- 0:17Speaker 1: Wednesday and getting over the hump, right? Hopefully we can
- 0:22Speaker 1: help you do that. Good afternoon, everybody.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Welcome.
- 0:25Speaker 1: To a Wednesday edition, a Yacht Rock Wednesday edition of
- 0:28Speaker 1: the program here on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone.
- 0:31Speaker 1: My name is Craig White. Thanks so much for joining us.
- 0:34Speaker 1: As I always say, if Wednesday is truly your hump day,
- 0:38Speaker 1: hopefully we help you get over the hill and on
- 0:42Speaker 1: the downhill run to the weekend.
- 0:45Speaker 2: For those of you, especially the.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Friends of Jake Herman, for whom their work week actually
- 0:50Speaker 1: begins on a Wednesday. then hopefully gets off to a
- 0:54Speaker 1: good start and for those of you that Wednesday is
- 0:59Speaker 1: at the end of your work week good on you
- 1:02Speaker 1: good for you I hope you enjoy your next two
- 1:05Speaker 1: days on today's program it heavily weighted as you might
- 1:10Speaker 1: imagine college football pro football it's opening night in the
- 1:13Speaker 1: National Football League it's weird to say that about a
- 1:16Speaker 1: Wednesday isn't it but it is With a Super Bowl rematch,
- 1:19Speaker 1: the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks will take on
- 1:22Speaker 1: the New England Patriots.
- 1:23Speaker 2: We'll talk a little bit about that.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Also, we'll take a look around at some other topics
- 1:30Speaker 1: in the NFL. We're going to hear from Brian Schottenheimer,
- 1:32Speaker 1: the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, his thoughts on
- 1:35Speaker 1: his team as they get ready to debut the 2026
- 1:41Speaker 1: NFL season on Sunday night against the New York Giants.
- 1:46Speaker 1: So we'll hear from Shadi coming up on that. College football,
- 1:50Speaker 1: there's plenty to discuss. First of all, from the national perspective,
- 1:56Speaker 1: all the stuff about LSU taking the latest turns that
- 1:59Speaker 1: it's taken and some interesting rhetoric that's gone down there. Also,
- 2:04Speaker 1: we kind of have some clarification. To some, it might
- 2:08Speaker 1: sound as clear as mud, but there is some NCAA-released
- 2:13Speaker 1: clarification material on clocks now in the aftermath of Michigan,
- 2:19Speaker 1: Western Michigan, last Saturday night and how maybe this thing
- 2:22Speaker 1: will be adjudicated properly going forward. And then of course,
- 2:26Speaker 1: there's this matchup on Saturday night here in town as
- 2:31Speaker 1: the fourth ranked Longhorns will play a number three in
- 2:33Speaker 1: the coaches poll.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Number four in the AP will play host.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Everybody's number one, number one across the board, the Ohio
- 2:39Speaker 1: state Buckeyes. And, We'll hear from Lance Jackson, the Longhorn
- 2:44Speaker 1: sophomore defensive end.
- 2:46Speaker 2: We'll hear from him.
- 2:46Speaker 1: But also, from the Buckeye perspective, coming up in the
- 2:50Speaker 1: 3 o'clock hour, we'll visit with Paul Keels, the play-by-play
- 2:53Speaker 1: voice of the Ohio State Buckeyes.
- 2:55Speaker 2: So we'll get his thoughts on this matchup.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Paul and I have known each other a long time
- 3:00Speaker 1: and popped on each other's shows and all that other
- 3:02Speaker 1: kind of stuff. And so it's always good to visit
- 3:04Speaker 1: with him. In fact, the two of us appeared simultaneously
- 3:08Speaker 1: on a national podcast on Monday night to talk about
- 3:12Speaker 1: this matchup. So Paul Kiels will join us in the
- 3:16Speaker 1: three o'clock hour. As always, we're more than happy to
- 3:19Speaker 1: take your questions, your thoughts, your comments. You need only
- 3:23Speaker 1: text us on the text line. The way you do
- 3:25Speaker 1: that is you text the word Texas, followed by your question.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Or comment to 81530.
- 3:31Speaker 1: So text the word Texas, followed by your question or
- 3:33Speaker 1: comment to 81530. Standard messaging and data rates may apply.
- 3:38Speaker 1: You can also reach us with your voice and actually
- 3:41Speaker 1: have it aired, where your voice would be heard on
- 3:44Speaker 1: the air as long as it's clean and not objectionable content.
- 3:50Speaker 1: In other words, in the vernacular of the Federal Communications Commission,
- 3:55Speaker 1: safe harbor.
- 3:58Speaker 2: No obscene or that type of thing.
- 4:02Speaker 1: But anyway, if you want to leave us a message,
- 4:03Speaker 1: all you have to do is, if you don't already
- 4:06Speaker 1: have it downloaded, just download the iHeartRadio app on your smartphone,
- 4:10Speaker 1: be it iPhone, Android, the little red iHeart logo with
- 4:17Speaker 1: a white heart in the middle of it. You download that.
- 4:19Speaker 1: It's real easy to do, and it's free. It doesn't
- 4:20Speaker 1: cost anything to do that. When you have it downloaded,
- 4:24Speaker 1: you go to your search bar, search window, and type
- 4:28Speaker 1: in AM13 under the zone. And as you do it,
- 4:30Speaker 1: it'll come up. It'll pop straight up. And then once
- 4:33Speaker 1: it does, you'll see two buttons. One's a little white
- 4:36Speaker 1: triangular button. You press that if you just want to
- 4:38Speaker 1: listen to what's going on in the air.
- 4:39Speaker 2: It's a great way to listen to us out of
- 4:40Speaker 2: town and That sort of thing.
- 4:42Speaker 1: The other button, and this is where the talkback comes in,
- 4:45Speaker 1: is a little red button with a white microphone in it.
- 4:48Speaker 1: You press that button and you can leave us a
- 4:49Speaker 1: voice message up to 30 seconds. This is the same
- 4:52Speaker 1: way when we do our contesting to give away the
- 4:55Speaker 1: copies of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, which we do.
- 4:59Speaker 1: or concert tickets, stuff like that. We do it through
- 5:02Speaker 1: the TalkBack microphone on the iHeartRadio app. And you can
- 5:05Speaker 1: just leave us a voice message if you want to
- 5:07Speaker 1: ask us a question about a topic or give your opinion.
- 5:10Speaker 1: We're more than happy to do that. Jake Herman is
- 5:13Speaker 1: our producer today. I did watch a little bit of
- 5:17Speaker 1: your Washington Nationals last night and saw them blow their 38th.
- 5:22Speaker 3: I had a front row seat to it on the radio, Craig,
- 5:25Speaker 3: after I was driving home from a five-set thriller of
- 5:28Speaker 3: a volleyball match I called over at Bastrop where the
- 5:31Speaker 3: Anderson Trojans pulled off a reverse sweep, got a win there.
- 5:35Speaker 3: That brought me to the front seat of the car
- 5:40Speaker 3: for a spot just in time in the front row
- 5:44Speaker 3: to hear the great but dejected Dave Jagler on the
- 5:48Speaker 3: call for the Nationals radio network. Well, they wanted him
- 5:54Speaker 3: to get through the eighth, but he's going to leave
- 5:57Speaker 3: without recording a single out.
- 5:58Speaker 4: And I thought, is this really happening tonight?
- 6:00Speaker 2: Unbelievable.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:02Speaker 4: Manny Machado did the damage.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Yeah, he did. He had a big hit. They were down.
- 6:06Speaker 1: The Nationals had a 4-1 lead. And the Padres scored
- 6:11Speaker 1: four in the bottom of the eighth and won 5-4.
- 6:13Speaker 3: I follow this team pretty well. They're bringing guys out
- 6:16Speaker 3: of the bullpen that I don't know. got call-ups right
- 6:20Speaker 3: and to their credit they're not letting the same guys
- 6:22Speaker 3: go out there and fail over and over again but
- 6:25Speaker 3: my gosh craig.
- 6:26Speaker 1: They're spreading the lack of wealth yeah in other words.
- 6:30Speaker 3: They've got a guy like tolman's got the ninth now
- 6:33Speaker 3: it's it's his ninth inning he he's only been.
- 6:35Speaker 1: On the team like a month yeah so i you
- 6:39Speaker 1: know i i call a little bit of that when
- 6:41Speaker 1: i was flipping back and forth between that and and
- 6:43Speaker 1: then uh the dodgers game um And, uh, this is
- 6:48Speaker 1: going to be some really interesting races on that. And
- 6:50Speaker 1: we mentioned the Padres. They are like a half game
- 6:52Speaker 1: back of the diamond backs as they fight for that, uh,
- 6:56Speaker 1: third and final wild card spot in the national league,
- 6:59Speaker 1: the Brewers ninth inning rally or eighth inning rally that
- 7:04Speaker 1: ended with the Jackson Cheerio home run. They rallied to
- 7:07Speaker 1: beat the Cubs again. They're closing in. They're the first
- 7:09Speaker 1: team to get to 90 wins and they're closing in on, uh,
- 7:12Speaker 1: clinching that division. And, uh, They're still up a game
- 7:17Speaker 1: and a half on Los Angeles for the top seed
- 7:21Speaker 1: in the National League. And I was thinking about something,
- 7:23Speaker 1: and sure enough, on the Dodger telecast, Joe Davis brought
- 7:25Speaker 1: it up. If you're in the National League, in the
- 7:28Speaker 1: National League, do you really want to be the one
- 7:31Speaker 1: seed or do you want to be the two seed?
- 7:32Speaker 1: Think about what the matchup could be. Right now, if
- 7:35Speaker 1: the season ended today, the one seed, which would get
- 7:38Speaker 1: a bye, would play the wild card winner, the four
- 7:42Speaker 1: versus five. And right now, that'd be the Phillies versus
- 7:45Speaker 1: the Cubs. If you're the two seed, you're playing the
- 7:49Speaker 1: winner of the three versus six. Now, while it's not
- 7:51Speaker 1: a guaranteed bargain, right now that would be the Braves against.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Either the Diamondbacks or the Padres.
- 7:58Speaker 1: Now, would you rather face the Braves, Diamondbacks, or Padres,
- 8:02Speaker 1: or would you rather face the Phillies or Cubs?
- 8:06Speaker 4: I'll take the.
- 8:08Speaker 3: Braves, Diamondbacks, or Padres. The Braves made their hay early
- 8:12Speaker 3: on in the season. The Cubs offense right now has
- 8:15Speaker 3: been on another level. I mean, PCA might, I mean,
- 8:19Speaker 3: he's the MVP probably. So I don't want to see that.
- 8:22Speaker 2: He is. He's going to be the MVP.
- 8:24Speaker 3: And the Phillies, those frontline starters in a best-of-five series, no,
- 8:30Speaker 3: I want Atlanta or the other winner.
- 8:31Speaker 1: And meanwhile, the Phillies have been only able to make
- 8:34Speaker 1: nominal progress in trying to catch Atlanta in the National
- 8:38Speaker 1: League East.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Because both teams have stumbled.
- 8:40Speaker 1: The Phillies got beat by the Astros last night, who
- 8:43Speaker 1: are trying to hold off the Rangers in the American
- 8:45Speaker 1: League West, and still up two games on Texas, and
- 8:48Speaker 1: the Rangers got a win up in Seattle last night.
- 8:50Speaker 2: So those two continue.
- 8:52Speaker 1: Their fight, even though they, you know, just barely hovering
- 8:56Speaker 1: around above or beneath the 500 mark. Again, I've been
- 9:01Speaker 1: saying it for the past two months, this really and
- 9:04Speaker 1: truly could be the year that we see a division
- 9:07Speaker 1: winner with a sub-500 record. We've seen it in the NFL.
- 9:12Speaker 1: The Seahawks had it at 7-9. I think the Saints
- 9:18Speaker 1: had it once at 7-9.
- 9:19Speaker 3: Washington football team, I think, had it in that shortened season.
- 9:22Speaker 3: The Taylor Heineke team.
- 9:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:26Speaker 1: But in Major League Baseball, we've not seen that, even
- 9:29Speaker 1: with the expansion of the playoffs, even with expansion of teams,
- 9:32Speaker 1: even with expansion... of the divisional alignment. We've not seen
- 9:36Speaker 1: a sub-500 team win a division. In fact, we've not
- 9:40Speaker 1: seen a sub-500 team make the playoffs. Now, we've seen
- 9:43Speaker 1: teams that were 82-80 win the whole thing. The Cardinals
- 9:47Speaker 1: did that in 06. The Mets, who had one less
- 9:51Speaker 1: game that had gotten rained out, went 82-79 and got
- 9:54Speaker 1: to game seven of the World Series against the defending
- 9:58Speaker 1: world champion Oakland A's.
- 10:00Speaker 2: In 1973 and then lost to the A's. So....
- 10:05Speaker 4: They passed the Nats last night, by the way.
- 10:08Speaker 2: The Mets did?
- 10:08Speaker 4: Yeah, depressingly so.
- 10:10Speaker 2: They put the Nats into the basement now?
- 10:12Speaker 4: Back in the basement they go.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Okay.
- 10:15Speaker 1: So I do think we're going to see some really
- 10:20Speaker 1: spirited battles down the stretch. Probably, to me, the most
- 10:24Speaker 1: fascinating is going to be the American League West.
- 10:26Speaker 4: Yeah, you got a good matchup tonight.
- 10:27Speaker 3: Hunter Brown versus Christopher Sanchez, two of my favorite pitchers
- 10:30Speaker 3: to watch.
- 10:31Speaker 2: That's Phillies-Astros that's going on.
- 10:33Speaker 1: The Rangers continue that series, which if they, I think
- 10:36Speaker 1: if the Rangers win another game there in Seattle, it
- 10:38Speaker 1: pretty much puts the Mariners on the shelf for trying
- 10:40Speaker 1: to be the wild card. Because that's the other fascinating
- 10:44Speaker 1: thing out of this, and that is, the race to
- 10:47Speaker 1: be that third wild card in the American League. I
- 10:51Speaker 1: don't know if you guys have looked at it, and
- 10:53Speaker 1: the Rangers are right there in the thick of the fight,
- 10:56Speaker 1: but in case you haven't seen it, the chase for
- 11:00Speaker 1: that third wild card spot right now has Cleveland holding
- 11:06Speaker 1: a one-game lead on Toronto. Remember the Blue Jays who
- 11:10Speaker 1: came within a whisker, an eyelash? on multiple occasions in
- 11:15Speaker 1: Game 7 of winning the World Series. In fact, they
- 11:17Speaker 1: were up three games to two, lost Game 6 at
- 11:19Speaker 1: home to the Dodgers, and in Game 7, probably should
- 11:22Speaker 1: have won it. Had reasonable opportunities there. There was a
- 11:26Speaker 1: big play made by Miguel Rojas to get a forced
- 11:29Speaker 1: play at the plate, and then Rojas hits the game-tying homer,
- 11:33Speaker 1: and then you have that crazy collision out in left field.
- 11:36Speaker 1: The catch, they gave away a bobblehead the other night
- 11:39Speaker 1: at Dodger Stadium for the catch with That's awesome. Where
- 11:42Speaker 1: you had Andy Pius and Quique Hernandez colliding with one another.
- 11:49Speaker 2: And, you know, you had that.
- 11:51Speaker 1: And then, of course, it took the Will Smith home
- 11:53Speaker 1: run in the 10th or the 11th to get them
- 11:57Speaker 1: in position to win it. The Blue Jays were that
- 11:59Speaker 1: close to winning the World Series. And then they started
- 12:02Speaker 1: off dreadfully. And they had a lot of guys injured.
- 12:05Speaker 1: But they were really, really down. And now of late,
- 12:08Speaker 1: they've been good. They've won seven of their last 10.
- 12:11Speaker 1: And now Toronto is just one game back of the
- 12:14Speaker 1: guardians for the third wildcard spot. The Rangers are only
- 12:18Speaker 1: game and a half off the pace. And then you
- 12:21Speaker 1: have Baltimore at four back Minnesota at four and a half.
- 12:23Speaker 1: And I think that's about it because Seattle six and
- 12:25Speaker 1: a half back, if they lose again to the Rangers,
- 12:27Speaker 1: I think that puts them away. And Detroit has really
- 12:29Speaker 1: fallen off of late to both of those teams. Seattle
- 12:31Speaker 1: and Detroit who, uh, of course had that memorable playoff
- 12:34Speaker 1: series a year ago are, uh, are now seven and, um,
- 12:40Speaker 1: six and a half and seven and a half back.
- 12:41Speaker 2: And they both dropped seven of their last 10 games.
- 12:44Speaker 3: The blue Jays are just piecing this thing together. I mean,
- 12:47Speaker 3: they've got a 24 year old rookie who plays center field,
- 12:51Speaker 3: Brett Bateman.
- 12:52Speaker 4: He's been leading off for them the last few days.
- 12:54Speaker 3: And then their number two guy is Charles McAdoo, who
- 12:58Speaker 3: I think Cameron Parker called his games four or five
- 13:00Speaker 3: years ago up in the, in the league he was
- 13:02Speaker 3: working for in South Dakota.
- 13:04Speaker 2: That's right. In that wood bat league. That's right.
- 13:06Speaker 3: So they've got two guys that are relatively anonymous and,
- 13:09Speaker 3: at the top of their lineup, Vladdy's OPS is under 700.
- 13:13Speaker 3: They completely snatched defeat from the jaws of victory two
- 13:16Speaker 3: nights ago in Sacramento.
- 13:17Speaker 4: And yet here they are still knocking on the door.
- 13:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:19Speaker 2: Only one game back.
- 13:21Speaker 1: Uh, and, and I should point out, uh, in terms
- 13:24Speaker 1: of the division leaders, and we're going to visit with
- 13:25Speaker 1: Gene Watson before the week is out as well. Uh,
- 13:28Speaker 1: his team, the Chicago White Sox, uh, which has been
- 13:31Speaker 1: the story of the year, I think from a team perspective,
- 13:34Speaker 1: a major league baseball, two years removed from 121 losses.
- 13:36Speaker 2: And then, uh, Another huge.
- 13:38Speaker 4: Yeah, them and the Rays.
- 13:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:42Speaker 1: The White Sox continue to lead, but the lead on
- 13:45Speaker 1: the Guardians is down to two. So Cleveland is sandwiched
- 13:49Speaker 1: in between two out of first place in the division,
- 13:52Speaker 1: but only one ahead of Toronto for the third wildcard spot.
- 13:56Speaker 3: And they haven't gotten much from Jose Ramirez this year.
- 13:59Speaker 3: He has not been the same player with the hand-made
- 14:01Speaker 3: bone injury. The power swing has not been there consistently.
- 14:04Speaker 3: So it's a real testament to Cleveland.
- 14:06Speaker 2: Also.
- 14:08Speaker 1: in case you didn't know, Aaron Judge is back. He
- 14:12Speaker 1: was back in the lineup, although what Aaron Boone pulled
- 14:17Speaker 1: him from the lineup pulled him from the game in
- 14:20Speaker 1: the sixth inning right i saw that he wasn't happy
- 14:22Speaker 1: about it uh yeah but he's but it wasn't disciplinary
- 14:26Speaker 1: it was just you know being cautious with regard to
- 14:29Speaker 1: that so the yankees are four back right now and
- 14:32Speaker 1: they would hold the number one wild card spot the
- 14:34Speaker 1: fourth seed boston would be the five so you imagine
- 14:37Speaker 1: that for a wild card series yankees red sox well.
- 14:39Speaker 3: Could be a repeat of last year does uh does
- 14:42Speaker 3: cam schlittler get redemption his counterpart who he lost that
- 14:45Speaker 3: game to connelly early is now a national Yeah, that's.
- 14:47Speaker 2: That's very true.
- 14:49Speaker 1: And then, like I said, the Rangers are two back
- 14:51Speaker 1: of Houston and Seattle Seminole to pay.
- 14:52Speaker 2: So they're fading away.
- 14:54Speaker 1: So now it looks like it's going to be a
- 14:55Speaker 1: two team race in the West Astros and Rangers. And
- 14:58Speaker 1: in the national league, I mentioned the Phillies are four
- 15:01Speaker 1: back of Atlanta, but they're only, they've only won six
- 15:04Speaker 1: of their last 10 while the Braves are five and five.
- 15:06Speaker 1: So they've only been able to make nominal progress. However,
- 15:09Speaker 1: They got another series with the Braves coming up. They
- 15:11Speaker 1: just came off splitting the four games. They got three
- 15:13Speaker 1: more with Atlanta coming up.
- 15:14Speaker 3: Craig, and the Braves have a guy back by the
- 15:16Speaker 3: name of Ronald Acuna Jr., who's been in and out
- 15:19Speaker 3: of the lineup all season long. But when he has played,
- 15:22Speaker 3: he has played like an MVP.
- 15:23Speaker 1: Brewers closing in on clinching the Central and the Dodgers,
- 15:28Speaker 1: likewise in the West. I think L.A. 's magic number
- 15:31Speaker 1: is seven. for clenching the West. Dave Roberts was asked
- 15:34Speaker 1: last night, what do you think about it? How do
- 15:35Speaker 1: you feel about that? You're seven back.
- 15:36Speaker 2: He goes, good.
- 15:37Speaker 1: I want to be six. I want the magic number
- 15:38Speaker 1: to be six. He wants to get a step closer
- 15:40Speaker 1: to that. And it's more of an emphasis, I think,
- 15:43Speaker 1: this year than I've ever heard the Dodgers talk about
- 15:45Speaker 1: getting a bye. And that's because of the slew of
- 15:48Speaker 1: injuries they've had to their pitching. Shohei Otani pretty much
- 15:51Speaker 1: admitted yesterday he's not going to pitch again this year.
- 15:54Speaker 1: He's just trying to get himself healthy to help the
- 15:56Speaker 1: team with the bat. But their starting pitching doesn't really
- 16:02Speaker 1: need it if it if it performs like it started
- 16:04Speaker 1: to now Tarek Skubal had easily his best game as
- 16:07Speaker 1: a Dodger last night pitched into the eighth inning and
- 16:10Speaker 1: got the win for them over Cincinnati uh Tyler Glass
- 16:13Speaker 1: now has been good um uh Blake Snell has been
- 16:17Speaker 1: good and then of course oh yeah you got that
- 16:18Speaker 1: other guy he's going tonight Yamamoto.
- 16:20Speaker 3: Yeah I listened to the end of that game last
- 16:22Speaker 3: night and the Dodger broadcast was still talking about that
- 16:24Speaker 3: De La Cruz homer into the eighth the only blemish
- 16:27Speaker 3: for Skubal.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Yeah the You know, you can pull that up. Go
- 16:33Speaker 1: ahead and Google search that thing. They said it was
- 16:36Speaker 1: 444 feet. I thought it went farther because it seemed
- 16:39Speaker 1: to go through the stands to the concourse.
- 16:42Speaker 4: Can you imagine somebody standing in line to.
- 16:44Speaker 1: Buy a Dodger dog and a cold malted beverage and
- 16:49Speaker 1: all of a sudden the ball.
- 16:49Speaker 2: Just skips up beside them?
- 16:51Speaker 1: As I think it was Oral Hershiser said on the telecast,
- 16:55Speaker 1: there was a fan who got a souvenir who wasn't
- 16:57Speaker 1: planning on it. it came skipping through last night on
- 17:00Speaker 1: that long home run from LA Dela Cruz, who has
- 17:04Speaker 1: been great of late for the reds. He he's been a,
- 17:07Speaker 1: he's been a problem and for opposing teams. And he
- 17:09Speaker 1: said home runs against LA pitching the last two nights.
- 17:12Speaker 1: It hasn't helped them ultimately because the rest of their
- 17:14Speaker 1: lineup has been there. The reds, uh, their, their big
- 17:18Speaker 1: thing is home runs. And then otherwise they're striking out
- 17:22Speaker 1: a lot. So, uh, that's, you know, that's, It has
- 17:26Speaker 1: not worked so well for them in this series, so
- 17:28Speaker 1: we'll see how it.
- 17:28Speaker 2: Goes from there.
- 17:29Speaker 1: All right, coming up, I wanted to clear the deck
- 17:32Speaker 1: off of that. We're going to come back and talk
- 17:34Speaker 1: some football. We'll hear from Lance Jackson. We'll also hear
- 17:39Speaker 1: from Brian Schottenheimer. We do have Inconceivable this hour. And
- 17:44Speaker 1: then next hour, Paul Keels, play-by-play voice of the Ohio
- 17:47Speaker 1: State Buckeyes, joins us, among others. All right, we'll continue
- 17:49Speaker 1: right here on a Yacht Rock Wednesday on Sports Radio
- 17:52Speaker 1: AM 13 Under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app. It's
- 18:03Speaker 1: a Yacht Rock Wednesday here on Sports Radio AM 13
- 18:07Speaker 1: under the zone. This is another one of the examples
- 18:11Speaker 1: of those songs that kind of predates what supposedly is
- 18:16Speaker 1: the chronological timeline of Yacht Rock's rise, late 70s to mid-80s.
- 18:23Speaker 1: This precedes it by a few years in the earlier
- 18:25Speaker 1: 70s as Shy Lights. With O'Girl, my broadcast partner on
- 18:32Speaker 1: Longhorn Basketball, Eddie Orton, big.
- 18:33Speaker 2: Fan of the Shy Lights.
- 18:35Speaker 4: I've never heard of the Shy Lights.
- 18:37Speaker 1: We've played another one of their bigger hits before, too,
- 18:41Speaker 1: on this program. You know who did a really good
- 18:44Speaker 1: cover of this? And you could hear it if you
- 18:45Speaker 1: listened to it. Hall & Oates.
- 18:47Speaker 2: Okay.
- 18:48Speaker 1: They did a good cover of O'Girl. But that's the
- 18:53Speaker 1: original there by the Shy Lights. The other big hit
- 18:55Speaker 1: they have is Have You Seen Her? That's one we've
- 18:59Speaker 1: bounced back with before. Let's bounce back with some Longhorns sound.
- 19:03Speaker 1: Getting you ready for this matchup between the Longhorns and
- 19:06Speaker 1: the Buckeyes. Lance Jackson, the Longhorns' sophomore defensive end. Yes,
- 19:12Speaker 1: a sophomore. But promising as a freshman, and he believes
- 19:17Speaker 1: that the growth has been there for him. going into
- 19:22Speaker 1: and now inclusive of one game in a sophomore campaign?
- 19:25Speaker 5: Definitely way bigger this year because I feel like I
- 19:28Speaker 5: got to do more. Last year, kind of just going
- 19:31Speaker 5: out there, having fun, kind of on the side a
- 19:33Speaker 5: little bit, get a little bit of action. But this year,
- 19:36Speaker 5: got to play all four quarters. It's going to be
- 19:38Speaker 5: a really good game and I'm ready for it.
- 19:40Speaker 1: I think everybody is expecting this to be a really
- 19:43Speaker 1: good game, obviously. I think what I usually don't pay
- 19:46Speaker 1: that much to the to the.
- 19:49Speaker 2: To gambling lines. But what is it? It's like a
- 19:52Speaker 2: point and a half or something like that.
- 19:55Speaker 4: The degenerate gambling lines.
- 19:56Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah.
- 19:57Speaker 2: That's the way you always say it.
- 19:58Speaker 4: It doesn't take a degenerate.
- 20:00Speaker 2: The degenerates, if you're not doing the people.
- 20:02Speaker 3: Degenerate gambling line is like a women's tennis match in
- 20:06Speaker 3: China on a Tuesday night.
- 20:08Speaker 4: This is just people are curious. Who's the favorite, right?
- 20:10Speaker 2: Yeah, right. Yeah.
- 20:11Speaker 1: Some people are curious. Others are more than just curious.
- 20:14Speaker 2: They might have a.
- 20:16Speaker 1: they might have an invested interest in the game as well.
- 20:20Speaker 3: The odds makers like the Longhorns by a one and
- 20:22Speaker 3: a half point spread.
- 20:23Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what I thought.
- 20:24Speaker 1: So, you know, so it's, you know, a point and
- 20:28Speaker 1: a half is where it is right now. And as
- 20:33Speaker 1: a result of that, I really threw you off with that,
- 20:36Speaker 1: didn't I? Well, the degenerate thing, huh?
- 20:39Speaker 3: I just, you know, I know people that are going
- 20:41Speaker 3: to be wagering on this game that are not degenerates.
- 20:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:47Speaker 4: I also know some degenerates.
- 20:48Speaker 2: There you go. What is it?
- 20:52Speaker 1: The line that Bill Shoning used to use when he
- 20:54Speaker 1: would go to the OTB, the off-track betting thing, and
- 20:58Speaker 1: he called one of his friends, and he goes, man,
- 21:01Speaker 1: I was in this off-track betting thing. There's a bunch
- 21:06Speaker 1: of lowlifes and derelicts in there or something. And he
- 21:10Speaker 1: called a friend of his, and to ask about a
- 21:12Speaker 1: certain horse. And the friend said, well, where are you?
- 21:17Speaker 1: And he said, I'm at the off track, I'm at
- 21:20Speaker 1: the OTB at some place like in Wilmington, Delaware. And
- 21:24Speaker 1: the guy goes, with the lowlifes and the derelicts? He said, yeah, yeah,
- 21:29Speaker 1: that's where I am. So I'm not saying everybody is
- 21:34Speaker 1: a low life or a derelict or, you know, uh,
- 21:38Speaker 1: degenerate or whatever. Uh, but, but it is kind of funny.
- 21:41Speaker 1: One thing I never miss is I tried never to
- 21:45Speaker 1: miss a bad beat.
- 21:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:47Speaker 1: Scott van pub because it's just sheer comedy. Play the
- 21:51Speaker 1: fight song.
- 21:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:53Speaker 1: And if you are wagering on things like first half
- 21:58Speaker 1: point totals of an FCS game, you have become a
- 22:02Speaker 1: lowlife or a derelict or something like that.
- 22:05Speaker 3: I saw a great tweet referencing bad beats. They always say, hey,
- 22:08Speaker 3: that team such and such signed up for 60. I
- 22:11Speaker 3: saw a tweet, Western Michigan signed up for 60-00. You
- 22:19Speaker 3: feel sorry for them.
- 22:20Speaker 1: And like I said, we've got some things about that
- 22:23Speaker 1: to talk about. But anyway, Lance Jackson was asked, you know,
- 22:27Speaker 1: as big a game as this is, coaches always like
- 22:32Speaker 1: to say it has to be just another game. So
- 22:35Speaker 1: he was asked, can it be treated as just another game?
- 22:38Speaker 5: Yeah, I feel like it's definitely just like another game.
- 22:40Speaker 5: There may be tweaks in your game plan, but it
- 22:42Speaker 5: definitely is just another game. I mean, we're going to
- 22:44Speaker 5: prepare just like we did last week for Texas State.
- 22:47Speaker 5: We don't kind of, like I said, there's more on
- 22:50Speaker 5: the game plan, but you kind of just treat it
- 22:51Speaker 5: like last week. I mean, we're going to treat this
- 22:53Speaker 5: week like next week and the next week after that.
- 22:55Speaker 5: I feel like you don't really look at a team
- 22:57Speaker 5: and be like, oh, I may practice harder this week
- 22:59Speaker 5: or I'm going to go a little bit harder this
- 23:00Speaker 5: week because I'm playing Ohio State.
- 23:02Speaker 2: Every week, you've got to come with it.
- 23:03Speaker 1: A lot has already been made and will continue to
- 23:06Speaker 1: be made of Hiro Kanu going up against his former team.
- 23:09Speaker 1: He was on the team two years ago that beat
- 23:10Speaker 1: Texas in the Cotton Bowl in the college football playoff semifinals. Obviously,
- 23:14Speaker 1: he played for Texas in the season opener in Columbus
- 23:16Speaker 1: last week. And Hiro has been saying, look, and we
- 23:20Speaker 1: had some of the sound of that. He said, I'm not.
- 23:23Speaker 1: I'm not overhyping this thing. It's about business, that sort
- 23:27Speaker 1: of stuff. But all the other teammates were asked, including
- 23:29Speaker 1: Lance Jackson, you know, how big this is and what
- 23:33Speaker 1: this week might be like for Hiro Kanu.
- 23:36Speaker 5: Yeah, he's friends with a bunch of them over there, but,
- 23:38Speaker 5: I mean, he kind of just says this week, I mean,
- 23:40Speaker 5: it's not about friendship.
- 23:41Speaker 2: He wants to beat them bad.
- 23:42Speaker 5: He didn't get to beat them last year, so I
- 23:44Speaker 5: feel like it's going to be really special for him
- 23:45Speaker 5: for us to be able to beat them this year.
- 23:47Speaker 1: And then one more from Lance Jackson this hour. We'll
- 23:48Speaker 1: hear more coming up next hour about the emphasis on
- 23:51Speaker 1: the film study and exactly... what the things that the
- 23:54Speaker 1: Buckeyes have shown to this point.
- 23:56Speaker 5: Really just, I mean, film studies really just, I mean,
- 23:59Speaker 5: watching the tight ends, watching the tackles, trying to pick
- 24:01Speaker 5: up keys, watching the quarterback, how far he drops back,
- 24:06Speaker 5: how the tackles kick set, really just focusing on the
- 24:09Speaker 5: small details.
- 24:10Speaker 6: Okay.
- 24:10Speaker 1: All right. We'll hear some more from him next hour.
- 24:12Speaker 1: A couple of things from Brian Schottenheimer before we break,
- 24:15Speaker 1: before Inconceivable. The Cowboys, like every other NFL team, has
- 24:19Speaker 1: a depth chart out there. And their depth chart on
- 24:23Speaker 1: the defensive side has a couple of either-ors. At one corner,
- 24:28Speaker 1: both Kobe Durant and Siobhan Ravel are mentioned.
- 24:33Speaker 2: And on the other, Malik Hooker and P.J.
- 24:35Speaker 4: Locke.
- 24:35Speaker 1: Whereas Caleb Downs, the rookie, is listed as a starter
- 24:39Speaker 1: as DB. Two corners, DB, the two safeties, and the
- 24:43Speaker 1: 4-2-5 alignment for the Cowboys. So Schottenheimer was asked, you know,
- 24:48Speaker 1: what's the designation or explanation for the either or on
- 24:52Speaker 1: that safety spot?
- 24:54Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 24:54Speaker 2: So, well, number one, I'm going to start a little
- 24:56Speaker 2: different way.
- 24:56Speaker 6: We really feel like we've got three or four safeties
- 24:58Speaker 6: that are starters in the National Football League. You know,
- 25:02Speaker 6: you know, I'll start that way. PJ and Malik, we
- 25:05Speaker 6: feel are starters. JT is a starter. Caleb Downs is
- 25:08Speaker 6: listed as a DB.
- 25:09Speaker 2: That's cool. you know, like it's what he is. He's
- 25:12Speaker 2: a DB.
- 25:12Speaker 6: So nickel and safety and all that stuff. But, um,
- 25:16Speaker 6: you know, both those guys have tremendous value.
- 25:17Speaker 2: I'm talking about Malik and PJ. They're both veterans.
- 25:20Speaker 6: They both, um, have, you know, system experience, you know, in,
- 25:24Speaker 6: in similar systems like this. And, um, it's the strength
- 25:28Speaker 6: of our, of our defense and reality. When you look
- 25:31Speaker 6: at the bodies we have back there, but the org
- 25:33Speaker 6: just means that a, by game plan, we'll do some
- 25:35Speaker 6: things different. It's no different. Kobe Durant or Von rebel. So,
- 25:39Speaker 6: It gives us flexibility, and it's not gamesmanship right now.
- 25:44Speaker 6: That's truly how we feel about our guys is that
- 25:46Speaker 6: we've got good players that can do different things at
- 25:48Speaker 6: different times for different reasons.
- 25:50Speaker 1: All right, he was also asked about that addition on
- 25:52Speaker 1: the offensive front of Broderick Jones about Terrence Steele and
- 25:55Speaker 1: how Steele has responded since Jones has been added.
- 25:58Speaker 2: Hasn't changed at all from his work ethic, his mindset.
- 26:01Speaker 6: He'll be the first scout to practice today, I'm sure,
- 26:05Speaker 6: going through his pre-practice routine. Again, Todd, all I can
- 26:10Speaker 6: say is he's done a really good job with the
- 26:12Speaker 6: reps that we've had. I was not surprised when I
- 26:17Speaker 6: called him and informed him of what we were doing
- 26:19Speaker 6: that he didn't hesitate. He understands the business. He's been
- 26:23Speaker 6: around a long time, and I think he's stacking really
- 26:26Speaker 6: good days. We expect him to go into this game
- 26:29Speaker 6: playing well, but at the same time, Broderick's just absolutely
- 26:34Speaker 6: diving into the playbook and all the different things.
- 26:35Speaker 2: That we're doing, which is good.
- 26:37Speaker 1: Okay.
- 26:37Speaker 2: All right.
- 26:38Speaker 1: We'll hear some more from Brian Schottenheimer in the 3
- 26:40Speaker 1: o'clock hour and the 4 o'clock hour. Up next, it's
- 26:43Speaker 1: inconceivable here on a Yacht Rock Wednesday on Sports Radio
- 26:46Speaker 1: AM 13 under the zone in the iHeartRadio app. Second
- 26:56Speaker 1: hour of the program here on Sports Radio AM 1300
- 26:58Speaker 1: The Zone. Craig Way alongside the producer, Jake Herman. Coming
- 27:03Speaker 1: up in a few minutes, we'll talk about the Ohio
- 27:05Speaker 1: State Buckeyes with the play-by-play voice.
- 27:07Speaker 2: Of the Buckeyes, Paul Keels. He'll join us in just
- 27:11Speaker 2: a few moments.
- 27:11Speaker 1: I want to get to a couple of the last
- 27:14Speaker 1: 24-hour stuff that's happened with college football. Yesterday, we talked
- 27:19Speaker 1: about the fact that the college football playoff committee has
- 27:22Speaker 1: opened up the exclusive negotiating window for ESPN because they
- 27:27Speaker 1: get a 30-day window. to hold down as exclusive rights
- 27:32Speaker 1: holder to the college football playoff if indeed they do
- 27:34Speaker 1: expand to 24 teams. And it's looking more and more
- 27:39Speaker 1: likely because the SEC and the Big Ten may well
- 27:44Speaker 1: be finally getting on the same page on this thing
- 27:47Speaker 1: because it has to do with revenue streams coming in if,
- 27:52Speaker 1: by virtue of having to have a 2014 playoff, that
- 27:54Speaker 1: means you have to eliminate conference championship games.
- 27:57Speaker 2: So if that happens.
- 27:59Speaker 1: How about that $ 100 million paycheck windfall the SEC gets,
- 28:04Speaker 1: you know, for having that conference championship? Well, that was
- 28:07Speaker 1: part of what, and there were also things about wanting
- 28:12Speaker 1: assurances from the Big Ten that its member schools would
- 28:16Speaker 1: play 10 power for opponents. In other words, play the
- 28:20Speaker 1: conference schedule and then play at least one more power
- 28:23Speaker 1: for opponent, which is in play today. now for the
- 28:26Speaker 1: sec with the nine game conference schedule and uh one
- 28:30Speaker 1: of their three non-conference opponents has to be a p4
- 28:33Speaker 1: a power four so that we talked about that yesterday
- 28:37Speaker 1: now today and this this actually came down pretty late
- 28:41Speaker 1: last night in fact i'm looking at max olson's dateline
- 28:45Speaker 1: piece it was at 10 30 last night and that
- 28:49Speaker 1: is uh you know we all remember what happened with
- 28:54Speaker 1: the uh Brendan Sworsby case with Texas Tech, and there
- 28:58Speaker 1: was lawsuits and threats of countersuits and all this other
- 29:01Speaker 1: kind of stuff, and then Texas Tech and Sworsby blinked
- 29:06Speaker 1: and backed down, and Sworsby went away. Well, apparently the
- 29:09Speaker 1: same thing has now happened with LSU. They are adding
- 29:16Speaker 1: two players to complete their 105-man roster. They went with
- 29:19Speaker 1: 103 last week, keeping Daquan Wright and Xavier Harris off
- 29:26Speaker 1: of the roster, and they apparently are going to keep
- 29:30Speaker 1: them off the roster. They're adding cornerback Aiden Anding and
- 29:35Speaker 1: Gabriel Relaford, two returning.
- 29:37Speaker 2: Players who are going to be in there.
- 29:39Speaker 1: So that means then that LSU and Lane Kiffin are
- 29:44Speaker 1: moving on from their efforts to add Wright and Harris,
- 29:48Speaker 1: an issue that escalated into that significant legal battle between
- 29:51Speaker 1: the SEC and the school, appears to be cooling off now.
- 29:55Speaker 1: Ryan Downton is an attorney who represents Wright and Harris.
- 29:59Speaker 1: He told ESPN the players are still considering some legal
- 30:02Speaker 1: options as well. So that apparently has brought about a
- 30:11Speaker 1: back down, a stand down for LSU, that they're not
- 30:14Speaker 1: going to add that. Meanwhile, after all of that happened,
- 30:22Speaker 1: the latest of the Louisiana politicians to weigh in on
- 30:25Speaker 1: all of this was United States Senator John Kennedy. He
- 30:29Speaker 1: blasted the SEC over that threat that we heard yesterday
- 30:33Speaker 1: that they wanted an amendment, the SEC, to the lawsuit
- 30:37Speaker 1: with the vote coming up on Thursday from school presidents
- 30:43Speaker 1: on whether to consider the possibility of expelling LSU.
- 30:48Speaker 2: From the conference.
- 30:49Speaker 1: Now, I've not seen, and Jake, you tell me if
- 30:51Speaker 1: I've just missed it, I've not seen an announcement that
- 30:54Speaker 1: said that vote has now been canceled. I've not seen that,
- 30:57Speaker 1: but one would imagine that's going to be the case
- 31:01Speaker 1: since LSU is backing off of their efforts to bring
- 31:04Speaker 1: former NFL training camp guys back to their active roster.
- 31:09Speaker 3: Yeah, all I see on this is Dan Wetzel's piece
- 31:11Speaker 3: from less than an hour ago talking about now the
- 31:14Speaker 3: chances of LSU getting booted from the league are next
- 31:17Speaker 3: to zero.
- 31:18Speaker 1: Right. So anyway, it's kind of funny hearing this coming
- 31:24Speaker 1: down as LSU and its legal representation within the state
- 31:31Speaker 1: of Louisiana has all had to back down. Well, politicians
- 31:34Speaker 1: don't like that. And Senator Kennedy said, and here's the quotes,
- 31:41Speaker 1: bone deep down to the marrow, stupid. I've got rocks
- 31:46Speaker 1: in my driveway that are smarter than that. They're not
- 31:49Speaker 1: going to throw LSU out of the SEC. Let me
- 31:51Speaker 1: tell you something. I and a lot of other people
- 31:53Speaker 1: in the United States Congress will be on them like
- 31:55Speaker 1: a hobo on a ham sandwich. LSU hasn't done anything wrong.
- 31:58Speaker 1: It's called a court of law. God made courts to
- 32:00Speaker 1: decide disputes. Whether you agree with what LSU did or disagree,
- 32:05Speaker 1: we did the right thing by.
- 32:06Speaker 2: Going to court. We didn't just do stuff. We went
- 32:08Speaker 2: to court.
- 32:09Speaker 1: We're going to abide by the court's decision, but they're
- 32:11Speaker 1: not going to start all this stuff.
- 32:12Speaker 2: Well, now they've backed down.
- 32:13Speaker 1: He also said that it was just Absolutely ridiculous that
- 32:22Speaker 1: they were going to do this. But the federal court
- 32:24Speaker 1: hearing for the lawsuit for LSU that was scheduled for
- 32:30Speaker 1: today has been postponed to a later date.
- 32:32Speaker 2: That has not yet been set. So it appears like.
- 32:36Speaker 1: The brinksmanship that happened, the Cuban missile crisis of college
- 32:41Speaker 1: football with who blinks, who stares down, who and who
- 32:44Speaker 1: steps down, it looks like in this case, LSU becomes
- 32:49Speaker 1: the Soviet Union. They back down off of that and
- 32:51Speaker 1: remove the missiles from Cuba. So that's one way that
- 32:54Speaker 1: you could say. So anyway, that's happened. Now, there's one
- 32:57Speaker 1: other thing that's happened. The NCAA has now established new protocols,
- 33:04Speaker 1: new guidance to, as they say, quote, to establish a
- 33:08Speaker 1: standard timing protocol that ensures consistency in the administration of
- 33:14Speaker 1: all college football games. So here's what this memorandum said
- 33:20Speaker 1: from the national coordinator of officials, Ron Snodgrass, and was
- 33:23Speaker 1: approved by the NCAA's secretary rules editor, Matt Young. Quote,
- 33:28Speaker 1: the official time for all college football games is the
- 33:31Speaker 1: time displayed on the in-stadium game clock. When a replay
- 33:36Speaker 1: review requires time to be restored or otherwise adjusted, the
- 33:40Speaker 1: replay official's decision will be based on the embedded game
- 33:44Speaker 1: clock contained within the program feed. If the broadcaster is
- 33:49Speaker 1: unable to provide an embedded game clock, the replay official
- 33:53Speaker 1: will use the game clock graphic displayed as part of
- 33:56Speaker 1: the broadcast feed. This timing protocol should be followed consistently
- 34:00Speaker 1: at all institutions and game sites.
- 34:04Speaker 3: So what about what happened in Ann Arbor? They didn't
- 34:08Speaker 3: follow that. That's why they did this now, to make
- 34:11Speaker 3: sure everybody follows it from now on.
- 34:13Speaker 4: So that's the change.
- 34:14Speaker 2: That's the change.
- 34:15Speaker 1: So that we don't have what happened the other night.
- 34:20Speaker 1: So that's the latest off of that. All right, before
- 34:25Speaker 1: we get to the break, a couple of things to
- 34:26Speaker 1: hear from Lance Jackson, the Longhorn sophomore defensive end. He
- 34:32Speaker 1: was asked how difficult is it to be able to
- 34:35Speaker 1: defend Julian saying how tough is he going to be?
- 34:40Speaker 5: Just how calm he is in the pocket. He's super accurate.
- 34:46Speaker 5: He has legs, but he doesn't have to use them
- 34:48Speaker 5: a lot. So I feel like one of the main
- 34:50Speaker 5: things is just us trying to make him use his legs,
- 34:53Speaker 5: make him get out of the pocket, make him feel flustered,
- 34:55Speaker 5: things like that. Just make him not feel comfortable in
- 34:58Speaker 5: the pocket like he looks in most games.
- 35:00Speaker 1: Okay all right so then he was asked what can
- 35:02Speaker 1: ohio spit ohio state expect to see from the long
- 35:05Speaker 1: run defense.
- 35:06Speaker 5: Like i said in the last interview just a lot
- 35:09Speaker 5: coming at him i mean we're gonna try to come
- 35:11Speaker 5: at him a lot just try to be big up
- 35:13Speaker 5: front uh i feel like all of us up front
- 35:16Speaker 5: have to do better this week um gotta play big
- 35:20Speaker 5: um yeah.
- 35:21Speaker 1: All right uh did they not show much on film
- 35:25Speaker 1: that Ohio state could pick up off of in that
- 35:27Speaker 1: whenever Texas state?
- 35:28Speaker 5: I thought we did, but we definitely got a lot
- 35:30Speaker 5: more in the package. I mean, um, yeah, I feel
- 35:34Speaker 5: like we should be more physical this week.
- 35:36Speaker 1: All right. Is there a, a, a theme in the
- 35:38Speaker 1: preparation coming from the defensive coordinator, Will Muschamp?
- 35:42Speaker 5: I mean, coach Muschamp is going to be the same
- 35:44Speaker 5: every week. It's not really, like I said earlier, it's
- 35:47Speaker 5: not just because Ohio state, he's going to kind of
- 35:48Speaker 5: give us a different message. I mean, it's the same
- 35:51Speaker 5: message every week. Um, I mean, go hard, thud, obviously,
- 35:55Speaker 5: and make plays. Be fast and physical.
- 35:58Speaker 1: Some have suggested maybe the Texas out for that R word, revenge.
- 36:03Speaker 1: But most of the players, including Jackson, aren't really going
- 36:06Speaker 1: down that road.
- 36:07Speaker 5: I mean, it's not really like get your leg back. But,
- 36:09Speaker 5: I mean, we definitely want to go in and win
- 36:11Speaker 5: the game. But we're not– I mean, this is a
- 36:13Speaker 5: whole new year. We're not really thinking about last year.
- 36:16Speaker 5: We have a bunch of new players. They have new
- 36:18Speaker 5: guys too. So– We're not really thinking get your leg back,
- 36:22Speaker 5: but we're trying to go in and win the game
- 36:23Speaker 5: and win it pretty good.
- 36:25Speaker 2: And one more from Lance Jackson.
- 36:26Speaker 1: He was asked about the growth of this sophomore class,
- 36:28Speaker 1: of which he is a part, from last year to
- 36:30Speaker 1: this year.
- 36:31Speaker 5: I mean, last year we got to get our feet
- 36:33Speaker 5: a little wet, but this year it's like we're in it. So,
- 36:35Speaker 5: I mean, we just got to go, be ready to go.
- 36:38Speaker 5: And I feel like all of us have kind of
- 36:40Speaker 5: taken a big step this year, and I feel like
- 36:44Speaker 5: everybody's going to see that.
- 36:45Speaker 1: All right, that's Lance Jackson, the Longhorn sophomore defensive end.
- 36:49Speaker 1: All right, coming up, we'll take a closer look at
- 36:52Speaker 1: the Ohio State Buckeyes.
- 36:54Speaker 2: We'll visit with my buddy, I started to say. That's
- 36:57Speaker 2: Paul Keels.
- 36:57Speaker 1: We'll do that coming up next here on Sports Radio
- 37:00Speaker 1: AM 13 Under the Zone on the iHeartRadio app.
- 37:03Speaker 4: I went back.
- 37:12Speaker 2: To Ohio.
- 37:16Speaker 1: But my city was gone No, you did not stumble
- 37:19Speaker 1: onto a rerun of the Rush Limbaugh show from years
- 37:24Speaker 1: ago since that was his theme song. No, it's back
- 37:28Speaker 1: to Ohio. The great Chrissy Hine and the Pretenders because
- 37:30Speaker 1: we're going up to... Ohio, Columbus, Ohio, to visit with
- 37:35Speaker 1: our good friend, the play-by-play voice of the Buckeyes, Paul Kills.
- 37:37Speaker 1: Did it have you thrown off a little bit there
- 37:39Speaker 1: when it was coming back there with some pretenders? Did
- 37:41Speaker 1: you think you'd stumbled on to, you might say, a
- 37:47Speaker 1: revamped edition of the Rush Limbaugh show or something?
- 37:50Speaker 7: I did think about it for a second, but I
- 37:52Speaker 7: trusted you had everything under control.
- 37:55Speaker 2: Okay.
- 37:56Speaker 1: How many decades, how many years overall now in the play-by-play?
- 38:00Speaker 2: This is season 29 for Ohio State. There you go.
- 38:03Speaker 2: There you go. And before that, I remember, weren't you
- 38:06Speaker 2: the voice of the Cincinnati Bearcats? Yes.
- 38:08Speaker 7: That was like seven years over a 10-year period because
- 38:11Speaker 7: I think we came across one another at a basketball
- 38:14Speaker 7: game at the Alamodome, I believe.
- 38:16Speaker 1: That's exactly right. Boy, now that would have been January 93, maybe.
- 38:21Speaker 2: Sounds about right.
- 38:22Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 38:23Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely. Okay. All right.
- 38:25Speaker 1: Well, it's great to see you. It's great to be.
- 38:27Speaker 1: And of course, I mentioned this earlier in the first
- 38:29Speaker 1: hour of the program that Paul and I did a
- 38:34Speaker 1: joint appearance on a network show the other night and
- 38:37Speaker 1: we went by and it was. It's kind of funny
- 38:39Speaker 1: because we wound up talking about a lot of other
- 38:41Speaker 1: things other than the football itself. But such is the
- 38:44Speaker 1: way of broadcasters. We're wanting to give that up. Let
- 38:48Speaker 1: me get your thoughts first of all. This was something
- 38:50Speaker 1: I was watching Ryan Day's press conference from yesterday. And
- 38:55Speaker 1: fascination is too strong a word. But there's the intrigue,
- 38:59Speaker 1: I think, on a lot of the media who are
- 39:02Speaker 1: there and certainly the media down here about– his coordinators,
- 39:07Speaker 1: having that NFL influence, having Arthur Smith on the offense.
- 39:10Speaker 1: We saw Matt Patricia last year. What's been your take
- 39:13Speaker 1: so far on that? Coach Day did say, look, in
- 39:17Speaker 1: the final analysis, this isn't the NFL or college players.
- 39:20Speaker 1: He did make a point of saying that, but have
- 39:22Speaker 1: you been able to tell a nuanced difference or maybe
- 39:26Speaker 1: even beyond a nuanced difference in how the offense and
- 39:29Speaker 1: defense systems are run with two former NFL not only
- 39:33Speaker 1: coordinators but at one time head coaches well.
- 39:36Speaker 7: Offense not really not yet based on just one game
- 39:39Speaker 7: and Craig the thing about what Ryan Day has done
- 39:41Speaker 7: and his time as a head coach he's really grown
- 39:44Speaker 7: with making coaching decisions very early on he had to
- 39:48Speaker 7: make some tough choices about in one case, demoting a
- 39:50Speaker 7: defensive coordinator, and then moving on from other people, something
- 39:54Speaker 7: that his predecessor wasn't really good about doing. But when
- 39:58Speaker 7: these high-profile spots have been open the last few years,
- 40:01Speaker 7: he's been very deliberate.
- 40:02Speaker 2: He's taken.
- 40:03Speaker 7: whatever he felt is the appropriate amount of time, not
- 40:06Speaker 7: rushed after the new hot target. And not so much
- 40:09Speaker 7: because they were NFL guys, but I think with both
- 40:12Speaker 7: Matt Patricia and Arthur Smith, they were guys that he
- 40:15Speaker 7: felt could come in and fit with what they wanted
- 40:18Speaker 7: to do. And people will talk about, well, really, Ryan
- 40:20Speaker 7: Day is the one calling the plays. It's the Ryan
- 40:22Speaker 7: Day offense. And Ryan Day will say, no, it's the
- 40:24Speaker 7: Ohio State offense. But he's got his fingerprints all over it.
- 40:27Speaker 7: With Matt Patricia, I think really what we saw last year,
- 40:31Speaker 7: It was a simplification because when Jim Knowles was here,
- 40:34Speaker 7: it was a little more complicated. And it took about
- 40:37Speaker 7: a year and a half of that really to take
- 40:38Speaker 7: hold of the players they had. So it's been interesting
- 40:42Speaker 7: to see. And I don't know, Craig, that it's had
- 40:43Speaker 7: a lot to do because of their NFL background. I
- 40:46Speaker 7: think it's just because of the way they fit with
- 40:48Speaker 7: what they've had to work with.
- 40:50Speaker 2: Interesting.
- 40:50Speaker 1: Well, they've obviously got a lot of very talented people
- 40:53Speaker 1: to work with. I know you've heard this, and I
- 40:57Speaker 1: think it was in the news conference as well. Certainly,
- 40:59Speaker 1: it's been talked about down here is the difference. And again,
- 41:05Speaker 1: only one game in the books for both of these
- 41:07Speaker 1: guys as the designated dyed-in-the-wool starter. But the difference for
- 41:13Speaker 1: Julian Say and the difference for Arch Manning, yeah, Arch
- 41:15Speaker 1: had to start a couple of games when Quinn Ewers
- 41:17Speaker 1: was banged up. But as the designated guy and the
- 41:24Speaker 1: tough lessons he had to learn along with his teammates
- 41:26Speaker 1: last year, And then somebody was saying, well, you know,
- 41:29Speaker 1: Julian made some really good progress over that. How do
- 41:32Speaker 1: you measure what you saw from him being thrust into
- 41:35Speaker 1: that situation last year to what you've seen so far,
- 41:38Speaker 1: even just with one game and the smaller sample size
- 41:41Speaker 1: to this point?
- 41:42Speaker 7: Well, I think, Craig, what we've seen with Julian through
- 41:45Speaker 7: last year and into now, they're willing to give him
- 41:47Speaker 7: a little more latitude. They're allowing him maybe to change
- 41:50Speaker 7: more stuff than what they did in the Texas game
- 41:53Speaker 7: last year. That was, you know, for both teams, really,
- 41:56Speaker 7: that was kind of, you know, first game, not knowing
- 41:58Speaker 7: what you had as far as an on-the-field capacity from people,
- 42:01Speaker 7: and just do what needed to be done to win
- 42:03Speaker 7: the game. I think I saw one of the writers said, hey,
- 42:06Speaker 7: if they can win the game 3-0, it's a win.
- 42:08Speaker 7: And that's kind of the way it was last year
- 42:10Speaker 7: at 14-7. You saw really where both defenses had a
- 42:13Speaker 7: big influence and all of that. What we saw last
- 42:15Speaker 7: Saturday was really kind of encapsulated what Julian Sane did
- 42:20Speaker 7: a lot of last year, but doing it as efficiently
- 42:22Speaker 7: as he did in game one was what really stood out.
- 42:25Speaker 7: You know, he's got the great wavelength with Jeremiah Smith
- 42:28Speaker 7: but you know getting Devin McCune involved Brandon Ennis is
- 42:31Speaker 7: kind of a known commodity there as well but just
- 42:34Speaker 7: to be as efficient as he was in game one
- 42:36Speaker 7: and really as he was all season last year was
- 42:38Speaker 7: kind of the big launching point as opposed to what
- 42:41Speaker 7: happened in that first game last year.
- 42:43Speaker 1: I was kind of intrigued by something uh first of
- 42:45Speaker 1: all something you said when we were uh doing the
- 42:48Speaker 1: podcast the other night uh when you considered to one
- 42:51Speaker 1: of the key matchups to be the Ohio State offensive
- 42:54Speaker 1: front against the Texas uh front four, front seven, whatever,
- 42:59Speaker 1: in terms of the offensive line versus the defensive line,
- 43:02Speaker 1: that sort of thing. And then in the press conference,
- 43:06Speaker 1: Coach Day was asked in specific. He was asked about
- 43:09Speaker 1: Philip Daniels at right tackle. He was asked about Ian
- 43:12Speaker 1: Moore at left tackle. And what did he think about...
- 43:14Speaker 1: certain performances of certain guys in certain spots as well
- 43:20Speaker 1: did would you say if there was a specific question
- 43:24Speaker 1: mark to take a look at going into the season
- 43:26Speaker 1: maybe it was going to be that and have they
- 43:28Speaker 1: kind of answered at least with the early sample size
- 43:31Speaker 1: to this point.
- 43:32Speaker 7: No question and there was some good question coming out
- 43:34Speaker 7: of the ball state game philip daniels didn't have his
- 43:36Speaker 7: best game he wasn't awful but you know he wasn't
- 43:39Speaker 7: at the level that you would expect and A lot
- 43:41Speaker 7: of that ties into the fact that Austin Sarabelle has
- 43:43Speaker 7: been moved from tackle to guard. And also what they've
- 43:46Speaker 7: tried to do, Craig, is get guys to play multiple positions.
- 43:49Speaker 7: If you remember in the championship year when they lost
- 43:52Speaker 7: Seth McLaughlin at center, that's when they had to move
- 43:54Speaker 7: Carson Hinsman from guard back to center. So because of
- 43:57Speaker 7: some of those things, they've tried to be flexible with.
- 43:59Speaker 1: All of that.
- 44:00Speaker 7: And really the bottom line is they knew that how
- 44:03Speaker 7: they played against Ball State was not how they're going
- 44:05Speaker 7: to have to play this weekend. So is it a concern?
- 44:08Speaker 2: Certainly. And it's more about because of the upgrade in
- 44:11Speaker 2: defense or what they're going to see. You brought up, uh,
- 44:13Speaker 2: the receiving core.
- 44:14Speaker 1: You said, uh, Devin McCune and, and, uh, we got
- 44:16Speaker 1: a chance to see him obviously when he was playing, uh,
- 44:19Speaker 1: for a UTSA, uh, but all roads lead back obviously
- 44:23Speaker 1: to Jeremiah Smith. And, and another fascinating thing I think
- 44:26Speaker 1: that came from the news conference was they were, they
- 44:29Speaker 1: were asking coach day, um, How do you, I'm paraphrasing,
- 44:34Speaker 1: it's almost like, how do you make him the weapon
- 44:37Speaker 1: everybody knows he can be without forcing the issue?
- 44:40Speaker 2: That type of thing.
- 44:41Speaker 1: And I thought Coach Day had some pretty good responses
- 44:45Speaker 1: on what he is, but what the other guys are
- 44:48Speaker 1: can make Smith all the more dangerous.
- 44:51Speaker 2: No question.
- 44:52Speaker 7: And some of that, Craig, comes from the fact that,
- 44:54Speaker 7: if you remember in the Cotton Bowl game two years ago,
- 44:56Speaker 7: Jeremiah had just one catch. Last year, he had six catches,
- 44:59Speaker 7: but didn't get in the end zone. everybody understands that
- 45:02Speaker 7: he's going to get a lot of attention. What is
- 45:05Speaker 7: going to happen? And last year, Carnell Tate, who scored
- 45:08Speaker 7: against the Longhorns, it really allowed Carnell Tate to turn
- 45:11Speaker 7: into the guy he became. That's where Ohio State went
- 45:14Speaker 7: and they added guys like Devin McCune, Brock Boyd, a freshman,
- 45:19Speaker 7: Kyle Parker, who transferred from LSU but hasn't played yet.
- 45:23Speaker 2: So, and, you know, where do the.
- 45:24Speaker 7: Tight ends even fall into this also? And we've seen
- 45:26Speaker 7: at times, too, how some of the running backs in
- 45:28Speaker 7: the past have been crucial in the passing game. So,
- 45:31Speaker 7: You know, what Jeremiah can do is really amazing. It's
- 45:35Speaker 7: especially amazing when you know that he's going to be
- 45:37Speaker 7: a guy that's featured. He makes such incredibly tough catches.
- 45:41Speaker 7: But he's also a guy that's really gone to school
- 45:43Speaker 7: on the blocking part of it and doing all of that.
- 45:45Speaker 7: There was a quote somebody had after Saturday. And, again,
- 45:49Speaker 7: this is paraphrasing, like you said. They said something to
- 45:52Speaker 7: Jeremiah about playing the second half last Saturday. He's like, no,
- 45:54Speaker 7: let the other guys get in there. You know, we
- 45:56Speaker 7: need to be ready. for what's coming next week.
- 45:59Speaker 1: It's a real grown-up assessment for him to have. And
- 46:03Speaker 1: by the way, when I was looking at all the
- 46:04Speaker 1: numbers there, I saw Brock Boyd and it put a
- 46:06Speaker 1: smile on my face. I did his state semifinal game
- 46:09Speaker 1: last year, and it was an unbelievable game between South
- 46:11Speaker 1: Lake Carroll and DeSoto. in that state semifinal. Um, one
- 46:15Speaker 1: more at the offense, the running backs. And, uh, you know, I,
- 46:19Speaker 1: I feel like we're all like supposed to say Bo Jackson,
- 46:23Speaker 1: not that Bo Jackson, you know, a long time ago,
- 46:26Speaker 1: you and I were a little bit younger when, when, uh,
- 46:29Speaker 1: Bo knows a football and was playing there, but how
- 46:31Speaker 1: about your assessment? Uh, not only him, but Jacoby Jackson,
- 46:34Speaker 1: Isaiah West legend Bay, your, your, your thoughts on what
- 46:37Speaker 1: you see from those guys.
- 46:39Speaker 7: Well, Bo Jackson certainly was a guy that last year,
- 46:42Speaker 7: especially late in the year, really kind of came into
- 46:44Speaker 7: his own. He's the guy that's shown the ability to
- 46:46Speaker 7: handle a big workload. We didn't see a lot of
- 46:48Speaker 7: Isaiah West last week, but he's a guy that's also
- 46:51Speaker 7: shown the kind of ability you would think. And Jacoby
- 46:53Speaker 7: Jackson was the guy at first we kind of thought
- 46:55Speaker 7: he was going to come in and be what C.J.
- 46:57Speaker 7: Donaldson was last year, short yardage guy. But he showed
- 47:00Speaker 7: some explosiveness last week. Now, the subject of Legend Bay
- 47:04Speaker 7: is a very interesting one because, and you probably are aware,
- 47:07Speaker 7: there was the big recruiting thing Brujaha that went on
- 47:10Speaker 7: on signing day, a difference with family members.
- 47:13Speaker 2: Yes.
- 47:13Speaker 1: I've heard a number of those stories over the years.
- 47:18Speaker 2: Yes.
- 47:18Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 47:18Speaker 2: It's not the first and it won't be the last.
- 47:21Speaker 7: But he showed, especially in the little touchdown catch that
- 47:24Speaker 7: he had on a short pass. I mean, the guy
- 47:27Speaker 7: has an incredible, the young man has an incredible ability
- 47:29Speaker 7: to make people miss. Now, the drama comes because they
- 47:33Speaker 7: designated him as the kick returner. And as I'm sure
- 47:35Speaker 7: you saw, the very first kick return when Brandon Innes
- 47:38Speaker 7: was telling him to stay out, stay in.
- 47:40Speaker 2: He ran out.
- 47:41Speaker 7: His second decision was not a great one. Now, fortunately,
- 47:44Speaker 7: the ball didn't get lost. I think we're all curious
- 47:47Speaker 7: to see if he's going to get another opportunity to
- 47:49Speaker 7: return kicks. But they know that this is a guy
- 47:52Speaker 7: that's got some special talent that somehow or another, not
- 47:55Speaker 7: only just this weekend, but during the course of the season,
- 47:57Speaker 7: they're going to have to figure out ways to get
- 47:59Speaker 7: him to utilize that talent.
- 48:00Speaker 1: Talking with Paul Keels, play-by-play voice of the Ohio State
- 48:03Speaker 1: Buckeyes for a few more minutes here on 1300 Zone.
- 48:05Speaker 1: Let me shift to the defense. What was your biggest takeaway?
- 48:09Speaker 1: I mean, obviously, you know, holding Ball State to three
- 48:13Speaker 1: is impressive on its own end. It is Ball State,
- 48:15Speaker 1: just like everybody says the same thing about Texas. Holding
- 48:17Speaker 1: Texas State to seven, it is Texas State as well.
- 48:20Speaker 1: But other than that, the totality of it, what were
- 48:24Speaker 1: the takeaways that you had from looking at the Buckeye defense?
- 48:27Speaker 7: Well, the first thing is they didn't even let Ball
- 48:29Speaker 7: State get in the red zone. And that kind of
- 48:30Speaker 7: goofed up one of our sponsor reads. We had to
- 48:32Speaker 7: figure out how to redo a red zone read.
- 48:35Speaker 1: Really?
- 48:36Speaker 2: Yeah, but we figured it out. I didn't realize it
- 48:40Speaker 2: until after the game.
- 48:41Speaker 7: But maybe the biggest thing that I took away from it, Craig,
- 48:45Speaker 7: is not only that they played a lot of players
- 48:47Speaker 7: on defense, but we saw glimpses of a number of
- 48:50Speaker 7: different people having influence on plays. I won't say making
- 48:54Speaker 7: big plays, but having influence on those plays. And you
- 48:57Speaker 7: know that The talent they lost last year with losing
- 49:00Speaker 7: Cade McDonald on the line, losing those two outstanding linebackers
- 49:03Speaker 7: in recent styles, losing Caleb Downs in the back end.
- 49:07Speaker 7: It's hard to think that they're going to have guys
- 49:09Speaker 7: that can play at that level, but they bring back
- 49:11Speaker 7: experience and they bring back some guys that have transferred
- 49:15Speaker 7: in with experience. So maybe the biggest thing I could
- 49:17Speaker 7: say is we saw a number of different peoples. affecting plays.
- 49:22Speaker 1: Uh, Bo Atkinson and Kenyatta Jackson, basically the anchors of
- 49:25Speaker 1: that defensive front.
- 49:27Speaker 7: They are. And I think you're going to see Edward Houston,
- 49:29Speaker 7: who as a freshman two years ago, really flashed last year.
- 49:33Speaker 7: It was a little nagging injury that kind of kept
- 49:35Speaker 7: him bothered. But you know, another guy to keep an
- 49:38Speaker 7: eye for on for Craig is Kari Wilder, a freshman
- 49:41Speaker 7: who they list as a defensive end. They line him
- 49:43Speaker 7: up at tackle sometimes, too. And this young guy is
- 49:46Speaker 7: a freshman. Even from as far up as we were
- 49:48Speaker 7: at the press box, you could tell this is a
- 49:50Speaker 7: guy that's a little different out there. But you'll see
- 49:52Speaker 7: new guys like John Walker and James Smith who came in.
- 49:55Speaker 7: Quay Rousseau from Alabama didn't play last Saturday but should
- 49:59Speaker 7: be good to go. But, yeah, Jackson and Atkinson on
- 50:02Speaker 7: the ends are kind of their ink.
- 50:03Speaker 1: But in the secondary, and again, rolling back to what
- 50:07Speaker 1: Coach Day said, he said, yeah, there's some guys that
- 50:09Speaker 1: went up. Jermaine Matthews is a veteran. He's back there.
- 50:12Speaker 1: And I'm here to tell you, and he's only a sophomore.
- 50:14Speaker 1: But again, another example, when I called state championship games,
- 50:17Speaker 1: he played it. Devin Sanchez was a homewrecker at the
- 50:20Speaker 1: high school level when he played for Galena Park North
- 50:22Speaker 1: Shore in the Houston area. I think it speaks to
- 50:26Speaker 1: guys like that. And then you have a grad transfer
- 50:29Speaker 1: like Terry Moore at the free safety and Jalen McLean
- 50:32Speaker 1: at the strong safety.
- 50:33Speaker 2: Guys that bring.
- 50:34Speaker 1: Some experience from other areas and have grown into their
- 50:38Speaker 1: positions as well.
- 50:40Speaker 2: They have.
- 50:40Speaker 7: And Jalen McClain's another returning guy who's just steady. He
- 50:43Speaker 7: hasn't done a lot that really makes you know. But
- 50:45Speaker 7: the guy to watch out for is Jay Timmons, a
- 50:47Speaker 7: true freshman from Pennsylvania. He started last week in the backfield,
- 50:52Speaker 7: and he's a guy that all summer we kept hearing,
- 50:54Speaker 7: this is a guy that's really showing an awful lot
- 50:56Speaker 7: out there. And, you know, freshman to start a defensive
- 50:59Speaker 7: back at Ohio State, that's not something you generally see
- 51:03Speaker 7: a lot, Craig.
- 51:04Speaker 2: Yeah, you're right.
- 51:05Speaker 1: And last year in that very similar position, the nickelback
- 51:09Speaker 1: position with the Buckeyes, that's what we saw from Grayson
- 51:12Speaker 1: Littleton last year in that starback as a freshman. And
- 51:15Speaker 1: maybe guys grow up a little quicker back there.
- 51:17Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 51:18Speaker 1: And the football IQ is big as well. It's been
- 51:22Speaker 1: 20 years since you've been down here. That's amazing. Have
- 51:26Speaker 1: you not set foot in Austin, Texas, USA since then?
- 51:29Speaker 6: No.
- 51:30Speaker 7: No.
- 51:33Speaker 2: Not that I haven't wanted to, but I haven't, no.
- 51:36Speaker 1: I mean, you and I, Carl's past, we saw each
- 51:38Speaker 1: other in Las Vegas before the basketball season opener a
- 51:41Speaker 1: couple of years ago.
- 51:41Speaker 2: There was that.
- 51:43Speaker 1: And then obviously we've seen each other since with the
- 51:47Speaker 1: bowl games. You know, I think when I think about this,
- 51:54Speaker 1: I know what last year was, and everybody talked about it,
- 51:56Speaker 1: and it was difficult. And then really and truly, the
- 51:59Speaker 1: game in 06, the last time you were here, that
- 52:01Speaker 1: was the widest point spread final margin of the game.
- 52:04Speaker 1: But even that, with Troy Smith launching the Heisman campaign,
- 52:08Speaker 1: even that I thought was a pretty entertaining ballgame. And
- 52:10Speaker 1: then you add to that the game in Columbus in 2005,
- 52:12Speaker 1: and then that Fiesta Bowl. I mean, we've seen some
- 52:16Speaker 1: really entertaining games.
- 52:17Speaker 7: Between these two. You know, I was thinking about the
- 52:20Speaker 7: Fiesta Bowl. back before all of those when Terrell Pryor
- 52:24Speaker 7: and Todd Beckman, two quarterbacks, both started the game on
- 52:28Speaker 7: the field at the same time, and Pryor lined up
- 52:30Speaker 7: as a receiver. The one in Columbus that Texas won,
- 52:34Speaker 7: if you remember, that's when Troy Smith had been suspended
- 52:37Speaker 7: for the opener, and they were kind of shuttling Smith
- 52:39Speaker 7: and Zwick back at quarterback, and that kind of retarded
- 52:42Speaker 7: the offense a little bit.
- 52:43Speaker 2: The one in Austin, and it came.
- 52:45Speaker 7: Up about James Laurinaitis, now the linebackers coach, had a
- 52:47Speaker 7: big interception in that game. But it is crazy to
- 52:50Speaker 7: think that it's been 20 years since that happened. Even crazier, Craig,
- 52:55Speaker 7: to think that it's only been since that first Fiesta
- 52:59Speaker 7: Bowl way back when that these two schools had not played.
- 53:01Speaker 7: I mean, even by accident in a bowl game. That's
- 53:04Speaker 7: the thing that really jumped out at me. Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 53:08Speaker 1: The final thing I want to ask you here, and
- 53:09Speaker 1: it kind of dovetails off of what we were just
- 53:11Speaker 1: talking about, and that's these big matchups. And in this
- 53:15Speaker 1: day and age now, NIL and Portal and what we
- 53:19Speaker 1: apparently are going to see with an expanded, doubled-in-size playoff
- 53:23Speaker 1: as well with the expulsion of conference championship games, certainly
- 53:27Speaker 1: my hope, and I think it's your hope as well,
- 53:29Speaker 1: that we continue to see these big games. Michigan has
- 53:32Speaker 1: a return game back in Austin next year. Right now,
- 53:35Speaker 1: there's a home-and-home with Notre Dame. We'll see in 2029
- 53:38Speaker 1: if it comes out that way. But I know that's,
- 53:40Speaker 1: I would imagine that's a hope of yours to see
- 53:44Speaker 1: matchups like this continued even in the ever-changing face of
- 53:48Speaker 1: this game.
- 53:49Speaker 7: Well, Greg, I think that That's good for the fans, too.
- 53:52Speaker 7: Ohio State next year will start a home-and-home with Alabama.
- 53:56Speaker 7: And both schools have indicated they're still on board with
- 53:59Speaker 7: letting it continue.
- 54:00Speaker 2: You hope so.
- 54:01Speaker 7: I mean, I don't know how you feel, but if
- 54:03Speaker 7: they do expand, not brokenhearted about the possibility of conference
- 54:06Speaker 7: championship games going away. But, you know, I think the
- 54:10Speaker 7: other part of it is, and unfortunately you guys lived it, okay,
- 54:13Speaker 7: you can lose a game like Ohio State-Texas. But then
- 54:17Speaker 7: if you lose another one someplace that you really shouldn't lose,
- 54:20Speaker 7: and Ohio State's had that. They, you know, they had
- 54:22Speaker 7: a bad loss at Purdue a number of years ago,
- 54:24Speaker 7: a loss at Iowa, two losses that kept them out
- 54:27Speaker 7: of the 14 playoff. You know, games like this, if
- 54:30Speaker 7: they're tight, close games, that damage is somewhat limited.
- 54:35Speaker 2: It's what you do the rest of the year.
- 54:37Speaker 7: And this is, for Ohio State, maybe one of the
- 54:39Speaker 7: most challenging schedules they've had in a number of years
- 54:42Speaker 7: outside of this game because they've got to go to
- 54:44Speaker 7: USC and They've got Illinois and Oregon coming to Columbus,
- 54:47Speaker 7: and then there's the one at the end of the
- 54:48Speaker 7: year that's always its own life. So you hope that
- 54:52Speaker 7: these continue, and you hope they continue on campus sites
- 54:56Speaker 7: and not the one-offs in Atlanta or wherever, because I
- 55:00Speaker 7: think those are good for the fans.
- 55:01Speaker 2: I agree with you.
- 55:04Speaker 1: If I rapid-fire asked you, other than the Buckeyes, who
- 55:08Speaker 1: is the best team in the Big Ten, the team
- 55:10Speaker 1: to beat, in your opinion?
- 55:12Speaker 7: I'd say Oregon. Despite what we saw last Saturday. And,
- 55:16Speaker 7: you know, Boise State has given Oregon trouble in two
- 55:18Speaker 7: of the last three years. But that would probably be
- 55:20Speaker 7: the team I'd say right now. Hey, it's great to
- 55:23Speaker 7: see you. And I can't wait to see you get
- 55:25Speaker 7: down in Austin. Your broadcast position will be slightly better
- 55:29Speaker 7: than Glendale.
- 55:29Speaker 2: I can promise you that. So we'll kind of work
- 55:33Speaker 2: with that.
- 55:34Speaker 7: You know, I was thinking last night after we did our,
- 55:36Speaker 7: or the other night if we did our thing, we
- 55:38Speaker 7: go months and maybe years where we don't speak to
- 55:40Speaker 7: one another.
- 55:40Speaker 2: No, the last month we've talked a lot. I know.
- 55:43Speaker 2: That's fun.
- 55:44Speaker 1: I'll look forward to seeing you and the crew. It'll
- 55:48Speaker 1: be great to see when you get down here, Paul.
- 55:49Speaker 2: Safe travels. I'll look forward to visiting with you on Saturday.
- 55:52Speaker 2: All right, Craig. My pleasure. Good to see you. You too.
- 55:54Speaker 2: All right.
- 55:55Speaker 1: That's Paul Keels, play-by-play voice of the Ohio State Buckeyes.
- 55:58Speaker 1: We have more coming up. We'll hear some more from
- 56:01Speaker 1: Brian Schottenheimer when we continue on 13 Under the Zone.
- 56:05Speaker 1: It's a little bit of a different swan from the
- 56:16Speaker 1: greatness of Walter Becker and Donald Fagan and Steely Dan.
- 56:19Speaker 2: This is the.
- 56:20Speaker 1: Mock Turtle song from the last album they did of
- 56:23Speaker 1: Steely Dan, The Old Regime, in 2013.
- 56:27Speaker 2: So.
- 56:31Speaker 1: It does become one of the more popular ones when
- 56:33Speaker 1: you read a lot of stuff about.
- 56:36Speaker 6: It.
- 56:36Speaker 1: Steely Dan fans really like this tune, the Mock Turtle song.
- 56:41Speaker 4: So Walter's singing here?
- 56:42Speaker 2: Yes. So, good stuff. All right.
- 56:46Speaker 1: Let's hear some more stuff from Brian Schottenheimer, the Cowboys
- 56:50Speaker 1: head coach. And we've talked about this. It's hot, very hot, clearly.
- 56:56Speaker 1: Temperatures right around at or above triple digits. not only
- 57:01Speaker 1: here in Austin, up in the Dallas forward Metroplex, and
- 57:03Speaker 1: that includes the Frisco, the star Frisco there. And he
- 57:08Speaker 1: was asked about the thought process between how much time
- 57:12Speaker 1: you split between outdoor on their practice fields, outdoor or
- 57:15Speaker 1: moving inside the Ford Center.
- 57:17Speaker 2: AI has changed everything. Sports science has changed everything.
- 57:20Speaker 6: You know, we've got a unique situation when you look at,
- 57:23Speaker 6: you know, these next, you know, five weeks, really, when
- 57:25Speaker 6: you factor in, you know, get home at 5 a.m. and,
- 57:29Speaker 6: you know, trip to Rio, which is like a short
- 57:30Speaker 6: week kind of for us. And, you know, the league
- 57:32Speaker 6: does a favor by getting, getting us go to Houston
- 57:34Speaker 6: and then come home on Thursday.
- 57:36Speaker 2: That was cool.
- 57:37Speaker 6: Um, and so, um, you know, we're just trying to
- 57:41Speaker 6: do what we can to avoid the heat. We don't
- 57:42Speaker 6: play in the heat, you know, so right now we're
- 57:44Speaker 6: just trying to do our best to get on the
- 57:47Speaker 6: grass for certain things and then be inside for certain things. Uh,
- 57:50Speaker 6: but we're really just, you know, the sports science team
- 57:52Speaker 6: is driving a lot of those decisions and, um, you know,
- 57:56Speaker 6: right now we just feel we can get better work done, uh, inside.
- 57:59Speaker 1: And inquiring minds want to know just who is the
- 58:02Speaker 1: sports science team.
- 58:03Speaker 6: I can't give you all their names, but, uh, you know,
- 58:06Speaker 6: from all departments, analytics from the training staff to, uh,
- 58:10Speaker 6: the strength coaches, um, you know, there's, there's a ton
- 58:13Speaker 6: of people. And so it's a, it's a big group and, um,
- 58:16Speaker 6: they honestly, they do a great job. They meet every week.
- 58:19Speaker 6: They talk about our players, what our players need, where
- 58:21Speaker 6: is this guy doing well, where is this guy deficient?
- 58:23Speaker 2: How can we do this?
- 58:24Speaker 6: You know, and I think the cool thing I'll speak
- 58:26Speaker 6: to the group is, you know, like the players have
- 58:29Speaker 6: really bought in, Todd, to the recovery aspect of this, massages,
- 58:32Speaker 6: and we spent a bunch of money on, you know,
- 58:35Speaker 6: recovery things and, you know, new, you know, like resources
- 58:42Speaker 6: with the saunas and stuff in the training room. So
- 58:46Speaker 6: that group that I'm not naming because there's a lot.
- 58:49Speaker 2: Of them, but they do a great job. But they're
- 58:52Speaker 2: all members of the sports science team.
- 58:54Speaker 1: He was also asked about the confidence level that he
- 58:57Speaker 1: has seen in Christian Parker as his defensive coordinator and
- 59:01Speaker 1: what Parker has seen from the defensive unit week by week.
- 59:03Speaker 2: Very confident.
- 59:05Speaker 6: You know, listening, sitting in on his meetings and the
- 59:08Speaker 6: things that he talks about, like I said there's a
- 59:10Speaker 6: very clear plan you know this is a unique opportunity
- 59:14Speaker 6: um because they don't know what we're going to do
- 59:16Speaker 6: on defense and you know we don't know what they're
- 59:19Speaker 6: going to do on offense you know they've got matt
- 59:21Speaker 6: nagy who's a terrific coach um greg roman you know
- 59:26Speaker 6: very very different you know One's the RPO guy and
- 59:29Speaker 6: sub personnel. So, you know, in terms of Christian, the
- 59:34Speaker 6: plan that he's put together with the staff, we're only
- 59:36Speaker 6: through normal down distance. We haven't done, you know, third
- 59:38Speaker 6: down a red zone yet. We've started third down a
- 59:40Speaker 6: little bit, but just like you would imagine is excellent.
- 59:45Speaker 6: And it's one, I think that will allow our players
- 59:47Speaker 6: to play fast, play free.
- 59:49Speaker 2: And that's what we want. We don't want to be
- 59:50Speaker 2: doing a lot of thinking. And a couple of thoughts
- 59:53Speaker 2: on a couple of former Longhorns.
- 59:55Speaker 1: First of all, DeMarvian Overshawn, who's had to come off
- 59:57Speaker 1: of two season-ending injuries. And Sean Ambers asked about the
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: work he's been able to put in over the past year.
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: Number one, I'm so happy for him.
- 1:00:06Speaker 6: I'm proud of him, the way he's worked and how
- 1:00:08Speaker 6: hard he's, you know, attacked learning this. playbook another system
- 1:00:12Speaker 6: you know we've i think we've talked about that a
- 1:00:14Speaker 6: lot so i won't dive into but these players that
- 1:00:16Speaker 6: have been here for a couple years all the different
- 1:00:18Speaker 6: systems they've been through you know from dq to zim
- 1:00:21Speaker 6: to floos to you know christian but like he's really
- 1:00:24Speaker 6: attacked this one and um he's practicing with a different
- 1:00:28Speaker 6: intent i think it's probably because he feels good and
- 1:00:31Speaker 6: uh really excited to see him run around and hit.
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: People all right and then one more uh pj lock
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: the former longhorn and who had really played well in
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: denver and now in a cowboy uniform Yeah, it's been great.
- 1:00:41Speaker 6: I mean, Clarence asked a question about him and Malik.
- 1:00:45Speaker 6: The other thing about PJ is PJ is another guy
- 1:00:48Speaker 6: that just on special teams, he does everything. So he's
- 1:00:51Speaker 6: playing safety, he's playing special teams. Great command back there,
- 1:00:55Speaker 6: understands the calls. I think that's where I'm excited to
- 1:00:59Speaker 6: see the communication this weekend. They're going to challenge us
- 1:01:02Speaker 6: with different personnel groupings, a lot of big personnel groupings.
- 1:01:05Speaker 6: And you know, just unbalanced lines and things that a
- 1:01:08Speaker 6: Matt Nagy, Greg Roman, you know, offense do. And we'll
- 1:01:12Speaker 6: have to communicate well. And PJ is excellent at that.
- 1:01:15Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: We'll hear some more from Shadi coming up next hour.
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: We'll be back to wrap up our number two here
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: on 1300 The Zone. Third and final hour of the
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: program here on a Yacht Rock Wednesday here on 1300
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: The Zone.
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: Craig Wade, joined by the producer, Jake Herman. Glad to
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: have you with us. We'll take you up to 5 o'clock.
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: Bucky and BK, come along at that point.
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: Hey, a reminder, tomorrow we'll have Longhorn Weekly with Steve Sarkeesian.
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: First of all, tomorrow, Sark does his weekly Zoom video
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: conference with the media. And we'll bring you his thoughts
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: and comments about this matchup with Ohio State and his
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: team and so on and so forth.
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: We'll do that tomorrow during these proceedings.
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: And then tomorrow night, you'll be able to hear Longhorn
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: Wheeler say, tomorrow it's 5.30 again tomorrow, isn't it, Jake?
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: Because of the Round Rock Express contest, I do believe.
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: I think we're back on for... 5.30 airtime. Once we
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: get beyond the completion of the minor league baseball season,
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: then it'll kind of settle in at 7 o'clock.
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: But I believe it's 5.30 right now.
- 1:02:32Speaker 3: Looks like we're going at 6 o'clock tomorrow night on
- 1:02:36Speaker 3: Longhorn Weekly.
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: Okay. 6 tomorrow.
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: And then I thought I saw, I think the following
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: is 5.30, and then it may roll.
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: Into a regular time after that. We'll see.
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: Yep.
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: But, okay. So, it'll be 6 o'clock tomorrow evening.
- 1:02:50Speaker 6: Yep.
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: And we have a special guest on the program tomorrow,
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: Matt Brown will be with us. So we'll visit with
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: him and talk about that matchup with Ohio State in
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: 05 in Columbus, the rematch in Austin in 06, the
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: last time the Buckeyes were here 20 years ago, and
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: then that Fiesta Bowl as well. So we'll do all that,
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: and you'll be able to hear it tomorrow evening on
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: the program. Friday, and we should point this out on Friday,
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: we'll be with you from 2 to 3. And then
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: there's a special football weekend preview show coming your way
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: from Covert.
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: And which location of Covert? 183.
- 1:03:37Speaker 4: Okay, yeah.
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: Up there, 183. Research, which is right near Duval, I think.
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: But anyway, it's right up there at 183. Next to Rudy's.
- 1:03:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: So the guys will be out there to do a
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: special two-hour football weekend preview from 3 to 5 tomorrow.
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: And that's the first of a series of football weekend
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: preview shows that we'll bring you from the Covert Family
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: of Dealerships.
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: So that'll be tomorrow afternoon.
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: We've got a one-hour edition of this program from 2
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: to 3, and then they'll have it from 3 to 5. Okay,
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: I want to go back to some of the sound.
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: We heard from Lance Jackson earlier, and we'll hear some more.
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: Coming up, we're going to hear more from Brian Schottenheimer,
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: the Cowboys head coach. Lance Jackson, of course, the sophomore
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: rush-in for Texas. I think there's a lot of folks,
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: myself included, who are expecting big things out of Lance
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: this season because there's probably going to be added attention
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: focused on defending the other side of the rush in
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: Colin Simmons, namely. And in fact, in watching Ryan Day's
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: news conference this week, he mentioned Colin Simmons a couple
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: of times. So obviously he has their attention. Not that
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: Lance Jackson in the totality of the Texas defense does not,
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: but he certainly has the attention of them. So in
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: Will Muschamp getting all of this together, Now Lance Jackson
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: ready to go again. And he was asked about this
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: matchup in week two versus week one, given the fact, remember,
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: he was a true freshman a year ago.
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: So a lot has changed.
- 1:05:22Speaker 5: I feel like it's definitely a little different because we
- 1:05:25Speaker 5: get to watch some week one film on them. So
- 1:05:26Speaker 5: we kind of get to get an idea of things
- 1:05:28Speaker 5: they're doing this year. Then we can also watch last year.
- 1:05:31Speaker 5: I feel like last year we kind of just going
- 1:05:33Speaker 5: into it, not really knowing anything. but now this year
- 1:05:38Speaker 5: we get to watch them in week one, so it
- 1:05:39Speaker 5: kind of gives us an idea.
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: Yeah, a chance to look back at their win over
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: Ball State and draw their conclusions of that. He was asked,
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: you know, what was his overall evaluation, his review, as
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: he saw it, of the Texas defense from the week
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: one win over Texas State?
- 1:05:58Speaker 5: I feel like we definitely played pretty good. Forced turnovers,
- 1:06:03Speaker 5: that was good. But I feel like up front, we just...
- 1:06:06Speaker 5: We got to play better. I feel like it wasn't
- 1:06:07Speaker 5: good enough for us. I feel like we didn't put
- 1:06:10Speaker 5: on display what is going to be the rest of
- 1:06:12Speaker 5: the year. I feel like there's definitely way more in
- 1:06:14Speaker 5: our tank that we're going to show this year.
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: Well, the Ohio State Buckeye offense has already shown quite
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: a bit early on, and that was.
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: Even against Ball State.
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: And what I mean by that is that they're not
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: unveiling all kinds of newfangled things, but they're just showing
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: what they're going to do. And after not having a huge.
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: First half run of the football. They really settled into
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: the second half. They do have a Bo Jackson. Not
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: that one. They have another one. He's a sophomore from Cleveland.
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: He had 83 yards rushing.
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: And a touchdown.
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: Had a big one, a 65-yard run in there. Isaiah
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: West carried the football. Jacoby Jackson had eight carries. He's
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: the Florida transfer. So they put their ground attack really
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: on display in the second half, and Lance Jackson was
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: asked to be evaluate what he saw from ohio state's running.
- 1:07:08Speaker 5: Backs um yeah their running backs are definitely good uh
- 1:07:11Speaker 5: explosive can move laterally um big and they have a
- 1:07:16Speaker 5: couple of running backs that can go now um tight
- 1:07:20Speaker 5: ends pretty good tackles fast athletic um so i mean
- 1:07:24Speaker 5: i mean i really i didn't get to watch full
- 1:07:26Speaker 5: film on ball state uh yet but yeah i mean
- 1:07:30Speaker 5: their o-line's athletic their running backs are big and athletic
- 1:07:33Speaker 5: too so i feel like their run games definitely could
- 1:07:35Speaker 5: be good Yeah.
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: And that's one of the things I think that folks
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: had a little bit of a question mark about it.
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: Going into the season, and.
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: That was how would Ohio State's rebuild offensive line do? Now, obviously,
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: we visited with Paul Keels, the play-by-play voice, to talk
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: about that, and he thinks that that's going to be
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: one of the key matchups is that offensive front for
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: the Buckeyes against you know, what, what Texas, uh, does
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: with its defensive front. So there's, there's plenty there involved
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: with that.
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: Okay. So, uh, in, in addition.
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: To getting ready for that Ohio state offense, uh, the
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: Texas defense certainly drew its share of attention on big plays.
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: You heard Lance Jackson a moment ago, talked about forcing
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: some turnovers, uh, you could look up the textbook definition
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: of forced turnover in the book and see what Raheem
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: Biles did in punching out the ball as he wound up,
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: punched it out, and then followed through to make the tackle.
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: By then, the ball was out, and Grayson Littleton scooped
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: it up and ran it in for a touchdown. Biles,
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: after the game, said he didn't realize he'd completely dislodged
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: the football, so he was following through on his tackle,
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: but boy, did he ever, and so Jackson was asking,
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: has he ever seen anyone punch the ball out like
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: Biles did?
- 1:09:06Speaker 5: Yeah, I definitely haven't. Yeah, it was just a big
- 1:09:09Speaker 5: old hole. I was actually hit on that play. I
- 1:09:11Speaker 5: stunned it to the A-gap, and then the hole just
- 1:09:13Speaker 5: opened up big, and He just punched it right out
- 1:09:16Speaker 5: and got a good lick on him.
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: It was pretty cool to see on film. Yeah, it
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: really was.
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: It was quite interesting to see that it brings to
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: mind what Derek Johnson.
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: Did when he was at Texas.
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: But he would do it a little bit differently is
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: the way that Johnson would do it. He would kind
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: of wind up and But he would do it after
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: he had the ball carrier secured and then would wind
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: up with what we used to call the Popeye punch.
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: He would bring it through to do that.
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: So it's interesting to see the way that Raheem Biles
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: goes about doing that. Okay, a couple other things from
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: Lance Jackson. The Houston Texans opened their season this Sunday.
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: against the Buffalo Bills. Now, Lance has a brother who
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: plays for the Bills, Landon Jackson, older brother, former All-Southeastern
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: Conference defensive end at Arkansas, was drafted in the third
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: round of the 2025 NFL draft a year ago. So, yeah,
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: his brother's going to play this Sunday in Houston. So,
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: as a result of that, Lance was asked, Uh, will
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: he get an opportunity to see his brother play? And
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: is there any brotherly advice that goes on between the two?
- 1:10:48Speaker 5: Yeah, for me, it's just, he's kind of just don't
- 1:10:52Speaker 5: try to like force to make plays too much. He's
- 1:10:55Speaker 5: just kind of play your game, play your technique, how
- 1:10:57Speaker 5: you know how to do and try not to force anything. Um,
- 1:11:01Speaker 5: But yeah, I think I'm definitely going to try to
- 1:11:03Speaker 5: get to Houston on Sunday, but I've got to play
- 1:11:05Speaker 5: Ohio State first.
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: There you go.
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: And they're going to have to obviously be on their
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: game to be able to beat this top-ranked team in
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: the country. That means playing very smart, playing with your
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: football IQ really dialed in. And going back to Raheem Biles,
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: that's one thing that Jackson says that dude has is
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: a high football IQ.
- 1:11:26Speaker 5: I feel like in that game, too, when he got
- 1:11:28Speaker 5: his pick, if you watch it back, He's kind of
- 1:11:31Speaker 5: just like, it looks like he's in slow motion. He
- 1:11:33Speaker 5: goes to the right, and then he sees the receiver
- 1:11:36Speaker 5: come in, and he just reads the screen. And it's like,
- 1:11:39Speaker 5: he almost makes the quarterback look kind of like funny, like,
- 1:11:42Speaker 5: where are you throwing the ball?
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: Because he just, he's able to read the offense so well.
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: Yeah, in addition to being physical, there's that art of
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: deception that Raheem Biles is able to do, be able
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: to get guys. turned and looking the wrong way or
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: making the wrong decision with a football or cutting the
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: wrong way.
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: If you're running back, those kinds of things.
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: That's another very important part of a defensive player is
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: to be able to redirect an offensive player, make him
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: go where he doesn't want to go or throw the
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: ball where he doesn't want to throw or throw it quicker.
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: Those kinds of things. Uh, the football IQ element. That's,
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: that's always very, very important.
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: Okay. Um, Coming up next, we're going to shift back
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: to the NFL.
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: And we'll hear from Brian Schottenheimer, the Cowboys head coach.
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: Of course, the Cowboys season opener Sunday night.
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: That's a 720 kickoff for the Cowboys as they take
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: on the New York football Giants. You'll be able to
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: hear that on 98.1 FM. You'll be able to hear
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: that Texans-Bills game here on The Zone on Sunday at noon. So,
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: Week one of the NFL season, which, of course, begins tonight.
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: We talked about it earlier with the Patriots-Seahawks Super Bowl
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: rematch tonight. Tomorrow, Rams 49ers in Melbourne, Australia. And then
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: everybody gets into the act on Sunday, followed by the
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: Monday night week one concluding game. All right, coming up next,
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: some more Cowboys conversation right here on Sports Radio AM
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: 13 Under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: That's just the way it is.
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: Back here on Yacht Rock Wednesday on 1300 The Zone.
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: Jake Herman said he didn't know this qualified as Yacht Rock.
- 1:13:28Speaker 3: I heard this song most recently covered by a jam
- 1:13:32Speaker 3: band I really like called Goose.
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: I've heard that. I've heard the cover. It's not bad.
- 1:13:36Speaker 4: They go for 10 minutes on this.
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. It's not bad.
- 1:13:39Speaker 3: But....
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: Of course, Bruce Hortons being the range, the original of
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: this is, I believe, 87 it came out.
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: You know where I heard this?
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: I heard it on iHeartRadios, the iHeartRadio app on their
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: Yacht Rock channel.
- 1:13:57Speaker 3: Yeah, we hear ads for it on this program all
- 1:14:00Speaker 3: the time, but there's no better advertisement for that than
- 1:14:02Speaker 3: listening to you on a Wednesday.
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: Well, I was riding around, thought, yeah, we're going to listen.
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: I was like, oh, yeah, okay. Bruce Hortons being the
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: range there. on a Yacht Rock Wednesday. Let's go back
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: to discussing pro football opening night tonight with Seahawks and Patriots,
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: Rams 49ers tomorrow night in Australia, and then you get
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: into the meat and potatoes on Sunday, including the Cowboys
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: opening against the New York Giants and opening with a
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: division opponent. In this day and age, you know, where
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: you've got, you know, the four divisions in each conference,
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: you're going to play the other three teams in your
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: division twice sometimes. And even before, I'll tell you this
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: because I'm old enough to remember, even before it was
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: four divisions, when it was three divisions for a long
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: time before expansion, even before it went to 17 games,
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: even before it went to 16 games, because when I
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: was a teenager, the NFL schedule until I was 18
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: The NFL schedule is 14 games. But even back then,
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: teams opened with divisional opponents from time to time.
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: Some did.
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: So it's not unusual to play division opponents to start.
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: Some might think there should be some added emphasis on that.
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: Schottenheimer was asked about that at his press conference. Is
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: there a little extra emphasized meaning of divisional games?
- 1:15:39Speaker 6: We plan one day at a time, one game at
- 1:15:41Speaker 6: a time. I think when you do that, we have
- 1:15:43Speaker 6: to plan ahead. Rio's not right down the street, so
- 1:15:47Speaker 6: we have to plan ahead for that. But for the players,
- 1:15:51Speaker 6: it's just Wednesday. I told them today, today is September 9, 2026,
- 1:15:54Speaker 6: and we have to win the day. And if you
- 1:15:56Speaker 6: start worrying about Sunday night and you don't focus on today,
- 1:16:00Speaker 6: then guess what? We won't have the preparation that we need.
- 1:16:03Speaker 6: And we talked a lot about preparation. We're more of a,
- 1:16:06Speaker 6: I say, 80-20 team. preparation team, which means we spend
- 1:16:11Speaker 6: 80% of our time talking about us, knowing our stuff
- 1:16:15Speaker 6: and what we're doing and why we're doing it, what
- 1:16:17Speaker 6: are the adjustments, and 20% worrying about the opponent. And
- 1:16:21Speaker 6: so I think that's something that I believe is important
- 1:16:23Speaker 6: because if you understand what you're doing, your self-inflicted wounds
- 1:16:26Speaker 6: should be very, very low. And self-inflicted wounds in this
- 1:16:29Speaker 6: way get you beat.
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: In taking on the Giants, one thing that Schottenheimer was
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: asked about is The Giants, 12 personnel. When you hear
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: 12 personnel, it's one back, two tight ends. And they'll
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: kind of line up big to go with that. And
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: he was asked, how about the challenge for his defense
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: when the Giants go to that 12 personnel?
- 1:16:49Speaker 6: Yeah, well, I mean, they've got very specific people that
- 1:16:52Speaker 6: they do very specific things with. You know, Ricard's different
- 1:16:55Speaker 6: than likely. You know, I mean, Malik Nabors is different
- 1:16:58Speaker 6: than Odell. So you have to know, oh, Scataboo's in
- 1:17:01Speaker 6: the game. Tyrone Tracy's in the game. So again, the
- 1:17:04Speaker 6: guys in the box have to do a great job.
- 1:17:05Speaker 6: They do a nice job of shuffling their pieces around.
- 1:17:07Speaker 6: But we have plans for different groupings and different people,
- 1:17:12Speaker 6: and they definitely challenge you with that.
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: And so game one will be tested. But again, I
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: think the.
- 1:17:19Speaker 6: Fact that we communicate very, very well and have a
- 1:17:22Speaker 6: good plan going in.
- 1:17:23Speaker 2: I think we'll be in good shape.
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: Before the season opener, quite often you're going to be
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: asked if you're an NFL coach about your practice squad
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: because it's still fresh. You've come out of training camp,
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: and now you get ready for the start of a season,
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: but there were some guys you cut and then brought
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: back and added to your practice squad, or there were
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: just somebody else you plucked off of another, you might say,
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: roster deletion and added to your practice squad. So he
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: was asked about Lakin Tomlinson's addition to his practice squad.
- 1:17:59Speaker 6: And just, you know, you watch the guys played a
- 1:18:01Speaker 6: ton of football, I think it's 112 starts or something
- 1:18:03Speaker 6: like that. I've been a fan of his, but, you know,
- 1:18:07Speaker 6: he understands the game of football for a guy his age.
- 1:18:10Speaker 6: He can still bend. He's got tremendous length. But you
- 1:18:13Speaker 6: see the pop in his lower body. And, you know, again,
- 1:18:16Speaker 6: this is something that, you know, when you're trying to
- 1:18:18Speaker 6: add people to the practice squad, certainly the veterans, you'd
- 1:18:21Speaker 6: like to find guys that, when things happen, you can play,
- 1:18:24Speaker 6: you know, and you can insert them. And so he'll
- 1:18:26Speaker 6: be in a ramp up period. He won't, you know,
- 1:18:28Speaker 6: be doing much of practice today. We got to get
- 1:18:30Speaker 6: them ready to go and we'll do that.
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: Well, at this time of year, when it's really, really hot,
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: the Texas heat always is taken into account, whether it's
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: games or just practice. And Sean, Ivers asked how hot
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: does it really have to get in order for him
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: to decide, you know, it's not worth practicing outside. Let's
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: get inside there at the Ford center. Let's get inside
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: and work in there instead of work outside.
- 1:19:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:19:03Speaker 6: I mean, there's not, you know, there's, there's, it's, it's
- 1:19:06Speaker 6: more of the humidity and, What are we doing from sweating?
- 1:19:10Speaker 6: And we do all the sweat testing. We've got these
- 1:19:11Speaker 6: cool urinals. I don't know how much they cost, but
- 1:19:13Speaker 6: they must have been expensive. You pee and it tells
- 1:19:16Speaker 6: you whatever your urination levels are.
- 1:19:21Speaker 2: It's crazy.
- 1:19:22Speaker 6: But it's all those things that go into it. That's
- 1:19:24Speaker 6: what you do as a head coach. You're like, hey,
- 1:19:26Speaker 6: how are the urination levels?
- 1:19:27Speaker 2: Are they cool? Let's go inside. Oh, they're low.
- 1:19:30Speaker 6: Okay, let's go outside. I'm making light of it. But no,
- 1:19:33Speaker 6: I mean, look, if we can get outside tomorrow, we will.
- 1:19:36Speaker 6: If we can't, we won't.
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: But this is a long season.
- 1:19:38Speaker 6: And, you know, again, the one thing I will say
- 1:19:41Speaker 6: is the turf inside, I think, feels better, feels different.
- 1:19:45Speaker 6: I know we moved some turf around and got some
- 1:19:47Speaker 6: stuff in there that the guys actually feel better on it.
- 1:19:51Speaker 2: And then one more from Brian Schottenheimer.
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: He was asked, and this is, you love when questions
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: like this get asked.
- 1:20:03Speaker 2: Of course, with.
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: The Cowboys taking Caleb Downs, he was asked if there
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: was a concern when the Giants were on the clock
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: that they were going to get.
- 1:20:14Speaker 2: Downs instead of him getting Downs for his team.
- 1:20:18Speaker 6: I was very nervous because I'd heard John, Coach Harbaugh,
- 1:20:22Speaker 6: talk about.
- 1:20:22Speaker 2: That he was a generational safety. I think it was
- 1:20:24Speaker 2: the terms he used.
- 1:20:25Speaker 6: If I'm wrong, I apologize, but I knew how much
- 1:20:28Speaker 6: he thought of him. They got a terrific player, but
- 1:20:32Speaker 6: we were surprised. They got a great player from Ohio
- 1:20:36Speaker 6: State as well and Arvel Reese and but I was
- 1:20:40Speaker 6: surprised but it wasn't just them it was a number
- 1:20:43Speaker 6: of the teams in front of.
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: Us okay all right that makes sense all right what
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: we're going to do is we're going to take a
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: break when we come back Jake Herman and I he
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: doesn't know this I'm just now unveiling this although we've
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: probably talked about it in the past a little bit
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: we're going to make our NFL picks all right so
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: we're gonna you're gonna you're gonna you're gonna make your
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: choices of the four division winners in each conference, the
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: three wildcard teams, which teams will advance from the wildcard
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: round into the divisional round and then to the conference
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: championship games and then to the Super Bowl, and you're going.
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: To pick a Super Bowl champion.
- 1:21:19Speaker 4: On the fly.
- 1:21:20Speaker 2: I love it. I thought about.
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: Giving us a lot of brain power on this, a
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: lot of prep time, and I thought, nope, nope, I'm
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: going to let this thing just kind of organically come
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: to us who do we think is going to win
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: each division and make the playoffs and win the thing.
- 1:21:34Speaker 4: Hopefully i do better than major league baseball.
- 1:21:37Speaker 3: That didn't go too well for you did it's been
- 1:21:39Speaker 3: a mixed bag we'll revisit it later okay okay i've
- 1:21:42Speaker 3: had a couple teams that started really slow that have
- 1:21:45Speaker 3: come around and made me look at least not horrible
- 1:21:48Speaker 3: okay kansas city royals as a wild card that one's
- 1:21:50Speaker 3: tough to shake off.
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: Yeah yeah that one didn't go well okay um all
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: right so we'll do that coming up uh some nfl
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: picks just around the corner we'll continue here on this
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: Yacht Rock Wednesday on Sports Radio AM 13 under the
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: zone on the iHeartRadio app.
- 1:22:06Speaker 4: Here on the.
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: Yacht Rock Wednesday, hearing from the godfather of Yacht Rock,
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: Michael McDonald.
- 1:22:13Speaker 2: This is actually off the QB Brothers album.
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: Carry Me Away was this one. And I believe it's
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: off of Living on the Fault Line, which really kind
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: of Living on the Fault Line is viewed as being
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: the ground zero album for yacht rock, which really kind
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: of launched the genre.
- 1:22:38Speaker 2: Because if you've seen.
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: The yacht rock documentary, they talk about the Doobie Brothers
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: playing outdoors in a festival in California. And it was
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: this newer sound. And everybody was just, you know, flipped
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: out over it. And this was right in the wheelhouse.
- 1:22:53Speaker 4: A little bit like Dylan going electric. Same type of reaction.
- 1:22:57Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: Well, when Dylan went electric, he had a lot of
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: negative reaction to that, too. There was a lot of
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: people thought he had sold out, especially when they heard
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: Nashville Skyline that album. But with the Doobies, it was
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: just kind of looked at as being kind of a transition.
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: There were those who thought, yeah, the Doobies had kind
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: of sold.
- 1:23:13Speaker 2: Out as well. But it was just a different. Genre,
- 1:23:16Speaker 2: different time. That's why I always.
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: Said I didn't mind Doobie Brothers pre-Michael McDonald, which was
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: a harder edge, you know, China Grove and some of
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: those tunes. Blackwater, a different feel, you know. But then
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: when McDonald joined and you had taken it to the
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: streets and, you know, Long Train Runnin' when you had
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: a lot of, well, not Long Train Runnin', a couple
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: other ones that had McDonald's voice on it. You kind
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: of understood the metamorphosis they'd undergone going from caterpillar to butterfly.
- 1:23:51Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't know. Some might look at
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: it that way.
- 1:23:55Speaker 4: Yeah, fun to hear it over the years.
- 1:23:56Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: Night number one in the National Football League. I always
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: commend the NFL with the way the scheduling works, even
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: with 17 games.
- 1:24:10Speaker 2: And you know me, Jake.
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: I'm a more is more guy normally. there have been
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: two things I've kind of pulled back on a little bit.
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: I'm not crazy about the idea of a 2014 college
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: football playoff, but it looks like no matter how I
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: feel about it or anybody else, it looks like it's
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: going to happen.
- 1:24:28Speaker 2: And so I'm okay.
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: I thought maybe one more expansion of 16 might be
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: the ideal number. Same thing with the NCAA basketball tournament
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: at 64. I was in the league with a lot
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: of folks in line with a lot of folks who
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: thought that 64 was the right number. 68 was okay
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: because I didn't mind– the play-in games, the first four
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: in Dayton, especially when I could see firsthand how that
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: city just embraces those two nights of basketball and reducing
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: the field from 68 to 64. I saw it first
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: doing the national broadcast there at the Dayton Arena for
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: Westwood One back in 2016. And then the last two
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: years with Texas playing in it, I got a chance
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: to see it. And with Texas on the short end
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: of it, there in 2025 and then in 2026 with
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: the win over NC State that propelled them to go
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: on and then beat BYU in Portland and then knock
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: out Gonzaga in Portland to reach the round of the
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: Sweet 16.
- 1:25:27Speaker 2: I saw the usefulness of it.
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: And that's why I try not to get too over
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: the top on the expansion to 76.
- 1:25:38Speaker 2: I know it.
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: Sounds like an awful lot, but There are three, I
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: think it's 351 Division I basketball programs in the nation,
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: college basketball.
- 1:25:53Speaker 2: So you're still far less than half, especially when you
- 1:25:56Speaker 2: look at it.
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: And I think in college football, we've got 24 and
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: we've got what now? 135, I think, Division I FBS
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: football programs. So anyway, just some thoughts on that. Okay,
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: but The NFL, when I started to say they do
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: a good job with what they've done, and right now
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: you've got 14 teams that make the playoffs, seven in
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: the NFC, seven in the AFC, that make it. You
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: have the four division winners and three wildcard teams that
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: advance to the playoffs. Okay, so that's 14 out of 32.
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: So that's what, 48%, I guess?
- 1:26:33Speaker 4: Yep, that's what college coaches say.
- 1:26:34Speaker 3: You can't judge me on whether or not I missed
- 1:26:36Speaker 3: the playoff because in the NFL it's 48%, you know?
- 1:26:39Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:26:43Speaker 4: They got a point when you look at the SEC
- 1:26:44Speaker 4: this year.
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: I was listening to Colin Cowherd earlier today here on
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: 13 Under the Zone, and he was talking about how
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: on average, on average, of the 14 teams that make
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: the NFL playoffs every year, six are teams that did
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: not make it the year before. Yep, there's always new ones.
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: So there's an average of six new ones every year.
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: And by new, meaning just they weren't in it the
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: year before. They might have been in it two years
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: prior to that, but they weren't in the postseason a
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: year ago. And so he had some newbies getting in
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: as well as the.
- 1:27:25Speaker 2: Standard, the standbys.
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: So what we've done on this program in the past,
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: Cameron and I did in the past, is to pick
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: who we think was going to win each division, who
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: would be the three wild cards, who would advance out
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: of the wild card round to the division round, and
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: then who would reach the conference championships, and then.
- 1:27:43Speaker 2: Who would reach the Super Bowl, and who would win
- 1:27:45Speaker 2: the Super Bowl.
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: So we've done that with varying degrees of success.
- 1:27:51Speaker 2: So Jake and I are going to try to do
- 1:27:52Speaker 2: the same thing here. Okay.
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: The first thing I'm going to ask you, we'll talk
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: about division winners, and we'll kind of go... I guess
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: it would be geographically we would do this. So let
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: me start with the AFC East. Get your thoughts on
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: the East and who wins the East in your mind.
- 1:28:11Speaker 4: I'll keep it simple.
- 1:28:12Speaker 3: The Bills, I like what they did in the offseason
- 1:28:15Speaker 3: in terms of giving Josh Allen a big weapon in
- 1:28:18Speaker 3: DJ Moore. Am I sold on the head coaching change
- 1:28:22Speaker 3: being the answer to some defensive problems in the playoffs? No,
- 1:28:26Speaker 3: but I think their schedule shakes out a lot more
- 1:28:28Speaker 3: favorably than New England's does. And the Bills had a
- 1:28:31Speaker 3: far less tumultuous offseason than the Patriots. So I'll go Buffalo.
- 1:28:35Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:28:36Speaker 2: I am as well. I like it. and I'm with you.
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: I'm a little bit, I got a little bit of
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: trepidation with the coaching change and everything there, but they still,
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: I think, have the most talent in that division.
- 1:28:50Speaker 4: And I know.
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: New England was in the Super Bowl last year. Buffalo's
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: had this thing in not being able to get over
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: the hump.
- 1:28:58Speaker 2: We all know that.
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: I think they have, right now, on a down-by-down basis,
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: the best quarterback in the AFC.
- 1:29:06Speaker 3: You said the AFC? I think it's the NFL. He
- 1:29:09Speaker 3: just hasn't come through and won the big one.
- 1:29:11Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. Yeah, I mean, there's a decent chance.
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: And it's not fair to put it all on Josh Allen. But,
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: by the same token, I don't know that it's, you know,
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: he can be entirely blameless.
- 1:29:28Speaker 2: He's made some mistakes as well. So anyway, I'm going
- 1:29:31Speaker 2: to go with Buffalo. Okay. AFC North.
- 1:29:33Speaker 4: I'll go Baltimore.
- 1:29:34Speaker 3: One of the easiest schedules in the league. I think
- 1:29:37Speaker 3: they have a sneaky coach upgrade happening here with Jesse
- 1:29:40Speaker 3: Minter coming over to replace John Harbaugh, who I hadn't
- 1:29:42Speaker 3: been all that impressed with for the back half of
- 1:29:45Speaker 3: his time in Baltimore.
- 1:29:46Speaker 4: I'll go Ravens. Okay.
- 1:29:48Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: And that's another team, by the way, whose quarterback is
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: going to have to put the team on his shoulders
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: a little bit because Lamar Jackson's a two-time MVP and
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: he's never even been in the Super Bowl.
- 1:29:56Speaker 3: He loves this new offense they've installed in the offseason.
- 1:29:59Speaker 3: I've heard a lot of positive buzz from Baltimore.
- 1:30:01Speaker 2: I agree. I, you know, I really debated on this.
- 1:30:06Speaker 2: I'm going with Cincinnati.
- 1:30:07Speaker 4: Yep, okay.
- 1:30:08Speaker 2: I like them.
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: I think there is one of the best quarterbacks in
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: the NFL and Joe Burrow, he's healthy and he's got
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: receiving targets and, you know, I like, and they've had
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: the continuity with the coaching staff with Zach Taylor and
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: his group.
- 1:30:22Speaker 2: So I like the Bengals.
- 1:30:24Speaker 3: My thing there, they've really invested in the defense, right?
- 1:30:27Speaker 3: Everything they threw this offseason was into the defense. It
- 1:30:30Speaker 3: was most of their free agent budget. Dexter Lawrence comes in.
- 1:30:33Speaker 3: Mafe comes in. That's why I like them.
- 1:30:35Speaker 4: Did they fix the O-line?
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: Eh, you know, we'll see how that works with that. Okay,
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: AFC South. AFC South, I'm going with Houston. Jacksonville, they
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: only have six home games this year.
- 1:30:46Speaker 4: You know that, Craig? Because they've got a couple that
- 1:30:48Speaker 4: they lose to London.
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: Yeah, the international thing.
- 1:30:51Speaker 4: That kind of tips the scales. Plus, I just think C.J.
- 1:30:54Speaker 3: Stroud's bouncing back this year, and if he can be
- 1:30:56Speaker 3: just a little bit better, I like the Texans' chances
- 1:30:59Speaker 3: to repeat and start better than they did last year.
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: You know, I think this is the easiest division to
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: pick out of all of them. I'm with you. I'm
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: going with the Texans as well. Stroud's got a lot
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: to prove, and with everything that happened with the contract
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: deal and all that, and also the way that he
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: ended the season.
- 1:31:16Speaker 2: What was it?
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: Seven turnovers in the last two games for him, so
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: he's got some things there, but They clearly have the
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: best defense in the AFC, if not the entire NFL.
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: So I'm with you on that. Okay, AFC West. This
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: ought to be interesting.
- 1:31:30Speaker 3: Toughest division on the board. I'm going to go with
- 1:31:35Speaker 3: the Los Angeles Chargers. And that's because Mike McDaniel comes
- 1:31:38Speaker 3: in and I think he really unlocks a new level
- 1:31:41Speaker 3: of Justin Herbert. I think their offensive line injuries played
- 1:31:44Speaker 3: a much bigger role in the woes last season in
- 1:31:47Speaker 3: that playoff loss of the Patriots than we realized. But, boy,
- 1:31:50Speaker 3: this is a tough one to pick, Craig. You could
- 1:31:52Speaker 3: go three directions on this.
- 1:31:54Speaker 2: Yeah, and the direction I'm going is Denver.
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:31:58Speaker 2: Obviously, with Bo Nix, you have the weapon there.
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: I also like what the Broncos have up front in
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: their other offensive weapons as well. And I think they
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: have one of the best coaches in the NFL in
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: Sean Payton.
- 1:32:11Speaker 3: You look at O-lines and D-lines and blocking and tackling.
- 1:32:14Speaker 3: The Broncos do that better than anyone else. They've got,
- 1:32:17Speaker 3: I think, the highest floor offensively. of the three contenders
- 1:32:20Speaker 3: in that division. So certainly a good pick to win it.
- 1:32:22Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:32:22Speaker 3: Wild cards, wild cards. I'm going to give one to
- 1:32:25Speaker 3: the Broncos for some of the reasons you just mentioned.
- 1:32:28Speaker 3: I'll give one to the Patriots.
- 1:32:29Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:32:30Speaker 3: And that last wild card spot, I think the Kansas
- 1:32:33Speaker 3: city chiefs sneak their way in as a seven seat.
- 1:32:36Speaker 2: Yep.
- 1:32:36Speaker 3: Yep.
- 1:32:37Speaker 2: Uh, I can see.
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: I think that, uh, for me, uh, the wild cards, uh,
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: I also think new England's in, and I also think
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: Baltimore will get in. You have them winning a division, uh,
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: And I think Kansas City is the third one off
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: of that.
- 1:32:51Speaker 2: So it's very, very similar.
- 1:32:52Speaker 4: Wow, so you don't have the Chargers as a playoff team.
- 1:32:56Speaker 2: I don't.
- 1:32:56Speaker 4: And I don't have the Bengals. There's our differences.
- 1:32:58Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: All right, we'll take a break. When we come back,
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: we'll shift to the NFC, and then we'll wrap up
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: today's edition of the program on 13 Under the Zone. Okay,
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: before we get done, we've got to get to the
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: NFC since we just had our— predictions for the coming
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: season in the AFC. So, Jake Herman, let's jump to
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: the NFC. Start with your thoughts on the NFC East.
- 1:33:26Speaker 2: Who wins?
- 1:33:27Speaker 4: Well, certainly not the Washington Commanders.
- 1:33:29Speaker 3: I think we can probably put them down in a tier.
- 1:33:33Speaker 3: I see this division with a clear top two, and
- 1:33:37Speaker 3: that top two includes the Philadelphia Eagles, who are trying
- 1:33:40Speaker 3: to keep their grip atop the division, which teams haven't
- 1:33:44Speaker 3: dominated the division really at all in recent stretches of
- 1:33:47Speaker 3: years like the eagles have done in the nfc east
- 1:33:50Speaker 3: i think the cowboys take it from them this year
- 1:33:52Speaker 3: i really do like the cowboys offseason and if the
- 1:33:54Speaker 3: defense it's kind of how i feel about the texans
- 1:33:57Speaker 3: offense if the cowboys can just get about a b
- 1:33:59Speaker 3: minus from their defense a c even that is going
- 1:34:03Speaker 3: to take them over the hump because this offense even
- 1:34:06Speaker 3: with the injury to smith i think is going to
- 1:34:08Speaker 3: be humming along uh i uh.
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: I think the cowboys will be vastly improved and be
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: a playoff team but i still see the eagles winning
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: the nfc east will be my call there All right.
- 1:34:18Speaker 2: NFC North.
- 1:34:19Speaker 3: This is the hardest division to predict in the NFC
- 1:34:22Speaker 3: for me. And I'm going to go with the Chicago Bears,
- 1:34:26Speaker 3: who I know everyone's going to say the Lions have
- 1:34:29Speaker 3: an easier schedule, but I'm just in on Ben Johnson
- 1:34:32Speaker 3: and Caleb Williams. And I think the offensive breakthrough they
- 1:34:34Speaker 3: had last year was real.
- 1:34:36Speaker 4: Yes, they're going to regress.
- 1:34:37Speaker 3: They can't go through a season again with six fourth
- 1:34:41Speaker 3: quarter come from behind wins.
- 1:34:42Speaker 4: I think they make it a little easier on themselves
- 1:34:44Speaker 4: this year.
- 1:34:44Speaker 2: I'm going to go with the Lions.
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: They're healthy. And I think that's as good as anything.
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: They've got Laporta back. They've got, you know, with all
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: of the guys they have. I like the linesman. But
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: I do also see the Bears as a playoff team.
- 1:34:56Speaker 2: NFC South?
- 1:34:57Speaker 3: NFC South is the division of mediocrity once again. Every
- 1:35:02Speaker 3: year we look at this division and think, ho-hum. You know,
- 1:35:06Speaker 3: what's going on out there? I am only sure about
- 1:35:09Speaker 3: one thing, and that is Atlanta is going to struggle.
- 1:35:11Speaker 3: I don't like what they've got coming into the year,
- 1:35:13Speaker 3: particularly at the quarterback spot. i'm gonna go ahead and
- 1:35:18Speaker 3: back carolina to repeat i know it was a crazy
- 1:35:20Speaker 3: tiebreaker that gave them the victory last year i still
- 1:35:23Speaker 3: believe in bryce young i've got too many concerns about
- 1:35:25Speaker 3: the defenses of both the bucks and the saints yeah.
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: I'm gonna go with carolina as well uh you're right
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: i think defensive concerns i think new orleans will be
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: improved not enough to be a division champ all right
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: nfc west.
- 1:35:38Speaker 3: Out west i'm gonna go ahead and take the los
- 1:35:42Speaker 3: angeles rams who have what A lot of folks are
- 1:35:45Speaker 3: calling a dream team coming into the season with Miles
- 1:35:48Speaker 3: Garrett added back into the fold with the last ride
- 1:35:51Speaker 3: for Matthew Stafford with Puka Nakua looking unlikely to face
- 1:35:55Speaker 3: discipline and suspension.
- 1:35:56Speaker 4: I like the Rams, Craig.
- 1:35:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I do as well.
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: And, you know, even though I root for that team,
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: I find it hard sometimes to pick them because they've
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: let me down many times in the past. But I
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: do think they have the talent. I think their coaching
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: is as good as there is in the league. I'll
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: go with the Rams. Okay, your wild cards?
- 1:36:14Speaker 3: The wildcard teams I have are the Detroit Lions coming
- 1:36:17Speaker 3: out of the NFC North. And I think the Seattle
- 1:36:20Speaker 3: Seahawks find their way back into the playoffs as well
- 1:36:22Speaker 3: to try and defend that Super Bowl title.
- 1:36:25Speaker 2: And one more?
- 1:36:26Speaker 4: Oh, there's three, right.
- 1:36:28Speaker 3: My last wildcard in the NFC, I will go with
- 1:36:33Speaker 3: the Eagles. I just think there's enough wins for them
- 1:36:35Speaker 3: there in the NFC East.
- 1:36:36Speaker 2: Okay. All right.
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: See, our stuff's kind of interchangeable. I have the Cowboys
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: as a wildcard. You have them as a division winner.
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: I have Chicago as a wild card. You have them
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: as a division winner. And we both have Seattle in there.
- 1:36:46Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: So we just have just enough time here. AFC champion.
- 1:36:50Speaker 4: I'll go ahead and take the Baltimore Ravens. Jesse Minner.
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:36:55Speaker 2: I'm going with the Buffalo Bills.
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:36:57Speaker 2: They're going to get over the hump. NFC champion.
- 1:37:00Speaker 7: Rams.
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: Rams.
- 1:37:01Speaker 3: I hate to put the jinx on your team, Craig.
- 1:37:03Speaker 3: I know you don't like picking them, but I just
- 1:37:04Speaker 3: love Miles Garrett.
- 1:37:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I do too.
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: And your Super Bowl champion is?
- 1:37:10Speaker 3: The Baltimore Ravens, Craig, break through and win with a
- 1:37:13Speaker 3: first-year head coach in 2026.
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:37:16Speaker 4: I think it's going to be Buffalo. I think the
- 1:37:19Speaker 4: Bills finally get it done. So we both go AFC.
- 1:37:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I think so.
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: I'm going to go with the Buffalo Bills to win
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: this in what could be a heck of a Super
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: Bowl against the Rams.
- 1:37:30Speaker 4: We both took first-year head coaches, Craig.
- 1:37:32Speaker 2: How about that?
- 1:37:33Speaker 4: And nobody took the Rams.
- 1:37:34Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:37:34Speaker 4: I thought you were for sure going to back them.
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: But look what happened last year with Mike McDonald, you know,
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: with Seattle. I mean, coaches who are young in the
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: tooth can win. Yeah.
- 1:37:43Speaker 2: If they've got the teams to do it.
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: Okay, I will seal these hermetically. What was in the
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: old Tonight Show, Johnny Carson, in a ported Funkin' Wagnalls
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: or something like that.
- 1:37:54Speaker 4: What?
- 1:37:55Speaker 2: Hermetically sealed.
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:37:56Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: That's going to wrap up for the program today. Tomorrow,
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: we'll get you a little closer to kickoff. One of
