- 0:03Speaker 1: And she's finally here. OK, as always, you know me,
- 0:06Speaker 1: I love to glaze our guests and give them a show.
- 0:10Speaker 1: So when we talk about the world of acting and
- 0:12Speaker 1: one of our own, I think we can list a
- 0:14Speaker 1: few names. We have Tan Keng Hua, we have Adrian Pang,
- 0:17Speaker 1: we have Eg Chin Han.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Do we claim Henry Golding? We, I guess we do.
- 0:21Speaker 1: We can. Yeah, he's technically, but he grew up here, right?
- 0:24Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know. And for this one, I'm
- 0:25Speaker 1: very proud to say she's one of our own and
- 0:28Speaker 1: she's making waves on West End and even here in
- 0:32Speaker 1: Singapore as well. Say hello to our guest, Natalia.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Um.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Welcome back home. Tell us first thing that you ate
- 0:44Speaker 1: when you stepped back to Singapore.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, I, my brain was so frazzled. I
- 0:49Speaker 2: actually cannot remember.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Oh my God, I know what I wanted to eat,
- 0:54Speaker 2: but I didn't get it. Chataoui.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Oh yeah, why you didn't get chai tai?
- 0:59Speaker 1: It's not up
- 0:59Speaker 2: to
- 0:59Speaker 1: me. Are you a black or a white person for
- 1:01Speaker 1: a carrot cake? Black, Black. There we go. OK, hands down.
- 1:04Speaker 1: I'm what they call a Michael Jackson. Oh, you have
- 1:06Speaker 1: to have both, is it.
- 1:07Speaker 1: OK, so story time. This is actually my third time
- 1:10Speaker 1: meeting Nathaniel Ong in person. I think both of us
- 1:12Speaker 1: are waiting for the story I'm, I'm gonna throw this
- 1:17Speaker 1: back to 2010. YOG Pavan Studios. So I and a
- 1:24Speaker 1: few other performers alongside Nathaniel Ong, we were recording this
- 1:27Speaker 1: closing song. It's by the Beatles. I get by with
- 1:30Speaker 1: help from my friends.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Alright, and she actually had two lines solo and she
- 1:36Speaker 1: just killed it. And outside the studio, you know, like
- 1:39Speaker 1: there's a reflective glass or like a mirror, right? I
- 1:42Speaker 1: see your dad, and, and, and I remember this very,
- 1:45Speaker 1: very vividly. Your dad's like, no, OK, inflect here. No, and, and,
- 1:50Speaker 1: and from then on I was like, Who is this
- 1:52Speaker 1: young girl? And I went on YouTube, loads of performers.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Performances as a child stars and that's why when, when
- 1:59Speaker 1: I first read about you making it a western, I
- 2:01Speaker 1: was like, oh yeah, that's the YOG girl. So my, my,
- 2:05Speaker 1: my very first question is this. Is your dad the
- 2:09Speaker 1: rock behind some of the decisions and some of the
- 2:12Speaker 1: steps in life that you've taken so far, and, and
- 2:14Speaker 1: how supportive has he been? Because I remember him doing
- 2:17Speaker 1: all that for you.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Sorry, backtracking slightly back to this YOG situation, there's actually
- 2:24Speaker 2: a really funny story there as well. So in this
- 2:27Speaker 2: Beatles thing, so you saw me in the recording session, right?
- 2:31Speaker 2: So after I did like the big number, like of
- 2:34Speaker 2: because I sang the, the um national anthem at the
- 2:37Speaker 2: closing ceremony.
- 2:39Speaker 2: And then after that, like no one really told me anything,
- 2:41Speaker 2: I remembered that I that I recorded those two lines,
- 2:43Speaker 2: but I just didn't think anything of it. Also I
- 2:45Speaker 2: was like, 12 and I just was not thinking of registering, yeah,
- 2:49Speaker 2: so I was like, OK, cool, so I left the rehearsal,
- 2:52Speaker 2: and then I didn't realize that they actually like, there
- 2:55Speaker 2: was an entire song that came after that.
- 2:58Speaker 2: That I just wasn't in, even though it was my voice,
- 3:02Speaker 2: and I think it was like two random guys like
- 3:04Speaker 2: walking to my like according to my line and like
- 3:06Speaker 2: lip syncing my line, even though they're obviously guys and
- 3:09Speaker 2: it was like a tiny small female girl voice. Yeah,
- 3:13Speaker 2: so silly silly, but anyway, backtracking back, um.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Yes, my dad is one of my biggest fans and
- 3:20Speaker 2: biggest inspirations. He was one of my first vocal coaches
- 3:23Speaker 2: when I was a young kid, and as you saw
- 3:25Speaker 2: from that story as well, he is very meticulous, and
- 3:28Speaker 2: I feel like that is something that I've really picked
- 3:30Speaker 2: up on um from young and I really carry on
- 3:33Speaker 2: through my daily life now.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Um, he also like, he is just my biggest fan
- 3:40Speaker 2: and I always just feel so supported by him. He's
- 3:43Speaker 2: actually even known now, I think now one of the
- 3:46Speaker 2: current associate directors on Les Miserables because my dad is
- 3:49Speaker 2: also very vocal on the Les Miserable Facebook group,
- 3:53Speaker 1: very
- 3:54Speaker 1: involved,
- 3:55Speaker 2: and so like they recognize his name and they're like, hey,
- 3:57Speaker 2: isn't that the dad.
- 3:59Speaker 2: So yes, that's, that's him.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Do do you feel like, you know, in your journey, um,
- 4:04Speaker 1: there was a bit of that Asian parent situation going
- 4:07Speaker 1: on because I think the way that Asians parent us,
- 4:10Speaker 1: a little bit different from some of my friends who
- 4:13Speaker 1: live overseas, right, or who are not Singaporean or who are,
- 4:16Speaker 1: they're like, wow, your parents, you know, they call it
- 4:18Speaker 1: helicopter parents. I don't know if you know the term,
- 4:20Speaker 1: it's a very Singaporean term. My parents admit that they're
- 4:23Speaker 1: helicopter parents because they like hover over me, they, you know,
- 4:26Speaker 1: make sure that I'm doing this.
- 4:27Speaker 1: That right? Do you feel like that kind of added
- 4:30Speaker 1: a little bit of like that spark for you or
- 4:32Speaker 1: that pressure for you as well at the same time?
- 4:34Speaker 2: Um, I think I fortunately and unfortunately put the pressure
- 4:39Speaker 2: on myself. So it's not like I necessarily needed anyone
- 4:43Speaker 2: else to give me that extra flair, but I think
- 4:45Speaker 2: with my parents, they like it's a bit odd lah,
- 4:49Speaker 2: like they're helicopter parents in some sense, like my mom
- 4:52Speaker 2: is a helicopter parent for like fashion and like she
- 4:55Speaker 2: says I.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Frown too much, so like sometimes if I'm like literally
- 4:58Speaker 2: just in a conversation with her, she'll go, eh, stop frowning,
- 5:00Speaker 2: and then no and then she'll like, she'll reach her
- 5:01Speaker 2: thumb and she'll like smooth out like this
- 5:03Speaker 1: exactly
- 5:06Speaker 1: what my mum does to me as
- 5:07Speaker 1: well,
- 5:08Speaker 2: yeah, and then worse yet, there was one time I
- 5:11Speaker 2: was having like a full conversation with her, I think
- 5:13Speaker 2: because obviously I don't get to see my mum that
- 5:15Speaker 2: often now, so we're on holiday, and like while I'm
- 5:18Speaker 2: like speaking, she just starts like ruffling through her bag
- 5:21Speaker 2: like while I'm speaking, so I was like, are you
- 5:22Speaker 2: even paying attention?
- 5:24Speaker 2: But then she takes out a sticker, sticks it on
- 5:27Speaker 2: my forehead, it's called a frowny, apparently like the wrinkles
- 5:30Speaker 2: are like, yeah, so you just, it just like sits
- 5:32Speaker 2: there and then it just like smooths you and then
- 5:34Speaker 2: you can't move your face. Help me, oh my god,
- 5:36Speaker 2: so my mum in that sense, but my dad is
- 5:38Speaker 2: definitely like, he's more like hands off, like it's like
- 5:41Speaker 2: he's just like lip out, he's just chilling, except for singing,
- 5:46Speaker 2: of course, yeah, but now, now he's more hands off
- 5:48Speaker 2: though obviously because like I've I've I've learned a lot more.
- 5:51Speaker 2: I'm kind of doing my own. You're more mature now.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Yeah,
- 5:53Speaker 1: exactly. And given how you sang the national anthem at
- 5:56Speaker 1: 11 going on 12 at the YOG, not just for
- 5:58Speaker 1: us here in Singapore but all over the world, I mean,
- 6:01Speaker 1: does anything scare you anymore?
- 6:03Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, so much. Really? Yeah, coming back here
- 6:05Speaker 2: was scary.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Why?
- 6:07Speaker 2: Uh, I think it's just like, I obviously like, I
- 6:10Speaker 2: pride myself so much in like being Singaporean and this is,
- 6:14Speaker 2: this is my home as well and so obviously like
- 6:17Speaker 2: and especially with with the role like
- 6:18Speaker 2: This that I really feel changed my life. Uh, I
- 6:22Speaker 2: really just wanted to be a, be able to do
- 6:23Speaker 2: it justice, but also like B, to like, you know,
- 6:27Speaker 2: make the Singaporeans proud like by by bringing it home.
- 6:30Speaker 2: So yeah, I just wanted to make sure that I
- 6:33Speaker 2: did my best and that I could like do, do
- 6:35Speaker 2: the country proud lah.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Take, take us to opening night because, you know, with
- 6:40Speaker 1: such a big show like Les Miserable, right? I think
- 6:43Speaker 1: a lot of people were in attendance for the premiere.
- 6:46Speaker 1: And we're so sorry we couldn't be there, but you know,
- 6:48Speaker 1: we would love to. So what happened was I saw
- 6:51Speaker 1: so many people, local artists, um, you know, just people
- 6:54Speaker 1: that I follow, that posted just videos and pictures of you,
- 6:58Speaker 1: like they didn't even post on themselves, they posted videos
- 7:00Speaker 1: of you.
- 7:01Speaker 1: And they were saying things like, you know what, it
- 7:03Speaker 1: was so refreshing and so wonderful to see Natalia take
- 7:06Speaker 1: the stage, you know, like, welcome home, that kind of thing.
- 7:09Speaker 1: What was running through your mind? Because with any big
- 7:11Speaker 1: sports person, let's say that plays at home or like
- 7:13Speaker 1: on home turf or a performer that comes back to
- 7:15Speaker 1: your hometown, you must be feeling so much nerves at
- 7:18Speaker 1: that point, right? Take us through those moments.
- 7:21Speaker 2: So I actually um when I saw those like I
- 7:25Speaker 2: felt I felt like so many things that I almost
- 7:28Speaker 2: felt like I couldn't really process what was happening. I
- 7:30Speaker 2: also like flew back from China the day before, like
- 7:34Speaker 2: my pickup was 4:20 a.m. and then like I was
- 7:37Speaker 2: on a flight landed and then the next day I
- 7:39Speaker 2: had my dress run and opening, so it's like I
- 7:42Speaker 2: like everything was just moving so quickly, so I felt
- 7:44Speaker 2: like almost like I couldn't really process what was happening.
- 7:47Speaker 2: But then when I saw all of these things, I
- 7:49Speaker 2: think I felt so many things, I felt really privileged
- 7:54Speaker 2: and really blessed that like, you know, people were were
- 7:57Speaker 2: actually like taking notice and that, and that they enjoyed
- 7:59Speaker 2: my performance as well was was really really special for me.
- 8:03Speaker 2: Um, but also I was just like, I was like, oh,
- 8:06Speaker 2: I was like, but I'm not satisfied. I was like
- 8:07Speaker 2: I can still do more because I was also tired
- 8:09Speaker 2: on those first two days. So yeah, so I like
- 8:12Speaker 2: even now I'm still like trying to like up the
- 8:15Speaker 2: performances and like really trying to just keep it as
- 8:17Speaker 2: truthful as I possibly
- 8:18Speaker 2: can
- 8:19Speaker 1: live on TikTok. We have Natalia Ong, of course, star,
- 8:22Speaker 1: I mean star of so many things and of course
- 8:26Speaker 1: she has a stand-alone concert happening very soon. She'll be
- 8:28Speaker 1: part of SRT's legal.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Blonde, but currently playing at the Marina Bay Sands Theater,
- 8:33Speaker 1: we got the Les Mis Arena Spectacular. She plays Eponine.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Fantastic on my own. has been trying to audition the
- 8:41Speaker 1: audacity to sing in front of Nathaniel Ong itself.
- 8:44Speaker 2: No, I welcome it.
- 8:45Speaker 1: I welcome it. You sound amazing.
- 8:47Speaker 1: But, you know, at home and amongst your friends, do
- 8:50Speaker 1: they attempt to like sing your lines or do anything?
- 8:53Speaker 2: You know, ironically, like actually like.
- 8:55Speaker 2: They haven't sung it in front of me, but my sister,
- 8:59Speaker 2: like her, my sister's boyfriend, she's been like taking sneak
- 9:02Speaker 2: recordings of him singing on my own, just like doing
- 9:05Speaker 2: things because he also hadn't really seen Les Miserable before,
- 9:08Speaker 2: so she forced him to watch the movie so he
- 9:10Speaker 2: could like get like some context before he watched, like
- 9:12Speaker 2: me in the actual show, and then, so just before
- 9:16Speaker 2: and just after, it's been nonstop,
- 9:19Speaker 1: the voice notes, the videos, can you imagine,
- 9:22Speaker 1: Natanyia's sister, the sister is Eponine. The boyfriend might be
- 9:25Speaker 1: Marius in the future, a parallel. OK, so, so on
- 9:29Speaker 1: that note of singing and given how all three of
- 9:31Speaker 1: us here, we, we use our voices for a living
- 9:34Speaker 1: and for yours truly, look, I've, I've had many throat issues, nodules, polyps,
- 9:38Speaker 1: and all that. Yeah, honestly, I'm dealing with one right now. How,
- 9:42Speaker 1: how do you take care of your voice, because this
- 9:44Speaker 1: is the moneymaker for you for sure, in a, in
- 9:47Speaker 1: a very affectionate way.
- 9:48Speaker 1: of it, yeah, how do you take care of your
- 9:50Speaker 2: voice? Um, I think to be honest, I think my,
- 9:53Speaker 2: my normal, normal things is just like taking care of
- 9:55Speaker 2: like my full body because it's all linked, isn't it?
- 9:58Speaker 2: So I think it's like regular exercise, sleep, making sure
- 10:00Speaker 2: I'm getting enough sleep is like a very, very important
- 10:03Speaker 2: thing and hydrating enough because never like never ever knock
- 10:08Speaker 2: the importance of hydrating the vocal folds because you can
- 10:10Speaker 2: feel it the moment that you're even missing a little bit,
- 10:13Speaker 2: um and then also like I avoid,
- 10:15Speaker 2: very specific foods at very specific times. Don't say spice. No,
- 10:19Speaker 2: not always, not always. I, I, yes, but not always,
- 10:22Speaker 2: so don't worry, don't worry. So, um, before a show,
- 10:26Speaker 2: I can't have dairy, um, about 1 to 2 hours
- 10:29Speaker 2: before because if not I just get like it doesn't
- 10:31Speaker 2: hurt me but phlegm, yeah, I'm sure, I'm sure that
- 10:34Speaker 2: you guys like face a similar thing as well. Um,
- 10:37Speaker 2: and then before sleeping, I can't have tomato and I
- 10:41Speaker 2: can't have.
- 10:41Speaker 2: Have spice
- 10:43Speaker 1: reflux,
- 10:43Speaker 2: yeah, it's acidic, yeah, yeah, yeah. So I think those
- 10:46Speaker 2: are the two main things, but to be honest, I
- 10:47Speaker 2: kind of eat everything. It's not, it's not very particular.
- 10:50Speaker 1: Look, the Asian genes in you will be able to
- 10:53Speaker 1: take the spice. That's for sure. It's just the reflux
- 10:56Speaker 1: at the end of the
- 10:56Speaker 1: day.
- 10:57Speaker 2: And then it's like worst case, I'll like sit upright
- 10:59Speaker 2: and sleep like that
- 11:01Speaker 1: so I don't get one of those pillows that
- 11:02Speaker 1: sits upright.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Oh no, just, just the back of my bed. I'll
- 11:05Speaker 2: just sit
- 11:06Speaker 1: on a wooden board, you
- 11:07Speaker 1: know.
- 11:09Speaker 1: I mean, look, you're at the prime of your life
- 11:10Speaker 1: right now, um, and in a few years you'll be 30, right?
- 11:14Speaker 1: In a few years. No, but that's a good thing
- 11:16Speaker 1: because I feel like when you reach, we are both
- 11:18Speaker 1: above 30, so let's just, that's a story for another day. Yeah,
- 11:20Speaker 1: it's OK. 10 years apart joking, not me.
- 11:27Speaker 1: Now that you are, you know, in the prime of
- 11:30Speaker 1: your life, you're, and I don't like to use the
- 11:32Speaker 1: word peaking because I think we peak at different times
- 11:34Speaker 1: of our life. What is your next goal, if any,
- 11:38Speaker 1: because now, you know, you feel like you're at the
- 11:40Speaker 1: top of the world now, you're achieving, you're achieving so much. What,
- 11:43Speaker 1: what's next do you reckon like that you want to achieve?
- 11:46Speaker 2: I
- 11:46Speaker 2: think that as like a personal goal.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Myself, I think that what I really want to do
- 11:52Speaker 2: is I spent so much of like my younger years,
- 11:55Speaker 2: especially even at the time when that like big video
- 11:57Speaker 2: came out, I think I just spent so much time
- 12:00Speaker 2: being self-conscious and being shy and like shying away from,
- 12:04Speaker 2: from like having my voice heard and like and like
- 12:07Speaker 2: really like speaking about about anything really, like I would
- 12:11Speaker 2: always shrink myself if I was in a room.
- 12:13Speaker 2: And so I think that at this point, I feel
- 12:15Speaker 2: like I finally finally built myself up in enough confidence, uh,
- 12:20Speaker 2: to really just want to showcase like what I have
- 12:22Speaker 2: to say and what my sound is at this current
- 12:25Speaker 2: point in my life and I think that like, you know,
- 12:27Speaker 2: I think maybe it might be mentioned later on but
- 12:29Speaker 2: like I am doing a concert at like at the.
- 12:32Speaker 2: The end of the year and I think that for me,
- 12:34Speaker 2: that's gonna be a really, really big turning point. It's
- 12:36Speaker 2: not going to be anything big. The house isn't massive
- 12:39Speaker 2: or anything like that. But for me, I think it's
- 12:41Speaker 2: really just an opportunity for me to like show people
- 12:46Speaker 2: my sound and to sing empty songs the way that
- 12:49Speaker 2: I want them to be sung and even showcase some.
- 12:51Speaker 2: Baby originals that may never, may never ever see the
- 12:54Speaker 2: light of day, and they will be the secret that
- 12:56Speaker 2: me and whoever is in the room with me will share.
- 12:59Speaker 1: Will there be special guests for your standalone concert? Or
- 13:02Speaker 1: are you gonna keep it very closely wrapped? Don't tell us.
- 13:06Speaker 1: Don't say anything.
- 13:07Speaker 2: Well, I've kicked my dad out.
- 13:09Speaker 1: Cause he did my last concert and it was stressful.
- 13:13Speaker 2: Uh, so I think this, I think this one is like, um,
- 13:16Speaker 2: it's me at the moment.
- 13:18Speaker 2: Yes,
- 13:18Speaker 1: that's all she's gonna say. OK. Can I, can I
- 13:21Speaker 1: ask one more question, last one. Yeah, here we go. So,
- 13:24Speaker 1: correct me if I'm wrong. Be more chill, Hamilton, Les Miserable,
- 13:28Speaker 1: and very soon Legally Blonde. Will, uh, Miss Saigon at
- 13:32Speaker 1: West End come calling for you anytime soon? Please say yes.
- 13:35Speaker 1: Come on, I would love to see you do a Kim.
- 13:36Speaker 2: Hey, I'm very old already.
- 13:39Speaker 2: They usually like 18 years old. Yeah, like fresh, fresh,
- 13:42Speaker 2: fresh faces, but
- 13:42Speaker 1: Asians cannot tell, you know, like, honestly, I know.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Casting directors. We could still get if we go overseas
- 13:47Speaker 1: and I do sometimes.
- 13:53Speaker 2: I, uh, I mean, to be honest, I feel like I'm,
- 13:56Speaker 2: I'm busy for like for the rest of this year anyway,
- 13:58Speaker 2: so I kind of can't get there anyway.
- 14:00Speaker 1: Is there a
- 14:01Speaker 1: dream role for you? Is there one that you you
- 14:04Speaker 1: must do before, you know, you call it a day
- 14:05Speaker 1: in a career?
- 14:06Speaker 2: Oh, I think there's, there's like, there's a few. So
- 14:08Speaker 2: I think I would love to play either like an
- 14:10Speaker 2: alpha or Galinda.
- 14:13Speaker 1: Actually
- 14:13Speaker 1: I can hear that, yeah.
- 14:14Speaker 1: I can hear it
- 14:15Speaker 2: already, but I don't know which one though, because I
- 14:17Speaker 2: think I'm too short for alphabet because they like casting
- 14:21Speaker 2: talk for some reason, um, but yeah, just visually, I
- 14:23Speaker 2: think they like that, that like appearance between like all
- 14:26Speaker 2: the dynamic between the two of them. But then I
- 14:28Speaker 2: also like, am I funny enough to play Galinda? I
- 14:31Speaker 2: don't
- 14:31Speaker 1: know.
- 14:34Speaker 1: It's.
- 14:37Speaker 1: One day at some point we'll just see you somewhere.
- 14:40Speaker 2: You can't be looking at us on stage because sometimes
- 14:42Speaker 2: people are like doing it behind their back. Oh really?
- 14:44Speaker 2: Like on stage like as an
- 14:46Speaker 1: inside joke, like an inside joke. Well, thank you so
- 14:50Speaker 1: much for being here. You're such a joy, so much
- 14:52Speaker 1: energy this morning despite.
