- 0:07Speaker 1: Tuesday is most certainly hitting differently today, and we are
- 0:13Speaker 1: very glad of it.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Good afternoon, everybody.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Welcome to the program here on Sports Radio AM 1300,
- 0:17Speaker 1: The Zone, and where you can always listen to us
- 0:20Speaker 1: for free on the iHeartRadio app. My name is Craig Way.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Glad to have you with us. Glad to have my
- 0:26Speaker 1: Zone brethren around me, and glad to be out amongst you.
- 0:30Speaker 1: We're here at Boulevard Social and here on North Lamar.
- 0:34Speaker 1: It's 6215 North Lamar, to be exact. It's just the
- 0:38Speaker 1: way that I kind of remembered it is that it's
- 0:41Speaker 1: just right where I used to go and get my
- 0:44Speaker 1: driver's license done, you know. There's some people going up
- 0:47Speaker 1: north to Lamar, and there's a lot of people who
- 0:49Speaker 1: know that they might identify with that. Joined here by
- 0:54Speaker 1: Mike Harge, and you hear Harge along with the world's
- 0:57Speaker 1: strongest man, Mark Henry, weekday mornings. Monday through Friday, 7 a.m.
- 1:02Speaker 1: to 9 a.m., 6 a.m.
- 1:03Speaker 3: To 9 a.m.
- 1:04Speaker 1: In their new world on the morning kickoff. I'm glad
- 1:07Speaker 1: you made it out here today. I've been looking forward
- 1:10Speaker 1: to this. This is one of my locations, as you mentioned.
- 1:13Speaker 1: I brought that up today about the driver's license.
- 1:16Speaker 4: Absolutely.
- 1:17Speaker 5: I also said that, you know, if you go too far,
- 1:20Speaker 5: if you're headed north, you go past the Whataburger, and
- 1:23Speaker 5: it's a quick turn into that location. If you get
- 1:26Speaker 5: to the Shell, you went too far.
- 1:27Speaker 3: Turn around. Come and hang out with us.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Very, very easy to find. And you kind of live
- 1:34Speaker 1: up north anyway, and so does Cameron Parker, who kind
- 1:36Speaker 1: of lives So it's pretty easy to find this then.
- 1:40Speaker 3: Not too bad, about 20 minutes away from where I reside. And,
- 1:43Speaker 3: you know, I went to school at ACC down the
- 1:46Speaker 3: street here for my first couple years of college. So
- 1:48Speaker 3: I'm pretty familiar with this Whataburger and P. Terry's and
- 1:51Speaker 3: the coffee shops.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Well, this gives you a new opportunity instead of just
- 1:56Speaker 1: walking into one of those places to get a fast
- 1:59Speaker 1: food burger or something like that. I saw they've got
- 2:02Speaker 1: a $ 15 burger special here that looks incredible. And then
- 2:05Speaker 1: on top of that, this is where you can see games.
- 2:08Speaker 1: There are games getting ready to tip off right now
- 2:10Speaker 1: as we speak on day number one of the NBA season.
- 2:14Speaker 3: How excited are you guys about that? Well, it all
- 2:17Speaker 3: just came upon us really, really quick. I didn't realize.
- 2:19Speaker 5: I knew that the NBA season was starting. I just
- 2:22Speaker 5: didn't know it was going to start at 2 p.m.
- 2:24Speaker 3: Central Time.
- 2:24Speaker 1: How about that?
- 2:25Speaker 5: A day game for basketball.
- 2:28Speaker 3: We're used to day games for baseball.
- 2:30Speaker 5: We're not used to day games for basketball unless it's
- 2:32Speaker 5: like a holiday, and I guess opening day is a holiday.
- 2:36Speaker 3: It should be.
- 2:37Speaker 1: We've talked about this before. Maybe Super Bowl Monday and
- 2:41Speaker 1: some other places ought to be like federal holidays.
- 2:46Speaker 3: For sure. Why not?
- 2:47Speaker 1: And the start of the NBA season could certainly be construed.
- 2:52Speaker 1: As a federal holiday.
- 2:53Speaker 3: I think Monday, Craig, I was talking with the staff here,
- 2:55Speaker 3: Cole and Trey and Jeff at Boulevard Social. Monday is
- 2:58Speaker 3: the sports equinox.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Yes.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Of course, the World Series will be underway. NHL, NBA underway.
- 3:05Speaker 3: Monday night football. I mean, we're already at the most
- 3:08Speaker 3: perfect time of the sports calendar year.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Yeah, I've often heard that October is the best month
- 3:14Speaker 1: of the year. Maybe March is second best, but October,
- 3:18Speaker 1: because of the fact that you've got all of the
- 3:20Speaker 1: sports happening all at once, you have football, pro, college,
- 3:24Speaker 1: high school. You have basketball, NBA starting tonight, and we're
- 3:28Speaker 1: just around the corner from the start of the college
- 3:30Speaker 1: basketball season. Baseball, as you mentioned, the American League Championship
- 3:34Speaker 1: Series wrapped up last night, and now we're looking at
- 3:36Speaker 1: the World Series. We have the two teams for that, and.
- 3:41Speaker 3: Even the NHL for those of you.
- 3:43Speaker 1: So they have the screen tiers where you can keep
- 3:45Speaker 1: up with these things, and this is a great place
- 3:47Speaker 1: to have outdoor seating, patio seating there, and the weather's
- 3:51Speaker 1: getting to the point where it's really kind of nice,
- 3:53Speaker 1: but it's also nice to be indoors as well.
- 3:56Speaker 3: It's perfect outside. We got here, we're setting up, and
- 3:59Speaker 3: went out onto the patio here, and it's a perfect
- 4:02Speaker 3: day to spend your Tuesday outside. Great happy hour menu
- 4:06Speaker 3: from 2 to 5 p.m., I believe. And then also,
- 4:09Speaker 3: you know, Celtics Pistons tipping off here coming up in
- 4:13Speaker 3: a few minutes. So, you know, come on out and
- 4:15Speaker 3: enjoy Spurs Thunder tonight, getting the NBA season.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Aren't you fired up Thunder fans that you are, you know?
- 4:22Speaker 1: And you're a Spurs fan, right?
- 4:23Speaker 2: Right, right.
- 4:24Speaker 5: This is going to be the battles. This is that
- 4:26Speaker 5: battle that we were talking about last year. And I
- 4:29Speaker 5: give the Spurs a hard time strictly because of the
- 4:31Speaker 5: fact that they thought winning against OKC– gave them the championship.
- 4:37Speaker 5: They forgot that they had to play the Knicks and
- 4:39Speaker 5: finish it off.
- 4:40Speaker 3: So Wimby was so emotional. I'll never forget that.
- 4:44Speaker 5: And now he's got to come back and try to
- 4:46Speaker 5: right the wrongs of last year.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Well, I'm going to get this out of the way
- 4:50Speaker 1: right now. I'll start right now. Raise your hand, and
- 4:54Speaker 1: I'll relay it over the radio because you can't see it.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Raise your hand if you think the New York Knicks
- 4:59Speaker 1: are repeating as world champions.
- 5:01Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what I thought.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Nobody's raising their hands off that, and I'm in agreement
- 5:04Speaker 1: with that, by the way.
- 5:06Speaker 3: Unless you're a Knicks fan.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Well, and it's less about, I think, the issues of
- 5:14Speaker 1: the Knicks repeating and more about the strength of the
- 5:16Speaker 1: Eastern Conference, not just because LeBron is with Philadelphia now,
- 5:18Speaker 1: although that's a big part of it as well.
- 5:21Speaker 3: It's not just because of that.
- 5:22Speaker 1: It's just because the East overall, I think, is definitely
- 5:26Speaker 1: more powerful than the West.
- 5:27Speaker 3: That and too, Craig, I mean, we're hearing rumors about
- 5:30Speaker 3: Carl Anthony Towns and, you know, he wants that contract extension.
- 5:33Speaker 3: The Knicks are reluctant to pay that. So the season's
- 5:36Speaker 3: already starting and you already got, I mean, long 82
- 5:39Speaker 3: games ahead. If this extension isn't done by the deadline,
- 5:42Speaker 3: then the entire season, you're going to have people ask
- 5:45Speaker 3: Anthony Towns, the coaching staff, all right, you know, is
- 5:47Speaker 3: he on the trading block? What are you going to do?
- 5:49Speaker 3: And you don't want that heading into a season, which
- 5:51Speaker 3: should be about coming off a championship, right? It should
- 5:54Speaker 3: be about repeating. Instead, it's about contracts and that's never
- 5:58Speaker 3: a good sign and you know I don't think anyone
- 6:01Speaker 3: expected New York to win it last season they had
- 6:02Speaker 3: a fantastic run but look at the Western Conference the
- 6:06Speaker 3: Spurs are only getting better the Thunder are only getting
- 6:08Speaker 3: better you mentioned the 76ers Giannis now with the Miami
- 6:12Speaker 3: Heat you look at Cleveland returning all of their guys
- 6:14Speaker 3: it's going to be a really entertaining NBA season in
- 6:16Speaker 3: the Eastern Conference and the Boston Celtics who are getting
- 6:19Speaker 3: ready to tip off Detroit Pistons Pistons were that team
- 6:22Speaker 3: two years ago everyone thought was up next and in
- 6:24Speaker 3: Boston they Moving away from Jalen Brown, the former Finals MVP,
- 6:29Speaker 3: you bring in playoff P, perhaps Paul George. What will
- 6:31Speaker 3: the Celtics look like this season? So a lot of questions,
- 6:34Speaker 3: but specifically in New York, surrounding Anthony Towns and that
- 6:37Speaker 3: contract extension.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Yeah, and then like you mentioned, the Pistons, who I
- 6:42Speaker 1: think are definitely... Going to be a team that can
- 6:45Speaker 1: be dangerous there. Kate Cunningham looks ready to roll again
- 6:48Speaker 1: in the rest of that Detroit ball club.
- 6:50Speaker 5: Yeah, Detroit is one, you know, they're trying to make
- 6:52Speaker 5: it back to where bad boy Pistons days where they're
- 6:54Speaker 5: getting more physical.
- 6:56Speaker 3: They finally got the contract worked out with Dern.
- 6:59Speaker 5: And now you get to see what Kate Cunningham, who
- 7:01Speaker 5: was an MVP candidate last year, if he's going to
- 7:04Speaker 5: be able to play at that level again. One of
- 7:06Speaker 5: the teams that we have not mentioned is the Dallas
- 7:09Speaker 5: Mavericks bringing back Kyrie Irving.
- 7:11Speaker 3: Kyrie Irving coming back.
- 7:13Speaker 5: Obviously, we saw what Cooper Flagg was able to do
- 7:16Speaker 5: in his rookie campaign. But the thing about it is
- 7:20Speaker 5: basketball is here, and you know as well as I do,
- 7:22Speaker 5: if everybody's not healthy... It's going to be a tough
- 7:25Speaker 5: and long season for some teams.
- 7:27Speaker 3: Absolutely. No doubt about it.
- 7:28Speaker 1: And then, you know, the other intrigue with the Mavericks
- 7:31Speaker 1: is how does Dusty May do?
- 7:32Speaker 3: Yes.
- 7:33Speaker 1: And yesterday, and we were all over on the UT
- 7:36Speaker 1: campus for the. for the press conference with Longhorn's head coach,
- 7:39Speaker 1: Steve Sarkeesian.
- 7:41Speaker 3: And when we were.
- 7:42Speaker 1: There, Sean Miller, the Texas men's basketball coach, preceded him
- 7:47Speaker 1: with a media availability. And they asked him about different
- 7:51Speaker 1: guys and all this sort of stuff. And he talked
- 7:53Speaker 1: about how close he was. with Dusty May because he
- 7:56Speaker 1: was asked about the Spurs and Rockets playing here this
- 8:00Speaker 1: weekend and this coming weekend. Would they be around for it?
- 8:04Speaker 1: He said he didn't think they would be around. They
- 8:06Speaker 1: obviously would not be around for the game. They'd probably
- 8:08Speaker 1: head on up to New York. It's an early game
- 8:11Speaker 1: on Sunday. It's 11 a.m. I had some people ask me, hey,
- 8:14Speaker 1: are you guys broadcasting the men's exhibition game? on Sunday
- 8:17Speaker 1: from Madison Square Garden. And I said, no, we're not.
- 8:21Speaker 1: And he said, why is that? And I said, can't
- 8:22Speaker 1: get there from here that quickly. There's a night football
- 8:25Speaker 1: game Saturday night at DKR Texas Memorial Stadium against the
- 8:30Speaker 1: seventh-ranked Ole Miss Rebels. What we are going to do
- 8:33Speaker 1: on Sunday is broadcast a women's game against the defending
- 8:35Speaker 1: national champions, the UCLA Bruins, who will be up the
- 8:38Speaker 1: road from us in Cedar Park at the HEB Center.
- 8:42Speaker 1: The women had an exhibition last night against UConn. Up
- 8:45Speaker 1: in Connecticut, it was even at the half, and then
- 8:47Speaker 1: UConn itched up in the second half and pulled away.
- 8:49Speaker 1: But that's the nice thing about this changing face of
- 8:54Speaker 1: women's and men's college basketball is that you can have
- 8:58Speaker 1: these now high-profile exhibition games before the start of the season.
- 9:03Speaker 3: It used to be you couldn't do that.
- 9:05Speaker 1: And then after Hurricane Harvey, they brought in a relief thing,
- 9:09Speaker 1: and Texas played A & M over at Rice in it.
- 9:11Speaker 1: And then you start being able to add a little
- 9:13Speaker 1: bit of that. Most of the exhibitions have historically and
- 9:16Speaker 1: customarily been against Division II and Division III schools. And
- 9:20Speaker 1: the women will have one next week against Eastern New Mexico.
- 9:23Speaker 1: But they have that one on Sunday against UCLA. So
- 9:28Speaker 1: that's a step forward, I think, for both men's and
- 9:30Speaker 1: women's college basketball.
- 9:31Speaker 3: And I think, Craig, it allows Coach Miller and Coach
- 9:34Speaker 3: Schaefer to get an idea of where their team stacks
- 9:37Speaker 3: up against the Ucons, the UCLAs, the St. Johns, but
- 9:39Speaker 3: then also you know, with how tough the SEC is,
- 9:42Speaker 3: your coaches kind of get away from scheduling these really
- 9:45Speaker 3: non-conference games. At the same time, you want to know
- 9:48Speaker 3: how your team stacks up. But if you lose those
- 9:50Speaker 3: games hard, then it really hurts your tournament resume, right?
- 9:52Speaker 3: So it makes more sense to go out and play
- 9:54Speaker 3: a little bit easier at non-conference because the SEC schedule,
- 9:57Speaker 3: both men's and women's, is so difficult. So we're seeing
- 10:00Speaker 3: it now more so in the exhibition. I mean, it's
- 10:02Speaker 3: a UCLA team for the women's side. That's a completely
- 10:05Speaker 3: different team. I mean, it's funny. You go from a
- 10:07Speaker 3: Final Four team and they're ranked 11th. Texas, number six,
- 10:10Speaker 3: tells you how good UConn and South Carolina are going
- 10:12Speaker 3: to be on the men's side too, right? I have
- 10:14Speaker 3: a chance to go up against Rick Pitino and St.
- 10:17Speaker 2: John's.
- 10:17Speaker 3: A lot of history there. Sean Miller talking about He
- 10:19Speaker 3: was recruited by Rick Pitino. And Billy Donovan, of course,
- 10:23Speaker 3: hosted him on his official visit. So it gives a chance,
- 10:26Speaker 3: I think, for these coaches to see how can we
- 10:28Speaker 3: stack up. But at least for, I think, both programs, Harge,
- 10:31Speaker 3: men's and women's at UT, so many new faces, right?
- 10:34Speaker 3: I think Vic Schaefer possibly going to start two freshmen,
- 10:36Speaker 3: maybe three freshmen, the starting five for Texas. You're only
- 10:39Speaker 3: bringing back the men's side. Only Matas is coming back.
- 10:42Speaker 3: So the team we're going to see in these exhibition games,
- 10:45Speaker 3: the team we're going to see through November, totally different
- 10:48Speaker 3: from the teams we're going to see come March.
- 10:50Speaker 5: One of the biggest things, too, that Coach spoke about
- 10:52Speaker 5: is the NIL opportunities. These games are being played to
- 10:57Speaker 5: help these young men and women get NIL opportunities.
- 11:01Speaker 3: That's why the women are going back to Vegas. That's right.
- 11:03Speaker 5: And those are the types of things that I continue
- 11:05Speaker 5: to look at when you look at these early matchups,
- 11:08Speaker 5: these early exhibitions, the way that things go down.
- 11:11Speaker 3: That's a great challenge.
- 11:12Speaker 5: And to your point, Cam, You talk about what you
- 11:15Speaker 5: saw with this team and them being able to go
- 11:19Speaker 5: and find out what these young players are going to
- 11:22Speaker 5: be like.
- 11:22Speaker 3: Same thing for the men.
- 11:24Speaker 5: They got two scrimmages that they've had, closed-door scrimmages, one
- 11:27Speaker 5: against Arizona State, the other one against SMU just the
- 11:31Speaker 5: other night. Then you talk about going up and playing
- 11:33Speaker 5: a Rick Pitino team.
- 11:35Speaker 3: You know, he was asked, how tough is it by
- 11:36Speaker 3: Roger Wallace?
- 11:37Speaker 5: He was asked how tough is it going to be
- 11:39Speaker 5: for you to be sitting on the bench and not
- 11:41Speaker 5: going all the way out because this is a game
- 11:43Speaker 5: to you. Whenever you step on the court, it's competitive.
- 11:46Speaker 5: So it'll be interesting to see how all of these
- 11:48Speaker 5: young players perform.
- 11:51Speaker 2: Okay.
- 11:52Speaker 1: We put it off long enough. We'll talk about long,
- 11:54Speaker 1: long football coming up. We'll do that. And we're at
- 11:58Speaker 1: Boulevard Social. We hope you'll come on out. They've got
- 12:01Speaker 1: the special on the burgers and chicken sandwich all the
- 12:04Speaker 1: way up until 7 o'clock tonight. But they have a
- 12:07Speaker 1: great opportunity for you to take advantage not only of
- 12:09Speaker 1: those things and the drink specials and all of that.
- 12:13Speaker 1: If I understand the procedure correctly, we're going to give
- 12:16Speaker 1: away some tickets today.
- 12:17Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 12:18Speaker 5: You are correct about that. We got two Texas football
- 12:22Speaker 5: tickets and we have what?
- 12:24Speaker 3: John Party? Yeah. John Party tickets?
- 12:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:27Speaker 3: Dave is like, come on, guys, say John Party. Yeah, yeah.
- 12:30Speaker 3: We will.
- 12:31Speaker 2: We will.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Jake Herman, our producer back in the studio, bummed back
- 12:35Speaker 1: with a John Party tune. I'll have him do the
- 12:38Speaker 1: same when we get ready to come out of this
- 12:40Speaker 1: coming up. But we want you to come on out
- 12:41Speaker 1: here to Boulevard Social. Enjoy the great food and drink specials.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Get your name in the registration box because that's how
- 12:49Speaker 1: you can win tickets either to the Texas Ole Miss
- 12:52Speaker 1: game or to John Pardee, the concert as well, as
- 12:57Speaker 1: part of the musical event coming up next month. So
- 13:00Speaker 1: we'll do that. And my eyes are not deceiving me.
- 13:04Speaker 1: The world's strongest man is in the building.
- 13:06Speaker 3: He did.
- 13:07Speaker 2: He made it.
- 13:07Speaker 1: Yeah. The one and only Mark Henry is here. Mark,
- 13:12Speaker 1: please step away from the registration table. You are not
- 13:15Speaker 1: eligible on that. But he is here. So you want
- 13:19Speaker 1: to come out? and, and see the man at least
- 13:22Speaker 1: once known as sexual chocolate. I, I don't know that
- 13:25Speaker 1: he's going so much by it anymore, but, uh, but
- 13:27Speaker 1: he is here and, uh, and, uh, he's, uh, he's
- 13:31Speaker 1: one of our favorites and part of our crew.
- 13:32Speaker 3: So we're going to do that.
- 13:33Speaker 1: Uh, we're going to talk longhorn football as well. Yeah,
- 13:35Speaker 1: we'll do that. Uh, we got to talk about the NFL. We'll,
- 13:38Speaker 1: we'll do that as well. What a bizarre Monday night
- 13:41Speaker 1: football game that was last night. Bizarre in its in
- 13:45Speaker 1: its display and bizarre in its ending as well. We'll
- 13:48Speaker 1: do all of that. But glad to have you with
- 13:50Speaker 1: us out here at Boulevard Social. Hope you'll come on out.
- 13:54Speaker 1: 6215 North Lamar. So shaded toward the north side, not
- 13:58Speaker 1: far from 183 and Anderson Square in that area up there.
- 14:02Speaker 3: Not far from that. Obviously not far.
- 14:04Speaker 1: We're just telling everybody, remember where you had to go
- 14:07Speaker 1: get your driver's license done?
- 14:08Speaker 3: It's right by there as well.
- 14:11Speaker 1: We're going to be here up until 5 o'clock today
- 14:14Speaker 1: as we continue on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the
- 14:16Speaker 1: Zone and where you can always listen to us for
- 14:18Speaker 1: free on the iHeartRadio app.
- 14:20Speaker 6: Your house might have a little dirt on my boots
- 14:23Speaker 6: but i'm taking you uptown tonight might have a little mud.
- 14:27Speaker 2: On my wheels but they're gonna shine with you up
- 14:30Speaker 2: inside gonna hit the club gonna cut it up like
- 14:35Speaker 2: neon lights might have a little dirt on my boots
- 14:39Speaker 2: but we're gonna dance the dust right off them tonight
- 14:43Speaker 2: yeah That's.
- 14:44Speaker 1: The music of John Pardee, and we're going to give
- 14:47Speaker 1: away a pair of tickets to see John Pardee coming
- 14:50Speaker 1: up next month. The little dirt on my boots, we've
- 14:52Speaker 1: all been there. We've all had that, including Anton Leickham,
- 14:56Speaker 1: our producer. By the way, Antonio, did you take care
- 14:58Speaker 1: of your dad on his birthday?
- 15:00Speaker 3: Sure did. Okay, good.
- 15:01Speaker 1: I'm glad to hear that, because his dad's a... a
- 15:04Speaker 1: legendary person, so it's good to hear that. We're out
- 15:06Speaker 1: here at Boulevard Social here on North Lamar, 6215 North Lamar. And, yes, man,
- 15:14Speaker 1: the myth, the legend, he is here with us, the
- 15:18Speaker 1: world's strongest man. And you can hear him with my
- 15:21Speaker 1: Card Bowl Harge Monday through Friday from 6 a.m.
- 15:25Speaker 3: To 9 a.m.
- 15:26Speaker 1: That is the one and only Mark Henry. I'm glad
- 15:28Speaker 1: you're here.
- 15:29Speaker 3: How are you?
- 15:29Speaker 2: I'm doing great, man. I'm doing great, man. I'm trying to...
- 15:33Speaker 2: bring light to.
- 15:33Speaker 1: The world craig you you do that in your own
- 15:36Speaker 1: uh unique fashion i have i have to say that
- 15:39Speaker 1: um you uh what what does a normal mark henry
- 15:43Speaker 1: day look like.
- 15:45Speaker 2: I get up every day at 4 15 brush my
- 15:48Speaker 2: teeth clean up and go do radio with iron mike
- 15:54Speaker 2: harge yeah and uh we're not gonna call him We're
- 15:58Speaker 2: not going to call him Hardball no more.
- 16:00Speaker 3: No, Iron Mike.
- 16:02Speaker 2: Iron Mike. And after radio, I do my daily prayers
- 16:08Speaker 2: and meditation. Okay. Which is followed shortly by a nap.
- 16:14Speaker 3: Okay.
- 16:14Speaker 2: And I get up and do my other show on
- 16:17Speaker 2: Sirius XM at 1230.
- 16:19Speaker 1: Uh-huh.
- 16:19Speaker 2: So from 12 to 3. Okay. I'm off the data.
- 16:24Speaker 1: Well, that's good, and that's why I'm glad you're here.
- 16:27Speaker 1: What time do you normally go to bed at night?
- 16:30Speaker 2: Usually 10 o'clock, but if it's a game that I've
- 16:34Speaker 2: suffered through, like the Cowboys or the Lakers or the Spurs,
- 16:39Speaker 2: then I'll stay up.
- 16:41Speaker 3: Okay.
- 16:41Speaker 2: All right.
- 16:42Speaker 3: So those are the teams you're really vested in.
- 16:45Speaker 2: And the Yankees.
- 16:46Speaker 3: And the Yankees, too. Okay. Yeah, so there's been a
- 16:48Speaker 3: lot of suffering of late.
- 16:50Speaker 2: A lot of suffering, Craig. I watched San Francisco last night.
- 16:54Speaker 1: Uh-huh.
- 16:54Speaker 2: And you said you were going to talk about the
- 16:57Speaker 2: Longhorns and NFL football. I admire San Francisco's offense. The
- 17:05Speaker 2: stuff that they do is so smart and innovative that
- 17:11Speaker 2: I like it. I'm like, wow, just blown away. But
- 17:15Speaker 2: I also, when I see that, I think of my teams,
- 17:18Speaker 2: and I wonder why the Longhorns won't run stuff like that,
- 17:22Speaker 2: why the Cowboys... won't run stuff like that.
- 17:25Speaker 1: You got a Christian McCaffrey handy that could be on
- 17:28Speaker 1: the Texas squad?
- 17:29Speaker 2: Texas got about three or four guys on that sideline that.
- 17:32Speaker 3: Can play that role.
- 17:34Speaker 2: And it's a matter of identifying the talent and creating
- 17:39Speaker 2: the offense around the talent, not using your system or
- 17:43Speaker 2: your intellect in whatever sport to have everybody else be
- 17:47Speaker 2: a part of your thing. When you play, I mean,
- 17:51Speaker 2: if you got... Bill Parcells always said that if I'm
- 17:55Speaker 2: going to coach a team, if I'm going to cook
- 18:00Speaker 2: the meal, I want to buy the groceries. Well, they
- 18:02Speaker 2: have all the groceries. It's a full cupboard. And you
- 18:06Speaker 2: use what you have to make the gumbo. You don't
- 18:10Speaker 2: go and try to make a Mediterranean meal with what
- 18:14Speaker 2: they got. And I think Texas got everything you need
- 18:18Speaker 2: to have a really, really good spread put out. and
- 18:22Speaker 2: it's just not manifested and stuff like that.
- 18:25Speaker 1: I think there's a variety of things, and Cameron and
- 18:27Speaker 1: I have talked about this as well, a variety of
- 18:30Speaker 1: things that have led to what's happened in the last
- 18:32Speaker 1: two weeks for Texas and the difficulties. I think it
- 18:35Speaker 1: would be incorrect and short-sighted depending on any one thing.
- 18:40Speaker 1: If you say, well, it's all on the play calling. Well,
- 18:43Speaker 1: if it's all on the play calling, it's the play
- 18:45Speaker 1: calling that also has worked in the past with this team.
- 18:48Speaker 1: If you say it's all on the offensive line, it's
- 18:53Speaker 1: a lot of the same guys and some veteran guys
- 18:55Speaker 1: who have performed well. If you say it's on the quarterback,
- 18:59Speaker 1: the quarterback has proven he can play well as well.
- 19:01Speaker 1: The second half of last season, obviously the fourth quarter
- 19:04Speaker 1: of the Ohio State game cut to mine. But if
- 19:06Speaker 1: you say that, if you say that it is the
- 19:10Speaker 1: running backs not hitting the hole or the wide receivers
- 19:13Speaker 1: not getting released, if you say special teams issues we
- 19:17Speaker 1: saw a punt return for a touchdown last week the
- 19:19Speaker 1: week after giving up a block punt for a touchdown
- 19:23Speaker 1: in other words I think there's any number of things
- 19:26Speaker 1: you can point at without saying this is definitely the
- 19:29Speaker 1: reason why they've lost back-to-back games.
- 19:31Speaker 3: And that's why it's so frustrating Craig I mean even
- 19:33Speaker 3: even Sark seems frustrated about it when he talks to
- 19:36Speaker 3: the media after the game Saturday or even on Monday
- 19:39Speaker 3: yesterday with us is that it's not just one thing,
- 19:42Speaker 3: but it's also things that Texas has done well at
- 19:44Speaker 3: times this season, right? Was the Ohio State fourth quarter
- 19:48Speaker 3: just an anomaly or is that, part of what the
- 19:50Speaker 3: team can be and i think a lot of texas
- 19:52Speaker 3: fans including myself thought okay if that fourth quarter mark
- 19:56Speaker 3: is what texas can be then this is the best
- 19:58Speaker 3: team in the country and we see it in spurts
- 20:01Speaker 3: right we see the first quarter against tennessee and then
- 20:03Speaker 3: maybe the last quarter besides that that last hill mary
- 20:06Speaker 3: drive from the volunteers we see it The opening drive
- 20:09Speaker 3: against Florida, right? The first 15 plays of the game,
- 20:13Speaker 3: you know, Sarko the offense was humming. The defense had
- 20:16Speaker 3: pushed Florida back. You're winning the field position battle. It
- 20:18Speaker 3: leads to a short yardage punt in which Ryan Niblett
- 20:21Speaker 3: takes it back to the house, right? Things that which
- 20:23Speaker 3: Texas has been able to do successfully the last couple
- 20:25Speaker 3: years have done so. And then, Craig, for quarters... Two, three,
- 20:30Speaker 3: and four, it kind of goes away. And it's like, okay,
- 20:32Speaker 3: we were doing it right here. Now, all of a sudden,
- 20:35Speaker 3: it's completely gone. It's trying to find that consistency. But
- 20:38Speaker 3: the scary thing is that it seems like the staff
- 20:41Speaker 3: might be flummoxed with some of these issues.
- 20:45Speaker 2: The thing about it is you don't need to be rehabbed.
- 20:49Speaker 2: It don't need to be scrapped.
- 20:51Speaker 1: It needs to be adjusted.
- 20:53Speaker 2: There's always got to be countermeasures. And Texas does not
- 20:58Speaker 2: do a good job at countermeasuring and coming out of
- 21:02Speaker 2: halftime and having answers to what they just saw. Let's
- 21:07Speaker 2: just make it up. Orange goes to the line of scrimmage.
- 21:11Speaker 2: They walk up seven. And he does this. Now, this
- 21:17Speaker 2: signal means short. We're going short. Wide receivers need to
- 21:23Speaker 2: know whatever the next call that he makes tells them
- 21:26Speaker 2: where they're going to go, in or out. Whatever signal
- 21:31Speaker 2: that is, is that signal. For three weeks in a
- 21:35Speaker 2: row now, their teams have walked seven guys up to
- 21:39Speaker 2: the line, and they've showed that they're coming or they're
- 21:42Speaker 2: going to drop one. Arch can take three steps, maybe
- 21:47Speaker 2: five steps if he's lucky, And he would know where
- 21:50Speaker 2: to hit somebody short. That's football IQ. He's got to
- 21:56Speaker 2: get better at understanding, but he can't do nothing without
- 22:01Speaker 2: the permission of the head coach and the coordinator, which
- 22:07Speaker 2: is the same person.
- 22:08Speaker 3: Okay.
- 22:09Speaker 2: So he's going to have to make the adjustments. They're
- 22:13Speaker 2: going to have to learn how to cut it off.
- 22:16Speaker 2: Dak Prescott, he sucked the other day too. Because they
- 22:20Speaker 2: walked seven up and they would bring people and he
- 22:23Speaker 2: didn't adjust. They kept long routes. If you keep long
- 22:27Speaker 2: routes and you got seven people, you got five blockers.
- 22:30Speaker 1: Then he got, here we go. And then all of
- 22:32Speaker 1: a sudden they're coming in on it.
- 22:33Speaker 2: So everybody's on your face. So they have to make adjustments.
- 22:37Speaker 2: And it's not rocket science. I'm not a football savant,
- 22:41Speaker 2: but I know how to see. I know my math
- 22:47Speaker 2: is sound. They have seven. We have five.
- 22:50Speaker 1: They're trying to outnumber you. And for folks who say, well,
- 22:55Speaker 1: they're getting away from the run game, when they're outnumbering
- 22:58Speaker 1: the offensive line up front, it's going to be difficult
- 23:01Speaker 1: to get the running game going.
- 23:02Speaker 3: Or stop it.
- 23:03Speaker 2: Stop it. We're going to run. And you run at
- 23:07Speaker 2: whatever the weakest side. And that's You know, good quarterbacks
- 23:11Speaker 2: make those calls and adjustments.
- 23:14Speaker 1: So what you're saying is that this is mainly at
- 23:17Speaker 1: the line of scrimmage, a communication issue.
- 23:19Speaker 2: It's a communication issue all the way. And they can
- 23:22Speaker 2: fix it in a weekend. I mean, you might be
- 23:26Speaker 2: up for 48 hours, but you'll get those calls together.
- 23:31Speaker 2: And it's a small room. It's probably like 45 guys
- 23:35Speaker 2: on that complete offense, even to the scout teams. And
- 23:40Speaker 2: they can just go over, guys, this is the new
- 23:42Speaker 2: signal for short. We're going to switch to short. When
- 23:46Speaker 2: you see that, hey, we're going short. Whatever was happening
- 23:48Speaker 2: before is done. We're shortening it. They're coming. And if
- 23:53Speaker 2: they don't come, then arch run. Or throw the dump down.
- 24:00Speaker 2: It's still football.
- 24:04Speaker 1: Well, it is in terms of still blocking and tackling
- 24:07Speaker 1: and things on the offensive side. To Mark's point, it's
- 24:11Speaker 1: still about being able to block the play correctly and
- 24:14Speaker 1: be able to outnumber the defense, whether it's on the
- 24:16Speaker 1: edges or what you're doing with the running game.
- 24:19Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think the biggest thing we've seen so
- 24:21Speaker 3: far these last couple games, guys, is that team's ability
- 24:24Speaker 3: to blitz Arch Manning and Texas and have success, right?
- 24:27Speaker 3: It seems right now, and Sark talked about it, The
- 24:29Speaker 3: book is out on Texas. To really get Arch Manning
- 24:32Speaker 3: uncomfortable is through just blitz, right? Whether it's you send
- 24:35Speaker 3: in six or seven or eight, a lot of all-out
- 24:37Speaker 3: blitzes have been very successful. And Sark did a good job,
- 24:40Speaker 3: I thought, of getting into 10 personnel in that Florida game.
- 24:43Speaker 3: But the issue is, is obviously with 10 personnel, you
- 24:47Speaker 3: only have one, you have no tight ends in. So
- 24:49Speaker 3: you have no one to pick up the blitz. And
- 24:50Speaker 3: right now, Texas run blockers, Smothers, Brown, aren't the best
- 24:54Speaker 3: in pass protection. So a lot of these teams here
- 24:56Speaker 3: are just, we're going to send the blitz here enforce
- 24:59Speaker 3: arch to make a throw and and what what it's
- 25:01Speaker 3: doing is i think it's it's speeding up his process
- 25:03Speaker 3: internally to where he is not able to either identify
- 25:06Speaker 3: the blitz coming correctly or he's just under pressure so
- 25:10Speaker 3: quickly that i gotta get the ball out right and
- 25:11Speaker 3: we're seeing plays where of course you can take a
- 25:13Speaker 3: screenshot of a play right and say well this guy
- 25:15Speaker 3: was wide open here well when you're being blitzed and
- 25:17Speaker 3: you have a guy in your face within 1.2 seconds
- 25:19Speaker 3: it's hard to see that you're you have okay i
- 25:22Speaker 3: have one guy i'm gonna throw and a lot of
- 25:23Speaker 3: times it's been cam coleman And we've seen a couple
- 25:25Speaker 3: times it's worked out, and a couple times it's been intercepted.
- 25:28Speaker 3: The Rhino-Wingle passed the double coverage, right? So for Texas,
- 25:32Speaker 3: if they can find out a way, figure out a
- 25:34Speaker 3: way to give Arch more time, but also to be
- 25:37Speaker 3: able to identify those blitzes, I think Texas can have
- 25:40Speaker 3: a little bit more success. But we talked about it.
- 25:43Speaker 3: What's the definition of insanity, right? Doing the same thing
- 25:45Speaker 3: over and over again and expecting a different result. And
- 25:48Speaker 3: so far, Tennessee, you won that game. But Tennessee, Oklahoma, Florida,
- 25:52Speaker 3: I think we've had the same three issues that have
- 25:54Speaker 3: played Texas, and they beat Tennessee, almost beat OU, almost
- 25:58Speaker 3: beat Florida, but now you've lost two in a row
- 26:00Speaker 3: and one more loss, and I could say you're probably
- 26:02Speaker 3: officially eliminated from the college football playoff, which is hard
- 26:05Speaker 3: to imagine two weeks ago, right, when Texas was number one.
- 26:08Speaker 2: In the country.
- 26:09Speaker 1: Yeah, and I've seen a lot of people say it's
- 26:13Speaker 1: a must win. Somebody asked, I think it was Kirk
- 26:15Speaker 1: Bowles asked Justin Cryer yesterday, he goes, is this a
- 26:18Speaker 1: must win? And Justin Cryer said, they're all. must wins
- 26:21Speaker 1: at this point.
- 26:23Speaker 2: He's 100% right. I like the, Harge played some sound
- 26:27Speaker 2: today of Cryer talking about accountability and not being able
- 26:36Speaker 2: to blame it on the coach or blame it on
- 26:39Speaker 2: the quarterback. You got to blame it on everybody.
- 26:42Speaker 3: Everybody.
- 26:43Speaker 1: I mean, there's examples on defense and special teams I
- 26:46Speaker 1: can isolate as well.
- 26:47Speaker 2: Right. And the same thing with the offensive line. They
- 26:49Speaker 2: got freeze frames of guys running into each other and
- 26:53Speaker 2: different things like there's a lot of stuff that needs
- 26:56Speaker 2: to be ironed out but sometimes you have to simplify
- 27:02Speaker 2: and i don't believe in treating everybody the same i
- 27:07Speaker 2: play favorites i.
- 27:09Speaker 1: Do first coach i ever heard say that was jimmy
- 27:12Speaker 1: johnson He used to say, I'll play favorites. If you're
- 27:16Speaker 1: giving me more production, you're the better player than the
- 27:18Speaker 1: other guy, I'm not treating everybody the same.
- 27:20Speaker 2: That's good policy. That's maybe why I like him so much.
- 27:25Speaker 2: But that's something that I feel like needs to be done.
- 27:29Speaker 2: You know, you got guys that are really, really talented.
- 27:32Speaker 2: Try them at different places. You know, I'd love to
- 27:35Speaker 2: see Wingo line up in the backfield and run a
- 27:38Speaker 2: Texas route. I'd love to see Bishop you know, in
- 27:41Speaker 2: the slot running a fade and having everybody go the
- 27:45Speaker 2: opposite direction and leave him one-on-one with anybody. And you
- 27:50Speaker 2: just throw it to the sideline. If he can't get it,
- 27:53Speaker 2: then it goes out of bounds. Like, you put guys
- 27:57Speaker 2: in position to use their gifting. And that's just the
- 28:01Speaker 2: one thing that I keep hearing from other fans because
- 28:06Speaker 2: at the end of the day, we're fans. We're not
- 28:08Speaker 2: football people. Those coaches over there are football people.
- 28:13Speaker 1: Yeah, but you have a more respected and developed appreciation
- 28:26Speaker 1: intellectually of what goes on with the football team. And,
- 28:31Speaker 1: you know, the rank and file fans, they're fans. And
- 28:35Speaker 1: there's nothing wrong with that. But they're not most of
- 28:39Speaker 1: those people, a vast majority, have not played the game.
- 28:42Speaker 2: They can't go to the chalkboard.
- 28:44Speaker 3: Right. Exactly.
- 28:45Speaker 2: Chalkboard will make people pee on themselves. Yeah. I'm not
- 28:48Speaker 2: afraid of chalkboard. I know the structure of five or
- 28:51Speaker 2: six different offenses.
- 28:53Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 28:53Speaker 2: And I love football. I study it. I watch video
- 28:57Speaker 2: over and over. I watch games that I know the
- 28:59Speaker 2: ending to. I watch it again.
- 29:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:02Speaker 2: I'm crazy, Craig.
- 29:03Speaker 3: No, no, no. I'm crazy like a fox.
- 29:05Speaker 2: It's a sickness. But I love it. And when I
- 29:09Speaker 2: see something that's wrong, I can't help but wonder why
- 29:13Speaker 2: other people don't see it.
- 29:14Speaker 3: Okay. We'll talk some more about that.
- 29:17Speaker 1: I want to get your guys' thoughts on, speaking of crazy,
- 29:22Speaker 1: the crazy world of what we're seeing in college football,
- 29:24Speaker 1: what we just saw history made over the past weekend
- 29:28Speaker 1: with the number one, two, five, six, and seven ranked
- 29:32Speaker 1: teams in the nation all going down to defeat and
- 29:36Speaker 1: some other surprises as well. We'll get to all of that.
- 29:38Speaker 1: We're out here at Boulevard So here on North Austin.
- 29:41Speaker 3: Brand new place. Hope you'll come on out.
- 29:43Speaker 2: Nice.
- 29:44Speaker 1: And, yeah, this is a lot of fun. You can
- 29:47Speaker 1: come out here and sit outside, inside here, watch the games.
- 29:50Speaker 1: The NBA is underway. Game number one with Pistons and
- 29:53Speaker 1: Celtics are playing. And, again, come on out. We'll be
- 29:56Speaker 1: here until 5. Get your name in the registration box.
- 30:00Speaker 1: because that's how you could win a pair of tickets
- 30:01Speaker 1: to the Saturdays game between Texas and Ole Miss. Or
- 30:06Speaker 1: John Pardee, you could do that as well for his
- 30:10Speaker 1: next show.
- 30:10Speaker 3: We're going to give away tickets to both.
- 30:12Speaker 1: We'll get to all of that and more when we
- 30:14Speaker 1: continue here on a Tuesday from Boulevard Social, 6215 North
- 30:19Speaker 1: Lamar on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone and
- 30:21Speaker 1: the iHeartRadio app. You know, we're out here at Boulevard Social,
- 30:25Speaker 1: 6215 North Lamar. But it is, fellas, a Texan Tuesday
- 30:32Speaker 1: that was established by none other than Cameron Parker when
- 30:35Speaker 1: Cameron was producing this program. And by the way, to
- 30:41Speaker 1: let people know what's Texan Tuesday all about, among the
- 30:44Speaker 1: return cuts in the 4 o'clock hour, Jay Kerman, the producer,
- 30:48Speaker 1: will bump back with the king, something from the king,
- 30:50Speaker 1: George Strait, in the 3 o'clock hour from the iconic
- 30:53Speaker 1: Willie Nelson.
- 30:53Speaker 3: And here in the 2 o'clock hour, as we just heard, the.
- 30:57Speaker 3: The immortal Stevie Ray Vaughan. That feels like 100 years ago, Craig.
- 31:02Speaker 3: Back when I was your producer. But it was only
- 31:04Speaker 3: about a year ago. I mean, I don't even remember
- 31:06Speaker 3: what honestly started. Because with a three-hour show and your
- 31:10Speaker 3: love for music and my love for music, too, it
- 31:12Speaker 3: was like, how can we think of ways to come
- 31:14Speaker 3: back out of break and not just play, I don't know,
- 31:18Speaker 3: random music? And it was like, well, Texas, that could
- 31:21Speaker 3: be easy Thursday or Tuesday. And for some reason, it
- 31:23Speaker 3: just turned into... Texan Tuesday, of course, Yacht Rock Wednesday,
- 31:28Speaker 3: Longhorns Monday, and I think Friday was Feel Good Friday?
- 31:32Speaker 1: No, no, no. Didn't you get Fire Me Up?
- 31:35Speaker 3: Fire Me Up Friday.
- 31:36Speaker 1: Fire Me Up Friday. You don't have to get Friday
- 31:38Speaker 1: to be fired up if you're Mark Henry. He does
- 31:40Speaker 1: that as well. I wake up like that, Craig. Yeah,
- 31:44Speaker 1: you're ready to go with that. What would you say,
- 31:48Speaker 1: this ought to be interesting, what was the most outrageous
- 31:52Speaker 1: way in which you entered the ring? What was the
- 31:57Speaker 1: most outrageous thing that was ever done? Did you ever
- 31:59Speaker 1: get lowered from a ceiling or come in with all
- 32:01Speaker 1: kinds of costuming? What was the most outrageous or craziest
- 32:09Speaker 1: or outlandish way at any one time, whether it was
- 32:13Speaker 1: at WrestleMania or a different match or whatever, that you
- 32:17Speaker 1: entered the ring?
- 32:19Speaker 2: The... one of the, one of the first shows, one of, yeah,
- 32:24Speaker 2: there we go. One of the first shows on SmackDown, uh, three,
- 32:29Speaker 2: six mafia did my music.
- 32:31Speaker 3: Okay.
- 32:31Speaker 2: And, uh, they had the whole band and group come
- 32:36Speaker 2: out and sing me to the ring.
- 32:38Speaker 1: Okay.
- 32:39Speaker 2: And so like that, that was one of the kind
- 32:43Speaker 2: of more iconic moments is if you will. But I,
- 32:46Speaker 2: I still had to walk down there. I didn't get
- 32:48Speaker 2: to fly in. You weren't on cables that were lifted in? No,
- 32:53Speaker 2: I never got to do none of that crazy.
- 32:55Speaker 3: I'm sure part of that was you didn't want to
- 32:56Speaker 3: be lifted.
- 32:57Speaker 2: Down, right?
- 32:59Speaker 1: Craig, you know I got a bunch of phobias, right?
- 33:01Speaker 1: Is one of them heights?
- 33:02Speaker 2: Heights is one of them. Spiders, snakes. I'm claustrophobic. There's
- 33:08Speaker 2: so much wrong with me.
- 33:09Speaker 1: You have almost as many phobias and problems as Jake Herman,
- 33:14Speaker 1: our producer. He's got 27 at least known food allergies.
- 33:18Speaker 3: And I'm allergic to a.
- 33:20Speaker 2: Bunch of stuff, too. Are you really?
- 33:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 33:23Speaker 2: Did me and Jake just become best friends?
- 33:26Speaker 1: Well, Jake would like that, you know. I'm sure about that. Jake,
- 33:30Speaker 1: this is Jake Herman, our producer in the studio. In
- 33:32Speaker 1: addition to the, I think we nailed down 27 known
- 33:35Speaker 1: food allergies that you have and other things, do you
- 33:38Speaker 1: have any other phobias or irrational fears that torment you?
- 33:44Speaker 4: I'm trying to, well, first of all, nice to hear
- 33:47Speaker 4: from you guys, too.
- 33:47Speaker 3: Hope you're having a great time out there. Yeah. I mean,
- 33:51Speaker 3: the fear of missing out is always a tough one.
- 33:54Speaker 3: You're a big FOMO guy, aren't you? Yeah.
- 33:57Speaker 1: When it comes to sporting events especially, if there's one
- 33:59Speaker 1: going on and I can't keep tabs on it, yeah, I've.
- 34:01Speaker 3: Got a fear of missing out.
- 34:03Speaker 2: Okay.
- 34:03Speaker 1: All right. That's good. Here's why I bring all of
- 34:06Speaker 1: this up. And you let me know, Mark, if this
- 34:10Speaker 1: would go with you. Have you heard what LeBron's doing
- 34:12Speaker 1: in terms of getting to the games?
- 34:14Speaker 2: The helicopter thing?
- 34:15Speaker 1: Yeah. This is Wilt Chamberlain 2026, 2027 version. You know,
- 34:17Speaker 1: when Wilt Chamberlain played for the Philadelphia Warriors in the
- 34:26Speaker 1: early 60s, including when he had the 100-point game on
- 34:28Speaker 1: March 2, 1962. He commuted from New York. He lived
- 34:32Speaker 1: in New York. He lived in Harlem. And he commuted
- 34:35Speaker 1: and drove himself in the convertible most of the time.
- 34:38Speaker 1: He did have a driver on occasion to do that.
- 34:40Speaker 1: But he would commute in for the games. On the
- 34:43Speaker 1: night he scored 100 points in the game in Hershey, Pennsylvania,
- 34:47Speaker 1: he'd been up late at.
- 34:49Speaker 2: A club in New York.
- 34:52Speaker 1: The next day, they drive in, and they were playing
- 34:55Speaker 1: that game in Hershey, Pennsylvania, and he goes like in
- 34:57Speaker 1: an arcade and like apparently won a whole bunch of
- 35:00Speaker 1: prizes and stuff and goes out on very little sleep
- 35:03Speaker 1: and scores 100 points in the game. And then he
- 35:07Speaker 1: got somebody to drive him back to New York. So
- 35:09Speaker 1: LeBron James, never at a loss for theatrics, is commuting
- 35:16Speaker 1: from Philadelphia to New York for games. when he has that,
- 35:23Speaker 1: and that it is perfectly appropriate, says Adam Silver. The
- 35:28Speaker 1: commissioner said he has a deal with Fanatics. It's perfectly appropriate.
- 35:31Speaker 1: Part of his deal is they're going to supply a
- 35:33Speaker 1: helicopter to him. As long as it's just a deal
- 35:37Speaker 1: between the Fanatics and LeBron and no team is involved,
- 35:41Speaker 1: there's no rules issue there whatsoever. So he decided to
- 35:45Speaker 1: live in New York.
- 35:46Speaker 2: So.
- 35:47Speaker 1: and it's a decision that players have made before him,
- 35:51Speaker 1: including his former coach, J.J.
- 35:53Speaker 2: Redick.
- 35:53Speaker 1: But the fact that he's going by helicopter, I think,
- 35:57Speaker 1: makes it interesting.
- 35:58Speaker 3: It's 110 miles.
- 35:59Speaker 2: It's easy, though, because there's a helicopter pad on top
- 36:02Speaker 2: of the garden. Right. And Hank Ratner, you know, lives
- 36:05Speaker 2: out there in Long Island. He takes a helicopter into
- 36:07Speaker 2: work every day. So, like, my buddy Jamal is the
- 36:12Speaker 2: GM of the Knicks. Yeah.
- 36:16Speaker 3: Does he helicopter in?
- 36:17Speaker 2: You know what? I've never asked him has he been
- 36:21Speaker 2: in a helicopter before, but I'm sure that he's very
- 36:24Speaker 2: aware that, hey, helicopter lands in five minutes. I guarantee you.
- 36:29Speaker 1: You say you have a fear of heights. Would you
- 36:31Speaker 1: not then want to get in a helicopter?
- 36:33Speaker 2: No.
- 36:34Speaker 3: Okay.
- 36:35Speaker 2: No, that's a no. That's a big no.
- 36:37Speaker 1: But you have to fly. You fly internationally.
- 36:40Speaker 2: You know?
- 36:41Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 36:41Speaker 1: Weren't you doing part of the show, Harge? Weren't you
- 36:43Speaker 1: doing part of the show when he was over in
- 36:44Speaker 1: Scotland or something last year?
- 36:46Speaker 2: Man, I'm so sleepy when I get on a plane.
- 36:49Speaker 2: I won't go to sleep, like, on those long flights,
- 36:52Speaker 2: eight hours.
- 36:53Speaker 1: Yeah. You don't sleep?
- 36:54Speaker 2: No, I stay up the whole day before so I
- 36:56Speaker 2: can get on the plane and just knock out.
- 36:58Speaker 1: Okay.
- 36:59Speaker 2: Because I don't, I'll eventually have to, like, get up
- 37:02Speaker 2: and go to the bathroom or something like that.
- 37:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 37:04Speaker 2: I don't like to eat on planes.
- 37:06Speaker 3: Okay.
- 37:06Speaker 2: So I don't have to go to the bathroom.
- 37:09Speaker 3: Okay.
- 37:09Speaker 2: So there's a lot of things about the plane that
- 37:12Speaker 2: I just try to sit in a seat and sleep.
- 37:14Speaker 1: Okay.
- 37:15Speaker 3: All right. I just wondered about that.
- 37:16Speaker 1: I mean, I think it's a pretty unique thing that
- 37:20Speaker 1: we're seeing for that.
- 37:21Speaker 3: And there was an interesting reaction from the public, Craig.
- 37:24Speaker 3: At first, people didn't like it. And the Athletic had
- 37:27Speaker 3: a piece where they compared it to Kobe Bryant and
- 37:29Speaker 3: how LeBron is the same age as Kobe Bryant when
- 37:33Speaker 3: he had his tragic helicopter accident. I think all of
- 37:36Speaker 3: a sudden, to me, it was like, why is there
- 37:38Speaker 3: so much outcry about LeBron taking a helicopter to work?
- 37:41Speaker 3: It happens every day. People fly every single day. It's
- 37:44Speaker 3: safer to fly than it is to get in a
- 37:46Speaker 3: car and drive, especially in Austin, especially driving from New
- 37:50Speaker 3: York to Philadelphia. The whole reason why LeBron chose the 76ers,
- 37:53Speaker 3: or a big part of it, was the ability for
- 37:55Speaker 3: him to be able to live in New York City
- 37:57Speaker 3: in the commute to work. That was one of the
- 38:00Speaker 3: key points that brought him to the Philadelphia 76ers. I
- 38:03Speaker 3: know he said in the media it was to help
- 38:05Speaker 3: Joel Embiid win a championship. That's cap, complete cap. He
- 38:09Speaker 3: does not care about Embiid winning a ring. But that
- 38:11Speaker 3: was part of the draw was for him to be
- 38:14Speaker 3: able to live in New York City. He's a businessman.
- 38:16Speaker 3: But I'm curious the reaction that came from people freaking
- 38:19Speaker 3: out about him being in a helicopter because to me
- 38:21Speaker 3: it's safer than driving.
- 38:22Speaker 2: People are so morbid. I'm very sure that LeBron never
- 38:27Speaker 2: thought about that. Oh, I'm the same age as Kobe. Oh,
- 38:31Speaker 2: Kobe died in a helicopter crash. That never crosses my mind.
- 38:35Speaker 2: If it did, then that makes him a part of
- 38:38Speaker 2: the weird community.
- 38:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 38:41Speaker 1: You consider yourself part of the weird community? I am, unfortunately.
- 38:45Speaker 3: I thought so.
- 38:46Speaker 2: But you know what, Craig? I embrace it. Because I
- 38:49Speaker 2: see the guys come up with the action figures. I
- 38:51Speaker 2: love comics. You know, I love. Like science fiction.
- 38:56Speaker 3: Right.
- 38:56Speaker 2: You know, I'm a nerd at heart, but I just
- 38:59Speaker 2: happen to have been an athlete.
- 39:00Speaker 1: Okay.
- 39:01Speaker 3: All right.
- 39:02Speaker 1: That, of course, is the world's strongest man, Mark Henry.
- 39:04Speaker 1: We have more with him. We're going to wrap up
- 39:06Speaker 1: hour number one coming up. Glad you're with us today.
- 39:08Speaker 1: Come on out to Boulevard Social. If you haven't been
- 39:10Speaker 1: here before on North Lamar, pretty easy to get to.
- 39:14Speaker 1: And get your name in the registration box. We're going
- 39:16Speaker 1: to give away a pair of Texas Ole Miss tickets.
- 39:21Speaker 1: a pair of tickets to see John Pardee as well.
- 39:23Speaker 1: So we're going to do all that and more when
- 39:25Speaker 1: we continue on Sports Radio AM 13 under.
- 39:27Speaker 3: The zone at the IR Radio app.
- 39:53Speaker 1: Hour number two of three hours worth of radio and
- 39:58Speaker 1: all that that entails. Glad to be with you here
- 40:00Speaker 1: this afternoon and out in the city. just uh you
- 40:07Speaker 1: know sequestered in the studio uh out means we're at
- 40:10Speaker 1: boulevard social and it's at 62 15 north of our
- 40:14Speaker 1: i think that we've established uh you know some of
- 40:18Speaker 1: the landmarks like the the the old driver's license bureau
- 40:21Speaker 1: and the water burger there uh hardball hards wanted to
- 40:25Speaker 1: remind people that's near uh a gentleman's establishment up the
- 40:29Speaker 1: street that's been well-known?
- 40:32Speaker 5: I was just saying it's world famous. So I was
- 40:34Speaker 5: just saying it's not too far from there. For those
- 40:37Speaker 5: that have– Who would identify. Yeah, that you're looking for landmarks.
- 40:40Speaker 5: I know that there's a lot of people with landmarks
- 40:42Speaker 5: like that.
- 40:43Speaker 2: They turned my mic on because they knew I was
- 40:45Speaker 2: going to say, oh, yeller.
- 40:48Speaker 1: Yeah, so there's that. Not far from Violet Crown. Not
- 40:52Speaker 1: far from Style Switch.
- 40:55Speaker 2: Yep.
- 40:55Speaker 3: You know, all that stuff.
- 40:56Speaker 2: Yeah, just say SoundSwitch.
- 40:58Speaker 1: Yeah, you can hardly go wrong with that. So anyway,
- 41:00Speaker 1: we're out here at Boulevard Social. And if you haven't
- 41:04Speaker 1: been out here and sampled the live music they have
- 41:07Speaker 1: out here and can sit outdoors, indoors, the weather's getting
- 41:10Speaker 1: really nice when you can do that. What a place.
- 41:13Speaker 3: What a place to do it.
- 41:16Speaker 1: This is day number one of the NBA, the new season.
- 41:19Speaker 1: Celtics are putting it on the Pistons right now. They're
- 41:23Speaker 1: up 12 with two minutes remaining in the half of 53-41.
- 41:26Speaker 1: So Celtics are going to be one of those teams
- 41:28Speaker 1: to watch. I wanted to jump back to some college
- 41:31Speaker 1: football stuff for a moment. First of all, big news
- 41:34Speaker 1: coming from the Plains. Auburn has kicked their star linebacker
- 41:38Speaker 1: off the team. Xavier Atkins, suspended for the game when
- 41:42Speaker 1: they beat George on Saturday. Alex Golish, the first-year head coach,
- 41:47Speaker 1: had been noncommittal about his future earlier today, said he
- 41:53Speaker 1: was still working through it, but now we're seeing that
- 41:58Speaker 1: he has been dismissed from the football team as well.
- 42:03Speaker 2: Did they list a reason why?
- 42:06Speaker 1: Just a violation of team rules is what has been
- 42:10Speaker 1: And he said it was all going to be handled in-house.
- 42:15Speaker 1: Atkins himself went ahead and tweeted out something. He said,
- 42:19Speaker 1: I have nothing but respect. Auburn University will continue to
- 42:22Speaker 1: support my teammates this season. My focus is on my health,
- 42:24Speaker 1: my family, and on finishing up the academic semester strong.
- 42:28Speaker 1: And I'll be entering the transfer portal at the appropriate time. Ooh.
- 42:34Speaker 5: So we know that's good. Things like that do happen.
- 42:38Speaker 5: That's how that goes down every once in a while.
- 42:40Speaker 5: So you start to see how the changes can happen abruptly.
- 42:45Speaker 5: And then you also look at what happened in Oregon,
- 42:48Speaker 5: the leading receiver, Evan Stewart, who had problems.
- 42:51Speaker 1: We've heard his name before.
- 42:51Speaker 5: Yeah, we've heard his name at Texas A & M. He, too,
- 42:55Speaker 5: has been charged with DUI, and now he has been
- 42:59Speaker 5: suspended indefinitely for And we'll see how Coach Lanning handles
- 43:03Speaker 5: that moving forward.
- 43:06Speaker 1: Okay. So, you know, there's that that's happened as well.
- 43:12Speaker 1: UCLA is unbeaten and ranked, but they don't have Nico
- 43:15Speaker 1: Aliaba anymore. He's done for the rest of the season.
- 43:18Speaker 2: Oh, I thought you did.
- 43:19Speaker 3: So, yeah. So he's done for the year. Having to
- 43:23Speaker 3: have surgery.
- 43:25Speaker 2: Oh, man. That dude had so much troubles going into...
- 43:30Speaker 2: Being able to have this season to show that he
- 43:33Speaker 2: was worth.
- 43:34Speaker 3: All the hype.
- 43:34Speaker 1: It was really playing well.
- 43:35Speaker 2: It was playing well, and it's a shame that this happened.
- 43:39Speaker 3: Yeah, so that has happened.
- 43:42Speaker 1: And then, on top of all of that sort of stuff,
- 43:46Speaker 1: you had all the upsets last week in college football
- 43:50Speaker 1: last weekend.
- 43:51Speaker 3: So the polls this week.
- 43:53Speaker 1: If you just go with the AP poll, you got
- 43:55Speaker 1: Miami number one, BYU two, Ohio State three, Notre Dame four,
- 44:00Speaker 1: followed by Georgia, Indiana, Ole Miss, Texas Tech, UCLA, and Utah.
- 44:05Speaker 1: That rounds out the top ten. So it's going to
- 44:08Speaker 1: ask the question, pretender, contender, out of those groups? Pretenders,
- 44:14Speaker 1: a lot of them.
- 44:15Speaker 5: You sit there and look at how the season's going
- 44:17Speaker 5: to end up. A lot of them are going to
- 44:18Speaker 5: beat each other. But the real thing is, how do
- 44:21Speaker 5: they get themselves set up in the College football playoffs,
- 44:26Speaker 5: where are they going to be branched up at? If
- 44:28Speaker 5: you know how you seed them and you see how
- 44:31Speaker 5: it gets redone, we'll see how those play out. But
- 44:34Speaker 5: a lot of these teams, you know, they're continuing to
- 44:36Speaker 5: find a way to win, which I would love to
- 44:38Speaker 5: be in that so we could even say pretender or contender. Right,
- 44:42Speaker 5: to be in the conversation.
- 44:43Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 44:44Speaker 1: And while two losses, certainly in a powerful conference, is
- 44:48Speaker 1: not going to kill off your chances, the Longhorns know
- 44:51Speaker 1: that they're running out of opportunities and that they're really
- 44:54Speaker 1: going to have to get– Get busy and get all
- 44:56Speaker 1: this stuff in order.
- 44:57Speaker 2: Let's see how they're matched up in the college football
- 45:00Speaker 2: playoff against some of these SEC teams. Because there's some
- 45:05Speaker 2: teams that are going to run into Missouri. They're going
- 45:07Speaker 2: to run into Tennessee. And they're going to get a whooping.
- 45:13Speaker 2: Because they don't play competition like that throughout the season.
- 45:18Speaker 2: I can see BYU being able to stand up. They
- 45:23Speaker 2: went out and got some guys.
- 45:25Speaker 3: Yep.
- 45:25Speaker 2: And, you know, some of them guys, Craig, are like
- 45:29Speaker 2: Vanderbilt last year. They're 25, 26 years old. They're men already.
- 45:34Speaker 1: Well, and in the case of BYU, a lot of
- 45:36Speaker 1: it has to do with the mission. Right, right.
- 45:39Speaker 2: I get it, but I'm just saying, like, you know,
- 45:42Speaker 2: if he's 30, then, you know, I'm played against some
- 45:46Speaker 2: of them.
- 45:47Speaker 1: Listen, to borrow the phrase, they've had a lot of
- 45:50Speaker 1: those quote-unquote grown-ass men for a long time. But this
- 45:53Speaker 1: particular group seems to be something, you know, a little
- 45:57Speaker 1: bit more special.
- 45:58Speaker 3: Yeah, and you're right.
- 45:59Speaker 5: They've been doing this for a long time, and they
- 46:01Speaker 5: haven't been this successful as they've been with Satake. And,
- 46:04Speaker 5: you know, you can start to look at it. A
- 46:06Speaker 5: lot of folks already looked at Ohio State as the
- 46:08Speaker 5: number one team. Now with Julian San being injured, you
- 46:12Speaker 5: don't know what's going to happen because his backup was
- 46:14Speaker 5: not very good. And if you look across college football,
- 46:17Speaker 5: a lot of the backups aren't as good as obviously
- 46:21Speaker 5: the starter and their starters for a reason that game
- 46:24Speaker 5: against indiana against ohio state if indiana gets their foot
- 46:27Speaker 5: in bounds it's a different story and they're probably the
- 46:30Speaker 5: number one or number two team in the land especially
- 46:33Speaker 5: coming back from that you look at what notre dame
- 46:36Speaker 5: was able to do and if they got that one
- 46:38Speaker 5: more second we see what happens when you get one
- 46:40Speaker 5: more second anything can happen there and then of course
- 46:44Speaker 5: the georgia bulldogs i guarantee you um Kirby Smart is
- 46:48Speaker 5: not going to let one defeat beat them twice.
- 46:51Speaker 2: That sounds like that old, if was a fifth, we'd
- 46:54Speaker 2: all be drunk. You can't say if. One second, it expired.
- 47:02Speaker 3: It was Bill Schrodinger.
- 47:03Speaker 1: If my aunt had Gucci Donuts, she'd be my uncle.
- 47:07Speaker 2: I love that. Man, I can't wait to see him
- 47:10Speaker 2: this year. I'm going to get to see him a
- 47:11Speaker 2: lot in San Antonio. But I just feel like if
- 47:15Speaker 2: it would have happened, it would have happened. It didn't.
- 47:18Speaker 2: And I can't hang my hat on if they'd have
- 47:21Speaker 2: had one more second or if he'd have got his
- 47:23Speaker 2: foot in the bag.
- 47:24Speaker 1: They'd have had one more play, but we don't know
- 47:26Speaker 1: what the outcome would have been of the one more play,
- 47:28Speaker 1: I think is one way to describe it. I haven't
- 47:32Speaker 1: had a chance to talk to you guys about this.
- 47:35Speaker 1: And I listen to your program a lot, but I
- 47:37Speaker 1: don't think I heard you getting too much into the
- 47:39Speaker 1: weeds on it, but you may have that in here.
- 47:43Speaker 1: It's just a matter of time, probably only a week
- 47:45Speaker 1: or two or whatever before we hear that the college
- 47:47Speaker 1: football playoff is definitely going to be expanded, doubled inside.
- 47:51Speaker 2: They got a handshake deal, right?
- 47:53Speaker 3: They got a handshake deal. With ESPN.
- 47:56Speaker 2: That's the goofiest thing I think I've heard this season.
- 47:59Speaker 3: The handshake deal?
- 48:00Speaker 2: We got a handshake deal on paper.
- 48:03Speaker 3: Promises were made, gifts exchanged.
- 48:05Speaker 2: You can't put a handshake on paper. If you put
- 48:08Speaker 2: it on paper, then that means that it's real.
- 48:10Speaker 3: It's a contract. You got to turn it over to
- 48:12Speaker 3: the lawyers, right?
- 48:13Speaker 2: Oh, my God. These guys.
- 48:15Speaker 5: So the concept itself, though, what do you think? I
- 48:17Speaker 5: think it's too much. I'm not a big fan of it.
- 48:21Speaker 5: I think 14, what is it? 12 is just fine.
- 48:25Speaker 5: If they wanted to go to 16, I'm cool with it.
- 48:28Speaker 5: But if you've got to go to 24, it's just
- 48:30Speaker 5: letting everybody into the playoffs. We saw what happened when
- 48:34Speaker 5: they let some of the group of five teams in there,
- 48:36Speaker 5: like a James Madison that got run through.
- 48:38Speaker 3: And other teams got run through. Tulane. Tulane is a
- 48:40Speaker 3: perfect example of that.
- 48:42Speaker 5: And so you start to look at it and you say, okay,
- 48:45Speaker 5: how can we get this to where it's going to
- 48:47Speaker 5: be competitive?
- 48:48Speaker 3: You look at Big Ten. Yeah, the Big Ten, the
- 48:51Speaker 3: Big 12.
- 48:52Speaker 5: Now the Pac-12, where our guy Cam Parker resides from
- 48:55Speaker 5: time to time every Saturday.
- 48:57Speaker 3: And then, of course, the SEC. Those are the key
- 48:59Speaker 3: big dogs.
- 49:00Speaker 5: But the ACC is trying to find a way to
- 49:02Speaker 5: get in there as well. So to me, I think
- 49:06Speaker 5: 24 is a little too much, but we know what's
- 49:09Speaker 5: behind that. When you put 24 in, it's more money,
- 49:12Speaker 5: more revenue, and more TV for those networks.
- 49:16Speaker 2: The only thing that I like about 24, and I'm
- 49:19Speaker 2: going to say that, I like about 24, is because
- 49:24Speaker 2: the championship games will go away and it will become
- 49:27Speaker 2: like a bowl game for something that really matters. Because
- 49:32Speaker 2: there's so many times now that it's elementary. Georgia and
- 49:38Speaker 2: Alabama are... name a team in the SEC, they're in
- 49:42Speaker 2: the championship game and it don't matter because you win
- 49:48Speaker 2: or lose and what's the consequence? You're still both going
- 49:50Speaker 2: to the playoffs. Right.
- 49:52Speaker 1: Here's the issues that the way I understand it, and
- 49:57Speaker 1: I did a deep dive into a lot of this.
- 50:00Speaker 3: Of course you did. Yeah, yeah.
- 50:02Speaker 1: I'm going to nerd out on some things. Come on, man.
- 50:04Speaker 2: Give it up.
- 50:05Speaker 1: Well, here's the issue. First of all, I'm with you, Harge.
- 50:10Speaker 1: I thought the ideal size was 16. Now, I've been
- 50:16Speaker 1: saying that for over 10 years. I've been banging my
- 50:20Speaker 1: fist on the table saying college football.
- 50:22Speaker 3: Needs a playoff.
- 50:22Speaker 2: How'd they work out for you?
- 50:24Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah. To no avail, right? To no avail.
- 50:28Speaker 1: So, my whole thing was, if you're going to have
- 50:31Speaker 1: a college football playoff, 16 seemed to be the right number. Now,
- 50:36Speaker 1: here's the way I looked at it. I looked at it.
- 50:39Speaker 1: and I'm not always built this way, you just ask
- 50:41Speaker 1: my wife, but I was looking at it from a
- 50:44Speaker 1: very egalitarian standpoint, meaning like the NCAA basketball tournament, because
- 50:48Speaker 1: we've seen how magical the NCAA basketball tournament was. So
- 50:51Speaker 1: the way that I used to look at it was
- 50:55Speaker 1: take 16 teams, give every Division I FBS conference champion
- 51:02Speaker 1: a berth in it and five at-large.
- 51:05Speaker 3: There you would have your 16.
- 51:07Speaker 1: And I know people go, wait, you're going to let
- 51:10Speaker 1: Sunbelt champion in?
- 51:11Speaker 3: You're going to let the Mac champion in? Yes, I am.
- 51:14Speaker 1: And instead of having buys, make people earn it through
- 51:16Speaker 1: a 16. Well, that quickly got moved down the road.
- 51:20Speaker 1: This became all about money. And it really and truly,
- 51:23Speaker 1: even less about the money, became about representation in it
- 51:29Speaker 1: for the middle part of the Power 4 conferences. the
- 51:33Speaker 1: SEC to be able to land an LSU or an
- 51:37Speaker 1: Ole Miss or a Texas, a middle of the pack
- 51:40Speaker 1: group in there, along with a Georgia and an Alabama. Oh,
- 51:43Speaker 1: by the way, does anybody notice that Kentucky is tied
- 51:46Speaker 1: for first place in conference standings?
- 51:48Speaker 3: So there's that.
- 51:49Speaker 1: And then in the Big Ten, this thing is tailor-made
- 51:54Speaker 1: for Northwestern. It's tailor-made for Wisconsin. We know Ohio State
- 52:01Speaker 1: and We'll see about Michigan. In Indiana, we know about
- 52:05Speaker 1: that type of a thing. But this thing seems tailor-made
- 52:08Speaker 1: for those teams. So I get that. I understand that.
- 52:11Speaker 1: I read a piece this morning on The Athletic, and
- 52:15Speaker 1: it was called How to Save the 2014 Playoff. And
- 52:20Speaker 1: the guy who wrote it basically said exactly what I
- 52:24Speaker 1: said 12 years ago. Let all the Division I FBS
- 52:27Speaker 1: schools in, but in a 2014 playoff, that way so
- 52:32Speaker 1: you would have all the division one conference champions which
- 52:35Speaker 1: would be 11 and then you'd have 13 at-large birds
- 52:39Speaker 1: and for folks to say well who wants to see
- 52:41Speaker 1: Tulane get blown out by Ole Miss again and his
- 52:44Speaker 1: counter was are you that fired up about seeing an
- 52:47Speaker 1: eight and four Minnesota against an eight and four LSU
- 52:51Speaker 1: would it would it does it does it matter that
- 52:54Speaker 1: much to you to see that when the cream is
- 52:56Speaker 1: pretty much going to rise to the top.
- 52:58Speaker 2: If you had it like this 16, they're in the
- 53:03Speaker 2: bowl series playoff. Right. The next 16 are in the
- 53:07Speaker 2: NCAA college football championship.
- 53:11Speaker 3: Okay.
- 53:12Speaker 2: It's kind of like the NIT.
- 53:13Speaker 3: Yeah, I see what you're saying.
- 53:15Speaker 2: And then now you can have the bowl system and
- 53:20Speaker 2: then you have the NCAA championship series that would be
- 53:25Speaker 2: the next 16 teams. And you can have those eight
- 53:27Speaker 2: and four teams. And if you just happen to be
- 53:31Speaker 2: a blue blood and you get four losses hung on you,
- 53:35Speaker 2: you still get to go and represent and do something that's,
- 53:41Speaker 2: you don't want to finish the rest of the year
- 53:44Speaker 2: not in the top 25.
- 53:45Speaker 3: Right.
- 53:46Speaker 1: Well, here's the other two issues that come up. One,
- 53:50Speaker 1: obviously the financial, the 16 team model, it was said
- 53:53Speaker 1: right from the start, will not work. if you get
- 53:57Speaker 1: rid of the conference championship games. The Power Four leagues,
- 54:01Speaker 1: especially the SEC, were saying, we've got to make sure
- 54:05Speaker 1: if we're giving up the conference championship that the revenue
- 54:08Speaker 1: stream will be replaced. They said you can't do that
- 54:11Speaker 1: with a 16-team playoff.
- 54:12Speaker 3: You've got to have 24.
- 54:14Speaker 1: Because of on-campus games that generate the revenue. Now, I
- 54:19Speaker 1: think we're all in agreement that if you're doing a
- 54:22Speaker 1: college football playoff, You want as many on-campus games as
- 54:25Speaker 1: you can have. When Clemson was here a couple years ago,
- 54:27Speaker 1: it was fabulous.
- 54:28Speaker 3: And they've talked about the other players. I mean, listen.
- 54:31Speaker 1: Texas A & M, the offense went south against a
- 54:34Speaker 1: good Miami defense, and Miami beat them last year in
- 54:37Speaker 1: College Station. I can still see Michael Irvin over on
- 54:40Speaker 1: the side doing his... Whooping the garbage can. He's doing
- 54:43Speaker 1: that belt thing. Yeah, so he was doing that. But
- 54:46Speaker 1: the atmosphere, they said, was incredible. The atmosphere was incredible
- 54:49Speaker 1: in Indiana.
- 54:51Speaker 3: So.
- 54:52Speaker 1: I think everybody's pretty much in agreement that the on-campus
- 54:56Speaker 1: games and the top eight seeds will not only get
- 55:00Speaker 1: a first round by, but they'll get to play a
- 55:03Speaker 1: conference champion. I mean, you know, they'll get to play
- 55:05Speaker 1: a playoff game on their campus. Then you get your
- 55:08Speaker 1: winners out of that. Then you move it into your bowls. Uh,
- 55:11Speaker 1: cotton bowl is a quarterfinal and, uh, you know, roses
- 55:14Speaker 1: a quarterfinal or whatever.
- 55:15Speaker 3: And you do those the rest of the way.
- 55:18Speaker 1: Um, I don't know that it's a perfect thing, but
- 55:20Speaker 1: I don't agree with those who say it's going to
- 55:22Speaker 1: destroy the regular season. They said the same thing about
- 55:25Speaker 1: Major League Baseball and what has happened. The wild cards
- 55:27Speaker 1: have really made it exciting to watch. So I don't
- 55:31Speaker 1: buy that, that it's going to render the regular season pointless.
- 55:37Speaker 3: And meaningless. I don't see that happening.
- 55:39Speaker 2: That's going to come from the people that their team suck,
- 55:43Speaker 2: and they're going to whine and complain because their team
- 55:46Speaker 2: is not– Up in where it matters.
- 55:49Speaker 1: Right.
- 55:50Speaker 3: So you know this fan base well in this town.
- 55:54Speaker 2: I think I know these ones.
- 55:55Speaker 3: All right. We need a break.
- 55:56Speaker 1: We haven't talked about baseball yet, but we've got two
- 55:59Speaker 1: teams ready for the World Series, and we are going
- 56:01Speaker 1: to get to that. We're at Boulevard Social here on
- 56:05Speaker 1: North Lamar, 6215 North Lamar. Pick your landmark, whether you
- 56:10Speaker 1: remember the driver's license bureau, the Whataburger nearby, or Style Switch,
- 56:14Speaker 1: or whatever. As Mark Henry was saying, that place that
- 56:17Speaker 1: had that yellow shade to it.
- 56:19Speaker 3: You know, whatever.
- 56:20Speaker 1: Whatever it might be.
- 56:22Speaker 2: Or the DPS.
- 56:23Speaker 3: Yeah, that's right. Whatever it is.
- 56:25Speaker 1: Come on out here. We're here until 5. But they
- 56:27Speaker 1: have great happy hour specials up until 7 o'clock tonight.
- 56:32Speaker 3: Great place.
- 56:33Speaker 1: And be sure to get your name in the registration box.
- 56:35Speaker 3: Come on out. Put it in here.
- 56:37Speaker 1: Because could win a pair of tickets to Saturday's game
- 56:39Speaker 1: against Ole Miss. could win a pair of tickets as
- 56:42Speaker 1: well to see John Party as well. So come on out.
- 56:45Speaker 1: Take advantage of that. We're happy to be here and
- 56:47Speaker 1: hope to see you. Come on out here to Boulevard Social,
- 56:49Speaker 1: North Lamar, on Sports Radio AM 13 under the zone
- 56:51Speaker 1: and the IR Radio app.
- 56:53Speaker 2: The 0-2 pitch.
- 56:54Speaker 3: Lined into the gap and left center.
- 56:57Speaker 2: Turio back.
- 56:58Speaker 3: He makes the catch.
- 56:59Speaker 1: The Brewers win the pennant.
- 57:02Speaker 3: Oh, my God. The Brewers win the pennant. The World
- 57:10Speaker 3: Series will.
- 57:11Speaker 6: Go through Wisconsin.
- 57:15Speaker 4: The Brewers have swept the Los Angeles Dodgers. And they
- 57:21Speaker 4: will play for a World Series championship starting at American
- 57:25Speaker 4: Family Field next week.
- 57:28Speaker 1: No balls, two strikes.
- 57:31Speaker 6: Baker pitches, popped him up, fouled third base side, Hicks
- 57:35Speaker 6: sprinting over towards the dugout, makes the catch.
- 57:38Speaker 2: Over near the Cleveland dugout.
- 57:40Speaker 6: And for the third time in franchise history, the Tampa
- 57:43Speaker 6: Bay Rays are headed to the World Series. The Rays
- 57:49Speaker 6: stream out of the dugout and party like it's 2008
- 57:53Speaker 6: all over again for the American League champions.
- 57:56Speaker 2: And here in St. Petersburg, the party is on.
- 58:00Speaker 3: And we're back to the Craig Way Show. Have a
- 58:03Speaker 3: message for Craig? Share it by using the Talk Back
- 58:06Speaker 3: feature on the iHeartRadio app. No big shocks.
- 58:12Speaker 1: There is the top two seeds in the number one
- 58:16Speaker 1: seed in the National League and the number one seed
- 58:19Speaker 1: in the American League. Each won their respective league championships.
- 58:23Speaker 1: But what we are going to have for the first
- 58:25Speaker 1: time is two teams who have never won a World
- 58:30Speaker 1: Series face-off for the first time since Mike Hardball Harge
- 58:36Speaker 1: was playing baseball. 1980, when our good friend and colleague
- 58:40Speaker 1: Keith Moreland was playing for the Philadelphia Phillies who got
- 58:43Speaker 1: in the World Series against the Kansas City Royals. You
- 58:45Speaker 1: heard Jeff Levering's call, the Milwaukee Brewers winning the National League.
- 58:49Speaker 1: And then last night, Andy Freed on the Rays Radio Network,
- 58:52Speaker 1: Tampa Bay winning. And so we know this.
- 58:57Speaker 3: We're going to have a.
- 58:57Speaker 1: First-time world champion for the first time in 46 years.
- 59:01Speaker 5: And this goes against everything the analytics junkies have been
- 59:06Speaker 5: up against. So you talk about power. You talk about speed.
- 59:10Speaker 5: you talk about 100-mile-an-hour throws. Yeah, we'll still have some
- 59:13Speaker 5: of that. But both of these teams are butt-em-over, get-em-over guys,
- 59:18Speaker 5: drive-in runs, not trying to play for the big inning,
- 59:21Speaker 5: but trying to win every inning. In the great words
- 59:24Speaker 5: of Augie Garrido, try to win every inning. And that's
- 59:27Speaker 5: what these teams try to do. I'm excited for it
- 59:30Speaker 5: because this is what the purity of baseball. Craig, you
- 59:34Speaker 5: and I have done baseball games together. Cam, you and
- 59:36Speaker 5: I have done baseball games together. The one thing that
- 59:39Speaker 5: I always talk about is situational baseball. These guys, both teams,
- 59:44Speaker 5: play situational baseball to the top. And I believe, if
- 59:47Speaker 5: I'm not mistaken, you can correct me, isn't this the
- 59:50Speaker 5: first team that both number one teams in each division
- 59:54Speaker 5: are playing together?
- 59:56Speaker 3: For the World Series championship?
- 59:57Speaker 1: That's correct, which tells you how tough it is going
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: through all of this. But, Cam, you've got to be
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: impressed by the fact that these two teams play the
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: game as well as they do. It's funny, the way
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: that Milwaukee can swing the bats, not necessarily hit home runs,
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: although they out-homed with the Dodgers in the NLCS, but
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: moving runners over and getting in, the way they can
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: wear down even a starting rotation like what Los Angeles did,
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: had that no starter went uh even finished six full
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: innings there was that uh certainly milwaukee was like that
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: and then tampa bay is kind of viewed as being
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: uh i know this sounds like a beer but milwaukee
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: light uh kind of like that the way they do
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: it and they both were very impressive in how they've
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: advanced the world series.
- 1:00:44Speaker 3: To me it felt like the the rays have been
- 1:00:47Speaker 3: been really close to making that leap they just haven't
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: been able to get it done in the postseason and
- 1:00:51Speaker 3: it was always a question of well you know they
- 1:00:53Speaker 3: don't have the firepower of the yankees or you know
- 1:00:56Speaker 3: at times the astros did it just this operation isn't
- 1:00:59Speaker 3: going to work and so for them i think all
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: in all guys this is great for baseball i know
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: i'm sure fox and networks would love to have the
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: yankees and dodgers the numbers that would do but in
- 1:01:09Speaker 3: terms of how the game is played in the amount
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: of time that these front offices have worked on analytics
- 1:01:16Speaker 3: and what they've done to build these teams instead of
- 1:01:18Speaker 3: just throwing money at players, how they have developed and
- 1:01:21Speaker 3: they have a process and they follow through with that.
- 1:01:24Speaker 3: I think it's great for baseball. I think this will
- 1:01:25Speaker 3: be a fantastic World Series. These are two teams that
- 1:01:28Speaker 3: I think if you're a baseball purist or traditionalist, that
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: you're going to love this matchup here. For you, Craig,
- 1:01:34Speaker 3: and we haven't talked about it, I mean, how are
- 1:01:36Speaker 3: you feeling coming off an upsetting loss in the NLCS
- 1:01:39Speaker 3: for the Dodgers?
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: Well, and for folks who don't know, yeah, I am
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: a Dodger fan. But I do agree with a lot
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: of what I said. I think John Smoltz talked about it.
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: I think some of the ESPN analysts talked about it.
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: They just looked out of gas. They just looked worn
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: down the pressure and responsibility of trying to three-peat. I
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: saw it throughout the course of the season. If somebody
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: wants to know how much of a Dodger fan is,
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: I always say this is a conservative estimate. that out
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: of 162 games, I think I watched 110 of them
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: at home because of the.
- 1:02:10Speaker 3: Package and all that other kind of stuff.
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: And they play a lot of games late at night,
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: so it's pretty easy to do that. But I could
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: see it throughout the course of the year, how it
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: was wearing on them. And then the injuries, and Mookie
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: Betts was out, and Will Smith was out for a
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: long time. I don't think he ever recovered and came back,
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: and I don't think Shohei Ohtani.
- 1:02:25Speaker 3: Did as well.
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: Now, he says he'll pitch next year, and we'll see
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: how that all goes. But having said all that... I'm
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: not saying they lost because they were worn down. Milwaukee
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: was the best team all season long, and they deserved it,
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: and they earned it, and they're looking at things. They're
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: the favorites of this, but I will say this. This
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: Tampa Bay team is pretty scrappy, and they play the
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: game in a similar way that Milwaukee does. they have
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: a legitimate superstar junior, Kevin Aaron.
- 1:02:58Speaker 5: Yeah, and to your point, Craig, to what you were
- 1:03:01Speaker 5: saying about the Dodgers, it is hard to three-peat in
- 1:03:03Speaker 5: anything because what people truly don't understand is the wear
- 1:03:07Speaker 5: and tear you have to go through because you're playing
- 1:03:09Speaker 5: so long, and then you're right back into spring training.
- 1:03:12Speaker 3: You're trying to get guys back. You dealt with the injuries.
- 1:03:15Speaker 5: Guys are still trying to figure things out, and you
- 1:03:18Speaker 5: know as well as I do, you've been around the
- 1:03:19Speaker 5: game of baseball.
- 1:03:20Speaker 3: I played it for 13 seasons.
- 1:03:23Speaker 5: It wears on you the grind of every single day
- 1:03:27Speaker 5: of doing that and the preparation that you have to
- 1:03:30Speaker 5: go through. So it just looked like they were tired.
- 1:03:34Speaker 5: But to your point, no excuse. The Milwaukee Brewers best
- 1:03:37Speaker 5: record in baseball. You looked at what happened with the
- 1:03:40Speaker 5: Tampa Bay Rays. This is an organization that has been close,
- 1:03:44Speaker 5: as Cam mentioned.
- 1:03:45Speaker 3: They have been very close.
- 1:03:47Speaker 5: But there was just something about this series that you
- 1:03:49Speaker 5: could tell they were not going to lose this series
- 1:03:53Speaker 5: because every at-bat was a quality at-bat, and they put
- 1:03:57Speaker 5: pressure on every pitch that was being thrown by the Guardians.
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: Our MLB insider, Gene Watson, is going to join us
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: on Thursday to preview and break down the World Series,
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: but let me get your thoughts on this. Who wins
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: this series, Cam?
- 1:04:09Speaker 3: Give me the Brewers in six. I like Milwaukee. I
- 1:04:12Speaker 3: think they're the complete package, and being able to take
- 1:04:16Speaker 3: down the Dodgers, even when they played the Rangers at
- 1:04:18Speaker 3: the end of September, kind of Rangers were still somehow
- 1:04:22Speaker 3: in the hunt for the AL West.
- 1:04:24Speaker 5: They're like the NFC East. Everybody's still in it.
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: That's right. A pivotal series against Milwaukee with, you know,
- 1:04:30Speaker 3: dealing with the Astros in Milwaukee just took the Rangers
- 1:04:33Speaker 3: to the woodshed. And you could see, okay, here's a
- 1:04:36Speaker 3: team that actually is contending for a World Series. And
- 1:04:38Speaker 3: then here is a pretender. in the Rangers and what
- 1:04:41Speaker 3: they've been able to do this season. I think Milwaukee
- 1:04:44Speaker 3: gets it done in six.
- 1:04:45Speaker 5: I think Milwaukee is the better team, but there's just
- 1:04:47Speaker 5: something about the Tampa Bay Rays that I can't let my,
- 1:04:50Speaker 5: my guy, Eric Henry of horns, two, four, seven, go
- 1:04:53Speaker 5: down by himself. So I'm a ride with them. I'm
- 1:04:55Speaker 5: a ride with Tampa. I just think that this is
- 1:04:58Speaker 5: a team that is of destiny. We could say the
- 1:05:01Speaker 5: exact same thing for the brew crew, but I hope,
- 1:05:04Speaker 5: I hope as a baseball fan, I hope we get
- 1:05:06Speaker 5: seven games out of this.
- 1:05:07Speaker 3: Me too.
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: And, and, uh, Each team has proven in the postseason
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: they can win on the road. So even though Milwaukee
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: has home field advantage, both teams have proven they win.
- 1:05:19Speaker 3: I think our wish will come true. I think it
- 1:05:21Speaker 3: will go seven.
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: I will go with the Brewers to win it, but
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: I think it will go seven games.
- 1:05:27Speaker 3: If that happens, Craig, I want David Hamilton to get MVP.
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: How about that? And even as a Dodger fan, I
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: had a big smile on my face. every time Deham
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: was coming through the home run, stolen bases.
- 1:05:39Speaker 3: It's great to see.
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: And it was a shame because we knew he broke
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: his ankle in the scooter accident that we didn't get
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: to see him for three full seasons because of that.
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: He got hurt, missed most of another season, and it
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: just wasn't quite the same in the last.
- 1:05:51Speaker 3: Yeah, because he's electric.
- 1:05:52Speaker 5: And speed was one thing that we all knew when
- 1:05:54Speaker 5: he came out of high school. That was going to
- 1:05:57Speaker 5: be his calling card. He ended up playing a great
- 1:06:00Speaker 5: shortstop for the time being. And then, of course, he
- 1:06:02Speaker 5: gets drafted by the Brewers, goes to the Red Sox,
- 1:06:05Speaker 5: and somehow gets back to the Brewers. And now he
- 1:06:08Speaker 5: gets the chance to play on the biggest stage in
- 1:06:11Speaker 5: Major League Baseball.
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: All right. When we come back, I want to continue
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: the discussion. I want to ask you about this, about
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: what Cameron made a reference to it, about the possibility
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: that we might not have. a baseball season or a
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: truncated one next year. We'll get to that. We'll talk
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: about that. And we're going to get back to talking
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: to football as well. Like to talk to you as well.
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: If you want to come on out and say hi,
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: several have done that. We're happy to, to visit with you.
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: We're here at Boulevard social and, uh, you know, we're
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: going to be here, uh, the show up till five o'clock, uh,
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: Lynn and I are going to stick around and, uh,
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: Have some to eat afterwards, but be sure if you're
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: coming out, put your name in the registration box. Give
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: yourself a shot to win a pair of tickets to
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: Texas Ole Miss or to see John Pardee in concert.
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: We'll continue 6215 North Lamar Boulevard here at Boulevard Social
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: on Sports Radio AM 13 under the zone at the
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: iHeartRadio app. Here on a Texan Tuesday, coming your way
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: from Boulevard Social, 6215 North Lamar. We're here up until
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: 5 o'clock. Come on out and sample some of the
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: great food. Mark Henry was just trying out on the wings.
- 1:07:19Speaker 3: Oh, man. They're good.
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: They smoke them before they fry them. Wow. I mean,
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: I could taste the whole procedure. Yeah. Like, it was,
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: they're good. You're a wing connoisseur, so you would know wings. Man,
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: I'm telling you, lemon pepper, baby. I'm like Trick Williams
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: from WWE. My lemon pepper steppers.
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: Well, and of course, the return thing there. From the
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: iconic Willie Nelson. We always hear from him in the
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: 3 o'clock hour on Tuesdays. A man who could virtually
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: sing just about anything.
- 1:07:50Speaker 3: Just about anything. I think he could.
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: But can he do biggie lyrics?
- 1:07:54Speaker 3: I think he could. I think he could. I did.
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: You did a good job, too, by the way. You know,
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: I sent a copy to Jake. Did he ever play
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: it for you?
- 1:08:03Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah. I was back in the day.
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: I'll try to get it back on track here. We
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: were talking about the World Series coming up between Tampa
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: Bay and Milwaukee. It is the popular shared opinion that
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: we might not have a World Series next year or
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: that we might not have Major League Baseball next year
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: because of what is on the horizon, perhaps the possibility
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: of a work stoppage. So we could definitely see that,
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: perhaps a work stoppage on that. you were part of
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: the work stoppage back in 94 as well and and
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: it did it did some some i will say this
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: as a guy was working in sports broadcasting back then
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: as well it did some irreparable damage to the game
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: there were people who swore off the game and said
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: i'll never come back and haven't come back now the
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: home run chase of 98 which we then later found
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: out was steroid but it did bring some excitement. But
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: it's taken a long time for baseball to build it
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: back up again. And if we see this, it could
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: wind up being disaster.
- 1:09:12Speaker 3: I think, again.
- 1:09:13Speaker 5: Well, during that time, we found out the reason why, too.
- 1:09:16Speaker 5: And that year, when I was part of it, It
- 1:09:19Speaker 5: ended up making it where all these guys can make money.
- 1:09:22Speaker 3: It's the truth of it all.
- 1:09:23Speaker 5: Sometimes you've got to sacrifice for the better of others,
- 1:09:26Speaker 5: and that is exactly what happened in the 94 draft.
- 1:09:30Speaker 5: The bad part about it is when we went on strike,
- 1:09:34Speaker 5: my Montreal Expos were going to win the NL East.
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: Weren't they up by eight?
- 1:09:39Speaker 5: Yes, over the Atlanta Braves, and it was going to
- 1:09:41Speaker 5: put us in a position to possibly play Well, definitely
- 1:09:45Speaker 5: in the playoffs, but we were favored to be the
- 1:09:47Speaker 5: World Series champion. And it messed up my September call-up
- 1:09:51Speaker 5: before that time as well.
- 1:09:53Speaker 3: So there was a lot that happened.
- 1:09:55Speaker 5: But if you look back at it and what has
- 1:09:57Speaker 5: happened since then, that's why these guys have these exorbitant contracts.
- 1:10:01Speaker 5: This is why you sacrifice for the betterment of others. But, yes,
- 1:10:05Speaker 5: to your point, there was a lot of guys that
- 1:10:07Speaker 5: were looked at different. There was guys that stepped over
- 1:10:10Speaker 5: the line. There were changes that were happening. Some guys
- 1:10:14Speaker 5: that did do that, that ended up getting in the
- 1:10:16Speaker 5: major leagues, they were never part of the union. There
- 1:10:18Speaker 5: were some things that have happened throughout there. So, yeah,
- 1:10:22Speaker 5: work stoppage, especially right now with the way that this
- 1:10:25Speaker 5: game has gained its popularity back and people are talking
- 1:10:28Speaker 5: about these types of things, I just think it'll be a...
- 1:10:32Speaker 5: Monumental mistake for them to not get this deal done.
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: Tell people a little bit who was on that 94 Expos.
- 1:10:40Speaker 3: He's pretty impressive.
- 1:10:41Speaker 5: Yeah, our starting pitcher was Pedro Martinez. Our closer was
- 1:10:46Speaker 5: John Wetland. We had Lee Stevens at first base, Larry
- 1:10:50Speaker 5: Walker in right field, Marquise Grissom, Delano DeShields. Will Cordero,
- 1:10:56Speaker 5: Moises Alou was in left.
- 1:10:58Speaker 3: Kenny Hill was one of the pitchers.
- 1:11:01Speaker 5: Our catcher was Fletcher and Joe Sadal, guys that are
- 1:11:05Speaker 5: doing things in Major League Baseball still to this day.
- 1:11:09Speaker 3: Felipe Alou was our manager on that team.
- 1:11:13Speaker 5: Rondell White, Cliff Floyd, guys that were my roommates for
- 1:11:16Speaker 5: a long time. And the opportunity for Montreal. And then,
- 1:11:20Speaker 5: of course, Montreal ends up losing baseball.
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it is a long way to killing
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: off the franchise in Montreal and then ultimately having to move.
- 1:11:28Speaker 3: It to D.C.
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: Is there anybody that understands what the severity of this
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: decision that they're about to make and the consequences that
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: can take hold over the next five and ten years?
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: It could ruin baseball and take it back down to
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: where it was before.
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: That's where people get into digging in their heels on
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: both sides.
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:11:49Speaker 5: That's where the money continues to move. The GMs and
- 1:11:53Speaker 5: the owners are still spending money. They're making money throughout
- 1:11:56Speaker 5: this whole deal. I think the biggest thing, and Craig,
- 1:11:58Speaker 5: you know this, and I'm sure Gino won't ever get
- 1:12:01Speaker 5: in the weeds on this part of it, is those
- 1:12:03Speaker 5: small market teams not spending the money that they're making
- 1:12:06Speaker 5: to help build it up. Because everybody, if you're spending
- 1:12:10Speaker 5: money in a small market, that means everybody's spending money
- 1:12:13Speaker 5: and making money. That's been the biggest thing. And people
- 1:12:16Speaker 5: get mad at the Dodgers. People get mad at the Yankees.
- 1:12:20Speaker 5: Red Sox. Yeah, guys that are spending money because they're
- 1:12:24Speaker 5: investing in wanting to win. The other teams are just like,
- 1:12:28Speaker 5: let's play our season. We know we don't have a chance.
- 1:12:30Speaker 5: That's why it's frustrating for a guy like Paul Skeens.
- 1:12:34Speaker 5: Top player in the game, top pitcher in the game,
- 1:12:36Speaker 5: but he's on that team, so we'll never see him
- 1:12:40Speaker 5: play in the postseason. Mike Trout, making a lot of money,
- 1:12:43Speaker 5: but Anaheim's not doing anything to help them out, and
- 1:12:46Speaker 5: they're paying guys to basically not play, like Rendon. Rendon
- 1:12:51Speaker 5: wins the World Series, go get the big contract, and
- 1:12:53Speaker 5: when's the last time you heard from Anthony Rendon?
- 1:12:56Speaker 3: Yep, he'd been out injured.
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: And then, in the middle of all of this, what's
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: definitely going to be brought into the discussion, and I
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: don't know, and maybe you can tell me, I don't
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: know who it hurts more or helps more, the fact
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: that you got the last three teams left standing were
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: small market teams.
- 1:13:16Speaker 3: Yes. Cleveland, Tampa Bay, Milwaukee. Yes. One of them is
- 1:13:19Speaker 3: going to win.
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: And there's going to be somebody who's going to point
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: a finger and say, look, somebody other than the Dodgers
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: or the Yankees or the Red Sox or the Braves
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: or the Mets won a world championship. So it can
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: be done.
- 1:13:31Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: Depending on what your farm system is all about.
- 1:13:33Speaker 5: And that's the main thing right there. You hit the
- 1:13:36Speaker 5: nail on the head. It's going to crush the farm systems.
- 1:13:39Speaker 5: Because they're already trying to change the draft. They're already
- 1:13:42Speaker 5: trying to change the age of the draft picks. They've
- 1:13:45Speaker 5: cut different minor league teams. As somebody who played on
- 1:13:50Speaker 5: a bunch of minor league teams, I appreciated all of them.
- 1:13:53Speaker 5: Because every city you went to, that small town loved it.
- 1:13:56Speaker 5: I mean, we've got the AAA team for the Round
- 1:13:58Speaker 5: Rock Express. But remember, they started off as a AA team.
- 1:14:01Speaker 3: That's right.
- 1:14:02Speaker 5: And they grew because they wanted to bring baseball here.
- 1:14:05Speaker 5: Now you get the affiliation with both the Houston Astros.
- 1:14:08Speaker 3: And the Texas Rangers.
- 1:14:10Speaker 5: You get to see the stars come up through the
- 1:14:12Speaker 5: organization and get a chance to see big leaguers come on,
- 1:14:16Speaker 5: rehab stars. I mean, you're tearing up the fabric of
- 1:14:20Speaker 5: minor league baseball, which I guess that's one of the
- 1:14:23Speaker 5: other steps that they're taking as well.
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: They could wind up altering the landscape of minor league
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: baseball as we know it today, the Round Rock Express
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: as we know it today.
- 1:14:35Speaker 3: We'll see.
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: We'll be back to wrap up our number two here.
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: We're at Boulevard Social 60, 215 North Lamar. Don't forget,
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: come on by, put your name in the box. You
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: might win a pair of tickets for Texas and Ole
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: Miss or also to see John Pardee.
- 1:14:51Speaker 3: So come on out.
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: We're here on the air until 5 o'clock. This is
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM 13 under the zone on the iHeartRadio app.
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: Third and final hour of the program coming your way
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: from Boulevard Social.
- 1:15:04Speaker 3: Never been here? Come on out. 6215 North Lamar.
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: So great beverages and food. Mark Henry has already sampled
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: some of the items.
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: I tried the lemon pepper wings. They're smoked wings, and
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: then they fry them, and they put that lemon pepper.
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: It's awesome. I had the disco fries. Yeah?
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: They don't do a traditional brown gravy. We're not in Canada.
- 1:15:34Speaker 2: There is Texas, so it's a white gravy with bacon
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: and chives. I mean, it's a really garlicky gravy. It's
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: pretty good, man.
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: So just to let folks know, I mean, it's a
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: little bit different. You mentioned not like Canada because Canada
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: will do that poutine thing.
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: Yeah, they have poutine on the menu too, but poutine also.
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: has the Texas white gravy rather than traditional brown gravy.
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: Harge, when you guys are out together, and I'm talking
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: about on business, but you guys may hang out together
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: other times, I don't know, but when you guys are
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: hanging out together, is Mark really the authority on tasting
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: whatever food that you have and then you do it
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: or do you both get your own stuff and then
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: he picks off of yours or how does that work?
- 1:16:35Speaker 5: I was going to say, Mark is the one that always,
- 1:16:38Speaker 5: no matter where we go, feels like it's his duty
- 1:16:41Speaker 5: to eat everybody's food. He wants, no matter what, no
- 1:16:44Speaker 5: matter where we are, he wants to eat everybody's food. Me,
- 1:16:48Speaker 5: on the other hand, I want to come in and
- 1:16:50Speaker 5: I just want to hang out and do what it
- 1:16:52Speaker 5: is that we need to do and continue to make
- 1:16:55Speaker 5: things happen Mark is not one, not two. He's like
- 1:17:00Speaker 5: LeBron in the heatles. He wants to try everything on
- 1:17:03Speaker 5: their menu.
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: Are you kind of like the dude in the movie
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: Diner where he's up to the Maryland fried chicken? Oh,
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: you know what he's done, don't you? He's eaten the
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: entire left side of the menu.
- 1:17:15Speaker 3: Pretty much.
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: Well, that's me. That's me. And, oh, I also tried
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: the queso and chips.
- 1:17:21Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:17:22Speaker 2: And really good crunchy chips. And they season the chip.
- 1:17:26Speaker 3: French fries are really good.
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: The French fries were seasoned well. So it's not salty,
- 1:17:31Speaker 2: but seasoned well. And then you get a good creamy queso.
- 1:17:35Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: But it's good food, man.
- 1:17:37Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:17:38Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:17:38Speaker 3: So all the more reason.
- 1:17:39Speaker 2: I still got about five more items to try.
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: So you make your way out here during the next hour.
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: You might witness some of that. All right. Which brings
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: me to the next point that I was going to
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: bring up. For folks who haven't listened to these two
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: in the morning, it's a lot of fun. From 6
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: to 9. I asked you, I asked both of you,
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: how much of a mental and physical adjustment had to
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: be made when you expanded your show to three hours,
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: now on the air at 6 a.m. instead of 7 a.m.?
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: How much of an adjustment did that take?
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: It was a big adjustment for me because Harge knows
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: that I like to go to bed at 10, 11 o'clock.
- 1:18:16Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: And when you get up at 4 o'clock, you can't
- 1:18:21Speaker 2: go to bed at 11. know you're not gonna be
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: fresh so um nine o'clock i'm usually winding down turn
- 1:18:29Speaker 2: the computer off you know i stopped playing my fortnight
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: and and i just go over everything that happened in
- 1:18:37Speaker 2: the sports day once more before i go to sleep
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: yeah and then i'll knock out and i'll be ready.
- 1:18:44Speaker 5: How about you it wasn't it wasn't an adjustment for
- 1:18:46Speaker 5: me i was always getting up early um remember i'd
- 1:18:49Speaker 5: be i was over at the other spot i was
- 1:18:53Speaker 5: doing a morning show right here on sports radio am
- 1:18:55Speaker 5: 1300 the zone with chip brown so i was already
- 1:18:59Speaker 5: doing the early morning show 6 to 9 a.m.
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: Yeah yeah so what so wasn't a problem no it
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: wasn't a problem at all um Do you guys ever
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: have a problem with each other on the air?
- 1:19:09Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:19:10Speaker 3: Okay. 100%. Because he likes to argue.
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: Rather than, like, I look at things, like, from an
- 1:19:20Speaker 2: analytical standpoint. Like, reason it is good or bad.
- 1:19:24Speaker 3: Uh-huh.
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: Harge will sometimes, I feel like, choose the opposite reaction.
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: Just to be contrary to you?
- 1:19:32Speaker 2: Just to be contrary. And I won't do that.
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:19:36Speaker 2: Unless he tells him, hey, man, we can't agree on everything.
- 1:19:40Speaker 2: Why don't you take the negative and then I'll take
- 1:19:44Speaker 2: the positive.
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: So it's like high school cross-ex debate. I'll take the
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: affirmative or whatever.
- 1:19:48Speaker 5: And the other part of it is Mark thinks he's
- 1:19:52Speaker 5: right all the time. I'm not. I do realize I'm not.
- 1:19:58Speaker 3: But I think I do.
- 1:19:59Speaker 5: And then sometimes you got to. You got to try
- 1:20:02Speaker 5: to show him the error of his ways. And he
- 1:20:04Speaker 5: always said, I'm not trying to argue with you. I'm like,
- 1:20:06Speaker 5: I'm not arguing with you. I'm debating what you are
- 1:20:09Speaker 5: stating to see how we can get to a resolution.
- 1:20:14Speaker 3: Is that the goal, to get to the resolution?
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: Absolutely. Or does it get to a point where you're
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: going to stand on opposite sides.
- 1:20:20Speaker 2: Of the fence?
- 1:20:21Speaker 3: We stood in the corners.
- 1:20:23Speaker 2: We get to the point where we realize that it's opinions.
- 1:20:29Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: At this point, if it's opinion and there's no fact
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: involved or no result.
- 1:20:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: That we can look at and say that is the
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: bona fide answer.
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: By the way, be careful if you're going on non-fact
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: based opinion, then you're a Longhorn football fan.
- 1:20:46Speaker 3: So you just need to understand. I'm just saying.
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: But we go through that all the time and there's
- 1:20:53Speaker 2: no ill will. But when we're both on the same page,
- 1:20:59Speaker 2: it is so sweet.
- 1:21:01Speaker 3: That's what I'm talking about.
- 1:21:02Speaker 2: It's awesome.
- 1:21:03Speaker 3: That's what I'm talking about.
- 1:21:03Speaker 2: We become best friends at least once a week.
- 1:21:07Speaker 5: And that is forced friendship. Because he comes over and
- 1:21:10Speaker 5: pounds me on the back.
- 1:21:11Speaker 7: Which you don't like. Yeah, no, don't like that. But
- 1:21:15Speaker 7: you don't like it either. I don't like being hit
- 1:21:17Speaker 7: or struck. Now, if you walked up and you know me,
- 1:21:20Speaker 7: you'd be like, hey, Mark, how you doing?
- 1:21:22Speaker 3: You're okay with that.
- 1:21:22Speaker 2: I'm good with it. But I have people that I meet,
- 1:21:26Speaker 2: and by the way, Aaron came in dry. He heard
- 1:21:29Speaker 2: us on the air. He just stopped in. I have
- 1:21:32Speaker 2: people that are passers. Like, we pass them by each other,
- 1:21:37Speaker 2: and they'll slap me on my back, and the police
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: have to be called.
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:21:42Speaker 2: Because somebody's about to get their asses. Oh, that's just
- 1:21:45Speaker 2: my music. It ain't just my music.
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: It's the truth. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's true. Aaron, by
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: the way, thank you for coming. We appreciate it. Thank
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: you to all of you. All of y'all.
- 1:21:55Speaker 3: Appreciate y'all.
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: So I guess what I'm getting at here is that
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: you two do like each other.
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, yeah. We've been knowing each other. Sean Adams
- 1:22:08Speaker 2: is the one that brought us together.
- 1:22:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:22:12Speaker 2: Said that, hey, man, y'all call in to the show.
- 1:22:15Speaker 2: Y'all are wealth of knowledge in y'all sports. Diversify. Start
- 1:22:19Speaker 2: watching hockey. Start watching baseball. Start watching golf, marbles, tiddlywinks,
- 1:22:24Speaker 2: whatever it is. And be able to analyze it. And
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: I never thought about that until Sean said that to me.
- 1:22:31Speaker 2: And I became a fan of Sean and Chip, and
- 1:22:35Speaker 2: then I became a fan of Harge and Chip. And,
- 1:22:38Speaker 2: you know, like, The reason that I've been in radio
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: for nine years now is because of my relationship with
- 1:22:47Speaker 2: Sean and my relationship with Chip Brown and Harge. Like, they,
- 1:22:51Speaker 2: you know, they're the ones that made me feel like
- 1:22:54Speaker 2: I can do this. And here we are on a
- 1:22:56Speaker 2: team together. What do you like best about him? Well,
- 1:23:00Speaker 2: I mean, he's a people person.
- 1:23:02Speaker 3: I feel like I'm on the dating app right now.
- 1:23:05Speaker 3: I'm just curious.
- 1:23:07Speaker 5: No he's a people person he he is genuinely he genuinely.
- 1:23:10Speaker 3: Cares i'm the guy uh about.
- 1:23:13Speaker 5: Other people and their feelings and things like that and
- 1:23:15Speaker 5: sometimes to be honest with you it gets on my
- 1:23:18Speaker 5: nerves because of the fact that i won't tell people
- 1:23:21Speaker 5: no exactly to tell people like in the middle of
- 1:23:24Speaker 5: this we're doing our thing yep the guy comes up
- 1:23:26Speaker 5: and says hey.
- 1:23:27Speaker 2: Can you sign these action figures right hard just like
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: put the brakes on wait till we get to the
- 1:23:33Speaker 2: break right yeah till we get to the break he's
- 1:23:35Speaker 2: not telling me not to do it yes he's just
- 1:23:37Speaker 2: telling me to tell the guy hey hey hold on
- 1:23:40Speaker 2: a second yeah i've been we we baseball guys right
- 1:23:44Speaker 2: reggie jackson made me hate him yeah he's he's he's
- 1:23:48Speaker 2: not a good person and i've met a hundred athletes
- 1:23:52Speaker 2: like that i will never be the guy That if
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: somebody walks up and goes, man, Mark Heron was a douche.
- 1:23:58Speaker 2: He talked to me bad. I would never do it.
- 1:24:01Speaker 3: Okay. Well, that's good.
- 1:24:03Speaker 2: So I'm going to respond to everybody that comes to me.
- 1:24:08Speaker 2: Because there's going to be a day where nobody cares
- 1:24:10Speaker 2: about the old man with the gray hair over there
- 1:24:13Speaker 2: with the cane.
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: Well, and here's the other reason I bring that up.
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: You brought up Reggie Jackson.
- 1:24:18Speaker 3: That's right. And one of the reporters when I was
- 1:24:20Speaker 3: working at the radio station, we.
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: It was amazing exchange where the highlight of it was
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: Reggie saying, you need to do a better job of
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: coming up with the question you want to ask me
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: in order for me to give you the answer that
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: you want. And then he proceeded to tell him to,
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: you know, you know, take his stuff and.
- 1:24:40Speaker 3: Put him in a special apartment.
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: And I will also tell you the other guy, the
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: other guy that's like that. And I know this is
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: just going to shock you guys is, is Barry Bonds.
- 1:24:54Speaker 2: Barry a bad person? I never met him before.
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: I will never forget standing on the field before the
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: 95 All-Star game in Arlington. And it was batting practice
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: and Homer and Derby David, all that stuff, and there's
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: a little kid that's like from me over to where
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: Aaron's sitting, and I'm hearing him, and Bonds is standing
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: like an all-deck circle from where I am to where
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: Cameron is.
- 1:25:19Speaker 3: And I hear him say, Mr. Bond's going to get
- 1:25:21Speaker 3: an autograph, Mr. Bond.
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: He turns around and says, F off, kid.
- 1:25:26Speaker 8: Oh, my God. I thought, yep, okay, that confirmed a
- 1:25:29Speaker 8: lot of what I knew about Bond. This is a
- 1:25:31Speaker 8: great topic. We've got to do this one day, like
- 1:25:34Speaker 8: all of us. Like Cam, I know he's had some interactions.
- 1:25:37Speaker 8: Big Show is the nicest guy ever, right?
- 1:25:40Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:25:41Speaker 2: He's a bad guy on TV, but one of the
- 1:25:44Speaker 2: nicest humans ever born.
- 1:25:46Speaker 3: Okay, okay.
- 1:25:47Speaker 2: And this wrestler, I'm afraid to mention his name because
- 1:25:50Speaker 2: he's real powerful.
- 1:25:51Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:25:52Speaker 2: And he was being mean. Well, he was being mean
- 1:25:54Speaker 2: to a family that wanted to take a picture with him. Right.
- 1:25:59Speaker 2: And Big Show proceeded to walk up to this guy
- 1:26:03Speaker 2: and leaned in. And I'm behind him, kind of catacornered
- 1:26:06Speaker 2: from him. And he leans in. He goes, if you
- 1:26:09Speaker 2: ever disrespect somebody like that again, I'm going to smash
- 1:26:11Speaker 2: your head against the desk. And I went.
- 1:26:15Speaker 3: Oh, man.
- 1:26:17Speaker 2: I love to see the good guy stand up for
- 1:26:20Speaker 2: the little guy.
- 1:26:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:26:22Speaker 2: That's good stuff.
- 1:26:23Speaker 3: Good stuff as well. You know what else is good stuff?
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: Announcement came down today for the class of 2027 for
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame. Now, these
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: are people, they're going to be very recognizable names, but
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: they're recognizable not only for what they did at the
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: collegiate or professional level, but what they did as Texas.
- 1:26:42Speaker 3: High school football players. Okay.
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: It's a really cool thing. And the way they do
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: it is they pick one player from each decade, starting
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: with 1969 and before, because it could be some old
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: time or something back, then the 70s, the 80s.
- 1:27:01Speaker 3: The 90s, to the 2000s and the 2010s. Okay. And
- 1:27:04Speaker 3: then there's a couple of coaches, a couple of contributors
- 1:27:06Speaker 3: as well.
- 1:27:07Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: So the class of 2027 for this, the 1969 and
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: before Joe Barnes from Reagan County High School out in
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: Big Lake.
- 1:27:17Speaker 3: That's out west Texas.
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: 70s, Doug Dawson, outstanding offensive lineman from Houston Memorial and
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: played at the University of Texas, played for the Oilers,
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: played for I think three teams in the NFL, and
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: was a great player in the 70s.
- 1:27:33Speaker 3: 80s, Richmond Webb. Oh, right, A & M. I know
- 1:27:35Speaker 3: you'll recognize him.
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: Outstanding lineman for the Aggies and then played for the
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: Miami Dolphins in his career.
- 1:27:41Speaker 3: Played with my brother. You did?
- 1:27:44Speaker 2: Yeah, he played with my brother. My brother was on
- 1:27:46Speaker 2: that wrecking crew, dude.
- 1:27:47Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:27:47Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: Then in the 90s, the guy who had to go
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: up against him, Casey Hampton.
- 1:27:52Speaker 3: Oh, my gosh. So you got another lifetime long.
- 1:27:55Speaker 2: Let's go.
- 1:27:56Speaker 3: Yeah. Big ham.
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: And he did that when he played at Galveston Ball, obviously,
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: then at Texas and All-American. And then all those years,
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: there's two rings with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 1:28:05Speaker 3: Yeah. So it's great.
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: The class of the 2000s, Chase Daniel, who was South
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: Lake Carroll's quarterback, played really well at Missouri and made
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: a career, much like Colt McCoy did, being a really capable,
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: quality backup for over a decade.
- 1:28:23Speaker 2: Hey, man, he held that clipboard with a lot of pride.
- 1:28:26Speaker 2: With a lot of pride.
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: And did it well, and now is doing it well
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: on television as an analyst on college football.
- 1:28:34Speaker 3: And then finally, the 2010s.
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: How about Baker Mayfield?
- 1:28:39Speaker 2: Come on, man. stand up represent.
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: Which what he did at lake travis and then of
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: course started off attack and went to oklahoma wins eisman
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: trophy in the nfl and by the way i saw
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: a thing he's practicing again he's probably gonna come back
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: off of injury with what he's had that they also
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: uh announced um Two coaches, John Outlaw did a great
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: job at Lufkin High among his players. Des Bryant played
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: for him at Lufkin. And Johnny Toussaint, Waco High, who
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: was Derek Johnson's coach in high school.
- 1:29:12Speaker 3: And in fact... Coached against me as well. Oh, yeah,
- 1:29:14Speaker 3: that's right. Johnny Toussaint.
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: And DJ was so grateful to him that when Derek
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: Johnson went into the Chiefs Hall of Fame back in September...
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: he flew up Johnny Tusa and his wife because he
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: wanted them there.
- 1:29:27Speaker 2: Wow, that's an awesome story right there.
- 1:29:29Speaker 5: John Tusa was, I think they named a stadium after him,
- 1:29:32Speaker 5: if I'm.
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: Not mistaken, at Waco High. At Waco High. And then
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: Dave Campbell contributed to the game. Our good friend Adam
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: Hochfelder from Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, he pretty much
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: runs all that in the video part.
- 1:29:44Speaker 3: And he is a big.
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: Part of what's going to happen with the high school
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: state championship games, and their announcement will be forthcoming here
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: probably in the next couple of weeks or so.
- 1:29:56Speaker 3: I know a lot of people have been concerned about.
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: It because of the fact that Victory Plus went out
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: of business. And who's going to televise the state championships?
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: What platform is it going to be on? I think
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: there's going to be some real good news coming down
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: on that over the.
- 1:30:13Speaker 3: Next couple of weeks. And that has a lot to
- 1:30:15Speaker 3: do with it.
- 1:30:15Speaker 2: You're teasing.
- 1:30:16Speaker 3: Well, I don't have all the details. Okay, okay.
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: But I have some of the details. So anyway, so
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: there's that. So congratulations to all those people going into
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: the Texas High.
- 1:30:26Speaker 3: School Football Hall of Fame.
- 1:30:27Speaker 2: Congrats to them.
- 1:30:28Speaker 3: Absolutely. All right, we've got more football to get to.
- 1:30:31Speaker 3: We'll do that.
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: By the way, they've had what a turnaround there in Detroit.
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: The Pistons, who were down by 22 points in the
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: first half, have come back and now are up eight
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: on the Boston Celtics down the stretch. 107-99 on the
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: first game of the first day of the new season
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: in the NBA. Welcome to the NBA, right?
- 1:30:53Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 1:30:55Speaker 3: Everybody goes on a run.
- 1:30:56Speaker 4: Yep.
- 1:30:56Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: We have more coming up. We're here at Boulevard Social.
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: Come on out. Be sure and get your name in
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: the registration box. You might win a pair of tickets
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: to the Longhorns game with Ole Miss or also to
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: the John Pardee concert. Great food. great beverages, and they've
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: got the games on the screens here. So 6215 North
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: Lamar for Boulevard Social. And we'll continue from here on
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone.
- 1:31:22Speaker 3: Oh, man.
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: All of a sudden we've gotten into this Eddie Rabbit vibe,
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: I think, in our California country on.
- 1:31:34Speaker 3: A Texan Tuesday.
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: Continuing in from Boulevard Social here at 6215 North Lamar.
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: I hope you'll come on out. By the way, it
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: has gone final. What a turnaround. Detroit was down 22
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: to Boston. Came back and beat the Celtics.
- 1:31:48Speaker 3: 121-113.
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: Well, that's it, fellas. Pistons are winning the NBA championship.
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: Good luck with that. Yeah, we'll see. But pretty impressive
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: for Detroit to turn that thing around.
- 1:32:01Speaker 2: That was a lot of fight.
- 1:32:02Speaker 3: Yeah, Boston got the full Paul George experience. I think
- 1:32:06Speaker 3: 31 points after three quarters. That was the Boston Celtics
- 1:32:09Speaker 3: record for most points in a Celtic debut and then
- 1:32:13Speaker 3: they end up blowing it in the fourth quarter so
- 1:32:16Speaker 3: quite the debut for Paul George walking off the court
- 1:32:19Speaker 3: there um in Detroit but I you know first game
- 1:32:23Speaker 3: reaction guys I think you know we kind of expected
- 1:32:27Speaker 3: this with Boston but they don't have a deep bench
- 1:32:29Speaker 3: so that that's my that's my concern for the Boston
- 1:32:32Speaker 3: Celtics this season and for Troy you know Kate Cunningham
- 1:32:36Speaker 3: had a fantastic game but Jalen Durant too who at
- 1:32:38Speaker 3: one point he weren't sure if he would be on
- 1:32:41Speaker 3: the Pistons or not. He had an impressive second half,
- 1:32:44Speaker 3: dominated the boards. He was an 8-12 from the field.
- 1:32:47Speaker 3: So this is a Detroit, you know, that's a team
- 1:32:49Speaker 3: in the East that has high expectations. You know, kind
- 1:32:52Speaker 3: of like the Houston Rockets, Mark, I think of last season.
- 1:32:55Speaker 3: I think we're expecting the Pistons and the Rockets to
- 1:32:58Speaker 3: both take bigger leaps than what we saw from a
- 1:33:01Speaker 3: year ago in terms of how they perform in the playoffs.
- 1:33:04Speaker 2: Well, that was the big thing about The Detroit Pistons
- 1:33:08Speaker 2: is the fact that Cade Cunningham was a legit scorer,
- 1:33:12Speaker 2: but they didn't have a secondary scorer. And Durant was
- 1:33:16Speaker 2: only giving them like 10 and 10, 11 and 11,
- 1:33:19Speaker 2: those kind of numbers. The rest of those guys, they
- 1:33:23Speaker 2: stepped up tonight. So let's see if they can maintain
- 1:33:26Speaker 2: that through the season.
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: What are we expecting from Spurs Thunder tonight?
- 1:33:31Speaker 3: Oh, I mean, for OKC. Prediction? Pain. It's on a
- 1:33:36Speaker 3: completely different roster, but OKC has lost some depth due
- 1:33:39Speaker 3: to the NBA and Adam Silver and the CBA and
- 1:33:43Speaker 3: this luxury cap and the aprons and stuff. Isaiah Joe
- 1:33:48Speaker 3: now with the Detroit Pistons. They trade Lou Dort to
- 1:33:51Speaker 3: the Hawks. Aaron Wiggins, the man who saved basketball in.
- 1:33:54Speaker 2: Atlanta, too.
- 1:33:56Speaker 3: Relying a lot on some younger guys you know the
- 1:33:58Speaker 3: freshmen's from are the rookies from Michigan and Iowa then
- 1:34:02Speaker 3: also um Casson Wallace who they just signed locked him
- 1:34:06Speaker 3: up to a big extension deal but I think you
- 1:34:09Speaker 3: know coming off of last season Spurs are the home
- 1:34:12Speaker 3: team I think San Antonio ends up probably winning tonight
- 1:34:15Speaker 3: but it's going to be an emotional game because these
- 1:34:18Speaker 3: two teams really do not like each other but Mark
- 1:34:20Speaker 3: I'm excited to see the leap that Dylan Harper can
- 1:34:23Speaker 3: take this season, because I felt like at times he
- 1:34:25Speaker 3: was the best player on the floor for San Antonio
- 1:34:28Speaker 3: in the finals, definitely in the Western Conference finals against OKC.
- 1:34:33Speaker 3: If he takes the leap that San Antonio expects him
- 1:34:36Speaker 3: to make, you may not even have De'Aaron Fox on
- 1:34:39Speaker 3: this team a year from now.
- 1:34:41Speaker 2: Well, they're also going with a three-guard rotation, and having
- 1:34:46Speaker 2: a three-guard rotation, him being the big guard in that case,
- 1:34:50Speaker 2: or sometimes small forward, with Castle out there. Castle grew
- 1:34:55Speaker 2: two inches in a year. So last year he was 6'6,
- 1:35:00Speaker 2: and now he's 6'8. Like, how does that happen? Like,
- 1:35:04Speaker 2: I mean, it's gross.
- 1:35:06Speaker 3: Man, that's crazy.
- 1:35:08Speaker 2: But they are big. They're athletic. They get up and
- 1:35:11Speaker 2: down the court. And they brought in Tobias Harris to
- 1:35:17Speaker 2: be kind of the brains, the central cortex of that team.
- 1:35:21Speaker 2: And I don't feel like Fox is going to be
- 1:35:24Speaker 2: needed on this team. He might be a tradable piece.
- 1:35:30Speaker 3: I'm going to jump over.
- 1:35:32Speaker 2: Well, no.
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: Before we leave the NBA, we all agreed. None of
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: us think that the Knicks are repeating as champions. So
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: who wins it?
- 1:35:41Speaker 3: Philly. So you're picking the Sixers?
- 1:35:43Speaker 2: Philly.
- 1:35:44Speaker 3: Oh.
- 1:35:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm going with the Sixers.
- 1:35:46Speaker 3: Oh, okay.
- 1:35:47Speaker 2: It's going to be the Spurs. The Spurs are going
- 1:35:49Speaker 2: to have a time to run like three championships. They're
- 1:35:53Speaker 2: going to be a really good dominant team for the
- 1:35:55Speaker 2: next four years. But Philly, this is like a destination team.
- 1:36:02Speaker 3: It's an all-in thing.
- 1:36:03Speaker 2: LeBron James is so good, and he makes everybody around
- 1:36:08Speaker 2: him better. And the people that he's playing with now
- 1:36:11Speaker 2: are better than the team that he played with last year.
- 1:36:14Speaker 2: And that team won 52 games. So how good is
- 1:36:18Speaker 2: this team going to be? They're going to win 62 games?
- 1:36:22Speaker 2: 70 games?
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: They're going to get to stand on the floor at
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: Madison Square Garden and just in about 45 minutes watch
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: the Knicks raise their championship banner before.
- 1:36:32Speaker 2: The team teams play. You know what happens after teams
- 1:36:34Speaker 2: raise their banners, right? They get dog walked. They get
- 1:36:39Speaker 2: run off the court because they've had the luxury life.
- 1:36:42Speaker 2: They've been doing Leno and... what's the Saturday Night Live
- 1:36:47Speaker 2: and all of these shows.
- 1:36:50Speaker 3: Leno hadn't been on the air.
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: In a while.
- 1:36:51Speaker 2: Yeah, it's been a long time. I don't watch nighttime television.
- 1:36:53Speaker 3: Jimmy Fallon?
- 1:36:54Speaker 2: Jimmy Fallon. Let's go with that.
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: Jimmy Kimmel?
- 1:36:58Speaker 2: The Jimmys.
- 1:36:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:36:59Speaker 2: Now they're going to have to go out there on
- 1:37:01Speaker 2: the court and face the elite basketball players in the league.
- 1:37:06Speaker 2: And I look at Jalen Brown as being that elite guy.
- 1:37:11Speaker 2: And LeBron James' job is not to go score 25,
- 1:37:15Speaker 2: 30 points. His job is to get Jalen Brown.
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: He doesn't even have to play 25 minutes a night.
- 1:37:20Speaker 2: He doesn't. Like, if you want to save his legs
- 1:37:22Speaker 2: throughout the season, you let Maxie and Brown and Edgecombe
- 1:37:29Speaker 2: run that team, and you come in in spurts, and
- 1:37:32Speaker 2: you keep the ball moving and be the brains of
- 1:37:36Speaker 2: that team because Jalen Beat has proven that he can't
- 1:37:39Speaker 2: get it done. But can you imagine LeBron James playing
- 1:37:42Speaker 2: with a dominant center?
- 1:37:44Speaker 3: It would be something else. All right. So, you know,
- 1:37:48Speaker 3: who are you picking to win it then? I think
- 1:37:50Speaker 3: OKC gets back on top of the mountain.
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: I think this is a thunder fan by the way
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: doing that last year he didn't with.
- 1:37:55Speaker 2: Your heart man.
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: No a couple years ago he did not you didn't
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: go down that road with okc and they ended up
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: winning it you weren't picking them.
- 1:38:02Speaker 3: Yeah last season with the health of the team and
- 1:38:05Speaker 3: jalen williams not being healthy i didn't like him against
- 1:38:08Speaker 3: san antonio and it turned out to be uh the
- 1:38:10Speaker 3: right pick i think with jalen williams healthy this season
- 1:38:13Speaker 3: uh i love the draft pick of ademara for michigan
- 1:38:17Speaker 3: i think he'll give OKC some depth and some bodies
- 1:38:20Speaker 3: to throw at Wemby if.
- 1:38:21Speaker 2: They face each other. If he's allowed to play.
- 1:38:23Speaker 3: He's going to play. He's going to play. I like
- 1:38:25Speaker 3: OKC to get back up there, but I think it's
- 1:38:28Speaker 3: going to come down again to San Antonio.
- 1:38:30Speaker 2: And OKC.
- 1:38:30Speaker 3: As long as Wemby and Shea can stay healthy, these
- 1:38:34Speaker 3: two teams will be neck and neck for the next
- 1:38:36Speaker 3: five or six years. And that's awesome for the NBA.
- 1:38:39Speaker 3: In the Eastern Conference, I truly have no idea. I
- 1:38:43Speaker 3: think the Knicks are top of the pack, but with
- 1:38:45Speaker 3: all this contract extension talk with Cap, that kind of
- 1:38:48Speaker 3: scares me. I don't like Philadelphia because dwelling beat hasn't
- 1:38:51Speaker 3: played more than 33 games in a season in the
- 1:38:53Speaker 3: last like three, four or five years. So you're relying
- 1:38:56Speaker 3: a lot on him. We still have not seen Jalen Brown,
- 1:38:59Speaker 3: LeBron show the basketball court. I mean, sure. On paper,
- 1:39:03Speaker 3: it looks perfect, but you get two guys with two
- 1:39:06Speaker 3: big personalities, two alpha personalities. If Jason Tatum couldn't make
- 1:39:10Speaker 3: it work with Jalen Brown, then how is LeBron going
- 1:39:12Speaker 3: to make it work? So we'll see with them. I
- 1:39:15Speaker 3: love Tyrese Maxey on paper. Mark, I'm with you. That's the, the,
- 1:39:18Speaker 3: most talented starting five in the nba um possibly at
- 1:39:23Speaker 3: least in the eastern conference but throughout an entire season
- 1:39:26Speaker 3: with the bench involved i just don't know if philly
- 1:39:28Speaker 3: can can stay healthy because remember lebron's what 42 years
- 1:39:31Speaker 3: old he's 42 he's he's not the miami heat 2012
- 1:39:35Speaker 3: lebron james anymore you know i'm sorry to tell the
- 1:39:37Speaker 3: lebron fans that he just hasn't been able to stay
- 1:39:39Speaker 3: healthy either he's 42 years old you know it's a
- 1:39:42Speaker 3: lot of wear and tear in his body Embiid can't
- 1:39:45Speaker 3: stay healthy. So there's a lot of question marks around Philadelphia.
- 1:39:48Speaker 2: Haven't he played 50-plus games the last two years? Embiid? No, LeBron. Yeah,
- 1:39:53Speaker 2: he has.
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: That's pretty good.
- 1:39:55Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think they're definitely going to dial back
- 1:39:57Speaker 3: his minutes.
- 1:39:58Speaker 2: And now his job is not to be the leading scorer.
- 1:40:01Speaker 2: And LeBron James took a lot of heat when he
- 1:40:04Speaker 2: was young in his career, his first 10 years. He
- 1:40:07Speaker 2: took a lot of heat for being the guy that
- 1:40:09Speaker 2: distributed the ball too much, that he didn't take on
- 1:40:13Speaker 2: the scoring role. Now he don't have to worry about
- 1:40:16Speaker 2: the heat. He can take not the heat as in
- 1:40:19Speaker 2: the team.
- 1:40:19Speaker 3: As in the Miami.
- 1:40:21Speaker 2: He can go out there and distribute the ball and
- 1:40:23Speaker 2: be the brains of that offense and draw double teams
- 1:40:27Speaker 2: and let people like Edgecombe and Maxey get to the
- 1:40:31Speaker 2: basket on back doors. The last game that I saw,
- 1:40:35Speaker 2: LeBron James had 11 assists at half.
- 1:40:39Speaker 3: At half.
- 1:40:41Speaker 2: So I can see him averaging... 12, 14 assists a game.
- 1:40:48Speaker 5: Wow.
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:40:49Speaker 3: Yeah, we'll see.
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: Uh, uh, and, and by the way, Kate Cunningham had
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: 22 points today on the eight of 18 shooting and
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: dished out eight assists as well.
- 1:40:58Speaker 3: So he's, he's an additional factor on that. Uh, we
- 1:41:01Speaker 3: need one more.
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: Break and then we'll come back with some final thoughts.
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: And again, if you're in the area, come on out
- 1:41:06Speaker 1: here to Boulevard social on North Lamar, 62, 15 North Lamar,
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: come out, uh, there, uh, specials go up until 7
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: o'clock tonight, that burger special.
- 1:41:17Speaker 3: I think, London, I'm going to try that.
- 1:41:18Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 1:41:19Speaker 3: Or the chicken sandwich or whatever.
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: They've got great appetizers.
- 1:41:22Speaker 3: I heard they've got a tri-tip sandwich.
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: Wow.
- 1:41:26Speaker 3: That's some serious.
- 1:41:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I like a good tri-tip.
- 1:41:29Speaker 3: They had you at tri-tip, I can tell.
- 1:41:31Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: We'll be back to wrap up today's edition of the
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: program from Boulevard Social, Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone,
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: and the IR Radio app.
