- 0:04SPEAKER1: The Oregon School District has long been known as a destination district for educators.
- 0:09In other words, it is a place where educators want to be.
- 0:13We continue to be grateful to our amazing community for supporting our collective effort of retaining and attracting the best possible educators for
- 0:23our students.
- 0:24Today, I am thrilled to talk with some of our educators who are new to the OSD this year.
- 0:31SPEAKER2: Welcome to this episode of Inside the OSD podcast, where it's all about the kids.
- 0:37Here is your host.
- 0:38Lifelong educator, and our superintendent, Dr.
- 0:41Leslie Bergstrom.
- 0:45SPEAKER1: Welcome to all of you.
- 0:46Just so our listeners know, you have all just wrapped up your first week with the OSD in the New Educator Orientation program.
- 0:54As a matter of fact, you're, like, four minutes off of wrap up, right?
- 0:58This just happened and so I'm excited to hear about it.
- 1:02But before we start, I'd love it if you'd please introduce yourself, your background and your new position for this school year.
- 1:11Whomever wants to start.
- 1:12Sure.
- 1:13SPEAKER3: I'm Ben Anderson.
- 1:15My history -- my undergraduate degree is in forestry.
- 1:19I worked in forestry and other natural resources industries for a while and then went back to school to get my teaching certification.
- 1:28I've been teaching for five years.
- 1:29I taught at Stoughton for the past five years and now teaching at Oregon.
- 1:34I'll be teaching biology, environmental science, and earth and space science.
- 1:39SPEAKER1: Welcome.
- 1:40SPEAKER4: I'm Jackie Shore and my teaching background is in English.
- 1:46I was a high school English teacher for nine years, most recently at Monona Grove High School.
- 1:50And then I took a little time off to stay home with my kids.
- 1:54And then a little pandemic hit, and I decided to try out library school, and I did my library practicum in the Verona School district.
- 2:04And now I'm really excited to be here.
- 2:05SPEAKER1: That's wonderful.
- 2:07SPEAKER3: Great. And my name is Evan Bonsall.
- 2:10I am originally from Marquette, Michigan, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
- 2:15I studied government and history at Harvard University, and I got my master's in education just in December from Northern Michigan University in my
- 2:24hometown. And I did my student teaching in Michigan, and I was a long term sub teaching social studies courses at McFarland High
- 2:34School this spring.
- 2:36But this is my first full year as a teacher, so super excited to join the team here in Oregon.
- 2:40SPEAKER1: That is very exciting.
- 2:41So all three of you, what brought you to the Oregon School District?
- 2:47Anybody who.
- 2:47SPEAKER4: Yeah, well, it was a pretty easy choice for me.
- 2:51I live just very nearby in Madison, and while I was in Monona Grove, I just heard over and over again how wonderful Oregon is.
- 3:01So here I am.
- 3:02SPEAKER1: Yay! Okay, that's really fantastic.
- 3:05SPEAKER3: I think as far as the educator's experience, I think Oregon is making and has made a lot of incredibly positive decisions
- 3:15and are are consistently supporting their educators so they can do their best job.
- 3:22And I think that in a time when resources are limited, Oregon's putting the resources they have in the right places.
- 3:31And that's important to me.
- 3:33And the community support is obvious even for someone who doesn't live in Oregon but has spent some time here.
- 3:40It's it's -- you see it everywhere.
- 3:43And I think that having that support makes our job much easier.
- 3:46SPEAKER1: I'm glad you feel that and notice that because community support is really, really important here.
- 3:51Our community is amazing.
- 3:54How about you, Evan?
- 3:55SPEAKER3: I would second that. I think it's really clear.
- 3:58I mean, just from doing a little bit of research and having some of those early conversations with folks here at Oregon, when I was -- I was looking for a
- 4:06permanent social studies teaching job, that there's really strong community support for the district, but also I think a very strong culture within the
- 4:14district of collaboration, reflection, innovation and and really trying to build a very strong, positive, supportive
- 4:24school culture at OHS and in the district more broadly.
- 4:27And definitely one of the things I've been learning as a new educator is culture and leadership is so important.
- 4:35And so I wanted to be part of a district that was really strong in both of those areas.
- 4:40SPEAKER1: You are so right.
- 4:42The culture and the leadership throughout all portions of the system from the classroom all the way through is really makes a big difference.
- 4:51And we have some fabulous school leaders and classroom leaders here.
- 4:56It's -- you're right.
- 4:57But you're already starting to talk about our values, right?
- 5:01The community and family partnerships, the idea of caring and professional educators.
- 5:07What about the values do you find particularly important?
- 5:13SPEAKER4: One thing that I believe is at the center of the apple, but I have only been here for four days, so I hope I'm not wrong, but the -- the teaching to the
- 5:23whole child.
- 5:24SPEAKER1: Thank you. That's at the center.
- 5:25You are right! All right.
- 5:27SPEAKER4: Okay. Um, I have I -- like I said, I taught high school English for nine years, and I loved getting to
- 5:36know my students then and getting towards the end of those nine years, I was getting better and better at getting to know them outside of the classroom.
- 5:45And now I have two kids of my own and thinking about them going to a school, I want their teachers to see who they are.
- 5:52And so I love that Oregon recognizes the importance of seeing the whole child and not just the English student in the seat.
- 6:03SPEAKER1: Thank you.
- 6:03SPEAKER3: Yeah. And I think to build on that, you know, I think the base of the apple is is equity, right?
- 6:10And and I thought that it was really great that the district -- one thing that impressed me this week as we were having this professional development for our
- 6:19new educators was that the district has the humility and the degree of like self-reflection to say, "Hey, we're a really good school district.
- 6:28We are serving most of our students very well, but there are students who we could serve better and who we could educate better." And I think that there are
- 6:38a lot of districts that don't have that level of self-reflection or don't value that, at least as explicitly and then actually follow through on it,
- 6:48right? It's -- I think equity is not just a buzzword in the district.
- 6:51And that that was something that I thought was really cool.
- 6:54SPEAKER1: I appreciate that you picked that up because I believe you had some students come and talk to you on the first day, right?
- 7:00And I think it is important to keep in mind how much better we need to be, right ?
- 7:05And we're always striving for that.
- 7:07Yeah. So that leads me to ask you to tell us a little bit about your experience this week.
- 7:13You had two full days and two half days in preparation for the new school year.
- 7:18So what have been some of the highlights?
- 7:22SPEAKER3: I think the fact that it exists period is incredibly helpful.
- 7:25So having this as a whole has allowed us to go step by step, or at least me to go step by step and organize the pieces.
- 7:31And now that I have many pieces organized, next week feels -- I feel much more comfortable to be able to really dig into what I need to do.
- 7:39SPEAKER1: Well, I'm glad I was hired on Friday to teach high school on Monday, so I had that sink or swim experience and I'm really glad that this
- 7:49week helped you feel more set up for success.
- 7:52It's hard not to have that.
- 7:55SPEAKER4: One thing that I appreciated about the week is it seems like the district is very thoughtful about the organization and so we got the whole district
- 8:04overview on Monday, and then on Tuesday we were at our individual schools and the -- I'm at the middle school.
- 8:13So the middle school echoed some of what the district had.
- 8:16I had already learned about the district.
- 8:17But then I was able to like learn how it's going to look where I'm actually going to be.
- 8:24So having the broad view and then the narrow view and then coming back with the other new educators for the next two half days, I thought the
- 8:33structure made me feel very comfortable and ready to start the school year.
- 8:38SPEAKER1: Glad to hear that.
- 8:40SPEAKER3: Yeah, I really enjoyed just getting to know some colleagues who are also new to the district.
- 8:44Getting to know my way around the school a little bit.
- 8:47It was convenient because it's taking place at the high school, which is where I'll be teaching.
- 8:52And I also thought it was today actually, we learned about the AVID program at the high school, and I was really inspired by
- 9:01that. Just, you know, I grew up in a working class family.
- 9:05My mom never went to college.
- 9:07She actually grew up in Fort Atkinson, not that far from here, but grew up pretty low income situation on a small farm.
- 9:15And her goal for my brother and me was that we would always get the educational opportunities and the ability to go to college.
- 9:23SPEAKER1: She she did a great job with that then.
- 9:24SPEAKER3: Well, I mean -- and so I just think it's really cool to see a school that even at the secondary level is already starting to
- 9:34think about how do we serve first generation college students or students who have faced other challenges and help make sure they're in a position to succeed.
- 9:43And the district is very intentional about that.
- 9:46I thought that was really cool and unique, really to this district.
- 9:50I haven't seen many other districts making similar efforts, even though it's so important.
- 9:54SPEAKER1: Well, you know, the fact that this took place at the high school for both you, Ben and Evan, that must have been really nice because then you get to be right
- 10:01in the building you're going to work in.
- 10:03And the high school has a very large crop of new teachers this year.
- 10:07I attended your building specific day on Tuesday for a portion of it, and altogether I think that circle of educators was close to 20
- 10:17people. Now, they weren't all new.
- 10:19Some of them were people who were there to support you, but it was a really big group.
- 10:23It'll be fun to have that sort of inaugural freshman class of educators all working together this year.
- 10:29Absolutely. Yeah, it'll be great.
- 10:31So what are you looking forward to?
- 10:33SPEAKER3: The kids coming in. I don't know.
- 10:35Like, I'm excited to teach again.
- 10:38I feel like, you know, summer is great, but I'm excited to teach.
- 10:43I feel -- I think I feel most in my element when I'm doing it and it is nice to have a break, but it's nice to get back into doing something that you enjoy and
- 10:53be fulfills you as much as teaching.
- 10:55Yes.
- 10:57SPEAKER4: I'm -- this will be my first time with my own library.
- 11:01And I did get to meet with the five other librarians in the district and I feel very supportive and supported and it's a
- 11:11little overwhelming to have your first job in your first time being responsible for something.
- 11:16And with that, I'm so excited to choose books, new books for kids.
- 11:23As a former high school English teacher, obviously I have a passion for reading and I'm just really excited to get to know the kids so that I can order books
- 11:31that they will love to read.
- 11:33I really hope.
- 11:34SPEAKER1: Oh, that's fantastic.
- 11:35That's a fun thing to look forward to.
- 11:37Book selection.
- 11:38SPEAKER3: Yeah, I think that I'm just really looking forward to, of course, meeting my students and also getting to work more with my colleagues in the social studies
- 11:46department here at OHS.
- 11:48It seems like it's a really top notch group of people.
- 11:52There are some really cool things going on.
- 11:54I mean, I'm mostly going to be teaching US history.
- 11:56So excited to be welcoming 100 plus freshmen into my classroom every day, but I'm just looking ahead at our schedule and
- 12:06super excited to start talking about the Spanish American War and all that stuff the first couple of weeks.
- 12:13But one of my favorite periods of history to teach.
- 12:16But also I'll be teaching a political science elective class.
- 12:19Oh, that'll be fun. Yeah.
- 12:21And that will be really kind of the first time bringing in a new curriculum, the legislative semester curriculum, which is like a simulation of essentially
- 12:30on day one, the students come in and they're sworn in as like senators and they learn about government because they have to to do their job, right?
- 12:38So it's a really authentic and unique way to teach civics.
- 12:42And so hopefully we can continue to scale that up in the coming years.
- 12:46SPEAKER1: Oh, I can't wait to visit that classroom.
- 12:49That sounds so much fun.
- 12:50All three of you are going to absolutely love our students.
- 12:54They are full of so much life and so much curiosity and they're just really great people that I think you will enjoy day in and day
- 13:03out. So any final thoughts?
- 13:07Anything, anything you wish you would have mentioned?
- 13:12Did we cover good ground?
- 13:13I think we did.
- 13:14SPEAKER4: I think we're all just.
- 13:15SPEAKER1: Really excited to start.
- 13:16SPEAKER3: Yeah, really excited to be here.
- 13:17Excited to go to the football games on Fridays.
- 13:20SPEAKER1: That's right. There's one this Friday night.
- 13:21SPEAKER3: I played soccer in high school.
- 13:23I heard that we've got a pretty decent soccer team.
- 13:26SPEAKER1: Pretty decent. That's a very humble way to say that.
- 13:30We have a really, really good soccer team, both our boys and our girls.
- 13:34So I think you will all really love being a part of this community.
- 13:38And thank you so much.
