- 0:00Speaker 1: Craig Way is my name. Glad to have you with us,
- 0:02Speaker 1: and we're with you up until five o'clock this afternoon,
- 0:06Speaker 1: and you know that we have a basketball game tonight
- 0:13Speaker 1: to bring you and we'll have that for you six
- 0:20Speaker 1: thirty airtime and seven o'clock tip here on the thirteen
- 0:28Speaker 1: under the zone and also on nine eight point one
- 0:29Speaker 1: FMK that we're going to hear from Rodney Terry came
- 0:31Speaker 1: up as Texas takes on New Mexico State tonight. How
- 0:35Speaker 1: about your thoughts on those NBA games last night? How
- 0:40Speaker 1: about the Atlanta Hawks, Yeah, beating the New York Knicks.
- 0:44Speaker 1: This is a team that's fourteen and twelve going to
- 0:46Speaker 1: the final four of the Emirates NBA Cup.
- 0:50Speaker 2: I said yesterday the Knicks will win. Nope, Nope, does
- 0:54Speaker 2: not matter. DeAndre Hunter having a good game, Trey Young
- 0:58Speaker 2: eight of twenty two shooting, you know, but he did
- 1:01Speaker 2: his Tray Young thing, you know, mocking the New York crowd.
- 1:03Speaker 1: There's just it's early.
- 1:05Speaker 2: For the next so I'm not gonna, you know, read
- 1:07Speaker 2: too much into the next and how they played in December,
- 1:09Speaker 2: but there is something to just Trey Young in the
- 1:11Speaker 2: Atlanta Hawks, who you know, have been an okay team.
- 1:14Speaker 2: They have that one Eastern Conference final appearance a few
- 1:17Speaker 2: years ago. Besides that, have been a borderline playing team.
- 1:20Speaker 2: But for some reason, and you know, credit Trey Young
- 1:23Speaker 2: that you know, in the biggest spotlights, he shows up,
- 1:28Speaker 2: the Hawks show up, and they just you know, they
- 1:30Speaker 2: appeared to be the Knicks. Is Achilles heel. Yeah.
- 1:35Speaker 1: I asked you a couple of weeks ago, which thought
- 1:36Speaker 1: about Jalen Johnson.
- 1:39Speaker 2: What a year he's having. Wow, he's been He's been
- 1:42Speaker 2: a huge addition to the Hawks. And what a draft find.
- 1:46Speaker 1: You know.
- 1:47Speaker 2: You know, Trey Young is always going to be in
- 1:49Speaker 2: trade rumors, and we'll see what the future holds for
- 1:53Speaker 2: for Trey Young and if they can really contend and
- 1:55Speaker 2: win with him as their point guard. But I'll tell
- 1:58Speaker 2: you what, Craig, they have found something with Jalen Johnson
- 2:02Speaker 2: that if they decide to move on for Trey Young
- 2:05Speaker 2: and try to build around possibly Jalen Johnson, it makes sense.
- 2:09Speaker 2: I mean, they have a good roster. I love I
- 2:12Speaker 2: love their team and what they have outside.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Of Troy Young.
- 2:15Speaker 2: I'm not the biggest Troy Young fan, I'll be honest
- 2:17Speaker 2: with you, but I love dere Hunter. I love Dyson Daniels.
- 2:20Speaker 2: He's a fantastic defender.
- 2:22Speaker 1: He's been. He's having a great season offensively.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Of course, he still got bogged on, you know, the
- 2:27Speaker 2: number one overall draft pick, reesa sche You know, we'll
- 2:29Speaker 2: see what happens with him and Larry Nance Junior. You know,
- 2:32Speaker 2: he's a he's a really good bench piece. You know,
- 2:35Speaker 2: he played a big role for the Pelicans the last
- 2:37Speaker 2: couple of years and with the Lakers, so I like
- 2:40Speaker 2: their roster. I just don't like Troy Young. You know,
- 2:43Speaker 2: he's part of that helio centric offense. Every time you know,
- 2:48Speaker 2: Atlanta gets the ball on offense, it's gonna be a
- 2:51Speaker 2: lot of dribble, dribble, dribble, drible screen all right, ree
- 2:54Speaker 2: screen another screen. You know either's going to be a
- 2:56Speaker 2: step back three or a floater in the lane or
- 2:59Speaker 2: maybe you know Young will will dish out.
- 3:01Speaker 1: He does average what was just a pre season but
- 3:03Speaker 1: get it to Jalen Johnson, right, yeah.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Or you get rid of Trae Young and you know,
- 3:07Speaker 2: run the offense a little bit better. So we'll see.
- 3:10Speaker 2: But it makes yourself figuring some things out, all right.
- 3:13Speaker 1: So the NBA's the Emirates NBA Cup the N Season
- 3:20Speaker 1: Tournament which rest in peace in hes in tournament a
- 3:24Speaker 1: right when it was formerly known as N Season Tournament.
- 3:28Speaker 1: It gained some credibility because Lebron and the Lakers won
- 3:30Speaker 1: it last year, right, yes, okay, and they I think
- 3:33Speaker 1: they had a ceremony, right, hung a banner and then
- 3:36Speaker 1: they lost in the first round. Yes, exactly, so, so
- 3:42Speaker 1: they won. So they won it last year, so they
- 3:44Speaker 1: gained a little bit of uh that that N Season
- 3:48Speaker 1: Tournament gained a little bit of credibility? Did it a
- 3:51Speaker 1: little bit because the Lakers won? Yeah? Because Lebron the
- 3:54Speaker 1: name branding, I think.
- 3:55Speaker 2: So, all right, let me ask you this. Do you
- 3:58Speaker 2: know how much it cost to buy a ticket right
- 3:59Speaker 2: now to the whatever it's called. It's ninety dollars resell.
- 4:02Speaker 2: It's gone from three hundred to ninety dollars if Lebron
- 4:06Speaker 2: is playing in it.
- 4:06Speaker 1: I agree with your point. That's for a point, okay, okay.
- 4:09Speaker 1: The point that I was getting to is the Lakers
- 4:11Speaker 1: win it last year, it gets a little bit of credibility.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Now here it is in year two and your four
- 4:18Speaker 1: teams that are playing for the Emirates NBA Cup The
- 4:23Speaker 1: four teams are Milwaukee, Oklahoma City, Atlanta, and Houston. The
- 4:30Speaker 1: Rockets who beat the Warriors ninety one ninety last night.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Can you blame it for the ticket prices dropping the
- 4:39Speaker 1: ninety eight dollars? I don't know.
- 4:40Speaker 2: I mean, okay, see gonna be the NBA champion season.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Boston is out of it, right, Boston's out of it.
- 4:48Speaker 2: I just named the four teams. It's Milwaukee's Oklahoma Johannis.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Okay, they were in it last year at Milwaukee, Oklahoma City, Uh,
- 5:00Speaker 1: Atlanta and Houston. Now does that move the needle for you?
- 5:05Speaker 1: You're an NBA guy, so it's gonna move the needle
- 5:07Speaker 1: for you anyway. And your team's in it. But if
- 5:10Speaker 1: your team is not in it, let's let's uh, if
- 5:14Speaker 1: Dallas had won it, had won over Oklahoma City the
- 5:17Speaker 1: other night, would you be that jazzed up about it?
- 5:21Speaker 2: I think so, Rockets, Mavericks, you know, you know, let's
- 5:24Speaker 2: the in season state or end season in state kind of.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Don't say the R word, don't rivalry, don't. I don't
- 5:34Speaker 1: think it's a round. I think I think Mavericks and
- 5:36Speaker 1: Spurs are more of a rivalry than Mavericks Rockets. The
- 5:38Speaker 1: Rockets don't really have the way either are really rivals.
- 5:42Speaker 1: I don't.
- 5:42Speaker 2: I think NBA rivalries have been have been lost for
- 5:44Speaker 2: the most part, it's more about just players first player.
- 5:48Speaker 2: It seems to be more rivalries.
- 5:49Speaker 1: I don't.
- 5:49Speaker 2: I think it's interesting because you know, on the Western
- 5:53Speaker 2: Conference side of it, for for Oklahoma City, they're the
- 5:57Speaker 2: favorite to win the finals, and he had this young
- 5:59Speaker 2: Rockets team that you know they have they have a
- 6:02Speaker 2: lot of depth. You know, I think the rotation might
- 6:04Speaker 2: be too big. We'll see what happens when that come
- 6:06Speaker 2: trade deadline. But you know, they're kind of in the
- 6:08Speaker 2: same spot that uh, okay see was last year a
- 6:11Speaker 2: couple years ago. You know, they're chomping at the bit
- 6:14Speaker 2: to kind of prove themselves said, hey, we're here. In
- 6:16Speaker 2: last night's whatever, Golden State was a big step towards that.
- 6:19Speaker 2: And Steve Kerr used the word that you love to use, Craig.
- 6:23Speaker 2: He called the the referees last night unconutionable, unconscionable. I've
- 6:28Speaker 2: never heard anyone else use that except for you, but
- 6:31Speaker 2: you use it.
- 6:32Speaker 1: All the time. That unconscionable.
- 6:35Speaker 2: That's like what if if you had like a list
- 6:37Speaker 2: of like, Craig way Go two phrases unconscionable.
- 6:40Speaker 1: I think it's up there for you. Trepidation is up there.
- 6:45Speaker 1: I've used trepidation, unconscionable, conscia. But Steve Kerr, you know
- 6:50Speaker 1: called I don't remember. I mean, I've used it before,
- 6:56Speaker 1: but I don't think that's a have you with trepidation?
- 6:59Speaker 1: Yes now?
- 7:00Speaker 2: But but also a part of this, Craig is just like,
- 7:02Speaker 2: you know, the the ratings are down, and you know,
- 7:04Speaker 2: I don't want to be the rating guy.
- 7:06Speaker 1: I just don't think.
- 7:07Speaker 2: You know, the way we consume sports now is like
- 7:11Speaker 2: it's so easy to follow sports just on your phone,
- 7:13Speaker 2: right on Twitter. You catch the highlights later, your friends
- 7:17Speaker 2: text you. I feel like NBA is almost just like
- 7:21Speaker 2: right now it's in it's a Twitter sport until you
- 7:23Speaker 2: get to the playoffs and in the finals, because it's
- 7:26Speaker 2: you know, how do people really want to do people
- 7:28Speaker 2: really care about you know, Nix and Hawks, even if
- 7:31Speaker 2: it's played on a fancy court in a fancy arena
- 7:34Speaker 2: in Las Vegas. No, you know, I didn't watch. I
- 7:37Speaker 2: didn't really you know, watch the game, but hey on Twitter,
- 7:40Speaker 2: so why should they be any more?
- 7:42Speaker 1: Fired? Up about the Hawks and the Bucks exactly. So
- 7:45Speaker 1: that's that's a.
- 7:48Speaker 2: You hope, like, Okay, you have Gianni's first Trey Young,
- 7:51Speaker 2: but you know, Troy Young is not the most appealing
- 7:55Speaker 2: player his style play, and you know, Giannis, he's not American,
- 7:58Speaker 2: and I guess that's a big deal with some American
- 8:00Speaker 2: and even on even on the Rockets thunderside, like Shay
- 8:02Speaker 2: is my favorite NBA player right now. But for you know,
- 8:06Speaker 2: just a casual NBA fane. You know, I understand that
- 8:10Speaker 2: you care more about watching Lebron James play or Luca
- 8:14Speaker 2: but even like NBA fans don't really like Jokic and
- 8:17Speaker 2: I think he's the best player in the league.
- 8:19Speaker 1: So it's it's a problem that I don't know the
- 8:21Speaker 1: answer to.
- 8:22Speaker 2: And I just wonder. It's December. You're trying to find
- 8:24Speaker 2: ways to get people interested. I mean, we're talking about it.
- 8:27Speaker 2: That's a step up. But again, the Lakers won the
- 8:29Speaker 2: tournament last year, Craig, and what happened in the playoffs
- 8:31Speaker 2: and lost in the first round.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm not a big fan of nd season tournaments.
- 8:35Speaker 1: It's just just something differently. They don't like it really
- 8:38Speaker 1: in hockey or soccer or whatever soccer. I think he's
- 8:42Speaker 1: a little bit different in that in that so the
- 8:45Speaker 1: the in season tournament, by the way, in that.
- 8:49Speaker 2: In the champ you know, the Champions League is there
- 8:50Speaker 2: in CeON tournament. That's because that's that's all the best
- 8:52Speaker 2: teams in Europe, right, you know, So it's different because
- 8:56Speaker 2: in the regular season Premier League, you'll only play teams
- 8:58Speaker 2: in the Premier League. But with a Champs League of
- 9:00Speaker 2: Europa League or whatever, right, different playing you're playing you know,
- 9:03Speaker 2: you can be playing real or you know, the NBA
- 9:06Speaker 2: NA that you know, you're just playing your own league.
- 9:09Speaker 1: So if the NFL did an end season thing, now it'd.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Be fun the NBA side, you know, maybe you final
- 9:15Speaker 2: way to incorporate I don't know FOBA somehow.
- 9:19Speaker 1: But at the same time that would that would be
- 9:21Speaker 1: more intriguing to me, like would you you know, so,
- 9:23Speaker 1: if like last night the Bucks or the Hawks were
- 9:26Speaker 1: playing I don't know, the Seflakia national team, would you
- 9:30Speaker 1: care about it? Or if it was like the real
- 9:32Speaker 1: Madrid FOBA team, would you care about it? I mean,
- 9:35Speaker 1: because they're gonna blow them out, right, yeah, yeah, I
- 9:38Speaker 1: don't know. And then the whole day about the games
- 9:40Speaker 1: counting in the regular season standings, and you're like, yeah,
- 9:44Speaker 1: I stort really understand how any of that works. Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 9:47Speaker 1: All right, up next, we're gonna hear from long worn
- 9:50Speaker 1: center Jake Majors, and we'll hear from Rodney Terry talking
- 9:54Speaker 1: Texas basketball when we continue here on Sports Radio AM
- 9:56Speaker 1: thirteen under the Zone.
