Latest / FSU Football: Doak Talk / FSU TO STEAL GEORGIA'S TOP ASSISTANT?! Glenn Schumann Could Be Florida State's NEXT Head Coach!
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Next one to discuss is Glenn Shuman, the UGA defensive coordinator.
- 0:05Speaker 1: Let's talk about this one a little bit in the
- 0:06Speaker 1: comment packet. Glenn, in my opinion, is a really good recruiter,
- 0:10Speaker 1: really good recruiter, linebacker developer. You got Raylon Wilson, a
- 0:15Speaker 1: five-star from right here in Tallahassee, Lincoln. Ended up snatching
- 0:18Speaker 1: him from right up under our nose. He's balling for UGA,
- 0:21Speaker 1: and that's just one of the linebackers he recruited, right?
- 0:23Speaker 1: I mean, those guys recruit that position at a very
- 0:26Speaker 1: high clip. Darren gets linebacker drafted every year in the NFL.
- 0:30Speaker 1: I will probably honestly call Georgia linebacker you right now
- 0:34Speaker 1: with how they've been producing. It's been really great since
- 0:38Speaker 1: Kirby has took over. And since Kirby has took over,
- 0:41Speaker 1: Glenn has been the focal point and the driving force
- 0:44Speaker 1: behind the linebacker position. It was also under Nick Saban
- 0:48Speaker 1: at Alabama previously when Kirby Smarks, the defensive coordinator there.
- 0:52Speaker 1: And the first call that Kirby made when he was
- 0:55Speaker 1: named the head coach at Georgia was Glenn Schumann to
- 0:58Speaker 1: come onto his staff. So, That's something to note as well.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Won't be an outrageous buyout, you know, being thrown around,
- 1:05Speaker 1: you know, being a defensive coordinator at University of Georgia.
- 1:08Speaker 1: He also knows what it looks like, right? And I
- 1:10Speaker 1: say he knows what it looks like. He knows what
- 1:13Speaker 1: a winning program looks like. He knows what a elite
- 1:17Speaker 1: program looks like. He knows what it takes, the ingredients,
- 1:23Speaker 1: to build a championship roster today. not just from a
- 1:26Speaker 1: recruiting standpoint, a development standpoint, camaraderie standpoint, all of those things.
- 1:30Speaker 1: You can tie that to his time with saving McCourse's
- 1:34Speaker 1: time with Kirby Smart in Alabama. He has also been
- 1:42Speaker 1: a part of some high stake environments at Bama and UGA.
- 1:45Speaker 1: So we all know the pressure that comes with being
- 1:48Speaker 1: the coach at Florida State, right? That pressure can make
- 1:52Speaker 1: or break you. That pressure kind of broke Willie Taggart.
- 1:55Speaker 1: The moment was kind of too big for Willie Taggart.
- 1:58Speaker 1: You can see at a certain point that pressure broke
- 2:00Speaker 1: Mike Norvell. You're playing these high-stakes games. You have a
- 2:03Speaker 1: fan base that expects greatness, expects wins, and gets down
- 2:08Speaker 1: to 31. That isn't delivered. The fan base is going
- 2:10Speaker 1: to let you know about that. Georgia's the same way.
- 2:14Speaker 1: The same way. High-stakes environment. Those guys are all about winning. Bama,
- 2:21Speaker 1: high-stakes environment. Those guys are all about winning. You lose
- 2:24Speaker 1: one game, you know, you're scrutinized heavily in this time
- 2:27Speaker 1: third because of the program you built. So he's been
- 2:31Speaker 1: a part of high stakes environment, knows what all comes
- 2:33Speaker 1: into it. Now, of course, it's different being a coordinator
- 2:37Speaker 1: in a high stakes environment type of job versus being
- 2:40Speaker 1: a head coach because that's two completely animals. That's something
- 2:44Speaker 1: he would definitely have to adjust with and kind of
- 2:46Speaker 1: learn on the job if he's given that opportunity. But
- 2:50Speaker 1: at the same time, like I said, you've been watching
- 2:51Speaker 1: Kirby Smart and how he handled those situations. You were
- 2:54Speaker 1: under Nick Saban and see how he handles those situations.
- 2:56Speaker 1: So the pedigree is, from a pedigree standpoint, it doesn't
- 2:59Speaker 1: get any better. It's top tier, right? But like I said,
- 3:04Speaker 1: being a head coach is different, but you have comparable experiences.
- 3:09Speaker 1: He has his chops in the South. He knows the
- 3:11Speaker 1: lay of the land, recruits the area. From the Valdosta area,
- 3:15Speaker 1: recruits Florida, Georgia. Pretty much whatever you need within Tallahassee.
- 3:19Speaker 1: I'm talking about my guy, Grimes. He mentioned this all
- 3:21Speaker 1: the time. Everything you need in Tallahassee is within a
- 3:25Speaker 1: 250-mile radius. 250. Go over to Jacksonville. Go west, Pensacola,
- 3:32Speaker 1: Alabama area, Georgia. And, of course, you have the Central
- 3:36Speaker 1: Florida area. Only time you need to go outside that
- 3:39Speaker 1: 250 is if you're going a little further south in
- 3:41Speaker 1: the South Florida. but everything you truly need is within
- 3:44Speaker 1: the two 50 radius. And of course you go down
- 3:46Speaker 1: to South Florida and get, get your dogs down there
- 3:48Speaker 1: from Broward day in Palm beach. Right? So he knows
- 3:53Speaker 1: the little land. He knows that those recruiting areas knows
- 3:56Speaker 1: those stumping grounds already has relationships built in those areas.
- 4:00Speaker 1: So it'd be a seamless transition for them to get in,
- 4:02Speaker 1: recruit and get going at Florida state. Let's talk about
- 4:05Speaker 1: some of the cons first time head coach. That's important.
- 4:10Speaker 1: I mean, We're at Florida State now. We're at a
- 4:13Speaker 1: very important, pivotal, excuse me, I'm not the greatest speaker,
- 4:20Speaker 1: pivotal time for Florida State as far as the program.
- 4:25Speaker 1: We can't mess this up. We can't mess this up.
- 4:27Speaker 1: We already went G5 twice with Willie Tiger, Mike Norvell,
- 4:30Speaker 1: didn't work out. If you mess this one up, you could,
- 4:35Speaker 1: the program could be going, which I don't really believe,
- 4:37Speaker 1: but the program could just be in a a downward
- 4:39Speaker 1: spiral with how things are going from the NCAA standpoint.
- 4:42Speaker 1: So you have to kind of get this right. So
- 4:44Speaker 1: I do understand the pause on the guy that never
- 4:46Speaker 1: actually ran the program. But the closest thing, in my opinion, to,
- 4:51Speaker 1: I guess, running a program, if you're not a G5
- 4:53Speaker 1: head coach, and even not being a G5 head coach,
- 4:56Speaker 1: being a coordinator at these type of jobs, right, these
- 5:01Speaker 1: type of jobs, I think there's value in that as well.
- 5:06Speaker 1: So being a coordinator in these type of jobs, Georgia,
- 5:09Speaker 1: just use Georgia for example, he fits that Georgia, Florida, LSU, Bama,
- 5:15Speaker 1: these type of jobs, like high-stake jobs where it's not
- 5:17Speaker 1: on the line and you're getting scrutinized very heavily at
- 5:21Speaker 1: those jobs. It's not, of course, nothing compares to actually
- 5:27Speaker 1: being a head coach, but being a coordinator at a
- 5:30Speaker 1: high-stake job does mean something. But again, that's a con,
- 5:33Speaker 1: being a first-time head coach. How much is the defense
- 5:37Speaker 1: really him? He is a D.C., but how much of
- 5:40Speaker 1: that defense is really him? We all know Kirby Smart
- 5:42Speaker 1: is a defensive savant. Going back to his Bama days,
- 5:46Speaker 1: hell of a coordinator. Even at Georgia, early on, he
- 5:50Speaker 1: was kind of co-coordinated at a certain point in time, too.
- 5:53Speaker 1: You also had Mel Tucker, who was defensive coordinator prior
- 5:56Speaker 1: at Georgia. Dan Lanning, Will Muschamp, all coordinators as well.
- 6:01Speaker 1: And now you have Glenn Schumann taking over as the
- 6:04Speaker 1: main play caller. Tucker went to be a head coach
- 6:06Speaker 1: at Michigan State, then Atlanta. Of course, he went to
- 6:08Speaker 1: be the head coach at Oregon. Muschamp is now the
- 6:11Speaker 1: defensive coordinator at the University of Texas. The defensive rankings,
- 6:17Speaker 1: they have taken a dip under Glenn Shulman. They have
- 6:20Speaker 1: dipped to the mid-20s, if I'm not mistaken, versus being
- 6:23Speaker 1: a consensus top 10 under those defensive coordinators and that
- 6:26Speaker 1: type of deal, with recruiting pretty much staying the same. Now,
- 6:31Speaker 1: The recruiting prowess of Georgia hasn't dipped off. They're still
- 6:35Speaker 1: bringing in top five, top ten classes, still prioritizing the trenches,
- 6:39Speaker 1: elite linebacks, that type of deal. Recruiting elite, I guess
- 6:43Speaker 1: you could say probably Ohio State, maybe that's a conversation
- 6:46Speaker 1: who's recruited the defense better over the years. So I
- 6:50Speaker 1: say that to say that your defense hasn't fallen off
- 6:54Speaker 1: from a recruiting standpoint. But your rankings have fallen off.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Those guys are pretty much a lock in the top
- 6:59Speaker 1: 10 to be in the mid-20s. Now, that isn't bad
- 7:01Speaker 1: with today's offenses. It's just something to point out that
- 7:03Speaker 1: the defensive production has dropped under Glenn Shulman when the
- 7:09Speaker 1: recruiting under Curry Smart on the defensive side of the
- 7:12Speaker 1: ball hasn't dropped off at all. They're still getting whoever
- 7:15Speaker 1: they want out of the portal. Not the portal, but
- 7:17Speaker 1: the portal too, I guess, but from the high school ranks.
- 7:19Speaker 1: So that's something to note as well. But again, I
- 7:21Speaker 1: do think Glenn will possibly be a good fit for FSU.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Those are some of the pros and cons on Glenn.
