- 0:17Speaker 1: Heard a Glory Podcast New Year A little late Honor Sarbnik,
- 0:23Speaker 1: Dakota Free Tag Austin, and I think overslept once again.
- 0:29Speaker 2: He just the New Year.
- 0:33Speaker 3: New Year's resolution was not to be on time.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Yep for the.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Return to Glory podcast. Been a couple of weeks, been
- 0:42Speaker 1: busy with the holidays, Christmas, New Year's I don't know.
- 0:48Speaker 1: I think we need to change the name of our
- 0:50Speaker 1: podcast to something that's more basketball related because we're not
- 0:56Speaker 1: really returning to any glories. There's never been this kind
- 0:59Speaker 1: of start to a year ever, not even close.
- 1:04Speaker 3: It's Nebraska basketball history. And then on the flip.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Side, the football team played in their bowl game as
- 1:12Speaker 1: we last talked.
- 1:14Speaker 3: I don't really want to talk about it, but I
- 1:16Speaker 3: think we need to.
- 1:18Speaker 1: And then the transfer portal is open, so there's a
- 1:20Speaker 1: lot to get to today.
- 1:23Speaker 4: Before before we start, I think we need to pinch
- 1:25Speaker 4: ourselves to make sure we're still in real life with
- 1:27Speaker 4: the basketball team.
- 1:28Speaker 3: Because I have where you want to start?
- 1:31Speaker 4: I don't know, Yeah, I don't let's start basketball team.
- 1:36Speaker 4: Let's start positive we can we can a bad note.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Where do you want to start with that? It's it's
- 1:45Speaker 1: it's it's incredible. I I just I can't understand what's
- 1:52Speaker 1: going on because every game it's like, all right, back
- 1:55Speaker 1: to reality, a little bit back to reality, and then
- 1:59Speaker 1: we're in the game, and then you go, well, might
- 2:02Speaker 1: as well just win this one. And that's what we
- 2:05Speaker 1: did recently here. I guess Monday night against Ohio State
- 2:10Speaker 1: on the road game that we were two and a
- 2:12Speaker 1: half point underdogs, and then going back to last Friday,
- 2:16Speaker 1: you and I went to the Michigan State game at home,
- 2:20Speaker 1: beating the top ten team in PBA.
- 2:25Speaker 3: It just is one of those things that it's kind
- 2:28Speaker 3: of hard to believe.
- 2:30Speaker 4: The crazy part about what they're doing is they're proving
- 2:33Speaker 4: they can win games in multip different ways. They can
- 2:35Speaker 4: win a shootout, they can win an ugly fist fight.
- 2:38Speaker 2: They can win on the road.
- 2:40Speaker 4: Like it's we keep on saying, I just just wait,
- 2:43Speaker 4: just wait till they play on the road, Just wait
- 2:45Speaker 4: till they playlet State, Wait till they play Oklahoma Ky State.
- 2:48Speaker 4: But I think by now it's like, Okay, this team
- 2:52Speaker 4: is for real and they are going to slip up
- 2:56Speaker 4: and lose one here. But maybe, I mean, I mean,
- 3:01Speaker 4: there's there's I've heard people saying, oh, they're gonna to
- 3:03Speaker 4: defeat no way, there's no way. But but I do,
- 3:08Speaker 4: I mean, what would you put their max loss there
- 3:11Speaker 4: right now?
- 3:12Speaker 2: I think five would be.
- 3:13Speaker 4: I say they're gonna lose five games max because Big
- 3:16Speaker 4: ten's down too.
- 3:17Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 3:18Speaker 1: I mean I've seen a lot of different projections of
- 3:20Speaker 1: you know, twenty four to twenty five wins out there.
- 3:25Speaker 1: We're projected like two or three seed right now in
- 3:29Speaker 1: the tournament, which never tho I'd ever say that in
- 3:32Speaker 1: my lifetime, insane, especially this soon. So I guess, well, Dak,
- 3:39Speaker 1: look after watching him, like what would you contribute? Like
- 3:43Speaker 1: what are we can go? We don't, don't. You don't
- 3:45Speaker 1: give every explanation, but name one thing that's really helped
- 3:50Speaker 1: us become who we are.
- 3:53Speaker 2: I think.
- 3:56Speaker 4: I think the best thing that's happened this season is
- 3:58Speaker 4: Sam Hoyberg's improvement. I don't know how many coaches we've
- 4:01Speaker 4: heard say after the game, like just call him out
- 4:03Speaker 4: and say how greater player he is, how hardy plays
- 4:07Speaker 4: and all that. I think, even just from last year,
- 4:10Speaker 4: how much he's improved. His intensity too, gets like team
- 4:14Speaker 4: going when they're when they're on these like uh slumster
- 4:17Speaker 4: in the middle game. It seems like he always gets
- 4:18Speaker 4: a big steel or big three, so I get him
- 4:21Speaker 4: back going. I think he's been the biggest bright spot
- 4:25Speaker 4: so far for this team.
- 4:27Speaker 3: Spoken like an opposing team's coach.
- 4:30Speaker 4: I mean we heard, we've heard like frist six or
- 4:32Speaker 4: seven coaches call him out first player they mentioned.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean at a high level, our basketball team
- 4:40Speaker 1: is playing and doing all the things that we wish
- 4:47Speaker 1: the football team could figure out a little bit. They
- 4:49Speaker 1: just they're they're tough, they're they're gritty, they do all
- 4:53Speaker 1: the little things. And Sam Hoiberg's definition of all that
- 4:57Speaker 1: for the team and and that what he's bringing. And
- 5:01Speaker 1: I mean we have all the other players fallow suit
- 5:04Speaker 1: in that in that aspect too. And I say rank
- 5:05Speaker 1: mass is very similar, being you know, more of the
- 5:08Speaker 1: player leader where he is our best player, and when
- 5:13Speaker 1: your best player does all those things, everybody else feeds
- 5:17Speaker 1: off of it. So yeah, I mean, I completely I
- 5:21Speaker 1: think that's a big piece of it. Now I'm just
- 5:23Speaker 1: gonna I'm just gonna say it another thing, right. Ryan
- 5:28Speaker 1: Hammer on Instagram, hed a big college basketball national guy,
- 5:32Speaker 1: complimented our defense to Nate Lenzer. In our defense this
- 5:35Speaker 1: year and this is the same defense we played last
- 5:38Speaker 1: year too and the year before, but.
- 5:39Speaker 3: It's taken it to the next level.
- 5:41Speaker 1: And when you have guys with the attitude in the
- 5:44Speaker 1: in the mindset that like Sam does, Gosh, it looks
- 5:47Speaker 1: really really good. And the rotation that we constantly are
- 5:53Speaker 1: in and we're so good at it, it causes teams
- 5:57Speaker 1: to fits. We saw it last year too. We saw
- 5:58Speaker 1: it when you play even good team to just it
- 6:01Speaker 1: takes certain things away in the half court that you
- 6:05Speaker 1: just can't do it in your offense and you have
- 6:07Speaker 1: to adjust. It makes the offense adjust to you. It's
- 6:10Speaker 1: just very impressive. Like it is, and like you said,
- 6:14Speaker 1: the Michigan State game was more a little more of
- 6:17Speaker 1: a rock fight. You can go on the road with
- 6:19Speaker 1: with a game plan like that and beat Ohio State
- 6:22Speaker 1: team like it. They do a really good job. And
- 6:24Speaker 1: no you're not you're not really guarding one on one ever.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Like it's a constant rotation. It's a constant thirty five
- 6:32Speaker 1: second or thirty second defender butt off. And it's impressive.
- 6:37Speaker 1: I think that's a that's a big bright spot in
- 6:40Speaker 1: my mind.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:42Speaker 4: The uh, the thing that really which is probably this
- 6:46Speaker 4: preak give you a lot Tingles being the defensive coaches,
- 6:49Speaker 4: and it impressed me a lot. The Ohio State game
- 6:52Speaker 4: is when they switched to one three to one for
- 6:53Speaker 4: just a couple possessions, how much it threw a High
- 6:55Speaker 4: State off and they went right back to what the
- 6:57Speaker 4: normal defense is.
- 6:58Speaker 1: But that's been new. That was new. We haven't seen that.
- 7:02Speaker 4: But to be able to do that, that was impressive.
- 7:05Speaker 4: And you can tell just threw our stay off, like
- 7:06Speaker 4: what the hell is this? And another big part about
- 7:10Speaker 4: the High Stake game I thought was early on in
- 7:13Speaker 4: the game, I was like, holy crap, they're big. It's
- 7:15Speaker 4: going to give us fast and it really never did
- 7:17Speaker 4: because Nebraska doesn't have that much size, but they they
- 7:22Speaker 4: can mask that with how well they played defensively and
- 7:24Speaker 4: how how hard they play.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Yeah, we don't have side, but we are a long
- 7:29Speaker 1: like I think this first team that well last year
- 7:33Speaker 1: got a little bit too, But you start seeing the
- 7:35Speaker 1: type of guys that Hoiberg and staff are recruiting two
- 7:42Speaker 1: and and that that comes from it. We'll get the
- 7:45Speaker 1: football that comes to having an identity and things that
- 7:48Speaker 1: you really truly believe in because once you understand those
- 7:51Speaker 1: things you're able to then go find guys, even though
- 7:54Speaker 1: they might not be the the five star, four star
- 7:57Speaker 1: player in the portal. You're able to find the prototype
- 8:00Speaker 1: of players that you want on your team, whether it
- 8:03Speaker 1: comes to their physical build or their mental build of
- 8:07Speaker 1: how they are as a player. And guys like Price
- 8:09Speaker 1: Stamford come in from Iowa who he was okay at Iowa,
- 8:14Speaker 1: but he comes into our system both offensively and defensively,
- 8:17Speaker 1: and he becomes one of our best players in our team.
- 8:19Speaker 4: He said the most threes in like I don't know,
- 8:22Speaker 4: the first fifteen games that anyone ever for the Huskers.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Yeah, So that's that's one of those things that you know,
- 8:29Speaker 1: he asks sneaky length. He fits into what Fred's trying
- 8:33Speaker 1: to do on offense, and and we have I mean,
- 8:36Speaker 1: he's just an example. We have other guys that are
- 8:38Speaker 1: like that too, So I think I think it's very important.
- 8:42Speaker 1: That's what the basketball team has done, is they've established
- 8:45Speaker 1: himself on who they want to be. And and yes,
- 8:47Speaker 1: it's taken Fred several years to understand and realize, Okay,
- 8:53Speaker 1: here's what we got to do with Nebraska, and we're
- 8:57Speaker 1: in the middle of it right now, hopefully it's here,
- 9:00Speaker 1: stay for several years here. I do think rank mast
- 9:06Speaker 1: is a very big part of it with what he
- 9:09Speaker 1: brings from a leadership standpoint, but then obviously also on
- 9:13Speaker 1: the offensive the defensive end, I think he opens things
- 9:17Speaker 1: up when you have a guy like that out there
- 9:19Speaker 1: that can do what he does on the offensive end.
- 9:24Speaker 1: So anyways, I just think the big thing of the
- 9:27Speaker 1: basketball team that you're seeing come fruition here is the
- 9:32Speaker 1: identity piece, and we've recruited to it, we've developed within
- 9:37Speaker 1: the program to it, and like I said, it's everything
- 9:40Speaker 1: the football team wishes they could be right now, they
- 9:43Speaker 1: don't know how to do it. Basketball team is doing
- 9:47Speaker 1: those things and it's paying off. That's a big reason
- 9:50Speaker 1: why we're fifteen.
- 9:51Speaker 6: To know.
- 9:52Speaker 4: Here's the biggest part I think got Danny wise is
- 9:55Speaker 4: Kal Jacobson. That guy has not scored, a done anything
- 9:58Speaker 4: on offense the last two or three games, and he's
- 10:01Speaker 4: still playing like twenty fifteen to twenty minutes a game
- 10:04Speaker 4: just because he's that good defensively and they won't take
- 10:07Speaker 4: him out because that I think that's where you recognize
- 10:09Speaker 4: what they want to be. And eventually here I was
- 10:14Speaker 4: talking to you about this, I think he will start
- 10:15Speaker 4: hitting the shots, which once once he does, that's that's
- 10:19Speaker 4: going to add a whole new wrinkle this team. But
- 10:22Speaker 4: but you can tell that they just want to they
- 10:25Speaker 4: know who they are on offense right now and defensively,
- 10:28Speaker 4: and that that they love playing with each other.
- 10:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I will say that another big thing that I'm noticing,
- 10:38Speaker 1: Like this team, like you just said, place for each other,
- 10:43Speaker 1: and they do not care about anything other than winning
- 10:47Speaker 1: the game. But it's very very very very evident they
- 10:53Speaker 1: want to win for each other. They want to do
- 10:55Speaker 1: the things for their coaches that they You don't see
- 10:59Speaker 1: that anymore in college, or I should they anymore very
- 11:03Speaker 1: little in college. You just see a lot of guys
- 11:06Speaker 1: that want to get theirs. I mean, we we've seen
- 11:08Speaker 1: the extreme in the basketball program early on, and that's
- 11:11Speaker 1: what I'm talking about an identity as he's example one A.
- 11:16Speaker 1: But you go in the line with Andrew White, the
- 11:18Speaker 1: third Teddy Allen, We've had, We've had Alonso Verge, We've
- 11:24Speaker 1: had a lot of different guys. We've gone down that
- 11:27Speaker 1: path and Fred found out, oh boy, that doesn't work.
- 11:33Speaker 1: So we got we got guys that don't care about
- 11:36Speaker 1: their individual performances and and they're worried about the team
- 11:40Speaker 1: and that that's it's big. That's when when you have that,
- 11:44Speaker 1: it makes it a lot easier to coach. And when
- 11:48Speaker 1: you look at us, and that's what I what I did,
- 11:50Speaker 1: were a lot of people did. When you look at
- 11:52Speaker 1: the you look at the team, you go, boy, we
- 11:56Speaker 1: don't very athletic. We look like.
- 12:00Speaker 3: We might not be very good this year. And I'm
- 12:02Speaker 3: raising my hand.
- 12:03Speaker 1: I thought that at the beginning of the year, all
- 12:06Speaker 1: these intangible things went out. They they destroy those things,
- 12:11Speaker 1: and then you do start to look athletic, you do
- 12:13Speaker 1: start to look long, you do start to look like
- 12:15Speaker 1: you can defend. Oh and guess what, we can shoot
- 12:17Speaker 1: the ball. Shocker.
- 12:20Speaker 3: So it's one of those things that all that stopped
- 12:24Speaker 3: playing for each other and playing for a team and
- 12:25Speaker 3: caring about the team performance, it.
- 12:29Speaker 1: Pays off. And that's that's that's the most part you
- 12:32Speaker 1: can give to Fred the staff in the program right
- 12:34Speaker 1: now is getting to that point because it's not easy,
- 12:37Speaker 1: and especially in a world of nil and transfer portal
- 12:39Speaker 1: and go get mine, it's that's not easy to do.
- 12:43Speaker 1: And I think that's a big reason, another big reason
- 12:45Speaker 1: why we're fifteen to zero.
- 12:48Speaker 4: Well, we haven't mentioned this guy yet, and I there
- 12:52Speaker 4: was not any had come around this guy going into
- 12:54Speaker 4: the year. I don't think I didn't anything about him.
- 12:55Speaker 4: Is fragert A'm coming off the bench. I mean, he
- 12:59Speaker 4: had the most point last night or two nights ago,
- 13:01Speaker 4: but he can he can score from anywhere. He might
- 13:07Speaker 4: Stamford might be our best offense, but he's he's moving
- 13:09Speaker 4: up there in offensive like he's probably our third option,
- 13:12Speaker 4: second or third option right now on offense. His and
- 13:15Speaker 4: ones at the end of the game basically want won
- 13:18Speaker 4: us a game there. And and the fire that he
- 13:20Speaker 4: plays with too, you can just tell that he's he's
- 13:24Speaker 4: kind of the one when they go in these slumps.
- 13:25Speaker 4: He he gets the team hyped up and energized, and
- 13:29Speaker 4: he always seems to have the big basket when they
- 13:31Speaker 4: need it.
- 13:32Speaker 1: He's the example of a guy that you would just
- 13:34Speaker 1: you would have never thought if you're recruiting, you know
- 13:37Speaker 1: from Lincoln went to Lincoln Southwest.
- 13:39Speaker 3: I I'll be honest, I didn't even know he wasn't nicey.
- 13:41Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, yeah?
- 13:42Speaker 4: Did you did you You probably didn't hear anything about
- 13:44Speaker 4: him either, like no one did.
- 13:45Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a perfect example of a person where Hoiberg
- 13:50Speaker 1: and staff identified it, identified someone that's going to fit
- 13:55Speaker 1: into what they want to do on both ends, and
- 13:57Speaker 1: they identified a personality that you know what, Yeah, he's
- 14:01Speaker 1: got a little fire in him, and he's kind of
- 14:03Speaker 1: the guy that someone say it yesterday and it sums
- 14:07Speaker 1: it up, the guy that other teams just absolutely hate.
- 14:11Speaker 1: Like you hate guy, you hate it, you just for
- 14:13Speaker 1: a lot of reasons. But if you can control him
- 14:16Speaker 1: as a as a coach and as a team, gosh,
- 14:18Speaker 1: he's he's he has such a big valuable asset. I
- 14:21Speaker 1: didn't see No one saw that coming. But that's again
- 14:25Speaker 1: talk about development coaching. Oh man, that that's that's the
- 14:28Speaker 1: definition of it there. And you're right, he out of
- 14:33Speaker 1: anybody right now that that is you kind of want
- 14:36Speaker 1: to go. He might cost you a few things, and
- 14:39Speaker 1: he almost did turn out a big turnover. He had
- 14:41Speaker 1: a stupid technical against Michigan State. Like some of those
- 14:45Speaker 1: things that are still freshman type of things. You know,
- 14:49Speaker 1: you get through those things, but at the same time,
- 14:52Speaker 1: sometimes you need a guy that has a little bit
- 14:54Speaker 1: of i'll call it a Draymond Green in him.
- 14:58Speaker 3: Yeah, you have a little bit of that type of mindset.
- 15:01Speaker 1: It kind of gets you fired up a little bit
- 15:05Speaker 1: as a team and keeps you on your toes and
- 15:07Speaker 1: you know you can't you can't do what the cost
- 15:09Speaker 1: of games. Don't get me wrong, but man as a couple
- 15:11Speaker 1: of finishes late and things that he can get done offensively,
- 15:14Speaker 1: it makes it hard to guard. What I thought was
- 15:18Speaker 1: interesting to Ohio State game with Breger thought he passed
- 15:21Speaker 1: up a lot of shots to get better shots. He
- 15:23Speaker 1: has some good shots to get better shots. I mean
- 15:25Speaker 1: that's another good sign of playing for each other and
- 15:29Speaker 1: understanding exactly what you want from a program.
- 15:34Speaker 4: You could tell you where to take some of those threes.
- 15:36Speaker 4: But then he's for dec even freshman. He's so smart
- 15:38Speaker 4: you can just tid not take a three driving and
- 15:41Speaker 4: kick it out or do whatever with it.
- 15:42Speaker 1: But I mean that's coaching.
- 15:45Speaker 4: Yeah, to be like this Gid already is a freshman's insane.
- 15:50Speaker 4: I mean, they thank god he's there because with the
- 15:54Speaker 4: Siegeon now you need this scoring or or else we'd
- 15:56Speaker 4: be really screwed.
- 15:57Speaker 2: So I just don't.
- 16:00Speaker 4: I said Horberd was the biggest part. Now now it
- 16:02Speaker 4: might be going back to him. He might be the
- 16:04Speaker 4: biggest part of the scene so far, the biggest surprise.
- 16:07Speaker 1: See, yeah, you're trying to pick off who it is.
- 16:11Speaker 1: That's what's kind of fun. I I don't even like
- 16:15Speaker 1: try to say who is you know, who is our
- 16:17Speaker 1: best play? I don't even go down that path in
- 16:19Speaker 1: my brain because I think we're such a unit. Like
- 16:22Speaker 1: as a group, everybody does their parts, and everybody's doing
- 16:25Speaker 1: them very very well. Jared Garcia had his game a
- 16:28Speaker 1: few weeks, a few games ago, he still came and
- 16:30Speaker 1: hit a big three. Everyone's doing their part well. So yeah,
- 16:35Speaker 1: you could say this person, this person, this person's the
- 16:37Speaker 1: key piece. Oh they all they all are huge, and
- 16:41Speaker 1: that's why there were built and that's why the or
- 16:44Speaker 1: the way we are. So I don't know, it's been
- 16:48Speaker 1: It's been very fun. Just wanted to. We have to,
- 16:50Speaker 1: got to enjoy it.
- 16:52Speaker 2: You know.
- 16:52Speaker 1: We hope we're here to stay. I I find it
- 16:55Speaker 1: hard to believe that we're gonna stay on a two
- 16:57Speaker 1: or three seed line from here on out. But we
- 16:59Speaker 1: definitely good. Like there's no reason to think we can't.
- 17:04Speaker 1: And obviously if you do that, you you.
- 17:07Speaker 3: Give yourself a very very good.
- 17:10Speaker 1: Chance to play a team that you should be favorites
- 17:15Speaker 1: against and can win a first tournament game this year,
- 17:20Speaker 1: which is gonna be the biggest elephant in the room,
- 17:25Speaker 1: monkey off your back thing when we get there.
- 17:30Speaker 3: But it is, I arey seed, the better, better you're
- 17:32Speaker 3: gonna get there.
- 17:33Speaker 4: We we still got to see the if they can
- 17:35Speaker 4: win Indiana. See this team is for real. No, I'm kidding,
- 17:39Speaker 4: we don't.
- 17:40Speaker 2: We got to be over that.
- 17:41Speaker 4: By this point, I'm saying, hey, this, Oh, let's let's
- 17:43Speaker 4: wait and see about if they can win this game
- 17:45Speaker 4: that game.
- 17:46Speaker 2: No, this this seems for real.
- 17:47Speaker 1: Now, Yeah, I doesn't see I said I. I still
- 17:53Speaker 1: I had to like put a number on it. I'm
- 17:56Speaker 1: still gonna say we're gonna be I'd probably go a
- 17:59Speaker 1: five seed. Yes, that's given out of seat's gonna go.
- 18:01Speaker 1: But it's kind of just I think a little bit
- 18:04Speaker 1: us just being a little bit pessimistic, right, Like if
- 18:06Speaker 1: we keep playing this way, we should beat the bottom
- 18:08Speaker 1: half of the big ten and beat them by ten
- 18:10Speaker 1: or fifteen, like just how it should be. I don't
- 18:13Speaker 1: know that that that will happen. But why not, It's
- 18:18Speaker 1: what he's saying, why not? Why why why can't why
- 18:21Speaker 1: not just win this game. Why not just beat those
- 18:22Speaker 1: teams every time we play them?
- 18:25Speaker 6: Well, then Austin's here late enough to miss all of
- 18:28Speaker 6: the takes.
- 18:32Speaker 2: Here we go.
- 18:34Speaker 4: You know, I often go afb out the basketball team.
- 18:36Speaker 4: We are just bowed down with it.
- 18:38Speaker 6: So what are your thoughts? I don't know. I definitely won.
- 18:41Speaker 6: I called his family. I was on vacation in Boston.
- 18:44Speaker 6: I got back Monday, so I thought last night was Tuesday.
- 18:47Speaker 6: I didn't see your text until this morning when I
- 18:49Speaker 6: woke up, I was like, oh shit, it's Wednesday. No,
- 18:56Speaker 6: they're they're they're really good. Uh, they're obviously squea you
- 19:00Speaker 6: out all these wins. So I don't know. I don't know.
- 19:04Speaker 6: Michigan still scares me if you're looking at like, you know,
- 19:07Speaker 6: Big ten teams alone, like I think they're probably right
- 19:11Speaker 6: where they should be, right, you know, like we're the
- 19:13Speaker 6: fourth team in the Big Ten right perdue Michigan and
- 19:17Speaker 6: oh no, we're the third one Preudue. Michigan are ranked AHEADEMUS.
- 19:20Speaker 6: That's probably right. We'll be in Michigan state Illinois.
- 19:25Speaker 3: I just want to say, you just jumped in right
- 19:27Speaker 3: away and compared us to Michigan.
- 19:28Speaker 1: Oh man, that was great.
- 19:30Speaker 5: I'm just saying I'm just saying like that all I'm
- 19:33Speaker 5: saying that that's where we're at, and like I had,
- 19:36Speaker 5: I'm not even like I still it's weird saying our
- 19:39Speaker 5: name like next to Duke in the rankings.
- 19:41Speaker 1: I don't even I think we're Oh my god, we
- 19:44Speaker 1: get beat by then by twenty. I don't think we would.
- 19:47Speaker 1: But your brain just kind of goes that way and
- 19:49Speaker 1: and write what you just said. You're like, Okay, yeah,
- 19:52Speaker 1: I'm scared of Michigan. I'm like, like, yeah, we are
- 19:56Speaker 1: talking about that right now, Like that's.
- 19:57Speaker 6: Where we're I mean, the last two games are often
- 19:59Speaker 6: just poorly, and we still won, like I mean Michigan State.
- 20:03Speaker 6: Our offense played bad, like it was not, I mean
- 20:05Speaker 6: outside of it not like we had. Mask got incredibly
- 20:10Speaker 6: hot in the first half, and then you know, I
- 20:13Speaker 6: thought he was gonna fall apart when Fraker scares me,
- 20:16Speaker 6: I don't know, I don't you know. I think we missed.
- 20:20Speaker 6: We're gonna miss the season. At some point. We're gonna
- 20:23Speaker 6: have a little bit of a slump. I think we're
- 20:24Speaker 6: you know, we're still gonna lose two or three games
- 20:28Speaker 6: in the last fifteen for sure, if not more. But
- 20:34Speaker 6: I think we missed the season scoring. I don't love
- 20:38Speaker 6: that we have to like I don't know what the thing.
- 20:42Speaker 6: My takeaway is we win with our defense and that
- 20:48Speaker 6: should travel. We still don't have a second big that
- 20:51Speaker 6: if mask if mask Masked gets in a foul trouble,
- 20:57Speaker 6: I think we'll see some issues when we get up
- 20:58Speaker 6: have some some other big teams. But I'm not worried
- 21:02Speaker 6: about making the tournament anymore. I hope we make the
- 21:06Speaker 6: city because we already have what four quad one wins,
- 21:10Speaker 6: So I feel like, you know, even if we fall apart,
- 21:14Speaker 6: we're making the tournament because we're outside of an absolute collapse.
- 21:19Speaker 1: So it feels like even if we lose out we
- 21:21Speaker 1: still eat that we should still make it. But we're
- 21:23Speaker 1: obviously not going to lose out right. But it just
- 21:28Speaker 1: it's so it's it's.
- 21:29Speaker 6: Just weird because I'm not looking at the Big ten
- 21:31Speaker 6: season anymore. I'm looking I'm looking for seeding now. I'm
- 21:36Speaker 6: not really I don't really care if we win the
- 21:38Speaker 6: Big Ten, but that's what I'm saying. It's like, well,
- 21:40Speaker 6: as far as Big Ten games go, it's like, well,
- 21:43Speaker 6: I guess Michigan in a month. February will be tough.
- 21:46Speaker 4: You're you're looking at the Michigan game, and that's give
- 21:47Speaker 4: me a one two matchup.
- 21:48Speaker 6: Right, I mean, if we went out, we won't be two,
- 21:53Speaker 6: but we would be probably top five.
- 21:59Speaker 3: Yeah, it's one of those things that we are.
- 22:01Speaker 1: We're literally right now where we're at trying to find
- 22:05Speaker 1: a way to see if we can get a better
- 22:06Speaker 1: seed in the tournament, which which is just crazy. The
- 22:09Speaker 1: past couple of years, it's been, Okay, we're really good
- 22:11Speaker 1: at home. We can play with anybody at home, if
- 22:14Speaker 1: not beat anybody at home. On the road, we just
- 22:18Speaker 1: can't even matter who we play on the road, we
- 22:20Speaker 1: could not get a win. We've already beat two teams
- 22:23Speaker 1: in the top half of the Big Ten on the
- 22:26Speaker 1: road in our first four conference games in Illinois and
- 22:31Speaker 1: Ohio State. Like those are going to be really good
- 22:35Speaker 1: wins when resume looking and so yeah, it's just crazy.
- 22:41Speaker 6: It's just the scoring droughts they are, Like, I mean,
- 22:45Speaker 6: it was amazing that we won the Michigan State game.
- 22:48Speaker 6: I mean, well, Michigan State, that's like, I don't know,
- 22:52Speaker 6: I'm obviously jacked and that was a crazy game. But
- 22:55Speaker 6: Michigan State definitely definitely helped us win that game. I mean,
- 22:59Speaker 6: they had like four were in a row on force.
- 23:04Speaker 1: And I'll tell you what, Dak and I went to
- 23:05Speaker 1: the Michigan State game and then we'll have a state game.
- 23:07Speaker 1: I just watching those games from us on the offensive end,
- 23:12Speaker 1: those teams are just better. They're they're both they're better athletes,
- 23:15Speaker 1: they're better coached. Uh that a lot of teams we played,
- 23:19Speaker 1: and so like they did. That was the first one
- 23:22Speaker 1: of the first times this year where I was like, Okay,
- 23:24Speaker 1: like this team's going to guard us a lot better
- 23:27Speaker 1: than these past ones have, so let's find a way
- 23:30Speaker 1: to win it. And we did. Now it'll be we'll
- 23:34Speaker 1: see like teams we play here coming up, and Indiana.
- 23:37Speaker 3: Is another one of those, I think is very similar.
- 23:39Speaker 1: To both of them. You you're gonna have to be
- 23:44Speaker 1: even more creative on offense and adjust more and do
- 23:47Speaker 1: some different things, which is something that our football team
- 23:50Speaker 1: can't do. Is just all right, Like Hoiberg is a
- 23:54Speaker 1: is a very very good offensive mind, and that's why
- 23:57Speaker 1: our offenses looks so good.
- 23:58Speaker 3: Well, guess the teams started figuring out, Okay, here's we're doing.
- 24:01Speaker 1: They adjusted, and now it's time for the counter adjustment again. Now,
- 24:05Speaker 1: now what you hope is that your bottom half of
- 24:08Speaker 1: the Big ten teams aren't as whether it be well
- 24:11Speaker 1: coached or don't have the players to defend us the
- 24:15Speaker 1: way that Michigan State and in Ohio State did that
- 24:19Speaker 1: we can beat those teams by ten or fifteen points running.
- 24:22Speaker 1: I'll call it more base stuff than having to get
- 24:25Speaker 1: super super complex, even though our base stuff I think
- 24:27Speaker 1: is very complex and we're really good at executing it.
- 24:31Speaker 6: And I mean Ohio State we outscored their bench twenty
- 24:34Speaker 6: two to zero.
- 24:34Speaker 1: You know it wasn't like thanks to Fraker. I think
- 24:37Speaker 1: it was all him, right.
- 24:37Speaker 6: Yeah, at fifteen points, I think.
- 24:39Speaker 4: And then yeah, see somewhere else the seven came from.
- 24:43Speaker 4: But but another we haven't talked about this yet. Another
- 24:47Speaker 4: impressive party is to come back from That makes me
- 24:51Speaker 4: stay high and then to be able to focus refocus's game. Yeah,
- 24:57Speaker 4: that's the class trap game and come back. And when when.
- 24:59Speaker 2: I I heard some people say, oh, we're not when
- 25:02Speaker 2: this game is a high state, well they did.
- 25:03Speaker 6: I favored, which I thought was crazy.
- 25:08Speaker 3: I think what I think what Fred's done though, guys, and.
- 25:12Speaker 1: This is another shout out to the to the culture
- 25:14Speaker 1: and playing for each other and not playing for yourself.
- 25:17Speaker 1: They stay away well besides the Fregger like Jeremiah Fierce
- 25:22Speaker 1: thing and all that.
- 25:24Speaker 6: Like I just I'm glad he's coming off the bench.
- 25:31Speaker 1: You're a freshman. What I think this team does is
- 25:36Speaker 1: is they avoid the outside narrative and noise and andy
- 25:40Speaker 1: it doesn't matter to them. Like, you're right, there's there's
- 25:43Speaker 1: trap There's things called trap games all the time. There's
- 25:46Speaker 1: high momentum games, the post Corps, the post quark storming
- 25:52Speaker 1: games where you just you come off and lay a dud, right,
- 25:55Speaker 1: and we've done it before.
- 25:57Speaker 6: This team is like, so.
- 26:01Speaker 1: They don't that doesn't.
- 26:02Speaker 6: Fred said in his post conference in our house, and
- 26:05Speaker 6: he's like, we don't get too high, we don't get
- 26:06Speaker 6: too low.
- 26:08Speaker 1: And I'll say this, where is that? Where does that
- 26:10Speaker 1: all start? The start with Fred?
- 26:13Speaker 6: Fred.
- 26:14Speaker 3: Fred does not get too low. Fred does not get
- 26:16Speaker 3: too high.
- 26:17Speaker 1: He's very very, very very even keeled when it comes
- 26:21Speaker 1: to all that stuff. And I think that that feeds
- 26:25Speaker 1: into your team and all that. And if you can
- 26:28Speaker 1: keep the mindset focused, man, and the best thing that
- 26:31Speaker 1: happened the best thing that I thought. Hm again, take notes.
- 26:35Speaker 1: Matt rule.
- 26:38Speaker 3: Fred said in this pre Michigan State.
- 26:44Speaker 1: UH interview, he talked for like six minutes, inter question
- 26:47Speaker 1: for six minutes and said, I got to go.
- 26:49Speaker 3: I got work to do, and put his head down,
- 26:51Speaker 3: went to work. When right now.
- 26:53Speaker 1: Things are going so well, and there's every reason that
- 26:56Speaker 1: if you cared, if you were a little bit had
- 27:00Speaker 1: an ego, he'd be bragging about how good we are,
- 27:03Speaker 1: and you'd be telling it, you be, you'd be on
- 27:05Speaker 1: cloud nine.
- 27:07Speaker 6: It helps. I think it helps that when he's been there,
- 27:09Speaker 6: you know, he had real success at Iowa State. And two,
- 27:13Speaker 6: I mean he's been working for this is what y're
- 27:16Speaker 6: eight or year seven seven, So I mean he knows,
- 27:21Speaker 6: he knows this isn't like he doesn't he doesn't think
- 27:24Speaker 6: this is a feel good thing. He's not like, oh man,
- 27:26Speaker 6: this is our gear. He's like, no way, I've I've
- 27:28Speaker 6: put it in the I've put in the work, you know,
- 27:31Speaker 6: I've I've put my boots on. He've been grinding here
- 27:33Speaker 6: for six years before this year to get to this point.
- 27:36Speaker 1: And it's been it. Just like I said, he they
- 27:39Speaker 1: found the identity, they found what they want to be
- 27:42Speaker 1: and and it's it's paying off big time and.
- 27:45Speaker 4: We're and we're too good of a team to be
- 27:47Speaker 4: throwing the cord against winning the top ten team.
- 27:50Speaker 2: Right.
- 27:53Speaker 3: Seriously, that's I mean, but that's what the players kind
- 27:55Speaker 3: of said. That's their mindset. That's what that is, what
- 27:57Speaker 3: that is.
- 27:58Speaker 1: What's the beauty about this team is they they've and
- 28:01Speaker 1: they truly you can tell they believed it like they think.
- 28:04Speaker 3: They weren't just saying that to be all the sounds good.
- 28:06Speaker 1: They believed it to the players and they said that
- 28:09Speaker 1: I I yeah, plusker fans and all of that, like
- 28:14Speaker 1: we have not experience like this, and so yeah, like it.
- 28:24Speaker 3: But the ads, that's the beauty of the players.
- 28:26Speaker 1: Don't get caught up and the players it not like
- 28:28Speaker 1: it matters now the fans can just be stupid, which
- 28:31Speaker 1: we do and and you love it.
- 28:34Speaker 6: Well, this is last mass basketball comment. This has been
- 28:38Speaker 6: true for a couple of years about the Vault just
- 28:40Speaker 6: being a crazy place to win, a crazy place to play.
- 28:44Speaker 6: I told you our volleyball and football. You know, it's
- 28:47Speaker 6: great that we sell those are both have incredibly long
- 28:50Speaker 6: cell out streets. But that just means that a bunch
- 28:53Speaker 6: of old people have been going there for a long time,
- 28:55Speaker 6: and the Vault is just full of just drunk forty
- 28:59Speaker 6: year old and young you're ready to see a basketball
- 29:01Speaker 6: team win, who love betting on basketball and care of
- 29:04Speaker 6: you care about March Madness since they were, you know,
- 29:07Speaker 6: eight years old making their own brackets and they're they're ready, man.
- 29:13Speaker 6: And the Vault, the Vault's a real, real home advantage.
- 29:16Speaker 2: I didn't hear. Didn't hear once, Hey, you gotta sit
- 29:20Speaker 2: down at the Vault.
- 29:21Speaker 6: Yeah, because people there, It's not it's not an old
- 29:24Speaker 6: like there are old people that go, but I mean
- 29:26Speaker 6: it's not like you know, seventy plus year old season
- 29:30Speaker 6: ticket holders. It's when it sells out, it's freaking sold out.
- 29:35Speaker 6: And you're gonna hear it when the you know, Memorial
- 29:38Speaker 6: and the Anny sell out.
- 29:41Speaker 1: It's you know, say, volleyball still has that like because
- 29:46Speaker 1: everywhere you go, nothing our volleyball is still unique. Still
- 29:51Speaker 1: doesn't happen this sport football. We've talked about it for
- 29:55Speaker 1: the past few years, like it's not a hostile place
- 29:58Speaker 1: to play. It's just it's it's tough, but it's not
- 30:01Speaker 1: when when you when you want to go down start
- 30:03Speaker 1: ranking the Big ten toughest places that go.
- 30:05Speaker 3: No one's saying Nebraska. No one's saying with Moorials Stadium.
- 30:09Speaker 6: It's a great They say it's a great experience. And
- 30:13Speaker 6: you know, when like a team like Colorado comes in,
- 30:15Speaker 6: we work out for it. But and then volleyball the
- 30:18Speaker 6: same way. I watched a video of all the Big
- 30:20Speaker 6: ten moyball coaches saying the places they want to play
- 30:22Speaker 6: the least. Nebraska Lincoln was not one of them. It
- 30:25Speaker 6: was Wisconsin, Penn State.
- 30:28Speaker 1: Which is crazy because of how many fans we get.
- 30:30Speaker 1: But it's it's not like it's so yeah, you're it's
- 30:34Speaker 1: spot on. I think that's one of the things that
- 30:37Speaker 1: we've talked about on this podcast is the is the
- 30:39Speaker 1: fans in Nebraska just when you talk about a road environment,
- 30:44Speaker 1: we're not one of the topest one basketball. It's a
- 30:47Speaker 1: lot different. And it's it's the demographic of people, which
- 30:50Speaker 1: is what what what what you're saying.
- 30:52Speaker 6: When they get to the Oklahoma City, get to the
- 30:55Speaker 6: Oklahoma City region, it's gone down there. I'm calling it
- 30:59Speaker 6: right now.
- 30:59Speaker 3: You know, And I said, I said this to Oklahoma
- 31:01Speaker 3: City or Saint.
- 31:02Speaker 1: Louis is the other one that that, uh, I don't
- 31:05Speaker 1: know if they have what kind of seeds they have,
- 31:07Speaker 1: but and even the ones that are non drivable, the
- 31:10Speaker 1: driver ble ones will be more. Here's the thing. If
- 31:13Speaker 1: we're a if we're a top five seed in a
- 31:16Speaker 1: in a region, Oscar fans are gonna think we're taking
- 31:20Speaker 1: I'm in this bucket. We're not going for a Thursday
- 31:23Speaker 1: Friday game and hoping that we win. You're booking an
- 31:26Speaker 1: all weekend ticket because you're saying we're different. And when
- 31:31Speaker 1: you if you win Thursday, you're playing Saturday. So you're
- 31:33Speaker 1: booking and and and therefore you're planning more. Therefore, you're
- 31:37Speaker 1: it's not gonna be You're gonna get a lot more
- 31:39Speaker 1: fans there for that first game because you're thinking we're
- 31:42Speaker 1: going for two games, not just really so that that
- 31:47Speaker 1: is that's another perk of being the higher seed, the
- 31:51Speaker 1: better because I think that that literally will be what happens,
- 31:53Speaker 1: and it'll be nuts wherever we go. If it's okay,
- 31:56Speaker 1: if it's okay, see oh boy, yeah, okay.
- 31:59Speaker 6: Last last for his switching football as my my brother
- 32:02Speaker 6: who's a season ticket holder, this season ticket holder for
- 32:04Speaker 6: the last oh I don't know, five six years. He said,
- 32:10Speaker 6: we're no longer the feel good story. We are the
- 32:12Speaker 6: story in college basketball. I don't know. It kind of
- 32:16Speaker 6: feels that way when the when the college basketball subreddit
- 32:20Speaker 6: they're talking about Nebraska basketball feels good.
- 32:25Speaker 1: I agree. More national things i've seen and just like
- 32:28Speaker 1: it's not a feel good it's like a no, they're
- 32:30Speaker 1: they're here.
- 32:31Speaker 2: I got one more comment on this.
- 32:33Speaker 4: What ten years ago someone said, all right, what are
- 32:37Speaker 4: you gonna bet here that a basketball team would be
- 32:39Speaker 4: ranked top ten before the football team?
- 32:41Speaker 2: What would you have bet.
- 32:45Speaker 6: Ten years ago? Let's see what it would have been
- 32:46Speaker 6: that we can get it a Scott Frost era. Yeah,
- 32:50Speaker 6: at the end of Vike Riley Gosh, I don't know.
- 32:55Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 32:55Speaker 2: A leg I would have been a leg probably.
- 33:01Speaker 3: Yeah, Okay, Well that was fun. I think we've said
- 33:06Speaker 3: one more thing about basketball, like nine times.
- 33:08Speaker 6: I know, I got I know I was displaying. I
- 33:11Speaker 6: missed the first twenty five minutes.
- 33:12Speaker 2: I was ready to go, trying not to get the football.
- 33:15Speaker 2: That's the thing.
- 33:18Speaker 3: Well, I don't know where to begin. I guess for football.
- 33:23Speaker 1: I've heard a lot of podcasts and people just like
- 33:27Speaker 1: brush over the the Utah game I don't really want
- 33:32Speaker 1: to do that. I want to talk about it here
- 33:33Speaker 1: a little bit, because the narrative was, well, we get killed,
- 33:38Speaker 1: doesn't matter. My game didn't matter. No, it doesn't matter.
- 33:42Speaker 1: If we were in the game and it was a
- 33:44Speaker 1: game started, it didn't matter. And that's not right. Uh.
- 33:47Speaker 1: I think last year of the Boston College game, we
- 33:50Speaker 1: talked about how much it did matter when we won
- 33:52Speaker 1: and how big of a win it was and all
- 33:53Speaker 1: that stuff. And I'm a little bit under the you know,
- 33:57Speaker 1: the the mindset of if you're playing a game, okay,
- 34:03Speaker 1: have a little bit of pride in competition and and
- 34:07Speaker 1: griat of wanting to win it. Yes, there's a lot
- 34:10Speaker 1: of people transferring, and yes, the narrative around college football,
- 34:12Speaker 1: as bowl games are becoming less and less important outside
- 34:16Speaker 1: of the playoff and the postseason, college football is going
- 34:20Speaker 1: to look very different in ten years. So I get
- 34:23Speaker 1: all that. But what happened out in Vegas was just
- 34:28Speaker 1: an exact summary of how this season's gone for a
- 34:34Speaker 1: lot of games. And it did not make anybody feel
- 34:39Speaker 1: good coming out of that game. And the sad part
- 34:45Speaker 1: was the game went. If you would if you would
- 34:50Speaker 1: have said Yevna rass is gonna lose forty four to
- 34:51Speaker 1: twenty two, you'd be like, yeah, it's about right, and
- 34:54Speaker 1: everybody expected it to be that way, and we met expectations.
- 34:58Speaker 1: It's not good. It's not good. I think. I think that.
- 35:00Speaker 1: That's my takeaway is what happened. Nothing coming out of
- 35:04Speaker 1: that game was like gave you any more sort of
- 35:07Speaker 1: hope or promise after.
- 35:09Speaker 3: The Penn State and Iowa game bad. You can't think
- 35:11Speaker 3: of one thing.
- 35:12Speaker 6: There wasn't like, there wasn't like a moat where you're like, oh,
- 35:14Speaker 6: this player stood out, not even like that. I mean that,
- 35:19Speaker 6: and that's saying something. And I mean we had obviously
- 35:22Speaker 6: Emma Johnston play, which is you know, huge for our offense.
- 35:27Speaker 6: But outside of that, we were kind of full strength.
- 35:31Speaker 6: And Utah had their two best defensive linement out, their
- 35:34Speaker 6: best offensive lineman out, their head coach gone, and we
- 35:37Speaker 6: got fucking steamroll in the second half. I mean, we
- 35:42Speaker 6: came out, we ran the ball like eight times in
- 35:45Speaker 6: a row, scored and then we scored again.
- 35:50Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's fourteen to fourteen.
- 35:52Speaker 1: At one point, fourteen to seven, we were up seven
- 35:55Speaker 1: oh seven seven, fourteen to seven. Yeah, and we just uh.
- 36:00Speaker 6: I mean our defense looked like ship, which I mean
- 36:02Speaker 6: all year I've thought our defense was the scary part
- 36:06Speaker 6: I had. The offense hasn't really bothered me, but I
- 36:10Speaker 6: mean the things we learned. It wasn't like, oh, maybe
- 36:13Speaker 6: this guy is good. It was Latif is not good.
- 36:17Speaker 1: Yeah, there were some things that we learned. I would
- 36:19Speaker 1: say more things confirmed from.
- 36:21Speaker 6: My mind, like, you're right, I don't know.
- 36:24Speaker 1: I didn't learn a whole lot.
- 36:26Speaker 3: There's some things that I'm like, Okay, I think, yes,
- 36:28Speaker 3: it was.
- 36:29Speaker 6: There were people out there telling you that Latif was
- 36:31Speaker 6: better than Deliverrial dek what and that he should start.
- 36:37Speaker 6: And I watched it and I was like, those people
- 36:39Speaker 6: don't know fucking football because this guy freaking sucks.
- 36:42Speaker 3: I will say Dak doesn't know football, so that is true.
- 36:46Speaker 6: Wow, there was. I did not feel good about him
- 36:51Speaker 6: going into next year.
- 36:53Speaker 1: Latif Latifa is a good backup. You'd like you like
- 36:56Speaker 1: to have that guy as a sure, like he's a
- 36:59Speaker 1: he's serviceable, he's not going to come in and turn
- 37:01Speaker 1: it over.
- 37:01Speaker 6: But like I'm not saying I want him. I'm not
- 37:04Speaker 6: saying I don't want one on the team. But right,
- 37:06Speaker 6: if you're like, hey, real, this is our guy next year.
- 37:09Speaker 1: I'm hoping. I'm hoping that he played bad enough that
- 37:12Speaker 1: it was obvious to him and his agent whatever you
- 37:15Speaker 1: want to.
- 37:15Speaker 6: Call him that don't go asking for money.
- 37:17Speaker 1: Right, don't ask for money, and you're not going to
- 37:19Speaker 1: go play anywhere else. I mean that that's the good news.
- 37:21Speaker 4: So yes, well you'll you'll find out quick here if
- 37:23Speaker 4: he's going to leave or not, Like it'll be next
- 37:26Speaker 4: two or three days if he's going to leave.
- 37:28Speaker 1: Yeah, and it looks like he's not. I mean the
- 37:30Speaker 1: portal just to know, January second through January sixteenth is
- 37:35Speaker 1: the portal, So you get two weeks here, we're five
- 37:38Speaker 1: days in under that.
- 37:40Speaker 3: The other thing I guess from the Utah game that
- 37:43Speaker 3: again was confirmed.
- 37:44Speaker 1: It was one of those things that nobody really talked about,
- 37:47Speaker 1: but it's became very clear in this one. And then
- 37:50Speaker 1: you start thinking, yeah, it happened in a lot of
- 37:52Speaker 1: our latest games. Like Dana Holgerson, we have thought and
- 37:59Speaker 1: I think still is a pretty good offensive mind, understands
- 38:04Speaker 1: the game from an excess NOE standpoint fairly well. But
- 38:08Speaker 1: what kind of eye opened in this game? Big time?
- 38:12Speaker 1: But then going back to other games is he can't
- 38:14Speaker 1: he doesn't know how to adjust. But then that did
- 38:17Speaker 1: make me start questioning how good of an offensive mind
- 38:19Speaker 1: is he? Does he really under you know, we got
- 38:21Speaker 1: he was and he's known to be an offensive coach.
- 38:24Speaker 1: That's not that's not making something up from a coultorable narrative.
- 38:28Speaker 1: So I saw something from Stu Manji. He's a really
- 38:30Speaker 1: good follow on Twitter. It does a lot of just
- 38:33Speaker 1: Husker stats and analytics for the last seven games of
- 38:39Speaker 1: the year from Sybe from the Minnesota game through the
- 38:43Speaker 1: Utah game. Our first two drives of the game yielded
- 38:45Speaker 1: in fifty two points. When you take garbage time out
- 38:49Speaker 1: all of our remaining drives, we've got fifty three points,
- 38:54Speaker 1: so basically equivalent. And to put that in perspective too,
- 38:59Speaker 1: that's fourteen the rest is forty one drives and they
- 39:04Speaker 1: basically result the same amount of points. And and you
- 39:07Speaker 1: can call that scripted versus unscripted. And what that tells
- 39:11Speaker 1: you is Dana is a good enough offensive coach. With
- 39:14Speaker 1: the pieces that we have which or don't have, he
- 39:17Speaker 1: can say here's how we're here's how we're going to
- 39:19Speaker 1: attack this defense. Based on watching the film and here's
- 39:23Speaker 1: how we're gonna go score.
- 39:25Speaker 3: We've done that. We did that. Then the defense comes
- 39:29Speaker 3: out and they go, okay, here's how Nebraska's beating us.
- 39:31Speaker 1: They did X y Z. Dana, they change their defense.
- 39:34Speaker 1: Dana goes, well, I don't know what else to do.
- 39:38Speaker 6: I just don't and I don't understand that, because like
- 39:40Speaker 6: when we scored our first two drives, we just ran
- 39:43Speaker 6: it down their freaking throats, and I don't know how
- 39:44Speaker 6: you don't go into you. We're gonna ren down their throats.
- 39:46Speaker 6: They're going to adjust. This is our this is when
- 39:49Speaker 6: we switch. I don't understand that you don't have that
- 39:51Speaker 6: plan in.
- 39:51Speaker 1: Place, and yeah, I don't. I don't. I don't understand
- 39:55Speaker 1: the ex's and know the football, I mean like most people,
- 39:58Speaker 1: and I don't want to try to and nderstand what
- 40:00Speaker 1: that looks like. But we don't. We don't have as
- 40:07Speaker 1: we don't have a counter adjustment to their adjustment. And
- 40:09Speaker 1: then that it's been evident on offense.
- 40:12Speaker 6: Well, and part of that could have been it's like,
- 40:13Speaker 6: all right, they're not gonna let them run the ball.
- 40:15Speaker 6: They don't have a Johnson. We're gonna make Latif throw it.
- 40:18Speaker 6: And then latif kept throwing it behind or in front of,
- 40:21Speaker 6: or over his receivers.
- 40:23Speaker 1: Right, and that and that I'm gonna as not that's
- 40:26Speaker 1: as a very fan media assumption. There's obviously x's and
- 40:30Speaker 1: those reasons why our run game, you know whatever, whatever
- 40:35Speaker 1: type of run schemes that we were drawing up there
- 40:38Speaker 1: that were gashing off Utah to start, then they were
- 40:44Speaker 1: able to go over Utah defense, go over the side
- 40:45Speaker 1: of that. Okay, they're beating us because of this. It's
- 40:47Speaker 1: a miss okay, buddy movie. This is where this is
- 40:51Speaker 1: our adjustment. Okay, now you start, you start doing that,
- 40:54Speaker 1: we go, oh, dang it, now they're stopping it, or
- 40:58Speaker 1: now they moved, now they did this. It's like we
- 41:01Speaker 1: don't have another answer anymore. That's concerning, Like, especially with
- 41:05Speaker 1: our team, it's it's very concerning. So yeah, I mean,
- 41:11Speaker 1: that's the closest thing I guess I learned from the game.
- 41:14Speaker 1: But I think we kind of knew that too, because
- 41:16Speaker 1: we saw that against Iowa. We saw it against Penn
- 41:18Speaker 1: State where we did have a good first driver too,
- 41:20Speaker 1: and then things fell apart anything else from the I
- 41:31Speaker 1: do I think it'd be it'd be I would say
- 41:34Speaker 1: a fun episode, but it'd be good to kind of
- 41:35Speaker 1: go back and revisit the whole year and don't want
- 41:39Speaker 1: to go too much into it, but I guess if
- 41:41Speaker 1: you guys have one takeaway or a couple of takeaways
- 41:45Speaker 1: from the year, and I can kind of go first
- 41:47Speaker 1: here while you're thinking, I think looking back on it
- 41:51Speaker 1: from a season as a whole. The big word that
- 41:57Speaker 1: I'm going to use here was this opportunity from from
- 42:01Speaker 1: a scheduling standpoint and just what could have been in
- 42:07Speaker 1: year three under Matt Ruhle, and and then leading into
- 42:13Speaker 1: very very very very scared for the future because of
- 42:16Speaker 1: momentum and and the things moving forward is general hope
- 42:22Speaker 1: for this team. You know, you start the year thinking, okay,
- 42:28Speaker 1: like Dana Holders and Dylan Rayola the mesh, they finally
- 42:33Speaker 1: got a whole off season together. You come out, you know,
- 42:36Speaker 1: you play some pretty bad teams, and Johnson looks like, yeah,
- 42:42Speaker 1: you you tell me, Emma Johnson is an All American
- 42:45Speaker 1: running back. You're going, gosh, are we ten and two?
- 42:49Speaker 1: Are we eleven?
- 42:50Speaker 6: And our quarterback through for seventy well, our starting quarterback.
- 42:56Speaker 6: You know Anny touchdowns?
- 42:58Speaker 1: You know you you you do you knew our defense
- 43:03Speaker 1: is probably gonna take a step back. I remember saying
- 43:07Speaker 1: that pretty early on, if not before the season. I said,
- 43:10Speaker 1: our defense is probably gonna take a step back. But
- 43:12Speaker 1: they can't fall off a cliff right. Our defense was
- 43:15Speaker 1: a seven or eight out of ten last year. They
- 43:17Speaker 1: can maybe fall to a season, but we can't fall
- 43:19Speaker 1: to a two or three out of ten. We can't
- 43:21Speaker 1: do that, and that's what happened. So the looking at
- 43:23Speaker 1: the season as a whole, it's just overall an opportunity.
- 43:26Speaker 1: We have the schedule, we have the chance to really
- 43:31Speaker 1: take a step forward from a momentum standpoint, and the
- 43:34Speaker 1: program then hopefully can get the next level of recruits,
- 43:39Speaker 1: the next thing to elevate us to being a top
- 43:43Speaker 1: twenty five team consistently. And the way the season ended
- 43:47Speaker 1: it actually is the exact opposite of that.
- 43:51Speaker 3: And leading into the portal and all this stuff.
- 43:54Speaker 1: It's not good. And that's to the point where I'm like,
- 43:57Speaker 1: that's the question we asked late in the year, do
- 44:00Speaker 1: you think Matt Rule can well win a playoff game
- 44:03Speaker 1: in Nebraska or can win a playoff game in Nebraska.
- 44:06Speaker 1: Maybe it's a better way of phrasing nifty stays here,
- 44:08Speaker 1: I just right now, it's it's the answer to me,
- 44:12Speaker 1: that's no. And and I think Matt Rule is at
- 44:15Speaker 1: the point where he's questioning to a lot of things,
- 44:20Speaker 1: as he should be.
- 44:26Speaker 6: I think big take away from the season, gosh, I
- 44:35Speaker 6: don't know. I mean that pretty much well sums it up.
- 44:37Speaker 6: I mean, my I just remember my biggest thread throughout
- 44:41Speaker 6: the year was just the defense. You know, was it
- 44:47Speaker 6: Tony White was the you know, was he the secret sauce?
- 44:52Speaker 6: I don't know. It was just our defense is bad
- 44:55Speaker 6: all year and the few games our defense played well, our
- 44:59Speaker 6: offense did not compete. I mean, once a Dylan Yola
- 45:03Speaker 6: went out, you could just you could see where the
- 45:06Speaker 6: season was going at that point. You know, we lose
- 45:10Speaker 6: a close one, close ish one to the USC. This
- 45:13Speaker 6: is like, okay, this is gonna be what we expected.
- 45:15Speaker 6: But losing to all the ranked opponents. Yeah, I mean
- 45:19Speaker 6: the takeaway from the air is Matt Rule gets the extension.
- 45:23Speaker 6: But is you know, will he be here in two years?
- 45:26Speaker 6: That's like, you know, it's that's where we're at. It's like,
- 45:30Speaker 6: I don't know. We Luckily for him, Penn State had
- 45:32Speaker 6: a job opening, and now Troy Dan Danon has egg
- 45:37Speaker 6: on his face, so he's gonna be like, hey man,
- 45:39Speaker 6: you got it, Like I just gave you an extension.
- 45:41Speaker 6: You know, you're you're moving people around like we're not
- 45:44Speaker 6: fucking around anymore, Like you have to do something because
- 45:48Speaker 6: I just gave you more money.
- 45:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 45:52Speaker 4: The biggest the biggest takeaway I think is just how
- 45:56Speaker 4: horrible dose last three yeah, four games? The bowl game
- 46:01Speaker 4: Iowa Penn State. Am I missing one in there? No,
- 46:07Speaker 4: it would be those last three games. How horrible they look?
- 46:10Speaker 4: Just terrible way and the end the season and the
- 46:12Speaker 4: one season and no no momentum at all or the offseason.
- 46:16Speaker 2: It's just horrible.
- 46:17Speaker 4: And the defense, like you guys mentioned, is the main
- 46:20Speaker 4: reason why they got gash all three of those games.
- 46:23Speaker 4: And it's offensive, defensive, both sides of the ball, just
- 46:26Speaker 4: having no adjustments. It's which comes back to the coaching staff.
- 46:31Speaker 4: I think that's that's the main point right there is
- 46:33Speaker 4: there's no faith, I think any more in the coaching
- 46:35Speaker 4: staff to get get things done or just But then
- 46:38Speaker 4: there's one side if you guys wanna go positive here
- 46:41Speaker 4: come out of the season. One side of the ball
- 46:44Speaker 4: where we can be positive is how good the special
- 46:47Speaker 4: teams will all right there, we don't feel yeah, at
- 46:53Speaker 4: least at least we don't got to worry about going
- 46:54Speaker 4: the off season the best teams at all.
- 46:58Speaker 1: You're right, we got know that that piece and the
- 47:01Speaker 1: other thing I think that you could say that you
- 47:04Speaker 1: can put progress, progress and quotes around it is uh,
- 47:09Speaker 1: you know, winning winning one score game or coming from
- 47:12Speaker 1: behind and doing that, you get that call it a
- 47:15Speaker 1: monkey off your back. I mean, maybe it's just a
- 47:18Speaker 1: sign of being a little bit better. It's hard the
- 47:21Speaker 1: way the season ended, but we did do that as well.
- 47:25Speaker 1: I always thought, you know, it's not it's not a curse,
- 47:29Speaker 1: but people, you know, gets that was the narrative and
- 47:32Speaker 1: we couldn't win a one score game, and so we
- 47:34Speaker 1: did do that.
- 47:35Speaker 3: We showed that we're not just cursed for life.
- 47:37Speaker 1: And yeah, Dak special teams, bet you got better like
- 47:40Speaker 1: you helped that and and why it's coaching. It's coaching.
- 47:48Speaker 1: Mike Eckler is a good special teams Coach's very good
- 47:52Speaker 1: at doing that. The other sides of the ball, I
- 47:56Speaker 1: don't know. I just I don't. I still just don't
- 47:59Speaker 1: know that that rule is a good football coach. I
- 48:01Speaker 1: think he can. He's a good at at.
- 48:06Speaker 6: I think he's a good recruiter.
- 48:07Speaker 1: I think he's a good, good leader of men. I
- 48:12Speaker 1: wouldn't go good recruiter because I think he's I don't
- 48:15Speaker 1: think he's a very good identifier of talent. I think
- 48:18Speaker 1: he's good at it. I think he's good at selling.
- 48:21Speaker 1: He's a good salesman. He's good at selling the pieces
- 48:23Speaker 1: that two players, I mean is what I'm talking about,
- 48:27Speaker 1: more to get people motivated and ready to go. I
- 48:31Speaker 1: think he's good at doing That is what his best quality.
- 48:34Speaker 1: I don't know that he's a good football coach. I
- 48:35Speaker 1: don't know that he's a good identifier of what needs
- 48:38Speaker 1: to happen, which goes to a lack of knowing what
- 48:41Speaker 1: he wants as a football coach.
- 48:44Speaker 6: And I think I know what he wants. He wants
- 48:46Speaker 6: to run the ball, I mean physical on the lines,
- 48:49Speaker 6: but his behavior and recruiting.
- 48:50Speaker 3: And you think, I mean, you think we think that's
- 48:55Speaker 3: what he wants.
- 48:56Speaker 1: I but so there's one thing of knowing what you want,
- 48:58Speaker 1: but then how do you how do you execute that? Again,
- 49:02Speaker 1: to go back to the basketball team, Fred was able
- 49:05Speaker 1: to figure that out and and it's paying off. I
- 49:09Speaker 1: don't know if Matt rule you can ever get there.
- 49:12Speaker 1: I don't think his demeanor and his mannerisms and yeah,
- 49:16Speaker 1: I'm not going to dive into the backwards hat Matt thing.
- 49:20Speaker 2: Into it.
- 49:21Speaker 4: I don't know why it pissed me off so much.
- 49:23Speaker 4: Called me Colin coward, but that pissed me off. It's like, dude,
- 49:27Speaker 4: it's like it's like you just know you're nonchalant about
- 49:30Speaker 4: like it looks like you just don't care.
- 49:31Speaker 1: I know. It's there's no questions on what he's trying
- 49:35Speaker 1: to do. He's trying to like be the cool because
- 49:41Speaker 1: he was position coach. So he's saying he's backwards hat
- 49:43Speaker 1: Matt when he's coaching the defensive line, and then you know,
- 49:46Speaker 1: you become the head coach, turned the hat around, you're
- 49:47Speaker 1: now the CEO. Back to that he's he's trying to
- 49:51Speaker 1: bring a little bit of like I call it just
- 49:54Speaker 1: toughness and and and cool.
- 49:57Speaker 3: Guy like.
- 50:00Speaker 6: It.
- 50:00Speaker 1: Backfires are when you don't win and it looks stupid
- 50:03Speaker 1: and that's what happened, and then you get caught with
- 50:06Speaker 1: your pants down and you get laughed at. That's what happened,
- 50:10Speaker 1: and it wasn't the time place to do it. I
- 50:13Speaker 1: like I said, it's stupid, it's dumb. He tried, he
- 50:18Speaker 1: was trying to bring a little bit of just fire
- 50:20Speaker 1: and toughness to it.
- 50:23Speaker 3: Didn't work. That's what's scary is that.
- 50:29Speaker 1: I don't want to say he's lost the team yet,
- 50:31Speaker 1: but that's that's words headed guy. Feel like that's what's scary.
- 50:35Speaker 1: It's words headed where he's kind of on his last
- 50:39Speaker 1: little bit of burraw of hope and glimmer what can
- 50:42Speaker 1: I do to save this team?
- 50:44Speaker 6: Now you say that, but as far as.
- 50:47Speaker 3: The portal goes, let's talk portal.
- 50:50Speaker 6: We really haven't had that many people who had significant
- 50:55Speaker 6: stabs snaps enter the portal. So you know, you're talking
- 50:57Speaker 6: about losing the team. It's like, well, at Donarla, Kana Davis,
- 51:01Speaker 6: and Malcolm Hartzog the rest of them are you know,
- 51:07Speaker 6: rotational players at best.
- 51:10Speaker 3: So it's like, well, here's here's what I might take
- 51:14Speaker 3: away on that too.
- 51:14Speaker 1: Though. The other thing that we talked about this year
- 51:17Speaker 1: is how young we are, and especially in the DIVA
- 51:20Speaker 1: just side of the ball, like we're young, we're young. Okay,
- 51:24Speaker 1: then if that's if that's the narrative, then we better
- 51:27Speaker 1: be developing them and making them better players. And a
- 51:30Speaker 1: lot of these guys are younger players. A lot of
- 51:32Speaker 1: the names don't even really know that enter the portal. Well,
- 51:35Speaker 1: if that's not happening, okay, so then you can don't
- 51:39Speaker 1: use that narrative anymore of us being young. And then
- 51:44Speaker 1: that is it's part of just the transfer portal era
- 51:46Speaker 1: of college football. You kind of take a stance on that.
- 51:50Speaker 1: And if you're not going to develop, well, then you
- 51:51Speaker 1: better bring guys in the portal. And if you start
- 51:53Speaker 1: going down the list of positions that we need to
- 51:56Speaker 1: bring guys in the portal, you hit on about all
- 51:57Speaker 1: of The only one that I can say maybe we
- 52:00Speaker 1: don't need is.
- 52:01Speaker 3: A kicker wide receiver. Kicker, I was gonna say tight ends.
- 52:05Speaker 1: I think we're good another year with Lynden Meyer and
- 52:07Speaker 1: Carter Nelson probably, and then wide receiver maybe is the
- 52:10Speaker 1: next closest where I wouldn't be spending money. I'd be
- 52:13Speaker 1: spending money elsewhere. But other than that, you want to
- 52:16Speaker 1: go down the list and check the box of portal
- 52:19Speaker 1: guys that we need to improve our roster about everywhere else,
- 52:22Speaker 1: and then to also just a sign of we're not
- 52:24Speaker 1: very good and what we have and that goes to
- 52:27Speaker 1: is this year four Matt Ruhle coming into it. That
- 52:30Speaker 1: goes to what he's been able to identify as talent
- 52:33Speaker 1: to develop as a recruiting class. And now we don't
- 52:37Speaker 1: even hear about our recruiting class being whatever the hell
- 52:39Speaker 1: we were one hundred and something ninety something like. Okay,
- 52:43Speaker 1: so that's not us. Now we're a portal team. Okay,
- 52:45Speaker 1: let's see. Because but I think it's the last resort
- 52:48Speaker 1: thing and I we're gonna we're gonna rely on the
- 52:51Speaker 1: portal where Matt rule is really what guys have we
- 52:54Speaker 1: hit on in the portal?
- 52:57Speaker 2: None?
- 52:59Speaker 6: I mean I wouldn't say none. There was some defense, like.
- 53:04Speaker 2: Isaiah was a hit.
- 53:08Speaker 1: Guys we can say they're hits. But they're all just
- 53:10Speaker 1: very none of them.
- 53:11Speaker 2: It's average.
- 53:12Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a product of around. Players around there all
- 53:15Speaker 1: are just we're just so average. They're all everybody's so average.
- 53:19Speaker 1: Now that is a product of everything too. So yeah,
- 53:22Speaker 1: you put them in the right system and and you
- 53:25Speaker 1: coach them the right way, and you have the right
- 53:27Speaker 1: play they looked at, but everybody they're so average. McColo
- 53:30Speaker 1: was a very average portal guy. Spindler was a very
- 53:34Speaker 1: average offensive Linemanaia Hunter was a very average receiver in
- 53:38Speaker 1: the portal. Jeff Simms was a very poor quarterback. Yeah, easy,
- 53:49Speaker 1: very poor. So so that's what that's the point. Yeah,
- 53:53Speaker 1: you can call them hits, but we can't just be
- 53:56Speaker 1: average and we're gonna be average playing We're very average
- 53:58Speaker 1: team this year and we played very average. And so
- 54:01Speaker 1: when you play better teams than us, which we don't
- 54:03Speaker 1: look good. So that that to me is where gotta
- 54:08Speaker 1: you gotta gotta you gotta identify the diamond and the roughs.
- 54:11Speaker 1: Fred Hoiberg's identified some diamond in the rough guys. Dak
- 54:16Speaker 1: and I talked earlier. Austin Pryce Sanford. He wasn't great
- 54:20Speaker 1: at Iowa. He was solid, and he coming in I
- 54:22Speaker 1: didn't know what he Maybe he'd start play some shoot it.
- 54:25Speaker 1: Pryce Standford's are arguably second best player on the team.
- 54:28Speaker 1: Brayden Fraker, who the hell knew that? Like I's doing
- 54:33Speaker 1: so much for us, Like those are the type of
- 54:35Speaker 1: guys that the football team can never, never find and
- 54:40Speaker 1: hit on because we don't know how to identify who
- 54:42Speaker 1: these people are. That goes back to I don't think
- 54:44Speaker 1: we know what the hell we want Like we don't.
- 54:46Speaker 3: We're so And that also is a product of.
- 54:53Speaker 1: Real mentioned the John Butler thing and how that all
- 54:56Speaker 1: went down, how the three three five was kind of
- 54:58Speaker 1: forced upon him from the Tony White era onto John Butler.
- 55:02Speaker 3: That wasn't necessarily what he wanted to do. Well, yeah,
- 55:04Speaker 3: but that that bans it up, but a decision that
- 55:07Speaker 3: Rule made.
- 55:08Speaker 6: Okay, don't hire the guy who doesn't want to coach
- 55:11Speaker 6: the scheme that you want to run and you wonder
- 55:17Speaker 6: all of that stuff.
- 55:17Speaker 1: There's all there are all problems and issues of not
- 55:19Speaker 1: knowing what you want Matt rule, What do you want?
- 55:21Speaker 1: Are you going to turn it over Dana or not?
- 55:24Speaker 1: You want to run the ball? Okay, then run the
- 55:26Speaker 1: ball and do it. But then the data, what does
- 55:29Speaker 1: Dana want to do? Like, I think that's all just
- 55:30Speaker 1: an identity a problem that nobody really knows what the
- 55:34Speaker 1: hell is going on, and think aboutw the players feel.
- 55:37Speaker 4: So if he's if he's wanting to stay around here longer,
- 55:40Speaker 4: I think this offseason he needs to. This is the
- 55:45Speaker 4: biggest thing he needs to do is figure out what
- 55:48Speaker 4: he wants to do identity wise and stick to it
- 55:52Speaker 4: if he wants to be here long term, and that's
- 55:55Speaker 4: and that's what's what needs to be because there's the
- 55:58Speaker 4: two or three years he's been here. There's just nothing
- 56:01Speaker 4: I can say. What he wants to do. No one knows.
- 56:03Speaker 1: But what's funny with that is, though, are the players
- 56:07Speaker 1: going to even believe in what he wants to do anymore?
- 56:09Speaker 1: Or does he have to turn it over to his
- 56:11Speaker 1: assistance and say all right, like I don't know, I
- 56:14Speaker 1: don't know the answer that. I don't think he knows
- 56:16Speaker 1: the answer to that. I think that's his decision, but
- 56:18Speaker 1: he's he's messed up that decision so many times, which
- 56:23Speaker 1: is why I think things are so concerning.
- 56:27Speaker 3: Some of the players we have gotten in here.
- 56:29Speaker 1: And I'm just gonna mention him, and I think it's
- 56:34Speaker 1: I'm not gonna say pointless, but.
- 56:37Speaker 3: Until we establish the line of scrimmage.
- 56:40Speaker 1: And I thought I'd get more excited about getting offensive
- 56:43Speaker 1: linemen in, but I've also improve it mode to even
- 56:48Speaker 1: these guys, I don't know how good they are. I
- 56:50Speaker 1: haven't really watched a lot of film on him. I
- 56:52Speaker 1: don't know Brendan Black, offensive lineman junior from Iowa State.
- 56:56Speaker 1: And then Tree Babbelaide from South care Line of sophomore
- 57:01Speaker 1: and are coming in here.
- 57:02Speaker 3: Purchett stay, which I think is big.
- 57:04Speaker 6: So far.
- 57:05Speaker 1: I think that's good that he's staying. You know, I
- 57:09Speaker 1: think you hope these guys help us. I think they could.
- 57:11Speaker 1: I don't know. We got some winebackers, Owen Chambliss from
- 57:16Speaker 1: San Diego State coming with our a decordinator, Will Hawthorne
- 57:22Speaker 1: from Iowa State, freshman Dexter Foster from Oregon State to
- 57:26Speaker 1: sophomore safety Dwayne McDougall from San Diego State also coming over.
- 57:31Speaker 1: And then that's it so far. I mean.
- 57:36Speaker 6: Colandria that no, I that's it.
- 57:41Speaker 1: That's it. Besides it, I say that for a last
- 57:43Speaker 1: I'm positioning everybody talks about we just better mention the
- 57:51Speaker 1: the Kenny Minchi era solid like three days. That was awesome.
- 57:57Speaker 1: I saw.
- 57:58Speaker 6: The rumor was was that we have a million, and
- 58:00Speaker 6: then Kentucky came out of me. They offered him two
- 58:02Speaker 6: million left and we're like, we're not giving you two million.
- 58:07Speaker 1: Those are all decisions now in collegeable that you got
- 58:09Speaker 1: to make.
- 58:13Speaker 3: You're gonna say how much are you worth? How much
- 58:15Speaker 3: can you pay them?
- 58:15Speaker 1: Where are you spending your money, but apparently money's not
- 58:19Speaker 1: an issue here. We have all the resources we need
- 58:21Speaker 1: according to Matt rules.
- 58:22Speaker 6: So we have all the resources, but you don't want
- 58:25Speaker 6: to spend it on a quarterback. So you said, it's like, hey,
- 58:28Speaker 6: we're spending a million dollars for a quarterback.
- 58:32Speaker 1: Yeah, and all the resources means you have unlimited money
- 58:36Speaker 1: in my mind, so you can spend as much as
- 58:38Speaker 1: you want. Everybody. I know it's not true, but again,
- 58:41Speaker 1: don't say that crap stupid.
- 58:43Speaker 6: I think you said we have all the resources we
- 58:45Speaker 6: need because Torey Dana said, hey, man, our boosters are
- 58:49Speaker 6: pissed you're not winning. You can't come out here and be.
- 58:51Speaker 1: Like, oh, you don't have all the resources you need
- 58:53Speaker 1: because you're Yeah, it's just stupid.
- 58:56Speaker 3: Against don't say stupid stuff.
- 59:00Speaker 6: I think he was told to say. That's what I think.
- 59:03Speaker 1: Yeah, thoughts on Calandria, I think he'll look worse than
- 59:10Speaker 1: he's hyped.
- 59:10Speaker 2: Up to be.
- 59:12Speaker 1: He can run the ball, and I think he'll be
- 59:15Speaker 1: worse than he's hyped up to be. I just I
- 59:20Speaker 1: didn't care what quarterback we were going to get. He's
- 59:22Speaker 1: not going to look like everybody thinks he's going to look.
- 59:27Speaker 6: Because it steps down from.
- 59:30Speaker 1: I just I don't think Dak. I agree. I think
- 59:33Speaker 1: his the style of his play, I completely agree, that's
- 59:36Speaker 1: the style of quarterback that I like. He's a higher
- 59:39Speaker 1: from what I've seen, He's a higher risk, high reward guy.
- 59:43Speaker 1: He kind of just plays like a call. He plays
- 59:46Speaker 1: like a ball or he just kind of goes out
- 59:47Speaker 1: there and rolls it and a lot of energy energy
- 59:51Speaker 1: and he'll you know, he's one of those guys that
- 59:53Speaker 1: isn't afraid to take a hit. He's a good runner.
- 59:56Speaker 1: He can throw it on the run. Like I think, Yes,
- 59:58Speaker 1: the style, I degree is kind of what we like.
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: But he's gonna look worse when he comes here because
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: I don't believe this coaching staff will know how to
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: handle I just don't think so. I guys, he's not.
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: He looked at it. I was trying to see where
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: he rank. He's like the seventeenth best portal quarterback out there.
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: Minshe was around ten. Ryle is eight from just a
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: general public national evaluator of talent. I do think the
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: style that he plays is better than seventeenth in the
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: transfer quarterback. I do think that, but it's not like
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: we just went out and got Brendan Foresby.
- 1:00:33Speaker 6: He didn't go that's the level quarterback we're willing to
- 1:00:36Speaker 6: pay for. I think we were willing to pay Dylan
- 1:00:38Speaker 6: and all his three and a half million every year,
- 1:00:41Speaker 6: and he probably wanted more, his brother wanted more, and
- 1:00:44Speaker 6: they're like, well, we're not going to pay Dayton. And
- 1:00:47Speaker 6: so the Dayton was out and then Dylan's like, well
- 1:00:49Speaker 6: I want another million, and they're like, we can't pay you.
- 1:00:52Speaker 6: Three and a half is already more than we should
- 1:00:53Speaker 6: be paying a quarterback. And so I think ultimately they're like,
- 1:00:56Speaker 6: we're going to get a ten to fifteen thran quarter back.
- 1:01:01Speaker 6: We're gonna pay a million dollars. We're not gonna pay
- 1:01:03Speaker 6: anything more. And then she got his million. Then they're like,
- 1:01:05Speaker 6: actually give you two and like we're not doing that.
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: We'll see how it pays out. Like I agree. I
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: always said we need to spend our money elsewhere on lineman,
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: both sides of the ball. And it looks like maybe
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: that's kind of the direction we're heading, Like you want
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: to talk about maybe having a little bit of hope,
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: That's that's what I said.
- 1:01:27Speaker 3: Would kind of keep me around.
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: And so far we're doing. I don't know how good
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: they are. Like that's the part that I just do.
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: I'm not confident in. But you're yeah, I think that's
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: good point. It's it's gonna be hard for me to
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: just believe, I think right now until I don't know.
- 1:01:46Speaker 4: I don't know until what do you think Landyer is
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: coming here with like TV battleline or you think that
- 1:01:50Speaker 4: they just told him, Hey, you're gonna be the start
- 1:01:52Speaker 4: right away, like here's the keys the offense, Like I don't.
- 1:01:57Speaker 6: I think he saw t J. Keith and he's like,
- 1:02:00Speaker 6: I'm gonna be the starter here. I'm not worried.
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: I don't think you tell anybody you're you're starting here.
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: I think you can tell you. I think you tell
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: him you can be the you can be the you
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: can be the future for two years. And you can
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: tell him that and say you could you can be
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: You're you're not gonna You're not gonna give him a
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: starting job anybody. You shouldn't. You shouldn't ever do that.
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: You can you can tell me they could be if
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: they earn it.
- 1:02:26Speaker 6: But but I think he looked at the it's like, yeah, okay,
- 1:02:30Speaker 6: I'm competing as TGLE.
- 1:02:31Speaker 3: People know I mean, you know what's gonna happen.
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: I don't know. It just frustrating.
- 1:02:38Speaker 4: It's well, here's here's a big thing about Glandry is
- 1:02:42Speaker 4: And I watched him a lot at Virginia, but basically
- 1:02:44Speaker 4: I had money on him. Mestling reason why Anyway, he's
- 1:02:47Speaker 4: a he's a gun slinger. He's he's gonna have some
- 1:02:50Speaker 4: passes where pissy off. He's gonna throw a tight windows
- 1:02:52Speaker 4: and stuff. He's not afraid to make any throw out there,
- 1:02:55Speaker 4: which comes back to his confidence he has. He has confidence,
- 1:02:57Speaker 4: that's for sure. What what's then come back coaching staff
- 1:03:01Speaker 4: is he can run the ball? Are they going to
- 1:03:03Speaker 4: use it though? That's that's like like the with the
- 1:03:08Speaker 4: with Latif think he can run the ball, they never
- 1:03:11Speaker 4: used it at all.
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: And that, I mean that made sense. It made sense.
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: He can't run the ball. He's not good.
- 1:03:19Speaker 6: Yeah, like as like holy ship, people thought he's dual threat.
- 1:03:23Speaker 6: This guy's slow as hell.
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: So again this goes back to stupid. Why did we
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: think he was such a good dual threat? And all
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: that was because we got told he was a running
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: back by the coaching staff early in the year. He
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: did he's like a running back. He's not like a
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: damn running back. Why why do we say stuff like it?
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: You know, shame on us for believing that that stuff
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: from That's why I'm not I'm not believing anything Rule
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: says anymore. I just won't like it. Just stupid stuff.
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: We got d Lineman, We we got guys that are
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: Bowl rusher. It's gonna be about bullship.
- 1:03:55Speaker 4: Like the best thing, the best thing you've said about
- 1:03:57Speaker 4: Rule is he's a car salesman and he has told
- 1:03:59Speaker 4: us up and down the last few years about this,
- 1:04:01Speaker 4: this this bullshit.
- 1:04:03Speaker 3: Use used car show to be specific on that.
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: He just is like, he's like, the uh, you take
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: a car that's worth nothing and for trying to sell
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: it for five thousand dollars really good at that?
- 1:04:13Speaker 4: You were buying it last year, So you're not gonna
- 1:04:15Speaker 4: be buying this off season at all.
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: I've told you that. No, and I I bought him
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: to day heat.
- 1:04:22Speaker 6: Yeah there is a no hunter.
- 1:04:25Speaker 3: No we I It's not just yeah we all everybody
- 1:04:28Speaker 3: did that.
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: I know, I know very pessimistic fans that bought into
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: what was going on this.
- 1:04:32Speaker 6: I know you had a moment last year where were
- 1:04:35Speaker 6: like eleven wins. I feel like ten wins is the floor.
- 1:04:38Speaker 6: There was a moment where I remember being like, holy shit,
- 1:04:42Speaker 6: Hunter is who is this man?
- 1:04:45Speaker 3: I will promise you, I never said ten wins is
- 1:04:48Speaker 3: a floor.
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: You did no go find it, go find it. I
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: promised you.
- 1:04:53Speaker 3: I never said that.
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: I go find it, go find it, and me wrong,
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: like I promise you, I never said ten wins. I
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: was hyped out. Everybody was hyped up.
- 1:05:06Speaker 4: Yes, but yeah, it's there's just no momentum coming in
- 1:05:12Speaker 4: this offseason. And he talked to like all these like
- 1:05:16Speaker 4: i'd say, low key Husker fans. All of them were
- 1:05:18Speaker 4: just like, yeah, I don't even care about football team anymore,
- 1:05:20Speaker 4: which is which comes back to rule, like, there's just
- 1:05:23Speaker 4: no hype towards him at all, and he's he's got
- 1:05:26Speaker 4: to figure it out now, which he hasn't proven at
- 1:05:28Speaker 4: all he can.
- 1:05:29Speaker 6: Right, he's lost, he's lost the benefit of the doubt.
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: Here's where the moment got good for the and I
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: you know, you hope as a fan that it's not
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: the peak, but the peak was. And this is probably
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: the time that you guys were saying that. I was
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: like thinking, I know, going into the year, I did not,
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: I said seven wins, like, yeah, I think it was
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: after we were what was it or no.
- 1:05:57Speaker 3: Michigan game.
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: I don't know, somewhere in there where things were really
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: really good, where I thrible. I was, yeah, yeah, and
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: and and so you started looking at the schedule and
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: started looking down the road U c l A was
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: a disaster. That was when everyone's like, okay, and this
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: goes back to the missed opportunity. It wasn't so much
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: getting hyped up and excited about the the thing that
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: we were at, the program we had. It was the
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: opportunity ahead of us with where things were going that
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: you're like, okay, like we can get to ten wins.
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: And that's why the takeaway from the season is what
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: a missed opportunity and why now everybody's brains go, we
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: don't care anymore and this is not going well, and
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: why I'm on the point of get rid of rule
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: like it just it? What what what you want to
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: talk about? Hope and selling? What the hell are you
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: selling anymore? What are you doing?
- 1:06:48Speaker 4: Here's the here's here's the point where she hit the
- 1:06:51Speaker 4: fan going back on the season is the Minnesota game.
- 1:06:54Speaker 4: They're finally coming to the game and this difference between
- 1:06:56Speaker 4: the basketball team football team. To sett them down and
- 1:06:59Speaker 4: get the hype. Lets hype get to him. The hype
- 1:07:01Speaker 4: got to him that game and they got their ass kicked.
- 1:07:02Speaker 4: The basketball team comes out against has the big game
- 1:07:05Speaker 4: Friday against Ship, comes back, beats to Ohio State, calms down,
- 1:07:08Speaker 4: they just approved that. It was coach Daft who was
- 1:07:11Speaker 4: all hyped up, like, yeah, we're top twenty five in Nations.
- 1:07:13Speaker 3: It is and you're right, it is, Dad, and that's
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: a problem.
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: And it did. That's that's the excitement and the hype
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: that everybody so got sucked into because that's what it
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: was like, And yeah, it does.
- 1:07:25Speaker 3: We all, we all got excited.
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: That's part of being a fan.
- 1:07:27Speaker 6: Oh yeah for sure.
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: Like I said, I know some very pessimistic fans that
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: are fooled again this year by getting sucked into it
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: like that, like you did. I don't.
- 1:07:39Speaker 3: I just there's nothing the bad.
- 1:07:42Speaker 6: Burd is not a bad part. But so we have
- 1:07:45Speaker 6: got Matt Rule under contract until twenty thirty two. If
- 1:07:50Speaker 6: we fire Matt Rule, he's not going anywhere Like this
- 1:07:54Speaker 6: was it. I know, Like we're like we're like on
- 1:07:57Speaker 6: the hook for that there's no like James Franklin like, oh, hey,
- 1:08:00Speaker 6: we're gonna have to pay you out.
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: Yeah. I think I think too in this conspiracy. But
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: I think Matt Rold that wouldn't care if he gets
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: fired right now and in a time, in a time
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: that next year he's looking at our schedule, he's going
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: out ship. It's going to be hard as hell to
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: to get to eight wins and quote unquote improve. I
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: think it's a little bit why he's wearing the backwards
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: at he stayed. They stayed in Vegas for two days
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: after when the portals opening, and there's a lot of
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: work to being done, and they stayed in Vegas to
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: I don't know, have fun.
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: Like Calandria, that's what they were doing.
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: Yeah, I guess, so that good point. I just think
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: he I think he's like, you know what, I get
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: fired now, who gives a crap? Like because he knows
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: next year is going to be very hard, and he's
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: probably like you're right, Austin. He's like, I'm probably not
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: working after this again.
- 1:09:00Speaker 6: And like.
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: If I am, it's as a coordinator or a consultant's
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: role where I can not have I'm not a head coach.
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: Like he isn't he hasn't cared right now. There's another
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: negative reason of like they're saying, fire me, do it?
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: Dare you right now when it's a little bit more
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: controversial and you got to pay me more money? He's like,
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: I don't give a ship again. It's like maybe a
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: stretch thought, but at the same time, I don't think
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: he and then and then and the basketball team is
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: doing what they're doing and it makes them look even stupider.
- 1:09:30Speaker 6: Is there any part of you that makes the basketball
- 1:09:34Speaker 6: I know I know there isn't, but friends of my bird,
- 1:09:38Speaker 6: it took till you're.
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: Just a big question. Yeah no, and.
- 1:09:45Speaker 6: There's no lesson of gleam that time.
- 1:09:47Speaker 3: I hope and I people are gonna say that too.
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: No, I'm not.
- 1:09:51Speaker 6: I just need to ask.
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: I think this is Nope. I think this is a nominal.
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: I just think that the hoy work things. It's one
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: of those things why he's given this much time because
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: there's very little expectations from the players too, so everything
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: that you try, it's kind of a it was just nice.
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: It's a it's a it's a win win situation, right,
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: you do something doesn't work. People Fred's a pretty well
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: known coach. It just happens that he's a Nebraska guy.
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: Fred is that is a little bit of that tie
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: to it. It just happens that Fred is a very
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: even keeled dude too that kept things whatever. I know,
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: I I think you can. People are gonna say that
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: you need to get some one time. Okay, so what
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: are we gonna do. We're gonna stay here and hope
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: that Matt Reule can get done in your seven or
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: eight and sit here and it'suck on our thumbs and
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: and just hope that that happens, and that he's a
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: guy that what what reason? I get it. We didn't
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: have anything with with with Hoiberg either, But I it's
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: an I.
- 1:10:47Speaker 6: Mean, in year four you saw real progress with Berg.
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: Yeah you're four, and where we're at now, I guess
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: you see progress in Matt rule here.
- 1:10:57Speaker 4: But if words progress what what?
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: What?
- 1:11:01Speaker 6: What?
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 1:11:02Speaker 6: What?
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: What?
- 1:11:02Speaker 6: What?
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: Points to that? I just think it's they're very two,
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: very different programs Nebraska. I do think what's happened with
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: Fred is just an anomaly in sports in general with
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: how what what's happened? And it's a good anomaly. But no,
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: I don't Yes, Fred was given time to learn from
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: his mistakes, but it wasn't like his The things that
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: were happening were like they were. We just it was horrible.
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: I mean for both team is too, but it was
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: complete overhauls and that's what Fred's done. Matt Rule's not
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: doing a complete overhaul, or if he thinks he is,
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: he just is like, I don't know.
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: Very different.
- 1:11:44Speaker 4: Yeah, difference between Fred and Matt Rule is with these
- 1:11:46Speaker 4: giving him time is you could at least see kind
- 1:11:48Speaker 4: of what the vision Fred wanted a little bit and
- 1:11:52Speaker 4: sounds on his bullshit that I think fans are trying
- 1:11:56Speaker 4: to get tired of. Like he he was telling them
- 1:11:57Speaker 4: straight up like we are terrible and and he was
- 1:12:01Speaker 4: like he wasn't selling these players aren't as good as
- 1:12:04Speaker 4: like they're better when they are.
- 1:12:06Speaker 3: I mean, I wasn't very high on I said it
- 1:12:08Speaker 3: coming into this year.
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: I'm like Fred, Fred doesn't make a tournament game that
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: you fire like, yeah, I obviously here, I'm not firing
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: Fred now. But it was one of those things that
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: it's just working. Things are working in it, and that's
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: props the last two three years of everything in the building.
- 1:12:27Speaker 3: And again can't can't echo that enough because it was.
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: It was one of those things where from the opposite
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: reason people were down and I was, this is ridiculous
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: for paying Fred Hoibert this much money for what we're doing,
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: and that was stupid. You know what is proven us wrong?
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: So I guess, yeah, there's a world where Matt Rurle
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: can go prove us wrong and go do it. That's
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: definitely able to be done. But I don't. I just
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: don't see it.
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: Big question is it doesn't care enough. I don't. That's
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: he hasn't proven that yet.
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: I think he might care enough.
- 1:12:58Speaker 6: I won't say he doesn't care.
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: I think he cares enough. I just don't. I don't
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: think he knows.
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: It was that backwards having on me. But I don't
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: know why. I'm getting old.
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: Yeah my last point, yes, maybe yeah, but I think
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: I think he's carried this whole time. Att rule has
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: been he's very pat I just don't think he's very
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: good at some things.
- 1:13:18Speaker 3: So okay, a little longering today, I think it's okay.
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: Any other.
- 1:13:24Speaker 3: Takeaway that you mentioned the Lady Huskers that women still too.
- 1:13:28Speaker 6: They dropped two in a row, unfortunately, and then they
- 1:13:31Speaker 6: think they won and again the other night. So, but
- 1:13:33Speaker 6: we lost two ranked teams, and we lost the USC close,
- 1:13:36Speaker 6: and we lost Iowa relatively, so they're still looking good.
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: Yep. Can I keep going once a week here?
- 1:13:44Speaker 4: Who would have thought that the talk about wants to
- 1:13:48Speaker 4: transfer portal Criman in January?
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: Well, I would have thought that, because that's what we've
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: done every year.
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: But more of the talk around than around the state.
- 1:14:00Speaker 6: Yeah, it's true, nationally stated, the portal has been whatever
- 1:14:04Speaker 6: it's it is.
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: It's It's kind of funny because all the media outlets
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: have all their like portal trackers and are trying to
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: like keep talking about that. I'm like, I don't really care.
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: I don't want to hear about this. We have something
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: else going right now. It's a lot more fun.
- 1:14:17Speaker 6: Like you don't even have a defensive line coach.
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: No, we don't yet, and therefore were therefore we have
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: not gotten one defensive lineman in the portal yet some linebackers,
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: but all right back next week, God, jem, we are
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: go'll be Grid insist,
