Transcript
- 0:10Right. Good afternoon, Welcome to
- 0:12Miller and Condon. See Iowa Sports Radio Network
- 0:16back to Iowa based programming for the next 06 hours.
- 0:20Thank you for starting your afternoon with us as Trent and I
- 0:22will take you up until 2. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:26program here today. We'll start at the bottom of the
- 0:29hour. David Eichold, He was in
- 0:30Indianapolis over the weekend. Want to pick his brain on what
- 0:33he saw and what game day is like at what do we call it, Game
- 0:37bridge. Gainbridge.
- 0:39Gainbridge. Yes, one of the Pacers and the
- 0:42Fever. Was watching the feed on ABC5
- 0:46here locally for us. I know.
- 0:47That's where the game was last night, Yes, I watched it on the
- 0:49NBA now. ATV also had it, but I watched
- 0:52it there and I got a kick out of the local commercials for
- 0:56Indiana that were on were they Bob Smith's Mitsubishi?
- 1:02And then there was one for Gainbridge, though.
- 1:04That's why I popped into my mind when he said that, that Caitlin
- 1:06Clark, of course, was a part of. But yeah, we got the local feed
- 1:09on that one, which was interesting.
- 1:11Absolutely. Well, we'll get into that is the
- 1:13fever coughed, went up late last night.
- 1:16Well, they tried to come back, coughed it up early, if you
- 1:18truth be told. So we'll do David Eichelt on
- 1:20Hawkeye topics and pick his brain on what it's like to
- 1:23witness a fever game in person at home.
- 1:26We'll do that at the bottom of the hour.
- 1:28Hour number two, we'll head to Chicago as we do every Wednesday
- 1:30or most Wednesdays. David Kaplan will join us
- 1:33talking Chicago sports. Big win for the Cubs last night
- 1:37as their offense once again came to life.
- 1:39Tyone pitched very well. We'll do that. chicago-based
- 1:43topics with the cap man Centurion Stone of Iowa sponsors
- 1:47Cappy on a weekly basis. And then with the first
- 1:50checkpoint in baseball, the unofficially first checkpoint,
- 1:54the Memorial Day weekend, which is quickly approaching.
- 1:57Maybe the surprise of our regional teams, the Saint Louis
- 1:59Cardinals, who most would have thought would be not having the
- 2:02year that they are. Yes, they lost yesterday to
- 2:05scuba, but they got to scuba, chased him after five and 2/3
- 2:09innings, which have been not been the case for any times he's
- 2:13towed the rubber this year. But we'll talk about the
- 2:15Cardinals. And is this sustainable?
- 2:17Brian Walton on that at 1:30, Trends, plays of the day coming
- 2:20up. We will get to hear his thoughts
- 2:23on whether it's NHLNBA or WNBA or MLB.
- 2:28Well, let's start with the games from last night and I want to
- 2:31start with the NBA. If you'd be good enough to go
- 2:34there with me. And look, it was a 26 point win.
- 2:37It was AT Wolves team that took the lead in the locker room,
- 2:42actually still had the lead midway through the third quarter
- 2:46and then they lose by 26. But the story to me and it just
- 2:50drives me nuts. Why does SGA feel he has to play
- 2:53that way? Trent, this guy is looking, he
- 2:55is flopping Marcus Smart and wants to, you know, spend some
- 3:00time with him this summer to brush up on some of these
- 3:03skills. It's he's he's so good that he
- 3:06doesn't need to play this way yet.
- 3:08He knows he's going to get the calls, so he may as well keep
- 3:11doing it. And it drives me crazy.
- 3:13I I feel like I was ahead of the curve with James Harden before
- 3:16it became invoked to hate James Harden because of the way that
- 3:18he played. And this is the exact same
- 3:20thing. It's not basketball.
- 3:22It is not aesthetically pleasing.
- 3:24Hey, you get calls, but there's also a level where finally James
- 3:28Harden, those calls started to dissipate.
- 3:31They started to pull back. And SGA is not at that level.
- 3:33He's getting every single one of them.
- 3:37And it's not just the flopping, it's the hoots, it's the
- 3:40hollers, it's the letting out, the grunts.
- 3:42It's those things you're cheating.
- 3:45You're cheating and you're too talented of a player to have to
- 3:47cheat to get it. That is not basketball.
- 3:50A new thing that has been in vogue now the last five years or
- 3:53so is the guys that get bumped and they throw their head.
- 3:55Back does it every time. I I hate that.
- 3:58And I see it. I remember a couple years ago I
- 4:01was doing an event out in Vegas, an AEU event.
- 4:03And I remember that and, and how many kids, 7 eighth graders
- 4:08picked up on it that were doing that at that level.
- 4:10And now those guys, they're heroes are, and now those guys
- 4:13are in high school. Some of those guys are moving
- 4:14out to college. That's what we see in a
- 4:16permeates and people are watching this and they think,
- 4:19oh, that's how I play. No, that's not how you play and
- 4:22you couple it or the way they play on the other end of the
- 4:24floor. It's the Tom Izzo school about.
- 4:27The turnovers that they forced yesterday 17/18.
- 4:30And early on, you could see the Timberwolves were rattled by
- 4:33that. You know, it's that sheer
- 4:35physicality that they play with because about five times down
- 4:38the floor, I'm not going to call it every time.
- 4:39No, Tom Izzo, Dick Bennett, Beau Ryan, that brand of basketball,
- 4:43it's not fun to watch, No. And this is what we're going to
- 4:47get. The other part about the
- 4:48Thunder, though, is they're so deep they're fine with it
- 4:51because they know because of their depth, they can play that
- 4:53way. Where you go the other side.
- 4:55Jay McDaniel also plays that way.
- 4:56Let's be honest. But not to the extent I don't
- 4:58think. He's up on him.
- 5:00No, he is a great defender and he is physical as a defender,
- 5:04but he followed out well. There's one guy like that on the
- 5:07Timberwolves. They got five guys like that on
- 5:10the other side. And maybe the ringleader is
- 5:13Caruso. Oh.
- 5:14Man. What does he guard you?
- 5:16This story of Caruso, a guy that for long stretches last series
- 5:21was guarding Yokich, and now he's guarding Randall and he
- 5:26guarded John Moran in the first round.
- 5:29I know it was laughable, but still.
- 5:30But but your point is he's guarding guys 63687 feet.
- 5:35It doesn't matter. And he's able to do it at an
- 5:38elite level at 6 foot 5 and that he has that kind of strength,
- 5:43that kind of versatility. Texas He.
- 5:45Was an A&M guy. A&M OK.
- 5:47I believe he was on the A&M team that came back against you and I
- 5:52thanks I. Think you know what?
- 5:54You could be right? Yeah.
- 5:55What a what a collapse that was. What a was it all time?
- 5:59You and I had said some, as we talked about before the
- 6:02tournament, some of the greatest moments, both positive and on
- 6:06the other side of that argument, you're right.
- 6:08I think you're right, Trent. I believe he did play on that
- 6:10team. This team for the Thunder,
- 6:12they're deep and yet with all that being said and they pulled
- 6:16away, but you mentioned middle of the third quarter, Peoples
- 6:19are up 4 right there. Conley had a little bit of a
- 6:21run. They started off the game well,
- 6:23even not shooting it well. Divincenzo, Naz.
- 6:26Reed, Alexander Walker. They were no shows.
- 6:29None. Couldn't make baskets save their
- 6:31life. What were they combined 7 for
- 6:3536, seven for 36? How about this one?
- 6:39Alexander Walker, Nas Reed and Divincenzo open 3 pointers, 4 of
- 6:4424. Now.
- 6:46Open 3 pointers. Including a bunch of offers from
- 6:49Nas Reed. As a team, the Timberwolves on
- 6:51Open, which is considered 4 feet of space or more, 11 of 39
- 6:56normally, and especially for a team like the Timberwolves, has
- 6:59a pretty good shooting team. Yeah, they are.
- 7:00You're expecting about 42%. They're 11 to 39.
- 7:03On the other side, OKC and Open 3 pointers 10 of 16, so they're
- 7:08shooting over their mark. Timberwolves well on.
- 7:10So you're saying that this series is far from over?
- 7:14I think so. I hope so.
- 7:16I you're not going to get that kind of first half performance
- 7:19from Randolph very often. And when he's stepping into 30
- 7:22footers, I throw it about 80 feet in the air.
- 7:25That was he free. Good God, you're not going to
- 7:28get that often. But Edwards?
- 7:31Was off. You need him to be 283032 points
- 7:36for this team to win. But you not only need him to
- 7:39score, you need him to be an A hole.
- 7:43You need him to carry himself with that swagger, that
- 7:46toughness, that that attitude. That was missing last night,
- 7:50wasn't it? It.
- 7:50Wasn't there? Yeah.
- 7:51It's a good point. I and here's what I went back to
- 7:56the T for tossing the ball. I think that was he was playing,
- 8:02he didn't have the same edge because he already had that
- 8:04technical against him. And when you take that edge
- 8:06away, he's incredibly talented guy.
- 8:10But you take that edge away, it takes away what it is when you
- 8:13miss that part. And I think you missed that
- 8:14after the technical fall Fair. And then he also had to go to
- 8:17the locker room. Yeah, Fairpoint, which it sounds
- 8:20like he's fine. It's a couple miles to get back
- 8:22to the locker room and get. Apparently, yeah, a good.
- 8:24Point Doris was talking about that one last night, yeah.
- 8:26No, and and apparently he's fine, so we'll see where it
- 8:29goes. But I I don't want to believe
- 8:31that the series is over. But OK, C looks as really good.
- 8:34Really, really good. But don't play like that.
- 8:37You don't have to play like that.
- 8:38Go back to last series though, when they were really good they
- 8:41were worlds better than Denver, but when they just brought their
- 8:44B minus game they were very beatable.
- 8:47Denver beat them three times and I guess that's maybe where also
- 8:51some of my. Entire Denver team beat them
- 8:53three times. Caruso was on that team.
- 8:56Thank you baseball Benny, that came back to beat you and I.
- 9:00All right, The hockey from last night game one in the Eastern
- 9:02Conference final wasn't much of A game.
- 9:04You know, it's crazy running the narratives for both winter
- 9:07sports that are still playing their conference.
- 9:10Boy, I don't know if I can take Oklahoma City.
- 9:12They just played Sunday. T Wolves have rested.
- 9:15There's no way that the Florida's going to win.
- 9:18They played a game seven in Toronto short term, both won
- 9:21both won and Florida just looks like you know, I said yesterday,
- 9:25I I have no idea who's of of the four teams.
- 9:28You can put them in a hat and whoever I pull, I would be happy
- 9:30with 'cause I'm not sure if I had a real strong opinion.
- 9:33This Florida team, they're just bigger.
- 9:35They took Carolinas credit. They came out and tried to out
- 9:39Panther, the Panthers. They hit everything insight, but
- 9:43that seemed to wore down a little bit and Florida got
- 9:46going. They just got so much depth that
- 9:50it looks as though, not saying that they're going to sweep them
- 9:53or knock them out early in the in the in this round, but they
- 9:57just look like they're the best team.
- 9:59The. First goal of these two.
- 10:01The first goal was on a power play.
- 10:02The second one though, this guy in front of the net just flipped
- 10:05it over at the top. Picked a corner?
- 10:07Anderson, we talked about he. Didn't get a ton of help but he
- 10:10did. There was a couple you're right,
- 10:12you would want back. That that second one I thought
- 10:14was you can't allow that guy there, right?
- 10:17Move him out in front of the net. 4/4 feet in front of you
- 10:19and he just flips it over your shoulder.
- 10:21But Anderson for as good as he had been.
- 10:24But if you said that, you kind of get that from him from time
- 10:27to time. Yeah, he's hot and cold.
- 10:28I mean, all, all of the goalies, to be honest with maybe with the
- 10:31exception of Abrovsky, they're kind of they've kind of gone
- 10:34through their ups and downs. I mean, Ottinger, Mike Pom can't
- 10:37stand them. Thinks he's a fraud, really.
- 10:39He does. He he won't bet the stars
- 10:41because he can't trust Ottinger. Ottinger's been good.
- 10:43He'll have to be good tonight because here comes the Edmonton
- 10:46Oilers to take them on. So we'll see how that goes.
- 10:49All right, we'll, we'll switch gears.
- 10:51You want to bounce around a lot of ground to cover.
- 10:53You know what I want to spend a minute on at some point?
- 10:57Iowa State scheduling these exhibition games.
- 11:00I love it. I think it's great.
- 11:02I don't know if this is part and parcel to the, you know, a
- 11:07revenue generator because I mean, everybody's trying to find
- 11:11a way to, you know, put more, put more bottom line together.
- 11:16And that's what we're seeing. But I love the fact that they're
- 11:18going to Creighton and Creighton's coming back to Ames
- 11:20next year. Then we see Northwestern,
- 11:22they're coming to Ames this year and TJ will take his team to
- 11:26Illinois or to Northwestern next year to play.
- 11:29I love that. I think it's great.
- 11:30It's going to be part of the season ticket package.
- 11:32So season ticket holders, you'll have no choice.
- 11:35It's meaningless in the standings, but why not, you
- 11:38know, in a way to, you know, come up with some.
- 11:41I don't know how much a home game means as far as to the
- 11:44bottom line, but it has to be something.
- 11:47Well, and where this money can go, what you can do with these
- 11:51exhibition games, is this something where you can create
- 11:53extra money out of it, You know, do something different because
- 11:57when these games are going to be played, it's going to be warm,
- 12:00it's going to be nice. Can you create a tailgate event?
- 12:03You know, we've seen what Drake does downtown here.
- 12:06I know Iowa does something over in Iowa City, very similar where
- 12:09you get the community involved. Well, can you do something like
- 12:11that before this exhibition where brilliant.
- 12:13You can't tailgate for football, but you can when you're doing
- 12:16these exhibitions in October, right?
- 12:18Of course. You're not.
- 12:19You're not doing it in January, right?
- 12:22Kids coming down big. Monday and we know how Cyclone
- 12:24fans love their tailgates. Well, a lot of fan bases,
- 12:27absolutely, but this would be this would be a pretty good
- 12:29opportunity. All right, let's clear out the
- 12:30phones. Mike and Waterloo, you're next.
- 12:33Let's get to Joe. First of all, Joe, thanks for
- 12:35being patient. How are you?
- 12:37Absolutely. Always be patient for you guys.
- 12:39Hey, being a Thunder fan, I'd like to weigh into the anomaly.
- 12:43That's Shay Gill. Just Alexander.
- 12:45Yes, it yes. It drives me nuts and I'll tell
- 12:48you why. I'll tell you why, because this
- 12:50is new within. We lost you.
- 12:55Go ahead, Joe. We lost you momentarily.
- 12:57So that's OK. I'm sorry.
- 12:58He didn't. He didn't do this a year ago,
- 13:00two years ago when he was finishing second and third to
- 13:02the MVP. The thing is, is that, and I'm
- 13:05going to piggyback off what you guys said, he doesn't need to do
- 13:08it because there's a stat out there that that shows if you
- 13:11take away every single free throw, he still leads the league
- 13:15in scoring. Wow, jeez.
- 13:18So, so So what does that tell you?
- 13:19You don't need to do it. And The thing is, in his game,
- 13:22he's below average from Moneyball land.
- 13:24So he's a dicer, he's a dasher. You're going to get fouls
- 13:27regardless you don't have. To create them, yeah, Fairpoint,
- 13:31really good. You'll go ahead and all that.
- 13:33He's not even that good of a free throw shooter.
- 13:36Because he's like 77% something like that.
- 13:38Is he? Yeah, yeah.
- 13:39It's just he exit, he take away his free throws, that he leads a
- 13:42league in scoring. He doesn't need to do it.
- 13:44Do you think that this series, you know, that the last night
- 13:47was an indicator? Do you expect a long series,
- 13:49Joe? Well, they're going to need more
- 13:51than 0 points out of hand out of the fourth quarter.
- 13:54Yeah, true. I mean, when you got guys like
- 13:56Cason Wallace, Isaiah Joe, Andrew Wiggins that can start on
- 13:59pretty much any other team in the NBA, it's trouble.
- 14:02Yeah, and and watching Caruso and watching Martin Stein.
- 14:07And the Thunder hits you in waves.
- 14:09Yes they do. I mean, I hate to make the, I
- 14:12hate to make the comparison, but it's like Omaha Beach wave after
- 14:15wave after wave. You think you have.
- 14:17You think you have a minute. You think you have a breather.
- 14:19Nope. Here comes the next line.
- 14:20Oh, wait a minute. Jalen Williams is somehow in
- 14:22this next line? How does that work?
- 14:24Yeah. Good stuff, Joe, Thanks for the
- 14:26call. Appreciate it.
- 14:26Enjoy your series. Talk to you again hopefully as
- 14:29we continue on here with these playoffs.
- 14:32Mike's in Waterloo. Mike, how are you?
- 14:36Hey, you guys, how you doing? You know, Minnesota, they got to
- 14:39get tougher. I'll tell you, they want
- 14:41Oklahoma City to win. I've never seen a team that
- 14:44hacks on every play and they don't call it.
- 14:47I mean, it's terrible brand of basketball.
- 14:50You remember that how they play Joker, that one guy was.
- 14:54Gruesome. Taking his legs away from him
- 14:56the whole game, It was unbelievable.
- 14:59They're they're not blowing the whistle.
- 15:01And another thing, Can you believe 2 Iowa State players X
- 15:05players or make their contracts are a half a billion dollars
- 15:10they could fund the whole Iowa State athletic department, you
- 15:15know. What now, Mike?
- 15:17What are you doing with hanging out with us today instead of
- 15:20being at the Cyclone Tailgate tour?
- 15:21They're in Waterloo today, are they?
- 15:23Thinking about going down, but you know what, it's going to be
- 15:27such a big crowd. I don't know.
- 15:29It's only going to last for an hour.
- 15:31But hey, what do you think about football?
- 15:33What do you think they're going to do in football this year?
- 15:35You guys? What do you predict?
- 15:37Three and nine, nine wins? What do you guys say?
- 15:39I got, I got them 3 and 9, two and 10, 2 and 10.
- 15:43Just kidding you. No, it's giving you a hard time.
- 15:45Giving you a hard time. I think they're going to be in
- 15:47contention. I think it's the the conference.
- 15:49It's like last year. It's a story of parody.
- 15:51There's a couple of teams. A better quarterback?
- 15:53College quarterback Purdy or a A Breck right now?
- 15:57Purdy, Purdy, Purdy, Purdy. Not even close.
- 16:00Yeah. In college.
- 16:01Yes. You know what though?
- 16:03When when the things got tough, Purdy would also an interception
- 16:07or fumble. Got benched against.
- 16:08Drake, his backlash? You benched to get Iowa lasted
- 16:11last game. Yeah, look.
- 16:13It's has not been benched as much as Purdy has.
- 16:15Yeah, and because they're. Both really good quarterbacks,
- 16:17Mike, they really are. No, they're.
- 16:18Great quarterbacks. I, I mean, I just, hey, what do
- 16:21you think of Halliburton? You think he's?
- 16:23You know what I think? Yeah.
- 16:26God let you go, Mike, Appreciate the call.
- 16:27Answer. Take care.
- 16:28Yeah, I'll, I'll say this about Halliburton.
- 16:30I think he's he's got a huge opportunity here to change the
- 16:32narrative. He's on a massive stage.
- 16:34Yes. He's Madison Square Garden
- 16:36against the Knicks. This could be.
- 16:39I get it, He's in the NBA, most people know about him.
- 16:41But if you're kind of one of those fringe fans you've been
- 16:43reading about, the overrated guy that plays on the Indiana for
- 16:46whatever reason, this is an opportunity to really, you know,
- 16:50introduce yourself to this, in some cases to the sports fans
- 16:54out. There, yeah, there'll be plenty
- 16:55of people that'll be not seeing him for the first time, but
- 16:58really diving. Right.
- 17:00And watching his game, I mean, who watches the Pacers, right?
- 17:03Right. Casual sports.
- 17:05Fans, that's not at the top of your To Do List.
- 17:08I got to catch a Pacers game, right?
- 17:10Because you look at the roster, you look at the T, but all of a
- 17:12sudden Tyrese has a series that he's certainly capable of.
- 17:16They got to be tough, too. We talk about toughness.
- 17:18It's going to come down to me, pace.
- 17:21Who controls the pace in all these games?
- 17:23Indiana wants to get out and run all game long.
- 17:25And against the Thibodeau team, boy, that seems difficult to
- 17:29accomplish. Although do you have a Do you
- 17:31have an opinion on this game or on this series?
- 17:35I like the pace, so do I. I wanted to get a better price
- 17:39than I did. What did you get?
- 17:40Plus 140. That's it.
- 17:42That was it. That was I was hoping that's.
- 17:45The number tonight, 4 1/2 five. Something like that, yeah.
- 17:48I thought it would be higher than that, Trent.
- 17:50I thought it'd be a push in 280 or 221-A buck $82 somewhere in
- 17:54there. That's what I anticipated when I
- 17:56first opened up the app, when it was and it wasn't.
- 17:58Close to that, I know you shopped around.
- 18:00Yeah. And it just not going to get
- 18:02that price. So maybe you should have gone
- 18:05back to us overthinking things last night with the Fever and
- 18:09their game against the Dream. Well, let's go there because I
- 18:11watched a ton of it. I mean, I can't.
- 18:13Believe it, I think the kids every time I flip it back to the
- 18:16T Wolves game. No, back to Caitlin.
- 18:19My wife's same way. Isn't that crazy though?
- 18:23It's crazy on that. My parents, no, hey, what are
- 18:27you doing tonight? We're at home Fever playing.
- 18:30I mean, both of us. That's that's what they look
- 18:32forward to now in their retirement.
- 18:34Is this their first year retiring?
- 18:35That's what they talk about more than anything sports wise.
- 18:37Is that right? Is when Caitlin's playing that
- 18:39exhibition game not the one against the Brazilian the day
- 18:42before they were back in our? House, she wasn't playing.
- 18:44Yeah, I guess she didn't play. Yeah, get the game on.
- 18:47What? Yeah, exhibition game.
- 18:49Why? Why is she in down in the ball?
- 18:52I mean, I get why. I get on one hand why she is
- 18:54because she's smarter than the rest of her teammates.
- 18:56She sees the floor better than the rest of her teammates.
- 18:59So if you know, the rest of her teammates would tell you this.
- 19:01You look at the beginning of that play they were doing is
- 19:04going to come in off the screen to the right wing there she was
- 19:07going to come back and get on the flip back, moving back to
- 19:11her left. And we know she is a tremendous,
- 19:13she's a better shooter going to her left.
- 19:15That was the thought press behind it and be there was 9
- 19:17seconds on the clock, right? If there's 345 seconds, yeah,
- 19:20you can't do it. I can't kill Stephanie White
- 19:23like a lot of. People should she have called a
- 19:24time out because the first play was not?
- 19:27There, did they have a time out left?
- 19:28Apparently they did. They did.
- 19:30OK, I was trying to remember if they'd use that time out to
- 19:32advance if that was their final one.
- 19:35I didn't hate it. I hated the past from Caitlin.
- 19:38That's an equal. She didn't have a, she didn't
- 19:39have a ton of options. Though it that's true, but that
- 19:42is such a difficult just to get that catch on the other side of
- 19:45the rim. We see this play a lot and if
- 19:48you watch NBA basketball, this is something where they go that
- 19:50cross court. It isn't you're talk about
- 19:52threading the needle. Course, she can make that pass,
- 19:55but then even the catch is tough.
- 19:58I didn't hate it as much as a lot of people did it just the
- 20:01play got blown up. So going back to the point, if
- 20:03you had a time out, yeah, should have.
- 20:04Definitely. I think she should have because
- 20:06that wasn't there. And if that obviously, I believe
- 20:10this wholeheartedly. I mean, and I'm not sure
- 20:12Christie sides wants the ball back in Caitlin's hand.
- 20:15Stephanie White knows the game, right?
- 20:17She does. And maybe that's unfair to to
- 20:19coach Sides, but. It's not.
- 20:22She was terrible. She was.
- 20:23She seemed like she was a little bit over the tips of her skis.
- 20:26But Caitlin Clark needs to take that shot.
- 20:29She kept him in the game early on but did the other.
- 20:33This is going to be the next step we know offensively and the
- 20:36the next record, if you will, where she had 25 points and 10
- 20:40assists in a game. She breaks it.
- 20:43The all time record, yeah. So in her 42nd game or 44th
- 20:46game? It'll be a 43rd and the record
- 20:48holder, the person she's tied with, now has that record in 470
- 20:52something games. Something like that.
- 20:53And Caitlin's going to break it in her game 43 or Game 44.
- 20:57But did you see right away when Atlanta, they were hunting her
- 21:01every single offensive series? As she will be all season.
- 21:05She has to be better and. How many turnovers did she
- 21:08finish with yesterday? Only three, Only three on the
- 21:13defensive end. She is going to be haunted on
- 21:15every single switch, every single screen role.
- 21:18They're going to go after her. We know she's not a great
- 21:22defender, right? But she has to be better than
- 21:24she is. If this team truly is going to
- 21:26be a team that can win a championship, she has to be
- 21:29better on that end of the floor. I was impressed by Atlanta
- 21:32watching them, especially that that Jones gal early in the
- 21:35game. I mean she was unstoppable of.
- 21:38Course Griner. Yeah, I mean, how do you?
- 21:40I mean, she's 6-8. She gets the ball down low.
- 21:42That's automatic, right? Even Bonner looks small up next
- 21:47to her. She does, Yeah.
- 21:48Caitlin has some help. Mitchell was Mitchell and Boston
- 21:51was Boston. The big three from last year did
- 21:53their thing, but they got the ball to Natasha Howard at the
- 21:56end of the game and she just couldn't make either one of
- 21:58them. Person was blocked.
- 21:59Do you know what kind of difference Sophie Cunningham's
- 22:01gonna make when she's out there? Great question.
- 22:03I don't know enough about her. The same way.
- 22:05Yeah, I don't know enough about her.
- 22:07I know that. Pretty versatile.
- 22:09She is and apparently she's, you know, if there is a little set
- 22:13to, she's going to be in the middle of it, which is good A.
- 22:16Little more toughness. Yep, absolutely.
- 22:18All right, we're going to talk to David Eichelt more on the
- 22:20Fever. What's it like to head to a game
- 22:22there? Game day?
- 22:23I mean, people get in there. Do you see the crowd when they
- 22:25arriving on Saturday? My God, it's game one.

- 23:49can't get enough Taylor Swift as we continue to do a leap.
- 23:52I know I didn't know who it was, but I knew it wasn't Taylor
- 23:55Swift. I just didn't say it was either.
- 23:57I said I can't get enough Taylor.
- 23:58It's like Colt's crush. That's right.
- 24:01Now I remember. You've seen that before.
- 24:02Let's get him in here. Is he as Dua Lupus?
- 24:05Is that her last name? Dua Lipa.
- 24:06Dua Lipa Serenades. Nailed it.
- 24:09Hello. David Eichold.
- 24:10How are you? What's going on, guys?
- 24:13Good to be joining you again. Yeah, I was going to say Taylor
- 24:15Swift, man. I mean, the morning show is Sean
- 24:17Roberts. I I said that Taylor Swift's
- 24:20vinyls make for great burning material, and I said Portillo's
- 24:23is overrated. Oh geez, yeah, you tried to pick
- 24:27a fight with him. I had a very passionate caller,
- 24:30RJ from Ames, and he basically put me in my place for like 3
- 24:33minutes and told me to have a horrible day.
- 24:35So we're we're off and running guys.
- 24:37Absolutely. Hey, by the way, before we get
- 24:39into this, just Hard Knocks just announced they will.
- 24:42The August edition of Hard Knocks will be the Buffalo
- 24:45Bills, which until this year, if you were a playoff team last
- 24:49year, you were ineligible to be forced because that's what's
- 24:53happened or happens rather. The NFL tells you you're in hard
- 24:56knock. So it's the Buffalo Bills.
- 24:58Anyways, a lot of ground to cover.
- 24:59I want to start with your weekend, though.
- 25:01If you would allow us, David, I want to go back to your time in
- 25:04Indiana. I saw some of your tweets, saw
- 25:06some of your photos, etcetera from from Indianapolis.
- 25:11I guess I'm blown away game one and just the scene around the
- 25:16the arena in advance of the game taking place.
- 25:19It kind of really is an event, isn't it?
- 25:23No, it really is. I mean, Indianapolis is such a
- 25:25perfect setup though, too. I think they do a really good
- 25:27job. There's so many things to do
- 25:29just outside of it and it's all really close together because if
- 25:32people have not been to Indianapolis, Lucas Oil Stadium
- 25:35where the Colts play is about .4 miles away from Gainsbridge
- 25:37Field House. So again, it's all central
- 25:41located. But the incredible part was this
- 25:43too. You think about the Indiana
- 25:44Pacers are in the Eastern Conference finals, right?
- 25:47You go into their official team store, 80% of the stuff is Fever
- 25:52and they put all the Pacer stuff in the corner.
- 25:56And I don't think that's a one day thing.
- 25:59And it was really kind of incredible to see the movement
- 26:01there. And then obviously, I'm not sure
- 26:03you saw the Dave Portnoy tweet of the day of the game.
- 26:06I mean, guys, they were lined up two hours before the store
- 26:08opened just to try to get some merch.
- 26:10It it was a really fun event. And, and I've told people
- 26:13there's a big reason why I went. I kind of botched last year's
- 26:16Mother's Day and and my mom's birthday so close together.
- 26:20So that was that one of my favorite watering holes.
- 26:23And I saw the tickets and I'm like, all right, well, I kind of
- 26:25owe her. So I ended up being a really,
- 26:27really good trip. But no, man, and you're exactly
- 26:29right, it's a total event there. The atmosphere is awesome.
- 26:33It was great weather, and there's really very few bad
- 26:36seats in that arena too. And I think that makes it even
- 26:38better because that's not the case with some NBA arenas.
- 26:41Yeah, that's what I've continually heard when the Big
- 26:4310 tournaments there, as it is often is, is people just talk
- 26:47about the aesthetic of actual basketball.
- 26:50There's not a basketball arena better built than what they did
- 26:52there at Gainbridge and how good it was.
- 26:54So what does make a difference? I mean, you've obviously been in
- 26:57a ton of basketball buildings now throughout the year years.
- 26:59What does make that building so good for hoops?
- 27:03I mean, I just think it's the, the, it's almost like, like you
- 27:07say, it's almost like a theater, right?
- 27:08I mean, again, there's such good seats.
- 27:11And I think the way the arena just allows everybody to be
- 27:14engaged, right? Because you think about even as
- 27:17simple as getting to your seat, walking around the arena, it
- 27:20doesn't take you an hour to get around it.
- 27:22Like just the whole aesthetic of it all.
- 27:24And I also think just the stardom power.
- 27:26I mean, you think about what Tyrese Halliburton's done with
- 27:28the Pacers and, and the exciting brand of basketball that they
- 27:31play. And then of course, Caitlin
- 27:32Clark with the Fever. I just think the aesthetic, the
- 27:36history, and quite honestly, just the state of Indiana as a
- 27:39whole, because I mean, we've talked about this too.
- 27:41I equate Indiana high school basketball to Texas high school
- 27:44football. That is the event at Indiana for
- 27:49people just of all ages. So it was just a really fun
- 27:53event. I think that they do a
- 27:54tremendous job, the stardom and just the aesthetic in general.
- 27:58I mean, even if something as simple as the PA announcers and
- 28:00the way they kind of engage with the fans, like it was very
- 28:04strange for me because I cannot tell you the last time I've been
- 28:07to a game as a fan. So I kind of lost what it's like
- 28:10because you know, if you go cover games, you're announcing,
- 28:13you're so locked into work. And this is the first time where
- 28:16I could really kind of take it all in and kind of embrace it
- 28:19and kind of understand what it's like to be a fan again just
- 28:22because it's been so long. I mean it's probably been pre
- 28:24COVID guys since I've really been to a game as a fan.
- 28:27You know, and one of the things I appreciate we'll get to the
- 28:29Hawks in just a second is the the appreciation.
- 28:33Sure, Caitlin Clark there, she's going to get the loudest round
- 28:35of applause when she's introduced etcetera.
- 28:38But it's more than that. I mean, they seemingly the fan
- 28:41base loves Kelsey Mitchell and Alea Boston and and Alexi Hull
- 28:45and the recognition. It's obviously a very in tune
- 28:49fan base when Dewana Bonner was about to take her place.
- 28:52It's what, third in the all time scoring.
- 28:55So it seems to me from just watching on TV that that's it's
- 28:59just more than Caitlin Clark. Sure, she's the ringleader, but
- 29:02the fan base appreciate it's the team as well.
- 29:05I mean, it's very. Similar culture like Iowa
- 29:07women's basketball, right? And it's kind of what we said
- 29:09all along. The name gets the attention, The
- 29:12personnel keeps you around, right?
- 29:15You're going to draw eyes. I mean, that's what the WNBA is
- 29:17kind of hoping for, right? You get Caitlin Clark to kind of
- 29:20watch people watch the league. And then whenever she's done or
- 29:22she's gone, the new stars that were around her are going to be
- 29:26embraced. I mean, look at Kate Martin's
- 29:27popularity, right? I mean, look what she's look at
- 29:30Gabby Marshall. She walked back into Carver
- 29:32Hawkeye Arena for Kate Caitlin's exhibition game.
- 29:35There was no announcement. They were giving her a standing
- 29:37ovation once they saw her get to her seat.
- 29:40Like it's it's very similar, I think to the Indiana Fever.
- 29:43And I think it was really cool what the Fever did too.
- 29:45Now, again, I don't know if it's like this everywhere.
- 29:47You know how they always do the starting line UPS guys, they
- 29:50announced every member of the coaching staff.
- 29:52They announced every single reserve before the game.
- 29:55And they were running out one by one out of the tunnel and giving
- 29:58everybody their moment. I think that was kind of the big
- 30:00Oh my gosh thing for, you know, Sophie Cunningham, she didn't
- 30:03play. She still got run out of the
- 30:04tunnel. Dewana Bonner, you can see just
- 30:06her face light up. And I think for her, you think
- 30:08about all the great things she's accomplished, one of the best
- 30:10players in WNBA history. I think it was kind of I'm
- 30:14finally being appreciate. And I think, you know, obviously
- 30:17Caitlin Clarke's drawing the eyes.
- 30:19But now I think a lot more people get to learn about Dewana
- 30:21Bonner. And she even said it post game.
- 30:23She said, Now I'm not saying I, I deserve it, but it's really,
- 30:26really nice to kind of see the work that I put in be
- 30:29appreciate. So it it's just a very unique
- 30:33set of circumstances, I think. And again, I really don't know
- 30:35when we'll ever see this again. And honestly, we might not ever
- 30:39see it again. To the here now on the woman's
- 30:42basketball program and maybe a head scratching news tonight.
- 30:46Davis former player was there as an assistant coach though down
- 30:50director of player personnel and player development and that
- 30:53means not a full time staff member in terms of the pay that
- 30:56the regular assistance get. Can you lead us down?
- 30:59Why the decision because as far as I know she has not been
- 31:03announced as a head or as an assistant coach anywhere.
- 31:06Why Davis is leaving? Yeah, I think that's one of the
- 31:09Morehead scratching things throughout the offseason.
- 31:11I mean, honestly, I thought when Raina Harmon was going to
- 31:14Florida Gulf Coast, I thought Tenaya Davis was going to follow
- 31:17her. But again, she's still
- 31:18relatively young in the coaching circles.
- 31:20But it's interesting too, because Raina Harmon end up
- 31:22hiring former Iowa women's basketball manager Will
- 31:25McIntyre, and I believe he's only 25 years old and he's going
- 31:28to go be an assistant under Harmon.
- 31:30But, you know, I think for tonight she's kind of been
- 31:31around a little bit and gotten some coaching experience
- 31:34elsewhere. I just think it's a part of the
- 31:35grind. I mean, she could stay in Iowa,
- 31:37continue to do what she's is doing, but you look at the staff
- 31:40right now, I don't know when she'd be able to be elevated.
- 31:42I mean, maybe she kind of is taking a chance on herself and
- 31:45and deciding to go a separate ways to try to get an assistant
- 31:48coaching role at D1 somewhere at this point in her career, maybe
- 31:51she feels like she's ready to kind of take on that
- 31:53responsibility because as as great as it was to have her
- 31:56here, as much as I know she loved being in Iowa, I do think
- 32:00that she's kind of looking to take that next step.
- 32:02And I think when you kind of look at the continuity within
- 32:04the Iowa women's basketball coaching staff, and I mean,
- 32:08what's the upside for her, right?
- 32:10I mean, she's obviously going to have a stable job, but we know
- 32:12how this coaching businesses and I've kind of said it for the
- 32:14last couple years, I'm very surprised Iowa held on to Reyna
- 32:17Harmon as long as they did. And you know, she's probably
- 32:19been approached a handful of times.
- 32:22And then you look at Jan Jensen, I mean, how many programs would
- 32:25be able to hold on to Jan Jensen for 20 plus years and then take
- 32:28over that job, right? And we know for a fact that she
- 32:31was offered numerous power for gigs and and she ended up just
- 32:34kind of waiting out at Iowa is now is getting her chance.
- 32:36So I think for Tenaya, I, I do think it's just strictly a
- 32:39career move. I don't think that there's any,
- 32:42you know, ill will or I hate to use a Taylor Swift song, bad
- 32:45blood parties. I just.
- 32:48That's your style. Do it, man.
- 32:52Can't do. I know.
- 32:53Trust me, I was, I debate on saying that.
- 32:56But yeah, just to kind of wrap it up, I do think that it was no
- 32:59bad blood. I just think she's looking to
- 33:00take that next step, man. And and honestly, I can't blame
- 33:03her because we know this coaching thing.
- 33:04It's it can be a really, really brutal grind.
- 33:09Jan Jensen seemingly doing pretty well in the recording
- 33:11portal. Rodriguez comes from UCF and I
- 33:14know Chad Lyskow just posted a piece of Layla Haye.
- 33:18She's 6 foot 5 tallest Hawkeye in 12 plus years.
- 33:21I guess I would have thought that that wouldn't be the case.
- 33:23What? What do you know about her?
- 33:25She's really good, man. I mean, I think she is a big
- 33:28just physical post. She can block shot.
- 33:31She runs the floor very well. I do think that her mid range is
- 33:34going to need to be added. I think she'll need to add a
- 33:36couple more post moves. But if it wasn't glaringly
- 33:39obvious in the two national title losses, I would need more
- 33:42size, man. I mean, you look at specifically
- 33:44Caitlin Clark senior year and it's great.
- 33:47She was membership, I think 18 points the end of the first
- 33:49quarter. But Iowa was just kind of, they
- 33:52were outside and there was no offense to Hannah Stolky, who
- 33:55gave everything she had. She's still an undersized time,
- 33:58right? I mean, 6 foot 2 going up
- 33:59against numerous 6 foot 66 foot 7 girls, it it's really, really
- 34:03tough unless you're going to shoot the ball 60% from three
- 34:06and then you keep them off the the glass or at least limit
- 34:08opportunities. So, yeah, Layla Hayes, I think
- 34:11I, I do think show me a little bit of development, but I also
- 34:13think you look at, you know, Hannah Stalky, you have Ava
- 34:16Hayen, who I thinks could be the breakout player in the Big 10
- 34:18this year. You know, not really a hot take
- 34:20there, right? But I do love the, the, the
- 34:23potential of, you know, high, low combination with Hayes and
- 34:26Ava Hayen. You just look at the size, like
- 34:28Ava Hayen has a really nice jump shot.
- 34:30Layla Hayes can run the floor well and she's very confident.
- 34:33I do think that there'll be a little bit of an adjustment
- 34:35because I mean, keep in mind, they're getting her straight out
- 34:37of Alaska. And with all the respect to, you
- 34:40know, any Alaskan friends of mine or people listening, I
- 34:43don't think that's necessarily a women's basketball high school
- 34:46powerhouse. And turns out, do you want
- 34:48talent at a frequent basis? So I do think there'll be a
- 34:51little bit of an adjustment for her just from the talent.
- 34:53Yeah. But the pieces are there.
- 34:55And if you're going to trust one coach in America to develop
- 34:57post, Jan Jensen's going to be near the top of that list,
- 35:00without a doubt. So is it fair to say over on the
- 35:03men's side that they're done? And there's the kid from High
- 35:07Point, he visited, nothing happened, talking.
- 35:10Maybe he's asking for more money, money than I was willing.
- 35:12There was the Belgian big guy thought he was going to
- 35:15Virginia. That still hasn't happened.
- 35:17Should we just anticipate? That I I'll tell you what the
- 35:20guy who's going to Virginia, man, I don't know if you've
- 35:21heard this, but I'm I don't know if he's going to be eligible to
- 35:24play. Oh boy.
- 35:25P AA rules. Interesting.
- 35:28So I think. There's something there and also
- 35:30the high point guard too. I do think I put this on my
- 35:32message board. It it's very, it's a very
- 35:34interesting situation because I was told by two sources, like
- 35:37near the end of his visit that he was flat out committing to
- 35:40Iowa. And like you said, I do think
- 35:43that he just tried to kept running up the price.
- 35:45And we've seen a handful of times this offseason where Ben
- 35:48McCollum, where, you know, he feels like he's just being used
- 35:51as a leverage tool. Ben Mccollum's not afraid to
- 35:53say, all right, bye. They're not.
- 35:55He's not going to go back and forth on it.
- 35:57And he trusts himself and his staff to go develop talent and
- 35:59get talent. And again, if the high point
- 36:02guard wants to go out there and get some money, I'm not, you
- 36:04know, all, all free will to him to go out and do that.
- 36:07But I think Ben Mccollum's also thinking long term where he's
- 36:10going to want to spend the money with that feels like it's going
- 36:12to be best for him. And at this point, he doesn't
- 36:14feel like he needs a big guy. He'd like another point guard.
- 36:17I think that they're going to continue monitoring a couple
- 36:20different pieces, but I think it's been abundantly clear, man,
- 36:23they're not going to overpay for somebody.
- 36:25They're not going to pay $2,000,000 for a guy that
- 36:27averages 9 points and eight rebounds.
- 36:29And again, that's what the market dictates.
- 36:31But I'm right there with Ben McCollum.
- 36:33I think it's frankly ridiculous to even think about doing that.
- 36:36David Eichold, hawkeyeinsider.com.
- 36:38He joins us and we appreciate every time you do.
- 36:40Thank you, David. We'll talk to you down the road.
- 36:43Have a great holiday weekend. Hey, thanks guys.
- 36:46I appreciate you. Take care.
- 36:46Yeah. Good to talk to you, David
- 36:48Ickels. We checked in on a number of
- 36:49topics with David, unrelated kind of topic, but Cedar Rapids.
- 36:55So Iowa State had their coaches caravan event there last night.
- 36:59Yeah. Did you see the auditorium that
- 37:01it took place in? No, I didn't.
- 37:03I've never seen it before the pictures it looks spectacular
- 37:07at. Veterans Memorial Building.
- 37:09I don't know. That's why I'm asking you.
- 37:11Is that what it? Is.
- 37:12Well, I I have the list here that you do yeah of the
- 37:15different events that have. You been into that facility
- 37:17ever? I don't.
- 37:19It'll trick, really. Cool.
- 37:20Really. Yeah, I'm.
- 37:21I'm almost positive I have not. I don't know why that it just
- 37:25struck me that I'm I'm surprised that there is such a a facility
- 37:28like that there kind of got the balcony.
- 37:30Well, now we have to remind our statewide audience that Ken
- 37:34Ankeny and. Downtown Des Moines and that's.
- 37:37About it, yeah, There's not a whole lot of travel.
- 37:40Cedar Rapids, you know, that's another city.
- 37:42We have multiple cities here. Yes, I'm aware of that.
- 37:44Yes, I think we're on in Cedar Rapids.
- 37:46We are in and we're grateful for.
- 37:47That are the FM signal there 95.7 hello to you I just.
- 37:51Was just blown away by what's a real city over there.
- 37:54Yeah. But it looks like it's kind of
- 37:56got some some age to it and I appreciate that.
- 37:59Some care, too. Yes, yes.
- 38:02And it's called What Veterans. Veterans Memorial Building
- 38:05Coliseum. I'm going to look it up during
- 38:07the break. Miller and Condon will come back
- 38:09after the break. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 38:12Network. All right, Miller and Condon,
- 38:15welcome back. Iowa Sports Radio Network, take
- 38:18you until 2:00. This just popped up on my
- 38:22Twitter feed. I found it interesting because I
- 38:24thought when Trevor Lawrence came into the NFL that this
- 38:27guy's the next didn't you thought it'd be good, Thought
- 38:31it'd be good. I thought it was going to be a
- 38:32star, so. Maybe it was his hair that
- 38:36always bothered me. Oh see, I like that about him.
- 38:38Oh yuck. Did you have long hair?
- 38:42Yeah, you did. Yeah, I'll find, I'll find.
- 38:45Show you a picture 1 I had a mullet.
- 38:47Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
- 38:48I mean, I had a mullet. So these this is compared.
- 38:52These are 5 statistical comparisons too.
- 38:55Daniel Jones Alright, OK, there are records through 60 games.
- 39:00Trevor Lawrence 22 and 38. Daniel Jones 2237 and one same.
- 39:06Total yards 14898 for Lawrence 14 six O 5 for Daniel Jones.
- 39:13TD Interception ratio 6940660242 Passer rating 85 for Trevor
- 39:20Lawrence, 84.3 for Daniel Jones. Daniel Jones has a higher
- 39:25completion percentage 64 to 63.3.
- 39:29Daniel Jones gets crucified. Trevor Lawrence.
- 39:32We're still thinking there's there's something there.
- 39:34Don't give up on them. Is it as simple as playing in
- 39:37New York as opposed to Jacksonville?
- 39:38There's your answer. Yeah, you're spot on.
- 39:40It's it's got to be a huge component of the discussion.
- 39:44Right, because one of the guys was the number one pick, the
- 39:46other was the number six. Pick.
- 39:48Yeah, I think it was right around there, Right around there
- 39:50out of Duke. You think it should be inverse,
- 39:52right? The number one pick should be
- 39:54the one more maligned and the guy that's already been cut.
- 39:56You know, I think what I'm hearing is I should have been
- 39:59right. The Vikings should have kept
- 40:00him, and Daniel Jones should have been I.
- 40:01Think you. I think you should have been
- 40:03right now. I think they did try to keep
- 40:04him. I think Daniel Jones wanted to
- 40:06go because he thought he could beat out Anthony Richardson.
- 40:09I mean, some of the stuff I'm hearing on on Jay, look, I like
- 40:12him a lot and I think he's going to be good, but tap the brakes.
- 40:16I listened to some cat yesterday say he's going to be better than
- 40:18Elway. I mean, come on, that's a good
- 40:20way to piss you off. Well, there it.
- 40:22Is but always got a couple of Super Bowls.
- 40:25He marched into the Hall of Fame as soon as he's eligible.
- 40:28By any account, he's a top ten quarterback to ever play the
- 40:30game. You know, tap the brakes.
- 40:33He's hasn't thrown a pass in the league yet.
- 40:35Again, I think he's going to be great, but please.
- 40:38Hell away. Yeah, that's all John Elway.
- 40:42All right, Kappy's going to kick things off.
- 40:44Look forward to catching up with Kappy before we do.
- 40:46And I won't ask Kappy this question.
- 40:47Be unfair. And I know.
- 40:49I know you don't know the answer.
- 40:51I'm not sure anybody does. What's going on, Booshabi?
- 40:54You mentioned this a few weeks ago.
- 40:56He misses more games. It's odd, yes.
- 40:58At the very least, it's incredibly.
- 41:00I hear he's sick. That's the, that's the what
- 41:02we're told. Oh, he's sick.
- 41:04Hopefully just has the flu or a cold.
- 41:07But it just continues on. And when he did come back for
- 41:10that series over the weekend, his voice was weaker than
- 41:13normal. Hour 2, Cappy kicks it off.
- 41:15That's next. Iowa Sports Radio Network.
