 19:31Speaker 1: No doubt. I would trade the halftime interview for that.
- 19:34Speaker 1: In a heartbeat. Off camera. To me, the on camera,
- 19:38Speaker 1: I don't learn much from that at all. It's way
- 19:42Speaker 1: more beneficial for fans, too, to have.
- 19:43Speaker 2: That access than the halftime interview.
- 19:46Speaker 1: Hey, you've got the Timmy B's top 15. I want
- 19:49Speaker 1: to go through this with you. because we've had a
- 19:50Speaker 1: little topsy-turvy weekend of more coming this upcoming weekend as well.
- 19:55Speaker 1: Georgia number one, tell me your thought process about Indiana
- 19:59Speaker 1: and where you have Bama coming off the loss versus
- 20:04Speaker 1: You know, you've got the Ohio State behind Texas, for instance.
- 20:08Speaker 1: I know that they have the head-to-head win. That's probably
- 20:11Speaker 1: factoring in. But help me with Miami-Notre Dame ahead of Indiana.
- 20:15Speaker 3: I just think that they right now are better football teams,
- 20:19Speaker 3: at least in terms of the way they've performed up
- 20:22Speaker 3: until this point.
- 20:23Speaker 2: Indiana's schedule has worked against them.
- 20:25Speaker 3: I think that, first of all, Northwestern was a better
- 20:28Speaker 3: team than I think everyone expected them to be.
- 20:31Speaker 2: Okay.
- 20:32Speaker 3: But the Northwestern game at the time definitely hurt Indiana
- 20:35Speaker 3: in the polls. And it was going to hurt them
- 20:38Speaker 3: in the polls because no one really thought of them
- 20:40Speaker 3: as being as powerful a team at that time as
- 20:45Speaker 3: they clearly are. I mean, let's give Coach Braun a
- 20:48Speaker 3: lot of credit. That team is really good. But Indiana
- 20:53Speaker 3: didn't play well in that game. And I think part
- 20:55Speaker 3: of the reason for it was the soft non-conference schedule
- 20:58Speaker 3: leading up to it. I don't think for that game,
- 21:01Speaker 3: They were adequately prepared in real game time to be
- 21:06Speaker 3: the kind of team that we thought they'd be when
- 21:08Speaker 3: they played Northwestern. So I dropped them about six spots.
- 21:12Speaker 3: I think I dropped them or five spots down to
- 21:14Speaker 3: number six. So they've worked their way back up. by
- 21:17Speaker 3: their performance recently because I think Nebraska is really good.
- 21:21Speaker 3: Nebraska is– and there are no elite teams here. Like
- 21:25Speaker 3: I'm hearing just after the Georgia-Alabama game.
- 21:28Speaker 2: Now part of this is just the narrative that's created.
- 21:31Speaker 2: And I get it. The mouthpiece. Everyone wants to create
- 21:34Speaker 2: a narrative every week.
- 21:36Speaker 3: There are no– I repeat, no elite teams here. When
- 21:40Speaker 3: you hear these good old boys coming on the afternoons
- 21:43Speaker 3: on ESPN's SEC Network saying, those teams right there now,
- 21:47Speaker 3: they're elite. Those are elite teams right there now. The
- 21:50Speaker 3: hell they are.
- 21:51Speaker 2: No one is elite right now. No one. There are
- 21:54Speaker 2: a lot of really good teams out there. Really good teams, Jonathan.
- 21:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:59Speaker 2: But there aren't any great teams right now.
- 22:01Speaker 3: And after last week, which we thought we might get
- 22:05Speaker 3: some answers, I guess I still have more questions going
- 22:10Speaker 3: into week seven that I haven't answered. Georgia is, I think,
- 22:15Speaker 3: worthy of being number one because they went on the road,
- 22:18Speaker 3: the circumstances were different, and yeah, okay, maybe there was
- 22:22Speaker 3: a call at the end that might have appeared to
- 22:24Speaker 3: be outrageous to some.
- 22:26Speaker 2: Let me tell you, I've.
- 22:27Speaker 3: Seen pass interference calls in the past made when that happened,
- 22:32Speaker 3: but I've also seen a lot of no calls when
- 22:36Speaker 3: a player was absolutely mugged much more so than Alabama
- 22:41Speaker 3: receiver was then.
- 22:42Speaker 2: So had the, had.
- 22:44Speaker 3: The defender really come in strong, maybe raised his, his
- 22:48Speaker 3: elbows and, and, and launched himself into, he ran into
- 22:52Speaker 3: the guy. He ran into him. No, he didn't turn around.
- 22:55Speaker 3: And a lot of times not having your head turned
- 22:57Speaker 3: means you're going to be flagged, but it's a subjective
- 23:01Speaker 3: opinion of an official each time. And That's why the
- 23:06Speaker 3: flag wasn't thrown. Had it been more egregious, then I
- 23:09Speaker 3: think no question it would have been. But he wasn't
- 23:12Speaker 3: overly physical with the contact.
- 23:15Speaker 1: Had it been saving coaching, I think the flag comes out.
- 23:18Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 23:19Speaker 3: And that's where the Bammers have such a problem.
- 23:25Speaker 2: They're accustomed to it.
- 23:26Speaker 3: Alabama fans are accustomed to getting that call always. So
- 23:31Speaker 3: they didn't get it this time. Well, welcome to the
- 23:34Speaker 3: rest of the world, Alabama. You no longer have the
- 23:37Speaker 3: GOAT on the sidelines, okay? But you know what's really
- 23:40Speaker 3: funny about it to me? And I knew this would happen,
- 23:44Speaker 3: and they're so predictable. They're so predictable, Jonathan. You knew
- 23:49Speaker 3: they'd be saying, well, by God, we like Kalen DeBoer now.
- 23:52Speaker 3: He just chewed out that kid, said he cost me
- 23:55Speaker 3: the game. You cost us the game. See, they love that.
- 23:59Speaker 3: They love it when the coach loses it and starts
- 24:02Speaker 3: bullying one of his players.
- 24:04Speaker 2: They love that. Why? Because Nick did that.
- 24:07Speaker 3: Now, that's not Kalen's normal personality. It's not his normal characteristics. But, okay, yeah,
- 24:15Speaker 3: he's been under the gun a little bit. So maybe
- 24:17Speaker 3: he was pushed to the edge because he's tired of
- 24:19Speaker 3: people being pissed at him for being.
- 24:21Speaker 2: Too laid back. So he let her rip.
- 24:23Speaker 3: So now, even in defeat, he's currying favor from the
- 24:28Speaker 3: Alabama fan base. That is without question. And listen, I'm
- 24:32Speaker 3: a conservative. I'm not a crazy conservative, but I'm a conservative.
- 24:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:36Speaker 3: But, you know, getting in the face of a player
- 24:40Speaker 3: and chewing his ass out, to me, doesn't qualify you
- 24:44Speaker 3: as being the GOAT or the next GOAT or whatever, okay?
- 24:49Speaker 3: But it's so predictable that Alabama fans would feel all
- 24:52Speaker 3: of a sudden now, this is our guy, after they
- 24:55Speaker 3: have been vilifying him for an entire season leading up
- 24:58Speaker 3: to that very moment when they actually lose a game,
- 25:01Speaker 3: but they're happier because of it.
- 25:03Speaker 1: You know, Tim, throughout the entirety of Saban's run, the
- 25:10Speaker 1: vast majority, that player doesn't do that, right? I think
- 25:16Speaker 1: what happened at the end of that game is something
- 25:18Speaker 1: we saw with Florida whenever they had a downturn. They
- 25:22Speaker 1: had rosters that were doing things like that, and they
- 25:24Speaker 1: lost games, throwing cleats and stuff like that. That's a
- 25:28Speaker 1: bad sign. I'm not saying it has to necessarily snowball,
- 25:32Speaker 1: but you lose that game because of that, because of
- 25:34Speaker 1: that minute detail of just not retaliating. It's a sign.
- 25:40Speaker 1: Georgia's not doing that for a reason.
- 25:42Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah. And I think that maybe what the Alabama
- 25:45Speaker 3: fans are also going to have to find out is
- 25:48Speaker 3: that because this does happen in the Southeastern Conference, it does.
- 25:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:52Speaker 3: These referees, all these officials are from somewhere in the South.
- 25:55Speaker 1: Sure.
- 25:56Speaker 2: They are. Yeah. Yeah. And this is one of the
- 26:00Speaker 2: reasons why we need to nationalize. This is another issue.
- 26:02Speaker 3: We need to nationalize officiating so we can remove that
- 26:06Speaker 3: veil of impropriety that's out there. We need to not
- 26:09Speaker 3: have supervisors of officials in every conference.
- 26:12Speaker 2: We need to have one. One universal potentate of officials.
- 26:18Speaker 3: We need to have a big-time guy that is universally
- 26:22Speaker 3: in charge of all officiating.
- 26:24Speaker 2: But Kirby Smart is now Saban in that league. He
- 26:29Speaker 2: absolutely is. I mean, he's playing the role of Saban.
- 26:34Speaker 3: And Like it or not, he's been around a long
- 26:38Speaker 3: time as a player and as a coach. Some of
- 26:40Speaker 3: those officials probably have best friends or guys that they
- 26:44Speaker 3: were mentored by that were refereeing in the 90s when
- 26:49Speaker 3: Kirby was playing. at Georgia when I was calling games
- 26:52Speaker 3: on Jefferson pilot in the nineties.
- 26:54Speaker 2: Okay.
- 26:54Speaker 3: I'm telling you that the familiarity with a guy that's
- 26:57Speaker 3: been in the league that long is always going to
- 26:59Speaker 3: help a guy. And Kirby has that. And by the way,
- 27:02Speaker 3: he's earned that over time. I, I don't, and he
- 27:05Speaker 3: should use it. I'm not saying he shouldn't use it.
- 27:08Speaker 1: Uh, the, the, you know, the fan base, like what,
- 27:10Speaker 1: what the boarded, uh, Georgia's fans absolutely love the wind.
- 27:13Speaker 1: They also love the first down, you know, Tomahawk. Oh yeah, absolutely. Hey,
- 27:20Speaker 1: so OU wins, and we see yesterday Sark defending Arch.
- 27:28Speaker 1: Where do you come away with Texas at that performance?
- 27:31Speaker 1: By the way, I picked Texas to win, and I
- 27:33Speaker 1: didn't think OU's offense was going to do anything. I
- 27:36Speaker 1: also picked Texas because I thought Arch would meet the
- 27:37Speaker 1: moment the way he did the fourth quarter against Ohio State.
- 27:41Speaker 1: By what Sark has said about it, if there's any
- 27:44Speaker 1: different last name on the jersey that he would be praised,
- 27:47Speaker 1: I don't know about that. But also, Mateer is a
- 27:50Speaker 1: good example. He's not praised, but he had a great
- 27:53Speaker 1: game against Texas and was actually doing what I thought
- 27:55Speaker 1: he would do when he went to Norman.
- 27:58Speaker 3: Yeah, Mateer looked like Mateer, the one we used to see.
- 28:02Speaker 3: And we had not seen that in games prior. And
- 28:06Speaker 3: part of that might have been injury related, okay? But
- 28:10Speaker 3: I do think that he reasserted himself. And now Oklahoma,
- 28:14Speaker 3: that's a season saver. I like the way you do
- 28:17Speaker 3: your top 15. You have them where you have the
- 28:19Speaker 3: just out. But again, I like that because it's week
- 28:22Speaker 3: to week. You change, you flow with it like that's
- 28:25Speaker 3: how it should be.
- 28:26Speaker 2: Yeah, you'll see teams move seven, eight spots in mind.
- 28:30Speaker 1: Yeah, this is how it should be.
- 28:32Speaker 2: Once the season gets started.
- 28:34Speaker 3: But I'm also not going to drop a team unless
- 28:38Speaker 3: I see what I think is a performance that's not
- 28:40Speaker 3: worthy of a number one, two, or three ranking. Like
- 28:42Speaker 3: after the Northwestern game, Indiana needed to drop. They needed
- 28:46Speaker 3: to drop significantly. So I dropped them, and now they're
- 28:48Speaker 3: slowly kind of working their way back. But again, the
- 28:52Speaker 3: fans don't know what I know, and that is the
- 28:54Speaker 3: teams they're playing are really good even if they don't know.
- 28:58Speaker 2: They're really good.
- 29:01Speaker 3: I think that's the thing that just jumps out at
- 29:03Speaker 3: the top of the poll is, yeah, I see that
- 29:06Speaker 3: Texas lost the game, but I also know that that
- 29:09Speaker 3: is the rivalry game and they shouldn't drop that far. Now,
- 29:13Speaker 3: when I hear someone say, gosh, I would only drop
- 29:16Speaker 3: them to, you know, I would only drop them a
- 29:19Speaker 3: spot or two spots or like, for instance, some voted
- 29:23Speaker 3: Georgia number one, but Alabama number two this week. What?
- 29:27Speaker 1: What?
- 29:29Speaker 2: I'm sorry, no.
- 29:31Speaker 3: Alabama was given what they were given in preseason because
- 29:37Speaker 3: of who they are, not because of what they've done.
- 29:40Speaker 2: And that still is in the minds of a lot
- 29:42Speaker 2: of these AP voters.
- 29:43Speaker 3: But I will tell you, if you look at my
- 29:44Speaker 3: just-out category, it's about twice the size of what it
- 29:47Speaker 3: would normally be.
- 29:50Speaker 2: I'm not going to be as critical.
- 29:51Speaker 3: Of AP voters now as I once was, Jonathan, because
- 29:55Speaker 3: right now, between, say, And I'll start with, say, number eight,
- 30:00Speaker 3: where I've got Utah and BYU stacked.
- 30:03Speaker 2: From that point to about 30.
- 30:05Speaker 3: 32, it's about the same.
- 30:09Speaker 2: It's about the same.
- 30:10Speaker 3: And if ever there was a year where you have
- 30:13Speaker 3: a telling sign to indicate to people why a 2014
- 30:16Speaker 3: playoff really would work, this is it.
- 30:20Speaker 2: Okay, look at the balance that's out there.
- 30:22Speaker 3: There are so many really good teams that that people
- 30:26Speaker 3: don't know that much about. The Big 12 is at
- 30:29Speaker 3: the very top of that list.
- 30:31Speaker 2: Houston is the most.
- 30:33Speaker 1: You've seen many of these teams.
- 30:34Speaker 3: Houston is the most undervalued team in America. Connor Wigman
- 30:41Speaker 3: is the best quarterback that gets the least publicity. Willie
- 30:45Speaker 3: Fritz is the best coach that gets the least amount
- 30:48Speaker 3: of credit for being a great coach. Do I need
- 30:51Speaker 3: to remind people what he did at Tulane in 22?
- 30:53Speaker 2: No. He beat Caleb Williams.
- 30:57Speaker 3: It took a Tulane team to win the Cotton Bowl
- 30:59Speaker 3: over a USC team with a Heisman Trophy winner.
- 31:02Speaker 2: Okay, now he's at Houston.
- 31:04Speaker 3: Yeah, they lost that game to Texas Tech by like
- 31:07Speaker 3: two inches in a Friday night game that we had
- 31:10Speaker 3: about a month ago. And that was their only loss.
- 31:13Speaker 3: That's their only loss of the year. Kansas State is
- 31:17Speaker 3: not a horrible team.
- 31:18Speaker 2: They're not.
- 31:19Speaker 3: They went in there and absolutely torched them. The Kansas
- 31:23Speaker 3: State defense against the pass was number one in the
- 31:25Speaker 3: country before the game started.
- 31:27Speaker 2: They got a tight end.
- 31:28Speaker 3: Patrick Overmeyer caught four touchdown passes in that game. I
- 31:33Speaker 3: don't think many people know who Overmeyer is. I'll tell you,
- 31:35Speaker 3: NFL scouts know who he is. He's probably going to
- 31:38Speaker 3: be a first-round draft pick. He's that good.
- 31:41Speaker 1: Coming up, we're going to dive into a discussion about
- 31:45Speaker 1: the upcoming schedule. This weekend, I love it. I get
- 31:49Speaker 1: to kick back. I put four games on each TV.
- 31:55Speaker 2: Past midnight, we can take you through that.
- 31:57Speaker 1: If you're going to the game, if you're covering the game,
- 32:00Speaker 1: if you're calling the game, you don't get to see
- 32:02Speaker 1: these great matchups unless you're putting EBR on. This is
- 32:05Speaker 1: an EBR-proof sport. I love it. I want to know
- 32:09Speaker 1: where you stand on it. We also need to discuss
- 32:12Speaker 1: your matchup this weekend and where these two teams could
- 32:15Speaker 1: be headed. and what the two coaches could be facing.
- 32:19Speaker 1: We'll do that as well straight ahead here on Hutton
- 32:21Speaker 1: and Withrow. It is Hutton and Withrow presented by Hard
- 32:25Speaker 1: Rock Bet here on Sport and State Network. Timmy B,
- 32:29Speaker 1: Perfect 10 broadcaster all the way around. And the name
- 32:32Speaker 1: says it all for Perfect 10 Mortgage as well. Apply
- 32:34Speaker 1: in 10 minutes, close in 10 days. That's the whole idea.
- 32:37Speaker 1: Mortgage is simple, fast, fair. 10 minutes start to finish
- 32:39Speaker 1: right from your phone. No stack of paperwork. You're checking
- 32:42Speaker 1: your options in It's not going to ding your credit score.
- 32:45Speaker 1: And you're going to speak to a human. Yes, you
- 32:48Speaker 1: can speak to a human when you call Perfect 10
- 32:50Speaker 1: Mortgage at 855-789-1010. If you're buying new construction, ask about
- 32:55Speaker 1: the builder program. Builder funded rates right now in a
- 32:59Speaker 1: buy down. And you can get a rate the bank
- 33:01Speaker 1: can't print. If you're not ready to buy, that's fine.
- 33:04Speaker 1: Date the rate, marry the house. Date the rate, marry
- 33:06Speaker 1: the house. As Chad says, put that on a t-shirt.
- 33:09Speaker 1: Date the rate, marry the house. Perfect10Mortgage. com. Or call 855-789-1010.
- 33:13Speaker 1: That's perfect10mortgage. com. Perfect 10, for me, is the 10 p.m.
- 33:21Speaker 1: start time for Tim's game this week. It's 10 p.m. Central.
- 33:28Speaker 1: The late night delight, as Timmy says. There it is.
- 33:32Speaker 1: Nebraska at Oregon. So, hey... I know you're already prepping.
- 33:37Speaker 1: You've never stopped that. You enjoy it. Live on Fox,
- 33:41Speaker 1: we're going to get this matchup. I can't wait to
- 33:43Speaker 1: watch this because of the way Nebraska played. The Matt
- 33:46Speaker 1: Rule storyline of, like, when are we going to see
- 33:49Speaker 1: this pick up? And now they're playing well. Oregon, meanwhile,
- 33:53Speaker 1: I'm not expecting the record that I see. And they
- 33:56Speaker 1: started slow last year, too. So playing at home probably
- 34:00Speaker 1: factors in, but quarterback play and much more does as well.
- 34:05Speaker 3: So the biggest question of the week up until this
- 34:08Speaker 3: point is how in the hell did this game wind
- 34:10Speaker 3: up on at that time?
- 34:13Speaker 2: That's the number one question. Well, here it is.
- 34:15Speaker 3: All right. In a nutshell, college football now has way
- 34:18Speaker 3: too many scheduling snafus that need to be addressed moving forward.
- 34:22Speaker 3: And I believe will be once we finally address the,
- 34:26Speaker 3: the big problem that we have with the CFP going
- 34:30Speaker 3: to 24 teams, but they're going to do this. It's
- 34:33Speaker 3: going to happen. All right. Um, We're going to have
- 34:36Speaker 3: more intersectional games and we're going to need some adjustments
- 34:39Speaker 3: to conference schedules and the big 10, the sec, the
- 34:42Speaker 3: big 12 and the ACC all need to get together
- 34:45Speaker 3: and look at games that are always going to be
- 34:49Speaker 3: high end marquee games that everyone circles.
- 34:52Speaker 2: Okay.
- 34:53Speaker 3: We know what those games are. You can't have six teams,
- 34:57Speaker 3: six games involving top 25 teams. playing one another week
- 35:02Speaker 3: after week after week.
- 35:03Speaker 2: We can't do that.
- 35:03Speaker 1: We've got the schedule for this weekend, to your point.
- 35:06Speaker 1: There it is.
- 35:07Speaker 3: Yeah, and the thing that jumps out, the decision-making process,
- 35:12Speaker 3: those are the marquee games, yes. But why did the
- 35:15Speaker 3: game that we have fall where it did back on
- 35:19Speaker 3: Fox when both CBS and NBC are picking second and third? Well,
- 35:23Speaker 3: because Michigan and Penn State, despite their records and despite
- 35:27Speaker 3: the fact that both of them, I think we would
- 35:29Speaker 3: safely be able to say– are not in the mix
- 35:32Speaker 3: right now for the 12-team college football playoffs, are the
- 35:35Speaker 3: biggest brands, two of the biggest brands in all of
- 35:39Speaker 3: college football.
- 35:40Speaker 2: They are ratings monsters, okay?
- 35:42Speaker 3: After Ohio State and the Big Ten, no teams get
- 35:46Speaker 3: bigger numbers than Michigan and Penn State.
- 35:48Speaker 2: So CBS this week is picking third.
- 35:51Speaker 3: They rotate between the second and third picks with NBC
- 35:54Speaker 3: every week. That's the way the contract is built, which
- 35:58Speaker 3: means network, over-the-air television, From the time noon hits with
- 36:02Speaker 3: big noon, and that, of course, is the big game
- 36:05Speaker 3: this week, Indiana and Ohio State for Joel and Gus.
- 36:09Speaker 3: So the fact that that fourth game is as good
- 36:13Speaker 3: as this one is between Nebraska and Oregon, that's part
- 36:17Speaker 3: of the scheduling process that I think can be fixed,
- 36:20Speaker 3: that can be repaired. They need to spread these games out.
- 36:23Speaker 3: with marquee teams that we know. And if you did
- 36:26Speaker 3: an NFL scheduling approach where you had real good people
- 36:30Speaker 3: that know a little something about scheduling and how to
- 36:33Speaker 3: maximize the opportunities for viewers to see the best games
- 36:37Speaker 3: week after week after week, we wouldn't have these weeks
- 36:39Speaker 3: where there's all these great games and then other weeks
- 36:42Speaker 3: where it's like, oh man, where are some good games?
- 36:44Speaker 2: I can't find them.
- 36:45Speaker 1: You know what I think would happen, though?
- 36:47Speaker 2: We don't have these kinds of matchups, too.
- 36:49Speaker 1: I think we would end up having games on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday,
- 36:52Speaker 1: you know.
- 36:53Speaker 2: Yeah, and I don't think we want that.
- 36:55Speaker 1: No, no.
- 36:55Speaker 3: So we need to spread the schedule out so teams
- 36:59Speaker 3: that bring that kind of marquee value are spread out.
- 37:03Speaker 2: But that's the reason the game wound up where it did.
- 37:06Speaker 3: And I predicted to our guys at Fox, I said,
- 37:08Speaker 3: you know, they're still going to take Penn State and Michigan.
- 37:12Speaker 3: In that 330 window, which is what CBS has, that's
- 37:16Speaker 3: a business decision that's a better business decision for them.
- 37:20Speaker 3: And regardless of what happened to them the last couple
- 37:22Speaker 3: of weeks, they were going to take that game over
- 37:25Speaker 3: going out to do teams that lost the prior week.
- 37:29Speaker 3: Oregon's coming off a home loss. Nebraska is coming off
- 37:33Speaker 3: a home loss. but they both have great stories to tell.
- 37:36Speaker 3: Oregon can't afford another loss.
- 37:38Speaker 2: They can't.
- 37:40Speaker 3: They're supposed to be in the playoff, which means they
- 37:42Speaker 3: got to win every game now. And Nebraska is still
- 37:45Speaker 3: looking for that elusive, get over the hump, big win.
- 37:48Speaker 3: And the irony here is I think they are capable
- 37:51Speaker 3: of beating Oregon, and yet Oregon won't be ranked.
- 37:54Speaker 2: So that stat about the O for the last 31,
- 37:57Speaker 2: it gets arranged. It wouldn't change.
- 38:00Speaker 3: Even though we know that or Oregon is the team
- 38:03Speaker 3: that is a, you know, a perennial top 25 team,
- 38:08Speaker 3: top 15, top 10 team. So it's still beneficial for
- 38:11Speaker 3: Nebraska to win the game. The storylines here are incredible.
- 38:15Speaker 3: The w what are they going to do with Ryola
- 38:18Speaker 3: at Oregon? He w he left Nebraska Husker fans can't
- 38:22Speaker 3: stand him because he didn't produce after being such a
- 38:25Speaker 3: celebrated freshman coming in. Ryola did the right thing, but
- 38:28Speaker 3: you see what happened when he started, he didn't deliver
- 38:30Speaker 3: when he had to come in because of injury, man,
- 38:34Speaker 3: he looked like people were anointing him as, you know,
- 38:38Speaker 3: a first round draft pick this year after.
- 38:40Speaker 2: The way he played. See, we, everybody just remembers what
- 38:44Speaker 2: happened most recently.
- 38:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 38:46Speaker 3: And they don't understand the consistency issues that we have sometimes,
- 38:50Speaker 3: particularly at the mission-critical position. And now, without Iyamaya Lava,
- 38:55Speaker 3: who is hurt and out for a good part of
- 38:58Speaker 3: the time, it looks like Diefenbach is going to be
- 39:01Speaker 3: the guy, the guy that was fighting with Madden Iyamaya Lava,
- 39:05Speaker 3: the brother of Niko, to be the starter. And boy,
- 39:09Speaker 3: did he look good when he came in, made the
- 39:12Speaker 3: big pass that turned out to be the game-winner. So,
- 39:15Speaker 3: The storylines for this game that we've got are impeccable.
- 39:19Speaker 3: And Devin and I are both excited about it.
- 39:22Speaker 1: Hey, man, I love the late games. But, you know, hey,
- 39:26Speaker 1: speaking of schedule, I'm curious about this. When the networks
- 39:29Speaker 1: are selecting these games, is there a conference call or
- 39:32Speaker 1: is this just like, hey, stack the games you want
- 39:33Speaker 1: to order and everyone gets selected based on who drafts
- 39:37Speaker 1: which game and you get your top game that's listed next?
- 39:40Speaker 1: How does that go down? And the fact that, like,
- 39:43Speaker 1: Clay has said and talked with people that Tennessee is
- 39:47Speaker 1: pissed off for greatness. that they didn't get a night
- 39:49Speaker 1: game here with Alabama this week. Like how much of
- 39:53Speaker 1: that chatter do you hear?
- 39:54Speaker 2: Well, y'all all, all the time. We hear it always. Okay.
- 39:58Speaker 2: Fans are going to be pissed no matter what.
- 40:01Speaker 3: Uh, and, uh, as it relates to the conversations, those
- 40:05Speaker 3: conversations happen preseason when the drafting of games begins, there's
- 40:09Speaker 3: an overall draft of best games that, that the networks have, um,
- 40:17Speaker 3: And that's where there.
- 40:18Speaker 2: Is cooperation between ESPN and Fox. You've got the kickoff
- 40:23Speaker 2: time and stuff. Yeah, with the Big 12 especially.
- 40:27Speaker 3: Now, it's NBC, CBS, and Fox, obviously, with the Big 10.
- 40:32Speaker 3: So the conversations are held then. We were in a
- 40:36Speaker 3: six-day mode. I didn't know until Sunday afternoon at about
- 40:40Speaker 3: 2.30 or 3 o'clock which game we were going to
- 40:43Speaker 3: get because it took that long for CBS to determine
- 40:47Speaker 3: they were going to stay with that Michigan-Penn State game,
- 40:50Speaker 3: which is what they did.
- 40:51Speaker 1: But....
- 40:53Speaker 3: No, the conversation stops once the season gets rolling. So
- 40:57Speaker 3: you're picking usually on Monday for the game Saturday week,
- 41:01Speaker 3: which is 12 days out.
- 41:02Speaker 1: Right.
- 41:02Speaker 3: But because of the balance this year, we've got another six.
- 41:06Speaker 2: Days this week coming up.
- 41:08Speaker 3: It's TVA for a week from Saturday for us again.
- 41:11Speaker 3: And because of the balance that's out there and because
- 41:14Speaker 3: how games this week affect interest levels for the games
- 41:18Speaker 3: next week, you have to wait for six days. and
- 41:22Speaker 3: let those games this weekend play out. I do have
- 41:25Speaker 3: a little bone to pick with Clay about something. I'm
- 41:27Speaker 3: glad you mentioned his name.
- 41:28Speaker 1: Go ahead.
- 41:29Speaker 2: And by the way, you know we're friends.
- 41:30Speaker 1: Yeah, I do.
- 41:31Speaker 2: We've known each other for quite a while.
- 41:33Speaker 3: But he was talking about, you know, the early games
- 41:37Speaker 3: and how he brought up that– you remember those games
- 41:41Speaker 3: in the 90s, those Jefferson Pilot games?
- 41:44Speaker 1: Oh, God.
- 41:45Speaker 3: Those games that were on at 1230 and– And it
- 41:49Speaker 3: was always Mississippi and Vanderbilt.
- 41:53Speaker 2: Let me tell you something.
- 41:55Speaker 3: Clay, his memory is hurting him just a little bit.
- 41:59Speaker 3: And I'll remind Clay that I did those games for
- 42:02Speaker 3: a three-year period before I went to CBS and after
- 42:05Speaker 3: I left ESPN. In those days, that was during the
- 42:10Speaker 3: College Football Association days, the CFA days. And CBS had
- 42:14Speaker 3: the number one pick in the CFA, which meant all
- 42:17Speaker 3: the teams outside of the Big Ten and Pac-10.
- 42:20Speaker 2: So ACC, SEC, Big Eight at the time, later Big 12.
- 42:25Speaker 2: Big 12, yeah. And Notre Dame. Those were all members
- 42:28Speaker 2: of the CFA.
- 42:29Speaker 3: So Musburger's game in the afternoon and Ron Franklin and
- 42:34Speaker 3: Mike Gottfried's game in primetime Generally speaking, we're going to
- 42:39Speaker 3: be SEC games or at least 65, 70% of the
- 42:42Speaker 3: time we're going to be SEC games. Now this was
- 42:45Speaker 3: before they added A & M in Missouri, before they
- 42:49Speaker 3: added Texas and Oklahoma. So it was a smaller conference
- 42:52Speaker 3: at that time, but there were only three games being televised.
- 42:57Speaker 3: So after that, if you wanted to see a game that,
- 43:01Speaker 3: not involving the six teams that were going to be
- 43:02Speaker 3: on one of those three networks. The Jefferson pilot game
- 43:06Speaker 3: was an sec only game.
- 43:08Speaker 2: Yes. Going to a region of the country.
- 43:11Speaker 3: But if you weren't in one of those three games,
- 43:14Speaker 3: you were going to play in that game and that
- 43:16Speaker 3: game only the other games either weren't televised or they
- 43:19Speaker 3: were on closed circuit cable television in your low, in
- 43:22Speaker 3: your locale.
- 43:23Speaker 2: Okay.
- 43:23Speaker 3: The schools could produce the game the way they wanted
- 43:26Speaker 3: and present it to their fans.
- 43:27Speaker 2: And, I had games like LSU, Florida. I had an Auburn,
- 43:31Speaker 2: Georgia game once.
- 43:33Speaker 3: South Carolina was hot one year, and they were playing Tennessee.
- 43:37Speaker 3: Peyton Manning's game with Kentucky, I mean, it was a
- 43:41Speaker 3: track meet, one of the greatest games ever played for
- 43:44Speaker 3: the beer barrel between Tim Couch and Peyton Manning. In fact,
- 43:49Speaker 3: I thought it was going to win Peyton the Heisman Trophy.
- 43:53Speaker 3: That game was on Jefferson Pilot.
- 43:56Speaker 2: That game was on Jefferson Pilot. Now the following week.
- 44:00Speaker 3: I was also doing, this was before I went in
- 44:02Speaker 3: to host the college football today. So it was 97.
- 44:06Speaker 3: The final game that Peyton played at home was against Vanderbilt.
- 44:09Speaker 3: What caused him to Heisman was Woody Woodenhofer's defense with
- 44:13Speaker 3: Corey Javis and all those guys. They were like the
- 44:16Speaker 3: number seven defense in the country. Woodenhofer's defense snuffed out Manning,
- 44:21Speaker 3: Terry Fair, Peerless Price, all those guys. I mean, they
- 44:24Speaker 3: had an unbelievable team, great running backs too. You remember
- 44:28Speaker 3: how good they were. But they were stifled in that game,
- 44:32Speaker 3: and that was the day that Woodson went off with
- 44:34Speaker 3: the interception.
- 44:35Speaker 2: Pick six, punt return for touchdown in the game with
- 44:38Speaker 2: Ohio State. That's what cost Manning anything.
- 44:40Speaker 3: The Heisman in my view that that final weekend, but the,
- 44:44Speaker 3: the Tim couch Peyton Manning tracked me and it was
- 44:48Speaker 3: a hell of a game. Tennessee had to score a
- 44:49Speaker 3: bunch to win that game. I did that game on
- 44:53Speaker 3: Jefferson Pilot. So those games that were on JP weren't
- 44:55Speaker 3: always bad games. They weren't substandard games, but that's because
- 44:59Speaker 3: it was the third possible game that you could have
- 45:01Speaker 3: televised in the SEC. Well, now every game's televised. So
- 45:06Speaker 3: that was the world we were in 30 years ago.
- 45:12Speaker 3: And people weren't bitching about the Jefferson pilot game the
- 45:15Speaker 3: way they bitch about being on CBS or NBC or
- 45:20Speaker 3: ESPN or ABC at noon.
- 45:23Speaker 2: They didn't bitch about it. They were happy, except in
- 45:25Speaker 2: Baton Rouge.
- 45:26Speaker 3: I got booed in Baton Rouge every time LSU played
- 45:30Speaker 3: an 1130 game.
- 45:31Speaker 2: I'm from Louisiana. And it was like, get the hell
- 45:34Speaker 2: out of here. What are you doing here?
- 45:36Speaker 3: I couldn't even get a sniff of good jambalaya when
- 45:40Speaker 3: I was coming up.
- 45:40Speaker 2: Through the tailgate parties. It was awful.
- 45:44Speaker 1: Coming up, I'm going to get to some stories of
- 45:49Speaker 1: the past. I love your stories. I'm going to ask
- 45:53Speaker 1: you during the break if you have some stories about
- 45:54Speaker 1: a particular person coming up. So the Kentucky storylines. And
- 46:01Speaker 1: the LSU storyline, the two coaches and what we've seen,
- 46:03Speaker 1: especially straight ahead here on Hutton and Withrow.
