- 0:51of our listeners. Thanks so much for your support. I had to do
- 0:55a bit of detective work to figure out where this show should go. Oh
- 1:00it's It's listed as undated on the Radio Gold Index. However, given the
- 1:06number of shows made during the nineteen fifty two season, which should be seven,
- 1:14this fits most comfortably immediately following last week's show. So here's best we
- 1:19can tell. From July seventeenth, nineteen fifty two is A Laugh in Your
- 1:25Hands and the Truck Engine Murder. The National Broadcasting Company presents Earl Stanley Gardner's
- 1:33A Life in Your Hand with the car running? How did he die?
- 1:42Where was the buddy? Listen while we place A Life in your Hand.
- 1:53You never know when you step from the safety of your home when you may
- 1:59witness a land depth and be called upon to testify as to what you saw
- 2:02and heard. Murder is a dark enigma that strikes fear into the heart of
- 2:12man. Strange, baffling, mysterious, but the darkest crime. One man
- 2:17can invent, another man can unravel. Such a man is Jonathan Kegg,
- 2:22created by Earl Stanley Gardner, the world's most popular writer of mysteries, creator
- 2:27of Perry Mason, doug Selby and other outstanding character Good evening, mister,
- 2:39Kay, how are you fine? Thank you, William? And you have
- 2:44been damn you know how any I haven't seen you around the country, Willingly.
- 2:49I've been busy catching crooks heavy. No, I let the authorities catch
- 2:53name, William, That's their job. Don't mind hems kag. Just what
- 2:55do you do anyway? See your name in the papers on tamber where I
- 3:00don't quite get it. The Latin name for my work probably throws you a
- 3:05meekis curia friend of the court in that private eye. No. Indeed,
- 3:09in some cases of murder or larceny or whatever it is, I try to
- 3:14help the authorities find the guilty person through cross examination. Can you stay working
- 3:19at a job like that? There's more work than I'll ever get around to
- 3:22an act of violence comes suddenly, the witnesses aren't expecting it, so they
- 3:25fail to notice the tales. And if I show again, actor, if
- 3:29I bit, I can tell you one went an. You may have a
- 3:32chance to prove your powers of observation. Someday, William, you never know
- 3:37when you may be called upon to testify to an act of violence in which
- 3:40you have become involved quite innocently. Even now, somewhere in the city,
- 3:46there may be a crime in the making. Get out of my house,
- 3:53Laure get out. But listen to reason, will you. We used to
- 3:55be friends. I started you in the construction business. Yeah, you made
- 4:00the dough and I did the work. Now I'm squaring there's enough building going
- 4:03on in this country for both of us. Your bids are so low you're
- 4:06losing money. What's the idea, Okay, I'll give it a straight Larey.
- 4:12I'm going to run you out of business, that's the idea. I'll
- 4:14undercut every bid you make until you have to fold up. And that goes
- 4:17for the Tahoma River bridge too. You've never done a bridge job in your
- 4:21life. After the meeting in Humboldt tonight, I'll do one. I'm offering
- 4:25them a bridge for less than you'd take to build a house. You're through,
- 4:28Jack, washed up? All right? Teach you the business. I
- 4:30bring you up from a pub. I told you to get out. Go
- 4:32on, I'm leaving. Sure, might as well stay out of the bidding
- 4:38tonight. I'll be there, Clayton, I'll be at that meeting. Heave
- 4:41your boys at home. If you know what's healthy for you mean, there's
- 4:44busted nose. I know who paid those goons to rough me up last week.
- 4:48I wouldn't pay anybody. Oh no, we're pals. That's all I'm
- 4:54gonna take from you. Oh boy, listen, you're ruining my company.
- 5:00I've had to lay off man, my foreman, my best truck drivers.
- 5:03Now you're saying I had you beat up. You can't touch me as a
- 5:08businessman, your reputation. Don't push me too far. I'm warning you get
- 5:15out. I didn't tell you to come over here and cry. And you
- 5:30hear me. Tell him I heard you. That's the last to Jack Laray.
- 5:34You did a swell job. Bart. What's the matter with you?
- 5:38Larrey's tough. You know he's tough. You can't stand up to him like
- 5:42that and expect you. You're begging for trouble. Bars, I can take
- 5:45care of him. Look at you. If somebody hadn't come along, those
- 5:47men would have killed you. The other night, Bart, you told me
- 5:50so yourself. I was doing all right. I knocked out two of them.
- 5:55There were four. We're worrying about me. Kid. Jack Larrey hate
- 5:58you, Bart. I can't blame him. I'm reckon his company. He
- 6:00has reason to hate you. He did teach you the business. You were
- 6:03friends, and knowing you're sounds like you're on his side. I'm just trying
- 6:09to make you be careful. A man like Laray, when he knows he's
- 6:13been double crossed, really double crossed, he might do anything and think it
- 6:16was right. Okay, Okay, I don't want to hear any more about
- 6:18it. Don't bid on the Tahoma Bridge. Stay away from that meeting and
- 6:23humble tonight. Let him have the job. You don't need it. I
- 6:26need the work. I need work. So Jack Laray won't get it.
- 6:30I'm gonna smash him, hit him where it hurts his precious reputation, his
- 6:33company. Watch Bart, Clayton Gold Baby, your supper is ready, Go
- 6:40ahead and eat bighearted tonight. Huh, don't I have to wait around for
- 6:44your kid brother to show up? You might be late for the meeting and
- 6:47humbled, Yeah, hey at eight o'clock. Where is brother Joey boy?
- 6:53Anyway? I don't know you're gonna wait and meet with him? H our
- 6:58big happy family. I'm not hungry, Doris. When's Joe gonna move?
- 7:03Get out on his own. He's been hanging around here two years. Ever
- 7:05since he got out of college. He's been helping you with your works.
- 7:09That's what he thinks. Him and his engineering degree. Joe does it college
- 7:12style, and I go along behind him. Patch up when I can junk
- 7:15the rest. He's costing me money. I'm telling you, Doris, get
- 7:19that punk kid out of our house or so help me out. Hello,
- 7:27sis Hi, Joe, give me some more cough Supper's ready, Joe,
- 7:32Sit down, Joey Boy. Sisters waiting for you. I gotta wash up
- 7:36first. Here's a towel. Thanks, sis us things out on a job
- 7:44rain held us up. We may have to lay off tomorrow. So matter,
- 7:46didn't the professors let your work in the mud. No used to pay
- 7:48men for standing around in the tool Nobody stands in the tool house when bart
- 7:51Clayton's around. Sure, Oh I am, I drove one of the works
- 8:00home. It's it's in the garage. I'm catching cold and didn't want to
- 8:03stand around and wait for Limey to come pick me up. That trucks stay
- 8:07on the job. I told you that. I want him ready to go
- 8:09when the drivers get there in the morning. I'll have it back by then.
- 8:11Since when do you get to work on time? I'll drive it and
- 8:13leave it on the job tonight on my way in from Humboldt. You're going
- 8:16huh? Who said I wasn't. I didn't think you'd take another job.
- 8:20We're behind on this one. I'll get the bid. We start building that
- 8:22bridge the first of the month. Eat your supper, Joe o cases.
- 8:28The boys are complaining. We're driving them too hard to complain and complain and
- 8:33tell them to go to work for Lorey. You too, I wouldn't mind
- 8:35losing you. I'll tell him part he wants morbitat. I lost my appetite.
- 8:39I better get started. Maybe you ought to leave the truck here.
- 8:43It was missing when I drove it home. I'm going to take it back
- 8:46to the job. Part if the truck doesn't work right, drive our car.
- 8:48It'll be darken and all. I fix the truck before I leave here.
- 8:52I don't mind getting grease on my hands. I'm no college boy.
- 8:54I'm a mechanic. I'm a ditch tiger. I'm a truck driver. I
- 8:56did it the hard boy. I was just trying to save your trouble.
- 8:58I'm not going to have trouble. I'll fix the engine before I leave.
- 9:01How many times I can't stand it anymore? You take an each other like
- 9:09I'm going out. It's raining, so you old out out of the door.
- 9:13I don't care. Maybe you'll be gone when I get back. Both
- 9:16of you are take it easy, honey, week alone. I hope you'll
- 9:18get to build your brigs. I'm hope hurting Jack the ray makes you very
- 9:22happy. I hope the more coffee tea. You haven't finished this coffee yet.
- 9:45The rain sounds pretty nice to be under. A RUFFO wouldn't want to
- 9:48be out walking in it for Miss Clayton. And we can see real good
- 9:52living next door. Yeah, she ran out the back door kind of sudden.
- 9:56She slammed it hard, crying too. Oh, I suppose we were
- 10:00all fighting again, poor little thing, Yes, poor thing. I think
- 10:05it's the brother. Tools a family, unless they have youngsters, and that's
- 10:07different. You just said tools a family. I think it's the brother.
- 10:11But I don't suppose he has any place else to live or a thing.
- 10:16It's a pity. Oh how I would hate to live with that man,
- 10:20Barton Clayton. See you know what I mean. But it just sounded funny.
- 10:24Well, he is a terror when he gets riled up. I've heard
- 10:28him say terrible things to missus Clayton and her brother. And he does work
- 10:31hard. Yes, that's a strain on a man for a thing. Yes,
- 10:35it's just too bad. Oh here, I want to put your feet
- 10:39up on the chairs. It might be comfortable. They say it helps the
- 10:41circulation too. Oh look, look dear he Oh he's mad too, going
- 10:50in the garage. Maybe he's gonna leave her and didn't take a suitcase.
- 10:54Probably wanted something out of the tool shed. He's starting his car. Sounds
- 10:58big. Maybe it's the truck. We don't know much about trucks. I
- 11:03don't know about cars at all. I always wanted one, well, maybe
- 11:07somebody always wanted one with white spokes in the wheels. Don't make them that
- 11:11way anymore. I thought about driving right up to prayer meeting in a car
- 11:16with glue. There she is, or came back from the alley, second
- 11:20of arms went to the store. I guess it's a wonder she stays with
- 11:24him, the way he talks to her. No way to understand why people
- 11:28love each other. No, nice though it is. It is nice.
- 11:35Somebody else back there in the alley. I don't see anybody gone now.
- 11:41I guess where were they but the garbage cans. Probably straight dog. But
- 11:45I know somebody when I've seen somebody. I don't mistake straight dogs to understand
- 11:50why people love each other. Yes, yes, it is in more coffee.
- 11:56I haven't touched this yet. Well, you just tell me when you're
- 11:58ready. I tell you, lou Rain sounds pretty nice if you're inside.
- 12:05I never was one to go paddling around like a dust. When she's coming
- 12:09out again, Oh my, she's mad. Don't go into the garage.
- 12:13Oh they're gonna have a terrible fight. I just knew it. Maybe we
- 12:18can hear see something terrible and awful. See somebody's running up the drive to
- 12:26the man who was here earlier with mister Clayton's friend killed you, and I
- 12:35know I'm not get away and sit right here, mister Keg behind the desk
- 13:01next to me. Thank your corner willis. I don't mind telling you this
- 13:05in Chris is wearing me down. Three days, same stories over and over
- 13:09here. I still think there's more to Mark Clayton's death than accidental carbon monoxides
- 13:15are tricky. I don't know what he'll see. What we can find out
- 13:18now, I sure do, thank you, mister Kenny. I debated with
- 13:20myself for mad about calling you and having your drive way out here to Keney
- 13:24County. But I'm glad to help if I can corner. Oh, it'll
- 13:28be a big help, all right, I don't mind telling you that I've
- 13:30been What are they all shambering about? Quiet? Quiet in here? In
- 13:35a minute people heard I called you. They started piling into the room,
- 13:41some here at dawn this morning. I don't know you will ready to begin?
- 13:46Sure? Sure? Quiet? Quiet? Now? This is Jonathan Keg.
- 13:54You all know his reputation, and those of you who don't, I'll
- 13:56explain. Mister Kag isn't here to represent Denny side. He's not far against
- 14:01anybody. He's what they call and a meek his CURII a friend of the
- 14:05court, in this case, friend of the coroner of Caney County. He's
- 14:09after truth and justice. You want to take over, miss Keig, I'd
- 14:13rather you would ask the questions if you don't mind, all right, Joseph
- 14:18Kerwin Kerwin, come up here where we can talk to you. Take a
- 14:24chair, being over to show off you're a full name. Joseph Harlowe Kerwin,
- 14:33brother in law of Bartin Clayton. Yes, sir, I describe your
- 14:37activities the knight of the murder. Why came home from work, drove the
- 14:43truck into the garage. I went in the house, washed up, and
- 14:48I was finishing my supper when my sister screamed, hey, you and Clayton
- 14:50quarrel that evening then. Yeah, it wasn't exactly that I'd been working for
- 14:56him. He told me I was fired, might as well goes somewhere else
- 15:00to look for a job. He was kicking out of his house. In
- 15:03another way, I guess that's right. You know, whether it is or
- 15:05not, that's what he was doing. You'd had a lot of fights before,
- 15:11maybe motive enough to kill a man. I didn't go out of the
- 15:13house. My sister told you. I was there when she came back from
- 15:16the store. Calm dash and the calm down. Now you didn't like the
- 15:20way your brother in law treated your sister, did ye? No? He
- 15:24was mean to her, talk around. If he ever laid a hand on
- 15:28her, I would have would have killed him. Quiet. You're a graduate
- 15:35engineer, aren't you? Yes? And the night of the debt. You
- 15:39excuse me, mister Corner, mister Kerwin, was mister Clayton also a college
- 15:45trained engineer. He was a self made man. Made it the hard way,
- 15:48and he never forgot it, and he probably never let you forget you
- 15:52made it the easy way. Is that correct? Yes? You resented this,
- 15:56didn't you? Yes, you're excused this corner. Clayton died from carbon
- 16:03monoxide poisoning. Could that be the soul cause there was a lump on his
- 16:07head, but the carbro monoxide killed him that it might have been accidental there,
- 16:11I don't think it was. Clayton got beat up by goons wig or
- 16:14show ago. They broke his nose, but there was a fresh lump on
- 16:17his head when I examined him. I think somebody knocked him down and the
- 16:19carbro monoxide finished him. It couldn't have been suicide. Not Bart Clayton.
- 16:25Who's your most logical suspect, Jack Lay. Let's talk to him. Ellaray.
- 16:30Come up here, mister Lay. Why were you at the Clayton house
- 16:37that evening? I wanted to find out why he was bidding low and every
- 16:41construction job in the county so low they lost money. Bart told me why
- 16:45he was out to ruin my company. What did you plan to do about
- 16:48it? Clayton drove a truck for me fifteen years ago. I taught him
- 16:51everything he knew about the construction business. I helped him start his company.
- 16:56Do aim about it? Well? I left, but I was mad and
- 17:00rover ola while thinking. Then I went back to talk to him again.
- 17:04You were supposed to be going to a meeting and Humboldt, that's right.
- 17:07Weren't you going to see Clayton there? I wanted to get to him first,
- 17:11trying to talk some sense into his head, Like I say. I
- 17:14drove back to the house, parked, and then I heard doors scream.
- 17:18I ran down the driveway. She and her brother saw me. Dora started
- 17:22to yell. Joe said I'd killed Bark and Missus Clayton says you engineered a
- 17:26beating for her husband sometime last week. Part didn't thought I did, but
- 17:30I didn't. I'm a business man. I wouldn't do a thing like that
- 17:34to a competitor. You hated him, you know you hated him, Missus
- 17:38Clayton. I've warned you before another outburst like that and I'll have you taken
- 17:44out here. Let's talk with missus Clayton now. I'd like to hear her
- 17:45story, all right, miss King, and go on back to your chailery
- 17:49up here, Missus Clayton, please, Missus Clayton, and I want to
- 17:59make this as comfortable as possible for you, but you'll have to help me.
- 18:02I'm very tired. I've answered questions for days. I go on,
- 18:07mister kid, you understand that it's quite possible that your husband was not murdered,
- 18:11that he met his death accidentally. He was killed, I know he
- 18:15was. How do you know Larray threatened him make quarrel not more than an
- 18:18hour before your brother admits he didn't like mister Clayton either. Joe was in
- 18:21the house all the time. Bart was killed in the garage while trying to
- 18:23get the truck sticks. Somebody came up behind him, and what was wrong
- 18:27with the truck? I don't know. When Joe came home, he told
- 18:33Bart it wasn't working right. I tried to talk him into driving the car.
- 18:37But didn't you drive it to the store? No, I will do
- 18:40you often walk in the rain store was only a block away. How did
- 18:44you happen to go out to the garage after you came home. Joe told
- 18:48me Bart was going to make him leave the house. That made you angry?
- 18:51Yes, so you went to the garage. Yes, I come,
- 18:55Bart lying on the floor. Was the truck engine running? No? What
- 19:00I heard him trying the starter? When I came back from the grocery store.
- 19:03Were the garage doors open? They were all closed. The door of
- 19:07the tool shed, the small door into the garage, and the big doors
- 19:11were all closed. You didn't hear an engine running? No? Yes,
- 19:17yes, I did it. It must have been when I came back from
- 19:19the store. But you just said you heard the starter as you returned from
- 19:22the store. I'm confused, But but I did hear the starter, and
- 19:26I think the car must have started. I don't really know. And you
- 19:30believe your husband died between the time you came home from the store and went
- 19:34out to the garage. I don't know what happened except that Jack Laray killed
- 19:37him some Well, now, missus Clayton, what did you do after you
- 19:42discovered the body? I called Joe and what did he do? Well?
- 19:47You stopped to talk to Larray? Did you see Larray? I saw I'm
- 19:49running up the driveway. If your accusation is correct, and Jack Laray did
- 19:53murder your husband, why did he return to the scene of his crime?
- 19:56A few minutes later? He question occurred to you and missus Clayton, No,
- 20:02can you approve you didn't quarrel with your husband in the garage? Stop
- 20:04it. You're trying to confuse me. That man fills parte Ray. He
- 20:10did it. He threatened my husband part kicked him out. The ray King
- 20:14tied to the garage and maybe he was hiding. Oh that's it. He
- 20:18tried to get away. We saw him running a quiet, quiet in here,
- 20:25Coroner Willet, Quiet everybody, yes, mister Kig, Coroner Willet,
- 20:30I would like to request to recess until tomorrow morning. At that time,
- 20:33I would like to cross examine an innocent bystare. I can't stand any more
- 20:37questions. He's guilty. I want the ray funny. I'm running this inquiry,
- 20:41Missus Clayton, in compliance with mister Kig's request. This coroner's jury is
- 20:47now adjourned, and we'll meet again tomorrow morning at nine o'clock. Jonathan Kegg
- 20:56is about to call another witness. That witness could be if it were,
- 21:00could you remember what you have heard? It would be vital that you do,
- 21:04for in this coroner's inquest, you would hold a life in your hands.
- 21:23Are you going to Chicago to attend the Democratic Convention? You can,
- 21:27you know, just by dialing your NBC station, for NBC will bring you
- 21:32right into convention Hall by giving you the most comprehensive coverage ever accorded the nomination
- 21:37of a Democratic presidential candidate, from keynote address to final ballot. The NBC
- 21:42microphones will be listening. You'll hear the speakers that delegates, the reaction of
- 21:48the onlookers in the gallery, and all in the comfort of your own home.
- 21:52Remember to dial your local NBC station and you two can be right in
- 21:56Chicago listening to history as it is being made. Jonathan Kegg has called his
- 22:15next witness two witnesses, two old lad neighbors at the flat, save them
- 22:22a new trusty and sessions. The sisters are before the coroner. Ladies,
- 22:29it's not proper practice. We couldn't, mister Willard. We just couldn't do
- 22:33that. We go every place together. I wouldn't know what to say if
- 22:36Lou wasn't Whitney. One witness testifies at the time. That's the standard procedure,
- 22:41and we'll just have to pews. Why I'd be too nervous up here
- 22:45alone, nervous and upset. Under the circumstances, Coroner will it, I'd
- 22:48recommend that this inquest grants special privileges to these ladies and allow me to cross
- 22:52examine them together. They both heard sounds surrounding the death of Barton Clayton,
- 22:57sounds that I believe having a important relationship to the death of bart Clayton.
- 23:03What under the circumstances, Mister k will waive our rule and grant your request.
- 23:10Please go on with your question and bring another chair over here. Johnson,
- 23:15if you will take your seats please, yes, certainly, are you?
- 23:21Ladies? Lou and Sarah Prescott live next door to the Clayton Hall.
- 23:25Is that correct? We'll neighbor and the east. Where were you between seven
- 23:27and eight o'clock on the evening of bart and Clayton's death, and our bedport
- 23:32is screened? Will you describe in your own words what transpired during that time?
- 23:37Go on, see you start, lou Well, i'd ready eat well,
- 23:40all right, well, ready, after we'd finished supper, Joe drove
- 23:44in the driveway with the truck. Did he usually bring a truck to the
- 23:47house, Not as once in a while. According to other witnesses, the
- 23:49truck was not performing properly. Did you notice any indication of mechanical difficulty?
- 23:55I beg your part, as he means with the truck winning all right.
- 24:00You don't know much about car. We've never had one. Did you notice
- 24:03the engine coughing or sputtering? No, it was all right so far as
- 24:07I could tell. Joe left it growing when he got out to open the
- 24:10garage door. Then he drove it inside and closed the door, and we
- 24:12heard it running fine. After this, will you describe the Clayton's garage.
- 24:17It's beat and there's a tool shed on the west side. Do you know
- 24:21the construction material of the building, Well, it looked like cement, before
- 24:25it was painted corner. Well, it's such a building as practically an air
- 24:27tight room entered through double doors from the outside through the tool shed. Now
- 24:33to continue, When did you see missus Clayton after Joe went in the house
- 24:37a few minutes later? She ran out the bed door. How was she
- 24:41dressed in a light coat and no hat on her head? She looked very
- 24:44angry. Was it raining, Well, we thought it was strange. Did
- 24:47she'd go for a walk? She always did that for they quarreled, go
- 24:49for a walk to cool off. When did you see mister Clayton Just before
- 24:52Missus Clayton came home, as she did to the store, she was carrying
- 24:56a grocery set. You saw mister Clayton go into the garage. Yes,
- 25:00look mad too. We heard him trying to start his car. Are you
- 25:03sure whether it was the passenger car or the truck? Well, Lucy,
- 25:06at the time, she thought it was the truck. I did say that,
- 25:08but I couldn't be posit. Did you hear an engine running? Well,
- 25:11I'm not sure. No, No, just to start a going round
- 25:15This is Clayton. Yes, did you hear an engine running? Yes?
- 25:18I heard when I came back from the door. Are you sure it was
- 25:22not running when you left the house before you went to the store. I
- 25:25remember you were angry. You might not have noticed as you walked out.
- 25:29I don't know. I don't know. Leave me at all. I believe
- 25:32we have a clear picture of what happened after the time Clayton entered the garage.
- 25:36I saw somebody in the alley by the garbage can, which was a
- 25:37straight dog. I told you they'd see I know, a stray dog.
- 25:41When I see I didn't see anybody in late. There wasn't anybody. Ladies,
- 25:47ladies, please, yeah, very sorry, we apologize. Tell me
- 25:51when you saw Jack Laray He ran up the driveway from the truck after doors
- 25:56and her brother who were out in the back, and Joe yelled, you
- 25:57killed buff, didn't she said he did? You murdered him? True,
- 26:02he's killed. In present part, I don't be enough running jury, quiet,
- 26:06quiet mood. A few more questions, ladies, Yes, mister King
- 26:11in this inquest, the sounds you heard are important. Try very hard to
- 26:15remember accurately. Certain Joe Kerwin drove the truck into the garage. He closed
- 26:21the big doors, then he walked out through the tool ship. Is that
- 26:23correct? Yes? Yes, did you hear a car engine running after Joe
- 26:29Kerwin entered the house? Oh? Yeah, it ran quite a while.
- 26:32The motor was running after he entered the house. You're short of that.
- 26:34That's why we thought it strange that mister Clayton did trouble starting the truck.
- 26:37It has been going quite well. Thank you, ladies. We are now
- 26:41on the track of a killer. Yes, mister King, Mark Clayton died
- 26:45of carbon monoxide poisoning. The garage was a lethal chamber before he walked into
- 26:49it. Deadly fumes had come from the truck engine. He was working on
- 26:52the motor when he was overcome and fell to the floor, injuring his head.
- 26:56What's your evidence, mister King. The Trescott sisters have told us they
- 27:00heard the engine running and heard it stop before Clayton went into the garage.
- 27:03I heard it running two on my way home from the grocery show. No,
- 27:07missus Clayton, on your way to the store, you were upset angry
- 27:11when you left the house. If you had not been, you might have
- 27:14noticed the engine running in the closed garage. If you had noticed, you
- 27:17could have saved your husband's life. No, coroner, will it. The
- 27:23only way the testimony of our innocent bystanders, say to lou Trescott, can
- 27:26be interpreted, is that Joseph Kerwin planned the death of his brother in law,
- 27:32bart Clayton. Joe, you knew Clayton was to leave the house a
- 27:36few minutes after you came home. You left the truck running in the garage,
- 27:40with just enough fuel to fill the room with gas before the engine stopped.
- 27:44You hated your brother in law. You wanted to take over his construction
- 27:47company, and knew you could if your widowed sister asked you too. When
- 27:51you saw Jack Larray running toward you, it was your brother who shouted you
- 27:53killed bart. Until that moment, you had no idea your husband was dead.
- 27:57Only the murderer would have known. I thought you'd be better off,
- 28:03I've thought, Coroner Willet, I recommend that your jury find that Barton Clayton
- 28:07died at the hands of Joseph Kerwin. Mister Kig, Now that it's all
- 28:26over with the trial, there's one thing about this case is still bothers me.
- 28:29What is it? The Trescotts issues. He went out him anyway,
- 28:33We sure he saw someone out in the alley just before the murder was discovered.
- 28:37That's right, Say saw it and Blue didn't. What do you think
- 28:41it was, mister King? I didn't bring it out in court, but
- 28:45for the rest of my life I will believe sincere and without question. At
- 28:48what say Prescott saw? Asked mister King was simply a stray dog. Oh
- 28:56oh, and mister Kig, he asked Corner Willet, as the coroner of
- 29:00Kenney carry for people. I want to thank you for finding the real murderer
- 29:04of Barton Clayton. I appreciate that, Corner. And when will we see
- 29:08you again? Mister Keg. As jamikis curia, I don't know just where
- 29:11I'll be, but whatever crime occurs, you will be sure I shall again
- 29:15offer my services as a maker's curia, whether it be in criminal court,
- 29:19at a coroner's inquest, or in the judges chambers. Good Night, good
- 29:23night. A Life in Your Hand is created by Earl Stanley Gardner, with
- 29:36script by Doug Johnson, directed by John Cowen. Jonathan Kegg is played by
- 29:41Calvin Caddell, with musical effects by A. Dell Scott, conducted by Whitey
- 29:45Berkeway, engineering by Bill Knight. This has been a partially transcribed Bell production.
- 29:52And this is George Stone extending a cordial invitation for each of you to
- 29:57see with us again next week, when the National Broadcasting Company will again place
- 30:03A Life in Your Hand to night, Joined the Chase on NBC, Welcome
- 30:22back. I really like it when a keg goes in and he's performing his
- 30:30duty for a corner's inquest. I tend to find that a little bit more
- 30:37believable than him doing it at a trial that it would be tough, I
- 30:48would think, to get opposing counsel and a criminal trial to agree to let
- 30:57some independent party come in the interest of justice. It's basically kind of legal
- 31:03fantasy in that way. It seems a lot more credible when he comes in
- 31:08to help a corner's inquest, which is just investigating. All right. Well,
- 31:14another good case with Carlton Cadell completed, and we'll be back next week
- 31:19with another episode of A Life in Your Hands. In the meanwhile, Sandraw
