- 0:16I am down and willing,
- 0:17so I will find a way.
- 0:18It took a minute,
- 0:19now it didn't have to ride away.
- 0:21When it get hot in the kitchen,
- 0:22you decide to stay.
- 0:23That's how it win us, man.
- 0:24Stick a fork in the head of
- 0:26my dinner plate.
- 0:34what is going on everybody
- 0:35welcome to the Clydesdale
- 0:37media's semi-finalist
- 0:39series this is our second
- 0:41so far yesterday we
- 0:42interviewed Scott Tetlow
- 0:43didn't see that go check
- 0:44that out it's on YouTube
- 0:45now and today we're
- 0:47starting our all like I
- 0:49think it's Canada Day here
- 0:50at Clydesdale media our
- 0:52first Canadian of three
- 0:53today Emily Rolfe what's
- 0:55going on Emily hello
- 0:58Yeah.
- 1:00We've been accused of being Canadian bias,
- 1:04and we're really proving it today.
- 1:05Who isn't?
- 1:06We're so nice.
- 1:10So I'm so excited to have
- 1:12you on the show because
- 1:13last year it was like we
- 1:14talked every week.
- 1:15We followed you through the whole season,
- 1:17got to know you really well,
- 1:19and this year I haven't got
- 1:20to talk to you at all.
- 1:22Yeah, I know.
- 1:22I mean, it's kind of flown by, though,
- 1:25you have to admit.
- 1:26Yeah.
- 1:27It is.
- 1:28It almost feels compressed, but it's not.
- 1:30Yeah.
- 1:31Like quarterfinals are done
- 1:33and semifinals are almost here.
- 1:35Yeah,
- 1:35I think last year quarters were right
- 1:37after the Open and then
- 1:38there was a long until
- 1:39semis and now it's like the opposite.
- 1:41We had a few lull weeks there and then,
- 1:44yeah, quarters and go.
- 1:47So there's a lot of noise
- 1:49around quarterfinals this year.
- 1:51Were you impacted by any of that,
- 1:54like emotionally, mentally,
- 1:57anything like that,
- 1:58just trying to get through the week?
- 2:00Or did you just ignore it
- 2:02and figured you'd come out
- 2:03on the other side?
- 2:04A little bit of both.
- 2:07I think, like everyone,
- 2:10I kind of naively just put
- 2:12in my scores and was like, okay, sweet,
- 2:13done.
- 2:15And then when all the
- 2:16penalties started rolling out,
- 2:17it was like, ooh.
- 2:18Yeah.
- 2:20And like everyone knows,
- 2:21I redid that first workout
- 2:22three times because I had video issues.
- 2:25So the benefit of that was I
- 2:28watched my first video until it cut out.
- 2:33And yeah,
- 2:35I just picked out a couple of
- 2:35tweaks and was like,
- 2:37some of those step ups,
- 2:38like if they want to be really strict,
- 2:39they could be.
- 2:40And yeah,
- 2:42so really it was a blessing that
- 2:44I redid it because who knows,
- 2:46I could have been...
- 2:48could have been on the other
- 2:49side of that so really
- 2:51lucky there it was painful
- 2:53at the time but I'm lucky
- 2:56and so I i kind of want to
- 2:57dive into that a little bit
- 2:58you know carolyn privo is a
- 2:59part of our thursday night
- 3:01show now she said she did
- 3:02that workout looked at it
- 3:04and said if they want to be
- 3:06strict they could they
- 3:08could know rep me here and
- 3:09she redid it as well and
- 3:12thank goodness because now
- 3:13you're both are sitting in
- 3:14the top 10 going into semifinals
- 3:17Do you review all your
- 3:18videos or was it just
- 3:19because you had the clock issue?
- 3:22Yeah.
- 3:22Well, from now on I will, but no,
- 3:26usually I don't.
- 3:27So usually,
- 3:28which is crazy now that I think about it,
- 3:30cause so much can go wrong.
- 3:31Um, but no, usually I just upload it,
- 3:35copy the link to my notes
- 3:37and submit it when, you know, I,
- 3:39I check to make sure it plays,
- 3:40but I've never watched it fully through.
- 3:43Um,
- 3:45Um,
- 3:46which is a lesson that now I will for
- 3:48sure.
- 3:50Do you think that changes
- 3:51across the board for all athletes now?
- 3:54I think a little bit for sure.
- 3:56Um, and I think it was hard because, uh,
- 4:00maybe the angles at what
- 4:01people videoed out were
- 4:02different and because there was no,
- 4:04there was no guidelines there.
- 4:06So I think that made it tough for people.
- 4:09Um, yeah, it's just unfortunate situation,
- 4:13but cause again, if you're competing live,
- 4:15your judge tells you once you fix it,
- 4:17you missed the one rep.
- 4:19Like you didn't fly through
- 4:21the workout and then get told after,
- 4:22which,
- 4:24Yeah,
- 4:24I feel for the athletes that that
- 4:25happened to.
- 4:26It sucks.
- 4:28So I've made an argument
- 4:30that probably doesn't put
- 4:31me on the popular side of the athletes.
- 4:33I don't know.
- 4:34But I've seen a lot of
- 4:35really good athletes not
- 4:37get moved forward because of crap videos.
- 4:41Yeah.
- 4:42And people who do not meet the standards,
- 4:44then they get to semifinals
- 4:45or the next live competition,
- 4:47and they're incapable of
- 4:49doing the work that's
- 4:51required at that level.
- 4:52Yeah.
- 4:53So I think it's a good step
- 4:56if we're going to go in
- 4:56this direction consistently.
- 4:59Yeah.
- 5:01And across the board,
- 5:02like I think they should
- 5:04have had quarters right
- 5:06after the open to give more
- 5:07time for video review to
- 5:09make sure all the videos got that review.
- 5:12Yeah.
- 5:13Cause yeah, people are complaining that,
- 5:15Oh,
- 5:15like they didn't even look at three
- 5:17and four or some people did,
- 5:18but it's like,
- 5:22I think they say they're
- 5:24only going to look at one.
- 5:26I mean,
- 5:26they obviously have to look at more
- 5:27for the top 40,
- 5:28but basically if you have a
- 5:31test and there's four tests
- 5:32and you don't know which
- 5:34one they're going to review,
- 5:35you best do well on all
- 5:37four because you don't know.
- 5:38And I think that's what they
- 5:39kind of go for, but I don't know.
- 5:42Yeah.
- 5:44I wish we could give them
- 5:45more time or more staff to
- 5:48be able to do it because it seems silly.
- 5:51It's like drug testing one
- 5:52or two people on a team and
- 5:54you're good to go if one or two pass.
- 5:57Yeah.
- 5:57You know,
- 5:59that seems to happen a lot with CrossFit.
- 6:01Mm-hmm.
- 6:03So looking at your placings,
- 6:07they've improved year over
- 6:09year over year.
- 6:10Mm-hmm.
- 6:12What does that mean to you
- 6:14when everybody around you
- 6:15is improving and you're
- 6:17improving at a level where
- 6:18the leaderboard is showing
- 6:19it year after year?
- 6:21Yeah, it's very encouraging for sure.
- 6:24That's kind of what keeps me going.
- 6:27Like I just keep getting better and better,
- 6:29which is, yeah, it's great.
- 6:31Yeah.
- 6:33Yeah, I mean,
- 6:33you're coming into the
- 6:34semifinal in the third
- 6:35position in the West.
- 6:37That's the highest you've
- 6:38ever entered semis.
- 6:41Does that give you any confidence,
- 6:43or do you just... Yeah, I think so.
- 6:46I mean, we all know it doesn't matter.
- 6:49You could come in the last
- 6:50heat and make the games.
- 6:52But yeah,
- 6:54it does give you a bit of confidence,
- 6:55and I think just this whole
- 6:57year of training,
- 6:58Kyle switched around a few things, and...
- 7:02I think it's really, um, yeah,
- 7:05I've really benefited from
- 7:06it and it's been a hard year of training,
- 7:09but a really good year.
- 7:11And you yourself feel better
- 7:13now than you have in past years?
- 7:16Oh yeah.
- 7:17Um, fitness wise and strength wise.
- 7:20Um, and like I say,
- 7:21like we've tried a couple
- 7:24different things this year
- 7:25and I think they're really paying off.
- 7:27And, um,
- 7:29Injury-wise, too.
- 7:30Last year, at this time,
- 7:31I was still dealing with
- 7:32that calf that was just hampering me.
- 7:38Knock on wood, going into semis,
- 7:41I'm feeling really good.
- 7:43We talked to Scott Tetlow yesterday,
- 7:45and he actually backed off
- 7:46volume this year.
- 7:47He said it's the first time
- 7:50he's going into semis with
- 7:52a clean bill of health right now.
- 7:53Yeah.
- 7:54It's,
- 7:55it's shocking at this level that to
- 7:57not have something that's nagging.
- 7:59I mean,
- 8:01that's not to say I haven't had
- 8:02injuries throughout the year.
- 8:02Like I had a bad shoulder
- 8:04injury right after
- 8:05Wadapalooza and that took a
- 8:06while to clear up.
- 8:08Even going into the open, I wasn't great,
- 8:12but yeah, it's, it's good now.
- 8:15So feeling good.
- 8:16Noticing a trend with
- 8:17Wadapalooza and injury.
- 8:21Yeah.
- 8:21Maybe that's one you should
- 8:22take off the list.
- 8:24But it's so fun.
- 8:25That was so fun.
- 8:27And then we go for a cruise after.
- 8:29It's just such a good trip.
- 8:32So I want to get into both
- 8:33of those things.
- 8:35We've talked about it in the
- 8:36past about doing every one
- 8:38of the big three in the offseason.
- 8:40You're one of the few people
- 8:41that have done that in the past.
- 8:44At one time we talked and you said,
- 8:46you're not sure you're ever
- 8:47going to do that again.
- 8:47And then this year you do it again.
- 8:51Yeah,
- 8:51I think this year was the only year
- 8:52that I did all three.
- 8:54I would argue two years ago
- 8:57you did all three.
- 8:58Did I?
- 9:00Geez.
- 9:03Yeah, not the plan this year.
- 9:06Okay.
- 9:07Well,
- 9:08now I know why you did it again
- 9:09because you forgot you did
- 9:10it two years ago.
- 9:11I did forget.
- 9:12Yeah.
- 9:14Yeah,
- 9:15because we actually we had a
- 9:16conversation about it and you said,
- 9:17I'm not doing that again.
- 9:18And then here we are two
- 9:20years later and you did it again.
- 9:22Wow.
- 9:23OK, well, I won't do it again now.
- 9:27So.
- 9:29So you have a perspective of
- 9:30hitting all three.
- 9:32What do each one have that
- 9:34the other ones don't that
- 9:36make it worth going to?
- 9:38I think, like I said,
- 9:38Wadapalooza is just super fun.
- 9:42It's probably like the most chill,
- 9:43the most like party kind of atmosphere.
- 9:46And it's warm in Florida in January.
- 9:49It's a great time to leave Canada.
- 9:52Yeah, that one's just all about more fun,
- 9:55I would say.
- 9:55And then Rogue is just great
- 9:58because it's such high level.
- 9:59You know,
- 10:00it's always the top people from
- 10:01the games.
- 10:03Um, for me,
- 10:04it's a really good challenge
- 10:05because usually it's quite
- 10:06heavy and like more strong
- 10:07men kind of stuff.
- 10:09Um,
- 10:10and they also treat the athletes great.
- 10:11Like they pay our way.
- 10:13They put us up.
- 10:14Um, yeah,
- 10:15we're really treated really well
- 10:16at Rogue.
- 10:17So that's a special experience.
- 10:19And then Dubai is just cool.
- 10:21It's Dubai.
- 10:22Like Dubai is so cool.
- 10:23Such a cool city to be.
- 10:25And, um, again, it's warm in December.
- 10:27Yeah.
- 10:28Yeah.
- 10:29And it's just cool.
- 10:30Like there's no other
- 10:31opportunity probably that I
- 10:33would go to Dubai.
- 10:34Um, so yeah, it's a good opportunity also.
- 10:38So you always,
- 10:40you seem to piggyback
- 10:43vacations or holidays with
- 10:46these competitions.
- 10:47And I, I've seen on your Instagram,
- 10:49you did a cruise after Waterpalooza.
- 10:51Did you do anything after
- 10:52the other events?
- 10:54So Dubai,
- 10:55last year we went to Germany on
- 10:56our way back.
- 10:56This year we had to come
- 10:58straight home because we
- 10:58had to go to work.
- 11:01And then after Rogue, oh,
- 11:04we also did a cruise.
- 11:07So yeah, we had a riot.
- 11:09We had a blast on that cruise.
- 11:11And I think it's just, one,
- 11:13we work full-time jobs.
- 11:14So if we have the vacation
- 11:15off to go there anyways,
- 11:17we just tack on a few extra days.
- 11:19Um, that works out.
- 11:20And then I take the week off
- 11:21after I compete anyways.
- 11:23So it's fun to just travel
- 11:24and just not be sitting at
- 11:26home for that week.
- 11:28So I've never been on a cruise.
- 11:29You did too last year when
- 11:32you went to rogue,
- 11:32did you go somewhere other,
- 11:34did you do a cruise out of
- 11:35Texas or did you go somewhere else first?
- 11:37No, we flew back to LA, which was almost,
- 11:39yeah,
- 11:40halfway home and then went out to LA.
- 11:42It was actually,
- 11:43we booked that cruise after
- 11:44the games and we actually
- 11:45missed it because we missed our flight.
- 11:48So yeah,
- 11:49we um thank goodness for
- 11:51american express we got got
- 11:53our refund and then booked
- 11:54it after rogue cool so
- 11:59where did that one so where
- 12:00did the two cruises go that
- 12:02one was like la mexico
- 12:05catalina island just around
- 12:06there and then the one
- 12:08after guadalupalooza is to
- 12:10bahamas and back okay and
- 12:12the private island stuff yeah super fun
- 12:15Awesome.
- 12:17And do you need that after
- 12:19competitions to just kind of rejuvenate?
- 12:22Yeah.
- 12:23I mean, I don't need, I'll say I need it.
- 12:26I don't need it, but I like it.
- 12:30It's just nice to have some downtime,
- 12:31especially because Kyle and
- 12:33I are going through everything together.
- 12:34He's my coach as well as my husband.
- 12:37So it's nice for us to just chill out.
- 12:41Yeah.
- 12:41Still my favorite story is
- 12:43when you guys had an
- 12:44interaction as coach
- 12:45athlete and he was writing
- 12:47the apology as husband
- 12:49while you were on the competition floor.
- 12:51Yeah.
- 12:54Sometimes it's like that.
- 12:55Yeah.
- 12:57Um, wide zombie jumps in with,
- 12:59are you excited to have go
- 13:01rock sponsoring the games?
- 13:02Yeah, of course.
- 13:03So when I signed with them was last year,
- 13:06around this time, maybe a bit earlier.
- 13:08I had no idea.
- 13:10I don't know if they,
- 13:11if it was in the works then or whatever,
- 13:13but I had no idea that they
- 13:15were going to be sponsoring the game.
- 13:17So when that happened, I was like, oh,
- 13:20cool.
- 13:20It's like,
- 13:21not like it's the brand that's
- 13:24going forward,
- 13:24but it's like kind of cool
- 13:26to be a part of that.
- 13:28Did you have a talk with
- 13:29their newest athlete that
- 13:30this is your house?
- 13:32I did not yet.
- 13:33Yeah.
- 13:34I'm the OG.
- 13:36No, it's super cool.
- 13:37I mean,
- 13:38of course Tia brings so much to the
- 13:41table.
- 13:41So yeah,
- 13:42it's cool that like the two
- 13:44athletes are me and her.
- 13:46Yeah.
- 13:46But does she have to always
- 13:48go with the sponsor of the games?
- 13:50Apparently she does.
- 13:53Man.
- 13:54Give other people some dude.
- 13:56Yeah.
- 13:59Now, I think that's really cool.
- 14:00And you've talked about how
- 14:02cool they are with you and
- 14:03that you've actually had
- 14:05input into the design of
- 14:07some of the shoes and stuff like that.
- 14:09Yeah.
- 14:11Yeah,
- 14:11so they've – and they're super receptive.
- 14:13So, like,
- 14:13when their first trainer came out,
- 14:16there was a couple of
- 14:16things that I really didn't
- 14:17like about it.
- 14:18Like, my heel was slipping out.
- 14:20And so I told them that,
- 14:20and they fixed it right away.
- 14:22And now their trainer is, like, amazing.
- 14:24So their runners are great too, so –
- 14:27Hopefully we can do the same
- 14:28with their clothing.
- 14:30How many pairs do you have?
- 14:36Too many.
- 14:38The closet is full.
- 14:41Yeah.
- 14:42And was last year at semis
- 14:43the first time you got to
- 14:44like sport them?
- 14:46Yeah.
- 14:47So it's been a year.
- 14:48Yeah.
- 14:49That's really cool.
- 14:51Mm-hmm.
- 14:52And then I've seen their clothes.
- 14:55They've always been a major part at Rogue.
- 14:59And the one year I volunteered down there,
- 15:01I sat right outside their booth.
- 15:03Their stuff is really cool.
- 15:05Really well made.
- 15:06Yeah, their stuff,
- 15:08I like it because it's kind of like...
- 15:12I don't know how to say like
- 15:12kind of grindy, kind of like military,
- 15:16like hard ass, like that kind of stuff,
- 15:19which is really good.
- 15:20We're just,
- 15:21I think they're going to
- 15:24continue working on the woman's line.
- 15:28And I think because a lot of girls,
- 15:30they like color and they
- 15:31don't want to be like dark all the time.
- 15:33And that was one of the main
- 15:35things last year.
- 15:36I was like, okay,
- 15:37like you got to have pink.
- 15:39You got to have some pink somewhere.
- 15:40So then they came out with
- 15:41that like bright pink backpack,
- 15:43which Kyle was sporting
- 15:45throughout the games, which was great.
- 15:47I love it.
- 15:48Yeah,
- 15:49we captured that in some of our
- 15:51footage and stuff.
- 15:55Yeah, he was easy to find.
- 15:56Yeah.
- 15:58Yeah.
- 15:59Um, Greg Pasley says, uh,
- 16:02go rock makes an excellent product.
- 16:05Several people, uh, wide zombie.
- 16:07Emily is my favorite.
- 16:09Oh, uh, Barry.
- 16:10Emily is my favorite too.
- 16:11Uh, so yeah,
- 16:16lots of people cheering you on
- 16:17in the chat.
- 16:18So, so now you have a,
- 16:21it seemed a much shorter
- 16:23time from quarterfinals to semis.
- 16:25Um,
- 16:26does training have to change this year?
- 16:28Do you have this Kyle have to like,
- 16:30actually, um,
- 16:31you can't use the template
- 16:32from last year because it's
- 16:33just different timing.
- 16:36Yeah, I mean,
- 16:39we're just continuing how
- 16:40we're going because I felt
- 16:41great going into quarterfinals.
- 16:42Quarterfinals went fine, went well.
- 16:46We're just continuing what
- 16:47we're doing because it
- 16:48works and I feel good.
- 16:50So I'm actually pleased
- 16:52semifinals are closer.
- 16:53Like I don't need another
- 16:55two months of training before semifinals.
- 16:56Like I want to go.
- 16:59And we talked about like
- 17:01when I said how you feel,
- 17:02you said you've changed
- 17:05some things and your
- 17:06fitness is high as well as your strength.
- 17:10So it's a well-known fact.
- 17:12Your whole has always been strength.
- 17:15Right.
- 17:16How much time do you spend
- 17:18on improving that?
- 17:20A lot.
- 17:22Like that's like my top energy.
- 17:25And you'll ask any athlete,
- 17:28like your weakness,
- 17:29that's what you have to work on, right?
- 17:30Like I don't go for runs ever.
- 17:33Like, I never run.
- 17:34My last big run was, I guess, Rogue,
- 17:37and then the 5K at the Games.
- 17:39And my next big run will
- 17:40probably be if we run at the Games.
- 17:41Like, I don't run.
- 17:45So, yeah, I think a lot of strength,
- 17:48a lot of, like,
- 17:50power output kind of things
- 17:52we've been doing this year,
- 17:52which really seem to have helped.
- 17:55Um,
- 17:56and I think like it shows that workout
- 17:57floor on the quarterfinals,
- 17:59like I'm closing that gap slowly,
- 18:01which is, that's all I can,
- 18:03I can ask for.
- 18:04So that's encouraging.
- 18:07And mentally, when you're looking at that,
- 18:09like you're never going to
- 18:11lift like Danny Spiegel.
- 18:12No.
- 18:13Right.
- 18:13Right.
- 18:13You're just trying to get to
- 18:14a point where it doesn't
- 18:16hurt you on the weekend.
- 18:18Yeah, exactly.
- 18:19Like I said,
- 18:20like we're just trying to close that gap.
- 18:23Yeah.
- 18:23Yeah.
- 18:23it's funny because like a
- 18:25few years ago I go to Christy Aramo,
- 18:27Connell's gym and I watched
- 18:29her like that was all she did.
- 18:31Like strength cycle after
- 18:33strength cycle after strengths.
- 18:35And she was just trying to
- 18:35get to mid pack.
- 18:37Yeah.
- 18:38Like that, that was it.
- 18:39Is that the same approach
- 18:40that you're taking?
- 18:42Yeah.
- 18:42And I think, um, yeah, pretty much.
- 18:47Um,
- 18:48Like I say,
- 18:49we've been doing a lot of like
- 18:49power things.
- 18:51Strength wise, I'm not terrible.
- 18:55It's more the power output,
- 18:56which we've really been focusing on.
- 18:58And that seems to help not
- 19:00only in that area,
- 19:01but in other areas in CrossFit too.
- 19:04So it's good.
- 19:07So I'm going to pull something up.
- 19:10At Rogue,
- 19:10you seem to be working on the
- 19:12strength or something in that manner.
- 19:14This made me just how
- 19:16because it seems so out of
- 19:17character for you.
- 19:19But your little promo video.
- 19:22I forgot about that.
- 19:29It just seems so out of character for you.
- 19:31And I just laughed and I had
- 19:33to bring it up somehow through this.
- 19:35It's a pretty good double bicep flex,
- 19:36though.
- 19:37It definitely is.
- 19:39And it shows that you've
- 19:40been working on some strength for sure.
- 19:43Yeah.
- 19:44And I think,
- 19:44especially after my arm injury,
- 19:46like I had to rebuild all
- 19:47that up and at the time it wasn't fun,
- 19:49but now I'm like reaping
- 19:51the rewards from that.
- 19:52Like I'm way stronger than I was before.
- 19:54I'm just focusing on those little things.
- 19:56So that's fun too.
- 19:58But yeah, that, that at Rogue,
- 20:01you're like in a green room
- 20:02and they're like, Hey, do something.
- 20:03And you're like, yeah,
- 20:05And if you don't have a plan
- 20:06or remember what you think
- 20:08you were going to do,
- 20:09you just kind of... I don't know.
- 20:12Throw up the peace sign or do a flex.
- 20:16The flex looks awesome.
- 20:18And the way they slow-mode it,
- 20:20it made it even cooler.
- 20:23And Rogue is so awesome at that stuff.
- 20:25Yeah.
- 20:26They're very professional.
- 20:27They always make the athletes look good.
- 20:30So...
- 20:34So when you do all those
- 20:36off-season competitions,
- 20:38how much of that is a
- 20:39learning process and an
- 20:41experiment process?
- 20:43Oh, a ton.
- 20:44That's,
- 20:45that's kind of when the time is to
- 20:46do it because you don't
- 20:48really want to be
- 20:49experimenting when you're
- 20:50trying to make the games.
- 20:52And obviously you train all
- 20:54year to peak at the games.
- 20:55So that's like,
- 20:57unfortunately you do
- 20:58experience a lot and
- 21:00experiment a lot at the games, but yeah,
- 21:02the off season is when you
- 21:03want to try new things and
- 21:05see what's been working and
- 21:06see what hasn't and yeah,
- 21:08all that kind of stuff.
- 21:09And I learn a ton every time.
- 21:11Like there's always so many
- 21:13things to take away that we
- 21:15put back into training.
- 21:17So that in that way,
- 21:18it's really beneficial.
- 21:20So for you,
- 21:20like rogue is important because
- 21:23that is experiencing and
- 21:24experimenting with things
- 21:26that you're working on.
- 21:27Yeah.
- 21:29Yeah, exactly.
- 21:29It makes total sense.
- 21:31And they have the best swag
- 21:32bag in the business.
- 21:34Yeah.
- 21:36I still wear my cowboy boots
- 21:37that we got a few years ago.
- 21:42It's so funny because either
- 21:44people love that or they're like, yeah,
- 21:46I gave that away as soon as I got home.
- 21:48Oh, heck no.
- 21:50I went to a country concert
- 21:51like two weeks ago and rocked them.
- 21:53It was great.
- 21:54Like...
- 21:56that's where I was actually
- 21:57stationed when I because go
- 21:58ruck was there the the
- 22:00fitting for the hat and the
- 22:01boots and all that stuff
- 22:03was kind of in that one
- 22:04corner and uh I watched
- 22:06everybody come in and get
- 22:07fitted and it was so funny
- 22:09oh I bet like and then and
- 22:12then I worked media for the
- 22:13weekend for rogue just
- 22:15trying to learn stuff but
- 22:17for that day I was
- 22:18stationed in there and it
- 22:19was really really cool yeah
- 22:22so and then we talk about um
- 22:25I want to I have a question
- 22:26about dubai I watch it on
- 22:29tv or stream and it looks
- 22:31like there's nobody in the
- 22:32crowd yeah is it just is
- 22:35there nobody there or is it
- 22:36just bad camera angles so a
- 22:38bit of both so they do
- 22:39condense the crowd to like
- 22:41the end of the finish line
- 22:42like think if you're
- 22:43watching a hockey game like
- 22:45where the goal like that area and
- 22:48um so there's that and then
- 22:50there's also like the
- 22:52stadium they do it it's
- 22:53pretty big and you're right
- 22:55like the crowd isn't there
- 22:56like in the u.s not at all
- 22:59um and I think mostly
- 23:01because it's so far like
- 23:04people yeah it's it's far
- 23:06and it's expensive to get
- 23:07there so and and it's and
- 23:11it's crossfit isn't as big
- 23:13in the middle east or no okay
- 23:17Not for girls anyways.
- 23:18I think there's a lot more men that do it,
- 23:20but not women.
- 23:22Okay.
- 23:23Is there ever an uncomfortable feeling?
- 23:25Oh, yeah.
- 23:29Oh, yeah.
- 23:31So it wasn't this year.
- 23:32It was the year before we went.
- 23:34And our luggage got lost for
- 23:35like four days.
- 23:37So Kyle and I had no clothes.
- 23:39All I had was one pair of
- 23:40workout gear that I put in my carry-on.
- 23:42So I was just hand-washing
- 23:43that for a couple days
- 23:45until we got some stuff.
- 23:47And I remember we were
- 23:48walking home from one of
- 23:49the gyms that I was
- 23:50training at just like on the,
- 23:51on the road.
- 23:52And of course I'm in my
- 23:53workout gear and yeah, they,
- 23:56you get a lot of stairs.
- 23:59I mean, they're not used to seeing women.
- 24:03I guess you could say like scantily clad,
- 24:05like in shorts and a tank top,
- 24:06like they're not used to seeing that.
- 24:08Right.
- 24:08So of course people are going to scare.
- 24:11They're mostly covered there.
- 24:12Right.
- 24:12Like, Oh yeah.
- 24:14Yeah.
- 24:17that just seems odd to me,
- 24:19but I know that that's the
- 24:20culture and that that's
- 24:21just the way it is.
- 24:21But so then what a Palooza
- 24:23I've always called that the
- 24:25CrossFit family reunion,
- 24:28because it's just everybody
- 24:30who's in the space is there
- 24:31that weekend hanging out chatting.
- 24:36How hard is it to actually
- 24:37then go compete with kind
- 24:39of all of that going on?
- 24:40Or are you really good about
- 24:42putting your blinders on
- 24:43and just doing what you're there for?
- 24:46Yeah, I mean, like you say,
- 24:48I've heard from people like
- 24:49that's the most fun crowd to be at,
- 24:51like more fun than the games.
- 24:52People just love Wadapalooza.
- 24:55But yeah, for me, it's not hard to focus.
- 24:57Like when I'm competing, I'm competing.
- 24:59And I've been lucky the schedule,
- 25:02like usually it's two day indie,
- 25:03two day team.
- 25:04And this year I only did indie.
- 25:06So I compete two days and
- 25:07then I have two days to
- 25:08just hang out with people
- 25:09and do what I want after.
- 25:10Do you have sponsor
- 25:13obligations during that time or?
- 25:16Sometimes.
- 25:17Okay.
- 25:18Yeah.
- 25:18I had a few events lined up this year,
- 25:20but yeah, it makes it fun.
- 25:23Cause I, I,
- 25:25I think there's more sponsors
- 25:26at Wadapalooza than there
- 25:27are at the games.
- 25:28Yeah.
- 25:30And,
- 25:30and I know like I've talked to some
- 25:32athletes where they're busy
- 25:34on their off day as much,
- 25:36if not more than when they're competing.
- 25:38Oh yeah.
- 25:39Like some people just
- 25:39couldn't do teams because
- 25:41they had like meet and
- 25:42greets lined up all day.
- 25:43And it was like,
- 25:46It's insane.
- 25:48If they could just fix the weather.
- 25:50I know.
- 25:51The rain, like, man,
- 25:53it's so hit and miss with
- 25:54the... It's either super
- 25:56nice or it's torrential rain.
- 25:58Yeah.
- 25:59Two years ago, it was freezing cold.
- 26:02Was it?
- 26:03Well, not for Indy.
- 26:04By the time the weekend came for teams,
- 26:06like, it was...
- 26:08I didn't, I didn't have a jacket.
- 26:09Cause you know,
- 26:10coming from the North to Miami,
- 26:11you're like, I don't need that.
- 26:13And then it got down to 40, like,
- 26:17what's that?
- 26:17Like 10 Celsius for you.
- 26:20Yeah.
- 26:20That's cold.
- 26:21Yeah.
- 26:23It was really, really cold,
- 26:25but you had injured your
- 26:26calf and like withdrawn from the team.
- 26:28So I don't know if you were, Oh,
- 26:30it was that year.
- 26:31Okay.
- 26:31Yeah.
- 26:32I was still around limping around.
- 26:37Yeah, if they could just fix the weather,
- 26:40that would be epic every year.
- 26:42Yeah.
- 26:45So now you're going to semis
- 26:47at one of the most iconic
- 26:49locations in CrossFit history.
- 26:52You never got to compete at
- 26:54the games in California.
- 26:57So how excited are you to
- 26:58compete at the tennis
- 26:59stadium where CrossFit was
- 27:03kind of birthed?
- 27:04Yeah,
- 27:05when I saw that it was going to be in
- 27:07Carson at the tennis stadium,
- 27:09when did they announce that?
- 27:09Like, way back in November or something.
- 27:11I was stoked.
- 27:13I was like, man,
- 27:13this is going to be so cool.
- 27:15Like, as you say,
- 27:16I think the last games
- 27:17there were maybe 2016?
- 27:18I don't know.
- 27:20I was barely into CrossFit then.
- 27:23I didn't make regionals until 2017.
- 27:25So...
- 27:29didn't really watch I
- 27:30remember it playing um on
- 27:32on the tv at the global gym
- 27:34I was going to um and I
- 27:36remember like looking a bit
- 27:37but like not wasn't even
- 27:39like in it by then and then
- 27:41um yeah looking back I see
- 27:43all this stuff and I'm like
- 27:44wow like yeah I'm super
- 27:46excited it's gonna be so
- 27:47cool I love I love
- 27:48competing outside I love
- 27:49that added element so
- 27:51that's really cool too
- 27:55So you said when you started CrossFit,
- 27:57you weren't really watching it.
- 28:00No.
- 28:00How fast did it take you to
- 28:02dive into all of the stuff?
- 28:06Very quick.
- 28:07As they say, I drank the Kool-Aid.
- 28:08Yeah.
- 28:11Yeah.
- 28:11I remember seeing it on TV.
- 28:12Someone at the gym was like, oh,
- 28:13you should do that.
- 28:14I was like, no, whatever, ignored it.
- 28:16And then, yeah,
- 28:18once I actually did a class or two,
- 28:20I was like, well, this is, I'm in it.
- 28:22Yeah.
- 28:24Yeah.
- 28:24I, I started in CrossFit in 2011,
- 28:27had no clue what the games were.
- 28:28And then in the games came around in 2012,
- 28:32like I was hook, line and sinker.
- 28:34Yeah.
- 28:35I think most people are like that.
- 28:39Like you just get,
- 28:40it's so addicting to like
- 28:43keep getting better,
- 28:44keep learning new skills.
- 28:47Yeah.
- 28:47It's just super fun.
- 28:49when I'm,
- 28:49and imagine when you first
- 28:50started in a class,
- 28:52every day is a competition, right?
- 28:53You're, you're new to it.
- 28:54You're competing with the class.
- 28:56You're trying to do as well
- 28:56as everybody else, you know?
- 28:58Right.
- 28:59And then coming in from like
- 29:00a background of gymnastics,
- 29:02track and field,
- 29:04like I knew how to weightlift.
- 29:05Like it was just,
- 29:07everyone likes doing things
- 29:08they're good at.
- 29:10Right.
- 29:10So you come in,
- 29:11you're already pretty good.
- 29:12People are like, Oh,
- 29:13it's like the open next month.
- 29:15Like, okay, sign me up, I guess.
- 29:18Yeah.
- 29:19For me,
- 29:20it was trying to master new skills.
- 29:22Even though some of the
- 29:23stuff I was okay at, I mean,
- 29:25I started at 500 pounds,
- 29:26so it was a different story than you,
- 29:28but learning how to master
- 29:32those skills over time is
- 29:33what kept bringing me back.
- 29:35I mean,
- 29:35I was a competitive swimmer in high
- 29:37school and college,
- 29:39and to get that competitive
- 29:41spirit back was everything to me.
- 29:45yeah I was the same like
- 29:47when yeah it felt like I
- 29:48was back in gymnastics
- 29:49competing so I can't
- 29:51imagine coming in fresh
- 29:53though without any
- 29:54weightlifting background or
- 29:56like never having done
- 29:58gymnastics like the people
- 30:00that come in from that
- 30:03that's pretty impressive
- 30:04like that must be so
- 30:05overwhelming to learn all
- 30:07that like I can't even imagine
- 30:09Yeah.
- 30:10So I, I mean,
- 30:11I did have some lifting background.
- 30:12It was more power lifting lifting.
- 30:15And I did, I was very athletic as a kid.
- 30:18I had a sport in every season and,
- 30:20and I actually flirted with
- 30:22gymnastic stuff just for fun.
- 30:24Okay.
- 30:25Like doing flips and stuff.
- 30:27So I,
- 30:29some of that muscle memory came back.
- 30:31Right.
- 30:33But I ask you,
- 30:34then you go to becoming a pro athlete.
- 30:37And a lot of times you're
- 30:37working out by yourself.
- 30:40So are you addicted to competition?
- 30:42And is that one of the
- 30:43reasons you keep signing up for Rogue,
- 30:47Dubai, Wadapalooza?
- 30:50I never really thought about that,
- 30:52to be honest.
- 30:54That's a thought.
- 30:56I don't think, I love competing,
- 30:58obviously.
- 31:00And yeah,
- 31:01like most days I'm down grinding
- 31:03in my dark garage alone.
- 31:05Like, that's no fun.
- 31:10But I was thinking the other day,
- 31:11like it makes you train so hard.
- 31:13If you,
- 31:14if you can push yourself through it,
- 31:16you train so hard because, you know,
- 31:18Kyle's making these
- 31:20interval split times and
- 31:22these goal times and goal
- 31:23reps and like things that I
- 31:25need to hit in the workouts.
- 31:27And I'm just killing myself
- 31:28to make those times.
- 31:33And I think if I had someone beside me,
- 31:36I would be a lot more, Oh,
- 31:37just stay ahead of them or
- 31:39just race them.
- 31:40And you kind of don't go to
- 31:42your full potential.
- 31:43Whereas when I'm racing the machine,
- 31:46what it says on the concept to machine,
- 31:48or I'm racing the clock, like there's no,
- 31:52you know what I mean?
- 31:52Like you just push so much harder.
- 31:56So I feel like if you can
- 31:58put your head down and be like, yeah,
- 32:01it's not as fun.
- 32:01Cause I'm not laughing and
- 32:02joking with someone and you know,
- 32:05Um, but if you can push through that,
- 32:08like I think training's actually better.
- 32:12So I can relate to that
- 32:13because in swimming, everything's,
- 32:15everything's intervals.
- 32:17Yeah.
- 32:18Like everything.
- 32:19And you're not,
- 32:19you're not swinging against
- 32:21one-on-one against anybody.
- 32:22There's like six people in a
- 32:23lane trying to keep that
- 32:25same interval going.
- 32:26Right.
- 32:26Right.
- 32:27And so it's not a competition.
- 32:28Then when the meat comes,
- 32:30like then I'm in a zone.
- 32:31Cause like now I get to
- 32:33release all that competitive.
- 32:35This and that meat.
- 32:37Yeah.
- 32:37I'm just curious if that was
- 32:39the same for you,
- 32:39like with water Palooza and.
- 32:43Yeah.
- 32:44I guess in a way it's,
- 32:45it's way more fun to
- 32:46there's 10 other girls.
- 32:48Now we get to race.
- 32:49Like that's way more fun than, you know,
- 32:52trying to hit these times
- 32:54that Kyle set out for me
- 32:55that are really tough, you know?
- 32:57So yeah, I guess so a little bit.
- 33:01And, and your fun,
- 33:02we've talked about this
- 33:03before is you're like one
- 33:05of the nicest people ever
- 33:07when you're just kind of hanging out,
- 33:09coming off the competition floor and,
- 33:12You give this look like I'm
- 33:14going to freaking kill you.
- 33:17Coming off or going on?
- 33:19Probably both.
- 33:20I just don't have access to coming on.
- 33:22Okay.
- 33:22That looks worse.
- 33:28And I interview a lot of
- 33:29people after events.
- 33:31Very few of them scare me like you do.
- 33:34Sorry.
- 33:36I wasn't aware of that, Scott.
- 33:37I'll work on that.
- 33:39I mean, I pushed through.
- 33:40I pushed through for the interview.
- 33:41But man,
- 33:44it's hard for me to remember the
- 33:45questions because you give
- 33:46the death stare.
- 33:48Yeah, I guess just, yeah, in the zone.
- 33:52And I can't imagine Kyle
- 33:54getting on the wrong side of you.
- 33:57Yeah.
- 33:59You should ask him.
- 34:03Jake Chapman asks,
- 34:05is Emily coming to rogue?
- 34:07I would love to.
- 34:08We'll see.
- 34:09Usually they do invites after the game.
- 34:12So yeah.
- 34:15Come in the top 10,
- 34:1715 of the games usually
- 34:18have a pretty good shot
- 34:20unless they decide to do it
- 34:21differently this year.
- 34:21I don't know, but Scotland's pretty cool.
- 34:25Jake's in Europe,
- 34:27so that's what I'm asking.
- 34:29They're excited that Rogue
- 34:30is coming there.
- 34:33Kyle B and Carson?
- 34:36Of course he will be.
- 34:38Pink Backpack?
- 34:41Pink Backpack and all, yeah.
- 34:43You can only buy him one year, though,
- 34:44because I don't know if we
- 34:47told you this story.
- 34:48There was a competition here
- 34:50called Canwest Games.
- 34:52And he coached me,
- 34:54but it was like a hot weekend.
- 34:56It was super hot.
- 34:57There was a beer garden at
- 34:59the competition.
- 35:00And you know how you have a
- 35:01lot of time in between events, whatever.
- 35:03He would just disappear.
- 35:04And, you know,
- 35:05we had friends there and whatever.
- 35:07And then he'd come back and
- 35:07I didn't really think anything of it.
- 35:09And then I realized he was just hammered.
- 35:13And when he was coaching me and I was like,
- 35:14what is wrong with him?
- 35:16And
- 35:17Yeah, never again.
- 35:18But I won.
- 35:19I won the competition.
- 35:20So that's his saving grace.
- 35:22He's like, oh,
- 35:22I still coach you to the W. But yeah,
- 35:27not again.
- 35:29That sounds like a fun time with Kyle.
- 35:33Kyle's always a fun time.
- 35:37Wadzomi says Canwest was the
- 35:39one with the big prize money, right?
- 35:40Yeah, the one that fell through.
- 35:41But this was before it fell through.
- 35:44So this was like 2017 or something.
- 35:462018 I think yeah it was
- 35:49actually around for a long
- 35:50time before the big fiasco
- 35:52it was and it was a great
- 35:53competition I mean when I
- 35:54won the prize money was
- 35:55three thousand dollars so
- 35:57it was a lot less than what
- 35:58they promised a few years
- 35:59ago um but yeah it was
- 36:01really really a good
- 36:03competition when it was
- 36:05going there for a few years
- 36:08a wad zombie said he's a
- 36:09big dude he can do two beers
- 36:14And then Jake says,
- 36:15isn't he English or Canadian?
- 36:20Yeah, he is from the UK.
- 36:22So yeah,
- 36:24I know you guys can put away
- 36:25alcohol like no other.
- 36:29So, um, wow, that got us derailed.
- 36:31So
- 36:35So I wanted to ask you this, too,
- 36:37about quarterfinals.
- 36:38With the reduction in from 60 to 40,
- 36:43did that enter your mind at all,
- 36:45or was it just, I'm good enough,
- 36:47I don't have to worry about that?
- 36:49Yeah, it was,
- 36:50I'm going to make it through.
- 36:51Wasn't worried.
- 36:52I actually like that they cut people.
- 36:54Sounds savage, but yeah.
- 36:57I would rather they cut it to 30,
- 36:59to be honest.
- 36:59But yeah, so when that was announced,
- 37:03I was like, sweet, that's good.
- 37:05Um,
- 37:06I would say the only concern was just
- 37:08like, I remember saying to Kyle, okay,
- 37:09like we can't afford, you know,
- 37:12a large penalty or, you know,
- 37:14screwing up my video or like,
- 37:16we just have to make sure
- 37:17we're doing everything, um,
- 37:20the way it's meant to be done.
- 37:22Just like take care in the small things.
- 37:26So when we went up to 60 a
- 37:28couple years ago, the thought was, boy,
- 37:31it's going to be tough
- 37:31because if you do really bad in one event,
- 37:35a 60-place finish would be
- 37:37hard to come back from.
- 37:39Yeah.
- 37:40I mean, we saw Sydney do it.
- 37:43We did.
- 37:46Last year was such a weird,
- 37:48weird programmed year.
- 37:51it had all these like traps
- 37:53that people couldn't get past.
- 37:54Yeah.
- 37:55And so a lot of people had bad scores.
- 37:57Yeah.
- 37:58There was a lot.
- 37:59Like if you look at the
- 38:00people who made the games, people,
- 38:02there were very few
- 38:03consistent all the way through people.
- 38:06Like people were like
- 38:06bouncing all the way around
- 38:09in the events.
- 38:11Um, so yeah,
- 38:13who knows what this year will bring.
- 38:14So, um,
- 38:18Is the 40... Are you excited
- 38:20about the 40 because it
- 38:21kind of has a safetiness to it where,
- 38:24well, you can't fall too far?
- 38:26I think just it takes away
- 38:28some of the outliers.
- 38:30You know,
- 38:31the people that can make it
- 38:33because they're really good at one thing,
- 38:35but they can't do other things.
- 38:36Or, you know, like 40 to 60,
- 38:38a lot of those people, you know,
- 38:41they're just super strong,
- 38:42but they're not fit at all.
- 38:43Or, you know, they have other good things.
- 38:46And I think it just...
- 38:49I don't want to say get in the way,
- 38:51but they can kind of skew
- 38:52the leaderboard in some events.
- 38:53So yeah,
- 38:55it's just good to get rid of that.
- 38:58Yeah.
- 38:59I like what you're saying.
- 39:00I hate that we don't get to
- 39:03know more athletes.
- 39:05Yeah, so as an athlete that competes,
- 39:08I don't want to say I don't care, but,
- 39:10like, that's my thought on it.
- 39:12But I understand, like, you know,
- 39:14those athletes that are just over the 40,
- 39:18you know, what do they have?
- 39:19They're so close to semifinals,
- 39:21but they just can't get out
- 39:22of the virtual, like, the online,
- 39:25you know.
- 39:26So, like, for that, you know, really,
- 39:2840 to 100, like,
- 39:29they're still good athletes.
- 39:31It's just tough to make semifinals, so...
- 39:34you know,
- 39:35it would be cool if they had like a tier,
- 39:37you know, semifinal one,
- 39:38semifinal two or something
- 39:40like that would be cool.
- 39:41So they can just, cause people, you know,
- 39:44so many people thrive
- 39:45competing live and aren't
- 39:47good online or the opposite, you know?
- 39:49So it'd be nice to give those,
- 39:50those athletes an opportunity.
- 39:53Yeah.
- 39:54I've been, you know,
- 39:55I was on coffee pods and
- 39:56wads yesterday for their game show.
- 39:59And one of the things is how
- 40:00do we attract more people
- 40:01to North America semis?
- 40:03And I was thinking like,
- 40:05wouldn't it be cool to have
- 40:06like an event right before the event?
- 40:08Like the 20 that didn't make it in,
- 40:12you get like these three
- 40:13workouts and the number, whoever wins it,
- 40:16it's a wild card into semis
- 40:18or that'd be fun.
- 40:20just something to like bring
- 40:21more people there and
- 40:23something dramatic to do
- 40:26right before the event yeah
- 40:27that'd be cool I mean they
- 40:29have the event or I mean
- 40:31okay so they have to set up
- 40:32an extra day early or
- 40:33something but they have
- 40:34everything there it's
- 40:35already all the equipment's
- 40:36there like you know the
- 40:38people are there it's easy
- 40:41to add on really
- 40:42you don't have to stream it.
- 40:44You just let people come watch,
- 40:45set it up in the Plaza or the, you know,
- 40:49whatever.
- 40:49Um, and they get in,
- 40:52but they're kind of at a
- 40:53disadvantage because they
- 40:54just did three workouts,
- 40:56but they get a shot.
- 40:57Yeah.
- 40:57Cool.
- 40:58I like it.
- 41:00Just something I've been
- 41:01like flipping around in my
- 41:02head since the game show yesterday.
- 41:04So, um,
- 41:06So yeah.
- 41:07So the other thing that the
- 41:09reduction 40 does is if you
- 41:11guys get 10 in again this year,
- 41:1325% of the field go to the games.
- 41:17Yeah.
- 41:17That's high.
- 41:19I mean,
- 41:19I don't know if we're getting 10
- 41:20this year, but right.
- 41:22Probably a bit less, but yeah, that's,
- 41:27that's a big,
- 41:30that's a big chance you get
- 41:31really when you only had to
- 41:32pass the online portion.
- 41:33I get what you're saying there.
- 41:35Yeah.
- 41:35Yeah.
- 41:39I like the old regional
- 41:40format where three or five got in,
- 41:46but it was just your region.
- 41:47But it was 40 went, right?
- 41:4940 people?
- 41:51Yeah.
- 41:51The last few years, I went to sanctionals.
- 41:59And I think there were 30
- 42:00and I won and I made the games.
- 42:02And then the online games,
- 42:04I was top five out of, I think 40.
- 42:07And then 2022,
- 42:09I was top five out of 30 again.
- 42:13Last year I was top 10 out of 60.
- 42:17Like it's,
- 42:17I feel like every year that I've
- 42:19qualified,
- 42:20it's been a different scenario.
- 42:22Yeah.
- 42:23Yeah.
- 42:24So, I mean, that gives me confidence.
- 42:25It's like, okay, whatever it was,
- 42:27like I somehow jumped through the hoops.
- 42:30And got it done.
- 42:31You can file a heart attack
- 42:33as well as your fans.
- 42:34Yeah.
- 42:35But you always make it in.
- 42:37Standard.
- 42:42So what are you most looking
- 42:45forward to in Carson?
- 42:47I thought the programming
- 42:50for quarters was really good.
- 42:51I did too.
- 42:53I hope the set is also good like that.
- 42:56Like...
- 42:57Yeah, there was strength and skill,
- 42:58but it was like fitness.
- 43:00Yes.
- 43:01It's like why we all love CrossFit.
- 43:03Yeah.
- 43:05Do you think they'll
- 43:06continue that on for semis?
- 43:08I think somewhat.
- 43:09I mean, there's going to be change.
- 43:10It's going to be heavier.
- 43:11It's going to be harder skill, I'm sure.
- 43:13But I mean, you never know.
- 43:16I never try to predict what
- 43:18there's going to be.
- 43:19I don't want to say that's Kyle's job,
- 43:21but it's kind of his thing
- 43:23to make sure I'm kind of
- 43:24ready for everything come game time.
- 43:28yeah, whatever it is,
- 43:29you got to go out and do it anyways.
- 43:31So, yeah.
- 43:34So I'm going to,
- 43:34I'm going to finish with
- 43:35like two off questions.
- 43:37And that is,
- 43:39this has really been the year
- 43:40for women in sports.
- 43:42If you're following other women's sports,
- 43:44the women's NCAA tournament
- 43:46outrated the men's NCAA
- 43:49tournament for the first time in history.
- 43:54If you look at college NIL in the States,
- 43:56women are in the top 10 in
- 43:58NIL money with the men.
- 44:02How does it feel to be part
- 44:03of a sport that's always
- 44:05looked at women as equal?
- 44:10when you say it, it's like, wow,
- 44:12that's super cool.
- 44:13Like, but yeah, I mean,
- 44:18we're used to it because
- 44:20it's always been that way.
- 44:21So you never really think anything else,
- 44:23but yeah, you look at, I mean,
- 44:26basketball is huge right
- 44:27now with Caitlin Clark, but like,
- 44:30yeah,
- 44:30you look at what they're getting paid
- 44:31versus the men.
- 44:32And then I would say
- 44:33CrossFit's almost the opposite.
- 44:35Like,
- 44:37I remember my mom was telling me she
- 44:38was watching one of the
- 44:40comps just streamed.
- 44:42And, you know,
- 44:43they had the top 10 girls
- 44:45and the top 10 guys on the
- 44:47same floor competing together.
- 44:48And it was mostly watching the girls.
- 44:51And she was like, I wanted to see Pat.
- 44:53And I barely like it barely
- 44:54even showed Pat because it was all girls.
- 44:56And yeah,
- 44:56we're in sports bras and booty shorts.
- 44:58And maybe that that sells a little bit.
- 45:00But I think we're almost the opposite.
- 45:03Like people watch the girls
- 45:06more than the guys.
- 45:08I agree completely because
- 45:10and it's to me like.
- 45:13For the most part,
- 45:14the women are more
- 45:14approachable when I go to
- 45:15like talk to them or do a podcast.
- 45:19The men aren't as approachable.
- 45:21It's harder to get them on the show.
- 45:26And so my leaning is because
- 45:29I get to know you guys more
- 45:30than I get to know the men.
- 45:32So I want to watch because
- 45:34all the people I've gotten
- 45:34to know over the years are women.
- 45:37Right.
- 45:38Not all.
- 45:38I mean, there are exceptions, but.
- 45:40Yeah, it makes sense.
- 45:41If you know a person, you know their story,
- 45:43you know what they've gone through,
- 45:44like you're way more as a fan,
- 45:45you're way more invested in that person.
- 45:48Yeah.
- 45:49And so I just think it's cool.
- 45:51And I think it's this tide
- 45:53that's coming where women
- 45:55are doing as well as men in
- 45:56different things.
- 45:57And I think it's cool in
- 45:59college here in the States,
- 46:01name image likeness money,
- 46:03women are doing as well as the men.
- 46:05Yeah,
- 46:06and I think that's partly thanks to
- 46:10social media too.
- 46:12Yeah.
- 46:13But yeah, it's cool.
- 46:16So the last question I'm
- 46:17going to have for you is, again,
- 46:19Carolyn Prevost joined us
- 46:21on our Thursday night show.
- 46:22She takes a lot of pride in
- 46:24the fact that she's an
- 46:25athlete who's also a
- 46:27full-time employed worker.
- 46:30Right.
- 46:31You are as well.
- 46:32Mm-hmm.
- 46:33How much pride do you have
- 46:35that you're doing all of
- 46:37these amazing things and
- 46:39you're working a full-time job?
- 46:42Yeah.
- 46:42I mean, I think it's cool.
- 46:43And a lot of people, you know,
- 46:45I do get a lot of credit for it.
- 46:47Like people are always saying,
- 46:49and people forget like
- 46:49Carolyn does it too.
- 46:51I don't think she gets quite
- 46:52the hype that I get about it,
- 46:54but she's also doing it.
- 46:55She's working at, she's a teacher, right?
- 46:58Full-time.
- 46:58That's full-time.
- 46:59Yeah.
- 46:59So yeah.
- 47:02Again, I honestly think, you know,
- 47:04aside from some nights and, you know,
- 47:07I honestly think it helps my training.
- 47:11Like, I wouldn't be, you know,
- 47:14as soon as I wake up, like,
- 47:15going to the garage,
- 47:16doing a hard interval session.
- 47:17Like, if I didn't work that day,
- 47:18I wouldn't need to do that
- 47:20session and then get to the
- 47:21gym at a certain time and, like...
- 47:24I would waste so much more time.
- 47:26I think it's natural for humans.
- 47:29The more time you have,
- 47:30the more time you waste.
- 47:31As a result,
- 47:33my training is more productive.
- 47:35It's more intense.
- 47:37That's helping me as an athlete.
- 47:39Honestly, my job helps me.
- 47:43It's funny.
- 47:43Scott Tetlow said the same
- 47:44thing yesterday.
- 47:45He's active military.
- 47:46He has 90 minutes a day to
- 47:47get his work done.
- 47:53Right.
- 47:54And so he goes and he does that.
- 47:56And then if for some reason
- 47:57he gets a break,
- 47:58that's when he works on like his holes.
- 48:01Wow.
- 48:02That's a lot less time than I have.
- 48:04So I definitely a lot more
- 48:06training time than that,
- 48:07but good for him.
- 48:09That if he had more time,
- 48:10he doesn't think he'd be as efficient.
- 48:12No, you're not.
- 48:13Cause like, you know, you finish a workout,
- 48:15you're tired, you take a drink,
- 48:17you go on your phone for a bit, you know,
- 48:19you talk to other people,
- 48:20like you can waste so much time,
- 48:23but I'm like, okay, no,
- 48:24at two o'clock I need to be
- 48:26in the shower.
- 48:27So this piece takes 20 minutes.
- 48:29This take like,
- 48:29everything's mapped out to the T. Well,
- 48:33and at a competition, um,
- 48:35you're not,
- 48:35you don't get to choose when you can,
- 48:37when you work out or when you,
- 48:40I've done a few competitions,
- 48:42specifically the games last
- 48:43year when we had to have
- 48:44that condensed schedule for ESPN or SPN,
- 48:49the TV, whatever it was called.
- 48:50Yeah.
- 48:52And people were hurting, like,
- 48:54not to say I was just like, I'm fine.
- 48:56But, you know, I was used to it.
- 48:58I was like, Okay,
- 48:59this is how I train every day.
- 49:01Like,
- 49:01I don't need a long five hour break
- 49:04in between.
- 49:04And like, it's, it's,
- 49:06it's good to just like, prepare for that.
- 49:10Yeah.
- 49:12It's kind of funny.
- 49:13And I think Carolyn's the same way.
- 49:15Her lunch hour is one of her sessions.
- 49:17And then she doesn't get to
- 49:19choose when it is.
- 49:20It's when her schedule opens up.
- 49:23And it just makes you more
- 49:25flexible during competition time.
- 49:27And I think it's a byproduct
- 49:29of being a full-time employee.
- 49:30It is.
- 49:31And like, I noticed that all my days off,
- 49:34you know,
- 49:34sometimes I spend the whole day
- 49:36at the gym, but you know,
- 49:40I was half as productive as
- 49:41I was on my work day.
- 49:43You know, it's just like.
- 49:46When you go to the gym and
- 49:47you work out in your garage, what,
- 49:49what does the gym give you
- 49:51that the garage doesn't?
- 49:52Just high ceiling things.
- 49:54Rope climbs, muscle-ups.
- 49:57You know,
- 49:57I can do the little seated
- 49:58muscle-ups here,
- 49:59but bar muscle-ups I can't do here.
- 50:01I'll smoke my head on the roof.
- 50:04Just stuff like that.
- 50:07And then just... It's a good
- 50:09change of scenery.
- 50:10So I'll do one session here and...
- 50:13you know, there's, there's other people.
- 50:14We have our gyms like half boxing gym.
- 50:17So there's a bunch of people
- 50:18fighting in the back and yelling and,
- 50:21you know, it's just like some different.
- 50:24Wow.
- 50:24That's,
- 50:25we had one of those in Columbus and
- 50:27it closed half boxing, half CrossFit.
- 50:31Now it's just CrossFit and
- 50:32they moved out of that building,
- 50:34but that would be insane.
- 50:35Do you miss the gym if you
- 50:38can't get in there and you
- 50:39just have to do garage or vice versa?
- 50:43no because the next day I'll
- 50:44be at the gym like I'm
- 50:46still at the gym five days
- 50:47a week um the month after
- 50:50the games like I didn't
- 50:51think I i don't think I
- 50:52went to the gym all of
- 50:52august last year and then
- 50:54all of august the year
- 50:55before when I had my arm
- 50:56injury um so a little bit
- 50:59then and I think that's
- 51:00just the people I think you
- 51:01miss just being social
- 51:03that's just yeah social
- 51:05aspect do you ever miss the
- 51:06parking garage
- 51:10No, but sometimes I'll say to Kyle,
- 51:14I'm like, man, I was so hard.
- 51:17Like I remember that bar
- 51:20used to be ice cold some
- 51:22days and I would have to
- 51:23wear like I'd put on gloves
- 51:25and be squatting with like
- 51:26gloves on because the bar
- 51:27was so cold and like going
- 51:30outside before my night
- 51:31shift into the like, man, I was so tough.
- 51:36You've softened up over the years.
- 51:39Well now, I mean, the garage is in winter.
- 51:41It's still not warm,
- 51:42but then I think of that
- 51:45and comparatively and I'm like, Oh,
- 51:47I have a light here.
- 51:48I don't have cars driving by.
- 51:50Like I'm not half outside.
- 51:51Like it's pretty good.
- 51:53Sucking in the exhaust fumes.
- 51:56Yeah.
- 51:56Sucking in the fumes, wind coming in.
- 51:59You finally got all that
- 52:02cleared out of your system
- 52:03and that's why you're
- 52:03improving every year now.
- 52:05Yeah.
- 52:05It's like smoker's lung.
- 52:06I got rid of it.
- 52:09yeah uh wad zombie says I
- 52:14imagine canada just always
- 52:15being ice cold that's what
- 52:19yeah we we live in igloos
- 52:20pretty much I mean for
- 52:23salmon and yeah hunting and
- 52:26gather it's the hunting and
- 52:27gather lifestyle here

- 52:33it's been awesome having you on.

- 52:42So I have no idea like what's going on.

- 52:51But I heard you told,
- 52:53you told me via DM that you

- 52:59Assuming you were going to make it.

- 53:01Confident.
- 53:03Yeah.
- 53:03Kyle booked my flight.
- 53:05He was going to book it like way before,
- 53:08but I was like, just wait.
- 53:10And then, yeah,
- 53:11as soon as I finished quarterfinals,
- 53:13he just booked it.
- 53:14And then, like I say,
- 53:15and then all the penalties
- 53:16came out and I was like, but yeah.
- 53:21Well,
- 53:21you've learned that you have American
- 53:22express and like, if you need to refund.
