- 0:01Speaker 1: There we go. Elena's on the phone. By Elena. He Hello,
- 0:06Speaker 1: it's Elena would from Nightingale College. How are things with you?
- 0:11Speaker 2: Things are pretty darn good. How about you?
- 0:13Speaker 1: You know, if you're fine, You're just fine purposes of
- 0:17Speaker 1: our conversation, I'm great. Okay, let's see I was I've
- 0:24Speaker 1: lost my place here of what we're talking about. We're
- 0:26Speaker 1: talking about how to feel less lonely and more connected.
- 0:31Speaker 1: That's that's a very timely topic. People do feel kind
- 0:35Speaker 1: of left out of a world sometimes, don't they.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Absolutely yes, And there's I think there's just more awareness
- 0:43Speaker 2: of how isolated and lonely people have been feeling, in
- 0:47Speaker 2: particular since the pandemic.
- 0:49Speaker 1: M So, what are some of the things that people
- 0:52Speaker 1: can do.
- 0:55Speaker 2: First thing is to understand the power of connection. Even
- 0:59Speaker 2: even folks who feel like they're more introverted still need
- 1:03Speaker 2: some level of social connection and just interaction in order
- 1:09Speaker 2: to maintain a certain level of well being.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Okay, I mean you're saying that there that even people
- 1:16Speaker 1: who say I don't particularly like to be around people,
- 1:19Speaker 1: they probably do need a little bit of interesting.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Yes. Yeah, good healthy relationships are really good for mental health,
- 1:27Speaker 2: for our physical health. Just are overall well.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Being and what about So now I found the notes
- 1:34Speaker 1: here and it says the intentional about the relationships. This
- 1:39Speaker 1: is really important, the relationships that you already have. And
- 1:42Speaker 1: I'm bad at this, I must confess same.
- 1:47Speaker 2: No, I am the same. And you know, a lot
- 1:50Speaker 2: of times when we start feeling lonely, we think like, oh,
- 1:53Speaker 2: I have to go out and make more friends or
- 1:56Speaker 2: find new people. And a lot of times we already
- 2:00Speaker 2: have a lot of people in our lives that we
- 2:02Speaker 2: just simply haven't reached out to or talked to or
- 2:06Speaker 2: connected meaningfully with in a long time. And so we
- 2:10Speaker 2: can really start where we already are and just nurtured
- 2:13Speaker 2: those relationships.
- 2:14Speaker 1: And sometimes these are people that are that you don't
- 2:18Speaker 1: think of very often, but they think of you as
- 2:21Speaker 1: a very close friend and you kind of don't. That
- 2:24Speaker 1: happens fairly often.
- 2:25Speaker 2: I think absolutely. I think there's sometimes maybe we're just
- 2:31Speaker 2: missing out often that that great connection opportunity.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Uh. Now what it says here learn the formula for
- 2:38Speaker 1: feeling feelings of connections and belonging. There's an actual like
- 2:42Speaker 1: math I.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Know, I know it's emotional maths. So it's a little different.
- 2:49Speaker 1: How does that work.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Research has shown that healthy relationships have three themes, which
- 2:55Speaker 2: are positivity, consistency, and vulnerability be and so this just
- 3:01Speaker 2: means that you both feel like the relationship is enhancing
- 3:06Speaker 2: your life in some way. You are connecting regularly and
- 3:12Speaker 2: you are able to be who you truly are in this.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Relationship and that what does that get you?
- 3:21Speaker 2: It gives you feelings of the longing and connected. Oh
- 3:24Speaker 2: don't you want that?
- 3:26Speaker 1: Yeah? I do?
- 3:27Speaker 2: Actually, And what does that get ya?
- 3:31Speaker 1: That supposed to get you? No, I understand that it is.
- 3:35Speaker 1: It is important to feel that you belong and and
- 3:38Speaker 1: that you're connected to other people. What about opportunities to
- 3:44Speaker 1: serve and learn to ask for help when you need it?
- 3:49Speaker 2: Yes? Yeah, so I think we all know serving in
- 3:53Speaker 2: our community, helping our friends things like that, it makes
- 3:56Speaker 2: us feel really good, it supports others, and a lot
- 4:00Speaker 2: of us really struggle to ask for help when we
- 4:03Speaker 2: need it too, And so we just need to make
- 4:06Speaker 2: sure we kind of have a road that goes both ways.
- 4:09Speaker 1: I sometimes have the tendency to say, you know, say,
- 4:12Speaker 1: opportunities to serve, to kind of serve the community. I
- 4:16Speaker 1: do that on the radio. I don't need to do
- 4:17Speaker 1: it anywhere else. So I got four hours a day
- 4:21Speaker 1: to do that on the radio. I can just stay
- 4:24Speaker 1: home after that. But you know, serving in the community though,
- 4:28Speaker 1: it is a great way to meet people too.
- 4:30Speaker 2: It really is. Yeah.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Yeah, Like the Out of the Darkness Walk that we
- 4:35Speaker 1: do every year for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention
- 4:38Speaker 1: coming up on September sixth, please be there. Go to
- 4:41Speaker 1: AFSP dot org slash law SLC for more. You meet
- 4:47Speaker 1: people there who you all have this common bond of
- 4:52Speaker 1: someone in your life family member or friend has died
- 4:56Speaker 1: by suicide. And you think, oh, it's a really depressing
- 4:59Speaker 1: thing to get together with those people. No, it's not
- 5:02Speaker 1: at all. It's a it's actually quite uh uplifting, and
- 5:06Speaker 1: people find that it's it's a it's a really joyful experience.
- 5:15Speaker 2: Absolutely such a.
- 5:17Speaker 1: I'm sorry I put you to sleep.
- 5:20Speaker 2: It was just a lovely pitch. I was just nodding along.
- 5:24Speaker 2: You can't see me though.
- 5:25Speaker 1: You know you are nodding off. You are nodding along.
- 5:29Speaker 2: No, no, no, A right.
- 5:31Speaker 1: So let's see finally, get to know what you need,
- 5:36Speaker 1: what your connection needs and values are.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Yes, absolutely, so just get to know the things that
- 5:42Speaker 2: make you feel more connected that make you feel more
- 5:46Speaker 2: like you're part of the community, and seek out those opportunities.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Okay, I'm going to take all of these to heart
- 5:55Speaker 1: and and sleep on them. I won't. She's such a
- 6:00Speaker 1: nice person. I met Elena in person the other day,
- 6:04Speaker 1: and I would never lie to her. Well, so I
- 6:07Speaker 1: might sometimes If people want more information, Elena, where do
- 6:10Speaker 1: they find it?
