- 0:09Speaker 1: Welcome to Monday here on Sports Radio AM 1300 The
- 0:12Speaker 1: Zone and on the iHeartRadio app.
- 0:15Speaker 2: I know, I know.
- 0:16Speaker 1: People are going, we mean welcome. Welcome on Monday. See
- 0:21Speaker 1: what happened over the weekend? Yes, I did.
- 0:22Speaker 3: Yes, I did.
- 0:23Speaker 1: The immortal words of Ernest T. Bass from the Andy
- 0:28Speaker 1: Griffith Show when he asked him about the heavyweight thunderstorm.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Big brainstorm we got last night. He goes, yeah, I
- 0:34Speaker 1: was out there in it. So, yeah. up there in
- 0:38Speaker 1: Dallas for that, but there was a lot more and
- 0:42Speaker 1: other things that happened during the course of the weekend.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Plenty of things to talk about, including the Texas OU
- 0:48Speaker 1: game and the moving on to getting ready for the
- 0:52Speaker 1: Florida Gators. We welcome you to the program here on
- 0:54Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
- 0:57Speaker 1: My name is Craig Wade. Thanks very much for joining us.
- 0:59Speaker 1: We're with you each and every weekday afternoon, Monday through
- 1:02Speaker 1: Friday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
- 1:03Speaker 4: The....
- 1:07Speaker 1: Producer of the program is Jay Kerman. You see him,
- 1:09Speaker 1: for those of you watching on YouTube, he's there as well.
- 1:13Speaker 1: And among the things that we'll get to, this, of course,
- 1:17Speaker 1: being a Longhorns Monday, and what that means on Monday
- 1:20Speaker 1: is we are over on campus in the late morning
- 1:26Speaker 1: and bring you the weekly press conference with Longhorns head
- 1:30Speaker 1: coach Steve Sarkeesian live from campus at 1130. We did
- 1:35Speaker 1: do that this morning. Additionally, what we then do is,
- 1:40Speaker 1: Jake is back here getting it all edited and everything,
- 1:43Speaker 1: and then during the course of the day-to-day, we will
- 1:47Speaker 1: bring you kind of the recast of the press conference,
- 1:53Speaker 1: setting up the sound bites. You'll still hear Sark's comments
- 1:55Speaker 1: to everything. We'll just set them up instead of just
- 1:58Speaker 1: running the whole press conference through, but you will hear
- 2:01Speaker 1: every comment that he made in that press conference. Also,
- 2:04Speaker 1: there is the NFL conference. Now, on Friday, when we
- 2:10Speaker 1: were in Dallas up at Bar W on Maple Avenue,
- 2:12Speaker 1: we did have the original first blush reaction to the
- 2:20Speaker 1: Cowboys' loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday night.
- 2:23Speaker 1: So there is that, and there's more to discuss with that. However,
- 2:27Speaker 1: there is a win for the Houston Texans to review.
- 2:31Speaker 1: They are in the win column for the first time
- 2:34Speaker 1: this year. They are a one and four now. So
- 2:37Speaker 1: there's that. There were some other interesting results that happened
- 2:40Speaker 1: in the NFL yesterday afternoon and last night. What an
- 2:45Speaker 1: absolutely bizarre ending to the game in Washington or Northwest
- 2:50Speaker 1: Stadium there. Is it actually in Landover, Maryland? Is that
- 2:58Speaker 1: where it is, Jay?
- 2:58Speaker 5: That's right.
- 2:59Speaker 1: Remember for a while when it first opened as FedEx Field,
- 3:02Speaker 1: they said it was in Raljohn, Maryland. Maryland, like Ralph
- 3:05Speaker 1: and John, whatever the people are. It was R-A-L-J-O-N. They
- 3:08Speaker 1: called it Ralph John, Maryland, which I thought was weird.
- 3:12Speaker 1: I thought it was in Landover, you know. And I
- 3:15Speaker 1: remember going out there and then you have to be
- 3:16Speaker 1: careful where you park the media thing. When Texas played Maryland,
- 3:20Speaker 1: they're having to cross double sets of railroad tracks where
- 3:24Speaker 1: the commuter trains went out there and all that sort
- 3:26Speaker 1: of stuff for the game. But what a bizarre ending
- 3:30Speaker 1: it was. to that game between Washington and the New
- 3:34Speaker 1: York Giants. We'll talk about that. Major League Baseball is
- 3:40Speaker 1: now into its final four. I'll look back at how
- 3:43Speaker 1: the Cleveland Guardians came all the way back to knock
- 3:46Speaker 1: off the Chicago White Sox, and now they stand poised
- 3:50Speaker 1: to take on the top seed in the American League,
- 3:52Speaker 1: the Tampa Bay Rays, starting tonight, game one. Game one
- 3:55Speaker 1: of the National League Championship Series was last night. It
- 3:57Speaker 1: was all as advertised, the pitcher's duel. between the Milwaukee
- 4:00Speaker 1: Brewers and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Brewers won it 2-1.
- 4:03Speaker 1: They lead one game to none. Game two of that
- 4:05Speaker 1: series begins this afternoon just past 4 o'clock. And in
- 4:09Speaker 1: our third hour, we'll keep folks updated on that. So,
- 4:13Speaker 1: a lot on the table today. We'll hear from Sark.
- 4:15Speaker 1: We're also going to hear from Arch Banning, too, because
- 4:16Speaker 1: many of you have had thoughts, questions, comments, wonderings about
- 4:21Speaker 1: not only Sark, but about Arch as well. And as always, win, lose,
- 4:27Speaker 1: whatever the situation might be, we do open up the
- 4:30Speaker 1: text line for you, for your thoughts, your questions, your comments.
- 4:34Speaker 1: All you have to do is text the word Texas,
- 4:36Speaker 1: followed by your question or comment to 81530. So you
- 4:40Speaker 1: text the word Texas, followed by your question or comment
- 4:42Speaker 1: to 81530. Standard messaging and data rates may apply. Where
- 4:46Speaker 1: do we begin? Jay Carman.
- 4:50Speaker 5: What a tough football weekend.
- 4:51Speaker 6: I mean, for fans of The Longhorns for fans of
- 4:55Speaker 6: the Cowboys and the Commanders.
- 4:57Speaker 5: Obviously, you mentioned the Texans got a win.
- 4:59Speaker 1: And the weekend's not over for me as a football
- 5:01Speaker 1: fan because my group is playing tonight. And I don't
- 5:03Speaker 1: know if they're going to beat the Buffalo Bills. So, yeah.
- 5:06Speaker 1: I told Linda, you know, sometimes I have these weekends
- 5:09Speaker 1: where the teams I'm fully invested in one way or
- 5:12Speaker 1: another all lose on a given weekend. It's like a
- 5:15Speaker 1: clean sweep. Football, baseball, whatever. So far, that's the case.
- 5:19Speaker 1: I don't really include North Texas in this case because
- 5:23Speaker 1: the alma mater was playing a winless Charlotte team. I
- 5:25Speaker 1: knew they were going to beat them and they hammered them.
- 5:27Speaker 1: So I don't really include them in that. But for me,
- 5:31Speaker 1: as having vested interest either as a broadcaster for Texas
- 5:34Speaker 1: or as a rooting interest for football or baseball, the Dodgers,
- 5:38Speaker 1: wanted the Cowboys to win Thursday night. You know, those
- 5:42Speaker 1: kinds of things. Yeah, so far it's gone over. weekend
- 5:48Speaker 1: so we'll we'll see we'll see what happens and it
- 5:51Speaker 1: was so for you because of that weird weird ending
- 5:54Speaker 1: to the Washington New York game it's.
- 5:56Speaker 6: Kind of those endings that make you want to just
- 5:59Speaker 6: absolutely unplug the tv unplug the season and and start
- 6:03Speaker 6: over I'm not sure how Dan Quinn comes back from
- 6:06Speaker 6: it we'll hear from him a little bit later on
- 6:08Speaker 6: when it when it comes to this it was just
- 6:11Speaker 6: just a complete head scratcher. And look, in college, Craig,
- 6:14Speaker 6: we saw the SEC kind of SEC this weekend. I mean,
- 6:18Speaker 6: there were ranked teams going down. LSU loses to Kentucky.
- 6:22Speaker 6: You got the controversy in Georgia, Alabama, which was such
- 6:25Speaker 6: a well-played game. It's a shame the officiating did have
- 6:28Speaker 6: such a big impact to help georgia out at the
- 6:31Speaker 6: end but but the bulldogs absolutely deserving of the win
- 6:33Speaker 6: the way they played on the road gunner stockton impressive
- 6:36Speaker 6: and it's just it's just one of those weekends that
- 6:39Speaker 6: that makes you realize nothing is taken for granted in
- 6:42Speaker 6: college football especially not on rivalry weekend and we all
- 6:45Speaker 6: got a reminder of that on saturday afternoon uh.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Yeah absolutely and and and by the way when when
- 6:51Speaker 1: jake says about the officiating factory in the sec agreed
- 6:55Speaker 1: with him don't know if you saw the statement about
- 6:57Speaker 1: what they did we'll get to that Let me jump
- 7:00Speaker 1: back to the NFL and start with the bizarre. We'll
- 7:03Speaker 1: take a break, and then when we come back from that,
- 7:05Speaker 1: we'll jump into the Longhorns and the press conference with
- 7:10Speaker 1: the comments from Steve Sarkisian. And what I'm talking about is,
- 7:14Speaker 1: in case you did not hear about what happened with
- 7:18Speaker 1: the Commanders-Giants game, the game was tied after Washington had
- 7:22Speaker 1: a 14-point lead. The Giants come back. Giants were driving...
- 7:26Speaker 1: for what looked to be a game-winning field goal try,
- 7:29Speaker 1: and Cam Scadaboo fumbled, and the commanders were covered. They
- 7:33Speaker 1: had no timeouts left, but they had time. They had
- 7:35Speaker 1: more than a minute to drive down the field. I
- 7:37Speaker 1: think a minute 55 when they got possession of it.
- 7:40Speaker 1: And they crossed midfield, and Jaden Daniels had a couple
- 7:44Speaker 1: of nice runs, a big run, then a screen pass
- 7:46Speaker 1: up the sideline. They got a first down. They got
- 7:49Speaker 1: out of bounds. But then they were starting... like what,
- 7:53Speaker 1: around the 30-yard line or 25-yard line with about 55
- 7:56Speaker 1: seconds left. And there was a handoff and a running
- 7:59Speaker 1: play that moved, I guess, inside the 25 down to
- 8:03Speaker 1: about the 23 because it was going to be about
- 8:05Speaker 1: a 40-yard field goal try. And the clock's just moving
- 8:08Speaker 1: and moving, and nobody's in a real big hurry, and
- 8:10Speaker 1: it's under 30 seconds. And if you're just watching and
- 8:13Speaker 1: you know football, you know it's no big deal that
- 8:17Speaker 1: it's running on that. All you have to do is
- 8:19Speaker 1: make sure to spike the football line or throw it
- 8:22Speaker 1: out of bounds or whatever, or get out of bounds, whatever.
- 8:24Speaker 1: But if you're in the middle of the field and
- 8:26Speaker 1: you're trying to set up a game-winning field goal try
- 8:28Speaker 1: like Oklahoma did, Mateer ran laterally and then touched down.
- 8:33Speaker 1: But the difference is Oklahoma had a timeout, and they
- 8:36Speaker 1: used the timeout to set up the game-winning field goal.
- 8:39Speaker 1: In the case of Washington, all they had to do was,
- 8:43Speaker 1: with the clock, running continuously inside of 20 seconds, all
- 8:47Speaker 1: they had to do was throw the ball out of bounds.
- 8:49Speaker 1: That's not what happened. This is the call on Commander's Radio,
- 8:54Speaker 1: Bram Weinstein, right? And London Fletcher, the former Washington and
- 8:59Speaker 1: Los Angeles Rams linebacker, I guess St. Louis Rams when
- 9:03Speaker 1: London was playing for them. But anyway, here's the call
- 9:06Speaker 1: and their utter amazement at how this game wound up.
- 9:12Speaker 7: If they're gonna run the ball here, they've gotta get down,
- 9:14Speaker 7: get set, and spike it. In motion, Ben Sitton, 15
- 9:17Speaker 7: on the clock. Daniels, play action, rolling to the left.
- 9:22Speaker 5: Goes down now at the 25 yard line.
- 9:24Speaker 7: There's only seven seconds on the clock.
- 9:27Speaker 5: There are no timeouts. This is gonna end up in
- 9:30Speaker 5: a tie if they don't spike it. It ends up
- 9:32Speaker 5: in a tie.
- 9:35Speaker 4: Wow.
- 9:35Speaker 8: You gotta be kidding me.
- 9:41Speaker 5: This is the end.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Of the game.
- 9:45Speaker 7: But Jaden has to throw this football away.
- 9:47Speaker 1: That's the only.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Oh, my goodness.
- 9:49Speaker 5: You better be kidding me.
- 9:53Speaker 2: You can't take a sack.
- 9:54Speaker 5: I mean, not a sack.
- 9:55Speaker 9: You can't get tackled in the middle of the field.
- 9:59Speaker 7: They call it pass play.
- 10:02Speaker 2: Yeah, that's not how you execute. That's brutal.
- 10:08Speaker 5: That's on us.
- 10:10Speaker 2: Pass on us.
- 10:11Speaker 7: The Giants gave them a break, gave them.
- 10:13Speaker 5: Life, fumbled the ball in.
- 10:15Speaker 7: A situation where all they needed to do was run
- 10:17Speaker 7: the clock out and pick a field goal. Washington gets
- 10:20Speaker 7: all the way down in the field goal position and
- 10:22Speaker 7: mismanages the final 30 seconds without a timeout. And they're
- 10:25Speaker 7: unable to spike it to get their field goal unit
- 10:29Speaker 7: on for a win.
- 10:30Speaker 2: And it ends up in a 27-27 tie. They call
- 10:32Speaker 2: a pass play.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Are you.
- 10:40Speaker 2: You got to communicate to Jaden. If he doesn't have
- 10:43Speaker 2: an opportunity to not have.
- 10:46Speaker 7: An open receiver right away, you got to throw that
- 10:48Speaker 7: football away.
- 10:51Speaker 2: You cannot. That's just a lack of communication, lack of
- 10:54Speaker 2: understanding of the situation.
- 10:57Speaker 5: And, Dan, I don't even know what to say.
- 11:01Speaker 1: I think you just said it, London Fletcher. Really and truly,
- 11:05Speaker 1: I think the only thing you really should do is
- 11:07Speaker 1: never mind about throwing the ball way away. When you're
- 11:10Speaker 1: getting under center with whatever it was, 18 seconds left
- 11:12Speaker 1: or 20 seconds left, take a step back, take a knee,
- 11:16Speaker 1: then get them back to the line of scrims with
- 11:18Speaker 1: about 10 seconds left, run it down to about five
- 11:21Speaker 1: and then spike it.
- 11:22Speaker 5: That's it.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Not that hard.
- 11:24Speaker 5: Organizational failure.
- 11:26Speaker 6: Those are the words that these guys were looking for
- 11:29Speaker 6: that as they're shocked in the moment, they're unable to say.
- 11:31Speaker 6: But it's organizational failure from the quarterback down to the OC,
- 11:35Speaker 6: up to the head quarterback, up to the OC, up
- 11:37Speaker 6: to the head coach.
- 11:38Speaker 1: Yeah, it was difficult. From the head coach, Dan Quinn
- 11:42Speaker 1: was asked about the clock management.
- 11:47Speaker 3: We pride ourselves on those moments at the end of
- 11:49Speaker 3: the game. And after the first down run, you know,
- 11:52Speaker 3: still trying to gain more for the kick.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Right calls, honestly, we can go clock it early.
- 11:58Speaker 5: Don't put ourselves in that spot, and that's my responsibility.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Nobody else's. All right, but does it really fall on
- 12:05Speaker 1: Jaden Daniels to execute clocking the ball?
- 12:08Speaker 3: The sequencing of that does not fall on him. It's
- 12:11Speaker 3: an outside throw or a clock. Those are the two,
- 12:14Speaker 3: an out-of-bounds throw or a clock. It has to come
- 12:18Speaker 3: from me. I don't even have to put him into
- 12:19Speaker 3: that spot. I can do that earlier, and we can
- 12:21Speaker 3: finish the kick earlier. We don't need to gain more yards,
- 12:24Speaker 3: so that's on me.
- 12:26Speaker 5: The only spike was the headset.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Yeah, and he did do that. He slammed that headset down.
- 12:32Speaker 1: That probably is not workable. It's probably not in working
- 12:36Speaker 1: function now after that. Okay. Anyway, so there is that.
- 12:42Speaker 6: Everybody in the NFC East played this week. Two teams
- 12:46Speaker 6: played one another. Nobody won the football game. Nobody got
- 12:49Speaker 6: a win in the NFC East.
- 12:51Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. And I saw several people saying, boy, that
- 12:54Speaker 1: says an awful lot about the NFC East that they
- 12:56Speaker 1: went winless through the weekend. Pretty amazing when you consider
- 13:00Speaker 1: two of the teams were playing one another.
- 13:01Speaker 5: And another one in Philadelphia. I don't know how early
- 13:05Speaker 5: you got up to watch the London game.
- 13:06Speaker 6: Well, you didn't have to wake up early to see
- 13:08Speaker 6: the Eagles lead with under 10 seconds to go and
- 13:10Speaker 6: blow it.
- 13:11Speaker 1: Kicked off, kickoff return all the way across midfield and
- 13:17Speaker 1: got down with about a second and a half left.
- 13:21Speaker 1: Set the stage game winning walk-off field goal for the Jaguars. So, yeah,
- 13:25Speaker 1: tough weekend for the NFC East as well. Okay, I
- 13:30Speaker 1: wanted to hear a little bit of D'Amico Ryan since
- 13:32Speaker 1: the Texans did get their first win of the season,
- 13:35Speaker 1: and it was on the road beating the Tennessee Titans.
- 13:38Speaker 1: So here's D'Amico starting off with his opening comments.
- 13:41Speaker 10: Our guys stayed the course.
- 13:42Speaker 11: It's been difficult the first couple weeks of the season,
- 13:44Speaker 11: but proud of the guys is how everyone kept believing,
- 13:47Speaker 11: kept the faith, and everybody kept pushing it today. It
- 13:50Speaker 11: was a great example of when we play complementary football,
- 13:53Speaker 11: all three phases working together, that's the type of team
- 13:56Speaker 11: that we can be.
- 13:57Speaker 1: He was asked what parts of the team played at
- 14:00Speaker 1: a higher level in the game.
- 14:01Speaker 11: It was just our execution. We executed really well. We
- 14:04Speaker 11: controlled the game. Offensively, they did an outstanding job of
- 14:07Speaker 11: driving the football down in the first half. We got
- 14:10Speaker 11: stalled out in the red zone a couple times by
- 14:12Speaker 11: self-inflicted penalties, but we were able to kick field goals,
- 14:15Speaker 11: put points on the board.
- 14:16Speaker 10: Amy did a really nice job there.
- 14:18Speaker 11: And then the second half is where we've struggled as
- 14:20Speaker 11: a team, felt like collecting when we came out in
- 14:23Speaker 11: the second half and we finished the game really well.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Okay, and then about C.J. Stroud? C.J.
- 14:28Speaker 11: Did an outstanding job with just, I mean, making play
- 14:31Speaker 11: after play when we needed it.
- 14:33Speaker 10: He was dealing.
- 14:34Speaker 11: He was throwing the ball at everyone who was open,
- 14:37Speaker 11: making really great decisions with the football. and able to
- 14:41Speaker 11: get him a rushing touchdown in there as well.
- 14:43Speaker 10: So he's been doing a.
- 14:45Speaker 11: Great job all year, so I'm thankful to be able
- 14:48Speaker 11: to celebrate him at this time. He's been leading our
- 14:51Speaker 11: offense really well, and he's very deserving of everything.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Texans with a win, and then they made a trade
- 14:56Speaker 1: to get Marvin Harrison Jr. away from the Arizona Cardinals.
- 15:00Speaker 1: We'll have more about that coming up. But up next...
- 15:03Speaker 1: We'll hear from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkeesian, from the
- 15:06Speaker 1: press conference this morning as part of Longhorn's Monday here
- 15:08Speaker 1: on Sports Radio AM 13 under the zone at the
- 15:10Speaker 1: iHeartRadio app. Let's hear from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkeesian,
- 15:16Speaker 1: where he was at the news conference and here was
- 15:22Speaker 1: his opening comments.
- 15:24Speaker 12: Obviously, a lot of the same sentiments from Saturday feel
- 15:27Speaker 12: kind of the same on a Monday and Glad I
- 15:30Speaker 12: got a chance to be with the team this morning. Obviously,
- 15:32Speaker 12: there's a level of disappointment, frustration coming out of the ballgame.
- 15:38Speaker 12: First and foremost, I want to thank our fans. I
- 15:40Speaker 12: thought our fans were tremendous Saturday going to Dallas, supporting us.
- 15:43Speaker 12: Appreciate all that they do. Great to get back to
- 15:47Speaker 12: DKR this weekend. The idea that the success we've had
- 15:52Speaker 12: at home with the 12-game winning streak, I think 23-1
- 15:55Speaker 12: in our last 24 games. The friendly confines of DKR
- 16:00Speaker 12: are important. As we touched on Saturday, our ability to
- 16:03Speaker 12: create turnovers is critical to our success. We've got a
- 16:07Speaker 12: 26 game winning streak or 26 game streak of creating
- 16:11Speaker 12: a turnover at DKR. So we got to continue that Saturday.
- 16:14Speaker 12: That's going to be important to what we do. But ultimately,
- 16:18Speaker 12: I think getting back to playing our brand, our style
- 16:20Speaker 12: of football and, uh, You know, a lot of times
- 16:23Speaker 12: adversity strikes and we can all feel bad about it.
- 16:26Speaker 12: And I view it as an opportunity for us to
- 16:28Speaker 12: really grow and get better. I think we can capitalize
- 16:31Speaker 12: on this adversity, make us stronger, make us better, and
- 16:35Speaker 12: reap the benefits of this adversity in November and into December.
- 16:39Speaker 5: So looking forward to that opportunity.
- 16:41Speaker 1: All right. Then to the questions. First of all, was
- 16:43Speaker 1: asked about quarterback development and consistency, given that Arch Manning
- 16:47Speaker 1: now has 21 starts under his belt.
- 16:49Speaker 12: Yeah, I mean, I think everybody's a little bit different.
- 16:51Speaker 12: Everybody's path, everybody's journey is different. The players around you
- 16:55Speaker 12: are different, so on and so forth. I think Arch, again,
- 16:58Speaker 12: is on a nice trajectory.
- 17:02Speaker 10: I hate it for him.
- 17:03Speaker 12: He has two interceptions in the fourth quarter of that
- 17:05Speaker 12: game when, quite frankly, I thought he played pretty.
- 17:07Speaker 5: Good up until that point.
- 17:08Speaker 12: And that's the frustrating part, but that's the level of
- 17:11Speaker 12: consistency that's needed. We know he can be really good
- 17:14Speaker 12: in critical moments. We saw that here against Ohio State.
- 17:17Speaker 12: We saw it in a fourth-quarter drive against Tennessee. So
- 17:20Speaker 12: just getting him back to that, playing with confidence and
- 17:23Speaker 12: trusting his ability and the guys around him.
- 17:25Speaker 1: Okay. Next, he was asked, you know, one thing that
- 17:29Speaker 1: he's talked about is trying to get takeaways. And in
- 17:33Speaker 1: the two SEC games, they haven't been able to do it.
- 17:35Speaker 1: So has he noticed some reasons looking at video for
- 17:40Speaker 1: the lack of takeaways?
- 17:41Speaker 5: Yeah, I think that's the hard part.
- 17:42Speaker 12: You know, we emphasize it, we preach it, we go
- 17:46Speaker 12: after it, we do multiple drills in practice. And so
- 17:49Speaker 12: I think, you know, the turnover margin is twofold, right? One,
- 17:52Speaker 12: our ability to take care of the ball. Two, our
- 17:54Speaker 12: ability to create those turnovers. And so we've been playing
- 17:57Speaker 12: really good defense, do not get me wrong, like fantastic defense.
- 18:01Speaker 12: How do we go to another level? We got to
- 18:02Speaker 12: get the ball off of people. And we are more
- 18:05Speaker 12: than capable of doing that. We got to continue to
- 18:07Speaker 12: emphasize it. I always say like, I talk about the
- 18:10Speaker 12: dam on offense getting ready to break. I think the
- 18:12Speaker 12: dam and creating turnovers defensively is getting ready to break.
- 18:15Speaker 12: But we've got to keep preaching it. We've got to
- 18:17Speaker 12: keep practicing it. We've got to keep going after it.
- 18:20Speaker 12: And I really believe that when we get one, we're
- 18:22Speaker 12: going to get two. When we get two, we're going
- 18:23Speaker 12: to get three.
- 18:24Speaker 4: Okay.
- 18:25Speaker 1: Next, he was asked about special teams. We're almost at
- 18:30Speaker 1: the numerical halfway mark of the season. So he was asked,
- 18:34Speaker 1: is he going to make any changes with his special
- 18:38Speaker 1: teams coaching here at midseason?
- 18:39Speaker 12: History is the best indicator of the future, and we've
- 18:42Speaker 12: been good on special teams for quite some time around here.
- 18:45Speaker 12: You know, I have a lot of faith in Coach
- 18:48Speaker 12: Banks and his schemes, and I have a lot of
- 18:50Speaker 12: faith in our players to get that done. Sometimes you
- 18:53Speaker 12: go through lulls like you do on offense or like
- 18:55Speaker 12: you do on defense, and I don't question our ability
- 18:59Speaker 12: to coach our way out of that, you know, compete
- 19:02Speaker 12: our way out of that to get back to the
- 19:04Speaker 12: standard of which we play special teams.
- 19:06Speaker 1: Okay, next, asked to assess His play calling, because that's
- 19:11Speaker 1: one thing I know fans love to point out and say,
- 19:15Speaker 1: there needs to be a play caller. There needs to
- 19:16Speaker 1: be an offensive coordinator to call the play, so on
- 19:18Speaker 1: and so forth. And Sarkis said he's going to continue
- 19:21Speaker 1: to call the plays. So he was asked, how would
- 19:24Speaker 1: he assess his part in the play calling right now?
- 19:29Speaker 12: I was just talking about that on special teams. I
- 19:31Speaker 12: think you can go through, um, Evan flows of, you know,
- 19:35Speaker 12: rhythm and scheme and tied it all together and the
- 19:39Speaker 12: personnel and all those things. And so clearly we've been
- 19:42Speaker 12: just a little bit off. I think we're close and
- 19:46Speaker 12: that's the encouraging part and I think we can get
- 19:48Speaker 12: there and so that's that's the challenge you know I
- 19:51Speaker 12: think you know like anything when you when you think
- 19:55Speaker 12: about a play caller you think about a great player
- 19:58Speaker 12: you think about a great offense we always think about
- 20:00Speaker 12: the best things that they've ever done And there's always
- 20:03Speaker 12: moments throughout a year where you maybe have lulls. And
- 20:06Speaker 12: our job is to work our way through that lull.
- 20:09Speaker 12: We're always going to get held to the standard of
- 20:10Speaker 12: what we can be. And that's our job to work
- 20:13Speaker 12: through this lull that we're in to be as explosive
- 20:16Speaker 12: of an offense that we can be.
- 20:18Speaker 2: Okay.
- 20:18Speaker 1: And then asked about, you know, Derek Cooper had a
- 20:20Speaker 1: couple of carries, only two in the second half after
- 20:23Speaker 1: some efficient carries in the first half. I was asked,
- 20:26Speaker 1: was that as much in the rhythm of the game
- 20:28Speaker 1: or was it something specific?
- 20:30Speaker 12: I think it was a game flow. It's hard when
- 20:32Speaker 12: you've got three backs and you're trying to rotate them
- 20:34Speaker 12: in there. It's a little bit of a different world
- 20:37Speaker 12: for me that way, where historically we've had kind of
- 20:39Speaker 12: one guy with a backup, and now we're trying to
- 20:42Speaker 12: incorporate three guys, and they're all very talented players to
- 20:46Speaker 12: their own right.
- 20:47Speaker 5: Derek is earning more opportunities.
- 20:49Speaker 12: Obviously, he was coming off of the injury, and so
- 20:52Speaker 12: the more he continues to do, the more opportunities he'll get.
- 20:55Speaker 1: Okay, and then one more this hour from Sark. asked
- 20:59Speaker 1: about the offense and his thoughts about why it hasn't
- 21:02Speaker 1: been clicking. Is it execution or scheme? The question that
- 21:05Speaker 1: gets asked quite a bit.
- 21:06Speaker 12: I think I always can do better. You know, I
- 21:08Speaker 12: always look at myself first. My job is to put
- 21:11Speaker 12: our players in the best position to be successful. And
- 21:14Speaker 12: if we're not hitting on all cylinders, if we're having
- 21:16Speaker 12: three and outs, if we're turning the ball over, clearly
- 21:19Speaker 12: I have to look at what we're doing and what
- 21:21Speaker 12: we're asking of them to do first. And then are
- 21:24Speaker 12: they executing what we're asking of them to do? And
- 21:27Speaker 12: are those things that we're asking them to do things
- 21:29Speaker 12: that they do well? And so I think it's a
- 21:31Speaker 12: combination of all that. But ultimately, that's my job. And
- 21:35Speaker 12: I take full responsibility of that.
- 21:37Speaker 4: Okay.
- 21:37Speaker 10: All right.
- 21:37Speaker 1: We'll hear more from Arch. I mean, well, we will
- 21:39Speaker 1: hear from Arch Manuel. We'll hear more from Sark coming
- 21:42Speaker 1: up next hour as well. Up next, Inconceivable here on
- 21:45Speaker 1: a Monday afternoon on Sports Radio AM 13 under the
- 21:47Speaker 1: zone and the iHeartRadio app. So the text line and
- 21:51Speaker 1: I had a couple of offerings here. One A person
- 21:54Speaker 1: said he was listening to Bob Shipley over the weekend.
- 21:56Speaker 1: He had a great quote in regards to the inept
- 22:00Speaker 1: offense and catastrophic special teams. He said, there has to
- 22:03Speaker 1: be a change or nothing will change. He stated the
- 22:05Speaker 1: SART needs to hire an offensive coordinator. Texas points per
- 22:09Speaker 1: game has steadily decreased over the past three years and
- 22:11Speaker 1: on pace to make it four years. If your radio
- 22:14Speaker 1: station's ratings decrease for four consecutive years, a doubt upper
- 22:17Speaker 1: management would bury their head in the sand and say
- 22:19Speaker 1: everything's fine here, nothing to see. That's apples and oranges
- 22:22Speaker 1: because they look at it completely different, it's not all
- 22:24Speaker 1: in one model in radio, it's different shows, different stations,
- 22:27Speaker 1: things like that, but I get your point on the deal,
- 22:33Speaker 1: and they had 382 yards of offense in the game,
- 22:36Speaker 1: so it wasn't like it was inept, but at the
- 22:38Speaker 1: times they needed to be effective, they could not do it,
- 22:42Speaker 1: and so in there, I agree with you, and Bob
- 22:45Speaker 1: Shipley knows an awful lot about things too, here's the thing,
- 22:48Speaker 1: and Sark was asked about it in the press conference,
- 22:51Speaker 1: You know, are you changing anything? Are you doing anything
- 22:54Speaker 1: with the... It doesn't seem like it makes much sense
- 22:58Speaker 1: you fire your special teams coach in the middle of
- 22:59Speaker 1: the season. You know, and as Sark pointed out, we
- 23:03Speaker 1: heard the soundbite from him earlier, they've had big special
- 23:06Speaker 1: teams moments last year, certainly. So it's not like Jeff
- 23:12Speaker 1: Banks forgot how to coach from last year to this year.
- 23:16Speaker 1: But they have to be better on special teams. There's
- 23:18Speaker 1: some things that can't... It can't be things like Getting
- 23:22Speaker 1: ready to punt, you have to spend time out. Or
- 23:25Speaker 1: field goal, you have to spend time out because you
- 23:26Speaker 1: don't have the right personnel in a certain situation. Totally
- 23:29Speaker 1: agree with that. You got to be organized on that deal.
- 23:35Speaker 1: Got to be able to block better against a punt
- 23:37Speaker 1: since you don't get a punt blocked. You know, last year,
- 23:42Speaker 1: Ryan Niblett had three gigantic punt returns. And he's had
- 23:48Speaker 1: a couple of decent ones, but has not had the
- 23:50Speaker 1: big breakaway one yet. So those are areas where they've
- 23:53Speaker 1: got to be better. Gianni Spedic had not missed a
- 23:55Speaker 1: field goal until he missed the 52-yarder there toward the
- 23:59Speaker 1: end of the ball game there. Certainly had the length.
- 24:02Speaker 1: It wasn't about the length. It was just being able
- 24:04Speaker 1: to get it on the mark, a little bit of
- 24:05Speaker 1: swirling wind up there.
- 24:07Speaker 6: Yeah, well, the game started with a kick out of
- 24:10Speaker 6: bounds too, just little things.
- 24:11Speaker 1: Yeah, little things. Got to be better in the little things,
- 24:14Speaker 1: no doubt about it. All right, second hour of the
- 24:17Speaker 1: program coming up right here on Sports Radio AM 1300
- 24:20Speaker 1: Zone and the iHeartRadio app. Ramirez to right field.
- 24:40Speaker 5: Pretty deep.
- 24:41Speaker 1: That ball is.
- 24:47Speaker 4: Gone!
- 24:48Speaker 5: He's done it again!
- 24:58Speaker 13: Jose Ramirez will not be denied! The 2-2 delivery.
- 25:04Speaker 10: Swing!
- 25:08Speaker 5: Update with a raise. The Cleveland Guardians.
- 25:15Speaker 14: Down to a nine count when they left here on Monday.
- 25:22Speaker 14: Pick themselves up off the canvas and win 3-0.
- 25:30Speaker 13: And move on to the American League Championship Series.
- 25:33Speaker 10: The 2-0 hit in the air.
- 25:35Speaker 13: Left center field.
- 25:36Speaker 5: Pretty well struck.
- 25:38Speaker 10: Pahez back near the wall.
- 25:38Speaker 5: And it's out of here.
- 25:43Speaker 13: Into the bullpen to left center field. Bryce Turang touches
- 25:47Speaker 13: them all. And the Brewers are on the board.
- 25:51Speaker 5: Who says they don't slug?
- 25:53Speaker 4: It's 1-1.
- 25:55Speaker 1: Here's Lara now. And the pitch. Swing and a ground ball.
- 25:59Speaker 5: Base hit up the middle.
- 26:01Speaker 13: Here comes Mitchell racing around third.
- 26:04Speaker 1: Mitchell is in to score.
- 26:05Speaker 13: Luis Lara, RBI single. And the Brewers have the lead
- 26:08Speaker 13: in the bottom of the fifth.
- 26:10Speaker 4: 2-1.
- 26:11Speaker 13: Small ball does the job.
- 26:14Speaker 9: Right, and who says 22 or under? Can't do the job,
- 26:19Speaker 9: so you see Pratt bunt the ball over, get the
- 26:22Speaker 9: runner in scoring position, and Lara delivers with the big hit,
- 26:26Speaker 9: and he didn't waste any time.
- 26:27Speaker 1: Betts waits the pitch.
- 26:29Speaker 13: Swing and a fly ball center field.
- 26:31Speaker 10: Playable Mitchell.
- 26:32Speaker 13: He goes back on an attack, but he makes the catch,
- 26:37Speaker 13: and the.
- 26:38Speaker 10: Brewers have captured game one.
- 26:40Speaker 13: McGill able to finish it off, and the Brewers hang
- 26:43Speaker 13: on for a one-run, game-one win. Milwaukee 2 and L.A. 1.
- 26:51Speaker 1: Major League Baseball down.
- 26:52Speaker 5: To its final four after a thrilling.
- 26:54Speaker 1: Win on Saturday night for the Cleveland Guardians. You heard
- 26:57Speaker 1: Tom Hamlin's call there, the Jose Ramirez home run. They
- 26:59Speaker 1: won 2-0 over the White Sox, overcoming a two-game-to-none deficit.
- 27:03Speaker 1: In fact, dropping the first two games at home in Cleveland.
- 27:06Speaker 1: Went to Chicago, won two games, then went back to
- 27:08Speaker 1: Cleveland and won... Game five, the White Sox completely just
- 27:14Speaker 1: disappeared offensively. They struck out 21 times on Saturday night,
- 27:20Speaker 1: managed three hits, being shut out 2-0. That advanced the
- 27:24Speaker 1: Guardians to the American League Championship Series against Cleveland. Welcome
- 27:27Speaker 1: you back. Hour number two of the program here on
- 27:29Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone. Craig Way alongside
- 27:32Speaker 1: the producer, Jay Kerman. And coming up here in a
- 27:35Speaker 1: few minutes, more on the Houston Texans. We're going to
- 27:38Speaker 1: hear from Arch Manning. We're going to hear more from
- 27:41Speaker 1: Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkeesian, some other college football notes.
- 27:44Speaker 1: We'll get to those and other NFL notes, but just
- 27:48Speaker 1: starting off the top of the hour with baseball. The
- 27:51Speaker 1: 21 strikeouts that the White Sox had were the most
- 27:56Speaker 1: in a nine-inning playoff game and the most in any
- 28:00Speaker 1: regular or postseason game since 1900. Minotaka Murakami and Andrew
- 28:06Speaker 1: Benatendi struck out four times each, and Then in addition
- 28:12Speaker 1: to that, Kyle Teal and Chase Mydraw struck out three
- 28:17Speaker 1: times each. So that was kind of tough. So Cleveland
- 28:21Speaker 1: moves on, and now the Guardians get the Tampa Bay Rays,
- 28:26Speaker 1: who had the best record in the American League. The
- 28:30Speaker 1: top two teams in the National League squared off last night.
- 28:33Speaker 1: Game one was last night. Game one for the American
- 28:36Speaker 1: League Championship Series is tonight at Tropicana Field.
- 28:40Speaker 10: And St.
- 28:40Speaker 1: Petersburg with Tampa Bay hosting Cleveland. Now, in the National League,
- 28:45Speaker 1: they began last night in Milwaukee. Pitchers duel, and the
- 28:50Speaker 1: Milwaukee Brewers got an absolutely stellar effort out of their
- 28:54Speaker 1: bullpen after Jacob Mizorowski was kind of hot and cold
- 28:58Speaker 1: a little bit and only was able to make it through,
- 29:01Speaker 1: I think, four and two-thirds innings. But the bullpen was stellar.
- 29:05Speaker 1: They limited the Dodgers to one run. That was in
- 29:07Speaker 1: the second inning.
- 29:08Speaker 4: L.A.
- 29:08Speaker 1: Left the bases loaded. after having them loaded with a
- 29:12Speaker 1: run in and only one out. Couldn't get anything after that.
- 29:15Speaker 1: Stranded more runners in scoring position in the entire postseason.
- 29:20Speaker 1: The Dodgers are two for 22 with runners in scoring position.
- 29:23Speaker 1: So that's something they've got to fix or their hopes
- 29:27Speaker 1: to three-peat will be gone. Huge game tonight, this afternoon.
- 29:31Speaker 1: It starts an hour from now in Milwaukee. Logan Henderson
- 29:36Speaker 1: will go for the Brewers and the Dodgers will turn
- 29:39Speaker 1: to their ace. They'll turn to Yoshinobu Yamamoto to try
- 29:43Speaker 1: to get it squared before it moves to Los Angeles
- 29:45Speaker 1: for games three and four. And if LA wins today
- 29:47Speaker 1: or any time during the next couple of games, then
- 29:49Speaker 1: there will be a game five there. And that would
- 29:52Speaker 1: be Wednesday, Thursday, Friday would be how those games would go.
- 29:57Speaker 2: So.
- 29:58Speaker 1: That would be during the rest of this week. So tonight,
- 30:03Speaker 1: this afternoon, is game two, Brewers-Dodgers. And then tonight is
- 30:08Speaker 1: game one, Rays and Guardians. Big, big efforts there. And
- 30:13Speaker 1: so we'll see what happens in the Cleveland-Tampa Bay Series
- 30:17Speaker 1: as they get it going tonight. There's one Monday night
- 30:18Speaker 1: football game tonight, Rams-Buffalo Bills. That's a pretty entertaining thing.
- 30:23Speaker 1: Cowboys licking their wounds coming off of Thursday night's really
- 30:27Speaker 1: flat performance tonight. in a loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
- 30:30Speaker 1: They play the Packers on Sunday night. The Packers looked
- 30:34Speaker 1: pretty sharp yesterday in putting down the Bears. There were
- 30:38Speaker 1: other big high drama games. The 49ers over the Seahawks
- 30:42Speaker 1: was certainly one of those. The Vikings are still undefeated.
- 30:45Speaker 1: They managed to outlast the Saints. We told you about
- 30:48Speaker 1: the bizarre innings in both the Philadelphia-Jacksonville and Washington-New York
- 30:53Speaker 1: Giants games. The Washington-Giants game wound up being a 27-all tie.
- 31:00Speaker 1: The Philadelphia-Jacksonville game was played in London and went down
- 31:04Speaker 1: to two scores. First time in NFL history. They said
- 31:09Speaker 1: since 1966, so there's been roughly 18,000 games played since
- 31:13Speaker 1: the merger, that two last possession scores happened in the
- 31:20Speaker 1: final eight seconds of a game. Wow. That's never happened before.
- 31:24Speaker 1: But it did happen yesterday outside of the United States.
- 31:27Speaker 6: Yeah, but it almost happened in Rio too, right? We
- 31:29Speaker 6: were just off from that. These international games have been crazy.
- 31:34Speaker 6: One more big storyline, Craig. Chargers are 0-5.
- 31:37Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. The Dolphins we expect to be on five.
- 31:42Speaker 1: Titans we expect to be on five. Not the Chargers.
- 31:47Speaker 6: No.
- 31:47Speaker 1: And they led a lot of that game against Denver.
- 31:49Speaker 1: They were up 17-7 in the half.
- 31:51Speaker 6: Denver keeps snatching victory from the jaws of defeat. They've
- 31:53Speaker 6: got a little bit of 2024 Vikings going on right now.
- 31:57Speaker 5: They have some issues that need to be sorted on offense.
- 31:59Speaker 1: Yeah. But they did get the win on that. On
- 32:04Speaker 1: the text line, somebody said, I had Fletcher's bag up
- 32:07Speaker 1: two corny dogs on my way out of the fair.
- 32:11Speaker 1: I refrigerated immediately. At noon, I used the patented Craigway
- 32:14Speaker 1: reheating method of using the air fryer. My wife and
- 32:18Speaker 1: two teenage kids said they tasted great. I wouldn't know.
- 32:21Speaker 1: Next year, I guess I'll buy three or four. Craig,
- 32:24Speaker 1: this is your impact. Yeah, I stumbled into that one.
- 32:27Speaker 1: I'm glad it worked out well. I didn't take any home.
- 32:29Speaker 1: The lines were so long and, quite frankly, wasn't really
- 32:32Speaker 1: in much of a mood to wait in a long line.
- 32:35Speaker 1: I had to get Will Matthews back to the hotel.
- 32:37Speaker 1: That was going to take a while. It took us
- 32:38Speaker 1: an hour just when we were pulling out of the
- 32:41Speaker 1: parking lot from there to get to the hotel, which
- 32:44Speaker 1: was 3.8 miles away. It took us an hour. to
- 32:46Speaker 1: get Will back there. So it was, yeah, it was
- 32:49Speaker 1: a long day's journey in tonight, obviously. Toward that end,
- 32:55Speaker 1: we'll get to Arch Manning here in just a couple
- 32:58Speaker 1: of minutes, but I want to hear more from D'Amico Ryans.
- 33:01Speaker 1: He was asked about how his defense responded to him
- 33:07Speaker 1: becoming the defensive play caller.
- 33:09Speaker 11: The defense did an outstanding job today. You know, Taking
- 33:12Speaker 11: the football away. Jake Hansen did a great job taking
- 33:15Speaker 11: the ball. Dom Robinson got one out. We were able
- 33:18Speaker 11: to recover the fumble. Our D-line, I mean, they got
- 33:22Speaker 11: after it when we needed them to. They put a
- 33:25Speaker 11: lot of pressure on the quarterbacks. Our players did an
- 33:27Speaker 11: outstanding job today.
- 33:28Speaker 1: One of those guys certainly was Will Anderson.
- 33:31Speaker 11: Will is, he is our guy. I like to see
- 33:34Speaker 11: what he's able to do every week. The guy is
- 33:37Speaker 11: a tenacious player, relentless every single snap. I mean, there's
- 33:42Speaker 11: no better competitor, no better person than Will Anderson. So
- 33:45Speaker 11: to see him go out and dominate the game by
- 33:47Speaker 11: getting three sacks, it's just an outstanding performance by him.
- 33:50Speaker 1: Okay, and then how is moving Anderson around in the
- 33:53Speaker 1: formation worked out being so effective?
- 33:56Speaker 11: The first thing with Will is he's a very smart
- 33:57Speaker 11: player who can pick up on a lot of different
- 34:00Speaker 11: things we're trying to do. We have to change the
- 34:01Speaker 11: picture for the offense line as best as we can.
- 34:03Speaker 11: You have a guy who can rush well in the
- 34:07Speaker 11: interior on guards, also over a center. but on the
- 34:10Speaker 11: edge as well, so we can put him anywhere. He's
- 34:13Speaker 11: always up for the challenge, and the D-line loves when
- 34:15Speaker 11: they can stand up and move around and make plays
- 34:17Speaker 11: on the inside. So he's doing a great job of
- 34:20Speaker 11: trying to eliminate him from getting chipped on the edge
- 34:22Speaker 11: so much. So he's doing a great job of executing
- 34:24Speaker 11: those things we have for him inside.
- 34:26Speaker 1: All right, we'll hear more from Domingo coming up next hour.
- 34:29Speaker 1: Arch Manning, first shot out of the box today over
- 34:34Speaker 1: on campus at the press conference. Does he beat himself
- 34:38Speaker 1: up after losses?
- 34:40Speaker 4: Obviously a little frustrated or a lot frustrated after the
- 34:43Speaker 4: loss like that. But, um, the good thing about, um,
- 34:47Speaker 4: being early on in the middle of the season, you
- 34:49Speaker 4: get another opportunity this week.
- 34:50Speaker 1: So moved on, um, flip the page and on to Florida.
- 34:54Speaker 6: All right.
- 34:54Speaker 1: Then he was asked about his thoughts on the fourth
- 34:56Speaker 1: and two thing where there was some consideration given before
- 34:59Speaker 1: they decided to try the field goal that Gianni Spedic
- 35:02Speaker 1: missed from 52 yards out.
- 35:03Speaker 4: There was a little conversation just about what we do
- 35:05Speaker 4: if we went for it, but, uh, Ultimately, that's not
- 35:08Speaker 4: up to me. If we were to go for it,
- 35:10Speaker 4: I'm going to do my best to get it, but
- 35:12Speaker 4: that's not up to me.
- 35:13Speaker 1: Does he remember when he first came in as a
- 35:16Speaker 1: true freshman and wasn't playing that year during that redshirt year,
- 35:21Speaker 1: the memories of how they turned it around after losing
- 35:26Speaker 1: the game to Oklahoma in 2023?
- 35:28Speaker 4: Just being able to move forward and flip the page
- 35:30Speaker 4: and learn from it and get better, that's all you
- 35:32Speaker 4: can do. Re-plan in your head and thinking about what
- 35:35Speaker 4: could have done this that and the other um you
- 35:38Speaker 4: just got to learn from it and move forward and
- 35:40Speaker 4: and put your best foot forward all right so in
- 35:43Speaker 4: turning the page how do you do that it's tough
- 35:45Speaker 4: um it was a long sunday but uh ultimately um
- 35:48Speaker 4: you're going to get faced with adversity in life and
- 35:51Speaker 4: in football um it's about how you bounce back all
- 35:53Speaker 4: right then he was asked to evaluate the things that
- 35:56Speaker 4: went well and the things that did not could have
- 35:57Speaker 4: been a lot better in a lot of places um
- 36:00Speaker 4: with my eyes and getting people the ball um and
- 36:03Speaker 4: not forcing things but uh Ultimately, you've just got to
- 36:06Speaker 4: play better, and we're going to get a win this week.
- 36:08Speaker 1: Okay. All right. He was asked, you know, on the
- 36:13Speaker 1: three strikes that he had for touchdowns, is he able
- 36:16Speaker 1: to hit the big plays and then others that he's
- 36:18Speaker 1: been searching for?
- 36:19Speaker 4: Yeah, I think any time he can hit big plays
- 36:20Speaker 4: and explosive plays, it feels good. All right.
- 36:23Speaker 1: And then that last interception, not the one that Peyton
- 36:26Speaker 1: Bowen picked off and took back for the pick six,
- 36:28Speaker 1: but the one toward the boundary there with 19 seconds left,
- 36:31Speaker 1: what was his view on what caused it? Yeah, they
- 36:34Speaker 1: brought a boundary sting.
- 36:35Speaker 4: I had to get it out. I got to put
- 36:36Speaker 4: it more outside for Cam or get an incompletion to
- 36:40Speaker 4: stop the clock and get another down because it's obviously
- 36:45Speaker 4: you can't do that in that situation.
- 36:46Speaker 10: All right.
- 36:47Speaker 1: He was asked also about the fact that he hasn't
- 36:56Speaker 1: run as much as a lot of folks think that
- 36:57Speaker 1: he should be running. Does he have green light to
- 36:59Speaker 1: just take off and run?
- 37:00Speaker 4: I have the green light to make the play. And
- 37:04Speaker 4: I think I need to do a better job about
- 37:05Speaker 4: making plays and stuff's not there and being smart with
- 37:08Speaker 4: the football.
- 37:09Speaker 1: There's a you got to do both. All right. A
- 37:12Speaker 1: lot of the undisciplined penalties happen on the defensive side
- 37:16Speaker 1: on Saturday, but some have on the offensive side as well.
- 37:20Speaker 1: So why are these things still happening?
- 37:22Speaker 5: There's no Arch Manning comment on the penalties. My apologies there.
- 37:25Speaker 5: That's a typo I gave you.
- 37:26Speaker 1: I got you. Okay, no worries. Do we have another
- 37:29Speaker 1: one here from Arch?
- 37:31Speaker 5: Here's the question. Here's what was supposed to be number
- 37:33Speaker 5: nine from Arch.
- 37:34Speaker 6: Did that second half against UTSA where he said he
- 37:36Speaker 6: fell in love with his legs a little bit, did
- 37:38Speaker 6: that impact the running?
- 37:39Speaker 1: No, I don't think so.
- 37:40Speaker 4: I just got to do a better job of picking
- 37:42Speaker 4: my spots and let my athleticism take over.
- 37:46Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, I thought I remembered him saying that. And
- 37:48Speaker 1: then one more from Arch. He was asked about the
- 37:51Speaker 1: rotation of the tight end and the running back, and
- 37:54Speaker 1: with them do that, does that change that comfort level
- 37:57Speaker 1: he has with the checkdowns when he's got to check
- 37:59Speaker 1: it down to a second or third target? No, not necessarily.
- 38:04Speaker 4: I thought I could have done a better job getting
- 38:05Speaker 4: some checkdowns in that game, keeping us on schedule, having
- 38:09Speaker 4: first and second down wins. But it doesn't really matter
- 38:13Speaker 4: who the guy is. Okay.
- 38:15Speaker 1: All right. We'll hear some more from Arch coming up
- 38:17Speaker 1: next hour. But up next, more from SART from the
- 38:19Speaker 1: Monday Presser here on a Longhorns Monday on Sports Radio
- 38:23Speaker 1: AM 13 under the zone of the iHeartRadio app. Well,
- 38:27Speaker 1: Longhorns are moving on to getting ready for the Florida
- 38:29Speaker 1: Gators this Saturday. A couple of notes from Bill Connolly
- 38:32Speaker 1: at ESPN with their SP Plus Index, all the stuff
- 38:38Speaker 1: they feed in the computer. Because we read the computer
- 38:40Speaker 1: things a lot. We even read computer projections on the
- 38:43Speaker 1: high school games. By the way, the computer this week
- 38:47Speaker 1: is picking Wimberley. And again, these are not betting lines
- 38:54Speaker 1: or wagering lines. It's what a computer projection is of
- 38:56Speaker 1: how many points better one team is than another. The
- 39:01Speaker 1: computer this week thinks Wimberley is 93 points better than
- 39:04Speaker 1: Austin Achieve. So those kinds of things happen.
- 39:09Speaker 5: Does the computer know about running clock?
- 39:12Speaker 1: Yeah, could happen.
- 39:13Speaker 5: Could happen.
- 39:14Speaker 1: Could happen on that. I think computer has like Pflugerville
- 39:18Speaker 1: as a three-point favorite against Bastrop.
- 39:21Speaker 5: Yeah, that.
- 39:22Speaker 1: That should be a good game Friday night.
- 39:23Speaker 5: It should be a very good game.
- 39:24Speaker 6: Bastrop's a tough one for the computers to pin down
- 39:27Speaker 6: because the results are wildly inconsistent based on the injuries.
- 39:30Speaker 1: Yeah, but they're getting healthier, right?
- 39:32Speaker 5: They're getting healthier.
- 39:33Speaker 6: They got Weston Nielsen back in the Crockett win on
- 39:36Speaker 6: Friday night. A 71-0 victory mirrors the route between the
- 39:41Speaker 6: two teams.
- 39:42Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, exactly. That's exactly right. So, yeah, we look
- 39:47Speaker 1: at computer projection things a lot. Um, here's one, uh, they,
- 39:53Speaker 1: what's listed as the, uh, SP plus index, uh, for, uh, ESPN.
- 40:01Speaker 1: There are four teams with a better than 90% chance
- 40:06Speaker 1: of reaching the college football playoff. Can you name the
- 40:08Speaker 1: four teams?
- 40:09Speaker 5: Team number one.
- 40:10Speaker 1: By the way, have you read this article?
- 40:11Speaker 5: No, I've not read this article.
- 40:12Speaker 1: Can you name the four teams?
- 40:14Speaker 5: Team number one, Notre Dame.
- 40:15Speaker 4: Okay.
- 40:16Speaker 5: Two, Ohio state.
- 40:18Speaker 4: No. Indiana.
- 40:20Speaker 1: They're in there. Okay.
- 40:21Speaker 10: Miami.
- 40:22Speaker 1: They're in there. Georgia. There they are.
- 40:25Speaker 4: Now, teams with between a 49% and 74% chance, or.
- 40:33Speaker 1: Eight of those. How many of those can you name?
- 40:34Speaker 5: Ohio State.
- 40:35Speaker 2: Yep.
- 40:35Speaker 14: Texas.
- 40:36Speaker 4: Yep.
- 40:36Speaker 5: Alabama.
- 40:39Speaker 4: Yes.
- 40:40Speaker 5: They're still over 40% there.
- 40:42Speaker 2: Yep.
- 40:42Speaker 1: BYU.
- 40:43Speaker 4: Yep.
- 40:43Speaker 5: Texas Tech.
- 40:44Speaker 4: Yep.
- 40:45Speaker 1: Okay.
- 40:46Speaker 5: SEC teams.
- 40:47Speaker 10: Ole Miss.
- 40:47Speaker 5: Yes.
- 40:48Speaker 1: No more SEC teams.
- 40:50Speaker 10: Oh, wow.
- 40:51Speaker 5: Okay, so we got to bounce over to the Big
- 40:53Speaker 5: Ten for this here?
- 40:54Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
- 40:56Speaker 1: That's one of them.
- 40:56Speaker 5: UCLA?
- 40:57Speaker 4: Yep.
- 40:58Speaker 1: Now, no more Big Ten teams. Okay.
- 41:02Speaker 5: Who are we missing out of the Big 12? Houston
- 41:07Speaker 5: in there?
- 41:07Speaker 4: Nope.
- 41:08Speaker 5: Oklahoma State?
- 41:09Speaker 13: Nope.
- 41:11Speaker 5: ACC? There's got to be no more ACC.
- 41:13Speaker 1: There's another Big 12 team in there.
- 41:17Speaker 5: Besides Texas Tech and BYU. And not Houston.
- 41:21Speaker 1: Wow.
- 41:22Speaker 5: Who am I missing here out of the Big 12?
- 41:24Speaker 1: Utah.
- 41:25Speaker 5: That's the one.
- 41:26Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 41:26Speaker 5: Because they haven't played anybody. And then they really don't
- 41:30Speaker 5: have a very hard schedule.
- 41:32Speaker 1: And then one more, a G6.
- 41:37Speaker 5: Oh, this is Boise State on this, isn't it?
- 41:39Speaker 10: Nope. Oh, they lost.
- 41:41Speaker 1: It's not Boise.
- 41:43Speaker 5: Who am I missing here? NDSU lost.
- 41:46Speaker 1: Not them. Go East. JMU. Yep. All right. So there's eight.
- 41:52Speaker 1: All right. There are 14. I'm not going to ask
- 41:53Speaker 1: you to name these. But there are 14 teams with
- 41:56Speaker 1: between a 13% chance and a 26% chance. And there
- 41:59Speaker 1: are 15 teams between 2% and 10%. Now, he goes
- 42:04Speaker 1: on and he talks about the Big 12 race could
- 42:08Speaker 1: still get really weird. The Big 12 title odds, according
- 42:13Speaker 1: to the SP Plus Index, who has the best odds?
- 42:15Speaker 1: To win the Big 12 title?
- 42:16Speaker 2: Yes.
- 42:17Speaker 1: Yes.
- 42:18Speaker 5: I'm going to, SP Plus probably likes BYU.
- 42:20Speaker 4: Nope.
- 42:21Speaker 5: Texas Tech.
- 42:22Speaker 1: Nope.
- 42:23Speaker 5: Really?
- 42:24Speaker 4: Utah?
- 42:25Speaker 1: Utah. About 30%. Yeah.
- 42:28Speaker 5: I mean, schedule's a big part of that.
- 42:30Speaker 1: BYU, 27%. Texas Tech, 26%. So it's pretty close. And
- 42:35Speaker 1: then four secondary contenders. Can you name any of these
- 42:37Speaker 1: four secondary contenders? You've been saying one of them.
- 42:42Speaker 5: Well, I named Oklahoma State.
- 42:44Speaker 1: They're one. You've been saying the other one, too. You
- 42:47Speaker 1: mentioned them two or three times.
- 42:49Speaker 5: Texas Tech?
- 42:50Speaker 1: No, they're already in there. Those are the ones I mentioned. Utah, BYU,
- 42:53Speaker 1: and Tech. There's four secondary contenders.
- 42:55Speaker 5: Houston.
- 42:55Speaker 3: Yep.
- 42:56Speaker 1: And then there's two more.
- 42:57Speaker 5: Arizona?
- 42:58Speaker 1: They're one.
- 43:00Speaker 5: And let's see. Who else is still.
- 43:02Speaker 1: Hanging around there? I'd be surprised if you get this one.
- 43:04Speaker 5: That could be Iowa State.
- 43:06Speaker 2: Nope.
- 43:07Speaker 5: Who, yeah. UCF?
- 43:09Speaker 1: Baylor.
- 43:09Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 43:10Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 43:11Speaker 2: Okay.
- 43:11Speaker 5: One loss, Baylor.
- 43:12Speaker 10: All right.
- 43:12Speaker 1: So here you go. You were talking. Here's some games.
- 43:16Speaker 1: That'll tell you some stuff. You were talking about Utah's schedule?
- 43:19Speaker 5: It's terrible.
- 43:20Speaker 1: Well, they host Houston in a couple of weeks.
- 43:22Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah.
- 43:24Speaker 1: Houston will host Oklahoma State this week.
- 43:26Speaker 5: That's a big one.
- 43:27Speaker 1: So in the next two weeks, the Cougars' odds were
- 43:31Speaker 1: hit hard by that narrow loss of Tech, but they
- 43:33Speaker 1: could play themselves right back into the race, especially if
- 43:36Speaker 1: they keep looking as good as they did at Kansas
- 43:38Speaker 1: State over the weekend. Oklahoma State, meanwhile, has a mulligan
- 43:42Speaker 1: to give. They'll host Tech in November. Good eye on that. Arizona,
- 43:48Speaker 1: which spent its mulligan in a loss to BYU, will
- 43:50Speaker 1: visit Texas Tech in three weeks. Then they will host
- 43:53Speaker 1: Utah two weeks later.
- 43:55Speaker 5: Utah's hardest road game right there, by the way.
- 43:58Speaker 1: Baylor is a projected favorite in its next four games
- 44:03Speaker 1: before a ruthless closing stretch at BYU, Tech at home,
- 44:07Speaker 1: and at Houston that will either make the Bears a
- 44:09Speaker 1: contender or help them determine who is.
- 44:12Speaker 6: Yeah, and the Bears probably have to win their way
- 44:15Speaker 6: in via the Big 12, and I only say that
- 44:17Speaker 6: because of the loss to Auburn.
- 44:19Speaker 1: Well, yeah, absolutely. Okay, let's go back to Longhorn's head coach,
- 44:23Speaker 1: Steve Sarkisian. Next, talked about, he was asked, you know,
- 44:30Speaker 1: sometimes I say it's a two-bar question. It's really two questions.
- 44:34Speaker 1: Sark was asked about Arch Manning and about his processings,
- 44:38Speaker 1: his process, and then if his name wasn't Manning, would
- 44:42Speaker 1: the expectations be less?
- 44:44Speaker 12: I think that he's processing fine. Again, I think playing
- 44:48Speaker 12: really good offensive football is all 11, playing 11 is one.
- 44:52Speaker 12: I think it's scheme. I think it's the momentum of
- 44:55Speaker 12: the game. I think if you took the name off
- 44:59Speaker 12: the back of his jersey. And you said, here's, you know,
- 45:02Speaker 12: Joe Smith playing quarterback at the university of Texas. And
- 45:06Speaker 12: here's a guy who's beaten four top 10 ranked teams
- 45:09Speaker 12: in his last 13 starts. Um, we'd be praising the guy,
- 45:13Speaker 12: but the expectations are high for him, but he understands
- 45:15Speaker 12: that the expectations are high for all of us. So
- 45:18Speaker 12: we gotta, we gotta put our nose back to the
- 45:19Speaker 12: grind and get back to work.
- 45:20Speaker 4: All right.
- 45:21Speaker 1: Back to that undisciplined penalty thing that we started, uh,
- 45:25Speaker 1: about in the last segment about, the reoccurrence of these things?
- 45:29Speaker 5: Gosh, it's frustrating.
- 45:31Speaker 12: I will say that. Some of them are unfortunate timing.
- 45:36Speaker 12: Some of them are guys trying a little too hard
- 45:38Speaker 12: to make a play. When we're jumping off sides at
- 45:41Speaker 12: defensive end, we're trying to get to the quarterback. You know,
- 45:46Speaker 12: Biles is trying to, you know, he sees.
- 45:49Speaker 5: A double pass. He's trying to go make a play.
- 45:50Speaker 12: He's not trying to hit the guy in the head
- 45:53Speaker 12: and that can happen that Cade Phillips, I thought, made
- 45:55Speaker 12: a heck of a play in the back of the
- 45:57Speaker 12: end zone. Unfortunately, they said he had his hand on
- 45:59Speaker 12: his shoulder.
- 46:00Speaker 5: So some of those are unfortunate. Some of them I
- 46:03Speaker 5: think you could deem undisciplined.
- 46:05Speaker 12: I didn't think we had undisciplined penalties on Saturday, maybe
- 46:09Speaker 12: like we had the week before at Tennessee.
- 46:11Speaker 5: So did we get better?
- 46:12Speaker 10: Yes. Was it good enough?
- 46:14Speaker 4: No.
- 46:14Speaker 5: Okay.
- 46:16Speaker 1: There's very important, impactful games every week for every team.
- 46:23Speaker 1: in the Southeastern Conference. That's just the way the league
- 46:26Speaker 1: is constructed, the way it works. For example, Ole Miss
- 46:31Speaker 1: is playing Missouri this week down in Oxford. It's a
- 46:34Speaker 1: huge game for both of those teams going into that.
- 46:37Speaker 4: And, of course, the Longhorns are trying to bounce back.
- 46:41Speaker 1: Florida's dropped two in a row. So now, because of
- 46:46Speaker 1: the depth of the SEC and teams knocking off one another,
- 46:49Speaker 1: we see what Kentucky has done to LSU, you.
- 46:51Speaker 6: Know, Bama's got to turn around and go to Rocky Top.
- 46:55Speaker 1: Yeah, right. So how much does all this depth in
- 46:59Speaker 1: the SEC increase his team's urgency to make sure they
- 47:04Speaker 1: handle their business to beat Florida on Saturday?
- 47:06Speaker 12: That's the key in the Southeastern Conference. This league requires
- 47:13Speaker 12: a lot of you. It requires the physicality that's needed.
- 47:17Speaker 12: It requires a relentless pursuit of effort to try to win.
- 47:21Speaker 12: It requires mental and physical toughness. It requires a line
- 47:25Speaker 12: of scrimmage on both sides of the ball to be
- 47:27Speaker 12: really good. It requires you to be at your best
- 47:30Speaker 12: when your best is needed in the fourth quarter of games.
- 47:33Speaker 12: The coaching's really good. The players are really good. The
- 47:36Speaker 12: environments you go into are tough. And so how do
- 47:40Speaker 12: you capture the focus of your team on a Monday,
- 47:44Speaker 12: carry that through throughout the week, and then come out
- 47:47Speaker 12: of the locker room on Saturday ready to go? That's
- 47:49Speaker 12: the challenge for all of us. And This week's no different.
- 47:51Speaker 12: This Florida team is very good. I mean, they beat
- 47:55Speaker 12: a top 10 ranked Ole Miss team by whatever it
- 47:57Speaker 12: was early in the year.
- 47:58Speaker 5: So we know what they're capable of.
- 48:00Speaker 12: Our job is to play to our standard and what
- 48:02Speaker 12: we're capable of so that regardless of how they play,
- 48:06Speaker 12: what they're getting from.
- 48:08Speaker 5: Us is the best of the Texas Longhorns. And that's
- 48:10Speaker 5: what we need to focus on.
- 48:11Speaker 1: Next, Sark was asked about John Summerall's Florida team and
- 48:14Speaker 1: what is different about this team than the one Billy
- 48:16Speaker 1: Napier was coaching.
- 48:17Speaker 12: Well, I think one of the things is, you know,
- 48:19Speaker 12: they're offensively, they're unique. They run the ball and they
- 48:24Speaker 12: believe in running the ball. It's a lot of unbalanced formations.
- 48:28Speaker 12: It's a lot of shifts. It's a lot of motions
- 48:30Speaker 12: and they're going to run the ball. Then they've got
- 48:32Speaker 12: all the plays off of those runs for the quarterback.
- 48:35Speaker 12: I think that's the first part. And then the second part,
- 48:39Speaker 12: I think it's the toughness on defense. You know, they're
- 48:43Speaker 12: growing schematically as they go. But I think those two
- 48:46Speaker 12: things are what stand out to me.
- 48:48Speaker 1: Okay. Then he was asked that question that Arch was
- 48:53Speaker 1: asked about, were there certain learning tools and elements that
- 48:59Speaker 1: came out of the last time they lost the Red
- 49:02Speaker 1: River rivalry, which was three years ago to Oklahoma?
- 49:05Speaker 12: Well, I think the thing we took out of 23
- 49:07Speaker 12: that we reminded the guys of and the staff of
- 49:11Speaker 12: this year was that 23 team took that loss down.
- 49:15Speaker 12: It was hard on them, just like this team has
- 49:17Speaker 12: taken this loss and it's hard on them. But what
- 49:20Speaker 12: did the 23 team do after that? They went and
- 49:22Speaker 12: won every game until the semifinals. And so it's not
- 49:26Speaker 12: the end of the season. And I, and I, and
- 49:27Speaker 12: I understand that we all want to win that game
- 49:30Speaker 12: and we don't want to win every game, but yet
- 49:32Speaker 12: there's more games to go. So how do we take
- 49:34Speaker 12: the adversity and how do we grow from it? I
- 49:36Speaker 12: said to the team, not all storms come to disrupt
- 49:40Speaker 12: our life. Some come to clear our path. And so
- 49:43Speaker 12: how do we use this adversity and what path did
- 49:45Speaker 12: it clear for us? How do we get better and
- 49:47Speaker 12: grow from it so that we can be a better
- 49:49Speaker 12: football team moving forward?
- 49:50Speaker 1: Okay. We'll hear some more from Sark coming up next hour.
- 49:54Speaker 1: We've got some other college football notes to get through
- 49:56Speaker 1: and to talk back. Again, if you want to reach us,
- 49:59Speaker 1: On the program, there's a couple of different ways you
- 50:01Speaker 1: can do it. You can text the program. You text
- 50:05Speaker 1: the word Texas, followed by your question or comment to 81530.
- 50:10Speaker 1: So you text the word Texas, followed by your question
- 50:14Speaker 1: or comment to 81530. Standard messaging and data rates may apply.
- 50:18Speaker 1: You can do that, or you can reach us via
- 50:21Speaker 1: the TalkBack feature at as well, the TalkBack microphone. In
- 50:25Speaker 1: order to do that, all you have to do is
- 50:27Speaker 1: download the iHeartRadio app. If you haven't already done so,
- 50:30Speaker 1: once you get it downloaded, then in your search bar,
- 50:33Speaker 1: just search AM 1300 The Zone. It'll pop straight up.
- 50:36Speaker 1: And then when it does, just then you'll see two buttons.
- 50:41Speaker 1: One is a white one, little triangular shaped button. That's
- 50:43Speaker 1: to listen to what's going over on the air. And
- 50:46Speaker 1: then there's a red one with a white microphone. That
- 50:48Speaker 1: is for the TalkBack. That's our TalkBack microphone. You press
- 50:51Speaker 1: that red button. That has the white microphone on it.
- 50:54Speaker 1: And you have 30 seconds to leave us a message.
- 50:57Speaker 1: We'll hear one of those coming up when we continue
- 50:59Speaker 1: on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone and the
- 51:01Speaker 1: iHeartRadio app. Before he had an outstanding solo career, the late,
- 51:07Speaker 1: great Jerry Rafferty was in a band called Steeler's Wheel.
- 51:10Speaker 1: And it was spelled... Not like the Pittsburgh Steelers with
- 51:15Speaker 1: two E's, but like if you were stealing some S-T-E-A-L-E-R.
- 51:20Speaker 1: Possibly the Steelers will. This was their big hit. It
- 51:23Speaker 1: was stuck in the middle with you. All right. As
- 51:29Speaker 1: we mentioned, you can reach us via the talkback line.
- 51:31Speaker 1: All you have to do is make sure you have
- 51:34Speaker 1: the free and easy to download iHeartRadio app on your smartphone,
- 51:40Speaker 1: be it an Android or an iPhone, whatever it might be.
- 51:43Speaker 1: on your smartphone, you download that app, you search AM
- 51:47Speaker 1: 13 under the zone, it'll pop up, and then there's
- 51:49Speaker 1: a red button with a white microphone. You tap that
- 51:51Speaker 1: button that activates the TalkBack microphone, and you can leave
- 51:55Speaker 1: us a message like this gentleman did. Hey, Craig, this
- 51:58Speaker 1: is Richard.
- 51:59Speaker 8: Would it be fair to say that Arch and the team,
- 52:03Speaker 8: especially the offensive line, has regressed? I know we've got
- 52:07Speaker 8: a lot of new people on the offensive line. Arch
- 52:10Speaker 8: looks like he's regressed. from the end of last year. Now,
- 52:15Speaker 8: maybe that's because he hasn't played, you know, as many
- 52:18Speaker 8: games as he did last year. But I seem to
- 52:23Speaker 8: think he.
- 52:24Speaker 1: Oh, we lost him. Remember, it's a 30-second limit there, Richard.
- 52:28Speaker 2: Sorry.
- 52:30Speaker 1: In certain portions of games, it looks that way. Certainly
- 52:35Speaker 1: in the fourth quarter with the two interceptions, it looks
- 52:36Speaker 1: that way. On the other hand, you look at the
- 52:39Speaker 1: rollout and the throw he made of the first touchdown
- 52:41Speaker 1: to Cam Coleman, the later throw to Cam Coleman, the
- 52:44Speaker 1: touchdown to Ryan Wingo, the one to Jermaine Bishop. He
- 52:48Speaker 1: looks really good. If you looked at the fourth quarter
- 52:50Speaker 1: of the Ohio State game where he's leading three fourth-quarter
- 52:54Speaker 1: touchdown drives, totaling 40 plays and 230 yards and taking
- 52:59Speaker 1: nearly 17 minutes of clock time, he doesn't look like
- 53:01Speaker 1: he's regressed there. But there are moments in games, certainly,
- 53:05Speaker 1: depending on the opponent, depending on the defense. And it's also,
- 53:08Speaker 1: I think, I'm going to be curious to see how
- 53:11Speaker 1: he does against a defense that isn't quite as stout
- 53:17Speaker 1: as what they've seen, especially Ohio State with Jim Knowles' defense.
- 53:23Speaker 1: When Jim Knowles was coaching at Oklahoma State and Ohio State,
- 53:28Speaker 1: before moving on from there to Tennessee, he was a
- 53:31Speaker 1: guy who could really give them fits defensively. And he
- 53:35Speaker 1: did so again. And Matt Patricia, of course, is the
- 53:38Speaker 1: defensive coordinator of Ohio State now. You know, those guys
- 53:43Speaker 1: and what Venables does with his defense is commendable. Still
- 53:47Speaker 1: in all, you hope your quarterback can execute against them.
- 53:50Speaker 1: They had 382 yards of offense. But, and this is
- 53:53Speaker 1: fair to point out, the difference last week that we
- 53:57Speaker 1: were talking about between Arch Manning and John Mateer. We
- 54:02Speaker 1: said the numbers were very similar. Mateer actually had a
- 54:05Speaker 1: couple of little bit better numbers in terms of the
- 54:08Speaker 1: total passing yardage and completion percent, like 66 to 64%.
- 54:13Speaker 1: But the difference was that phrase we used, and many
- 54:17Speaker 1: of you is not original, the catastrophic turnover, the fumbles
- 54:21Speaker 1: that were returned for a touchdown, the interceptions, those things,
- 54:25Speaker 1: that was the difference. Well, To Mateer's credit, he didn't
- 54:28Speaker 1: make those turnovers and arched in on those two interceptions.
- 54:32Speaker 1: The pick six return for a score by Peyton Bowen,
- 54:36Speaker 1: who was named one of the co-defensive players of the
- 54:37Speaker 1: week in the SEC. And then the interception along the
- 54:41Speaker 1: boundary late in the game that set up Oklahoma's game-winning
- 54:45Speaker 1: field goal. So it's important to keep that in mind.
- 54:49Speaker 1: That the difference in these games, I remember when I
- 54:53Speaker 1: was hosting Jimmy Johnson's show when he was coach of
- 54:55Speaker 1: the Cowboys, don't turn over the ball. If you're not
- 54:57Speaker 1: turning over the ball, chances are you're going to find
- 55:00Speaker 1: a way to win even if your offense isn't doing
- 55:01Speaker 1: that much. So there's that. One thing that came out
- 55:07Speaker 1: when we were talking about, you know, the updated rankings,
- 55:11Speaker 1: Texas number seven in the AP, number six in the
- 55:13Speaker 1: coaches' polls. The updated college football playoff projections are out.
- 55:17Speaker 1: The two dudes who do it for ESPN, Mark Schlebaugh
- 55:23Speaker 1: and Kyle Bonagura had theirs. And Bonagura has had Texas
- 55:30Speaker 1: not in the top four all along, even when they
- 55:32Speaker 1: were number one in the country. And he still has
- 55:34Speaker 1: them as number five playing the G6 representative, which he
- 55:41Speaker 1: believes to be Boise, Boise State. Now, remember, Boise has
- 55:46Speaker 1: a loss to Oregon, which is not aging that well,
- 55:49Speaker 1: by the way. You look at Oregon's recent losses.
- 55:53Speaker 6: Yeah, still a one-score game on the road, but you're
- 55:56Speaker 6: right about that.
- 55:59Speaker 1: And James Madison is continuing to raise eyebrows. What a job,
- 56:05Speaker 1: by the way, that's going on in Harrisonburg, Virginia. I
- 56:10Speaker 1: want you to think about something for a minute. In
- 56:12Speaker 1: the last five years, this being the fifth season, You
- 56:15Speaker 1: go back a couple of years ago, and you had
- 56:19Speaker 1: Kurt Cignetti coaching James Madison. He did a great job
- 56:23Speaker 1: with him. That got him the Indiana job, and with
- 56:25Speaker 1: two years, he built a national champion. His replacement, Bob Chesney,
- 56:30Speaker 1: did a great job with JMU, got him to the
- 56:32Speaker 1: playoff last year. So he leaves for UCLA, and UCLA
- 56:36Speaker 1: is undefeated right now despite losing Nico Iamaliava to injury.
- 56:41Speaker 1: They don't know how long he's going to be out.
- 56:42Speaker 6: Indefinitely, they say today. So that's why I said they
- 56:45Speaker 6: don't know. Yeah, that's a bad update. If you're a
- 56:49Speaker 6: UCLA fan, you were hoping to hear a timetable today.
- 56:51Speaker 6: Because their schedule sets up. really pretty well the rest
- 56:56Speaker 6: of the regular season the toughest game one could argue
- 56:59Speaker 6: on the remaining on the regular season schedule is the
- 57:02Speaker 6: last one the rivalry game with USC otherwise yeah Wisconsin's
- 57:06Speaker 6: playing well uh but it's a game they could probably
- 57:08Speaker 6: win we thought Minnesota was getting pretty good after beating
- 57:11Speaker 6: Michigan they got humbled by Purdue.
- 57:13Speaker 1: Over the weekend.
- 57:14Speaker 5: There's no we there. I wasn't buying Minnesota.
- 57:19Speaker 1: Well, a lot of people thought they were getting pretty good.
- 57:22Speaker 1: But not now.
- 57:24Speaker 4: And then after that, they've got winnable games. I mean, one,
- 57:31Speaker 4: they have to play Michigan.
- 57:32Speaker 1: But they're all winnable games to where UCLA doesn't play
- 57:35Speaker 1: Ohio State. They don't play Indiana. They've already beaten Oregon.
- 57:40Speaker 3: So.
- 57:41Speaker 1: You know, you would say they have a real shot
- 57:45Speaker 1: to do well. And perhaps, you know, if they're 11-0
- 57:55Speaker 1: going into the matchup with USC, they're probably going to
- 57:57Speaker 1: be in the playoff, whether they make the Big Ten
- 58:00Speaker 1: championship game or not. If they run the table all
- 58:05Speaker 1: the way through, they're going to be in the Big
- 58:07Speaker 1: Ten championship game. If they're 12-0 going into the Big
- 58:11Speaker 1: Ten championship game, they're going to be in the playoff
- 58:13Speaker 1: regardless of the outcome of that. So their star is
- 58:16Speaker 1: on the rise a little bit there. They're not in
- 58:21Speaker 1: there yet, according to those doing the playoff projecting. Bonagura
- 58:26Speaker 1: has Texas as the 5C playing the 12C Boise. But
- 58:29Speaker 1: my point was going to be that James Madison, Signetti
- 58:34Speaker 1: did a great job. He left. Chesney did a great job.
- 58:36Speaker 1: He left. Who's coaching him now? Billy Napier. The former
- 58:40Speaker 1: Florida coach got fired. He's got them unbeaten. They're playing well.
- 58:44Speaker 1: Who knows if they can get to the playoff or not,
- 58:46Speaker 1: but things are thriving in Harrisonburg, Virginia right now for JMU, which,
- 58:51Speaker 1: by the way, has announced it's leaving the Sun Belt.
- 58:53Speaker 1: They're going to join the American, which makes sense, really,
- 58:56Speaker 1: for them. But these two guys, Bonagura and Schleybaugh for ESPN,
- 59:02Speaker 1: have Boise State as the G6 representative. Bonagura has them
- 59:07Speaker 1: playing Texas. That would mean the Longhorns would host a
- 59:11Speaker 1: playoff game either the 18th or 19th of December, like
- 59:15Speaker 1: they did against Clemson a couple of years ago. They
- 59:17Speaker 1: would host Boise. Now, Slaybaugh has Texas as a 7th seed,
- 59:23Speaker 1: so he has them playing a home playoff game, but
- 59:27Speaker 1: as a 7th seed. Now, They've got Boise as the,
- 59:30Speaker 1: he has Boise as the 12th playing and Indiana the 5th. Clearly,
- 59:33Speaker 1: he's expecting Indiana to lose to Ohio State this week
- 59:37Speaker 1: in Bloomington. So, something to keep an eye on. Bonagura
- 59:41Speaker 1: has tacked the 11th seed at the 6th seed, Ohio State.
- 59:44Speaker 1: Schlebaugh has Utah the 11th seed at the 6th seed, Alabama.
- 59:49Speaker 1: Then comes UCLA. Bonagura has the 10-seed Bruins at the
- 59:53Speaker 1: 7-seed Crimson Tide, has them in Tuscaloosa. Schleyball has UCLA
- 59:59Speaker 1: coming to Austin as the 10-seed to play a 7-seed Texas.
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: And in the 8-9 matchups, Bonagura has 9-seed BYU at
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: 8-seed Utah. Schleyball has 9-seed Ole Miss at 8-seed BYU.
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: In other words, Kyle Bonagura has three Big 12 teams in.
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: That would be wild. He's got Tech, And, no, that's
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: not true. He's got two. He's got Tech and BYU. Schleyball.
- 1:00:26Speaker 5: Bonagura's got Utah in there, too.
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: Yeah, but Bonagura doesn't have Tech. He's got BYU. They
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: both have two. It's different off of that. Okay, now,
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: to the quarterfinals. Bonagura has Texas advancing over Boise to
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: play the four-seed Indiana. Schleyball has Alabama the six-seed advancing
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: to play the three-seed Notre Dame. Then you get to
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: the other quarterfinals. Bonagura has the six-seed Ohio State playing
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: the three-seed Miami. Schleybaugh has the five-seed Indiana against the
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: four-seed Ohio State. The seven-seed Alabama to play the two-seed
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: Notre Dame, according to Bonagura, and completing the quarterfinals. Schleybaugh
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: has the 10-seed UCLA beating Texas in Austin and then
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: going on in the quarterfinals to play the two-seed Miami.
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: And then finally, the last quarterfinals, The eight-seed Utah against
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: the one-seed Georgia, according to Kyle Bonaguer. Schleybaugh has the
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: eight-seed Ole Miss against the top-seed Georgia. Semifinals. Bonaguer has
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: the three-seed Miami against the two-seed Notre Dame. Schleybaugh has
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: the three-seed Notre Dame against the two-seed Miami. There's just
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: a difference of seeding. That would be in the Orange Bowl.
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: In the Sugar Bowl, four-seed Indiana against top-seed Georgia, according
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: to Bonaguer. Schleybaugh has four-seed Ohio State against top-seed Georgia.
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: And then the National Championships. Bonagura has the two-seed Notre
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: Dame against the one-seed Georgia. This is in Las Vegas.
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: And Schleybaugh has the two-seed Miami against the top-seed Georgia.
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: So there you are. Those are the playoff projections. They
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: both have Texas in. Bonagura has a five-seed. Schleybaugh has
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: a seven-seed. Bonagura has Texas advancing to the quarterfinal. Schleybaugh
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: does not. All right. We'll be back to wrap up
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: hour number two on 13 Under the Zone. Third and
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: final hour of the program here. on Sports Radio AM 1300,
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: The Zone, here on a Longhorns Monday. Glad to have
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: you with us, Craig Way, alongside the producer, Jay Kerman.
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: We will keep you updated on Game 2 of the NLCS, Brewers-Dodgers,
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: about to get started in Milwaukee, where the Brewers hold
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: a one-game-to-none lead there with Game 2 at American Family Field.
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: We're going to hear more from Longhorns head coach Steve
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: Sarkeesian from this morning's news conference. And the way they
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: do it also, by the way, case you're wondering. So
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: there's player sound and you'll hear that, um, you know,
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: both today and tomorrow. And, um, we've been hearing from
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: Arch Manning and you'll hear some more from Arch. Uh,
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: Jake will be here tomorrow. I will, uh, be out
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: tomorrow on, uh, some personal business and then, uh, and
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: then back on Wednesday. So Jake will have other player
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: sound what Justin Cryer I think also was speaking today
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: and Trevor Goosby I think was speaking today so he'll
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: have some other player sound coming up tomorrow and you
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: have some guests tomorrow don't.
- 1:03:19Speaker 6: You yeah we'll be talking to a few guests to
- 1:03:21Speaker 6: talk Longhorn football so yeah stay tuned for that we're
- 1:03:24Speaker 6: looking forward to having having some football.
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: Talk okay Wednesday I'll be back in on Wednesday our
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: usual Tuesday conversation with Greg Tepper the editor-in-chief of Dave
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: Campbell's Texas Football Magazine will be on Wednesday of this week.
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: So we'll have our conversation with Tab in the 2
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: o'clock hour. In the 3 o'clock hour, Sean Kelly, play-by-play
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: voice of the Florida Gators, will join us. So we'll
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: have that coming up in the 3 o'clock hour on Wednesday.
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: So we have those things to bring you. Before we
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: get back to football... This morning, and this is another
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: thing that Jake will have for you tomorrow. This morning,
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: Vic Schaefer, Texas women's head coach, had a media availability
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: where he talked about, you know, the team that's, they're
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: in preseason workouts now. It'll be one week from today,
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: they'll be in Storrs, Connecticut, and they will play the
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: UConn Huskies in an exhibition game. And then a week
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: from this Sunday, they will, have a home exhibition game,
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: sort of. It will be home. It just won't be
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: on the floor of Moody Center. There's an event scheduled
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: for Moody Center that day. So they're going to play
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: at the HEB Center in Cedar Park a week from
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: Sunday on the 25th. And they will be playing the
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: defending national champion, UCLA Bruins, the team that ended their
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: season last year in the Final Four. So they'll play
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: them tomorrow, I mean, a week from Sunday. And we
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: will broadcast that game for you here on 1300 The
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: Zone on that Sunday afternoon, Texas against UCLA from the
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: HEB Center in Cedar Park. So we'll bring that to
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: you on that. Meanwhile, both the men's and women's teams
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: were picked to finish second in the SEC preseason poll.
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: Texas picked to finish second by a panel of both
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: SEC and national media members. Junior Sinemata Spokatidis was named
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: to the five-person preseason all-SEC team. Junior forward, the transfer,
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: David Punch, who came in from TCU, was named to
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: the five-person preseason all-SEC third team. Florida, the SEC preseason favorite,
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: followed by Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Alabama in the top five.
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: Thomas Haldeman, of Florida was named the preseason SEC Player
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: of the Year. So, the preseason predicted order of finish. Florida, Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee, Alabama, Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Missouri,
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: Texas A & M, Auburn, Georgia, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, LSU,
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: Mississippi State, and South Carolina. Preseason Player of the Year,
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: Thomas Halk of Florida. First team All-SEC, Reuben Chinulu of Florida.
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: Duke Harris of Tennessee, Thomas Haug of Florida, Josh Hubbard
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: of Mississippi State, and Tyler Tanner of Vanderbilt. All second team,
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: Amari Allen of Alabama, Alex Condon of Florida, Bilon Momsilovic
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: of Kentucky. Yeah, he transferred from Iowa State. I remember
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: seeing him going on three years ago as a freshman.
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: Jordan Smith, junior of Arkansas, and Matas Vokantidis of Texas.
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: And the third team, P.J. Haggerty of Texas A & M,
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: Malachi Moreno, of Kentucky, Tahad Pettiford of Auburn, David Punch
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: of Texas, and Billy Richmond III of Arkansas. So Texas
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: picked to finish third in the SEC preseason poll, picked
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: to finish number two in that, and picked number two
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: in the women's poll as well behind South Carolina. And
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: South Carolina picked to win the SEC. And another announcement
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: coming from Texas women's basketball today, they've sold out their
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: season tickets. First time in program history. They ranked seventh
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: in NCAA Division I women's basketball attendance last year. They
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: averaged over 9,200 fans per game. 9,258 fans averaged per game.
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: And coming on the heels of back-to-back trips to the
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: Final Four, they're– picked second in the SEC poll. And
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: Madison Booker was on the preseason first team, all SEC.
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: And South Carolina's picked to win it. Texas second, LSU third,
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: Vanderbilt fourth, followed by Kentucky, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Mississippi State, Alabama,
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: Texas A & M, Florida, Georgia, Missouri, Auburn, and Arkansas.
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: Preseason player of the year, Michaela Blakes of Vanderbilt. All
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: SEC first team, Madison Booker of Texas, Michaela Blakes of Vanderbilt,
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: Joyce Edwards of South Carolina, Clara Strack of Kentucky, and, uh,
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: Michaela Williams of LSU. All SEC second team, Aaliyah Chavez
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: of Oklahoma, Tessa Johnson of South Carolina, Mylasia Fulwiley of LSU,
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: Chloe Kitts of South Carolina, and Talasia Cooper of Ole Miss. So, uh,
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: good things perhaps on the horizon for both Texas men's
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: and women's basketball. And tomorrow, um, Tomorrow, Jake will have
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: comments from Vic Schaefer, the Texas Women's Head Coach.
- 1:08:59Speaker 5: And finally, one other.
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: note here. Both the Texas men's and women's golf teams
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: are in St. Andrews, Scotland, playing in the St. Andrews
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: Lynx Collegiate. And both teams are leading after the first round.
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: Both of them are. Farrow, Keefe. by the way, pretty
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: seven holes on the way to a five under 67
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: and playing the back nine in four under par. So
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: she did really well.
- 1:09:26Speaker 4: The format of the tournament, six players to count five
- 1:09:29Speaker 4: scores during the 36 holes of stroke play. And so
- 1:09:34Speaker 4: the Texas women are in first place on that. And
- 1:09:37Speaker 4: the Longhorn men's golf team also finished second is leading
- 1:09:44Speaker 4: after the first round playing there at that event at St.
- 1:09:47Speaker 10: Andrews.
- 1:09:48Speaker 5: Man, how about Daniel Bennett today, Greg?
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: I mean, they've been really, really good, both men's and
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: women's golf team, and both leading at the round one.
- 1:09:59Speaker 5: Yeah. Eagle on 12 to get in the clubhouse six under.
- 1:10:03Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: So, yeah, both of them playing at St. Andrews, widely
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: hailed as being the birthplace of golf. So good for
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: both Texas men's and women's golf team as well. All right,
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: let's hear some more from the NFL side of things
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: and hear from D'Amico Ryans and hear as well from
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: the quarterback of the Houston Texans, C.J. Stroup. First of all,
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: from D'Amico Ryans coming off their first win of the year,
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: beating Tennessee yesterday. And He was asked how this win
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: might be able to help the team moving forward.
- 1:10:45Speaker 11: We're thankful right now to get our first win. It's
- 1:10:47Speaker 11: been a long time coming. Our guys, they poured in
- 1:10:50Speaker 11: the work, and they came out, and the work showed
- 1:10:53Speaker 11: itself again on game day.
- 1:10:54Speaker 10: So we just have to keep that formula.
- 1:10:56Speaker 11: Everybody just stay humble, keep working the way we're working,
- 1:10:59Speaker 11: and we'll be just fine.
- 1:11:00Speaker 5: Okay. All right.
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: That's one thing. he was talking about CJ Stroud and
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: the improvement of the offense.
- 1:11:10Speaker 11: Her offense has improved a lot, starting with Kaylee and
- 1:11:13Speaker 11: what he's done with the offense, being able to mix
- 1:11:16Speaker 11: it up a lot.
- 1:11:16Speaker 10: He's done a really good job of that. But also
- 1:11:20Speaker 10: go to CJ.
- 1:11:20Speaker 11: I mean, the way he's just more comfortable in what
- 1:11:23Speaker 11: we're doing year two now, you see his comfort level,
- 1:11:26Speaker 11: you see his confidence, you see his command, and it shows.
- 1:11:30Speaker 11: He's not afraid of any situation right he's making doing
- 1:11:34Speaker 11: a great job of communicating at the line of scrimmage
- 1:11:36Speaker 11: and we need to get to the right play he
- 1:11:38Speaker 11: can get us into the right play and everybody around
- 1:11:40Speaker 11: them is playing better.
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: Well as well all right uh next uh he discussed
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: the progress of the offensive line yeah.
- 1:11:47Speaker 11: O-line did a really nice job i know the stats
- 1:11:49Speaker 11: probably don't show up but i thought our run game
- 1:11:51Speaker 11: was really well today uh we got a couple big
- 1:11:54Speaker 11: runs called back but the o-line battle they did a
- 1:11:56Speaker 11: good job i gave we got i think only one
- 1:11:59Speaker 11: sack that we gave up there but Overall, those guys
- 1:12:02Speaker 11: have been battling.
- 1:12:03Speaker 10: They've done an outstanding job.
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: Okay, and then there was this weird moment because the
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: rumor mill had started to fly around that the Texans
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: were looking to make a deal that would involve Marvin
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: Harrison Jr., the Arizona Cardinal. So he was asked about it,
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: and he responded.
- 1:12:23Speaker 10: You guys want to know, huh?
- 1:12:25Speaker 13: Yes.
- 1:12:26Speaker 10: All right, we trade for Marvin Harrison.
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: See ya. That was a mic drop moment. Yeah, we
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: traded for Marvin Harrison. So they did.
- 1:12:35Speaker 11: I'm out.
- 1:12:35Speaker 5: Plane's leaving.
- 1:12:36Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:12:38Speaker 5: C.J.
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: Stroud was asked about a lot of things, including being
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: in a good rhythm.
- 1:12:42Speaker 9: I think I'm in a good rhythm right now. Distributing
- 1:12:44Speaker 9: the ball to who I need to get it to.
- 1:12:46Speaker 9: But I think our guys are running great routes. We're
- 1:12:49Speaker 9: handling the hots good. I think just me not only
- 1:12:52Speaker 9: being the one to recognize it, but our receivers. So
- 1:12:54Speaker 9: they were doing a great job with that. I thought
- 1:12:57Speaker 9: they did a good job of protection today. And, you know,
- 1:12:59Speaker 9: our tight end is doing the same thing, protection and,
- 1:13:01Speaker 9: you know, catching. And I thought our running backs did
- 1:13:03Speaker 9: the same thing. So I think that's something that we've
- 1:13:06Speaker 9: got to keep going because, you know, we might see
- 1:13:08Speaker 9: some pressure and some different looks. So I thought we
- 1:13:10Speaker 9: handled it decent today.
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: Okay, now with the cat out of the bag on
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: the Marvin Harrison Jr. deal, Stroud was asked about his
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: former Ohio State teammate, what he thought he might bring
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: to the team.
- 1:13:20Speaker 9: I think he brings a dynamic, you know, playmaker, somebody
- 1:13:24Speaker 9: who runs great routes, can catch really any ball. And
- 1:13:29Speaker 9: I'm just super excited to get with him. You know,
- 1:13:31Speaker 9: I loved him in college. You know, he's probably the
- 1:13:33Speaker 9: hardest worker I've ever been around in my life. And
- 1:13:35Speaker 9: then just, you know, who he is off the field.
- 1:13:37Speaker 9: He's a great dude, you know, quiet guy, but definitely,
- 1:13:40Speaker 9: you know, you feel his presence. So I'm excited to
- 1:13:42Speaker 9: get him in here and get him learning and, you know,
- 1:13:44Speaker 9: get him around the other guys, you know. And I think,
- 1:13:46Speaker 9: you know, it's perfect for him. You know, I think
- 1:13:47Speaker 9: fresh starts are good. So I'm excited to get him
- 1:13:49Speaker 9: with us.
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: So since he's a former teammate and since he is
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: the quarterback, C.J. was asked, was he consulted by the
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: team on this trade?
- 1:14:01Speaker 9: Yeah, I had some conversations with some different people, just,
- 1:14:04Speaker 9: you know, telling them who he is as a person,
- 1:14:06Speaker 9: as a player, what I liked about him when I played.
- 1:14:09Speaker 9: So I thought our front office did a great job,
- 1:14:11Speaker 9: you know, allowing me to be a part of it.
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, all right. And then was asked about offensive
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: play calling and how, oh, no, he was asked about
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: the expectations that he and everybody should have for Marvin
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: Harrison Jr.
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: Just being himself.
- 1:14:27Speaker 9: I'm not an expectation type of person when it comes
- 1:14:29Speaker 9: to others or even myself. I think I'm one thing
- 1:14:32Speaker 9: at a time. The next thing I'm focused on is
- 1:14:35Speaker 9: getting these things corrected from this game.
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: So same thing with him.
- 1:14:38Speaker 9: Whatever's next for him that's flying over here to Houston
- 1:14:41Speaker 9: and getting in the playbook, let's do that good. If
- 1:14:45Speaker 9: he's himself, he's going to be one of the best receivers.
- 1:14:47Speaker 9: I think he got drafted where he got drafted for
- 1:14:50Speaker 9: a reason.
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: And I think he'll be able to show that.
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: Okay, all right. And then he was asked about the
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: offensive play calling in the win.
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I thought he did a good job.
- 1:14:57Speaker 9: You know, I think, you know, there's other things where
- 1:14:59Speaker 9: we need, we can talk about, you know, some different situations,
- 1:15:01Speaker 9: but for the most part, I thought he did a
- 1:15:02Speaker 9: great job. You know, I think he's been calling, calling
- 1:15:04Speaker 9: it great, being more aggressive. Um, and I think, you know, he's,
- 1:15:07Speaker 9: you know, doing a great job communicating with me very highly.
- 1:15:09Speaker 9: So I love kills, man. He's a great dude, you know,
- 1:15:12Speaker 9: wants to, wants the best for everybody. you know, has
- 1:15:14Speaker 9: been showing in these last couple weeks.
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: Yeah, he's talking about Nick Caley, and he said, did Caley,
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: did he think he was able to block out the
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: noise over the difficulties the offense was having over the
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: past few weeks?
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I think, you know, that's life.
- 1:15:26Speaker 9: You know, you're going to have noise and have people,
- 1:15:28Speaker 9: you know, who think they can, everybody thinks they know
- 1:15:30Speaker 9: how to do our job. So it's your job to
- 1:15:32Speaker 9: block that out, and you're the one in the position,
- 1:15:35Speaker 9: so you got to be able to do your job
- 1:15:37Speaker 9: at a high level every.
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: Single day, and I think he's done that. I think
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: he's getting better.
- 1:15:40Speaker 9: I think he's learned the type of guys that this
- 1:15:43Speaker 9: system has, and You know, same thing with him.
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: He's got to adjust. You know, we've got Higg getting hurt.
- 1:15:47Speaker 9: You know, a couple of our offensive linemen, you know,
- 1:15:49Speaker 9: a couple of running backs like Demo, you know, having
- 1:15:51Speaker 9: a little thing today. So, you know, you've got to
- 1:15:54Speaker 9: be able to adjust. I think he's doing a better
- 1:15:55Speaker 9: job at that and really trusting me. I told him, like, man,
- 1:15:57Speaker 9: I got your back no matter what. Even if I
- 1:15:59Speaker 9: make a mistake, like, trust me with the ball again.
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: Let's keep going. So I think he's been able to
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: do that.
- 1:16:03Speaker 9: But, you know, I think just as a whole, we've been,
- 1:16:06Speaker 9: you know, as players, we've been trying to rally around him,
- 1:16:08Speaker 9: letting him know that whatever you call, bro, like, man,
- 1:16:11Speaker 9: no matter what they do, we're going to take care
- 1:16:13Speaker 9: of the ball. Even if we don't like, we got
- 1:16:14Speaker 9: to be aggressive and push the envelope and, you know,
- 1:16:16Speaker 9: scare money, don't make money. So I think, you know,
- 1:16:17Speaker 9: he's doing a better job at that.
- 1:16:19Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: Uh, there you go from the side of the Houston
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: Texans coming off their first win of the season, updating
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: national championship series as they did last night, the Dodgers
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: get on the board first, last night, they got to
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: run in the second inning. Uh, today it was leading
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: it right off Mookie Betts drew a walk he moved
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: to second on a Freddie Freeman ground out he moved
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: to third on a wild pitch and then Teoscar Hernandez
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: with a sacrifice fly to score Betts and so the
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: Dodgers have a one nothing lead with Milwaukee batting in
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: the bottom of the first.
- 1:16:50Speaker 6: And Craig a big impact early in the game for
- 1:16:52Speaker 6: ABS there was an overturn on a on a 2-2
- 1:16:55Speaker 6: pitch Mookie, instead of being punched out, gets back in
- 1:16:58Speaker 6: the box, 3-2. To the umpire's credit, 3-2 goes to
- 1:17:01Speaker 6: the same spot. He gets the call right. So that's
- 1:17:04Speaker 6: the impact of ABS. It's not just the rewarding for
- 1:17:07Speaker 6: the knowledge of the strike zone. It's helping the umpire
- 1:17:09Speaker 6: adjust early in a game, too.
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 1:17:11Speaker 10: All right.
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: Coming up, we're going to hear more from Longhorn's head coach,
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: Steve Sarkeesian, and from Orange Manning when we continue on
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: 13 Under the Zone. In the air, right center field.
- 1:17:21Speaker 13: Mitchell's over, still coming, makes the catch, bets, tags, and
- 1:17:24Speaker 13: heads home.
- 1:17:25Speaker 5: Mitchell's throw, not in time.
- 1:17:27Speaker 13: The Dodgers, one pitch later, take advantage of the wild
- 1:17:31Speaker 13: pitch and get the game's first run.
- 1:17:33Speaker 14: Back to the Craig Way Show. Connect with Craig through
- 1:17:36Speaker 14: the text line by texting ZONE to 81530, followed by
- 1:17:40Speaker 14: your message. Standard message and data rates may apply.
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: Well, that 1-0 Dodger lead as called by Joe Davis
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: on Fox didn't last very long. The Brewers that came back,
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: Yoshinobu Yamamoto pitching and got ahead with one out, got
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: ahead of both Bryce Terang and William Contreras with two strikes.
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: Terang then doubled down the left field line, and Contreras
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: with an excellent piece of hitting just stuck out the
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: bat and poked one in the left field for a
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: game-tying single. So the game is tied 1-1 with Milwaukee
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: batting in the bottom half of the first inning. All right,
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: let me go back to... The Longhorns will go back
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: to Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkeesian and asked about the
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: to evaluate the offensive chemistry. And is there a way
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: to get the two freshmen, Derek Cooper and Jermaine Bishop,
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: more touches?
- 1:18:29Speaker 12: Anytime you have the amount of three and outs that
- 1:18:33Speaker 12: we have right now, that is kind of like, you know,
- 1:18:36Speaker 12: when you look at your grandma's Christmas tree and there's
- 1:18:38Speaker 12: that blinking light.
- 1:18:39Speaker 5: That's the blinking light. Like, why is that happening?
- 1:18:42Speaker 6: Why?
- 1:18:43Speaker 5: We've got scheme. We've got players. We've got attitude.
- 1:18:46Speaker 12: We've got all the stuff that should make up to
- 1:18:48Speaker 12: where we shouldn't have the three and out. You're going
- 1:18:50Speaker 12: to have some, but not at the rate that we're
- 1:18:52Speaker 12: having them. So how do we find that rhythm?
- 1:18:55Speaker 10: How do we.
- 1:18:55Speaker 12: Execute a little better on third and medium, third and
- 1:18:57Speaker 12: short to extend drive so we're not having three and outs?
- 1:19:00Speaker 5: I get third and 10.
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: Those are hard.
- 1:19:02Speaker 5: So that's that part.
- 1:19:04Speaker 12: I don't know if it's chemistry, but I do think
- 1:19:06Speaker 12: there's some rhythm that we have to find from an
- 1:19:09Speaker 12: offensive perspective. For those two young players, the challenge is
- 1:19:13Speaker 12: who do you take out, right? Obviously, Jermaine is a
- 1:19:17Speaker 12: guy that we've tried to get involved, get featured, and
- 1:19:20Speaker 12: obviously showed up Saturday.
- 1:19:22Speaker 5: Derek, same thing.
- 1:19:23Speaker 12: So it's just finding the right balance, the right rhythm,
- 1:19:26Speaker 12: where we're not sacrificing the overall rhythm of the offense
- 1:19:29Speaker 12: just for one player, but yet put that player in
- 1:19:32Speaker 12: the game and try to get him involved because those
- 1:19:35Speaker 12: guys are both explosive players for us.
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: Yeah. Sark then asked about what he feels his offense
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: does well in terms of execution.
- 1:19:43Speaker 12: Well, I think at the end of the day, we
- 1:19:45Speaker 12: should be an explosive offensive football team. And I think
- 1:19:48Speaker 12: we found more explosive plays Saturday against a.
- 1:19:51Speaker 5: Really good defense.
- 1:19:51Speaker 12: You know, I think we had all the exact numbers,
- 1:19:55Speaker 12: but I think we had 382 yards Saturday. That was
- 1:20:00Speaker 12: 80 yards more than Georgia had against them. which was
- 1:20:04Speaker 12: more than yards and 80, but they only give up
- 1:20:05Speaker 12: 300 yards one other time before Georgia.
- 1:20:08Speaker 5: So we did some good things.
- 1:20:11Speaker 12: And what the crazy part is we're all sitting here
- 1:20:12Speaker 12: thinking we should add 500 yards against any elite defensive
- 1:20:16Speaker 12: football team. So the standard is very high here. I
- 1:20:20Speaker 12: think we should be good at it all. I think
- 1:20:21Speaker 12: we should be able to run it. We should be
- 1:20:22Speaker 12: able to throw it. We should be able to convert
- 1:20:24Speaker 12: third downs, be good in the red area, great explosive plays,
- 1:20:27Speaker 12: but that's where you hold everybody to, to try to
- 1:20:29Speaker 12: get that done.
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: Okay, next up was asked, is he seeing a pre-snap
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: adjustment from Arch when pressure comes on and there's switching
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: around and then the blitz is coming in?
- 1:20:42Speaker 5: Well, I think every play is different.
- 1:20:44Speaker 12: There's runs, there's passes, there's play-action pass, and so that's
- 1:20:47Speaker 12: a very vague question.
- 1:20:48Speaker 5: I think he does what he's asked of to do
- 1:20:51Speaker 5: on particular plays.
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: All right, how difficult is it? as Sarg says, to
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: turn the page and move forward.
- 1:20:58Speaker 12: You know, in a weird way, I'm a little sick
- 1:21:00Speaker 12: that way. I like a little adversity. I think it's
- 1:21:02Speaker 12: good for us. You know, I need a little, I
- 1:21:04Speaker 12: don't mind having this adversity. You know, I don't mind
- 1:21:08Speaker 12: having a little thorn in our side. I think it's
- 1:21:10Speaker 12: good for us. So we'll respond.
- 1:21:12Speaker 10: Yeah, all right.
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: And he's not saying it was a good thing that
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: they lost. He just knows that he wants to see
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: his team be able to respond to the adversity. He
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: went on to say that later. All right, what needs
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: to change for his special teams? Well, I think just
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: comes back to execution. It's like, you know, you got
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: to protect the right way. We got to cover the
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: right way.
- 1:21:28Speaker 12: We got to block returns the right way. And then
- 1:21:31Speaker 12: you find your moments to create those explosive plays. And
- 1:21:34Speaker 12: we've been a very explosive special teams unit. We have
- 1:21:37Speaker 12: a lot of faith in our specialists, our punter, our kicker,
- 1:21:41Speaker 12: those guys, you know, playing to their capabilities and then
- 1:21:44Speaker 12: trying to put our best players on those teams in
- 1:21:47Speaker 12: position to make their plays is of the utmost importance.
- 1:21:49Speaker 10: All right.
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: Sark next asks, how does he get a feel for
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: the running game as a play caller?
- 1:21:54Speaker 12: Yeah, you know, when I went back and watched the tape,
- 1:21:56Speaker 12: I actually thought we ran it pretty good Saturday. And
- 1:22:00Speaker 12: I probably should have said that better in the postgame
- 1:22:04Speaker 12: press conference. We had to kind of get away from
- 1:22:08Speaker 12: it in the fourth quarter because we had to go score,
- 1:22:10Speaker 12: and you felt like we needed to throw it to
- 1:22:12Speaker 12: get back down there. They're good, and they create negative plays.
- 1:22:18Speaker 12: And so what you're hoping for is that you can
- 1:22:20Speaker 12: find consistency there and then ultimately pop one. And I
- 1:22:24Speaker 12: think historically when we've ran the ball well against OU,
- 1:22:28Speaker 12: we've popped a couple runs that have created a 40, 50,
- 1:22:31Speaker 12: a 60-yarder, and then all of a sudden your number
- 1:22:33Speaker 12: goes from 125 yards rushing to 175 or 200. We
- 1:22:37Speaker 12: just didn't pop that big one Saturday. But I actually
- 1:22:40Speaker 12: thought from an efficiency standpoint, we were pretty good against
- 1:22:44Speaker 12: a defense that thrives on negative plays in the run game.
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: All right, so what is he looking for? in terms
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: of the brand, the style of football?
- 1:22:53Speaker 12: Well, I think it's fast, it's physical, it's tough, and
- 1:22:55Speaker 12: it's smart. And we have got to play that way.
- 1:22:58Speaker 12: We got to play fast. We've got really good athletes.
- 1:23:00Speaker 12: You get to play fast when you know what to
- 1:23:03Speaker 12: do and how to do it. We got to play physical.
- 1:23:06Speaker 12: This league requires physicality. We got to be mentally and
- 1:23:11Speaker 12: physically tough in this league. And then we got to
- 1:23:13Speaker 12: be smart. We got to be able to play situational
- 1:23:15Speaker 12: football at the highest level. And so if we can
- 1:23:18Speaker 12: do that, we'll always give ourselves a chance.
- 1:23:20Speaker 13: All right.
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: Next, he was asked about the distribution of what Arch
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: is doing through the air versus when he's forcing the
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: ball in, which obviously led to the two interceptions.
- 1:23:33Speaker 5: I think it's probably both.
- 1:23:34Speaker 12: I think there's times when you're like, hey, if we
- 1:23:36Speaker 12: can get this guy isolated and give him an opportunity
- 1:23:38Speaker 12: to make a play, we'll do that.
- 1:23:40Speaker 5: I think there's other times.
- 1:23:41Speaker 12: I mean, I don't get to call the defense and
- 1:23:43Speaker 12: the offense, so I can't say, hey, can you give
- 1:23:44Speaker 12: me cover three here or man-to-man? So you have to
- 1:23:48Speaker 12: react to what you get. We may be calling something
- 1:23:51Speaker 12: for Cam Coleman, and they're clouding him with safety in
- 1:23:53Speaker 12: a corner.
- 1:23:54Speaker 5: So you have to play the play.
- 1:23:56Speaker 12: And so that's that fine line in there of like
- 1:24:00Speaker 12: you're trying to force feed somebody, but yet you're also
- 1:24:02Speaker 12: trying to let the system work itself out, let the
- 1:24:04Speaker 12: quarterback put the ball where it's supposed to go.
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: All right, speaking of fine lines, He was asked to
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: describe the dichotomy, because what we're seeing is several three
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: and outs, and then there'll be a really masterful drive.
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: They went 75 yards and seven plays after Oklahoma had
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: taken its first lead of the ball game on the
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: pick six. They went 75 yards and seven plays, and
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: then he hits Jermaine Bishop for the game-tying touchdown pass.
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: So a the yin to the yang on that deal?
- 1:24:37Speaker 12: That's the question, right? Like we all want that rhythm.
- 1:24:40Speaker 12: We all want those drives that feel so good, so smooth.
- 1:24:43Speaker 12: And it's, you know, it's always good when it's first down,
- 1:24:46Speaker 12: second down, first down, second down, and there's not even
- 1:24:48Speaker 12: third downs involved.
- 1:24:49Speaker 5: And so how do we do that?
- 1:24:51Speaker 12: You know, and how do we be really efficient on
- 1:24:53Speaker 12: first and second down to either put ourselves in manageable
- 1:24:56Speaker 12: third downs or you don't even have third down. And
- 1:24:59Speaker 12: so That's the challenge. It's hard to say this one
- 1:25:04Speaker 12: thing is why. I think there's a variety of things.
- 1:25:07Speaker 12: But in the end, we know what we're capable of
- 1:25:10Speaker 12: because we're seeing these snapshots of what it looks like,
- 1:25:13Speaker 12: and that's what we're striving for all the time.
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: Where Cam Coleman has been concerned, it has been deep
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: shots or deep crossers. So he's asked about the potential
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: involvement for Coleman in a shorter passing game as well
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: as the deep shots.
- 1:25:28Speaker 12: Well, we're always trying to find that. And again, like
- 1:25:32Speaker 12: we're talking about Cam Coleman, we're talking about Jermaine Bishop,
- 1:25:34Speaker 12: we're talking about Derek Cooper. We neglected Ryan Wingo, Emmitt Mosley,
- 1:25:38Speaker 12: Raleigh Brown. People need to touch the ball. And the
- 1:25:41Speaker 12: more that our guys do consistently and the more hesitation
- 1:25:46Speaker 12: we can put on the defense of where the ball
- 1:25:48Speaker 12: is going to go and how it's going to get
- 1:25:49Speaker 12: to an individual, the better it is for us. But
- 1:25:51Speaker 12: we got to be efficient and we got to make
- 1:25:54Speaker 12: that happen and come to life. But yes, Cam is
- 1:25:56Speaker 12: a fantastic player.
- 1:25:57Speaker 5: I was really happy for him.
- 1:25:58Speaker 12: I thought he played a good game Saturday, but I honestly,
- 1:26:01Speaker 12: I think there's more out there for him. I think
- 1:26:02Speaker 12: he's just starting to hit his stride. And if you
- 1:26:05Speaker 12: think about the transfers that have come into our program
- 1:26:08Speaker 12: at the wide receiver spot, this is about the time
- 1:26:11Speaker 12: they start to really hit their stride.
- 1:26:13Speaker 5: So I'm excited for him.
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:26:15Speaker 10: All right.
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: So there are the things from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkeesian.
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: Our man CPAL said, you know, Craig, we fans are just,
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: So mad. How? And to who we lost to. See,
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: I think that obviously exacerbates things. When it is a
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: rivalry game and you lose that, that certainly comes into it.
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: He says, same problems, though, which is so frustrating. Texas
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: did everything OU had to have to win. Yeah, the
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: block punt, the pick six. They had the one offensive
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: touchdown in the game. Special teams, interceptions, penalties, late in
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: the second half.
- 1:26:54Speaker 2: Arrgh.
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: No doubt. You know, in addition to the block punt
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: to surrender a touchdown, and also the pick six, and then,
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: of course, the other interception sets up the game-winning field goal. So,
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: in addition to that, it's a situation of not allowing
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: a team to gain offensive confidence when they struggle to
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: do it offensively, Because of penalties. You think about it.
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: On the Oklahoma touchdown drive to tie the score, what
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: you had was a ball. You had a ball that
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: looked like it was going to be intercepted. And they
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: waved off the interception because of roughing the passer. Golf
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: was on an option pass. And I've had a lot
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: of people ask me about that. Say, well, once the
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: quarterback gives it up, is roughing the passer even still
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: in play? It is. If the quarterback is making a
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: backward pass, it's not called a lateral. You talk to
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: football officials, they'll tell you there's no such thing as
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: a lateral. It doesn't exist. And I kind of, you know,
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: will good naturedly disagree and say, oh, it's possible to
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: go straight down the line at a 45-degree angle. It's
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: possible to go straight. But chances are they're probably right.
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: It's probably not going to be exactly right. lateral movement.
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: It's going to be a backward pass, which makes it
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: a live ball. In any event, if you're throwing a
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: backward pass back there, the person who gets it then
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: sets up and is throwing a forward pass across the
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: line of scrimmage, doesn't matter if it's a wide receiver,
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: running back, whoever it is, whoever the first person is
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: and should be the only person to do it, to
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: throw a forward pass. If you hit him in the
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: wrong place or late, you'd be roughing the passer. So
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: that was a correct call. It was just unfortunate there
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: with Raheem Biles elevating there to try to block the pass,
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: and he hits him across the helmet. So it's roughing
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: the passer. He had two offside calls on that. And
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: then he had the pass interference call. And it's bang,
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: bang that they called on Kate Phillips. Maybe the hand
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: is on the shoulder back around there. Put it this way.
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: It was a lot more oblique than the pass interference
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: call that should have and was not called in the
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: Georgia-Alabama game. But no matter. Those four penalties kept the
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: drive going for Oklahoma where they ended up scoring the touchdown.
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: Lloyd Avant getting across for the score. So that made sense.
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: a huge difference. So there's the penalties on that drive,
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: the turnovers on that drive, and then, you know, a
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: missed field goal. All of that happening in the fourth quarter,
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: and that makes a difference in the ballgame. All right,
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: coming up, we're going to need for March Manning. Brewers
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: and Dodgers still tied 1-1. Los Angeles batting with two
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: outs in the top half of the second inning in
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: that one in Milwaukee. We'll continue here on Sports Radio AM,
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: 1300 The Zone on the iHeartRadio app. Back here on
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: a Monday afternoon.
- 1:29:59Speaker 4: Longhorns Monday on 1300 The Zone, updating you on Game
- 1:30:03Speaker 4: 2 National League Championship Series. They're going to the bottom
- 1:30:05Speaker 4: of the second inning in a 1-1 tie. Dodgers scored
- 1:30:09Speaker 4: a run in the top of the first. Brewers matched
- 1:30:11Speaker 4: it with a run in the bottom of the first.
- 1:30:13Speaker 10: L.A.
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: Had a runner draw a two-out walk, Andy Paez, but
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: Logan Henderson worked his way out of it with a
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: fly ball. out off the bat of Kyle Tucker. So
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: now they go to the bottom of the second inning.
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: One thing that is similar to what we're seeing last night, well,
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: certainly from the Brewers' perspective, less from the Dodgers until
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: it got later, is heavier pitch counts, rising pitch counts.
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: Logan Henderson near 40 pitches through two innings. And Yoshinobu
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: Yamamoto had an extended first inning. We'll see how it
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: goes in the second. But again, going to the bottom
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: of the second in a 1-1 tie. And the Brewers,
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: of course, lead that series one game to none tonight,
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: game one in St. Pete, Tampa Bay and Cleveland. One
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: thing is for certain. If the Brewers win the national
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: league championship series and they have home field advantage and
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: the Rays win the American league championship and they have
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: home field advantage, we are assured of having a first
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: time world champion. And, um, think it hasn't happened since
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: your ball club won, since the Washington Nationals won in 20.
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: I'm trying to think. No, Rangers.
- 1:31:31Speaker 4: Rangers.
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: Sometimes it just slips out of my mind that Texas
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: Rangers championship three years ago, the last team to win
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: a World Series other than the Dodgers was the Rangers.
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: And it was their first world title. And there's a
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: dwindling number, by the way, of teams that have never
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: won a World Series. But that's two of them right there,
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: the Brewers and the Rays. And they're both one seeds
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: going in. So we'll see how it goes. The Brewers,
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: of course, took game one last night from Los Angeles.
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: It's 1-1 in the bottom of the second right now
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: in game two in Milwaukee. And then the series will
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: shift to L.A. for game three, game four, if there's
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: necessary game five. And then if they're still playing, it
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: will go back to Milwaukee for an if necessary game
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: six and if necessary a game seven. for that. Same
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: story with Tampa Bay and Cleveland, but they're playing game
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: one tonight at Tropicana Field. First two games will be
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: at the Trop, and then it will shift to Cleveland
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: for game three, four, five, if necessary, and then back
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: to St. Pete for game six and seven, if that
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: happens there. And by the way, Cleveland, among non-expansion teams,
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: has had the longest drought between winning a world title.
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: Do you know the last time Cleveland, then known as
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: the Indians, won a World Series?
- 1:32:54Speaker 5: Oh, it was sometime in the 50s, wasn't it?
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: They got to the World Series in 54, won 111
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: games in 154. They won 111 in 43. They won
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: the American League pennant by eight games over the Yankees,
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: ending the Yankees' five-year run, five straight world titles, which
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: is still a record. Then they got swept by the
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: Giants in the World Series. Willie Mays with the amazing
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: catch and dead center of the polar grounds in game one.
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: The New York Giants baseball won that series.
- 1:33:21Speaker 2: They swept.
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: The last time Cleveland won a World Series was 1948
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: when they beat the then Boston Braves in six games.
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: Five years later, Boston moved to Milwaukee, came the Milwaukee Braves,
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: who won their first world title in 57, did not
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: win another one. Although the next year, they got back
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: to the World Series and led the Yankees three games
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: to one, led them off the hook. Yankees won that series.
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: And then the next year, tied the Dodgers for the
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: National League pennant. LA won a playoff two straight and
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: went on to beat the White Sox in the World Series.
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: And it was the Dodgers' first world title in Los Angeles.
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: But in terms of teams that have never won one.
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: You have to look at the expansion route. Milwaukee's ancestral
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: heritage is in Seattle. As the Seattle Pilots, who were
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: an expansion team in 1969, they played one season. There's
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: a great book by the former pitcher Jim Bouton, Ball Four.
- 1:34:20Speaker 5: I've read that.
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: Yeah, well, you remember that. What a wacky season that
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: was for Seattle. They finished in last place. Really, well
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: into July, they were like, you know, near the 500 mark,
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: and then they fell apart. And then the ownership fell apart.
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: And two weeks before the start of the season, the
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: team was going bankrupt, and a car dealer in Milwaukee
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: by the name of Bud Selig bought them, moved them
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: to Milwaukee. They pretty much kept the same colors that
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: they had in Seattle, but they changed the name to
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: the Milwaukee Brewers, and they took off from there. In fact,
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: the Brewers have only been in one World Series, 1982,
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: lost to the Cardinals in seven games. They've been close
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: many times. They've been the top seed. many times, but
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: they've only been to one world series and they've never
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: won a world series. So those two have never won one.
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: The Seattle Mariners have never won a world series. Um,
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: Colorado was never won a world. So they've been to one,
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: they lost to the Red Sox, got swept in 07.
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: And I think there's one other one. Who's the other one? Padres.
- 1:35:23Speaker 5: Yes.
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: How could I forget? Uh, the Padres who were an
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: expansion team in 69. So they're all expansion teams at
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: one point or another, you know, from, uh, 69 on,
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: they were expansion teams. But Cleveland has gone the longest
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: of the non-expansion group without a title. And they've gone
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: 78 years.
- 1:35:47Speaker 5: Yeah, famously taking that mantle from the Cubs.
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: That's right. Who broke the 108-year drought and the curse
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: of the Billy Goat when they did. All right, let's
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: hear from Arch Manning. And Arch, in talking about trying
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: to get his team... going better was asked about short
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: yardage plays and does he feel comfortable with some short
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: yardage plays they can rely on.
- 1:36:09Speaker 4: Yeah i think so for sure um those are the
- 1:36:12Speaker 4: plays that help you win games so gotta have those plays.
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: All right that makes a difference now um in addition
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: to that uh did he go over to um basically
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: uh console gianni spedic after he missed that long field
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: goal after he missed it i told him we're gonna
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: get the ball back and give him another chance ultimately
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: that didn't happen but uh I know he'll make the
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: next one and I have complete faith and have faith
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: in this team that we're going to bounce back.
- 1:36:38Speaker 4: Um, this adversity will be good for us and we'll
- 1:36:40Speaker 4: look back and be thankful for it.
- 1:36:42Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: Arch was asked, are there leadership voices on offense other
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: than his late in the game?
- 1:36:47Speaker 4: Hearing from Goosby, Connor, um, Wingo, just knowing that we're
- 1:36:52Speaker 4: built for it. Um, obviously didn't want that, that outcome,
- 1:36:55Speaker 4: me throwing a pick, but, uh, I'm not going to
- 1:36:57Speaker 4: shy away from that moment. I felt very comfortable in
- 1:36:59Speaker 4: the moment and, uh, When it arises again, we'll be
- 1:37:02Speaker 4: ready for it.
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: Okay, so there is adversity here. How does it impact him?
- 1:37:06Speaker 4: It's not fun when it's happening, but there's only one
- 1:37:09Speaker 4: way you can respond. You can let it linger and
- 1:37:12Speaker 4: let it affect the next week, or you can bounce back.
- 1:37:14Speaker 4: And so we've got one choice.
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: Yeah, last year, of course, the Longhorns did not play
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: well and Gainesville lost to Florida. So he was asked
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: about facing Florida one year after what happened a year ago.
- 1:37:24Speaker 4: I'm very excited. Obviously, it's a new coach. They've got
- 1:37:27Speaker 4: some new players, but they left a bad taste in
- 1:37:30Speaker 4: my mouth last year.
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: Arch was asked, is the pass protection better this year,
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: and in what way? It's way better.
- 1:37:35Speaker 4: They're doing a really good job. I haven't helped them
- 1:37:36Speaker 4: out a ton. I'm going to help them out more,
- 1:37:39Speaker 4: getting the ball out. I've been taking some unnecessary sacks,
- 1:37:41Speaker 4: so I'm going to help them out, and they're going
- 1:37:43Speaker 4: to continue to play better, and I'm excited for this week.
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: Derek Cooper, of course, had a couple of nice runs,
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: and he was asked where Cooper's starting to take the
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: big steps. Derek's making the most out of opportunities.
- 1:37:55Speaker 4: The carries he gets, he makes the most out of them,
- 1:37:57Speaker 4: so That's all you can ask for, especially when you're
- 1:38:00Speaker 4: a young player. You're only getting so many opportunities. Don't
- 1:38:03Speaker 4: count your plays. Make your plays count. I think he's
- 1:38:05Speaker 4: doing a good job of that.
- 1:38:06Speaker 10: All right.
- 1:38:06Speaker 4: And about that other freshman, Jermaine Bishop? Having Jermaine on
- 1:38:09Speaker 4: the field helps a lot. He's a really good player.
- 1:38:13Speaker 4: And I think we've got to execute on every personnel,
- 1:38:16Speaker 4: and that starts with me.
- 1:38:17Speaker 10: All right.
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: So then he was asked if he knew John Summerall.
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: from his time growing up in New Orleans when Summerall
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: was the coach at Tulane.
- 1:38:26Speaker 4: Summerall, of course, now the coach of Florida. I met
- 1:38:27Speaker 4: him at MPA, I think two summers ago. Really good coach.
- 1:38:31Speaker 4: Everyone in New Orleans loves him for what he does
- 1:38:32Speaker 4: at Tulane or did at Tulane. So we're excited for
- 1:38:35Speaker 4: the opportunity. I know it's going to be a really
- 1:38:37Speaker 4: good game.
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: Following a loss like this, who does he turn to
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: for some comfort and guidance?
- 1:38:41Speaker 4: My parents, my roommates, and the team. Kind of stick
- 1:38:45Speaker 4: to your close circle. after wins and losses, that's who I,
- 1:38:50Speaker 4: that's who I hang around. All right. Does he talk
- 1:38:51Speaker 4: with mentors after a defeat like this? Just talk to
- 1:38:54Speaker 4: my dad and, uh, talk to the coaches. Um, the
- 1:38:58Speaker 4: coaches are always honest with me and tell me what
- 1:38:59Speaker 4: I need to hear. Even sometimes when I don't want
- 1:39:01Speaker 4: to hear it. So just got to continue to get
- 1:39:03Speaker 4: better and, uh, and grow.
- 1:39:05Speaker 10: All right.
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: And, uh, how about, uh, a personal quarterback coach? Do
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: you have one of those growing up?
- 1:39:10Speaker 4: Yeah, but I always, you know, have my grandfather and dad,
- 1:39:13Speaker 4: those who I relied on the most.
- 1:39:15Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:39:15Speaker 4: And then finally, How does this loss against Oklahoma feel different?
- 1:39:19Speaker 4: All losses hurt, but it's about how you respond. You're
- 1:39:23Speaker 4: not going to win every game in life or in football.
- 1:39:27Speaker 4: I don't think anyone's ever won every game, but you
- 1:39:30Speaker 4: can respond well, and that's what we're going to do. Okay.
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: All right. We'll be back to wrap up today's edition
- 1:39:35Speaker 1: of the program on 13 Under the Zone.
