- 0:15Speaker 1: Ye are my friends, if ye do the things which
- 0:18Speaker 1: I command you, John fifteen fourteen. Our Lord has said
- 0:24Speaker 1: what he gave us as proof of his friendship. He
- 0:27Speaker 1: gave his life for us. He now tells us what
- 0:30Speaker 1: our part is to be, to do the things which
- 0:33Speaker 1: he commands. He gave his life to secure a place
- 0:36Speaker 1: for his love in our hearts to rule us. The
- 0:39Speaker 1: response his love calls us to and empowers us for,
- 0:43Speaker 1: is that we do what he commands us. As we
- 0:46Speaker 1: know the dying love, we shall joyfully obey its commands.
- 0:51Speaker 1: As we obey the commands, we shall know the love
- 0:54Speaker 1: more fully. Christ had already said, if ye keep my commandments,
- 0:59Speaker 1: ye shall abide in my love. He counts it needful
- 1:03Speaker 1: to repeat the truth again. The one proof of our
- 1:06Speaker 1: faith in his love, the one way to abide in it,
- 1:11Speaker 1: the one mark of being true Branches, is to do
- 1:14Speaker 1: the things which he commands us. He began with absolute
- 1:19Speaker 1: surrender of his life for us. He can ask nothing
- 1:22Speaker 1: less from us. This alone is a life in his friendship.
- 1:28Speaker 1: This truth of the imperative necessity of obedience doing all
- 1:33Speaker 1: that Christ's commands us has not the place in our
- 1:36Speaker 1: Christian teaching and living that Christ meant it to have.
- 1:40Speaker 1: We have given a far higher place to privilege than
- 1:43Speaker 1: to duty. We have not considered implicit obedience as a
- 1:47Speaker 1: condition of true discipleship. The secret thought that it is
- 1:51Speaker 1: impossible to do the things He commands us, and that
- 1:55Speaker 1: therefore it cannot be expected of us, and a subtle
- 1:58Speaker 1: and unconscious feeling that sinning is a necessity, have frequently
- 2:03Speaker 1: robbed both precepts and promises of their power. The whole
- 2:08Speaker 1: relation to Christ has become clouded and lowered. The waiting
- 2:12Speaker 1: on his teaching, the power to hear and obey his voice,
- 2:16Speaker 1: and through obedience to enjoy his love and friendship, have
- 2:19Speaker 1: been enfeebled by a terrible mistake. Do let us try
- 2:24Speaker 1: to return to the true position. Take Christ's words as
- 2:28Speaker 1: most literally true, and make nothing less the law of
- 2:31Speaker 1: our life. Ye are my friends, If ye do the
- 2:35Speaker 1: things that I command you, surely our Lord asks nothing
- 2:40Speaker 1: less than that. We heartily and truthfully say, yea Lord,
- 2:44Speaker 1: what thou dost command that will I do. These commands
- 2:49Speaker 1: are to be done as a proof of friendship. The
- 2:52Speaker 1: power to do them rests entirely on the personal relationship
- 2:56Speaker 1: to Jesus. For a friend I could do, I would
- 3:00Speaker 1: not for another. The friendship of Jesus is so heavenly
- 3:04Speaker 1: and wonderful. It comes to us so as the power
- 3:07Speaker 1: of a divine love, entering in and taking possession the
- 3:12Speaker 1: unbroken fellowship with Himself is so essential to it that
- 3:17Speaker 1: it implies and imparts a joy and a love which
- 3:20Speaker 1: make the obedience a delight. The liberty to claim the
- 3:25Speaker 1: friendship of Jesus, the power to enjoy it, the grace
- 3:29Speaker 1: to prove it in all its blessedness, all come as
- 3:33Speaker 1: we do the things he commands us. Is not the
- 3:37Speaker 1: one thing needful for us that we ask our Lord
- 3:41Speaker 1: to reveal himself to us in the dying love in
- 3:44Speaker 1: which he proved himself our friend. And then listen as
- 3:48Speaker 1: he says to us, ye are my friends. As we
- 3:52Speaker 1: see what our friend has done for us, and what
- 3:55Speaker 1: an unspeakable blessedness it is to have him call us friends.
- 4:00Speaker 1: The doing his commands will become the natural fruit of
- 4:03Speaker 1: our life and his love. We shall not fear to say,
- 4:07Speaker 1: yea Lord, we are thy friends, and do what thou
- 4:11Speaker 1: dost command us. If ye do yes, it is in
- 4:16Speaker 1: doing that we are blessed, That we abide in his love,
- 4:20Speaker 1: that we enjoy his friendship. If ye do what I
- 4:24Speaker 1: command you, O, my Lord, let thy holy friendship lead
- 4:29Speaker 1: me into the love of all thy commands. And let
- 4:32Speaker 1: the doing of thy commands lead me ever deeper into
- 4:36Speaker 1: thy friendship. End of Chapter twenty seven.
