- 1:03Speaker 1: of Fame voter, author of Peyton and Breeze, The men
- 1:06Speaker 1: who built the greatest offense in NFL history. Jeff, first
- 1:12Speaker 1: of all, good morning, thanks for hanging out with us.
- 1:15Speaker 1: The Pro Football Hall of Fame induction a couple months away,
- 1:20Speaker 1: and We've talked to you about Peyton and Breeze many times.
- 1:24Speaker 1: I'm still fascinated by both men and their relationship, and
- 1:29Speaker 1: I know that they're close in a lot of respect.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Do you think that Breese ever finds himself having some
- 1:38Speaker 1: animosity because Peyton lost his way and it costs Breeze
- 1:44Speaker 1: a couple of years in the prime of his career.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Jeff, No not. I don't think Drew is wired that way.
- 1:52Speaker 2: I think he would look at himself and say, look,
- 1:56Speaker 2: why didn't I do better. I mean, it's just how
- 1:58Speaker 2: Drew's always the kind of looked at it. I would
- 2:01Speaker 2: be surprised if he'd blamed someone other than himself for
- 2:05Speaker 2: not accomplishing something. But certainly John Peyton bears some responsibility.
- 2:12Speaker 2: I think it was about two thousand and fourteen or
- 2:14Speaker 2: so when things really kind of went a ride. He
- 2:17Speaker 2: kind of lost his way, as you said, and it
- 2:20Speaker 2: was amazing that really. I think you have the credit
- 2:22Speaker 2: Mickey Loomis for sticking with him through those three seven
- 2:26Speaker 2: and nine seasons as they fixed the defense and brought
- 2:29Speaker 2: in Dennis Allen and had that great grab class in
- 2:32Speaker 2: twenty seventeen. A lot of people probably would have moved on,
- 2:35Speaker 2: but I think he had faith and Sean Payton, Sean
- 2:38Speaker 2: Payton did this day acknowledges that, do you.
- 2:44Speaker 1: I think Breeze is still underrated historically, even though the
- 2:48Speaker 1: Saints got a lot of love and got some prime
- 2:50Speaker 1: Tom dates and three NFC Championship games and the Lombardi Trophy.
- 2:55Speaker 1: I just still think there's a difference between doing things
- 2:58Speaker 1: at that level in New Orleans or even Seattle in
- 3:01Speaker 1: some markets, compared to some of the blue bloods of
- 3:04Speaker 1: New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, you know, Boston, Foxburg. You've been
- 3:08Speaker 1: covering the game for thirty years. You think I'm crazy
- 3:11Speaker 1: or do you agree with some of that?
- 3:13Speaker 2: Oh? No, I definitely believe it. I can tell you
- 3:16Speaker 2: there were some people that actually I had one person.
- 3:21Speaker 2: I'm not supposed to reveal a lot of stuff that
- 3:23Speaker 2: happens on the Hall of Fame boat, but there was
- 3:27Speaker 2: one person that actually said, if we were picking a
- 3:30Speaker 2: team right now and you were picking between Eli Manning
- 3:33Speaker 2: and Drew Brees, everyone in mist in this room would
- 3:35Speaker 2: pick Eli Manning, and my jaw about hit the floor.
- 3:39Speaker 2: And I have great respect for Eli Manning, but that
- 3:43Speaker 2: shows you that some people still do not appreciate his greatness.
- 3:48Speaker 2: And I think part of that is because of just
- 3:51Speaker 2: the way he went about being excellent, or the dominance
- 3:55Speaker 2: he showed with a very nuanced, disticated approach. Shedy, I've
- 4:00Speaker 2: compared him bo to Greg Maddox. You know, yeah, he
- 4:04Speaker 2: beats you by painting the black not with the overpowering
- 4:08Speaker 2: fastball like Nolan Ryan. Everybody appreciates Nolan Ryan. They appreciate
- 4:11Speaker 2: Aaron Rodgers flipping the ball sixty yards downfield. It's hard
- 4:15Speaker 2: to appreciate the precision on a daily basis or a
- 4:19Speaker 2: past to pass basis that Drew Brees had. It's uncommon,
- 4:25Speaker 2: it's genius, but it's hard to appreciate to the naked eyes,
- 4:29Speaker 2: especially in this day and age we live in where
- 4:32Speaker 2: it's all about social media, highlight and plays like that.
- 4:35Speaker 2: I mean, I can still remember not very long ago,
- 4:39Speaker 2: when you know people were talking about passes made in
- 4:45Speaker 2: a pro day. You know it would go viral for
- 4:48Speaker 2: weeks on one pass and a pro day a guy
- 4:50Speaker 2: made that's not Drew Brees. It takes something a little
- 4:54Speaker 2: more sophisticated to appreciate.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Jeff Duncan, that's a good player, coup man. I just
- 4:59Speaker 1: watched the Maddox documentary again and it's so damn Good's
- 5:03Speaker 1: that's good Drew Brees and Greg Maddox, Yes, all day long,
- 5:09Speaker 1: almost death by a thousand paper cuts. But I agree
- 5:13Speaker 1: with you in this ten to fifteen second clip of
- 5:16Speaker 1: TikTok and social media. They may not have gotten all
- 5:19Speaker 1: the love they should get over some of the other players. Okay,
- 5:26Speaker 1: so you don't think Breeze looks at it like that,
- 5:30Speaker 1: do you? So you're pretty close to these guys, considering
- 5:36Speaker 1: you know, you covered them for so long and and
- 5:39Speaker 1: wrote the book. Do you think it's still is gut
- 5:45Speaker 1: wrenching for Drew that they didn't win another He doesn't
- 5:49Speaker 1: blame it on Sean, but it's gut wrenching that they
- 5:52Speaker 1: didn't win one more Lombardi Trophy.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Jeff, Well, there's no doubt. I mean, I think instead
- 5:59Speaker 2: of blaming so on, I would think if there was
- 6:01Speaker 2: any blame, it would just be to the defense inability
- 6:06Speaker 2: to close out a game. I don't know what the
- 6:09Speaker 2: stat exactly is, but I know for a fact I've
- 6:13Speaker 2: written it a million times that he gave them the
- 6:16Speaker 2: lead or at least a tie in the final two
- 6:19Speaker 2: minutes of almost every one of those playoff games they lost.
- 6:23Speaker 2: You know, the Minneapolis Miracle, they had the lead with
- 6:25Speaker 2: twenty seven seconds left, They took the lead against the
- 6:29Speaker 2: forty nine ers in twenty eleven inside the final minute,
- 6:33Speaker 2: they tied the game against Minnesota that ultimately went in overtime.
- 6:36Speaker 2: They had the lead against the Rams, and the people
- 6:39Speaker 2: forget and the Nola no call. They actually had the lead.
- 6:42Speaker 2: You know, they just needed to close that game out
- 6:45Speaker 2: and couldn't stop the Rams from kicking a tying field goal. So,
- 6:49Speaker 2: you know, the defense at that time just could not
- 6:52Speaker 2: get the stop they needed like they did in the
- 6:55Speaker 2: Super Bowl. I mean just flipping around. I mean Tracy
- 6:58Speaker 2: Porter makes the interception and then closes out the game.
- 7:01Speaker 2: They couldn't make that play, you know, in the critical
- 7:05Speaker 2: moments of those two thousand and seventeen, eighteen, nineteen twenty seasons,
- 7:11Speaker 2: they they couldn't get off the field. So really, in
- 7:13Speaker 2: my opinion, that's why I always say that through is
- 7:16Speaker 2: the greatest closer I've ever covered. I Mean, he delivered
- 7:19Speaker 2: almost every time in those situations, but they didn't win
- 7:22Speaker 2: the game, so his heroics were kind of lost.
- 7:25Speaker 1: Jeff Duncan, Saints Insider, NOLA dot Com Times, Picky yun
- 7:30Speaker 1: on the Farm Bureau Insurance guest line. Drew Brees will
- 7:34Speaker 1: go in the Pro Football Hall of Fame this summer
- 7:36Speaker 1: in Canton, Ohio, first ballot, slam dunk and more than
- 7:41Speaker 1: deserved with what he did. So did the Saints waste
- 7:49Speaker 1: breeze in his prime.
- 7:52Speaker 2: Oh, I don't think so. No, they just couldn't win
- 7:55Speaker 2: the game. I mean they won, they couldn't win the
- 7:58Speaker 2: big game in the Keeybone. They couldn't close it out.
- 8:02Speaker 2: But they won more games than anybody in football during
- 8:04Speaker 2: that period except the Patriots. They took a franchise that
- 8:10Speaker 2: had never won at that level and wonted one of
- 8:13Speaker 2: the most absurd levels. And and in that era in football,
- 8:17Speaker 2: it broke records. They raised the perception and improved the perception,
- 8:23Speaker 2: transformed the image of the organization. And we've seen since
- 8:28Speaker 2: they left that the organization is not the same and
- 8:32Speaker 2: it and I'm not sure to ever gain that same
- 8:34Speaker 2: profile or relevance in the national consciousness. Even even if
- 8:40Speaker 2: Tyler Shutt turns out to be a franchise quarterback, it
- 8:43Speaker 2: just doesn't have the same you know, Q rating that
- 8:48Speaker 2: they had when Drew Brees was there. But I don't
- 8:50Speaker 2: I don't look at it a waist that this kind
- 8:52Speaker 2: of reminds me a little of the question. You know,
- 8:54Speaker 2: they got asked, if you honest to the tempo that
- 8:57Speaker 2: went viral? Where you know, is he is? That season
- 8:59Speaker 2: of failure? It's hard to say it's a waste or
- 9:02Speaker 2: a failure just because you don't win a title. I
- 9:05Speaker 2: know that's where we're at in America. But to me,
- 9:08Speaker 2: the success the Saints Haad Trump's anything by, you know,
- 9:14Speaker 2: saying it's a lack of championships.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Would you have him as? Would you have Drew Brees
- 9:20Speaker 1: as even though he's got one Lombardi and one Labarti's incredible,
- 9:24Speaker 1: as we all know, because Dan Fouts and Dan Marino
- 9:26Speaker 1: and Warren Moon, who are all incredible, don't have one.
- 9:30Speaker 1: And you have to have so many other things around
- 9:32Speaker 1: you to make it all work and happen, as you know.
- 9:35Speaker 1: But do you have Drew Brees as a top ten
- 9:39Speaker 1: quarterback of all time?
- 9:41Speaker 2: Oh? No question. I mean I've got him in the
- 9:44Speaker 2: top three. To me, he's one of the greatest players
- 9:47Speaker 2: in the history of the NFL. And you know, it
- 9:49Speaker 2: was amazing to me if you remember bo not too
- 9:52Speaker 2: long ago, I can't remember what year it was, two
- 9:54Speaker 2: thousand and nineteen, whatever year it was, it was not
- 9:57Speaker 2: long ago. The NFL put together a a top one
- 10:00Speaker 2: hundred players list and they used coaches, former players, and
- 10:05Speaker 2: coaches and media members to select that list and Breeze
- 10:09Speaker 2: was not even in it, and not even the top
- 10:11Speaker 2: one hundred. It was the biggest joke of all time.
- 10:15Speaker 2: I know his career wasn't over at the time, but still,
- 10:19Speaker 2: I use this fat all the time, and I'm not
- 10:22Speaker 2: a big stat guy, but it speaks to his greatness.
- 10:24Speaker 2: There have been fifteen five thousand yard passing seasons in
- 10:28Speaker 2: the history of the NFL, and Drew's got five of them.
- 10:32Speaker 2: No one else has got more than two, you know.
- 10:34Speaker 2: To me, that speaks to his prolificacy.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Wow, Drew Brees, Now, how I mean you'll be there that?
- 10:42Speaker 1: I mean? How many pieces will you write in July,
- 10:49Speaker 1: on the lead up and the weekend after as Breeze
- 10:55Speaker 1: is inducted into the Hall of Fame this summer, Jeff,
- 10:59Speaker 1: I have no idea.
- 10:59Speaker 2: We have had that meeting yet. I'm scared to know
- 11:03Speaker 2: how many it's going to be, because we wrote a
- 11:06Speaker 2: bunch of them leading up to him getting, you know,
- 11:09Speaker 2: inducted at the NFL Honors banquet at the Super Bowl,
- 11:12Speaker 2: you know, and then when he retired, we wrote even more.
- 11:15Speaker 2: And I don't think we can write enough on brew
- 11:16Speaker 2: Brees's be the greatest athlete in the history of New Orleans,
- 11:22Speaker 2: probably for Louisiana as well. And no matter what we
- 11:26Speaker 2: write on him, people devour it. They want to read
- 11:29Speaker 2: about him. And I think that's just a tribute to,
- 11:31Speaker 2: you know, his legacy and his pursuit of excellence. I
- 11:35Speaker 2: think everybody identified with that. He his storyline of bouncing
- 11:39Speaker 2: back from should the career threatening shoulder injury. I just
- 11:44Speaker 2: filed actually the story for the Hall of Fame yearbook.
- 11:48Speaker 2: It'll be sold up in Canton. So that's one I
- 11:50Speaker 2: know for sure that I had to write leading up
- 11:53Speaker 2: to it.
- 11:55Speaker 1: Hey, Jeff Duncan Nola dot Com on the out of
- 11:57Speaker 1: Bound show, Who Who? When? Do we know who's going
- 12:02Speaker 1: to introduce him? Or has it been announced?
- 12:05Speaker 2: I don't think it's been announced. I mean, I think
- 12:07Speaker 2: Grew selects it obviously who it is, and I'm sure
- 12:10Speaker 2: he will announce it in his own way, probably through
- 12:13Speaker 2: his social media. But I'd be surprised if it's somebody
- 12:17Speaker 2: other than Sean Don Paton. Yeah, to be honest with you, okay,
- 12:20Speaker 2: I think that's true. I think it'll be, but I
- 12:23Speaker 2: don't know. I mean, maybe he has somebody from you know,
- 12:27Speaker 2: his high school days or something that launched his career.
- 12:30Speaker 2: But I would imagine strong will be right at the
- 12:33Speaker 2: top of the list.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Oka what you wrote about it. We've talked about it.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Sean's fury and that's what made him brilliant and great too,
- 12:41Speaker 1: and his edge and is crazy and his ability to
- 12:45Speaker 1: harness it too when he when he needed to. How
- 12:49Speaker 1: would you describe to our listeners Drew's ability. So I
- 12:54Speaker 1: think coaching, like high school coaches and college coaches can
- 12:58Speaker 1: be even or maybe in their face or you know,
- 13:03Speaker 1: on players challenging players. But I know a lot of
- 13:06Speaker 1: that happens in the NFL, and you can walk me
- 13:09Speaker 1: through it, you know the different levels of that if
- 13:12Speaker 1: you would like. But how would you describe Breeze and
- 13:18Speaker 1: his ability to handle Sean and is crazy but also
- 13:23Speaker 1: leverage Sean's brilliance throughout their time together?
- 13:28Speaker 2: Yeah, Well, Brees liked being coached hard. I mean throughout
- 13:33Speaker 2: his career. He wanted coaches with the same you know,
- 13:37Speaker 2: pursuit attention to detailed pursuit of excellence, so he bet
- 13:42Speaker 2: off that intensity. A lot of players do that. Cover
- 13:45Speaker 2: the play for the Saints when Sean was there, I
- 13:48Speaker 2: think once you got to know that Peyton cared about
- 13:51Speaker 2: the player. I mean, it doesn't work unless you have
- 13:54Speaker 2: the relationship as a foundation, you know. I think I
- 13:59Speaker 2: even heard brain Kelly say that because people saw him
- 14:02Speaker 2: chewing out Garrett Nussmayer on the sideline, and he talked
- 14:06Speaker 2: about that. He said, it would not work if Garrett
- 14:09Speaker 2: and I did not have a good relationship. You have
- 14:11Speaker 2: to build that trust and that respect long before you
- 14:15Speaker 2: get to that moment. I think that was certainly true
- 14:17Speaker 2: of Drew and Sean, and everybody understood. I mean, I
- 14:21Speaker 2: wrote stories about Sunday Sean and game day Sean and
- 14:25Speaker 2: standing that's how Peyton is wired on game days. What's
- 14:28Speaker 2: funny about that a little bit is I remember covering
- 14:31Speaker 2: Greg Williams. Greg Williams, if you watched him in practice,
- 14:35Speaker 2: he was a wild man in practice, showing players out,
- 14:38Speaker 2: getting them fired up. In practice. On game days he
- 14:42Speaker 2: kept a very even keel, unlike Sean. Sean was the opposite.
- 14:45Speaker 2: Sean was more of a teacher in practice, very rarely
- 14:49Speaker 2: raised his voice in practice, but on game days he
- 14:51Speaker 2: was a wild man. And I think that was the
- 14:54Speaker 2: perfect yin and yang of combination of coaches. When he
- 14:57Speaker 2: and Greg were together on that staff and won the
- 14:59Speaker 2: super because they were exact opposite on game days. And
- 15:02Speaker 2: I think what Greg would always say is, look, I
- 15:05Speaker 2: have to have the player and have to bring them
- 15:07Speaker 2: back on game days, get them because close to the
- 15:09Speaker 2: edge of the cliff as that as they can get
- 15:12Speaker 2: without going over. And I had to be the you know,
- 15:16Speaker 2: the voice of reason to get them back, whereas Dawn
- 15:20Speaker 2: was the exact opposite. And I think people fed off
- 15:22Speaker 2: that and understood that Peyton cares about them and just
- 15:26Speaker 2: wants them to be as good as they can be
- 15:27Speaker 2: at the.
- 15:28Speaker 1: Profession Saints Insider noola dot Com, Jeff Duncan on the
- 15:32Speaker 1: Farm Bureau Insurance guest Line, we're talking Drew Brees. He'll
- 15:35Speaker 1: head into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this summer,
- 15:38Speaker 1: first ballot, slam dunk. It'll be a hell of a
- 15:42Speaker 1: party for the Whudat nation in Kanton, Ohio and those
- 15:46Speaker 1: that are watching all around this region. Who was Drew
- 15:51Speaker 1: Brees's favorite skill player in New Orleans.
- 15:56Speaker 2: I would say it's a tie between Colston, Marcus Colston
- 16:02Speaker 2: and Jimmy Graham. I mean, he obviously had a very
- 16:04Speaker 2: strong connection with Jimmy Graham. He had him actually introduce
- 16:08Speaker 2: him at the Saints Hall of Fame induction ceremony a
- 16:11Speaker 2: couple of years ago. And I think Colston because they
- 16:14Speaker 2: came in together in O six and he had a
- 16:17Speaker 2: very similar kind of rags the richest story as the
- 16:20Speaker 2: seventh round pick out a hastra that nobody knew who
- 16:23Speaker 2: he was, uh, and you know, built built himself into
- 16:27Speaker 2: a you know, certainly a great college NFL player, the
- 16:31Speaker 2: all time leading receiver in the franchise. Those two stick
- 16:35Speaker 2: out to me, and I pointed this out a bunch
- 16:37Speaker 2: of times. Bo I mean, really, the only Pro Bowl
- 16:42Speaker 2: Guild position player Grew Bries ever played with other than
- 16:46Speaker 2: Michael Thomas was Jimmy Graham, who was an All Pro
- 16:48Speaker 2: tight end. That's another tribute and testament to his greatness
- 16:53Speaker 2: is that when he was when he was in his prime,
- 16:56Speaker 2: the Saint's felt so confident that his ability to raise
- 17:00Speaker 2: everyone's ability around him that they didn't invest in first
- 17:04Speaker 2: round draft pick or second round picks, even on receivers
- 17:07Speaker 2: for the most part. And we all know that game,
- 17:10Speaker 2: I think it was Thanksgiving Day against the Atlanta Falcons,
- 17:14Speaker 2: when drew through four touchdown passes to four undrafted free
- 17:18Speaker 2: agents that's never happened in NFL history, and I'm pretty
- 17:21Speaker 2: sure it won't ever happen again.
- 17:23Speaker 1: Wow. Wow, Jeff Duncan on the Out of Bound Show
- 17:28Speaker 1: ESPN one oh five nine of the Zone, How long
- 17:31Speaker 1: did you prepare so you had to present Drew Brees
- 17:35Speaker 1: to the Pro Football Hall of Fame voters? Is that
- 17:39Speaker 1: a good way to frame it up? Jeff?
- 17:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I make the presentation for any I'm the New
- 17:46Speaker 2: Orleans representative, so anybody that spit the majority of their
- 17:49Speaker 2: career here, I'm the one that is given the opportunity,
- 17:53Speaker 2: first opportunity to present.
- 17:55Speaker 1: How many hours did you prep for that?
- 17:59Speaker 2: Oh? It's hard to say. I mean, obviously, my whole career,
- 18:02Speaker 2: I've been prepping for that moment. I mean in a
- 18:05Speaker 2: way because I did the Peyton books. But you still
- 18:09Speaker 2: have to take it seriously. You have an obligation of
- 18:11Speaker 2: responsibility to the player. It's part of their legacy. It
- 18:15Speaker 2: means so much to their families. Uh So, in the past,
- 18:20Speaker 2: some players, their their greatness was so obvious. I can
- 18:25Speaker 2: still remember a few players, Brett Barb being one, where
- 18:29Speaker 2: the presenter just said the name and we all just
- 18:32Speaker 2: got on with our business because we knew they were
- 18:33Speaker 2: going in. It was like literally one second presentation. But
- 18:38Speaker 2: in in defense, in like, as we've gone on, the
- 18:41Speaker 2: Hall of Fame has decided, Hey, we owe it to
- 18:44Speaker 2: the player to present them. I think they like to
- 18:47Speaker 2: film it to and use it as part of the
- 18:50Speaker 2: Hall of Fame media. Uh So now we do the
- 18:53Speaker 2: do the full presentation. I did the only allowed five minutes.
- 18:56Speaker 2: I did the full five minutes and Drew even though
- 18:58Speaker 2: I think everybody in the room he was going in
- 19:00Speaker 2: right away.
- 19:04Speaker 1: When was the last time you talked to Drew Brees?
- 19:08Speaker 2: Probably just at the Hall of Fame, I mean at
- 19:11Speaker 2: the NFL Honors the night he got.
- 19:13Speaker 1: In, Okay, And where was that at the Super Bowl?
- 19:18Speaker 2: Yeah? I was out in San Francisco right after the
- 19:22Speaker 2: after he was inductor, I mean after he was announced
- 19:24Speaker 2: as a member of the Class of twenty twenty six.
- 19:27Speaker 2: And uh he was overwhelmed, even though I'm sure he
- 19:30Speaker 2: felt confident he was going in. Now, I did talk
- 19:33Speaker 2: to him before. I always liked to talk to the
- 19:36Speaker 2: player i'm representing or presenting the candidate beforehand and send
- 19:42Speaker 2: them my presentation. I want them to feel a part
- 19:44Speaker 2: of the process. I don't know if the other Hall
- 19:47Speaker 2: of Fame Selection Committee members do that, but I feel
- 19:51Speaker 2: it's a team effort. We want to we want to
- 19:53Speaker 2: accomplish this together, if you will. Certainly the players accomplishing
- 19:57Speaker 2: it on their on the you know, the basis of
- 19:59Speaker 2: the career, but I want them involved and engaged. And
- 20:03Speaker 2: and he called me that morning. We talked through it
- 20:06Speaker 2: the morning of the presentation. Didn't really have any big
- 20:10Speaker 2: changes or anything, but he was he was all in
- 20:12Speaker 2: as he always is.
- 20:13Speaker 1: And I'm sure you're planning to try to get some
- 20:17Speaker 1: one on one with him before it or like during
- 20:21Speaker 1: the weekend. How does that How does that look or
- 20:23Speaker 1: how do you think that may look? Yeah?
- 20:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean he's he's so busy in his personal
- 20:29Speaker 2: life with his own business ventures and things he's doing.
- 20:32Speaker 2: But I'm sure at some point here in the next
- 20:34Speaker 2: once I figure out what we're all going to be
- 20:36Speaker 2: responsible for doing, I'll try and get with him out
- 20:39Speaker 2: in California and get out there and spend some time
- 20:43Speaker 2: with him. You know, there's only so much that hasn't
- 20:46Speaker 2: been written about him. That's the thing. You know, this
- 20:48Speaker 2: we've written so much as a journalist. As a writer,
- 20:52Speaker 2: it's sometimes The challenge is trying to find a new
- 20:55Speaker 2: way to present information that you've you know, been presenting
- 20:58Speaker 2: your whole career. I mean not just dusting at the
- 21:01Speaker 2: time of speaking Union in the New Orleans, but I
- 21:03Speaker 2: mean Drew's a high profile star athlete who's been covered
- 21:07Speaker 2: at a high level throughout his career, so his story
- 21:10Speaker 2: has been well documented. Finding something new will be a challenge.
- 21:14Speaker 1: What do you think he wants to do? Do you
- 21:16Speaker 1: think he wants to call games on a regular basis?
- 21:20Speaker 2: Yeah? I think he wants to stay involved. You know,
- 21:22Speaker 2: I can see him one day potentially, you know, maybe
- 21:25Speaker 2: after his kids. You know, his kids are getting older now,
- 21:28Speaker 2: once they get out of the house, maybe on to college.
- 21:31Speaker 2: I can see him wanting to be involved, sort of
- 21:33Speaker 2: like Tom Brady is with the Raiders at that level
- 21:37Speaker 2: of the NFL, almost at ownership management level. I don't
- 21:41Speaker 2: see him ever getting into coaching. I don't think that's
- 21:43Speaker 2: what he wants to do, but I think that's going
- 21:45Speaker 2: to be a ways off. I think he wants to
- 21:47Speaker 2: be a dad right now and invest in in his
- 21:50Speaker 2: kids before they leave while he's got that time.
- 21:54Speaker 1: Sure, all right, I just want you to know that
- 21:59Speaker 1: was awesome, and we may have to do that, like
- 22:02Speaker 1: we may have to do this a couple more times,
- 22:03Speaker 1: even before you go up up to Canton. I just
- 22:07Speaker 1: think this is going to be incredible, the celebration of
- 22:11Speaker 1: Breeze throughout the summer, but definitely in in late July
- 22:15Speaker 1: in Canton, Ohio. I'm fascinated with him. But then after
- 22:18Speaker 1: you wrote the book and everything else, and you know,
- 22:21Speaker 1: after someone leaves and you you realize they were great
- 22:24Speaker 1: along the way, but then you realize how really, you know,
- 22:27Speaker 1: great and incredible they were. You were fortunate too to
- 22:31Speaker 1: be able to cover him. I'm sure you realize that, right.
- 22:34Speaker 2: Oh yeah. And I was going back reading through Cayton
- 22:38Speaker 2: and Breeze when I was writing this Hall of Fame
- 22:40Speaker 2: year book story just to kind of refresh my memory
- 22:43Speaker 2: and found myself is my own work, but I still
- 22:46Speaker 2: found myself being engrossed and impressed with just his great
- 22:52Speaker 2: you know, pursuit of excellence and attention to detail everything
- 22:56Speaker 2: that made him through Breeze. I think you're right, so
- 23:00Speaker 2: we realized how special it was and how special he was.
- 23:02Speaker 2: The further we get away from his tenure here.
- 23:05Speaker 1: Wow. Jeff Duncan Nola dot Com wrote the book Peyton
- 23:08Speaker 1: and Brees. He joined us on the Out of Bounds Show.
