- 0:00SPEAKER_01: I'm Jackie.
- 0:01SPEAKER_01: I'm Kid.
- 0:03SPEAKER_01: And this is WTF.
- 0:05SPEAKER_02: Grab your coffee, wine, water bottle, emotional support snack, no judgment, and let's get into it.
- 0:12SPEAKER_04: Today we're all gonna do a subscription audit.
- 0:18SPEAKER_04: I might not do it today, but I need to do it this week.
- 0:20SPEAKER_04: We need to do it.
- 0:20SPEAKER_04: This is the call to all of us.
- 0:22SPEAKER_04: This is the reminder.
- 0:23SPEAKER_04: This is your friendly WTF Women Talk Finance reminder.
- 0:27SPEAKER_04: This week in the club, we are doing an audit of our subscriptions, okay?
- 0:35SPEAKER_04: How many apps do you have on your phone right now that need to be re-downloaded?
- 0:40SPEAKER_01: Meaning you've had the app on your phone, but you're not even using it.
- 0:44SPEAKER_04: And so it went, it went to the cloud and real.
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 0:48SPEAKER_01: How many subscriptions?
- 0:49SPEAKER_04: How many things did you sign up for that you're not using, that you're not even aware of, that you forgot about?
- 0:56SPEAKER_04: Also, Amazon, and I love Amazon, but there is a tiny little trick going on where it's like buy it now, and then you gotta select a button.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: You can do a one-time purchase or the price that they're marketing it at, the reduced price, that only happens if you sign up for a subscription.
- 1:14SPEAKER_04: And so if you want that special price, you probably even realize they're gonna send it to you monthly.
- 1:19SPEAKER_04: My friend Alicia has a great rule.
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: She realized, she's like, I stopped being excited for things.
- 1:26SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:27SPEAKER_01: They were just showing up.
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: And sometimes I'd open something, be like, oh, she's like, Oh, I didn't.
- 1:31SPEAKER_04: And I ordered that.
- 1:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:32SPEAKER_04: How often do you get a package?
- 1:33SPEAKER_04: I got I had that coming.
- 1:34SPEAKER_04: I know I have trash bags arriving today, as hopefully as you think those are coming.
- 1:38SPEAKER_04: You said hopefully.
- 1:39SPEAKER_01: If you're not expecting it, anticipating it, if you're not looking forward to it, if things are just arriving and you're like, oh, I forgot I am looking forward to it because we have no trash bags.
- 1:50SPEAKER_04: How could you invite me into your home?
- 1:52SPEAKER_04: I know with no way to get rid of garbage.
- 1:56SPEAKER_04: All the garbage you bring.
- 1:57SPEAKER_04: Refuse?
- 1:58SPEAKER_04: Refuse.
- 2:00SPEAKER_03: Debris.
- 2:06SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, I do that too.
- 2:08SPEAKER_04: So last night I was looking for something.
- 2:12SPEAKER_04: And we used to live real tiny.
- 2:15SPEAKER_04: We lived in a fifth wheel.
- 2:16SPEAKER_04: We sold all our all our belongings.
- 2:17SPEAKER_04: This wasn't that long ago.
- 2:19SPEAKER_04: This was you obviously were subscribed to a trucker app.
- 2:22SPEAKER_04: I was subscribed to a trucker app, but you needed that.
- 2:25SPEAKER_04: But I didn't have a lot of belongings and I didn't have any way to do Amazon.
- 2:29SPEAKER_04: I didn't have a way to order things.
- 2:32SPEAKER_04: My I didn't have things, you know, like I didn't have a lot of extra stuff.
- 2:38SPEAKER_04: We're goldfish.
- 2:40SPEAKER_04: I got nooks and crannies of all kinds of stuff.
- 2:43SPEAKER_04: You need it, I got it, baby.
- 2:44SPEAKER_04: You need me to bedazzle something.
- 2:46SPEAKER_04: I can do that.
- 2:47SPEAKER_04: Which kind of bedazzles do you want?
- 2:49SPEAKER_04: Do you want me to hot fix it?
- 2:50SPEAKER_04: Do you want me to bedazzle it?
- 2:51SPEAKER_04: Do you want me to pearl it?
- 2:52SPEAKER_04: Because I got it all, baby.
- 2:54SPEAKER_04: I will do any one.
- 2:55SPEAKER_04: I have some ideas for my collar.
- 2:57SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I think we should.
- 2:57SPEAKER_04: And for my sleeves.
- 2:59SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we should.
- 3:00SPEAKER_04: But like, how ridiculous is it?
- 3:01SPEAKER_04: Like I used it for a project.
- 3:04SPEAKER_04: So I each one of those things, and I ordered all of them, and now I have them all.
- 3:08SPEAKER_04: And they're in a drawer, you know, downstairs.
- 3:11SPEAKER_04: And then I went and looked for something else last night, and sure enough, like I have just so many things.
- 3:19SPEAKER_04: This is also the difference between inventory and subscriptions.
- 3:23SPEAKER_04: But we both keep inventory.
- 3:25SPEAKER_04: I feel like because I pay for my Amazon account, I do sometimes feel like I need to use an money's worth.
- 3:36SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 3:36SPEAKER_04: If I've if I paid for it, why wouldn't I?
- 3:39SPEAKER_04: I did make I I did have to decide, and I forced myself a little bit to just decide between like Amazon versus Walmart.
- 3:47SPEAKER_04: You know, which one do I want?
- 3:48SPEAKER_04: Pick one.
- 3:49SPEAKER_04: Pick one.
- 3:49SPEAKER_04: Pick your team.
- 3:53SPEAKER_04: That one you've given some rational adult thought, and that makes sense.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: The some of the subscriptions that are getting us are the ones that are$9.99 a month,$12.99 a month.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: Say you've got three meditation apps, two streaming services you forget about.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: Totally.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: If you've got five streaming services and you really only use three, what are you doing with those other two?
- 4:12SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 4:12SPEAKER_04: And then like a gym membership to a gym in a city you might have moved away from.
- 4:16SPEAKER_04: Or a gym membership where or an app maybe all summer you ran.
- 4:20SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 4:20SPEAKER_04: Did you need the gym membership for those months?
- 4:23SPEAKER_04: We're gonna hold or cancel it.
- 4:24SPEAKER_04: And we're not telling anybody to go to the gym.
- 4:26SPEAKER_04: Gym stuff, I do that a lot.
- 4:28SPEAKER_04: Like I'm like, oh yeah, I'll join this person's program for a little bit.
- 4:32SPEAKER_04: That would be great.
- 4:33SPEAKER_04: I'll do that.
- 4:34SPEAKER_04: Yep.
- 4:35SPEAKER_04: Um we so in preparation for this, I did look at my stuff.
- 4:41SPEAKER_04: Last night I did put my we have a Starlink because we do have an RV that we do take out for extended periods of time.
- 4:49SPEAKER_04: So we have a Starlink.
- 4:50SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 4:51SPEAKER_04: Um we're pretty much done for the season.
- 4:54SPEAKER_04: So I put my Starlink on pause because you can dial down your subscription.
- 5:00SPEAKER_04: That's like$200 a month.
- 5:01SPEAKER_04: Wow.
- 5:02SPEAKER_04: So dialed that down.
- 5:03SPEAKER_04: Yep.
- 5:04SPEAKER_04: Um, I talked in another episode in one of our audits.
- 5:09SPEAKER_04: Um and my spouse and I, we run through our expenses once about once a week, once every two weeks.
- 5:17SPEAKER_04: So good.
- 5:18SPEAKER_04: We sit down and we go through and we talk through it.
- 5:20SPEAKER_04: There's a Google expense, neither of us really understands what the heck it's for, but we're scared to turn it off.
- 5:27SPEAKER_04: And it's$9.99.
- 5:29SPEAKER_04: So the funniest thing is like the$9.99, I literally have no idea.
- 5:32SPEAKER_04: We're trying to figure it out, but we're both like we don't want to turn it off and lose maybe like picture storage or something that we were holding on to, but I don't know what this is for.
- 5:43SPEAKER_04: Yep.
- 5:44SPEAKER_04: Um, I told you how our insurance, so not really a subscription, but it did make us realize if there's a month there was an expense that went up pretty significantly.
- 5:53SPEAKER_04: Um, if you can't see my uh my dog is back over here participating.
- 5:59SPEAKER_04: Um just here for love.
- 6:01SPEAKER_04: Just here for the love.
- 6:02SPEAKER_04: Um, so there's things like that that it took us a time to go through.
- 6:11SPEAKER_04: And so we were able to dial down quite a few expenses just doing this audit.
- 6:16SPEAKER_04: So I did a bit of an audit on my stuff.
- 6:18SPEAKER_04: There were a few things that I chose to keep, but it reminded me, okay, I should be using this.
- 6:25SPEAKER_04: If I don't use it, I need to cancel it.
- 6:28SPEAKER_04: Um, and then there's other things that were such an easy, like, oh my God, I cannot believe I'm still paying for this.
- 6:35SPEAKER_04: I need to cancel this.
- 6:36SPEAKER_04: Why am I doing this?
- 6:38SPEAKER_04: A lot of things creep up on you, right?
- 6:40SPEAKER_04: There's this like free trials to hostage situation where you order one and get a seven-day free trial, and then you forget to cancel it, and you are automatically converted then.
- 6:49SPEAKER_04: And it's intentionally very hard to cancel those subscriptions.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: They make it really hard to like reach someone, yeah, how to get out of it.
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: But I think the first, the first, I love that you did an audit.
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: That's the first step.
- 7:01SPEAKER_01: Make a list.
- 7:02SPEAKER_01: I would be mortified if I went home later this week and I will and made a list of all of the things I'm paying out on a monthly basis that are just hitting the credit card that I'm not even not even paying attention to.
- 7:13SPEAKER_04: Not even using it.
- 7:14SPEAKER_04: There's things you don't know what they are.
- 7:17SPEAKER_04: That's what's so crazy to me is there were things I didn't know what they were.
- 7:21SPEAKER_04: And I'm assuming it will be like with the Google example, it's probably like a storage or a data allowance.
- 7:30unknown: Yeah.
- 7:30SPEAKER_04: Where you're and I don't even know if I'm using it.
- 7:32SPEAKER_04: I use my Gmail, I use photos.
- 7:34SPEAKER_04: I'm not sure if I'm accessing this, but it seems like it could be dangerous to get rid of it.
- 7:38SPEAKER_04: And I'm like, oh my God, am I gonna lose my pictures if I don't pay for this?
- 7:42SPEAKER_04: Um I pay for uh there's little things that I notice.
- 7:50SPEAKER_04: So I love Audible, I pay for Audible, but there's definitely months because I do use the library system a lot where I'll have several credits stacked up on Audible.
- 8:00SPEAKER_04: I'm not sure how Audible works.
- 8:02SPEAKER_04: How do you what do you mean credits stacked up?
- 8:04SPEAKER_04: So you pay$13.99,$12.99,$14, I don't know, I don't remember how much a month and you get a credit to get a book, right?
- 8:13SPEAKER_04: An Audible book.
- 8:14SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 8:15SPEAKER_04: And there's times I've logged in and I'll have four or five credits, which means I went four or five months without getting an Audible.
- 8:22SPEAKER_04: Because I do use my library system pretty significantly.
- 8:26SPEAKER_04: So is so if my library system is serving me and I'm not feeling without with the Audible, do I need to be paying the Audible subscription?
- 8:39SPEAKER_04: I don't have to subscribe.
- 8:41SPEAKER_04: I could just buy the books on their own.
- 8:43SPEAKER_04: Do I need to subscribe to Audible?
- 8:45SPEAKER_04: The other thing with Audible that I really am careful about is some of the books are cheaper than the credits.
- 8:52SPEAKER_04: There's books sometimes on there for$4.99.
- 8:55SPEAKER_04: Why would I use a credit that cost me$13?
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: Well, and if you stop your subscription, what type of access do you have to do?
- 9:00SPEAKER_04: Yeah, do the books then go up?
- 9:02SPEAKER_04: Do I lose my library?
- 9:03SPEAKER_04: There's a lot of questions there.
- 9:04SPEAKER_04: So I've just kept it going instead of taking the time to read through it.
- 9:08SPEAKER_04: If I can keep the books that I've purchased, I should cancel it.
- 9:12SPEAKER_04: Because if I can go four or five months without needing to use it because I'm using the library and I'm not feeling like I'm sacrificing anything, why would I still be paying the subscription?
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: Maybe that's just a good baseline.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: Like you can people can judge their own amount of time.
- 9:29SPEAKER_01: Totally makes sense.
- 9:30SPEAKER_01: Is it for me, is it 60 days?
- 9:31SPEAKER_01: Is it 90 days?
- 9:32SPEAKER_01: Is it 30?
- 9:33SPEAKER_01: Is it a week?
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: Whatever.
- 9:34SPEAKER_04: And I know lots of people who would never want to do that.
- 9:36SPEAKER_04: They're like, nope, I'm gonna stick with the audible because I don't want to wait for the library.
- 9:40SPEAKER_04: I don't want to be on the list.
- 9:41SPEAKER_04: I don't find the system as easy to use.
- 9:43SPEAKER_04: And that's fine.
- 9:44SPEAKER_04: It's not my rules versus your rules.
- 9:46SPEAKER_02: It's just personal rules, what works.
- 9:49SPEAKER_04: And more so just awareness.
- 9:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:51SPEAKER_01: Just be aware of how much is going out every month.
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: So these small charges can feel invisible, but they add up to an average of$219 a month, which is$2628,$2,620 a year in most in subscriptions that most Americans forget they have.
- 10:09SPEAKER_01: Forget.
- 10:10SPEAKER_04: So that means they're not using it.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: And you forget you've been having it.
- 10:12SPEAKER_04: That's not your Netflix, right?
- 10:14SPEAKER_04: That you're watching this is stuff you didn't know you were the Googles that you don't know what it's going to.
- 10:20SPEAKER_04: Yep.
- 10:21SPEAKER_04: And you've chosen to keep that because the danger of getting rid of it.
- 10:26SPEAKER_04: I don't know what it is.
- 10:27SPEAKER_04: I need to research.
- 10:28SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 10:28SPEAKER_04: I so like I literally have homework.
- 10:30SPEAKER_04: My homework right now is to research the Google account, see what it's paying for, and decide on Audible whether or not I need to keep it or not.
- 10:39SPEAKER_01: Just for fun, I'm gonna do a list of my known subscriptions and then I'm gonna compare them.
- 10:45SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna do the audit and bank them against the unknown.
- 10:49SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 10:50SPEAKER_04: I think that's a good idea because there's some that really surprised me.
- 10:53SPEAKER_04: There were some we did research.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: You can have a board, investors, advisors, and still have nobody you can actually talk to about what is really going on.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: That is not unusual.
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: That is the founder reality.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: And we step in right there.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: I'm Tom Powell.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: And at the founder's office, we're proud to sponsor Women Talk Finance.
- 11:13SPEAKER_04: There were some that and we do a lot of financial conversations within our household, and still there were some that slipped through the cracks, which is so crazy to me.
- 11:23SPEAKER_04: Yep.
- 11:24SPEAKER_04: Well, and also if you're a person that uses multi methodologies to bank and pay, like say you've got this credit card and this credit card, and then this bank account and this bank account, you've all of a sudden got four places you need to go look to see what's hitting those cars.
- 11:38SPEAKER_04: And business accounts and some of those businesses have subscriptions that we have to pay attention to as well.
- 11:44SPEAKER_04: Um, and so yeah, there was a it's a lot of work to decide which ones to keep.
- 11:50SPEAKER_04: I am not a proponent and I do know people, I know people who do this.
- 11:54SPEAKER_04: Like they've given up uh accounts that they did enjoy.
- 12:00SPEAKER_04: People and and if you need to do that for your financial situation, absolutely.
- 12:05SPEAKER_04: I'm not here to say you should or shouldn't.
- 12:08SPEAKER_04: But giving up a peacock when you're using it and you like the shows that are available, giving up Netflix, giving up Disney, if it's something you're using, if it's if it's something that you know you look forward to the end of the day sitting down and watching a show and just enjoying your time.
- 12:30SPEAKER_04: I know, I know you and I both do.
- 12:32SPEAKER_04: Um I'm not sitting here saying like, oh, don't give that up.
- 12:38SPEAKER_04: But I'm saying do think about if it is something you enjoy, isn't that what you're working so hard every day for?
- 12:45SPEAKER_04: Maybe you should consider keeping the things that that bring you joy.
- 12:50SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 12:51SPEAKER_04: Um if it doesn't uh if it but if it's not making financial sense to you, then obviously you need to make that decision for yourself.
- 13:00SPEAKER_04: But I do feel like in some ways the subscription language is being weaponized against us kind of like the avocado toast of a decade ago, where they're like, Is that a decade ago?
- 13:11SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 13:11SPEAKER_04: But they're like, give up your avocado toast and then you can buy a home.
- 13:14SPEAKER_04: And I'm like, I don't know that that's actually true.
- 13:17SPEAKER_04: A$9.99 subscription that you don't know about and don't use obviously isn't great.
- 13:25SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 13:26SPEAKER_04: But if it's a$9.99 subscription that you're using every day and you're getting joy out of, eat that damn avocado toast.
- 13:32SPEAKER_04: Like, enjoy it.
- 13:33SPEAKER_04: Why the heck not?
- 13:34SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's probably a fraction of your time in your overall working life paying for that subscription that brings you hours of joy.
- 13:46SPEAKER_04: I mean you might as well.
- 13:47SPEAKER_04: Keep what you use.
- 13:48SPEAKER_04: Keep what you use, keep what you can do.
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: I was just thinking about for going in my known column.
- 13:53SPEAKER_01: I recognize now that I've got three AI subscriptions.
- 13:58SPEAKER_04: Oh, right.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: Am I using all of them?
- 14:00SPEAKER_01: Are you using them?
- 14:00SPEAKER_01: No.
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: But I'm afraid to cancel them because of what I've done.
- 14:03SPEAKER_01: Because you lose different.
- 14:04SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you lose it.
- 14:05SPEAKER_04: But the psychology behind it is what's the reality?
- 14:08SPEAKER_04: Do I need to keep it?
- 14:09SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 14:09SPEAKER_04: What am I actually losing if I lose?
- 14:12SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 14:12SPEAKER_04: No, you're totally right.
- 14:14SPEAKER_04: I mean, a lot of us built a lot in Chat GPT and then switched to Claude, and we don't want to lose what we had in Chat GPT.
- 14:20SPEAKER_04: Yep.
- 14:21SPEAKER_04: Is there there are ways I did research that because I was thinking the same way.
- 14:25SPEAKER_04: Can I transfer my knowledge from chat to Claude?
- 14:28SPEAKER_04: And you can.
- 14:29SPEAKER_04: And so does that make more sense for me to do?
- 14:32SPEAKER_04: Yep.
- 14:33SPEAKER_04: Do I need um in one of our audits, I realized I was still paying for AE Crime Central or whatever their yeah, that's a subscription.
- 14:43SPEAKER_04: It is a subscription.
- 14:44SPEAKER_04: It was pretty good.
- 14:45SPEAKER_04: We did use it because we watched a few documentaries, but then I stopped using it.
- 14:49SPEAKER_04: And it's like canceled it.
- 14:50SPEAKER_04: Just cancel it.
- 14:51SPEAKER_04: I don't need to spend you can always reactivate a lot of these things.
- 14:54SPEAKER_04: It was$6.99 a month.
- 14:56SPEAKER_04: Wasn't a big deal, but I didn't know it.
- 14:58SPEAKER_04: The whole principle is just being aware and conscious.
- 15:01SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 15:01SPEAKER_04: And making making decisions rather than like letting the auto-recurring charge decide for you.
- 15:08SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that's it.
- 15:09SPEAKER_04: Um, there's there's homework because there's always homework house.
- 15:13SPEAKER_04: I guess we're now on uh we're a homework show.
- 15:15SPEAKER_04: Oh, we are.
- 15:16SPEAKER_04: Look forward to your homework assignment.
- 15:18SPEAKER_04: Yeah, send it in.
- 15:20SPEAKER_04: We'll grade it.
- 15:21SPEAKER_04: I think we're like happy face graders.
- 15:24SPEAKER_04: I would give an A five stars, 10 out of 10, 100 out of 100.
- 15:28SPEAKER_04: I definitely would be the teacher with smiley face stickers.
- 15:31SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 15:32SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 15:33SPEAKER_04: Red pen just to draw you hearts.
- 15:35SPEAKER_04: You got a four out of ten, but good try, baby.
- 15:37SPEAKER_04: Good try.
- 15:39SPEAKER_04: We'd be wonderful homework graders.
- 15:41SPEAKER_04: So good.
- 15:41SPEAKER_04: Okay, so the homework assignment is open your bank statement.
- 15:44SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna extend that to bank statements, credit card statements, online pay apps.
- 15:52SPEAKER_04: I guess you're probably not using Venmo or anything like that to do recurring charge.
- 15:57SPEAKER_04: Not recurring, no.
- 15:58SPEAKER_04: But highlight every recurring charge, cancel three.
- 16:03SPEAKER_04: I guess three is a unique challenge.
- 16:05SPEAKER_04: Maybe you only have five.
- 16:06SPEAKER_04: Or decide how many you want to cancel.
- 16:08SPEAKER_04: Sure, cancel.
- 16:09SPEAKER_04: Or decide on a number maybe you want to say.
- 16:11SPEAKER_04: Or come back and be like, girls, I did the audit and I'm tight.
- 16:15SPEAKER_04: Like, yeah, I don't have anything I need to cancel.
- 16:18SPEAKER_04: I'm on it.
- 16:18SPEAKER_04: Nothing here, baby.
- 16:20SPEAKER_04: I run a tight ship.
- 16:21SPEAKER_04: Yeah, welcome.
- 16:23SPEAKER_04: Wouldn't that be fun?
- 16:24SPEAKER_04: It might be a fun game to see.
- 16:26SPEAKER_04: If you're that person, I'm pretty sure my friend Alicia's the one I talked about that.
- 16:29SPEAKER_04: She, I'm pretty sure she can't also I like your known versus unknown.
- 16:34SPEAKER_04: I love this idea of maybe before you do this, writing a list of how many you know you have.
- 16:40SPEAKER_04: And then when you do it, you don't even need to write them down, but tally up how many were unknown and what that dollar amount is.
- 16:47SPEAKER_04: Let's see if anybody's close to that 219 a month.
- 16:50SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 16:51SPEAKER_04: Do you think you're over under on the 219?
- 16:54SPEAKER_04: You think you're over?
- 16:55SPEAKER_04: I was pretty I was pretty high.
- 16:58SPEAKER_04: I will admit I am a marketer's dream.
- 17:01SPEAKER_04: Oh, for sure.
- 17:02SPEAKER_01: I am on the socials.
- 17:05SPEAKER_04: I uh you're on the internet.
- 17:07SPEAKER_01: Scroll.
- 17:08SPEAKER_04: I am just, I don't want to say I'm a doom scroller, but I am easily persuaded that I need what you're selling.
- 17:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I will try it if especially if it's in like an anti-aging quality of your, you name it, sleep, skin, digestion, whatever.
- 17:28SPEAKER_01: I'm down to try.
- 17:30SPEAKER_04: Influencers can get me.
- 17:31SPEAKER_01: They all get me.
- 17:32SPEAKER_04: They get me.
- 17:33SPEAKER_04: They know my number.
- 17:34SPEAKER_01: I have said yes.
- 17:36SPEAKER_04: I have been a willing patron um for a lot of things.
- 17:42SPEAKER_04: My Instagram feed is mostly like skincare, animal voiceovers, and lumberjacks.
- 17:53SPEAKER_04: Like good combo.
- 17:55SPEAKER_04: They're like, this is this woman is Target.
- 18:01SPEAKER_04: They know us, baby.
- 18:03SPEAKER_04: They know I feel known and seen.
- 18:05SPEAKER_04: I'm so seen on, they know exactly who I am.
- 18:08SPEAKER_04: Also, if you are, if you're how do I say this?
- 18:15SPEAKER_04: I gifted a lot of Korean collagen methods.
- 18:20SPEAKER_04: You might have gotten one.
- 18:21SPEAKER_04: I have so many.
- 18:22SPEAKER_04: You might have gotten one from me, you might have gotten one from me, you might have gotten one from me because I wanted to try this product.
- 18:28SPEAKER_04: I thought I was buying one, and then you know, I got 16 in the mail.
- 18:32SPEAKER_04: And so, lovely little skin mask, but this much will last me a year.
- 18:38SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 18:38SPEAKER_04: And so I did a lot of gifting.
- 18:40SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 18:41SPEAKER_04: You've given me a lot of skincare stuff.
- 18:43SPEAKER_04: Have I given you that mask in duplicate?
- 18:45SPEAKER_04: That's one.
- 18:46SPEAKER_04: Well, I've got one for you.
- 18:48SPEAKER_04: You've given me a lot of skincare.
- 18:50SPEAKER_04: Remember when you burned your face off?
- 18:52SPEAKER_04: Sure do.
- 18:54SPEAKER_04: I was triaging you from afar.
- 18:56SPEAKER_04: You did triage me so good.
- 18:58SPEAKER_04: That was scary.
- 18:58SPEAKER_04: That was so scary.
- 19:00SPEAKER_04: That was okay.
- 19:02SPEAKER_04: Um, I like this closing though.
- 19:06SPEAKER_04: We're not broke, we're subscribed.
- 19:09SPEAKER_04: Some of us might be some of us might be broke.
- 19:11SPEAKER_04: But like, are we just oversubscribed?
- 19:13SPEAKER_04: Are we feeling tight because we're not seeing the value of our money?
- 19:16SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 19:17SPEAKER_04: And it's disappearing out of our accounts before we've even determined.
- 19:20SPEAKER_04: If you were to spend cash on it, like if you had cash in your hand, if every month what you what you were spending was cash in your hand, would you pay the cash for that today?
- 19:34SPEAKER_04: Would you pay a hundred dollars for the Disney Hulu packet with cash, with cash, with cash?
- 19:42SPEAKER_04: Yes, yes, yes.
- 19:44SPEAKER_04: Would you like pay the cash for that today?
- 19:46SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 19:47SPEAKER_04: So, like, if you wouldn't, then you probably can get rid of it if you're not finding the value in it.
- 19:54SPEAKER_04: It's not about getting rid of the things that you enjoy, it's about getting rid of the things that you're not finding value in.
- 19:59SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I've got one on my list.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: I got a ways to go though, because my known column, I know if I sat and thought about it when I wasn't distracted, I would have a lot more.
- 20:07SPEAKER_01: And then the unknown is gonna be horrific.
- 20:09SPEAKER_04: And are you feeling like you should have it?
- 20:11SPEAKER_04: Like, is there a guilt subscription?
- 20:13SPEAKER_04: So, do you have subscriptions?
- 20:16SPEAKER_04: Like, do you have a language app?
- 20:19SPEAKER_04: Do you have a workout platform?
- 20:21SPEAKER_04: Do you have, you know, the financial newsletter or platform that you're paying for because you feel like you should have it?
- 20:30SPEAKER_04: Because if you see it making influencers' lives better, and you are just hoping that by throwing out the money somehow magically through Osmosis, your life is better because you paid the$9.99 or the$16.99 or the$99.99 for that app and you're hoping to get the benefits from it, even though you're not using it.
- 20:50SPEAKER_04: Yep.
- 20:50SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 20:51SPEAKER_04: I have those.
- 20:52SPEAKER_04: I do.
- 20:53SPEAKER_04: And also there's different variations or versions of these apps, right?
- 20:58SPEAKER_04: Like you can start in the free version and then maybe like the New York Times.
- 21:02SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah.
- 21:03SPEAKER_04: You get some names.
- 21:04SPEAKER_04: You do.
- 21:05SPEAKER_04: But if you pay, you get more.
- 21:08SPEAKER_04: So maybe an assessment of is the free version gonna get you by or do you need the paid version?
- 21:13SPEAKER_04: Do you need the paid version?
- 21:14SPEAKER_04: I think I have can you get away with the free version?
- 21:18SPEAKER_04: I think I've got the no.
- 21:19SPEAKER_04: But if it's impacting your life, if it is, if it's like, no, I I want the paid version, then choose it.
- 21:25SPEAKER_04: Sometimes I like being credit secure in Audible.
- 21:30SPEAKER_04: I like knowing that I have a bank of credits in my Audible account.
- 21:36SPEAKER_04: Bank of bank.
- 21:37SPEAKER_04: And my feels good.
- 21:39SPEAKER_04: Am I willing to give that up?
- 21:41SPEAKER_04: That's also a really interesting thing, too, because the psychology behind points and credits, what that does.
- 21:47SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 21:48SPEAKER_04: Sometimes we just do sometimes we just do it just to do it.
- 21:51SPEAKER_04: Because we love the points.
- 21:52SPEAKER_04: We love the points.
- 21:53SPEAKER_04: We love the points.
- 21:53SPEAKER_04: So that's and I guess that's all fine, but know that there is psychology and commercialism and marketing that's Playing at you and just make your decision conscious versus subconscious.
- 22:04SPEAKER_04: Make it a game too.
- 22:06SPEAKER_04: You're being gamified on the on the other side.
- 22:09SPEAKER_04: And so maybe make it a game with your gals.
- 22:13SPEAKER_04: Call up your friends.
- 22:14SPEAKER_04: Do you want to play the game later?
- 22:15SPEAKER_04: I want to play a game.
- 22:16SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 22:16SPEAKER_04: Let's see, see who can cancel the most.
- 22:20SPEAKER_04: See who can guess how many known subscriptions they have.
- 22:25SPEAKER_04: See who like make it a game.
- 22:27SPEAKER_04: Make it a game with your friends because then it makes it a conversation.
- 22:31SPEAKER_04: Um, it gets you to do it in a way that doesn't feel like a task, like homework.
- 22:38SPEAKER_04: Uh-huh.
- 22:38SPEAKER_04: Gamify it.
- 22:40SPEAKER_04: Or reward yourself.
- 22:42SPEAKER_04: I'm all for rewards.
- 22:43SPEAKER_04: I love rewards.
- 22:44SPEAKER_04: If you cancel$200 in subscriptions, yeah, go get yourself a little treaty treat.
- 22:54SPEAKER_04: Because you just saved yourself$200 a month.
- 22:56SPEAKER_04: Getting yourself a little treat today is fine.
- 22:58SPEAKER_04: I I'm just I'm motivated that way.
- 23:02SPEAKER_04: I'm motivated.
- 23:02SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna be overwhelmed by this.
- 23:04SPEAKER_04: Just looking at my phone.
- 23:05SPEAKER_04: Um, there are gonna be so many.
- 23:07SPEAKER_04: Did you look at your Apple subscriptions?
- 23:08SPEAKER_04: Open your Apple subscriptions too.
- 23:10SPEAKER_04: That's a good place to.
- 23:11SPEAKER_04: I needed to do that.
- 23:14SPEAKER_04: I have a few subscriptions.
- 23:16SPEAKER_04: I'm checking it right now.
- 23:18SPEAKER_04: So we've got our Nordic bike.
- 23:21SPEAKER_04: I I can use, yeah, you've got my iCloud.
- 23:28SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 23:29SPEAKER_04: Didn't realize they were getting me for that every month.
- 23:33SPEAKER_04: But I on my bike and my rower machine, there's free that's it, bikes and rowing on my on both machines.
- 23:42SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 23:43SPEAKER_04: I am not using them to the level, and I'm certainly not training to the level that combined I was paying$100 a month for those subscriptions.
- 23:53SPEAKER_04: This goes back to where can you use the free and use the free well and good.
- 23:56SPEAKER_04: There were free ones on there that I was like, I tried both free versions and I was like, these are fine.
- 24:01SPEAKER_04: Why would I be?
- 24:02SPEAKER_04: It really wasn't a big deal.
- 24:04SPEAKER_04: I could adjust everything I still needed to adjust.
- 24:07SPEAKER_04: It didn't impact my ride at all.
- 24:10SPEAKER_04: I was like, okay, why would I bother?
- 24:13SPEAKER_04: There's like a dozen free classes on my bike that I didn't even know existed because they're they're shoving them way at the bottom.
- 24:21SPEAKER_04: Yep, because they're the free ones, not the money makers.
- 24:23SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 24:24SPEAKER_04: And so that was a pretty easy game if I am just a tiny little 38-year-old baby.
- 24:32SPEAKER_04: Just trying to mooch my parents' subscription account.
- 24:37SPEAKER_04: And these billionaires are trying to stop me.
- 24:40SPEAKER_04: And I just think it's really rude.
- 24:41SPEAKER_04: It's rude.
- 24:42SPEAKER_04: It's really rude.
- 24:42SPEAKER_04: And it's disrupting the family unit.
- 24:44SPEAKER_04: It's just it's very destructive.
- 24:46SPEAKER_04: Um, I I do some the some of these things do have family sharing.
- 24:52SPEAKER_04: And so we've done those as a family.
- 24:54SPEAKER_04: Good.
- 24:54SPEAKER_04: So definitely subscribe to the family sharing.
- 24:58SPEAKER_02: Do the family sharing.
- 25:00SPEAKER_02: The nice thing is too, if you do it on your dad's account, everything defaults to his credit card.
- 25:05SPEAKER_03: So dads are for the Apple account.
- 25:11SPEAKER_03: Defaulted to his.
- 25:13SPEAKER_03: Oopsie poopsie.
- 25:15SPEAKER_04: I did cancel it because I was like, oh no, dad's getting hit with all my subscriptions.
- 25:20SPEAKER_04: Why are you depriving yourself of your birthright?
- 25:22SPEAKER_02: I know, I know.
- 25:24SPEAKER_02: Um, it did default to my dad's credit card account, and so all of my subscriptions.
- 25:28SPEAKER_03: But it that in itself was a good audit because he does run a tight ship, and so his bookkeeper was like, hey, Candace, are these all your subscriptions?
- 25:38SPEAKER_04: I love that you gave him the opportunity to just make sure that he was being sensitive to all of his transactions.
- 25:47SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 25:47SPEAKER_04: That's one I did.
- 25:48SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it was really great.
- 25:49SPEAKER_04: So data secure.
- 25:51SPEAKER_04: Check.
- 25:52SPEAKER_04: Check.
- 25:52SPEAKER_04: You're welcome, Dara.
- 25:54SPEAKER_04: Welcome.
- 25:54SPEAKER_04: Um, no, I do love the idea of like legitimate family sharing.
- 26:01SPEAKER_04: Um she love it too.
- 26:04SPEAKER_04: Yes, yes.
- 26:06SPEAKER_04: Legitimate family sharing when possible.
- 26:10SPEAKER_04: Don't give your passwords.
- 26:12SPEAKER_04: Give your passwords out to anybody.
- 26:15SPEAKER_04: We're definitely not.
- 26:16SPEAKER_04: Your way around the system.
- 26:17SPEAKER_04: Um, but at the end of the day, did I use this recently in the last 30 days?
- 26:25SPEAKER_04: Would I rebuy this item today?
- 26:27SPEAKER_04: Would I rebuy this?
- 26:28SPEAKER_04: Just look at the psychology behind it.
- 26:30SPEAKER_04: Make a conscious decision.
- 26:32SPEAKER_04: That's it.
- 26:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 26:33SPEAKER_04: All right.
- 26:34SPEAKER_04: We did it.
- 26:35SPEAKER_04: Let us know how you did it.
- 26:37SPEAKER_04: Slide into the DMs, slide into our DMs.
- 26:40SPEAKER_04: Don't share your password for your subscriptions and our DMs.
- 26:44SPEAKER_01: I would love to hear from our audience like a surprising subscription that someone was like, oh my gosh, I lived in wherever, North Carolina two years ago, and I had a gym membership and I forgot to cancel it.
- 26:54SPEAKER_04: Tell us the craziest one you canceled.
- 26:57SPEAKER_04: That's what I want to know.
- 26:58SPEAKER_04: I want to know the craziest one you didn't know existed.
- 27:00SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 27:00SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 27:01SPEAKER_04: I I really do.
- 27:02SPEAKER_04: Um, I think that's a good one.
- 27:04SPEAKER_04: I want to know like something wild you didn't even know you had.
- 27:07SPEAKER_04: I bet you have a good one.
- 27:10SPEAKER_04: I've got a column of known, and then I've got a column of unknowns.
- 27:13SPEAKER_04: It's like you're gonna see.
- 27:16SPEAKER_04: Yeah, report back.
- 27:17SPEAKER_04: I know we're putting back okay.
- 27:18SPEAKER_04: Thank you so much for listening.
- 27:21SPEAKER_04: Like, subscribe.
- 27:23SPEAKER_04: Download.
- 27:24SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 27:25SPEAKER_04: All the things.
- 27:26SPEAKER_04: Let us know.
- 27:27SPEAKER_04: Let us know.
- 27:27SPEAKER_04: And if you gamify it with your friends, let us know how it goes.
- 27:30SPEAKER_04: Let us know what you guys um, you know, found out about each other.
- 27:35SPEAKER_04: I hope it makes it fun.
- 27:38SPEAKER_04: I hope it's not too mortifying.
- 27:40SPEAKER_04: I hope it's not.
- 27:40SPEAKER_04: And if it is, please share it with us.
- 27:44SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 27:45SPEAKER_01: Bye.
- 27:46SPEAKER_01: Okay, that was today's episode of WTF.
- 27:49SPEAKER_02: If you laughed, learned something, or felt a little less alone, make sure you hit follow.
- 27:55SPEAKER_01: And send this episode to a friend who might need it.
- 27:58SPEAKER_01: Women don't gatekeep, especially not the good stuff.

- 28:06SPEAKER_01: See you next time on WTF.
