Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: Hello, I'm marry am Mashery and this is the Iran
- 0:06Speaker 1: War today, our BBC News briefing bringing you up to
- 0:09Speaker 1: date with all you need to know from the last
- 0:11Speaker 1: twenty four hours in the US war with Iran. Let's
- 0:14Speaker 1: start with some of today's key developments.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Now.
- 0:17Speaker 3: Iran warns the Strait.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Of horm Moves will remain closed until the US meets
- 0:21Speaker 1: its demands, but Donald Trump says he wants comfort compensation
- 0:25Speaker 1: from Iran. Oil prices rise as an agreement between the
- 0:29Speaker 1: US and Iran and the Straight of hor Moos looks
- 0:31Speaker 1: increasingly unlikely.
- 0:32Speaker 3: Again, Iran chooses Mossern.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Razai to be the new security chief, alongside six new
- 0:38Speaker 1: appointments to the Revolutionary Guards and the Armed Forces. Well,
- 0:47Speaker 1: the conditions to open the Strait of horm Moves haven't
- 0:50Speaker 1: been met.
- 0:51Speaker 3: That's according to the Iranians. One of the things they.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Wanted was for the US to provide compensation. More on
- 0:57Speaker 1: that shortly, but that request has prompted, did the US
- 1:00Speaker 1: president to post on social media? He said, I am
- 1:04Speaker 1: likewise demanding compensation from Iran for all of the people
- 1:07Speaker 1: that they have killed and gravely wounded. Well, this latest
- 1:10Speaker 1: reaction from the US President comes after Iran said talks
- 1:14Speaker 1: with Oman on new shipping lanes are almost complete. Bat
- 1:18Speaker 1: said the opening of the Strait of Hormus would still
- 1:20Speaker 1: be subject to certain conditions. Well, let's remind you of
- 1:24Speaker 1: what the foreign minister said.
- 1:29Speaker 4: Negotiations with Aman are regarding the determination of a new
- 1:32Speaker 4: maritime route in the strait. These negotiations have progressed. Well,
- 1:38Speaker 4: I can say they are in the final stages and
- 1:41Speaker 4: the old existing routes will be replaced with new ones.
- 1:45Speaker 4: Specialists are currently working on the maps. Of course, this
- 1:49Speaker 4: does not mean the opening of the strait. This agreement
- 1:52Speaker 4: may take place, but the opening is contingent upon the
- 1:55Speaker 4: fulfillment of a set of other conditions, which have in
- 1:59Speaker 4: any case conveyed through intermediates.
- 2:03Speaker 3: Well, that was the foreign minister there.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Although he didn't reiterate those conditions last week, the regime
- 2:10Speaker 1: did say they include a number of things, an end
- 2:14Speaker 1: to US threats against Iran and hostilities against Iran's regional allies,
- 2:20Speaker 1: lifting the naval blockade that's currently in place on boats
- 2:24Speaker 1: entering and exiting Iranian ports, and withdrawing US naval and
- 2:29Speaker 1: air forces from near Iran, as well as payment of
- 2:33Speaker 1: war damages and indeed the removal of sanctions. On top
- 2:38Speaker 1: of that, the unconditional release of Iran's frozen assets. Well,
- 2:43Speaker 1: it doesn't appear to be something the US president is considering,
- 2:46Speaker 1: especially since he posted online that the US wants compensation.
- 2:51Speaker 1: In an interview with Axios, Donald Trump said his administration
- 2:54Speaker 1: is watching economic pressure mount on Iran.
- 2:57Speaker 3: He said, we are low keying it.
- 2:59Speaker 1: We are only semi negotiating with them, which is watching
- 3:02Speaker 1: Iran with its huge inflation and the fact they have
- 3:06Speaker 1: no money. It will work out. It always works out.
- 3:09Speaker 1: It's like a chess game. Well, those comments didn't go
- 3:12Speaker 1: unnoticed by the Iranian regime. The Foreign Ministry spokesman said,
- 3:16Speaker 1: lights out or lights on, Iranians showed they are professional
- 3:20Speaker 1: chess players. What joining me now is our North America
- 3:24Speaker 1: correspondent Daniel Bush and our Middle East correspondent Donaldson. Daniel
- 3:28Speaker 1: to you, first, remind us what Donald Trump said exactly
- 3:31Speaker 1: in that interview.
- 3:34Speaker 5: Well, he seemed to suggest that he may ratchet back
- 3:37Speaker 5: military pressure on Iran, that they are semi negotiating in
- 3:41Speaker 5: the president's words. This comes after multiple times in recent
- 3:44Speaker 5: weeks where President Trump has threatened to do the exact opposite,
- 3:48Speaker 5: to ratchet up military pressure, to increase the war, at
- 3:51Speaker 5: one point recently saying that he had held off on
- 3:54Speaker 5: an attack that would have been the biggest since World
- 3:56Speaker 5: War II in the history of the world. So this
- 3:58Speaker 5: was an effort by the press and apparently to at
- 4:01Speaker 5: least sort of lower that temperature a little bit and
- 4:04Speaker 5: suggests that hey, the US can wait Iran out. Of course,
- 4:08Speaker 5: that is a gamble here in the United States, where
- 4:10Speaker 5: there is a midterm election coming up just around the
- 4:13Speaker 5: corner in a couple of months, and there's mounting pressure
- 4:15Speaker 5: on President Trump to move quickly to end this war,
- 4:18Speaker 5: to reopen the strait of horm moves to lower the
- 4:20Speaker 5: price of oil and more. And so the present suggesting
- 4:23Speaker 5: over the weekend that he may not be in a hurry, Well,
- 4:26Speaker 5: he may not be, but his party certainly is here
- 4:28Speaker 5: in the United States.
- 4:29Speaker 1: So the prospect of a peace deal, then, Daniel, in
- 4:32Speaker 1: terms of the US president.
- 4:35Speaker 5: Well, it's about as far off as it has been
- 4:37Speaker 5: for several weeks. It's been a little bit of a
- 4:39Speaker 5: holding pattern. But just in that true social that you
- 4:41Speaker 5: posted a moment ago where President Trump introduced a new
- 4:45Speaker 5: demand on Iran. In response to the Iranian suggestion of compensation,
- 4:49Speaker 5: claims President Trump saying there that he now wants compensation
- 4:52Speaker 5: for Iran for decades of what he says has been
- 4:56Speaker 5: violenced from the regime. That is not likely to be
- 4:58Speaker 5: something that Roan would agree to. President Trump also pointing
- 5:02Speaker 5: out that he would want compensation for the victims who
- 5:05Speaker 5: were killed in mass protests there earlier this year. Again
- 5:08Speaker 5: not something that Iran would presumably be interested in entertaining.
- 5:11Speaker 5: So it's the latest example of just when there seemed
- 5:15Speaker 5: to maybe potentially be breakthrough in diplomatic talks, president Trump
- 5:20Speaker 5: introduces more wrinkles into it, and when it comes to
- 5:22Speaker 5: the Strait of Horror Mooz still pretty far off from
- 5:25Speaker 5: a deal. At least one of the United States would
- 5:27Speaker 5: seemingly be willing to accept.
- 5:29Speaker 3: Daniel, thank you.
- 5:30Speaker 6: Well.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Let's cross back to Middleast correspondent John Donnison, who is
- 5:33Speaker 1: in Jerusalem, and John, do you feel that we're a
- 5:36Speaker 1: stalemate in the Straight of hor Moose?
- 5:38Speaker 3: What's the feeling in Israel on that.
- 5:42Speaker 7: I think that's a pretty fair assessment. The Strait of
- 5:45Speaker 7: horn Moose hasn't reopened in any meaningful way despite numerous
- 5:50Speaker 7: spledges from President Trump that it would happen soon, and
- 5:53Speaker 7: encouraging words that progress was being made. I don't think
- 5:57Speaker 7: there's any appetite from either the Americans or the Iranians
- 6:00Speaker 7: to resume full scale war. But the carrot of diplomacy
- 6:07Speaker 7: from the United States hasn't worked, and the stick of
- 6:09Speaker 7: military action hasn't worked either. So yeah, we are in
- 6:14Speaker 7: a bit of a holding pattern. And I think the
- 6:16Speaker 7: fact that the price of oil is going up again
- 6:18Speaker 7: reflects that.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Let's talk a little bit about one of Iran's conditions, John,
- 6:23Speaker 1: because one of those conditions is an enter hostilities against
- 6:26Speaker 1: regional allies.
- 6:27Speaker 3: But is Israel likely to ever agree to that.
- 6:34Speaker 7: No, I don't think it is. And it's important to
- 6:36Speaker 7: remember that we have three unresolved wars in this region.
- 6:39Speaker 7: We have the war between the United States, Israel and Iran.
- 6:43Speaker 7: We also have the war in Gaza, which that is
- 6:46Speaker 7: still rumbling on at a lower level, and also the
- 6:50Speaker 7: war in Lebanon between Israel and Hezbola. And particularly with
- 6:53Speaker 7: regards to the conflict in Lebanon, Iran has insisted that
- 6:58Speaker 7: that must be part of a broader peace deal. They
- 7:02Speaker 7: want Israeli forces to withdraw from southern Lebanon, where they
- 7:06Speaker 7: continue to occupy a large part of the country. And
- 7:10Speaker 7: although there has been a dialing down of violence in
- 7:13Speaker 7: southern Lebanon, while Israeli troops remain there Hezbola, Iran's Allai
- 7:18Speaker 7: obviously not happy with that. There is the possibility of
- 7:21Speaker 7: violence flaring up, and there is an appetite in Israel
- 7:24Speaker 7: for that water resume with elections coming up here in
- 7:27Speaker 7: Israel too, and similarly with Gaza, there is an appetite
- 7:31Speaker 7: to continue the fight against Hamas, another ally of Iran.
- 7:36Speaker 7: So no, I don't think there is any likelihood that
- 7:40Speaker 7: Israel is going to say it is prepared to stop
- 7:43Speaker 7: its aggression as Iran would see it, against the likes
- 7:47Speaker 7: of Hamas and Hezbolla.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Okay, John, thank you very much, Daniel, thank you to
- 7:52Speaker 1: you too. Well, investors are digesting the latest developments and
- 7:58Speaker 1: what they mean for the markets and indeed for those
- 8:01Speaker 1: oil prices. Well, let's cross live and speak to our
- 8:03Speaker 1: business correspondence, Smearra has sagn Samra, what of oil prices
- 8:06Speaker 1: and indeed markets being doing today.
- 8:10Speaker 6: Well, look, oil prices are again under a lot of pressure.
- 8:14Speaker 6: As I came in the last check, we saw that
- 8:17Speaker 6: Brent crude was trading at around eighty seven dollars a barrel.
- 8:20Speaker 6: You'll remember that last week, on the hopes that there
- 8:23Speaker 6: could be some sort of deal to reopen the strait,
- 8:26Speaker 6: we saw that the price of oil was trading at
- 8:28Speaker 6: about eighty dollars. So clearly, from an investor point of view,
- 8:32Speaker 6: that oil price is climbing because, as John pointed out,
- 8:36Speaker 6: that STALEMATEGG continues and there doesn't seem to be any
- 8:40Speaker 6: indication that there's going to be any let up or
- 8:43Speaker 6: any cessation of the violence, or coming together for any
- 8:47Speaker 6: kind of an agreement. And that means that the crucial
- 8:50Speaker 6: shipping way, the Straight of Horror moves remains closed to
- 8:54Speaker 6: so much shipping. And remember that a fifth of the
- 8:57Speaker 6: world's energy supplies, namely oil, passes through that strait. What's
- 9:03Speaker 6: making this even more complicated is when you look at
- 9:07Speaker 6: the global oil reserves that had really blunded some of
- 9:11Speaker 6: the early impact of the war. Those reserves are now
- 9:15Speaker 6: at critical levels, and so we could be emerging quite
- 9:19Speaker 6: soon into an energy emergency because the strait remains closed.
- 9:26Speaker 3: Samara, thank you.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Oh. Inside Iran, they've appointed a new leader of the
- 9:33Speaker 1: National Security Council. Moss En Resai is a former commander
- 9:37Speaker 1: of the Revolutionary God. He'll now have a key role
- 9:39Speaker 1: in deciding how Iran pursues the conflict with the US
- 9:42Speaker 1: and Israel. As well as this, Iran has made six
- 9:45Speaker 1: new appointments to the Revolutionary Gods and the armed forces.
- 9:48Speaker 3: I'll to help us understand what all this means.
- 9:50Speaker 1: I'm joined by Baron Abossi from BBC Persian and Baron
- 9:53Speaker 1: who is this new security leader and how important is
- 9:56Speaker 1: this appointment?
- 9:57Speaker 2: So he was the commander of the yo Jesid Islamic
- 10:00Speaker 2: Revolution and in regard course for sixteen years, including during the
- 10:04Speaker 2: war between Iran and Iraq back in the nineteen eighties,
- 10:08Speaker 2: which lasted about eight years. So he was at the
- 10:11Speaker 2: center of the most consequential decisions in the history of
- 10:15Speaker 2: the Islamic Republic. He wrote a letter to the former
- 10:19Speaker 2: Supreme Leader, Royal Homenia about the end of the war,
- 10:22Speaker 2: saying that if ira wanted to continue fighting against Iraq,
- 10:26Speaker 2: it needed a lot of resources, military and financial resources,
- 10:29Speaker 2: which was described as shocking by the then Supreme Leader,
- 10:32Speaker 2: and shortly after Iran accepted a cease fire deal with Iraq.
- 10:38Speaker 2: His appointment to the Supreme National Security Council is significant
- 10:42Speaker 2: because this body is one of the most important decision
- 10:46Speaker 2: making bodies in the Islamic Republic when it comes to
- 10:51Speaker 2: making decisions about the war, of course, but also foreign
- 10:54Speaker 2: policy national security. We don't know why his predecessor was outside,
- 11:00Speaker 2: because Mohamad was appointed only in March, so it's I
- 11:05Speaker 2: think it's too early to say whether mos aresol is
- 11:08Speaker 2: appointments would signify a fundamental change to run the strategy
- 11:14Speaker 2: towards the word, but it definitely is a significant change
- 11:17Speaker 2: in terms of the people who are sitting at the
- 11:19Speaker 2: table and making those decisions.
- 11:21Speaker 1: And there are be more appointments to the revolutionary regards
- 11:23Speaker 1: the armed forces. What are all these appointments tell us
- 11:26Speaker 1: about the direction in which Irana is going.
- 11:28Speaker 2: So it seems that moshal Baramene is trying to put
- 11:32Speaker 2: his own stamp on the security and political establishment. These
- 11:37Speaker 2: people who've been appointed today, they are not new faces.
- 11:39Speaker 2: They've been in the security and military apparatus for decades.
- 11:44Speaker 2: But he's trying to show that he's in control. He's
- 11:47Speaker 2: in charge. One of the interesting appointments is the appointment
- 11:52Speaker 2: of one of his key alloys or centaire to the
- 11:56Speaker 2: head of Passage paramilitary force that is in charge of
- 12:00Speaker 2: One of his main role has been the crackdown on
- 12:02Speaker 2: anti government protests inside of your own. He was outsted
- 12:06Speaker 2: under Mohabo's father, the previous Supreme leader. The fact that
- 12:10Speaker 2: he's been brought back into the fault it shows that
- 12:13Speaker 2: Moshabo Homony is trying to reassert his control. He's been
- 12:16Speaker 2: absent from the public eye since this start of the war,
- 12:20Speaker 2: which killed his father and reported left him injured. There
- 12:24Speaker 2: have been questions about who is really making the.
- 12:27Speaker 1: Decisions, whether he's even alive or not exactly, questions about
- 12:30Speaker 1: that right he hasn't been.
- 12:32Speaker 2: Seeing there has been There hasn't been any videos or
- 12:35Speaker 2: audio of him. So it seems that he's trying to
- 12:38Speaker 2: send this message that he's in church, he's in control,
- 12:40Speaker 2: and he's making the decisions.
- 12:41Speaker 3: Okay, Baron, good to talk to you. Thank you very much. Wow.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Whether you're joining us on YouTube, TikTok, sounds, radio or TV,
- 12:49Speaker 1: thank you for your time. We'll be back at the
- 12:51Speaker 1: same time tomorrow with the Iraun war. Today
